WHO WE ARE

Since its founding in 2005, Juventas has performed the music of more than 300 living composers. The ensemble has earned a reputation as a curator with a keen eye for new talent. It opens doors for composers with top-notch professional performances that present their work in the best possible light.

Juventas has a storied history of dynamic collaboration with artists in other media, including dancers, painters, scientists, poets, puppeteers, and robotics engineers. A leader in the field, Juventas also facilitates the Boston New Music Festival, a week-long showcase of Boston’s contemporary music scene.

THE JUVENTAS 21-22 IMPACT AT A GLANCE

“Working with Juventas was, in every way, a beautiful experience. From the moment I walked into the performance space, I was greeted with so many kind faces who were ready to introduce me to the team. I was blown away with the sense of genuine passion for the art they were creating which ultimately culminated in a stellar performance. I truly felt lucky to be a part of it all.”

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Dear Juventas Community,

I will always remember that moment at our September 2021 concert “Memory & Hope,” when our musicians walked on stage to welcome an in-person concert hall audience for the first time in 18 months. The joy was palpable, as booming applause filled the air. In that special moment, we honored our deep bond with our audience.

There was another cause for celebration that evening too. Not only had Juventas survived a pandemic that could easily have leveled our small organization, we were thriving. After 18 months of leadership in virtual programming, Juventas’s 2021-22 season was our first-ever hybrid season, welcoming both in-person audiences in Massachusetts, while simultaneously live-streaming to viewers around the world. We have committed to continual adaptation and investment in technology, so that everyone can join us, regardless of geography or circumstance. Juventas’s annual reach is now 3,000 people in-person and over 20,000 online, a stunning impact for an organization of our size.

As we turn toward our current 2022-23 season, we are excited to take a moment to look back and reflect on the achievements of our recently completed 2021-22 season. Everything described in these pages—all of the hearts touched with our ensemble’s great performances—is possible because of your support, and for that, we are eternally grateful.

Sincerely,

6 2021-22 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT

HIGHLIGHTS

Our 2021-22 season was full of proud moments. As an audience we shared in the collective experience of togetherness and reflection, and as a team we found a means of overcoming challenges leftover from lockdown. Here are just a few of our many high points.

BACK IN THE CONCERT HALL

September 11, 2021 marked Juventas’ return to the concert hall for the first time since the pandemic. After 18 months of virtual programming, it felt euphoric to physically reunite with our community in the concert hall. The tireless dedication of our musicians, staff, and production crew culminated in this beautiful moment of joy and relief.

“Memory and Hope” was Juventas’s first-ever hybrid concert. During the height of the pandemic, our virtual programs saw audiences as high as 7,000 people per concert. Seeing this global interest in our music, we committed to welcoming both an in-person audience at the Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and viewers around the world watching a simultaneous high-definition live stream on YouTube.

“Being back together with other music lovers for the first time in over a year, and to be doing something that we all love to do, which is to really take in the performances, connect with the performers and musicians… I can’t put it into words what it means to be back in a situation like this.”

FIRST-EVER HYBRID SEASON

“Juventas is continually on the cutting edge, rising to the occasion every season, as with their live-streamed concerts during Covid, where they set a tremendous standard for concert production, presenting gorgeously choreographed, beautifully filmed, LIVE concerts that wowed myself and others in the audience. When I am asked for ideas by presenters for how to produce concerts, especially during this difficult time, Juventas is who I recommend as inspiration, every time.”

OUR ONLINE VIRTUAL CONCERTS

have

over 30K people in and 49 countries in 45 U.S. states

This new hybrid structure came with many challenges and changes for Juventas. To prioritize the health and safety of our community, we required all audience members to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to attend our concerts in-person. We asked audiences to mask-up, limited our attendance to 50% of the venue’s capacity, and made sure the MERV-14 air filters were up and running at the Multicultural Arts Center.

Looking towards the future, “Memory and Hope” captured our growing sense of optimism and strength of persevering to find light from darkness. But the concert also sought to validate and explore the effects of pandemic isolation, reflecting on the lessons we learned living through this time of uncertainty and upheaval. “Memory and Hope” was dedicated to the people– many of them our own family and friends– that we lost during the pandemic.

THE WORLD PREMIERE OF “MILLENNIAL ELEGY”

The centerpiece of Juventas’ “Memory and Hope” performance was the world premiere of “Millennial Elegy,”a piece Juventas commissioned from composer Stephanie Ann Boyd. This special commission marked a new high point of Juventas’s collaborative relationship with Boyd, which extends back to 2014. As Juventas musicians played Boyd’s melody for the first time, the concert hall was filled with the light of forty battery-powered candles in the hands of our audience members, lit in remembrance.

Boyd’s piece marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States and honors everyone we lost to COVID. “These two tragedies have been the moments for those of my generation and culture where time stopped,” shares Ms. Boyd. “Writing this piece has been a very tender, at times difficult process, and how could it not be? The far off memories of twenty years ago, being ten years old and asking my grandfather what was happening and having him, a man who I felt knew everything, solemnly tell me ‘Stephanie...I don’t know,’ mingled with the much more vivid memories of being in New York City in the spring of 2020, watching Covid cases grow exponentially every day.” Boyd partnered with award-winning poet Jessica Lynn Suchon, a long-time collaborator, who wrote original lyrics to speak to the moment.

“Juventas has set a standard in performing, presenting, and promoting contemporary work that I look up to and am incredibly proud to be a part of. From my first Juventas performance in 2014 that featured one of my earliest works, Fantasia Olora (2008) to the 2019/2020 season where they played Fantasia Olora and Lullaby for Sophie (2017), to the 2020/2021 season, where they programmed Auctumnus (2013) and Astrum Agri (2015), Juventas has been a dazzling light in my career. In sharing these works with a wide and diverse audience, Juventas treats listeners not only to the music itself, but takes them on a deep dive into the backgrounds and stories surrounding these works, creating a delightful and holistic concert experience often aspired to by other organizations but seldom achieved.”

MUSIC FOR ALL LAUNCH

In September 2021, we launched our “Music for All” program, offering $1 tickets to anyone who can’t afford our regular prices, for any reason– no questions asked.

Juventas aims for everyone to be able to join us, regardless of circumstance, because music is and should be for all. Already we are starting to see the impact that “Music for All” can have on lowering the barriers of entry for potential concert-goers. By our March 26th “Lungs for the City” concert, 15% of ticket-buyers came through our “Music for All” program, bringing in Juventas first-timers and widening the reach of our living, breathing, new music.

Looking forward, we are working to expand the awareness of this program, so that even more people can join us in the concert hall.

14 2021-22 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT

“Juventas plays an important role in bringing new music to life, joining the dots between living composers and an audience that might otherwise not have discovered them. As a composer being introduced to Juventas, I suddenly felt part of a new family, a very welcoming one with a positive ethos. This, combined with dedicated musicians who give fine performances, will give many composers a great sense of purpose when their works are premiered by Juventas.”

Juventas is founded on building direct and personal relationships. Music is first and foremost about the people, who each participate in making this art form a transcendent, conscious experience of the present. We often refer to the Juventas community as one big ‘family,’ dedicated to celebrating each other and each of our individual contributions to the new music community.

We are pleased to introduce you to our Juventas family: our board, staff, musicians, composers, and supporters.

OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE

We are building on recent momentum to lift Juventas to the next level.

By 2024, we aim: To hire a full-time general manager who can support increased performance activity.

By 2025, we aim: For musician compensation to be in parity with union rates

By 2026, we aim: To start an endowment that can provide a stable income stream to supplement other sources.

By 2035, we aim: For Juventas to own its own venue that we can deploy for Juventas performances, and rent at affordable rates to other ensembles in the Boston area. Your support makes a difference. Support Juventas today.
