What is Biomorphic Design Simply put, biomorphic design refers to the use of organic forms and patterns found in nature to inspire the creation of art in its various forms. The influence of biomorphic design can be seen in fine art, sculpture, photography and architecture.

The Biomorphic Design Movement Biomorphism emerged in the 20th century as a response to the rigidity of modernism. Its organic nature was a push back against the mechanical forms found in industrialization. Biomorphic design attempts to create a harmonious connection to our lives.

What Characterizes Biomorphic Art Biomorphic art shares several common traits, namely smooth flowing, organic curves a hint of organic shapes from plants and animals as well as geographic patterns and contours in some instances, connections between organic forms and psychological imagery such as dreams, growth and fertility a precarious balance between representative art and abstraction The first two groups of traits are usually the easiest to recognize and generally what differentiates biomorphic art from pure abstraction.

Some of the Big Names in Biomorphic Art There are several well known artists whose work brought biomorphism into the mainstream.

Fine Art Jean Arp (1886-1966), Joan Miró (1893-1983) and Yves Tanguy (190055) were pioneers in this area. Jean Arp’s wife, Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943) was responsible for the softening of geometric forms rather than in overt organic imagery.
