My Daddy, the Veteran FRANK LEMONS
Mama and Daddy had 6 kids in 8 years. The reason it wasn’t 6 kids in 6 years is because daddy was in the Army during World War II. Daddy was so proud to have been in the Army, and his favorite past time was talking about the war and him being stationed in Japan. Daddy said he broke his ankle and was in the hospital when his company was sent out, and that was what probably saved him from dying in Japan. Daddy would laugh as he told us funny stories that he witnessed and participated in. All the grand kids admired his stories, too because they didn’t know anyone else who had been in World War II. My favorite story was how he and his company were on a train, in the middle of nowhere. They were very cold and almost starved to death. The train rounded a bin, and they saw a big tent setup near the tracks. It was a Salvation Army tent. Why is Election Day on a Tuesday? Ever wonder why Americans always vote in federal elections on Tuesdays? According to NPR, there are a few reasons—including a little something to do with the horse and buggy. Between 1788 and 1845, states decided their own voting dates. Senate historian Don Ritchie told NPR that strategy resulted in chaos, a “crazy quilt of elections” held all across the country at different times to pick the electors—the white, male property owners who would cast their votes for president on the first Wednesday of December. In 1792, a law was passed mandating that state elections be held within a 34-day period before that day, so most elections took place in November. (Society was mostly agrarian; in November, the harvest was finished but winter hadn’t yet hit, making it the perfect time to vote.) The glacial pace of presidential elections wasn’t a huge issue in the late 18th and early 19th centuries—communication was slow, so results took weeks to announce anyway—but with the advent of the railroad and telegraph, Congress decided it was time to standardize a date. Monday was out, because it would require people to travel to the polls by buggy on the Sunday Sabbath. Wednesday was also not an option, because it was market day, and farmers wouldn’t be able to make it to the polls. So it was decided that Tuesday would be the day that Americans would vote in elections, and in 1845, Congress passed a law that presidential elections would be held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

Thanksgiving Funnies When a music student brought his French horn to my shop for repair, he complained that the instrument “felt stuffy” and he couldn’t blow air through it. But when I tested the instrument, the horn was completely blocked. After much probing and prodding, a small tangerine dropped out of the bell. “Oh,” said the musician when I handed him the fruit. Many women are finding out just how much fun shooting handguns can be. But they are intimidated when they walk into gun ranges because of the way the smell, look, and are treated. This is no longer "a mans world" when it comes to handguns! Family Fun Indoor Range and Shooting for Women Alliance understand this all to well. Under their direction Women of a Different Caliber will be hosting Girls just want to have fun. This is being held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month starting in June! The time will be from 5pm - 9pm. Range fee will be $5 per girl (ages 12 and up). Your first target is free. Additional targets are $1 each. Girls can also get a 1 hour private lesson for a $50 donation. Pre registration is required for private lessons. This is a great time for your ladies groups, co-workers, mom and daughter fun, or simply with your besties. There will be a safety course for those 12 to16 years of age so be sure to arrange your times now. This is ladies only...no men allowed! But do not worry guys...we got you covered. Big, Bad, Black Friday It’s the the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of Nov.). Since 1932, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the U.S., and most major retailers open very early (and more recently during overnight hours) and offer promotional sales. There have been reports of violence occurring between shoppers on Black Friday. Since 2006, there have been 7 reported deaths and 98 injuries throughout the United States. It is common for prospective shoppers to camp out over the Thanksgiving holiday in an effort to secure a place in front of the line and thus a better chance at getting desired items. This poses a significant safety risk (such as the use of propane and generators in the most elaborate cases, and in general, the blocking of emergency access and fire lanes, causing at least one city to ban the practice.)

6 Black Friday Deals That Usually Aren’t As Good As They Seem
It's tempting to do just about anything to get the gift your kid covets and your wallet will appreciate. But despite the 40 percent of Americans who believe the biggest sales of the season are on Black Friday, the best time to purchase toys is the two weeks leading up to Christmas. You'll find a lot of toy sales closer to Christmas as retailers start clearing up inventory says a consumer savings expert. Considering parents spend an average of $271 per child on Christmas gifts, waiting a couple of weeks could save you a few precious bucks. The one exception: If you're looking for the hottest new toy (like a self-balancing scooter board) it may be worth scouting for sales on Black Friday. These popular items sometimes sell out closer to the holidays. Name-brand TVs Some TVs are made specifically for Black Friday. So we see low prices, but they may not have certain features. Popular companies like Sony and Samsung have manufactured derivative TVs in previous years. Here's a good way to tell: Research the TV model number. The week leading up to the Super Bowl. Retailers push to move inventory, and big screens run 5 to 10 percent cheaper than they do during the three months before and after the game. The post-holiday season is the most competitive time for the fitness industry to snag your business by making big markdowns on equipment and workout apparel. If you're part of the 76 percent of men and 87 percent of women who pledge to drop pounds in the New Year, you'll find the year's deepest discounts on exercise equipment in January, with fitness gear sales ranging from 40 to 90 percent off. Digital cameras Hold off until late January or February, after the International Consumer Electronic Show. It's a popular trade show where different brands are releasing the newest products with the most updated, coolest features. If you spot a gadget discount on Black Friday, investigate the typical retail price before buying. Stores may announce "30 percent off" a certain model, but sometimes base that discount on the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP). The average American family pays little to no income tax The average American family pays little to no federal income tax due to tax credits and deductions. Payroll taxes, excise taxes, and sales taxes hit the average American the hardest. In America, the bottom 40% of earners pay a negative tax rate on average (they get money back), and the next 40% have tax rates in the single digits on average. In total, roughly 50% of Americans don’t pay any federal income tax at all under the current tax code. However, this very progressive Federal Income Tax system becomes less progressive when paired with the rather flat / regressive federal payroll tax, state sales tax, and excise taxes. When we then factor in the general cost of living (think car payments, healthcare, debt, unsubsidized child care, mortgages, etc, which all burden our poorest disproportionally) we find a growing wealth gap due to the rich saving more and having higher returns, while lower income households extend themselves on credit. Thus, while taxes are very generous to the average family by some measures, even to the extent that half of America doesn’t even pay the Federal Income Tax, flat / regressive taxes and other costs offset the gains from progressive taxes, tax credits, and deductions.

Fastest in History The fastest racehorse on record is Winning Brew. She was a 2-year-old thoroughbred filly in 2008 when she set the record at the Penn National Race Course in Grantville, Penn. Winning Brew covered a 1/4-mile track in just under 21 seconds, reaching a top speed of nearly 44 mph. Winnin Brew was trained by Francis Vitale. Her jockey for the race in which she broke the record was Joanne McDaid. Despite her record-breaking run, Winning Brew does not have a particularly distinguished racing record. To neutralize odors in your garbage disposal pour 1/4 cup of Arm & Hammer baking soda down garbage disposal followed by a tiny amount of water. Let stand for a few minutes,then run water and disposal to rinse.
Rustic Veggie Pizza
3 Tbsp. Ital. Vinaigrette Dressing 1/3 cup olives, sliced 1 onion, cut in thin wedges 1 can refrigerated thin pizza crust For smelly plastic food containers toss a ball of newspaper into 1 yellow pepper, cut in strips 1 cup Mozzarella Cheese container and seal lid. Smell will be gone in a few days, stronger zucchini, halved, sliced crosswise 4 oz. Crumbled Feta Cheese smells may take longer. 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes 1 cup baby arugula To remove coffee stains from cups or mugs, Take a lemon rind and Heat oven to 425º. Heat 1 Tbsp. dressing in large skillet. Add onions; cook and stir on medium heat sprinkle salt on white side and rub stained cups or mugs with it. Then 5 min. or until crisp-tender. Add peppers & zucchini; cook and stir 5 min. or until onions are golden wash and rinse. brown and peppers are crisp. Remove from heat; stir in tomatoes and olives. Unroll pizza crust on To make kitchen clean up easier while preparing meals, put used baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray; pat into 14x10-½ inch rectangle. Fold over edges of dough utensils, bowls, etc. in a sink of hot soapy water to clean as you go. to form ½ inch-wide rim. Bake 5 min. Brush with remaining dressing; top with vegetable mixture and cheeses. Bake 12-14 min. or until edges of crust are golden brown. Top with arugula. Another way to clean tarnish off silverware is to line a glass dish Cold Pea Salad Recipe with aluminum foil, then mix 2 tablespoons of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda with 1 teaspoon of salt. Then sprinkle mixture over 16-oz frozen petite peas (unthawed) 2/3 cup mayonnaise foil and fill with hot water. Place silverware in solution and let soak 6 oz almonds, rinsed, chopped 2 tsp yellow curry powder for 10 minutes, then wash, rinse and dry with a soft cloth. ½ cup chopped green onions Salt and pepper to taste 8 oz chopped water chestnuts To store silverware after cleaning and to prevent tarnishing put some packs of silica gel beads (moisture packs) or chalk in storage box Combine the frozen peas, green onions, almonds, and water chestnuts. Mix together the mayonnaise and curry powder in a separate bowl. Gently fold the mayonnaise mixture into peas. Add salt and freshly with silverware. ground black pepper to taste. Serves 6. To clean dishwashers buy two small packs of unsweetened lemon Maple Orange Glazed Carrots Kool-Aid, pour 1 pack into each detergent cup then run the 1 lb carrots, peeled, sliced 2 Tbsp unsalted butter dishwasher on the hottest longest cycle. 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup maple syrup To fluff up comforters or pillows , drop 2 or3 new tennis balls in the 1/3 cup orange juice 1/2 teaspoon orange zest dryer on low heat for 10 minutes. Penny Pinchers To unclog kitchen drain, pour 1 cup of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and 1 cup of white vinegar into drain to loosen clog. Let stand for a few minutes then plunge , run hot water down drain to be sure the drain is open. If you have a double sink be sure to plug one side before plunging. Keep a bottle of Dawn original blue dish detergent on hand, it's a great degreaser as well as a spot remover. Clean windows. Make a cleaner by mixing three teaspoons of vinegar to one quart of warm water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray onto the glass, wiping it dry with crumpled newspapers. To prevent streaking, don’t clean while the sun is on the window. Save your little pieces of bar soap in a liquid hand soap bottle with some water in it. Shake it up and use it as liquid hand soap. I make my own hand soap by diluting Joy liquid Antibacterial soap with water in a pump bottle. Use butter or real mayonnaise or ashes from cigarettes to get rid of the watermarks on furniture. Rub with the grain using a soft cloth. Mix together 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar, 1/4 cup water, 1/2 tsp. liquid soap, a few drops of olive oil, and 5 drops of either lemon or orange essential oil. Use to clean wood. Whenever I purchase a box of S.O.S Pads, I immediately take a pair of scissors and cut each pad into halves. After years of having to throw away rusted and unused and smelly pads, I finally decided that this would be much more economical. And now a box of S.O.S pads last me indefinitely! In fact, I have noticed that the scissors get sharpened this way! Roach Patrol..Mix equal parts of boric acid powder and sugar, cornmeal or flour. Pour this mixture into lids or small open containers and place in the areas, such as behind the refrigerator or backs of cabinets in the pantry, or underneath the kitchen sink, but NOT on kitchen or bathroom counters or floors! You also can put this mixture into an empty catsup squeeze bottle and “poof” the mixture into hard-to-reach corners or cracks. Keep this away from pets and small children. Clean piano keys. Use an eraser to remove marks from the ivory keys. Sew buttons on heavy coats. Use floss as a long lasting thread. Unclog a drain. Clear the sink drain by dropping three Alka Seltzer tablets down the drain followed by a cup of Heinz White Vinegar. Let set for 5 min. and flush the drain with very hot water.

Who Was Gary Fawkes? In 1605 Guy Fawkes, plotted to kill King James I by blowing up the Houses of Parliament (the Gunpowder Plot). Since then England has commemorated the event, on 5th November, with bonfires and fireworks. Occasionally, over the last few years, you will hear people ask “Where is Guy Fawkes when you really need him?” I walked passed a burnt out building with a broken sign saying “Fireworks” How right they were. A policeman arrested two kids on bonfire night. One for drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. He charged one and let the other one off! How many God-fearing, tax-paying, law-abiding men in Las Vegas does it take to light a bonfire? Both of them. How is it that one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box on November 5th to start your Guy Fawkes bonfire? They say that you should never go back to a firework once lit. Our garden has been out of bounds since 1990. Latecomer: Am I too late for the bonfire? Host: No jump up there on the sticks, there is room next to that Guy. How many Microsoft programmers does it take to start the November 5th bonfire? Zero Microsoft declares darkness to be a new standard. The local sheriff was looking for a deputy, so Gomer who was not exactly the sharpest nail in the bucket went in to try out for the job. "Okay," the sheriff drawled, "Gomer, what is 1 and 1?" "11" he replied. The sheriff thought to himself, "That's not what I meant, but he's right." "What two days of the week start with the letter 'T'?" "Today and tomorrow." He was again surprised that Gomer supplied a correct answer that he had never thought of himself. "Now Gomer, listen carefully: Who killed Abraham Lincoln?" November Thanksgiving A Truly American Story
Looking back approaching 400 years one can see why those first Pilgrims had a lot to be thankful for. The Mayflower, made it across the Atlantic Ocean. We can only ponder how many perished in similar boats before their success. And we can think of all those boats which have been lost with all hands since. The Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620 can be grateful that Iroquois Native Americans were not more numerous and more belligerent. The Pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower were members of the English Separatist Church. They fled from persecution in England and took the opportunity of a better life in America. Puritans negotiated with a London stock company to finance the pilgrimage to America. However, 2/3 of those aboard were not Separatists, they just went along for the adventure and the opportunity. That first winter on 1620 was severe and by the fall of 1621 almost half of the original 102 settlers had died of hardship. However, the vegetables were new to the Pilgrims and they needed help from the Indians to grow crops such as maize and pumpkins. Thanks to the skill of native Indians like Squanto, and good fortune, the harvest of 1621 was bountiful. Governor William Bradford famously sent 'four men fowling'. They returned with deer, wild ducks and geese. While they probably did not have turkey, the Pilgrims coined the word 'turkey' as a generic term for any wild fowl.

An assistant at your disposal when all is over You always tell yourself that you will only buy things that you need but you know that’s not what really happens. At the end of your shopping spree, you have 5 bags (or more) in your hands. And all you want is to have a private driver to grab your bags and take you home.

He called two days later and asked her come back to the office. The news was not good. She had an inoperable brain tumor. She had, at the most, six months to live. Brad was devastated by the news. They decided to make the most of the time they had left, so they booked a cruise to the South Pacific. They flew to San Francisco to board the ship. The first two stops were in Hawaii and they had a wonderful time. For the first time in months Kate was smiling again. On the morning after they left Hawaii they went back to their cabin after breakfast. They walked in and were surprised by the bright blue reflections on the walls and ceiling. Sitting on a small table in front of the door leading to their patio was the antique blue milk bottle. They smiled at each other, held hands, walked over to the bottle, and both of them touched it. In 1960 John F. Kennedy (D) defeats Richard Nixon (R) by 84 Electoral Votes and won the popular vote by .2%. The election remains one of the most famous election nights in history. As the early returns poured in, Kennedy opened a large lead in the popular and electoral vote. However, as later returns came in from the Western states, Nixon began to close the gap. It was not until the next afternoon that Nixon finally conceded the election and Kennedy claimed victory. A sample of how close the election was can be seen in California; Kennedy appeared to have carried the state by 37,000 votes when all of the voting precincts reported, but when the absentee ballots were counted a week later, Nixon came from behind to win the state by 36,000 votes. In the national popular vote Kennedy beat Nixon by 0.1 – the closest popular-vote margin of the twentieth century. Kennedy carried 11 states by 3% or less, while Nixon won 5 states by the same margin. In 2000 George W. Bush (R) defeats Al Gore (D) by 5 Electoral Votes but loses the popular vote by .5%. The U.S. presidential election of 2000 was between Al Gore, then-Vice President, and Bush narrowly won the election, with 271 electoral votes to Gore’s 266. The election featured a controversy over who won Florida’s 25 electoral votes (and thus the presidency), the recount process in that state, and the unusual event that the losing candidate had received 543,816 more popular votes than the winner.

Reports that one vote matters
•During the American Revolution, anti-British sentiment was high in many colonies. A bill was presented to the Continental Congress which would have abolished English as the official American language in favor of German. The bill was defeated by one vote. •In 1845, the Senate voted 26 to 25 to admit Texas to the union. Indiana's Senator Hannigan changed his mind and voted in favor of its admission. And, the senator himself had won his election to office by only one vote! •Rutherford B. Hayes was elected President of the United States in 1876 by an electoral vote of 185 to 184. •Andrew Johnson retained his office by one vote. The final tally against him was 35 to 19, but a two-thirds majority of the votes cast was needed to oust him from office, thus a 36-to-18 result was required. The vote was not to impeach Johnson (which had already been done); the vote was to remove him from office. Folks have come to think of these terms as interchangeable, but they're not. (President Clinton was impeached, but he was not removed from office either.) •On November 8, 1923, the leaders of the tiny Nazi party met in a Munich tavern and elected Adolf Hitler as their leader — by a margin of one vote. •In 1839, Marcus "Landslide" Morton was elected governor of Massachusetts by one vote. Of the 102,066 votes cast by the people of that state, he received exactly 51,034. Had his count been 51,033, the election would have been thrown into the Legislature, where he probably would not have won. "Landslide" also made the record books in 1842 when he won the same office again by one vote, this time in the Legislature. (In those days, Massachusetts governors were elected for terms of one year.) And some of the claims made have something to them, but should be dismissed anyway: •Rutherford B. Hayes was elected President in 1876 by one vote, but it was due to election chicanery and backroom deal-making and thus should not be counted as an honestly arrived-at result. Democrat Samuel Tilden won the popular vote by a quarter million votes and came up one electoral vote shy of a majority because twenty electoral votes were under dispute. A Congressionally-appointed commission composed of eight Republicans and seven Democrats voted along party lines, awarding all twenty of those disputed votes to Hayes. •In 1941, the active-service component of the Selective Service Act of 1940 was extended by a margin of one vote, 203 to 202. The original act provided that a drafted man should serve for one year and then spend ten years in the reserves, subject to call-up in case of war. The amendment lengthened every draftee's service from one year to two-and-a-half years. This close vote didn't save Selective Service from being axed; what was voted on was how long a draftee would have to serve if called up. Had the amendment been defeated, the original act would have remained in force; there was no expiry date on it, and nothing needed to be renewed to keep it going. No one knows where the "just weeks before Pearl Harbor was attacked" element enters into things. The vote was held in August 1941, four months before Pearl Harbor. And some claims we'll never get to the bottom of: •A one vote change in each precinct in Illinois would not have defeated John F. Kennedy in 1960. In the 1960 presidential election, John F. Kennedy bested Richard Nixon by a mere 118,000 popular votes (out of 68 million ballots cast), and Kennedy also won the state of Illinois by a margin of less than 9,000 votes. However, the key electoral vote total wasn't nearly as close as the popular vote: Kennedy came out ahead of Nixon by a 303 to 219 margin, so even if Nixon had taken Illinois (and its 27 electoral votes), Kennedy would still have won a majority in the electoral college. Even the charge that a one vote difference in each precinct in Illinois would have changed that state's results is hard to prove or disprove because it's widely understood there was a fair bit of cheating carried out by both sides over those 27 electoral votes. What the numbers eventually tallied out to be is almost immaterial, as both Nixon's and Kennedy's factions were reportedly stuffing every ballot box in sight. That year, the motto in Illinois seemed to be: "One man, one vote - and then some." A statement from Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley captured the essence of what was going on in that place and time: "One of their precincts, outside of Peoria, where there are only 50 votes, just announced 500 votes for Nixon."

The invitation has been extended, "The case for Christ" is a book I've just read; Asking us to come inside, At first I approached it with feeling of dread. To attend the wedding supper of Jesus and His bride. How can anyone question the Bible's integrity? It is true; it can only be accepted in its entirety. Are our lamps all trimmed and burning? For our journey we need oil. Minute discrepancies were mentioned, but there were always explanations; The Holy Spirit is our road map; From scholars of the Bible, who were also receivers of God's plan of salvation. The times and circumstances, they studied with zeal We don't need to strive nor toil. But their personal experiences were their main appeal. The ten virgins were invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb; Five had not the Holy Spirit, for they knew not the Great I Am. I had no doubt how the book would end. Though He had knocked so many times, The Bible is my mainstay; on it I totally depend. When I hunger for truth and wisdom, upon the Bible I feed; They would never let Him in; The reading within, I know, is all I will ever need. They preferred to keep on working, trying hard to pay for sin. So, when He came they were not ready, Nov. 23rd My God I turn to, as His Words unfold, The greatest story that has ever been told. --------------------------Kayden goes to his pediatrician every month, to St. Judes affiliate in Johnson City every month, he has a home nurse visit weekly, and has to go to St. Judes in Memphis every 3 months. Although the brain tumor has shrunk, it’s still there. Please continue to pray for Kayden and for God to completely heal him.
Kayden Christopher is receiving his chemo orally and is presently doing good. The latest MRI shows the tumor has shrunk even more. The tumor is still inoperable, and he has lost some of his hearing because of the chemo. A guy looked at my Corvette the other day and said I wonder how Jimmie Johnson was just sitting many people could have been fed for the money that sports car cost. in the Drivers Lounge chatting I replied I am not sure, it fed a lot of families in Bowling Green, with Dale Earnhardt Jr, drinking Kentucky who built it, it fed the people who make the tires, it fed his Diet Mountain Dew and the people who made the components that went into it, it fed the minding his own business when people in the copper mine who mined the copper for the wires, it all of a sudden Kyle Busch fed people in Decatur IL. at Caterpillar who make the trucks that comes in and WHACK!! knocks haul the copper ore. It fed the trucking people who hauled it from him off the stool and onto the the plant to the dealer and fed the people working at the dealership floor. and their families. BUT,... What Are the Requirements to Become a Race Car Driver?
Most race car drivers go to racing school and all have typical driver’s licenses, too. If you’re thinking about the “big leagues”, such as Formula One, it’s best to start the training very early. A lot of drivers start learning the fundamentals of how to drive race cars when they are fourteen or fifteen. As well, many race go-karts before they are fourteen or fifteen, in order to access the right qualifications for admission into driving schools. So, most experts recommend go-karting as a first step. If you show a lot of talent in go-karting, you’ll be able to distinguish yourself as an up-and-coming talent and then go from there. It’s possible to get noticed by the right people when you win a lot of karting races. It’s safe to say that many racing world bigwigs hunt for talent by checking out the best new go-kart talents and then grooming them for stardom in Formula One or other types of auto racing. In fact, this is how British racer Lewis Hamilton, who drives in Formula One, got his start! He was noticed by a powerful racing team manager, Ron Dennis, and the rest is history. Now, Lewis is famous, rich and one of the most talked about people in England. His name is known worldwide. If you’re interested in getting the right qualifications, it’s best to reach out to a driving school in your area. Also, if you’re young, talk to your parents about the possibility of getting involved in go-karting. The sooner you get going with this, the better. You’ll need plenty of talent, determination and focus. If you have the willpower and ability, you may have what it takes to race cars professionally. Formula One is the most elite of all racing types. However, it isn’t the only option. Other examples of racing leagues to consider include Formula E (these race cars are electric), Nascar and IndyCar.

Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated on a different day than in the US, on the second Monday in October (the observance of the day began in 1879). 8 Things You Should Know About Parents of Childhood Cancer 1. You do not know what I am feeling. This isn’t a bad thing; I hope you NEVER know what I am feeling. I would never wish upon even my most hated enemy the cards we have been dealt. I sat in a hospital room and listened to a doctor I had met 5 minutes before tell me that my daughter had the second most dangerous tumor he had ever seen. Those words will never sink in. Never. Unless you have been told that your child is now going to be in a life threatening battle where you will be making life altering decisions then no, you do not know what is inside my head and how my heart feels. And that is ok. 2. Please do not attack me. It is hard enough to accept this fate without you waging a war on what my child eats, drinks, wears, what I use to clean, or how much they exercise. I promise that they aren’t eating McDonald’s every day or shoveling sugar by the spoonful’s into their mouth. I am not pouring roundup in their sandbox and we don’t sit under tanning bed lamps for fun. I may allow a treat once in a while because, let’s face it, she has given up enough, and I pick my battles on the account that I have bigger decisions to make. That is my right, and you don’t get a say. Right now I need a friend and I need support not a critic. If you want to critique or judge how I raise my child with cancer then you may do so in silence or politely excuse yourself as my friend. 3. Yes, I have heard your miracle cure. You name it I have heard it. From mystery berries to magic urine it all has been presented to me in one way or another. As a mom of course I have researched every treatment possible. You can’t hear the words “Brain tumor” and not turn to the internet, medical experts, or non-conventional options. So when you see a mom standing in line at the grocery store with her beautiful bald child say to yourself, “This is not the time to repeat an article I read during my morning internet browsing session.” Just look at the child, smile, and then tell the mom how precious her baby is and if you really want to help, ask if they have a somewhere you can follow progress and post support. 4. Never ask “What is the prognosis?” I answer this the same way every time. “I don’t know.” Do you know yours? Why is this so important? Would you feel worse for me to know that my child might die in nine months as opposed to possibly early adulthood? The fact is that childhood cancer shortens your life span. By how much, it will vary depending on type of cancer, treatment plans, genetics, and well just downright luck of the draw. Treatment options buy time and can send the cancer into remission but that does not mean the child has been cured. Many of these treatment options have side effects that will be lifelong and some can even cause secondary cancers years later. As a mom I now have to face this fact. I now have to wake up every morning knowing that I will most likely out live my baby. Please do not ask this question. Ever. 5. I am not as strong as you think. Just because I keep my composure when most can’t does not mean I have this super human power. Many times I have cried alone in the dark or in my car. I hide my pain in front of my children because I subscribe to theory and practice that my daughter will draw her strength from somewhere and it should be from the person who loves her more than anyone. She has seen me cry, and we have cried together. Most of the time I can stay strong for her but then there are times she needs to see me sad, she needs to know how much I hurt for her. Just as I am strong for her she is equally if not more so for me. The strength you see in me is my love for her shining through. Because of her love I am able to get through every day and no bad news is too much for us to handle together. We are a team. My daughter and I before her first radiation treatment 6. Please do not feel sorry for me. Yes, I my daughter has cancer. Yes, she has suffered a lot because of her cancer. But my daughter is AMAZING and she is a fighter. We are beyond blessed to wake up to her sweet smile and kind disposition every single day. Our house is full of joy and laughter. We spend our time looking for ways to celebrate life in any way we can. We do not need your pity we only want you to join us in spreading happiness to everyone you meet. If anything you should feel anger towards the lack of funding for this disease and then help by bringing awareness to this monster. 7. We are not privileged. In the ten years that my daughter has been fighting she has been fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of some amazing experiences and gifts. As a family we have been able to go to Disney World and Hollywood. She has been given expensive gifts, the latest toys, and more stuffed animals than one ever needs. We have been beyond blessed in so many ways but I would trade every trip, every gift just for her to have never been through this. In my mind she deserves way more. If you knew even half of what she has been through you would feel the same way. 8. We are still human. This is probably the most important thing for you to know about a parent of a child fighting cancer. I cannot say I am the same person. Over the years I would hear a lot of parents say “I’m still the same person as before. Just because my child has been diagnosed with cancer doesn’t mean I have changed.” Lies. You will forever be changed but it doesn’t mean your friends have to part ways. I cannot stress enough no matter how much we have changed we still want to laugh, we still need a shoulder, and we still want to be there in return. We just want our friends to accept us as we now are. With 1 in 258 children in the US being diagnosed before the age of 20 odds are you will eventually know someone that these rules can apply to.

The biggest animal in the world The biggest animal in the world is the blue whale. It is one of the largest animals that has ever lived. A blue whale can grow as long as 109 feet and weigh more than 418,000 pounds. Females are a bit larger than males. The blue whale is a baleen whale, which means it has plates in its mouth that it uses to filter out its food. It's also a rorqual whale, which means it has grooves along its throat that expand when it gulps great volumes of water. Despite its great size, the blue whale eats tiny, shrimp-like animals called krill.
Can mice distinguish color? Mice are color blind; this means they can see colors, but not very well. The colors they see consist of dull yellows, grays and blues. Humans and most mammals have three photo pigments in their eyes. The third photo pigment is what gives humans the ability to see vibrant colors. Mice only have two photo pigments in their eyes; therefore, without the third photo pigment, they cannot see the variety and vibrancy of colors like other mammals. Mice cannot see very well, but they have a great sense of hearing. They use their whiskers to help them feel their way around, especially at night when their eyes are practically useless.

Titus stepped back to let his brother come into the house, and asked, “What are you doing here?” “I just wanted to talk to you.” Jonathan’s bloodshot eyes were pleading. “What’s wrong?” Titus shut the door, not sure where to go. “Are the boys here?” Jonathan looked around the open interior of the house. “No,” Titus answered, “it’s Saturday. They’re out.” Jonathan walked over and sat on the sofa. Titus followed and sat across from him in his leather recliner. He watched his brother clasp and unclasp his hands. Finally, Jonathan looked up and said, “I’ve got a situation, and I don’t know what to do about it.” Titus sighed. “What’s going on?” “A man who’s been coming to my church molested Emma.” “Oh, God!” Titus leaned back against his chair. He didn’t know what to say. There’s no telling what people will be saying happened to her.” Titus sat quietly, contemplating what his brother was saying. “I’d like to kill the bastard.” Jonathan’s eyes flashed with anger. “I know, but you can’t.” Titus said quietly. “You going to jail is the last thing this family needs right now.” “What do I do, Ty?” Jonathan pleaded. “Let me think about it. I’ll sleep on it, and we’ll talk about it some more tomorrow. Okay?” “Okay.” Jonathan nodded. “I just keep going around in circles in my head. I’ve never felt so helpless to protect my family. I know what I want to do. I want to kill him. I know what makes the most sense in general. I should call the police. But I just keep thinking about how people will spread rumors. What if they get back to Emma? What if she hears people saying stuff about her? I start thinking about that, and then I just want to murder him.” Titus nodded. “I understand, Jon. It’s an impossible situation. We’ll figure it out, though.” Jonathan let his head drop into his hands. After a moment, he looked up and said, “I heard about you and Jamie. I’m sorry, Ty.” “Thanks.” Titus tried not to withdraw from the conversation. “I’ll be okay.” “I know you will. You’re the strongest man I know. You hold this family together.” “I do my best.” Titus rubbed his hands over the three day’s growth of stubble on his own cheeks. His eyes were just as bloodshot as his brother’s. He hadn’t had a good night’s sleep since Jamie ended things with him two weeks ago. “I really am sorry.” Jonathan’s eyes were filling with tears. “It feels like everything is falling apart all at once. I know it must feel even more so for you. I know you know I have a hard time with the gay thing, Titus, but I hope you know that I love you and I want you to be happy.” The familiar feeling of despair flooded Titus when his brother said “the gay thing.” He knew Jonathan was trying his best to be loving and supportive despite his belief system, but it still hurt to have his entire existence boiled down to “the gay thing.” To his brother, he simply said, “Thanks, Man. I love you, too.” Jonathan reached out gripped his brother’s shoulder. “I’m sorry for all the times I let you down, Little Brother.” “It’s okay.” Titus offered a small smile. Jonathan let his hand fall away, and began the nervous clasping and unclasping routine again. “The boys are doing okay?” “Yeah.” Titus nodded. “They’re fine.” “Annie?” “The same.” “And you’re hanging in there?” “I’m fine,” Titus lied. “Okay.” Jonathan nodded, as if trying to convince himself everything really was fine. He stood up, and heaved a sigh. “I better get home. I didn’t tell Abby where I was going.” “Okay.” Titus stood, and faced his brother. “It’ll be okay.” “I hope so.” Jonathan awkwardly embraced his brother. “Thanks for being here for me. I didn’t know who else to go to.” “You can always come to me.” Titus felt his heart swell with affection for his older brother. “We’ll figure it out together, one way or another.” Titus watched his brother drive away from his house, and then shut the front door. He was exhausted. Just as he was starting to get a hold of himself after his breakup and things were settling down with his nephews moving in, he had another family crisis to deal with. Sinking into his recliner, Titus began mentally working over the problem of Emma. He wasn’t sure how her parents should handle the situation. If it were him, he would call the police, but Jonathan’s worries of how rumors would circulate added another dimension to the problem. He wasn’t sure what mode of action he would suggest to his brother the next day, and he certainly had no idea it would be a moot point anyway. Where Dogs Come From (From a lost chapter in the Book of Genesis:) Adam was walking in the garden and cried out to God, "You used to walk with me every day. Now I do not see you anymore. I am lonely here, and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me." And God said, "I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself." And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and he wagged his tail. And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal." Our mission is to improve the welfare of animals in Roane County We issue vouchers each month to Planned Pethood. We are working with Mark Neely at the Rockwood City Animal Shelter in his established pet food pantry. We educate others about the importance of spaying and neutering, vaccinating, caring for, and properly vetting pets. We are a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. We rely on the donations of our community members to fund our vouchers and assist with pet care needs. Each dollar donated goes directly toward the care of pets in our area.
