JUVENTAS NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE OUR MISSION Juventas New Music Ensemble is a contemporary chamber group with a special focus on emerging voices. Juventas shares classical music as a vibrant, living art form. We bring audiences music from a diverse array of composers that live in today’s world and respond to our time.
WHO WE ARE Since our founding in 2005, we have performed the music of more than 300 living composers. Juventas has earned a reputation as a curator with a keen eye for new talent. We open doors for composers with top-notch professional performances that present their work in the best possible light.

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Juventas Community, Our organization is stronger than ever. In our recently completed 2022-23 season, we performed for over 4,000 in-person audience members, a new record for our ensemble. Our team is working tirelessly to make Juventas concerts accessible to everyone who wants to join us. Financial barriers? No problem! Last year, over 15% of our ticket buyers came through our Music for All program, which offers $1 tickets to anyone who can’t afford our regular prices. Can’t get to the concert hall? No problem! Over 5,000 people joined our live-stream broadcasts, available for free to anyone with an internet connection. In our concerts, audience members experience a lineup of composers as diverse as the communities we serve. Our 2022-23 season showcased the music of 37 composers. Of these, 41% are people of color and 46% identify as female or gender-nonbinary. Our ensemble shows that contemporary chamber music holds an important place in our community, with deeply resonant works from composers who live in our world and respond to our time. Everything described in these pages is possible because of your support, and for that, we are eternally grateful. Sincerely,

HIGHLIGHTS Juventas’s 2022-23 Season was a banner year with countless moments we will never forget. From a packed house– or lawn– to cherished collaborations, we are incredibly proud of this year’s achievements and can’t wait to share them with you.
A GARDEN FILLED TO THE BRIM
On two perfect June evenings at the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, fresh air and flower-filled breezes mixed with the sounds of our musicians tuning up. Bows and mallets at the ready, the 171-acre garden began to buzz– and not just because of the bees hopping from bud to bud. Audience members streamed into the garden to enjoy Juventas’s evening serenade in what was our largest audience ever, almost triple the size of our 2022 crowd! Over two nights, we welcomed 1,000 + guests at golden hour, including many first time patrons and those returning to “Music in Bloom ‘’ for the third year in a row. Families strolled, picnicked, and even celebrated birthdays with grandparents from across the ocean. Despite a near run-in with a rainstorm, “Music in Bloom 2023” was truly a memorable milestone. As we watched the audience’s smiles, we were reminded that this is why we make music. 8

IN COLLABORATION: CLOUD ANTHEM “Until…” is the key word of Richard Blanco’s resonant poem “Cloud Anthem.” Once Barack Obama’s second inaugural poet, Blanco begs us all to be better and build a brighter future “as one together in one single sky.” Blanco’s potent message was the centerpiece of our 2023 Season Opener featuring the shimmering, expressive music of Oliver Caplan and celebrating his brilliant five years as Juventas Artistic Director. Conducted by Dan Perkins, director of the talented New Hampshire Master Chorale, the concert also celebrated the choir’s 20th season, and featured the emotionally immersive poetry of Maya Angelou, Hannah Fries, Naseem Rakha, and Meghan Guidry. Among the lush musical language was the world premiere of Worth the Wait, a gorgeous setting of Guidry’s particularly heartfelt poem written for the marriage of Caplan and his husband Chris Beagan. Both the opening night of “Cloud Anthem” and its twin peformance in Laconia, New Hampshire, welcomed a full house and were truly unforgettable. Our collaboration with Dan and the Master Chorale resulted in not only the exciting opportunity for cross-pollination of audiences, but an essential uplifiting of spirits that left our audiences a little lighter than when they arrived. An inspiring, joyful performance, “Cloud Anthem” sucessfully launched our season with the important mantra: humanity is at our strongest when we unite under the banner of hope, equality, and love for all.

OUR ANGEL RETURNS! Juventas’s 2022-23 Fiscal Year saw the most successful fundraising campaign in the history of our organization! Over 2 weeks, 228 people donated $11,193 to support our work and spread the love of new music. This year’s success was spearheaded by an angel donor, an extremely generous friend of Juventas who re-upped last year’s pledge to help galvanize the Juventas community and broaden our base of support. The challenge: if 200 people donated by April 15, our angel would make a gift of $20,000. Collectively, this pledge and the incredible contributions of our growing donor roster were put towards our mission to: • Raise artist compensation to support the livelihood of our musicians. • Increase staff capacity to build a stronger organization. • Grow our new “Music for All” program, which offers $1 tickets to anyone who can’t afford our regular prices, no questions asked. 15% of tickets sold for our most recent concert were purchased through this program! • Continue investing in state-of-the-art live stream broadcasts, so everyone, everywhere can join us. To our angel: words cannot express how grateful we are for your steadfast support. To all who pledged to join the challenge: YOU are what makes the music sing! Thank you for helping us reach yet another amazing milestone.

OUR CALL FOR SCORES WINNERS Our 2022 Call for Scores was answered by three outstanding composers whose music invoked a call for a better, brighter world in the face of turmoil. These potent pieces were chosen from among hundreds of moving submissions, selected for their unique voice and momentum, and placed on our “Concert for Peace,” and “Music in Bloom” programs. Especially now, as troubling news pours in and threatens to numb our senses, we need music like the work of these stunning composers to help us process pain and understand just what it means to believe in peace.

“Maori Lament was written immediately after the terrorist attack on Christ Church, New Zealand in March 2019. In the early hours of that morning I drafted Maori Lament as a tribute to my family and friends in New Zealand and as a personal effort to try and make sense of a senseless act of violence. The Maori are the indigenous people from New Zealand. Their music, dance, and culture is one that I admire and have been fortunate to experience up close. The only word that is set at the end of the piece means ‘family’ in Maori.”
“August 24, 2019. February 23 2020. March 13, 2020. May 25th, 2020. On each of these days, a light was permanently erased from existence. Human beings who loved and were loved perished at the hands of hate and those who hated. Every day, racism bleeds its way into the foundation and reaches of our society to strip away beauty, life, and joy. As we call to those voices looking for meaning in their eternal demise, we hear nothing in response other than ‘Why?’”
“Earthshine is the phenomenon of the Earth’s glow radiating onto the moon. I find this is analogous to how our inner glows radiate into the universe. When we are content with ourselves and find our inner joy, we are able to radiate that energy back towards the people around us. Especially in a time of such constant turmoil, we are in need of emanating peace. This chain reaction is how we are able to enact change – allowing ourselves to be the light that others need to solve the world’s greatest struggles.”

JULIA SCOTT CAREY BEST OPERA RECORDING Our very own Julia Scott Carey was the orchestra and rehearsal pianist for the BEST OPERA RECORDING Nominee The Lord of Cries, composed by John Corigliano and presented by Boston Modern Orchestra Project in collaboration with Odyssey Opera. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT DAN PERKINS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR OF THE NEW HAMPSHIRE MASTER CHORALE Our “Cloud Anthem” conductor and dear friend Dan Perkins has received the 2023 Choral Arts New England Lifetime Achievement award for his contributions to choral singing and its culture, bringing music and joy to all. The Lifetime Achievement Award has been presented annually since 1994, with Dan joining the ranks alongside big names like composer Gwynneth Walker and Tanglewood Conductor John Oliver. OUR TEAM IS MAKING WAVES SHOUTOUTS TO... ALUMNI IN ACTION ANTHONY GREEN PREMIERE AT LINCOLN CENTER Last June, New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts premiered composer Anthony Green’s work Arrival for contrabass, voice, and electronics. This stunning acheivement was a part of the Summer For the City series, curated by MacArthur fellow Kyle Abraham and centered around composer-choreographer collaborations. Anthony made his Juventas debut during “Kelley Hollis: Center Stage” with his piece ...and all that is good featuring the words of Phillis Wheatley, and his music continues to move and amaze us. KATY ABBOTT COMPOSER IN-RESIDENCE, MSO Composer Katy Abbott was recently appointed as the Melboune Symphony Orchestra’s 2024 Composer In-Residence! She is currently composing a large-scale work for this brilliant group of musicians: Hidden Thoughts III: Stories of Awe for narrator, 2 voices and orchestra. A key part of her composition process has been collecting tales of wonder from the public which she plans to incorporate into the music. Katy’s works are often engaged with the details of human connection, as you may have experienced listening to our performance of Katy’s piece Making Angels on our 2021 “One World” program. KIAN RAVAEI BARLOW GENERAL COMMISSION RECIPIENT Among a talented pool of 178 applicants, composer Kian Ravaei has been chosen to recieve Brigham Young University’s prestigious Barlow General Commission Grant! He will be writing a new work for the Abeo Quartet, Julliard’s Graduate Srting Quartet In-Residence. You may remember Kian’s beautiful music from our recent performance of his Family Photos on our “Source Code” concert program. We can’t wait to hear the Kian’s piece! BENJAMIN PERRY WENZELBERG ASCAP MORTON GOULD YOUNG COMPOSER AWARD A huge congrats to composer and librettist Benjamin Perry Wenzelberg, whose new opera NIGHTTOWN recieved the reknowned ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award. The world premiere recording — by Lowell House Opera, who commissioned the work — was then screened by the James Joyce Centre Dublin as an official selection of the 2023 Bloomsday Film Festival. Juventas first performed Benjamin’s music in May 2015, when Benjamin was just 16! We premiered his piece From the Cave under in a program entitled “Music in Motion.”

OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE We are building on recent momentum to lift Juventas to the next level. Read about how we’re doing here: By 2024, we aim: To hire a full-time general manager who can support increased performance activity. As of December 2023, we are 63% of the way toward this goal! As a first step, we created a part-time General Manager position, 25/hours per week, and promoted our former Marketing Coordinator, Joseph Sedarski, into this role. We are seeking funding to to bring this position all the way to full time.
63% By 2026, we aim: For musician compensation to be in parity with union rates. Since last year we have increased our musician compensation by 15%, covering a quarter of the gap between our current rates and union rates.
25% By 2030, we aim: To fund an endowment that can provide a stable income stream to supplement other sources. By 2035, we aim: For Juventas to own its own venue that we can deploy for Juventas performances, and rent at affordable rates to other ensembles in the Boston area.
