UP FRONT Carol Schneider is quilting for comfort

Carol Schneider, 76, had no designs on a life of crafting when a co-worker told her she needed to make a quilt for her daughter’s wedding. In fact, her response was, “I need to do no such thing. I don’t sew, and I’m not making her a quilt. She said, yeah, you are.”

Never mind that at the time Schneider, then 59, would send out clothes to have a button put on, her co-worker came to her house with her sewing machine, cutting mat, scrap fabric and a rotary cutter. She taught Schneider how to use the rotary cutter and she did, indeed, make her daughter a quilt for her wedding in 2008.

FAR FROM THE WOMAN who couldn’t sew a button, Schneider, a self-professed snowbird, now has two sewing machines and setups, one in Rhode Island and one in Florida.

After making her daughter’s quilt she made a few more and then a few more. This past spring her niece, a realtor in West Hempstead, went to sell a widower’s home. His late wife had been a quilter who made quilts for Quilts of Valor Foundation, a national organization of volunteer quilters who create quilts for veterans. When her niece told him that Schneider also made charity quilts for veterans and foster children, he told her that Schneider could have all his late wife’s quilting supplies.

Schneider was astonished by what she found in the basement. “In my lifetime, I couldn’t use all this fabric,” she said. “I took maybe a quarter of it, and that filled 14 [huge] boxes.” Schneider spent her entire summer sitting at the kitchen table, watching TV with her husband Irv, and going through every single piece of fabric. “I touched every piece of fabric. Most of it I kept.”

It was while in Florida that Schneider decided to start making quilts for foster children through a local Jewish organization there. And then came October 7. Schneider put her other quilting projects on hold and began working on quilts for the families affected. “When it happened, nobody knew what to do,” she recalled. “I sent money and I prayed, but I just needed to do something more.” So, she began to sew.

Initially Schneider planned to give the comfort quilts to the families who had lost people at the Nova festival and those in the kibbutzim, but now that the hostages are returned, she has changed her focus. “The first group of people who I want to get these quilts to are those families who will never even get the remains back to bury because they [Hamas] don’t know where they are,” she explained. Even after she delivers

this batch of quilts in January, she plans to keep making quilts for families and survivors. “The second group will be for those people who lost someone,” said Schneider. “The third will be to give quilts to those people who have come back that need to know that when you wrap a quilt around you it’s like getting a hug.”

After Schneider made that first quilt for her daughter’s wedding, she realized just how powerful a gift it was. Her daughter and son-in-law had a tough first year due to a yearlong illness he has since recovered from. “She called me one day, and she was a little distraught, and she said, you know, mom, whenever I feel like this, I wrap that quilt around me and I just feel better,” Schneider recounted. “It’s true, a quilt does that, you know. Everyone that gets a quilt from me cries because it’s just so meaningful.”

Schneider’s priority is getting these quilts into the hands, and around the shoulders, of the people who need them most.

“I don’t need to meet with these families, right? I want to get them to an agency that can help distribute them.

I don’t want to encroach on their privacy while they’re trying to heal,” Piles of fabric.

“I know a lot of people that go to Israel. They do meet with hostages.

If they want to meet me, fine, but if not, that’s not why I’m going, I just want to get these quilts into their hands and hopefully it helps them.”

Creating these quilts has become a community effort for Schneider.

The process of machine sewing patterns through the three layers of a quilt, referred to as “long-arming” is a specialized skill that Schneider sends her pieced quilt tops out for.

The process can cost about $200 a quilt. Last winter, while at a Chabad rabbi’s Hanukkah party in Florida she brought five quilts with her to show people what she was doing and, in an attempt, to find other people who sewed and could help her.

“So, as it turned out, there were about a dozen people there who wore t-shirts that said, ‘Christians Supporting Israel’.

And one of them came over to me and she says, ‘you know, we’re from the Calvary Church. And I’m sure there are women in our church who know how to sew.’”

That woman put Schneider in touch with another woman who not

only knew how to sew but had one of the specialized machines needed to sew the layers together. “This woman must have quilted, I don’t know, 10 or 15, quilts for me, just out of the goodness of her heart,” said Schneider. “You know, she was just so wonderful that she did this, and she was happy to do it.”

At a Florida quilt meeting, Schneider went up during the show-and-tell portion and told the group about her project and asked for help. She said: “I don’t mean this as a political statement, and I don’t know where anybody stands on this, but this is what I’m doing. If you have a quilt that you don’t want, a quilt that you don’t need, if you feel like long arming for me. If you know anybody that wants to do that, let me know I could use all the help I could get.” Afterward a woman came up to her, looked at her and said, “Here, take this quilt.”

“It has been very complicated, right?” Schneider continued. “You know, it’s like, I don’t want to get into these conversations with people, right? I just want to help these families. I don’t care what your politics are. If I could make a million quilts, I’ve given to the kids in Gaza too. I can’t make a million quilts, so my priorities to get them to the Israelis.”

When Schneider gets anxious, she sews. Her upstairs guest room and the nearby sitting room are used as her sewing room and are filled with well-organized piles of fabric.

The lessons of Hanukkah this year

s the days grow shorter, the light becomes dimmer and the temperature falls precipitously, all of us look forward to

Hanukkah’s arrival. Our kitchens will be fragrant with the smell of latkes, while our living rooms and dining rooms will soon be glowing with the festive lights of the Hanukkah candles. This year, as we move closer to the solstice of Dec. 21, the shortest day of the year, our hanukkiyot will reach their

peak, when all of us will marvel at the magnificence of the festival lights driving out the inevitable darkness of the season.

EACH NIGHT, as we light our hanukkiyot, we say the blessings that take us back to the age of the Maccabees. The first blessing commands us to light the Hanukkah candles, while the second reminds us of the miracles of our ancestors, when the Temple’s Ner Tamid [Eternal Light] lasted for eight days, even though we had only enough oil for a single day. It is the Hanukkah miracle we teach our children and the one we recall each and every night.

This year, however, the miracle of those days long ago won’t evoke quite the same feelings. This year, when I light the Hanukkah candles, I will instead be thinking about our ancestors who were comfortable living among the Seleucids [Greeks] in ancient Israel.

Our ancestors believed that if they adapted to the ways of their Greek neighbors – if they assimilated into Greek culture – surely their religious practices and culture would be protected; their Jewish identities would remain untouched.

But as history teaches us, the exact opposite occurred. The more we assimilated, the RABBI HOWARD more the VOSS-ALTMAN Seleucids wondered why it was necessary to maintain our Jewish identities at all. And when Antiochus IV arose to be king, he issued a proclamation prohibiting meaningful Jewish observance, and thus, lit the spark for Judah Maccabee’s military revolt and miraculous triumph. Instead of keeping us immune from the effects of rising antisemitism, our accommodation to Greek culture only seemed

to make it worse. In short, the more we appeased the Seleucid authorities, the more emboldened they became in their oppression.

These days, the reality of Jewish life in the United States seems ever closer to those ancient times. On the afternoon just before Yom Kippur, the director of the F.B.I., our nation’s chief law enforcement officer, said on Fox News that the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) – a crown jewel of Jewish civic engagement – was acting “like a terrorist organization.” This verbal attack – by a high-ranking government official – was intended to chill the speech and conduct not just of the ADL, but every group dedicated to protecting the rights of minorities.

In response to this false and unprecedented attack, the ADL decided to say… nothing. Not only did it remove thousands of pages of civil rights material and educational curricula from its website, the ADL also urged other Jewish legacy organizations, including the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Union for Reform Judaism, to be silent.

Instead of protest, the ADL chose acceptance; instead of a principled defense, the ADL chose appeasement.

Perhaps the ADL believes that in these times of rising antisemitism, discretion is the better part of valor.

Perhaps it believes that “gam zeh ya-avor,” “this too shall pass,” and if we can keep our heads down long enough, we’ll weather this storm.

But if history is any guide, Hanukkah teaches us exactly the opposite. We

believed that as long as we fit in, as long as we didn’t rock the Seleucid boat by making too many waves, our Jewish way of life was protected.

Sadly, our appeasement only led to more religious oppression, fewer options and an outcome that would eventually result in the Maccabee’s armed rebellion.

There is, however, another way; a way inspired by the inner light of Jewish unity.

As most of you know by now, in October, there was a horrific antisemitic attack on a Jewish student at Smithfield High School. The Jewish Alliance and the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center combined their organizational skill and moral authority to respond powerfully and decisively.

On Nov. 3, at a Smithfield School Committee meeting, Rhode Island’s Jewish community, proudly and eloquently, stood as “Am Echad,” one people.

We were strong, we were unified, and led

by Adam Greenman, Wendy Joering and leaders from every congregation in Rhode Island, we lived the Jewish values of justice, dignity and speaking truth to power. One speaker after another reminded me that we were motivated not by revenge or punishment, but rather by responsibility and accountability. Indeed, the evening was nothing less than an early Hanukkah present: a night when the lights of Jewish unity and principle shone

brightly, a night when every member of our community was a “shamash,” the helper candle that lights all the others on the hanukkiyah.

This year, as we light our Hanukkah candles and place them in our windows, let us recall the days of old. Let us recall that the candles our ancestors lit stood against religious bigotry, against intolerance and against the whims and caprices of unchecked power. May the flames we light today also stand for freedom, peace and dignity, and may this Hanukkah teach us that the lights we kindle inspire the hope we need to sustain this beautiful, fragile world. I also have people, some local [Rhode Islanders], Myra Paul has done quilting for me. Also, Natalie Fleischer, she did one of those quilts out there.”

Schneider wishes she had even more people involved in creating quilts for those affected by Oct. 7 but says “you do what you can.”

To Schneider, Judaism and quilting are both about charity and giving. “I think it allows me to fulfill that

teshuvah with meaning and purpose. It just makes me feel so good that I’m doing something positive, and I think it’s a peaceful thing to do. I think that because Judaism is a giving religion that I feel like it really ties in with what I’m doing.”

Schneider is hoping to bring 50 quilts to Israel in January and is still looking for more quilts and people who want to long arm or free motion quilt the tops.

“Nobody’s ever given a quilt back to me,” Schneider pointed out. “I’ve never given a quilt to someone where they’ve said, these really aren’t my colors.”

She’s looking forward to getting the quilts to their intended recipients. “I don’t know who’s going to benefit more them, or me,” she said of the project. “I think I probably benefit more than they do.”

Female Orthodox Rabbi breathes new life into Hanukkah Yiddish tales

had the pleasure of interviewing Rabbi Miriam Udel on my

program and wanted to share her work and Hanukkah tale with Jewish RI readers.

Explain your focus on Yiddish literature, specifically Yiddish children’s literature.

“Yiddish was not the heritage language of all Jews, but it was the heritage language of Ashkenazi Jews, and that accounts for most of our American demographic. So, there’s a sense that there is something precious in our families that has been lost and accessing the fruits of Yiddish culture is a form of repair. This is part of what my work facilitates. A universal question every culture has is, ‘how are we going to transmit our heritage to our children, to the next generation?’ That interest in those questions is really what guided me toward researching and translating Yiddish children’s literature.”

Are there children’s Yiddish Hanukkah stories?

MIRIAM UDEL is the Judith London Evans Director of the Tam Institute of Jewish Studies and associate professor of Yiddish language, literature and culture at Emory University, where she studies the Jewish encounter with modernity. She is the author of several books.

Her newest just-published book is “Modern Jewish Worldmaking Through Yiddish Children’s Literature.” Dr. Udel, who uses the rabbinic title “darshanit” (interpreter), was ordained in 2019 as part of the first cohort of the Executive Ordination Track at Yeshivat Maharat, a program designed to bring qualified mid-career women into the Orthodox rabbinate.

“In the rabbinic tradition, we have a lot of different ideas and articulations of what this holiday is. We have the story about the oil lasting and the spiritual miracle that that represented. We have a story in the books of Maccabees about military conflict and an improbable victory as underdogs. We have stories about Jewish resistance to Hellenization and preserving Jewish culture, and when we talk about the modern West, we have additional stories.

We have a kind of lived experience of what it means to be celebrating this winter holiday, with its quiet candlelight, against the backdrop of living among majorities who are celebrating Christmas.

And so, all of these elements combine and are represented PATRICIA in Yiddish children’s literature.

RASKIN When I think about Hanukkah, the first stories that come to mind for me are a pair of tales that I write about in my new book about little boys who are kind of at the social margins of their schools that they attend. Now, when I say schools, I mean the very informal elementary education situation that took place in the home of the teacher, which was known as the cheder/kheyder meaning room, because it was in the main room of the teacher’s house. And two authors with Hanukkah stories are Sholem Aleichem, who may be a household name, because he wrote the stories on which “Fiddler on the Roof” is based, and Isaac Bashevis Singer, who is our only Yiddish writer who won the Nobel Prize in Literature and was a very prolific author.”

allowed to walk home alone from school on the first night of Hanukkah. He manages to get lost, and when he’s finally found and dragged home, his father extends unexpected grace on account of the holiday. Sometimes family is the greatest miracle of all.

As adults, we can really see that it’s a story about generational divergence, because the father is very traditionally pious, he’s a rabbi, and the son is already showing signs of heading for a different kind of future than what his parents are raising him toward. And so, the reconciliation conversation that takes place at the end of the story really shows the generations diverging, while also trying to stretch their way toward each other to maintain a sense of connection.

I think it’s a great story because it has this kind of simple reading for kids. It’s just a very pleasant, atmospheric story about observing Hanukkah, but it also has this deeper level.”

You are an Orthodox female rabbi which is rare. Please share that process.

“As of June of this year, there are 100 of us. We celebrated the graduation of our 100th graduate and we hail from all over the world including Australia, France, England, and soon, from Latin America.

We are at the liberal end of Orthodoxy, a group some people refer to as Open Orthodox.

I am not a pulpit rabbi. I conform better to the model of the scholar-rabbi, but some women do lead communities, including two in the Philadelphia area.”

What led you to become an Orthodox rabbi?

I was still teaching at Emory University when a new institution has come on the scene, Yeshivat Maharat.

They were training and ordaining women as Orthodox clergy.

I started those studies in 2016, and we graduated in 2019 as the first class in a program specifically for mid-career women with the necessary textual skills.”

So, what is next for you?

“I would like to bring Yiddish back into the American Jewish mainstream in a more thoughtful and informed way. Yiddish is the repository of our hopes, dreams, values and methods – for how to…raise mensches and be ethical, upstanding people, and I want us to have the fullest possible access to that repository.”

Twelve Tribes and my number

I

t’s my personal number: twelve! I was born on the twelfth day of the twelfth month, and yes, it resonates during Hanukkah with its candles joining the triumphant lights on the menorah, whatever tribe you derive

from. Plus, I remember watching from an ancient Dodge sedan as my family house was being built, the brick tapestry of the chimney rising skyward, at number twelve Creston (where I live to this day) and then there’s my summer retreat which also wears the number twelve above the front door.

zine and within the museums here in our smallest state, Rhode Island! Good things come in small packages!

Here is a wonderful and elaborate footnote for Hanukkah. The Cape Verdean Museum in Pawtucket tells a tale of the history of slavery in the American economy. In addition, the museum addresses the Jewish migration to Cape Verde which dates from the 16th century, when Sephardic Jews fled the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal. The Cape Verdean islands were much closer to the Iberian Peninsula than the Americas and, as a Portuguese colony,

the language and culture of Cape Verde was familiar to many Sephardic refugees.

A second wave of Jewish migrants arrived from Morocco in the 1840s.

I visited the museum’s collection of photographs, musical instruments and other material and found it quite fascinating. Some years ago I traveled to Cape Verde, and the wonderful exhibition the museum mounted in the spring of 2023 impressed me enormously and seemed a perfect way to celebrate and to recall that journey when

first I launched my research project. I want to thank the staff at this museum for their courtesy, kind reception and thorough research into the connection between Sephardic Jews and Cape Verde perhaps of special interest to toast among the Hanukkah candles this year when we need candlelight more than ever!

hat would I do on my birthday? Eager to count my blessings, I didn’t want to stay home to tend to some long-neglected

chores. Likewise, I didn’t want to hang around to await any congratulatory emails or phone calls.

HOW ABOUT READING a novel, drafting another essay or taking a hundred photographs? Quite seldom can I resist.

Betsey and I feel quite privileged to travel near and far. Only a few weeks earlier, we had happily experienced our annual Maine reunion with our kids and grandkids.

Several times a year, Betsey and I enjoy visiting Boston. Yes, it makes sense to avoid rush hour, but when would that be?

Except during summer, we almost always enjoy visiting Newport. Though it doesn’t require a hotel reservation or even a full tank of gas, it often feels like a vacation.

Betsey, who grew up north of Boston, first visited Newport as a religious school student. The kids’ obvious destination was Touro.

My first visit to Rhode Island did not occur until 1971, when I was a graduate student in art history at Columbia. During spring break, I went to see some Boston friends, and then spent a night at a chum’s boyhood home in Rumford.

The next morning, Larry had to rush back to work, so his father gave me a quick tour of Providence.

In 1982, while living in my native Los Angeles, I met Betsey at a Jewish singles’ party. (Actually, it was a chamber music concert in an older couple’s backyard.)

Within a few months, we developed a deep relationship. I soon met her parents when they visited L.A., but I was also curious to meet her siblings and make a second visit to Andover, the town in Massachusetts where she had grown up. In 1976, I visited its renowned Addison Gallery of American Art, at Phillips Academy, on my Bicentennial tour of the Northeast.

In May 1983, Betsey and I decided to take a day trip from Andover to Newport.

Bobby, her mother, had never been, so we invited her along.

On that gorgeous spring day, we were thrilled by just about everything-- even finding a few parking spaces.

Of course, my major destination was Touro, but we visited numerous historical sites before and after a casual lunch. It was while strolling on the Cliff Walk that BetGEORGE M. sey and I asked GOODWIN each other, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful to live around here some day?”

That day arrived in August 1987. Neither of us imagined that we would stay even a decade. How about nearly four?

No doubt our visit to Newport in 1983 helped set a joyous tone. A few days later, when visiting Montreal, I proposed to Betsey. That Sunday, when not much else was open, we decided to peek inside a landmark department store. A sales lady asked, “Were you two just married?” Flabbergasted, I replied, “No, but we were just engaged.” Her reply?

“Mazel tov!”

By studying my calendars, I could probably determine how many times Betsey and I have enjoyed visiting Newport. But why would the precise number matter? The place beckons.

A visit to Touro or a stroll past its cemetery seems almost obligatory. I’m also fascinated by Peter Harrison’s design of the Redwood Library. Its numerous additions also represent for me an almost perfect synthesis of books, art, architecture, relaxation and silence. For that matter, I often enjoy wearing a Redwood necktie or baseball cap.

Did I mention that rain or shine, we usually enjoy a wonderful meal in Newport too? One of the most memorable-- nearly two decades ago-- was our last visit with my aunt and her husband from Los Angeles, who were enjoying a New England cruise.

We also like driving past Newport’s Thurston Avenue.

It has the same name as the street in L.A. where we Goodwin siblings grew up.

On my recent birthday visit to Newport, I was excited to make a few acquaintances. For instance, there were two bewildered Israeli tourists, searching for Touro’s entrance. Given the candles on their cakes, I also congratulated a few fellow luncheon diners.

While walking near Touro, I glanced at a pedestrian, who somehow looked familiar. I stopped to ask if we were somehow acquainted. Bertram Lippincott, III, who has been the Newport Historical Society’s librarian for 35 years, also remembered me from some visits decades ago.

I’ve enjoyed a longer and far deeper friendship with my East Side neighbors, Jim Tobak, a Newport native, and his wife, Jill.

As graduate students at Stanford more than a half-century ago, Jim and I lived in nearby fraternity houses, but we never met.

I happened to meet Jim and Jill around 1988, when they were my students in a Brown Learning Community course about Frank Lloyd Wright, a BLC course I also taught at the Newport Art Museum.

Eight years later, when Betsey and I were about to purchase our East Side home, one that resembles an early Wright bungalow, we bumped into Jim across the street. He then told his neighbor how much we would love her place.

Fortunately, we also became acquainted with Jim’s uncle, Harold Werner, a distinguished Newport haberdasher and philanthropist. We felt honored to attend his funeral. Indeed, when recently driving by the Farewell Street Cemetery on my birthday, we

naturally thought of him. We became friends with Jim’s Newport cousins, Bailey Siletchnik and Paul Tobak, and have met others who live in Massachusetts.

Did my romance with Betsey somehow lead to another with that cosmopolis on Aquidneck Island? Jimmy has often remarked that the isolated, small Navy town of his childhood disappeared long ago. But I always hope to enjoy a deep bond with its

successor as well as a larger Newport family. It would include a late rabbi, Stanley Chyet, who was my professor and friend at Hebrew Union College. More than 50 years ago, he wrote a biography of Newport’s Aaron Lopez, the colonial Jewish merchant.

Trying to read the tide “The Sea of Faith Was once, too, at the full, and round earth’s shore Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.

But now I only hear Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar…”

SO BEGINS the third stanza of “Dover Beach,” by Matthew Arnold (18221866), one of the bestknown poems of Victorian England, thought to have been composed in 1851 but not published until 1865.

The poem opens with a scene of both natural and domestic tranquility: “The sea is calm tonight.”

A loving couple, most likely the poet and his wife, quietly enjoying each other’s presence, a moonlit night at Dover Beach, the tide slowly retreating, “…on the French coast the light / Gleams and is gone; the cliffs on England stand, / Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.” And yet, and yet…the retreating tide brings with it “the eternal note of sadness.”

But why “the eternal note of sadness”? As the beginning of the third stanza suggests, the high tide at Dover Beach is a metaphor for the high tide of all-embracing Christian faith in Victorian England, which was at the time beginning to ebb; that ebbing tide was withdrawing with it the comforting, though clichéd, certainty that “God’s in His heaven; all’s right with the world.” (Robert Browning, 1841) At first glance, Arnold seemed to be insisting in “Dover Beach” that the Sea of Faith – the warm, embracing faith of Christianity as practiced in Victorian England – was an ebbing tide; the certainties of Christian dogma were being eclipsed by the uncomfortable certainties of an emerging scientific evidence that by now has seemed to infuse the secular reality of our 21st century. Several years ago, when my wife Sandy and I

had the privilege of visiting numerous churches and cathedrals throughout the European continent, we were overwhelmed by their physical splendor; the buildings were overflowing with tourists, but almost empty of worshippers.

On the other hand, in the Nov. 6 issue of “The New York Review of Books,” Harvard professor Peter RABBI JAMES E. Gordon ROSENBERG calls the question: Is the tide of religious life ebbing in Western culture, as portrayed in “Dover Beach,” or has the situation become much more complex? Gordon devotes his essay to a review of Kwame Anthony Appiah’s “Captive Gods: Religion and the Rise Social Science.”

Early on, Gordon reports: “In the US, despite the enduring appeal of evangelical Christianity, data from the Pew Research Center indicate that nearly 30 percent of the population is unaffiliated.”

Nevertheless, Gordon points out that “Appiah asks us to think more carefully when we call something a religion. As many sociologists and historians of religion will confirm, the word “religion” has become a point of controversy in recent years because it serves for so many things.

It can seem hard to define because it is so expansive in meaning.”

We owe this expansion of the meaning of the word “religion” to the 19th-early 20th-century pioneers of the discipline of sociology: the Frenchman Emil Durkheim, as well the Germans Max Weber and Georg Simmel. For these seminal thinkers, religion is no longer considered to

(JTA) – Over 300 Jewish leaders, including women’s rights advocates and rabbis, urged the United Nations on Tuesday [Dec. 2] to remove Reem Alsalem, the U.N. rapporteur on violence against women and girls, for denying that rape occurred during Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

The letter, which was addressed to U.N. secretary-general Antonio Guterres, came two weeks after Alsalem claimed in a post on X that “No independent investigation found that rape took place on the 7th of October.”

In the letter, its signatories express their “horror and outrage” at Alsalem’s rhetoric, and cite two U.N. reports from March 2024 and July 2025 that concluded that there was “reasonable grounds” to believe that sexual violence had taken place during the attacks “in multiple locations, including rape and gang rape.”

The petition was organized

by Amy Elman, a professor at Kalamazoo College who has authored books on antisemitism and state responses to sexual violence, and Rafael Medoff, the director of the David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies. It was shared with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency soon after being sent to Guterres.

“The targeted sexual abuse of Israelis by Hamas and its supporters is one weapon in the arsenal of those seeking Israel’s obliteration,” Elman said in a statement. “It’s outrageous that deniers such as Reem Alsalem are aiding and abetting the sexual violence by claiming it never happened. These apologists should be ashamed of themselves.”

The letter’s signatories include Deborah Lipstadt, the former antisemitism envoy; Judith Rosenbaum, the head of the Jewish Women’s Archives; Rabbi Irving Greenberg, the former

chairman of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum; Rabbi Deborah Waxman, the president of Reconstructing Judaism; and Hebrew College president Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld.

Dispute over whether sexual violence took place as Hamas murdered about 1,200 people in Israel on Oct. 7 has solidified as a point of sustained interest for some of Israel’s staunchest critics who allege that Israel and its supporters are using claims of rape as propaganda. Even the United Nations, frequently maligned by Israel and its supporters over its record toward Israel, has drawn allegations of complicity in the propaganda campaign from pro-Palestinian voices – though the U.N. rapporteur on Palestinian rights, Francesca Albanese, who has faced her own calls for dismissal from the Trump administration, has also publicly questioned the claims.

In addition to the U.N. reports, independent reporting and research by an Israeli nonprofit have validated claims of sexual violence on Oct. 7.

In the X exchange that spurred the new letter, Alsalem was arguing with another user about the Israeli government’s prosecution of soldiers accused of abusing a Palestinian detainee.

A day later, Alsalem posted a link to a Substack podcast from October where she criticized the credibility of the March 2024 U.N. report and said she had sought contact with the Israeli government to confirm its findings but had not received a response.

be a matter of faith between an individual and God, but rather, according to Durkheim, “religion is simply society’s representation of itself.”

During my 33 years in Barrington as rabbi of Temple Habonim, I developed what might be called a subliminal “tide consciousness.” Since the synagogue sits atop a small hill across New Meadow Road from the Barrington River, I almost always knew more or less where the water stood – high tide or low.

However, should the water be standing at about its midlevel, I rarely had the time, to wait long enough at river’s edge to determine whether the tide was coming in or flowing out into Narragansett Bay, through the bay waters and into the “harborless immensities” of the Atlantic Ocean.

Unlike Matthew Arnold in the mid-1800s, I am not able to tell at this moment of religious confusion – autumn, 2025 – which way the tide of faith is flowing.

Like Kwame Anthony Appiah, I must withhold my judgment now that the very meaning of the word “religion” has become so difficult to define as to render it, for all practical purposes, meaningless. I suspect that my generation will not live long enough to know for certain in which direction the tide of faith is flowing.

Nor will future generations ever be able to agree upon what the word “religion” means. I for one do not know how to read the tide.

Peter Gordon concludes his review of Appiah’s “Captive Gods: Religion and the Rise of Social Science” with both a hint of hope and a word of warning: “Today, Appiah writes, we hardly suffer from a scarcity of religion; it would be more accurate to say that we confront a surplus. But while religion can hold us together, it can also tear us apart.”

Empty place settings and the power of presence

y article in November 2025 was about some of the “high profile” hostages and victims from Oct. 2023 onward who have

grabbed my attention. I saved this story about the Bibas family for a separate article, partially due to some personal experiences of mine in relation to their story.

Within a few hours of me seeing this, it was announced that Shiri and the boys would be returned, but that they were not alive.

It is common in Israel that, when someone is murdered in a manner that shakes the nation, thousands (of strangers) will attend the funeral. The Bibas family requested that DANIEL STIEGLITZ the funeral itself be kept private, with only family and friends in attendance. So, to pay their respects while still respecting the family’s wishes, thousands lined the roads of the funeral procession. Yarden’s sister shared a heartfelt statement about seeing the country mourning with them.

For several reasons, including my special attention to their place settings in Hostage Square just a few hours before the tragic announcement, I decided to attend the public shiva (the seven days of mourning that family members observe immediately after the death and burial of a loved one).

Hundreds of people were in the shiva hall. A constant influx of thousands more waited outside until there was space inside. Upon my entry into the hall, I was told Yarden Bibas was taking a break. The moment he came back, a large crowd of people

Medoff said in a statement that Alsalem’s continued employment reflected inconsistent standards when it comes to Israel and antisemitism.

by Hamas. Yarden, the husband and father, was also kidnapped, and kept separate from his family.

Yarden was returned alive in February 2025.

At the time of his release, the status of his wife and children was unknown. Then, sadly, later that same month, Yarden’s wife and children were returned in coffins.

Besides being among the most high-profile hostages, the Bibas family stands out to me personally for other reasons. In mid-February I went to what is known as Hostage Square in Tel Aviv. Among the many things set up there is a long table with chairs and place settings for every single hostage. On the plates of the hostages that have been returned is a heart, and written on it in Hebrew is “I returned!”

The Bibas family’s place settings stood out to me for a few reasons. As this was soon after Yarden’s release, his plate had the “I returned!” heart. The status of his wife and children was still unknown at the time. The chairs for the children were child-sized and covered with stuffed animals that I believe people left there.

They all simply wanted to personally console him.

For obvious reasons, saying that Yarden looked emotionally burnt out would be a severe understatement.

Here was a man that had just been released from a hellish captivity, only to find out soon afterwards that he was no longer a husband, nor a father.

Barriers were set up in front of Yarden and his family. To give them some semblance of privacy, rather than seeing a crowd of onlookers staring in their direction.

The barriers also formed a line to manage the flow of those waiting to pay their respects.

I get that we, as a country, also grieve for any and all victims. It can be impossible to know which hostage families can both handle and even be emotionally aided by this level of condolences and support. Seeing the emotionally drained look when Yarden came in, I personally didn’t

feel that my one face and a brief interaction with him would make a difference.

However, I still wanted to at least try and do something for the Bibas family while I was there. So, I asked the people setting up the barriers (who may have been family friends) if there was anything I could do to help. They politely declined my offer.

Still, as some friends of mine always say, “Never underestimate the power of your presence.” Even though I chose not to have a face-to-face interaction with Yarden, at the very least I was still present. In her grief, his sister might not have even noticed if only a single individual was standing vigil along the route of the funeral procession. What she noticed was the thousands of people standing side-by-side.

At the very least, I was one of the people who had come and gone from that hall (a single drop that raised the sea) and showed Yarden and his family that we, as a people

and as a nation, were present for him. As well as for his wife and two children and the grief we felt toward the loss of their light.

To move forward into a better world as a people; as a nation; as the entirety of the human race; we can never forget what our presence means. No matter how big or small it might be. Joy and sadness do not have to be, and should not be, things that any one of us bears alone. Sharing such things, no matter how disconnected we might be from the source of such feelings, is what can unify us.

The tastiest way to make jelly donuts for a crowd this Hanukkah

NOW LOOK, NOTHING – and I mean nothing – beats a perfectly fried sufganiya fresh out of hot oil, dusted with powdered sugar, still warm enough to make the jam dangerously hot. That’s peak Hanukkah right there. But if you’re feeding a crowd or just don’t want to smell your house up with hot oil, here’s a pretty fantastic baked version for you.

Fair warning: This is a rich dough that’s going to feel more like a very, very thick cake batter than bread dough when you first mix it. Between the eggs, butter and milk, you’re working with a seriously wet dough that’s going to test your patience and stick to everything it touches. But don’t panic – this is exactly what you want. All that richness is going to give you tender, pillowy sufganiyot that pull apart like clouds.

Here’s how to deal with the sticky situation: First, resist the urge to add more flour.

Instead, embrace the chill – a cold dough is

easier to handle. After the first rise, pop it in the fridge for 30 minutes. When shaping, keep your hands lightly oiled rather than floured.

The oil prevents sticking without toughening the dough like extra flour would.

The payoff? Gorgeously golden, honeycomb-patterned pull-apart sufganiyot that look like they came from a high-end bakery.

They’re tender, rich and perfect for filling with whatever your heart desires. Plus, since they’re baked, you can make a whole batch at once instead of frying in little batches while your family hovers around you like hungry seagulls.

Is it traditional? Maybe not. But neither was adding Nutella as a filling, and we all know how that turned out.

Besides, if anyone gives you grief about baking instead of frying, just remind them that the real miracle of Hanukkah was about making things last longer than expected — and these beauties will definitely stick around at least a day longer than their fried cousins.

For the dough: 4 cups (560 g) all-purpose flour 8 grams instant yeast (about 2 teaspoons) ⅓ cup (60 g) granulated sugar 1 teaspoon fine salt 1 cup (250 ml) milk, room temperature 2 large eggs 2 large egg yolks 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract Zest of 1 lemon (optional) 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg (optional) 150 g unsalted butter, cubed and softened For finishing: Large egg yolk whisked + 1 Tbsp water (for egg wash) Your favorite jam, for filling Powdered sugar, for dusting

INSTRUCTIONS

Take butter, milk and eggs out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before starting.

To make the dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine flour, instant yeast, sugar and salt. Add milk, eggs, egg yolks, vanilla and optional flavorings. Mix with dough hook on low speed until combined, about 2 minutes. With the mixer running, gradually add softened butter, piece by piece, waiting for each addition to be incorporated before adding more.

Once all butter is added, knead for 8-10 minutes

until the dough is smooth and elastic. Dough will be very soft and sticky – this is correct.

Place dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap or clean kitchen towel. Let rise in a warm place (75°F) for 1-1.5 hours or until doubled. For easier handling, refrigerate dough for 30 minutes after rising.

To shape and arrange: First choose your pan setup:12×12- or 13×13-inch square cake pan (ideal), or half sheet pan with foil walls (you’ll need to create a 12×12-inch space by folding heavy-duty foil into 3-inch-high strips to form a square border inside your pan). Line your pan with parchment paper. With lightly oiled hands, divide dough into 16 pieces (74 g each). Roll each piece into a smooth ball. Arrange in a 4×4 grid with even spacing — they should be close enough to touch when fully risen. The foil walls or pan sides will help them rise upward instead of outward, creating perfectly fluffy, pull-apart sufganiyot. Cover loosely and let rise for 45-60 minutes until puffy. The balls should be touching and fill the space completely.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

Gently brush risen dough with egg wash.

Bake 20-25 minutes until golden brown and internal temperature reaches 190°F. Let cool slightly for 5 minutes. Cut a small slit on each sufganiya, pipe in about 1 teaspoon of jam.

Dust generously with powdered sugar. Best served warm.

From golems to Horton to banana menorahs: This year’s Hanukkah kids’ books light up the imagination

settings, some familiar from the pantheon of children’s literature and Jewish ideas. Families from across the diverse Jewish spectrum will enjoy the new titles that celebrate the popular eightday holiday, also known as the Festival of Lights.

A very Hallmark Hanukkah

’Tis the season. For Hallmark Channel’s made-forTV movies, that is.

T

he cable network, which premiered in 2001, aired its first original, family-friendly, Christmas-themed made-for-TV movie that

same year. This low-budget film, titled “A Town Without Christmas,” earned a respectable 5.4 Nielsen rating, or approximately 7.2 million viewers, which inspired the launch of Hallmark’s annual “Countdown to Christmas” lineup of original content.

LAST YEAR, “Countdown to Christmas” included 34 new movies that ran from mid-October to late-December, attracted 85 million viewers and, according to AdWeek, accounted for onethird of the card company’s annual ad revenue.

This year, Hallmark is offering 24 newly minted Yuletide tales with such titles as “The Snow Must Go On,” “Melt My Heart This Christmas” and “A Newport Christmas.” That last one features a 1905 socialite who transports to present day Rhode Island after making a wish on a Christmas comet and, in true Hallmark fashion, falls in love by the closing credits. It was filmed in Buffalo.

These highly formulaic made-for-TV movies are loved by many because they are shamelessly romantic, extraordinarily wholesome and pleasantly predictable.

They are ignored or mocked by others for exactly the same reasons.

In the past three years, Hanukkah seems to have worked its way into the lineup, with “Hanukkah on Rye” in 2022, “Round and Round” in 2023, and last year’s “Hanukkah on the Rocks.” This year’s “Countdown to Christmas” will be offering “Oy To The World,” where St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church’s youth choir director must team up with the substitute youth choir director from Temple Beth Am, and put on a combined music program for the holidays.

It should be worth missing, for none of the Hanukkah shows to date have been particularly popular or well received by Jewish online critics the likes of Kveller, Hey Alma and Solzy at the Movies. “Gentile-fication” has been the chief concern along with the tendency

to cast Jewish roles with non-Jewish actors.

In the spirit of giving this holiday season, I recruited my cousin – a veteran writer of Hallmark and Lifetime TV programming – to take a stab at a winning Hanukkah-themed story made from the essential ingredients that helped define the Hallmark brand. My inquiries are in bold.

Hallmark holiday shows tend to feature attractive but forgotten ’90s TV actors.

Thoughts on casting ours?

I’d go with a known commodity as the female lead, so that there is clear lineage between the “Countdown to Christmas” franchise and our new “Hallmark does Hanukkah” installment.

Lacey Chabert (“Party of Five”) is a favorite, having been in over a dozen Hallmark Channel films. Danica McKellar (“Wonder Years”) has been in several and has great name recognition.

Hallmark veteran Lori Loughlin (“Full House”) would have been another option if not for that whole college admissions bribery scandal thing, which is surely its own made-for-TV movie waiting to happen.

None is actually Jewish, which is apparently not a problem at Hallmark, but I’d throw an Israeli actor into the mix just to cover our backs. A heartthrob like Aki Avni would attract Hallmark’s target demographic of women ages 25 to 54, only we need someone younger and less talented for the male lead – which is code for more affordable since the Hallmark budget will be just south of $3 million.

Let’s go with Danica, for no other reason than she was a teenage TV crush of mine.

And I hear Lior Ashkenazi is

affordable ever since making the Israeli film “Karaoke” in 2022. Most Hallmark holiday movies tell the tale of a seemingly mismatched couple brought together by forces beyond their control. What about Lior and Danica?

Since English is a second language for our Israeli, let’s make it a distant second and use the language barrier as a vehicle for light comedy, some dramatic miscommunication and something to be overcome so there is a final moment of true and heartfelt understanding and emotional connection. A Hanukkah miracle!

What’s their story?

Our Ari-lite could be the other of Danica’s dead husband – dead spouses are popular on the Hallmark Channel – and feels obligated to help her raise her children. Hallmark movies tend to have plenty of children on screen. Let’s give her three.

Or he is a widowed foreign diplomat with his children in tow during a mission in the U.S. Their plane is forced to land due to a snowstorm.

Local authorities ask Danica, the only Jew in this small American town, to house them until the weather clears. Choose one. Either way, he’s in town for eight days and eight nights and they fall in love. A Hanukkah miracle!

Let’s go with the latter. What

small American town?

Hallmark gravitates toward fictional locations with homey, holiday-inspired names like Garland, Hollyvale and Homestead. For our story, I’d go with Little Dreidel, New Hampshire or Semisemitic, South Dakota.

How religious should we make this story?

Hallmark prefers the spiritual or supernatural over Godly. They don’t want to lose agnostics, who are apparently huge card-buyers for secular occasions.

Intervention by elves was recently used in “Northpole,” angels helped out in “A Heavenly Christmas” and a storefront Santa worked his way into “A Wish for Christmas.” Perhaps we go with a heavily bearded homeless man the locals call “The Rabbi,” because he spouts non sequitur wisdom while talking to himself.

Let’s talk about production values.

Or the lack thereof. These made-for-TV movies are pically made within a threeweek window, so production values are limited though sufficiently attractive to maintain the glossy Hallmark brand and holiday spirit.

Happy ending?

Of course. Silly question.

Sounds like we have the makings of a made-for-TV Hanukkah movie that people might watch. What would the

promotional blurb sound like on the Hallmark Channel?

As families in the small town of Maccabi, Maine prepare for Christmas, a snowstorm forces a small private plane to make an emergency landing. “Banana Menorah”

Lee Wind; illustrated by Karl West Apples & Honey Press; ages 3-5

In Lee Wind’s light-hearted story, Skylar, a spirited young girl, and her two fathers are vacationing on an island far from home on the first night of Hanukkah. But both dads forgot to pack a menorah. The clever girl improvises with what’s on hand – the first night, it’s a banana menorah, the next, a granola bar. When they get home in time for the fourth candle and light their three menorahs, Skylar misses the new ones. For the rest of the holiday, her family celebrates with friends and all kinds of menorahs. Karl West’s animated illustrations add to the fun for a playful, creative holiday. Instructions for a banana menorah at the end – though there are also mass market versions available to buy.

“Lost and Found Hanukkah”

Joy Preble; illustrated by Lisa Anchin Chronicle Books; ages 5-8

LGBT families and homemade menorahs are part of Joy Preble’s heartwarming story about Nate, who loves celebrating Hanukkah and lighting his family’s three menorahs, including one he made. When he and his two fathers move to a new apartment, Nate’s menorah gets lost. At Amy’s Judaica shop, Nate befriends the latke-loving, furry store kitty named Kugel, who runs out of the shop. When Nate’s dads fry up a batch of latkes for the holiday, the clever boy hatches a plan to find Kugel.

By story’s end, everyone is reunited in time to celebrate Hanukkah and Nate carves a perfect new menorah. Lisa Anchin’s large cartoon-style illustrations reflect the story’s warmth and love.

“The Book of Candles: Eight Poems for Hanukkah”

Laurel Snyder; illustrated by Leanne Hatch Clarion Books; ages 4-8

Children will enjoy following a young girl, her siblings, their parents and – again – a kitten as they light Hanukkah candles every night. Each night’s poem flows lyrically to the next. The award-winning Laurel Snyder adds a note for each candle that illuminates the themes of the holiday and

“A Dragon Called Spark: A Hanukkah Story” Lily Murray; illustrated by Kirsti Beautyman Kalaniot Books; ages 4-7

In Lily Murray’s imaginative tale, a young girl named Eva feels lonely when she and her family move somewhere new, and she is far from friends at the start of Hanukkah. For comfort, Eva turns to Spark, her imaginary friend, a diminutive flying dragon. But Eva is worried that Spark is lonely and hopes for a Hanukkah miracle – a friend for herself and for Spark. When she meets Charlie, her neighbor, they become friends and she tells him about Spark, whom he can’t see. The power of friendship shines in this poignant story. Kirsty Beautyman’s illustrations capture the magic of the tale, which gets high marks for featuring a multiracial friendship.

very year around Hanukkah I am reminded of my time spent in Sunday school

and the things we would do to prepare for the holiday. Learning songs, playing

INGREDIENTS

dreidel, eating piles of latkes and making arts and crafts were among some of my

favorites, but there’s one thing that sticks out after all these years: making edible dreidels.

When I was a kid, we made them with pretzel sticks, marshmallows, peanut butter and Hershey’s Kisses, but now that I’m older and can buy my own groceries, I opt for different means of gluing the pieces together and adding my own twist to this classic activity.

THANKFULLY, this quick and crafty recipe can be easily tailored to suit the needs of anyone’s palate or dietary restrictions. The saltiness of the pretzel is a welcome balance to the sweetness of the marshmallow, edible “glue” and Hershey’s Kisses. Depending on what type of chocolate and glue you opt to use, you can make this simple treat with a wonderful depth of flavor.

My personal preference is to use

dark chocolate Hershey’s Kisses so that the bitterness adds to the sweet and salty elements, but they can be made to any individual taste.

Whether it’s a family gathering, a Sunday school class or even a temple service, taking a few minutes to make these cute, simple treats and share them with friends is something anyone can appreciate. Though this is

definitely a project more tailored toward children, even as an adult, I’ve enjoyed making these – and eating them too. While they’re not exactly “playable” like a regular dreidel, they’re equally as fun for people of all ages. Using writing gel, though not necessary, gives you the ability to decorate your dreidels to make them artistic and unique before digging into this fun treat.

12 pretzel sticks 12 marshmallows 4 tablespoons glue (nut butter, marshmallow fluff or frosting) 12 Hershey’s Kisses Edible writing gel (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

Placing the marshmallow in the palm of your hand so as not to squish the sides, press one end of the pretzel stick into the center of one end of the marshmallow, and push it ¾ of the way through.

Using your “glue,” put a pea-sized amount on the flat end of a Hershey’s Kiss before placing it in the center of the other end of the marshmallow.

Decorate with writing gel, if desired, and enjoy!

When the call went out for unique and fun ideas for latke toppings the replies were fast and furious.

“Lox and crème fraiche with a sprig of fresh dill or a

caper and a slight squeeze of lemon,” said Jennifer Zwirn, chief development officer. She recommends paring it with, “a glass of bubbles on the side.”

Michelle Cicchitelli, chief program officer, offered a slight twist on the classic, “I make sweet potato latkes, and the family loves them! Lox is good on those as well.”

In a similar vein, Claire

Uziel, manager, endowment / campaign operations, told the chat, “My mom makes curried sweet potato latkes.

My mother-in-law will try just about any veggie! I just eat them.”

The fanciest topping suggestion came from Stephanie Hague, chief strategy officer, who chimed in, “When I lived in eastern Europe for a year, folks enjoyed their latkes

with caviar! Pure class!”

Fran Ostendorf, editor, Jewish Rhode Island, tried the zucchini latkes last year which she deemed, “Very Delicious.” She added that she made latkes with “Just Egg” for her egg-allergic granddaughter and those turned out “pretty good too.”

Whether you are making non-traditional latkes this year or sticking with the

tried-and-true potato, Joy Sullivan, business manager, Youth & Family, summed it up perfectly in her response, “Now I’m hungry!!!!”

130 years of Jewish life at Brown

The timeline of Jewish history at Brown University.

ore than 1,000 folks recently attended a weekend conference celebrating 130 years of Jewish life at Brown University.

They included legions of alumni plus students, Rabbi Sarah Mack of Temple Beth-El in Providence and John Friedman, dean of the Watson School of International and Public Affairs at Brown.

THERE WERE PANELS galore, tons of kosher food and endless schmoozing.

Most of the meals and several of the programs were held in a tent the size of Chicago, and seminars, two film screenings, and a gala celebration of the arts were spread out around campus. This 1966 alumnus was exhausted making the rounds, and I won’t burden you with an encyclopedic recitation of everywhere I went.

But here are some personal moments I will remember.

I will remember that at a Brown RISD Hillel reception I met Sandy Hollander, a Brown’54 alum from New Jersey, who knows a daughter of ours from her work in a Jewish federation there.

He mentioned having had a great friend at Brown named Norman Orodenker. Orodenker became a prominent Providence attorney, but he first was a counselor of mine in the 1950s at Camp Tel Noar in New Hampshire.

I will remember being at an exhibit of Jewish-related items in the Brown Archives and coming upon a Haggadah used in Germany 1946 by displaced survivors of the

Nazi extermination machine.

One of the Haggadah’s creators was Abraham J. Klausner. I immediately showed it to my wife Elizabeth. Why? Because Rabbi Klausner married us in 1967 - indeed, one day after Elizabeth received her Brown degree.

I will remember chatting with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, after he spoke about his campaign to end Jewish hate, indeed all hate. I reminded him that in 1996 when I was a season ticket holder and working at the Providence Journal I wrote him a letter complaining about a game scheduled for 4 pm, hours before Kol Nidre, and asking that it be changed to 1, and that he took my letter to a meeting of NFL owners and got it done, and then I wrote a column about it. Kraft smiled at the memory.

I will remember a program that consisted of a dialogue between my rabbi, Sarah Mack of Providence’s Temple Beth-El, and a fellow congregant, John Friedman, dean of Brown’s Watson School of International and Public Affairs.

I will remember that I was on a panel about journalism

and that Elizabeth wisely skipped it on order to attend a panel on public service hosted by Mayor Brett Smiley and that included former Congressman David Cicilline ‘83, two more Beth-El members. Another panelist was Delaware Gov. Matthew Meyer ‘94, and Elizabeth loved it. She said the core of the politicians’ message was that their work is all about tikun olam.

I wouldn’t brag about my panel, but I will remember that at the end Alan Grace ‘62 came by to say hello. His sister Mimi was my classmate, and their mother, the former Irene Burwick ‘30, and my mother, the former Anna Horvitz ‘31, were Brown contemporaries.

Indeed, Irene’s was among a number of autographs in a scrapbook my mother kept as a freshman in 1927-28 at the Women’s College in Brown University, which was soon renamed Pembroke College.

Pembroke was abolished in 1971, when Brown became fully coed.

I will remember hearing another speaker, Amy Sohn ‘95, whose grandmother, Sara Sohn ‘29, was another contemporary of my mother.

Amy, who has done exhaustive research, spoke about Brown-Pembroke discrimination against Jewish applicants and students in the 1920s and 30s. This panel was held in Alumnae Hall on the Pembroke campus. I told Amy that my mother’s scrapbook included a program from the dedication of Alumnae Hall in 1927, an event Amy’s grandmother likely also attended. And here we were, 98 years later.

(Something I read after the conference, in an article Amy wrote that said the legendary Pembroke Dean Margaret Shove Morriss was antisemitic, gave me a small chuckle. My mother once maybe more than once - told me Dean Morriss one morning announced to an assemblage of students that she had an extra ticket to a concert that night, and would anyone like it, and my mother, who loved concerts, grabbed it.

So now I wonder if the dean realized that the girl sitting next to her at the concert was Jewish!)

The single thing I will remember most vividly about the Nov. 7-9 conference also involved my mother. I grew up in Fall River’s Temple

Beth El, where my father, Lester, was a president. After he died in 1978, my mother commissioned an impressive Tree of Life plaque in his memory, and for decades it graced a wall in a chapel there. But the congregation shrunk and recently vacated the building and moved to a small church. I rescued the plaque and donated it to Brown RISD Hillel, where it now adorns a wall on the second floor.

At the conference, at the reception at Hillel, I showed Brown President Christina Paxson a photo of the plaque and told her about its history.

She said she’d like to see it, so I brought her upstairs. “It’s beautiful,’’ she exclaimed.

I told her my mother would be positively thrilled to know that a Brown president took the time to admire the plaque. And to think, a Brown president who is a Jewish woman - my mother would be absolutely over the moon.

Local musician Avi Jacob headlines community holiday event Dec. 13

rom a young age, music called to Avi Jacob. The Dartmouth, Massachusetts, native grew up listening to Rabbi Jim Rosenberg play the guitar at Temple Habonim in Barrington. His parents

would have preferred he become a lawyer, he said. But it was not to be.

“MUSIC IS WHAT I’m suited for,” Jacob said in a recent interview. At 8, he was playing instruments. At 10, he sang onstage. “It made me feel good,” he said. “I never thought I’d become a professional musician. I didn’t know anyone who did that.”

He went to college, tried teaching history and farming, but the love of music won out. After living in Boston, Western Massachusetts and Charleston, South Carolina, he’s settled in Providence.

Jacob will perform Dec. 13 at the Dwares Jewish Community Center in Providence as part of a community holiday event sponsored by the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island.

The singer-songwriter said he doesn’t play specifically Jewish music but there are Jewish themes in his music because “that is who I am.”

Much of what he plays is music that influences him.

Song from artists such as Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan. He will play a Yiddish favorite, too.

When he plays at the JCC, you will surely hear “Every Night of Hanukkah.”

“I’m looking into planning an album of Jewish songwriter covers,” he said.

For now, he is working on promoting his latest project, Hawk in the Nest, a compilation of folk, Americana and R&B music with storytelling.

For this, he is performing as Hawk in the Nest and has put together a band.

The community holiday event on Dec. 13 is part of the Israeli Culture Series. It is a partnership with adult programming and Kids Night Out so the community can take a break from the hectic holiday season and listen to live music, drink delicious Israeli wine and enjoy traditionally decorated sufganiyot from local Israeli Bakery,

Navad. There will also be baskets with products from Israeli businesses that will be available to win with purchased raffle tickets!

This event is 21+ and preregistration is required. However, the children, grades K-5, can register for an Israeli-themed Kids Night Out where they will fill their own sufganiyot and enjoy activities including dinner and a movie.

Legacy giving is flourishing at Temple Emanu-El

Pellegri made her comments during the second annual Temple Emanu-El Dor L’Dor Society Brunch on Nov. 16.

Launched in 2024, the temple’s Dor L’Dor Society already has more than two dozen member households, with many more in the process of making planned gifts to the shul.

“We all can play a part in this,” Senior Rabbi Michael Fel said during his opening remarks. “Our congregation is thriving today, and we can help ensure that vitality for many years to come through legacy giving.”

Several speakers added personal perspectives on why they’ve made legacy gifts to the temple.

Temple President Jeff Levy spoke about discovering his “spiritual home” at Temple Emanu-El and how he and his wife, Rachel, chose to make a legacy gift so that future generations could experience the same sense of belonging, community and opportunity that has meant so much to them.

Two of the newest members of the Legacy Giving Society, Toby and Moshe Liebowitz, spoke about tending to their family needs first and then making provisions for the shul in their estate plans. “The Temple means so much to us,” Toby said, “and we wanted to do something special to honor our connection to the community.”

The program on Nov. 16 honored current members of the Dor L’Dor Society, welcomed aboard new members and provided information for all congregants who are considering the idea of making a legacy gift.

The theme for this year’s event was “anyone can make a legacy gift.” As Development Associate Naydine Rock said in her closing remarks, “As it says in Proverbs 13:22, we all should be thinking about leaving an inheritance for our children’s children.”

Why your support matters now more than ever before

I

n recent weeks, Rhode Island has been shaken by a deeply troubling incident involving a Jewish freshman on the Smithfield High School football

team. According to reports, the student was locked in a bathroom, sprayed with disinfectant and subjected to antisemitic slurs by fellow teammates.

THE JEWISH ALLIANCE of Greater Rhode Island (the Alliance) and the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center (SBHEC) immediately condemned the incident and called for full accountability. The school district initially suspended the students from the team, but the players were reinstated shortly after – a decision that community leaders say sends a dangerous message that antisemi-

tism can be minimized and that consequences for such actions are not guaranteed.

The Alliance and SBHEC have continued to press for transparency and meaningful action. Working closely with the victim’s family, it has urged the district to adopt mandatory anti-bias education and expand professional development for school staff. The Alliance and SBHEC have held press conferences, mobilized

community support and emphasized to leaders that antisemitism has no place in the state.

The incident in Smithfield reflects a wider trend. From Jan. 1 to Nov. 13, 2025, the Alliance received 38 reports of antisemitic incidents – excluding those reported directly to law enforcement or other agencies, including the ADL. During the same period last year, 29 incidents were reported, marking an increase of more than 39%. Nationally, the ADL’s 2024 audit documented 9,354 antisemitic incidents across the United States, the highest number on record, driven in part by a rise in incidents related to Israel or Zionism.

Against this backdrop, the Jewish Alliance Community Campaign remains one of the most effective

tools for combating hate and strengthening Jewish life in Rhode Island. Contributions support key initiatives, including:

Sisterhood hosts successful holiday, craft show at Temple Torat Yisrael

BY ELAINE SHAPIRO EAST GREENWICH – The Sisterhood of Temple Torat Yisrael held its annual Holiday and Craft Show today, filling the social hall with color, creativity and community spirit.

The event featured 27 talented vendors, offering everything from handcrafted jewelry, home décor and seasonal gifts to specialty foods and unique art pieces.

Shoppers turned out in great numbers, creating a lively and festive atmosphere throughout the day.

One of the highlights of the event was the Sisterhood’s bake sale, featuring a tempting array of homemade cookies, cakes, pastries and other sweet treats lovingly prepared by temple members.

The bake sale was a major hit — with many visitors leaving not only with gifts for family and friends, but also with delicious desserts to take home.

The Sisterhood reported a wonderful response from the community, both in attendance and enthusiasm.

Proceeds from the event will help support future temple programs, social events and community outreach efforts.

“The turnout was fantastic,” said one of the Sisterhood organizers. “It was heartwarming to see so many people shopping, visiting and supporting one another. Events like this really showcase the strength and warmth of our temple community.”

As the holiday season begins, the Sisterhood’s Holiday and Craft Show was a beautiful reminder that local talent, friendship and generosity make the season truly special.

Second Temple Judaism subject of next Delve Deeper course

BY LARRY KATZ THE PERIOD from 600 BCE to 200 CE was the most crucial in forming Judaism as we know it today. This was the transition period from Biblical Judaism to the Judaism of the Rabbis.

This is the time of the Babylonian and Persian empires, as well as those of Alexander the Great and of Rome and Parthia. During this period, many Jews returned to the Land of Israel from Babylon, but Jewish communities existed as minorities there and in Egypt, other parts of the Mideast, and even in Rome. They had to create their own identities while living among pagan cultures.

Even in the Land of Israel, they had to confront many foreign influences, especially Hellenism, leading to the revolt of the Maccabees and civil war even among their descendants. Eventually, the Romans destroyed the Second Temple, and Jews had to further develop a religion without the Temple as its focus.

The final centuries of this period included many varied groups, such as the Essenes, Sadducees, Pharisees, Zealots and the early Christians.

Everyone who would like to understand this crucial period in Jewish history better can join the next Delve Deeper class, which will take place on Zoom on Thursday evenings, beginning January 29. This course examines the diverse forms of Judaism that emerged in what is called the Second Temple Period – about 539 BCE to 200 CE. We will read primary texts written during this period and examine questions like: What did ancient Jews believe in?

What kinds of texts did they produce? How did they organize their lives and societies?

What kinds of theological and political questions did they debate? How do modern scholars and communities continue to interpret and find meaning in the Second

Temple period?

The instructor is Dr. Sara Ronis, Ph.D., an associate professor at St. Mary’s University, where she teaches Hebrew Bible and its reception, religious studies, and theology. Her book, “Demons in the Details: Demonic Discourse and Rabbinic Culture in Late Antique Babylonia” (2022), explores how the rabbis of late antiquity imagined, feared, and controlled demons. Her current project explores how ancient Jews thought about fetal personhood in a wide range of legal contexts. ‘Antisemite of the Year’ finalists include Tucker Carlson, Ms. Rachel

BY ANDREW LAPIN (JTA) – Nick Fuentes says he feels snubbed by the controversial activist group StopAntisemitism, which neglected to include him among its finalists for “Antisemite of the Year.”

The group’s finalists, announced Sunday [Nov. 30], include conservative pundit Tucker Carlson, whose friendly interview with Fuentes has splintered the conservative movement.

Other “nominees” include pro-Palestinian celebrities Ms. Rachel, Cynthia Nixon and Marcia Cross; mixedmartial-arts athlete and Holocaust denier Bryce Mitchell; two personalities associated with left-wing network The Young Turks; and social media personalities on both the far left (Guy Christensen) and far right (Stew Peters).

Followers are encouraged to vote for whomever they feel is most deserving.

But Fuentes himself, the openly white nationalist and antisemitic livestreamer whose “groyper” movement has gained a toehold this year among young Republicans, was left off.

“Why wasn’t I nominated for antisemite of the year,” Fuentes posted on X after the finalists were revealed, apparently wounded by the omission.

In a follow-up post, StopAntisemitism said it does not nominate people more than once and has nominated Fuentes in previous years.

“While he was a finalist a few years back, his absence from this year’s cycle does not erase his antisemitism.

Rather, it allows us to focus attention on other individuals who are spreading hate,” the group wrote.

A watchdog presence with more than 300,000 followers on X, StopAntisemitism regularly mobilizes against activists and social media posts.

The group has faced criticism for what some perceive as an inordinate focus on Muslim personalities, pro-Palestinian

actions and non-prominent individuals. Its defenders deny that, pointing out that StopAntisemitism also regularly spotlights neo-Nazis and Holocaust deniers on the right.

“From downplaying white supremacy to promoting the antisemitic ‘great replacement’ theory, Carlson has built a career turning extremist dog whistles into broadcast-ready talking points, legitimizing voices that traffic in Holocaust revisionism, conspiracy and hate,” StopAntisemitism wrote in its nomination of Carlson.

The group nominated Ms. Rachel, the children’s YouTube personality who has become an outspoken advocate for children affected by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, because it said she “has used her massive platform to spread Hamas-aligned propaganda.” A left-wing group, Jews for Racial & Economic Justice, has defended Ms. Rachel, saying StopAntisemitism targeted her for expressing sympathy with Palestinians.

Nixon was nominated for her “BDS activism” (she was listed in a film‑industry petition boycotting Israeli film institutions and has been outspoken about civilian casualties in Gaza); Mitchell and Peters, meanwhile, have embraced open Holocaust denial.

Last year’s “winner,” farright pundit and conspiracy theorist Candace Owens, was also absent despite her recent resurgence promoting conspiracy theories accusing Israel of involvement in Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

Previous “winners” have included Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, as well as rapper Ye and a board chair of Ben & Jerry’s, the progressive ice cream company founded by Jews.

Since its inception in 2019, the “award” has always gone to a person of color.

Judge orders U Florida to readmit law student

BY GRACE GILSON (JTA) – A University of Florida law school student who posted that Jews must be “abolished by any means necessary” on social media was ordered to be readmitted to the school by a federal judge last week.

The student, Preston Damsky, was banned from the campus for three years in April after he posted dozens of antisemitic and xenophobic statements to his X account. He also drew attention for having won an award for an academic paper where he argued that the Constitution applies solely to white people.

Damsky then sued the school in September, arguing that his expulsion violated his First Amendment rights.

In a ruling last week, Chief U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor in Talla-

hassee granted a preliminary injunction ordering Damsky to be readmitted to the law school, writing that the school had failed to prove that Damsky’s speech constituted a real threat to the University of Florida.

“The University, of course, has an interest in maintaining order, but it has no interest in violating the First Amendment to achieve that goal,” wrote Winsor in his ruling.

Damsky’s lawyer, Anthony Sabatini, called the ruling a “HUGE First Amendment win” in a post on X, writing that he had been “unlawfully punished in response to his poltical opinions.”

The University of Florida told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that it does not comment on pending litigation. The school is permitted to appeal the rul-

ing, which ordered Damsky be returned to normal standing no later than this past Monday. A trial in the lawsuit is set for May. In a statement posted on Instagram last week, the University of Florida Hillel expressed concern over the ruling, writing that the school “must be a safe space where Jewish students, and all students, can live and learn free from threats of hateful and antisemitic violence.”

The statement continued, “UF Hillel is deeply concerned about the recent court ruling that disregards violent threats made toward the Jewish community and hopes the University of Florida administration will take all necessary legal steps to protect the campus community from those who would threaten to harm it.”

Finding the light this winter at the JCC

BY NATALIE LYALIN AS THE DAYS SHORTEN and winter settles in, it’s natural to feel our energy dip. Less sunlight, colder mornings, and packed schedules can leave us feeling a little dimmer than we’d like.

But this season also gives us an invitation: to cultivate our own sources of light and resilience. And one of the most reliable ways to do that is through movement, community and the willingness to try something new.

At the Dwares Jewish Community Center in Providence, we see every day how trying something new can spark energy. Members who step into a different class often leave feeling lighter, more confident and more connected. If you’re looking for a place to start, there are great options across the building. Try the Monday AquaFit, taught by AT, at 6:30 a.m.

Emily O’Connor, director of aquatics, calls it “the perfect way to start your week strong – get in the water, get moving and feel great.” Emily loves seeing members get in the water - you can often find her swimming at 6 a.m., chanting the following quote to herself “Winter swimming – where thermometers become irrelevant and

courage reigns supreme.”

On land, Zumba with Maria on Tuesdays brings joyful music and movement that lifts the entire room. And for those seeking welcoming, adaptable movement, our weekday 11 a.m. senior-friendly classes provide supportive options for everybody.

This season, our wellness team is also sharing what helps them stay connected to movement in the winter months. From Rob Castellucci, director of fitness operation, “Many

folks shift gears and focus more on strength exercises during the colder months of the year when outdoor exercise, such as running, walking or jogging, aren’t as enjoyable.

This is great, and strength exercise should always be factored into a balanced workout routine. However, we must remember that our heart is an important muscle as well, and we must continue to train it through cardiovascular exercise. If you’re one of the folks who hates getting on a treadmill, elliptical, rower, etc., then try mixing it up and doing intervals instead of steady state cardio. I find it fun to make a little game out of the interval bursts, plus it tends to be more effective and less time consuming to get a quality workout. Also, try one of our new StairClimber machines to really rev up the intensity!”

History Stop the Presses!

IN DECEMBER OF 1961, the Jewish Herald had recently celebrated 32 years in print, and in that time, the newspaper’s headquarters had already moved three times. Now it would migrate a fourth time, to a tiny side street in Pawtucket called Herald Way, right off Webster Street. Not only did the editorial staff have to settle into new offices, but they had to relocate their massive printing presses as well. The new building boasted more space and ample parking, which were both a relief at the time. Packing and unpacking were meticulously scheduled, so the Herald would still be delivered to subscribers without interruption.

OBITUARIES Manuel Arndt, 86

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Manuel Metz Arndt, of Providence, passed away on Oct. 20, 2025, at Briarcliffe Gardens in Johnston. He was the loving husband of Margarita (Baer) Metz. Born in Santiago, Chile, he was a son of the late Guillermo and Hedi (Arndt) Metz.

Mr. Metz was an economist, working for the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C., for many years before retiring.

A skilled and avid chess player, Manuel also enjoyed photography, woodworking, painting and playing tennis, but especially enjoyed time spent with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Ricardo Metz and his wife, Jacqueline Scott, of Northampton, Massachusetts; Guillermo Metz, of Ithaca, New York; and Tamara Metz and her husband, Samuel Connolly, of Providence; one brother, Gustavo Metz Arndt and his wife, Beatrice, of Santiago, Chile; and six grandchildren, Sam, Mia, Aidan and June Metz, and Sebastian and Rachel Connolly.

Ann Bazar, 81

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Ann G. Bazar, lifetime Providence resident, entered eternal rest on Nov. 14, 2025, at HopeHealth Hospice Center in Providence with loved ones by her side.

Born Ann G. Goldsmith, to the late Howard I. and Louise (Allen), Ann answered to many names over the years.

To Hope High School’s Class of ‘63 she was “Red” though she just as proudly answered to friend, wife, Mom, Annie and Miss Fire Prevention (1970). Professionally, Ann spent 33 years at Imperial Pearl, a division of the Bazar group, where colleagues and customers alike referred to her as “the best of the best,” a reputation she upheld until her retirement in 2016. A devoted Providence Journal reader and avid sports fan, she never skipped the newspaper’s sports section. The pro-athlete gossip columns, however, fueled her uncanny ability to predict game-day outcomes. (Pete Rose who?)

Ann’s red hair made her blue eyes pop, but it was her love of dogs, music, friends and family that made them sparkle.

The legendary stories of her and her late husband of 45 years Joseph S. Bazar’s antics will be passed down by her children, Todd Bazar and his wife, Barbara, of Rumford, and Kerri Brennan and her husband, Michael, of Newport Richey, Florida; as well as her brother, Brian Goldsmith, of Louisville, Kentucky; her grandchildren, Erin Gavin, Dayna Iocco and her husband, Rob, and Cecilia DeRosa; one great-grandson, Vincent Joseph Iocco; her in-laws, Peter, Charlotte, David and Sue Bazar; and Karen and Alan Bergel; and several nieces and nephews.

Ann is now reunited with her beloved daughter, Dayna Bazar, and her brothers, Alan and Steven Goldsmith, who left this life before her.

Charles Hahn, 92

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Charles Wolf Hahn, of Providence, passed away after a long and remarkable life filled with intellect, curiosity, hard work and deep devotion to family.

Born on Oct. 9, 1933, in Newport, Charles spent his youth between Newport and Palm Beach, Florida, traveling with his family as part of his father’s food and grocery business. He graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, where he played trumpet in the marching band and was a proud member of the tennis team. In 1955, he received a BS in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, an achievement that laid the foundation for his seven-decade career.

Charles’ professional life was as varied as it was expansive, including service as a staff sergeant in the US Army Reserve. He began his career working alongside his father in the frozen food business before embarking on a series of entrepreneurial ventures. In the 1960s, he founded Atlas Shoppers World in Milford, Massachusetts, as well as Northern Hardgoods, which would evolve into Vendelco – a venture development firm with interests spanning nuclear energy, television and clothing. Serving as CEO, Charles relished the challenges and opportunities of leading

dynamic enterprises.

In 1980, he returned to the University of Rhode Island to pursue a master’s degree in accounting. He received the second highest grade in the state’s CPA licensing examination. This furthered his career with leadership roles in finance and management, including positions with the Narragansett Shops and the London Harness Company.

For nearly 20 years, Charles served as Chief Financial Officer for Wayne Distributing, a role he held with dedication until just this past September – an extraordinary testament to his work ethic, loyalty and enduring commitment to the field he loved.

While Charles was deeply devoted to his work, his greatest commitment was always to his family. In 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann McCauley, with whom he shared 22 years of marriage until her untimely passing in 1977. Together they raised three sons: Marc (Robin), of Kansas City, Missouri; Jefferey (the late Lorri), of Guilford, Connecticut; and Michael (Elizabeth), of Bend, Oregon.

In the late 1970s, Charles began a loving partnership with Susan Franks Brown, whom he married in 1985, blending their families and extending his devotion to Susan’s daughters: the late Betsy Brown Ruzzi (Joseph), Amy Blau and Judy Stoer (the late Eric). Between their six children, Charles and Susan shared the joy of nine grandchildren: Bradley, Nicholas, Erin, Michael, Rachel, Sara, William, Andrew and Henry.

Charles will be remembered as a man of intellect, humor and discipline. He possessed a mind that was endlessly curious and a personality that delighted in debate, discovery and spirited conversation. He cherished lively dialogue, the exchange of ideas, and staying informed and engaged with the world around him.

He loved the beach, the ocean and the simple joy of being surrounded by family and friends. He was also an avid New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan! His sharp wit, strong opinions and steadfast presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Adrian Horovitz, 93

CRANSTON, R.I. – Adrian Jerome Horovitz, of Oaklawn Avenue, passed away on Nov. 19, 2025, at the Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. He was a devoted husband to the late Deborah (Berman) Horovitz, and they were married for 63 years. Adrian lived in Cranston for 68 years.

Adrian was born in Providence to Morris and Dena (Delerson) Horovitz. He graduated from Hope High School in 1950 and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1954. During the Korean War, he served as an officer in Germany, repairing helicopters and flying them to ensure the repairs were successful.

Adrian owned Harwood Manufacturing in Providence, a costume jewelry and novelty business, and was its president until he retired in 1999. He was also a member and past president of Temple Sinai.

Adrian was a devoted father to Amy Panzer and her husband, Andrew, of Wellington, Florida, and to Jeffrey Horovitz and his wife, Kathleen, of Cranston. He was the brother of the late David and Maida Horovitz, and a loving grandfather to Melissa Silverman and her husband Matthew, Jarett Rockwerk, Jacob Horovitz, and Joshua Horovitz. He will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him.

Howard London, 82

BOYTON BEACH, FLA. – Howard A. London died on Nov. 1, 2025, surrounded by family.

Affectionately known as “Howie,” he was the beloved husband of the late Elaine (Goldberg) London and Alva (Gerstein) London, of Boca Raton, Florida. Born in Providence, the son of the late David and Evelyn (Blazer) London, he had lived in East Greenwich for over 15 years, previously living in Cranston.

He was a member of Temple Sinai, Touro Fraternal Association and Redwood Lodge of the Masons. Always a practical jokester to all who knew him, he loved being on the water boating and fishing in Narragansett Bay and Florida. His pride and joy was watching and supporting everything his grandchildren participated in. He was known as the king of “DIY,” and there wasn’t a project he wouldn’t tackle.

He was the devoted father of Andrew London and his wife, Jill, of Natick, Massachusetts; and Dr. Robert London and his wife, Caryn, of Coral Springs, Florida. He was the loving stepfather of Jill Krueger, of North Kingstown; Lawrence Portman, of Westport, Connecticut; and Audrey Samara, of Parkland, Florida. He was the dear brother of Jerome London, of Lincoln, and Melvin London, of Narragansett. He was the proud Papa of Emily, Samantha, Joshua, Elliot and Julia; and step-grandfather of Lauren, Stephanie, Jack, Henry, Hannah, Eden, Jonah and Romi.

Anita Redlich, 90

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Anita Redlich passed away on Nov. 24, 2025, at Tockwotton on the Waterfront. She was the beloved wife of the late Leonard Redlich. Born in Bronx, New York, the daughter of the late Albert and Anita (Berman) Friedman. She lived in East Providence the last three years, although she considered Newport her home, where she resided for 42 years.

Anita had an MSW and was a mental health counselor with her own practice, Prevention Counseling Services, in Newport and East Providence for over 30 years, retiring in 2013. She was a founding member of Women’s Resource Center of Newport and was a volunteer for Reading is Fundamental. Anita was always ready to help those in need.

She was also an avid reader and loved writing poetry, short stories and personal journaling.

She was the devoted

mother of Ried Redlich (Mindy) of Cumberland, Debbie Spitz (Eran) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Michelle Wasserman (Jeff) of Wilmington, Delaware and Seth Redlich of Columbia. She was the exceptional mother-in-law to Leonard Katzman and Kathy Redlich both of Portsmouth.

She was the loving grandmother of Adam Wasserman (Stephanie), Robin Miller (Trevor), Andrew Katzman, Sarah Shore (Jason), Alex Slattery (Dalton), Alysa Shtaynberger (Jonathan) and Colin Redlich. She was the cherished great-grandmother of Danielle and Jeremy Wasserman, Lukas and Hannah Miller, and Hannah and Emma Shtaynberger.

Aside from her husband and parents, Anita is predeceased by her daughter, Jhodi Redlich.

Barbara Segal

WAYLAND, MASS. – Barbara Kopel Segal passed peacefully on Monday evening, Nov. 10, 2025, with her treasured family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Philip A. Segal, Jr. for 75 loving years. Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Hilda Kopel and sister of the late Marion Kopel Pear.

She had lived in Cranston for 69 years, previously living in Belmont, Massachusetts. For Barbara’s last three years, she lived with her cherished daughter, Joan Segal, in Wayland.

Barbara was a devoted mother of James Segal and his partner, Gail Sullivan, of Woburn, Massachusetts; Joan Segal, of Wayland, Massachusetts; and Adam Segal and his wife, Julie, of Ellington, Connecticut.

She was a loving grandmother of Jennifer and her husband, Brian, and grandsons, Michael, Spencer and Joshua. She was a cherished great-grandmother of Maiya, Brielle and William. Barbara was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Cheryl Segal.

She was a graduate of Wheelock College with a BS in Education and went on to teach at Beaver Day School and in the Cranston elementary school system. She continued her career working

for nonprofits – Travelers Aid Society, Volunteers in Action Opportunities for Women and Director of Volunteers at RIARC serving the needs of mentally challenged citizens in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.

Barbara was a founding member of Temple Sinai. She was a supporter of the RI Philharmonic Orchestra and Trinity Repertory Theater and a proud member of the Jewish Community Center.

Barbara also was an avid tennis player, bridge player and world traveler with her husband Phil.

Samuel Vilker, 83

BOCA RATON, FLA. – Samuel Martin Vilker died on Nov. 17, 2025, at his home in Boca Raton. He was the beloved husband of Nancy J. (Priest) Vilker for 60 years. Born in Providence, a son of the late Louis and Lillian (Schwartz) Vilker, he had lived in Boca Raton for roughly 10 years, previously living in Cranston and West Warwick for many years.

He was a devoted teacher with the Providence Public School system until he retired in 2000. He also served the students at Congregation Beth Torah’s Hebrew High School for 10 years as its principal. Samuel was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.

He was the devoted father of Lee Vilker (and his wife Ronitte), of East Greenwich; and Beth Samreny, of Boca Raton, Florida. He was the dear brother of Nathan Vilker; Sylvia Resnick (Frank), of Cranston; Anne Goldstein (Alden), of Worcester, Massachusetts; and Adele (late). He was the loving grandfather of Eitan, Ari, Daniel and Justin.
