Church Funnies A few more definitions for words near and dear to the hearts of Christians everywhere: Bulletin: 1) Something to read during the sermon; 2) a fan used in churches without air conditioning; 3) your receipt for attending church. Choir: A group of people who sing loudly enough to enable the rest of us to lip-sync all hymns. Recessional hymn: The final hymn of a Church service; this hymn is usually the quietest of all hymns because so many parishioners have already left before it is sung. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> This minister just had all of his remaining teeth pulled and new dentures were being made. The first Sunday, he preached only 10 minutes. The second Sunday, he preached only 20 minutes. But, on the third Sunday, he preached 1 hour 25 minutes. When asked about this by some of the congregation, he responded this way. The first Sunday, my gums were so sore it hurt to talk. The second Sunday, my dentures were hurting a lot. Howdy Doody
Oh those wonderful Saturday mornings growing up in Emory Gap! For those of us lucky to have a TV, we watched it continuously on the weekends, then later every evening after school. Howdy was a freckle-faced boy marionette with 48 freckles, one for each state of the union (up until January 3, 1959, when Alaska was admitted as the 49th state), and was originally voiced by Buffalo Bob Smith. Although you could see all the strings attached to Howdy’s body, that didn’t matter, he was real to me. Buffalo Bob, the shows human star, dressed in western attire for every show, and Clarabell the Clown was also a big hit. Clarabell didn’t talk, but tooted horns and sprayed everyone with a bottle of seltzer. I later learned that the early Clarabell the Clown was Bob Keeshan who later became a superstar as Captain Kangaroo. I still recall the “Peanut Gallery”. This was around 40 kids who were lucky enough to get to be in the audience and watch the show live. Boy, how I wanted to be a part of that audience. When the show began, Buffalo Bob would come out and say to all the kids, “Hey kids, what time is it?” To which they would respond by loudly singing the program’s theme song. “It’s Howdy Doody time, It’s Howdy Doody time. Bob Smith and Howdy, too, Say “Howdy do” to you. Let’s give a rousing cheer, ’Cause Howdy Doody’s here, It’s time to start the show, So kids, let’s go! What a great childhood I had, sitting in front of that old black and white television set. It’s so sad that kids today won’t experience the simple times we enjoyed so much, and that still bring us such sweet memories.

Here Are 10 Things You’ll
30 ways you have never considered using wood ash If you’ve got a fireplace or fire pit full of wood ashes and would like to find a more useful purpose for them than simply tossing them in the trash, read on! We’ve come across 30 great uses for ash you may never have considered: 1. Make lye water. To do this, boil 2 or 3 spoons of clean white or gray fluffy ash with water and then sift it through a coffee filter. Lye water is a terrific cleaning agent and sanitizer for everything from clothes, to floors, windows, silverware, plates, and even rust in marble. You can also make lye by adding the ash in a cheesecloth. SAFETY NOTE: This is a simple version of this process, but for safety’s sake, it’s advised you obtain more information before making lye water as it is potentially dangerous and lye is caustic. In a bucket with holes on its base, add the cheesecloth and then ash, then hang it up. Add the water with another clean bucket underneath to collect the lye. The lye should have a brownish color, so remove the bucket when clean water starts to sift through. Test the lye by placing a fresh egg in the liquid. If the egg floats, the lye is good to go, if not, repeat the process. 2. A simple paste of ash and water is an effective way to remove stains from furniture. 3. To treat stains in clothing immediately, add a bit of ash and rub it with the white of bread after about 5 minutes. 4. Ash is an effective odor treatment. Simply sprinkle some over smelly areas like the cat box. 5. To remove odors from a refrigerator, simply put a plate of charcoal ash inside. Turn the charcoal over regularly until the smell is gone. 6. Ash can make a great DIY toothpaste. Pay close attention, though, to the type of wood used to produce the ash to avoid damaging tooth enamel. 7. For oily hair, you can wash with lye soap and rinse with vinegar. Make sure any homemade lye soap cures for at least 6 weeks prior to use. 8. Lye water is used to make a lot of sweets and foods like sun-dried grape pudding (moustalevria), honey cookies (melomakarona), and bread. Lye water makes bread fluffy and prevents it from crumbling. It’s also good for internal cleansing of the intestines. SAFETY NOTE: Lye water is very different from lye used to make soap. Never use lye in foods or on skin. 16. Ash repels lice, ticks, and fleas from pets. Make a paste of ash and vinegar and spread it over the fur for a slightly messy but very effective treatment. 17. By adding ash to stored clothing, you can repel clothing moths without the nasty smell of moth balls. Safe for years, ash covered clothing can simply be shaken off and washed when ready for use. 18. Through a somewhat involved process, lye is used to make soap. 19. With a mix of clay, ash, salt, lime, and rice rind, people in the Middle East create “Immortal eggs”, a form of preservation that lasts for many months. 20. Sodium Carbonate, a popular household cleaner, can be made out of ash. 21. Ash can be used to melt ice with its high salt content. 22. Charcoal collected from ash is a popular filter material. 23. Blurry wine can be filtered through charcoal. 24. You can use charcoal to filter drinking water. 25. In metal bins, charcoal can be used to remove humidity from basements, cabinets, and under sinks. 26. An application of ash can quickly extinguish a fire. 27. A layer of ash is often used to protect and preserve food by deterring insects from stored seeds and produce. 28. It can be used in wounds, to kill bacteria and promote healing. This is done by melting homemade soap in lye water and rinsing a wound with it. 29. You can preserve your fruits and vegetables for days or even years by digging a hole in the ground and filling it with ash. Add your vegetables and fruit, ensuring enough space between them so they don’t touch each other or the soil. Seal the hole with a piece of wood and let it be. 30. Rennet, a key ingredient in most cheeses used to be preserved by placing it inside an animal horn, topping it with ash, then sealing it with mud and suspending it from a tree. That process could help rennet be usable for years.

An old hillbilly farmer had a wife who nagged him unmercifully. Actress Katherine MacGregor was actually injured in a scene where her character, Mrs. Oleson, falls off a horse. Though the series is based on the stories of the real-life Laura Ingalls Wilder, some characters were created exclusively for the show, most notably: Albert Ingalls and Adam Kendall. Melissa Gilbert appeared in 205 Little House episodes, more than any actor, even Michael Landon. Charles Ingalls named his second daughter after his mother, Laura Michael Landon directed 89 episodes of Little House Twins Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush played the role of Carrie Ingalls. Both sisters appeared together in the same episode just one time—when Carrie invents an imaginary friend. Oscar Winners on the set! Hints for Outside If you have chickens save your kitchen scraps for them. This is definitely not a replacement for a balanced chicken feed, but kitchen scraps are a great supplement to their diet. My ladies eat the rest of the apples my kids don't finish, the outer layers of cabbage, wilted lettuce, leftover rice, oatmeal that doesn't get finished at breakfast, the pumpkin guts from our jack-o-lanterns, tops of tomatoes, the peels from batches of applesauce, and more. Not only do the nutrients in the scraps help my hens stay healthy and produce nutritious eggs for my family, but the ladies also make the scraps into great compost in the meantime. Plus, the treats make them happy and happy hens make the best eggs! Get rid of itch from mosquito bite. Apply soap on the area for instant relief. Do a plant swap with a family member, friend, or neighbor when you're dividing plants and flowers in your garden or if your plants have sent off some volunteers. My mom has a really pretty orange flower that goes nuts in her yard every year, so she digs them up, puts them in little cups or pots with some soil, gives them to me, and I plant them in my yard. I've given her some of the sage in my garden to plant in her yard, as well as some lamb's ear. Remove seeds from gourds the easy way. Don’t mess around with a spoon. Instead, use an ice cream scoop. The shape of the scoop makes it easier to hold onto the seeds and connective tissue. Plant some lavender under your washing line, or if it on a patio or other hard standing, put some pots of lavender underneath. As sheets swing around on the line they brush against the lavender and pick up a subtle scent. Treat bee stings. Cut an onion in half and press the cut side to the sting, holding it there for at least ten minutes. Onions contain an enzyme that break down proteins and stops pain if applied soon enough after a sting. Stop ants. Draw a chalk line on the floor or wherever ants tend to march. They never cross a chalk line. You can also spray vinegar around doors, appliances and along other areas. To prevent ants from walking up an object, such as an outdoor patio table that has one center pole, attach tape to the pole so the sticky side is showing. Ants never cross something that's sticky. Bugs at night. Replace your white light bulbs with yellow ones. Insects don't see these colors as well as others so they're not as attracted to the light as they are when white lights are used. Keep deer off yard. Use the shishi-odoshi (also called deer chaser, deer scarer, bamboo clacker, or water hammer). This was originally developed by Japanese farmers to scare off deer and boar from crops. As the water flows from the bamboo spout, the knocking portion fills and spills the water creating a rhythmic knocking sound as it hits a rock. You can also try planting some deer repelling fragrant herbs. catmint, chives, garlic, onions, lavender sage, spearmint, thyme, and yarrow. Trash cans. To keep critters away from garbage, mix up two tablespoons liquid dish soap, two tablespoons cayenne pepper, and one quart warm water. Spray liberally over trash to keep varmints at bay.

October Sky Festival October 17, 2015 The land of O.S. (Oliver Springs) is at it again. They are busy planning for the 8th annual October Sky Festival. There will be a self-guided walking/driving tour of historic sites complete with a brochure and map. Also, there will be a Narrated Tour of movie and historic town sites. Rocket launches are scheduled along with live music and entertainment. There will be a large array of arts and crafts, a kid's zone, and a variety of food vendors. Heaven: Everything Old is New Again
It’s hard to see things grow old. The town in which I grew up is growing old. I was there recently. Aug. 8th Some of the buildings are boarded up. Some of the houses are torn down. Some of my teachers are Dustin Branson, 20, Harriman retired; some are buried. The old movie house where I took my dates has “For Sale” on the marquee, Aug. 9th long since outdated by the newer theaters that give you eight choices. The only visitors to the drive-in Mary E. Moore, 94, Harriman theater are tumbleweeds and rodents. Memories of first dates and senior proms are weather-worn by Aug. 11th Jennifer Lawson, 47, Kingston the endless rain of years. High school sweethearts are divorced. A cheerleader died of an aneurysm. Aug. 12th Our fastest halfback is buried only a few plots from my own father. Ralph Crabtree, 85, Kingston I wish I could make it all new again. I wish I could blow the dust off the streets. I wish I could walk Aug. 13th through the familiar neighborhood, and wave at the familiar faces, and pet the familiar dogs, and Thomas E. John the Baptist was humble. He felt he was not worthy enough to baptize Jesus. Yet, according to scripture, it was his job to baptize Jesus. Forbes launched America’s Richest Families. Are your relatives on the list?
A few of the families who made FORBES second annual ranking of America’s Richest Families –we capped the list at 200 members this year — have withstood such challenges. Some, like the Huber family, have survived for six generations, dating back to the 1800s. Each of these clans is worth at least $1.2 billion. Collectively, they’re worth $1.3 trillion. Thirty-three newcomers join the ranks, including the Sackler family, whose company makes pain drug OxyContin; the Greenberg family behind Skechers shoes, and the Trincheros, owners of the fourth largest U.S. wine company. The Walton family is the wealthiest family in the U.S. for the second year in a row. Six heirs of Wal-Mart founders Sam Walton and James “Bud” Walton together own about 54% of the global retailer. Forbes estimates their fortune at $149 billion — down from $152 billion last year due to a dip in Wal-Mart’s stock price. They are followed by the Koch family: two of the four Koch brothers, Charles and David, are politically active and run conglomerate Koch Industries, the second largest private company in the country. Coming in third: the Mars family, owners of the world’s largest candy company, maker of M&Ms and Milky Way, share an estimated $80 billion fortune. Frank Mars started selling candy from his kitchen in Tacoma, Washington in 1911. Exercise details The exercise in unconventional warfare involves United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) with other U.S Armed Forces units in multiple states, including Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico and Utah. Troops engaging in the exercise will assume the roles of either occupying or resistance forces. Most locations are in sparsely populated arid regions near small towns. Some participants will wear civilian attire and drive civilian vehicles. Maps of the exercise include areas of the United States such as Colorado and California where no actual operations are planned. The cities in Texas include Bastrop/Smithville, Big Spring, Caddo Lake, Caldwell, Christoval, College Station, Dell City, Eldorado, Goliad, Junction, Leakey, Menard, Mountain Home, San Angelo, San Antonio and Victoria. The USSOCOM claimed "the size and scope of Jade Helm sets this one apart" from previous training exercises such as Derna Bridge or Robin Sage. Some parts of the operational details have been disclosed, including that there will be 1,200 troops participating, and according to CNN, "mainly Army Green Berets, but also a small group of Navy SEALS and Air Force special operations troops as well as conventional Army infantry." Lt. Col. Mark Lastoria, at an information session for residents in Bastrop, Texas, said the realistic military training helps soldiers adapt to unfamiliar terrain. In that location, sixty soldiers would take part, including the presence of two Humvee vehicles and a "water buffalo" water tank. Private land offered by residents would be used for the exercise, though he noted they would not be paid for the land or receive a tax break of any kind. Lastoria also claimed $150,000 in revenue would be brought to the area because of food, fuel, and shopping.

Someone needs to retire September 20th, 1911. The RMS Olympic, White Star Line’s lead transatlantic ocean liner collides with a British warship called HMS Hawke. The Olympic suffers severe damage to its hull and nearly capsizes. Fortunately, no-one is seriously injured or killed. Seven months later, the sinking of the Titanic would become one of the deadliest maritime disasters, claiming the lives of more than 1,500 people. In the morning hours of November 21st, 1916, the White Star Line’s largest and latest Olympic class vessel, the HSMS Britannic was shook by an explosion. Fifty-five minutes later, it sank in the Mediterranean Sea. Thirty people lose their lives. It is unclear whether the explosion was caused by a torpedo or underwater mine. What do all of these disasters on water have in common? Well, besides involving three out state of the art passenger ships belonging to the same shipping company? One stewardess/nurse was present on all of them when things went bad. She survived them all, leading some to believe she was an albatross.

Easy pitting for large fruit – Cut plums, peaches, and nectarines in half length-wise. Grip the two halves and twist in opposite directions then use your thumbnail or the tip of a butter knife to pop the pit. Easily slice soft cheeses. – Even if you don’t have one of those fancy string cutters, you can simulate the same effect. Use a piece of unflavored dental floss to slice through soft cheeses without squishing them. Grate cheese with ease. – For semi-soft cheeses, grating can be messy business. Freeze them for thirty minutes or so before shredding to make this job go a little more smoothly. To remove blood stains, soak the item in cold water for at least 30 minutes. If the stain remains, soak again in lukewarm water with added ammonia. Use 3 tbsp. ammonia per gallon of water. Rinse well. If the stain is really stubborn and still remains, work in a laundry detergent, and wash, using color safe bleach. Remove cooking smells from skin. – Wash your hands in lemon juice, baking soda, or a mixture of both. These two common kitchen items quickly neutralize powerful smells like garlic oil and onion juice.

Twice-Baked Potatoes
8 baking potatoes, washed both), plus more for topping 3 tablespoons canola oil 1/2 cup whole milk 2 sticks salted butter 2 teaspoons seasoned salt 1 cup bacon bits ( fry your own!) 3 green onions, sliced 1 cup sour cream Freshly ground black pepper 1 cup Cheddar or Jack cheese (or a mix of Preheat the oven to 400°. Place the potatoes on a baking sheet. Rub them with the canola oil and bake for 1 hour, making sure they're cooked through. Slice the butter into pats. Place in a large mixing bowl and add the bacon bits and sour cream. Remove the potatoes from the oven. Lower the heat to 350°. With a sharp knife, cut each potato in half lengthwise. Scrape out the insides into the mixing bowl, being careful not to tear the shell. Leave a small rim of potato intact for support. Lay the hollowed out potato shells on a baking sheet. Smash the potatoes into the butter, bacon and sour cream. Add the cheese, milk, seasoned salt, green onions and black pepper to taste and mix together well. (IMPORTANT: If you plan to freeze the twice-baked potatoes, do NOT add the green onions.) Fill the potato shells with the filling. Top each potato with a little more grated cheese and pop 'em in the oven until the potato is warmed through, 15 to 20 minutes.
Chicken-Bacon-Ranch Pizza Sticks
1/2 cup chopped green onions (8 medium) 1 can refrigerated classic pizza crust 1/3 cup ranch dressing 2 cups shredded 2 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar-Monterey cooked chicken breast Jack cheese blend (10 oz) 1/3 cup cooked real bacon pieces Additional ranch dressing for dipping Heat oven to 400°. Lightly grease cookie sheet. Unroll pizza crust onto cookie sheet; press to spread Ripen fruit faster. – Drop unripe fruit (green bananas, crunchy peaches, rock-solid plums) into a paper bag and fold down the top. dough out into an even layer. Spread 1/3 cup dressing over dough with back of spoon. Sprinkle chicken, bacon and half of the green onions over dressing in even layers. Top with cheese. Bake Ethylene gas emitted by the fruit will be trapped inside the paper 10-12 minutes or until crust is lightly browned and cheese in center is bubbly. In the early 1920s, Hugo Stinnes was the wealthiest man in Germany, at a time when Bob Tonachio the country was the world’s third-largest economy. In many ways, Stinnes played a role in Germany similar to the role Warren Buffett plays in the U.S. today. He was an ultra-wealthy investor whose opinion was eagerly sought on important political matters, who exercised powerful behind-the-scenes influence and who seemed to make all the right decisions when it came to gaming markets. From 1922–1923, Germany suffered the worst hyperinflation experienced by a major industrial economy in modern times. The exchange rate between the German currency, the reichsmark and the dollar went from 208-to-1 in early 1922 to 4.2 trillion-to-1 in late 1923. At that point, the reichsmark became worthless and was swept down sewers as litter. But Stinnes was not wiped out during this hyperinflation. Stinnes was born in 1870 into a prosperous German family that had interests in coal mining. He worked in mines to obtain a practical working knowledge of the industry and took courses in Berlin at the Academy of Mining. Later, he inherited his family’s business and expanded it by buying his own mines. Then he diversified into shipping, buying cargo lines. His own vessels were used to transport his coal within Germany along the Rhine river and from his mines abroad. His vessels also carried lumber and grains. His diversification included ownership of a leading newspaper, which he used to exert political influence. Prior to the Weimar hyperinflation, Stinnes borrowed vast sums of money in reichsmarks. When the hyperinflation hit, Stinnes was perfectly positioned. Coal, steel and shipping retained their values. It didn’t matter what happened to the German currency: A hard asset is still a hard asset and does not go away even if the currency goes to zero. Stinnes’ international holdings also served him well because they produced profits in hard currencies, not worthless reichsmarks. Some of these profits were kept offshore in the form of gold held in Swiss vaults. That way he could escape both hyperinflation and German taxation. Finally, he repaid his debts in worthless reichsmarks, making them disappear. Not only was Stinnes not harmed by the Weimar hyperinflation, but his empire prospered and he made more money than ever. He expanded his holdings and bought out bankrupt competitors. Stinnes made so much money during the Weimar hyperinflation that his German nickname was Inflationskönig, which means Inflation King. When the dust
settled and Germany returned to a new gold-backed currency, Stinnes was one of the richest men in the world, while the German middle classes were destroyed. Interestingly, Warren Buffett is using the same techniques today. It appears that Buffett has studied Stinnes carefully and is preparing for the same calamity that Stinnes saw — hyperinflation. Follow Buffett’s Lead A few years back, Buffett purchased major transportation assets in the form of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. This railroad consists of hard assets in the form of rights of way, adjacent mining rights, rail and rolling stock. The railroad makes money moving hard assets such as ores and grains. Buffett next purchased huge oil and natural gas assets in Canada in the form of Suncor. Buffett can now move his Suncor oil on his Burlington Northern railroad in exactly the same way that Stinnes moved his coal on his own ships in 1923. Buffett is also a major holder in Exxon Mobil, the largest energy company in the world. For decades, Buffett owned one of the most powerful newspapers in the U.S.: The Washington Post. He sold that stake recently to Jeff Bezos of Amazon but still retains communications assets. He’s also purchased large offshore assets in China and elsewhere that produce non-dollar profits that can be retained offshore tax-free. A huge part of Buffett’s portfolio is in financial stocks — particularly in banks and insurance companies — that are highly leveraged borrowers. Like Stinnes in the 1920s, Buffett can profit when the liabilities of these financial giants are wiped out by inflation, while he nimbly redeploys assets to hedge his own exposures. In short, Buffett is borrowing from the Stinnes playbook. He’s using leverage to diversify into hard assets in energy, transportation and foreign currencies. He’s using his communications assets and prestige to stay informed on behind-the-scenes developments on the political landscape. Buffett is now positioned in much the same way that Stinnes was positioned in 1922. If hyperinflation were to slam the U.S. today, Buffett’s results would be the same as Stinnes’. His hard assets would explode in value, his debts would be eliminated and he would be in a position to buy out bankrupt competitors. Of course, the middle classes in the U.S. would be wiped out, as they were in Germany. In the near future, I will mention a number of investments you can buy now to protect your portfolio against a dollar crisis. All these assets should skyrocket when the dollar loses its status as the world’s reserve currency. Old Wife’s Tales 1. An apple a day will keep the doctor away.
This is perhaps the most common saying when it comes to a mother’s chiding. All you crave is a cookie or some crunchy potato chips, and what holds you back from indulging (or at least gives you extra guilt pangs) is this simple and easy saying. This little bit of health advice not only is supremely easy to remember, but it accurately conveys the importance of a nutritious apple in your diet. Apples contain soluble fibers that promotes blood health, boron which leads the way for strong bones, a cancer-inhibiting flavonoid called quercetin, vitamin C, and phytonutrients which fight heart disease and diabetes. There’s no reason not to find a crunchy, delicious apple right now and every day.
2. Chicken soup/bone broth cures colds and other illnesses.
Many of us grew up on chicken soup as a remedy for colds, the flu, and basically for anything that made us slow down. I always chalked this remedy up as a cultural practice or just to the fact that it’s warm and delicious; so of course it’s a comforting option! Recently though, this whole chicken-soup-as-treatment has been making a lot more sense. Bone broth has finally hit the mainstream, and the benefits of a hearty broth-based chicken soup are hard to ignore. Bone broth benefits include reduced inflammation and chicken contains cysteine which is an amino acid which thins mucus and gets it moving out of your system. Plus, it just tastes delicious.

I remember my mother would always predict the weather this way as we made our way to school in the morning. If there ever was a red tint to the sky, she would recite these lines and sure enough, later in the day the rain would come. It isn’t a freak coincidence that the color of the sky can determine the weather. The Library of Congress (source) provides us the science behind this phenomenon: A red sky at night is caused by sun rays being filtered by a high amount of dust, which indicates high pressure and stable conditions, leading to good weather. A red morning sky indicates that this good weather has passed and that low pressure systems and rain could be on the way. No need for the wayward forecasts of the nightly news, tune into the sky to see if you need to pack your umbrella for the coming day.
4. Full moons make people a little crazy.
A full moon is a vampire’s delight, a werewolf’s night on the town, and also where we get the term ‘lunatic’ (luna is the Latin prefix for moon). And you’ve probably noticed that when people around you are going crazy, or maybe even you are feeling on-edge, there’s often a full moon shining it’s brilliant light on the world. Is it a sheer coincidence that cultures throughout the world have lauded the full moon with spooky and powerful affects? There may just be an explanation. Scientists have argued over the moon’s ability to throw off our balance of water molecules like it does the ocean’s tides. While this theory has for the most part been de-bunked, some offer a much simpler, saner explanation: it’s hard to sleep during a full moon. The brightness of the evening sky lit up early, pre-technology nights and drove people to erratic behavior due to sleep deprivation. Of course, it’s not an air-tight explanation for today’s times, but if you ask a police officer, emergency care person, or school teacher about how crazy it can be at work during a full moon, that should be convincing enough.
5. Ice cream gives you nightmares.
This is a common saying that my grandmother always used to tell me. At first I believed her, and then I got to thinking maybe that’s just what she always said to dissuade me from a last sugary treat! Ok, we all know that ice cream isn’t health food and that no one can really blame my granny for wanting to save me from a less than healthy bedtime snack…but nightmares?! It’s sad but true. Eating or drinking sugary or caffeinated treats before bed causes a shift in one’s metabolism which turns on all sorts of signals in your body and especially in your brain. This extra activity then can lead to more vivid dreams.
6. Yawning is contagious.
For many of us, empirical evidence is enough to prove this saying true. It’s happened to us all when, at the end of the night, everyone is so tired that instead of saying our goodbyes, we all just pass around a good yawn or two. The history and science behind this happening has been in the works in our species for awhile. An ingrained communicatory response triggers this chain reaction, and actually, the same phenomenon happens with chimpanzees. We’re subconsciously connected to each other by a mimicking mechanism which has been honed throughout our evolution.
7. Fish is brain food.
Before your big meeting at work, to fuel for an important test, or just for when you’re feeling a little dull, fish is great food for your brain. You’ve heard it all before, so now here’s the science: Fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, herring, and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which restore and strengthen our brain cells. These healthful acids also help fortify your brain cells from diseases. So go ahead and eat up for your smarts!

In 1883, Henry Ziegland dumped his longtime girlfriend. Heartbroken, she hanged herself. Her brother vowed to avenge her and hunted down Ziegland. When he finally found him, he aimed for his head and shot. Ziegland fell to the ground. The girl’s brother, believing he had exerted his vengeance, committed suicide with the same gun. Little did he know that Ziegland would survive, for the bullet had merely grazed his cheek and lodged itself in a nearby tree. Several years later, Ziegland attempted to cut down that particular tree. He had the brilliant idea of using dynamite and the resulting explosion sent the dormant bullet right through his skull. It seems the bullet refused to miss its target. In 1838, Edgar Allan Poe published The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. The novel includes the tale of four men stranded at sea after their ship sank. Desperate, the men kill and eat a cabin boy named Richard Parker. Forty-six years later, a ship called Mignonette suffered the same fate. The four starving survivors killed and ate the cabin boy whose real name was -you guessed it- Richard Parker. Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain was born in 1835, shortly after the appearance of Halley’s Comet. Later in life, he predicted he would die when the comet returned. In 1910, one day after Halley’s Comet appeared at its brightest, Mark Twain died of a heart attack. Perhaps Twain considered the comet a harbinger of death. If so, he had good reason. In 1222, as the comet passed near Earth, it appeared to be moving west. At the time, Genghis Khan was preparing for his invasion. Believing this was a sign, he also marched west, killing millions in the process. A Frenchman called Jean Marie Dubarry was executed for murdering his father on February 13, 1746. One hundred years later, on the 13th of February, another man was executed for patricide. His name? Jean Marie Dubarry. A French Baron named Rodemire de Tarazone was killed by Claude Volbonne in 1872. Two decades earlier, Baron de Tarazone’s father had been killed by a different man, also named Claude Volbonne. On November 26, 1911, three men were convicted of murdering Sir Edmund Berry and were promptly hanged at Greenberry Hill in London. The men’s names were Green, Berry and Hill.

If you can’t find your hot water bottle, you can substitute a sock filled with rice that’s been in the freezer for an hour or so. Try using a pillow designed to pull heat away from your head. According to the National Sleep Foundation sleep surface affects your body temperature. Sleep comfortably with a hypoallergenic cooling gel pillow with layers of materials that absorb heat, allowing your head to stay cool all night long. Millions of God Loving American citizens were stunned and disappointed to see their cherished White House used to promote what God calls “wicked” and “evil.” And guess what,” Ignorance of God’s Law is no excuse.” One can say the same to those judges in the Supreme Court who apparently don’t know those laws either. And I hate to correct you, but I did hear you say, “it’s my House,“ referring to the White House. That crown jewel belongs to “we the people.” We do not appreciate it (the White House) being used to promote abomination. Of course, that is exactly what your staff did when they celebrated the High Court’s decision on gay marriage, by lighting up “our house.” They disgraced us before the world, but most important, before our “Creator, God Almighty, the Supreme Judge.” That Supreme Judge left plenty of examples in the Holy Bible to keep future generations from making the same mistake and ending up being destroyed, like Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim. Those cities/nations incurred God’s wrath because of same-sex. In 2 Peter 2:6 you will find that these cities were made “an example, unto those that after should live ungodly.” Now the USA has taken it even further, by saying to same-sex partners, “you have the right to get married.” Instead of listening to the Word of God you elected to come out in favor of moral perversion. We know, from God’s Word, that those who practice same-sex, God will give “them over to a reprobate mind.” That, after death, means eternal damnation, first in “Hell” and later “the lake of fire” forever and ever. So ask yourself, “why would a well-meaning and loving person want anyone to pursue such a life-style? And you are promoting this life-style from our White House!!!! We need to correct a misconception: God Loves Us, and we who have been saved by God’s grace, love Him and all mankind in the world. There is only one race, the human race. Grandparents are Priceless Grandparents are a lady and a man who have no little children of there own. They like other people’s. A grandfather is a man and a grandmother is a lady! Grandparents don’t have to do anything except be there when we come to see them. They are so old they shouldn’t play hard or run. It is good if they drive us to the shops and give us money. When they take us for walks, they slow down past things like pretty leaves and caterpillars. They show us and talk to us about the color of the flowers and also why we shouldn’t step on “cracks.” They don’t say, “Hurry up.” Usually grandmothers are fat but not too fat to tie your shoes. They wear glasses and funny underwear. They can take their teeth and gums out. Grandparents don’t have to be smart. They have to answer questions like, “Why isn’t God married?” and “How come dogs chase cats?” When they read to us, they don’t skip. They don’t mind if we ask for the same story over again. Everybody should try to have a grandmother, especially if you don’t have television, because they are the only grown ups who like to spend time with us. They know we should have snack-time before bedtime and they say prayers with us every time and kiss us even when we’ve acted bad. A 6-year-old was asked where his grandma lived. “Oh,” he said, “She lives at the airport and when we want her we just go get her. Then when we’re done having her visit, we take her back to the airport.” Grandpa is the smartest man on earth! He teaches me good things but I don’t get to see him enough to get as smart as him!

Hitler was a terrible person
It seems that Nazi kidnappings didn't always end at concentration camps. Most people know the tragic history behind the Holocaust, during which Germany's Nazi party, under the rule of dictator Adolf Hitler, rounded up and killed millions of Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, communists, homosexuals, and other individuals they deemed "inferior". But, not many people know about another major kidnapping operation under Hitler's reign. Hitler and his party were obsessed with Aryanism, a set of racial traits deemed by them to be superior. These traits were generally possessed by German and Nordic people. When Hitler spoke of creating a "Master Race", he referred to wiping out every individual that did not have Aryan traits. In addition to his mass-murdering tendencies, when Hitler found individuals with Aryan traits, he was interested in making them part of his new German kingdom, often referred to as the Third Reich. And, apparently, many Swedish children did have these traits. Under Hitler's, many Polish children were kidnapped and placed in German population. Even more heartbreaking, only 10 to 15% were returned home after WWII ended, with children 10 and under often not remembering their Polish childhoods.

The Two Pebbles Many years ago in a small Italian town, a merchant had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to the moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the merchant's beautiful daughter, so he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the merchant's debt if he could marry the daughter. Both the merchant and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. The moneylender told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty bag. The girl would then have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become the moneylender's wife and her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white pebble, she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven. But, if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. They were standing on a pebble-strewn path in the merchant's garden. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick her pebble from the bag. The girl put her hand into the bag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. "Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked." Sometimes it is necessary to think out of the box or, in this case, out of the bag.
Updating her appearance A middle-aged woman has a heart attack and is taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she has a near death experience. During that experience she sees God and asks if this is it. God says no and explains that she has another 30 years to live. Upon her recovery she decides to just stay in the hospital and have a face lift, liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, etc. She even has someone come in and change her hair color. She figures since she’s got another 30 years she might as well make the most of it. She walks out of the hospital after the last operation and is killed by an ambulance speeding by. She arrives in front of God and complains, “I thought you said I had another 30 years.” God replies,” I didn’t recognize you.”

Ferguson First Time Winner Sandra L. Stout

The Carolina Crash was run on August 15th at Smoky Mountain Speedway which was sponsored by Fire Aide. After time trials took place, it was young driver Chris Ferguson setting fast time and then going on to take the checkers in the Super Late Models Feature. Ferguson was followed by Mark Douglas in 2nd, Jeff Wolfenbarger 3rd, Billy Ogle, Jr. 4th, Roger Best 5th, and Ross White 6th. Ferguson opened up a half of a track lead on his way to win. In the Limited Late Models it was Bobby Griffin taking the checkers with Jason Manley 2nd, Greg Estes 3rd, Sammie Russell 4th, and Charles Parker 5th. The Street Stocks were also in action with Chris Rickett taking the checkers with Steve Clark 2nd, Eric Griffith 3rd, Westley Lester 4th, and Ben Sexton 5th. The last race of the season will be run on Sept. 19th when the Southern All Stars come to town. It is also the 2015 Hall of Fame Race. Congratulations go out to Herman Goddard of Knoxville for being inducted into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame, and also to Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN, who was inducted into the National Dirt Track Racing Hall of Fame.

Sandra Stout Hall of Fame Race Brad Byrd, the race director at Wartburg Speedway, has announced a special race for Sunday, Sept. 6th. It will be sponsored by Jerry Duncan Ford and it will be the 1st Annual Hall of Fame Race which will be named the Sandra Stout Hall of Fame Race. The Sandra Stout Hall Of Fame which will feature old race cars from days gone by, racing memorabilia like trophies, helmets, photos, etc. Sandra was a longtime photographer and newspaper columnist that recorded a tremendous amount of history about the speedway. Sandra passed away in 2011 at the age of 62. In addition to the hall of fame ceremony there will be a full slate of racing action including the main event the Jerry Duncan Ford Gus Chilton Memorial $2,000 To Win Late Model Show, a $500 to win UMP Open Wheel feature, a $400 to win Sportsman feature and the Pony & Thunder divisions will also be competing that night for $300 to win features.

Get a good night’s sleep without medication
Stress at work, sweltering temperatures, and many more factors of daily life can all add up to equal a night of zero sleep. While strong prescription drugs are a common go-to for many, they can mess up your natural sleep rhythms, get you hooked, and leave you in a foggy trance. Skip the potent meds and find some peace with a few of these calming, natural, and effective remedies. Try adding one or a few of these to your nightly routine, and you’ll be resting easy and naturally. 1. Aromatherapy Taking a few moments to concentrate on your breath can bring perspective and calmness to many areas of your life. If you are tossing and turning in bed, you can rein in on wandering thoughts and worries by focusing on the length of your breath. Try a continuous breathing exercise like counting to ten with each inhale and exhale. Expand your breath as much as you can and repeat as desired. A little aromatherapy help can make this kind of breathing exercise even more effective. Lemon balm, chamomile, vanilla, sandalwood, and especially lavender oils can be used either on their own or in combination to make a sleepy-time scent. These oils are very concentrated, so start by just using a single drop on your pillow or invest in an aromatherapy diffuser to get a constant and gentle mist going in your room. An oil massage can also be effective. Simply put a drop or two on the tips of your fingers along with a good mixer like almond oil. A little on your forehead, chest, and/or shoulders will do the trick. Another way to reap the benefits of these powerful oils and to get a nice before bed cleanup is to hop in a warm bath with a few added drops of oil. 2. Supplemental Herbs -Valerian is great for relieving tension and easing the mind. It’s a gentle but effective sedative and leaves no side effects or groggy feelings in the morning. Try a few capsules before bed. About four should be enough for four hours of sleep. Take a few more if you wake up in the night. One thing to keep in mind with valerian is that after some use, a tolerance can be developed. If you feel that you need to up your intake too much, take a break and try another helpful herb on this list. – California poppy treats restlessness, calms the mind, and keeps anxiety at bay. This helpful herb will help you fall asleep and it will also improve the quality and depth of this rest. Try 30 drops a tincture of California poppy and get ready to sleep easy. This gentle herb is also safe for children. – Passion flower is another helpful and natural remedy that is gentle enough for children. It’s a good aid to keep on your nightstand and to take in case your sleep is interrupted. It’s very gentle and can be taken in large doses. Try 40-60 drops of tincture or until you feel calm. – Hops is great for digestion and stress. Grab a tincture or some tea and follow the written instructions. Due to the naturally existing steroids in hops, this remedy should not be used by children or pregnant women. – Chamomile, catnip, and kava kava teas all provide a anxiety relief and help to calm the body and mind. Try a properly steeped cup before you go to bed and add some honey for an added sweet treat. 3. Other Natural Supplements – Melatonin is a hormone produced by a gland in the brain. This important hormone is what controls your normal sleep patterns and its production is controlled somewhat by sunlight. You may have experienced this in the winter months when the sun goes down early and cause your energy levels to plummet. High levels of melatonin will help you get some rest and you can gain a boost by taking it in supplement form. Because it is a hormone, pregnant women and children should refrain from taking this supplement. It may change blood pressure levels, so speak to your doctor before trying it out. – L-theanine is a handy amino acid found in green tea. Although green tea isn’t often thought of as a sleep aid due to its caffeine content, a cup of the decaffeinated beverage a few hours before bed can help to calm your system. The pure supplement is also a good way to get a natural, before-bed boost. – Magnesium deprivation can cause restlessness and will make it hard to get a good night’s sleep. Throughout the day, munch on some magnesium-heavy food like leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, and almonds. For a more powerful boost, a magnesium supplement may be helpful, however be sure to check with your doctor as it is a powerful substance and could negatively impact some health issues. 4. Epsom Salts A great way to get a magnesium boost without the supplements is to take an Epsom salt bath. This old, trusty remedy is great for soothing tired muscles and relieving tension in the body. Get some warm water running and add a few cups of Epsom crystals. The whole practice will have a soothing effect on your body and mind. 5. Natural, Breathable Linens One of the best ways to settle in for the night is to make every effort to get your body comfortable. Your skin needs to breathe and the temperature of your environment needs to stay low. Invest in some quality pajamas and linens to keep yourself cool, comfy, and rested. Problems with sleep can sometimes be an indication of anxiety, depression, or other disorders, so if sleeplessness persists, contact your doctor. Changes in your routine can help to get yourself ready for a deep sleep. Avoid your computer, tv, or other screens before bed. Journaling can help you ease a troubled mind as well as doing some yoga poses especially aimed at relaxation like Child’s Pose or Supine Twists.

Hello Readers, A couple of years ago I did a column about the nicknames so many of us had back in our younger days. I forgot one...My Dad...A lot of his coworkers called him Kilroy, for some unknown reason. Now I know a lot of you will remember the name Kilroy and the drawings, seemed like they were everywhere, of a man peeking over a fence, just his hands, nose, eyes and the top of his head showing. Underneath was usually written,"Kilroy Was Here." I remember seeing it on railroad cars as they passed through town. Here is some research on "Kilroy" sent to me by Ken Broyles. (From WC: This is the engraving on the WWII memorial showing just how important Kilroy was.) KILROY WAS HERE! In 1946 the American Transit Association, through its radio program, "Speak to America sponsored a nationwide contest to find the REAL Kilroy, offering a prize of a real trolley car to the person who could prove himself to be the genuine article. Almost 40 men stepped forward to make that claim but only James Kilroy from Halifax, Massachusetts had evidence of his identity. Kilroy was a 46 year old shipyard worker during the war. He worked as a checker at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy. His job was to go around & check on the number of rivets completed. Riveters were on piecework and got paid by the rivet. Kilroy would count a block of rivets and put a check mark in semi-waxed lumber chalk, so the rivets wouldn't be counted twice. When Kilroy went off duty, the riveters would erase the mark. Later on, an off-shift inspector would come through and count the rivets a second time, resulting in double pay for the riveters.

As a joke, U.S. servicemen began placing the graffiti wherever they landed, claiming it was already there when they arrived. It's only 25 cents!!!!" Kilroy became the U.S. Super-GI who had always "already been" wherever GI's went. It became a challenge to place the logo in the most unlikely places imaginable (it is said to be atop Mt. Everest, the Statue of Liberty, the underside of the Arch De Triumphe, and even scrawled in the dust of the moon.) And as the war went on, the legend grew. Underwater demolition teams routinely sneaked ashore on Japanese-held islands in the Pacific to map the terrain for the coming invasions by U.S. troops (and thus, presumably, were the first GI's there). On one occasion, however, they reported seeing enemy troops painting over the Kilroy logo. In 1945, an outhouse was built for the exclusive use of Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill at the Potsdam conference. The first person inside was Stalin, who emerged and asked his aide (in Russian), "Who is Kilroy?'.... To help prove his authenticity in 1946, James Kilroy brought along officials from the shipyard and some of the riveters. He won the trolley car, which he gave to his nine children as a Christmas gift and set it up as a playhouse in the Kilroy front yard in Halifax, Massachusetts.".......So Now You Know... Thanks Ken for that story. We Will NOT Forgot! On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group Al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Often referred to as 9/11, the attacks resulted in extensive death and destruction, triggering major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defining the presidency of George W. Bush. Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., including more than 400 police officers and firefighters. On September 11, 2001, at 8:45 a.m. on a clear Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in higher floors. As the evacuation of the tower and its twin got underway, television cameras broadcasted live images of what initially appeared to be a freak accident. Then, 18 minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767–United Airlines Flight 175–appeared out of the sky, turned sharply toward the World Trade Center and sliced into the south tower near the 60th floor. The collision caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below. America was under attack.

The Chocolate Chip Cookie: An Accident
The Toll House Cookie, one of the most famous inventions ever, was an accident. Ruth Wakefield and her husband, Kenneth, owned the Toll House Inn near Whitman, Massachusetts, in the 1930s. Ruth made homemade food for her guests. One evening in 1937, she was making butter cookies and thought she would make them all chocolate instead. She cut a bar of chocolate into tiny pieces and added them to the cookie dough. She thought that the chocolate would melt completely and she would have chocolate cookies. When the cookies came out of the oven, the chocolate hadn't melted at all! Instead, the "chocolate chips" had kept their form. The guests loved the cookies, and people began to come to the inn just to eat the famous cookies. How did Nestle get involved? Well, Ruth Wakefield cut up a bar of Nestle chocolate when she made the Toll House cookies. So Ruth went to Nestle with her recipe for "Chocolate Crunch Cookies." Nestle liked the idea, and they got permission from Ruth to put her recipe on the back of their chocolate bars. In return, she got all the chocolate she wanted to keep on baking those cookies. Nestle tried to make it easy for people to make these cookies. They even included a small chopper in the package. Finally, in 1939, the Chocolate Morsels that we know today were introduced.

How the Brain Communicates The brain is part of the nervous system. Together with the spinal cord, it makes up the central nervous system. The brain connects to nerves that travel throughout the body. Nerves from our senses (hearing, seeing, touch, etc.) send signals to the brain to let the brain know what is going on in the outside world. Paul Revere’s Ride
In April of 1775 the British Army was stationed in Boston and rumor had it that they were about to make a move on the leaders of the Sons of Liberty and other American Patriots. The Sons of Liberty were watching the British closely so they could warn the colonists if they started to attack. Two main riders were to set out and warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Lexington. Paul Revere would go across the Charles River to Charlestown and then to Lexington. William Dawes would ride a longer, but different route. This way, hopefully one of them would make it there safely to warn Adams and Hancock. There also were other riders that Revere and Dawes would tell along the way. They would pass the warning on to other locations. There was one other warning system that Paul Revere put in place just in case none of the riders made it. Robert Newman was to set lanterns in the steeple of the Old North Church to alert the colonists in Charleston. He would put one lantern if the British were coming by land and two if they were coming by sea. There is a famous phrase about this event "one if by land, two if by sea". It was during the night on April 18-19 in 1775 when the British began to move. They were coming to Lexington by the Charles River, or "by sea". Dr. Joseph Warren told Revere and Dawes the news and the riders set out. Revere was the first to arrive in Lexington. Dawes made it about half an hour later. There they warned John Hancock and Samuel Adams. They decided to ride toward Concord to warn the militia there. However, they were detained by British soldiers. They managed to escape and Paul Revere walked back to where John Hancock was staying so he could help Hancock and his family to escape Lexington. • He didn't yell "the British are coming!" as many stories say. He was trying to be quiet so he wouldn't get caught. • He wasn't famous during his lifetime. It wasn't until 1861, when Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the poem "Paul Revere's Ride", that his ride and life became famous. • He had at least 13 children with two wives. • The horse Revere rode during his famous ride was lent to him by a deacon of the Old North Church, John Larkin.

PECANS IN THE CEMETERY On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. “One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me,” said one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence. Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, “One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me…” He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along. “Come here quick,” said the boy, “you won’t believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls!” The man said, “Beat it kid, can’t you see it’s hard for me to walk.” When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery. Standing by the fence they heard, “One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me.” The old man whispered, “Boy, you’ve been tellin’ me the truth. Let’s see if we can see the Lord…?” Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. Flour....Who Knew?
Some time ago, I was cooking some corn and stuck my fork in the boiling water to see if the corn was ready. I missed and my hand went into the boiling water....!! A friend of mine, who was a Vietnam vet, came into the house, as I was screaming, & asked me if I had some plain old flour... I pulled out a bag and he stuck my hand in it. He told me to keep my hand in the flour for 10 minutes. He said, in Vietnam, there was a guy on fire and in their panic, they threw a bag of flour all over him to put the fire out...Well, it not only put the fire out, but he never even had a blister!!!! ... Long story short, I put my hand in the bag of flour for 10 mins, pulled it out and did not even have a red mark or a blister & absolutely NO PAIN. Now, I keep a bag of flour in the fridge and every time I burn myself. *Cold flour feels even better than room temperature flour. I use the flour and have never ever had even a red spot/burn mark, or a blister! I even burnt my tongue once, put the flour on it for about 10 minutes .... the pain was gone and no burn. Try it . . . Experience it when you have a burn. Keep a bag of flour in your fridge and you will be happy you did! Flour has heat absorbent property and also has a strong antioxidant property, thus it helps in burn patients if applied within 15 minutes.

Guidance From Above? A businessman was in big trouble. He had put everything into his business, and now it was failing. It was so bad he was even contemplating suicide. As a last resort he went to a priest and poured out his story of tears and woe. That will be your answer, That will tell you what to do.” A year later the businessman went back to the priest and brought his wife and children with him. The businessman pulled an envelope stuffed with money out of his pocket, gave it to the priest as a donation in thanks for his advice. Cats and Eye Disorders The following eye-related disorders are commonly seen in cats: •Conjunctivitis: One or both of your cat’s eyes will look red and swollen, and there may be discharge. •Third eyelid protrusion: If the third eyelid becomes visible or crosses your cat’s eye, he may have a wound or may be suffering from diarrhea, worms or a virus. •Keratitis: If your cat’s cornea becomes inflamed, the eye will look cloudy and watery. •Cataracts: This opacity on the eye is often seen in elderly and diabetic cats. •Glaucoma: The cornea becomes cloudy and the eye enlarges due to an increased pressure in the eyeball. •Bulging eye: Bulging can occur because of accident or trauma or an eye tumor. •Retinal disease: Partial or total vision loss can happen when light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye degenerate. •Watery eyes: The fur around your cat’s eyes may be stained with tears because of blocked tear ducts or an overproduction of tears. Treating Eye Conditions Many feline eye disorders can be treated with vet-prescribed drops or ointments—your vet will show you how to apply eye and ear drops at home. Preventing Eye Problems The best way to prevent eye conditions is to make sure your cat gets all her vaccinations and has thorough check-ups. Please examine her eyes regularly and consult a vet if you find any abnormalities. Eye conditions that are left untreated can lead to impaired sight or even blindness. Many pet birds love to take baths. Next bath time, try using a new plastic paint tray as a bathtub! The ribs on the bottom of the tray provide traction, and the tray's slope allow your pets to wade in the shallow water until they're ready to move into the deep end. Paint trays are cheap and easy to clean, and they also make great turtle pools (but don't tell your birds).

Does your dog's barking in the car drive you nuts? Try this trick: Every time your dog barks, close the windows (watch her head). She'll quickly learn that barking means no fresh air and no slobbery tongue flapping in the breeze. After a few car rides, you'll both be driving around in blissful silence. Stop Cats From Digging Holes Keep cats off indoor planter. Pine cones in an indoor planter will discourage cats from walking in the dirt and digging holes. The pine cones are uncomfortable to their feet. You can pour water directly over the cones and it won't hurt the plants. The plants also get plenty of air. Keep ants out of the water bowl In the summertime, a favorite destination for ants is often a pet's food bowl. Here's a simple way to keep them out of your dog or cat's food—set the dish in a pan of water. Not only does it keep the ants out of the pet food, but your pet can take a gulp of water from the pan whenever he or she needs a drink. Keep your bunny cool Hot summer days are tough on bunnies. Here's a great way to recycle plastic water bottles and keep your bunnies cool. Fill the bottles with water, freeze them solid and then set them out in the rabbit hutches. The bunnies love to laze against the bottles as the ice thaws. This works great with puppies, too.

Helpful Tips For Kids And Dogs Here’s a list of 10 helpful tips for you to teach your kiddos so that you can encourage them to best get along with the dogs they meet! 1. Always ask the permission of a dog’s owner before approaching or petting him! 2. Stay away from entering a backyard that has a dog in it. Canines can be protective of their property so if you’re going to visit a friend, make sure to use the front door. 3. If you see a loose dog, don’t approach or chase him! Especially if the pup is trying to get away from you, please leave him alone. Tell your parents, neighbors, and other adults you trust about the loose dog so that they can help. 4. Never surprise or suddenly stir a sleeping dog. If your doggie or someone else’s dog is resting, let him catch some zzz’s and gently wake him up without scaring him. 5. Don’t tease dogs with food or toys because this can entice them to use their mouth! Especially don’t tease a dog that’s behind a fence or a gate, and please don’t reach in to pet him. 6. Stay away from any group of strange dogs. It’s best not to stand in the middle of a bunch of pups and steer clear of any fighting that may occur. Please don’t try to break up a fight! Instead, find the nearest adult to help. 7. If there’s a pooch eating or chewing on a bone, it’s best to leave him alone. Please don’t try to grab the food or toy, and you don’t even need to touch the dog at that time. Let him enjoy his goodies first and then you can snuggle with him. Remember that dogs aren’t toys so there will be times when they don’t feel like playing. 8. When you meet a new dog or are spending time with a pup who you don’t know well, avoid making direct eye contact or staring. Turn your eyes and look from the side to let them know you come in peace. Also, please don’t put your face close to a strange dog’s face. 9. Try not to run, shriek, scream or make big fusses around pups that you don’t know well! It could make them nervous or afraid which can affect their behavior towards you. 10. Last but not least, if you see a stray dog do not run toward or away from him. Calmly walk to a safe place and try to ignore the pooch. Please tell adults immediately and let them handle finding the dog’s owners or trying to help him off the streets. Try to avoid panicking, and just slowly walk to a safe spot.
