ABOUT JUVENTAS Juventas New Music Ensemble is a contemporary chamber group with a special focus on emerging voices. Juventas shares classical music as a vibrant, living art form. We bring audiences music from a diverse array of composers that live in today’s world and respond to our time.

Since its founding in 2005, Juventas has performed the music of over 200 living composers. The ensemble has earned a reputation as a curator with a keen eye for new talent. It opens doors for composers with top-notch professional performances that present their work in the best possible light.

Recognition for the ensemble’s work includes the American Prize Ernst Bacon Award for Performance of American Music and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Boston Foundation. Juventas is featured on albums by Innova Recordings, Parma Records and New Dynamic Records, and has held residencies at Boston Conservatory, Harvard University, Longy School of Music, Middlebury College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Juventas has a storied history of dynamic collaboration with artists in other media, including dancers, painters, scientists, poets, puppeteers and robotics engineers. A leader in the field, Juventas also facilitates the Boston New Music Festival, a weeklong showcase of Boston’s contemporary music scene.

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Like an all-star baseball team, each of Juventas’s ensemble members is an incredible talent in their own right.

Our annual Center Stage program features one of Juventas’s ten core ensemble members in a solo concert.

In our typical programs, our musicians perform together in larger chamber configurations that center on collaborative chemistry. By contrast, tonight’s special program brings Clarinetist Wolcott Humphrey to the fore, showcasing his virtuosity and grace.

Wolcott is the consummate artist. His soulful tone melts my heart every time. His technical talent is extraordinary, such that even the most challenging passages seem to flow effortlessly. And last but not least, Wolcott’s kindness shines through every piece he touches.

This is Wolcott’s ninth season performing with Juventas and we couldn’t be more proud to have him in the Juventas family.

FROM THE SOLOIST I’ve curated tonight’s concert as the program that I personally would want to listen to if I were sitting next to you in the audience. These selections highlight the breadth of great music written for clarinet recently by living composers.

Oliver first approached me about doing a solo concert with Juventas back in August of 2019. My initial idea was to base the program around music representing my ancestral background, performing pieces by composers from different countries that make up my family tree. After 2020, that seems like a lifetime ago.

When the pandemic hit, I completely re-envisioned the program, focusing on pieces that truly speak to my core.

Thinking about social issues, such as the critical Black Lives Matter movement, I want to share music that draws from not only a diverse range of musical voices, but of lived experiences. And so I curated this new program, which I’m excited to share with you tonight. In homage to my Dutch heritage, I kept one piece from the original program, Garden of Love by JacobTV. With everything that is going on right now, I’m so grateful that I can still connect with you through the safety and comfort of your living room. I hope you enjoy the music!

IN THE COMPOSERS’ OWN WORDS Theresa Martin Paragon I first discovered the term paragone while reading a book about the science of competitiveness. In the Italian Renaissance, paragone was the idea of competition between creative artists: painters, musicians, and sculptors. They believed that only through paragone could you see the real significance of a work. Artists trained side-by-side in direct competition and often debated over which of the creative endeavors was the most worthy.

In modern times, the English term paragon has come to mean a model or pattern of excellence, an ideal or standard. This is where my inspiration was fully ignited.

I wanted to write a piece that, in my mind, outlined the perfect life. It would begin with birth and a soul being surrounded by love, move through phases of learning, joy, amusement, and adventure, and would come back full circle to all-encompassing love into a peaceful departure from this world.

Paragon has personal significance for me, as well.

During the course of writing the piece, a relative of mine passed away from cancer at age 62. No one knows how much time we will have on this earth.

Paragon is my shared hope for the ideal life, full of meaning, love, and joy. Paragon was commissioned

by Caitlin Poupard as part of her doctoral dissertation at Arizona State University.

JacobTV Garden of Love The Garden of Love for oboe or soprano sax and soundtrack, based on a poem by William Blake, was composed in March 2002. In 2003 the oboe part was arranged for soprano sax. Then Margaret Lancaster tried it on flute, which worked very well too, and later on it was adapted for alto recorder and Bb clarinet as well.

I usually compose my music based on the melody of speech. So when Dutch oboist Bart Schneemann asked me to write a piece based on a poem by William Blake, I had a problem: There is obviously no recording of Blake’s voice, since he lived in the early 19th century. But then I discovered an old recording of “The Garden of Love,” recited by a typical stiff upper lip British actor. Then, the piece almost wrote itself: I created an archaic atmosphere by adding a harpsichord and all kinds of rare birds (an ornithologist could have fun with it). Garden of Love is a typical example of how I usually work: composing intuitively, playing with words and sounds, and using the speech melody as the leitmotiv for the composition. The soloist is in a dialogue with the poem and the birds in this imaginary garden…

James Lee III Ad Anah?

The title Ad Anah is ancient Hebrew and it means “How long?” or “Until When?”and it is a reference to the ancient Hebrew prophet Habakkuk asking God “How long, O LORD, must I call out for help but You do not hear, or cry out to You, Violence!, but You do not save?” Job and king David also cried out against violence and the desire for justice. My work Ad Anah? is a humble cry against injustice in our day and the clarinet specifically expresses this lament and cry “How Long?” throughout the composition.

Jörg Widmann Fantasie for Solo Clarinet Fantasie for Solo Clarinet is my first real piece for my own instrument, the clarinet. It is largely based on the usual Romantic melodious sound, though with ironic side trips into dance, klezmer, and jazz, making Fantasie the clarinet’s equivalent of ‘light music.’ With its eccentric virtuosity and its cheerful, fundamentally ironic character, it reflects Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet of 1919 and the tonal innovations that appeared with Carl Maria von Weber’s notation for the clarinet, and takes them further in a new way.

Fantasie is a little imaginary scene uniting the dialogues of different people in close proximity in the spirit of the commedia dell’arte.

Sonata for Clarinet and Piano has three contrasting yet closely related movements. While not overtly programmatic, the sonata’s thematic materials arose after the painful losses of loved ones in 2014 and 2015. The nostalgic first movement begins with a sweetly mellifluous opening melody contrasted by a playful secondary theme. The youthful, innocent quality found in the first movement transforms in the short second movement to a more immediate emotional space colored by sadness and loss. The final movement transforms the material from the opening movement into an insistent dance full of dark, agitated energy. Sonata for Clarinet and Piano was composed for clarinetist Benjamin Fingland, who premiered it at Rutgers University with Harberg at the piano in 2015. Mvt. 3 - “A Balkan Dance” Influenced by Macedonian and Bulgarian dance idioms, the movement features many references to the folk music of this region of the Balkans.

On the other side of the tall resort walls is a different side of Mexico where the roads remain unpaved and the roofs on local homes are made of tin. At a neighborhood restaurant, a local favorite, my 24-year-old self naively orders the pancakes that, to my surprise, taste more like carne asada.

Nikola Resanovic alt.music.ballistix Bearing a title suggestive of a fictitious internet news group, alt.music.ballistix is an electro-acoustic composition scored for solo clarinet and CD, which I composed for Professor Hakan Rosengren in fall of 1995. The 12-minute work is divided into four contiguous movements as follows: Mvt. 1 - “A Matter of Fax” A three-minute sonic montage featuring original samples from various technological source, including a fax/modem, telephone, short-wave radio, satellite transmissions, mingled with the most precious of all musical commodities - anticipatory silence!

Mvt. 2 - “A Soliloquy” A three-minute, 11-tone, unaccompanied clarinet solo

Mvt. 4 - “Convolution@uakron.edu” The above three movements are polyphonically combined, and a fourth element - the unrelentingly polite voice-mail lady - is injected into the sonic recipe.

“Ballistix” is a musical representation of some of the bizarre realities of our modern era of digital communications and information. It is the metaphor of the seemingly backwards peasant down-loading the latest nasdaq figures via his cell phone/modem onto his lap-top computer in some remote region of the Balkans - his cows grazing in the background. This juxtaposition of the modern and the timeless, the sophisticated and the simple, the sublime and the ridiculous, expresses itself in a music which combines accordion, tambourine and modem. “Ballistix” is convolved music: it takes musical events that seems isolated and unrelated at their first presentation and restates them in a contrapuntally intertwined manner.

In this news context, these same musical events are transformed by their very interaction as they combine to reveal a higher order of relationships.

The beaches are gorgeous and the tides recede hundreds of feet every night, as if by magic, revealing the

As night falls, the local spirits emerge and the town comes alive. The moon hangs low, peeking around buildings, always just out of sight. Taxi drivers take wild shortcuts through dark and dusty side streets. Our ears, beaten by someone named Mr. Saxobeat, are somehow still able to hear the meditative hum of neon lights buzzing quietly like mosquitoes. It doesn’t take long to fall under the town’s spell.

The ghosts of this unfamiliar territory swirl around us, dizzying our senses, as we enter a world of strangers.

Our taxi driver watches us from his beat-up little Nissan—perhaps he and the moon have been appointed our guardian angels for the night. Still, we continue on into the darkness if for no other reason than because we have no idea where we are or how to get back home.

His reality opera THE NEWS was constantly updated between 2010 and 2016 and performed by ensembles in Chicago, Rome, Amsterdam, Tokyo, LA, Hamburg New York and the Netherlands.

JacobTV was the first composer to receive the BUMA Classical Award, as the best Dutch classical export product in 2015.

b. 1973 Amanda Harberg strives to find emotional and spiritual meaning through music. Composer John Corigliano says of her music, “Amanda Harberg writes truly beautiful music. This is rare in our time in fact, in any time. She touches the soul and invigorates the brain. I love her work.” In 2021, the Philadelphia Orchestra will present the world premiere of Harberg’s Piccolo Concerto with renowned artist Erica Peel and conducted by Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin as part of their Digital Stage series in 2021. Harberg’s many commissions include those from the Philadelphia Orchestra Association, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Albany Symphony’s Dogs of Desire, the Juilliard School, the Bay Atlantic Symphony, the New York Youth Symphony, the Dorian Wind Quintet, and the Philadelphia Network for New Music. Additionally, Harberg has received numerous consortium commissions leading to award winning music that has been performed by many of the world’s leading soloists.

b. 1951 Dutch ‘avant pop’ composer JacobTV (Jacob Ter Veldhuis,1951) started as a rock musician and studied composition and electronic music with Luctor Ponse and Willem Frederik Bon; he received the Composition Prize of the Netherlands in 1980 and is a a full time composer ever since. He soon made a name for himself with melodious compositions, straight from the heart and with great effect. ‘I pepper my music with sugar,’ he says. The press has called him the ‘Andy Warhol of new music’ and his ‘coming-out’ as a composer of ultra-tonal, mellifluous music reached a climax with the video oratorio Paradiso (2001) based on Dante’s Divina Commedia. Michael Markowski is fully qualified to watch movies and cartoons. In 2010, he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in ‘Film Practices’ from Arizona State University. While Markowski never studied music in college, he has studied privately with his mentors, Jon Gomez, Dr. Karl Schindler, and Michael Shapiro. He has continued this education by participating in a number of extracurricular programs, such as The Art of Orchestration with Steven Scott Smalley (2008), the National Band Association’s Young Composer and Conductor Mentorship Project (2008), and the NYU/ASCAP Foundation’s Film Scoring Workshop (2014) where he was named one of ASCAP’s Film & TV “Composers to Watch.” Mark Snow, composer of The X-Files and one of the workshop’s guest mentors, says Michael’s music was “extremely sophisticated” and “complimented the mood and emotion of the scene with unusual maturity and sensitivity.” Most recently, Markowski was invited to join the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop (2015) as a composer and lyricist.

Theresa Martin is an internationally recognized composer of energetic, melodious, and rhythmically driven music who often draws her inspiration from literature, images, nature, and personal experiences.

She enjoys writing music for soloists, chamber groups and large ensembles, and has been commissioned by internationally prominent soloists including clarinet virtuoso Robert Spring, as well as organizations such as the Barnett Foundation of Chicago, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, the Arizona Wind Symphony, the Kairos Trio, Eufonix Tuba-Euphonium Quartet, the 10th and Broadway Clarinet Quartet, the University of Wisconsin Fox Valley Concert Band, and the Arizona State University Wind Ensemble. She has been awarded recognition by the American Composer’s Forum, ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer’s Competition, and NACUSA Young Composer’s Competition.

Her music has been performed throughout the United States at conferences such as the ICA Clarinetfest, IDRS, and the TMEA Convention and the CBDNA National Conference in 2019, as well as in recitals and conferences in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Luxembourg, Sweden, Spain, China, Taiwan, Tanzania and the UAE. Studying both composition and clarinet performance, she received her DMA in composition at the University of Michigan and

Born in Derby, England in 1955, Nikola Resanovic is of Serbian heritage and has lived in the United States since 1966. He is a graduate of the University of Akron, School of Music (BM 77, MM 79) where he studied Composition with David S. Bernstein, and the Cleveland Institute of Music (DMA 81) where he studied Composition with Donald Erb. A recipient of the 2003 Cleveland Arts Prize, Nikola Resanovic is presently Professor of Music at the University of Akron where he has taught music Composition and Theory since 1983. In addition, he supervises the school’s Electronic Music Facility which he designed and implemented.

JÖRG WIDMANN

b. 1973 Jörg Widmann is one of Germany’s most sought-after composers and a virtuoso clarinetist. String quartets form the core of his oeuvre: String Quartet no. 1, followed by Choralquartett and Jagdquartett, which was premiered by the Arditti Quartet in 2003. The series was completed in 2005 by String Quartet no.

4 and Quartet no. 5 with soprano, Versuch über die Fuge (Attempt at a Fugue). The five string quartets are intended as a large cycle, with each individual work following a traditional form of setting. Widmann has composed a trilogy of works (Lied, Chor, and

Messe) for large orchestra on the transformation of vocal forms for instrumental forces. In 2007 Christian Tetzlaff and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie gave the premiere of Widmann’s first Violin Concerto. The same year, Pierre Boulez and the Vienna Philharmonic gave the first performance of Armonica for orchestra; it combines the tonal colors of a glass harmonica above the orchestra to produce a homogeneously breathing body of sounds and sound effects. Widmann’s music theatre project Am Anfang was the result of a collaboration with visual artist Anselm Kiefer; Widmann created the work together with Kiefer and conducted the world premiere on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Opéra Bastille in Paris.

This season baritone Christian Gerhaher gave the premiere of Widmann’s new song cycle for baritone and piano at the Wiener Konzerthaus, and the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln premieres his Labyrinth Cycle under the baton of Emilio Pomàrico. He also holds residencies at various festivals including Grafenegg, Rheingau and the Mozartfest Würzburg. He has been composer-in-residence of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vienna Konzerthaus.

A professor at the Freiburg Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Widmann studied with Wilfried Hiller and Hans Werner Henze, and later Heiner Goebbels and Wolfgang Rihm in Karlsruhe. Widmann was the 2008-09 recipient of the Elise L. Stoeger Prize, which is awarded by the Chamber Music Society in recognition of significant contributions to the field of chamber music.

Clarinetist Wolcott Humphrey, originally from western New York, earned a B.M. in Clarinet Performance from Ithaca College in 2006, and went on to earn an M.M. and a Graduate Diploma in Clarinet Performance from the New England Conservatory in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Wolcott has studied clarinet with E. Michael Richards, Richard Faria, William Wrzesien, and Craig Nordstrom.

Humphrey is passionate about new music, and has performed in contemporary chamber

ensembles in Ithaca, Providence (Ensemble Parallax), and Boston (Juventas and Sound Icon) as well as at the Charles E. Gamper Festival of Contemporary Music. He was also in the premiere performance of White Snake Projects’ comic opera REV. 23 in Boston.

Humphrey was the principal clarinetist of the Salt Lake Symphonic Winds, performing Martin Ellerby’s Clarinet Concerto with the group in 2011. While living in Providence, he was the principal clarinetist of Fall River Symphony, the co-principal clarinetist of the American Band, and a member of several woodwind chamber groups.

Humphrey is the assistant principal clarinetist of the Met Winds, performing the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto with the group at the Association of Concert Bands convention in New Jersey and at the Festival of Bands in Boston.

Humphrey performs with Brookline Symphony, and the chamber ensembles Some Assembly Required and the Kalliope Ensemble. Wolcott has been the core clarinetist of Juventas New Music Ensemble since 2012.

JULIA SCOTT CAREY piano

Julia Scott Carey began her music training at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, where she received the Lanier Prize for Most Outstanding Graduating Senior. She was one of the first students admitted to the Harvard-NEC joint degree program, through which she received a master’s degree in composition. She received a second master’s degree in collaborative piano from Boston University.

Julia is the Minister of Music at the Central Square Congregational Church in Bridgewater, where she leads the adult and children’s choirs from the keyboard. She is one of the accompanists for the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and the Boston Symphony Children’s Choir. She also serves as the accompanist for the Metropolitan Chorale of Brookline, the Dedham Choral Society, the

Boston College University Chorale, and the Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus. She previously served as the pianist for the Handel and Haydn Society’s Educational Vocal Quartet, the Wellesley College Chamber Singers, and the Boston Children’s Chorus. She is also a founder and core ensemble member of Juventas New Music Ensemble.

As a composer, her orchestral works have been performed by numerous orchestras, including the BSO and the Boston Pops, and her works have been broadcast on national TV and radio in the United States and in Russia. She was the youngest composer ever published by the Theodore Presser Company. She was also chosen to arrange a folk song for Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Chang to play at Deval Patrick’s inaugural ball.

She has served as a music director or accompanist for over forty opera and musical theater productions. Productions for which Julia was the music director include Cy Coleman’s City of Angels with the Longwood Players and Alexander Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg with OperaHub. Reviewing a performance Julia conducted of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi with the Hubbard Hall Opera Company, the Berkshire Hudson Arts Review said “the players and singers were not just led, but were energized. Schicchi is a tough score, and Julia stood the test.”

Also passionate about early music, Julia music directed a staged performance of four of Louis-Nicolas Clérambault’s Cantatas with the

Harvard Early Music Society, which was taken on tour to Versailles. She also music directed a performance of John Eccles’ Semele with the same organization. Speaking of her performance as a harpsichordist in the Boston Opera Collaborative’s production of Le nozze di Figaro, the Boston Musical Intelligencer said, “The unwavering harpsichord accompaniment of Julia Carey richly and expressively textured the recitatives.”

Julia currently works as a musicianship teacher and department coordinator at the Suzuki School in Newton. She also taught an undergraduate music theory class at Boston College, served as a keyboard harmony teaching fellow at NEC, and worked as a musical theatre teacher at the Belvoir Terrace Arts Camp and the Boston Children’s Theatre.

Julia lives in Winchester with her husband and her daughter. In addition to music, she loves cooking, running, and spending time on Cape Cod.
