ABOUT JUVENTAS Juventas New Music Ensemble is a contemporary chamber group with a special focus on emerging voices. Juventas shares classical music as a vibrant, living art form. We bring audiences music from a diverse array of composers that live in today’s world and respond to our time.

Since its founding in 2005, Juventas has performed the music of over 200 living composers. The ensemble has earned a reputation as a curator with a keen eye for new talent. It opens doors for composers with top-notch professional performances that present their work in the best possible light.

Recognition for the ensemble’s work includes the American Prize Ernst Bacon Award for Performance of American Music and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Boston Foundation. FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR For our final concert of 2020, we offer you an evening of relaxation. It’s been a long, hard year; I’m sure you don’t need me to list all the many ways. Tonight, we invite you to put aside your troubles for a few hours.

Join all of us at Juventas for a concert of music inspired by autumn and nature.

Amidst these challenging times, nature has been a vital source of respite for so many of us. The natural world offers places where we can calm our minds, see friends safely, and find hope through beauty. Each of the pieces on tonight’s program connects to the earth in its own way and each through a unique musical voice. We hope this music reminds you of your own favorite places, and like the natural world itself, serves as a restorative balm for your heart and soul.

IN THE COMPOSERS’ OWN WORDS Michael Culligan Due Northwest Due Northwest was premiered at Duquesne University on April 12th, 2008 by Michael Culligan and Marie Tachouet. It was originally written for the “Northwest Duo,” consisting of David Bergman, percussion, and Marie Tachouet, flute. The piece opens with an introduction of rhythmic counterpoint on a single note, evolving by adding one pitch at a time. With each note comes new color, and eventually the mode is established, always returning to “F.” This introduction transitions into the main theme in 6/8, featuring a beautiful sustained flute part over a driving marimba accompaniment.

There is a brief 12/8 fragment to introduce new melodic and rhythmic material. This builds to a quick 6/8 section in which the flute and marimba are in canon in rondo form, soaring through all ranges and dynamics, but always returning to the new theme.

Driving accents are present and identical in both parts, but since they are a measure apart, a deep hocket is created. Several quick transpositions follow and build, eventually transitioning back to the A section.

Much like a Da Capo Aria, the theme is played a second time with additional virtuosity and grandeur.

This is present in the flute, presenting the melody and octave higher and with additional technical brilliance.

From a majestic, jubilant state, the piece relaxes and then escalates quickly to and exhilarating send off!

Linda Chase Wildfire Rages, River Whispers, Resilience As long as I can remember there have been fires in California, but the past few years have gotten worse.

In summer 2018, the Scott River sky was thick with smoke almost every day. As I wrote, the fires still burned nearby. I feel a great sense of loss for the places, people and other species. The fire where the smoke originated burned 1,000 homes. Six people died. Scientists have concluded that climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather, lightning strikes, and high winds driving big blazes. This piece reflects on my long relationship with this river, and the uncertain future. Repeated notes in the vibraphone provide a sense of the “constant” ground of life. Spring returns. Morning follows night. The flute interrupts with sudden ripples flowing back down into still pools.

Conceptual dynamic markings ask the performers to imagine the many moods of the river: flowing, reflective, rushing, rapid and still. I walk along the river to listen. How does the river alter my thinking? Humans often assume that we are going to get what we want.

Such fools we are. The wise river receives whatever comes her way, branches on beaches and fires by her shore. In these challenging times of climate change, resilience is necessary through active participation in bringing about what we hope for – what we want to protect – this is what the river whispers.

Ingrid Stölzel The Voice of the Rain Words are the inspirational seeds for much of the music I compose. The Voice of the Rain takes its title and inspiration from Walt Whitman’s poem “The Voice of the Rain” from Leaves of Grass. Whitman beautifully describes the world as an everlasting cyclical process of giving birth to itself and giving back life to its own origin. I was especially drawn to the last line of this

poem where Whitman reveals a deeper truth about the creative process. He equates the everlasting cyclical nature of life, with the creative process, where - like the rain - the creation changes form but is always the same at its core and eventually returns to the poet as love from those who read the words. It is my hope that the music captures the essence of Whitman’s powerful meditation on nature and humanity.

The Voice of the Rain was commissioned as part of a New Music USA Project Grant and written for Sarah Frisof - flute, Hannah Collins - cello and Michael Compitello - percussion.

Commissioned by Jennifer Fischer and her trio, this piece was born out of a fiery, autumnal palette of colors, of fickle October winds and mischievous, scuttling leaves. The second movement speaks to murky harbors and foggy grey skies. There are musical aspects of an Appalachian nature in this piece, as well as techniques borrowed from the tome of minimalism.

All of these qualities are a reflection of me spending my Sundays playing in youth orchestra on the University of Michigan School of Music campus, where this piece was premiered.

Watershed was inspired by a favorite walk along the Mystic River. From the boat launch in Medford Square, just a few blocks from my house, I meander for miles upriver, eventually reaching a series of gleaming lakes. While this urban oasis has provided solace and inspiration for years, in 2020 it became something more: a lifeline. Amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic and the claustrophobia of staying home for extended periods, this green corridor quiets my mind and fills my soul with light. I return over and over again, finding hope in the enduring beauty of the natural world.

Andrew Porter Scenes from an Early Autumn Day I wrote this solo piano piece as a way to break out of a writer’s block I found myself in while working on lyrics and revising the story for a song cycle (currently with the same name). Coincidentally, the song cycle addresses topics related to the highs and lows of being both a young adult and an artist, including finding inspiration and writers block.

Hoping to weave together a prelude here using the same material from my songs, I found the final product was too long.

This piece, to me, is very natural, and hopefully should evoke the various scenes of Autumn within the listener, the setting of the song cycle. It is also very human, and relating to the story, one may also find within the music a sense of meandering, flashes of doubt, feelings of love and romance, the anger and pain of failure, the triumph of success, the bittersweetness of nostalgia, and the fear of not knowing what’s next. This is the first live performance of this piece, virtual or otherwise, and I hope you enjoy it! And thank you Juventas for this opportunity!

Oliver Davis The Elements In Spring 2018 I was approached by the Hanke Brothers who commissioned me to write a work on the theme of the four elements. In Air, I used piano arpeggios in a relatively high register combined with a repetitive rhythmic pattern on the recorder part to convey a light, airborne feel. Water has a slower, more legato, flowing melody which in this arrangement is played by the horn, viola and flute accompanied by the piano. To depict the flames of Fire, I indicated in the score to strum the strings of the piano in an upwards glissando. This was combined with a minor trill in the violin whilst the viola plays pizzicato. With Earth, I wanted to create a more grounded feel so anchored the music with long pedal notes in the horn and used a repeated rhythmic pattern in the viola to propel the music towards its climactic ending. The Hanke Brothers premiered The Elements in Stuttgart on 14 July 2018 and recorded the work the following month at the Alte Ziagrrenfabrik studios, Germany. It has been arranged specifically for Juventas New Music Ensemble.

OLIVER CAPLAN Michigan-born American composer Stephanie Ann Boyd (b. 1990) writes melodic music about women’s memoirs and the natural world for symphonic and chamber ensembles. Her work has been performed in nearly all 50 states and has been commissioned by musicians and organizations in 37 countries. Boyd’s five ballets include works choreographed by New York City Ballet principal dancers Lauren Lovette, Ashley Bouder, NYCB soloist Peter Walker, and XAOC Contemporary Ballet’s Eryn Renee Young.

Eero, a ballet commissioned by Access Contemporary Music and Open House New York, was written for the grand opening of the TWA Hotel at JFK Airport.

Stephanie’s music has been praised as “[with] ethereal dissonances” (Boston Globe), “[music that] didn’t let itself be eclipsed” (Texas Classical Review), “arrestingly poetic” (BMOP), and “wide ranging, imaginative” (Portland Press Herald).

The 2020/2021 season includes commissions from the Wyoming Symphony, Astral Artists with cellist Tommy Mesa, violinist Megan Healy, pianists Lara

Symphony Orchestra, Columbia University Wind Ensemble and New Hampshire Master Chorale, among others. Winner of a Special Citation for the American Prize in Orchestral Composition, additional recognitions include two Veridian Symphony Competition Wins, the Fifth House Ensemble Competition Grand Prize, eight ASCAP Awards, and fellowships at Ragdale, VCCA and the Brush Creek Foundation. Recordings of Mr. Caplan’s music include his 2017 release You Are Not Alone, which has been featured on Apple Music’s Classical A-list and streamed over 200,000 times; 2012 debut album Illuminations; and tracks on Trio Siciliano’s Exploring Music (2018, U07 Records) and the Sinfonietta of Riverdale’s New World Serenade (2016, Albany Records).

A leader in the field of contemporary classical music, Mr. Caplan is the Artistic Director of Juventas New Music Ensemble. Mr. Caplan holds degrees from Dartmouth College and the Boston Conservatory, is a voting member of the Recording Academy, and resides in Medford, Massachusetts.

LINDA CHASE

Award-winning American composer Oliver Caplan writes melodies that nourish our souls, offering a voice of hope in an uncertain world. Inspired by the resiliency of the human spirit and beauty of the natural world, his music celebrates stories of social justice, conservation and community.

Mr. Caplan’s works have been performed in over 175 performances nationwide. He has been commissioned by the Atlanta Chamber Players, Bella Piano Trio, Bronx Arts Ensemble, Brookline

Composer/ flutist Linda J. Chase, Ph.D. weaves elements of jazz, contemporary improvisation, spoken word and other interdisciplinary arts into her chamber music. She was recently commissioned to compose

an oratorio based on Laudato Si’, the encyclical Pope Francis addresses to everyone on earth, to care for our “common home”. Chase is interpreting the text as a call to action through the medium of music. Francis writes:

A native of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Michael was appointed Associate Principal Percussionist of the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestras by Louis Langree in 2015. Prior to this, he served as 2nd percussion in both the West Virginia and Canton Symphonies.

Oliver Davis graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 1994 and has since established himself as a preeminent composer for ballet, film & TV, and the concert hall. His albums on Signum Records have consistently charted highly in the UK Classical Charts and achieved regular airplay, notably on Classic FM and New York radio station WQXR.

“Our goal is not to amass information or to satisfy curiosity, but rather to become painfully aware to dare to turn what is happening to the world into our own personal suffering and thus to discover what each of us can do about it.”

Her previous oratorio The City is Burning was performed by the Contemporary Improvisation Department at New England Conservatory. Based on multi-faith sacred texts The City is Burning musically explores critical challenges of our time, recognizing that feelings of uneasiness might awaken us to respond.

Chase founded and directs the Peace and Justice Arts Café concert series joining music students with local communities for music and conversation. Chase is a member of Landscape Music Composers and has received composition awards from the Japan Foundation, Grand Canyon National Park, Kaji Aso, and the Morris Graves Institute. With poet Jane Hirshfield she collaboratively created and performed Hope is the Hardest Love We Carry. Professor Chase teaches ecomusicology, music and spirituality, and interdisciplinary arts at Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory.

From 2010-2015, Michael performed as a regular extra in the Pittsburgh Symphony, including several tours with performances at Carnegie Hall, the BBC Proms, and the Berlin Philharmonie, among others.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree from Duquesne University where he studied with Pittsburgh Symphony percussionists Chris Allen, Jeremy Branson, Ed Stephan, and Andrew Reamer.

His Master of Music degree is from Temple University where he studied under the tutelage of Alan Abel, Chris Deviney, and Angie Nelson, and he currently teaches at Northern Kentucky University.

In addition to being a proud Decibel Percussion artist, Michael is the owner/founder of Culligan Sticks, a boutique business creating handmade gong and timpani sticks. Off the stage, he can be found on the ice playing defense for the Cincinnati Huns or watching Penguins hockey with his cats Sidney Clawsby and Kris Lefang.

Davis released his debut album ‘Flight’, recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and soloist Kerenza Peacock, in March 2015 to critical acclaim. Since then, he has released four more albums on Signum Records: ‘Seasons’ (October 2015), which included Anno, Davis’ contemporary take on Vivaldi’s Quattro Stagioni; ‘Dance (2016)’, ‘Liberty’ (2018) and ‘Arcadia’ (2019), all recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Davis’ compositions are in high demand in the ballet world, featuring on the international stage with renowned ballet companies such as New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Joffrey Ballet Chicago, Pacific Northwest Ballet & Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Since 2017, Davis has collaborated numerous times with Ballet Met Artistic Director Edwaard Liang. The Infinite Ocean, their first work together, premiered at San Francisco Ballet’s Unbound Festival in April

2018 with a specially commissioned score by Davis.

‘Constant Light’ was their next collaboration, for Ballet West in Salt Lake City, Utah. In September 2019, they premiered a new work at New York City Ballet’s prestigious Fall Fashion Gala, which featured costumes designed by fashion icon Anna Sui. Davis and Laing are currently collaborating on a new work to be premiered by Pacific Northwest Ballet.

ANDREW PORTER

Andrew Porter is a African-American composer and multi-instrumentalist born & based in Brooklyn, New York. As a child he has always shown an affinity towards music. At age 8, he began teaching himself keyboard on a small, 37-key Casio. At age 12, after pressuring his parents for years, he finally began taking lessons on what is now his main instrument, the Saxophone. He dabbled in writing throughout High School, but didn’t seriously start composing until a year into his college career.

In 2017, he was accepted into Brooklyn College’s Conservatory of Music, and began taking composition lessons under the wonderful Polina Nazaykinskaya.

Under her guidance, he began to find his voice as a composer, producing string quartets, chamber works, songs, and solo piano works. Now, at 23 and a

Stölzel’s compositions have been commissioned by leading soloists and ensembles, and performed in concert halls and festivals worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Kennedy Center, Seoul Arts Center, Thailand International Composition Festival, Festival Osmose (Belgium), Vox Feminae Festival (Israel), Dot the Line Festival (South Korea), Ritornello Chamber Music Festival (Canada), Festival of New Music at Florida State (USA), Beijing Modern Music Festival (China), Festival of New American Music (USA), and SoundOn Festival of Modern Music (USA). Her music has been recognized in numerous competitions, among them recently the Suzanne and Lee Ettelson Composer’s Award, Red Note Composition Competition, the Robert Avalon International Competition for

Composers, and the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra Competition. MUSICIANS JULIA SCOTT CAREY piano

Julia Scott Carey began her music training at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, where she received the Lanier Prize for Most Outstanding Graduating Senior. She was one of the first students admitted to the Harvard-NEC joint degree program, through which she received a master’s degree in composition. She received a second master’s degree in collaborative piano from Boston University.

Julia is the Minister of Music at the Central Square Congregational Church in Bridgewater, where she leads the adult and children’s choirs from the keyboard. She is one of the accompanists for the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and the Boston Symphony Children’s Choir. She also serves as the accompanist for the Metropolitan Chorale

of Brookline, the Dedham Choral Society, the Boston College University Chorale, and the Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus. She previously served as the pianist for the Handel and Haydn Society’s Educational Vocal Quartet, the Wellesley College Chamber Singers, and the Boston Children’s Chorus. She is also a founder and core ensemble member of Juventas New Music Ensemble.

As a composer, her orchestral works have been performed by numerous orchestras, including the BSO and the Boston Pops, and her works have been broadcast on national TV and radio in the United States and in Russia. She was the youngest composer ever published by the Theodore Presser Company. She was also chosen to arrange a folk song for Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Chang to play at Deval Patrick’s inaugural ball.

She has served as a music director or accompanist for over forty opera and musical theater productions. Productions for which Julia was the music director include Cy Coleman’s City of Angels with the Longwood Players and Alexander Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg with OperaHub. Reviewing a performance Julia conducted of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi with the Hubbard Hall Opera Company, the Berkshire Hudson Arts Review said “the players and singers were not just led, but were energized. Schicchi is a tough score, and Julia stood the test.”

Also passionate about early music, Julia music directed a staged performance of four of

Louis-Nicolas Clérambault’s Cantatas with the Harvard Early Music Society, which was taken on tour to Versailles. She also music directed a performance of John Eccles’ Semele with the same organization. Speaking of her performance as a harpsichordist in the Boston Opera Collaborative’s production of Le nozze di Figaro, the Boston Musical Intelligencer said, “The unwavering harpsichord accompaniment of Julia Carey richly and expressively textured the recitatives.”

Julia currently works as a musicianship teacher and department coordinator at the Suzuki School in Newton. She also taught an undergraduate music theory class at Boston College, served as a keyboard harmony teaching fellow at NEC, and worked as a musical theatre teacher at the Belvoir Terrace Arts Camp and the Boston Children’s Theatre.

Julia lives in Winchester with her husband and her daughter. In addition to music, she loves cooking, running, and spending time on Cape Cod.

MINJIN CHUNG cello

Leslie Jacobson Kaye and Richard Kaye have generously sponsored Minjin Chung for the 2020-21 concert season.

Minjin Chung is a cellist based in Boston who enjoys an active career as a freelance musician and is on the cello faculty of the Dedham School of Music. Praised by the Boston Music Intelligencer for her “beautiful sweeping melody played with grace” she has appeared in the top concert halls in the world such as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, and the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. She is an avid performer of new music and has premiered countless new works throughout her years as a student and in her professional career. As an orchestral player, she has attended the Aspen Music Festival as a New Horizon Fellow and has performed with the Sinfonia da Camera, Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the New World Symphony.

As a soloist, she has received awards from the Richmond Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, Virginia Lions Club Bland Music Competition, Virginia String Teachers Association Solo Competition, and the University of Illinois at

Urbana-Champaign Concerto Competition. Born in South Korea, Ms. Chung moved to the U.S. at the age of 5 and grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia where she began her musical studies. Upon falling madly in love with classical music at the age of 17, she graduated from high school a year early to focus on preparing for music school auditions.

She was awarded a full tuition scholarship to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign as a student of Dmitry Kouzov and received her master’s degree at the New England Conservatory as a student of Natasha Brofsky. In her free time, she loves to paint, go to the beach, and take long walks with her dog, Jackie.

Horn player Anne Howarth has a passion for small group collaborations and the opportunities they offer performers and audience members alike to forge personal connections with the music and with each other. She is deeply curious about the ways in which shared musical experiences can invite deeper dialogue and contemplation.

Anne is a founding member and Outreach Director of the mixed-instrumentation chamber group Radius Ensemble and is a senior member of the wind quintet Vento Chiaro. A strong proponent of new music, Anne has commissioned works for chamber ensemble as an individual and with colleagues. As a freelance orchestral player in demand in the greater Boston area, Anne holds Principal Horn chairs with the Lexington Symphony and Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra and occasionally performs with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, among others. Curious about the intersection between live music and movement, Anne has collaborated with Monkeyhouse and dancer/ choreographer Karen Krolak at First Night Boston, the Oberon, and Tufts University.

Anne is a native of the Detroit area, holds undergraduate degrees in both Horn Performance and Environmental Studies from Oberlin Conservatory and Oberlin College respectively, and earned her Master of Music in Performance at New England Conservatory.

Anne teaches horn and coaches chamber music at Tufts University and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), maintains a private studio, and is on the on faculties of the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, the Brookline Music School, and the Milton Afterschool Lesson Program.

WOLCOTT HUMPHREY clarinet

Clarinetist Wolcott Humphrey, originally from western New York, earned a B.M. in Clarinet Performance from Ithaca College in 2006, and went on to earn an M.M. and a Graduate Diploma in Clarinet Performance from the New England Conservatory in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Wolcott has studied clarinet with E. Michael Richards, Richard Faria, William Wrzesien, and Craig Nordstrom.

Humphrey is passionate about new music, and has performed in contemporary chamber ensembles in Ithaca, Providence (Ensemble Parallax), and Boston (Juventas and Sound Icon) as well as at the Charles E. Gamper Festival of Contemporary Music. He was also in the premiere performance of White Snake Projects’ comic opera REV. 23 in Boston.

Humphrey was the principal clarinetist of the Salt Lake Symphonic Winds, performing Martin Ellerby’s Clarinet Concerto with the group in 2011. While living in Providence, he was the principal clarinetist of Fall River Symphony, the co-principal clarinetist of the American Band, and a member of several woodwind chamber groups.

Humphrey is the assistant principal clarinetist of

the Met Winds, performing the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto with the group at the Association of Concert Bands convention in New Jersey and at the Festival of Bands in Boston.

Humphrey performs with Brookline Symphony, and the chamber ensembles Some Assembly Required and the Kalliope Ensemble. Wolcott has been the core clarinetist of Juventas New Music Ensemble since 2012.

TOM SCHMIDT percussion

One of Boston’s versatile freelance percussionists, Thomas Schmidt has performed with The Boston Philharmonic, The Portland Symphony (Maine), Rhode Island Philharmonic, New Bedford Symphony, Placido Domingo, Boston Landmarks Orchestra, Indian Hill Symphony, Lexington Symphony, Symphony New Hampshire, and The Brevard Music Centers Faculty Orchestra. A regular down in the pit orchestra, he has played for The 75th Anniversary Tour of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Opera Maine, The Boston Lyric Opera, various tours with the New England Opera, and the Da Capo Opera Company. Equally at home playing in a jazz big band or drum-set for a musical, Thomas has performed with the Boston Brass All Stars Big Band and has been the drum-set player for countless musicals in the New England area. He

has performed with new music ensembles ALEA III and Dinosaur Annex as well as various choruses, such as Masterworks Chorale, Harvard-Radcliff Chorus, Back Bay Chorale, Boston Celia Society, Coro Allegro, Chorus ProMusica, The Brookline Chorus, and The Newburyport Chorale. Thomas is on the faculty at The Berklee College of Music where he teaches Orchestral Percussion, Marimba, Vibraphone, and Drum Set. Thomas is a student of Salvatore Rabbio, Pat Hollenbeck, Nancy Zeltsman, John Grimes, and Dr. Stuart Marrs. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Percussion Performance from The University of Maine, and his Masters Degree in Percussion Performance from the Boston Conservatory.

Thomas is a Zildjian endorsed artist.

RYAN SHANNON violin

Kevin Mathieu has generously sponsored Ryan Shannon for the 2020-21 concert season.

Ryan Shannon began his musical journey in the mountains of Colorado at five years old when his father, an amateur pianist, gave him his first violin. Sensing his love of music, his parents made it possible for him to attend the Walnut Hill School for the Arts. Ryan continued his studies at the New

England Conservatory, where he studied with Lucy Chapman and Nicholas Kitchen, graduating in 2014. As a student, Ryan had the life-changing opportunity to attend the Center for the Development of Arts Leaders program at From The Top. Through this year-long partnership with the Hope Lodge, a residence for cancer patients, He learned that music can bring together those who are struggling through difficult circumstances. In recent years he has worked to bring this love to as many people as possible. He does this as an educator, as a member of Palaver Strings, and as an explorer of new music with Juventas New Music Ensemble, whose vivacious energy creates a powerful connection between music and the hearts of those who listen.

NICK SOUTHWICK flute

Praised by the Royal Gazette for his “beautiful phrasing” and “bright and lively playing” and by the Boston Musical Intelligencer for his “admirable ensemble cohesion,” flutist Nicholas Southwick made his international solo debut at the age of 18 performing the music of J.S. Bach with the Bermuda Chamber Orchestra in Hamilton, Bermuda and has since performed in Austria, France, the United Kingdom, and northern Italy, where he held a principal flute fellowship

position at the Trentino Festival. He holds awards from the Presser Foundation, Orchestra of the Americas, and Bay Chamber Concerts.

Based in Boston, Nicholas is core flutist of the Juventas New Music Ensemble and enjoys an active career as a freelance musician throughout New England, appearing with the Boston Opera Collaborative, Bangor Symphony Orchestra, New Hampshire Festival Orchestra, Harvard Radcliffe Choral Society, Manchester Choral Society, Salem Classical, King’s Chapel Recital Series, and Bay Chamber Concerts, among many others.

Nicholas received his Bachelor of Arts degree Summa Cum Laude in music and French from Gordon College, where he was the first prizewinner of the 2015 Concerto Competition.

He earned his graduate degree at Bard College’s Longy School of Music under the tutelage of Marco Granados and Robert Willoughby. He also studied with Andrea Mairhofer at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria and has performed in masterclasses for Trevor Wye, Lorna McGhee, Rachel Brown, Samuel Coles, and Jean Ferrandis.

In demand as an instructor, Nicholas serves on the flute faculties of the Tufts University Community Music Programs, Concord Conservatory of Music, and Ipswich Schools. In 2017, he traveled to Cap-Haitian, Haiti under the auspices of the Fulbright Association to teach flutists at the Institut de Musique “Cemuchca.”

LU YU viola

Born in China, Lu Yu began her musical studies at the age of six on violin. She started to play viola as her principal instrument at age twelve at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou, China. Her studies then took her to the Royal Academy of Music in London with a full scholarship where she learned under the tutelage of Matthew Souter for the Bachelor of Music degree. Ms. Yu then studied with Marcus Thompson at the New England Conservatory in Boston where she received her Master of Music degree. Among her numerous awards, she was granted “The Young Musician of 2008” in Hong Kong. Her performance career has led to being the founding violist of the Loki String Quartet which is in residence at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Ms. Yu is also principal violist of the Boston Civic Symphony, performs with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, was recently co-principal viola of the Missouri Symphony and frequently performs with many of the ensembles around the Boston area.
