When I was young, most parents didn’t have the money to give their kids for entertainment purposes. So, we had to earn our own money to go to the show or to the dance in town. We also had to get a ride there and back because they didn’t run you to town and back then, either. Me and my friend, Carolyn Hawn, had to think of some really creative ways to earn money every Saturday. So, we would walk up and down the road, looking for Coke bottles so we could take them to Scandlyn’s Store and get the deposit off them. The Coke bottles were worth 2 cents each. It cost 50 cents to get in the show, so we had to find 50 of them to have enough for us both to go. One Saturday, we got a wheel barrel to load the bottles in. We had to take to Scandlyn’s Store on Highway 61 north of Harriman. The Legend of Sprinkles the Killer Clown The Legend of Sprinkles the Killer Clown is making its rounds again. For those unaware, here is the legend: (According to the Internet)
In 1973, a caravan of circus performers were making their way across the Appalachian Mountains. It was not a busy part of the circus season, and a bad winter storm had set in. As they rounded the many turns coming down the top of the mountain, the icy roads finally got the best of the caravan and several cars found their way off the road and over the hill. One of those vehicles, carrying 4 clowns, was never discovered. Several weeks later, 2 of the 4 clown performers were found walking down from the mountain with only their pants on. They drastically needed medical attention. Frost bite from the snow storm robbed them of many of their digits on their hands and feet. After months receiving care, the local police were able to question the whereabouts of the other two performers from the wreck. Their story was grim. The third guy had died instantly from the wreck. The fourth entertainer, known as Sprinkles, used the dead body to feed the rest of them. He kept them tied up like hostages in the wreckage. It wasn't until one of the survivors got his hands free to take the upper hand on Sprinkles long enough, that they made their escape. They left Sprinkles laying in an ice cold stream. They assumed that the waters temperature was enough to end his life. But according to pictures taken recently on a trail cam in Eastern Kentucky, Sprinkles could very well still be alive and out to terrorize more people. What's your thoughts?
What venom is used in prescription painkillers?
The cone snail contains a venom that has been used to generate painkillers. On its own, the venom is incredibly deadly and is capable of instantly paralyzing one of this small animal's victims, including humans. However, when properly processed, components of this venom can be used to generate medication that numbs pain receptors. Painkillers made from the cone snail's venom have been available to medical patients in the United States since 2004. According to National Geographic, these painkillers are not only more powerful than morphine but also pose none of the risk of addiction caused by that drug.

Stars Who Gave Up Their Kids For Adoption Roseanne Barr - Gave up her baby for adoption at the age of 18, in 1971. She initially hoped to keep the baby but realized that she didn't have the money to care for a child. While she was pregnant she lived in a Salvation Army home for unwed mothers. She was reunited with her daughter, Brandi Brown, 17 years later when the girl was discovered by a tabloid. Duane Lee Chapman AKA "Dog the Bounty Hunter" - When Chapman was a teen, his girlfriend had a baby without ever telling him she was pregnant. She committed suicide soon after the birth and the baby was given up for adoption. Chapman didn't learn that he had a son, Christopher Hecht, until his son was an adult. Ted Nugent - Gun-loving NRA spokesman Ted Nugent gave up his son Ted for adoption in 1968 after his girlfriend became accidentally pregnant. Father and son were reunited in 2010, along with another child whom Ted had given up for adoption, a daughter named Louisa. Albert Einstein - His first daughter with his wife Mileva Mari, named Lieserl, was born out of wedlock in 1902. She is believed to have been put up for adoption because of the shame of an illegitimate child. Either that, or she died from scarlet fever. Hank Williams, Sr. - His daughter Jett was born out of wedlock five days after Hank died from heart failure at the age of 29. She was legally adopted by Hank's mom Lillian Stone, who died when Jett was 2 years old. Jett was then adopted by another Alabama family. Clark Gable – His girlfriend Loretta Young became pregnant in 1935, and they placed the baby in an orphanage. Young then returned and adopted the baby 19 months later but Gable would never acknowledge that he was the father. Rod Stewart - Rod Stewart has had a less-than-great relationship with the first of his eight children, a daughter named Sarah whom he fathered at age 17. The little girl's mom, Samantha Boffey, gave the baby up for adoption. Sarah reconnected with her dad in the 1980s but they didn't become close until meeting again in 2007. Andy Kaufman - Comedian Andy Kaufman gave his daughter up for adoption when his high school girlfriend fell pregnant. Kaufman's daughter Maria Colonna only learned who her biological father was after his death in 1984. Lucille Ball - In 2014, a woman named Cassandria Carlson claimed that her grandmother was Lucille Ball. Carlson claimed that Ball had given up her daughter (Cassandria's mom) for adoption in 1947. Strom Thurmond – The US Senator was a famous advocate of segregation between black and white Americans. After his death, it was revealed that he'd had a secret child with a black 16-year-old maid, Carrie Butler, who worked in his home. Thurmond's child, Essie Mae Washington-Williams, was adopted and raised by Butler's older sister and her husband, Mary and John Washington. Thurmon's mixed-race daughter Essie Mae kept her father's secret until after his death, when she came forward and was acknowledged by his "official" family. Chuck Norris – He was married to Dianne Holechek when he fathered a child with another woman in the 1960s. The baby girl, Dina, was raised believing that her biological father was the man her mom married after she was born. Chuck knew nothing about her until 1991. Then in 1991, Dina overheard her mom saying Chuck was her father. She reached out to him and Chuck eventually acknowledged her as his child. Arnold Schwarzenegger - It's well known that Arnold fathered an illegitimate child with his housekeeper, Mildred Baena, while Arnie was married to Maria Shriver. What's less well known is that the child, Joseph, was raised believing that his biological father was Mildred Baena's husband at the time of his conception. So Arnie essentially gave up his son to be claimed by another man for 13 years, before the scandalous truth was revealed.

This was determined based on U.S. birth data collected between 1990 and 2006 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The article claims that this data is part of a larger historical trend in which the late-summer months of July, August and September see higher birth rates. The Livescience.com article also presents a CDC health statistics demographer's theory concerning the matter. The demographer suggests that temperature decreases in the winter leads to people spending a larger amount of time indoors, increasing the likelihood of conception and leading to a late summer birth.

Under their direction Women of a Different Caliber will be hosting Girls just want to have fun. This is being held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month starting in June! This is a letter written by a man who was helped by one of our local officers I have held down many kinds of jobs as an immigrant in America from insurance to working as a detailing technician at a car wash, care giver, semi professional foolish dancer, professional student (if you've not heard of any before) freelance writer and even being a cab driver. I'm not proud, I will do anything to make money as long as it's not illegal. As I was rummaging through a maze of old pictures, I found this spectacular picture. It was about two years ago, before I become rich and before I changed careers to real estate lol. I was a part time cab driver. As I was on a long distance dispatch my taxi had a flat tire on a country road and I had one of the nicest and kindest police officers come to my aid . This great officer went down under my car to retrieve my spare tire and helped me fix my car (dirtying himself in the process) so I can get to my destination on time and safely. At a time of perceived strained race relations between police and young black men and all police men in uniform seen as trigger happy cops ready to take black lives, you have great cops like this officer going above and beyond to help people regardless of race, religion and national origin. Bible Beat The Dead Church
A new Pastor in a small town spent days visiting each church member, inviting them to come to his first service. The next Sunday the church was almost empty. The Pastor placed an ad in the local newspaper, stating that, because the church was dead, it was their duty to give it a decent Christian burial. The funeral will be held Sunday. Curious, a large crowd turned out for the "funeral." In front of the pulpit, they saw a closed coffin. The pastor delivered the eulogy, he opened the coffin and invited his congregation to come forward and pay their final respects to their dead church. Curiously, all the people lined up to look in the coffin. Each mourner peeped, then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look. In the coffin, tilted at the correct angle, was a large mirror.

There is plenty of trivia associated with the month of October, including the celebration of Columbus Day on the 12th and Hallow- According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there are 5,000 planes flying een on the 31st. October is also designated the awareness month for many health-related causes, including breast cancer, lupus, eczema and spina bifida. October is also dedicated as the apple, caramel, dessert, pasta and pizza month. October has 31 days and the birth stones associated with this month are pink tourmaline and opal. The month's flower is the calendula, and its zodiac signs are Libra and Scorpio. Some other important events that occurred in October include the launching of Sputnik 1 by the Russians in 1957, the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, the beheading of Marie Antoinette in 1793 and the landing of the Mayflower at Plymouth Rock in 1620. In baseball, the World Series usually takes place in this month as well.

Use Kool-Aid to clean dishwasher pipes. Just put in the detergent section and run a cycle, it will also clean a toilet.
Preserving a newspaper clipping - large bottle of club soda and cup of milk of magnesia. Soak for 20 minutes and let dry, will last for many years. To remove wax - Take a paper towel and iron it over the wax stain, it will absorb into the towel. To remove anything sticky like tape residue nail polish remover will sometimes work or buy Goo Be Gone or Goo Gone. I have used this to remove a multitude of sticky things. Remove labels off glassware, etc., rub with peanut butter or Goo Gone. Crayon on the wall - Colgate toothpaste and brush it. Dirty grout - Use Listerine. Stains on clothes – Rub in Colgate toothpaste, then rinse. Grease stains – Try Coca-Cola and it will also remove grease stains from the driveway overnight. It will remove corrosion from car batteries To keep fresh flowers longer, add a little Clorox or 2 aspirin, or just use 7-up instead of water. When washing and drying kids sleepwear or any other clothing that is flame-retardant do not use softener or dryer sheets, it removes the retardant. This is an old time home remedy, keep a bottle of Witch Hazel on hand along with a package of cosmetic pads. When your little one falls and bumps their head, soak a cosmetic pad with Witch Hazel and place it on the bump. It will take the swelling down and help prevent bruising. Witch Hazel is located on the first aid aisle usually near the rubbing alcohol.

Fall is in the air.... Here’s your recipes!
Autumn vegetable soup with cheesy toasts 1 leek, chopped quite small 2 carrots, chopped quite small For the toasts 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 8 slices of baguette, cut on the diagonal 1 potato, chopped quite small 1 garlic clove, cut in half 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh rosemary 50g edam, finely grated ½ tsp sugar 410g can chickpea, drained/rinsed 3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 2 x 400g cans chopped Italian tomato 425ml/¾ pint vegetable stock Put the vegetables into a large saucepan with the garlic, rosemary, stock and sugar. Season well, stir, bring to a simmer and cover. Cook gently for 15 minutes or until the vegetables are just tender. Preheat the grill to high. Whizz the tomatoes in a food processor or blender until smooth, then tip into the vegetables with the chickpeas and parsley. Gently heat through, stirring now and then. For the toasts: rub both sides of the bread with the garlic. Grill on one side until golden, turn the bread over, cover with edam and grill until it’s bubbling. Serve at once with the piping hot soup.
Gourmet Sweet Potato Souffle 3 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and diced 1 tablespoon white sugar 1/2 cup butter, melted 3/4 cup white sugar 1 cup heavy cream
5 eggs 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon salt
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil over medium-high heat. Add sweet potatoes, cover, and cook until soft, about 10 minutes. Drain, and set aside. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease a 2 quart souffle dish. Sprinkle dish with 1 tablespoon white sugar, shaking dish to evenly coat bottom and sides. Place the sweet potatoes into the bowl of a food processor. Add the butter, 3/4 cup sugar, heavy cream, eggs, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt. Process until mixture is smooth. Pour into prepared souffle dish. Bake the sweet potato mixture in preheated oven for 20 minutes. Lower oven temperature to 350 degrees. Bake the sweet potato mixture until edges are slightly browned, about 40 minutes more. Serve warm or at room temperature.
How come lemon cleaners contains real lemons, but lemon juice contains artificial flavorings.
Tip: Put plastic shower curtain and liners into the washing machine to eliminate grime. Toss in a bath towel or two for scrubbing action, along with the usual amount of detergent. Then place in the dryer for a couple of minutes or hang to dry. Here’s hint from my mother: To stop mildew buildup, use pinking shears to cut off the bottom seam of a liner or a non-decorative plastic curtain, so the water drips off.

That Yucky Bathroom!
Scrub porcelain enamel bath tubs and sinks with the home brewed all purpose cleaner, or a solution of hot water and a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent. Both mixtures will easily clean the fixtures. without scratching the shiny finish. Always rinse the tub after taking a bath. If you can somehow coax, bribe or threaten your family to do likewise, the chore of cleaning the bathtub will be much easier, and you won't have to do it as often. If you have a new bathtub, it may be plastic or acrylic. You need to be extra careful when cleaning these types of tubs. Always use a mild cleaner, such as the all purpose bath cleaner or a dishwashing liquid (but not dishwasher soap) does a good job of making bubbles and cleaning the tub at the same time. Just don't tell the kids that they are helping to clean the tub; let them think you are doing them a big favor by letting them take a bubble bath. To keep your soap bars from melting into a soggy mess that you'll have to clean up, place a sponge under the bar of soap. Then use the sponge to wash yourself or clean the inside of the tub. This will help keep the area neat, and you will actually use most of the melted soap instead of washing the soapy mess down the drain. You can get rid of a stubborn bathtub ring with a paste of cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide. Take 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar and add hydrogen peroxide drop by drop until you have a paste. Apply the paste to the ring and let it dry. When you come back to wipe off the paste, the ugly bathtub ring will disappear, too. To clean the shower walls and floor, use a bucket of all purpose bath cleaner or the heavy duty cleaner. I like to take a cleaning brush and dip it into the cleaning solution. Then brush down the wet shower walls and floor with the cleaner. Leave it on the walls and floor for a few minutes before rinsing off with clean water. The metal frames of shower doors can get water spots on them that seem impossible to remove. Lemon oil removes those tough water spots. Apply a little oil to a rag, and rub over the metal. Use a dry cloth to buff the metal to a shine. The oil will help repel water and will make it tougher for new water spots to form. Glass shower doors will sparkle and stay clean if you wipe them down once a week with a sponge dipped into full strength white vinegar. You can also clean out shower door tracks with a toothbrush or cotton swab dipped into a solution of bleach and water.

How do you clean an LED TV screen?

1. Turn the TV off Switch the LED TV off before you start cleaning it. It is easier to see dust and spots on a dark television screen. 2. Dust the screen Rub the screen very gently with a dry microfiber cloth to remove all dust. Use only the minimum amount of pressure necessary to remove the dust. LED screens scratch easily, and portions of the screen may burn out if you apply too much pressure. 3. Rub the screen with a vinegar-water solution Dampen the microfiber cloth with a mixture containing equal parts of distilled water and distilled white vinegar. The vinegar keeps the water from streaking as it dries. Gently rub the screen in a circular motion to remove all spots, and avoid vigorous scrubbing. Do not over wet the screen, and pay close attention to the edges of the screen to make sure liquid does not seep into the TV. 4. Dry the screen Thoroughly dry the screen with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
Use 20 Mule Team Borax to wash baby clothes, if clothing is stained soak them for 30 minutes in 20 Mule Team Borax, then put them through the wash cycle.

Use a plastic shower curtain liner to cover the mattress on kids beds to prevent soiling in case of an accident. Do not put grease down garbage disposals, as it may cause blockage. Grease can also remain in disposal or pipes and cause odors. To clean pots, pans, or casserole dishes that have brunt on food, place a couple of dryer sheets in them and fill with hot water let it soak for a few hours. Then wash and rinse. Lemon juice and salt make a good copper and brass cleaner. Sprinkle with salt rub with lemon juice. Keep a bottle of Dawn original blue dish detergent on hand, it's a great degreaser as well as a spot remover. Cosmetology schools are great money savers for haircuts and hair coloring. Some even offer nails and pedicures. Students do the work and are supervised by certified teachers, to insure that the work is done correctly. If your dryer seems to take longer to dry the clothes then it used too, remove the screen filter and scrub both sides with a soft brush in warm soapy water (an old toothbrush works well). Then rinse thoroughly and dry, before putting back in dryer. This will also help your heating element last longer. Repeat as necessary. Clean wood laminate floors. Sweep up the loose stuff first. Then, add two to four tablespoons of vinegar to a small bucket of warm water. Wet two terry cloths in the solution, wring them out, and lay them flat on the floor. Step on the cloths and walk across the floor in sweeping motions and scrubbing with your toes where necessary. Let it air dry or walk on microfiber towels. Clean grill racks. Heat up the grill until it’s super hot to make it easier to scrap off the clumps. Cut an onion in half and attach the round end of a half-onion to a fork. Point the flat side of the onion face down and rub the grate. 1/2 lemon sprinkled with table salt can be used safely to clean or remove stains from granite. For stains leave lemon and salt on stain to soak, then rinse with clean water and dry. To clean grease off kitchen cabinets mix 1 quart of hot water and 1/2 cup of lemon juice, dampen sponge with mixture and wipe over cabinets.

What is the connection between the Bermuda Triangle and Amelia Earhart? There is no connection between the Bermuda Triangle and Amelia Earhart. The Bermuda Triangle is an area of the Atlantic Ocean where airplanes have mysteriously disappeared. Amelia Earhart was an American pilot who disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean. Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean solo. Then in 1937, she attempted to become the first woman to make a solo flight around the world. While flying over the Pacific Ocean, Earhart radioed that she was running low on fuel and could not see the landing strip. Her plane went down, but neither Earhart nor the plane were ever found. What happened to Earhart remains a mystery to this day. Some people mistakenly believe that Amelia Earhart disappeared in what is known as "The Bermuda Triangle," an area of the Atlantic Ocean approximately outlined by drawing a triangle between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. Over the years, ships and planes have disappeared while crossing through that area. One of the most famous disappearances happened in 1945, when five Navy torpedo bombers disappeared during a training exercise more than 100 miles off the coast of Florida. When a search and rescue plane was sent to look for them, it too disappeared. None of the planes were ever found.

How many bugs do you eat while sleeping?
As of 2014, there have been no conclusive studies conducted that determine how many insects are swallowed by humans. The actual probability of a person swallowing an insect while asleep is low, as most insects view humans as predators and do their best to avoid them. For a person to actually swallow an insect while sleeping, a number of circumstances must occur at once. The insect would have to be on or around the person's bed. Next, the insect would have to enter a person's mouth. Insects naturally fear predators larger than themselves, so it would be odd for them to enter a human mouth. Lastly, the person who has an insect in his mouth would have to swallow said insect. Somehow, the insect would have to trigger a person's swallowing reflex, which would be incredibly hard to do while the person is sleeping. These circumstances alone would be rare to achieve and make it almost impossible for a person to swallow a bug while sleeping.

Unfreezing a computer mouse For a wired or wireless mouse, unplug the USB cable, or plug and reconnect it to correct the problem. Unfreeze a laptop mouse by enabling the touch-pad. To do this, you will use the Fn key and the Touch-pad key. 1. Locate the Fn key Find the Fn key located between the Alt and Ctrl keys at the bottom left of your laptop keyboard. Press and hold the Fn key. 2. Look for the touch-pad icon The touch-pad icon is located on different keys depending on the laptop you are using. The touch-pad icon looks like a touch-pad with a division slash across it. Usually, this touch-pad icon is located on the F7 or F9 keys. With Fn key still pressed, press the Touch-pad key. 3. Test the mouse Place your finger on the touch-pad, and try moving the cursor around. If the cursor moves, then you have fixed the problem. If not, then you have to do Step 1 and 2 a few more times to attempt to reset the pad. 4. Restart the computer If the mouse still does not work, restart the computer by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete combination. Sometimes, a simple reboot clears any glitches that can occur and restores the computer to its normal operation.

Although there is no conclusive proof as of 2014, scientists have a number of theories as to why 10 percent of the world's population are left-handed. Evidence points to many genes, responsible for the development of asymmetry in the human body, as causing left-hand dominance. The gene PCSK6 is one such responsible for handedness development, as explained in a research paper published in PLOS Genetics in September 2013. The gene is not solely responsible, however, and more research is needed to understand the subtle genetic traits required for left-handedness. One other common theory regarding left-handedness is in how the brain divides tasks between hemispheres. In right-handed people, speech and hand dominance have a high correlation in the left hemisphere of the brain, while in left-handed people the correlation is less significant.

9th Annual October Sky Festival Arrowhead Park in Oliver Springs will be the location for the 9th Annual October Sky Festival and Heritage at the Depot on October 15th, 10am til 5pm. The historic Depot/Library & Archives and the Museum Project will also be open for tours. The festival is hosted by the Oliver Springs Historical Society as a fund raiser for their museum project. There will be ‘Narrated Tour’ of the Movie and local historic homes conducted by society members. In addition the Arts Council of Roane County will showcase a variety of talented artists. The Writers Guild of Anderson County will feature authors with local and regional stories, fiction and non-fiction, and children’s books. This year The Manhattan Project National Park will have a booth and will be sharing their progress in this important local venue. The day will be filled with talented musicians like Jerry DeMaria from Pittsburgh PA who performs an uncanny rendition of the ever popular, Frank Sinatra. Following his performance Sarah Hepler and Tre Jackson will share popular music which should appeal to young people. Noted Elvis impersonator, Greg Johnson and friends are scheduled to appear again, Greg is a hometown talent that performs regularly in Pigeon Forge. It is with pride that we have learned that Oliver Springs’ own Janelle Arthur has landed a leading role in a movie being filmed in Texas. We hope that she has completed filming in time to perform for us. Ben Briley country singer from Nashville another finalist on American Idol will be performing in the afternoon. Dudley Evans and ‘Victorious’ singing their Gospel favorites, round will out the day. The Cruise-in-Car Show is in its second year and proved to be a favorite with both dads and kids. Completing the festival will be 100 plus vendors and exhibits and a kid’s zone. Volunteers are welcome, shifts will only be 2 hours, please call if you can help. Kayden is home! Thank you so much for your help and prayers. Please continue to pray for Baby Kayden to defeat his cancerous brain tumor.
Kayden Christopher is at home, but must visit the St. Judes affiliate in Johnson City monthly, and St. Judes in Memphis every three months. He is receiving his chemo orally and is presently doing good. The latest MRI shows the tumor has shrunk even more. The tumor is still inoperable, and he has lost some of his hearing because of the chemo. He will receive his hearing aides in October. The ones who were more creative and better at finding the right balance between engines, aerodynamics, intake—these were the ones that won. Sandra L. Madden Dedicates Race to Fallen Officer by: John Griffin After qualifying on Saturday evening on August 27th it was Billy Ogle Jr of Knoxville TN, in the Vanover car setting fast time. In the 40 lap Southern National Bonus Series it was Ogle leading for the first 2 laps until Chris Madden of Gray Court, South Carolina took the lead and went on to win the 40 lap feature. In victory lane Madden dedicated the win to Maryville police officer Kenny Moats, who lost his life answering a call. Madden was followed by Donald McIntosh in 2nd, Rick Weiss in 3rd, Billy Ogle 4th, Derek Ellis 5th, Mike Marlar 6th, and Ray Cook 7th. In the Sportsman feature it was Michael Courtney taking the feature win and also collecting a $400 bonus from Food City. Zack Shannon finished 2nd , Jed Emert 3rd, Kyle Courtney 4th, and Jaylon Shannon 5th. In the Street Stock feature it was Chris Rickett taking the checkers with Austin Neeley 2nd, Robbie Comer 3rd, Dale Watson 4th, and Skip Henry 5th. The next race took place on September 17th with the Southern All Stars paying $5,000.00 to win. It was also the Hall of Fame race. The 2016 class is Jimmie Monroe, Danny Glass, and Bud Lunsford and also Harley “Fuzzy” Orange who now lives in Sunbright, TN was inducted along with Paul Lewis of the Asphalt Era going in.
It seems to be as much a part of the sport as sponsors and that is not likely to change.

Although the prison is now closed off and guarded at the security gate, it's still a terrifying place to see from the road right outside the city of Nashville. Who knows what ghosts haunt the halls, but some say they can hear the screams of the men when the night grows late. Cue all the shivers... 1880 Newbury House: Rugby Intended to be a utopian community, the Rugby colony was the brain child of Thomas Hughes. Hughes, born in 1880 in Berkshire, England, first visited the United States in the 1870s while on a speaking tour encouraging the healing of the rift left after the American Civil War. Seeing the grand opportunities available, he returned home to bring his sons back with him to create a community in which the younger sons of Britain could build a strong, agricultural community, while maintaining a Christian lifestyle, free of the class distinctions in their homeland. At first, the community flourished, playing home to over 300 residents living in some 70 Victorian-style homes. Unfortunately, the transition would be much more difficult than Hughes could have imagined. Following a typhoid outbreak, the community began to falter until 1900, when the majority of the residents fled the grounds. The remaining community members worked to keep the Rugby dream alive, and in 1966 formed Historic Rugby. With so much death, hauntings should be expected. Guests staying in the Newbury House, particularly in room 2, say they are often awakened by a ghostly male figure standing over them, especially single female guests. Rumor has it the man is Mr. Oldfield, a gentleman who was sent to report on the Rugby colony’s progress in the 1880s. He fell in love with the area and sent for his family, but fell ill and died before they arrived. Take your chances staying in the halls of these beautiful houses, but don’t be surprised if you have a visitor in the night.

Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave. Coffee filters make excellent covers.... 2. Clean windows, mirrors, and chrome... Coffee filters are lint-free so they'll leave windows sparkling. 3. Protect China by separating your good dishes with a coffee filter between each dish. 4. Filter broken cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening a wine bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter. 5. Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust. 6. Apply shoe polish. Ball up a lint-free coffee filter. 7. Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter. 8. Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale. 9. Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods. 10. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. A famous art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store. He does a double take. He knows that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the store and offers to buy the cat for two dollars. What is a planetarium? A planetarium is a facility designed to replicate the features of the universe in the night sky. Similar to a museum or science center, planetariums are developed in communities to offer education and entertainment to people curious about the field of astronomy. Visitors typically pay admission fees to enter just as they would at a theater or zoo. A standard planetarium room has a projection of the night sky on a dome ceiling. Visitors sit in theater-style seating below and look up at the projection. In some rooms, the images are static. In others, movement takes place to replicate movement of the moon, stars and planets in the sky. Some science centers have planetarium rooms where films about the universe are displayed on the dome ceiling for people to watch. Some large planetariums have telescopes for guests to use to detect more intricate details of the universe and smaller stars in the sky. Multimedia technology making use of sound and lights is also used to deliver live presentations on different astronomical topics. People can visit at different days and times to learn about different elements of the sky. Elementary schools in some communities schedule planetarium field trip visits for some students as part of their curriculum.

According to Orkin, stink bugs do not typically bite people. Even so, they are often considered pests because they feed on both ornamental plants, garden produce and crops. In addition, they sometimes find shelter inside houses for the winter, living inside walls or crawl spaces. Indoor-living stinkbugs come out of hiding as spring arrives. Homeowners often find them disturbing because of their size. Their bodies grow to be about 2 centimeters both in length and width. In addition, their legs reach out even farther from their bodies. As their name suggests, when in danger, stink bugs emit a foul smell from an abdominal gland.

Some historical tests to determine if you were a witch During the times when Puritans believed there were witches among them, tests such as the swimming test were given, according to History.com. Another test dealt with the idea that witches were unable to speak the holy scripture aloud. Looking for witch's marks was also common. Swimming a witch involved tying up the accused and dropping her into the nearest and deepest body of water; if she floated, she was allegedly a witch. If she sank, she was innocent. Despite the ropes that were tied around the accused witches to pull them from the water if they did not float, some still drowned during the test. It was said that those afflicted with witchcraft were unable to say religious scriptures, verses, psalms or even the Lord's name aloud, particularly without making mistakes. Many assumed any mistake was a sign of witchcraft, not taking into account the nerves of the accused or the possibility that the accused was illiterate. Witch's marks were supposed to have been put on the accused person's body when she made a pact with the Devil. To test for this, the accused was stripped and publicly examined for the purpose of finding the Devil's mark or witch's teat, as they were called, despite the fact that they were often just blemishes, scars, birthmarks or sores. These marks were believed to be numb and did not produce pain.

Mermaids are legendary fictional creatures said to live in the oceans of the world. They are characterized by having the upper body of a female human and the lower body of a fish. Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures, specifically amongst sailors and residents of coastal towns. The first known mermaid stories originated in Assyria around the year 1000 B.C. According to legend, the Goddess Atargatis fell in love with a mortal man and accidentally killed him. Heartbroken, she hurled herself into a lake and took the form of a fish. However, her beauty could not be concealed, leaving her top half human. Most mermaid sightings today are either hoaxes or the sighting of sea mammals, such as manatees and dugongs.

Taking care of a new tattoo
Most tattoo artists cover new tattoos with plastic wrap to protect them from air-born bacteria. After an hour, the plastic wrap is removed and the tattoo rinsed with lukewarm (not hot) water without rubbing. Antibacterial soap can be used. This removes blood, excess ink and whatever ointment the tattoo artist applied. The tattoo should be patted dry with a fresh paper towel. Tattoo experts have differing opinions about which ointment should be applied over a fresh tattoo to keep it protected. Some suggest A&D Ointment, a baby rash treatment. Others suggest specialty ointments such as Tattoo Goo. Aquaphor Healing Ointment is another option. Apply the ointment as a thin layer over the tattoo for a week. As the tattoo heels, the skin will first start peeling. The peels cannot be pulled as the ink may also come off. After four days, the tattoo can be lightly rubbed with a clean washcloth to loosen the peeling skin. Eventually the tattoo will scab over. At this time, ointment is no longer necessary, and the skin should be kept moist with gentle, fragrance-free lotion. Tattoos don't heal fully for up to 6 months. During that time, they should not be exposed to the sun.

That's before the United States was even a country, and more than 100 years before Mardi Gras celebrations became a tradition in New Orleans, where the first recorded Mardi Gras parade was held in 1837. In fact, the City of Mobile claims that its citizens are responsible for helping the citizens of New Orleans incorporate parade floats into their celebrations in 1857.

Why can't we see stars during the day? Most stars cannot be seen during daylight hours because light from the sun is brighter than the relatively faint light from the other stars. This is largely a result of the Earth's atmosphere scattering the sun's light so that every point in the sky seems brighter than distant stars. The atmosphere's role in scattering sunlight can be seen from Earth's orbit and the moon's surface. In these airless locations, the stars can be seen once the observer is shielded from both the direct light of the sun and the glare from the Earth. From the moon, stars can be seen even when the sun is at the peak of the sky as long as the observer is in the shade.

Aliens Among Us?
As of 2014, there is no single piece of concrete evidence to prove the existence of alien life, although most scientists today agree that the potential of discovering life outside Earth is much greater than previously thought. According to Discovery News, alien life is considered highly probable and will likely be discovered by the year 2024. Fictional accounts of aliens found in mainstream media aren't considered an accurate representation of alien life. Some scientists believe that aliens will be simple life forms such as bacteria or single celled organisms while others believe that more complex forms of life exist. Within the Milky Way galaxy, there are several planets that may be able to support some type of life. NBC News has stated that over half of the galaxies visible from Earth's telescopes may have planets and solar systems similar to our own. Scientists often determine the probability of alien life by examining the availability of water on other planets. Currently, there are several planets that are thought to have some form of water available, including Mars and Titan, one of Saturn's moons. The debate of whether alien life exists is hinged on the lack of definite proof of other species outside Earth. According to New Scientist, there are some examples that point to irrefutable evidence. For example, methane has been found on Mars. The presence of methane is linked to the metabolic process that occurs when life forms process organic compounds for energy. This evidence is controversial and has only been accepted as proof of alien life by a portion of scientists.

Is Bigfoot real? According to Fox News, there is little scientific evidence that Bigfoot actually exists. Despite extensive hunting efforts and eyewitness testimony, the determination of Bigfoot's existence is still inconclusive. According to The Huffington Post, DNA testing indicates the presence of an unknown ape with Homo sapien traits. These DNA samples have been collected from various Bigfoot sightings. Since there is no Bigfoot DNA to compare the findings, however, the testing remains inconclusive until definitive proof of Bigfoot DNA exists. Some skeptics believe that the DNA samples have been contaminated. One theory is that Bigfoot is actually a variant of the Gigantopithecus, a primate that stood nine feet tall and went extinct 100,000 years ago. Another theory is that the Gigantopithecus of East Asia reached North America.

What is the bright light in the evening western sky? The planet Venus becomes visible in the west just after sunset and is the third brightest natural object in the night sky. Venus is covered by thick clouds that reflect more than 70 percent of the sunlight that reaches the planet. The second planet from the sun, Venus, shares many of the same physical characteristics as Earth. When viewed from Earth, Venus is typically visible for only a few hours either just after sunset or before sunrise. Venus is the brightest planet in the solar system, and the sun and moon are the only objects in the night's sky able to outshine Venus. Venus is much closer to the sun than Earth and appears just above the horizon in the western sky at sunset and in the eastern sky just before sunrise. Venus remains close to the horizon due to its close proximity to the sun. Venus is most easily observed during an elongation, an event that occurs when the planet is in a position within its orbit that is at tangent to the view from Earth. While Venus is often clearly visible to the naked eye and is bright enough to cast shadows, planetary features can only be made out with the aid of a telescope or other viewing aid.

Rubbing a scratched lens gently in circular motions with a small amount of non-abrasive toothpaste on a wool cloth is useful to wipe away light scratches. The glass should be cleaned with cool water and then dried. Making a paste of water and baking soda is an alternative way to remove scratches. Some other ways to remove scratches are to use a dab of brass or silver polish on a cotton ball to gently rub onto the affected glass. An application of vehicle wax can also work for this same purpose. Glass etching compound is useful for plastic glasses because it removes its outer layer; however, this method is not for use on eyeglasses.

Why the Empire State Building Was Built John Jacob Rascob built the Empire State Building because he was competing with other entrepreneurs to construct the tallest skyscraper in the world. His main competitor was Walter Chrysler, who was attempting to build the world's tallest building in New York City at the same time. The French completion of the Eiffel Tower in 1889, at 984 feet, spurred American architects to outdo each other to construct the world's tallest skyscraper. In 1909, the Metropolitan Life Tower reached 700 feet and 50 stories. In 1913, the Woolworth building reached 792 feet and 57 stories. After the Bank of Manhattan building reached 927 feet and 71 stories in 1929, Walter Chrysler and John Jacob Rascob joined the fray. Each kept the details of the height of his building from the other. In the end, the Chrysler Building topped off at 1,046 feet, while the Empire State Building, at 1,250 feet and 102 stories, became the world's tallest skyscraper, a record it held until 1972, when the World Trade Center was completed. In 2009, when the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai was finished, it became the world's tallest building at 2,722 feet. To build the Empire State Building, Rascob first bought the old Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, and demolished that building to use the site. In the race to be first and tallest, the Empire State Building was constructed in only one year and 45 days, and its cost was almost $10 million less than its $50 million budget. On the opening day, May 1, 1931, President Herbert Hoover symbolically lit up the Empire State Building from the White House by pushing a button. Why do overalls have belt loops, since they are held up at the top by the straps?

“I didn’t think you were coming.” Megan narrowed her eyes at Caleb as he approached her. She was sitting on the steps of her Papaw’s front porch. “I thought you were standing me up for the second time in a row.” Caleb could feel the blush rising in his cheeks. “I’m sorry about last time. Robbie had something bad.” Megan grinned and hopped up. “I’m just teasing. Is he better? Where is he?” Caleb was relieved her irritation was feigned, and he felt a little more confident as he said, “He’s meeting us at the tracks.” “What are we waiting for then?” Megan grabbed Caleb’s elbow and pulled him toward the road. Caleb’s skin tingled under her fingertips, and he fought another blush. He was disappointed when she let her hand drop from his arm. “It’s awful hot today.” Megan grinned. “Your accent is so cute.” Caleb’s face burned, as he said, “What accent?” “Your country accent.” Megan glanced over at him, and giggled. “Why are you blushing?” Caleb wanted to turn around and run away. He could feel the tips of his ears burning scarlet. “I don’t have an accent,” he protested. “Yes, you do.” Megan smiled at him. “I like it.” Caleb didn’t know what to say, so he walked beside her in silence, concentrating on getting himself under control. He hated the way he blushed around girls. Especially Megan. She seemed so sophisticated compared to him. So sure of herself. As the pair reached the end of Montgomery Street, they could see Robbie pedaling his dirt bike toward them. “Hey!” Robbie called to them. “Hey, man.” Caleb waved at his friend as he skidded to a stop in front of them. “This is Megan.” “Hi.” Megan smiled at Robbie. Caleb felt a surge of jealousy quicken his pulse. “Hi.” Robbie grinned. “Nice to meet you. Caleb has told me all about you.” Megan giggled. “He has? What’d he say?” Robbie cut his eyes toward Caleb, and then shrugged. “It’s hot. Let’s go swimming.” Caleb was grateful his friend hadn’t rat¬ted him out. His exact words had been, “She’s the hottest girl I’ve ever seen in Little River.” The three teenagers walked to the edge of Montgomery, and stepped into the woods. Robbie dropped his bike behind some bushes. There was a well-worn path between two oak trees, and they followed it down a hill. Megan stumbled on some loose pebbles, and Caleb offered her his hand. She took it, and he held it tightly as they half-way skidded to the bottom. At the bottom of the hill, the dense forest opened up where the railroad tracks ran parallel to the river. They walked on the tracks, balancing on the rails. “How far is it?” Megan asked. “’Bout a mile.” Caleb answered. “Are you liking living with your Papaw?” Robbie asked. Megan shrugged. “It’s okay. I’d rather be at home with my friends.” “Kinda sucks having to spend your summer out here, huh?” Robbie glanced over at her as they walked. “Yeah.” Megan sighed. “All my friends are doing all this great stuff without me.” Caleb didn’t want to let Robbie do all the talking, so he said, “I’m glad we got to meet you, though.” Megan tossed her long blonde hair over her shoulder, and smiled at him, “Me, too. It’s the only interesting thing that’s happened since I got here.” When they reached a bend in the tracks, Caleb said, “It’s down here.” Megan looked in the direction Caleb was pointing. “What?” “The swimming hole.” Again, the three of them skidded down an embankment. At the bottom, the trees thinned out on a small peninsula. One lone tree stood near the tip of the land, with a rope dangling from a thick limb that stretched over the slow moving river. “Cool!” Megan looked delighted. “It looks like a movie set.” Caleb gazed at the familiar surroundings and imagined seeing them through Megan’s eyes. He had been coming to the swimming hole his entire life. He couldn’t even remember the first time he saw it. His dad had taught him to swim here. His brothers had nearly drowned him here…on multiple occasions. Caleb and Robbie pulled their shirts over their heads and removed their socks and shoes. Clad only in swim trunks, Caleb was very aware of his thin torso. His brothers were all slim, but Caleb was the only one who hadn’t filled out. Robbie had yet to shed his baby fat, so Caleb hoped he at least looked good to Megan in comparison to the present company. As Robbie waded into the water and swam out to grab the end of the rope and pull it to shore, Caleb tried to watch Megan undress without being too obvious. She pulled her purple tank top off to reveal a different bikini top than the one he had seen on the day he met her. This one was lavender and navy blue diagonal stripes. Caleb had to stop watching when

she slid her jean shorts over her hips or risk embarrassing himself in front of her. Instead, he watched Robbie climb up into the tree. Years ago, someone had nailed small pieces of board into the tree, creating steps to a thick limb that grew horizontally, making a platform to stand on. “Is that safe?” Megan had one hand on her hip, and arched her right eyebrow in a very alluring way. “Sure.” Caleb nodded. “We do it all the time.” “Geronimo!” Robbie yelled as he jumped from the tree and swung out in a long ark, dropping into the green water with a splash. “It does look fun!” Megan grinned. “It is.” Caleb grinned back. “Want to go next?” Two hours later, the three friends lay on their backs on a patch of grass on the river bank, letting the hot sun dry their swimsuits. “This has been a lot of fun,” Megan said. “As fun as Nashville?” Robbie asked. “Sure,” she replied. “Nashville’s exciting when you go downtown to see a show or something, but most of the time it’s just like anywhere else.” Robbie stood up and said, “I’m going to take a walk.” As he retreated into the woods, Megan arched an eyebrow in an unspoken question. Caleb grinned, and said, “He has to pee.” “Ah.” Megan rested her head on her crossed arms, and watched Caleb. “What?” Caleb asked. “Nothing.” “Why are you staring at me.” “You’re cute.” Megan enjoyed teasing him. “Thanks,” Caleb paused and then said, “so are you.” Megan giggled. “Thanks.” “I’m glad you came with us today.” Caleb rolled to his side, and propped his head on his hand. “I hope you had fun.” “I did.” Megan smiled. “It took my mind off things.” “Things with your parents?” Megan nodded. “And other things.” “Like what?” “I miss my friends.” “Yeah. That sucks.” “I miss my mom a lot,” Megan confided. “I don’t understand how she can just send me off and not see me all summer. I’m an only child, you know. You think she’d miss me.” “I’m sorry.” Caleb thought about taking her hand in his, but didn’t have the courage. “I miss my mom, too.” “Why is she in the hospital?” Megan asked. “She’s not anymore.” Caleb took a deep breath. He had been dreading this conversation. “She’s staying with my grandparents for a while. In Bristol.” “Why?” “She’s having a hard time.” Caleb rolled to his back, and rested his forearm over his eyes, blocking out the sun…and Megan’s gaze. “She’s been having a hard time since my dad died, really. And that’s been years ago. She just didn’t get over it. My uncle says she’s fragile.” “The uncle you live with?” “Yeah. My Uncle Titus. He’s always kind of taken care of us. He’s my mom’s little brother.” “Is your mom going to get better?” Megan’s voice was soft. Caleb shrugged. “I don’t think so. I think it’s just how she is.” “I’m sorry.” Caleb was surprised when he felt Megan grab his hand. He glanced over at her and smiled. The moment was interrupted when Robbie came tromping out of the woods, calling to them, “Look what I found!” Caleb looked up to see his friend carrying a two foot black snake by the neck, its slender body wrapped around his arm. Megan squealed, and let go of Caleb’s hand. “Don’t bring that thing near me!” Caleb stood to examine the snake, and Megan quickly moved behind him, placing her hands on his waist. “Don’t let him bring it over here! I hate snakes!” Caleb grinned over his shoulder at her, and said, “Don’t worry. I’ll protect you.” “Little River” is an ongoing serial which debuted on 6-30-15. Halloween can be a frightening time for family dogs. Each Halloween, veterinarians nationwide see pet injuries that could have been avoided. Here are some ways we can protect pets: * Walk your dog before trick-or-treaters start their visits. Keep a firm grip on the leash; many dogs are frightened by people in costumes. * Find a secure place in your home to keep your dogs, especially if you're giving out candy to trick-or-treaters. Many dogs get loose when the door opens, and the presence of little (and big) costumed people often scares animals, increasing the chance dogs will run away or get hit by cars. * Make sure your dog is wearing an up-to-date I.D. tag. * Place a dog gate in front of your front door to block access in case someone accidentally lets your pet out of the place where he's confined. Many dogs will run after trick-or-treaters. * If your dog has any aggressive tendencies, fear of loud noises, or a habit of excessive barking, place him in a quiet room as far away from your front door as possible at least a half-hour before trick-or-treaters arrive. * Consider crating your pet, which can make him feel more secure and reduce chances of accidental escapes. Provide chew toys, a favorite blanket, a piece of clothing with your scent on it, or whatever comforts the animal. Play soft music or a recording of soothing sounds. * If you want to have your dog near the door to greet visitors, keep him on leash. Pets can become very stressed by holiday activities and unwelcome interruptions in routine. A nervous dog might feel threatened and growl, lunge or bite. * Keep dogs indoors. It's a bad idea to leave dogs out in the yard; in addition to the parade of holiday celebrants frightening and agitating them, there have been reports of taunting, poisonings and pet thefts. Plus they're likely to bark and howl at the constant flow of treat or treaters. * As for cats, as the ASPCA and other organizations advise, keep cats indoors at all times. * Do not leave dogs in cars. * Keep dogs out of the candy bowl. Dispose of candy wrappers before your pets get to them, since the wrappers can cause choking or intestinal obstruction. Make sure the dogs can't get into the trash. Note: Chocolate contains theobromine, which can cause nerve damage and even death in dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more concentrated it is -- and the smaller the lethal dose. * Explain to everyone in your home (including kids) how dangerous treats are to pets. Take young children’s candy supply and put it somewhere out of reach of pets. Caution children about leaving candy wrappers on the floor. * Make sure pets can't reach candles, jack-o-lanterns, decorations or ornaments. * Halloween costumes can annoy animals and pose safety and health hazards...so think twice before dressing up the dog. Make sure the dog can breathe, see and hear, and that the costume is flame retardant. Remove any small or dangling accessories that could be chewed and swallowed. Avoid rubber bands, which can cut off the animal's circulation or, if accidentally left on, can burrow and cut into the animal's skin. * If the animal is very high-strung, consult your vet about tranquilizing for the night. * When walking dogs during or after Halloween, watch carefully for what they might pick up and choke on. Bits of candy and wrappers abound on sidewalks and streets after holidays. * If you notice these symptoms of chocolate poisoning, go to your vet or an emergency vet right away because your pet's life may be in danger: Excessive drooling Vomiting and diarrhea Excessive urination Hyperactivity Pupil dilation Muscle tremors and seizures Rapid heartbeat Coma

October is Adopt a Dog Month
Adopt from a shelter or rescue group: When you’re ready to open your heart and home to a new best friend, adopt from your local animal shelter or rescue group. Talk with shelter staff to find the perfect dog for you and your lifestyle, and remember that older dogs make excellent pets too. Spay or neuter your dog: Have your dog spayed or neutered, thus preventing the possibility of unexpected, and potentially unwanted, puppies. Spayed and neutered animals have been shown to lead longer, healthier lives and have fewer of certain behavioral problems than animals who have not been spayed or neutered. ID your pet: By putting identification on your dog, either in the form of a tag, a microchip or both, you will reduce the possibility that your pet will become one of the presumably “homeless” dogs that end up at your local shelter. Only 15-20 percent of dogs who enter a shelter are reunited with their owners. Make sure your dog is one of the fortunate few by outfitting him with proper identification! Support your local shelter: Show the pets at your local shelter or rescue group that you care by donating time, money or supplies like pet food, leashes, beds and toys. Call the shelter to see what supplies or services are needed most. Even the smallest effort can make a difference.
Teach Your Dog to Ring You
Here's a neat trick to help with potty training, contributed by reader Susanne Chastain, a canine teacher in Springfield, Missouri. Most puppies and dogs will alert their owners when they need to potty with body language, turning circles, sniffing, running to the door, whining, barking to go out. We can teach even very young puppies a smart way to let us know they "have to go" by hanging several jingle bells on a cord, then place them nose-high for the puppy or dog on the door knob of the door we routinely go out with the dog for potty time. As you approach the door, ring the bells and say "let's go potty" or "let's go outside." Put a little peanut butter on one of the bells, so when the puppy or dog licks it off, the bells will ring. Let the puppy or dog outside, saying "let's go potty" or "let's go outside." Before long, the puppy or dog will be ringing the bell by themselves. Sometimes it will mean "I need to potty" ... sometimes it will mean "I just want to go play and run." But always acknowledge the ring. They learn this practical trick in a short period of time. When you have company and the bell rings, you can say "excuse me, my dog is ringing her bell to go outside." People will think you are the smartest dog parent.

A good hint is to treat a smelly dog without buying expensive dog shampoos by using tomatoes. You can use tomato puree, rub it in and rinse. The dog will smell fresh for about six months.
We issue vouchers each month to Planned Pethood. We are working with Mark Neely at the Rockwood City Animal Shelter in his established pet food pantry. We educate others about the importance of spaying and neutering, vaccinating, caring for, and properly vetting pets. We are a 501c3 not for profit organization. We rely on the donations of our community members to fund our vouchers and assist with pet care needs. Each dollar donated goes directly toward the care of pets in our area.
