I attended first grade at Fairmont Elementary. For all of you who are not old Emory Gappers, it was located on the hill behind where Clayton Homes is now located in Harriman. I remember my first day of school. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like it at all. In fact, I decided I wasn’t staying at school any longer and proceeded to walk out of the classroom, down the hall and down the road. I got about a third of a mile from the school, and I heard a man’s voice yell for me. It was Mr. Ladd, the principal. Now Mr. Ladd was about 10 feet tall, which made me decide I’d better stop in my tracks and wait for him to catch up with me. He sat down in the grass on the side of the road and told me to sit down beside him. He didn’t say a word as we sat there. After about five minutes, he said, “You know you have to go back, don’t you?” I looked up at him and meekly answered, “Yes”. The Town Drunk A judge grew tired of seeing the same town drunk in front of his bench. One day the judge glared down at the man, who was still intoxicated, and thundered, "It is the sentence of this court that you be taken from here to a place of execution and there hanged by the neck until DEAD." The drunk promptly fainted. The court bailiff commenced to reviving the man, and looked up at the judge, at which time the judge shrugged and responded "I've always wanted to do that."

Spider Bites:
Symptoms, Signs & Spider Bite Treatment In truth, spiders are not intentionally harmful to humans. Most spider bites occur when humans accidentally trap or brush up against a spider and receive a defensive bite. On rare occasions, spiders may have a serious lapse in judgment and bite a human finger (or other body part) mistaking it for a caterpillar or other such prey. Even then, most spiders are too small and not capable of breaking the skin with their fangs, or their venom too weak to be dangerous to humans. Simply put - most spider bites are accidental, harmless and require no specific treatment. Still, that is not enough to stop spiders from having a bad reputation. It is common for any unexplained skin irritation to be called a "spider bite." In fact, most skin lesions and bite symptoms that are attributed to spiders are rarely actually due to a spider bite. Research has shown that 80 percent of presumed spider bites are actually bites from other insects, or due to skin infections such as MRSA (a resistant staph infection). Yet, occasionally, a spider's bites will cause real harm. Spider bites may cause injury by three mechanisms. First, especially with larger spiders, the bite itself may be painful and cause injury. However, far more concerning is the spider's venom, which can include necrotic agents or neurotoxins. Spider bites rarely transmit infectious diseases. Most spider bites are less painful than a bee sting. Pain from non-venomous spider bites typically lasts for five to 60 minutes while pain from venomous spider bites frequently lasts for longer than 24 hours. The rate of a bacterial infection due to a spider bite is low (less than one percent). The two spiders of greatest concern in the U.S. are the brown recluse and the black widow spiders, most commonly found in southern states. Both species prefer warm climates and dark, dry places. Typically, these are timid, non-aggressive spiders, often found in dry, littered, undisturbed areas such as closets, woodpiles and under sinks.

Dangerous Spider Species
Black widow spiders can be found throughout North America, but are most common in the southern and western areas of the United States. Male widows, like most spider species, are much smaller and generally less dangerous than the females. Widows tend to be non-aggressive, but will bite if the web is disturbed and the spider feels threatened. The more dangerous female is a dark colored spider and with a red hourglass marking on its belly. The bite feels like a pinprick, and at first may go unnoticed or seem rather minor. Early on there may be slight swelling and faint red marks. Within a few hours, though, intense pain and stiffness begin. Other signs and spider bite symptoms include: chills, fever, muscle cramps, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Typically, black widow bites are less common, but more severe than brown recluse bites. That said, no one in the United States has died from a black widow spider bite in more than 10 years.
Brown recluse spiders
The brown recluse spider, also known as the violin spider, is most commonly found in the south-central, mid-western and southern states of the United States. Most encounters with this spider occur from moving boxes or rooting about in closets, attics, garages or under beds where they may have nested. These spiders are brown in color with a characteristic dark violin-shaped (or fiddle-shaped) marking on its head. Whereas most spiders have eight eyes, brown recluses have six equal-sized eyes. The bite produces a mild stinging, followed by local redness and intense pain within eight hours. A fluid-filled blister forms at the site and then sloughs off to leave a deep, enlarging ulcer. Systemic (or generalized) reactions from a brown recluse spider bite vary from having spider bite symptoms like a mild fever and rash to nausea and listlessness. Generally, brown recluse spider bites are reported much more frequently than black widow bites, but while the brown recluse bite may cause very significant local skin reactions, it is much more unusual for these spider bites to cause generalized symptoms. Unfortunately, brown recluses are almost communal and can be sometimes be found in great numbers. What To Do About Spider Bites • If you suspect a spider has bitten you, try to bring it with you to the doctor so they can determine the best course of treatment based on the species. • Clean the site of the spider bite well with soap and water. • Apply a cool compress over the spider bite location (using a cloth dampened with cold water or filled with ice). • If you suspect the bite is from a black widow or brown recluse spider, and the bite is on an extremity, elevate it. • Consider tying a snug bandage above the bite and elevate the limb to help slow or halt the venom's spread. Ensure that the bandage is not so tight that it cuts off circulation in your arm or leg. • Adults can take aspirin or acetaminophen and antihistamines to relieve minor signs and spider bite symptoms (use caution when giving aspirin to children or teenagers). • Seek medical attention for any severe spider bite signs and symptoms, or if signs and symptoms continue to worsen for more than 24 hours. When To Worry about Spider Bite Symptoms If a local reaction continues to get worse for more than 24 hours, it may be time to seek medical attention. Look for redness spreading away from the bite, drainage from the bite, increase in pain, numbness/tingling, or a discoloration around the bite that looks like a halo or bull's-eye. If generalized spider bite symptoms set in, be concerned. In very rare cases, there have been reports of spider bites (by spiders considered otherwise harmless) causing allergic reactions - including anaphylactic shock, a life-threatening condition (much like may result from the sting of a bee, or wasp in a highly allergic person).

Most people know John Wayne, who would have been 110 now, for his cowboy persona, but there was much more to the Duke than that famous swagger. Here are four facts that might surprise you. 1. A BODY SURFING ACCIDENT CHANGED HIS CAREER. John Wayne, surfer? Yep—and if he hadn’t spent a lot of time doing it, he may never have become the legend he did. Like many USC students, Wayne, then known as Marion Morrison, spent a good deal of his extracurricular time in the ocean. After he sustained a serious shoulder injury while body-surfing, Morrison lost his place on the football team. He also lost the football scholarship that had landed him a spot at USC in the first place. Unable to pay his fraternity for room and board, Morrison quit school and, with the help of his former football coach, found a job as the prop guy at Fox Studios in 1927. It didn’t take long for someone to realize that Morrison belonged in front of a camera; he had his first leading role in The Big Trail in 1930. 2. HE TOOK HIS NICKNAME FROM THE FAMILY POOCH. Marion Morrison had never been fond of his feminine-sounding name. He was often given a hard time about it growing up, so to combat it, he gave himself a nickname: Duke. It was his dog’s name. Morrison was so fond of his family’s Airedale Terrier when he was younger that the family took to calling the dog “Big Duke” and Marion “Little Duke,” which he quite liked. But when he was starting his Hollywood career, movie execs decided that Duke Morrison sounded like a stunt man, not a leading actor. The head of Fox Studios was a fan of Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne, so Morrison’s new surname was quickly settled. After testing out various first names for compatibility, the group decided that “John” had a nice symmetry to it, and so John Wayne was born. Still, the man himself always preferred his original nickname. “The guy you see on the screen isn’t really me,” he once said. “I’m Duke Morrison, and I never was and never will be a film personality like John Wayne.” 3. HE WAS A CHESS FANATIC. Anyone who knew John Wayne personally knew what an avid chess player he was. He often brought a miniature board with him so he could play between scenes on set. When Wayne accompanied his third wife, Pilar Pallete, while she played in amateur tennis tournaments, officials would stock a trailer with booze and a chess set for him. The star would hang a sign outside of the trailer that said, “Do you want to play chess with John Wayne?” and then happily spend the day drinking and trouncing his fans-Wayne wasn’t just a fan of chess, he was good at chess. It’s said that his favorite screenwriter played chess with the Duke for more than 20 years without winning a match. Other famous chess partners included Marlene Dietrich, Rock Hudson, and Robert Mitchum. During their match, Mitchum reportedly caught him cheating. Wayne's reply: "I was wondering when you were going to say something. Set 'em up, we'll play again." 4. HE COINED THE TERM "THE BIG C" If you say you know someone battling “The Big C” these days, everyone immediately knows what you’re referring to. But no one called it that before Wayne came up with the term, evidently seeking to make it less scary. Worried that Hollywood would stop hiring him if they knew how sick he was with lung cancer in the early ‘60s, Wayne called a press conference in his living room shortly after an operation that removed a rib and half of one lung. “They told me to withhold my cancer operation from the public because it would hurt my image,” he told reporters. “Isn’t there a good image in John Wayne beating cancer? (Rain or storm) •Rainbows in the morning? A rainbow in the west means moisture is on its way, one in the east means rain has left the area. •If there is a ring around the moon at night, snow or rain will come in the next 3 days. Smell: •If you take a deep breath and smell earth and compost, moisture is coming soon. •If your flowers smell stronger than normal, rain is on its way. Animals: •If the birds are flying high in the sky, fair weather will stay around. •If cattle seek a corner of a field or lie down in a group in the fields, a severe storm is imminent. •Cats will clean their ears before a rain. •Spiders come down from their webs before a rain. •The louder the frogs, the more the rain. •Ants will build their hills with steeper walls when rain is coming. •When dogs eat grass, rain is coming. •Bats flying around in the evening indicates fair weather. •To convert cricket chirps to degrees Fahrenheit, count number of chirps in 14 seconds then add 40 to get the temperature. A sapphire may also form in a rainbow of other colors, but red-hued corundum is known as the ruby. Many women are finding out just how much fun shooting handguns can be. But they are intimidated when they walk into gun ranges because of the way the smell, look, and are treated. This is no longer "a mans world" when it comes to handguns! Family Fun Indoor Range and Shooting for Women Alliance understand this all to well. Under their direction Women of a Different Caliber will be hosting Girls just want to have fun. This is being held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month starting in June! The time will be from 5pm - 9pm. Range fee will be $5 per girl (ages 12 and up). Your first target is free. Additional targets are $1 each. Girls can also get a 1 hour private lesson for a $50 donation. Pre registration is required for private lessons. This is a great time for your ladies groups, co-workers, mom and daughter fun, or simply with your besties. There will be a safety course for those 12 to16 years of age so be sure to arrange your times now. This is ladies only...no men allowed! But do not worry guys...we got you covered. Love Your Daughter: Kay Andrew Eckert again selected in Best of Tennessee Craft Exhibit In an exhibition held every two years,Tennessee Craft (Tennessee Association of Craft Artists - TACA) has announced those artisans who works were judged worthy of this event. Sharron Eckert’s piece made of long leaf pine needles coiled and sewn with raffia thread, was one of those items selected for the exhibit. The 2016 Exhibit displays 58 works from only 40 fine craft artists. The juror was Jerry Jackson, deputy director at Penland School of Crafts. This is the second time a piece designed by Sharron Eckert has been selected for Best of Tennessee Craft Exhibit; her piece “Free Form” was selected in 2010. The purpose of the event, as stated in the Tennessee Craft TACA literature, is “to encourage and promote a high standard of excellence and design among Tennessee craft artists and provide public visibility and recognition for the quality and diversity of craft found in Tennessee.” The exhibit will be open to the public between August 22 and December 2, at the Reece Museum on the campus of East Tennessee State University ETSU, 325 Treasure Lane, Johnson City, Tennessee 37614. to church. Alarmed by the old fellow’s absence after so many years of faithful attendance the pastor went to see him. He found him in excellent health, so the pastor asked, “How come after all these years we don’t see you at services anymore?” The old man looked around and lowered his voice. I’ll tell you, Pastor,” he whispered. “When I got to be 90 I expected God to take me any day. But then I got to be 95, then 100, then 105. So I figured that God is very busy and must have forgotten about me…..and I don’t want to remind Him.” All four churches in the small town had a serious problem with squirrel infestation. The Presbyterians decided that it was predestined that squirrels be in the church and that they would just have to live with them. The Methodists decided they should deal with the squirrels lovingly in the style of Charles Wesley. They humanely trapped them and released them in a park at the edge of town. Within 3 days, they were all back in the church. The Catholics also humanely trapped them and attempted to teach them the “rhythm” method which of course did not work. The Lutherans had the best solution. They confirmed the squirrels, and now they see the animals only at Christmas and Easter.

Most dogs want to socialize with members of their own species, otherwise they are living through a form of solitary confinement. Sure, dogs love human companionship, but every now and then they just want to hang out with someone who speaks their own (body) language. But allowing dogs to get together isn’t without risk. Canine miscommunication, running into the “wrong” dog, and plain old bad luck may all lead to a dog fight. Knowing what to do before, during, and after dog fight is the best way to minimize injuries. Prevention is the Best Defense Of course preventing a dog fight is a far better option than dealing with it once it has begun. While you can’t control how other owners handle their dogs, you are in charge or your own dog’s training and management. 1. Keep an eye on the situation. When your dog is interacting with or simply in the vicinity of other dogs, pay attention to the group dynamic. Now is not the time to get so engrossed in your phone, book, or conversation that you don’t notice when tensions are starting to rise. Normal, happy dog play often involves a lot of growling and wrestling so it can be difficult to determine when a problem is developing. Signs to watch out for that indicate a dog fight could be imminent include: •Raised hackles •A stiff tail or body posture •A deeper, more guttural tone to growling or barking •Snarling that shows a lot of teeth •Snapping •A dog who is trying to get away but is not being allowed to do so 2. Practice basic obedience. If you start to see signs of stress in your dog or other dogs in the group, call your dog to your side and reward him for coming. Tell him to sit and stay until he and the overall situation appear more relaxed. Work on obedience training on a regular basis, and always praise and reward good behavior. Your goal is to have complete confidence that no matter what is going on around him, your dog will immediately obey your command. 3. Know your dog’s weaknesses and triggers. Some dogs are well behaved under most circumstances but have certain triggers that bring out the worst in them. For example, your dog might love to play with her house-mate but can get aggressive when she feels her food is in danger of being taken away. The safest way to deal with situations like these is to avoid them. These two dogs should never be in the same area when food or treats are available. When a Dog Fight Happens Anyway If despite your best efforts at prevention your dog does get into fight, keep in mind that your primary objective is to prevent significant injuries… to the dogs and to the people who are involved. 1. Don’t panic. Many so-called dog fights are really just spats that consist of a lot of noise and posturing but which are over within seconds. If the dogs quickly separate on their own, approach your dog quietly and calmly, attach your leash, and leave the area. 2. Distract the dogs. Is there a bowl or bucket of water or, better yet, a hose nearby? Thoroughly dousing the dogs, preferably in the face, will often get their minds off of fighting. Citronella or pepper spray can also be used. Some owners carry canisters with them for occasions just like this, but be aware that they can be quite irritating to innocent bystanders who are downwind. Loud noises will also sometimes work. Try honking a nearby car horn, blowing an air horn if one is available, banging on metal trash cans, etc. 3. Physically separate the dogs. If the dogs can’t be distracted, try to find something you can put in between them. A board, large branch, cane, umbrella (quickly open it to startle the dogs), piece of plywood, chair, blanket… anything that is on hand and sturdy enough to prevent the dogs from biting one another (or you) could work or try spraying a water hose. As a last resort, you can try grabbing your dog’s thighs, lifting him into a wheelbarrow position, and pulling him backwards, but this does involve some risk that you might be bitten. Never reach for your dog’s collar or head as this is the surest way to get injured during a dog fight. After the Fight: Check Your Dog for Injuries Once the fight is over you still need to be very careful around the dogs. Burning Building
(As told by the great Jerry Clower) I grow'd up at Route 4, Liberty, Mississippi. (Miss-sip-peh) The country seat town was a small town: Volunteer fire department. It was in the middle of the summer, big drought, no water, everybody knew if a building caught on fire (f-ah-re) it 'as gone. Cause there wasn't no water, they just couldn't draw it up fast enough to put out no fire. One Saturday evenin' a building caught on fire. Commenced to burnin'. The crowd gathered with their arms folded. Squallin'. Watching the building burn, cause there ain't no water. Bout that time here come Uncle Vercy Ledbetter and Aunt (ain't) Pet in their ol' truck. Had all of the youngin's with 'um: Ardel, Burnel, Raynel, W.L. (dub-yell), Lanel, Odell, Eudel, Marcel, Claude, Newgene, and Clovis. They 's all hangin' on that ol' truck. Waaagh! Everybody heard 'um comin', the fenders rattlin': [sounds of flopping fender: blopgablopgablopgablopgablopga]! Here they come! An' the crowd parted cause they 'as comin' pretty fast. An' they run right up on the sidewalk, an right up in the middle of the fire. Into the fire! An' they jumped off and took off their overhaul jumpers an went to floppin' and stompin' the fire: whalm! Puttin' it out. Aunt Pet Ledbetter had her bonnet, tellin 'um "'ho stomp over here, (he-y-ah) get (geet) it out!" whomp whomp! And they stomped the fire out! They put it slap out! The folks cheered, "Haaawg! The Ledbetter's, they're heroes! (h-E-rows) They put out the fire." They passed a hat, took up a collection, took up 31 dollars. Give the money to Uncle Vercy, and said "Sir, we love you, you are a hero." Said, "Tell us, what are you going to buy with the 31 dollars?" He said "The first thing I'm gonna do is get the brakes fixed on that truck!"

2. Use kitty litter mixed with baking soda in a pan to neutralize musty or bad odors. 3. If the tip of your shoe lace becomes frayed snip off the frayed end. Then paint or dip the end of the shoe lace into clear nail polish and let it dry. Good as new. 4. If your new shoes are to tight put the nozzle of your blow dryer into shoe and turn on low. When shoe gets warm, stuff with paper or socks to stretch it. 5. Spray wd40 on a cloth and wipe over leather shoes or leather boots, then buff with a soft clean cloth to shine and make them waterproof. 6. To make nail polish stay on nails longer first coat fingernails with white vinegar using a cotton ball. Let dry then apply nail polish. To quickly dry nail polish dip fingers into a bowl of cold water. Then shake access water from hands and allow hands to air dry. 7. Shaving your legs with hair conditioner instead of soap makes them soft and smooth. Just apply, shave, and rinse. 8. A little olive oil and enough sugar to make a paste make a nice facial scrub. Gently massage onto face avoiding eye area then rinse with warm water. This can also be used on hands.

Grilled Reuben Sandwiches
8 slices rye bread 8 slices swiss cheese 3⁄4 cup thousand island dressing 8 slices corned beef 1 (16 ounce) can sauerkraut, drained buttered flavored Pam cooking spray Spread each slice of bread with thousand island dressing. Top 4 of the bread slices with sauerkraut, cheese and corned beef. Place remaining bread slices on sandwich. Spray butter flavored Pam on the outsides of each sandwich. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Grill until browned, then turn and grill until heated through, and cheese is melted.
Queso Blanco Dip
1 1/4 lb block White American 1/4 cup diced green chiles Cheese - cut into 1-inch cubes 2 pickled jalapeños, chopped 2/3 cup whole milk 1 ounce pickled jalapeño juice 1/2 cup cold water pinch of cumin (optional) Stir together the cheese cubes, milk and water into a large microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 5 minutes, stopping to stir after every minute. In a small bowl, mix the sour cream and taco seasoning; set aside. 12. Before storing clothes that have been dry cleaned, remove them In the bottom of a 9x13-inch dish or a large serving platter, evenly spread the refried beans. Top with an even layer of the sour cream mixture then spread the guacamole over top. Sprinkle with the cheese from the plastic bag, as the bag may cause clothes to yellow. and top with the tomatoes, black olives and green onions. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate. 1 large red onion, peeled and very thinly 1 1/2 tablespoons salt sliced (i like to use my mandolin) 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 1/2 cups low-fat buttermilk 1/2 - 1 teaspoon cayenne (optional) 2 1/2 cups flour canola oil for frying 1 1/2 tablespoons garlic powder additional salt Preheat oil in a deep pot (or fryer if you have one) to 350°. Add onions and buttermilk to a large bowl and toss until combined. In a second bowl, mix together flour, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne. In small batches, take the buttermilk coated onions and dredge in the seasoned flour (shaking to remove excess), and fry for 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 minutes on each side (or until golden). Place on a paper towel line platter and sprinkle with a tiny bit of salt. Repeat until all onions are golden and crisp.

Get Rid Of Odors
Dishwasher A dishwasher can be cleaned with household vinegar or citric acid powder. Pour a gallon of vinegar in the bottom, let set for an hour or so, then run the washer through a full cycle. Citric acid powder will also help remove hard-water buildup. Add a half-cup of powder and run the dishwasher. If there’s still an unpleasant odor coming from inside, examine the drain hose to see if it’s crimped and check the bottom for bits of food or gunk. After checking, if the odor it still strong, call a plumber because it might be a possible hazardous plumbing problem, like sewer gas, that needs to be remedied. Mothball This strong odor, in furniture or clothing, can be taken care of with a lot of air circulation. If it’s in clothing, hang garments outside in fresh air to let the smell dissipate. Wash garments alone with washing soda or baking soda, added to the regular amount of detergent. If the odor is inside a chest of drawers or a cedar chest, you must air out the drawers too and then lightly sand the inside and vacuum up the shavings. Stuff the drawers with newspapers to help absorb the odors. Wipe the inside with a cloth lightly dampened with household vinegar and let air-dry. Smoke If clothing smells smoky, put it out in the fresh air. Many fabric-odor sprays do a good job, particularly on winter coats and heavy sweaters. Of course, normal laundering can remove the odor. But if there has been a fire, and the smoke smell is awful, locate a dry cleaner that has an ozone cleaner and that should do the trick. Foot/Shoe As long as foot odor is not a medical condition, try these hints: Wash your feet and dry them thoroughly. Spritz feet with deodorant before putting on socks. Apply antibacterial soap or soak your feet in vinegar for five minutes every night to help. Airing out shoes in between wearing, and pouring a bit baking soda inside, will help neutralize odors.

If gold = $1,400...Silver should = $87, but today silver is about $20. Based on the historical ratio, with the price of gold around $1,300, the price of silver should be around $80. Today, silver is trading around $20. Today, gold is selling for more than 65-times the price of silver. What explains the difference between hundreds of years of history and today? Why is silver still so inexpensive relative to gold? When silver is "demonetized," as it is now (meaning it's not being used for money, but just for jewelry and industrial purposes), people sell silver for gold and other currencies. Supplies soar. On the other hand, during periods of monetary crisis, demand for silver as money pushes the silver ratio heavily in the silver investor's favor. We've already seen this begin to happen to silver in 2016. The silver-to-gold ratio peaked at 80 late last year, and now rests around 65. In situations like we are experiencing today however, it has continued to go much lower. For example, the ratio returned to its historic range (16) during World War I. It happened again in the early 1970s, while I was working on Wall Street, Nixon abandoned the gold standard. It also happened most famously in 1979-1980, when it seemed as if America was really entering a serious money crisis. Most people don't know this, but silver was actually the best-performing asset following the financial crisis... not gold. Useless Studies By People Who Have Little To Do #1: Redheads Feel More Pain Dr. Daniel Sessler of the University of Louisville and his colleagues recently administered electric shocks to ten volunteer redheads and ten volunteer brunettes, along with a measurable numbing anesthetic. They discovered that to lower the pain to a certain measurable level, the redheads required a 20 percent greater dose of the anesthetic. (For reasons not disclosed by the university, blondes were not included in this research project.) #2: How Best to Skip a Stone After exhaustive testing at a local pond, researchers from the Tohoku University Department of Physics in Japan have determined that the best way to skip a stone across water (i.e., get more skips per throw) is for the thrower to tilt the stone precisely 20 degrees to the lake’s surface. (This confirmed the results of French experiments conducted a few years ago.) Directly afterward, it was found that those whose noses had been sprayed with oxytocin were far more trusting and willing to give away their money than they were before the spraying and also far more trusting and willing to give away their money than those sprayed with the placebo. #6: Beware of a Man’s Index Finger After measuring the fingers of 298 men and women, researchers at the University of Alberta, Canada, concluded that the shorter a man’s index finger as compared to his ring finger, the more physically aggressive he is likely to be. (Female finger-length ratios showed no correlation with any of the measures used.)

Here are some hints to avoid the embarrassment of yawning when you’re around someone. Forcing Your Mouth Shut Force your mouth shut, while still yawning. (clenching your teeth, or any way you can.) If your tongue curls, let it curl. Your nose may expand for the length of the yawn, and this will help. The yawn should pass within a few seconds. Rubbing Your Nose With light pressure, slowly rub upward your nose or forehead. This method works for some, and was used by the samurai in ancient Japan, since yawning was considered offensive. Exhaling When you feel you are going to yawn, instead of breathing in, begin to exhale deeply until the urge has passed or you are out of breath. Pushing Your Throat Push gently but firmly in an upward direction on your throat, right above your Adam's Apple, or right where your chin meets your neck.

There’s Angels Among Us When angels help us through life, sometimes they do so in ways that may not be immediately recognizable to us. They often deliver answers, hints, messages, and warnings through signs--signals, or anomalies in life, which let us know that they're with us. There are two steps to experiencing signs from above: (1) believe in them, and (2) notice them. Amazing life transformations occur when we learn to see and use the messages the angels give us in everyday life, in all situations, big or small. Clouds - They are heavenly bodies of moisture, hovering above us like protective angels as they float around our world. Angels love to use these natural wonders to show us signs because they can be shaped in any fashion and are spectacular to look at. Clouds are one of the most common ways that we receive “I love you” messages from Heaven. The angels' clouds are physical signs that they’re with us around the clock. Feathers - These may be the ultimate angelic sign. Although feathers come in all different sizes and colors, they're amazing signs because they're directly connected with the thought, prayer, or question that you had in mind. Rarely will you find one left by the angels without knowing what it means. Either you’ll come across it while thinking about something or you'll immediately sense the association upon finding it. The angels will bring you feathers and other signs in a way tailor-made to your own level of faith.

Music - The angels often send their messages through the sound and power of music. It seems that almost everywhere we go, silence is replaced with music in one form or another. Pay attention, as recurring songs (or a series of songs sharing a theme) are almost always a sign from above. In addition to offering a connection to Heaven, music delivers very direct messages and signs. For instance, the title or lyrics of a song that you hear repetitively offers a chance to receive specific guidance from your angels. Pennies - Coins, or currency in general, are often used by the angels to show us messages or give us guidance. All aspects of this type of sign have specific relevance to you and your path, including the time and place you find the coin, its denominations, the message written on it, and the material it's made. The next time you find a coin on the ground, know that it was purposely placed in your path. The gift of a coin helps us feel supported--financially, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Rainbows - Since the time of Noah's ark, rainbows have been symbolic of God's promise of love, care, support, and protection. When you ask the angels for a sign and you see a rainbow, it signals that your entire situation is being taken care of by them. Albino rainbows, double rainbows, and moonbows (rainbows appearing at night under the moonlight) are all so unusual that they leave no doubt as to their significance. Rainbows are not only signs, but also gifts of encouragement and guidance from the other side.

911 - Just So We Won’t Forget

September 11, 2001, was the deadliest day in history for New York City firefighters: 343 were killed. The attacker were blamed on Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia and several other Arab nations. Reportedly financed by Saudi fugitive Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda terrorist organization, they were allegedly acting in retaliation for America’s support of Israel, its involvement in the Persian Gulf War and its continued military presence in the Middle East. Some of the terrorists had lived in the United States for more than a year and had taken flying lessons at commercial flight schools. Others had slipped into the country in the months before Sept. 11 and acted as the “muscle” in the operation. The 19 terrorists easily smuggled box-cutters and knives through security at three East Coast airports and boarded four flights bound for California, chosen because the planes were loaded with fuel. Soon after takeoff, the terrorists commandeered the four planes and took the controls, transforming ordinary commuter jets into guided missiles. As millions watched the events unfolding in New York, American Airlines Flight 77 circled over downtown Washington, D.C., and slammed into the west side of the Pentagon military headquarters at 9:45 a.m. Jet fuel from the Boeing 757 caused a devastating inferno that led to the structural collapse of a portion of the giant concrete building. All told, 125 military personnel and civilians were killed in the Pentagon, along with all 64 people aboard the airliner. Less than 15 minutes after the terrorists struck the nerve center of the U.S. military, the horror in New York took a catastrophic turn for the worse when the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed in a massive cloud of dust and smoke. The structural steel of the skyscraper, built to withstand winds in excess of 200 miles per hour and a large conventional fire, could not withstand the tremendous heat generated by the burning jet fuel. At 10:30 a.m., the other Trade Center tower collapsed. Close to 3,000 people died in the World Trade Center and its vicinity, including a staggering 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York City police officers and 37 Port Authority police officers who were struggling to complete an evacuation of the buildings and save the office workers trapped on higher floors. Only six people in the World Trade Center towers at the time of their collapse survived. Almost 10,000 others were treated for injuries, many severe. Meanwhile, a fourth California-bound plane–United Flight 93–was hijacked about 40 minutes after leaving Newark International Airport in New Jersey. Because the plane had been delayed in taking off, passengers on board learned of events in New York and Washington via cell phone and Airfone calls to the ground. Knowing that the aircraft was not returning to an airport as the hijackers claimed, a group of passengers and flight attendants planned an insurrection. One of the passengers, Thomas Burnett Jr., told his wife over the phone that “I know we’re all going to die. There’s three of us who are going to do something about it. I love you, honey.” Another passenger–Todd Beamer–was heard saying “Are you guys ready? Let’s roll” over an open line. Sandy Bradshaw, a flight attendant, called her husband and explained that she had slipped into a galley and was filling pitchers with boiling water. Her last words to him were “Everyone’s running to first class. I’ve got to go. Bye.” The passengers fought the four hijackers and are suspected to have attacked the cockpit with a fire extinguisher. The plane then flipped over and sped toward the ground at upwards of 500 miles per hour, crashing in a rural field in western Pennsylvania at 10:10 a.m. All 45 people aboard were killed. On any given workday, up to 50,000 employees worked in the WTC twin towers, and an additional 40,000 passed through the complex. 3. After the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, the rescue and recovery clean-up of the 1.8 million tons of wreckage from the WTC site took 9 months. 4. In 2001, New York City fire evacuation procedures only required mandatory evacuations for floors immediately surrounding a fire. After a plane struck Building 1 of the WTC, Building 2 employees were initially told to stay in the building. 5. 18 people were rescued alive from the rubble of the World Trade Center site.

I called Bill Tracy this morning. He said he sent out the missing person report to every police department in the state, but so far Brad has not been seen.” “I think you should take some time off. Take the week off. I’ll pay you your normal salary.” “Thank you Mr. White. I really appreciate it.” Kate didn’t want to work, but she didn’t want to go home to an empty apartment either. In the end she decided to go back to the apartment in case Brad came back.

Kayden Christopher is at home, but must visit the St. Judes affiliate in Johnson City monthly, and St. Judes in Memphis every three months. He is receiving his chemo orally and is presently doing good. The latest MRI shows the tumor has shrunk even more. The tumor is still inoperable, and he has lost some of his hearing because of the chemo. He will receive his hearing aides in October. If the water or soda in the container has a plastic taste or smell, then the plastic has begun to degrade, and the container should be recycled. Ultraviolet light from the sun, excessive heat, and pressure can speed up the degradation process.

I was the first person in Roane County and from my Endocrinologist's office to be considered for an islet cell transplant for type 1 diabetes. I found out on 8-19 after I had called Diabetes Research Institute in Miami, Fl. that I did not qualify because I took Plavix. The place had done a 43 year old female from Texas 6 months ago and after it was over with she came out diabetes free. The FDA has approved the place to do 6 to 8 more patients for research and if they come out diabetes free then all doctors will be doing this procedure. The Liberty Bell In 1751, the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly—part of the state’s colonial government—paid around 100 pounds for a large bell to hang in its new State House (later known as Independence Hall). Cast at London’s Whitechapel Bell Foundry, the bell arrived in Philadelphia in August 1752. Because the metal was too brittle, it cracked during a test strike and had to be recast twice. The final version—made of 70 percent copper, 25 percent tin and small amounts of lead, zinc, arsenic, gold and silver—weighed around 2,080 pounds and measured 12 feet in circumference around the lip and 3 feet from lip to crown. On July 8, 1776, the bell was rung to celebrate the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. After the British invasion of Philadelphia, the bell was hidden in a church until it could be safely returned to the State House. A popular icon of the new nation and its independence, it wasn’t called the “Liberty Bell” until the 1830s, when an abolitionist group adopted it as a symbol of their own cause. So when did the Liberty Bell get its famous crack? That’s not exactly clear. According to one of many stories, it first cracked back in 1824, during the visit of the Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette. Another story holds that it fractured later that year, while tolling to signal a fire. One of the most popular legends claims that the bell cracked during the funeral of Chief Justice John Marshall in 1835, but newspaper accounts of the funeral do not mention such an incident. Whatever the truth is, it seems the bell was certainly damaged by 1846, when (according to official city records) Philadelphia’s mayor requested that the bell be rung on George Washington’s birthday. Though attempts were made to repair an existing fracture in the bell for the occasion, and the bell reportedly tolled loud and clear at first, it subsequently cracked beyond repair and had to be taken out of service. After being moved to a pavilion near Independence Hall in 1976 (the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence), in 2003 the Liberty Bell was relocated to Liberty Bell Center in Independence National Historic Park, where millions of visitors view its famous crack each year.

Ever Wonder How Paper is Made?
You gotta have fiber! Over the centuries, paper has been made from a wide variety of materials -- wood pulp, rice, water plants, cotton, even old clothes! But no matter what you use to make paper -- you need "fiber." Today's paper fiber comes mainly from two sources -- pulpwood logs and recycled paper products. In fact, much of the paper we use every day is a blend of new and recycled fiber. From log to pulp. Much of the paper produced in Idaho is made from "waste" -- the tree parts from logging and sawmill operations that can't be made into lumber. After harvesting, trees are cut into logs and are transported to the mill. At the mill, a debarker removes the bark from each log. The log is cut into boards of varying sizes. The wood that's left over is then converted into wood chips, about the size of corn flakes (though not as tasty in milk!). The wood chips are then put into "pulp digesters" where they are broken down by steam and chemicals into a gloppy pudding of cellulose fibers and other wood components. In another process, the chemicals, wood resins, and wood lignin (sort of a natural glue in the wood) are removed. The cellulose fibers are cleaned and screened many times to get them ready to be made into paper. From pulp to paper. The paper pulp (from wood chips, recycled paper, or both) is fed into the paper-making machine. A pump sprays a thin layer of the liquid paper pulp onto a moving wire screen. This screen can be up to 20 feet wide, and can travel at speeds of 60 miles per hour. That's fast paper! As the pulp is carried along by the screen, the water in it drops away, and the cellulose fibers become matted together, forming paper. While the paper is still damp, it is fed through a series of heated rollers which press it and dry it. The paper is then spooled into huge rolls, cut into various sizes, and converted into paper products.

10 Things Only a Salesperson Would Understand Sales is a profession unlike any other. It’s the front line for all businesses across the world and keeps the economy humming along. There are close to 14 million salespeople in the United States, and they all have a lot in common. Spiro was designed to help salespeople close more deals because all salespeople want to make more money. Here are ten other things that only a salesperson would understand: 1. The end of the month There is nothing quite like the end of the month (or the end of the quarter) while working in sales. Not only is everyone going crazy trying to get as many deals in before deadline, but miracles can happen and complicated or difficult deals that never would have been done get closed. Everyone wants to get paid, so management pushes salespeople, and salespeople push their customers and make things happen while everyone goes just a little bit insane. 2. Bad leads Some leads are just awful. In fact, there are many people who would argue that the vast majority of leads are really bad and there is only a small percentage that are actually effective. Obviously, there are many salespeople who don’t even get leads and have to generate their own business, but even they know what a horrible lead is. Disconnected phone numbers, unqualified customers, people who have no need for the product, people who scream at you to never call them again or ask how you managed to get their phone number. Sometimes the famous sales phrase “The leads are weak,” is 100% true. 3. The thrill of closing a deal There are very few things in life that can be as exhilarating as closing a deal, especially when it’s a big or important one. Sales is full of ups and downs and the highs can feel absolutely incredible. Any experienced sales rep knows that a bad day can turn into an incredible one with just one deal. One of the biggest differences between a salaried job and a sales job is the opportunity to experience the direct rush of sales success. 4. Being in a slump A sales slump is awful because not only do you feel off your game and have a hard time keeping a positive attitude while going through failure after failure, but you’re also faced with the terrifying prospect of not getting paid, or worse, losing your job. Some managers can make a slump even worse, especially if they have a bad management style. Everyone has their own methods to get out of a slump, and Spiro can help you get out of one by recommending which actions to take, but even the absolute best salespeople in the world will go through a slump at some point in their careers. 5. Resilience Psychological resilience is defined as an individual’s ability to properly adapt to stress and adversity. What most people don’t quite understand about sales is just how many times you have to hear a “no” before you get to hear a “yes.” Only the truly resilient will excel in sales, and only those who can brush off rejection and push through it will live extraordinary lives that their friends could only dream of. Shark Tank star and real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran once said that the difference between salespeople making $40,000 a year and those making $8 million a year is how long they spend feeling sorry for themselves after a failure. 6. Changes to the comp plan Salespeople are one of the only professions who have to experiences changes to the way they get paid multiple times a year. Compensation plans get changed by upper management regularly, and it’s not usually to the benefit of the sales staff. Everyone’s been through it; management calls you in and tells you that the changes will help you make more money, and you and your co-workers grumble about how they keep changing it and paying you less and less. The only thing that’s guaranteed about your pay plan when you work in sales is that it will always keep changing. 7. Going from hero to zero In sales, the phrase “what have you done for me lately?” signifies the fact that you’re only as good as your last deal. As soon as your month or quarter ends, you’re back to the bottom of the board along with everyone else. The most successful sales reps find their way to the top of the board time and time again, while everyone else fights their way through, but everyone starts out the same when the clock strikes midnight. 8. Empty promises There is no one who is more skeptical of what people tell them than a seasoned salesperson. Usually when a salesperson is new to the job and a customer tells them that they are going to move forward with the purchase and will call them back tomorrow and get everything started, the salesperson gets excited because he or she believes them. But after a few months on the job, they know better. Customers constantly make promises that they don’t intend to keep, and any seasoned salesperson has learned to never count on a customer to get back to them, no matter how convincing they are. 9. Distrust Unfortunately, being distrusted is something that just comes with the territory in sales. The general public tends to paint salespeople with a broad brush thanks to the actions of a select few that give the rest of us a bad name. But don’t let it get you down, just understand that it’s a reflexive reaction that you need to do a little bit of work to overcome. Be direct, listen to your customers, and do what you say you’re going to do and you’ll earn their trust. 10. Staying motivated Unlike a salaried job, in sales if you don’t close, you don’t eat. This means that no matter what problems you have going on in your personal life, you absolutely have to stay energized and motivated if you want to succeed. Everyone has their own ways to stay motivated. Some people drink a ton of coffee, some people have pictures of their goals or families for motivation, and some are driven by that chip on their shoulder that only they can see. The fact is that our original American values are not what these folks represent. You see, the original American values, were based on a Judeo-Christian foundation. That foundation recognized God as the ruler of the universe, and His word, the Word Of God, the way we are to live by. Our founding fathers deeply believed in God and wanted to practice their Christian beliefs freely without interference from the newly formed federal government. The “Freedom of Religion” clause did not mean religions who worshiped idols were allowed in their respective states. They knew God called those man-made things “devils”, and that God, except for remnants, had almost destroyed Israel several times because they abandoned him and worshiped idols. So what are now these things they call “our American values”, and how depraved and ungodly are they? Very!! By many reports, their cohorts are apparently trying to cleanse our military of Christians. And they call others bigots? Can you imagine our future military not able to call on God for help because they are not allowed to pray? Because it may offend somebody? During the eight days that the party conventions took place approximately 24,000 small unborn humans being were deprived of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” For those who don’t remember, “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” were precious American values. Now the Democratic Party values the life of the murderer rather than the unborn human baby. They want to ban the execution of murderers, but support the murder of innocent unborn babies. And you vote for them!! May God have mercy on your soul and America. This is what happens when the Legislative Branch fails to do their job. When one branch goes against God’s laws you are to hold them accountable just like you are to hold your own members accountable. When justices go against God’s Laws they are not “holding their offices in good behavior.” Impeach those judges who vote against God’s Law. Immediately, because of God’s Law (Thou shall not kill), pass a bill banning the killing of unborn babies. If the President vetoes the bill, impeach him. Show the guts to stand on God’s Word. Children and pets are instinctively terrified when thunderstorms strike with their loud booms and flashes of blinding light. Their terror isn’t without merit; roughly 300 people are injured or killed by lightning each year. Although the odds of being hit by lightning in your lifetime are only about one in 12,000, taking precautions can greatly reduce your chances. Head Indoors Getting out of the storm is the best way to protect yourself from being struck. Steel-frame buildings such as high-rises or shopping centers offer the best protection. They ground the electricity of lightning safely with no adverse effects to building occupants. Bus stop shelters, sheds, outbuildings, and houses offer no protection from lighting. If they get struck while you’re in them, you could be at risk. Remain In Your Home Your home is another good choice for shelter as long as you’re inside, not on the porch watching the storm. If your home gets struck, the electrical charge will try to find its way to the ground through electricity-conducting materials such as wiring and plumbing. Avoid using electronics that plug into a wall, such as your tv, landline or computer. Cellphones and wireless devices are safe to use. Delay doing dishes or getting a bath until the storm has passed. If your home has concrete floors or walls, avoid contact with them as the metal re-bar and wiring inside can contain a bolt’s energy. Safety on the Road If you’re unable to get inside a grounded building, a hard-top vehicle provides the next best source of shelter. Roll up all the windows and avoid touching anything metal or electrical. Pull over and shut your engine off. Take your hands off the steering wheel and your foot off the pedals, and don’t rest your arm on the window ledge. If lightning strikes your vehicle, metal and electrical components can deliver a potentially fatal shock if you’re touching them. Prepare to exit the vehicle quickly if you smell gas or smoke after it’s been struck. Lightning can trigger a fire or explosion. Avoid taking shelter in a golf cart, convertible or other open vehicle as they offer no lightning protection. What to Do When You’re Stuck Outside There is no safe place outside during a lightning storm, so check the weather forecast before heading out and plan to return before storms blow in. If you’re caught in a storm, head away from the most dangerous areas, such as open mountain ridges and bodies of water. If you’re with other people, spread out at least 20 feet apart. This minimizes the chances of the entire group being struck, leaving someone to call for help and perform first aid. If lightning is imminent, put your feet together, squat down and grab your ankles. This minimizes your contact with the ground and makes you the smallest possible target.

Other Uses for Baby Powder A little baby powder can help your untangle the chain of a necklace a lot easier. Use baby powder to make a homemade dry shampoo to keep your hair grease-free in between washings. Dust your eyelashes with a tiny amount of baby powder before applying mascara. Doing this will make them look fuller. (Keep your eyes closed!) Face powders can get really expensive. Instead use a cosmetic brush to dust baby powder onto your face to set your make-up (try to find odor-free powder). After a shower, completely dry off and spread some baby powder over your skin to make it smooth and soft. Waxing can be really painful. Reduce this by rubbing baby powder over the area that will be waxed. Body oils and other moisture will be absorbed so the wax sticks to your hair and not the skin. On cool days where the physical activity is a minimum, try using baby powder instead of deodorant. It does the job and is way cheaper. Get rid of ants the natural way by sprinkling baby powder on the ant trail. You can also sprinkle some around your picnic blanket to avoid getting ants in the first place.

Wasp Spray vs. Pepper Spray I know some of you own GUNS, but this is something to think about... If you don't have a gun, here's a more humane way to wreck someone's evil plans for you. Wasp Spray - A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection. On the heels of a break-in and a beating that left an elderly woman in Toledo dead, self defense experts have a tip that could save your life. Val Glinka teaches self-defense to students at Sylvania Southview High School. For decades, he's suggested putting a can of wasp and hornet spray near your door or bed. Glinka says, "This is better than anything I can teach them." Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than mace or pepper spray. The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if someone tries to break into your home, Glinka says "spray the culprit in the eyes". It's a tip he's given to students for decades. It's also one he wants everyone to hear. If you're looking for protection, Glinka says look to the spray. "That's going to give you a chance to call the police; maybe get out." Maybe even save a life.

The sounds of squealing and feet pounding back and forth across the deck assaulted Jonathan’s ears as he sat at the desk in his bedroom. His head was pounding, and he couldn’t seem to concentrate on the sermon he was working on. He had asked Luke and Jacob to stop running on the back deck twice already. He massaged his temple with his left hand, as he scribbled notes in the margin of a sermon outline he had written in seminary. He didn’t like recycling sermons, but he had never preached this sermon in Little River. At the sound of a loud crash, Jonathan shoved back his desk chair and stalked over to the window on the outside wall of his bedroom. Sliding the window up, he called through the screen, “I told you boys to settle down! What are you doing?” “Luke did it!” Jacob said quickly, his eyes wide. “It was an accident.” Luke shrugged. A large planter was knocked over, dirt spilled out around it, and one of the long stalks of the plant was bent in the middle. “An accident that would have never happened if you had got off the deck like I told you to.” Jonathan reached up and massaged his forehead. His headache was getting worse. “Fix the plant, and get off the deck. Go play in the yard.” “Fine,” Luke grumbled. “And lose the attitude!” Jonathan barked, as he pulled the window down and returned to his desk chair. Reaching into the desk drawer, he retrieved a bottle of aspirin. He tossed three white tablets into his mouth, and washed them down with the tepid water still sitting on his desk from the day before. As he thumbed through his Bible looking for a particular passage, Abigail came in the room, and shut the door behind her. Jonathan looked up when he heard her turn the lock. Abigail’s face was pale, and her hands trembled as she sat on the bed near her husband. “We need to talk.” “What’s wrong?” Jonathan wasn’t used to seeing his wife look so stricken. Not much got to Abigail. “Emma.” “Emma?” Jonathan echoed. “What’s wrong with Emma.” “She was crying yesterday, and I meant to check on her.” Abigail rocked slightly, causing the bed to creak. “I got distracted because of the stuff with Luke and Caleb. I was worried about Titus. I just completely forgot about Emma. I feel so terrible. Livvie told me she was crying, and I didn’t even check on her.” “It’s okay.” Jonathan tried to keep the impatience from his voice, as well as the irritation he felt at the bed creaking. His head felt like it was going to explode. “You meant to check on her.” “I went to put her clothes away a few minutes ago. I thought she was outside with the other kids. She was sitting on her bedroom floor, just staring at the wall.” “Abby, just get to the point. What’s wrong with her?” “She didn’t want to tell me,” Abigail looked at her husband with tear-filled eyes, “but I finally got it out of her.” “What?” “Carly’s uncle touched her.” Jonathan’s heart clenched inside his chest, and he felt the blood drain from his face. “What do you mean he touched her? What happened?” Tears were slipping down Abigail’s face. “When she went to Carly’s house last Sunday. Emma said she was in the kitchen, getting a snack. She said he came up behind her and stood right against her. She said he put his hand on her breast, and told her he thought she was very pretty.” Abigail stopped talking, her face ashen. “Is that all?” Jonathan prodded. “That’s the day you had to go get her? Because she was sick?” Jonathan felt like the room was spinning. His temples were pulsing with pain. Abigail nodded, wiping her eyes on the back of her hand. “I don’t know why she didn’t tell me!” she wailed. Jonathan went to his wife and pulled her into his arms. He held her close, trying to comfort her, but his mind begged for more information. As Abigail’s sobbing quieted down, Jonathan rubbed her back and asked, “It was just what happened in the kitchen? Nothing else?” “I think so.” “Carly’s uncle…that’s Nathan Bates? Kevin’s brother?” Abigail nodded. Jonathan could picture the young man. He had been attending church with Kevin and Stephanie Bates for the last couple of months. He was in his early twenties. Jonathan remembered thinking Nathan was awkward, not making eye contact when he greeted him in church. “I need to talk to Emma.” Jonathan’s head was still pounding, and he found that his hands were trembling just as Abigail’s had when she came to tell him. “I’ll go with you.”

They walked down the hall and knocked on their daughters’ door. “Come in,” a soft voice called. Emma was lying on her bed with a book beside her, but she wasn’t reading. Instead, she was staring at the ceiling. She looked so little lying there. Her blonde hair was in pigtails. That fact struck Jonathan and he clenched his fists. How could any man touch a girl who still wore pigtails? “Sweetheart?” Jonathan sat on the foot of his daughter’s bed, as Abigail pulled her daughter onto her lap. He couldn’t remember the last time either of them had held Emma on their lap like that. “Your mama and I need to talk to you about what happened.” “I don’t want to talk about it,” Emma mumbled into her mother’s shoulder. “I need you to tell me what happened once, and then we don’t have to talk about it again.” Jonathan’s voice trembled. Emma told him the same things Abigail had reported to him. After a moment, Jonathan asked, “Is that everything that happened?” Emma didn’t respond. “Sweetheart?” Jonathan’s heart was pounding against his ribcage. “Please tell me if anything else happened.” Emma began crying, and Abigail hugged her closer to her chest. “It’s okay.” Jonathan reached out a hand to stroke his daughter’s hair. “We just have to know what happened so we can do something about it.” “He said,” Emma choked out, “if I told anyone he would hurt me.” “That’s not going to happen.” Jonathan’s voice was firm. “You are safe. I promise you. We won’t let anyone hurt you.” Emma reached her arms toward her father, and Jonathan gathered her in his. As he rocked his daughter, he thought, What are we going to do? After they had put all the kids to bed, Jonathan and Abigail collapsed on the sofa. “I feel sick,” Abigail told her husband. “Me, too.” Jonathan put his arm around his wife, and she nestled against his side. His headache was gone, but a cold emptiness had replaced the painful pounding. He felt distanced from the man sitting on the sofa. “What are we going to do?” Abigail asked. “Should we call the police?” “I don’t know.” Jonathan hesitated before saying, “I wonder if we can just take care of it ourselves, since he just touched her outside her clothes. He didn’t do anything…worse.” Abigail jerked away from her husband, and stared hard at him, “Just! He just touched her outside her clothes? Jonathan, that man violated our little girl! How can you say he just touched her.” “Abby, please.” Jonathan regretted his choice of words as soon as he said them, and now his wife was angry. Once she got angry, she was very hard to calm down. “You know I didn’t mean it like that. I’m just trying to think about what will happen if we call the police. What will happen when Kevin and Stephanie find out? The Bates’ and their relatives make up half our church. They’re related to half of Little River.” “So?” Abby challenged. “So…” Jonathan’s headache was coming back, a slow throbbing at both temples, “I wonder if we should just talk to Kevin and Stephanie and Nathan. Tell them Nathan is not welcome in our church. Tell them Emma won’t be allowed to go to Carly’s house anymore.” He paused and then added, “We can make it clear that if Nathan ever comes near our family again or ever returns to our church, we will call the police.” Abigail’s breathing had become slow and measured. Jonathan could tell she was seething. Finally, she spoke, “I don’t care who the Bates’ are related to or if the whole church splits down the middle. He hurt my daughter, and I’m not about to let him get away with it. Or do it to some other little girl.” Jonathan felt so torn. He wanted to defend and protect his daughter, but he wanted to do it quietly. He didn’t want people to start rumors that worse things had been done to her. He didn’t want to hear people whispering about Emma. At the same time, he wanted to send the message that he was her daddy…her protector…and he wouldn’t let anyone get away with hurting her. He didn’t want to let her down. Jonathan saw the disgust on Abigail’s face, and realized he had already let her down. “Little River” is an ongoing serial which debuted on 6-30-15.
