Malaysia has recently been hit by widespread flooding, which was observed in various states throughout the country between Saturday, December 17th, and Sunday, December 19th. Heavy rains began to fall on Friday, but the intensity of the rain increased significantly on Saturday. More than 34,000 people have been displaced as a result of severe floods in at least six states, including Selangor, forcing the mobilisation of Malaysia’s military forces and police to assist with the flood evacuation effort. Unit C focuses on current relief trends and their design implications for the communities who are vulnerable and also in need of humanitarian supports. How can we effectively advocate for policies that help the disaster victims? How can humanitarian design and building contribute to the saving of lives, the protection of sustainable development, and the promotion of peacebuilding in a larger framework of community and resilience, while also honouring fundamental human rights for safety and shelter.

‘THE DISASTER’ poster by Long Jiyang

According to our observations and experiences during the site visit, inhabitants in Hulu langat are accustomed to flooding; nonetheless, the current flood incident was particularly terrible and unexpected. Residents are fearful as a result of the property loss and huge destruction, as everything they own has vanished. Some people may have developed trauma as a result of their desire to protect their child and themselves in dangerous situations, such as hiding in the ceiling or on the roof tops. Due to future possibilities, the occurrence may have caused a decline in land value.

We picture regulating the water level as a hope and reaction to the situation. Allowing for safe river activity as well as safe riverside settlements. Bringing the river back to its former glory of indulgence and love.

Microhome Competition For the MICROHOME / Edition No 4 architecture competition, participants are invited to submit their designs for a micro home – an off-grid modular structure that would accommodate a hypothetical young professional couple (which will be used as an example of family size throughout the competition series). The only requirement is that the structure’s total floor area does not exceed 25 m2 ; beyond that, participants are encouraged to be as creative as possible.

As there is no specified competition site, project designs can be set within any hypothetical site of any size, in either a city or countryside location anywhere in the world. The jury will favour sustainable designs and those projects that look to solve economic, social, and cultural problems through the establishment of new architectural methods.”

‘modular village’ system

Why stop at microhome? when you can design a micro-village. A perfect off grid micro village and its ‘tolong-menolong’ community in a flood prone area. Malay vernicular architecture elements are added incorporated into the microhome design to make it truly belong to the site and to create the sense of belonging.

In order to create a perfect flood-proof home, many factors needed to be taken into considerations such as flood resilient design strategies, water-proof material, transformable spaces that is able to react to different situations and so on.

Site Opportunities.

Since the beginning of time, human civilization has always settled near water, especially rivers, as it is a main source of needed food, cleaning, drinking and so on.

Naturally, they will eventually build houses and provide accommodation near rivers. The district of Hulu Langat, Selangor in Malaysia is blessed with nature’s gift of a wide stretch of river cutting through its land.

Sadly, as time goes by, the river is slowly becoming more and more under-appreciated and being taken for granted, with people throwing rubbish into the river, polluting it and clogging it up, which is one of the main reasons that causes the flood.

27

the big idea

If we look at Hulu Langat today, they do have some flood mitigation strategies in place, such as raising their houses on stilts, and I wonder why they don’t go all out? Is it possible to balance nature and human comfort? Why not build houses all the way to the top of a tree to create a treetop community?

Since I suggested they live in the treetops, I’m wondering whether their primary mode of mobility may be cable cars and flying foxes to keep them connected even if the village is flooded again.

What if you could filter the flood all year and have a controlled flood event, more likea festival that happens once a year to cleanse the village? If tourism were to expand here, a yearly event would be more appealing to me. A large pool can be used for children to play in while the elderly supervise. Tourist-drawing kayak races could be held here to boost villagers’ income.

NARRATIVE Since the beginning of time, human civilisation has always settled near water especially rivers as it is a main source needed for food, cleaning, drinking and so on. Naturally, they will eventually build houses and accomodation near rivers. Hulu Langat is blessed with the nature’s gift with a wide stretch of river cutting through its land. It can be seen that some of the lcoals there has use this river to their advantage, the fertile and nutritious soil condition allows the local to have agricultural plantation to generate income for themselves. Sadly, as time goes by, the river is slowly becoming more and more underappreciated and being taken as granted with people throwing rubbish into the river, poluting it and clogging it which is one of the main reason that causes the flood. If we look at present day Hulu Langat, they do have some counter flood strategy there like raising their houses on stilts, and here I ask myself the question: why not go all out? Hulu Langat is also blessed with virigin forest with tall and sturdy trees, is there a way to harmonize the nature and human accomodation together? Why not raise the houses all the way up to have a treetop community? If it is a community we are talking about, there must be some way to connect them. If we look at the recent flood that happened in Hulu Langat, although they suffered severe losses and damages to their belongings, but one thing we can all agree on is that the locals there dont look too depressed over it, because they know they have each other to rely on which we can see them helping each other out post flood, the locals were having gotong-royong activities. Hence, it can be said that being connected as a community is what defines Hulu Langat. Since ive proposed them to living on the trees, here I ask myself can their main transportation be cable cars and flying foxes to help them stay connected even if the flood hits the village again.

CHARACTERISTICS OF UTOPIAN ARCHITECTURE KRITTIKA JAYACHANDRAN

THE WALKING CITY, RON HERRON GUY HORTON

KEYPHRASES: -illusion of perfection. -a self-sufficient, independent, cohesive plan -It prioritizes comfort and happiness over fulfilling planning guidelines and rigid structural systems -each structure acting as a transit hub

KEYPHRASES: -the idea that architecture is the act of producing functional machines -from one history to others. Work is not disappearing. It is moving.

As for inproper waste management, one of the best to solve this issue is through education. Of course when we talk about education, it shouldnt be just classroom ABC formal education, informal education must be implemented as well as it is much more effective. What if theres a way to filter the flood throughout the year, and once a year there will be this controlled flood festival with clean water that cleanses the village. At least to me, an annually event will be way more interesting and attracting if tourism is to be taken into consideration to develop here. During this event, kids can be playing in this vast pool while the elders watch over them, kayaking races that attracts tourist can happen here to further increase the income of the lcoals.

What impact could Hulu Langat have if its strength is appreciated and amplified?

The model mainly tries to give a better visual idea of a selfsustaining sky village. Utilizing the fertiled soil condition, agricultural plantation are planned along the riverbanks to generate income, adding structure integrity to the earth thus reducing impact of the flood. Movable river and air filtration machines are being implemented all along Hulu Langat’s as to act river and air cleaner and energy generator. The reason to propose a series of movable machines instead of stationary ones is to further emphasize on the concept of giving back, instead of the villagers going to the machines (the building) to seek aid, the machines goes you to provide aid and support from ground, water and air.

34

Initial selected site’s synergies

The selected site was later changed because the proposed programs and project objectives is more suitable to develop in the new selected site. The initial synergy only responded within the site, instead of within and surrounding of the site.

35

site synergies

Possible Programs. By creating a powerplant in Hulu Langat, there has to be a way where the energy can be distributed to the lcoals on a daily basis. What if Hulu Langat has its own walking machines which acts like little helpers help distributing energy around Hulu Langat. Some locals can even produce their own electricity through solar energy and even sell back to the powerplant. This ambitious proposal will require a way to maintain it, thus the rest of the programs include a research and development centre, where researchers will develop fertilisers and supplements from animal and general waste. The powerplant will also require a research and development garden where these fertilisers and supplments can be tested on livestock and plantation since agriculture is one of the source of income for the locals there. A market space is also required to sell these fertilisers and supplements to the locals to improve the quality of their products while generating income back to the powerplant. The market also allows the locals there to rent a space and sell their goods as well.

New site synergies

Implementation

By upscaling and multiplying some of these existing technologies and implementing it into the building, the powerplant will be able to produce sufficient amount of energy to power the entire Hulu Langat.

Targeted Audience

A simple zoning diagram is then produced by placing spaces are needed in the building according to the site. For example, retail/ commercial space like a market is placed on the east side of the site as it is nearer to the main road of Hulu Langat for it to be easily accessible. Spaces for research and development is placed on the north-west side of the site as it requires a certain level of privacy.

39

site synergies

An in-depth zoning/bubble diagram is then produced to properly plan out while considering the flow, the view, privacy of the building and so on. The river cleaner is placed on the north side of the proposed bridge connecting the commercial zone to the residential zone because it shows people the before and after the of the river that has been filtered and cleaned while crossing the bridge. The hydroelectric generator will be placed after the river cleaner to avoid interference while generating electricity.

Design Intentions

A massing model is then produced to study on the scale and volume of the building. Several research and studies on the technologies and building method has been carried out to further justify whether the building programs are doable or not.

44

A NEW PURPOSE ? Hulu Langat is blessed with a wide stretch of river but ironically, the village faces water and electricity shortage during flood. Is there a way to create a village that has its own ecosystem that only relies on itself, an endless self-sustaining cylce to keep the village going pre, during and post flood. We are talking about electricity that doesnt need to rely on TNB, clean water source that doesnt come from Air Selangor. What if Hulu Langat has its own off-grid powerplant, by using the river as a CATALYST this powerplant can produce its own renewable energy (hydroelectric/ natural water filtration/ solar etc...) to its own people.

The Mechs (little helpers of Hulu Langat)

The machines will first be collecting portable battery cells that is charged by a hydroelectric station and water tanks that is filled up by filtered river and rainwater. It will then distribute or sell these battery cells and water tank around Hulu Langat on a daily basis, thus the locals there don’t have to rely on TNB and airselangor to get these basic needs. This can work the other way as well, locals can charge their own power cells through solar panels and they can sell back these cells to the machines to further promote this ecosystem in Hulu Langat. The machines can also be use as helpers for some locals as well as what ive tried to show in this diagram. Income is then generated and some of it can be use for maintenance for the machines.
