North Walsham

from the editor Hello. This edition of Just North Walsham features news about two important events for the town. Remembrance is a poignant time of year when the town comes to a standstill and falls silent to remember the sacrifices of members of our armed forces. Full details about Remembrance events are featured on North Walsham Town Council’s news page (p11).

Later in November, on the 25th, Christmas will get under way in the town when its festive lights are switched on. A small team of dedicated volunteers work hard throughout the year to ensure North Walsham sparkles at Christmas and their efforts will come to fruition at the switch-on event, which promises lots of festive fun for people of all ages. Find out more on page 4.

Town set to sparkle once more thanks to volunteers A dedicated group of volunteers will see all their hard work come to fruition later this month when North Walsham’s Christmas lights are switched on. The group of 12 have spent the past six Sunday mornings getting the town ready for the main event on Saturday, November 25. Colin Jeary, Chairman of the North Walsham Christmas Lights Committee, said: "The Christmas lights rely purely on volunteers who are willing to give up a few hours, so we can make sure the town has lights each year. “All of the town's lights are funded purely by donations from traders and grants. “Each year the team try to improve or add a little extra but it’s always dependent on what’s achievable in the few weeks of erecting.” This year's switch-on will once again take place in the Market Place, as well as spilling over into Church Street where Santa will be in his grotto. Colin added: “With the regeneration of the town, we have had to cut back on the funfair rides this year, but are actively looking at options for next year already. “There will be a street fair with food, drink and craft stalls from 2pm, with live entertainment including the Salvation Army

FESTIVE FUN: A Scene from last year’s Christmas lights switch-on event. Picture: ANDREA HUDSON PHOTOGRAPHY Band leading up to the switch on at 6pm.” For more information about the switch-on event, see the Facebook page at www. facebook.com/nwxmaslights t People are invited to celebrate New Year's Eve at North Walsham Community Centre. There will be live music, with

Lowrider playing songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s, and the event runs from 7.30pm to 1am. Tickets must be bought in advance. The cost is £22 for adults and £10 for children aged up to 16 and includes food. To book, call 01692 402116.

Shop gives support to local dementia patients A charity shop has thanked all those who have helped them to support dementia patients and carers in local communities. The Cherished Charity shop, in Market Street, North Walsham, has so far helped to fund boat trips for 40 people and carers; Christmas dinner for the same number of people; a sensory board and sofa for a local home; and recliner chairs for individuals. And the independent charity which runs the store says this is down to the people who donate to the shop and buy from them.

Clothes are a bargain at the shop, with most being £1 items. Children’s clothes are 25p each or 5 for £1. They also sell crafts, jewellery, books, toys and bric-a-brac. The shop opens Monday to Saturday, 10am to 3pm, except on Wednesday when it is 10am to 1pm. t The Cameo Club on Happisburgh Road, North Walsham, have a meet up for people with dementia on Tuesday and Thursday each week, with lunch included. More details can be found on Facebook.

Ploughing deep into town’s rich heritage Two new sculptures are digging into the rich history of the North Walsham area. The pair stand sentinel next to steps leading from the parish church to the St Nicholas precinct. Shaped like ploughshares (the main cutting blades of ploughs), they give a steely snapshot into local heritage ranging from farming and fire, to markets and manufacturing. They are particularly geared at giving younger people an insight into the town’s past – with a QR code which, with the click of a smart phone, unlocks more information about bygone days, One sculpture explores North Walsham’s early history with features including sheep shears representing the thriving wool industry, flames to mark the devastating Great Fire of 1600, and a Fleur de Lys symbol of the famous local Paston family. The other focuses on the past 200 years, with a gas burner linked to the Bacton terminal, a spanner marking local engineering firms, an anchor reflecting links with the canal and Lord Nelson, and a heavy horseshoe highlighting the foundation of the national agricultural workers’ union in the town in 1906. Both were made by local sculptor Berni Marfleet using found and donated items which are welded to the 1m high ploughs. He said: “The aim is to provide an entertaining way of learning about the history of the town we live in for residents and visitors. It is particularly focused at younger people, hopefully giving them a sense of belonging to a rich and proud local tradition and heritage and also an

was also boosted by a grant from the Community Shop and there was support from the church and other organisations such as the Heritage Centre. The sculptures were officially launched by the local Priest-in-Charge David Warner. Town mayor Bob Wright said the sculptures were a great example of cooperation between community groups, adding: “We hope the sculptures will encourage residents and visitors, especially younger generations, to explore our past.”

Fair promises plenty of festive fun for visitors A Christmas fayre on Saturday, December 2 will raise money for the North Walsham Play charity. FROM THE ARCHIVES

Enjoy historic scenes every month with archive calendar History lovers can have a snapshot of North Walsham’s past on their wall all year round, with the release of the latest photo archive calendar. Scenes showcased in the 2024 North Walsham and District Community Archive calendar include the Market Place, a wartime victory parade, steam railway flashback and the post mill at nearby Swafield. It is the ninth edition of the calendar whose proceeds help fund the work of the volunteerrun archive. Archive chairman Wayne Beauchamp said: “The calendar has become a firm favourite with those who grew up in the town and remember ‘the good old days’, as well as newcomers to the town interested in its history and to those lucky enough to grow up here but who now live further away. Copies are sent all over the world via our website. “Money made from past calendars has enabled us to continue to source and safeguard further interesting photos of the town's history, some of which appear in the new calendar. We collaborate with other local groups and organisations to include important local dates on the calendar too.” The archive has been running for more than 16 years. Its mission is to collect photographs of local interest, safeguard their future and make them available to the public. Wayne added: “The money raised from selling our calendars not only helps us achieve this, but the calendars themselves are

8

one of the many ways we can share the collection with the public. Sharing our collection safeguards those images for future generations.” Archive photos are also featured in a public exhibition, in the official town guidebook, in local media, and on the group’s website and Facebook page. t The calendars cost £5, with the price pegged thanks to advertising support from local businesses. They are available at: Colin's Sweetshop and Sam's Pets in the Market Place, Swallows Coffee Shop and The Heritage Centre in Vicarage Street, The Community Shop in Church Street and Penney's Flowers and Crafts at Wroxham Barns, and via the website www.northwalshamarchive. co.uk

HERITAGE THROUGH THE YEARS: The Archive’s 2024 calendar has been produced and includes an array of historic pictures from the area.

Festive fun for debut director A festive farce at a seaside theatre is unwrapping a special Christmas treat for its young director - 22 years since she flitted onto its stage as a butterfly. Katie Thompson, from Knapton, near North Walsham, was just four when she first spread her wings as a performer in a youth production of Wally The Worm at Sheringham Little Theatre. Now, aged 26, she has just graduated with a Masters degree in theatre direction at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. And her first professional directing job is back in her native north Norfolk in charge of a classic Christmas comedy, Alan Ayckbourn’s Season’s Greetings. The show by the Little Theatre Players amateur dramatics group is a fundraiser for the venue, which is close to Katie’s heart, having “grown up” there due to strong family connections. Mum Debbie is its theatre director, and dad Simon, a theatre studies tutor at Paston College, has directed many shows there from panto and musicals to serious drama and summer farces. Brother Sam, 24, who has also regularly appeared at the theatre, is currently doing a BA degree in acting at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Katie said: “I love theatre and being creative, and have been in lots of shows

STAGE DEBUT: Katie Thompson (third, right) is pictured with some of the cast. She’s also pictured directing. here, including as Christine in the Phantom of the Opera when I was 17. But I was not always the most confident person on stage. “When I went to ‘uni’ I did a directing module and realised that was for me. I have seen dad do it, and watched some other great directors at work when I stage managed the summer shows here.” Her first “pro” job is particularly tough as the play has a large nine-strong cast and a

clever plot which finds the humour among a dysfunctional family gathering at Christmas. Once Season’s Greetings is over Katie heads to Diss Corn Hall to direct its panto Cinderella, running from December 16-31. Season's Greetings runs from November 16-18, 7.30pm nightly and a 2.30pm Saturday matinee. Tickets £15 from www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com or the box office 01263 822347.

VIKINGS SWIMMING CLUB

Swimmers make strong start to new season North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club made a strong start to their season at the Iceni Gala in Dereham. The team, including swimmers from the North Walsham area, won 18 golds, 26 silvers and 18 bronze medals in various age categories. Among the gold medallists was 17-year-old Ruby Tracey, who won a hat trick of breaststroke medals. She won gold in the 200m, silver in the 100m and bronze over 50 metres. Vikings made it a clean sweep of medals in the 200m breaststroke with George Edridge, 13, touching first for gold, Razvan Platon landing a silver medal and George’s twin Zak taking the bronze. The twins’ younger sister Mily, who is only in her first year of competition, did not win a medal but her time of 44.13 was good enough for the 10-year-old to compete in the 50m Freestyle in next year’s County Championships. There was further breaststroke success when Lily Dear took a bronze in the 200m breaststroke and then

added a silver in the 50m race. In her age group, Grace Parker was also successful on backstroke when she won bronze over 100m and Esme Seaman won silver in the 50m backstroke and bronze in the 50m butterfly. Anna Thurston went 3.38.82 for the 200m backstroke and subsequently reduced her personal best time by 20 seconds, collecting the bronze medal. After the gala, Lead Coach Sam Watts said: “I knew we had the potential to do well but to be honest I never imagined we would do so well with 63 medals. It shows that the team are all eager to improve.” Vikings train at the Victory Pool in North Walsham and at Sheringham Reef. NORTH WALSHAM TOWN TWINNING

Twinning group preparing to welcome good friends After a torrid few years, thanks to Covid, I am pleased to report that the Town Twinning seems to have survived pretty well unscathed, writes Chairman Steve Wolstenholme. Our first dipping of the toes in the water was in 2022 when 12 members visited Friesenried, in Germany. All went well; travel, customs, etc were all trouble free and our six-day visit was excellent. We even conquered yet another one of the Alps. There cannot be many left that we have not planted the North Walsham flag upon. The year 2023 began very well with fundraising events being well attended and preparations for the visit in June from 38 Germans being finalised. Thirty-eight visitors were accommodated in private houses. If you would like to host in the future or better still come on an exciting visit to Bavaria, arguably Germany’s most beautiful state, you will be most welcome. If you enjoy the TV show “Race around the World” then you could liken our trips to the programme but without the racing and finding employment! At our AGM at the end of September, the

We must be doing something right or nobody wants the positions hopefully the former. We are taking names for the visit to Friesenried next August and hope to take a good number with us. If you fancy something different and really good fun give me a call. Sadly, in September, we lost one of our only two remaining founder members. As ever, please consider becoming a member, without you the Town Twinning will fizzle out and after 42 years that would be a very sad thing. Call me, Steve, on 01953 607119.

Salvation Army’s helping hand to homeless centre For their Harvest Festival this year, the North Walsham Salvation Army went in a new direction. Instead of a display of harvest produce, folks were asked to bring boxer shorts, squash and coffee to support the Army’s ARC homeless support centre in Pottergate, Norwich. Community worker Rachael Payne said: “Harvest is all about thanking God for His goodness to us. It was, though, good to respond in a different and practical way to help others who are not so fortunate.” t The Salvation Army, in Hall Lane, North Walsham, is holding a Christmas Fayre on

NORTH WALSHAM RUGBY CLUB

with PAUL MORSE

Inexperience takes its toll on Vikings The Vikings have continued to find life difficult in National 2 East. After seven matches, they were still without a win or any bonus points and were 12 points adrift at the bottom of the league. Their two games in the past month were both against sides who were also struggling, so there were hopes of improved results, but they didn’t transpire. At Sevenoaks, five Ross Magnus penalties gave them a 7-15 lead early in the second half but they still went down 43-15. At home to Westcombe Park, they suffered their heaviest defeat so far, losing 7-59. Director of Rugby Niall Lear said: “We have a great group of young players getting National League experience, but they are inexperienced at this level. “Players and coaches are all trying their hardest but there is no magical fix.” After two successive promotions the Raiders are also finding it hard, losing their first five matches in Eastern Counties One. Fixtures have started for the Youth and Valkyries teams, with the club recently hosting the Norfolk 10s competition for under 14/15/16 boys’ sides in the county. Each Valkyries team (under 12/14.16/18) is paired with another club for fixtures so

TOUGH ENCOUNTER: The Vikings in action against Westcombe Park. Picture: RICHARD POLLEY full-strength sides can be put out. The Under 16s, for example, are paired with West Norfolk, and their joint team recently beat Lowestoft & Yarmouth, but were narrowly defeated at Cambridge. There are two matches at Scottow Park this Saturday (11th): the Vikings play Canterbury at 3pm and the Raiders meet Ely at 2.30pm. Both are away the following week - the Vikings at Esher and Raiders at Ipswich YM. On November 25, only the Vikings have a fixture with Guernsey visiting Scottow (2pm

The club’s U-14 Valkyries team can look forward to new winter kits after receiving £1,268 from North Walsham Community Shop. The shop makes monthly grants to community projects across the area by selling donated items at its shops at 16b Church Street and 1 Market Place. Some of the players are pictured receiving the cheque from Bob Wright and Veronica Cooke of the Community Shop. kick-off). On December 2, the Vikings travel to Wimbledon and the Raiders play Southwold at home (2pm).

If you need help to resolve a dispute, please contact Susanna Mayfield on 01263 825959 or email susanna.mayfield@hayes-storr.com

by Susanna Mayfield Associate Solicitor Hayes + Storr

Inheritance disputes between siblings Losing a parent is never easy, and things can become even more distressing if quarrels arise between siblings about who should get what from their parents’ estates. Dying intestate It is very important to leave a will and keep it under regular review. If someone dies without a will, their estate will be distributed according to the intestacy rules. The determination of how the estate will be distributed shall be determined upon which relatives are living at the time of death, which can be complicated. Whilst we cannot detail the application of the intestacy rules in full here, the current rules dictate that a surviving spouse shall receive all personal property, the first £322,000 of assets and half of the remainder of the estate. Anything remaining after the spouse has taken their entitlement will be shared equally between their children. Even

estranged children will receive an equal benefit. Different amounts left to siblings A parent may choose to leave one sibling more than another or disinherit a child. The English legal system is hailed for allowing individuals to leave their estate to whoever they please. However, if someone is financially dependent on the deceased and is not left sufficient benefit in their will, the court can order that reasonable financial provision is made for the claimant from the estate. Additionally, if a sibling has been promised an interest or a larger share of the estate but this promise is not reflected in a will, they may have an action in proprietary estoppel. Will validity If someone is unhappy with the share they have been left in a will and they are suspicious about its contents, they may consider challenging the will on a number

of grounds including: improper execution, lack of testamentary capacity, want of knowledge, duress/coercion or undue influence. A sibling may, for example, claim that their brother or sister put undue pressure on their parent to draft the will in their favour. Dispute resolution Where a sibling wants to contest a will, going to court should be considered the last resort. Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods are available which are usually less costly, confrontational, and time-consuming than court proceedings. How a solicitor can help Our Dispute Resolution Team advises on all inheritance-related disputes, including between siblings. They can outline the grounds for potential claims, suggest an appropriate form of ADR and, if the case must go to court, they can collate evidence and provide advice and guidance throughout the court process.

A fine finale

Stage show takes a trip back to the 80s

A choral society will close their 90th anniversary celebrations with a concert of music by Mozart and Schubert. The concert by Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society is at St Peter’s Parish Church, Sheringham, on Saturday, November 18, at 7pm. Tickets are £18 (under18s free) and can be bought by calling 01263 822347 or visiting www. sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

The Walsham Drama & Singing Group is about to stage its next production – with a very local storyline. Since Yesterday: Walsham and the World, is an original written production by WDSG. It's nearly 1986 in North Walsham's Fine Fare supermarket. Join Peggy, Paul, Alan, the riddle-filled Ritchie and other Fine Fare employees at another day at work.

Customers come and go, watching live in-store entertainment and reminiscing with thoughts of yesterday. The production will take place at North Walsham Community Centre on November 10 and 11 (7:30pm). Tickets can be purchased via the Ticketsource link at https://walshamdsg. org or at North Walsham Community Shop, Church Street.
