By O.I. Seenya •A black bear in the West Hills section of Harriman. •A 5 year old, going into the house and saying, “Nanny, Jesse got me mad and he made me kick him.” •A call received by the 911 center because a woman had gotten a call on her cell phone from an unknown number.

The Heroic Firefighters After fighting the fire for over an hour, the chemical company president approached the fire chief and said, “All of our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved! I will give $50,000 to the engine company that brings them out safely!” As soon as the chief heard this, he ordered the firemen to strengthen their attack on the blaze. After two more hours of attacking the fire, the president of the company offered $100,000 to the engine company that could bring out the company’s secret files. From the distance a long siren was heard and another fire truck came into sight. It was a local volunteer fire company composed entirely of men over 65. To everyone’s amazement the little fire engine raced through the Chemical plant gates and drove straight into the middle of the inferno. In the distance the other firemen watched as the old-timers hopped off of their rig and began to fight the fire with an effort that they had before. Twonever Frontseen Doors After an hour of intense fighting the volunteer company had extinguished the fire and saved the secret formulas. Joyous, the chemical company president announced that he would double the reward to $200,000 and walked over to personally thank each of the volunteers. After thanking each of the old men individually, the president asked the group what they intended to do with the reward money. The fire truck driver looked him right in the eye and said, “The first thing we’re going to do is fix the dang brakes on that truck!”

Precious Memories By: Kay Christopher
Kick the can
Growing up in Emory gap brings such good memories to me. No one had air conditioning and it was miserably hot in the houses. So, we played outdoors. One game I remember playing took place at night. All the kids from the neighborhood would come out for an old fashioned game of kick the can. All you needed was kids and an empty tin can. All the kids made a circle around the can and the biggest one got to kick it across the yard. Everyone took off running and hid, all except the one who had to find the others. This person had to run and get the can and sit it back in it’s place, then try to find the others. If he found one, he had to beat them to the can and yell their name. If the one who was hid lost the race back to the can, he had to stand by the can and wait on someone to sneak up and kick it again. If the hider made it to the can first, he’d kick it, thus freeing all the captured ones, then the game started over. If no one could sneak and kick the can, and everyone was found, the first one found had to be the one to hunt all the others. We would stay out for hours playing this. We had no street lights, and only a few of the houses had porch lights, so hiding was easy, and someone finding you was very difficult. We quit and went in the house when our Mama’s yelled for us. We had good, clean fun, and the neighbors didn’t complain, and the police were not called, and DCS was not involved. We had fun outside with our own imaginations, which is something the kids nowadays will never experience.

One day Thomas Edison came home and gave a paper to his mother. He told her, "My teacher gave this paper to me and told me to only give it to my mother." His mother's eyes were tearful as she read the letter out loud to her child: Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn't have enough good teachers for training him. Please teach him yourself. Many, many years after Edison's mother died and he was now one of the greatest inventors of the century, one day he was looking through old family things. Suddenly he saw a folded paper in the corner of a drawer In a desk. He took it and opened it up. On the paper was written: Your son is addled [mentally ill). We won't let him come to school any more. Edison cried for hours and then he wrote in his diary: "Thomas Alva Edison was an addled child that, by a hero mother, became the genius of the century."

Arlington National Cemetery
The cemetery contains 612 acres in Virginia on the Potomac River, directly opposite Washington. This land was part of the estate of John Parke Custis, Martha Washington's son. His son, George Washington Parke Custis, built the mansion which later became the home of Robert E. Lee. In 1864, Arlington became a military cemetery. More than 240,000 service members and their dependents are buried there. Expansion of the cemetery began in 1966, using a 180-acre tract of land directly east of the present site. Among the many famous and distinguished people buried in the cemetery are presidents William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy; a number of supreme court justices, including Chief Justice Earl Warren, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., and Thurgood Marshall; explorers Robert Peary and Matthew Henson; civil rights leader Medgar Evers; band leader Glenn Miller; and mystery writer Dashiell Hammett. There are also 3,800 Civil War “contrabands” (fugitive and liberated slaves) buried there, their headstones engraved only with “Civilian” or “Citizen.” In 1921, an Unknown American Soldier of World War I was buried in the cemetery; the monument at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was opened to the public without ceremony in 1932. Two additional Unknowns, one from World War II and one from the Korean War, were buried May 30, 1958. The Unknown Serviceman of Vietnam was buried on May 28, 1984. In June 1998 his body was disinterred and recent DNA-testing technology was used to identify him as First Lt. Michael Blassie, an Air Force pilot from St. Louis. It is possible that technology will prevent there from ever being another “unknown” buried in the tomb. The inscription carved on the Tomb of the Unknowns reads: HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY AN AMERICAN SOLDIER KNOWN BUT TO GOD
“I, at any rate, am convinced that He (God) does not throw dice.”

Armistice Day Becomes Veterans Day World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The actual fighting between the Allies and Germany, however, had ended seven months earlier with the armistice, which went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Armistice Day, as November 11 became known, officially became a holiday in the United States in 1926, and a national holiday 12 years later. On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans. In 1968, new legislation changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent, however, that November 11 was a date of historic significance to many Americans. Therefore, in 1978 Congress returned the observance to its traditional date.

The hunters and the buffalo
Two hunters had rented an airplane to get to the distant forest zone. After couple of weeks the pilot returned to take them back. After looking at their hunting trophies he said: The plane won’t be able to carry more than one buffalo. You will have to leave one of them. But last year the pilot agreed to take on board two buffalo's - the hunters protested. The pilot thought about it and said: Ok. If it worked the last year, it should work this time too. The plane tried to take off with two passengers and two buffalo's on board, but it was not able to reach the required height. The plane crashed into the nearest hill. After getting out the plane wreck, the hunters looked around. One of them said to another: Where do you think we are? His pal examined the surroundings and answered: I think we are two miles south from the place that we crashed the last time.

The elderly, defenseless lady
A biker stopped by the local Harley Shop to have his bike fixed. They couldn't do it while he waited, so he said he didn't live far and would just walk home. On the way home he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and anvil. He then stopped by the feedstore and picked up a couple of chickens and a goose. However, struggling outside the store, he now had a problem -- how to carry all of his purchases home. While he was scratching his head he was approached by a little old lady who told him she was lost. She asked, "Can you tell me how to get to 1603 Mockingbird Lane?" The biker said, "Well, as a matter of fact, I live at 1616 Mockingbird Lane. I would walk you home but I can't carry this lot." The old lady suggested, "Why don't you put the anvil in the bucket. Carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm and carry the goose in your other hand?" "Why thank you very much," he said and proceeded to walk the old girl home. On the way he says "Let's take my short cut and go down this alley. We'll be there in no time." The little old lady looked him over cautiously then said, "I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won’t take advantage of me because I’d be helpless, and have your way with me?" The biker said, "Holy smokes lady! I am carrying a bucket, an, anvil, two chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly do anything to you?" The lady replied, "Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the anvil on top of the bucket, and I'll hold the chickens."
Note to self: just because it pops into my head doesn’t mean I should say it.

My feathers are made up of dip can lids as a way to promote an anti-tobacco message. The students started gathering lids and piling them up. Over all more than 3,000 lids were used for the project. I really do get a lot of attention, especially in the younger groups. I may look cool but, I want you to realize that smokeless tobacco is addictive and it can cause cancer and other problems. Just remember having a Tobacco Addiction is nothing to Crow about!

Cranky Old Man (Originally by Phyllis McCormack; adapted by Dave Griffith) What do you see nurses?..............What do you see? What are you thinking when you’re looking at me? A cranky old man,...............................not very wise, Uncertain of habit.......................with faraway eyes? Who dribbles his food..............and makes no reply. When you say in a loud voice ’I do wish you’d try!’ Who seems not to notice.....the things that you do. And forever is losing.....................A sock or shoe? Who, resisting or not.........lets you do as you will, With bathing and feeding.......The long day to fill? Is that what you’re thinking?.Is that what you see? Open your eyes nurse, you’re not looking at me. I’ll tell you who I am................As I sit here so still, As I do at your bidding,............as I eat at your will. I’m a small child of Ten....with a father and mother, Brothers and sisters.....who love one another A young boy of Sixteen........with wings on his feet Dreaming that soon now.............a lover he’ll meet. A groom soon at Twenty.........my heart gives a leap. Remembering, the vows......that I promised to keep. At Twenty-Five, now.......I have young of my own. Who need me to guide....And a secure happy home. A man of Thirty............My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other........With ties that should last. At Forty, my young sons have grown and are gone, But my woman is beside me...to see I don’t mourn. At Fifty, once more, Babies play ’round my knee, Again, we know children.....My loved one and me. Dark days are upon me.........My wife is now dead. I look at the future..................I shudder with dread. My young are all rearing..........young of their own. I think of the years, And the love that I’ve known. I’m now an old man.................and nature is cruel. It’s jest to make old age..................look like a fool. The body, it crumbles.......grace and vigour, depart. There is now a stone.......where I once had a heart. But inside this ol’ carcass a young man still dwells, And now and again...........my battered heart swells I remember the joys.................I remember the pain. And I’m loving and living................life over again. I think of the years, all too few...........gone too fast. And accept the stark fact.........that nothing can last. So open your eyes, people..................open and see. Not a cranky old man. Look closer . . . . see .. .. . .. …. . ME!!
Take Time Take time to think; it is the source of power. Take time to read; it is the foundation of wisdom. Take time to play; it is the secret of staying young. In years, roughly how long did Paul spend in Ephesus? Which gospel records the fewest of the miracles performed by Jesus? What does Psalm 16 say there is in “the Lord’s right hand”? Who walked barefoot and naked for three years at the Lord’s command? Who promised to give their daughters to Shechemites if they agreed to be circumcised, only to kill them instead three days later while they were still sore? A meeting with Jesus
One day God called Jesus and his helpers into a meeting. God said that he wanted them to create a database on heaven’s super computer. He said He wanted them to list everyone who had ever been born and all the good and bad things that each had done since the beginning of time. They all said they could do that and so they sat at their keyboards for hours, then days and weeks. Finally they were almost done when there was a power failure in heaven and the computers all went off. Only seconds later the lights came back on and all the computers started to re-boot. There was much crying and gnashing of teeth and pounding of keyboards as this happened. Down at the end of the table sat Jesus with a big smile on His face. Why was Jesus smiling amongst all this dismay? Jesus Saves!

“Why don’t you go to church? the Lutheran pastor asked the man with whom he had struck up a conversation in the grocery line. “All I have are my work clothes, he said, looking down at his dusty jeans, muddy boots and sweat-stained tee shirt. “I can’t come to a Lutheran Church like this. The pastor then collected some nice clothes from the congregation and gave the man quite an upgrade in his wardrobe. Several weeks later the pastor bumped into him again. This time the man wore a pair of khaki slacks, penny loafers and a button-down shirt. “Why didn’t I see you at church? the pastor asked. “Well, the man began, “Last Sunday I showered, shaved and put on the clothes you gave me. I looked so dang good I decided to go to the Episcopal Church instead.

Jolene was only eight years old and lived way out in the country with her parents who rarely entertained any visitors. One day Jolene's mother said that her father was bringing two guests home for Thanksgiving supper. After they had enjoyed the turkey, Jolene went to the kitchen to help her mother. She proudly brought out the first piece of pumpkin pie and gave it to her father, who then passed the plate to a guest. When Jolene came out with the second piece and gave it to her father, he again gave it to a guest. This was too much for the little girl. "It's no use, Daddy," she cried. "The pieces are all the same size."

Every year more than 3.5 million New Yorkers line the route of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade while 50 million television viewers tune in to watch the holiday pageant of giant character balloons, floats, celebrities and marching bands. Although it is now as much of an American tradition as turkey and stuffing, the first Macy’s parade on Thanksgiving morning of 1924 was a much more humble affair that bore the name of an altogether different holiday. As the United States prospered during the Roaring Twenties, so did New York City’s iconic department store—Macy’s. After going public in 1922, R. H. Macy & Co. started to acquire competitors and open regional locations. Macy’s flagship store in Manhattan’s Herald Square did such a brisk business that it expanded in 1924 to cover an entire city block stretching from Broadway to Seventh Avenue along 34th Street. To showcase the opening of the “World’s Largest Store” and its 1 million square feet of retail space at the start of the busy holiday shopping season, Macy’s decided to throw New York a parade on Thanksgiving morning. In spite of its timing, the parade was not actually about Thanksgiving at all but the next major holiday on the calendar—Christmas. Macy’s hoped its “Christmas Parade” would wet the appetites of consumers for a holiday shopping feast. The idea of a store-sponsored Thanksgiving parade did not originate with Macy’s, however, but with Philadelphia’s Gimbel Brothers Department Store, which first staged a Thanksgiving procession in 1920 with 50 people, 15 cars and a fireman dressed as Santa Claus who ushered in the Christmas shopping season. Like Macy’s, J.L. Hudson’s Department Store in Detroit also planned a similar event in 1924. In New York, however, the only Thanksgiving parade that had previously passed through the city’s streets was its peculiar—and to many, annoying—tradition of children painting their faces and donning tattered clothes to masquerade as “ragamuffins” who asked “Anything for Thanksgiving?” as they begged door-to-door for pennies, apples and pieces of candy. At 9 a.m. on the sunlit morning of November 27, 1924, Macy’s gave the children of New York a particularly special Thanksgiving treat as a police escort led the start of the parade from the intersection of 145th Street and Convent Avenue. The early-morning start time of “Macy’s Christmas Parade” overlapped with many church services, but it gave spectators plenty of time to make it to the afternoon’s big football game between Syracuse and Columbia universities at the Polo Grounds. Macy’s had promised parade-goers “a marathon of mirth” in its full-page newspaper advertisements. While the parade route may not have extended over 26 miles, its six-mile length certainly made for a long hike for those marching from Harlem to Herald Square. The spectators who stood four and five people deep, however, could watch it all in just a matter of minutes since the modest street pageant stretched the length of only two city blocks. To match the nursery-rhyme theme in Macy’s Christmas window display in 1924, floats featured Mother Goose favorites such as the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, Little Miss Muffet and Little Red Riding Hood. Macy’s employees dressed as clowns, cowboys and sword-wielding knights. A menagerie of animals on loan from the Central Park Zoo—including bears, elephants, camels and monkeys—offered a circus-like atmosphere as four bands provided the soundtrack to the festive march. Bringing up the rear of the parade was a float bearing the guest of honor—Santa Claus—sitting in his reindeer-driven sleigh on top of a mountain of ice. By noontime, the parade finally arrived at its end in front of Macy’s Herald Square store where 10,000 people cheered Santa as he descended from his sleigh. After being crowned “King of the Kiddies,” Kris Kringle scaled a ladder and sat on a gold throne mounted on top of the marquee above the store’s new 34th Street entrance near Seventh Avenue. With a bellow from his trumpet, Santa sounded the signal to unveil “The Fair Frolics of Wondertown,” the Christmastime window display designed by artist and puppeteer Tony Sarg. As soon as the police lowered their crowd-control lines, children rushed to the 75-foot-long window to see the miniature Mother Goose marionette characters on moving belts frolicking in their own parade in front of a castle-like façade. Although the parade garnered only two sentences the following day in the New York Herald—the same amount of ink given to the charity dinner and screening of the “The Ten Commandments” for the prisoners at the Sing Sing correctional facility—it proved such a smash that Macy’s announced in a newspaper advertisement the following morning that it would stage the parade again the following Thanksgiving. “We did not dare dream its success would be so great,” stated the advertisement. Macy’s Christmas Parade quickly became a New York holiday tradition to the joy of nearly all except the zoo animals, who did not revel in the six-mile journey, and the marchers treading carefully in their wake. The roars and growls from the tired animals frightened young spectators, so they were replaced by less-surly and more-obedient character balloons, which quickly became the parade’s signature attractions after the debut of a helium-filled Felix the Cat, designed by Sarg, in 1927. While the route has been scaled back to a length of two-and-a-half miles, the size of the parade itself has blossomed with dozens of balloons, marching bands, celebrities and cheerleaders. Although it is now called the “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” Santa Claus remains the show-stopper, and his arrival in Herald Square still heralds in the Christmas season in New York.

The cookie bag
A woman was waiting for her flight at an airport. She bought a bag of cookies, found a place to drop and took out her book. She started to read and suddenly noticed that a man, sitting beside her, grabbed a cookie from her bag. She just tried to ignore this. So she munched cookies and at the same time watched how shameless cookie thief was diminishing her stocks. She thought to herself: “If I wasn‘t such a nice person, I would blacken his eye“. When only one cookie was left, she looked with interest and wondered what he would do. He smiled, took the last cookie and broke it in half. She thought: „This guy is so rude, he didn‘t even show any gratitude!” After her flight was called, the woman gathered her baggage and headed to gate. She took her seat in the plane, and started to look for her book, which was almost complete. As she reached her baggage, she gasped with surprise, as there was an unopened bag of cookies. A dreadful thought crossed her mind: “If my cookie bag is here, the other one was his and he just tried to share. She realized that she was the rude one, but it was too late to apologize. In his eyes, she was the one that didn’t show gratitude.

I wanted to change the world When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family. Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world. Author: unknown monk around 1100 AD

Uses for Microfiber Cloths To help make cleaning easier, manufacturers have introduced wonderful new cleaning products and equipment. I love microfiber cloths because they are so handy and do a great cleaning job. Try these hints for using them around the house: Cleaning your Computer • Remove individual keys to clean and wipe the underside with a microfiber cloth. Some keys have springs and it might be tough to get them back in place. • Lay an extra place mat over the keyboard (when not using) to prevent dust, dirt and pet hair from getting on or in it. • Keep food or drinks away from your computer. Auto Keep several microfiber cloths underneath the front seat of your vehicle. Use them to dust off the dashboard, radio and steering wheel. Bathroom, Kitchen Store a couple of microfiber cloths in these locations because they will clean and shine the chrome, spiff up mirrors and are great for wiping off the sink. When the cloths become dirty, toss them into the washing machine. Pets Freshen up your dog by lightly dampening a microfiber cloth with water and wiping over its fur. If your cat or dog needs to get the gunk out of its eyes, a microfiber cloth will do the job nicely. And if your pet gets a dirty beard after eating, the cloth will remove that food crud. Plants To take dust off live or artificial leaves, lightly dampen a microfiber cloth and wipe over the leaves. This will also add a bit of moisture to the real plants too. HIGH TECH Computer Pet hair, dust, ashes from smoking can migrate into your computer and clog the open holes. Use the hose attachment of your vacuum to remove pet hair and dust from the back of your computer. Clean the monitor case with a slightly damp microfiber cloth. Be sure to also dust the power cords, floor and area around the computer, printer and fax machine too. Cell Phone Wipe the handset surface with a dampened microfiber cloth to eliminate fingerprints and dust. But if it’s still sticky, mix one cup of water with one drop of mild detergent to wipe off and then rinse area (not the screen) with a clean dampened cloth. Don’t spray anything into the handset or keys. Digital Camera To remove dust, grime and fingerprints, wipe the outside with a microfiber cloth and then carefully swipe over the lens. For a thorough cleaning, take it to a pro or use commercial wipes. Music Players Wipe the outside with a slightly damp microfiber cloth to clean, but don’t let moisture seep into openings. Do not use alcohol or solvents on this equipment. Plasma Screens First, unplug the power cord. Lift off fingerprints or dust by wiping screen with a microfiber cloth. Use it to clean the remote control too. NEVER apply any solvent on the screen. Lightly vacuum the vents on the rear panel occasionally.

Is Your Bank Committing a Major Crime? In April 10, 2006, Mexican authorities searched through a DC-9 jet at the airport in Bob Tonachio Ciudad del Carmen. They found more than five tons of cocaine… valued at more than $100 million. If you're like many Americans, you're not surprised by a story like this. Not a year goes by without a few big media stories about Mexican drug cartels. However, you probably will be very surprised to learn who aided and abetted the drug operation: it was US banking titan Wachovia. After an investigation that took years, Wells Fargo, which now owns Wachovia, paid a $160 million fine to settle the case. "Wachovia's blatant disregard for our banking laws gave international cocaine cartels a virtual carte blanche to finance their operations," said federal prosecutor Jeffrey Sloman. You might also be shocked to hear that Wachovia's fine wasn't an isolated case. Citibank was caught laundering money for a Mexican drug honcho in 2001. American Express Bank admitted to laundering $55 million in drug money in 2007. You've probably never heard these stories before. The big banks pay a lot of money to keep it that way. Every year, America's biggest banks spend hundreds of millions of dollars to create a simple, wholesome image: They're here to help out families and small businesses. They're the conservative stewards of our capital, and they always play by the rules. But the big banks employ some of the world's best marketers and they buy politicians with large campaign contributions. They're also huge advertisers, which permits them to wield enormous influence with the mainstream media But if you look past the brochures that feature all-American families, golden retrievers, and small business owners, you'll get a much different idea of what banks are all about. You'll see that our nation's biggest banks are among the most flagrant lawbreakers in the world. They're routinely fined hundreds of millions - even billions - of dollars for screwing customers and rigging financial markets. For example… In 2011, Bank of America paid a $335 million fine for discriminating against black and Hispanic borrowers. In 2012 the FBI accused Bank of America of helping a Mexican drug cartel hide money. In 2013, J.P. Morgan paid $410 million for manipulating the electricity market. Later that year, it paid $13 billion to settle claims that it knowingly sold toxic loans. And the In 2014, Bank of America paid a $6.3 billion fine for selling faulty mortgages. And in 2015, five big banks paid $5.8 billion for rigging the currency markets. This is just a short list of banks breaking the law and getting fined. Boston Consulting Group reports that banks have paid more than $178 billion in legal claims since the financial crisis. These are the nation's largest banks. Millions of Americans rely on them. We trust them to be conservative with our cash and keep it safe. We trust that our credit cards will work when we buy groceries. Above all, we trust them to keep the financial system working… a trust they broke in 2008 when the biggest banks failed and needed government bailouts. These banks have no problem breaking the law if it benefits them. They're caught screwing over customers all the time. And they're caught helping criminals all the time. Paying the fines is just a small cost of doing business. And it's well worth it… the banks make far more money from their illegal activities than they pay in fines. With the nation's largest banks operating this way, do you trust our financial system to hold up during the next crisis? Facts About Thanksgiving
NOVEMBER 2015
The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. The Thanksgiving Feast that the Pilgrims had with the Natives in 1621 lasted three days. It is not a sure thing that turkey was part of the Thanksgiving Feast, but venison was definitely part of the meal. All 13 colonies celebrated Thanksgiving together for the first time in 1777. In 1941, Thanksgiving was declared by Congress to be a legal holiday, held on the fourth Thursday in November. The popular Christmas song “Jingle Bells” was actually written for Thanksgiving. The song was composed in 1857 by James Pierpont, and was originally called “One Horse Open Sleigh”.

Almonds Almonds, along with other types of nuts, are rich in vitamin E. Vitamin E can greatly slow down degeneration of the eyes and protect them from cataracts. A handful of almonds each day will provide you about half the recommended daily dose of vitamin E. Throw a few berries into the mix and you’ll be well on your way!

Bugs Bunny was onto something after all. Carrots, along with other orange fruits like pumpkin, sweet potato and mango are known to provide great benefits for your eye health through the substance they contain called lutein, which is also found in egg yolks and greens. Carrots also contain beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A.
Berries Blueberries in particular are one of the best fruits – and foods, for that matter – for your eyes. This is due to the large quantities of vitamin A, C, E and zinc. Vitamin A is an antioxidant that prevents inflammation, vitamin C works to relieve eye pressure (which can lead to glaucoma in excess) and vitamin E prevents cataracts from forming. Zinc also protects against night blindness as well as macular degeneration. As a bit of a bonus to this entry, citrus fruit are also great for your eyes. This is due to their high concentration of vitamin C.
Fatty Fish Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and anchovies are great for your eyes due to the presence of fatty acid DHA. This substance is inherently found in our retinas and prevents macular degeneration. So how fishy should you get? Two or four servings of the fish I’ve listed above should be enough to give your eyesight a hand. If you don’t fish, you’ve got a couple choices; for one, you can take fish oil supplements or flaxseed oil.
Leafy Greens Leafy greens like spinach, kale and turnip greens contain a fantastic amount of lutein and zeaxanthin. These have been proven to reduce the risk of eye diseases like macular degeneration and cataracts. You can further reap the benefits of these greens by cooking them in olive or coconut oil.
Knowledge and wisdom There is a difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit not a vegetable. Wisdom is knowing not to include it in a fruit salad. .................................................................................................

Pretty Little Girls I went to a dinner party at a friend’s home and met her five-year-old daughter for the first time. Little Maya was all curly brown hair, doe-like dark eyes, and adorable in her shiny pink nightgown. I wanted to squeal, “Maya, you’re so cute! Look at you! Turn around and model that pretty ruffled gown!” But I didn’t. I squelched myself. I bit my tongue, restraining myself from my first impulse, which is to tell them how darn cute they are. What’s wrong with that? It’s our culture’s standard talking-to-little-girls icebreaker, isn’t it? And why not give them a sincere compliment to boost their self-esteem? ABC news reported that nearly half of all three- to six-year-old girls worry about being fat. Also fifteen to eighteen percent of girls under twelve now wear mascara, eyeliner and lipstick regularly; eating disorders are up and self-esteem is down; and twenty-five percent of young American women would rather win America’s next top model than the Nobel Peace Prize. Even bright, successful college women say they’d rather be hot than smart. A Miami mom just died from cosmetic surgery, leaving behind two teenagers. Teaching girls that their appearance is the first thing you notice tells them that looks are more important than anything. It sets them up for dieting at age 5 and foundation at age 11 and boob jobs at 17 and Botox at 23. As our cultural imperative for girls to be hot 24/7 has become the new normal, American women have become increasingly unhappy. What’s missing? A life of meaning, a life of ideas and reading books and being valued for our thoughts and accomplishments. That’s why I force myself to talk to them as follows. “Maya,” I said, crouching down at her level, looking into her eyes, “very nice to meet you.” “Nice to meet you too,” she said, in that trained, polite, talking-to-adults good girl voice. “What are you reading?” I asked, I love books. I let that show. Her eyes got bigger, and the practiced, polite facial expression gave way to genuine excitement over this topic. She paused, though, a little shy of me, a stranger. “I LOVE books,” I said. “Do you?” Most kids do. “YES,” she said. “And I can read them all by myself now!” “Wow, amazing!” I said. And it is, for a five year old. “What’s your favorite book?” I asked. Purplicious was Maya’s pick and a new one to me, as Maya snuggled next to me on the sofa and proudly read aloud every word, about our heroine who loves pink but is tormented by a group of girls at school who only wear black. Alas, it was about girls and what they wore, and how their wardrobe choices defined their identities. But after Maya closed the final page, I steered the conversation to the deeper issues in the book: mean girls and peer pressure and not going along with the group. I told her my favorite color in the world is green, because I love nature, and she was down with that. Not once did we discuss clothes or hair or bodies or who was pretty. It’s surprising how hard it is to stay away from those topics. I told her that I’d just written a book, and that I hoped she’d write one too one day. She was fairly psyched about that idea. We were both sad when Maya had to go to bed, but I told her next time to choose another book and we’d read it and talk about it. So, one tiny bit of opposition to a culture that sends all the wrong messages to our girls. One tiny nudge towards valuing female brains. One brief moment of intentional role modeling. Will my few minutes with Maya change our multi-billion dollar beauty industry, reality shows that demean women, our celebrity-manic culture? No. But I did change Maya’s perspective for at least that evening. Try this the next time you meet a little girl. She may be surprised and unsure at first, because few ask her about her mind, but be patient and stick with it. Ask her what she’s reading. What does she like and dislike, and why? There are no wrong answers. You’re just generating an intelligent conversation that respects her brain. For older girls, ask her about current events issues: pollution, wars, school budgets slashed. What bothers her out there in the world? How would she fix it if she had a magic wand? You may get some intriguing answers. Tell her about your ideas and accomplishments and your favorite books. Model for her what a thinking woman says and does.

by: Donna Kay Reynolds Planning a Thanksgiving memory To my cabin on a hillside with beautiful scenery My family gathers coming through a patch of snow As we walk by the stream and feel it bitter cold On the porch of my cabin I walk As my grandchildren gather around me to talk My children are in the kitchen ready to prepare food As in the top of a tree an owl asks who It’s so peaceful, quiet, and serene It seems it is a wonderful dream Happiness and laughter echo on the hillside As inside a few decorations are hanging high On the tables the cloths are being spread From the oven comes out a loaf of honey bread My children and I make many a festive dish As at the window we hear the wind go swish My family and I talk for a long time Everything this Thanksgiving has turned out fine As the gentle night begins to fall With a toast we wish Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Potter’s wheel by: Clara Miles Sometimes in this life. In this world of strife. It seems to be such a hard fight. Whenever, we can’t see anything in sight. Things will be moving along smoothly and then everything will slow way down and even come to a stop. You wonder what is going on, what is the delay? It just means God is working with the clay. That He has us on the potter’s wheel. That He is the potter and we are the clay. And that He is working with us each day. Before He sends us on our way.
Your Eternity by: Elsie Wyrick
- According to how you’ve lived your life down here on earth and to whom you have sewed God or satan will determine where you will spend eternity! - Are you afraid of the dark? Look to the Light! - Have you been bitten by the serpent of sin? Jesus is the only one with the antidote. - There is life eternal in Heaven if you look to Jesus - If your life here on earth was over, where would be your eternal home? - The devil will soothe your feelings and deceive you until you commit that final sin and he will make you feel good about your wrongs. Yes, we are free to make our own choices, but we will have to answer at judgment for them all.

Yes I Believe by: Judy M. Reid
I believe in children’s laughter and song And that everyone should try to get along I believe that Jesus died to save our souls And that all he stories are true that the bible holds I believe we should be kind to our fellow man Until the day we die and meet in Heaven I believe that God is watching from above And each day He sends down to us His love So we should all do the best we can And someday go to live in God’s Holy Land So just be strong and soon your troubles will all be gone For when you die God will come to take you home Yes I believe in children’s laughter and song And that everyone should to get along Yes I Believe
WHAT IS HELL?
Psalms 114:6-8 Genesis 4:13-14 by: Katie Bailey Randolph Long ago I wrote in my Bible, "What could be worse than hell?" For most it would be the unending pain and the fire you could not quell. It may be the hatred one feels for another that's in the same place they're in; Or blaming each other though both has chosen to serve the pleasures of sin! It may be the smoke or the eternal darkness, or the thirst that has no end; Or the screaming and cursing the dear name of Jesus for the hell they find themselves in. But for me hell would be eternal separation from the dear face of Almighty God. The one who has blessed my life so richly and paid for my sins with His blood. As David expressed in the scriptures, "Hide not Thy face from me, lest I be like them down in the pit, no more Thy face to see". Or like unto Cain who said unto God, "my punishment is too great to bear." Not because of the sin he refused to repent of, but he was driven from God's daily care. I'm glad I chose my Living Savior when He knocked at my heart's door. For I shall behold His dear face forever, as forever I'll be with the Lord.

Not with my daughter you don’t!
19 The Roane Reader
When I was in high school I used to be terrified of my girlfriend's father, who I believe suspected me of wanting to place my hands on his daughter's chest. He would open the door and immediately affect my good naturedly murderous expression, holding out a handshake that, when gripped, felt like it could squeeze carbon into diamonds. Now, years later, it is my turn to be the dad. Remembering how unfairly persecuted I felt when I would pick up my dates, I do my best to make my daughter's suitors feel even worse. My motto: wilt them in the living room and they'll stay wilted all night. "So," I'll call out jovially. "I see you have your nose pierced. Is that because you're stupid, or did you merely want to APPEAR stupid?" As a dad, I have some basic rules, which I have carved into two stone tablets that I have on display in my living room. Rule One: If you pull into my driveway and honk you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure as heck not picking anything up. Rule Two: You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter's body, I will remove them. Rule Three: I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don't take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are complete idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose this compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, In order to assure that your clothes do not, in fact, come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric staple gun and fasten your trousers securely in place around your waist. Rule Four: I'm sure you've been told that in today's world, sex without utilizing a "barrier method" of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate: when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I WILL kill you. Rule Five: In order for us to get to know each other, we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on this subject is "early." Rule Six: I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make YOU cry. Rule Seven: As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process which can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don't you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car? Rule Eight: The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there are no parents, policemen, or nuns within eyesight. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to induce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a goose down parka zipped up to her Adam's apple. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual theme are to be avoided; movies which feature chainsaws are okay. Hockey games are okay. My daughter claims it embarrasses her to come downstairs and find me attempting to get her date to recite these eight simple rules from memory. I'd be embarrassed too there are only eight of them, for crying out loud! And, for the record, I did NOT suggest to one of these cretins that I'd have these rules tattooed on his arm if he couldn't remember them. (I checked into it and the cost is prohibitive.) I merely told him that I thought writing the rules on his arm with a ball point might be inadequate ink washes off and that my wood burning set was probably a better alternative. One time, when my wife caught me having one of my daughter's would be suitors practice pulling into the driveway, get out of the car, and go up to knock on the front door (he had violated rule number one, so I figured he needed to run through the drill a few dozen times) she asked me why I was being so hard on the boy. "Don't you remember being that age?" she challenged. Of course I remember. Why do you think I came up with the eight simple rules? When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300 C......The Russians used a pencil.

A Fourth Letter to America by: Manuel Ybarra, Jr.
Recent remarks by several presidential candidates from both major political party’s shows clearly that America no longer understands what our Constitution and the Bill of Rights stand for. Hearing them say, “it’s the law,” or “it’s the law of the land,” makes some of us almost sick to our stomach. The fact is that the Judicial Branch of our government has shredded those two great documents and substituted some so called rights that are definitely not anywhere to be found in those precious documents. Now when politicians say, “We are suppose to defend the Constitution,” they don’t mean the original documents, they mean whatever the Federal Justices have ruled on regardless of how ungodly those decisions were. And if you have the internet, and want to see how ungodly things are, look up “Baby Malachi” on any of the search engines. Every American owes it to humanity to do that! And this includes looking at the dismembered body of Baby Malachi. Jul 26 NBCSN 3:30 PM ET IMS/SIRIUSXM So where are the “checks and balances” America? Thanksgiving’s Black Friday Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November). Since the early 2000s, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US, and most major retailers open very early (and more recently during overnight hours) and offer promotional sales. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but California and some other states observe "The Day After Thanksgiving" as a holiday for state government employees, sometimes in lieu of another federal holiday such as Columbus Day. Many non-retail employees and schools have both Thanksgiving and the following Friday off, which, along with the following regular weekend, makes it a four-day weekend, thereby increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005, although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate, have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time. Similar stories resurface year upon year at this time, portraying hysteria and shortage of stock, creating a state of positive feedback. In 2014, $50.9 billion was spent during the 4-day Black Friday weekend, down 11% from last year. While approximately 133 million U.S. consumers shopped during the same period, down 5.2% from last year's 141 million. The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1961 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation was made: that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss ("in the red") from January through November, and "Black Friday" indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or "in the black". For many years, it was common for retailers to open at 6:00 a.m., but in the late 2000s many had crept to 5:00 or even 4:00. This was taken to a new extreme in 2011, when several retailers (including Target, Kohl's, Macy's, Best Buy, and Bealls) opened at midnight for the first time. In 2012, Walmart and several other retailers announced that they would open most of their stores at 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day (except in states where opening on Thanksgiving is prohibited due to blue laws, such as Massachusetts where they still opened around midnight), prompting calls for a walkout among some workers. In 2014 stores such as JCPenney, Best Buy, and Radio Shack opened at 5 PM on Thanksgiving Day while stores such as Target, Walmart, Belk, and Sears opened at 6 PM on Thanksgiving Day. There have been reports of violence occurring between shoppers on Black Friday. It is common for prospective shoppers to camp out over the Thanksgiving holiday in an effort to secure a place in front of the line and thus a better chance at getting desired items; because this poses a significant safety risk (such as the use of propane and generators in the most elaborate cases, and in general, the blocking of emergency access and fire lanes) at least one city has banned this practice. The two pebbles Many years ago in a small Italian town, a merchant had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to the moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the merchant's beautiful daughter, so he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the merchant's debt if he could marry the daughter. Both the merchant and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. The moneylender told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty bag. The girl would then have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become the moneylender's wife and her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white pebble, she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven. But, if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. They were standing on a pebble-strewn path in the merchant's garden. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick her pebble from the bag. The girl put her hand into the bag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. "Oh, how clumsy of me, but never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked." Sometimes it is necessary to think out of the box or, in this case, out of the bag.

Ten most Dangerous jobs in America Job site CareerCast has put together a list of the most dangerous professions around, using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Labor and U.S. Census and weighing that against two factors: how much danger the employee is in directly and the hazards faced by people working alongside those employees.
Firefighter - In 2013, 107 firefighters lost their lives on the job, according to the U.S. Fire Administration, which tracks and collects information on the causes of on-duty firefighter fatalities. (In 2015, there have been 59 reported fatalities so far.)
Half of those deaths occurred on-scene, but the fire itself wasn't the biggest cause The hard data, it's worth noting, was taken from a 2013 study, the most recent figures of the fatality. Instead, stress and overexertion were to blame for 35.5 percent of the available—but it's an eye-opening look at the jobs you might want to avoid if you're deaths. Median salary: $45,250 risk-averse. Animal-care worker - Dogs and cats can be cute, but animals are unpredictable, and that can make them dangerous. Injuries, such as bites, are common—and they can be severe. Larger animals, such as horses, are responsible for dozens of deaths per year, per the U.S. Census.
Lumberjack/logger - It's not just CareerCast that labels logging as a dangerous way to make a living. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration calls it "the most dangerous occupation in the United States." That's due in part to the tools and equipment (like chain saws and logging machines) that are hazardous, and in According to CareerCast, this field actually accounts for 11 percent of on-the-job part to the momentum of trees as they fall and roll. Wild turkeys, while technically the same species as domesticated turkeys, have a very different taste from farm-raised turkeys. Almost all of the meat is "dark" (even the breasts) with a more intense turkey flavor. Older heritage breeds also differ in flavor.

The traditional cornucopia was a curved goat's horn filled to brim with fruits and grains. According to Greek legend, Amalthea (a goat) broke one of her horns and offered it to Greek God Zeus as a sign of reverence. As a sign of gratitude, Zeus later set the goat's image in the sky also known as constellation Capricorn. Cornucopia is the most common symbol of a harvest festival. A Horn shaped container, it is filled with abundance of the Earth's harvest. It is also known as the 'horn of plenty’. It was not until 1941, that congress declared Thanksgiving as a national holiday. It was declared to be the 4th Thursday in November. The first known thanksgiving feast or festival in North America was celebrated by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and the people he called "Tejas" (members of the Hasinai group of Caddo-speaking Native Americans). Turducken, a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken, is becoming more popular in Thanksgiving (originated in Louisiana). A turducken is a de-boned turkey stuffed with a de-boned duck, which itself is stuffed with a small de-boned chicken. The cavity of the chicken and the rest of the gaps are filled with, at the very least, a highly seasoned breadcrumb mixture (although some versions have a different stuffing for each bird). There are regional differences as to the "stuffing" (or "dressing") traditionally served with the turkey. Southerners generally make theirs from cornbread, while in other parts of the country white bread is the base. One or several of the following may be added: oysters, apples, chestnuts, raisins, celery and/or other vegetables, sausage or the turkey's giblets.

When I’m an old lady When I'm an old lady, I'll live with each kid, And bring so much happiness just as they did. I want to pay back all the joy they've provided. Returning each deed! Oh, they'll be so excited! When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.
When they cook dinner and call me to eat, I'll not eat my green beans or salad or meat, I'll gag on my okra, spill milk on the table, And when they get angry I'll run if I'm able! When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.
I'll write on the walls with reds, whites and blues, And I'll bounce on the furniture wearing my shoes. I'll drink from the carton and then leave it out. I'll stuff all the toilets and oh, how they'll shout! When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.
I'll sit close to the TV, through channels I'll click, I'll cross both eyes just to see if they stick. I'll take off my socks and throw one away, And play in the mud 'til the end of the day! When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.
When they're on the phone and just out of reach, I'll get into things like sugar and bleach. They'll snap their fingers and then shake their head, When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.
And later in bed, I'll lay back and sigh, I'll thank God in prayer and then close my eyes. My kids will look down with a smile slowly creeping, and say with a groan, "She's so sweet when she's sleeping!"
The Revival After the revivals had concluded, the three pastors were discussing the results with one another. The Methodist minister said, “The revival worked out great for us! We gained four new members.” The Baptist preacher said, “We did better than that! We gained six new members.” The Presbyterian pastor said, “Well, we did even better than that! We got rid of our ten biggest troublemakers!”

The controversy over planned parenthood and women’s rights is so ridiculous. There is not any kind of medical need that women could not go to a doctor and get help with. The idea that they are taking babies and cutting them up is so horrible, just to write it makes me want to cry. But my question is, where is the mother that would subject her baby to such pain? Have we raised a bunch of girls who not only have no respect for themselves, but have no respect or love for that innocent baby. You have a right to say no to sex. Girls and boys. When you have been raped your rights have been violated. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Although, our country has said by law you can now take away a babies right to live, that does not mean it is the right thing to do. You may not want to use 9 months of your life carrying a child you don’t want but it is better than living a lifetime with the guilt of murder and now of torture. Keeping alive a baby long enough to decide which part is worth saving. The selfishness of people who would do such things reminds me of king Solomon and the woman that decided she would rather see a child cut in half than to see the child live with the true mother. But then the love of the mother who would rather her child live in the arms of another woman than to see her child murdered. How as a nation, our country has turned away from God’s teaching. Sincerely, Darlene Edwards

Black November; "Come about August, now listen to me, Each day you'll be thick, where once you were thin, And you'll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin.

Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat, I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat, And decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked, I'd have to lay low and remain overlooked; I began a new diet of nuts and granola, High-roughage salads, juice and diet cola, And as they ate pastries, chocolates and crepes, I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes, I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half, And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed;

Traveling With Your Pet In The Car
Keep your pet safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. It should be big enough for your pet to be able to stand up, lie down and turn around comfortably. It is a good idea to start your pet out with small trips around town to get them used to the carrier before going on a longer road trip. By lengthening the trip each time you have your pet in the car, they should hopefully be a lot more comfortable and less stressed by the time you take them on a long trip with you. You should feed your pet a small meal about 3 to 4 hours before you leave for your trip. Don't feed your pet in a moving vehicle, even if it is a long drive. Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car. On a hot day the inside of a car can heat up very quickly, even with the windows cracked. This can cause your pet to develop heat stroke. Pack a traveling kit for your pet. You should have proof of vaccinations (especially proof of rabies vaccination), food and water bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, any medications that your pet is on and a favorite toy or pillow to help make your pet more comfortable. It is best to use bottled water or tap water stored in plastic jugs for your pet. Using water from rest stops and different places that your pet isn't used to can cause your dog to have an upset stomach. Make sure your pet has a collar with an ID tag on it and also any county or city tags that are required for where you live. The ID tag should have your home address on it and also a cell phone number and a phone number of where you will be staying.

How to Find a Lost Pet
* Take action immediately. The sooner you start your search, the better your chances of finding the animal. * Walk around the area calling your pet's name, or have a family member do this. At the same time, you and/or trusted acquaintances should be taking the following steps. Teamwork is crucial. * Call every animal shelter, animal control department, humane society and veterinarian in your area. Also call breed rescues if your pet is a particular breed. * Provide a very detailed description of the animal, including the name of the pet, sex, age, breed type, weight, neuter status, color and distinctive markings. Describe the type of collar and identification tag the pet should be wearing. If the pet is microchipped or has a tattoo, be sure to provide that information. Some vets and other facilities will post a notice in their facility about the lost pet. * Make a flyer. Design a simple format with easy-to-read type and a photo (color, if possible) of the pet. Do not include too much detail; you want the type large enough for people to read, and you want readers to remember the key details. However, if the pet needs certain medications or other special care, include a note that the pet has a special health condition and must be found immediately. Also, be sure to include a phone number at which callers can always reach you or a trusted contact. Two contact numbers are even better. If possible, include a strip of tear-off tabs noting Lost Pet and the numbers. Many people have found it helpful to add the word REWARD in large type. * Use a scanner to scan the photo and create the flyer's. If you do not have a scanner, print out the poster leaving room for the photo, then take the poster and photo to a copy shop or office supply store to photocopy. * Make as many copies as you can, and ask trustworthy people to help you post the flyers as many places as you can within a 10- to 20-mile radius. Knock on doors in neighborhoods where you think your pet might be. Do the best you can. And do not delay. Of those lost pets who are found, most are found within a 2-mile radius of the place they were lost, so owners should be sure to blanket this target area with attention-getting posters. * Post flyers where pet owners go -- pet stores, vets, groomers, grocery stores (including pet food aisles), libraries...and post them at schools too. Children and car-pooling parents often have opportunities to see dogs running loose. * Also give flyers to mail carriers, delivery drivers, meter readers and local police officers. These people may spot your pet. * Another effective technique is to mail out postcards, especially to the areas you cannot cover in person with your posters. * Call local radio stations -- some will help by making an announcement about the lost pet. * Place lost pet ads in your local and daily newspapers. People who find pets sometimes look at the lost and found ads. Also, check the classifieds for Found Pet ads from individuals and animal control departments. * Check your local shelters and animal control departments at least every other day after you initially alert them. Due to their changes in staff shifts and hectic environments, it is likely that your initial report may get lost in the shuffle. * Take advantage of lost pet posting sites on the Internet.
