We present a huge variety of classes and courses to keep you engaged, entertained and moving this season.

Our Adult Learning programme features everything from ancient history to current affairs; don’t miss 20th Century Jewish History, Roots of Religious Fundamentalism, Modern Jewish Literature and A Morning at the Opera, an opportunity to learn more about three operas you can see in London this summer.

Art Studio highlights include Hebrew Calligraphy, Photography, Life Drawing, Watercolour and the Summer Art School, four days of intensive craft and fine art workshops.

The Food & Drink programme features Sephardi Classics from Around the World, Baking without Sugar, Jewish Flavours of Italy, and Challah for Hunger, raising money for charity through baking and selling challah.

Health & Fitness classes include Rhythm Tap Dancing, Pilates Gold, Krav Maga and Tai Chi. You can also enjoy Table Tennis Coaching as part of our Ping Pong Festival, and Mind Sports Olympiad is back, with over sixty different board game tournaments and competitions.

Our How To: Series features enlightening masterclasses such as How To: Fix a Bike, How To: Manage Anxiety and How To: Dress Stylishly Through Colour.

Language classes include French, Arabic and Hebrew, with day and evening sessions at many levels so you can find a course that matches your level of expertise.

Our beliefs and expectations of childhood have changed radically over the centuries, and the invention of adolescence less than a hundred years ago has stretched the length of childhood still further. We’ll consider how current ideas on childhood developed, and what parents and grandparents need to understand to be most helpful to the children around them.

Explore the major currents, ideas and personalities that have characterised the Jewish people since 1900. We’ll focus on the shifting Jewish centres, Jewish internal life and how the crisis of modernity placed Jews at the forefront of cataclysmic events.

The Torah teaches us that we all have something special to offer the world. In these experiential workshops, discover how your inner voice, calm and strength are indeed very close. Learn simple and powerful tools to de-stress, and healing imagery to gain trust in yourself.

All cultures dream of ‘the good life’. Jewish tradition has mainly focused on looking forwards towards a time of peace, justice and contentment. Using texts and images from a wide range of sources, we’ll explore these ideas and their effects, seeing links between Jewish and non-Jewish belief systems.

EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT JUDAISM IN FOUR JOKES

8-10pm, £96 for the 6 week course ANDREW LEVY This course gives you guidance as to how the Chumash (the five books of Moses) is structured. By course end students will be able to give a dvar Torah – a short talk on a passage from the Torah. Taught in English with the original Hebrew text available, but knowledge of Hebrew is not a prerequisite.

A history, from today’s Middle East back to ancient Greece. Topics covered include Islamism, Hitler, Machiavelli, far-right extremism and Aristotle’s justification of slavery.

We explore Russia’s intervention in the Middle East, the new rivalry been Russia and the West and why Russian foreign policy might scare the USA and Israel.

WHAT IS TERRORISM? A STUDY THROUGH THE AGES 10.30am-12.30pm, £20 per session, £160 for the 10 week course WILLIAM TYLER MBE The well-known saying that ‘one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter’ lies at the heart of this question. Amongst other groups, we’ll look at zealots and assassins in the medieval Middle East, Robespierre’s Reign of Terror in 18th century France, colonial terrorism and Pol Pot’s regime in Cambodia.

SHYLOCK AND OTHERS: HOW THE JEW APPEARS IN ENGLISH LITERATURE 10am-12noon, £20 per session, £160 for the 10 week course ANGELA GLUCK To mark 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare, we’ll look closely at The Merchant of Venice’s Shylock, and ask whether this might have been a positive representation of ‘the Jew’. Using texts and some film versions, we’ll explore other images of ‘the Jew’ in English writing across the centuries.

ART STUDIO Welcome to the JW3 Art Studio, where you can learn a variety of craft and fine art skills taught by practising contemporary artists with experience in teaching adults. Places in each class are limited so it is essential to pre-book your place. These classes are for adults. WATERCOLOUR Wednesdays 11 May – 29 June, 7.30-9.30pm or Fridays 20 May – 8 July, 10.30am-12.30pm £17 per session, £120 for the 8 week course RUTIE BORTHWICK Learn the basics of watercolour, a relatively quick way to draw and a delicate technique perfect for the beginner. Rutie Borthwick is a fine artist who paints on unusual surfaces as well as traditional canvasses.

We’ll experiment with mark-making, explore different drawing materials and gain confidence to express thoughts and observations through drawing.

PHOTOGRAPHY CALANIT LAUFER Understand how your camera works, and how to control light and composition. With a range of different situations from indoor studio and portraiture, to night photography whilst shooting outside, this course will give you the confidence and enthusiasm to capture anything on camera.

BOMBERG’S PAINTING LEGACY 1.30-3.30pm, £17 per session, £90 for the 6 week course NIGEL CAPLE Nigel Caple was taught by one of David Bomberg’s closest students and adherents, Miles Richmond. This course will introduce students to experimental approaches in both painting and drawing, giving them the opportunity to develop their individual practise as artists.

Learn traditional and experimental techniques of screen-printing. Create colourful repeated patterns to be printed on lengths of fabric – that can then be used to make special customised quilts, cushions, or handmade clothing.

Judith specialises in experimental printmaking and ceramics.

This workshop will introduce techniques on how to observe the model, measure proportions and construct a portrait.

You will produce a bust with a balance of anatomical accuracy and stylistic finish.

Benedict specialises in contemporary sculpture.

Learn basic hand-quilting techniques, including how to combine fabrics and compose your quilt, layering the quilt sandwich, top-stitching, beading and applique. Some fabrics will be available, but students are encouraged to bring their own. Eleanor is a passionate quilter.

Using ink, collage, paint and paper, we’ll break down stories and work out what pictures we thirst to see, and how to work the words. Bring an idea or a piece of text you like, and go home with your own artists’ book. Sophie is an artist and poet.

Whether you’re a total beginner or an advanced speaker you’ll be impressed by the skills of our friendly tutors and how quickly your language skills improve.

HEBREW Total Beginners Familiar or not with the Hebrew alphabet, we recommend starting here in order to be able to read without vowels as well as to write and build up basic conversation.

Not Quite Beginners For those who have started to read the Hebrew alphabet both in block and script and have a vocabulary of about 50 words.

Beginners I For those who can read comfortably, form simple sentences, have knowledge of basic verbs in the present tense and infinitives and a vocabulary of 300-400 words.

Beginners III Become confident handling the past tense, discussing newspaper headlines and listening to Hebrew recordings.

Intermediate I As your skills improve, use of the past tense is revised and the future tense is taught. Students will learn to use Hebrew in everyday.

Intermediate II Using newspapers and special TV programmes, there will be more developed conversations and further use of the future tense.

Advanced I We will use a variety of media and elaborate on texts from newspapers to take your Hebrew to the next level.

Advanced III For those who know present, past and future tenses and read more advanced newspaper articles.

Very Advanced Conversation Students will watch news from Israel and converse on leading topics of the day as well as other relevant topics.

ARABIC Total Beginners Familiar or not with the Arabic alphabet, we recommend starting here in order to read, write as well as speak.

Not Quite Beginners For those who know the alphabet and can ask and answer simple questions.

FRENCH Beginners III Improve your reading and conversation skills, and improve your vocabulary for conversing on general topics.

Intermediate Improve your speaking skills and vocabulary through reading articles in French and discussing them.

Advanced Conversation For confident French speakers. The group will discuss historical and topical items of interest.

JW3 CINEMA Our boutique cinema screens a weekly mix of the best new releases from around the world, plus Jewish and Israeli films curated by our partner UK Jewish Film.

REFUND POLICY Refunds for classes and courses are generally not given, except at JW3’s discretion (unless we cancel the class or course, in which case refunds are automatic) when JW3 receives at least five working days’ notice of withdrawal before the course is due to start. Where possible, a credit note will be issued and must be redeemed within six months of issue, after which it will automatically lapse.

JW3 cannot be held responsible for changes due to an individual’s personal circumstances which might prevent attendance.

The Six Point Foundation survivor enrichment programme grant can, at JW3’s discretion, provide an 80% reduction for entrance to a wide range of events at JW3 for those Holocaust survivors and refugees who would like to attend but have financial needs.
