SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY By O.I. Seenya Harriman man spitting lougy's on windows in town caught on camera by Police & given a warning ticket. "Harriman is really growing, I saw trees growing on roof top buildings on Roane Street."
Harriman City Fire Department's Haunted House October 25, 7 - 11 pm October 26 - 27, beginning at 7:30 pm Harriman Municipal Office Complex basement 609 North Roane Street, Harriman Bring the kids and tour the Haunted House... IF YOU DARE! $3 - 13 & under $5 - Adults
The Presswood Family I have thought about the Presswoods from Emory Gap many times, but couldn't remember all their names, so I didn't dare write an article about them for fear of leaving someone out, but Janice Mullins, whom I had not seen in decades came by my office and I got a chance to talk with her and get a list of the names of her family. Of course, I lost the list before I got the article written, but since her business required a return visit to my office, I had her write them down again for me. The Presswoods lived very close to Emory Gap Baptist Church, and us Lemons' all went to school with them. They were a big family like most families in the gap back then, and they were poor. Course like I've stated before—no one realized anyone was poor because we all were. Edna (Morris) and Edward Presswood had six kids, Buddy (Edward, Jr.) Lee Roy, Rufus, Janice (Mullins), Ruth Ann (Ausburn) and Cathy (Cofer). Rufus has since passed away, but he was married to the former Sue Snow. My sister Rita was “struck” on Rufus, and we would unmercifully make fun of her for having a boyfriend. I don't know if Rufus ever knew she “liked” him. I worked with Janice at Revco (now CVS and moved up the road) in the gap back in the 70s. I remember her hair was so long it was to her feet, but she always kept it so pretty and neat. The whole Presswood family had a good reputation. I never heard anyone say a mean thing about Edward, Edna or any of the kids. I don't recall seeing Mr. Presswood that much back then, but I remember walking by their house and seeing Mrs. Presswood standing in their front yard keeping an eye on her kids as they played. She always waved at us and seemed to have a smile on her face every time we saw her. How times and things have changed in Emory Gap since I was a shy, skinny, little girl in the gap. But the memories of that place and the good, decent people who lived and struggled there cannot be bypassed by anyone--young or old, rich or poor.

To remove candle wax that has dripped onto cloth, use the dull edge of a knife to scrape off as much wax as possible. Place several paper towels on both sides of the fabric and iron on a low setting. Change the towels often as the wax is absorbed into them. Place your candles in the freezer overnight to prevent them from dripping. They also will burn longer. To make a candle fit snugly into its holder, pour hot water into the candle bowl, let it heat up a bit, and then pour the water out and stick the candle in immediately. Rub candle wax on wooden drawers to make them open with ease. Saw teeth rubbed with a candle will cut wood more easily, and the candle wax will protect the blade from rusting. Before the first snowstorm, rub your shovel with an old candle stub, and the snow will easily slide off. To predict the weather, just blow out a lit candle. If the wick smolders for longer than usual, rain is on the way. If the wick goes out quickly, look for fair weather.

How to carve a Jack-O-Lantern How to pick a good pumpkin for carving: Look for one that is a little misshapen. Inspect it for soft spots (especially the end opposite the stem). Reject a pumpkin that has soft spots; they will cause it to deteriorate quickly. Remember, your pumpkin doesn’t have to sit on its base; in fact, that’s often its weakest spot. Let the pumpkin guide the shape of the face: An elongated pumpkin should have an elongated face. A fat and happy pumpkin should have a fat and happy face. Hollow or whole? There are two reasons for hollowing: (1) If the inside is going to be exposed (through the mouth, etc.), it looks better if it is hollowed neatly. (2) If you plan to light the pumpkin from the inside, it must be hollow. You can hollow it out from a hole in the back instead of the top, so that the look of the face isn’t affected. If you’re illuminating with a candle, you need to hollow from the top to allow the heat and smoke to escape. The Tools: Use a water-based marker to outline the face that you want to carve. First, draw a line down the center to establish symmetry. Then sketch the nose, the approximate center of the face. Once you’re satisfied with the details, trace over the lines using a permanent marker. For carving, basic kitchen implements, such as a paring knife or a steak knife with a standard—not serrated—blade that’s not going to bend, work well. You can also use a standard jigsaw blade. Otherwise, improvise: Use a melon-ball cutter to make circles, for example. Make a face To achieve a three-dimensional appearance, carve the entire pumpkin. Exaggerate the features. (If you aren’t sure what teeth really look like or how the gum line works, smile and look in the mirror.) If the pumpkin is frowning, carve wrinkles under the mouth. To add character, carve a lot of “crow’s feet” lines around the eyes. Consider using the stem as the nose and inserts such as radishes for the eyes, or cut eyeballs from the back of the pumpkin and hold them in place with toothpicks. Carve with care Use two hands at all times: one to control the blade and the other to control the pressure with which you cut (and thus the depth). Take care not to jab the blade into the pumpkin; you don’t want to cut all the way through the rind—except to determine its depth. The thickness of the rind will vary, not only from pumpkin to pumpkin, but also within one pumpkin. To determine your pumpkin’s average depth, cut a core sample where you want an eye or a nostril to be. Keep that piece nearby as a reminder of how deep you can safely cut. Enjoy it while it lasts Pumpkins, which are actually a fruit, not a vegetable, are 90 percent water, so after carving they usually last only three days to a week. A jack-o’-lantern with a surface carving will last longer than one that is cut all the way through. Putting a candle or other light inside will shorten its life span, as the heat that results can “cook” the pumpkin and reduce its longevity to a matter of hours.
Weight lose tip of the day: No matter how hard you try-you can never really laugh your butt off.
Why do leaves turn colors in the Fall? During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer. They begin to shut down their foodmaking factories. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll. The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in the fall. In some trees, like maples, glucose is trapped in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn cause the leaves turn this glucose into a red color. The brown color of trees like oaks is made from wastes left in the leaves. It is the combination of all these things that make the beautiful fall foliage colors we enjoy each year.

Rockwood Memories By: Ray Collet
I know July 4th has gone on by, but we have several festivals coming up in Roane County in the next few weeks. Rockwood Village Apartments Festival, Sept. 29 and both Kingston and Rockwood Fall Festivals on Oct. 6th. It is hard to believe the July 4th celebrations that we used to have in Rockwood. I remember Dad would buy plenty of ice cream and I would go to Ingram's Wholesale Co. to buy cones. They were next to impossible to find in local grocery stores. Mr. Ingram would always ask me if we had a restaurant and smile. He knew we didn't, but always helped us out with them. In 1951, a typical 4th of July celebration went like this. The Jaycees and Jaycettes put on a festival. The general chairmen were Noma Fitsze, Maurice Grief, and David Smith. At eleven AM, a parade would form at the corner of Kingston Avenue and Wheeler Street and proceed down Rockwood Avenue to Civitan Field where a "bird hunt' and remaining events started. The "bird hunt", consisted of a hundred chickens, turkeys, and guineas, being released and you kept what you caught. Following at 11:45 a drawing was held. The prize was one years supply (12 pair) of panty hose. The Greasy Pole was all greased and ready then with a Five Dollar bill atop. At noon, a prize of two dollars was given for the best decorated bike. At 12:30, the second drawing was held with the prize being a deluxe electric iron. One o'clock started a Tug-Of-War with Army veterans against Navy veterans, ten on each side. The winning team each got three tickets in the various drawings. At 1:30 the men's sack race started with a winning prize of two dollars. The next drawing at 2;00 was a Peleuger Rod and Reel. At 2;30, a Battle Royal was held with five participants from Campbell School donning boxing gloves. The winner received five dollars. Various games and contests continued from 3:00 until the 6:00 supper break. Rockwood High Band gave a concert starting at 6:30 followed by the fourth drawing. This prize was a GE clock radio. At 7:30, Don Gibson and his King Kotton KinFolks from WNOX Mid Day Merry Go Round hit the stage for a show. The Grand Drawing was held at 8:00 and that prize was a 500 dollar war bond. Around nine, it was dark enough for fireworks. That always brought on the oohs and aahs. One added note, it was reported that the next year THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS had been spent to order fireworks that would be bigger and better. It sure would be nice to see a celebration like that again in Rockwood. What do you think? This wasn't the column I was going to write, a lot of interest has been aroused as to the reason the Rockwood High School Tigers changed their colors from Orange and Black to Green and White. Several reasons have been brought up, but I think that I know the REAL reason why Green and White was chosen. Growing up in Clymersville in the late 40's and early 50's, it seemed like there were a hundred kids and we all were football nuts. On Sundays we would go to the High School Football field, and if it wasn't open for us, we would climb the fence and play games against the "City" boys. Now a few of them had uniforms that Santa had brought them, but us Clymersville boys didn't have. We didn't even have shoes. But here is what we did....Every weekend or so we would all eat watermelon, green with white stripes. Now after eating all we could, we would throw the rinds into the chicken pen. I am here to tell you that a bunch of chickens can flat clean out a watermelon rind. After the rinds got all dried out we would take our knives and carve out football helmets. Bill Wilkey, well-known furniture maker was a whiz at this back then. Now with those green and white stripped watermelon helmets on our heads, some were too big, so to hold them down, we would take one of sister's bras cut it into and put it over the helmet and the strap under our chin. The bras were usually white, so that made the green and white connection. I tell you when we hit the field for a game, barefoot and those "Helmets" on, it either scared the opponents so bad , or they were laughing so hard they couldn't play. So that is how I think the color combination came about. Come down to the Rockwood Village Apartment's Fall Festival Sept. 29, for a day of fun and who knows, I might just show up and tell a few Tall Tales....

Made in the USA Costco sells Goodyear wiper blades for almost half the price that you will pay on the outside and they are made in the U.S.A. Read and do the following. Unfortunately our politicians and top CEO's have pushed for trade to China and Mexico for years so Americans are now out of work. Did you know that there is no electric coffee maker made in the US and that the only kitchen appliances made in the US is Viking? This information came from the report by Diane Sawyer. Hopefully this has changed or will soon!! I DIDN'T KNOW HALLMARK CARDS WERE MADE IN CHINA! That is also why I don't buy cards at Hallmark anymore, They are made in China and are more expensive! I buy them at Dollar Tree - 50 cents each and made in USA. I have been looking at the blenders available on the Internet. Kitchen Aid is MADE IN the US. Top of my list already. Yesterday I was in WalMart looking for a wastebasket. I found some made in China for $6.99. I didn't want to pay that much so I asked the lady if they had any others. She took me to another department and they had some at $2.50 made in USA. They are just as good. Same as a kitchen rug I needed. I had to look, but I found some made in the USA - what a concept - and they were $3.00 cheaper. We are being brainwashed to believe that everything that comes from China and Mexico is cheaper. Not so. I was in Lowe's the other day and just out of curiosity, I looked at the hose attachments. They were all made in China. The next day I was in Ace Hardware and just for the heck of it I checked the hose attachments there. They were made in USA. Start looking, people . . ...In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - most often, their job. My grandson likes Hershey's candy. I noticed, though, that it is now marked "made in Mexico." I don't buy it anymore. My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico...now I have switched to Crest. You have to read the labels on everything. This past weekend I was at Kroger . . . I needed 60W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy -- was an off-brand labeled, "Everyday Value." I picked up both types of bulbs and compared them: they were the same except for the price . .. .the GE bulbs cost more than the Everyday Value brand, but the thing that surprised me the most was that that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - you guessed it - the USA at a company in Cleveland, Ohio. It's Way past time to start finding and buying products you use every day that are made right here. So, on to the next aisle: Bounce Dryer Sheets... yep, you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada. The Everyday Value brand cost less, and was MADE IN THE USA! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years, at almost half the price. My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbor's! Stop buying from overseas companies - you're sending the jobs there. (We should have awakened a decade ago....) Let's get with the program and help our fellow Americans keep their jobs and create more jobs here in the USA.

Light Candles When dusk falls, we can make it an occasion of celebration (instead of despair!) by lighting a special candle. My family likes beeswax for its amber color and sweet honey scent–it’s like bringing a little sun indoors. Some of us have to get up in the morning when it’s still dark, too, and the same candle can add a little warmth and encouragement to the darkest morning. I actually love the soothing peace of getting up early and writing down my dreams by candlelight. You might, too. Soothing Bath A warm bath, especially scented with just a few drops of essential oil, can be a perfect way to warm up and unwind after a chilly day. You can add honey for a sweet skinnourishing treat, or fill a small muslin bag with oatmeal and rub it all over: oats are terrifically soothing to the skin. Comfort Nook Make sure you have at least one cozy, comfy place in your home where you can curl up in a golden circle of warm lamplight with a good book and a soft blanket or throw over your feet. Creating a little sanctuary of warmth and comfort is a must when the temperatures drop. If you have young children, you’ll find that they respond to a Comfort Nook, too: prepare your lap for lots of cuddling and storybook-reading! Toasty Toes It’s become something of an autumn ritual in my house to bring out the fuzzy socks and soft felt slippers that keep our toes warm and toasty throughout the colder months. Because we have such pleasant associations around them, it feels celebratory to put those socks and slippers on again after the warm months without them. Your little ones may enjoy having a pair of VSS (Very Special Slippers); my son had a colorful felt pair decorated like dragons that he wore long after he had outgrown them because he loved them so much! Hearthside Pleasures If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, it can become the focal point for family gatherings now that it’s chilly enough to want a fire burning indoors. Back when I had a fireplace, the first fire of the season was always a very big deal with my family: we would throw a handful of ground cinnamon on it, or add a bundle of special twigs gathered from the ground and tied with a piece of raffia. One year, we experimented with dipping small pinecones in melted beeswax and then rolling them in cinnamon and cloves. They smelled fabulous sitting in a basket on the hearth, and they made great fire starters.
The Guests A young man and his wife were on a trip to visit his mother. Usually they arrived in time for supper, but they had had a late start, and now it was getting dark, so they decided to look for a place to stay overnight and drive on in the morning. Just off the road, they saw a small house in the woods. "Maybe they rent rooms," the wife said. So they stopped to ask. An elderly man and woman came to the door. They didn't rent rooms, they said, but they would be glad to have them stay overnight as their guests. They had plenty of room, and they would enjoy the company. The old woman made coffee and brought out some cake, and the four of them talked for a while. Then the young couple were taken to their room. They tried to insist on paying for this, but the old man said he would not accept any money. The young couple got up early the next morning, before their hosts had awakened. They left an envelope with some money in it on a table near the front door, to pay for the room. Then they went on to the next town. They stopped at a restaurant and had breakfast. When they told the owner where they had stayed, he was shocked. "That can't be," he said. "That house burned to the ground, and the man and the woman who lived there died in the fire." The young couple could not believe it. So they went back to the house. Only now there was no house. All they found was a burnt-out shell. They stood staring at the ruins trying to understand what had happened. Then the woman screamed: In the rubble was a badly burned table, like the one they had seen by the front door and on the table was the envelope they had left that very morning.

Where in the Bible are these verses about Harsh Words? - A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. - A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise [man] keepeth it in till afterwards. - Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. - Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. - For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. - Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: - But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. -Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: - Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. - Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: - Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. - Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. [He that is] slow to anger [is] better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. - A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but [he that is] slow to anger appeaseth strife. - And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. - But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, [even] Christ: - [There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. - But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. - The LORD [is] merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. - Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service. - [There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. - Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: - For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: - There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise [is] health. - And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me

Household Hints Got unsightly silverware? Polish it with the juice of a banana skin pureed in a blender. When tomato sauce turns a good plastic container pink, fill it with warm water, drop in one or two denture-cleaning tablets, wait 20 minutes, and rinse. (The tablets also work well for cleaning toilets.) If you spill red wine on a tablecloth or carpet, sprinkle the stain liberally with salt and leave it alone until the salt turns red. Then shake out and wash the tablecloth or vacuum the carpet. Pull a clean cotton sock over your hand to wash or dry the dishes. Refresh household sponges by soaking them in cold salt water for ten minutes. And old trash can or barrel makes an ideal potato garden. Make sure the can has a few holes in the bottom for drainage. The barrel of a dead washing machine makes a dandy outdoor planter. Just build a wooden box around it to disguise the metal. Is your toaster toast? Unplug it, cut off the cord, clean out the crumbs, and use it to hold bills and other mail. Use clean, squeeze-type ketchup and mustard containers for decorating cakes. Their spouts are great for writing and drawing with cake icing. Give new life to any feather pillow by putting it in the dryer with three clean tennis balls on low heat for ten minutes. Reuse dishpan water on garden beds. Leave the dishpan under the faucet to catch water whenever you rinse your hands or sponge off a countertop. Instead of letting the cold water that precedes the hot water out of the faucet run down the drain, capture it in a pot or kettle for later use. Making a cake? Use the oven's heat to bake potatoes or other foods at the same time. When you turn off the oven, leave the door ajar to dissipate the heat into the room.

Penny Pinchers If your string of pearls has lost its luster, clean it carefully with a soft cloth dipped in olive soil. Wipe off oil before wearing. When silk flowers get dusty, put them in a paper bag with several tablespoons of salt and shake gently for two minutes to clean them. Troubled by pet hairs on your furniture? Put on a rubber glove and run your hand in one direction over the surface. The hairs will form a thin rope that's easy to pick up. Boil old toothbrushes in water for four minutes and use them for cleaning golf clubs, bird feeders, and fish tanks, or for getting the last bits of corn silk from fresh ears. Use old socks to protect especially fragile Christmas ornaments by putting them in old socks. Also, wear old socks on your hand to dust railings and chair rungs. Sprinkle baking soda on carpets to deodorize them. Leave it on for an hour and then vacuum. A worn-out blanket makes great padding for your ironing board cover. It's absorbent and soaks up steam without leaving a watery mess. Use an old pair of panty hose to strain old paint, removing any lumps or debris that might otherwise mar your paint job. Old panty hose are also great for: tying up plants, storing onions, and buffing shoes.

She commandeered the room in the basement of her dorm as soon as she realized she would have to pull an all-nighter in order to prepare for tomorrow’s final exam. Her roommate, Jenna, liked to get to bed early, so she packed up everything she thought she would need and went downstairs to study . . . and study . . . and study some more. It was two o’clock, when she realized that she’d left one of the textbooks upstairs on her bed. With a dramatic sigh, she rose, and climbed the stairs slowly to her third-floor dorm room. The lights were dim in the long hallway, and the old boards creaked under her weary tread. She reached her room and turned the handle as softly as she could, pushing the door open just enough to slip inside, so that the hall lights wouldn’t wake her roommate. The room was filled with a strange, metallic smell. She frowned a bit, her arms breaking out into chills. There was a strange feeling of malice in the room, as if a malevolent gaze were fixed upon her. It was a mind trick; the all-nighter was catching up with her. She could hear Jenna breathing on the far side of the room—a heavy sound, almost as if she had been running. Jenna must have picked up a cold during the last tense week before finals. She crept along the wall until she reached her bed, groping among the covers for the stray history textbook. In the silence, she could hear a steady drip-drip-drip sound. She sighed silently. Facilities would have to come to fix the sink in the bathroom…again. Her fingers closed on the textbook. She picked it up softly and withdrew from the room as silently as she could. Relieved to be out of the room, she hurried back downstairs, collapsed into an overstuffed chair and studied until six o’clock. She finally decided that enough was enough. If she slipped upstairs now, she could get a couple hours’ sleep before her nine o’clock exam. The first of the sun’s rays were beaming through the windows as she slowly slid the door open, hoping not to awaken Jenna. Her nose was met by an earthy, metallic smell a second before her eyes registered the scene in her dorm room. Jenna was spread-eagled on top of her bed against the far wall, her throat cut from ear to ear and her nightdress stained with blood. Two drops of blood fell from the saturated blanket with a drip-drip noise that sounded like a leaky faucet. Scream after scream poured from her mouth, but she couldn’t stop herself any more than she could cease wringing her hands. All along the hallway, doors slammed and footsteps came running down the passage. Within moments other students had gathered in her doorway, and one of her friends gripped her arm with a shaking hand and pointed a trembling finger toward the wall. Her eyes widened in shock at what she saw. Then she fainted into her friend’s arms. On the wall above her bed, written in her roommate’s blood, were the words: “Aren’t you glad you didn’t turn on the light?”

Jokes Auburn and Georgia were playing a game at Georgia. With about two minutes left in the first half, Georgia had the ball with a first down. A Georgia fan sets some firecrackers off. Auburn, thinking it was halftime, ran off the field. Three plays later, Georgia punts. Q : What does the average Florida player get on his SAT? A : Drool An Alabama student was visiting a yankee relative in Boston over the holidays. He went to a large party and met a pretty co-ed. He was attempting to start up a conversation with the tired line "Where do you go to school at?" The co-ed, of course, was not overly impressed with his grammar or southern drawl but did answer his question. "Yale," she replied. The Alabama student takes a big deep breath and says again, "WHERE DO YOU GO TO SCHOOL AT!?" Did you hear that the Governor's Mansion in Arkansas burned down? Almost took out the whole trailer park!

Fast on Friday Evening By: John Griffin
With the month of August over with, Smoky Mountain Speedway had a special race on Friday night, Aug. 31st. The track ran the Limited Late Model Steel Heads for the first time this season. After qualifying and heat races had been completed, it was Bobby Griffin of Maryville taking the pole, and he turned it into taking the checkers. In the Feature race, Griffin did not have any trouble as he opened up a lead which he kept throughout the race. Following Griffin was Adam Beeler in 2nd, with Jason Welsham 3rd, Josh Colllins 4th, and David Crabtree 5th. The Thunder and Lightening Class ran for the first time this season with Warren McMahan taking the checkers, with Bobbie Comer 2nd, Robert Martin 3rd, and Johnathan Sims 4th. In the Mini Stock Feature, it was Derik Duggan, who lives in East Roane County taking the checkers in a close race with David Singleton 2nd, and Alex Squires 3rd. In the Street Stock Feature it was Travis Reno taking the checkers as he has been tough to beat this season. Reno was followed by Tim England in 2nd with Bradley Lewelling 3rd, and Lloyd Hall 4th. In the Topless Modified Feature it was Mike Lewis taking the checkers, with Keith Gregory running 2nd, and Eric Hux taking 3rd. The last race of the evening saw Marty Phillips taking the checkers in the Modified Mini Feature Event with Cody Hearon 2nd, and William Tallent 3rd. Pit Notes: Ty Dillion, who has raced at Smoky Mountain this year, won his first Truck Series Race Friday night at Atlanta. Congratulations goes out to Dillion. Doug Sophia has bought the I-40 Motorcross from Jill Varnell. Watch for improvements to the Motocross and also a new dirt track on the property. Good luck Doug.

decorating Outdoors for the fall season
Dried Cornstalk Arrangement Cornstalks happen to be one of the most popular arrangements out there at the moment. Simply take about 15 to 20 dried cornstalks and bunch them together with bailer's twine to secure. Leave the bailer's twine bare or add a colorful fall ribbon in burgundy, green, orange or any fall color. A couple of stacks of straw or hay can sit down in front and add additional appeal. Maybe a jack-o'-lantern or pot of mums can rest on top of the stacks to add more style. Cornstalks can be purchased at many cider mills, roadside vendors or landscaping companies that sell pumpkins and apples. Dried Indian Corncobs Dried Indian corncobs are really cute when tied to the center of a dried cornstalk bunch and really adds to the fall and harvest flair. If you are daring, grab some stalks from farmer Pete's field up the road when he isn't looking! These make for a spectacular focal point when they frame something such as a porch. Be sure to duplicate another on the opposite side. I like displaying mine against my red barn; this really adds for a unique country look. Pumpkin and Gourd Arrangement A simple assortment of pumpkins in different sizes and shapes along with a variety of gourds is a great way to sport fall decor around the outside of your home. Try layering and staggering different ones along your front porch steps. The look created here is timeless and very cozy. Try adding large baskets to the mix and fill them with twigs with berries and maybe an assortment of decorative gourds and small pumpkins. Wooden Craft Signs and Carvings Fall is the best time to display your favorite craft items outdoors. Craft shows are in full swing and there are many vendors selling wooden signs. If you are a good painter, try to painting your own decor items and craft signs. Verbally express your love for the fall season with signs such as "Gobblers Gather Here" or "Welcome Fall." Paint the saying on a turkey shape and add a stake. Pretty Fall Wreaths Wreaths are always popular all year round. They can be purchased almost anywhere and there are some really pretty homemade wreaths out there that many crafters have put together and sell at craft shows or boutiques. If you want to make your own, the best place to start is your local craft store. Starting with a grapevine wreath provides a good base. Adding berries, Indian corn, mini gourds, silk flowers and leaves is a way to really dress things up. You can top it off with a ribbon, if you like. Bring the Fall Colors Together With Plants Mums are definitely the plant of the fall season. With a huge variety of colors such as white, red, burgundy, yellow and orange, you are sure to find a color that will bring zing to your fall decor. Flowering cabbages are also a way to add a little more color to your area. If you don't have a lot of yard space, try buying some flower pots and add the mums and plants to your porch.

House cleaning made easy Wipe out the microwave after every use. If you take a damp cloth and quickly wipe the inside of the microwave each time, you’ll never have to scrub at stuck on food again. Dry dust every two days. Feather dusters look like toys to children and if you ask them to help you by giving them one to use on surfaces where no breakables are kept, it’s remarkable how much this helps. This is particularly true of small children who love pretending to be like mom. It also keeps all the surfaces dust-free so you aren’t Use bowl fresheners in the bathrooms. Scrubbing the toilet isn’t a job any of us like, so using the fresheners cuts down on how often it needs cleaned. Do laundry once a week. When everyone in the house knows that their laundry will be done within a day of them dumping it on the ever-growing pile of dirty clothing, they are more tempted to change clothes two or three times a day. Set one day of the week for washing, drying, pressing and folding clothes. Everyone puts their clothes away. Everyone in the home knows that on laundry day, they have to put their own clothes away. Saves Mom from having to do it. Have everyone clear their plate. If every family member brings their plate, utensils and glass to the sink from the table, it saves a few trips for mom. You can start this habit early, even when they are toddlers. Keep a mat by the back door for muddy shoes. If it’s rainy out, kids will be magnetically drawn to . Have them take their muddy boots off outside the door. Once the sun comes out, you can hose off the mat and your floors are still shiny clean. Keep a bottle of stain remover close. Have two bottles of stain remover in your home. One in the laundry area near the washing machine and the other is in the kitchen. If someone spills a portion of their dinner on their shirt or pants, they run to change, you can treat the spot immediately. This saves having to scrub at it later. Vacuum once a week. If you find that you need to vacuum each day to keep the carpets looking clean, consider a quick middle of the room run-over. Pull out the vacuum and just do the areas that need it. Leave the thorough in-and-behind-the-furniture vacuum job for one day of the week. Quick clean the refrigerator on garbage day. We tend to forget what we’ve put in the fruit and produce crispers until it’s too late and it’s started to sprout mold. If you do a quick check of the refrigerator the morning of garbage day, you won’t have a messy, runny bag of lettuce to tend to later. Keep a bottle of cleaner under the bathroom sink. This is one of the cleaning tips I picked up when I was first married. I keep a spray bottle along with some disposable paper towels under the bathroom sink. This way, if anyone in the family notices the sink needs a quick clean, they can simply pull out the supplies and do a fast wipe down. If you have curious little ones in the home, remember to lock it up. Clean mirrors everyday. The thing about having clean mirrors is that it instantly makes the entire room look better. Try it in the bathroom or a front entrance way and you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes, even if there’s some clutter in the room.

Mother, Interrupted:

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, even when the tree is way more well-behaved and definitely does not act like the apple—right?? By: Debra Carpenter
debra.carp@yahoo.com http://www.interruptedmum.blogspot.com http://www.facebook.com/MotherInterrupted I love when people tell me that my 2 year old daughter acts just like me. I prefer that they make this connection while she’s reciting her ABCs, counting, or doing something ridiculously cute. However, there are times when she acts less than wellbehaved, and somehow people still think this behavior resembles my own. I have a few questions about that, just to clarify my understanding. Bear with me. Does it really remind you of me when she throws a fit because there is no “chock-it” (chocolate) in her milk? Does it bring me to mind when you see her run around the coffee table in circles while singing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star?” Is there any connection between my behavior and hers when she flatly orders you to “Shut Up” after a gentle suggestion that she take a nap? Do I really change topics frequently during conversation, like, “Mama, Huckle Cat is on the table and—BOAT. I want boat.”? How does she remind you of me when she knows she’s done something wrong, and immediately upon seeing you approaching, blocks your view of her actions and says “No spanking, Mama. You no spank Molly”? Well, okay. I guess I can see a slight resemblance there. But-Mom, do you ever have a sense of déjà vu from my own childhood when you see her peel her diaper off in front of other people? When she refuses to eat anything but macaroni and cheese for dinner? When she tries to strangle the kitten that we so lovingly brought home—for HER? You do? Well, then. I suppose we have an interesting time ahead of us. In all seriousness, I am always flattered when someone thinks Molly is just like me. How could I not be? She is an incredible little girl. Whether she’s Miss Behaving or misbehaving, she is always my greatest joy. My eagerness to be compared to my daughter may also have to do with the fact that I spent the first year of her life being bombarded with statements from everyone (including our parents, strangers, friends, and family) about how much she looked like my husband. “My, my. That child looks like a female Michael.” “Goodness, if I didn’t know better, I’d think I was looking at a little Michael!” “Sorry, Debra, but that child looks just like her Daddy.” “He sure can’t deny her!” (Duh. We’re married. Try denying that, Michael.) And my personal favorite, when I try to bargain with the person about who Molly looks like: Me: “Yeah, she does resemble him…but don’t you think she has my eyes?” Them: “Nah, those are Daddy’s eyes. She’s got your eyebrows.” Me: “Eyebrows? What? No. Look at her lips. Now look at mine. Aren’t they similar?” Them: “No, honey, her lips look like Angelina Jolie’s.” So, even ol’ Angelina gets credit for my daughter’s good looks, but not me. Talk about UPLIFTING! Every now and then, some kind soul would lie to our faces and say she looked identical to me, but deep down, I knew the truth. This child is a physical clone of her father and a psychological clone of me. Good thing he’s handsome, and I am relatively mentally stable—oh look, a BOAT! I want boat!

ing ,told us that Christopher Columbus discovered America. What those books and teachings did not give credit to was the fact that Native Americans were already here first and truly discovered America. It also gave little mention to the fact that Nordic explorers had traveled down the eastern cost of Canada thousands of years earlier. Today, we celebrate Columbus day for what it accurately is. Columbus did discover the existence of the New World for Europeans who until then, believed the world was flat and ended somewhere in the Atlantic. And, the focus is more upon discovery of the "New World", and less upon Columbus himself. Did You Know? Columbus day is sometimes referred to as "Discoverer's Day". Some key facts (in case you forgot them since grade school): Columbus Discovered America in 1492. He originally set sail on August 3, 1492, but had trouble with the ships, stopping at the Canary Islands for a month. The ships left the Canary Islands on September 3,1492. He travelled with three ships: The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria While Columbus was an Italian, he could not find funding in Italy, so he turned to the King of Spain. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella provided the funding. Christopher Columbus did not land on the U.S. mainland. He landed on an island in the Caribbean. While many believe he landed on San Salvador, there is still debate on which island he originally landed on.
In fact, Jesus MADE everything in the world FOR you! In double fact, you are HERE because Jesus loves you! That's why he made YOU! In double fact, you are HERE because Jesus loves you! That's why he made YOU! If you take all the stories in the Bible and put them all together, and then you ask me what they are all about, this is what I will tell you... Jesus loves YOU! And more than anything in the world, Jesus wants to be with you, and you to be with Him – FOREVER! Jesus wants that so bad, He would do anything to make sure it happens. Even if it meant He would have to give His life to save you. And that's just what He did. That's what the Bible is all about. What was it again? Oh, yeah... JESUS LOVES YOU!!

creatures from the room. To protect your house from lightning, gather hazel tree branches on Palm Sunday and keep them in water. Add caraway seeds to chicken feed to keep poultry from wandering. Feed the seeds to homing pigeons to help them find their way back. Stuff fennel in your keyhole or hang it over your door to protect against witches. Never carry a hoe into the house. If you do so by mistake, carry it out again, walking backward to avoid bad luck. Never walk under a ladder, which is Satan's territory. If you must do it, cross your fingers or make the sign of the fig (closed fist, with thumb between index and middle fingers). If you give a steel blade to a friend, make the recipient pay you a penny to avoid cutting the friendship. Never give a knife as a housewarming present, or your new neighbor will become an enemy. Never pound a nail after sundown, or you will wake the tree gods. An empty hornets' nest, hung high, also will bring good luck to a house of any age. When you move to a new house, always enter first with a loaf of bread and a new broom. Never bring an old broom into the house.

www.RockwoodFallFestival.com It’s Muscadine Pickin Time in Kingston, Tennessee at Sam Martin’s Cove Vinyard! What are some of the Health Benefits of Muscadine Grapes? We reviewed the nutrients in the Muscadine grape that make it different than any other grape. Let’s take a look at how the nutrients can help you and some exciting studies on the health benefits of the Muscadine grape. Muscadine grapes have about 6 times more Resveratrol than standard grapes. Let's focus on some of the other nutrients in Muscadines and their health benefits. Muscadines take all the health benefits of the red grape and take it to a new level. A search at PubMed.Gov and you will find... Over 2,300 studies on Red Wine, Over 700 studies on Grape Seed, Over 550 studies on Red Grapes . Some of the Potential Health Benefits of Red Grapes and Red Wines: 1. Boosts Heart Function and Promotes a Healthy Heart 2. Helps Reduce or Balance Cholesterol Levels 3.Helps Regulate Blood Pressure 4.Boosts the Immune System 5. Protects Against Mild Memory Loss 4.Reduces Signs of Aging Muscadine grapes take all those positive health benefits of red grapes and bring it to the next level. To learn how Muscadine's improve on the health benefits of red grapes, let's look a little deeper into some of the unique nutrients in Muscadine Grapes. Ellagic acid is a polyphenol- more specifically it is a phenolic acid. In laymen terms, Ellagic acid is a compound found in some foods, with very strong antioxidant properties. Ellagic Acid is only found in one type of grape - Muscadine Grapes. The reason this is significant is that Ellagic Acid has been the focus of numerous studies for its possible anti-cancer and tumor fighting effects. Ellagic acid may aide in chemoprevention. Chemoprevention is a term that means to chemically prevent cancer from occurring, growing or metastasizing. There is great interest in chemoprevention (not to be confused with chemotherapy) because it may be the best way to fight cancer, stop it from growing before it reaches a level that causes problems. On September 1, 2007 the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) published the results of their study on Muscadine grape skins in the Cancer Research Journal. Let's look at some direct quotes from the study... "Laboratory experiments show that an extract of the skin of muscadine grapes can inhibit growth of prostate cancer cells in the laboratory." "Using a series of human prostate cancer cells, representing different stages of prostate cancer progression, the researchers showed that Muscadine Skin Extract (MSKE) significantly inhibits the growth of cancerous, but not normal, prostate cells, primarily by inducing a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Programmed cell death is one of the mechanisms the body uses to rid itself cells with unrepaired genetic damage before those cells can duplicate themselves. MSKE suggests that the active compounds in this extract may inhibit tumor development at very early stages." -National Institute of Health, 9/1/2007, Unique Grape Skin Extract Inhibits Prostate Cancer Cell Growth in the Laboratory Inhibition of Prostate Cancer Growth by Muscadine Grape Skin Extract and Resveratrol through Distinct Mechanisms, 9/1/2007, Cancer Research Dr. Linus Pauling, the winner of two Nobel Prizes, “You can trace every disease and every ailment to a mineral deficiency”… The famous Dr. Joel Wallach, whose research helped eliminate over 900 diseases, says “It’s not what you eat; it’s what you don’t eat! I like the woods In autumn When dry leaves hide the ground, When the trees are bare And the wind sweeps by With a lonesome rushing sound. I can rustle the leaves In autumn And I can make a bed In the thick dry leaves That have fallen From the bare trees overhead.

When troubles come in our lives, and they do, and we feel like we are drowning in them, no solutions, and seemly, no good ending in sight; I have found in God's holy word that in the past— a long ago past—that people took courage from the precious words spoken by God and directions for them and they believe and obeyed and found peace and happiness in their lives! So, how about you, will you try God's words, too? Lord, I thank Thee for always standing close to me and all others. I thank Thee for holding my hands when the days get so dark and the storms are raging. I know I'm safe when I am in thy presence and when I call out to Thee, you will always answer!

A 10 year old little girl was asked by another classmate, "what is it like to be a Christian?". The girl replied, "it's like being a pumpkin. God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then he cuts open the top and scoops out all of the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc., and then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see."

351st Civil Engineering SQ - (SAC) Whiteman Air Force Base Knob Noster, Missouri
PETE SEMANICK
Whiteman AFB was a pleasant assignment and not much went on as far as fires or plane crashes. The primary mission was the Minuteman Missile complex surrounding the base. We had 150 missile silos and 10 mission control centers. The helicopters were primarily used for transporting crews to the control centers. The T-29 transported the VIP’s on various TDY’s and allowed pilots to get their flying in so they could keep current on flying status, and the U-3B was used for short trips such as SAC HQ. Duty at Whiteman was slow and laid back. Fire Chief Darrell Saul was a politician and loved to play golf. Most of the time if Saul was needed he could be found at the on-base golf course or Officer’s Club. In fact he was one of the few Fire Chiefs to live on base in government quarters, but after I had been there a few months a new Wing Commander arrived and promptly moved him move off base. Every day at noontime one could find Chief Saul in his office with four or five of the troops (civilian and military) playing poker. In fact, I had to inform my military guys that playing poker with Chief Saul was forbidden. This didn’t go over too well with him, but he knew I meant it. As was normal back then, I was again left without a position, as I had been Fire Chief at Fairford and High Wycombe. A decision was made to assign me as Noncommissioned Officer in Charge, Technical Services Branch, which promoted me to Senior Master Sergeant and allowed me to occasionally pull rank on the Chief. As ranking military, I had a free hand in supervising the military and I reminded them often of their military responsibilities. I had top quality Technical Sergeant Harley (Roy) Sellars (now retired CMSGT) assisting me. Roy and I convinced Chief Saul that he should send us to the annual Fire Protection Conference in Memphis in 1965. He normally attended by himself but agreed to our request. At the end of the week conference Roy and I decided to take a side trip to Nashville to attend the Grand Ole’ Opry. Chief Saul couldn’t believe we wanted to waste our time going to Nashville, the truth being that Saul hated country western music. One day I was able to arrange a round trip hop on the U-3B to SAC HQ to visit a friend of mine, Captain Compte, who had been the Administrative Officer at RAF High Wycombe Air Base. We often talked about fishing in the states. I told him that if our paths ever crossed in the states that I would catch him a nice fish and would personally deliver it to him. Fortunately, prior to my stateside assignment, he received his assignment orders for Offutt HQ at Omaha, Nebraska and mine was Whiteman. I had a favorite fishing hole in Clinton, Missouri at the Hazel Pogue Wildlife Refuge. There were several small crystal clear strip coal mine lakes full of largemouth bass, crappie, blue gills and catfish. I probably spent as much time there as I did on the base. One day the fishing was really good and I snagged into a five-pound large mouth bass. Normally, I would take one or two nice size bass home for the Sunday noon meal so there was nothing different about this one. On my way home I remembered what I had told Capt. Compte so when I got home I placed the fish in the freezer and wrapped it well so it wouldn’t get freezer burn.

The coupon page is a great new service which will benefit the business owner, the reader and many others through out Roane County. By having all the coupons grouped together on one page gives the reader one page to view all the great deals from our local businesses. This will allow them to cut out the whole page and take it with them rather than only having small cut up coupons that get lost or torn easily. The business owner will benefit by having there coupon noticed more often with better return, face it people love coupons. Placing your coupon on the coupons page rather than on your ad gives you more room for extra information and keeps people from cutting out your ad so others have a chance of seeing it also. I wanted to start this page as a way to give back to the advertisers that we cherish so much. The last thing we want is businesses paying for ads and not getting results. If you have a coupon in The Roane Reader I want to make sure they get used each and every month, ensuring that you are getting results from your support with us. I think this is a great way to get people to notice your business. Ok, so these are two great reasons to buy a spot on our coupons page but I have an even better reason to claim your space as well. Every dollar collected for your space on our coupons page will be donated to a local charity or cause. The Roane Reader will donate all the money to a different charity or cause each month. The coupons page will also be a great way to give back to the community as well. The Roane Reader feels very strongly about this great service and hope lots of businesses participate. Having your name on this page will show your support and if you don't have a special running that month you can simply sponsor a spot on the page to make a donation to the cause.

Old wife's tales
"Yesterday’s Tomorrow" by: Travis Harmon
“The seasons are what a symphony ought to be: four perfect movements in harmony with each other.” – Arthur Rubenstein Football has forcefully arrived. With that first kickoff, the attitude of summer quickly faded. Fall is always right there waiting patiently at the door. With such beautiful displays of nature, the fall colors soon get pushed aside to more brisk afternoons and snow flurries. It’s the beautiful cycle of our Godbreathed ecosystem, that sustains the very life and growth necessary for human existence. God knew that constant change was a necessary catalyst for our life cycle. However, we often forget. We are taught as babies, that our happiness is only found within our comfort. We are raised with examples that everything we achieve is designed to make us feel better. So we become adults that are very set in our youthful, predetermined ways. And things never change. God gave us a beautiful picture of how life is a constant growing, changing cycle. We choose however to pick our comforts, and remain unchallenged. Oftentimes, we die with the same mindsets we developed as teenagers. I’d like to challenge you, that as you experience the changing of our seasons, to think about the aspects of your life that need change. Evaluate your routines, habits, and traditions, and ask yourself why those things haven’t changed in decades. Maybe God has something better for you? If He did, would you be willing to do what it takes, to make it happen? Change is terrifying. We are creatures of habit. We’re often reminded that our old habits die hard. But we will never grow if we aren’t willing to change. The sad reality is, if we aren’t growing then we’re dying. Is your comfort level worth the expense of a much more abundant and vibrant life that God has called you to? It may be your environment, friends, attitudes, habits or even the culture that you find yourself in. What steps do you need to take to accomplish the change God is leading you to? Bob Dylan put it best in 1964 when he said “The times they are a-changin.’” How much more rapidly our world changes today! We all admit we would like to leave our world a better place than we found it, but how do we do that? It begins by taking the first step. Fight your apathy. Fight your habits. Fight your powerless traditions. Seek life. Chase hope. Pursue wisdom. When we set ourselves in a new direction, God often surprises us with new opportunities and challenges that we’d never imagined! It’s when we take that freedom, and use it to challenge the complacencies of the world, that we can truly change our world. If you never challenge the world, you will never change the world. Don’t just sit back and watch the seasons change. Be the change. Today is yesterday’s tomorrow that you prayed for. Today’s the day.

Laundry should never be done on Sundays for there will surely be a terrible stain, tear or worse in the week ahead. The best time to plant flowers is in the increase of the moon. A mild winter lies ahead if onions dug from the garden at harvest time have thin skins. Any women who desires to have order in her home must allow sage to flourish in her garden. Stir cake from you and you will stir your troubles away. A cake baked in the morning will rise, a cake baked in the afternoon will drop. To make cake light, it must always be stirred the same way. Pastry must be rolled an uneven number of times otherwise it will be tough. Every scrap of pastry must be baked or there will be an unwanted expense. Cold hands and a warm heart make the best pastry. A thunderstorm will addle eggs and sour any milk that’s left out. Before a young girl bakes her first loaf of bread, her hands should be rubbed in sugar so that she may always make good, sweet bread. Stir bread away from you for good luck, trouble will come if you stir toward you. Evergreens should be taken down on Old Christmas Day (January 6th) or ill-luck will follow. A clean pot should be kept in an empty oven, this will ensure there will always be at least a little food to cook in it. When making the bed, don’t interrupt your work or you will spend a restless night in it. Stabbing needles through yarn balls will bring bad luck to anyone who wears something made from that yarn. Rosemary planted by the doorstep will keep evil away…put salt on the doorstep of a new house and no evil can enter. If a new bride should quietly take her mother’s dishcloth, she will never be homesick.
