WHO WE ARE Juventas New Music Ensemble is a contemporary chamber group with a special focus on emerging voices. Juventas shares classical music as a vibrant, living art form. We bring audiences music from a diverse array of composers that live in today’s world and respond to our time.

OUR WORK Since our founding in 2005, we have performed the music of 336 living composers. Juventas has earned a reputation as a curator with a keen eye for new talent. We open doors for composers with top-notch professional performances that present their work in the best possible light.

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Juventas Community, Two decades ago, Composer Erin Huelskamp, Conductor Mark David Buckles, and Pianist Julia Scott Carey (still on our stage) had a novel idea: a chamber ensemble that would lift emerging composers and bring audiences music by composers who live in today’s world and respond to our time. Classical music, perhaps more than any other art form, remains rooted in greats of the past, and a misguided belief that, in order to attract listeners, ensembles must center their programming on masterworks by composers like Beethoven and Mozart. Even in the niche world of “new music,” the emphasis is typically on a small handful of late career composers who have already more-or-less secured their place in history. Juventas became the first contemporary chamber ensemble in the United States with a mission focused on emerging voices.

Our first season opened in December 2005 with a concert at Boston University’s Marsh Chapel. There were six people on the audience. Since then, we have performed over 200 concerts featuring the music of over 300 living composers. Over 100 works have been premiered on the Juventas stage. We now reach over 2,500 audience members in-person each year, and over 1,000 online.

It takes a village to build an organization. Juventas is here today because of passionate, hard work. Erin, Mark David and Julia got the ball rolling. Paul Bohn, our first Board President, setup our organizational structure and secured our 501(c)(3) non-profit status.

Conductors Michael Sakir and Lidiya Yankovskaya led us to new artistic heights.

Generations of board members guided us through good times and challenging ones.

Staff members have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to run our organization.

Musicians, composers and artists in other media brought their awe-inspiring talent to our stage. And last, but not least, YOU, our community, joined us in the concert hall to share in this incredible journey, and invested generously, to help us grow. You, our wonderful family, are the biggest cause for celebration on this milestone occasion.

A YEAR TO CELEBRATE In Juventas’s 20-year history, we have staged programs with dancers, poets, circus acrobats, live painting, puppetry and robotics. We have shared the music of 336 living composers from across the globe, presenting works of every contemporary style with grit, heart, hope, and joy. We have curated concerts that speak to the most important topics of our time, including climate change, gun violence, racial inequality, LGBTQ+ rights, the war in Ukraine, and so much more. Audiences join us in the concert hall, historic houses, and garden landscapes to hear music about the places we call home and the causes that connect us. Juventas has built a place for music that lives and breathes, and changes with the times. These 20 years of Juventas have been nothing short of wonderful. Let us celebrate our story, with some of our 2024-25 “Legacy” season highlights.

JUVENTAS HOSTS A BIRTHDAY PARTY Happy 20th birthday, Juventas! On November 16, 2024, The Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge enjoyed fanfare a-plenty as we celebrated the anniversary of the ensemble’s founding. A balloon archway and vibrant 20th anniversary banners welcomed our largest indoor audience of the season into the concert hall for a lively journey through Juventas history, with an entire concert build on one of our proudest legacies: Juventas commissions.

We opened the night with J.A.J. Sedarski’s Promesa, a love song inspired by the composer’s great-grandfather, then celebrated Juventas founder Julia Scott Carey with Stephanie Ann Boyd’s Apple Blossom, dedicated to our beloved pianist. Kelley Hollis soared into the soprano register, filling the hall with the beauty of Omar Najmi’s More Than Our Own Caves, a meditation on mental health. Audiences then pulled small wooden flutes and carved pipes from beneath their chairs to participate in the performance of Libby Meyer’s spirited, interactive Wild Beauty, contributing a fun assortment of bird calls.

Next, a particular gem and audience favorite: Oliver Caplan’s The Emerald Necklace, a tribute to renowed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

The program finale included two commemorative world premieres, specially commissioned to mark this milestone: Ayumi Okada’s Rebirth of the Sun, cataloguing triumph and resilience; and Cole Reyes’ Steel and Stone, considering the bridges we build in collaboration.

The night was truly one to remember: we were honored to have five out of our seven featured composers in the concert hall with us for the performance, making the night extra-special with personal piece introductions and post-concert opportunities to thank these amazing artists for their music. Other special guests included Juventas Founder Erin Huelskamp, our first Board President, and former Juventas core clarinetist Wolcott Humphery.

After the concert, auidences joined artists, staff, and board members in the gallery for a joyous reception with a delicious spread of sushi, cake, and champagne.

We don’t need pomp and circumstance to remind us that what makes Juventas special is the people, but Juventas at 20 allowed us to give an extra loud, extra adoring cheers to thank our wonderful family and the ensemble that we have loved for twenty years. To many more!

VETTIX GALORE Through our partnership with VetTix, now in its seventh year, Juventas donated 31 concert tickets to veterans during our 2024-25 “Legacy” season. Our First Parish Sudbury and First Baptist Medford concerts were particularly popular, with many veterans posting thank-you notes to the VetTix site to highlight their experience. We are honored to have made an impact on this important community and aim to deepen our partnership with VetTix in the coming years.

BY THE FIRESIDE Sounds of New England, featuring music inspired by local landscapes, marked our inaugural “Fireside Concert” program in collaboration with the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill. Working closely with the NEBG team, we envisioned this new series as a cozy, intimate evening—think parlor salon concert in a modern, garden terrace setting. As our clarinet, violin, cello, and piano quartet charmed the audience, the fireplace’s crackling added a particularly pleasant ambiance to NEBG’s sold out cafe area with cocktail table seating, and winter warmers available for purchase.

The Fireside Series, set to return to the garden in 2026, marks our rapidly broadening partnership with NEBG, and strengthens our commitment to the Boylston community.

INSPIRING INTERNS

Reflections from Molly Breen-Aronson From 2024–25, Juventas was honored to welcome four new Arts Administration Interns into the Juventas family. Our internship program is unique because, as part of a small staff, interns are able to gain hands-on, high-level experience in many areas of non-profit leadership—from curating social media campaigns to brainstorming subscription package assets. The hard work and input of our interns is invaluable. Our program is such a sucess that three of our current staff members are former interns. Molly Breen-Aronson, a former intern, is now Juventas’s Development Coordinator.

“The Juventas internship program has awarded me with an abundance of experiences that are rare for an undergraduate student to access. On my first day, I was welcomed with open arms by a warm, enthusiastic staff. Everyone was kind, patient and thorough when showing me the ropes of running an arts organization. I was taught important technological skills, marketing techniques, concert organization, and most importantly, the value of contemporary classical music in our world. As a violist, I had the chance to premiere some new pieces, but did not have a foot in the new music world. Juventas opened my eyes to a vibrant community of composers writing beautiful music, responding to our own time.

During my internship, I came to especially enjoy participating in alumni relations.

I got to communicate with composers on a daily basis, collecting updates on their achievements and featuring them on social media. It felt good knowing that I was helping foster significant artistic relationships. In addition, I learned the ins-and-outs of non-profit structures and the importance of individual giving. The development side of Juventas was really interesting, so you could imagine my excitement when Artistic Director Oliver Caplan offered me the opportunity to serve as Development Coordinator!

This kind of career advancement opportunity is very special to me, as someone who is still early in her musical career. The Development Coordinator position has allowed me to take charge on my own projects and even pass on the knowledge that I was given as an intern. I am incredibly grateful for the Juventas Internship Program for nurturing my skills, and allowing me to fully immerse myself in arts administration.”

I always lived in New Hampshire until college, so New Hampshire will always feel like home. Between stepping outside to a serene swirl of red, brown, and orange leaves being carried by the wind during the autumn, or jumping in cool lakes during the hot summers, New Hampshire is an ideal presentation of nature’s gifts.”

JINGZHE featured on “Nicholas Southwick: Center Stage” “A year is divided into 24 solar terms in the traditional East Asian calendar, and Jingzhe is the 3rd solar term. According to the traditional Chinese folklore, during this period thunderstorms will wake the hibernating insects up. Jingzhe is vivid: dormant animals gradually drill out from the soil and stone crevices and start activities for the arrival of Spring. With the expression of the flute, we can also feel the warmth of spring and flowers are now blooming everywhere.”

AFTERIMAGE featured on “Echoes of the Wild” “Afterimage captures the lingering impressions of my journey as an immigrant to the United States, drawing upon memories of the breathtaking landscapes I encountered along the way, inspired by places such as the surreal desertscape of Joshua Tree and the dramatic red rock formations of Zion Canyon. Each of these landscapes left an indelible mark on my mind, like an afterimage that persists even when the view is gone.”

AQUEOUS LAYERS featured on “Echoes of the Wild” “Growing up on Cape Cod, water defined the landscape around me. Bodies of water are full of layers, as currents of different temperatures and strengths, filtered sunlight, and various aquatic animals mix together. As all of my projects for summer 2020 were cancelled or delayed, I often ended up back on Cape Cod, swimming around relatively large ponds. I found it comforting that the pond seemed both ignorant of and unbothered by the upheaval happening in the world around it.”

VARIATIONS ON THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND featured on “Echoes of the Wild” “This Land is Your Land is simultaneously a patriotic hymn, a rallying cry for immigrants, and a sardonic protest song. But the message remains the same: America belongs to everyone. My variations aim to reflect the reality of America’s situation. Each variation grows more distant from the theme and more violent in character, until giving way to a gentle plea for unity. We are left wondering, “Whose land is this land?”

DAVID BIEDENBENDER 2025 BARLOW PRIZE WINNER Out of 526 applicants from 46 countries, Biedenbender was awarded a grant of $25,000 to compose a new work for wind symphony. The piece will be premiered by BYU Wind Symphony, Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, United States Navy Band, and University of Michigan Symphony Band in 2027-2028.

QUINN MASON 2025 ASCAP MORTON GOULD YOUNG COMPOSER AWARD RECIPIENT Mason was awarded the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award in June, recognizing his “remarkable talent, vision, and dedication to the craft” (ASCAP). He also won the Georgia Festival of Music’s Emerging Maestros Conducting Competition.

URSULA KWONG-BROWN NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF NINTH PLANET Ursula recently became co-Artistic Director of the new music group Ninth Planet in San Francisco. NINTH PLANET is a new music ensemble and service organization dedicated to the commissioning, performance and furthering of new music, especially the works of young composers and artists and those from underrepresented communities.

KEANE SOUTHARD COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE WITH TE DEUM AND REQUIEM PREMIERE AT MARLBORO Keane will be the new Composer-in-Residence with Te Deum, a professional choir in Kansas City, for the next two seasons. Keane’s Requiem for Animals premiered May 17, 2025 at Potash Hill, Marlboro, VT, by the Brattleboro Concert Choir, Jonathan Harvey-director.

LAUREN BERNOFSKY STAGED OPERA PERFORMANCE Last May, Lauren Bernofsky’s opera THE MENSCH received a staged workshop performance by Lyric Theatre @ Illinois.

Bernofsky is currently orchestrating this full-length grand opera about Anton Schmid, an unsung hero of the Holocaust.

KETTY NEZ CD RELEASE WITH ALBANY RECORDS Ketty Nez had a recent CD release, through the light with Albany Records. The album’s titular work is a multi-faceted, emotionally fast-paced string quartet, drawing on fragments of folk music recorded by Béla Bartók in the early 20th century. The subsequent piece, 5 fragments in 3 is similarly inspired.

MARIA THOMPSON CORELY RECORDING PROJECT WITH EBONY MUSIC Maria Thompson Corely participated in Ebony Music’s recording project in which 10 pianists of African descent recorded at least 10 pieces each by composers of African descent. Funded by a grant from the Sphinx Organization, the recordings took place at Yamaha headquarters in New York City.

JOE JAXSON COMMISSIONS WITH MAJOR SYMPHONIES Joe Jaxson had his commission debut with the Richmond Symphony in VA on March 22nd & 23rd. His piece, Born in the Iron Grip, celebrated the 50th Anniversary of tennis player Arthur Ashe’s Wimbledon Championship win from 1975. Joe received a second commission with the Allentown Symphony for April 2026.
