FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Juventas’s 2021-22 season! Tonight is our first hybrid concert, welcoming both an in-person audience in Massachusetts, and viewers around the world, who are watching our live stream broadcast on YouTube. Wherever you are and however you’re joining us, we couldn’t be more thrilled to share this music together.

This evening’s concert is bittersweet. While we celebrate our return to the concert hall, we also reflect on this difficult moment. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, today is also the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on our nation. Tonight’s program takes stock of these two generational tragedies that altered the course of our society.

Joe Jaxson, Robert Ruohola and Cole Reyes are winners of our 2021 Call for Scores. A panel of Juventas musicians, board and staff selected their works from a pool of 125 submissions from around the world. At ages 21-26, these three composers are rising lights. They have so much to say already, and we can’t wait to see how their voices develop in the years ahead.

We are extremely proud to have commissioned the capstone piece on tonight’s program, Millennial Elegy by Stephanie Ann Boyd, with poetry by Jessica Lynn Suchon. Juventas has collaborated with Stephanie extensively over the past seven years, an artistic relationship that we treasure. Stephanie’s works engage with today’s world through a compositional voice that is deeply romantic and unmistakably of our time. We are honored to premiere this important new work, a piece that marks this moment with sensitivity and passion.

Thank you for supporting us through the challenges of the past 18 months. Because of you, Juventas not only exists today, but is stronger than ever. While many things remain uncertain in the year ahead, one thing is rock solid: our commitment to stick with you, our community, through this difficult time, and beyond.

IN THE COMPOSERS’ OWN WORDS Joe Jaxson | Persevering (2020) Inspired by recent events of 2020, Persevering is a three movement work with a purpose to bring forth the attributes of perseverance, showcasing three common scenarios. This is an interpretation based from personal experience. The movements are titled: “Gradually Overwhelming”, “Loneful Endeavors”, and “Worth the Wait.”

Robert Ruohola | Gates of Light (2021) When starting to compose Gates of Light, I was asked to write something that would reflect our current situation. I wanted to write something that would give the listeners a sense of optimism, while simultaneously addressing the pain and loss inflicted by the pandemic. In my interpretation, Gates of Light associates with death, but also more generally with getting out of a dark situation. This is my way of commemorating those who passed away while also giving the audience a sense of a better future.

Oliver Caplan | Is There a Word That Means Return (2010) I wrote this piece with author Meghan Guidry in 2010 and it has new resonance for us in 2021, as we mourn the toll of COVID-19.

Meghan’s autobiographical lyrics mourn the loss of her father, juxtaposing memories of their holiday traditions with loneliness left by his absence. Universally, she speaks to the bittersweet nature of annual rituals as moments when we have heightened awareness for the empty chairs at our tables and the memories they summon.

The music pairs father and daughter in a wistful duet across space and time, child speaking prose, parent calling back through song. Each has a theme – the father’s slow and lyrical, the daughter’s twinkling and mystical – with a melody reminiscent of a music-box to represent their shared past.

We dedicate tonight’s performance to everyone who has lost a loved one to this horrible pandemic.

Cole Reyes | To Be Confident (2021) There are many lessons which we must learn over the course of our lifetime.

However, these lessons often prove to be much harder than anything we learn during formal education. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, I had the opportunity to reflect upon the lessons that I needed to still learn. We follow the story of the narrator (in this case the soprano) and bear witness to a transformation from timid apprehension to soaring assurance in who they are.

Stephanie Ann Boyd | Millennial Elegy (2021) World Premiere Juventas Commission Millennial Elegy is a piece created in partnership with award-winning poet Jessica Lynn Suchon. Commissioned by the Juventas New Music Ensemble, this piece has been written from our hearts for the people this work is dedicated to: the victims of Covid-19 and their loved ones, and everyone whose own heart will be aching on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

These two tragedies have been the moments for those of my generation and culture where time stopped in a public and horrifying way. Writing this piece has been a very tender, at times difficult process, and how could it not be? The far off memories of twenty years ago, being ten years old and asking my grandfather what was happening and having him, a man who I felt knew everything, solemnly tell me “Stephanie...I don’t know” mingled with the much more vivid memories of being in New York City in the spring of 2020, watching Covid cases grow exponentially every day as my partner and I dutifully wore gloves and masks and avoided all other people as we waited for...something we didn’t know. It was something that had no shape but we could hear it in the relentless sirens down West End Avenue and we could see it in the vacant canyons that used to be the busy streets of New York. And we came to know it in the deaths of family members and loved ones that came in the months that followed.

Jessica and I were working together in the final months before Covid-19 hit, and we were in 5th grade classrooms in Ann Arbor, Michigan, less than a mile away from each other on September 11th, 2001. I’m so very grateful to the musicians of Juventas who have given so much time and care to my music many times in recent years, to Oliver for giving me the space to make this work, and to Jessica for helping me make that space three-dimensional in ways I hope may be a comfort to those who listen to this piece.

Our dance began in charcoal winds, cold steps, a break of visible breaths. My father and me underneath the Blue Tree.

Blue lights spun the circumference of bare branches. Electric stars close enough to touch. The truth of what it was burned like cold-scratch at our lips.

He held me high inside the better things blackness and root-bound stars had to share. In mismatched steps, we danced.

A prayer with no intention. A path in radiating lines, footfall on frost to solitary winter songs, wind and bough.

Father:

And that was how we held the world intact, how seasons cohered to spells. And those lights became a language we kept all to ourselves.

Daughter: We contend with empty chairs and distant steps. My father’s

ghost. Blue and silver and black. The colors of a prayer still

beneath our tree. Our constellation hinged on a word we never

shared, now hidden in table legs he carved like canopic jars. His

heart still lingers in its oil finish. Mahogany limbs. A golem on spiral-carved feet.

Daughter: Is there a word Father: Is there a word Daughter: that makes wood beat?

Father: that makes wood beat?

Father: reanimates our hands Both: interlocking prayers Daughter: breathes him back to blue-lit branches and our dance, Father: and our dance, prayer enough to outlive the blood that’s been cut?

Their last lights pool over table tops, gauze stretched like snow drifts over the gash. So we pack their faces into our palms, a convergence of lines that spell where we were, we met, where starlight spreads across this table, bilocation breaks and my hand shivers like the wind stealing words from his lips because the stars have bloomed, descended and to name it makes them recede to other winter constellations: hunters and heavy bears stalking scales in our sky.

We hold their distance in the scent of winter, trace them over

silver-spun ground, read wills in snowfall sound, dark trunks and

tables where amber returns to cerulean lights and lifts those

we’ve loved: how they raised our bodies to the center of the

stars where all closures crisp to memories stored dormant in our

palms, to a body of wood and dark mnemonic stars spiraling a

trunk that holds black soil to the story of how we made myths of lower constellations.

Father: That’s the common metamorphosis: flesh to words to light.

And left behind, we weave alchemy of that afterglow to keep their stars suspended in our sky.

I. March comes in like a lion preceding a vicious menagerie.

It screeches still. Every time a siren howls through town, its red shreds the curtains.

We whisper the names of everyone we hope it is not, plead that they will be safe beneath our tongues. The sirens throbbing wail taunts: maybe this time your sister, your husband.

Maybe this time a child. Every time there is a siren, there is another siren. March leaves like a hungrier lion.

II. Time floats above us both still and frantic like dragonfly wings skimming the water’s surface.

Somewhere, someone smells honeysuckle for the last time. Someone wishes their child goodnight.

Someone flosses a thin emerald blade of grass between their bare toes. Someone drops a spoon in the sink and it rings like a bell. Someone singes and numbs the tip of their tongue on their morning coffee. It should be more romantic, that final day. We should wake with a heart wonderfully swollen, with the impulse to cradle moments like a newborn. Someone in a hospital bed understands this will be the last summer.

III. We practice holding our breath.

IV. We sleepwalk into the cold. We know the winter will be unbearable. We write your name in the snow, with tired fingers, but the wind snatches it into its fists.

We write your name like an open invitation in the frosted windows, but the cold seals it back up again.

The future stretches in front of us like a hand in the dark.

We cannot find its fingers. We catch a snowflake on our tongue and call it by your name, and suddenly it is gone.

V. March comes in like a whistling specter.

March is a cruel mirror. We see pear blossoms in the warped glass and know there are things that will never come back to us. How many angels dance on the head of a pin? On the tip of a needle? Too many to name. Still, we try.

March goes out like a prayer. Most nights we are still dreaming of you.

COMPOSERS STEPHANIE ANN BOYD b. 1990 Michigan-born, Manhattan-based American composer Stephanie Ann Boyd (b. 1990) writes melodic music about women’s memoirs and the natural world for symphonic and chamber ensembles.

Her work has been performed in nearly all 50 states and has been commissioned by musicians and organizations in 37 countries. Boyd’s five ballets include works choreographed by New York City Ballet principal dancers Lauren Lovette, Ashley Bouder, NYCB soloist Peter Walker, and XAOC Contemporary Ballet’s Eryn Renee Young. Eero, a ballet commissioned by Access Contemporary Music and Open House New York, was written for the grand opening of the TWA Hotel at JFK Airport. Her music has been praised as “attractive lyricism” (Gramophone), “[with] ethereal dissonances” (Boston Globe), “[music that] didn’t let itself be eclipsed” (Texas Classical Review), “arrestingly poetic” (BMOP), and “wide ranging, imaginative” (Portland Press Herald).

Boyd’s music has been commissioned and performed by concertmasters of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony, the New York City Ballet Orchestra, the Des Moines Symphony, the Faroe Islands Symphony, the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Smith Symphony, the Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, and principal players in the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Her music has been commissioned and/ or played by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, the New England Conservatory Philharmonic, the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra, the New York Jazzharmonic, the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, the Roosevelt University Orchestra, the Eureka Ensemble, the JVL Festival Orchestra, the Texas State University Symphony, the Cremona International Academy Orchestra, the UW La Crosse Symphony, the Detroit Civic Orchestra, and the El Paso Youth Symphony. Her work has been presented by the Thalia and her Sisters concert series, the Moirae Ensemble, and Sandcastle New Music in New York City; Æpex Contemporary Music in Michigan; Juventas New Music, Collage New Music, and the New Gallery Concert Series in Boston; Cincinnati Soundbox, and others.

Stephanie has worked with conductors such as Andrew Litton, Lina Gonzales, Earl Lee, Nathan Aspinall, Cliff Colnot, Gill Rose, Julian Benichou, Kristo Kondakci, and Kevin Fitzgerald.

OLIVER CAPLAN b. 1982 Award-winning American composer Oliver Caplan writes melodies that nourish our souls, offering a voice of hope in an uncertain world. Inspired by the resiliency of the human spirit and beauty of the natural world, his music celebrates stories of social justice, conservation and community.

Mr. Caplan’s works have been performed in 200 performances nationwide. He has been commissioned by the Atlanta Chamber Players, Bella Piano Trio, Bronx Arts Ensemble, Brookline Symphony Orchestra, Columbia University Wind Ensemble and New Hampshire Master Chorale, among others. Winner of a Special Citation for the American Prize in Orchestral Composition, additional recognitions include two Veridian Symphony Competition Wins, the Fifth House Ensemble Competition Grand Prize, eight ASCAP Awards, and fellowships at Ragdale, VCCA and the Brush Creek Foundation. Caplan’s 2017 album You Are Not Alone was featured on Apple Music’s Classical A-list and streamed over 200,000 times.

Recordings of his music also include his new 2021 release Watershed; 2012 debut album Illuminations; and tracks on Trio Siciliano’s Exploring Music (2018, U07 Records) and the Sinfonietta of Riverdale’s New World Serenade (2016, Albany Records).

JOE JAXSON b. 2000 Joe Jaxson is an award-winning student composer at James Madison University studying for his B.M. in Composition. Joe pursues versatility in writing in numerous styles and genres ranging from Contemporary Classical to Cinematic Film Scoring.

“Music to me means expressing the things that intrigue me; to find and elicit the emotions I experience and to be able to convey those emotions into the music I write.” Joe’s piece Fanfare and Overture was selected as a winner of the University of Southern California Student Symphony Orchestra’s 2020 Call for Scores.

His piece Persevering was selected as the winner of the JMNew Music Ensemble 2021 Call for Scores and received honorable mention in the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Awards and the newEar 2020-2021 Composition Contest.

Joe was also a finalist in the Press Start Inaugural Composer Competition, a selected composer of the FivebyFive Modern Chamber Music Call for Scores and Ideas 2020, selected composer for the Summer 2021 SPLICE Institute, and a participant in NYU’s 2020 Film Scoring Workshop where he worked with successful Film and TV composers Mark Snow and Michael A. COLE REYES b. 1998 Cole Reyes is a Brooklyn-based composer, educator, conductor and performer originally from the Chicagoland Area. His music has been awarded by groups such as IL-ACDA, the National Flute Association, Lux Choir, newEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, the Hunstville Master Chorale, and many others. He has collaborated with artists such as the JACK Quartet, Transient Canvas, Dashon Burton, the Momenta Quartet, and Unheard-of//Ensemble.

He received his undergraduate degrees in music and mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis.

While there, he had the opportunity to study with Christopher Stark and LJ White. He currently attends New York University where he is pursuing a master’s degree in Concert Music Composition, studying with Robert Honstein, Michael Gordon, and Julia Wolfe. www.colereyesmusic.com

ROBERT RUOHOLA b. 1995 Robert Ruohola is a composer from Helsinki, Finland, whose influences range from Sibelius to pop and beyond. He has composed music for the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra and Helsinki Police Band among others, and his piece The Sun, my Father was awarded 3rd prize in Eviva and Exaudio’s composition competition. Ruohola’s core musical values, which include perceptual freshness and instantaneity of expression, cohere across a diverge range of musical means. MUSICIANS JULIA SCOTT CAREY piano

Julia Scott Carey is the Minister of Music at the Central Square Congregational Church in Bridgewater, where she leads the adult and children’s choirs from the keyboard. She is one of the accompanists for the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and the Boston Symphony Children’s Choir. She also serves as the accompanist for the Metropolitan Chorale of Brookline, the Dedham Choral Society, the Boston College University Chorale, and the Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus. She previously served as the pianist for the Handel and Haydn Society’s Educational Vocal Quartet, the Wellesley College Chamber Singers, and the Boston Children’s Chorus.

As a composer, Julia’s orchestral works have been performed by numerous orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops, and her works have been broadcast on national TV and radio in the United States and in Russia. She was the youngest composer ever published by the Theodore Presser Company. She was also chosen to arrange a folk song for Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Chang to play at Deval Patrick’s inaugural ball.

Julia has served as a music director or accompanist for over forty opera and musical theater productions. Productions for which Julia was the music director include Cy Coleman’s City of Angels with the Longwood Players and Alexander Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg with OperaHub. Reviewing a performance Julia conducted of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi with the Hubbard Hall Opera Company, the Berkshire Hudson Arts Review said “the players and singers were not just led, but were energized. Schicchi is a tough score, and Julia stood the test.”

Julia began her music training at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, where she received the Lanier Prize for Most Outstanding Graduating Senior. She was one of the first students admitted to the Harvard-New England Conservatory joint degree program, through which she received a master’s degree in composition. She received a second master’s degree in collaborative piano from Boston University.

MINJIN CHUNG cello

Leslie Jacobson Kaye and Richard Kaye have generously sponsored Minjin Chung for the 2021-22 concert season.

Minjin Chung is a cellist based in Boston who enjoys an active career as a freelance musician and is on the cello faculty of the Dedham School of Music. Praised by the Boston Music Intelligencer for her “beautiful sweeping melody played with grace” she has appeared in the top concert halls in the world such as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, and the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. She is an avid performer of new music and has premiered countless new works throughout her years as a student and in her professional career. As an orchestral player, she has attended the Aspen Music Festival as a New Horizon Fellow and has performed with the Sinfonia da Camera, Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the New World Symphony.

As a soloist, she has received awards from the Richmond Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, Virginia Lions Club Bland Music Competition, Virginia String Teachers Association Solo Competition, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Concerto Competition. Born in South Korea, Ms. Chung moved to the U.S. at the age of 5 and grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia where she began her musical studies. Upon falling madly in love with classical music at the age of 17, she graduated from high school a year early to focus on preparing for music school auditions. She was awarded a full tuition scholarship to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a student of Dmitry Kouzov and received her master’s degree at the New England Conservatory as a student of Natasha Brofsky.

In her free time, she loves to paint, go to the beach, and take long walks with her dog, Jackie.

KELLEY HOLLIS soprano

Karen and Fred Ruymann have generously sponsored Kelley Hollis for the 2021-22 concert season.

Kelley Hollis is a classically trained soprano known for her interpretations of new and lesser known works. Last year Kelley was featured on the album Arnold Rosner’s Requiem (Toccata Records), recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at

Abbey Road Studios. In 2018 she performed a concert at the Prague Castle in the Czech Republic, along with a series of recitals in cities throughout the country, as a featured artist with the Americké jaro festival.

In addition to singing with Juventas, Kelley performs with and serves on the board of Opera on Tap Boston. In 2019 she sang the role of Rosalinda in MassOpera’s critically acclaimed production of Die Fledermaus, and premiered the role of Juana in the Omar Najmi’s En el ardiente oscuridad. Her other opera roles include Mimi in Puccini’s La femme boheme, Beth in Adamo’s Little Women (Metrowest Opera), Eliza in Muhly’s Dark Sisters (Third Eye Theater Ensemble); Florencia Grimaldi in Catan’s Florencia en el Amazonas, Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Micaela in Le Tragedie de Carmen, Harper in Eötvös’ Angels in America (BU Opera Institute) and Nina in Pasatieri’s The Seagull (Opera del West).

Ms. Hollis has performed twice at Boston Symphony Hall: In 2016 she appeared as the First Orphan in The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s concert production of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier alongside Renee Fleming and Susan Graham, and in 2015 she was the soprano soloist for Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, performing with the BU Symphony Orchestra. Her most recent concert repertoire includes Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, Handel’s Messiah, and Faure’s Requiem.

In 2014, Ms. Hollis was a finalist for Lyric Opera Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center and in 2011 Kelley received an encouragement award at the district level from the Metropolitan Opera National Council. Kelley Hollis received both her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from Northwestern University and is a graduate of the Boston University Opera Institute. Kelley is also a graduate of A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts.

ANNE HOWARTH French horn

Alex Ripley and Ted Steinemann have generously sponsored Anne Howarth for the 2021-22 concert season.

Horn player Anne Howarth has a passion for small group collaborations and the opportunities they offer performers and audience members alike to forge personal connections with the music and with each other. She is deeply curious about the ways in which shared musical experiences can invite deeper dialogue and contemplation.

Anne is a founding member and Outreach Director of the mixed-instrumentation chamber group Radius Ensemble and is a senior member of the wind quintet Vento Chiaro. A strong proponent of new music, Anne has commissioned works for chamber ensemble as an individual and with colleagues. As a freelance orchestral player in demand in the greater Boston area, Anne holds Principal Horn chairs with the Lexington Symphony and Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra and occasionally performs with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, among others. Curious about the intersection between live music and movement, Anne has collaborated with Monkeyhouse and dancer/choreographer Karen Krolak at First Night Boston, the Oberon, and Tufts University.

Anne is a native of the Detroit area, holds undergraduate degrees in both Horn Performance and Environmental Studies from Oberlin Conservatory and Oberlin College respectively, and earned her Master of Music in Performance at New England Conservatory.

Anne teaches horn and coaches chamber music at Tufts University and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), maintains a private studio, and is on the on faculties of the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, the Brookline Music School, and the Milton Afterschool Lesson Program.

WOLCOTT HUMPHREY clarinet

Clarinetist Wolcott Humphrey, originally from western New York, earned a B.M. in Clarinet Performance from Ithaca College in 2006, and went on to earn an M.M. and a Graduate Diploma in Clarinet Performance from the New England Conservatory in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

Wolcott has studied clarinet with E. Michael Richards, Richard Faria, William Wrzesien, and Craig Nordstrom.

Humphrey is passionate about new music, and has performed in contemporary chamber ensembles in Ithaca, Providence (Ensemble Parallax), and Boston (Juventas and Sound Icon) as well as at the Charles E. Gamper Festival of Contemporary Music. He was also in the premiere performance of White Snake Projects’ comic opera REV. 23 in Boston.

Humphrey was the principal clarinetist of the Salt Lake Symphonic Winds, performing Martin Ellerby’s Clarinet Concerto with the group in 2011. While living in Providence, he was the principal clarinetist of Fall River Symphony, the co-principal clarinetist of the American Band, and a member of several woodwind

chamber groups. Humphrey is the assistant principal clarinetist of the Met Winds, performing the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto with the group at the Association of Concert Bands convention in New Jersey and at the Festival of Bands in Boston.

Humphrey performs with Brookline Symphony, and the chamber ensembles Some Assembly Required and the Kalliope Ensemble. Wolcott has been the core clarinetist of Juventas New Music Ensemble since 2012.

SHO KATO

flute (guest artist) Sho Kato completed his Master of Music degree at the New England Conservatory under the tutelage of Boston Symphony piccoloist Cynthia Meyers.

A versatile performer, he has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the Cape Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rochester City Ballet, the Eclectet Woodwind Quintet, the Eastman Philharmonia and Eastman Wind Ensemble. Sho was also a finalist in the 2017-2018 James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition.

Devoted to education and outreach, he has performed in concerts and clinics in Nagoya, Japan, Boston, Seattle, Rochester, Geneva (NY), and Key West. He is a flute instructor with Note-Worthy Experiences Music Studio based in Sudbury, MA. He was also involved in the Community Performances and Partnerships Program as a Musical Storytelling Fellow at the New England Conservatory where he combined children’s stories with music to bring music to Boston area schools.

Sho received his BM at the Eastman School of Music with Bonita Boyd.

ANDY PEASE

conductor (guest artist) Andrew D. Pease serves as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Music at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, where he directs the Wind Ensemble and Brass Ensemble and teaches conducting, orchestration, composition, and brass methods. He is also co-conductor of the Catskill Valley Wind Ensemble. He is committed to bringing the wind band repertoire to life through informed and engaged performance. In the early part of his career, he helped to put the wind band back on the map in New York City. While music director of the

Columbia University Wind Ensemble from 2002-2013, he brought wind band standards and new music to New York students and audiences. He also began a student guest conductor program with Columbia’s Teachers College and helped to start the Columbia Festival of Winds, an annual fundraising festival for inner-city music education that brought the wind bands of the New York City area together for a day of concerts. Concurrently, he conducted the community band Columbia Summer Winds, which inaugurated its Outdoor Composition Contest under his watch. He completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting at Arizona State University, where his teachers included Gary Hill, Wayne Bailey, and William Reber. While there, he conducted the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and various chamber groups, including the professional Sun Valley Chamber Winds, which he founded in 2015. His work with these groups earned him the 2017 American Prize in Wind Band Conducting at the collegiate level.

Dr. Pease’s conducting career began at Dartmouth College, where he conducted the Marching Band, Chamber Orchestra, Steel Drum Band, and an honors thesis as an undergraduate. He received Master of Arts degrees in Music Education from Columbia University’s Teachers College and in Wind Conducting from Hofstra University. His past conducting teachers include Max Culpepper, Melinda O’Neal, Dino Anagnost, and Peter Boonshaft, as well as clinics with other leading figures in the conducting world. In 2010 he was a Conducting Fellow at the first ever Juilliard School Conducting Workshop for Music Educators, where he studied with Jim Smith, George Stelluto, and Virginia Allen. Dr. Pease is also in demand as an arranger and orchestrator. His arrangements have been cast in such diverse media as steel band, orchestra, and recorders, and have included styles ranging from Christmas carols to tango to popular movie and video game themes.

TOM SCHMIDT

One of Boston’s versatile free-lance percussionists, Thomas Schmidt has performed with The Boston Philharmonic, The Portland Symphony (Maine), Rhode Island Philharmonic, New Bedford Symphony, Placido Domingo, Boston Landmarks Orchestra, Indian Hill Symphony, Lexington Symphony, Symphony New Hampshire, and The Brevard Music Centers Faculty Orchestra. A regular down in the pit orchestra, he has played for The 75th Anniversary Tour of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Opera Maine, The Boston Lyric Opera, various tours with the New England Opera, and the Da Capo Opera Company. Equally at home playing in a jazz big band or drum-set for a musical, Thomas has performed with the Boston Brass All

Stars Big Band and has been the drum-set player for countless musicals in the New England area. He has performed with new music ensembles ALEA III and Dinosaur Annex as well as various choruses, such as Masterworks Chorale, Harvard-Radcliff Chorus, Back Bay Chorale, Boston Celia Society, Coro Allegro, Chorus ProMusica, The Brookline Chorus, and The Newburyport Chorale. Thomas is on the faculty at The Berklee College of Music where he teaches Orchestral Percussion, Marimba, Vibraphone, and Drum Set. Thomas is a student of Salvatore Rabbio, Pat Hollenbeck, Nancy Zeltsman, John Grimes, and Dr. Stuart Marrs. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Percussion Performance from The University of Maine, and his Masters Degree in Percussion Performance from the Boston Conservatory. Thomas is a Zildjian endorsed artist.

RYAN SHANNON

Ryan Shannon began his musical journey in the mountains of Colorado at five years old when his father, an amateur pianist, gave him his first violin.

Sensing his love of music, his parents made it possible for him to attend the Walnut Hill School for the Arts. Ryan continued his studies at the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Lucy Chapman and Nicholas Kitchen, graduating in 2014. As a student, Ryan had the life-changing opportunity to attend the Center for the Development of Arts Leaders program at From The Top. Through this year-long partnership with the Hope Lodge, a residence for cancer patients, He learned that music can bring together those who are struggling through difficult circumstances. In recent years he has worked to bring this love to as many people as possible. He does this as an educator, as a member of Palaver Strings, and as an explorer of new music with Juventas New Music Ensemble, whose vivacious energy creates a powerful connection between music and the hearts of those who listen.

RYAN STOLL

bass-baritone (guest artist) Ryan Stoll, bass-baritone, is a Missouri-native and is currently based in Boston where he has appeared with Odyssey Opera as Laurent in Tchaikovsky’s Maid of Orleans and as The Jailer in Norman Dello Joio’s The Trial at Rouen which received a Grammy nomination in 2021 and is now available to stream on Spotify.

A lover of new opera, Ryan portrayed Guy Cotter in Everest, appeared in Jake Heggie’s Moby Dick, and performed in the world premiere of Dan Shore’s Freedom Ride with Chicago Opera Theater. He has workshopped Robert Aldridge’s Sister Carrie, Stacy Garrop’s The Transformation of Jane Doe, and Felicia Chen’s The Life and Death(s) of Alan Turing.

He has also performed in Song from the Uproar with Chautauqua Opera, Evan Mack’s Roscoe with Albany Symphony Orchestra, and Silent Night with Fort Worth Opera.

He appeared as a Young Artist with Chautauqua Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Sarasota Opera, Central City Opera, and Chicago Opera Theater and joined Opera Saratoga’s Young Artist Program virtually in the summer of 2020.

During the pandemic, Ryan has worked with Opera Saratoga, Boston Opera Collaborative, Opera on Tap, and is thrilled to be making his Juventas New Music Ensemble debut.
