By O.I. Seenya • Another black bear spotted in Roane County. This time it was in Salem Valley south of Kingston.

• Arby’s Restaurant is searching for a permanent site in Roane County.

• An elk seen crossing the major highway in Oliver Springs.

• ”I don’t see the big deal about not shopping on Thanksgiving Day. We do it every Sunday on God’s Day.” • Utility truck going through Oliver Springs throwing there McDonald's trash out the window.

Something was found that belongs to a 1961 graduate from Harriman High School. No name, but has initials.

Oliver Springs Depot Museum

Richard Oliver, for whom the town was renamed, was the first to commercialize the natural mineral springs in the area which attracted travelers from all over the United States. Mineral springs were widely regarded as alleviating a variety of physical ailments.

To accommodate these travelers, Oliver opened a beautiful, 150 room luxury hotel known as The Richards House, which catered to wealthy visitors who came to drink and bathe in the springs. Sadly, the hotel burned down in 1895, though the original hotel ticket booth remains in the Oliver Springs Railroad Depot Museum.

This unique museum, housed in an 1897 train depot, contains historical artifacts and photos of Oliver Springs' rich mining history.

A restored southern caboose, horse-drawn fire wagon, and a 1950 Oliver Springs fire truck are located next to the museum.

Southern R.R. Depot Built the structure in 1896, it was acquired by the Oliver Springs Historical Society, restored, and opened to the public as a Museum and Library.

Killing a Hog Growing up in Emory Gap was a great experience. I remember every Fall, Daddy and my uncle J.B. Lemons would kill a hog in the backyard.

I don’t remember us actually having a hog there, but I do remember going around the neighborhood collecting scraps.

All the neighbors would hang a 5 gallon bucket on a fence post, and put their daily leftovers in them. I would take a big bucket and empty their scraps into mine.

They were heavy for a little girl, but that was one of my daily chores.

Before Daddy and J.B. shot the hog, they would make all the kids in the neighborhood go into their houses.

I recall several of us waiting in our house until we heard the shotgun go off. Then, Daddy would holler and let us know it was ok to come outside. We’d all then run out and watch them slaughter the hog.

We kept all the meat in an old wooden box on the front porch.

No matter how much I tried, I could not eat the hog. Not because of the fact that I saw it being slaughtered, I just couldn’t stand the taste of all that salt.

Mama and Daddy would salt it down so much, it was unbearable to me.

So, needless to say, I went without eating meat all winter. But Mama made sure we had a good meal everyday, even if all I wanted to eat was the vegetables.

The government probably won’t let you kill your own hog in a residential area anymore, and thinking back on the experience of it all, maybe that is probably a good thing!

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans.

It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.)

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving.

Top Five Thanksgiving Movies

Home for the Holidays

What better way to commemorate the great American holiday than with a lineup of Thanksgiving movies? Sure, they're not all centered around the proverbial dining table, but these movies do have one thing in common: reminders that we can be thankful for lots of things -- at Thanksgiving or any time of year. From heartwarming classics to laugh-out-loud comedies to historical dramas, we have your viewing needs covered, with not a turkey in the bunch! Let's start out with a counter-cultural film that centers on a Thanksgiving dinner gone awry.

Son-in-law

Crawl (Pauly Shore) is a big city boy who travels to the Midwest for Thanksgiving, pretending to be the fiancé of a farmer's daughter he befriended at an L.A. college. His guise as Rebecca's fiancé is designed to discourage an overly ambitious suitor in her hometown, but the strait-laced innocent (Carla Gugino) eventually falls for Crawl as he bungles his way through a series of down-home traditions. Even her suspicious family comes around in the end, as Crawls unflagging enthusiasm wins them over. For a fun watch that doesn't require a lot of cerebral musings, this is a great pick for Thanksgiving viewing -- for the whole family.

The Blind Side

Sandra Bullock's Oscar-winning performance in "The Blind Side" made it one of 2009's most viewed box office movies. Bullock, who plays wealthy no-nonsense Southern mom Leigh Anne Tuohy, takes in Michael Oher -- a homeless football prodigy (Quinton Aaron) who eventually becomes a first-round NFL draft pick. The movie makes our top 10 not only because it's a compelling account of actual events, but also because we can watch it time and again -- particularly for the way it weaves together a family.

Our favorite scene? When the privileged family tucks into a take-out Thanksgiving dinner in front of a blaring TV, then follows Oher to the dining room table for a conversation-filled meal that plays a pivotal role in the movie's outcome.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

This 1987 film follows Neal Page (Steve Martin) and Del Griffith (John Candy) on a journey of Odysseus-like proportions. The impromptu duo's nearly failed attempt to return from a business trip in time for Thanksgiving dinner leads to a likable stint of self-discovery. Soon, each man realizes he isn't quite the easy-going-peach-of-a-guy he assumed he was, and we figure out that what started as a comedy offers a few redemptive lessons, too, like caring for a nearly total stranger. It's enough to make us feel a little smarmy and wistful -- which is just the right mood for a family Thanksgiving.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

When Peppermint Patty ("C'mon, you can do it, Chuck!") and her friends finagle Charlie Brown into serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, it's up to Woodstock and Snoopy to make the day a success. Thanks to daring dishes like buttered toast and popcorn, and a memorable struggle with an uncooperative folding chair, Snoopy lends his own brand of wordless charm to the day's events. As the gang gathers around a ping-pong table for their unique meal, the true meaning of Thanksgiving shines through. A classic for parents and grandparents alike -- and sure to become a fast favorite of younger generations -- this 1973 animated Emmy-winner tops our list for sentimental fun.

A reader’s response to our spanking article The whole idea of spanking loses its power if the authority of the parent is lost. If a child believes that parents don't have the right to spank me, then the parent has lost authority over the child.

The idea of spanking is not to teach the child that it is okay to hit but rather that disobedience reaps discipline and that the person with the authority dispenses that discipline.

The idea that discipline is not supposed to hurt makes no sense. There is no deterrent if the child gets only a ''No, No, now have a seat."

Probably half the people of America can testify that it is a blessing to sit down in a recliner and take a break. Time outs mean the child sits there and does not work, does not play nice, and does not have to do anything but sit.

So the child can go ahead and sock Johnny in the eye or kick Sally in the shin and then go and sit in his little naughty chair. Johnny is hurting, Sally is hurting, but naughty boy is relaxing in a chair.

When a parent spanks a child, the parent is not teaching the child to hit. The parent is teaching the child that he does not have the authority to hit. Parents have the authority to spank only their own children.

Are parents really willing to give this authority to train their children over to the State run foster-care system? - A system that throws our children into foster care homes where the foster care parents want only the dollars they get every month? A foster care system where children are being raped, left at home by themselves, go hungry, beaten and finally, at the age of sixteen told that there is the world, get out there and make it on your own. Yes, at the age of sixteen, the child is no longer protected by the foster care system. The sixteen year old child is kicked out to fend for himself or herself.

Our senators, governors, mayors, and other political leaders have been spanked.

All probably agree that being spanked is not pleasant but the majority have turned out well-behaved.

The last twenty years have been a nightmare for parents who have been afraid to spank their children-afraid the state is going to snatch their children.

Furthermore, our schools are reaping the results of no-spanking actions of the state.

As is obvious, I am an advocate of spanking-not beating-but spanking. I feel much grief for parents trying to tell their child, don't pull that off; no you can't have that candy, and the child screaming back at the parent-grabbing, running-when the answer is so easily accomplished by three licks on a padded seat.

A properly disciplined child is a blessing to be around, but when the child is allowed to run the household, it is a nightmare.

If children are taught by the age of five to respect the authority of the parent rarely ever after does the parent have to spank the child again. The child just doesn't need a spanking.

Spanking is not the evil that adults seem to want to make it out to be. Love is the motivation of healthy spanking. As stated in Proverbs 13:24-He that spareth his rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chastitheth him betimes. The parent wants the child to respect others: classmates, teachers, police, the law. Who has given parents the authority to train the child? The answer is in the Bible: Colossians 3:20-Children, obey your parents in all things; for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Ephesians 6:1-Children obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

On the other hand, parents are not to provoke their children to wrath as is stated in the few verses following those listed above.

To tell Johnny that "if you don't stop that behavior, I will have to give you a spanking" is a warning. Johnny has a choice-if I stop this action, I won't get a spanking. The choice is his. He is not forced to continue in his misbehavior. However, if he continues with his misbehavior and the spanking never happens, then he will misbehave again and again until the parents have a fourteen or fifteen year old boy (or girl) who doesn't care if he does what a person in authority tells him to do or not to do.

The authority that is being ignored can be not only the parent, but also, the teacher, the police or other authority figure.

To make a law that would imprison parents, take their children and put them in foster care-all because they spanked their child implies that the state is right, God is wrong.

There is not one place in the Bible that even hints that there should be a law stating that '"thou shalt not spank a child."

God's way has worked for years and years. Only when man decided that another person-the state-knew better than a parent how to raise the child did our school system and police departments become overwhelmed with defiant children.

If the state takes children away from loving parents by virtue of an unGodly law, what does the state shove the child into? Are those foster care parents something besides human beings such as angels without fault? Can anyone be sure that the foster parents are better than the biological parent? The foster care system results in horror story after horror story. Ask the adults coming out from the foster care system.

All parents are not saints, but unless extreme cruelty has been happening, parents are the ones who should be in control of their children.

Even foster parents have their hands tied by the ridiculous idea of no spanking. One foster parent was told by a seven year old foster child coming into the home for the first time-with pointed finger-"I can do anything I want to and you cannot do a thing about it." What an outrage. Consider Proverbs 22:15-Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

What I want to know is from what source are those who are against spanking getting their information? Do they get their ideas from God's word? I don't think so.

The end of the argument is that parents should be able to decide for themselves if a spank to the posterior is better than "No, have a seat."

Not all foster care parents are bad, but there is no logic to some of the rules of law. Splitting up siblings, tossing children from home to home, keeping children in turmoil is not the answer. Why inflict children into that turmoil over the issue of spanking?

A Lesson From An Ant

Brenda was a young woman that wanted to learn to go rock climbing. Although she was scared to death she went with a group and they faced this tremendous cliff of rock. Practically perpendicular.

In spite of her fear, she put on the gear and she took a hold of the rope and she started up the face of that rock.

Well, she got to a ledge where she could take a breather. As she was hanging on there, whoever was holding the rope up at the top of the cliff made a mistake and snapped the rope against Brenda's eye and knocked out her contact lens.

You know how tiny contact lenses are and how almost impossible to find. Well, here she is on a rock ledge, with who knows how many hundreds of feet behind and hundreds of feet above her. Of course, she looked and looked and looked, hoping that she would be able to find that contact lens. Here she was, very far from home. Her sight was now blurry. She was very upset by the fact that she wouldn't be anywhere near a place where she could get a new contact lens. And she prayed that the Lord would help her to find it.

Well, her last hope was that perhaps when she got to the top of the cliff, one of the girls that was up there on the top might be able to find her contact lens in the corner of her eye. When she got to the top, a friend examined her eye. There was no contact lens to be found. She sat down with the rest of the party, waiting for the rest of them to come up the face of the cliff.

She looked out across range after range of mountains, thinking of that Bible verse that says, "The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth." She thought, "Lord, You can see all these mountains. You know every single stone and leaf that's on those mountains and You know exactly where my contact lens is."

Finally, the time came when it was time to go down. They walked down the trail to the bottom. Just as they got there, there was a new party of rock climbers coming along. As one of them started up the face of the cliff, she shouted out, "Hey, you guys! Anybody lose a contact lens?"

Well, that would be startling enough, wouldn't it? She had found the contact lens! But you know why she saw it? An ant was carrying that contact lens so that it was moving slowly across the face of the rock.

What does that tell you about the God of the universe? Is He in charge of the tiniest things? Do ants matter to Him? Of course they do. He made them. He designed them.

Brenda told me that her father is a cartoonist. When she told him this incredible story, he drew a picture of that ant lugging that contact lens with the words: "Lord, I don't know why You want me to carry this thing. I can't eat it and it's awfully heavy. But if this is what You want me to do, I'll carry it for You." If God is in charge of the ants, don't you think He cares about you and me? I guess Solomon was right.

One could learn a valuable lesson from that ant -- trust in God. We could probably all say a little more often, "God, I don't know why you want me to carry this load. I see no good in it and it's awfully heavy.

Still, if you want me to, I'll carry it for You."

When you receive truly extraordinary service, though, a letter or email to the airline praising the work of a specific flight attendant or crew is most appreciated and can sincerely help a flight attendant's career.

But that means you've got to pack smart and, should you happen to sneak past the gatekeepers with a bag that's too big for the overhead bin, fess up and let them check it for you. Turning to an available flight attendant and asking, "What do you suggest I do with this bag?" is only opening up a conversation about what that overworked, underpaid flight attendant might wish you actually would do with that bag. Flight attendants go through careful screening during the hiring process, then comprehensive training before they start working with the public. For a good flight attendant, a smile and a friendly "sir" or "ma'am" is not just a good idea but also a job responsibility. For the best service possible, take a page from their playbook: Make eye contact, smile, address them the way you would a friend or neighbor, and you'll be amazed and how much more likely you are to get that extra blanket, cup of water, or sympathetic ear. (Sure, this precept should be obvious--but take a quick look around the plane to see how little it is observed among busy, cranky fliers!)

Special Occasion? Spread The Love!

If you're flying on a honeymoon, anniversary, or other special occasion, flight attendants love to be looped in. They can help you make a little onboard fuss (the good kind!) and might even congratulate you over the PA system. If you're traveling with kids, it's basically always a special occasion, and the crew will do its best to accommodate a cockpit visit when the plane is on the ground. Just ask-but don't hit the call button!

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes

Household Hints Pop a slice of lemon into the water when boiling to help it smell nice.

Remove coffee or tea stains from the bottom of a mug by swishing white vinegar around it.

Freshen up your bin by placing a tumble dryer sheet at the bottom before putting in a bin bag.

Clean fridge seals by using an old toothbrush and toothpaste or bicarbonate of soda.

Get in a habit of cleaning out your refrigerator every time you bring home groceries. Dispose of any food that is no longer edible or your family is not going to eat.

Place an opened box of bicarbonate of soda behind the toilet to absorb nasty odors.

To organize clutter in the bathroom, purchase an attractive storage container with a handle on top. Place all of your accessories such as hair spray and lotion, in the container and place under the sink.

Take the container out when you are ready to use it and then put it back under the sink when you are finished with it.

Freshen sinks by popping two fizzy indigestion tablets and 250ml of vinegar down the plug hole.

After a shower, quickly give the doors and tiles a quick rinse off.

This will help prevent the build-up of soap scum.

To keep shower tiles cleaner for longer wax them with car polish after giving them a good clean. This will help stop the grime from sticking to them.

Clean the bathroom after your shower in the morning. A quick spray around with some cleaner whilst everything is coated in hot steam helps the cleaning and it only takes a few minutes. The bathroom is then always bright and shiny and clean Keep necklaces and bracelets from tangling by hanging off a mug tree or putting hooks inside your wardrobe.

Dry wet shoes more quickly by putting crumpled balls of newspaper inside them.

HATTIE SHILLINGS If you find yourself with plenty of leftover turkey from that delicious Thanksgiving Dinner, then give these recipes a try. You can even freeze the turkey to use later.

Turkey & Potato Casserole 1 pound cooked turkey meat, shredded 1onion, chopped 1 (14.5 ounce) can green beans, drained 1 (10.75 oz) can cream of mushroom soup

8 ounces cubed Cheddar cheese 8 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese 4 cups prepared mashed potatoes

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2. Place turkey in an even layer on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with a layer of onion and a layer of green beans so that the turkey is no longer visible. Pour the condensed soup over the onion layer, then sprinkle with shredded cheese. Stir together the cubed cheese and mashed potatoes; spoon over the top of the casserole, and spread to cover.

3. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, until heated through.

Turkey Tetrazzini 1 (16 ounce) package uncooked spaghetti 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 3 cups chicken broth

2 cups milk 1 2/3 cups grated Parmesan cheese 4 cups chopped cooked turkey

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Lightly grease a baking dish.

2. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti, and cook for 8 to 10 minutes.

Drain, and place in the prepared baking dish.

3. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour. Mix in chicken broth and milk. Cook and stir until the mixture comes to a boil. Stir in about 1 1/3 cups Parmesan cheese, and remove from heat.

4. Mix chicken broth mixture and turkey with spaghetti. Top with remaining cheese. Bake 1 hour in the preheated oven, until surface is lightly browned.

In a medium bowl, mix together mayonnaise with paprika and seasoned salt. Blend in dried cranberries, celery, bell pepper, onion, and nuts. Add chopped chicken, and mix well. Season with black pepper to taste. Chill 1 hour.

Traditionally, Americans looking to supplement their employer-sponsored retirement plans, Social Security and personal savings have generally turned to one place — Wall Street. Where else can pre-retirees turn? As it turns out, hybrid annuities — provide benefits even a bullish market would be hard-pressed to beat; and chief among those benefits is a guaranteed stream of income that cannot be outlived. For the right client, a suitable hybrid annuity can mitigate much of the anxiety surrounding retirement and increasing longevity.

Despite the obvious benefits of these annuity products, new research from a Fidelity Investments survey suggests that even though the majority of America retirees are far more concerned with generating a guaranteed stream of income than they are with gambling to earning better-than-average gains with stock market investments, consumers don’t know enough about hybrid annuity products and the safety they provide. This is especially alarming when you consider that in this survey of investors between the ages of 55 and 70 with at least $100,000 in investable assets, all of whom worked with a fee-based or registered investment advisor, an astonishing 86 percent of the respondents expressed interest in a product that could guarantee a lifetime of monthly income with some stock market relationship but without the normal downside risk factors..

But the Federal Reserve Board Survey of Consumer Finance 2007 shows that only 5.5 percent of American families own an annuity. How could it be that so many people want a product just like a hybrid annuity, but so few actually own one? In short, it all comes down to four words: lack of product understanding on the part of their advisors.

For example, although 57 percent of the Fidelity surveys respondents said they had a general understanding of annuities, only a mere 20 percent could correctly identify the correct definition of an annuity in a test.

This lack of education is not only preventing Americans from accessing an amazing retirement and income planning tool, it’s also keeping advisors from successfully insulating their client’s from market risk. When the survey asked participants why they did not own an annuity, 41 percent said they didn’t know enough about the product to buy one, and another 35 percent said that their advisors had never recommended a guaranteed hybrid annuity.

Here Comes The Judge

The US judge who jailed a man for yawning in court In 2009, a no-nonsense judge jailed a man for six months for yawning loudly in his courtroom and locked up another after his mobile phone rang during a hearing.

Circuit Judge Daniel Rozak sentenced Clifton Williams to six months jail for yawning loudly when the judge sentenced his cousin to two years probation. The cousin walked out but Clifton didn't, and he had to spend three weeks behind bars. The prosecutor in the case said Clifton's yawn wasn't routine and was a "loud and boisterous" attempt to disrupt the courtroom. But a Tribune review of contempt of court charges over the past decade shows Rozak jails people on contempt charges more frequently than any other judge in his county. Rozak was responsible for more than a third of all contempt charges laid by 30 judges in the 12th Judicial Circuit over the past 10 years. Those jailed were typically spectators whose cell phones rang or who screamed or shouted profanities during sentencing.

The judge who ducted tape to keep noisy defendant's mouth shut Also in 2009, a Judge got fed up with repeated interruptions from a robbery suspect so he ordered a deputy to put duct tape over the defendant's mouth to shut him up. Municipal Court Judge Stephen Belden says the taping was the best way to restore order at a hearing for 51-year-old Harry Brown of Canton after the defendant argued with despite being ordered to be quiet. Brown complained that his court-appointed attorney wasn't prepared and angered the judge, in Canton, Ohio, US, with his interruptions. After a warning, the judge told the bailiff to tape Brown's mouth shut. When the tape was removed, the defendant said the judge wasn't being respectful. The judge ended the hearing and sent the case to a grand jury.

The judge who passed a sentence over the phone because the defendant was late to court A driver stuck in traffic on his way to court was sentenced by a judge - over his mobile phone. The judge didn't want to incur more costs by adjourning the case. Aftab Ahmed, 41, called his lawyer as the case started and explained he was going to be late. Judge Caroline Ludlow decided to continue because she had a full diary and had to sit in a county court later in the day. She had already ruled out a prison sentence on Ahmed, who admitted a charge relating to his bankruptcy. First, Judge Ludlow told Ahmed's lawyer, Kevin McCarthy, to call him and check he was not breaking the law by using his mobile while driving. After hearing mitigation from Mr McCarthy, the judge rang Ahmed again and sentenced him to 140 hours of community service with £750 costs. Ahmed, of Bury St Edmunds, was stuck in stationary traffic for two hours on the A14 in Suffolk before police got vehicles to turn round. The clerk of Ipswich Crown Court, Rachel Bonner said: "The judge didn't want to incur more costs by adjourning the case."

The judge who tried himself, convicted himself and then released himself for good behavior In 1874, Francis Evans Cornish, while acting as a magistrate in Winnipeg, Canada, had to try himself on a charge of being drunk in public. He convicted himself and fined himself five dollars with costs. But then he stated for the record: “Francis Evans Cornish, taking into consideration past good behavior, your fine is remitted”.

A judge in the US was removed from the bench for jailing 46 people after none of them would admit to having a cell phone that began ringing during his court session.

Judge Robert Restaino, of Niagara Falls, New York, 'snapped' and 'engaged in what can only be described as two hours of inexplicable madness' during the 2005 session.

Restaino, who became a full-time judge in 2002, was hearing domestic violence cases when a phone rang. 'Everyone is going to jail,' the judge said.'Every single person is going to jail in this courtroom unless I get that instrument now. If anybody believes I'm kidding, ask some of the folks that have been here for a while. You are all going.'

When no one came forward, the judge ordered the group into custody and they were taken by police to the city jail, where they were searched and packed into crowded cells. Fourteen people who could not post bail were shackled and bused to the Niagara County Jail, a 30-minute drive away.

Later in the afternoon, after being told reporters were calling, the judge ordered the defendants released. The judge told the state panel he was under stress in his personal life.

Harriman Basketball 2014-2015 Preview After posting a 6 win season and finishing 6th in District 4A only a year removed from winning the District Championship, the Harriman Boys Basketball program will look to regain supremacy atop the district in the 2014-2015 season.

The Blue Devils will turn to Senior Jacob Gresham to lead the way. Gresham led the team in points per game last year. Harriman Assistant Coach Darren Payne is excited about the year Gresham could have. “Jacob is a strong, physical player with a nice mid-range game and finishes very well around the basket. Physically, he has all the attributes you want in a player, but needs to keep working on emotional and mental aspect of his game to maximize his potential.”

Harriman also returns their leader in total points and rebounds from last season, freshman John Johnson, who will look to use his length and athleticism to create some mis-match opportunities. “John is a versatile player who can score in a variety of ways. His height and athleticism creates an advantage for him. He has put in a lot of work in the offseason, especially in the weight room. He took it a lot more serious this year and I think his frame is noticeably different than as a freshman. We are looking for John to step up and take on a bigger role defensively this season.”

Harriman also has some new faces on the team this year aside from the freshman coming in. Senior Javian Witherspoon will look to contribute heavily. “Javian is a great kid first off. He has an unbelievable motor and plays extremely hard from start to finish. Although he is a “tweener”, he has the strength of a forward with the handles of a guard. Javian just has a knack for being around the ball and he finishes very well. He also possesses great body control. You really can’t teach that.” The other two new faces this year are sophomores Joe Pace and Hayden Bingham. Both players fill a need and are expected to contribute sooner than later. Joe is an extremely competitive kid that hopefully will pick up the bulk of ball handling duties as well as guard the other team’s best scorer most nights. Payne says “He sees the floor extremely well for a young player and he can play fast without turning the ball over. He is also extremely athletic and has a high basketball IQ,- those are always pluses for your point guard.”

Hayden will step in and immediately be one of the long range shooters on the team. “Hayden is a great kid that has put in some work in the offseason in the weight room and I think he is primed to have a solid year as a sophomore. He is always working on his shot, so I’m expecting that to pay off for him at some point, hopefully it’s sooner than later. There’s always a role for a shooter.” Harriman’s sophomore class also welcomes new additions TJ Phipps and Wisdom Martin. TJ is an athletic kid who has been able to contribute early on the football field and will now look to find success on the basketball floor as well. Wisdom was with Harriman briefly during pre-season conditioning last season before transferring to Kingston and looking forward to getting a full season under his belt.

Some familiar returning faces include Senior Cody Williams, Juniors Bobby Jackson, Logan “Jeter” Cox, and Armonte Ewing, and sophomores JoJo Luna, Isaiah McClain and Nick Staggs. “Cody gives us a very physical presence in the paint. He has a toughness about him that all of our guys could take note from. Bobby will be expected to take on some of the ball handling duties and is one of the most improved players on the team in all aspects. Jeter is a solid guard who always seems to be in the right spot and one of our better 3 point shooters. Armonte is pure energy all the time . Several players would earn more time if they played as hard as Monte does on a consistent basis.

JoJo is a fierce on ball defender that can really cause havoc to an opponent’s offense. Isaiah missed most of last season with an injury, but is finally starting to get healthy.

He is one of our most skilled players in the program and probably our best ball handler. Isaiah figures to be a staple in the Blue Devils lineup when his body matures and he’s physically ready to compete at the varsity level. Nick is one our hardest workers and best teammates. Nick is going to be a really productive player at some point in our program if he continues to progress at his current rate.

Rounding out the Harriman roster will be Freshman Spencer Moore, Dalton Briley, Hunter Burnheimer, Keeshaun Love, Sheldon Anderson, Sean Monkhouse, Wesley Vann and Cody Watson As the Blue Devils look to make a deeper run into the post-season this year, Coaches Willie Gallahar, Quentin Young, Darren Payne and Wesley Jones want to encourage everyone to come out and support these young men. “They have put in a ton of work in the off-season and I think it is going to pay off for them. We would like to extend an invitation to everyone in Harriman, as well as the entire county to come check out Harriman Basketball this year. I think we have a chance to win at a higher rate this season and I believe we will have an entertaining brand of basketball for our fans this year.”

The mouse turned to the cow and said "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose."

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital, and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember the mouse in the house.

Rockwood Memories When I was Young

When I moved to Eureka at about five years old, Tommy Long was my neighbor and being a few years older than I, he was someone I really looked up to. Since I moved back to Rockwood a few years ago, Tommy and I have renewed our friendship. He told me a story recently that I promised to tell the readers in this edition. I hope I get it right, I was laughing so hard that I couldn't take notes and my memory is not what it used to be, but here goes....

Tommy and Bobby Dodd were living in Eureka and were probably twelve years old or so, and loved to sneak out of their houses at night and go bike riding to the lake. Jimmy Hall lived nearby and was a couple of years younger. He always wanted to join them, so plans were made one evening to sneak out and go swimming. About midnight, or one in the morning, Tommy and Bobby left their house and rode to Jimmy Hall's place. Slipping into the house to awaken Jimmy, Bobby pulled his shoes off in the kitchen. They crept into Jimmy's bedroom. What they didn't know was that Mrs. Hall, (Jimmy's mother) had switched bedrooms with her son. Bobby crept up to the bed and shook what he thought was Jimmy's shoulder. When Mrs. Hall raised up, it scared Bobby and Tommy too and they ran through the kitchen tripping over Jimmy's bike that was in the room. While outside, Bobby realized he had left his shoes inside and went back in to get them. While back inside the dark house, and if you knew Bobby, he was dark complexioned and hard to recognize in the dark. Mrs. Hall thought she was being attacked and screamed out for her husband, "Winfred, Winfred'. He wasn't home that night or he might have shot someone. By this time Bobby and Tommy were outside and Mrs. McClendon lived nearby. Harold Butler heard the commotion and came outside and joined the boys. Mrs. McClendon went to check on the Butler triplets and saw Harold was gone. "O Lord, they have kidnapped Harold," she screamed. Running up a hill, an outhouse was nearby. Into the outhouse the boys ran, but it was already occupied by a woman who almost fainted. The boys hid in some nearby pine trees on the hill and finished watching all of the commotion below. That must have been quite an evening. I am sure that I will have more tales from the Eureka gang in issues to come.

While driving through Eureka the other day and around by the old Rockwood Beach area I remember one year our July Fourth Celebration was moved from the football field to the beach. The year was 1956. Around five hundred people attended and the highlight was the crowning of Miss Tennessee Valley. An evening gown and talent competition was held the previous night at the Rockwood High Gymnasium. The contestants that year were Vicki Brinkley, Syble Riggs, Gail Mee, Barbara Kessing, Jeanie Smith, Nanita Greeene, Elizabeth McCulley, Irene Kendrick, Emma Morgan and Janie Fulmer.

How the judges could pick a winner from this group is beyond me. The winners were Nanita Greene, first place; Jeanie Smith, second; and Vicki Brinkley third. There was a Little Miss Rockwood contest also with the prizes going to Jamie Lynn Swanner,(daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.L.Swanner), Amy Mrie Shacklett,(daughter of Dr. and Mrs. George Shacklett) and Gloria True, (daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luther True). Mrs. Tom Pemberton said that all of the fireworks in the gigantic display were all set pieces and not loud explosives...Ah what memories of a wonderful time and place....

Whose business is it, if I choose to read, or play on the computer, until 4 AM, or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50s, 60s & 70s, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will.

I will walk the beach, in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves, with abandon, if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And, eventually, I remember the important thing.

Sure, over the years, my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break, when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength, and understanding, and compassion.

A heart never broken, is pristine, and sterile, and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be.

And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it).

Did you burn the turkey? Don’t fret...

Salmonella won't be a concern No one will overeat.

Everyone will think it's Cajun Blackened.

Uninvited guests will think twice next year.

Your cheese broccoli lima bean casserole will gain newly found appreciation.

Carving the bird will provide a good cardiovascular workout.

Do This BEFORE You Have Kids

1. Go to amusement parks. Once you have kids, your visits will be dominated by costumed characters, sing-a-longs, and kiddie rides. Before that happens, you should make a trip when you ride the scariest roller coasters and stay out as late as you like.

2. Adopt a dog. Fur babies are great at preparing you for kids.

3. Read books about the parenting experience. The “baby books” are worthwhile reads, but they only teach you how to take care of your baby for the first year or so. Books like Carrie and Me, though, are more important to read because they give you a glimpse at the totality of the parenting experience: the joys, frustrations, and ultimate brilliance of it all.

4. Move somewhere you’ve always wanted to live. Dream of knowing what it’s like to live in New York, on a ranch in Wyoming, or in a foreign country? If so, you need to take the plunge now, because making such a huge life change after kids is much, much more complicated.

5. Travel. Seeing the world is a whole lot easier when you have to buy one plane ticket instead of, say, four.

6. Stop drinking if you have a problem. You don’t have to quit drinking just because you become a parent, but if drinking is a problem or becoming one (and you know deep down if it is), then you need to address the issue. It’s not fair to bring a child into the world if you don’t.

7. Ask your parents what it was really like to be a parent. Your parents likely shielded you from their daily struggles when you were little, but now you can (and should) ask them what it was really like raising you. What did they find most difficult? Did kids put a strain on their relationship? Speaking openly about these questions will help you understand what having kids will really be like.

8. Really get to know, and enjoy the company of, your partner. Spending a couple years or more focusing on each other will give you a strong foundation to draw on when you have kids and things get harder (which they tend to do).

9. Finish school. While it is possible to finish school when you have kids, it’s not easy because in addition to school you have to financially support a family AND be someone’s mom or dad. If you can finish school now, instead of later, you should.

10. Eat at adult restaurants. Once you have kids, eating out will almost exclusively happen at family-friendly restaurants (with the rare exception of when you go to the trouble and expense of hiring a babysitter), so experience those cool restaurants now.

11. Get your crazies out. A lament you hear from some parents is that they never got to be young and have fun. Once you have a child, they officially become the kid and you’re now the responsible adult. So don’t rush it if you feel like you should still be having your fun.

12. Establish your career (as much as possible). As we’ve established, kids ain’t cheap. So if you can dedicate yourself to getting ahead at work before you have kids, you’ll be in a better position to take care of them. (You’ll also be in a better position to slip out to T-ball games.)

13. Learn how to do something you’ve always wanted to master. This not only will give you a great sense of fulfillment, but keep you from spending the next 20 years saying, “When these kids are finally out of the house and I have some time I’m going to learn to play the guitar once and for all!”

14. Do something spontaneous. A parent’s life is pretty much the opposite of spontaneous, so when you’re kid-free and able to, for example, go to Vegas at the drop of a hat, you should, when you can.

15. Get right with yourself. If you have unresolved issues from your childhood, insecurities that are holding you back, or anything else you need to remedy about yourself, the time is now. You can’t guide someone toward being the best possible person they can be when you haven’t made sure you’re the best possible person you can be.

Daddy’s Little Girl She's so little, so vulnerable. She doesn't seem concerned about it as she sings about teapots and ladybugs. I feel myself tear up as I watch her.

I tear up as I watch him watch her. She could not possibly know what impact this man, his character or his words will have on her for years to come.

So, to all the daddies with little girls who aren't old enough yet to ask for what they need from you, here is what we wish you knew: 1. How you love me is how I will love myself.

2. Ask how I am feeling and listen to my answer, I need to know you value me before I can understand my true value.

3. I learn how I should be treated by how you treat my mom, whether you are married to her or not.

4. If you are angry with me, I feel it even if I don't understand it, so talk to me.

5. Every time you show grace to me or someone else, I learn to trust God a little more.

6. I need to experience your nurturing physical strength, so I learn to trust the physicality of men.

7. Please don't talk about sex like a teenage boy, or I think it's something dirty.

8. When your tone is gentle, I understand what you are saying much better.

9. How you talk about female bodies when you're "just joking" is what I believe about my own.

10. How you handle my heart, is how I will allow it to be handled by others.

11. If you encourage me to find what brings joy, I will always seek it.

12. If you teach me what safe feels like when I'm with you, I will know better how to guard myself from men who are not.

13. Teach me a love of art, science, and nature, and I will learn that intellect matters more than dress size.

14. Let me say exactly what I want even if it's wrong or silly, because I need to know having a strong voice is acceptable to you.

It's pretty simple, really. Little girls just love their daddies. They each think their daddy hung the moon. Once in a while when you look at your little gal twirling in her frilly skirt, remember she'll be grown one day. What do you want her to know about men, life, herself, love? What you do and say now matters for a lifetime. Daddies, never underestimate the impact of your words or deeds on your daughters, no matter their age.

A Jewel - The Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is one of the true jewels of world art. After spending four years painting it, Michelangelo finished his masterpiece in 1512, and the chapel went into daily use. In those days the only light source came from candles. As candles burned year after year, the soot began to rise to the ceiling, obscuring the paintings. After over 400 years of soot, grime, and dust collecting on the ceiling, the original art had to be restored. So a team of restorative artists worked on the Sistine Chapel from 1984-1999 until the monochrome colors were restored to their original beauty.

Prior to the restoration process, many in the art community thought that Michelangelo was a genius at composition. After all, how did he think to have Adam's hand stretching out, yearning to find the finger of God, which was already reaching out for him? But it was also widely-believed that Michelangelo's coloration was mediocre.

It was too dark, monochromatic, and blah. And yet when they restored those frescoes to their original state, everyone could see the beautiful, fresh, and even spring-like colors—pale pink, apple green, vivid yellow, and sky blue against a background of warm pearly grey. When the maker's true brilliance and goodness were revealed, people had to change their assumptions about Michelangelo.

In a similar way, for many us, over the years the soot, grime, and dust of daily life have obscured our vision of God's goodness. God's character seems blah, mediocre, and maybe even dark. We no longer feel and deeply believe that through Christ we have a good Father.

Through the Word of God, the Spirit's presence, and the love of other Christians, God begins a work of restoration so we can see the true colors of his brilliant goodness.

A Turkey's Lament When I was a young turkey, new to the coop, My big brother Mike took me out on the stoop, Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow, And he told me there was something that I had to know; His look and his tone I will always remember, When he told me of the horrors of ..... Black November; "Come about August, now listen to me, Each day you'll be thick, where once you were thin, And you'll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin.

"And then one morning, when you're warm in your bed, In'll burst the farmer's wife, and hack off your head; "Then she'll pluck out all your feathers so you're bald'n pink, And scoop out all your insides and leave ya lyin' in the sink, "And then comes the worst part" he said not bluffing, "She'll spread your cheeks and pack your rear with stuffing".

Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat, I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat, And decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked, I'd have to lay low and remain overlooked; I began a new diet of nuts and granola, High-roughage salads, juice and diet cola, And as they ate pastries, chocolates and crepes, I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes, I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half, And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed; But 'twas I who was laughing, under my breath, As they chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death; And sure enough when Black November rolled around, I was the last turkey left in the entire compound; So now I'm a pet in the farmer's wife's lap; I haven't a worry, so I eat and I nap, She held me today, while sewing and humming, And smiled at me and said "Christmas is coming........"
