looking at you in the eye — or worse, facing you from the rear. Squirrels and raccoons used to be the No. 1 complaint among customers of Animal Control Specialists in Northbrook, but skunks have claimed the top spot in recent years, owner John Hagan told DailyNorthShore in 2016. There are many theories as to why the population is so large on the North Shore. One is simply that skunks are an indigenous member of the area’s forest ecosystem. Another is that the U.S. Naval base in Glenview, which had expansive open land, was once a skunk habitat, and the skunks spread across the North Shore when The Glen was developed. (Though that could just be urban legend,

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our local fire and police departments as well as our larger Lake Forest community; who supported Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, during the hospital’s July 12 closing due to the unprecedented flooding in Lake Forest. Thanks to your efforts working closely with our staff, we were able to safely discharge and transfer more than 90 patients to other facilities – ensuring our patients’ care would not be interrupted. Your time, efforts and expertise were invaluable during that enormous undertaking. I would also like to express my gratitude to our neighboring skilled nursing facilities and hospitals – in particular, our sister hospital, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, for responding so rapidly by making arrangements to admit and care for our patients. In addition, I am thankful to our neighboring hospitals who graciously served an increased number of patients while we restored our clinical operations. Rest assured that our new hospital sustained very minimal damage and remains on schedule to open in March 2018. ‘Star of the Show’ toddler aims to help others BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

sabel Madison suffers from Tubular Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on vital organs. The 2-and-a-half-year-old also has epilepsy, which causes seizures, and with the combined illnesses she doesn’t have the ability to sit up or walk, and she is nonverbal. Isabel, who is always happy and smiling, will be “The Star of the Show” at a September 15 event at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort hosted by Heal Team 6, an all-volunteer organization that assists local charities and causes with fundraising and event planning. The Heal Team 6 benefactor is the local charity Bcureful, which raises funds for research and trials to help treat infants with TSC. The trial is called PREVeNT, and it is led by Dr. Martina Bebin of the University of Alabama, Birmingham, said Julie Scroggins, founder and chair of Bcureful. She’s recruiting 80 infants that are diagnosed with TSC before
they have their first seizure, and she’s treating them with a drug called Vigabatrin. The trial began in September 2016. The participating centers include Stanford University, University of California at Los Angeles, University of Houston, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Minnesota Epilepsy Group and Boston Children’s Hospital. Scroggins said the hypothesis is that it will eliminate epilepsy in infants with TSC. Dr. Bebin received a $7 million grant from the National Institute of Health. “The trial is currently up and running, but the struggle is that it requires the infants and their parents to participate in approximately 13 visits over a three-year period, and that’s cost prohibitive for a lot of families,” she added. Scroggins explained that there’s a need for $208,000 to help fund travel and expenses for 40 families that are participating in this trial. It is estimated that one in 6,000 live births have TSC, Scroggins said. Additionally, it is estimated that more than 80 percent of

people with TSC also have epilepsy, and over 50 percent have autism. Isabel is not participating in the trial. Scroggins said had this trial been around a couple years ago she would have been eligible for it. “The exciting part about the trial is that if they can stop the
seizures from even happening, the outcome would be dramatically different,” said Scroggins. “That’s why it’s so important to make sure that the trial is successful, and we want to eliminate that barrier of financial burden for the families.” Scroggins’ passion for helping others with TSC began when her daughter, Mary Ann Scroggins, was diagnosed in 2009 at the age of 17. A CT scan picked up tumors in her brain after a car accident, and additional testing found tumors on her kidneys, on her skin, and in one of her eyes. Scroggins said the accident was a blessing in disguise, because her daughter didn’t have any symptoms, and this could’ve led to kidney failure years down the road. “My daughter and Isabel are really a stark contrast in what epilepsy does to TSC,” said Scroggins. “Mary Ann has her own set of concerns. The growths in her kidneys can change at any time and/or develop in other organs. Right now she’s doing well and views her mild involvement as an
opportunity to help others more severely impacted by TSC.” Currently, the 24-year-old college graduate is a corporate recruiter for a global pharmaceutical company. Scroggins explained that she’s grateful for all of the help that Heal Team 6 has provided. “With Heal Team 6 doing all of the heavy lifting, we’re able to seek grants and strengthen our organization, and we’re already having our most successful year,” said Scroggins. “See the tenacity of a mom?” said Lake Forest resident Steven Esposito, president of Heal Team 6. “Julie knew nothing about this and now she’s helping everyone, not just her daughter, and that’s why these small charities are so important. I would never take on a Mama Grizzly. Julie’s passion has changed lives.” Esposito, his wife, Melissa, and their children, Stephanie and Michael, created Heal Team 6 to support small charities that have the passion and determination to help others but lack the resources, organization, and network
necessary to make a meaningful impact. Esposito said Heal Team 6 will have a videographer at the September 15 Lincolnshire Marriott event, which will feature the song “Star of the Show” from Thomas Rhett. “It’s a very heartfelt song and we want to make a music video of Isabel,” he said. “Hopefully she’ll be at the event unless she has to have surgery.” The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, dinner and a live auction. The evening will be chock-full of entertainment, with everything from a Jersey Boys tribute band to a live auction, a paddle raise and casino games. “The best part is that 100 percent of the money raised will go to the charity,” he said. Rob Carmichael, curator of Lake Forest’s Wildlife Discovery Center, offered two additional theories about the North Shore’s skunk population. He said skunks have redistributed to be closer to human habitation because our wet, buggy summers have provided more food for them. He also pointed out that Great Horned Owls are the skunks’ biggest predator. “Stop using rodenticides and you will see more owls and
fewer skunks,” he said. “Rodenticides are causing great horned owls to die at alarming rates.” As skunks have settled into area yards, parks, and the crannies of homes, they are especially troublesome for pets, often leaving a sickening odor on dogs and cats with an oily spray that penetrates their fur and skin. From home remedies to grooming techniques, owners of skunk-sprayed dogs have tried different approaches to rid their pets of the awful scent. DailyNorthShore investigated what is out there and what really does the trick in getting the odor off freshly sprayed dogs. These may work for cats too — but we primarily asked about dogs. First, we turned to our local animal hospitals to see what they recommend. While veterinarians do not typically provide treatment for dogs that are sprayed by skunks, they do offer recommendations. Representatives of Winnetka Animal Hospital and Green Bay Animal Hospital suggested going to a groomer as soon as possible or turning to the internet for advice. Many people utilize the homeopathic bath of one quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup

rad Czerniejewski had every right to envision himself in a Texas Christian University baseball uniform, as the outfielder and recent Lake Forest High School graduate watched TCU battle in the College World Series on TV in June. He was a TCU recruit, after all, a future Horned Frog, all set to play where Chicago Cubs pitcher and 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta played in his sophomore and junior seasons. But Czerniejewski did not imagine such a purple-and-white sight. “I was rooting for TCU, just like I would root for my favorite pro baseball team or my favorite football team,” Czerniejewski says. Twice during the CWS in Omaha, Nebraska — TCU (50-18) would finish runner-up to the University of Florida — the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Czerniejewski had a very good reason not to make a snack run at home. The very good reason: TCU freshman relief pitcher Cal Coughlin, a 2016 LFHS graduate and one of Czerniejewski’s good friends. Coughlin made two CWS appearances and finished his rookie collegiate season with a 1-0 record, a 1.59 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings. Opponents batted .210 against him. “It was really cool to watch Cal pitch in those games and against that kind of competition,” says Czerniejewski, ranked No. 236 by Perfect Game in the scouting service’s Class of 2017 Top 500 national rankings. During the past four weeks, the former Scouts teammates took classes on campus and worked out together at TCU’s facilities in Fort Worth. Czerniejewski, a speedster with fantastic bat speed, plans to return to Lake Forest on Aug. 4 — and then return to TCU 10 days later for the official start of his freshman year. “The only advice I gave him was, ‘Compete, be competitive,’ ”

Playing right field at the time, Czerniejewski had thrown out a Stevenson base runner at home plate to end the bottom of the sixth inning when he soared near Lake Forest’s dugout to complete a high five with a teammate. His return to Earth in Lincolnshire was a rough one. Czerniejewski suffered a severely sprained ankle, shelving him for more than two weeks. Not being able to play probably hurt Czerniejewski more than the injury did. “That’s a moment I’ll remember for a while,” Del Fava says. “Tough one. But it showed Brad’s energy and his enthusiasm for the game. He’s one of those guys who simply loves baseball; that was obvious to his coaches, to his teammates, to anybody who watched him play. STAYING THE COURSE Competitive sailing brings out the best in Keenan BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
B
etween his eighth-grade and freshman years, Spencer Keenan loved contact sports. The Kenilworth resident — bound for New Trier at the time, in 2013 — had a thing for football, lacrosse, wrestling. He also owned pragmatism, as he browsed around at a sports/ club/activities fair for incoming freshmen. “I was pretty small [5-foot-6, 110 pounds],” the 2017 New Trier graduate recalls. “I knew, if I had tried out for sports like that, I would not have made any of those teams.” The New Trier Sailing booth caught his eye. The sport, he would learn, competed in the fall and spring seasons. Keenan had dipped his toe in that activity in the sixth grade, with other Kenilworth Sailing Club summer campers. “Fooling around on a Sunfish,” he says. Sailing turned a tad more serious for Keenan at Sheridan Shore Sailing School in Wilmette, where he learned to navigate 420s near Gillson Park in ensuing summers. “But I had no idea what to expect during New Trier tryouts,” he says. Five freshmen made the New Trier JV team in the fall of 2013. Keenan was one of them. “Second day of tryouts, I was sailing [on Lake Michigan] with a kid on a pretty windy day,” he recounts. “I was scared, but I was also having the time of my life. I wasn’t the skipper; I was crew then. I realized then how much I loved being on the water, how much I loved making a boat go faster. “I’m a speed junkie.” And a two-time state team champion (2016 and 2017). The former diminutive fair goer is a 6-0, 160-pounder today, pumped to join the sailing club at Santa Clara University in the fall. “Spencer is a real athlete, one of the most coachable athletes I’ve been around, with great potential,”

says Isaac Clark, who started coaching sailors at New Trier in 2016 and serves as head coach at Chicago Yacht Club, NT’s home base. “He is open to advice or criticism or commentary. Spencer keeps it simple; never overcomplicates things. Say there is little wind, and he’s sailing. All he thinks about is finding where there is more wind on a course. “He’s calm,” the coach adds. “Yet he also takes things very seriously in this sport. Spencer believes every opportunity to sail is also an opportunity to become a better sailor.” Summer is THE prime season to sail competitively, and Keenan — a summer instructor for kids and adults at the Kenilworth Sailing Club — has hit the water hard here and off the shorelines of other states since Graduation Day. In June he completed the National Offshore One Design (NOOD) regatta hosted by Chicago Yacht Club, a three-day event and part of the largest national sailboat race circuit in the U.S. Keenan raced with four other recent high school graduates, placing 12th in a field of 20. Many of the entrants were either pro or semi-pro sailors. Also in June, Keenan traveled to Texas to compete as a team member at the U.S. Youth Match
Racing National Championships (Rose Cup) — think little sibling of America’s Cup. Last August, he and crew mates went up against boats skippered by sailors from all over, including ones hailing from Malaysia and Australia, at a Grand Slam event hosted by Chicago Yacht Club. Keenan intends to make another Grand Slam appearance later this month. “Sailing has taken over my life,” says Keenan, a probable economics major at Santa Clara. “I’m looking forward to being a part of the program at Santa Clara, because it practices with Stanford, one of the best teams in the country. Sailors … they’re laidback people — until they race against you. Racers are intense and focused; they have to be. The sport of sailing has helped me become more focused in general. And it’s helped me socially, because I get to interact with sailors all over the country. “My parents [Patrick and Jennifer] love that I sail as much as I do. It gives them an excuse to travel with me out of state.” Keenan’s younger but taller brother, 6-foot-3 Quinn, will be a junior at New Trier in the fall. He’s another avid sailor in the Keenan family — thanks to a certain sib who knows a thing or
two about a jib. Quinn represented NT on water the past two school years and teamed up with Spencer this past spring at an invitational regatta near Annapolis, Maryland. “I had never sailed heading into my freshman year, and I was all set to play football and lacrosse,” Quinn says. “I went out sailing with Spencer, who taught me what I needed to know. He did a good job teaching me, and I fell in love with sailing. “My brother is my big competition, my main motivation. I try to do everything double what he did.” Their father wrestled at the prep level in New York, helping a squad win a state championship, Spencer notes. The brothers have grappled against each other several times in their basement. “We’ve broken tons of stuff while wrestling,” Quinn says. “My brother hates to lose. In anything. He was a very good competitor and a very good leader on our sailing teams. Teammates knew he was very knowledgeable in the boat. JV, freshman and sophomore sailors — they admired him and his leadership. Their goal was to be like him.” Spencer Keenan would like nothing more than to see Santa Clara University’s co-ed sailing club graduate to varsity status before he sets sail on his postcollege life. The SCU program, Keenan says, typically draws 30 student-athletes each year, with about half of them taking the commitment seriously. “Spencer,” NT coach Clark says, “will do whatever he can to elevate the program at Santa Clara. He gets frustrated, yes, if he doesn’t do what he expects from himself in sailing. But he has the mindset you want in an athlete. Spencer, super focused and always willing to put in the time, continues to look forward to the next race, the next opportunity to compete. “I know this: Spencer won’t stop sailing after college.”

E
arly one Sunday morning, circa 2005, Rev. Dr. Thomas Dickelman — founder and minister of the Community Church of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff — discovered one of his church’s places of worship had been commandeered by a small phalanx of … Girl Scouts. The venue then and now: the south shelter of Lake Bluff beach. “We didn’t have money to rent anywhere, after committing to hold services year-round, so we had to meet outside,” says the 61-year-old Dickelman, a Lake Forest resident and the former minister at Union Church of Lake Bluff. “The beach was my favorite place, and if we went early we could get there before anyone else — and before the guards were there to charge us.” Dickelman’s very first beach congregation had gathered in 2003 and matched the number of tennis players it takes to form a doubles team. “The three of us sat at a metal picnic table,” Dickelman recalls, while sitting with me at a corner table at the Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest for a breakfast of Eggs Benedict and hot tea. “Those Girls Scouts,” Dickelman adds, “were there on a campout, so we told the Lake Bluff Park District what we were doing and have rented the space each week ever since.” Dickelman’s church offers two services (8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m.) every Sunday and rents Lake Forest College’s Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel for the stretch of Sundays (usually 35) when a churchgoer wouldn’t dare leave home without donning either a heavy sweater or a parka. It’s not unusual today for the Community Church of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff to draw 225 worshippers each Sunday. Dickelman figures 275 families consider his church their church. “Originally I hoped we might have 80 families someday,” says Dickelman, who admits starting a church — with his money and without the backing from anybody else or from any organization — was “kind of a goofy idea.” Kind of scary: Dickelman didn’t receive his first paycheck for the
audacious undertaking until Year 3 (2002). “I had a vision … a vision of providing a ‘micro church’ for people,” says Dickelman, who, in 1983, graduated with a Master of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago and received a Doctor of Ministry from the same seminary eight years later. “I could not let go of it, despite being turned down to write my doctoral thesis on it because I was told it would never work. I saw a church that would not try to do everything but would do some things very well — primarily worship. “Our singular focus has been on feeding people spiritually. I felt there was a need for a spiritually progressive community on the North Shore, where people could worship without feeling pressure to join.” Don’t call a Community Church of Lake Forest and L a k e Bluff
churchgo e r a “member”; Dickelman doesn’t. Looking to join or spearhead a committee at a church with the Rockwellian (Dickelman’s word choice) backdrop of colorful sailboats in the distance and beaming toddlers playing in the sand on 17 Sunday mornings each year? Committees don’t exist at the church. Wondering if the church models itself after the model of a major denomination? Stop wondering. “Every other church I know has a single model it promotes or follows,” Dickelman says. “To be a member, you have to affirm and follow that model. We believe the job of our church is not to put forth

I see my job as a caregiver for families rooted in the Christian faith, as well as those from other traditions [Hebrew and Hindu, to name two].” Thomas Dickelman’s unique and wildly circuitous journey from bank-shot-loving prep hoopster to beach-loving minister deserves to be told on the silver screen (it’s a shame actor Michael Caine is 84 years old). While studying in Austria, as a sophomore at Illinois State University, Dickelman learned to ski and fell in love with the activity, prompting him to transfer to snowy Salt Lake City and the University of Utah; years later — after answering the call to serve at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis — he developed a passion for windsurfing, got certified as a windsurf instructor and then taught the challenging pursuit to some of his parishioners in a program dubbed “Aquatic Experience”; in 1986, unsure of his future as a minister, Dickelman sold his house in Indiana and most of his belongings and drove around Florida. “The one thing I really wanted to do back then was sail,” Dickelman says. “I lived in my car while I looked for the perfect live-aboard sailboat — I found it, in Fort Myers. Dickelman, along with musician Fred Koch and Chicago Sun-Times sports columnist Rick Telander, raised more than $30,000 through Net Gain, an inaugural event held at Lake Forest High School last month. Boys basketball players from Orr High School in Chicago traveled north to play Scouts players at the LFHS main gym and later received custom-made mouthguards — crafted by local dentists — as gifts. Funds also were earmarked for Orr’s hoops program (equipment, uniforms). The Community Church of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff launched KidsUganda 11 years ago. It’s now a stand-alone charity, with more than 75 folks having participated in “Adventures in Service” mission trips to Africa. Funds generated to date, for a school and orphanage in Mityana, Uganda: more than $1.5 million. “The church has blossomed in ways I’d never imagined,” Dickelman marvels. “I absolutely love what I do, love being present for people. But I don’t set myself apart from others; I’m like everybody else.” Dickelman reserves five to 10 minutes each service for a “Joys and Concerns” segment. Some churchgoers stand to share wonderful news or thoughts with the congregation, and others stand to express worries. “One Sunday a woman,” Dickelman recalls, “got up and said, ‘My joy is we have a minister who wears shorts with images of flying pigs on them.’ ” A smiling Dickelman pushes his chair back at the Deer Path Inn. He encourages me to glance at the part of his wardrobe I hadn’t noticed until that moment. The minister is wearing shorts. Those shorts. I think about oinking. I chuckle instead.
