FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Tonight’s program Encore! reprises naturethemed favorites from the past five years. These works were selected by YOU—our audience— through Juventas’s popular “Play It Again!” cards.

Juventas believes contemporary music deserves repeat performances, just like the classical greats. Performing a piece for a second time allows us to introduce the composer’s music to even more people in our community. And for those of us lucky enough to hear these wonderful works for the second time, we get to revisit beloved melodies, like taking a walk with an old friend. A great piece of music reveals itself in layers; each time we listen, we notice something new.

Juventas New Music Ensemble is a contemporary chamber group with a special focus on emerging voices. Juventas shares classical music as a vibrant, living art form.

We bring audiences music from a diverse array of composers that live in today’s world and respond to our time.

Since its founding in 2005, Juventas has performed the music of over 300 living composers. The ensemble has earned a reputation as a curator with a keen eye for new talent. It opens doors for composers with top-notch professional performances that present their work in the best possible light.

IN THE COMPOSER’S OWN WORDS Gwyneth Walker | A Vision of Hills (2002) 2022 Audience Favorite A Vision of Hills is an extended, one-movement musical exploration of the traditional Irish hymn tune, “Be Thou My Vision.” This has always been one of the composer’s favorite melodies. The reference to hills comes from the view of the hilly Vermont countryside as seen from the composer’s studio. This landscape infuses the music.

Stacy Garrop | Beacon of the Bay (2021) 2022 Audience Favorite When the Newport Music Festival commissioned me for a piano trio in honor of their 2021 season, I looked for a topic that would celebrate an aspect of the Newport community. While researching the area, I was struck by the nine lighthouses situated around the island. The dual nature of lighthouses was particularly appealing to me: not only do they serve a vital role in the navigation of ships around rocks and land, but they are also a beautiful sight, particularly at night when their blinking beacons are clearly visible to the eye. It occurred to me that lighthouses link the past with the present, and will endure long into the future, with their beacons serving the same purpose for every generation.

Bongani Ndodana-Breen | Apologia at Umzimvubu (2006) 2021 Audience Favorite This piece stems from my fascination with certain aspects of Xhosa culture and the cultural landmarks that are part of everyday life in the heartland of the former Transkei, now the Eastern Cape in South Africa.

Umzimvubu (literally “house of the hippopotamus”) is a river. It’s a rather grand name that has always captured my imagination. One imagines that at some point in history the place must have had plenty of these beautiful creatures around –enough for them to be imbedded in the folklore of the area. The use of apologia in the title is informed by Greek classicism –essentially the work then becomes a defense, an unwavering explanation of culture and this composer’s personal identity through a piece of music. The music is full of dance. It begins with an animated dance (Vivace. Metronome mark is dotted quarter note at 105). This section is inspired by recollections of various dances and how the Xhosa young people move to music. A transformation occurs with tempo and time signature change at letter D (Metronome mark: dotted half note now at 52). Here elderly Xhosa matrons appear. Their dance is less animated and inspired by the Xhosa dance umxhenstso.

Nell Shaw Cohen | Retrace (2018) 2018 Audience Favorite Retrace was composed in response to the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. This trail retraces the Anza Expedition of 1775-76 on which 240 men, women, and children followed indigenous routes from modern-day Mexico through Arizona and California to settle the San Francisco Bay Area for Spain. A narrative mapped onto the land rather than a “trail” in the usual sense, it is an ongoing project of cultural and historical preservation.

I followed the Anza Trail on a road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco, stopping at parks, Missions, Presidios, museums, and areas where the Expedition made camp—from expansive ocean beaches to gritty city parks. With Retrace, I sought to musically express a vivid awareness of the past that emerged for me when this historical narrative was situated within firsthand experiences of physical spaces.

Retrace begins with four sections of music that shift abruptly in mood, alternately evoking the historic expedition (conveyed by a lyrical theme in the violin) and the contemporary urban and rural landscapes its path traverses. Finally, past and present become one. A somber coda reflects at first on the sacred spaces of Missions, then the dark legacy of colonialism seen in the loss of Native lives, land, and cultures.

Christina Rusnak│| The Forest and the Architect (2022) 2022 Audience Favorite In 1901, leaders in Portland Oregon, gathered to envision their city’s future. Portland hired Frederick Law Olmsted’s sons to design the city’s parks. John Charles Olmsted arrived by train in Portland in April 1903. Strategic, visionary planning was at the heart of the 1904 Olmsted report.

Today virtually everyone in the city can easily walk to spacious and engaging parks.

As the vision’s cornerstone, Olmsted proposed that the densely wooded hills above northwest Portland be designated by the City as “a forest park.” The plans languished and Forest Park was plundered for over 40 years until advocates, and leaders committed to its completion in 1948. At 5,200 acres, it reigns as the largest urban forest in the United States and provides critical refuge for hundreds of native wildlife and plant species and acts as an important air and water filter. With more than 80 miles of trails, the park flanks the Tualatin Mountains, overlooking the city and the Willamette River providing invaluable access to nature, exercise, and educational opportunities.

The Olmsteds’ contribution to this city is living, breathing and enduring.

I traverse the trails of Forest Park often. I sought to convey the forest’s inherent and contrasting elements - the sounds of the tiniest members of the forest’s inhabitants; the majesty of its towering trees; John Olmsted’s voice within the pages of the 1904 plan; trepidation as “progress” undermined the vision; the rebirth of the plan, and the joy of experiencing the park today as envisioned over a century ago.

Oliver Caplan | Watershed (2020) 2021 Audience Favorite Watershed was inspired by a favorite walk along the Mystic River. From the boat launch in Medford Square, just a few blocks from my house, I meander for miles upriver, eventually reaching a series of gleaming lakes. While this urban oasis has provided solace and inspiration for years, in 2020 it became something more: a lifeline that quieted my find and filled my soul. I have walked this route countless times. Yet no two strolls are the same. It’s the light, or the clouds. The birds: herons, swans, ducks, geese, orioles, tanagers, kingfishers, red-winged blackbirds... even the occasional bald eagle. And sometimes, just the simple beauty of flowing water, rippling in the wind.

COMPOSERS GWYNETH WALKER b. 1947 Widely performed throughout the country, the music of American composer Gwyneth Walker is beloved by performers and audiences alike for its energy, beauty, reverence, drama, and humor. Dr. Gwyneth Walker is a graduate of Brown University and the Hartt School of Music. She holds B.A., M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in Music Composition. A former faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory, she resigned from academic employment in 1982 in order to pursue a career as a full-time composer. For nearly 30 years, she lived on a dairy farm in Braintree, Vermont before returning to live in her childhood hometown of New Canaan, Connecticut.

A composer since age two, Gwyneth Walker has always placed great value on writing in a broad array of genres. More than 400 commissioned works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, chorus, and solo voice have been created—all arising from the impetus of performers and collaboration with musicians.

STACY GARROP b.1969 Stacy Garrop’s music is centered on dramatic and lyrical storytelling. The sharing of stories is a defining element of our humanity; we strive to share with others the experiences and concepts that we find compelling. She shares stories by taking audiences on sonic journeys – some simple and beautiful, while others are complicated and dark – depending on the needs and dramatic shape of the story.

Dr. Garrop earned degrees in music composition at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (B.M.), University of Chicago (M.A.), and Indiana University-Bloomington (D.M.). She taught composition and orchestration full-time at Roosevelt University from 2000 to 2016 before leaving to launch her freelance career.

In 2022-2023, she served as the featured composer of the Bowling Green State University New Music Festival, Indiana State University Contemporary Music Festival, and the University of Texas at San Antonio New Music Festival, with additional guest residencies at Michigan State University, Florida State University, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Garrop has received numerous awards and grants including an Arts and Letters Award in Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Fromm Music Foundation Grant, Barlow Prize, and three Barlow Endowment commissions, along with prizes from competitions. garrop.com

BONGANI NDODANA-BREEN b.1975 Bongani Ndodana-Breen has written a wide range of music encompassing symphonic work, opera, chamber music and vocal music. According to The New York Times his “delicately made music - airy, spacious, terribly complex but never convoluted - has a lot to teach the Western wizards of metric modulation and layered rhythms about grace and balance.” He has received commissions from the Minnesota Orchestra, Johannesburg Philharmonic, Wigmore Hall, Vancouver Recital Society, Madam Walker Theatre Indianapolis, SAMRO, UNISA, Stellenbosch Chamber Music Festival, the Emancipation Festival of Trinidad & Tobago, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Luminato Festival Toronto and Haydn Festspiele Eisenstadt. He is the composer of Winnie, The Opera, based on the life of Mrs Winnie Mandela. Other recent major works include the sinfonia concertante Emhlabeni for pianist Florian Uhling, the multimedia oratorio Credo commissioned by UNISA and Three Orchestral Songs on Poems of Ingrid Jonker performed by the Cape Town Philharmonic. 2018 saw the world premiere of his Harmonia Ubuntu by the Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä on their historic tour to South Africa as part of the Nelson Mandela Centennial.

Ndodana-Breen has a PhD (Music Composition) from Rhodes University and is a 2019/2020 Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University. He was awarded the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Music in 1998 and selected as one of the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans of 2011. He was Director of the Canadian new music organization Ensemble Noir from 1999 - 2007. According to Canada’s The Globe and Mail “He seems to be just as interested in giving pleasure as in opening people’s minds… which makes him doubly a novelty on the Toronto New Music scene” (Globe and Mail, Nov 2001). ndodanabreen.com

NELL SHAW COHEN b.1988 Nell Shaw Cohen evokes landscapes, visual art, and the lives of mavericks in her lyrical works for concert and stage. She has received commission from Houston Grand Opera, Boston Choral Ensemble, Juventas New Music Ensemble, American Wild Ensemble, Laura Strickling, and Montage Music Society, among others. A 75-minute live album of Cohen’s choral and vocal works commissioned

by Skylark Vocal Ensemble, titled Sauntering Songs,was released in September 2023.

Her operas have had workshops with Fort Worth Opera, The American Opera Project, New Dramatists, New York University, and University of New Mexico, and she was first runner-up for the 2020 Zepick Modern Opera Competition.

Previously Artist-in-Residence with Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, Cohen has received an OPERA America Commissioning Grant for Women Composers, Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Arts Award, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich Prize from the International Alliance for Women in Music.

Cohen earned degrees in composition from NYU and New England Conservatory, where her teachers included Herschel Garfein and Michael Gandolfi. As Founder & Director of Landscape Music, an international network of composers and performers, she advocates for music inspired by landscape, nature, and place. She lives in the Shawangunk Mountains of New York’s Hudson Valley. nellshawcohen.com

CHRISTINA RUSNAK b.1959 Passionate about composing about place and the human experience, composer Christina Rusnak works at the intersection of place, nature, culture, history and art to integrate context into her music from the world around her to convey something meaningful about the human experience.

An avid hiker, Ms. Rusnak has worked with the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, and Oregon State Parks to sonically explore and celebrate our many environmental treasures, resulting in numerous landscape-inspired works.

Ms. Rusnak’s repertoire includes chamber, choral, orchestra, wind band, jazz, solo pieces, electro-acoustic works, and film. An advocate for New Music, Rusnak has served as Sound Art Curator for the Dallas Contemporary Art Museum, as Executive Director for Orchestra in Philadelphia, and currently serves as president of the International Alliance for Women in Music. OLIVER CAPLAN b.1982 Award-winning American composer Oliver Caplan offers a voice of hope in an uncertain world. Inspired by the resiliency of the human spirit and beauty of the natural world, his music celebrates stories of social justice, conservation and community. Mr. Caplan’s works have been performed in over 200 performances nationwide.

He has been commissioned by the Atlanta Chamber Players, Bella Piano Trio, Bronx Arts Ensemble and New Hampshire Master Chorale, among others. Winner of a Special Citation for the American Prize in Orchestral Composition and the Oratorio Society of New York 150th Anniversary Competition, additional recognition includes two Veridian Symphony wins and the Fifth House Ensemble Competition Grand Prize. Caplan’s 2017 album You Are Not Alone, was has featured on Apple Music’s Classical A-list and streamed over 200,000 times.

Additional recordings include his 2021 release Watershed, and tracks on Trio Siciliano’s Exploring Music (2018, U07 Records) and the Sinfonietta of Riverdale’s New World Serenade (2016, Albany Records).

NICHOLAS SOUTHWICK flute

Praised by the Royal Gazette for his “beautiful phrasing” and “bright and lively playing,” flutist Nicholas Southwick made his international solo debut at the age of 18 performing the music of J.S. Bach with the Bermuda Chamber Orchestra in Hamilton, Bermuda. He holds awards from the Presser Foundation and the Bay Chamber Concerts (Rockport, Maine), where he was recently honored with the Ezra Rachlin Prize for Excellence.Nicholas received his Bachelor of Arts degree Summa Cum Laude in music and French from Gordon College, where he was the first prizewinner of the 2015 Concerto Competition. He earned his Master of Music degree at Bard College’s Longy School of Music.

CELINE FERRO clarinet Margie & Chris Brown have generously sponsored Celine Ferro for the 2023-24 concert season.

Celine Ferro is the clarinetist of the Kalliope Reed Quintet, along with being an active performer and teacher in the Greater Boston Area. After earning two degrees in clarinet performance from Boston University and the New England Conservatory, she went on to premier works with new music chamber groups like Some Assembly Required, and the woodwind trio that she co-founded, Mythic Winds. She has appeared as a guest with the Brookline Symphony Orchestra, Boston Civic Symphony, and Cambridge Philharmonic. Currently, she has expanding clarinet studios in Boston and New Hampshire, and collaborates in a groove oriented quintet by the name of Shibui, which focuses on acoustically arranged polyrhythmic compositions. When she isn’t practicing, Celine enjoys road trips, making her own kombucha, and shark-watching at the beach.

Horn player Anne Howarth has a passion for small group collaborations and the opportunities they offer performers and audience members alike to forge personal connections with the music and with each other. She is deeply curious about the ways in which shared musical experiences can invite deeper dialogue and contemplation.

Anne is a founding member and Outreach Director of the mixed-instrumentation chamber group Radius Ensemble and is a senior member of the wind quintet Vento Chiaro. A strong proponent of new music, Anne has commissioned works for chamber ensemble as an individual and with colleagues. As a freelance orchestral player in demand in the greater Boston area, Anne holds Principal Horn chairs with the Lexington Symphony and Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra and occasionally performs with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Curious about the intersection between live music and movement, Anne has collaborated with Monkeyhouse and dancer/choreographer Karen Krolak at First Night Boston, the Oberon, and Tufts University.

Anne is a native of the Detroit area, holds undergraduate degrees in both Horn Performance and Environmental Studies from Oberlin Conservatory and Oberlin College respectively, and earned her Master of Music in Performance at New England Conservatory.

RYAN SHANNON violin Oliver Caplan & Chris Beagan have generously sponsored Ryan Shannon for the 2023-24 concert season.

Ryan Shannon began his musical journey in the mountains of Colorado at five years old when his father, an amateur pianist, gave him his first violin. Sensing his love of music, his parents made it possible for him to attend the Walnut Hill School for the Arts. Ryan continued his studies at the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Lucy Chapman and Nicholas Kitchen, graduating in 2014. As a student, Ryan had the life-changing opportunity to attend the Center for the Development of Arts Leaders program at From The Top. Through this year-long partnership with the Hope Lodge, a residence for cancer patients, He learned that music can bring together those who are struggling through difficult circumstances. In recent years he has worked to bring this love to as many people as possible. He does this as an educator, as a member of Palaver Strings, and as an explorer of new music with Juventas New Music Ensemble, whose vivacious energy creates a powerful connection between music and the hearts of those who listen.

THOMAS BARTH cello Leslie Jacobson Kaye & Richard Kaye have generously sponsored Thomas Barth for the 2023-24 concert season.

Cellist Thomas Barth enjoys a varied career as a chamber and orchestral musician throughout New England. He has performed with groups such as the Handel and Haydn Society, The Boston Festival Orchestra, Boston Baroque, A Far Cry, and Palaver Strings. Thomas is passionate about bringing thoughtful musical programming to the widest possible audiences; as a chamber musician, he has performed in diverse venues such as schools, farms, churches, and community centers throughout North America and Europe. His primary teachers include Richard Aaron and Lluís Claret, and he has performed in masterclasses for leading concert cellists such as Truls Mørk, Anner Bylsma, and Johannes Moser. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in cello performance with highest honors from the University of Michigan and a Master’s from The New England Conservatory where he was a recipient of the Gregor Piatagorsky Memorial Fund scholarship. In addition to his performance schedule, he maintains a private teaching studio and serves on the faculty at the Brookline Public Schools. For the past several years, Thomas has maintained regular yoga and meditation practices and is interested in the connection between mindfulness, music, and movement.

JULIA SCOTT CAREY piano Richard Mitrano has generously sponsored Julia Scott Carey for the 2023-24 concert season.

Julia Scott Carey began her music training at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, where she received the Lanier Prize for Most Outstanding Graduating Senior. She was one of the first students admitted to the Harvard-New England Conservatory joint degree program, through which she received a master’s degree in composition. She received a second master’s degree in collaborative piano from Boston University.

Julia is the Minister of Music at the Central Square Congregational Church in Bridgewater, where she leads the adult and children’s choirs from the keyboard. She is one of the accompanists for the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and the Boston Symphony Children’s Choir.

She also serves as the accompanist for the Metropolitan Chorale of Brookline, the Dedham Choral Society, the Boston College University Chorale, and the Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus. She previously served as the pianist for the Handel and Haydn Society’s Educational Vocal Quartet, the Wellesley College Chamber Singers, and the Boston Children’s Chorus. She is also a founder and core ensemble member of Juventas New Music Ensemble.

As a composer, her orchestral works have been performed by numerous orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops, and her works have been broadcast on national TV and radio in the United States and in Russia. She was the youngest composer ever published by the Theodore Presser Company. She was also chosen to arrange a folk song for Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Chang to play at Deval Patrick’s inaugural ball.

She has served as a music director or accompanist for over forty opera and musical theater productions. Productions for which Julia was the music director include Cy Coleman’s City of Angels with the Longwood Players and Alexander Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg with OperaHub. Reviewing a performance Julia conducted of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi with the Hubbard Hall Opera Company, the Berkshire Hudson Arts Review said “the players and singers were not just led, but were energized. Schicchi is a tough score, and Julia stood the test.”

Also passionate about early music, Julia music directed a staged performance of four of Louis-Nicolas Clérambault’s Cantatas with the Harvard Early Music Society, which was taken on tour to Versailles. She also music directed a performance of John Eccles’ Semele with the same organization. Speaking of her performance as a harpsichordist in the Boston Opera Collaborative’s production of Le nozze di Figaro, the Boston Musical Intelligencer said, “The unwavering harpsichord accompaniment of Julia Carey richly and expressively textured the recitatives.”

Julia currently works as a musicianship teacher and department coordinator at the Suzuki School in Newton. She also taught an undergraduate music theory class at Boston College, served as a keyboard harmony teaching fellow at NEC, and worked as a musical theatre teacher at the Belvoir Terrace Arts Camp and the Boston Children’s Theatre.

Julia lives in Winchester with her husband and her daughter. In addition to music, she loves cooking, running, and spending time on Cape Cod.
