Precious memories, neatly boxed I HAD TIME FOR SOME REAL MOMENTS of reflection this month as I rooted through a couple of boxes in my parents’ basement. They have lived in the same house since the mid-1960s and, as you can imagine, have a basement full of mementos.

This was a serious trip down memory lane.

One box was filled with “treasures” from my high school and college years: Copies of newspapers from my first internship, an edited version of my very first interview, a recipe folder from my high school home economics class.

Can you imagine learning to make a luncheon meat barbecue at age 16?

The contents of the other box were not familiar to me. I peeked at the newspaper used to wrap a large coffee-table book for clues: It was a copy of the New York Times from 1964!

Unlike the box of my goodies from the ’70s, which had been sitting on the somewhat damp concrete floor, this box from the early ’60s was on a shelf and everything was perfectly preserved.

And the box was filled with genuine family gems. Out of a large envelope fell letters that my grandmother had carefully saved. Most were written to my mother by her grandmother, an aunt and others. Some were written by my mother to others. What an amazing slice of life from times long ago!

After I showed my mother, she spent the next few hours reliving the ’30s and early ’40s, when these gems were written.

There were folders with receipts of bills paid in my parents’ early years of marriage; tax returns written in pencil; several silver baby cups engraved with my name. I was also happy to find photos from my early years.

I had never seen many photos from when I was a baby, and I figured that they just didn’t

exist. But there I was in black and white, and grainy color, with some faded Polaroids thrown in.

But, in my opinion, the best part of the entire box was a panoramic photograph of my mother and her fellow campers at Camp Wohelo, in Pennsylvania, circa 1938 or 1939.

She would have been 9 or 10 years old.

The photo is well-preserved, though it had been rolled up all these years.

It’s now being framed.

Finding this photo led us to wonder whether the all-girls overnight camp was still in existence, so we turned to Google. For those wondering – the Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, camp closed in the 1980s and the property is now part of Capital Camps, purchased by the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington to serve that community.

This discovery led to a discussion of other camps that family members had attended and more online searches and, well, you can probably imagine where this went: We spent hours happily reminiscing about summers gone by.

Sifting through the content of the boxes, looking at the photos and letters and talking about days long gone would normally have been a pleasant way to spend an afternoon with my parents. But after not seeing them for more than a year and a half due to the pandemic, it was an incredible gift.

None of us is getting any younger, and the time for hearing these stories is now. I only hope my memory stays as sharp as my mother’s so I can one day pass along the stories to my children and grandchildren.

For now, I will treasure the new information I learned and reflect on the pictures I brought home. And write down as much as I can remember!

High-fashion designer Amy Page DeBlasio creates her unique clothes in Pawtucket

BY ROBERT ISENBERG WHEN AMY PAGE DEBLASIO was 12, she traveled to Italy with her family. She visited the Uffizi Gallery, in Florence, where she found “The Birth of Venus,” the famous Renaissance painting by Sandro Botticelli. She took out her sketchbook and started to draw her own version of the portrait.

“I’ve always been artistic,” says DeBlasio, who is now 33 and has carved out a career as one of Rhode Island’s leading fashion designers.

“My mother is a lawyer, my father is a doctor. I’m sure they’d love it if I was a heart surgeon. But they wanted me to explore my creativity from a young age. When I was doing an art project, I could sit there for hours.”

DeBlasio discovered fashion as a student at the Gordon School, in East Providence. She credits her art teacher, Toni Dumville, with introducing her to fabric.

For a textiles assignment, DeBlasio created a wrap skirt with two fabrics that clashed dramatically. DeBlasio liked the clash. The sharp contrast of different patterns became the hallmark of her designs, and it continues to this day.

“I don’t know what compelled me,

but I begged my mother for a sewing machine,” says DeBlasio, who put the new acquisition to good use.

As a teenager attending the Wheeler School, she continued to experiment with clothing and even made her own prom dress. While her peers preferred long, sparkly gowns in silver, DeBlasio’s dress was short and multi-layered with gold highlights. She created a necktie so her date would match her offbeat ensemble.

“I have a way of mixing fabrics. A normal person would think, ‘Those two don’t go together.’ I really try to push the boundaries, but still keep it a balanced composition.”

DeBlasio specializes in high-end designs, garments that can sell for hundreds of dollars apiece. Her catalog is colorful and frenetic: leggings covered in taxicab graphics; a pixelated shawl; a denim jacket patterned with metallic paint. These are the bold styles that dominate in New York fashion circles, styles that are as much fine art as clothing.

“I don’t like to design what I see out

in the world,” DeBlasio says. “I don’t follow trends. I design what I like.

I’ve tried to blend urban attitude with edgy sophistication.”

Despite her high-concept design work, DeBlasio is down-to-earth. She grew up on the East Side of Providence and has been a lifelong member of Temple Emanu-El. She has taken a Birthright trip to Israel, a formative journey that she says strengthened her connection to Judaism.

Today, DeBlasio and her husband are raising their two children with a strong Jewish framework. She wears a necklace that displays her Jewish name.

“Judaism has always been a big part of my upbringing and a key part of who I am,” she says. “[The Birthright trip] really blew me away. No matter how different we were, we all shared that unbreakable bond of Judaism. I finally was old enough to really understand. I felt part of a greater whole.”

After high school at Wheeler, DeBlasio experimented with jewelry and considered studying metal design.

She took classes at the Rhode Island School of Design, but it was at the University of Rhode Island that she earned a bachelor’s degree in Textiles, Fashion, Merchandising and

Design – as well as a B.A. in Italian Language and Literature. Now her family lives in Rumford, a short drive from her studio.

Visiting DeBlasio’s website, you may think that her business is a larger operation than it is. The layout is sleek and professional, and the online catalog is rich with offerings for both men and women.

Rhode Island Monthly has named DeBlasio the Best Fashion Designer three years in a row, which is all the more impressive for a company that was founded in 2017.

Yet APD is a surprisingly small operation. DeBlasio designs every item herself; she has one part-time assistant and a local seamstress to help out.

DeBlasio is committed to ethical production, and all the retail clothing is put together in New York City. Otherwise, she handles nearly every aspect of the business herself, from conception to distribution to social media. This, on top of raising two sons, makes DeBlasio one busy designer.

“Even when it gets really tough – and it does, a lot of times – I really couldn’t picture myself doing anything else,” says DeBlasio. “When a CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

‘Justice, justice thou shall pursue’ PARASHAT SHOFTIM

NEAR THE BEGINNING of next week’s Torah portion, Shoftim (Hebrew for Judges, Deut. 16:17-21:9), we find a verse that begins: “Justice, justice (Tzedek, tzedek) thou shall pursue” (Deut. 16:20). Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch (Germany, 1808-1888) describes this commandment as “our highest unique purpose as a people, to be striven for purely for itself, to which all other considerations have to be subordinate …. To pursue justice unceasingly with all devotion is Israel’s one task.”

And Rabbi Bakhya ben Asher (Spain, 1255-1340) taught that the repetition of the word tzedek means justice under any circumstance, whether for profit or loss, whether in word or action, whether for Jew or non-Jew. Pursuing justice is not a recommendation or suggestion; it is a commandment, a mitzvah. We are not to stroll after justice, or walk casually in pursuit of it, but to pursue justice passionately, consistently and deliberately.

The Hebrew verb tirdof, “pursue,” conveys intensity, intentionality and commitment. Alongside tzedek, “justice,” the only other thing we are commanded to pursue in this way is Shalom. As Martin Luther King Jr. taught, there can be no peace if there is no justice.

Moses reminds them that for this to happen, they must pursue justice both individually and collectively with all their minds, hearts and souls, and they are to use all their material, financial and physical resources to do so.

RABBI Our Torah IRVIN WISE teaches us this eternal truth: We cannot have a society that is pleasing to God that is unjust, and that justice is expensive – but not anywhere nearly as costly as life in a society deficient in or devoid of justice, as we Jews certainly know.

If we are to truly understand the mitzvah of tzedek, tzedek tirdof (“justice, justice thou shall pursue”), we need to distinguish between what may be legal and what is just.

At times these are the same, but often they are extremely, painfully and tragically different (subscribe to the Equal Justice Initiative’s free, daily “History of Racial Injustice” to learn literally, sadly and graphically the difference).

It was legal for our government to imprison Japanese-Americans in detention camps during World War II, but was it just?

formative stages. She and Corrales-Diaz had never met before, and the curator had no idea that APD was based in Pawtucket, home of the Pawtucket Red Sox baseball team before it migrated to Worcester, Massachusetts.

The exhibit gave her a chance to deconstruct baseball jerseys and make them her own. She has two entries on display, one jersey covered in images of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the other reimagined as a woman’s

ment to massacre the indigenous peoples of this land, confiscate their (sacred) lands and, even today, continue to violate many of the treaties we made with them, but was it, is it, just?

And, of course, slavery was absolutely legal in the United States for 250 years, as was the “right” of slaveholders to do whatever they wished to those enslaved by them … but was it just?

Segregation was legal until the mid-1960s; not allowing interracial marriages was legal until 1967; Jim Crow laws were legal and enforced until 1965. But were these, and so many similar laws, just?

Imprisoning juveniles in adult prisons for life without parole is legal; putting inmates into solitary confinement for weeks, months and even years is legal; executing human beings even while knowing that many innocent people are in prison, including some on death row, is legal; keeping people locked up because they cannot afford bail is legal; long sentences imprisoning people for non-violent and minor crimes is legal. But are these just?

Our rabbis understood that the repetition of the word tzedek is to teach us that we need to pursue justice for the innocent, but also for the guilty. Thinking about all those who are innocent but

Many of DeBlasio’s peers have left Rhode Island to seek their fortunes in fashion hotspots like New York or Los Angeles. DeBlasio does have a strong relation-

are languishing in prison, can any of us imagine what it is like being imprisoned when innocent, being locked up in a cell for years and years?

Treating immigrants, refugees and asylum-seekers (including teenagers, children and infants) the way we do is legal, but is it just?

How can we Jews forget the 36 times in our Torah that we are commanded to take care of strangers, the disenfranchised and vulnerable just as we take care of our own?

Gerrymandering and limiting voting rights and opportunities may be legal, but are these just? Prohibiting women from voting was legal until 1920, but was that just?

Limiting, if not eliminating, women’s reproductive rights is legal today, but is this just?

Prohibiting teaching uncomfortable truths about our nation’s genesis and history is becoming legal in some states, as was, not very long ago, the prohibition against teaching evolution in our schools. Is this just?

For a people who are commanded to devote ourselves to the truth – even one of our names for God, Emet, means truth – is this not a most urgent and serious issue?

Remember, too, that everything that Hitler and the Nazis did in Germany before and during the Holocaust was 100% legal.

“I am not leaving Rhode Island!” she exclaims. “I am happy here. I make it work. I am determined to make it.”

As Jews, we must not simply be concerned with what might be legal; we must be absolutely concerned with what is just. We are commanded to pursue justice in all places and at all times, whether or not it is popular, convenient or aligned with our political preferences and personal biases.

Pursuing justice is to unite all of us as Jews, and as Jews we are not to stroll or walk casually after it. For over 3,000 years, we have been commanded to pursue justice intensely, uncompromisingly, consistently and passionately: “Justice, justice thou shall pursue!”

Let us fulfill this mitzvah as individuals, as Jewish communities and as Americans, and let us teach our children to devote their lives to pursuing justice. Another interpretation of why the word “justice” (tzedek) is repeated is to remind us that to pursue justice is hard, at times seemingly impossible, but we should never become discouraged and should continue pursuing it every day.

There were two letters in the July [2021] Jewish Rhode Island critical of Israel's defense in the Gaza war.

The writers blame Israel for the conflict and casualties. Hamas uses hospitals and schools as military installations to increase their own civilian casualties for public sympathy and to take away attention from Hamas targeting Israeli civilians. Also, many of the dead in Gaza were from Hamas rockets landing on their own people.

The sworn mission of Hamas is to kill all the Jews in the world.

Here are two quotes from the Hamas Charter to remind people who Israel is fighting: “Israel will exist, and will continue to exist, until Islam abolishes it, as it abolished that which was before it.”

“The hour of judgment shall not come until the Muslims fight the Jews and kill them, so that the Jews hide behind trees and stones, and each tree and stone will say: ‘Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him,’ except for the Gharqad tree, for it is the tree of the Jews.”

Short of national suicide, nothing Israel can do will appease Hamas.

the summer of 2007, I confess that I had taken my American identity for granted. While I have been a lifelong Democrat, until the past several years I believed that our Republican leadership offered a reasonable balance to the excesses of the Democratic Party. In short, I was comfortable with my unexamined belief that our system of checks and balances would keep our nation chugging along with only some occasional minor hiccups.

The rise of Donald Trump and Trumpism has now convinced me that our democracy, which I had naively assumed runs on autopilot, is now in need of our immediate and intense help. We can no longer call ourselves the United States, for we are now so utterly disunited. Today, we are living in a country where a minority of our population is seeking to disavow the democratic principle of majority rule.

It is now time for us Jews who care about the survival of our country, which has been the land of opportunity for most of us, to call on our prophetic tradition to restore the prophetic element within our American tradition.

Like the vast majority of my fellow American Jews, I support the effort to secure and expand the voting rights of every one of my fellow citizens.

Many of us draw our inspiration for this viewpoint from the social idealism of such biblical prophets as Amos, who more than 2,700 years ago proclaimed, “Let justice well forth as the waters, and righteousness as an ever-flowing stream.”

And many of us also draw inspiration from the prophetic vision

that permeates Israel’s Hakhrazat HaAtzma’ut, or Declaration of Independence, which makes explicit that “The State of Israel …will uphold the full social and political equality of all citizens, without distinction of race, creed, or sex.”

We American Jews have two collective stories to tell: our evolving and compelling story as Jews and the evolving and equally compelling story of our identity as Americans. One of our stories began in 1654; the other began 3,200 years ago, when, during our exodus from Egypt, we discovered our primary identity as “slaves liberated by God” – an identity that has shaped us to be pursuers of justice! justice! throughout the ages wherever we have happened to find ourselves.

Meanwhile, Saralee’s best friend, Harold, whose family owns a rival Jewish restaurant, is plotting his own Sukkot celebration. Trouble stirs the pot when Saralee’s soup overpowers everyone’s tastebuds and ruins their appetites.

BY LISA MAYBRUCH LET'S CALL THE WHOLE THING DELICIOUS! No Jewish bakery is complete without a platter of these puffy pastries. And now, you can make rugelach at home. So pre-heat that oven and channel some patience because it's time for one of my favorite anytime treats. Just follow the recipe below, and you’ll be enjoying some melt-in-your mouth,

Rugelach is Yiddish for “little twists.” They were first baked in Austria and Poland, and you can find them all over the world. My family is obsessed with rugelach.

We have sampled and rated just about every version in Southern New England. We can tell you which bakeries have perfected these little bites of paradise and who

has disgraced the rugelach history. Our strict rating system includes crispness, chewiness and flavor profile, just to name a few. This isn’t a task we take lightly.

My early memories of rugelach include a fruitfilled, cream cheese-based cookie, but as I got older and explored the world of pastry, I discovered a yeast-based dough that I had to perfect.

Until recently, pastries and

breads felt intimidating, but with some practice and many (many) pep talks, I have overcome my fear, and I’m having fun! I hope I can encourage you to give this recipe a try because the result is so worth it. If anything, there’s a lot of kneading, punching and rolling, which are great stress relievers.

Rugelach INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

DOUGH: 2 1/4 cups (270 g) unbleached all-purpose flour 1/2 tablespoon (5g) dry active yeast 1/4 + 1/8 teaspoon (2.5 g) Kosher salt 1 tablespoon (6g) cornstarch 4 tablespoons (57g) unsalted butter, melted 1 egg, room temperature 1 tablespoon (25g) canola oil 1/2 cup (125g) milk 1/8 cup (30g) raw honey

MAKE THE DOUGH: In a microwave safe bowl, heat milk to approx. 110 degrees F. Place yeast in milk and let sit for about 10 minutes until yeast has activated. In a separate large bowl, combine the flour, salt and cornstarch. Whisk to combine. Make a well in the center of the bowl, then add the melted butter, eggs, oil, milk and yeast mixture, and honey. Stir with a spoon to combine.

When the mixture becomes thick and sticky, start mixing by hand. Begin kneading the dough in the bowl, by hand, until it becomes fairly smooth, and forms a ball. This should take about 3 minutes of kneading. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and let the dough rise at room temperature for about 1.5 hours or until it has doubled in volume.

CHOCOLATE FILLING: 1/4 cup (25g) unsweetened cocoa powder 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 1/4 cup (50g) dark brown sugar, packed 1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt 1/4 cup (73g) Nutella spread CINNAMON FILLING: 1/8 cup (56 grams) unsalted butter, softened 6 tablespoons (75 grams) packed light brown sugar 3/4 tablespoon (5 grams) ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon cornstarch SIMPLE SYRUP 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup granulated sugar

MAKE CHOCOLATE FILLING: Meanwhile, make the filling. Combine all ingredients until the mixture is totally smooth, with no lumps remaining. Set aside.

SHAPE THE RUGELACH: Divide the risen dough into 2 equal pieces. Sprinkle your work surface generously with flour. Sprinkle the dough lightly with flour. Roll one piece of dough out into a large rectangle. The dough should be very thin.

Add more flour under the dough as you roll, to prevent sticking.

Spread the chocolate filling onto the rectangle of dough in a thin layer, using a small offset spatula or spoon.

Leave 1/2-inch border all around.

With the long edge facing you, fold the dough up in half lengthwise, enclosing the chocolate filling. Gently tug the edges and corners to meet, and use fingertips to press down the edges to seal. This helps prevent the chocolate filling from escaping.

Use a pizza wheel or sharp chef's knife to cut the dough into large triangles. Pick up one triangle, and gently stretch the triangle out even more lengthwise. Place the dough back down on the work surface, and roll the dough – starting from the straight edge top of the triangle, rolling down into a crescent shape.

Repeat with remaining dough and cinnamon filling.

Place the shaped rugelach on a baking sheet, lined with parchment paper. Place the rugelach close together, it's okay if they are touch-

ing. Repeat the same process with the remaining triangles of dough. Cover with a plastic wrap, and let proof at room temperature for 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 370 degrees. Beat 1 egg in a small bowl, and brush the top of each rugelach with beaten egg.

Bake for about 18-20 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through to ensure even browning. If baking at a higher temperature, check rugelach early to prevent burning.

MAKE THE SIMPLE SYRUP: In a small saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Whisk to combine. Allow the mixture to come to a boil, and let simmer for 3 minutes, until the mixture thickens slightly, and all of the sugar dissolves.

Once the rugelach have finished baking, remove from the oven and drizzle the rugelach immediately with the simple syrup.

I

love taking photos, though I seldom refer to myself as a photographer. There aren’t many titles I happily wear.

More often than not, George will suffice.

Compared to painting and sculpture, I’m not seriously interested in the art of photography. And quite seldom do I think of famous photographers as great artists. Of course, I was delighted in 1996 to conduct a phone interview with famed fashion and portrait photographer Richard Avedon, so I could learn about his father’s life as a furrier in Woonsocket.

THOUGH I WOULD NEVER pay a significant amount to purchase a photograph, I’m a fervent collector of photos. Indeed, I have created about 100 albums of my own photos over nearly 40 years.

Early in my career as an album-maker, perhaps a few hundred prints would fill a volume. In recent years, a typical album, handcrafted in Italy, protects about 700 horizontal and vertical prints.

I am particularly busy taking photos when I travel, but I habitually take photos in my East Side neighborhood and elsewhere around Rhode Island too. I’m far more interested in taking pictures of cities and towns than forests and pastures, though I have shot a favorite seaside spot in Maine for nearly three decades.

Photography raises questions about how I perceive my local

and far-flung travels. Usually, the word “vacation” does not apply. Betsey and I are as busy as possible when venturing near or far; seldom do we go somewhere merely for relaxation.

Fortunately, neither my wife nor I need to escape burdensome responsibilities or nagging chores. Indeed, when completing a brief or a lengthy journey, we’re usually quite happy to return to our quite comfortable home and our daily rhythms.

The number of photos I take in a day or during a month-long journey has increased exponentially over the decades. For example, as a student in Florence, Italy, in 1969, I probably took fewer than 10 rolls of blackand-white prints.

Instead, to record my observations, I kept a daily journal. I also purchased slides in museum shops to use in lectures when I became an art history professor.

Eventually, I took tens of thousands of my own slides and carefully organized them by subject. Fortunately, I still have a slide projector and a few extra lightbulbs!

My embrace of color prints surely increased after I met Betsey, since I wanted to celebrate all the happiness she brought me. And the number of prints fabulously increased after Molly and Michael were born. And I also sought to further portray my parents and in-laws when they became grandparents.

Despite my relative disinterest in technology, my life significantly changed again, less than a decade ago, when I began to experiment with digital photography. Not that I ever purchased a cellphone to use for making calls! Now I can easily shoot a few hundred digital shots in an afternoon, or 3,000 or 4,000 on a two-week journey. Of course, becoming a grandparent also may have contributed to my output.

So what do I plan to do with my scores of albums and others that I continually create? Our kids will surely be welcome to whatever they want, but they’ll never have enough space for most of them.

I actually inherited my album-making obsession from my mother, but my siblings and I didn’t know what to do with the dozens she left behind. I still feel ashamed that we couldn’t preserve more than a few.

I’m always striving to improve, and often I do, but for no obvious reason. Ironically, I take many of my best shots when I’m in a hurry or in some sense

abandon control.

Nearly five decades ago, when taking drawing and painting classes, I began to learn about composition – how to perceive and organize the elements of design. And I’m still searching for that perfect arrangement.

But I have also learned that luck may allow everything to magically fall into place.

Yes, serendipity may be the secret to a wonderful journey.

Beyond my quite deliberate efforts to plan a daily itinerary, I hope to see and experience the world in fresh and unimagined ways.

Given that Betsey and I are Italophiles – we know and treasure that country in so many ways – I recently gave myself a challenge. Why not put aside such familiar subjects as museums, palaces, plazas, churches and synagogues, and create a photo essay about people? So I examined digital photos from five trips, Milano to Messina, and selected about 75 portraits. I had no idea that I had so few – or so many.

Not surprisingly, most of the Italians I portrayed were hotel staff, waiters, shopkeepers, drivers and other people whom tourists routinely encounter. Nevertheless, these were individuals I somehow cared about – even if for only a few days or a few moments. Most seemed proud to pose in their beautiful uniforms or garments, often amid stately or elegant surroundings. While some gestured in dramatic ways, others merely grinned or nodded.

Instantaneously, these Italians became old friends – even if I didn’t know their names or never saw more than a few again.

Then I pondered why I haven’t taken many similarly endearing portraits in Rhode Island.

I wish that I had an answer.

Perhaps the most basic is that here at home I’m reluctant to bother strangers, or sense that they don’t want to be bothered.

Often when I encounter fellow pedestrians, they seem afraid to say hello.

Rather than preserving the past, photography, at its best, is a mechanism for seizing a moment. Thus, photography also allows me to experience what I don’t know and acknowledge so much that I never will.

Photography is also prayer, for it allows me to celebrate the miracles of love and vision.

While the weather during our stay at the inn wasn’t quite conducive to a swim in the sea, I am not complaining. Instead, I am complimenting the elegance of this little tea luxury. Totally worth the price, for the likes of me.

Summertime for me has always included a quest for new books to take MIKE FINK to small nooks for private and solitary pleasures. My good friends Betsey and George Goodwin presented me (gift-wrapped and ribboned) with a book titled “American Birds” and subtitled “A Literary Companion” – perfect for me. The excerpts are dated from 1782 to 2017, and written by the likes of Thoreau and Emerson, Emily Dickinson and Rachel Carson.

I’VE BEEN TRYING to collect a few fine moments from this summer – with the pleasant prospect that August may add to my treasures.

We spent an early June weekend in Chatham, on Cape Cod, and my choice of mental “snapshots” was a tiny shack with an unkempt front yard, right in the midst of the town. It’s a museum! And the weeds are actually the native wildflowers of long ago! The front room is a birthing chamber, and as a miniaturist, I was charmed by this wee celebration of yesteryear.

On the brink of July, with its jubilations galore, we gathered with our son and his family at the Weekapaug Inn, in Westerly, with its genuine log fireplace and its fresh staircase mural (by Rhode Island School of Design students) of native shorebirds among the pleasure boats – but my toast is to the tea in the lobby.

I paid ten bucks – $10! – for a cup of Earl Grey, but wait! It was served in a fine French cup, with a saucer, and the cream was in a small

swims in my hidden, or public, lakes, both in Rhode Island (I won’t divulge the locations) and nearby Massachusetts. As for swims in the great ocean this summer, here’s my report: Yes, in coves, rivers and for a few fast plunges into the high

tides of our shorelines. I totally need these dips for my skin … all the way through to my soul.

As I write these reminiscences, I am looking forward to a trip to the nation’s capital, if it is possible, to visit our daughter Lily and her family.

And this summer, as in summers past, I will light two candles for my mother, who was born on Aug. 2 and died on Aug. 2. This is also one of my summer treasures, since grief is often followed by our state motto: Hope.

Sorrows are sacred, but so is the pursuit of happiness, as time and tide go by.

Reflecting on those lessons before Rosh Hashanah is healing for me, and a good way to prepare for the coming new year.

Here is a story that my father told me, which is also in my book: “Whenever we stayed with my grandmother, she would always tell us a story about a little boy and girl who, while walking through the woods, found a little boy who was crying. When they asked him why he was crying, he said he was hungry, so they took him home, made sure he ate and then they brought him to his own home.

“My grandmother’s story was intended to emphasize that the Torah (the Hebrew Bible) teaches us to perform mitzvahs (Hebrew word for a kind deed or considerate act). Now this is probably true in all religions, but in Judaism the purpose of mankind is to do good in the world. The phrase in Hebrew is Tikkun Olam,

Holocaust education strengthened in R.I., in the pipeline in Mass.

BY LARRY KESSLER EFFORTS BY RHODE ISLAND AND MASSACHUSETTS to make Holocaust education mandatory in their schools read like a tale of two states: The Ocean State has done so, while Massachusetts’ latest attempt is again making its way through the state Legislature.

The R.I. General Assembly passed a law in 2016 requiring Holocaust and genocide education in middle and high school??, and Gov. Daniel McKee in July signed additional legislation creating a permanent commission “to promote and continually improve genocide and Holocaust education in schools,” according to a news release from the bill’s sponsors, Rep. Rebecca Kislak and Sen. Gayle L. Goldin.

The commission’s goal is to implement the 2016 law.

In Massachusetts, House and Senate bills with similar goals of requiring Holocaust education received a hearing in May, and now await action to move to the next stage: votes in both chambers. Similar efforts have failed in past legislative sessions.

Here’s a closer look at the Holocaust-education initiatives in both states:

Rhode Island

Before the new commission was created, the 2016 law lacked an enforcement mechanism, said Paula Olivieri, education coordinator at the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center, which is housed in the Alliance’s Dwares Jewish Community Center, in Providence.

“The commission will oversee the law requiring Holocaust and genocide education. The hope is that it will ensure” compliance with the 2016 law, Olivieri said.

According to the bill, “the Holocaust and Genocide Education Commission will gather and disseminate Holocaust and genocide information, work with the Department of Education to update and promote statewide Holocaust and geno-

The bill’s sponsors say they are encouraged by the creation of the commission.

“Given the hate and bigotry that is common in public discourse today, it is especially important to educate students about the incredible damage that prejudice and intolerance have caused throughout history,” said Goldin, whose grandparents fled the pogroms in Eastern Europe for Canada.

“The best way to ensure our future generations never repeat these actions is to teach them about the impact the Holocaust and other genocides have had in our world. Learning about our past provides perspective on current world events. It is also an opportunity for people to

She spoke passionately about the Holocaust and the genocide-education bill during a previous hearing, on Aug. 3, 2020.

“We only combat hate with education and meaningful dialogue, and that’s what this bill does; that’s why I’m proud to stand today and support it,” she said. “I am the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor, and the vast majority of that branch of my family was completely wiped out in the Holocaust.”

Rausch, in a phone interview, said she’s a co-sponsor of the bill this year, and is hopeful it will pass the Senate, as it did last year. But she stressed that schools shouldn’t wait for the legislation to be approved to start teaching about the Holocaust and other genocides. She urged teachers to use available resources to work toward that goal.

“It’s becoming more important that we engage” people given the resurgence of anti-Semitic incidents, she said.

“I know the significance of using ‘Auschwitz’ as a football term,” which the Duxbury High team had been doing for years, until it was widely reported in the media and led to the firing of the football coach at the Massachusetts school.

“The truth is that if we don’t [educate people], history is doomed to repeat itself,” Rausch warned.

“The way to generate healing is through education,” she added.

Educators: Holocaust education helps ensure we never forget

HOLOCAUST EDUCATION can play a major role in making both students and adults more aware of the genocide, say two educators with experience in the field.

Paula Olivieri, the education coordinator at the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center, in Providence, said in an interview that the legislation recently passed by the R.I. General Assembly to create a permanent commission to promote and continually improve genocide and Holocaust education will go a long way toward making more people aware of the atrocities of the Holocaust.

Asked if she thinks Holocaust education can reduce anti-Semitism in schools, such as at Duxbury High School, in Massachusetts, where the football team reportedly had been using “Auschwitz” as a term to call football plays for several seasons, she said she’s optimistic that it can.

“You find that students are more aware of the Holocaust and genocides” in states where Holocaust education is mandatory, she said.

Currently, 18 states, including Rhode Island, require Holocaust education, and there will be 19 next year, when Arkansas’ law takes effect, according to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Another educator, Charlotte Sheer, who founded the Holocaust Stamps Project at Foxboro Regional Charter School in the 2008-09 school year, knows that Holocaust education works, because she did so on her own at a time when only five states required it.

The stamps project was embraced by the entire school, she said.

“For 10 years, students in kindergarten through grade 12 worked together, trimming and counting stamps, and creating 18 stamps collage artworks depicting aspects

of the Holocaust. Making children aware of the historical facts opened the door to understanding how destructive prejudice can be,” she said.

“Today’s children are tomorrow’s parents – and leaders. What is taught in school today provides the foundation for how tomorrow’s adults will conduct their lives and treat each other,” Sheer added.

Recent remarks by public figures using the Holocaust to make political points seem to support the notion that more Holocaust education is needed. Two recent incidents – one national and one locally – illustrate this point.

• Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in May compared the Nazis’ persecution and murder of 6 million Jews to people being urged or ordered to wear masks during the pandemic, and/or being asked for their COVID19 vaccination status.

• A Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School Committee member, Katie Ferreira-Aubin, in July compared requiring vaccines and vaccine passports to the Holocaust, remarks she later defended. “When you explain things in that extreme, it does get people’s attention to kind of say, ‘OK, maybe our freedoms are being taken away right now.’ So, sometimes you do have to use extremes to get attention. But I stand by it,” she told WJAR-TV Channel 10.

Both the Anti-Defamation League of New England and Dighton-Rehoboth schools Superintendent Anthony Azar strongly condemned her remarks.

The educators said they believe that mandatory Holocaust education will reduce such incidents.

Anyone whose skin color, beliefs or culture wasn’t part of the Aryan way, or who had some form of disability, was in danger, bringing the total number of targeted victims closer to 11 million,” Sheer said in an interview. “In our culturally diverse classroom, a seed of awareness was planted.

THOSE WHO DOUBT how much Holocaust awareness will be raised by the mandate to teach about the Holocaust and genocide in Rhode Island’s middle and secondary schools should familiarize themselves with the Holocaust Stamps Project.

Massachusetts had no such mandate in the 2008-09 school year, when the seed to start what became the Holocaust Stamps Project was germinated in the classroom of then-fifth-grade teacher Charlotte Sheer at the Foxboro Regional Charter School. (Massachusetts still lacks such a mandate. Two bills are awaiting action to move them toward a vote in the state Legislature.)

But the absence of a law requiring Holocaust education didn’t deter Sheer’s determination to enlighten her young students. After

They’re small and accessible.

The intent was to use stamps as a symbol for something of value being discarded, as millions of people’s lives were thrown away by the Nazis.

“By June that year [2009], they’d struggled to amass about 25,000 stamps. The children were just beginning to sense the enormity of the number 11 million.”

But that was just the start.

Sheer’s idea developed into the Holocaust Stamps Project, and became a regular component of the school’s Community Service Learning program.

Sheer said the project set a goal of collecting 11 million stamps to represent the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust as well as the 5 million people from 21 European countries who were slaughtered as part of the Nazis’ “Final Solution.”

The project took off, and reached heights unimagined in its early days. Sheer and a fellow teacher at the Foxboro school, Jamie Droste, who took over the project’s day-to-day chores after Sheer retired, were inundated with donations. Stamps poured in from across the globe, and the goal of collecting 11 million stamps, once considered daunting or even impossible, was reached before Yom Kippur in 2017.

The project also produced 18 collages made from the stamps, each depicting moments and people from the Holocaust. These, along with the stamps, have since found a permanent home at the American Philatelic Society’s center, in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.

The project sent the message that Holocaust education can serve as a powerful weapon against the rising tide of anti-Semitism and Holocaust-related ignorance, which has spawned such incidents as the use of the name of the notorious Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz as a term to call football plays – as the Duxbury High School team, in Massachusetts, had reportedly done for years until the story broke in the media in March, which led to the firing of its longtime football coach.

Holocaust education won’t end all ignorance, but in raising awareness about the genocide, it can help send a message that anti-Semitism and use of Nazi symbols is unacceptable.

In addition, a strong education about the Holocaust can lead to people reaching out to help in unexpected ways.

That happened to me several years ago, in 2015, when, after writing extensively about the stamps project, at The Sun Chronicle, of Attleboro, where I had worked since 1989, I got a call from a woman in Vermont. Alice Dulude said her husband Bill, a retired Attleboro firefighter and stamp collector, bought a huge box of stamps at a show, and they thought it’d make a good donation for the stamps project.

Not long after her call, her son, Bill Dulude Jr., dropped off the box to me, and I got it to Sheer, who was ecstatic with the more than 60,000 stamps.

That gift still resonates with me, because it shows what the power of education can do to make people understand the horror of the Holocaust.

Robert Isenberg: Documenting community life

R

obert Isenberg, 41, became multi­ media producer at the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island in May.

The Cranston resident’s work will appear across the platforms of Jewish Rhody Me-

dia, including in the paper and online. This profile is the first in a series of first-person essays written by staff members.

BY ROBERT ISENBERG IN THE SUMMER OF 1998, I decided I would make a movie. I had my parents’ old camcorder. My high school friends were willing, if reluctant, to help out.

We had plenty of places to shoot, as we lived among farms and orchards. True, rural Vermont wasn’t the ideal location to film a hardboiled mafia epic, but I like to think we did our best.

Nearly 25 years later, that ill-fated VHS tape has disappeared into a cardboard box, but my love for moving pictures is stronger than ever.

I returned to videography in 2010, when high-quality digital imaging became simple and affordable, and I hit the ground running. My first feature-length documentary, “The Trail,” was aired on WQED public television, and I was hooked.

My first love has always been writing, a medium that took me to the University of Pittsburgh; to the MFA program at Chatham University; to

alt-weeklies and glossy magazines across the country; and to Costa Rica, where I was a staff writer for The Tico Times.

For two decades, I’ve barely lifted my fingertips from the keyboard. This obsessive typing has resulted in a half-dozen books, 17 produced stage plays and thousands of articles, most recently for Providence Monthly.

Storytelling translates readily to film, and I love bolstering words with vivid imagery. I love the physical process of filmmaking, its three-dimensional nature. I love peering through the viewfinder, lining up a shot, and feeling breathless as the composition literally comes into focus. I love just letting a moment unfold. I love the CONTINUED ON PAGE 23

Israel at the Olympics Baseball run ends after 9th-inning loss to Dominican Republic (JTA) – Israel’s improbable quest for an Olympic medal in baseball ended Aug. 2 after the team featuring several former Major League ballplayers fell in a close match to the Dominican Republic.

Israel led 6-5 going into the ninth inning, but a home run followed by a string of singles propelled the Dominican Republic to a final score of 7-6.

The loss means that Israel will leave Tokyo with just one win out of five games, a poor showing in what many had hoped would be a breakout year for Israeli baseball.

The Associated Press had predicted that Team Israel, made up of both Israeli ballplayers and American

Jews, would win a bronze medal. Instead, the team lost to Korea and the United States in opening-round games, defeated Mexico in the first round of competition, and then lost to Korea again in round two before facing the Dominican Republic.

Judo team wins bronze medal in mixed team competition (JTA) – Israel’s top judokas failed to medal in their individual competitions, but as a team, they came together to take home a bronze medal.

“Everyone had a week that was very disappointing on a personal level, but something about this special day led to everyone giving a little more for the team, and that’s what made the difference,”

judoka Peter Paltchik said. “We were eulogized too soon.”

The new teams event, featuring judokas of both genders and three different weight classes for each gender, saw Israel upset the Russian Olympic Committee by a score of 4 to 1. The bronze medal is Israel’s sixth medal in judo – half of Israel’s total Olympic medals come in the sport, which they have long dominated.

“We were fighting for years, and this is one of the biggest dreams.

We just made history,” Timna Nelson Levy said after the victory.

“Judo is one of the most equal sports that there is today… Our sport is giving an example for the rest of the world to act. This competition is a representation of equality. I think it is amazing.”

Artem Dolgopyat wins gymnastics gold (JTA) – Israeli men’s gymnast Artem Dolgopyat took home the Olympic gold medal in floor exercise Aug. 1, giving Israel its second-ever gold in any Olympic event.

Born in Dnipro, Ukraine, Dolgopyat moved with his family to Israel when he was 12 and began training at Maccabi Tel Aviv, an acclaimed sports club that has produced multiple Olympians.

The Associated Press had predicted that he would win gold at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics (and that six other Israeli athletes or teams would medal during the games).

Until Sunday, the only gold medal ever won by an Israeli was Gal Fridman’s 2004 gold in windsurfing.

Finding the position of multimedia producer at the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island was a wondrous surprise. I’m a relative newcomer to Rhode Island, but the state quickly won me over, and I have a strong and lifelong relationship with the Jewish diaspora. Documenting the efforts and achievements of local people is a profound privilege, no matter the what or how.

One day, I’m filming a short documentary for the Jewish Alliance or JewishRhody.org. The next, I’m photographing a challah-baking session at J-Camp. Now, I’m writing a profile of myself for Jewish Rhode Island.

Meanwhile, this community has embraced

me from the moment I stepped through the doors of the Alliance’s Dwares Jewish Community Center, in Providence, and I wake up each morning eager to get to work.

Swiftly, the JCC has become a cornerstone of my Rhode Island life. I use the gym on a regular basis. My son attends summer camp at the JCC, and is learning to swim in its pool.

I have bonded with new friends through our shared appreciation for the Jewish Alliance and its many partner organizations. Working here has fueled hours of conversation with my neighbors, who first met on a kibbutz in Israel and have offered limitless insight into the Rhode Island Jewish community.

If that kid in 1998 could have known what he’d be filming in 2021, he’d be more excited than ever to pick up a camera.

PROVIDENCE – Israeli entrepreneur and AshdodTech co-founder Itamar Assaf met with Rhode Island officials and entrepreneurs on July 26 to tell them about the city of Ashdod and ask them to consider doing business with its start-ups, including AshdodTech.

“Rhode Island seems like a beautiful place. It’s a beautiful state,” Assaf said at the meeting, held at the RIHub. “Everything is so quiet and peaceful. This is what typically the people in Israel are looking for… I think there’s a great opportunity here.”

Assaf spoke in great detail about what Ashdod, which is the largest Israeli port and only 20 miles from Tel Aviv, can offer from a business standpoint.

“It’s similar to Rhode Island, in a nutshell,” Assaf said, adding that Ashdod is a leader in maritime technology.

“We’re talking about approximately 50 to 70 companies in the maritime industry,” he said about the start-ups that are looking to collaborate with a U.S. business. Their needs are in the areas of “renewable energy, compliance and security, safety management … all management,” he said.

Assaf said most of the start-ups eventually want to make it to the United States.

For the past decade, Assaf has held senior positions in the public and private sectors that focus on community engagement and initiating new partnerships.

His main job now is figuring out how to help Israeli companies find the best partner in the U.S. “The people in Israel, in general, are looking for something that we don’t have business-development services in,” Assaf said.

“Execution will be much easier for us if we find the partner or the business development to help.

“If AshdodTech doesn’t have a success story, we won’t continue,” he added.

“We just need to choose the right partner in order to do that.” AshdodTech is the largest technology community in Ashdod.

Rhode Island Israel Collaborative President and CEO Avi Nevel said his team has been working hard to grow the Israeli-Rhode Island connection. “We try to expose Rhode Island and its benefits,” he said.

Expert advises the Jewish community on building ‘a culture of conscious security’

BY FRAN OSTENDORF Safety and security have always been concerns in the Jewish community and its organizations. With anti-Semitism and acts of hate and violence increasing in the U.S. and around the world today, the concern has never been greater.

Security expert Brad Orsini, of the Secure Community Network (SCN), travels the country to bring his years of expertise to Jewish communities. He was in Providence for several days during the week of July 19, presenting programs and active-shooter workshops for the community, Jewish organizations and law enforcement.

“Part of my role is to help communities with any of their security needs,” he said. “The goal is to bring awareness on the threat in the community,

“In order to get Rhode Island on the map more quickly. We want to … expand opportunity for all countries out there,” said RIHub Managing Director Annette Tonti.

“I firmly have a personal belief that if we can bring these high-tech people here, let them land here, expand here, it helps our talent pool, it helps our DNA,” she said.

Among its services, RIHub offers a bridge program to businesses outside the U.S. that includes six months of administrative assistance.

Jeanne Boyle, the director of commerce for the city of Pawtucket, also attended the meeting. She said she is optimistic about opportunities for Israeli companies to connect with small businesses in Rhode Island.

“Because of all the older mill space that we have, we do have a lot of entrepreneurs who have occupied that space, a lot of them are sort of small tech,” Boyle said.

Orsini is the senior national security adviser for SCN, the official safety and security organization for the Jewish community in North America. It was formed in 2004 under the auspices of The Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

From January 2017 to January 2020, Orsini was the first director of security for the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. Before that, he served as a special agent for the FBI from 1988 to 2016.

In an interview with Jewish Rhode Island, Orsini said the security situation in the Jewish world is constantly evolving.

“There are opportunities for us to connect some of those businesses … there’s a cybersecurity company that has been looking for some room to grow.”

Nevel said that it is meetings such as this one that will help bring more Israeli businesses to Rhode Island.

In fact, RIIC is already helping a few Israeli companies connect with bigger local companies. For example, RIIC connected Rhode Island Hospital with an Israeli company that develops games geared toward people who have autism. Through the BIRD Foundation, which supports high-tech industries that mutually benefit the U.S. and Israel, RIIC was able to get the company a $1 million grant.

“We are trying to figure out how much more is to come, “ Nevel said. “I say to my board, ‘It's not what we do, it’s what happens because of us.’”

“We’ve seen a dramatic increase in threats to our community since 2017, starting with the bomb threats. Once Charlottesville happened, we saw another dramatic increase. So if you take Pittsburgh, Poway, Jersey City and Muncie in a 14-month period, we had violent attacks that killed members of our community.

We’d never seen that before.”

He added, “What we see now, we see active shooters on the rise, not just in the Jewish community.”

When Orsini talks about security, he emphasizes training and preparation. The SCN works with Jewish communities on both. And he said he believes community members should embrace both.

“One of the goals of every Federation is to build a vibrant Jewish community,

a resilient, safe community, and empower our community to not be afraid. We want our community all trained, all prepared. Awareness is power and leads to resilience.

Awareness reduces anxiety,” he said.

The importance of training was made clear by the tragedy at Tree of Life synagogue, in Pittsburgh, in 2018. Orsini was the security director at the Pittsburgh Federation at the time, and firmly believes, “Training works. Training matters. The only thing we have under our control is preparedness.” He said that people survived because they were trained.

Active-shooter training absolutely helps, he said, adding that it should be offered two or three times a year because it’s a “perishable” skill.

Orsini said since we can’t read people’s minds and we don’t have control over what people think or do, “The best tool we have is to report every sign of hate or suspicious activity … if you see or hear something, report it.”

Locally, there are a number of options for reporting, including law enforcement and a community hate tracker (www.jewishallianceri.org/ report-it).

“We want to build a community that’s proud to be Jewish, that’s not afraid to identify as Jews. Education and awareness will diminish the anxiety of the community,” Orsini said.

Online course to explore Jewish life in Eastern Europe THIS FALL, the R.I. Delve Deeper Jewish adult-education program is offering a 10-week online course, “Creativity and Resilience: Jewish Life in Eastern Europe 1550-2020,” taught

by Natan M. Meir, the Lorry I. Lokey Professor of Judaic Studies at Portland State University.

For many centuries, Eastern Europe was one of the great centers of Jewish civilization. The course will explore the society that Jews created in the east European borderlands, a world unto itself but also closely interlinked with the surrounding Slavic and Christian milieu.

Drawing on key documents from the world of Polish and Russian Jews, Meir will examine central phenomena, such as the shtetl; the Hasidic movement; the emergence of modern Yiddish and Hebrew literature; the rise of modern Jewish political movements, such as Zionism and Bundism; the creation of Soviet Jewry;

and the Holocaust in Eastern Europe.

The program will also touch on outcasts of the Jewish community, including beggars and people with disabilities, which is the subject of a recent book by Professor Meir.

Meir is a scholar of Jewish social, cultural and religious history who speaks eight languages, leads Jewish heritage tours in Ukraine, Poland and the Baltics, consults for Moscow’s Jewish Museum, and is the author of two books: “Kiev, Jewish Metropolis: A History, 1859-1914” and “Stepchildren of the Shtetl: The Destitute, Disabled, and Mad of Jewish Eastern Europe, 1800-1939.”

Meir is also the co-editor of “Anti-Jewish Violence: Rethinking the Pogrom in East European History.”

GOP senators want to keep Trump mandate WASHINGTON (JTA) – Seven Republican senators are backing a bill that would enshrine as law one of former President Donald Trump’s final orders – requiring products from the portion of the West Bank controlled entirely by Israel to be labeled as originating in Israel.

The Anti-BDS Labeling Act introduced this week

by Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., refers to the movement to boycott, divest from and sanction Israel.

It comes on the heels of the controversy surrounding ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s recent decision to pull its products out of the West Bank. Republican lawmakers, however, have been talking about enacting the Trump order since Dec. 23, when the lame-duck president issued the measure less than a month before leaving office.

Biden has not rescinded the order, which applies to goods manufactured in Area C, which is under Israeli control. Former Israeli

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had contemplated annexing the area.

The bill has no chance of passage in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Area C is where Jewish settlements are concentrated, although it also includes a Palestinian population.

Also in the West Bank are the much smaller Area A, which is under total Palestinian Authority control, and Area B under joint Israel-P.A. control. Under Trump’s order, products from those areas are labeled as coming from the West Bank.

In addition to Cotton, the bill is being backed

by Marco Rubio and Rick Scott of Florida; Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty of Tennessee; Ted Cruz of Texas; and John Boozman of Arkansas.

BDS generally refers to boycotts of all of Israel, not just of settlement goods. In announcing its new policy, Ben & Jerry’s said it did not adhere to the tenets of BDS.

“It feels like a great honor to me,” she added.

“Democracy is a messy business and I’d like to say that I’ll never make a mistake again [...] but what I appreciate is that there is a system that allows us to catch our mistakes…”

The Jewish Alliance shared the following statement in response to the Committee vote: “While we would have liked to see the school committee avoid starting school on Rosh Hashanah altogether – since this still forces some students and teachers to choose between observance and the first day – we believe this is better than keeping the calendar as it was. We look forward to continuing to work with education leaders across our state to ensure learning environments are equitable and free of discrimination for all students, families, and educators.”

Say goodbye – and hello! – to our shlichim

PROVIDENCE – The Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island is inviting the community to say farewell to our outgoing Israeli shlichah (emissary), and to welcome our incoming shaliach, at a party on Aug. 25.

Shlichah Or Cohen is returning to Israel after two years of commitment and service to our community, and while her work coincided with the pandemic, it did not stop her from having a great impact. Cohen conducted many virtual and in-person programs for adults, as well as children’s programs for schools and the entire community Amit Oren online.

Or Cohen Pre-pandemic, Isaac Herzog, then chairman of the Jewish Agency, promised Cohen he would visit Rhode Island, and he kept his promise, visiting Touro Synagogue and

meeting with Jewish Alliance leaders. Herzog is now the president of Israel.

For her local Zoom programs, Cohen brought in many Israeli guest presenters, who did everything from conducting an Israeli whiskey-tasting to telling the background stories behind some films on Netflix and HBO Max. She also created Israel activity boxes that served as models for other communities where people were isolating at home.

The Alliance extends its sincere thanks to Cohen for all she has taught us.

Amit Moshe Oren, 24, of Rishon LeZion, Israel, will become our community shaliach at the end of August. In addition to training for his new role, he has spent the summer working with a NFTY (Reform Jewish Youth Movement) group traveling in Israel. He previously spent two summers working at URJ Camp Newman, in California.

Oren has also volunteered with the elderly and with children in at-risk neighborhoods.

In addition to being a basketball coach and a combat medic, Oren is a published comics writer, letterer and short story author. He enjoys making music and watching movies, and has also done some acting.

The farewell party for Cohen, and the welcome for Oren, will be held from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25, at the back of the Alliance’s Dwares Jewish Community Center, 401 Elmgrove Ave., Providence.

From a collection of small items, European Jewish identity emerges

BY MICHAEL SCHEMAILLE FOR CUMBERLAND RESIDENT Stuart Freiman, collecting Judaica is both a passion and a deeply personal pursuit. His books of Jewish ephemera – those not-meant-to-bekept items such as official forms, letters and stamps – form a visual time capsule that shines a light on Jewish identity in Europe during the first half of the 20th century.

Freiman, 61, says it all started with stamps.

“My dad was a stamp collector, and I was a stamp collector as a child. I didn’t do anything with it for a very long time, and then my daughter was born, and as she got older, we were looking for something to do together. Stamp collecting was kind of a thing that we did together. That’s kind of where it started from,” he said.

Freiman’s specific interest in period-specific Jewish ephemera was piqued in 1998, when he was searching eBay for Israeli stamps, and came across a Nazi-stamped registration form filled out by a Polish Jew. “I had no idea that stuff like this was available for sale,” he said. “I bought it. I just had to have it, and I was like, ‘What am I going to do with this?’ I didn’t tell anybody about it for six months.” But, he added, “You start really thinking about the person who had to stand there and fill this out and register, and how scared they were, and not knowing what their life was going to be like.”

Freiman said that the registration form “started me, and from there I ended up finding all of this material on eBay and in other places.”

Part of his collection is a vast amount of mail, which Freiman says he began collecting due to his background in philately.

“It started with the stamps, but I’m really fascinated with the propaganda. I think it’s one of the single biggest enemies of the Jews during that era … it’s so extensive and in-your-face.”

In 2009, Freiman chose items from his collection for display at the Cumberland Public Library.

“It was such a risky, crazy thing.

If I’d thought about doing it, I probably wouldn’t have, but it was just one of those things,” he said.

“It took me a while to synthesize it, but I pursued the thread of Jewish identity in Europe in the 20th century, with the idea that I wasn’t just collecting Holocaust materials – I was collecting Judaic material

in Europe. A lot of it is positive.

There’s a whole life that existed that you can see in the material, and then it starts to get very negative.

“You can see where the Germans came in, and you can see all of the stuff that they started to do. It starts showing up in the postal material and the documents, and there was a lot of anti-Semitic propaganda.

You can see this flow of identity from a positive, flourishing Jewish life to a lot of people dying because they were Jewish.”

As a case in point, Freiman spoke about his exhibition souvenir from the 1940 propaganda film “Der Evige Jude (The Wandering Jew),” saying, “Hitler needed an excuse to do what he wanted to do, and he put together this exhibit. It showed throughout Europe, in various museums and exhibition halls, and it brought people in from all walks of life. It was part of the propaganda machine.”

Freiman also spoke about how his collection created an opportunity for him to discuss his family background with his mother.

“My mother was a Holocaust survivor,” he said. “She came through one of the more unusual paths. Her background was that she was in the eastern part of Poland when the Soviets invaded. [Her family] would not give in to becoming Soviet citizens, and they were sent to Siberia. Some set of Polish Jews – the number’s supposed to be around 100,000, it’s not a gigantic number – survived the war because they ended up in Soviet labor camps as opposed to concentration camps.”

Among the items in Freiman’s collection is a ship’s manifest from the vessel that brought his mother to the United States from Le Havre, France, in 1952.

“The point of all of this is evidence. Every single one of these pieces tells a story, and there’s a lot here,” he said.

Freiman works for the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency. He is a member of Congregation Agudas Achim, where he was the president from 2011 to 2015, and he previously taught eighth-graders at Temple Chayai Shalom, in Easton, Massachusetts.

Freiman and his wife, Judy, who celebrated their 36th anniversary in early June, have lived in Rhode Island since 2004. They have two adult children, Danielle and Adam.

Alliance’s endowment increases by 36%

BY SARA MASRI THE JEWISH FEDERATION FOUNDATION, the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island’s endowment, had a “banner year,” with the value of the endowment increasing 36%, from nearly $54 million to $73.4 million, for the year ending May 31, 2021.

“It has been a banner year for the JFF, and we are so pleased that community members invested with us have seen such a great return on their investments,” said Mitzi Berkelhammer, JFF chair.

Three years ago, the Jewish Alliance made the decision to move the JFF funds to the Rhode Island Foundation.

Now the Alliance’s donors get all the advantages of the RIF’s investment portfolio while remaining dedicated to the Jewish community.

“The Jewish Federation Foundation of Rhode Island has been a great partner.

As part of the Rhode Island Foundation family, JFF and its donors benefit from our $1.3 billion endowment, with its average annualized return of 7.7% over the last 20 years,” said Daniel Kertzner, senior philanthropic adviser at the RIF and liaison to the JFF. “JFF donor-advised and endowed funds provide an excellent opportunity for individuals to maximize their charitable giving and leave a legacy for the community.”

One of the ways JFF donors are giving back to the community is through donor-advised funds. JFF DAFs are currently worth about $28.8 million and act as philanthropic bank accounts. After establishing a DAF with an initial gift of $2,500 or more, donors can use these funds to

WASHINGTON (JTA) – The $1 trillion infrastructure funding bill that is seen as a rare bipartisan breakthrough includes funding for energy efficiency measures at religious institutions, a measure long sought by Orthodox Jewish groups.

The Nonprofit Energy Efficiency Act wrapped into the bill that Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announced on Aug. 1 would include $50 million for grants of up to $200,000 each to improve infrastructure at religious institutions and other nonprofits, as well as pay for items like renewable energy generators and heaters, according to a release by the Orthodox Union, which for years has led lobbying for such a measure.

The language in the bill is based on the nonprofit security grant program

launched in the mid-2000s at the behest of Jewish organizations seeking increased security following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

Congress now allocates $180 million in nonprofit security grants and a number of states have launched their own such funding.

“Our nation’s synagogues, churches, day schools and many other nonprofits have badly needed to update their energy infrastructure but haven’t had the funds to do so,” Nathan Diament, the Orthodox Union’s Washington director, said in the release.

The infrastructure bill, the subject of months of negotiations, could still be amended on its way to passage by the Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.

OBITUARIES Elsbeth Adler, 96 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Elsbeth (Gottschalk) Adler, of Providence, passed away July 6 at The Miriam Hospital. She was the wife of the late Carl Adler. Born in Aachen, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Otto and Margaret (Franken) Gottschalk.

Elsbeth worked at Adler’s Hardware on Wickenden Street in Providence for many years before retiring.

A lifetime member of Hadassah Rhode Island, she was also a member of the Temple Torat Yisrael Sisterhood and Temple Emanu-El. She volunteered at The Miriam Hospital and the Jewish Community Center. An avid gardener, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, and she especially loved taking her granddaughters away every Sunday on special trips. Having unconditional love for everyone around her, Elsbeth was a well-known local icon, and she will be greatly missed by all.

She is survived by her son Marc Adler and his wife Janice, of Providence; two grandchildren, Rachel Adler, of Malden, Massachusetts, and Jacqueline Nolis and her partner, Heather, of Seattle, Washington; and one great-grandson, Amber Nolis.

Myra Alexander, 80 FOXBORO, MASS. – Myra Alexander of Foxboro, formerly of Cranston, died July 30 at home.

Born in Bronx, New York, she grew up in Elmont, Long Island. Myra, was the daughter of the late Dave and Etta (Chamlin) Young and sister of the late Michael Young.

Myra was the wife of David Alexander, with whom she shared over 60 years of marriage. She was the mother of Janet Alexander, Marcy Harris and Gary Alexander.

She was the grandmother of Ike, Ethan, Libby, Dylan and Gideon (G.G.). She also leaves behind her canine companion, Bianca.

Myra received a bachelor’s degree in education from Queens College and enjoyed her years teaching in elementary school in Connecticut. After raising her children, she continued her education and earned a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from Assumption College. She was a social worker for the state of Rhode Island for 20 years.

Myra deeply loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them, playing games and teaching them how to bake chocolate chip cookies. She was an avid reader who was passionate about the no-kill animal rescue movement. She enjoyed traveling.

Myra fought lung cancer for more than 14 years, before succumbing to the disease. Her family is most grateful to the staff at Dana Farber Cancer Center, especially the compassion and care of Myra's oncologist Dr. Michael Rabin. Her family is also grateful to the staff at Old Colony Hospice, especially her nurse Jess and personal attendant Erica.

Dr. Joseph Blumen, 88 NEWPORT, R.I. – Dr. Joseph Blumen, of Newport, passed on July 25 at the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol.

Joseph was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1933, to Dora and Elias Blumen.

Along with older brothers Louis and David, the family moved to Newport soon afterward. Dora and Elias owned and operated the Municipal Market, a small grocery store at the corner of Bowery and Spring streets.

One of Joe's earliest memories was the way the store's plate glass window flexed and bowed during the Hurricane of 1938.

Dr. Blumen was a graduate of Rogers High School, Brown University and Tufts University School of Medicine. In 1965, he enlisted as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and served as Chief of General Surgery at the 67th Evac Hospital, Qui Nhon, Vietnam, and later on the surgical staff at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.

In 1967, Joseph returned to Newport to practice as a general surgeon and primary care physician and to raise a family with Dale, his wife and partner of 58 years.

Dr. Blumen was an active member of the community.

He was a Master Mason and member of St. Paul's Lodge No.14 for more than 50 years.

Joseph was a long-serving member of the Planning Board for the City of Newport and a trustee of the Seamen's Church Institute.

He also established the Dora and Elias Blumen Collection for the Study of Holocaust Literature at Salve Regina University.

Joseph considered his family to be the most important part of his life. He is survived by his wife, Dale, his children Ethan (Tracy) of Sharon, Massachusetts, Rebecca of Newport, Jonathan (Lisa) of Rutland, Massachusetts, and Joshua (Jill) of Sharon, and his grandchildren Eli, Mira, Alexander, Maxwell, Liliana and Violet.

Paula Cohen, 78 LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – Paula S. Cohen passed away July 5 at Spring Valley Hospital. She was the wife of Richard Cohen for 57 years.

Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Rose (Shapiro) Shore, she had lived most recently in Las Vegas, previously living in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Merrimack, New Hampshire. She was a longtime resident of Cranston, where she and her husband Richard H. Cohen raised their five children.

Paula attended Bryant University. For many years, she worked alongside her husband for Richard H. Cohen Associates, importing seasonal giftware. Paula loved to sing and was a former member of the Temple Emanu-El choir. Her pride and joy was her family, and she cherished the time spent with them. She enjoyed cooking family dinners, needlepoint, making everyone laugh and watching her family grow.

Paula was the mother of David Cohen (Michelle), of Las Vegas; Miriam Cohen (Rob Robinson), of Wakefield; Robert Cohen (Melissa), of Berlin, Connecticut; Jonathan Cohen, of Marina del Rey, California; and Cara Hiller (Michael) of Katonah, New York. She was the sister of Myrna Aronson (Edward), of Providence, and she was a grandmother of Alexandra, Jacob, Jared, Rachel, Joshua, Eli, Jack and Max. Charles Dress, 83 WARWICK, R.I. – Charles H. Dress passed away on Aug. 3 at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center.

He was the beloved husband of Donna (Poli) Dress for 44 years.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Jacob and Hester (Schwartz) Dress, he had lived in Warwick for 37

years. He was a graduate of URI, Class of ’60. Charles was the director of Human Resources for Robbins Co. in Attleboro, retiring in 2000.

He was a member of AARP and received their Volunteer of the Year Award in 2016.

Charles was an avid tennis player and a member and volunteer with USTA and RI Mentoring Program.

He was the devoted father of Carl Dress and his wife, Nicole, of Narberth, Pennsylvania, Ken Dress and his partner, Diane Evans, of Canton, Georgia, Harold Cahoon and his wife, Meredith, of Warwick, Pam Poli and her husband, Fred Mayerhoff, of Tiverton and Chris Cahoon and his partner, Cindy Desisto, of North Attleboro. Mark Gitlin, 65 BARRINGTON, R.I. – Mark I. Gitlin, of Barrington, passed away July 24 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Marilynn (Stiman) Gitlin to whom he was married for 36 years.

Mark was a devoted father to his children Kara, Ethan and Josie. He is survived by his mother, Goldie Gitlin, and his sisters Rebecca Eisenberg and Barbara Green.

Mark worked at Mid City Scrap in Westport, Massachusetts, for 50 years. He was a mentor and trusted adviser to many. A man of honor and integrity, Mark devoted his life to growing the family business and ensuring its longevity beyond him.

Mark’s motto in life was to live life well and without regrets. He was an avid golfer, bike rider and body surfer. He especially enjoyed these activities with his family and friends. He adored and was adored by his family.

David Greenberg, 85 MALIBU, CALIF. – David H. Greenberg of Malibu passed away on June 9. David was born on Dec. 28, 1935, in Providence to first-generation Jewish immigrants Morris and Charlotte Greenberg.

David was a well-respected personal injury and employment law trial attorney for over 55 years, representing primarily minority and socio-economically challenged plaintiffs and practiced law at his firm Greenberg & Ruby until his passing. David was an entrepreneur who enjoyed many business adventures including many years in commercial real estate, starting an apartment painting and repair service called One Call Apartment Service, operating a computer processing business and inventing a new sport called Cycle Soccer Polo. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958-60.

In 2017, David wrote his autobiography and memoirs, a novel and a set of life musings for his children and grandchildren. David’s motto in life, and the message he strove to teach his children and grandchildren, was, “No matter how many times you try and fail, keep fighting and keep believing in yourself.”

David was preceded in death by his daughter Dove Greenberg. He is survived by his wife, Diane Greenberg, and daughters Julie Greenberg and Tricia Schoenbaum; son-in-law Daniel Schoenbaum; four grandchildren, Cody Rudman, Wyatt Rudman, Emma Schoenbaum and Noah Schoenbaum; as well as his brother Jerald Greenberg and sister Rosalie Goldman.

Sally Greenberg, 94 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sally M. Greenberg died July 23 at Bethany Home, Providence.

She was the wife of the late Arthur H. Greenberg to whom she was married for 52 years. Born in Evanston, Illinois, a daughter of the late Leo and Mildred (Rittenberg) Fogel. She had lived in Providence for over 75 years. She was a salesperson for T.W. Rounds Co., retiring in 2001.

Sally attended University of Wisconsin, volunteered at the Miriam and Butler Hospital gift shops, and was a member of Hadassah.

She was the mother of Robert J. Greenberg and his wife, Sheryl, of Tucson, Arizona; Susan G. Gregerman

and her husband, Abbott, of Jamestown; and Marilyn Spirito and her husband, Andrew, of North Providence. She was the sister of the late Arthur Fogel. She was the sister-in-law of the late Paul Greenberg and his surviving wife, Marcia, of Jamestown.

Irene Horowitz, 99 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Irene Horowitz died July 1 at Wingate Residences.

She was the wife of the late Jerome Horowitz. Born in San Antonio, Texas, and raised in New York City, a daughter of the late Samuel and Sophie (Pinelis) Garber, she was a longtime resident of Providence. Irene was an avid bridge and canasta player, and a member of the RI Bridge Club. She enjoyed traveling the world with Jerry and sharing her experiences while entertaining family and friends.

She was the mother of Steven Horowitz and his wife, Cynthia, of Narragansett; Robin Bautista and her partner, Robert, of Cumberland; and the late Sidney Horowitz and his surviving wife, Carol, of Deltona, Florida. She was the sister of the late Louis Garber, Tex Fein and Sidney Garber. She was the grandmother of Sharon (Michael), Jeremy (Megan), Jaime, Rachel (Chris), Lindsay (Bobby), Kaile and the late Jeffrey (Tammy). She was the great-grandmother of 10 and great-great-grandmother of one.

Leonard Kaplan, 91 ALPHARETTA, GA. – Leonard “Low Price Lenny” Kaplan, died on Aug. 1 in Alpharetta.

Lenny was born on May 2, 1930, in Providence to Abraham and Fannie Kaplan.

He graduated from Hope High School and served as a Supply Sergeant in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Okinawa Japan from 1950-1952. Lenny

returned to Rhode Island and opened his first Army/ Navy store called the “Gob Shops” in 1954 in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lenny opened additional locations throughout the Southcoast region.

Lenny was a very active civic leader and his volunteerism and leadership roles were numerous for over 40 years. Probably the nonprofit closest to Len’s heart was his beloved Ms. Senior Sweetheart Pageant of America/ International, which he originated in 1978. In 2012, the organization was showcased in a documentary movie.

The touching film, called “Pretty Old the Movie” truly exposes the heart of the real Lenny Kaplan and four of the women who were involved in the pageant.

Perhaps the greatest honor that Len has received for his civic volunteerism was having the Walking Bridge at Battleship Cove in Fall River named the “Leonard Low Price Lenny Kaplan” Bridge in 2018.

In his later years, Lenny moved to Johns Creek, Georgia, and lived with his “kids,” his son Alan and his wife, Susan, at their home.

He lived his final two years at Tapestry House Assisted Living, Alpharetta, where his personality was contagious and he treated everyone as if they were a part of his family.

Lenny is survived by his son, Alan and his wife, Susan, and his three grandchildren, David, Stephen and Rachel (husband Matt), as well as his great-grandson, Kiaan. He is also survived by his daughter Susan Robyn and his beloved sister Miriam Snell as well as nephews, nieces, cousins and extended family. He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Beverly, who died in January 2015.

Bernice Kaufman, 94 CHEVY CHASE, MD – Bernice R. Kaufman died July 22 at her home in Chevy Chase, where she had resided for the past 11 years. She was the wife of the late Eli Kaufman, to whom she was married for more than 50 years, the mother of the late Joel Kaufman and mother-

in-law to his surviving wife, Debra Tropp, of Kensington, Maryland, and the sister of Seymour Hornstein (Ethel) of North Providence and the late Abner and Edmund Hornstein and Evelyn Bruch.

Born and raised on the East Side of Providence, a daughter of the late Samuel and Leah (Silverman) Hornstein, she briefly lived in South Providence before spending most of her adult life in Warwick. She was a bookkeeper for multiple small jewelry companies in the Providence area for several decades, and kept meticulous records throughout her life, even volunteering in her 90s to keep accounts for a small retail establishment in her independent living facility.

Above all, she was fiercely proud and committed to her family members, making exceptional personal sacrifices to ensure that they received proper care in their time of need. She will be sorely missed by her numerous family members and friends, including many of her fellow residents at the Five Star independent living facility in Chevy Chase where she was adored for her practical outlook and candid sense of humor.

Marsha Kirshenbaum, 77 CRANSTON, R.I. – Marsha D. (Rosenfeld) Kirshenbaum, of Cranston, passed away on July 31, surrounded by family. She was the wife of Allen M. Kirshenbaum, with whom she shared (in her own words), “the best 57 years of a marriage one could have.”

Marsha is also survived by her three children, Evan M. Kirshenbaum and his wife Lisa, Elana H. Kirshenbaum, and Loren A. Sidman and her husband James. She was also the grandmother to five grandchildren, Nathan B. Kirshenbaum, Sarah E. Sidman, Lucy A. Kirshenbaum, Eden J. Sidman, and Nadiya C. Kirshenbaum. She was the sister of the late Donald A. Rosenfeld of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Born in Providence, to the late Nathan and Sarah (Sally) Rosenfeld on March 8, 1944, Marsha was a graduate of Hope High School and Simmons College, where

she received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and graduated magna cum laude.

She was manager of Corporate Actuarial Services at General Electric Corporation and taught two sections of the national actuarial exam.

Marsha was also Vice President of Administration at Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare, and eventually, President of MK Consultants, her own consulting firm.

In addition to her remarkable dedication to her professional career, Marsha was highly committed to giving back to her community by volunteering on numerous boards and committees.

At Simmons College, she served as the president of the Alumnae Executive Board, vice president of the Executive Board, director at large for the Grant Review Committee, and was a member of the Career Advisory Board and Leadership Council. At the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island, Marsha served as a board member on the Governance Committee, Finance Committee and Grant Review Committee. Marsha remained committed to Hope High School and served as a board member of Hope High School Dollars for Scholars, was a Finance Committee member, and served as co-chair of the Scholarship Committee. Marsha was a member of the Blue Cross Corporation.

David M. Korn, 86 CRANSTON, R.I. – David M. Korn died July 25 at home. He was the husband of Brenda (Alberts) Korn for 63 years. Born in Providence to the late Lewis and Fannie (Brodsky) Korn, he lived in Cranston for the past 13 years, and prior to that in Providence and Pawtucket.

He was the owner of Safeway Electric Motor Company in Providence.

David was an Army veteran.

Ruth Logowitz, 94 PALM BEACH, FLA. – Ruth (Cornell) Weiner Logowitz, of Palm Beach, died July 13.

Born Aug. 23, 1926, in Fall River, Massachusetts a daughter of Herman and Florence Cornell. She was married to Irving Weiner (1948-d.1976) and Kenneth Logowitz (1986-d.1996). She was the mother of Betsy McNeil (Andrew) and the late Mark Steven Weiner (Susan). She was the sister of Alan Cornell and Lois Firestone. She was the grandmother of Catherine (Brian) Bunnin, Mark Steven Weiner Jr., Zoe Weiner, Richard Weiner, Donald McNeil and Ian McNeil. She was the great-grandmother of Maxwell Bunnin and Bennett Bunnin.

Ruth raised her family in Providence. In addition to being a devoted mother, wife, and daughter, Ruth held a variety of positions that enriched the lives of others. She was a full-time volunteer at Providence

City Hall, a member of the Governor's Commission on Women, a member of the Jewish Federation for career women, a member of the Turks Head Club, a member of the Breakers Palm Beach, a member of Chabad of South Palm Beach, and she sat on the board for Muscular Dystrophy research. She was the volunteer coordinator for the state of Rhode Island, which included the establishment of the Friendly Visitor program. Ruth introduced the first Head Start program to Rhode Island. She was honored by the Rhode Island Spanish community when she was chosen the American mother of the year.

After the death of her second husband, Ruth became a world traveler and saw places she had always dreamed of visiting.

Ruth was an avid reader and was sharp as a tack. She was a lifelong Democrat and always had an opinion about the politics of the day. She had a great sense of humor and an incredible memory for people and their stories, always inquiring about the welfare of others.

The family extends their gratitude to Diane Salazar, whose devotion and care enhanced Ruth’s well-being and enriched her life in her last years in Palm Beach.

Troy Marzetta, 49

LINCOLN, R.I. – Troy David Marzetta, 49, of Lincoln, passed away unexpectedly on June 22.

He was the husband of Amy (Pristawa) Marzetta and father to Abigail and Nicholas Marzetta. Born April 11, 1972, son of Rhonda (Cantoff) Marzetta of East Providence and Alfred Marzetta of Blackstone, Massachusetts.

Troy was regional manager of Farmland Food for New England before becoming vice president of sales for 12 years for the Affinity Group in the New England area.

Troy especially enjoyed landscaping and beautifying his yard with unique plants and trees, fishing, vacations and travel, carpentry, and all sports, especially his fantasy football league. With his infectious smile and his inviting personality, it’s no

wonder that his most precious moments were spending time with his family and bringing his friends together for many gatherings and special events.

He served his country in the U.S. Army Military Police during the Persian Gulf War. In 1994 he was assigned to the Dutch detachment FMPO at south camp in the Sinai Peninsula.

He was a 1998 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He was a member of the fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon and served as house father and made many lifelong friends.

Troy spent more than 10 enjoyable summers at Camp JORI in Wakefield as a camper, kitchen boy, and eventually becoming a camp counselor. His children are now following in his footsteps and love spending their summer at Camp JORI. Troy is survived by his brother Jon Marzetta and his wife Debra of Rumford, stepmother Patricia Marzetta of Blackstone, two stepsisters, Laurie Peloquin of Millville, Massachusetts, and Cheryl Geoffroy of Cumberland. He was the son-in-law of Henry and Karen Pristawa of Woonsocket, and he had several nieces and nephews.

William Paisner, 78 TEMECULA, CALIF. – William Lee “Bill” Paisner died on July 8 with his daughter Desiree by his side. A longtime resident of Temecula, Bill grew up in Cranston, graduating from Cranston East High School. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University with majors in engineering and applied physics and a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Southern California. In 1979, he designed what at the time was the fastest graphics computer in the world.

His love of music, however – which had been with him since he first learned the piano and then played the clarinet in Rhode Island’s youth orchestra and for musicals while at Harvard – beckoned.

He was a charter member of the Pacific Chorale, touring with them for more

than 20 years nationally and worldwide. He taught voice, piano and sight-reading.

He was the Vocal Director for the Temecula Valley Players and the Fine Arts Network in a variety of musicals and an assistant director and chorus master for the Inland Valley Opera. His memberships included the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and Mensa. He also volunteered at the Temecula Children’s Museum and was a charter member of the board of the Temecula Theatre Foundation.

At 55, Bill earned another degree – this time in choral direction, from California State University, Fullerton.

He first founded the Temecula Vintage Singers, and, in 2000, he created the Southwest Women’s Chorus, which he nurtured and directed for the next 21 years.

Bill is survived by his daughter Desiree Paisner, siblings James M. and Susan R. Paisner, plus two generations of nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a celebration of his life this Fall in Temecula. In the meanwhile, they suggest that you sing a song to a loved one in Bill’s honor.

Peter Rosedale, 90 WARWICK, R.I. – Peter K. Rosedale, of Warwick, died on July 14 (his 90th birthday).

He leaves his wife of 52 years, Beverly (Costantino) Rosedale. Born as Klaus Rosenthal in 1931 in Essen, Germany, he was the son of Otto and Martha Rosedale.

Peter arrived in the U.S. with his parents on March 13, 1939, at the height of the Great Depression and just before World War II. Although only 7 years old in 1938, he always had a vivid recollection of Kristallnacht, seeing his synagogue set on fire and early dismissal from his Jewish school because of a rumor of a possible bombing.

He graduated from Hope High School. He graduated from Boston University (College of General Education and the School of Law). After serving in the U.S. Army, he practiced law in Providence for over 40 years and was an active arbitrator in the public sector for the Ameri-

Before and after retirement, he was active as a marriage officiant and performed thousands of civil wedding ceremonies.

Peter served as judge of the Providence Municipal Court, chairman of The R.I. Bar Association District Court Bench/Bar committee, chairman of the Board of the former Cranston General Hospital, chairman of the Warwick Board of Canvassers, Board member of the former Temple Beth Israel and President of the former Roger Williams Lodge of B’nai B’rith. He was the only Rhode Islander ever elected as national president of the then junior order of B’nai B’rith, known as the AZA. He was a member of the Aurora Civic Association.

In addition to his wife, Peter is survived by his five children, Steven and Aileen (late) of Connecticut; Michael of Massachusetts; Nancy and her fiancé, Robson De Oliveria, of Massachusetts; Paul of North Kingstown; and Tom and his wife, Tiffany, of Massachusetts. Peter is also survived by his grandchildren, William, Elora, Brooke, Lily

and Avery. He also leaves his beloved Siamese cats, Princess and Mitzie.

Leonard Rotenberg, 97 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Leonard A. Rotenberg passed July 17 at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center. He was the husband of Ruth (Limer) Rotenberg for 75 years. He was a son of the late Adolph and Jennie (Pepper) Rotenberg, stepson of George Solinger and was a lifelong resident of Providence.

He was the owner of Reliable Gold Ltd. in Providence for 58 years, retiring in 2004.

Leonard was a graduate of Hope High School, Class of ’43, and attended RI School of Design. He was a WWII Army Veteran, serving in the European Theater. Leonard was a longtime member of Temple Emanu-El. He was the father of Rena Abeles of Providence and Dr. Fred Rotenberg (Sally)

Sylvia Safferson, 95 MARLBOROUGH, MA – Sylvia Safferson died on July 29 at New Horizons.

She was the wife of the late Nathan Safferson for over 55 years. Born in Boston, the daughter of the late Aaron and Ida (Davis) Barr, she moved to Warwick after getting married, and then resided in Marlborough for the past six years.

She was a coordinator and secretary at Bradley Hospi-

tal. Sylvia was a member of Temple Torat Yisrael and its sisterhood for 55 years. She volunteered at Hasbro Children’s Hospital where she read to young patients. She also delivered gifts for the Jewish Seniors Agency. She loved to participate in a wide variety of activities, including tap dancing, singing, reading, arts and crafts, and staying up to date on current events.

She was the mother of Paul Safferson and his wife, Rivka, of Oakton, Virginia, and Rona Stein and her husband, Michael, of Framingham, Massachusetts.

Beatrice G. Sydney, 102 WARWICK, R.I. – Beatrice G. Sydney died July 21 at Tamarisk Assisted Living Facility.

She was the wife of the late Albert Sydney, mother of Roberta Sol (Richard) of New Fairfield, Connecticut, sister of the late Abraham Ponce and Rose Holland, loving Baubie of Adam Sol (Rabbi Yael Splansky) and Rabbi Felicia Sol and cherished Bebe, great-grandmother, of Avishai, Eli, Jesse, Aiden and Sivan.

Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Jacob and Anna (Golden) Ponce, Bea had lived most of her life in Cranston and was a Rhode Islander through and through. She was a former member of the Cranston Jewish Center and active in its sisterhood. Bea was also a member of Hadassah. Most importantly, she was the fiercely loving and stylish matriarch of her family.
