Cultivate Co-Op Location: Rainier Beach, Washington Year: Fall 2023 Instructors: Peter Cohan
Cultivate Co-op is a new mixed-used residential and commercial building that will be located in the heart of Rainier Beach, on the southwest corner of the intersection of South Henderson Street and Rainier Avenue South. Cultivate Co-op will engage the community through Rainier Beach Action Coalition and other nonprofit organizations to address and enhance food-related issues and the urban environment. Rainier Beach has been identified in the City of Seattle Comprehensive Plan as an urban village center. Cultivate Co-Op will contribute to the emerging urban context by reflecting the recent land use code changes meant to encourage densification and walkability while providing additional housing. Cultivate Co-op will enhance the urban fabric of Rainier Beach by fostering community spaces, activating commercial and retail shops, and implementing green infrastructure Cultivate co-op aims to provide Rainier Beach with a building that promotes effective social spaces, but also residential and commercial spaces that can improve the livelihood of the Rainier Beach community. It utilizes urban design theories from writers such as Jane Jacobs, William Whyte, Kevin Lynch, and Aldo Rossi. Understanding the context and history that Cultivate Co-op sits among and engaging the public realm through permeability and improving the edges of the public realm. In addition, it capitalizes on the importance of food and allows it to become the driving force of the project. Food draws activity and activity leads to a vital social life enabling a building to be successful in Rainier Beach.

Urban Water Research Center Location: Seattle, Washington Year: Winter 2023 Instructors: Peter Cohan, Claire Rennhack
This research station will be one of many stations arrayed along the water’s edge from Tacoma, WA to Victoria, BC. These stations will host artists-in-residence and scientists-in-residence to live and work together for 3 to 6-month stays in order to get to know a particular place and its links to the wider waterways of the Puget Sound. The research station provides artists and scientists time, space, and equipment for this purpose. During their stay, the residents will be traveling to and from the site primarily by water. At the station, the residents will be collecting samples, crunching data, contemplating the sunrise, running experiments, arguing about models of ecology, composing poems, discussing the future, listening to the rain, and compiling reports. The station is not a public facility, but the remainder of the site will be open to the public so, although controlled access to the research station is not required, some consideration should be given to providing the scientists and artists with the relative seclusion they need in order to do their work. The research station needs to be both practical and particular, embedded in the site through the careful and evocative placement of boundaries, thresholds, processions, and volumes of space.

Othello’s Place to HELP | MEET | PLAY | LEARN Location: Seattle, Washington Year: Spring 2023 Instructors: Rick Mohler, Elizabeth Golden
Othello’s Place—is aimed at cultivating community connections through help, meet, play, learn. Nestled in the heart of Othello, between Rainier Valley and New Holly, this project site is strategically located near the Othello Link Station, which serves as the bustling urban core of this neighborhood. It enjoys proximity to key transportation hubs, including bus stops, cyclists, and pedestrians, along major corridors like Martin Luther King Jr. Way and South Othello Street. Surrounding our site is a diverse array of neighborhood typologies, encompassing mixed-use residential, medical, institutional, and commercial developments. The building’s structure embodies the design gestures employed throughout the project. Precast concrete dominates the ends of the site, imparting a sense of protection, while as one turns the corner, the warmth of wood cladding and timber frame structures takes over, creating an interior environment of visual porosity and comfort. In terms of the layout, the first floor is dedicated to essential public spaces, including the gym and gallery area, which can seamlessly expand into the corridor for larger events like farmers’ markets or dance classes organized by the Good Foot Collective. On the other hand, the second floor focuses on areas for children, such as the teen reading, game, and music rooms, designed to provide a more secluded atmosphere.
