Parade Etiquette needs some work during the Portland Pride parade. I think I mention this every year, but I feel strongly about this and will likely mention it in 2012, too. Folks, when the color guard, the men and women in uniform carrying the flags and leading the parade, approaches your area, YOU stand up. Your children stand up. Everyone who is able stands up.

This action is taken to show respect for the American flag, for our country and for our freedoms. Please don’t tell me you don’t have any freedoms or rights, because that’s simply not true. We may not have all we want and should have, but we are still a nation of free people. You stand to show respect for our own LGBTQ service people who are carrying the flags—including our beloved rainbow flag—with pride, love and dignity. Respect the flag. Respect yourself.

Club Etiquette also came up in recent discussion. What does a bar owner, event promoter do when guests with differing agendas clash over sound levels? This is a conversation that actually ocurred last week, after the judges at Portland Idol became hoarse from trying to talk over boisterous customers who were oblivious or uncaring that a performance event was going on in front of them. Repeated shouts of “Shut the fuck up” had no impact whatsoever on the happy handful who were there to drink and party with no interest or regard for those attempting to sing.

So what do you do? The bar owner is naturally reluctant to offend paying customers—and laws of selection indicate that the loudest are usually those spending the most. Events such as Portland Idol are intended to draw in crowds of customers. The joy of competition is definitely lessened for performers and friends of performers when their chosen songs can’t be heard over the

First, a goodbye to a staunch friend and ally of the LGBTQ community, Betty Roberts, who, among her many accomplishments was the first woman appointed to the Oregon Supreme Court. Roberts passed away on June 25 at the age of 88.

Not to be confused with Gov. Barbara Roberts, who is thankfully still with us, Betty Roberts was one of the first strong women in Oregon politics. Roberts was a champion of gay rights starting as far back as the early ‘70s. I didn’t ever have the opportunity to meet her but was always aware and appreciative of the work that she had done.

In 2004 she reentered public life briefly to officiate at same-sex weddings during the infamous four days that Multnomah County attempted to crash through the barrage of barriers that exempt Oregonians from same-sex marriage. Betty Roberts paved the way for today’s female leaders such as Kate Brown and Tina Kotek. For this, and much more, we thank her.

Kudos to New York for being the sixth state to vote for marriage equality. This accomplishment comes on the 42nd anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, an event often identified as the catalyst for the current gay civil rights movement. Clearly America is not yet where many would like her to be, but let’s still celebrate the victories and achievements that in 42 years took New York from riots to weddings.

In the many articles that followed the news from New York, Oregon was—is— often mentioned as a state with high potential for being among the next to join the six. On June 29, Basic Rights Oregon held a community strategy session that explained concisely and in great detail the path they are following to determine not if, but when, action will be taken to place marriage equality on the ballots of Oregon voters. I was very impressed with the depth

roar of the crowd. One idea that comes to mind is to start the performance portion of the evening sooner, before the drinks go down and the decibels go up. Yelling at people seems to be largely uncomfortable and ineffective. Few folks want to be the one who steps up and says, “Hey, my friend is singing his heart out here, do you mind?”

Bottom line, I have no answer. Emily Post never got around to addressing this situation. The singers want to sing. The owner wants to sell drinks. The audience simply wants to be able to hear. The guys in back, who didn’t come out to be an audience, really don’t care. A little regard, a little respect for each other would go a long way.

Maybe we need a flag.

ortland Pride has come and gone. For the casual observer it would likely appear to have been a successful event. Credit is due Pride Northwest for the staging of the parade and the festival activities. Portland Pride is big, it’s growing and by no means does anyone think it’s an easy task to accomplish. This year Pride events were not followed by the slew of complaints that we usually hear immediately following the weekend. This change might be because the event was so well done; it might be because many people have given up trying to get answers to their queries and concerns.

There are, however, known queries and concerns about Pride Northwest, the nonprofit entity that organizes and coordinates the parade and waterfront festival events.

Just Out is preparing a list of these questions and will present them, professionally and respectfully, to the board of Pride Northwest.

We will report our findings, if not in the July 15 issue, as soon as possible thereafter.

I certainly hope that I don’t have to use this space to report that the organization failed to meet with us and provide answers to the questions that many of our readers are asking. I am optimistic for a respectful and informative interview and dialogue.

March 29, 1964-June 19, 2011 With his strong bear hug, dazzling smile and zest for life, Jose Israel Ornelas could immediately fill up a room with love and laughter.

He met his partner of 18 years, Al Munguia, in Jose Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico.

The two moved to San Diego shortly thereafter and later relocated to Portland, where Jose Israel left his mark in the hearts of everyone he encountered.

transitions Jose Israel lived his life to the fullest, enjoying time with family and friends, and never forgetting to tell people how much he loved them.

This was the gift he brought to everything he did. It reminded people of what matters most and to enjoy their time together.

In 2006, he became a founding member of Portland Latino Gay Pride (PLGP). Sharing stories of past experiences, he brought up â&#x20AC;&#x153;mariposa/butterflyâ&#x20AC;? as a term he had been called. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;mariposaâ&#x20AC;? is often used in Spanish as a negative reference to someone gay. PLGP decided to transform this to a positive and empowering image. It became the official symbol of the organization, thanks to Jose Israel.

His continued involvement with PLGP was critical to the growth and success of each celebration. He reminded us of the need to reach out to all segments of the community, to entertain, and of the positive difference PLGP was making in the community.

Beyond his contributions to Portland Latino Gay Pride, Jose Israel is best remembered for the love and joy he brought to the people in his life. He was a dedicated partner to Al Munguia.

He was so proud of his family and relatives in Guadalajara, Mexico. His strong and loyal friendship comforted and supported many.

Jose Israelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s smile always reminded us of what matters most in life and to enjoy every moment we as a community have together.

Jose Israel Ornelas was laid to rest in Guadalajara, alongside his grandmother and cousin, two important people in his life. A

David Henry Weber (Butch) February 22, 1946-June 20, 2011 David Henry Weber, 65 years old at the time of his passing, was a native Oregonian. He died at home in Molalla on June 20 of natural causes.

David was born on February 22, 1946 in Portland to David and Frances Weber of Montavilla. He moved to Oahu, Hawaii in the late â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70s and moved back to Oregon upon his retirement in 2010. He had one sister, Patricia Browning of LaFollette, Tenn. and a half brother, Edwin Weber of San Francisco, Calif.

David was a certified diving instructor and worked in the diving industry during his 26 years on Oahu. Previously he lived in Portland and worked for TWA, Bell Telephone and as a bartender at Dahl & Pennyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in downtown Portland. He loved to shop and collected various Oriental trinkets. He also loved music and old mystery movies.

Pride on Display?

To the Editor: I recently encountered a window display at Portland’s downtown Nike store in support of gay pride, which is exciting because it reflects the company’s willingness to publicly support the queer community in its fight for the same rights, recognition and legal protections as straight couples. However, the decision by certain members of the queer community to align with Nike, a multinational corporation that is notorious for its reliance on sweatshop labor, may prove antithetical to the liberatory aims of the GLBT community at large: to construct a society in which every citizen is respected. Consequently, Nike’s endorsement of gay pride primarily serves to expand their consumer base of goods produced within an environment of questionable working conditions, which is not empowering for either GLBT people or for industrial production workers.

Instead, members of the GLBT community should seek sponsorship and alignment with other companies that provide safe working conditions, and good wages and benefits for their workers.

Oregonians Ask Blazers to Stand Up Against Homophobia John Zeller, a student at Oregon State University, has filed an online petition with Change.org in the hopes that with enough signatures, it will convince the Portland Trailblazers to produce an “It Gets Better” video. Should the Blazers prove swayed by the petition, they’d be the first organization in the NBA to produce such a spot.

“Five [Major League Baseball] teams have already made videos and I think it’s time for the Blazers to make a statement,” Zeller said in a press release. “Portland has such a large LGBT community; it’d be huge for them to come out in support of a campaign like this.”

Traci Rose, vice president of communications for the Trailblazers, told Just Out that while the organization is now aware of Zeller’s petition, and a similar plea from retired Southridge High School teacher Rich Matkins, any move on the Blazers’ part would likely happen closer to the opening of the season in October. Rose noted that highprofile athletes are less available in the offseason to assist in getting the message to a more widespread audience.

“When we go out and do a campaign, we want to make sure we’re giving it its full respect,” Rose explained.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant and the Chicago Bulls’ Joakim Noah were both involved in high-profile incidences of homophobic remarks during this season’s NBA playoffs, and were both given stiff fines. In Major League Baseball, five teams responded to petition-driven campaigns to produce videos for “It Gets Better,” though as Rose pointed out, the swiftness with which baseball has responded makes sense considering their league is in season.

Larson, who spearheaded most of the attention last year when he devoted time on his program to discussing perceived negative effects on youth who might see the billboards, responded to the new campaign in a terse email reading simply, “Don’t like it.”

Like it or not, Pivot’s new billboard campaign features 17 10-by-22-foot boards and one extra-large one. They are expected to be in place for a month.

Paddle for Life Festival Races to Fight HIV/AIDS in SW Washington Dragon boat enthusiasts, novices and ordinary philanthropic folk alike converge at Vancouver Lake Park Saturday, July 16 for the annual Paddle for Life Festival.

Paddlers from corporate and community teams will compete on the water during the all-day event, which includes entertainment, food and lots of racing excitement.

To boot, all of the money donated goes directly to Martha’s Pantry in Southwest Washington to help those living with HIV/ AIDS. Paddle for Life is a nonprofit organization that helps raise money and awareness for community causes through the fastgrowing sport of dragon boating. The organization started in California four years ago and has donated thousands of dollars to local charities.

Event director Jeff Campbell of Double Fifth Dragon Boating reported that the event is filling up fast. Registration for race participants ends Friday, July 1.

“All you need are 10 to 12 people who want to have a great day of fun and at the same time support a great cause,” Campbell said via press release. “Anyone can participate; you don’t have to be an athlete. We supply everything the team needs, from

equipment to instruction. You just add the people.”

Boats were imported from China specifically for the Paddle for Life Festival, and are smaller than normal dragon boats, requiring only 10 paddlers as opposed to the traditional boats that need 22-24 paddlers.

“We are pleased to be working with Paddle for Life to start a local race and extend the sport of dragon boat racing to our community,” Campbell said.

Those interested in participating in this unique benefit event need not be experts, and those who don’t compete can still attend the festival, and donate to Martha’s Pantry or give money to the cause online.

In Other Words Downplays Closure Rumor, Opens New Lending Library Despite reports to the contrary, Portland’s In Other Words Feminist Community Center isn’t going anywhere.

“The rumors about In Other Words’ imminent closure are absolutely not true!” said IOW board treasurer Rose Krivulka.

“Volunteers and the board are working together tirelessly to revolutionize the structure of the organization, and we will emerge stronger, healthier and more vibrant both financially and within the community as a result.”

Part of this structural change, reported Krivulka, will include an innovative volunteer leadership program. Volunteers and the board are also working closely together to field applicants and are beginning to conduct interviews for the open interim executive director position.

“We are all excited about these changes and working hard to get things done,” Krivulka said.

Kick-Ass Karma Newport man takes a beating to stop anti-gay assault

Portland Police have charged two men in a June 25 assault in Northwest Portland against a gay man and the good Samaritan who stepped in to help.

Shawn Siefke, 28, and Christian Sanchez-Villavencio, 21, allegedly stopped a 30-year-old gay man to ask for directions near NW Second and NW Flanders at about 3 a.m. Saturday morning before pushing him to the ground and hurling gay slurs, according to police.

The attack on the gay man, who told police he did not want his identity publicized, was cut short when passerby Andrew Smith, 24, of Newport, stepped in to defend him. Siefke and Sanchez-Villavencio then allegedly turned on Smith, throwing punches and kicking him in the head while he was face down on the ground, according to a report from KOIN 6.

“I stepped in to help the man because I thought to myself, what if that was my little brother?” Smith told KOIN 6.

While police don’t encourage people to get directly involved in crimes in progress— being a “good witness” and calling police are the recommended approach—Simpson said if people decide to step in like Smith did, it’s important that they take into account their experience and comfort level.

“He put himself at risk [in a way] that a lot of people wouldn’t do,” Sergeant Pete Simpson said. “He knew the risks and was willing to get involved…. By all accounts, he did the right thing.”

when they returned to the area while police were still interviewing the victims.

Simpson said the gay victim’s minor injuries were treated on the scene, while Smith and Siefke were taken to the hospital for further treatment. KOIN 6 reported that Smith received a CAT scan before being released with non-life threatening injuries.

Siefke and Sanchez-Villavencio were both charged with third-degree assault and Siefke was charged with second-degree intimidation. Siefke is being held without bail at the Multnomah County Detention Center on a U.S. Marshal hold. According to Deputy U.S. Marshal Cory Cunningham, Siefke’s arrest violated his pre-trial supervision in an unrelated ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) matter. Sanchez-Villavencio was being held on $7,500 bail, but has since been released.

Intimidation in the second degree is a misdemeanor bias crimes charge characterized by either subjecting someone to â&#x20AC;&#x153;offensive physical contactâ&#x20AC;? or subjecting them to alarm by threatening either physical harm or substantial property damage. Intimidation 2 carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and $6,250 in fines.

Simpson said only Siefke was charged with intimidation because he was allegedly the only one using anti-gay language. If both men had used hate speech during the alleged attack, both would have been charged with intimidation one, which is a felony.

While there was no weapon involved in this case, a Shawn Siefke is listed as a mixed martial arts competitor at the Rose Garden.

One woman’s delight is another woman’s stink, or so it would seem when it comes to fragrance. Early on in my lesbian-identified years, I planned to attend a New Year’s dance.

But then I saw the flier: Office chairs would be available for those who wished to sit and dance, and it would be a scent-free environment. I did a double take at both lines. Wheeling around on office chairs didn’t sound that exciting, but it was the demand that I leave my perfume at home that caught me off guard. Since that time, scent-free environments have become more common, but I still begrudge not being able to wear a dab of my favorite perfume (Fresh’s Pink Jasmine is my current fav). What is wonderful to one person is not the same to others, including in the garden.

My top picks at this very moment for fragrance in the garden include jasmine, gardenia, heirloom roses, lilac, lily of the valley and a sweet, nectar-rich Cytisus battandieri dripping with a fruity pineapple smell. All are found in our garden, and I’m a sucker for any strangely scented plant. The 7-Up plant? Yep, I’ve grown it—and you know why, just from the name.

I recently did a shout out on Facebook and Twitter asking people what they thought smelled horrible, and the “winners” were lilies.

References to their overpowering stench causing headaches to reminding others of funerals and dreary church services abounded.

BY LEANN LOCHER Flower, Amorphophallus titanum or titan arum is a huge flowering plant with dramatic shape and color—but its scent, or stink, is most striking. Known to smell like a decomposing mammal, it attracts beetles and other pollinating insects drawn to its odor. This is one stinky lily.

I recently panicked when recognizing a scent with which many cat owners are familiar, this time in our living room. The aroma

wasn’t pretty. But then I stepped out onto the front porch and discovered the scent was overwhelmingly strong outside—and not coming from indoors. The elderberry or, to be more specific, the Sambuca nigra was in glorious bloom. I love this plant for many reasons: It’s easier and faster to grow, and its black foliage provides the perfect backdrop for a lively border filled with lime green and hot pink.

A favorite rose in my garden, Jude the Obscure is described as having the unusual fragrance of lemon, myrrh and peach.

But little did I know it would smell of cat pee when in full bloom.

Evidently the stench of cat pee is a common theme with plant scents. One suggestion Tweeted my way mentioned boxwood as a source of that (non)delightful scent, and juniper bushes used in many popular landscaping projects smell the same.

Cats are not the only pets to be referenced for unwanted scents from plants. A fellow Tweeter equated daisies with dog poop. While I agree that daisies don’t smell good, I had never thought of them akin to the scent of dog poop.

Fortunately in our garden, we have a “wall of scent” currently in full bloom, thick with fragrant pink jasmine and climbing roses.

On warm days, the fragrance carries throughout the garden, and it is reminiscent of neither cat urine, dog poop nor rotting flesh. Thank heavens.

Mariposa Moment Portland Latino Gay Pride spreads its wings with waterfront festival After five years as the official kickoff for Pride in Portland with its early June festivities, Portland Latino Gay Pride is shaking things up in 2011 with a midsummer date ( July 14-17) featuring a festival on the Eastbank Esplanade, a full day of events for the women and the near guarantee of warm summer weather.

“It was a significant discussion because it’s an investment,” says David Martinez, cofounder and chair of PLGP, “but folks felt ready.”

All signs pointed to an expansion of the event. PLGP, now in its sixth year, had outgrown its home at the Jupiter Hotel, more people were asking about the event during Portland Pride and the organization had been named Grand Marshal for the Portland Pride Parade.

“Because of that honor we can maximize our exposure, we can get people excited,” Martinez, 43, says. “So we’re excited—a little scared, but excited.”

This year at Portland Pride, Martinez was able to tell people, “Mark your calendars.

Pride continues.”

Martinez and the planning committee are building on the momentum from last year’s celebration, which he said maxed out the Jupiter’s capacity at 650 people and probably saw 1,000 visitors over the course of the festivities. This year, PLGP is planning for up to 1,000 people at one time and expects a total of 1,500 to 2,000 attendees.

If even half that many people pay the $5 suggested donation, PLGP will raise $5,000 for its scholarship fund—this year, Seattle’s Pride Foundation has offered to match festival donations up to $2,500.

“They’re doing that because they believe in us,” Martinez says.

“This celebration is for everyone, we really wanted to make that clear,” Martinez says.

But in the early years of PLGP, “a couple of segments of the population weren’t as involved. Women were one.”

That’s all changing in 2011. Although the participation of women has increased over the past few years, this is the first time PLGP will dedicate an entire day to the chicas.

“Portland Latino Gay Pride has been celebrating the Latino LGTBQ community since 2006. Latina (Chicas)-specific events were added to the tradition in 2008 with Chicas Who Brunch—an event designed to give Latinas a space to meet other Latinas in the Portland metro community,” says Vanessa La Torre, chair of Chicas CelebrAccíon (see profile, p. 23). “This year, we are expanding on this tradition by offering Chicas CelebrAcción—a full day of activities that offers a little of everything for everyone.”

In the spirit of inclusiveness, Chicas CelebrAccíon both honors LGBTQ Latinas and embraces all those who love them.

be who we are, or where we are today,” La Torre, 30, says. “Chicas CelebrAcción is a day to celebrate the Latina voice, especially the Latina LGBTQ voice. We hope that anyone and everyone can come celebrate us… regardless of how you identify—or don’t.”

Martinez says PLGP is also trying to make the event more accessible to Spanish-speaking Latinos. To that end, the festival will be presented in both Spanish and English. The longstanding involvement of bilingual newspaper El Hispanic News (publisher Melanie Davis co-founded PLGP with Martinez) helps reach Spanish speakers as well.

“I think it’s something we continue to recognize and want, to be inclusive of the entire community,” Martinez says. “In every community there’s diversity. We’re trying to find

ways to increase the participation of every segment of the Latino community.”

It was the recognition of that diversity in the midst of Portland Pride 2005 that inspired Martinez and Davis to start PLGP. “The first celebration was sort of a brainstorm vision that Melanie Davis and myself had at the Pride festival and parade,” Martinez explains. “We had heard about other Latino gay prides and, for both of us, it just seemed like an exciting possibility.”

At the time there was a Latino gay pride celebration in San Jose, Calif. While that event has since ceased, Chicago started an event the same year as Portland, and Washington, D.C. joined in the following year.

“What’s been great for us is when we’ve been able to connect with other Latino gay prides,” Martinez relates, just a few days before flying out to a Latino leadership conference in Cincinnati that would give him the opportunity to do just that.

The fact that more events are popping up around the country reflects the need for culturally specific Pride celebrations.

“From that first one we were just stunned by all the support and the interest and the personal stories we heard from people who did not realize that there were gay Latinos,” Martinez says. “And so [PLGP] sort of just grew from there.”

Martinez is quick to point out, however, that there were Latino events and organizations in town before PLGP was established.

Still, Portland Latino Gay Pride brings something different.

“What’s interesting is a lot of bars will have Latino nights—Boxxes and Embers and Silverado—so there’s definitely a population.

And then the pageants, there’s Poder Latino and Latin Look (see profiles, p. 21 and p. 19, respectively)— they’ve been around and been part of the community,” Martinez says. “I

think for us what’s unique is [that] we’re not a part of anything, we’re just volunteers and we try to bring everyone together.”

Each year, “everyone” seems to include more people, and from farther-flung locations.

“We’ve been growing each year and I think this year, with what we’re doing, we’re expecting to continue to draw [people] and become a destination for folks throughout the nation,” Martinez adds.

PLGP already draws people from the greater Portland area—Multnomah, Washington and Marion counties—as well as contingents from Seattle and Los Angeles. Portland is in a unique position to put on such an event—its Latino LGBTQ population is large enough to organize, but not so big that it overwhelms the greater LGBTQ community.

That’s the case in cities such as San Jose and Los Angeles, Martinez says, where there is often a Latino tent and a Latino event as part of the main pride celebrations.

“I think in Long Beach someone commented, ‘Well, it’s Latino pride all the time because of the sheer numbers,’” Martinez

shares. “Here, I think we need to have this very specific focused celebration because the population numbers aren’t as high…. To have a very targeted celebration and to bring [the] community together around the Latino gay pride experience is important.”

PLGP is strengthening the community behind the scenes, too. In the process of planning an event to unite the Latino LGBTQ population, new leaders (like La Torre, who is in her first year on the committee) emerge to make significant contributions to the celebration.

“What I’m most excited about, actually, is the volunteer planning committee,” Martinez says. “To me, personally, that is what inspires me. As long as there’s that energy, that interest and that pride—‘cause that’s the other part—we can all throw great parties, but this is more than a party for us, this is an opportunity to have our Latino gay GLBT experience shine. And that’s why we do it.”

Portland Latino drag world gets international spice with Latin Look Portland’s Latino drag circuit is shooting to be more than events for locals. It’s going international.

The annual pageant run, called Latin Look, is a competition for local crowns, of course. But organizers are attempting to expand it to other parts of the country, and the world. In addition to crowns for Miss and Mr. Gay Oregon Latin Look, another pageant, now in its sixth year, is held for International Latin Look. In 2011 the global event will have its first truly global contestant—a performer from Mexico City.

Pageant producer David Zambrano, 48, is excited that the international pageant is gaining momentum. Contestants have come from other states before and from Puerto Rico. The winner of Miss International Latin Look 2010 was a New Yorker, Eva Zanzler. A few small preliminary pageants have even been held in other states.

Zambrano aspires to one day produce a U.S. pageant in Portland and the international event on an island like the Dominican Republic. An international location would make it easier for contestants from other countries to participate, he says.

“It takes time to prepare papers for people coming to the country,” Zambrano explains. “We have to send letters to embassies and immigration and do a lot of paper work.”

Closer to home, though, the Oregon Latin Look pageant enters its 14th year.

The name “Latin Look” is a sign that the pageant is open to all contestants, not just Latinos. Latinos look different all over the world, Zambrano says, so no particular “look” is a standard.

But Jeffrey Rivera, 21, who as Ashley Jo’Elle was named Miss Gay Portland Latin Look 2011, says the event is about “being spicy.”

“It’s not necessarily about looking Latin,” he says. “It’s just about looking beautiful.”

As for Miss Gay Oregon Latin Look, this year’s champ says he was shocked he won—it was his first competition.

“It was a total surprise for me because I saw some really pretty contestants,” says Isabel Castillo, 32, who competed as Ebony Welch. “And, like, I’m a little, um, big, so I was kind of intimidated by all the girls.”

Castillo adds, “I’m really thankful to these people who are doing the pageant because there are a lot of people like me that want to do it, and sometimes there isn’t an opportunity.”

In 2009, a small group decided that something needed to be done about the stigma of being gay in the Portland Latino community.

That group became SOMOS, whose goal was to be the first social and educational organization for Latinos. The word “somos” roughly translates to “we are all”—as in “we are all Latino, we are all gay, we are all lesbian,” says Cesar Pecori, one of SOMOS’ founding members.

The group is relatively new, but it’s trying to get its name—and purpose—to the masses. SOMOS has had a vibrant presence in the Pride parade with a Carnival-inspired float, flamboyant headdresses, balloons, feathers and dancers.

SOMOS seeks to be a household name in the Latino population because its very mission is to connect the community. When it was established two years ago, there was no specific group that targeted LGBTQ Latinos, Pecori explains.

In his community particularly, Pecori says he noticed many people were becoming increasingly isolated.

The founding members also thought it was important that the organization be one by and for Latinos. They envisioned a place where folks could feel comfortable and have no fear of discrimination.

“We wanted others in the community to see that the group was led by Latinos,” Pecori says.

SOMOS holds meetings in the offices of Edúcate Ya, a nonprofit for the well-being of the Latino community. SOMOS organizes events, parties and support groups, and it also serves as a bridge to other resources. For example, sometimes Latinos need help finding medical or legal services geared toward them.

Poder Latino holds integral position in LGBTQ community For the past 15 years, the individuals at Poder Latino have put their best foot forward to help out those less fortunate. As a nonprofit organization, the group produces colorful, sassy and scintillating showcases, all devoted to raising funds for one person in the community per year who, for one reason or another, is in need.

Israel Cruz, 37, has been with Poder Latino for the past six years, and as the organization’s president, he can attest that though their fundraising capacities and scope aren’t as large as other nonprofits, the mission is just as big. Through events like the Sunday Latino Nights at Embers and their annual Mr. and Miss Gay Poder Latino pageants, Poder Latino links the community to LGBT Latinos, lots of drag and even more music.

Proceeds from this year’s events will help ease the medical costs of April Bablo, a Portland resident who’s been diagnosed with cancer.

“We look for the person who needs it the most,” says Cruz, emphasizing that beneficiaries need not be Latino, or LGBT. Portland Latino Gay Pride chair David Martinez says Poder Latino is an important part of the Latino LGBT community, noting that several Mr. and Miss Gay Poder Latino titleholders have performed during past Latino Gay Pride festivals.

“They do a great job of bringing [the] community out,” Martinez says. “For some people, it’s the only chance they get to have fun, let loose and be among the Latino LGBT community, both Spanish speaking and with similar life experiences.”

Martinez cites the particular cultural impact of Poder Latino’s annual pageant productions.

“They challenge the strict Latino gender roles and cultural expectations, and broaden our community’s understanding of who we are,” Martinez explains.

With this year’s pageants slated for the fall at Embers—dates could not be confirmed as of press time—Cruz and Poder Latino hope to continue their philanthropic efforts, and welcome all to take part.

“We’re a Latino organization, but we’re open to help anywhere,” Cruz says. “If people want to join us, too, you don’t need to be Latino. As long as you’re willing to help, everybody’s welcome.”

Voice of the MAX Enrique Andrade is going places, along with you Those who aren’t native Spanish speakers might not realize this, but the voice of the Spanish announcer on the Portland MAX light rail is incredibly sexy.

That voice—the one that tells you “puertas a la derecha”—belongs to Enrique Andrade, 38, a voice artist and an active member in Portland’s LGBTQ Latino community.

“The sexy voice, that’s a gift, I guess,” Andrade says when asked about the compliment. “I haven’t explored the [phone sex] lines—I would rather sound sexy in a commercial or on a public transportation system.”

In addition to Andrade’s work for transit agency TriMet, which runs the

MAX, Andrade has done voice work for GPS systems in high-end cars and for promotional videos for tourism in Belize, among other efforts. For his day job, he’s a court certified Spanish interpreter for the Oregon Judicial Department.

He’s also a regular actor at El Centro Milagro Theatre (or Miracle Theatre) in Southeast Portland. Andrade recently starred in Ana en el Trópico (Anna in the Tropics) and Entre Villa y una Mujer Desnuda (Between Pancho Villa and a Naked Woman).

But some of his most meaningful work, he says, is done at the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) of Portland, a congregation that welcomes LGBTQ members.

“It’s been the place where I’ve been able to reconcile my sexuality with my spirituality, and it continues to be a very enlightening journey,” he says.

Andrade is now a regular volunteer at the church, but he first attended there with a heavy heart. After he turned 30, he was discouraged by the lack of options available to men who were no longer in the twentysomething gay limelight.

With that milestone, he thought most gay men somehow disappeared.

“I felt called to MCC because I thought it would probably be a good place to learn how to die,” he says. “I’m not saying it’s a rational thought, but it was the initial thought.”

Now, however, the voice of the MAX believes he has several important stops to make in his life.

“I found there is something to look forward to in my thirties. And my forties. And my fifties,” Andrade says.

“There is a process of growth.”

Vanessa La Torre walks the talk to help those in need Vanessa La Torre, 30, can be a ball of energy. During Portland Pride, she promoted Latino Gay Pride so feverishly— dancing and talking all weekend—that she literally lost her voice. “This is my body’s way of telling me I need to relax,” she says a week later.

When La Torre can talk, she does it fast. She believes communication is vital to the LGBTQ Latino community, and she has a lot to say.

La Torre works for Cascade AIDS Project in the supportive services department, where she speaks with families who have members living with HIV. She helps people cope with any number of situations they may face.

She also volunteers with Latino Gay Pride and is a co-chair of the Chicas CelebrAccíon, an event created to foster networking opportunities for LGBTQ Latinas in Portland.

In all of these roles, she emphasizes the role of community and its ability to encourage communication about important issues—especially ones surrounding sexual health. She has been working in the sexual health field for more than a decade.

A strong community is fundamental for individuals to make good decisions about sexual health, La Torre says. For the Latino population, family is key. That bond—the colloquial expression for it is “familismo,” La Torre says—is what can help people when they’re in crisis. The community forms the primary support network.

a lot of LGBTQ Latinos who weren’t able to have open discussions with their families or the community in general. The stigma of being a sexual minority led some to sexual experimentation that would be risky, she says.

“People aren’t talking about healthy sexuality, especially in the Latino community,” La Torre says. Her work with CAP helps people learn to talk about healthy sexuality at different stages in life—conversations she says can help people overcome barriers and form communities of their own.

Break out the Aqua Net and say a prayer for the ozone layer, Hairspray is back. The 1988 John Waters film-turned-Broadway smash returns to the Portland metro area in a new production by, fittingly enough, Tigard’s Broadway Rose Theatre Company.

With its sock-hops, teen crushes and doo-wop, the coming-of-age circa 1962 tale of high hopes and higher hair charmed audiences, introducing the ever-eccentric Waters to a family-friendly mainstream. That’s not to say the auteur’s signature quirk is lacking, what with big-boned mama Edna scripted to be performed in drag (Divine in Waters’ film, Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein in the stage adaptation and, later, John Travolta in the 2007 film version of the musical itself ).

For the Broadway Rose production—which launches the company’s 20th summer season—Dan Murphy takes the matriarchal reins to Blythe Woodland’s Tracy Turnblad, the “pleasantly plump” teen with aspirations to dance on an urban television show. Turnblad is more than a fictional heroine of fat activism—she’s a fierce mover and shaker who stands up against bullying, racism and, of course, champions big girls with big hair.

With crowd-pleasing numbers by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (“I Can Hear the Bells,” “Good Morning, Baltimore,” “Cooties”), Hairspray remains an enduring Technicolor delight for nostalgia fans of all ages. You can’t stop the beat, or the bouffant—to quote a YouTube salon celeb, “BeWeave it.”

A Drop In The Bucket Water in the Desert’s Mizu Desierto embarks on First Annual 1 Fest For its inaugural run, the First Annual 1 Festival—brainchild of Portland choreographer Mizu Desierto and performer Sean Bowie—wraps modern dance, theater, workshops, one-person shows and more into an existential epoch. Particularly noteworthy is the “New Women in Butoh” performance schedule July 8-9, which includes butoh theater by Desierto herself, Seattle’s Sheri Brown and New York artist Vangeline, who’s currently working on a film with James Franco and Winona Ryder that features Vangeline’s dancing.

The craft of butoh dance is defined, even by its purveyors, as indefinable—a fluid range of motions are improvised by a sense of internal triggers. According to her bio, Desierto’s own style broaches themes of personal truth and transformation through dance by “focusing on the integration of the dancer’s energetic, kinesthetic and emotional states through movement.” Desierto notes the dance’s foundations as being highly linked to societal oppression of homosexuality.

“Butoh, from its very origins, was a transgender expression,” explains Desierto, whose name translates to “desert water,” and whose Water in the Desert nonprofit artistic collective is presenting the 1 Festival. “The dance has been and continues to be something which ferociously explores the masculine, feminine, hermaphrodite and everything in between.”

The 1 Festival’s multi-day lineup is rounded out by Sean Bowie’s petulant production Drunken Fucker, Hand2Mouth ensemble member Erin Leddy’s performance of My Mind is Like an Open Meadow, and much more.

The first day of spring term 2011, I left the university and rode on a standing-room-only bus wearing uncomfortable shoes and feeling overheated. With one hand I managed to text my friend Sarah, telling her I might need to get off the bus and have her pick me up. My chest felt wrapped with a large band being tightened by a vice. Air would not enter my lungs and I wondered if I would pass out. It seemed a large object was sitting on me, crushing me, and the longer I felt that way, the more worried I became. Sarah told me I would be okay and to take slow breaths and focus on everything being fine. She’d walked me through this before. I wasn’t ill, I wasn't having a heart or asthma problem—I was having a panic attack.

Anxiety is the most prevalent mental illness in the United States, affecting more than 40 million people and costing upwards of $42 billion a year in medical costs. There are many variations of anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorders and phobias. Most affect women more than men, with the exception of social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders, which affect both genders equally.

I have general anxiety and occasional panic disorder when under a tremendous amount of stress. I experience muscle tension, fatigue, restlessness, difficulty sleeping, irritability, edginess and gastrointestinal discomfort.

I frequently wake up in the middle of the night, plagued by fear or situations real or imagined. I worry about money, deadlines and homework assignments. I obsess over my current annoyance or what I would do if my partner were killed in a car accident or left me for another woman. A tape in my head loops around and around, adding increasingly dreadful details and images until I get out of bed and do something to redirect my thoughts. As much as I would like to make the tape stop on my own, I can’t. I try to tell myself to relax, but

My anxiety has both negative and positive consequences and, in order to cope with this chaos in my life, I have to focus on its positive aspects and give it credit for helping me to achieve. Sometimes I capitalize on my periods of anxiety and use them to complete tasks, taking on projects or making long mental lists of things to do, allowing my anxiety to drive me. I fear that without something tangible to focus on, my anxiety will consume me. I know that in many ways it has shaped my personality and who I am in the world. I must believe it has brought me closer to my goals and let me experience life in ways I otherwise would not have been driven to. There must be something good about it.

I don’t know if I will ever have the calm life I wonder about. It’s possible that when my children are grown, I'll have much less going on and fewer episodes of panic and sleepless nights. It’s also possible they will get worse.

At this point, I can only accept the condition as a part of me and continue to use the tools I have to deal with it. I must push through the difficult times and pause to appreciate the quiet and beautiful moments. It is drawing on that peace that helps me along.

It took me many years to realize that I had a physical condition, and I often turned to unhealthy ways to cope with my symptoms.

After my third baby, I suffered from postpartum depression and went on medication— the first time I coped effectively. Looking back, I realize that anxiety has been a part of my life for a very long time. “Dog mauls child,” the newscaster announced. “Details at 6.” I turned to my partner: “Well, we know it wasn’t a pitbull. If it were, they’d be screaming it.”

There was a time—as an R.E.I.-style dyke with two Labrador retrievers—that pitbulls struck fear into my heart. One day my partner came across an emaciated female pitbull with five very small mixed-breed puppies; someone had abandoned them in the freezing rain in a North Portland park. Impressed with the mama’s calm demeanor under duress, we ended up keeping one of the pups and I became an accidental but devoted owner, friend, and protector of the bully breeds.

Many municipalities have outlawed pitbull and pitbull-type dogs, the current rogues of the canine world. Our neighbors to the north in the city of Vancouver just considered—and, fortunately, rejected—just such a ban. Here in Oregon, the 6 o’clock news reported the toddler was killed by the dog attack about which I heard the headline. As I guessed, it was not a pitbull. Though the breed involved is often used as a guard dog, no one decried its vicious nature or suggested it be banned.

As a society we seem to need a villain, someone or something to distract us from critical issues we could sink our teeth into and make real headway solving if we could just get over our hysterical finger-pointing. More children die each year from abuse by caregivers than die from attacks by all kinds of dogs

BY MARY MANDEVILLE, DC combined. More children drown in swimming pools or die in car accidents. The chances of being killed by a lightning strike are higher than the chances of being killed by a dog. But we love drama, and the specter of the monster pitbull and its sometimes real and sometimes imagined “gangsta” owner satisfies our need for sensation.

I have met, worked with and fostered numerous pitbull dogs. These pooches long to gain the approval—and the laps and pillows— of their human companions. The qualities oldtime breeders valued for a dog in the pit—tenacity, fortitude, loyalty, determination—serve well in search and rescue, drug and bomb sniffing, therapy and making wonderful family pets.

In a recent study of 122 dog breeds conducted by the American Temperament Testing Society, pitbulls achieved a passing rate equal to standard poodles and better than golden retrievers, beagles, Chihuahuas and a host of others. Even dogs rescued from fighting operations (e.g., the infamous Vick dogs) have earned Canine Good Citizen status.

As with any breed of dog, pitbulls who are abused, neglected, starved and otherwise mistreated can, but don’t always, become aggres-

sive to humans. Many folks nod their heads at this. “It’s all in how you raise ‘em,” they say.

“It’s not the dogs, it’s the owners.” But banning the dogs does nothing to change the behavior of people. In the ‘70s, German shepherds were the bad dogs of the day, in the ‘80s, Doberman pinschers.

A couple of years ago, a legislator introduced a bill to ban bully breed dogs in Montana. My sister is active in local politics. She had never seen more attendees at a committee hearing on any issue at any time. Passion was high, with sentiment running about 10 to 1 against the ban. Among the comments: “Our son was mauled by a black Lab. But we’re not here to suggest Labs—or pitbulls— be banned. We’re just looking for owner responsibility.”

Nobody’s suggesting a ban on him, though I wish they would.”

“We had two dogs when our child was born, a cocker spaniel and a pitbull. One of them started snapping at the baby and threatening to bite her. We had to get rid of it. We still have the pitbull.”

Consider these statistics. Of the dogs involved in fatal attacks: • 90-97 percent (depending on the source) are not spayed or neutered.

• 84 percent have been abused, neglected, and are not properly contained.

• 80 percent are chained dogs.

• 78 percent are not kept as pets, but as guards or implements of protection.

• 3 out of 4 attacks on children involve the family dog.

Judging a dog by its build, ears, shape of head and slant of eyes is nonsense. Due simply to the skin they were born into, good dogs and responsible owners are punished along with the ill-temperamented and poorly bred, the negligent and criminal. Judge the deed, not the breed.

We’d improve safety by addressing social issues underpinning cycles of abuse and neglect across all classes. Unless we address the reasons people want menacing dogs along with the reasons they cruelly mistreat them, there will be dangerous dogs of one breed or another.

Histrionic attitudes about pitbulls may sell newspapers and grab viewers for poorly conceived evening news clips. But they do little to help us to a saner, safer future.

Out, Not Over With Portland Pride 2011 in the books, a look back, and ahead Well that was a time, now wasn’t it?

Not so fast. Pride isn’t over—as we’ve all been reminded, from coast to coast and across Oregon. While Portland Pride proper may be done for another year, the season of statewide celebrations is just getting started, from Vancouver’s annual Saturday in the Park event to Mid-Columbia Pride and, back in town, the booming Portland Latino Gay Pride scene (our coverage begins on p. 18).

We’re on it, of course, and will continue to be so throughout the summer, along with ongoing recaps of the folks who made Portland’s 2011 festivities special, folks like the newly revved-up Dykes on Bikes. And don’t forget the photos, lots and lots of photos.

While the memories of Portland Pride 2011 continue to be logged and filed, Facebook photos tagged, rainbow flags still happy in their staffs, a community takes a breather, the biggest party of the year over and done with. Well, some in the community, that is. An arguably larger contingent has yet to store the neon short shorts, the face paint, the smiles that come along with representing the LGBTQ community in a very public setting. Dykes on Bikes revels in resurgence

They were tough to miss during the 2011 Portland Pride Parade: a veritable legion of leathered-up lesbians rumbling a horde of Harley Davidsons down the road. The volume of the motors was no accident. The size of the group was no accident. Dykes on Bikes was back, in bigger numbers—and they’re ready to bring the noise to Pride all over the state.

Now led by Melanie Davis, longtime Portland Latino Gay Pride Chicas Celebration organizer and publisher of El Hispanic News, and her partner Gabriela Kandziora, Dykes on Bikes has witnessed a resurgence in participation and visibility—especially during Portland’s Pride Parade, when 38 bikes putted in unison to the delight of onlookers.

“I think motorcycling for women in general is becoming more popular,” Kandziora explains. “People are attracted to the track record we’ve set with our riding in the past.”

The couple launched a Facebook page called “Pride Rides” in order to better connect Dykes on Bikes with the larger Oregon Pride community. The exposure has helped generate networking opportunities with other organizations such as Eugene Pride and Lincoln City’s Iris Pride Festival; Davis and Kandziora hope to organize rides for both events.

In addition, the couple spearheaded this year’s pre-parade Dykes on Bikes breakfast at Dingos—a Mexican grill located on Southeast Hawthorne—to coordinate with riders while spurring momentum for the upcoming event. The breakfast is now slated to be a Dykes on Bikes tradition before the group rides in future Portland Pride parades.

Dykes on Bikes hope to hear from the larger community about other destinations where the group can show their spirit. Yes, those hogs could get even louder come 2012.

“We thought if we could get more camaraderie in Dykes on Bikes to other parades around the state, it would be a lot more fun for everyone,” Davis says. “We won’t be surprised if our numbers have doubled next year.”

Remember when MTV’s The Real World was relevant? Yes, I’m convinced that was a real time that actually existed, long before RW casts devolved into shirtless, vapid drunks. No, I’m not your grandfather and I’m not demanding that you kids get off my lawn. Think pre-Andy Cohen and the relentless Bravo machine, preWill and Grace—at least before it really became gay. Before that, the only homos we saw frolicking onscreen were, ostensibly, the smattering of token gays gracing Real World seasons.

Call it the compelling gay arc—starting with Pedro in San Francisco and ending, I’d argue, in New Orleans with Danny Roberts.

The Real World: New Orleans (the first) happened over a decade ago. Perspective: We had just survived the (non-)apocalyptic Y2K debacle, had no idea we’d stare down the horrors of 9/11 and W. was still months away from being appointed president. It was the year 2000 and, looking back, we seemed wholly naïve and innocent. Remember all we thought the new millennium would bring? Well, it did bring us Danny, the blonde, clean-cut, allAmerican gay who came out to the country during his inaugural van ride to the Belfort Mansion in New Orleans.

I was a young, idealistic gay, convinced folding jeans at the Gap was the most prestigious job in the city. Having recently come out to my hyper-religious family, I dealt with the rough aftermath by drinking, cavorting with gentlemen, fancying myself an indispensable fashionista and watching Danny

BY DANIEL BORGEN Nostalgia is at times subtle and quiet, back again, procuring a stack of copies for sometimes harsh, always compelling us to remember, to scrutinize.

Roberts. Obviously he was aesthetically pleasing—but he represented much more than another fantasy notch on my made-up celebrity bedpost.

Danny weathered religious oppression (remember that peculiar, hip-hop loving, superCatholic roommate who repeatedly declared Danny hell-bound?) and famously brought attention to “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” When his military boyfriend, Paul, was on set, Paul’s face remained blurred throughout episodes.

And we witnessed a strained family dynamic when Danny’s Christian kinfolk visited.

I so related that I had a framed picture of him that traveled with me from abode to abode. Ever a sucker for tangible proof of objects of my affection—signed Sleater-Kinney record, autographed Rufus Wainwright photo—I trust the tactile as a stopgap when memory fails me. The month Danny graced the cover of Out magazine, I sprinted from work to the bookstore across the mall and

scanning the crowd, searching for his boyfriend. I sauntered up to him, managing to refrain from creating a spectacle. No small feat—I’m sort of known for a spectacle. Once, I was so elated to see Sleater-Kinney at an instore record signing, I tripped during my approach, dropping all I held, spilling the contents of my man-purse all over the floor. Like the band, Danny was gracious, patient—and I finally got the snapshot I always wanted.

Nostalgia is at times subtle and quiet, sometimes more potent or harsh, always compelling us to remember, to scrutinize. It masquerades as a visit from old friends who distract you from current worries, even reminding you who you are. With said friends, time inevitably passes, but it can feel, albeit briefly, as if it’s frozen. Nostalgia can mean stumbling upon members of your favorite band or meeting and greeting a revered, accidental gay icon like Danny.

Whether or not said icon abhors his old moniker doesn’t matter much. He still evokes seemingly simpler days, ones before digital recorders and on-demand gratification, times when I’d hole up in my apartment on a Saturday morning, watching a dozen episodes of his show back to back. And I still have that photograph—it’s moved from prominently placed frame to refrigerator door, an obscure part of a larger collage of pictures and postcards. I doubt I’ll ever throw it away.

For Pride, a couple of old, dear friends visited, to partake in the weekend’s big gay festivities.

One of them, Gino, worked alongside me during my retail heyday and knows better than anyone my preoccupation with The Roberts.

Come Pride Saturday evening, still aching from an all-night feathered theme party (really) the night prior, I marched my cohorts to Blow Pony. They had no idea the glorious monstrosity awaiting them; I think Blow Pony could take up five city blocks and still boast lines 200 deep, endlessly wrapping around corners.

Outside on the patio, standing shoulder to shoulder with the usual suspects, acquaintances whispered Danny’s name. Wearing vodka goggles, I squinted—looking, but sure they were wrong. No way, I thought. What the hell would he be doing here? Sufficiently lubricated, I decided to march up to the mystery man at whom half the bar pointed. (Not that me marching up to a stranger at a bar is some arduous task.)

It starts before my alarm goes off. My eyes open, focus on the wall where the morning sun streams in the window. My thoughts begin coming, rapid-fire—fuck, it’s too early to be awake. I’m sore as hell and don’t want to move.

Why didn’t anyone warn me how brutal yoga school could be? A steady stream of thoughts chug into my mind, one after another at increasing speed. What am I doing in New York, anyway? What classes are today? Is it the weekend yet? My cell phone alarm sounds its fake rooster sounds to herald the new day. Fuck, I think, hitting the snooze button. Freight Train Brain.

I walk out of my bedroom, step into the bright kitchen of my ashram apartment. Outside, a small boat makes its way down the Erie Canal, past train tracks and a sign welcoming the reader to North Tonawanda, Niagara County—2,656 miles from home, I note sadly. What’s even going on in Portland? I wonder, run through a thousand possibilities in my mind—Timbers hooligans rioting, gays wandering the rainy waterfront for Pride, Mt. Tabor erupting.

My roommate Serena steps out of her bedroom in a purple lululemon top and a sleepy grin. “Morning, sunshine,” she says, walking into the kitchen with the purposeful swagger of a professional wrestler—appropriate, considering her time spent as a WWE Diva.

“Morning, darling. What’s the lineup for today?”

She pours sweetener into a cup of coffee.

“Even worse,” she says. “In boot camp, you just have to work out a bunch. We work out a bunch and then spend hours studying the theory behind it. Just don’t think about it.”

“Easier said than done,” I reply, clicking on a song.

“Don’t want to think too much, it makes me think too much, keeps my mind on my mind,” Henry Rollins growls, speaking the truth. “It overloads me. I want to disconnect myself.”

I set down my bag and kick my shoes off at the door of the yoga studio, set them in a jumbled pile with the other students’ footwear. I rush to the practice room and throw the door open, get hit in the face with a humid wall of heat. The Bikram yoga room is equal parts laboratory and torture chamber— 105-degree heat, mirrors reflecting your sweaty face back at you unapologetically. If you can find peace here, I think to myself, already starting to sweat, finding it in the rest of your life is a snap.

I lie face up on my mat like the rest of the students, eyes closed, thoughts stampeding.

Okay, f ine, I declare inwardly as an experiment, I call a truce. No rituals, no f ixations, no numbness. You race, I state to my mind, and I’ll watch.

My chest rises and falls, beads of sweat forming. Outside, a train passes by, its whistle calling out for attention, rumbling past the building. I feel the floor vibrate with its passing, let it shake my body and be present in my ears without attaching to it, without aversion.

The train passes away, the room stills—I breathe, watch, smile. The instructor walks into the room. “Good morning, everyone,” she says, the students sitting up to face her in unison. “Welcome to yoga.”

The Yoga Sutras—the texts upon which the practice of yoga is based—are concerned primarily with practices and philosophies that lead to “the cessation of the whirlings of the mind.” When I first read this line, I gasped, stunned by the accuracy of the phrasing—the concise way it explained what was happening when my thoughts fired through my head as though shot by a semiautomatic weapon. I’m someone with a mind wired for whirling, someone who, like Rollins, gets overloaded to the point where I just want to disconnect myself.

The elevator door slides open and I jump inside, a yoga mat in one hand and a bag of anatomy textbooks in the other. The thoughts keep racing—What if I got stuck in the elevator? I check that my phone is in my pocket, check again. I, like many of those with minds prone to whirling, tend to think of lots of means to temporarily disconnect ourselves— anxious rituals, obsessive fixations and good ol’ fashioned chemical-induced numbness.
