Canciones de Monteverde (2020) Oliver Caplan Ryan Shannon, violin; Olga Patramanska-Bell, violin; Lu Yu, viola; Minjin Chung, cello — World Premiere — * Call for Scores Winner

IN THE COMPOSERS’ OWN WORDS Bongani Ndodana-Breen Apologia at Umzimvubu This piece stems from my fascination with certain aspects of Xhosa culture and the cultural landmarks that are part of everyday life in the heartland of the former Transkei, now the Eastern Cape in South Africa. Umzimvubu (literally “house of the hippopotamus”) is a river. It’s a rather grand name that has always captured my imagination. One imagines that at some point in history the place must have had plenty of these beautiful creatures around – enough for them to be imbedded in the folklore of the area. The use of apologia in the title is informed by Greek classicism – essentially the work then becomes a defense, an unwavering explanation of culture and this composer’s personal identity through a piece of music. The music is full of dance. It begins with an animated dance (Vivace. Metronome mark is dotted quarter note at 105). This section is inspired by recollections of various dances and how the Xhosa young people move to music. A transformation occurs with tempo and time signature change at letter D (Metronome mark: dotted half note now at 52). Here elderly Xhosa matrons appear. Their dance is less animated and inspired by the Xhosa dance umxhenstso.

Katy Abbott Making Angels The inspiration behind this piece comes from the sculptures of Michelangelo’s sculptures Four Prisoners / Quattro Prigioni that date from ca.1521 -1523 and are housed in Florence, Italy at the Galleria ‘Dell Accademia. I recall being shocked when viewing the sculptures due to the raw power I perceived them to

muster as they try to escape the marble block. The music tries to capture the inseparability of the prisoner and the marble, the textural differences within the sculpture but also the wrought emotion portrayed by the figures. A companion piece for Making Angels was composed in 2010: Music for Demons is scored for alto flute, bass clarinet and piano. Making Angels inspired the architectural design of a sustainable house based on the music and the program note (through Breathe Architecture). The house was a finalist in the Victorian Architectural Awards for house of 220Sqm in 2014, Australia.

Chun-Hay Shing Moon Over West River The title of the work is borrowed from a “ci pai”, a set pattern of “ci”, a traditional form of Chinese poetry. One of the most famous poets writing “ci” is Su Shi (1037 1101), several of whose poems carry the same title as this work. One of them depicts a night of full moon but with clouds covering it most of the time — a feeling of incompleteness and solitude grabs the poet’s heart. By opposing dark and luminous sonorities, this piece paints the scene and expresses a similar melancholy.

Evan Fein Untranslatable (Violin Sonata No. 1) It’s fairly rare that I find myself moved by clickbait, but some time ago a list of words lacking English equivalents was making the rounds on Facebook. A lifelong lover of languages, I couldn’t resist, and actually found myself quite touched by some of the beautiful concepts other cultures have managed to encapsulate in single words. When my friend Andrew Sords—a captivating and enigmatic performer—broached the idea of a commission, somehow the idea of doing a piece about a few of these alluring words felt right. Forelsket - n. (Norwegian: for-elz-kut) The euphoria felt

when first falling in love. Fika - n. (Swedish: fee-kah) 1. A midday break taken for the purpose of drinking coffee, eating pastries, and socializing with colleagues. 2. v. To take such a break. Hiraeth - n. (Welsh: hee-ryeth) A nostalgic longing for the past; grief or homesickness for a home to which return is impossible, or which perhaps never even existed.

Daniel Cueto Kimsa Harawicha At the heart of this piece are three anonymous lyrics in Kechwa, the most widely spoken non-European language in the Americas. An ancient tongue, it became the official language of the great Inca Empire, and is still spoken by about 10 million people in present-day Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Argentina. Having been an important symbol of status and high culture before the European Conquest, it developed a refined literature which has continued to live and develop orally throughout the centuries. The specific texts I have chosen for this work reflect this sophistication of sonority and meaning. They are anonymous lyrics from the Apurímac region in central Peru, gathered by prominent Peruvian author and anthropologist José María Arguedas (1911-1969). After comparing these accounts to alternative versions by other native speakers, and relying on my own basic knowledge of the language, I made some minor modifications on the original texts and thus created my own renditions for the purpose of this work. “Kimsa harawicha”, the work’s title, can be translated as “Three songs”.

Tamilla Ahadova Without You

on smoke-filled Parisian roofs to the author’s dreamy evocation of Plato as he wanders the streets of Paris.

The work was written in the words of the great Azerbaijani poet Nasimi, who lived in the fourteenth to fifteenth centuries. The words of the composition glorify unrequited love, but in spite of everything, the main character’s unique love shows itself.

The musical setting is made of four parts separated by three instrumental transitions. These misterioso transitions act as reminiscences of the moonlighted and smoke-filled roofs of the first verse and create the formal unity of the piece.

The music associated with the idea expressed in each verse develops tonally, harmonically, and registrally. Music in different words shows us loneliness and can be taken literally as meaning “without you” (Sənsiz), expressing great love. The piece reaches its culmination with the intonation “Gəl” (come), as if calling his great love in his heart. There, a solo piano can be heard. After the solo, hopes seem to be dashed. In the reprise of the composition, the main tonality is obtained. The composition is completed with the intonation of loneliness (“Without you” – Sənsiz) and expression of the unrequited and great love of the character.

Martin Loridan Croquis Parisien A setting of Paul Verlaine’s Croquis parisien (1866), this work was commissioned by “Culture Esperance Roquette” (Paris). It is the result of an international collaboration between the string quartet Korutet (New Zealand), the French soprano Alice Fagard and a network of international composers I co-founded in 2013. Short and dense, Paul Verlaine’s Croquis parisien is a masterpiece. The “musical” use of the French language is particularly rich, as the three verses of the poem contain a great diversity of places and atmospheres - from the geometrical description of the moonlight’s reflection

Oliver Caplan Canciones de Monteverde In December 2019, I journeyed to Monteverde, Costa Rica, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. After a long day traveling from Boston, I woke before sunrise to meet a local naturalist. Over the next five hours, binoculars in hand, we saw over 50 species of birds. Birdwatching revealed that a rainbow was hiding in plain sight. I was in awe of the naturalist’s talent to notice the slightest movement or flash of color. Of course, not all birds were looking to camouflage. For those looking to strut their stuff, nothing was more recognizable than their signature songs, weaving in and out of the cloud forest symphony. Canciones de Monteverde is built on musical interpretations of seven calls, a small sample from five hours in one of nature’s most melodious halls. The birds represented are the Collared Trogan, Lessons Mot Mot, Green-crowned Brilliant, Black Faced Solitaire, Golden-browed Chlorophonia, Red-billed Pidgeon and Grey-breasted Wren. Writing this music in spring 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, was a bittersweet endeavor. An avid traveler, I find unending joy meeting new people, learning about their cultures, and exploring diverse ecosystems. Staying at home for months on end has been an exercise of memory and anticipation. This piece recalls one perfect morning. I hope that it reminds you of your own grand adventures.

TRANSLATION The moon was shedding her plates of zinc In obtuse angles. The plumes of smoke like ‘fives’ distinct Rose thick and black from high roof-tangles. The sky was grey, there wept a breeze Like a bassoon. Far off, a tom-cat, stealthy, discreet, Miaowed, oh strangely out of tune. I, walked, of divine Plato dreaming And of Phidias,Salamis, Marathon, under twinkling Eyes, eyes of blue jets of gas.
