It’s the on-point beauty treatment for brides across the world but how do you get the perfect set of lashes?

We asked Katoomba lash technician Michelle Gatenby for her top tips.

WHAT ARE THE CURRENT TRENDS FOR BRIDAL LASHES?

This year, more than ever, bridal lash trends are for thick and luscious lashes that still appear natural. Brides want to avoid the false lash look of pre-made clusters and strip lashes, opting instead for the handmade art of individual lashes only a lash technician can make.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE OF YOUR WEDDING SHOULD YOU HAVE LASH WORK DONE?

Ideally you want to come in a few weeks before your wedding to make sure you like the look and are happy with the feel of your lashes. Once you’ve decided on the length and style, book an appointment for the week of your wedding for your infills so your lashes are looking their best for your big day.

WHAT ARE THE DOS AND DON’TS OF LASH CARE?

Dos: Shampoo your lashes. Purchase a lash shampoo from your lash technician, who will advise you on how to wash your lashes. Wash them each day as it’s important to remove all eye makeup and natural oil build-up – your eyelids are one of the oiliest parts of your face. Enjoy your lashes and don’t feel afraid to do what you normally do – they are up for the challenge of your everyday life and special-occasion activities.

Don’ts: Never put mascara on your lashes. Your lash technician has handmade individual fans for you and applying mascara will clump them together. And don’t use oil-based cleansers or makeup on your eyes – the oils will break down your adhesives and they will fall out much quicker than they should.

INSPIRED BY THE HYDRO MAJESTIC HOTEL’S HISTORY AND GRANDEUR, MEGAN AND MATT OPTED FOR TIMELESS ELEGANCE ON THEIR BIG DAY.

When Matt Drummond first considered proposing to Megan Lange, he imagined it happening somewhere romantic, such as Cahill’s Lookout in Katoomba – one of the couple’s favourite spots. Things didn’t go quite to plan, however.

The lookout was burnt out by bushfires so was no longer an option. Plan B was to surprise Megan one Friday night after work back in November 2015.

“Not realising what Matt had in mind, I suggested we meet at a bar in Sydney called Buckley’s,” Megan recalls. “We arrived and Matt looked decidedly uncomfortable, so we didn’t stay. I later found out he was horrified at the connotation of the bar’s name – ‘Buckley’s chance’ –and the idea of having to forever tell the story of getting engaged there.”

After relocating to the Oyster Bar in Circular Quay, Matt proposed to his long-time love and the couple set their wedding date for 18 November 2017.

As Leura residents with both of their families and many friends living in the Blue Mountains, Megan and Matt decided to keep their wedding close to home by booking The Hydro Majestic Hotel, in Medlow Bath, for both their ceremony and reception.

“I grew up in the mountains, so the Hydro Majestic has always been a fixture for me,” explains Matt. “When Megan moved to the mountains from Sydney, we would drive past the hotel while it was under renovation and would always say that if we were ever to get married, we would do it there.”

Megan says she has always loved the historical significance of the location: “There are so many options for spectacular scenery and spaces for photography and intimate moments, even within such a vast property.” Additionally, the couple had been to several events at the hotel in recent years, so were aware of the seamless service provided. “We know the owners and could guarantee that the attention to detail would not be surpassed,” Megan adds.

Once the venue was confirmed, Megan and Matt booked wedding planner and stylist Anna Wang. “One of the main reasons we hired Anna was so we didn’t have to call on family and friends to assist – we wanted everyone to just enjoy the lead-up and the event itself,” says Megan.

With Matt being a film director and Megan a film producer, they had a strong combined vision for their wedding and

briefed Anna accordingly. “Our aim was for everything to be in keeping with the Hydro Majestic’s style, so we wanted a timeless and sophisticated feel,” says Megan. “The brief began with designing our monogram and invites, which reflected the art deco architecture of the location.”

This detail was then carried through into the styling, with the monogram being used again on the napkins, event stationery, wedding cake, cocktail-hour décor and bespoke dance floor.

Florals were to be a key feature, with Anna designing two spectacular arrangements at the entry to the ceremony aisle, both filled with white and soft, cream-toned flowers. Candlelit lanterns with phalaenopsis orchids lined the aisle, culminating in a spectacular circular arrangement filled with peonies, white roses, lilies and orchids at the altar.

An equal amount of detail went into Megan’s glorious gown, with the bride-to-be going directly to couturier George Elsissa rather than shopping around. “I took George vintage images of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Christian Dior gowns from the 1920s to the 1950s,” she explains. “He went to work and literally sketched my dream dress immediately.”

Taking more than nine months to complete, the gown is covered in 3D lace, with a detachable skirt/train, which Megan was able to remove part way through the wedding reception. “It is timeless and will be the most beautiful gown I will ever have,” she adds.

As their wedding day approached, the weather took a turn for the worse. “It hadn’t rained for months but rain was forecast for the entire week before the day, then of course it poured all day long.”

Fortunately, Megan and Matt had already made the call to move their ceremony from a designated outdoor space to the hotel’s Grand Ballroom, where the reception was also held. The magnificent room was custom-lit with warm-wash lighting and large centrepieces filled with greenery, lilies, orchids and peonies were placed on each table. The bridal table was lined with a floral hedge comprising white seasonal blooms at the base, with phalaenopsis orchids and roses cascading down the front of the table. Flowers and candles were also placed on the fireplace mantles.

“All along we had said the most important part of the wedding was the ceremony,” says Megan, who chose one bridesmaid, while Matt had two groomsmen. “I hadn’t seen the ballroom until I walked down the aisle and was absolutely blown away at the sheer luxury of the space, and the atmosphere of warmth and intimacy in such a large room.”

When it came to their vows, the couple chose celebrant Paul Wheeler and included a modern version of the Jewish ‘Seven Blessings’, in honour of Megan’s family. “The most well-known sentence from Shir Hashirim – ‘I am my beloved

and my beloved is mine’ – was tied into our vows and held a main theme throughout the ceremony and reception,” explains Megan.

After the ceremony, all 126 guests headed to the hotel’s Delmonte Bar for cocktail hour to sip on cocktails chosen by the newlyweds – Apple Martinis for Megan and Espresso Martinis for Matt. “Over 450 cocktails were served on the evening, which is a testament to the service the Hydro Majestic was able to deliver,” says Matt.

One of the evening’s most standout inclusions was a 40-minute performance by ARIA-winning vocalist Katie Noonan, who sang and played on the hotel’s grand piano during the four-course dinner service.

“Katie’s music has been a constant throughout our relationship, so we were very privileged that she was gracious enough to perform for us,” says Megan. “She was simply breathtaking – you could have heard a pin drop and the whole room was in tears. Of course, there were standing ovations at the end!”

Now that Cahill’s Lookout has been restored, the Drummonds often head there with a bottle of champagne: “It’s where we will always go to toast our anniversary and think back to our beautiful wedding day.” BML

HOMEMADE TOUCHES, REAL-LIFE AND IMAGINED FOREST CREATURES AND ONE HAPPY COUPLE’S ARTISTIC FLOURISHES ENSURED THIS BACKYARD WEDDING BRIMMED WITH LOVE AND LIGHT.

With their love of homespun and filmic-inspired whimsy, Kathryn and Nicholas’s wedding was never going to be boring. “We are quite quirky people. Nicholas loves playing guitar, collecting tweed caps, philosophy and tickling our pug’s belly. I love drawing, Wes Anderson, bright yellow colours, Nicholas and tickling our pug’s belly,” says Kathryn. “We just didn’t want to stick with a traditional wedding.”

Kathryn put her degree in Visual Arts and studies in design and ‘Pottering About™’ to good use when styling her unique backyard wedding. “We wanted an intimate wedding at home with our nearest and dearest. Our Katoomba house was built in 1897, so it’s character-packed and suited our small wedding perfectly,” she explains.

“I couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else but at home in our garden with our dogs, surrounded by family,” says Nicholas. “Especially after Kathryn spent nearly two years getting the garden ready for spring by planting hundreds of bulbs!” he adds.

Not having to pay for a venue meant Kathryn and Nicholas could afford some truly memorable touches. “We had a barn owl called Giselle as our ring bearer,” says Kathryn. “She was the sweetest, most curious creature.

“I have loved owls ever since first watching Labyrinth, so this was a dream come true,” she remembers.

Giselle comes from Sydney animal handlers Feathered Friends, who provide all sorts of birds for live shows, movies and weddings. The funds they raise go toward Feathered Friends Animal Productions, which cares for injured birds, many of whom are victims of feral animals or trauma.

Giselle wasn’t the only forest creature attending Kathryn and Nicholas’s wedding. The pair sourced Etsy-made decorations, including two needle-felt smiling foxes, two needle-felt deer and a hand-embroidered wedding sign that matched their wedding flowers.

“All of our wedding decorations were sourced second-hand or from Etsy,” says Kathryn. “I have an Etsy store myself and really wanted to support boutique makers and not buy mass-produced goods.”

Kathryn also found some vintage steel chairs for the ceremony. “They were plain grey, so I painted them in

‘Wes Anderson’ colours,” she explains. “They wound up looking very fun and it was 100 per cent worth getting paint stuck in my hair for days.”

Kathryn’s dress, however, proved problematic. “I couldn’t find a dress I liked!” she says. “Every wedding dress I saw just didn’t feel like ‘me’ at all, so I had my dress custommade by a shop on Etsy called Dreamers and Lovers, added a Peter Pan collar for a vintage touch and instantly fell in love with it!

“The minute I chose bright yellow shoes to go with my wedding dress, I knew it wasn’t going to be your average wedding.”

In a nod to heritage, Kathryn created a real family tree by hanging framed pictures of weddings from both families dating back over 100 years on a large tree in the backyard. “We included images of family who are no longer with us, so in some small way they could be there too,” she adds.

Other heartfelt touches included Kathryn’s Mum helping her make over 40 jars of lemon butter (using her Nan’s original recipe) to give as wedding favours to guests. And celebrant Tina Sheil, from Love in the Mountains, included a marriage equality statement in the ceremony – a gesture important to both Kathryn and Nicholas.

Kathryn sums up the mood: “It ended up being a bright, quirky, Etsy, woodland, vintage, Beatrix-Potter-meets-WesAnderson kind of spring wedding.

“People have asked me, ‘Why so many bright colours, little smiling animals and yellow flowers?’ My family hasn’t always had it easy and, for me, it’s just that little bit harder to be sad when surrounded by yellow flowers and deer,” she says.

“I know it’s a cliché, but it truly was the happiest, brightest, sunniest day of my life,” Kathryn admits. “To marry my best friend in our garden surrounded by everyone we love, including my 90-year-old Nan and my incredible mum, who overcame breast cancer and helped us so much with preparations, was a day I will hold close to my heart for the rest of my life.”

Not many couples can say they fell in love while discussing the wonders of fish, but that is exactly what happened to Natalia and Nathan de Vos.

“We met at Sydney Aquarium on 12 October 2014,” Nathan recalls. “I think I initially impressed Natalia with my fish knowledge and David Attenborough impersonations, but once we got talking we couldn’t stop!”

Natalia laughs at the memory: “We both felt this instant chemistry and familiarity with each other, and began talking about our interests, families and life values. We were keen to keep the conversation going, so we headed over the to the Guylian Belgian Chocolate Café for some coffee, waffles and tiramisu.”

Knowing instantly that he had met his match, Nathan wanted to prolong his time with Natalia. “Not content on letting this wonderful, interesting woman go, I asked Natalia if she wanted to see a movie with me,” he says. “It was the first of many movies to come.”

Eighteen months later, on 2 April 2016, Nathan proposed, going to great lengths to ensure Natalia took him seriously.

“I asked Natalia to join me for a picnic in the Royal National Park,” he explains. “In the months leading up to the proposal, I had convinced Natalia that I had a newfound love of crosswords and created one that I placed inside a magazine for us to do at the picnic.”

The crossword clues all pertained to the couple’s favourite things and the places they had been during their courtship. Needless to say, Natalia started suspecting something was going on midway through the puzzle.

“My instructions required placing a template over the crossword at its conclusion to solve a hidden phrase within the answers,” says Nathan. “As Natalia read the words ‘Will you marry me?’ through the template, I dropped to one knee to pop the question and presented her engagement ring – a custom-made, white-gold vintage solitaire with our initials debossed through the band I had designed.”

After Natalia responded with an emphatic ‘Yes’, an accordion player Nathan had pre-arranged appeared from the bushes and serenaded the couple with Natalia’s favourite song, La Vie en Rose, as they shared their first dance as fiancés.

Planning their Blue Mountains wedding soon began in earnest, with the date set for 3 December 2016. “We wanted somewhere beautiful and scenic, and living in Springwood at the time made it an easy choice,” says Natalia. After looking at churches and reception venues throughout the surrounding region, the couple say they couldn’t go past the reverence of Hoskins Memorial Uniting Church and the rustic charm of Secret Creek Café & Restaurant, both in Lithgow.

“We wanted a unique reception venue and Secret Creek suited us perfectly,” says Natalia. “We loved the location – the property is set back in the bush on a native wildlife sanctuary, and it’s so quiet and beautiful. We were also intrigued by the all-vegan menu and were amazed when we visited for a tasting.”

Lithgow was also the area Nathan’s late grandfather spent his childhood exploring. “We thought having our reception at Secret Creek would be a beautiful way of connecting him to our special day,” he says.

In advance of their big day, the couple travelled with Nathan’s parents to the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, where Natalia’s Indonesian/Chinese family reside.

“We went to perform ‘Sangjit’, a traditional Chinese betrothal rite whereby the groom and his family present eight gifts to the bride’s family,” Nathan explains. “We also had a Chinese wedding tea ceremony, followed by a reception for all of Natalia’s family members that were unable to be at our Lithgow wedding.”

Back in Australia and two years on from their chance encounter at the aquarium, Natalia and Nathan were united in marriage by Reverend Matt Trounce. “He’s a forward-thinking man who guided us through our marriage preparation, gave us some valuable insights into the meaning of love and helped calm us on our big day,” says Nathan.

The couple opted for traditional wedding vows and readings from the Corinthians and poems recited by family members. Their wedding party was made up of Natalia’s sister Yenmi and her friend, Renny, along with Nathan’s two brothers, Mark and Nick. Natalia’s niece served as flower girl, while Nathan’s two youngest nephews did a great job as page boy and ring bearer.

“The moment I first saw Natalia in her wedding dress walking down the aisle toward me was so wonderful,” Nathan adds. “I was just overwhelmed by how beautiful

she looked and excited by the prospect of spending the rest of my life with her.”

One of Natalia’s treasured memories is hitting the dancefloor with her new husband and guests as Jasmine Strings enraptured the crowd. “The atmosphere was magical – the interior at Secret Creek is all natural timber with high-raked thatched ceilings, and we decorated it with hundreds of fairy lights,” she says. “We also filled the place with lanterns, mason-jar centrepieces and festoon pendant lighting to complement our rustic vintage theme.”

After dining on a vegan feast and dancing the night away, Natalia and Nathan headed for the Hydro Majestic Hotel, in Medlow Bath, to spend their first evening together as husband and wife. “Getting married in the Blue Mountains was a great decision – it’s such an idyllic location with so many spectacular scenic areas,” Nathan concludes. “And I highly recommend that single guys spend some time at Sydney Aquarium – most people might head there to find Nemo, but in the bustling sea of people I found love!” BML

WALLERAWANG WEDDING HAD IT ALL!

Jeff Thurlow and Sebastian Caruso have lived and worked in many of Australia’s capital cities and regional centres but for the past nine years have happily called Hartley home. After meeting on a blind date back in 2006, they became inseparable and some 12 years later were finally able to combine their love of classic elegance and Hollywood glamour to create their perfect wedding.

Celebrating community was always going to play a part in the couple’s wedding. “Jeff and I have lived in the local area for just over nine years, in which time we have become an integral part of the community and have made many friends,” Sebastian explains.

“Our wedding was not only a celebration of our love and commitment to each other but also a celebration of our life here in the Hartley/Lithgow area and all the friends we have made, who were all present at our wedding.”

They always wanted to marry locally and luckily the pair found just the venue. “We stumbled across the Black Gold Motel in Wallerawang last year when we went to the motel’s Crib Room Restaurant for Jeff’s birthday,” says Sebastian. “We were so impressed with the location, food and service that as soon as the legislation supporting marriage equality was passed, we immediately booked it for our wedding.”

The Black Gold Motel, located in the old Wallerawang Primary School, is steeped in history and has undergone extensive restoration work by its current owners, Robert and Linda Cluff. “It was important to us to be married in our local area as we have had such happy years living here and thought it was a great opportunity to showcase the area to our family and friends,” says Jeff.

The couple engaged local stylist Rhonda Collins of Rhonda Collins Events to transform one of the dining rooms at the Black Gold Motel into a classic-style chapel, complete with beautiful flower arrangements, white chairs and a white aisle runner for the pair to walk down.

“Rhonda captured our personalities so well – classic for Sebastian and Hollywood for me,” says Jeff. “She even designed and made an arbour especially for our wedding.”

The ceremony was conducted by Orange-based civil celebrant Simon Price, who both Jeff and Sebastian have known for some time. “We were honoured to have such a great friend marry us,” says Sebastian. “Simon was great to work with and we were able to include many personal, local, cultural and spiritual elements in the ceremony, such as an acknowledgement of country, traditional prayers and poems, recognition of our spirituality (our wedding day fell on Palm Sunday) and aspects of my Italian culture, including a candle ceremony whereby a member of each family lights a candle and together light the candle of marriage and unity.”

In addition, lighted candles paid tribute to Sebastian’s Dad and Jeff’s Mum, who have both passed away.

The bridal party included the couple’s nieces, Holly Wollstein and Lucy Lever, as flower girls and nephew Harry Lever as page boy. “Holly and Lucy wore ’50s-style dresses made to order in Portland from local dressmaker Evelyn Staff. They were a beautiful navy dupion silk, finished off with a cream sash,” recalls Sebastian.

Harry was dressed to impress in “hipster gear” from Next and H&M, and showed off his self-taught musical talent at the reception with a piano rendition of one of the couple’s favourite Carpenters songs, Close to You.

While Jeff chose a traditional white-gold wedding ring from Prouds The Jewellers in Lithgow, Sebastian’s wedding ring, made by Craig Hill Jeweller of Lawson, reflected family ties. “Craig made my wedding ring to complement a ring my Mum gave my late Dad when they were courting in Italy,” he explains. “Mum and Dad would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year, so it was special to have Dad’s ring as part of my wedding-ring set.”

The attention to detail even extended to the ring cushion, which was commissioned locally. “It was made by local designers Tom and Sandy Fullerton of Fullerton Design, who are wonderful friends of ours,” says Jeff.

A total of 130 guests from far and wide joined the couple to celebrate their special day. The reception was also held at the Crib Room Restaurant at the Black Gold Motel. “Rhonda Collins styled both the ceremony and the reception with the same black-and-white theme.

“Jeff is a huge fan of the classic Hollywood actresses such as Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Greta Garbo, so it was only fitting that each table was named after an actress,” Sebastian explains. “Guests at each table were asked to research their allocated actress so they could participate in a little trivia game, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.”

Guests at the ‘Judy Garland’ table exceeded all expectations when they performed a surprise flash-mob rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, actions and all!

Sebastian’s sister Giovanna Lever and brother-in-law Ben Lever kept guests entertained as MCs, reading telegrams and ensuring the speeches were short, sharp and spread across the reception.

“Jeff and I were so happy to finally share our love and commitment through marriage in front of our friends and family. It was great to see people from all different aspects of our life – lifelong friends, local friends and work – come together on our special day. We chose to have a morning wedding followed by a long lunch, as it reflects the people we are. We both love a good long lunch with friends and family. It was a cool, crisp day that was relaxing and lots of fun.”

In lieu of gifts, the couple requested guests donate to Parkinson’s Australia or Dementia Australia through specific fundraising pages they had set up. “We were blown away by the generosity; over $4000 was raised to support further research to find cures,” says Jeff.

And what of the wait for marriage equality? Sebastian says it’s only ever been about love: “This was emphasised by our choice for the processional song – Lauren Hagney of Momentum sang What the World Needs Now… is love, sweet love as we walked down the aisle. Marriage equality is about love.” BML

YOUNG LOVERS ROSIE RANDALL AND LACHLAN MOFFET GRAY COULDN’T WAIT TO CELEBRATE THEIR UNION WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY IN A LEURA CHURCH WEDDING.

It’s not often you find such strength of commitment in a couple as young as Rosie and Lachlan, but these star-crossed lovers decided to buck current trends by marrying young and in a church.

“We met in a bible study group at our church in Sydney,” says Rosie, “I’m 22 and Lachie’s 21. Getting married always felt like the next natural step for us. We actually wanted to get married sooner but we didn’t want to freak our parents out too much!”

Rosie is a born-and-bred mountains girl who loves the wild open spaces of her childhood, while Lachlan grew up in Mosman on Sydney’s lower north shore, where the pair now call home. And while city life suits them now – “it’s close to work and uni” – they both hope to return to the mountains to live one day. “Lachie moved to Katoomba for a year after we started dating and I proposed to him at Landslide Lookout in Katoomba, so the mountains are very special for both of us.”

The ceremony, held at St Alban’s Anglican Church in Leura, where Rosie’s cousin is the minister, was a real family affair. “We wanted the ceremony to be very personal and reflect our beliefs,” she says. “And we also wanted it to feel very sweet, happy and inclusive.” The couple’s minister from Church Hill in Sydney conducted the ceremony, with Rosie’s grandad performing the sermon.

Rosie’s sister Guinevere sang during the signing of the register and her cousin Simeon sang the processional and recessional songs, though neither were overly pious. “We chose songs that were a bit cheesy but fun – Elvis Presley’s Pocketful of Rainbows for the processional and Dean Martin’s Everybody Loves Somebody for the recessional,” Rosie recalls.

The reception was held in the quaint church hall and courtyard, with the family pitching in to create the DIY vintage styling that evoked a warm and festive afternoon of fun for guests and the happy couple.

“We didn’t have set seating arrangements because we wanted everyone to be able to move about and mingle. And it worked really well with the caravan bar and buffet-style paella lunch.”

The bridal party was made up of Rosie’s sister Guinevere as bridesmaid, wearing Alannah Hill, and Lachie’s best friend Matt as best man. Rosie’s cousins and Lachlan’s niece and nephew were excited flower girls and page boy.

The 140 guests enjoyed the casual reception, sitting on picnic rugs on the grass in the church grounds and dancing under the bunting to music by Jazz Fever. “It was as intimate as we could make it, with extended family and close friends attending,” says Rosie. “The atmosphere was incredibly joyful – there was a real sense that people were relaxed and having a good time. It really was a celebration, and we felt incredibly supported and loved.” BML

Orchids, calla lilies, anthurium and paper daisies are a great alternative to the norm, plus they last. We also recycled some dried palm by spraying it to bring in those textural elements that we love, then threw in some native billy buttons, and voila… Pure happy colour with a twist.’

“When you hire Maple Creek Music, you’re in for a good time,” promises Cassie Colless, who has been performing with partner Blake Dantier for four years. “We like to bring lots of fun and a relaxed atmosphere to your wedding day so that you just get to chill out.”

Having predominantly worked as a wedding duo for the past two years (until recently under the name Black Velvet Music), Cassie and Blake enjoy mixing music genres and old and new songs, so they can offer something for everyone.

“Our main genres are pop, rock and funk,” says Blake. “We’ve also got everything covered – I’m a singer, guitarist and audio engineer, and Cassie is a singer, MC and deejay. And we also work as a band with three other musicians.”

According to Cassie, being full-time musicians allows her and Blake to prioritise working on their craft and putting time into preparing for each wedding they are a part of. “We really care about every individual wedding,” she explains. “Each one is unique, and we like to ensure our couples feel extra special and taken care of, even before the day.”

Because they see music as being such an important part of your wedding day, the duo recommends doing your research before hiring a performer. “Try to see the singer or band live, if you can, or watch their videos and have a look at their song list to check they’re the right fit,” says Cassie. “Also book in a chat with them to go through all of your questions – it’s nice to at least e-meet beforehand.”

Cassie and Blake say they are constantly inspired by their work: “Performing is our passion and weddings are such happy events to be included in. A day all about love –who wouldn’t love being a part of that!”

The pair are also delighted that they get to perform in the Blue Mountains, where they both grew up: “There’s something so special about helping to create memories here – it’s so naturally beautiful and the air is so fresh. It feels kind of magical.”

“Acoustic indie urban roots” is how Van Sereno sums up his music style. His eighth album, Don’t Worry, is a fusion of modern blues, jazz, urban roots and smooth grooves that sees the experienced singer/songwriter diversifying and revealing the full extent of his skills.

“This batch of songs are introspective and focus on personal development, growth and relationships,” explains Van, citing Babyface, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Bobby McFerrin, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Prince as strong influences.

Along with recording and regularly playing gigs in the Blue Mountains and Sydney, Van is often sought out by couples looking to add some live-music magic to their wedding day. “I love weddings because you can really feel the love in the air – it’s always such a joy to be a part of a couple’s special day and I get a thrill out of adding something extra to their momentous occasion,” he says.

Performing since age five, Andie Isalie instantly knew she had found her calling and had committed to learning piano, guitar and jazz vocal technique by the time she was six. In the 15 years since, the sultry 21-year-old has released two EPs of original music, played at multiple festivals around Australia and has become a seasoned wedding singer.

“My style is soul/jazz/folk and can be tailored to suit my clients,” says Andie. “Depending on what the couple is after, I can perform solo with vocals and guitar, in a duo with a drummer or in a trio by adding a bassist.”

Andie is also happy to learn any particular songs her wedding clients want to hear as they celebrate their love. “You wouldn’t want someone that doesn’t understand you to perform on your wedding day,” she says.

“So, don’t be afraid to ask for exactly what you want – clear communication is the key to making sure that everyone comes out feeling happy about the experience.”

Hiring a singer who is wholly committed to their job is also essential. “Being passionate about what I do is what makes me great at my job,” Andie adds. “I am accountable, professional and always want to deliver a high-quality, heart-warming experience.”

From her perspective, Andie says she is absolutely thrilled when people resonate with her original music or the cover songs she adds her personal touches to. “Being able to connect with people, often strangers, is really special and I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” she says.

Andie is equally thrilled when she has the chance to perform in the Blue Mountains, her home base. “It’s an incredibly warm-hearted area and people are usually so genuine and kind. I also adore playing in insanely beautiful mountains locations, where you can see straight down over the valley.”

WILLEM SHERLOCK ROORDA

Largely self-taught, Willem Sherlock Roorda says his music style can only be described as “eclectic”. “I started out exploring flamenco and classical guitar, and have since branched out to jazz and blues, which are my heart and soul,” he explains. “But I can also play rock, folk and indie music, and I do a lot of live looping and percussion – I use a stomp box and harmoniser to get a really lush sound.”

Willem says his wedding clients tend to take full advantage of his versatility: “In the past I’ve performed fingerstyle classical guitar pieces through the ceremony then had a full dancefloor busting moves to Fleetwood Mac and Jimmy Hendrix songs for the reception.”

Having spent the past four years constantly gigging around the Blue Mountains, Willem says that as well as word-of-mouth recommendations he will often have couples approach him after a show and ask for a card.

“It’s the most beautiful compliment to have two people consider your music to be a part of such a special experience,” he adds. “I’ve performed at quite a few weddings now – from Blackheath to Palm Beach to the Hunter Valley – and I absolutely adore it.”

Seeing music as a means of connecting to people in a deeply personal way, Willem says his focus is on making every audience feel entertained as well as experiencing something wonderful. “I love what I do and treat every gig as an opportunity to move people,” he adds. “I also pride myself on being totally professional in how I conduct myself and my business.”

According to Willem, working as a musician in the Blue Mountains has been extremely rewarding. “People here are incredibly generous and have been willing to give me a go as an artist. I started out busking on the street and, through the help of this amazing community, I’ve been able to pursue my hairbrained dream of being a fulltime musician.” he says. “The beating heart of creativity permeates our region.”

PICCOLO BEAR

Vanessa Caspersz and Daniel Di Biase have been playing in bands since meeting at their Blue Mountains high school, which led to them forming the charmingly named Piccolo Bear just over a year ago. Describing themselves as a “folk acoustic duo”, the talented pair say they are influenced by musical pioneers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Louis Armstrong, Elvis and The Beatles, along with Ben Harper, Jack Johnson and fellow Australian duo Angus & Julia Stone.

“Our music style is very sweet and warm, with a duet of both our voices above delicate and smooth ukulele, banjo and guitar,” says Vanessa. “We have a wide-spanning repertoire that covers all genres, including folk, jazz, pop and hip-hop.”

In addition, Vanessa is an experienced MC and Daniel works as a deejay, which means they can cover all sound and music needs. “Being a wedding band has come naturally to us,”

says Vanessa. “We love playing and singing together, and the two of us balance each other out. Dan is so calmly on top of all equipment, logistics and sound, and I love bringing people together, focusing on the little details and making sure everyone is happy.”

In terms of selecting the music for your special day, Vanessa and Daniel say to make sure you have a mix of intimate musical moments and music that will have everyone dancing: “Keep in mind that music can fill out so many in-between moments that would otherwise be silent, helping to make your day flow smoothly.”

As far as choosing the wedding industry to work within, the pair say it’s always a privilege to be an integral part of a couple’s special day. “We love that we get to play and sing for people who are so radiant and happy with their loved ones,” says Daniel. “Every wedding we have played at is so unique and being in the Blue Mountains makes for some incredibly beautiful, natural and peaceful backdrops.”

3 LEURA CASCADES, LEURA: As you make your way downstream from the Leura Cascades Picnic Area, there are several vantage points that allow you to take

in the ever-flowing cascades before reaching the official lookout, where the reward is outstanding views across the glorious Jamison Valley.

4 BRIDAL VEIL FALLS, BLACKHEATH: Descending 180 metres into the Grose Valley below, this spectacular waterfall can be easily viewed from Govetts Leap Lookout. For a closer view, follow king parrots and yellow-tailed black cockatoos along the 1.2-kilometre track, which leads to a perfect picnic spot at the base of the falls. It’s the perfect place to propose!

5 SILVER CASCADES, MOUNT VICTORIA: This magical swimming spot is a little tougher to access than most, but the stunning destination is worth the steep, 400-metre descent. As you head down the zig-zagging trail, remind yourself that the more challenging the access, the more private and peaceful the experience.

Tell us briefly about Kings & Thieves and the ethos behind your business?

Kings & Thieves was born out of frustration and discontent with the prominent wedding photography style that seemed popular at the time, and the ‘life formula’ we’re all expected to abide by. We’ve never been ones to buckle to trends and prefer to forge ahead with what feels right for us.

How would you describe your photographic style?

Others describe our work as ‘dark and moody’, which is a broad term these days but I wouldn’t argue with this. We endeavour to make a true emotional connection with everyone we shoot, to capture them at their realest – no matter who they are, where they come from or who they love. That’s what it comes down to for us… Being authentic, inclusive and real, even if it means the art at the end of it all is a little moody.

You capture elopements all around the Blue Mountains. What do you love about shooting something so intimate?

Being there throughout all the action of the day. There’s generally less of a schedule, less stress and less drama because it’s usually just the couple getting married, us and another witness (or videographer, commonly)! We shot an elopement the other day that was totally secret. Not even their families or dearest friends knew about it.

And we can’t share anything from their day until they announce the news themselves using our photos, printed and revealed at a private party for their loved ones. That’s pretty special.

What are the key elements of a good shoot?

Light, light and light! You need light to inject drama and visual flair into a shot – without it you’re left with flat photos. On those overcast days, or if the lighting is crappy, instead of resorting to flash, pump the ISO [the setting that controls brightness], slow the shutter and find something else to add drama – wind, fog, texture. Or spice things up, if your couple is up for it. We use dynamic posing to capture intimate shots – running fingers through hair or getting as close to kissing as possible without making contact. Amp up the anticipation and shoot the real, especially if the couple break out in laughter.

Do you have any favourite Blue Mountains locations for shooting?

Many, and we’re always up for finding new places. We’re stupendously blessed in the Blue Mountains. You can literally pull up on any side road, walk 20 metres and you’re on the edge of the world.

Have you got any tips for couples planning an elopement shoot?

Traditional weddings just aren’t our thing, so we decided to elope, just the two of us and our baby. And we figured if we were going to have no guests, no decorations and no venue then we wanted the most epic scenery possible for our ceremony.

We choose an old, hidden lookout to exchange our vows; on a cliff edge that was etched with initials and opened up to an incredible view of the valley. We both had an instant feeling that this was absolutely the place for us to elope, with its perfect national park scenery and the cliff face that had us feeling on top of the world. It was secluded and secret, which is what an elopement is all about. “

The largest village in the lower Blue Mountains, Springwood occupies the traditional land of the Darug peoples and was named in 1815 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, who observed his wife drinking from a spring set among woody eucalypt trees. In turn, the main street is named after the Governor.

A walk along Macquarie Street provides the opportunity to view some of the village’s historic buildings – the heritagelisted Victorian Gothic railway station, constructed in 1884; Braemar, built as a residence in 1892 by prosperous cabinetmaker James Hunter Lawson and now a community centre and gallery; the Royal Hotel, refreshing the thirsty since 1881; and the striking 1895 sandstone Presbyterian Church, framed by a magnificent jacaranda.

Enroute, refuel at one of the local eateries. Set within the historic Oriental Hotel, Ori Café dishes up tasty burgers and shared plates. Butternut Café is one of the village’s hottest breakfast and coffee spots, and The Baker’s Wife Juicery & Salad Bar is aimed at the health-conscious – although baker Dayne Taylor also makes deliciously crunchy baguettes onsite.

When Hartley man Sam Hayden decided Meredith Warren was the woman he wanted to share the rest of his life with, he declared his intentions by taking out a full-page ad in the Blue Mountains Gazette.

“Last September, Sam took me for breakfast at Echoes Restaurant in Katoomba and asked the waiter to bring the Gazette over for me to read. I was flicking through and there was Sam’s ad, asking me to marry him,” recalls Meredith, who instantly replied with a resounding ‘Yes’.

“I decided to propose to Meredith in such a special way because she is such a special person,” says Sam. “There is nothing I wouldn’t do for Meredith and I wanted all of our friends who read the Gazette to share in this very special day in my life.”
