SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY
By O.I. Seenya • A wild wolf in the Sugar Grove Valley area. • Rumors of more new houses and businesses coming to the Midtown area. • Not Seen: The highly anticipated Blood Moon. On the Scanner: • “I was trimming my toenails, and now my toe is bleeding.” • “My cat is stuck in my sewing machine.” • “My dog is barking.” • “A man and woman are in a car and he is yelling at her.” • “A child is outside in his pajamas.”

Two Front Doors My Daddy always said a church has two front doors for a reason. One for men and one for women. I thought he was kidding. Many older homes have two front doors and show no evidence of ever housing two families. Many homeowners and real estate agents state with conviction that they know the true reason: • One is the "in" door and the other is "out" • Families were huge and two exits were needed in case of a fire or urgent outhouse visit • Extra ventilation – people didn't bathe and cooking over an open fire stinks • One door was for the residence and the other was for an in-home occupation • When the 2nd generation came of age, the home was shared • The second door was for servants • The home was built in two separate sections • Furniture pieces were huge atTwo that Front time –Doors to move in or replace pieces required individual access from the exterior • Times were hard. Families rented a room to railroad workers or boarded itinerant laborers at harvest time • Churches and meetinghouses at that time had separate entrances for men and women. This tradition was also carried on at home or the home was used for worship services • One of the doors was only used for funerals • One of the doors was only used for the groom to carry the bride over the threshold

Precious Memories By: Kay Christopher
The TV Antenna
A lot of you remember them well. The old TV antenna. We had one in Emory Gap, as did everyone who was fortunate enough to have a television. Ours was located in the back of the house, and you had to walk all the way around the house to get to it. We could get channels 6 (NBC), 9 (ABC), and 10 (CBS) and on a clear day, channel 12, which was out of Chattanooga. But, when it rained, a loud car went by, or an airplane flew over, the channels were barely viewable. Most of the time the older boys would go out and turn the antenna when we wanted to change channels. I remember us yelling “back a little”, or move it a little to your left.” It was horrible to have to go out there during the rain or when it was cold weather. I remember the antenna freezing to the ground, or to the metal brace that held it up. We had to take hot water outside in a pan and throw it on the frozen section to be able to turn it. No one had cable vision or satellite, so this was the only option we had. The TV stations signed off around 10 p.m. and stayed off until around 7 a.m. Back then, people went to bed early. I was married with three kids before cable vision was available where we lived. Me and the kids literally cheered with joy when the cable truck pulled up into the yard. I’ll say again, kids nowadays will never face the obstacles we had to experience when we were growing up. It’s hard to appreciate something you’ve never had to do without, and that’s sad.
Dad: Missing you on your birthday. A Dad’s love is special. A gift beyond compare. You only know the meaning when he is no longer there. A special time. A special face. A special Dad. I cannot replace with an aching heart. I whisper low, I love you Dad, And miss you so. In memory of our husband and father ... Oscar Edwards ... on his birthday on October 30th. We love and miss you!!! Marjorie Edwards, Carolyn Sachan, Tim Edwards, David Edwards
Happy Birthday Zebedee Webb

7 Tennessee Urban Legends That Will Keep You Up At Night
There’s nothing like a spooky tale to liven up a quiet night and get your blood pumping. There’s something magnificently chilling about the unknown, terror hides in the dark and within the imagination. Tennessee may be a pretty happy state from the looks of it, with all the hot chicken and southern hospitality and such. It’s behind pretty doors that you find the scariest stories – and we’ve found a couple just for you. 7) Bathroom Bullies
Jamestown has an eerie tale about Pine Haven school, a local abandoned building that houses a ghost. Years ago, a young boy was alone in the bathroom before class when he was confronted by the school bully. While he was washing his hands, he was shoved into the mirror, breaking it on impact and cracking his head open on the sink as he fell. Terrified of getting in trouble, the bully pulled up the floor boards and shoved the body under the school to rot. With no one living roaming the halls any longer, you are more than welcome to wander into the bathroom at the end of the hall. Legend has it, if you look in the mirror you will see the dead boy behind you.
6) Bell Witch Cave
The Bell Witch Legend is one of the most prominent horror stories of Tennessee. In the early 19th century, John Bell and his family were haunted by an malignant spirit, also known as a poltergeist. Supposedly the haunting got so awful that it took John Bell's life and continues to haunt and cast a pall over northern Tennessee.
5) Old Green Eyes
Chickamauga Battlefield is a place of fascination, where many men lost their lives and others wandered into the rest of theirs changed and forever broken. "Old Green Eyes," was a Confederate soldier whose head was the only part of his body found after the dust settled. If you walk the fields at night, it is said that you can see a pair of glowing green eyes following you.
4) Skinned Tom
Young Tom found himself wooing the wrong woman in the mid-1920's and paid the ultimate price. He took a young lady out on a date to Lovers' Lane in the Tennessee countryside, while unbeknownst to him she was actually married. Her husband tracked them down and murdered the woman, before dragging Tom from the vehicle and skinning him alive. Tom is said to still hang around Lovers' Lane, dripping with blood and carrying a knife to punish all those who play games with adultery.
3) The Signal Man
You may have heard of the headless train conductor before, but Chapel Hill is known for it's ghostly lights that run along the town railroad tracks and a headless conductor that wanders them endlessly, forever trying to signal a train that will never come.
2) The White Screamer
In White Bluff, Tennessee you'll find the locals whispering about the, "White Screamer." Some claim to have seen the hulking, white creature while others merely lock their deadbolts at night. Legend has it that an old couple lived in the woods and hid their terrifyingly ugly child in the basement. When it grew old enough, it escaped, killing the parents and streaking into the woods, only able to scream with abandon in the chill of the night. Supposedly, pets and cattle have fallen prey to the white being.
1) Blood Money
Leave a couple dollars on the grave of Sadie Baker and you may just appease the witch. Concord Cemetery is the final resting place of Baker, who was buried alive by her community in the 19th century for witchcraft. Don't go walking in the graveyard at night, because the locals swear they see her wandering amongst the tombstones.
Happy Birthday

October Holidays 1. October 1: World Vegetarian Day It's easy enough to eat meat-free for a day but this celebration is intended to kick off a month of vegetarian awareness and encourage more lasting change. 2. October 2: World Farm Animals Day This may seem at odds with the prior holiday until you consider that this is actually a day to protest the "farm" in "farm animal" and the cruel conditions it implies. It's an admirable effort, but the founders of World Farm Animals Day were a little heavy-handed in their decision to celebrate the cause on Gandhi's birthday. 3. October 4: National Ships-in-Bottles Day A day to honor the under-appreciated hobby of building really really small boats. 4. October 8: Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day Notice this holiday is for workers, not students. No judgment here if you've entered the working world and have yet to outgrow your teddy bear—in fact, all the more reason to celebrate. 5. October 11: Southern Food Heritage Day If you live below the Mason-Dixon line this is probably no different than any other day, but up North they are always eager for an excuse to partake in some biscuits and gravy. 6. October 12: Grandmother's Day in Florida Your grandmother sounds great and all, but on October 12, only celebrate her if she lives in Florida. 7. October 15: Hagfish Day If you aren't familiar, hagfish, also known as slime eels, are snake-shaped sea creatures that secrete a sticky slime—and they deserve their day. 8. October 15: National Cake Decorating Day Or, a chance to play with icing. 9. October 16: Dictionary Day Celebrated annually on the birthday of Noah Webster. 10. October 19: Evaluate Your Life Day Or, an excuse to procrastinate introspection the other 364 days. 11. October 23: National Mole Day If Pi Day has gotten too mainstream for you, perhaps you'll be interested in celebrating a less-known scientific holiday. Mole Day is observed from 6:02 A.M. to 6:02 P.M. on October 23rd in honor of Avogadro's number, 6.02 x 10 to the 23rd power, or a "mole" of something. The name unfortunately does not lend itself to consumption of baked goods in celebration, but may we recommend whipping up some Spanish mole sauce? 12. October 25: National Forgiveness Day If you forget to celebrate, it's really okay. Don't worry about it. 13. October 26: Mother-in-Law Day Notice this comes after National Forgiveness Day, so if you forget to give her a call it will be a long year before she forgives you. 14. October 29: National Cat Day 15. October 30: Create A Great Funeral Day 16. October 31: Happy Halloween!

10. George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley), 'All in the Family' and 'The Jeffersons' Once the Queens, New York neighbor of Archie and Edith Bunker, George Jefferson and his family moved on up to a deluxe apartment in Manhattan. Jefferson, who owns several dry-cleaning stores, is a quick-thinking schemer whose plans usually end in hilarious failure. George and his wife Louise have one son named Lionel. 9. Arthur Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler), 'Happy Days' In Milwaukee there is nobody cooler than Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli. A high school dropout and former biker gang member, Fonzie begins to turn his life around after saving high school student Richie Cunningham from a group of thugs. Fonzie is feared by bullies and nerds alike, but adored by women. He also has the ability of "fixing" things (cars, lockers, vending machines) by hitting them.. 8. Homer Simpson (Dan Castellaneta), 'The Simpsons' Homer Simpson is the bumbling, yet lovable, patriarch of the dysfunctional Simpson family. When not fully devoting himself to his wife Marge or barely attending to his children (Bart, Lisa and Maggie), Homer can be found at Moe's Tavern or sleeping on the job as Safety Inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Additionally, Homer has held nearly 200 random jobs. 7. Fred Mertz (William Frawley), 'I Love Lucy' Fred Mertz and his wife Ethel are the best friends and landlords of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. Fred and Ethel have a semi-contemptuous relationship, and often call each other names such as "fat old goat." The pair is constantly dragged into Lucy's crazy schemes and tend to be responsible for tipping off her husband. Fred, who is a World War I veteran and former show business man, is notoriously cheap. 6. Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore), 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' Mary Richards is single, independent career woman living alone in Minneapolis after breaking off a wedding engagement. After applying for a secretarial job at the WJM television station, Mary is instead hired as associate producer. She quickly makes friends with the station's hard-nosed boss Lou Grant, newswriter Murray Slaughter and anchorman Ted Baxter. 5. Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason), 'The Honeymooners' Ralph Kramden is a short-tempered, yet kind-hearted bus driver for the Gotham Bus Company. Kramden's hot head often leads to rows with his wife, Alice, to whom he constantly makes empty threats of violence — "One of these days, Alice! POW! Right in the kisser!" Ralph is famous for his get-rich-quick schemes and often involves his best friend Ed Norton in the plots. 4. Fred Sanford (Redd Foxx), 'Sanford and Son' Fred G. Sanford is the irritable owner of Sanford and Son, a Los Angeles-area junk and antique shop, which he runs with his son Lamont. Fred constantly torments his son, calling him a "big dummy," ruining his love life and guilting him into taking over the family business. Sanford often feigns heart attacks to get his way and calls out to his deceased wife. "I'm coming to join you, Elizabeth!" 3. George Costanza (Jason Alexander), 'Seinfeld' Constanza is a short, stocky, slow-witted bald man and long-time friend of Seinfeld. George has held several jobs, including Assistant to the Traveling Secretary of the New York Yankees, but has faked even more occupations, such as marine biologist and latex salesmen. He is constantly tormented by his overbearing parents, Frank and Estelle, whom he credits for ruining his life by not divorcing. 2. Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor), 'All in the Family' Archie Bunker is a blue collar worker, World War II veteran, loving family man and total bigot. Bunker often uses slurs when referring to people of different races, religions and sexual orientations, and longs for the days when everyone was just like him. Archie lives with his wife Edith, daughter Gloria and son-in-law Mike, whom Archie often clashes heads with. 1. Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball), 'I Love Lucy' Lucy Ricardo is an eccentric, red-haired housewife living in New York City and often found getting into trouble with her best friend, neighbor and landlord, Ethel Mertz. Lucy's goofy antics and attempts to join her husband, Cuban singer Ricky Ricardo, on stage often lead to hilarious arguments. The ukulele-playing Lucy is mom to Ricky Ricardo Jr., better known as "Little Ricky."

Facts About October October is the tenth month of the year and one of seven months with a length of 31 days. In common years, January starts the same day of the week as October, but no other month starts on the same day in leap years. October is associated with Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. It happens to be my favorite time of year. I love the crisp Autumn air and the gorgeous colors. And October is the month my daughter was born, 25 years ago. Happy Birthday Amanda!! Those born in the first half of the month are under the Zodiac sign Libra and those born in the latter part of October are Scorpios. October's birthstones are pink tourmaline and opal. It's said that an opal will crack if not worn by someone born in October. The birth flower is the calendula. And for all of you sports lovers, here's a tid-bit for you: The last week in October is the only time of the year when all four major North American Sports Leagues schedule games. Famous Birthdates: October 2--Sting October 4--Charlton Heston October 7--Simon Cowell October 12--Hugh Jackman October 13--Paul Simon October 16--John Mayer October 20--Tom Petty October 23--Ryan Reynolds October 26--Hillary Clinton October 28--Bill Gates October 30--Henry Winkler

Tennessee law gives the procession the right-of-way if the lead vehicle has a flashing amber light or is led by a “properly identified” escort. As with the other laws, the lead vehicle must comply with traffic lights and signs, and the other vehicles may follow without stopping if their headlights are on. It must proceed at no less than 45 mph on a limited access highway and no less than five mph below the posted limit on other roads. Vehicles following the procession on a two-lane road are prohibited from passing it. Other drivers are prohibited from driving between vehicles in the procession, unless directed by a police officer.

What is a “Power of Attorney?”
A power of attorney gives an agent the legal right to handle a principals affairs according to his wishes. An agent, for example, can't sell a principals house if the principal does not want to sell it. Similarly, an agent cannot access a principals bank account without the principal adding the agent's name to his bank account and giving him the right to sign checks and withdraw money. Some banks and brokerage firms have specific rules for recognizing and accepting powers of attorney, such as only accepting documents that are notarized. Some courts do not allow agents to make gifts on behalf of a principal unless the power of attorney specifies that the agent has gifting authority. General powers of attorney go into effect immediately, give an agent specific rights and responsibilities and become void if the principal becomes disabled or otherwise incapacitated. Springing powers of attorney only become effective after a predetermined event, such as a severe illness or if the principal becomes disabled, and give an agent specific rights and responsibilities. Durable powers of attorney become effective immediately and remain valid even if a principal becomes incapacitated. All powers of attorney expire when the principal dies.

Tell me why.” “Well,” the parishioner began, “it reminded me of the Peace of God because it passed all understanding and the Love of God because it endured forever!”

How to Keep a Child Quiet in Church The pastor recalls, “After a recent worship service the mother of a fidgety seven-year-old boy told me how she finally got her son to sit still and be quiet. About halfway through the sermon, she leaned over and whispered, ‘If you don’t be quiet, the preacher is going to lose his place and will have to start his sermon all over again!’ It worked!”

Columbus Day in the United States The first Columbus Day celebration took place in 1792, when New York’s Columbian Order–better known as Tammany Hall–held an event to commemorate the historic landing’s 300th anniversary. Taking pride in Columbus’ birthplace and faith, Italian and Catholic communities in various parts of the country began organizing annual religious ceremonies and parades in his honor. In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison issued a proclamation encouraging Americans to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage with patriotic festivities, writing, “On that day let the people, so far as possible, cease from toil and devote themselves to such exercises as may best express honor to the discoverer and their appreciation of the great achievements of the four completed centuries of American life.” In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Columbus Day a national holiday, largely as a result of intense lobbying by the Knights of Columbus, an influential Catholic fraternal benefits organization. Originally observed every October 12, it was fixed to the second Monday in October in 1971. ====================================

Why Butter Is Better for You Than You Think Have you ever tried convincing someone that butter is part of a healthy diet? They were probably skeptical, most likely because of news coverage that advances the idea that saturated fat, which is found in butter, is bad for your health. The latest about butter shows that it can be consumed in moderation because it contains fat-soluble vitamins, which are key to maintaining a healthy weight. Butter is mainly composed of fat: 70 percent of butter is saturated fat, about 25 percent of butter is mono-unsaturated fat, and about 2.3 percent is polyunsaturated fat. Although butter does contain some trans fats, dairy trans fats are considered healthy, unlike trans fats from processed foods. The conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) found in butter is associated with several health benefits, it may reduce the risk of cancer, promote weight loss, and improve cardio health. The vitamin and mineral breakdown of butter demonstrates that it is a nutrient-dense food. It provides vitamins A, D, E, B12, and K2, some of which have antioxidant properties that help with health problems.

Hints for Potty Training
Disposable pull-ups are a great way to introduce the concept of toilet-training. They’re also convenient when you’re out and about and your child is still having frequent accidents. Once your toddler has started to get the hang of using the toilet or potty, you can put them into underpants for short spells around the house each day. But make sure their clothing is light and easy to take off in a hurry. Encouragement and persistence are vital, but it’s equally important to know when to back off. If your son or daughter is becoming distressed by the process, it may be better to take a step back and wait a few weeks. It’s far better to make a fresh start another time, than risk the child becoming set against the whole concept. You will more than likely know when your child is willing to use the toilet or potty, but there will inevitably be times of resistance. How to mop a wood floor Even a normally optimistic child will sometimes grumble Routine Cleaning or refuse, and it’s common for In high-traffic areas, like the dining room and kitchen, you should toddlers to say “No” to most sweep daily, if possible, and mop once or twice a week. Mop things at times, just to assert less-trafficked areas once a month or once a season. themselves. Mopping Technique Remember: Water is wood's worst enemy (even on sealed floors!), so use a damp mop rather than a soaking wet one. Dip the mop into the bucket of prepared cleaning solution, wring it out completely, mop in the direction of the wood grain and repeat. When the water gets dirty, empty the bucket, mix a new batch of cleaning solution and continue mopping.

Penny Pinchers No more buying expensive stain pre-treaters! Grab some white chalk to remove oil and grease spots on your clothes! Rub white chalk directly on the grease or oil mark The chalk will absorb the grease. Wash your clothes like normal TIP: If the stain didn’t come out all the way, let fabric air dry and repeat above (before placing item in the dryer. Dryers set stains) Water down your dish soap. I have an olive oil dispenser I use for dish soap. I fill it up half-way with water and then fill the rest with dish soap. I've been doing this for a while with no problem. It has definitely helped me cut back on how much dish soap I buy. Switch to flannel sheets during the cold months of the year. We keep our thermostat set in the low 60s at night, so it can get pretty chilly in our house at night. One little thing that makes a big difference: flannel sheets. Don't buy breadcrumbs. They're just too easy to make from stale bread, old hamburger buns, and the ends of the bread loaf that most people don't like for sandwiches. Pinterest is your money-saving friend. There are so many good ideas, tricks, tips, and articles that can save you a bunch of money. If you're not pinning stuff yet, you're missing out. Use a laptop instead of a desktop computer. Laptops use 80% less energy than their desktop counterparts because it's powered by a battery. If possible, refinance your mortgage. Interest rates are so low right now, so, if you can, take advantage of them. We refinanced a little over a year ago from our 30-year mortgage to a 15-year mortgage. We cut our term in half, but, because of low interest rates, our payment only went up around $150 per month. Cancel your gym membership if you're not using it more than a couple times a week. I've had a tendency many times over the years to keep my gym membership in hopes that knowing that money is coming out of my account automatically will compel me to go to the gym. Not the best motivation, really.

America’s Banks in Greater Danger than 2007/2008? Remember derivatives? The absurdly complex financial instruments that essentially caused the massive bank failures in 2008… and led to the biggest Bob Tonachio economic collapse since The Great Depression? Well, what if I told you the amount of exposure to derivatives the top 5 U.S. banks have – right now, today – is 45% LARGER than it was just before the collapse in 2008? That’s not a typo. The very same people that created the 2008 banking crisis are at it again -- having created another, much bigger ($273 TRILLION) derivatives bubble (versus $187 trillion in ’08). The FDIC Admits it Can’t Handle Another Banking Crisis! Think your bank deposits are safe because they have FDIC backing? Think again. It was recently discovered that the Federal Deposit Insurance Commission – the group that insures deposits for U.S. bank accounts – will not be able to properly insure your deposits for at least the next 5 years! This is according to the FDIC’s own annual report! In other words, if there’s another crisis, the Commission has enough money in its insurance fund to cover just 1.01% of all the money in U.S. bank accounts (or about $1 for every $100 of yours). The government is finally starting to open up to the idea of nationalizing private citizens’ retirement accounts to pay the national debt. Most people don’t know this, but the U.S. Treasury has already raided the pension funds of government workers at least FOUR times since 2011 to plug federal spending deficits. They’re going after private accounts next. Political insiders Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul agree, having recently revealed that plans are already in the works. U.S. Banks No Longer Safest Place to Put Your Money. According to Global Finance magazine, who recently came out with its annual list of the 50 safest banks in the world, only 5 are U.S.-based, and the highest rank of any of those five is #39. Just how bad could the banking crisis get? What could happen? You could have lots of bank failures. You could have a stock market crash. All this money that the government has created has bulled up the stock market to new highs. So, the next step is likely to be down. A lot of people have assets in the stock market, and if they don’t, their pension funds are in the stock market. Most of the cities in this country have and most of the states in this country have gigantic pension liabilities that are underfunded, underfunded even though the stock market is at all-time highs and the bond market is in a super bubble.…Now, when interest rates inevitably go up from these artificially suppressed levels where they are now, the bond market is going to collapse, the stock market is going to collapse, and with it, the real estate market is going to collapse. These pension funds are going to be wiped out. Then what’s going to happen? This is a very bad situation. The U.S. is digging itself in deeper and deeper.” You simply cannot QUADRUPLE the money supply in six years (and more than double the national debt over roughly the same time) without severe and catastrophic consequences. It took our nation 216 years to rack up the first $8.5 trillion in debt… then just 8 more years to double that amount.) It’s only a matter of time before investors and governments around the globe realize that the U.S. dollar is not the sanctuary it once was… and that’s when the real crisis will begin. It’s no secret that our governments – on both the state and federal levels – are broke, in every sense of the word. As a result, they are becoming increasingly desperate and aggressive. In short, they are taking increasingly aggressive actions to capture more of your money and more control over everything... from your retirement accounts... to where you are allowed to keep your savings. It doesn’t matter if you have $5,000 or $5 million. If you have anything of value, the government is going to try to get its piece. As former 22-year U.S. Congressman Ron Paul says: “They will do what they think is necessary and they’ll use force, intimidation, and guns, because you can’t challenge the state’s so called right to control the money. They will confiscate retirement funds if they need to do it. Eventually if you have private funds, the people I know in Washington, they’re quite capable of saying, You’ve got to save the country. 10 Halloween Pranks that Don't Damage Property
Smashing pumpkins is a cliche, and only serves to make a mess. TP-ing a house isn't a good Halloween prank because you can do it any time of the year. And vandalism is downright thuggish, the preference of the slightly imbalanced kid in the group who has to take everything too far. No, a Halloween prank is worth its weight in blood only if it scares the pirate pants off of someone or gives them the willies deep inside their skeleton. Of course, a funny gag played on trick-or-treaters is equally apropos on this night of heightened emotions. Boo!
1. Servin' up over-easies
Handing out inappropriate "treats" to trick-or-treaters is an old classic, but one of the all-time best comes from Geoff "Peter Pan" Dodd (my uncle-in-law), who answers the door holding a spatula and a frying pan full of fried eggs, ready to drop one in the nearest treat bag.
2. Junk drawer treats
A variation on the terrible treat gag: Tell trick-or-treaters that you're sorry but you've just run out of candy. Then say, "Well, wait a minute...I'm sure I can find something here that's good..." Step away from the door briefly, coming back with "treats" like an old hairbrush or toothbrush, leftovers from the fridge, one dirty sock...anything you can think of. Be completely earnest and ask, "Who wants what?" to really make them squirm.
3. Living dead scarecrow
This timeless classic requires careful setup, but it scares the candy corn out of trick-or-treaters of all ages. Dress up as a scarecrow or other suitable character so your body and face are completely concealed. Slump down onto a hay bale next to your front door, as though you're a dummy. When visitors have rung the bell and await the door opening, you come to life in any variety of ways: jump up and scream hideously, slump over and moan, say "hello" as though you've been waiting for them to arrive...anything will get a good reaction.
4. Leaf of your senses
A simpler variation on the scarecrow: Hide inside a pile of leaves near the driveway or walkway leading to the front door, and jump out with a monster howl at the appropriate time. You can also scare them coming and going by having a friend hide inside a bagged trash can next to the leaf pile.
5. Rubber rat floating in toilet
This is a simple family prank for Halloween night. Please don't try this unless everyone in the house has a healthy heart.
6. Thick glasses
A funny prank for trick-or-treaters: Answer the door wearing ridiculously thick-lensed glasses (costume or real) and pretend to have extremely poor eyesight, repeatedly missing the mark when trying to drop candy into the treat bags. You'll be amazed at how many kids fall for this and try desperately to move their bags underneath your misguided hands.
7. Caramel onions
Another classic for family and friends: Wrap an apple-shaped onion in a caramel-apple wrap (available in grocery stores this time of year). Add a Popsicle stick, melt the caramel slightly in the microwave for an authentic look, and let it cool. Serve to the sucker of your choice.
8. Double surprise
This one requires some acting ability. Open the door for trick-or-treaters wearing a bathrobe and slippers, with your hair wrapped in a towel (for women). Act completely surprised by the commotion, saying, "Oh, geez!. I forgot it was Halloween. I was just getting ready to take a bloodbath." Follow this with whatever ghoulish behavior you choose-bare your teeth to reveal blood-stained fangs, pull the towel from your head to show a bloody skull cap pierced with a spike or saw blade, etc.
9. Table manners
Set up a card table on your front stoop or concrete stairs with a self-serve bowl of candy, and darken the house as though you've gone out trick-or-treating. Cover the table with a tablecloth, and post a sign that says, "Please take one piece only." Have one person hide under the table while another is in the house secretly watching the bowl of candy, communicating to the table person via cell phone. When the watcher catches a kid taking a handful of candy (as many do), he signals to the table person, who yells out from his hiding place, "ONE PIECE ONLY!!!" or a similar admonishment. There's also the option of jumping out from under the table to reveal a frightening getup.
10. Sick at work
Women: Instead of taking this once-a-year opportunity to wear a skimpy and/or skin-tight costume to work, show up looking terribly ill and complain of unusual and odious symptoms. Explain to coworkers in confidence that you knew you shouldn't have come to work today but you just couldn't miss the Halloween party. And scratch a lot.
Signs You Are Too Old To Trick Or Treat You ask for high fiber candy only. People say, "Great Keith Richards mask!" and you're not wearing a mask.
SHERRY TIPTON Realtor My Focus Is Your Real Estate Need!
When someone drops a candy bar in your bag, you lose your balance and fall over. You're the only Mummy in the neighborhood with a walker. When the door opens you yell, "Trick or..." and can't remember the rest. You keep having to go back home to go to the restroom.

Halloween was confusing. All my life my parents said, “Never take candy from strangers.” And then they dressed me up and said, “Go beg for it.” I didn’t know what to do! I’d knock on people’s doors and go, “Trick or treat.” “No thank you.” - Rita Rudner

13 Gunfighting Rules Everyone Should Know 1) Guns have only two enemies: rust and politicians. 2) It's always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. 3) Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you. 4) Never let someone or something that threatens you get inside arm's length. 5) Never say "I've got a gun." If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they hear should be the safety clicking off. 6) The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes; the response time of a .357 is 1400 feet per second. 7) The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always win. 8) Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets... You may get killed with your own gun, but he'll have to beat you to death with it, cause it'll be empty. 9) If you're in a gun fight: If you're not shooting, you should be loading. If you're not loading, you should be moving. If you're not shooting, moving or loading, you're probably dead. 10) In a life and death situation, do something... It may be wrong, but do something! 11) If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about? 12) You can say "stop" or "alto" or any other word, but a large bore muzzle pointed at someone's head is pretty much a universal language. 13) You cannot save the planet, but you may be able to save yourself and your family.

A Close Shave After the moving van emptied his belongings into the parsonage on Wednesday morning, Pastor Olson walked downtown to get a haircut. He wanted to look his best on Sunday and was delighted to discover a barbershop only a few blocks from the church. The sign on the door even read “Lutheran Barbershop.” Unfortunately the barber was not in. “I can give you a shave,” his wife said, “but I don’t cut hair.” “Sure,” Pastor Olson said. “I can always use a good shave.” Sure enough, the barber’s wife did an excellent job. Pastor Olson asked her how much he owed, and she said $25. Shocked at the cost, the good pastor gave her the money not wanting to make a fuss in case she turned out to be a parishioner. He woke on Thursday, and to his delight he did not need to shave. Maybe this wasn’t such a bad deal after all, he thought. On Friday, to his surprise, there was still no stubble. On Saturday morning, his face was still as smooth as a baby’s behind. Confused, he walked back to the barber shop and introduced himself to the barber before inquiring about the excellent but expensive shave. The barber chuckled. “So you met my wife Grace,” he said. “Yes,” Pastor Olson replied. “How did she learn to give such a close shave?” “I don’t know,” the barber said, “but once you’ve been shaved by Grace you never have to worry about being shaved again.”

How does autumn color happen?
For years, scientists have worked to understand the changes that happen to trees and shrubs in the autumn. Although we don't know all the details, we do know enough to explain the basics and help you to enjoy more fully Nature's multicolored autumn farewell. Three factors influence autumn leaf color-leaf pigments, length of night, and weather, but not quite in the way we think. The timing of color change and leaf fall are primarily regulated by the calendar, that is, the increasing length of night. None of the other environmental influences-temperature, rainfall, food supply, and so on-are as unvarying as the steadily increasing length of night during autumn. As days grow shorter, and nights grow longer and cooler, biochemical processes in the leaf begin to paint the landscape with Nature's autumn palette.
What happens to all those fallen leaves?
Needles and leaves that fall are not wasted. They decompose and restock the soil with nutrients and make up part of the spongy humus layer of the forest floor that absorbs and holds rainfall. Fallen leaves become food for soil organisms vital to the forest ecosystem. It is quite easy to see the benefit to the tree of its annual leaf fall, but the advantage to the entire forest is more subtle. It could well be that the forest could no more survive without its annual replenishment from leaves than the individual tree could survive without shedding these leaves. The many beautiful interrelationships in the forest community leave us with myriad fascinating puzzles still to solve.
When is the best time to see autumn color?
Unfortunately, autumn color is not very predictable, especially in the long term. Half the fun is trying to outguess Nature! But it generally starts in late September in New England and moves southward, reaching the Smoky Mountains by early November. It also appears about this time in the high-elevation mountains of the West. Remember that cooler high elevations will color up before the valleys. The Forest Service's Fall Color Hot-line (1-800-354-4595) can provide you with details as the autumn color display progresses.
On Halloween I’m going to throw a party where everyone has to dress up as a cop so if it gets busted, it’ll just be mass confusion

My Sunshine
(A Dream about Granny)
by: Travis Martin The sun is bright today says my grandmother; yes it is, I replied. I turned in my chair to look at her. Granny was wearing one of her yellow dresses and her blue dress pants. I said to my grandmother, aren't you a bit overdressed to be fishing? She looked at me with a big smile on her face and replied; the sun is bright today. I laughed and said, yes, yes it is granny. The wind is blowing across us and carrying the scent of roses with it. I turned again to my grandmother and took a second to admire the loving smile she has on her face. She is looking out over the lake and she is watching the sun dance across the small waves. Do you find it strange granny? She replies; find what strange? Isn't it strange that the wind smells like roses and there isn't a rose within miles of here? She laughs and turns her head towards me, with the same loving smile across her face she
says; the sun is bright today. I shake my head and grin at her; yes granny, the sun is always bright when I'm with you. It seems no matter how long I have fished here, I have never caught a single fish. It must be the bait I'm using. I reach down into my tackle box and inside it I find some strange things. Granny, where is my tackle? And why is my tackle box full of yellow flowers? Granny looks at me once again but unlike the first two times, she doesn't have the same smile across her face. She replies, yellow is my favorite color and I thought you should take the time to admire them. I'm confused now, where was the smile my grandmother had earlier, and why did she replace my tackle with flowers. As I'm pondering about what had just taken place, I noticed the breeze has become cold and the smell of roses in the air has all but faded now. Granny I think we should pack up and head back home now. The wind is getting cold and you're

not dressed for cold weather. She tells me that if the sun is out, it'll be ok. She turns to me and asks, why are you always in a hurry to leave? I reply, It's not that I'm in a hurry, it's just that I have to get home so I can get up for work tomorrow. After saying this I start to feel a pain in my chest; the pain feels like heartache. I get up out of my chair and walk toward the edge of the lake. I glance across the surface of the lake and I notice that the sun is getting low. I walk over to my grandmother and say, the sun is almost gone and the wind is chilly. I reach down to pick up my grandmother's tackle box and she places her hand on top of mine. I could feel the loving warmth of her hand; it was something I had always cherished when I was younger. Granny I have to head back home now. She asks me to wait for a minute. I sat down on the ground next to her chair and I start to hear my grandmother sing. She is singing her favorite song and as she is singing I could feel my heart

the warmth I'm so familiar with her having seems to be fading away. She asks me one last time, please stay for a while longer. I open my eyes and glance over to my side and I notice my dress shoes lying on top of a chair; draped over the back of the chair is my dress pants and suit. I slowly turn to face in front of me and I can see my knees and feet making bumps in my blanket. A single tear falls down my cheek as I close my eyes again. Granny looks at me and smiles and says, the sun is bright today isn't it. Yes granny, it is bright. The sun is glistening across the lake and the air is filled with the scent of roses. Granny turns to me and says, thank you for staying. I wipe the tear away and look over at her and say, I will stay as long as you want me to. She starts singing again; you are my sunshine. I open up my tackle box while listening to her sing and I pull out the flowers. I never knew how pretty they were before; never have I taken the time to even look.

aching more. My grandmother is singing 'you are my sunshine', and I'm watching the last part of the sun sink over the horizon. Granny I really have to go now. The sky is dark now and the air is ice cold. No more scent of roses fills the air. The warmth of my grandmother's hand is slowly going away. By this time, my heart is broken and I'm confused as to why is my grandmother not getting ready to leave. Granny please let me get your things ready to put in the car. It is really cold now and the fish never bite a single thing we toss out at them here. Granny grasps my hand as if to keep me quite for a second. She looks up at me and says; please don't be in a hurry. I laughed and replied, granny it isn't like you have to stay here, you can come home with me if you want to. Goosebumps are starting to form on my arms and legs from the chilly air. Granny I have to go, its dark now and I have to work in the morning. She lets go of my hand and looks at me; all

Song of Solomon 8:5 by: Katie Bailey Randolph We have a "love failure" in the church, for many have left our first love. We've moved away from the Savior, where have we left our Beloved? The lure of the wilderness draws us away from our dear Savior's side, but His gentle mercy awaits us to return and with Him abide. We need to lean upon Jesus for without Him we have no power to stand against the wiles of Satan, the prince and the power of the air. If we determine to lean upon Him, there's never a chance we might fall for the strong arm of faith will keep us when we give to the Savior our all. Let's learn to lean heavy on Jesus, for one day He'll come for His bride, to take us out of this wilderness, and ever we'll be by His side. Are you learning to learn, learning to lean, learning to lean on Jesus? We'll have more power than we ever dreamed if only we've learned to lean! Inspired by a message preached by Bro. Barry Rackley of Rogersville Baptist Temple, June 2015

The First Ambulances in Roane County
Haphephobia = morbid fear of being touched. Haptein is a Greek word that means to fasten (that is, to bring two things together). Haptics is the English word for "a science concerned with the sense of touch," used in technologies like touch-screen displays that let users feel clicks. Doraphobia = The dread of touching the skin or fur of an animal. The Greek word dora means "the skin or hide of an animal." The root word dora comes from the Greek verb derein, meaning "to skin or to flay." This is also the source of derm, the Greek word for skin, which shows up in words like "dermatology". Eremophobia - The morbid dread of being alone. The Greek word erēmia means desert (a place where there are no other people). The word hermit shares the same Greek root, but a hermit may find solace rather than dread in solitude. Ergophobia - A fear of or aversion to work. Ergon is the Greek word for work. This word shows a family resemblance to the words ergonomic and ergometer. Hypnophobia - The morbid fear of sleep. Hypnos is the Greek word for sleep. Hypnotize is a word that shares the same Greek roots. Brontophobia - An abnormal fear of thunder. Bronto is from the Greek word that means thunder. The same root gives us the name of the brontosaurus (literally, "thunder lizard"). Kakorrhaphiophobia - An abnormal fear of failure. The Greek word kakorrhaphia means a clever or devious plot or plan, derived from kakos, meaning bad or evil. The English word cacophony shares the same Greek roots. Ophidiophobia - An abnormal fear of snakes. Ophis is the Greek word for snake. Two other English words with similar roots are ophiomorphic, meaning "snakelike in form" and ophiophagous, which means "feeding on snakes." Taphephobia - Fear of being buried alive. The Greek word taphē means burial or grave. You can see the same Greek root in the English word epitaph (an inscription on a tomb). Phobophobia - An excessive fear of acquiring a phobia. The Greek word phobos means "fear or flight." When there's nothing left to fear but fear itself, this word is the perfect double whammy of the Greek word for fear.
By Robert Bailey, Roane County Historian
Until the 1970’s in Roane County, if you had a medical emergency that required transportation, whom did you call? You called the funeral home, of course! Roane County did not have a government operated ambulance service until 1971. Up to that time the funeral homes operated the only available ambulance service. In 1970, two of the funeral homes operating in Roane County discontinued ambulance service citing increasing costs. That led to the county to begin providing the service. From stories that have been told, it could be a fast and interesting ride in the Booth Funeral Home of Rockwood ambulance. An early 1930’s photo of the Lamb & Coulter Funeral Home of Rockwood shows a combination hearse/ambulance. The only difference was the window shades. As an ambulance, the shades were pulled down to show a red cross.

THE PHANTOM (Can You Find Me¿)
Is There Life Out There?
For as long as we can remember, humans have wondered if we are alone in the universe. In fact, in Find this place and WIN a years subscription to The Roane Reader September 2013, a team of British scientists claimed a cell fragment found by a balloon flight in the Go to www.roanereader.com/thephantom upper atmosphere may be proof of life from space. While individuals and conspiracy theorists often PLEASE PROVIDE YOUR NAME, ADDRESS, come forward with new "proof" of alien visitations, even scientists have claimed to find evidence for EMAIL(optional) and PHONE NUMBER. extraterrestrial life. Here are our top five scientific claims for aliens. ANSWERS MUST BE VERY SPECIFIC!! NASA scientist Richard Hoover published a paper in 2011, claiming to have found fossil evidence Entries that fail to provide all this information will not qualify! for cyanobacteria in carbonaceous meteorites from outer space. Hoover observed slices of meteorites through scanning electron microscopes, and identified filaments and structures that he said resemble the tiny single-celled algae. Reaction from some scientists was skeptical, in part because the study was published in the questionable Journal of Cosmology. Other researchers said the study was conducted thoroughly, but it was too soon to say for sure whether the claim would hold up. NASA's two Viking landers touched down on the surface of Mars. The probes conducted a host of biological experiments, including collecting samples of Martian soil to test for organic compounds – the building blocks of life – and biosignatures that could indicate the presence of microorganisms. The landers found little evidence for organics, but the onboard Labeled Release experiment found a reactive agent in the surface material of Mars that produced increased carbon dioxide. Gilbert Levin, an engineer who designed Labeled Release, concluded that this activity was triggered by living microorganisms lurking in the Martian soil. However, that interpretation has not been widely accepted by the scientific community. More recent research has also called into question Viking's negative results in searching for organic compounds. A study published in December 2010 in the Journal of Geophysical Research suggested that these compounds were present on Mars, but they were just destroyed by other chemicals before Viking could detect them. Science fiction author Sir Arthur C. Clarke, famous for penning the novel "2001: A Space Odyssey," made headlines in 2001 when he claimed that recently returned photos from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor showed evidence of trees and bushes on Mars. Most scientists scoffed at the claim, but the writer stood by his belief. "I'm quite serious when I say have a really good look at these new Mars images," Clarke said at the time. "Something is actually moving and changing with the seasons that suggests, at least, vegetation." Clarke died in 2008 in Sri Lanka. The idea that Mars was traversed by a complex network of canals was first put forward in 1877 by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, and later popularized by astronomer Percival Lowell. Lowell made intricate drawings of what he took to be canals based on observations he made at his observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz. The idea gained relatively wide acceptance until the early 20th century, when astronomical observations improved and higher-resolution imaging revealed the "canals" to be optical illusions and geologic formations. When scientists announced in 1996 that they'd discovered evidence of fossilized microbial life in a meteorite from Mars, it was a huge event. President Clinton made a national address about the discovery, which seemed to herald the news that we are not alone. Subsequent analysis of the research, on a meteorite called Allan Hills 84001 (ALH 84001), produced controversy, with many experts asserting that the fossils could have been created by non-living processes. The evidence is still debated, and the space rock remains a topic of ongoing research.

A Marriage Made in Heaven
On their way to a justice of the peace to get married, a couple has a fatal car accident. The couple is sitting outside heavens gate waiting on St. Peter to do the paperwork so they can enter. While waiting, they wonder if they could possibly get married in Heaven. St. Peter finally shows up and they ask him. St. Peter says, "I don't know, this is the first time anyone has ever asked. Let me go find out," and he leaves.
I think everyone should go to college The couple sit for a couple of months and begin to wonder if they and get a degree really should get married in Heaven, what with the eternal aspect and then spend six of it all. "What if it doesn't work out?" they wonder, "Are we stuck months as a bartend- together forever?" St. Peter returns after yet another month, looking somewhat bedraggled. "Yes," he informs the couple, "you can get er and six months married in Heaven." "Great," says the couple, "but what if things as a cabdriver. Then don't work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?" they would really be FCE Christmas Ideas Fair educated. Family and Community Education (FCE) clubs presents: ~ Al McGuire

Hello Readers, Looking back on the column about our jobs as teens, and Lloyd "Moose" Morris's experience in the handling of a buffer, reminds me of one. When I first was assigned to a ship (John W. Weeks DD 701) while in the Navy, my gunnery officer was Lt. Charles Wilson. Yes, the very same Texas Representative Charles Wilson whom the just released movie (Charlie Wilson's War) starring Tom Hanks was about. We were aboard the same ship for a couple of years and I was once given the task of cleaning his stateroom. Now I had never seen a buffer much less ran one. We were out at sea and to make matters worse the ship was bouncing all over the place. I never knew that a buffer was steered by simply raising and lowering the handle. Nooo...that was too easy, I thought that you had to push it sideways. As you might have guessed, it didn't want to go in the direction I wanted it to. WHAM....right into Lt. Wilson's bunk, down it came and half of the furniture in his room flying all over the room also. After that, no more cleaning staterooms for me. I was much safer down in the boiler room cleaning bilges. Now Tom Scott, Jr. (Class of 1961) had a much easier job. In an email from Tom, he told me this about his high school jobs. Here is what Tom had to say," While in high school, I worked at Bernard's Department Store on Saturdays. I swept, washed windows, waited on customers, and did any errands such as going to the bank for change, or taking clothing to be altered. The pay was $0.50 per hour and I worked 10 hours (not including lunch and evening breaks). It was hard getting up early on Saturdays, especially after playing in a football game the previous evening, but the $4.85 (net after Social Security withholding) each week, gave me some spending money and something to put in the plate at church. For two summers, I worked as a counselor at Baylor Summer Camp in Chattanooga. That was fun and it helped me get some exercise to prepare for football season." Thanks Tom, the merchants in Rockwood were always willing to help us earn a little extra spending money. Walter Evans, (Class of 1956) worked during his teens too. He had this to say, " My summers were spent helping work the garden, gathering fruit from trees, picking berries to can, mowing lawns for money to go to the movie on Saturday. This lasted until I was old enough to get a Social Security number and work at the Tennessee Products Company Store. As you can remember from working there, we were expected to do whatever was needed. It could be anything from carrying 100 pound bags of fertilizer, bagging groceries, delivering groceries and furniture, pumping gas into cars, stocking shelves, painting, working cash registers, selling shoes, or sticks of dynamite. You name it, the Company Store carried it. Mr. McCulley was an excellent boss. He would work with me on my schedule during school sessions as I was heavy into sports all four years of high school. I normally only worked on Saturdays during the school year but if we had holidays, he would have us doing some kind of work to make a few extra dollars. I was fortunate to work there for both my Junior and Senior years of high school and enjoyed interacting with all of the other employees and the customers, of which most worked in the steel mill" "I also carried the Knoxville News Sentinel, Chattanooga Free Press daily for a year or two, and sold the Rockwood Times when it still cost 5 cents. Rockwood had so many ways to spend your time constructively. I can remember one of the hardest things I did in the summer was helping one of my uncles who lived down near Eagle Furnace gather in the tobacco and putting it in the barn to dry. That was hard work. That was before my high school days. Back then, every dime you made was like a $20 bill today. I believe gas was about 18 or 19 cents per gallon, and they had gas wars which knocked it down to 14 or 15 cents for a few days. Do you remember that Kayo or some similar name station they built on Gateway right behind where the Roane Theater and Town Shoppe was located on Rockwood St. (Avenue at the time)? It had a small place for the attendant, (more like the size of a telephone booth) and real cheap gas." Thanks a lot Walter. I remember the Kayo gas station well. Seems to me like the name was later changed to Fleet. I also worked for Mr. McCulley for a while, a really fine person, and an icon in the history of Rockwood. ..Until next month Ray My email address is RCOL110479@aol.com if anyone has a story to share or if anyone is interested in my book, ROCKWOOD MEMORIES Vol. 2..Sorry Vol. 1 has long been sold out. They are ten bucks and can be mailed to you if you include $2 for shipping. "Mr. Smith, I have reviewed this case very carefully," the divorce court judge said, "and I've decided to give your wife $275 a week." "That's very nice, your honor," the husband said. "And every now and then I'll try to send her a few bucks, myself."

The Church and the Old Cowboy
Rockwood Memories
Here Comes the Judge

Happy Birthday
Nancy Taylor Oct. 7th
One Sunday morning an old cowboy entered a church just before services were to begin. Although the old man and his clothes were spotlessly clean, he wore jeans, a denim shirt and boots that were very worn and ragged. In his hand he carried a worn out old hat and a equally worn out Bible. The church he entered was in a very upscale and exclusive part of the city. It was the largest and most beautiful church the old cowboy had ever seen. The people of the congregation were all dressed with expensive clothes and accessories. As the cowboy took a seat, the others moved away from him. No one greeted, spoke to or welcomed him. They were all appalled at his appearance and did not attempt to hide it. As the old cowboy was leaving the church, the preacher approached him and asked the cowboy to do him a favor: “Before you come back in here again, have a talk with God and ask him what he thinks would be appropriate attire for worship.” The old cowboy assured the preacher he would. But the next Sunday, he showed back up for the services wearing the same ragged jeans, shirt, boots and hat. Once again he was completely shunned and ignored. The preacher approached the man and said, “I thought I asked you to speak to God before you came back to our church.” “I did,” replied the old cowboy. “If you spoke to God, what did he tell you proper attire should be for worshiping in here?” asked the preacher. “Well, sir, God told me that He didn’t have a clue what I should wear. He said He’d never been in here before.”

What are the Origins of these Words?
Denim
Marathon
Denim, the all-American fabric, actually gets its name from the French words de After defeating the Persians at the battle of Marathon, a town in southern Greece, the Nĭmes meaning "of Nĭmes," because it was manufactured in the French city of Athenians sent a messenger to run the 25 miles back home. Nĭmes. According to legend, he delivered the news and then dropped dead. The word jeans is also European in origin – the name comes from the city of Genoa Marathons became 26 miles, 385 yards at the 1908 Games in London when extra (earlier known as Genes) because the pants were worn by sailors in the Genoese navy. yards were added so the race would finish in front of the royal box.
Bourbon
How does whiskey get to be called "bourbon"? By being distilled from mash that is at least 51% corn, then aged in new charred oak barrels. That's the way people liked it back in the 19th century when it was first created – in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
Bikini
In July 1946, the United States detonated two nuclear bombs at the Bikini atoll, an island in the South Pacific, which of course was big news around the world. A year later, a French fashion designer introduced a scanty two-piece bathing suit and named it the bikini. Unable to find a model immodest enough to wear it, he debuted it on a stripper – and it too became big news.
Donnybrook
The annual Donnybrook Fair near Dublin included fiddlers and dancers, but it was best-known for the frequent eruption of whiskey-fueled fighting – often involving heavy clubs known as shillelaghs. The fair was shut down in 1855, but by that time the word donnybrook had bashed its way into the language to mean a free-for-all or brawl.
Tequila
Developed in Mexico in the 16th century, this was probably the first distilled alcoholic beverage created in North America. It's made from the fermented juice of the Mexican agave plant. Some of the best was – and still is – made in the town of Tequila.
Badminton
A game with an upper-crust heritage. Badminton House is the residence of the Duke of Beaufort in southwest England, and Sometimes called a "monkey suit," its origins involve the wolf. Here's why: the sport is said to have been played there for the first time in 1873. In the 1880s the village of Tuxedo Park, about 50 miles north of Manhattan, became a Originally it was known as "The Game of Badminton," but soon became plain old popular resort. It was here that some young men, disregarding the fashion of the day, "badminton." began to wear dinner jackets without tails. It's a combination of a children's game called "battledore and shuttlecock" and poona, The new style was soon called the tuxedo. which was played by British officers in India in the 1860s. And the name of the town? It comes from a Native American word meaning wolf. Hamburger
Tuxedo
Lesbian
Originally, lesbian simply meant "from Lesbos," a Greek island . Its current sense comes from the ancient poet Sappho, who lived on Lesbos around 600 BC and wrote poems that dealt with the relationships – sometimes passionate – between women.

Hamburger means of or from the city of Hamburg, Germany, where this preparation of meat, originally called "Hamburg Steak", originated. In the U.S., the name was applied to the sandwich as well. Age is important only if you're cheese or wine. Of all my husband's relatives, I like me best. Once over the hill, you pick up speed. I used to get lost in the shuffle; now I just shuffle along with the lost. The twinkle in your eye is only the reflection of the sun on your bifocals. You’re so old you confuse having a clear conscience with having a bad memory. You’re getting old when you don't care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don't have to go along. Fred: I was going to buy you a handkerchief for your birthday. Harry: That was a kind thought. But why didn't you? Fred: I couldn't find one big enough for your nose.
The Mother-in-Law A constantly nagged and harried son-in-law decided to buy his mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a birth day present. The next birth day came but this year he didn’t buy her a gift. The mother-in-law was upset and asked the son-in-law why was he had forgotten this time. The angry son-in-law responded, “Well, you still haven’t used the gift I bought you last year!”

Where’s the Fire?
Toddlers’ Playtime is back for the fall, as are Musical Mornings. Toddlers’ Playtime is designed for children aged 4 and younger, accompanied by their parents, grandparents, or caregivers. Little ones have an opportunity to play with blocks, toy trains, and puppets; they can “cook” in the pretend kitchen, dig for dinosaurs, and look at books. The adults can socialize while the children play. This activity is held on Tuesday mornings from 10 AM to noon in the Preschool Room and is free with paid admission or museum membership. http://childrensmuseumofoakridge.org/toddlers-playtime/
At 8.00pm on Halloween two fire-fighters could see a fire raging in a back yard. It was clearly in breach of the rule on burning leaves after dark. One of the fireman knocked on the door, and they both waited each holding their helmet in their hand. The little old woman opened the door and promptly dropping a bar of candy into each helmet. Tips for Making a Jack-o-Lantern If something is worth doing - it's worth doing to excess. Thus buy 3 or 4 pumpkins. All pumpkins have blemishes, decide how you can cut them out, for example a spot could be cut out to make the mouth, else hide discolored patches 'round the back. Experiment on the thickness or thinness of the skin, how much you leave 1 or 2 cm will effect the 'glow'. Carving away the red skin but leaving a thin white flesh can create interesting effects around the mouth. A biro is better than a felt tip pen for making the eye and mouth cut-outs. Should your Jack-o-Lantern smile or frown? If you can get the angle right when cutting off the lid, you will prevent it falling in the Jack-o-Lantern. Punching out the eyes and mouth is better than cutting - at least for the first few bits. Experiment with dyes, e.g. green and blue food dyes around the eyes create interesting effects. Improvise, nobody has all the right tools, if you haven't got a craft knife, what other sharp tools are there around the house?

Q: What is the difference between a flashing red traffic light and a flashing yellow traffic light? A: The color. Q: How do you deal with heavy traffic? A: Heavy psychedelics. Barbie got a divorce
A man walks into the toy store to get a Barbie doll for his daughter. So he asks the assistant, as you would, "How much is Barbie?" "Well," she says, "we have Barbie Goes to the Gym for $19.95, Barbie Goes to the Ball for $19.95, Barbie Goes Shopping for $19.95, Barbie Goes to the Beach for $19.95, Barbie Goes Nightclubbing for $19.95, and Divorced Barbie for $265.00." "Hey, hang on," the guy asks, "why is Divorced Barbie $265.00 when all the others are only $19.95?" "Yeah, well, it's like this ... Divorced Barbie comes with Ken's house, Ken's car, Ken's boat, Ken's furniture ..."

The word icebox may seem like a throwback to the age of TV dinners and Jell-O molds, but it’s actually much older than that. The first known use of icebox dates to 1792 – a long time before the invention of the household fridge. However the word is a relative neologism compared to refrigerator – which can be traced back as early as 1611.

The first known use of the word floppy disk was in 1972, and while the last known use isn't marked it's certainly a term, and tool, that has fallen out of use. We're pretty sure our kids have no idea what a floppy disk is (and, er, equally sure we have a stash of them somewhere with "important things to save" on them). Ironically, the icon that often means "save" on software and apps today is in fact an image of a floppy disk.

Just the Facts, Mam
Rhyming Words and their Meanings
who named the city after their summer home in Chicago Blood is such a good stain that Native Americans used it for paint "I am." is the second shortest complete sentence in the English language On average, a person will spend about five years eating during their lifetime Many cancer patients that are treated with chemotherapy lose their hair. For some when the hair grows back, it can grow back a different color, or be curly or straight A volcano has enough power to shoot ash as high as 50 km into the atmosphere The longest hiccups on record was by an American pig farmer whose hiccups persisted from 1922 to 1987 Panthers are known as black leopards, as they are the same species of leopard. If looked at closely, black spots can be seen on a panther Approximately 25% of all scald burns to children are from hot tap water and is associated with more deaths than with any other liquid In the United States, approximately 50 million people fish per year Dolphins hear by having sound waves transmit through their skull to their inner ear region
: to act with unusual or improper slowness : to waste time by loitering or delay Dillydallying is very similar to shilly-shallying, and the latter can be used to mean wasting time as well. But shilly-shally also has the meaning of being indecisive, or showing a lack of resolution.
In 1888, Hollywood was founded by Harvey and Daeida Wilcox, Dillydally
Fuddy-Duddy
: one who is old-fashioned or ultraconservative Fuddy-duddy can refer either to a person who is old-fashioned, one who is pompous, or one who is concerned overmuch with trifles. No one is entirely certain where it came from, although there is speculation that it is from the Scots word fuddy ("the tail of an animal").
Razzle-Dazzle
: complex maneuvers (as in a competitive sport) designed to confuse the opponent Before razzle-dazzle was the term du jour to refer to showboating in sports, it referred to a state of confusion (and also occasionally to something, such as a type of fast-moving carousel, that was designed to induce confusion).
Roly-Poly
: short and pudgy in stature There are a lot more words in English for people who have too much weight than there are for those who have not enough. The list of synonyms for skinny is dwarfed by the list of its antonyms. Consider that for most of the history of the English-speaking people we have had more skinny people than overweight ones, and this imbalance appears to be a reflection of the language's use for cruelty.
Hoity-Toity
: affecting superiority: haughty and patronizing Hoity-toity is today used almost exclusively as an adjective, to describe a person who's got their nose stuck up in the air, but it was used solely as a noun for over a hundred years before taking on adjectivehood. It is a reduplication of the older English verb hoit, a word for which the Oxford English Dictionary provides the splendid definition of "to romp inelegantly" (and I am sorry to report that that dictionary appears to have no words which are defined as "to romp elegantly").
Hocus-Pocus
: nonsense or sham used or intended to cloak deception Hocus-pocus has had a number of meanings over the years. It began, in the early 17th century, as a term for a juggler (and the etymology is thought to be the jugglers' attempt to imitate a Latin word). After that it became a phrase used by the jugglers, used as a faux incantation when performing a trick.

Barking Remedy
(This approach can also be adapted for use with dogs who engaged in destructive behavior such as chewing furniture when the owner is away from home.) This correction is called sneak 'n peek. Use the setups by leaving or coming home earlier than your usual time on work days as well as on your days off. Make all your usual preparations for going to work, then: 1. Sit down quietly for at least five minutes in the area that you usually leave the dog. 2. Pay no attention to him. Don't even make eye contact or speak. 3. Get up and leave without a word. 4. Start the car and drive off down the street -- do whatever makes the dog think you are really gone. 5. Then sneak back to an area adjacent to the dog, but out of his sight and scenting ability (if outside, stay downwind). The instant the dog displays any sign that he may start barking, such as pacing or whining, or if he does start barking, apply a noise as a "distracter." The distracter must be some sound other than your voice. The sounds must be quick -- less than a second in duration -- in order to be successful. A single tap on the window, door, fence, etc., interrupts the dog's attention from the barking but avoids revealing where the distracter came from. If possible, move your observation point behind the dog when his attention is on his usual target. When the barking stops, do not praise the dog. Remain silent and repeat the distracter if the barking starts again or if you see or hear the dog getting ready to bark. 6. Continue this routine until the dog settles down. This may take between a few minutes to an hour, but it must be done. If you must leave for work before total success is achieved, don't worry -- complete correction will take a little longer, but eventually you will win. You will know you are making headway when the following happens: A sound occurs that used to cause barking; the dog alerts to it but settles down or just whines or sniffs in the direction of the sound.

A Cat-achism Baptism The young son of a Baptist minister was in church one morning when he saw for the first time the rite of baptism by immersion. He was greatly interested in it, and the next morning proceeded to baptize his three cats in the bathtub. The first kitten bore it very well, and so did the other young cat, but the old family cat rebelled. It struggled with him, clawed and tore him, and got away. With considerable effort he caught it again and proceeded with the ceremony. But she acted worse than ever, clawed at him, spit, and scratched his hands and face. Finally, after barely getting her splattered with water, he dropped her on the floor in disgust and said: “Fine, be an Atheist.”
Preacher buys a parrot A preacher is buying a parrot. "Are you sure it doesn't scream, yell, or swear?" asked the preacher. "Oh absolutely. It's a religious parrot," the storekeeper assures him. "Do you see those strings on his legs? When you pull the right one, he recites the lord's prayer, and when you pull on the left he recites the 23rd Psalm." "Wonderful!" says the preacher, "but what happens if you pull both strings?" "I fall off my perch, you stupid fool!" screeched the parrot.

Helpful Pet Hints Deodorize your dog without a bath. Just rub baking soda into the fur and then brush it out! After soaking up the majority of urine or picking up the poop, baby wipes do a great job and pick up all smells with no stains left behind. Giving cats medicine. If your cat refuses to cooperate when you're trying to give him liquid medicine, put the medicine on the top side of one of his paws. He'll instinctively lick it right off! Using metal water dishes outside in winter may be a risk, because your pet's tongue could stick to the frozen metal. In the summer, metal bowls can get very hot and burn your dog. ID your pet. Make sure your pet’s tags are up-to-date and securely fastened to your pet's collar. If possible, attach the address and/or phone number of your evacuation site. If your pet gets lost, his tag is his ticket home. Also consider microchipping your pets. If your dog runs away from you and you finally catch up to it, no matter how angry you are at the dog, do not yell or smack it or your dog will never come to you when called for fear of being punished. When your dog is teething, instead of have him chewing on couches, walls, etc., buy a few (cheap) washcloths. Soak the washcloth with water and put it in the freezer. When fully frozen, give it to the dog to chew. It will thaw out so have another one ready in the freezer. (Be careful when doing this with very small dogs, as they may get a chill. I have heard of small dogs getting too cold too quickly when chewing on ice.)
Dog Bite Prevention •Do not stare into a dog's eyes. •Do not tease a dog or any animal. •Do not go near dogs chained up in yards. •Do not touch a dog you see loose outside. •If you see a loose dog, tell an adult. •Do not touch or play with a dog while he or she is eating. •Do not touch a dog while he or she is sleeping. •Only pet a dog with permission from its owner. •If a dog barks or growls at you, slowly back away. Don't look straight into his eyes; he considers that a threat. •If a dog chases you, stand perfectly still, like a tree. If he knocks you down curl up on your side and lie still, like a dog or lie on the ground like a log with your hands over the back of you neck. Dogs like to chase moving objects. If you stop, so will they. They'll usually just sniff you and walk off. •If a dog bites you, get an adult. Wash your skin with warm, soapy water for 10 minutes. Then notify your doctor and animal control.
