• County Sheriffs Department thinking a fold out car key is a switchblade knife, Owner of car key did not set off metal detector but was patted down while man behind him in line had two pocket knives in pocket yet didn't get patted down or knives taken away.

Boy, is something wrong with our way of thinking.

• Street Department constantly driving their tractors in the road on Hwy 70 • Lots of sidewalk work going on in Harriman. I wonder when they are going to fix the roads?

Precious Memories By: Kay Christopher

The old, red city buses While growing up in Emory Gap, I remember the small, old, red city buses that ran twice a day through the Gap. It cost 5 cents to ride to town.

The buses were about half the size of a school bus and usually stayed pretty full of people going to town to shop.

I don’t remember ever getting to ride one of the busses, but I waited on it at the highway everyday, just to see who was on it.

One Saturday I saw Mrs. VanDeGriff, my second grade teacher sitting on the bus, and I got the wild idea that she had went to town to get all the students in her class a present to give it to us on Monday morning.

How I got that idea, I’ll never know, but, needless to say, we didn’t get a present. In fact, that was probably the farthest thing on her mind that day.

The buses ran for several years, but then, due to the big box stores moving in, business in downtown slacked so much they terminated the rides.

I remember for years, seeing the buses parked in town until they were almost faded out to a dull silver-red.

I would love to see a picture of one of those small, red busses, just to bring back even more precious memories.

Love those senior citizens An old married couple is traveling by car. Being seniors, after almost eleven hours on the road, they were too tired to continue and decided to take a room. But, they only planned to sleep for four hours and then get back on the road.

When they checked out four hours later, the desk clerk handed them a bill for $350.00.

The man explodes and demands to know why the charge is so high. He told the clerk although it's a nice hotel; the rooms certainly aren't worth $350.00 for four hours. Then the clerk tells him that $350.00 is the 'standard rate'. He insisted on speaking to the Manager.

The Manager appears, listens to him, and then explains that the hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center that were available for us to use.

"But we didn't use them," the husband said.

"Well, they are here, and you could have," explained the Manager.

The Manager went on to explain that the couple could also have taken in one of the shows for which the hotel is famous. "We have the best entertainers from New York , Hollywood , and Las Vegas perform here," the Manager says.

"But we didn't go to any of those shows," the husband said.

"Well, we have them, and you could have," the Manager replied.

No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, the husband replied, "But we didn't use it!"

The Manager is unmoved, and eventually the husband gave up and agreed to pay. As he didn't have the check book, he asked his wife to write the check. She did and gave it to the Manager.

The Manager is surprised when he looks at the check. "But ma'am, this is made out for only $50.00."

"That's correct. I charged you $300.00 for sleeping with me," she replied.

"But I didn't!" exclaims the Manager.

"Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have."

Don't mess with senior citizens..... They didn't get there by being stupid.

Midway Charlton Heston stars in this epic which recreates the famed battle from the perspective of both sides.

A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.

His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car."

The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut."

The boy said, "you know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that: Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair."

The origin of the calendar months' names JANUARY Named for the Roman god Janus, protector of gates and doorways.

Big Emory Church Breaks Ground Big Emory Baptist Church recently broke ground for a fellowship hall and a new Children’s Church facility. The current building, which was the former Little Emory School house, was purchased in 1978 and has housed the fellowship hall and children’s church facility since that time. The current building has served the church well for many, many years, but the time has come to expand.

The church is growing and space has become an issue at our fellowships; this is an awesome problem to have! We dedicated 25 children in April, and since the dedication, 4 more precious little ones have been welcomed into our congregation, thus presenting the need for a bigger children’s church. The current children’s church has served an abundance of children, ages 4-8, and has definitely suffered some wear & tear.

The youth, led by Youth Pastor Dustin Snow, will take over the current fellowship building for a youth center. The youth has increased by 250% in the last year, and God is using them in a mighty way!

Big Emory Baptist Church, led by Pastor Neil Crass, has so much to offer. The regular services are Sunday School at 10 a.m., Worship services at 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. as well as Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. Also, Team Kids is offered on Wednesday, for kids 0-12, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Youth also meet on Wednesdays at 6:45 p.m. Small group Bible studies have been added to Sunday afternoons at 5:00 p.m. as well.

How to clean your dishwasher * Place a dishwasher-safe cup filled with plain white vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher. Using the hottest water available, run the dishwasher through a cycle – except for the cup of vinegar, the dishwasher needs to be empty.

The vinegar will help to wash away the loose, greasy grime, sanitizes, and helps remove the musty odor. * After using the vinegar to sanitize the inside of the dishwasher, sprinkle a cupful of baking soda around the bottom of the tub and run it through a short but complete cycle using the hottest water.

The baking soda will help freshen the smell of the dishwasher as well as brighten up the look of the inside of your appliance by removing stains. * Now that the dishwasher is clean and running right………here are a few IMPORTANT tips to KEEP it that way….until the next cleaning. (A routine dishwasher cleaning is a good habit to get into. And you have to admit…now that you know how it’s done…it’s not that hard.) *Run the garbage disposal (if you have one) before starting the dishwasher. The dishwasher drains into the same pipe as your sink, so that drain must be clear. *Run a bit of hot water in your sink before running the dishwasher.

You will get cleaner dishes if the water starts hot. You can collect the water you run and use it for watering plants or other purposes.

Run the water until what comes out of the tap feels hot. *Make sure your water starts hot enough. Set the thermostat on your water heater to 120F (50C). Water that is cooler than this won’t do a good job cleaning. Water that is hotter could scald. *Run full loads to conserve water and energy, but don’t pack dishes too tightly. Dishwashers wash dishes by spraying water over them, so the water needs to be able to get to the dishes to clean them. *If you are inclined to pre-wash your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher, consider this. Dishwasher detergent NEEDS a certain amount of grease and dirt in order to do its job. Otherwise, it actually foams up during the cycle which is not good for your dishwasher.

Mother, father, and baby are all doing fine! back of her speech therapy class room while Kylie's back was turned they played drums and she pointed at her ears while her mouth dropped open & eyes got big!

Praise The Lord she did hear!! Please keep her in prayers because we was told it was going to be like watching grass grow and Kylie still has some infections .

Rev. Delma O. Lowery, Th.D

June 9, 1934 - October 8, 2013

Rev. Delma O. Lowery, Th.D, Bible Expositor (79), formally of Harriman passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013, in Colorado Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Elmer Lowery and Fairl Bice Lowery and infant brother, Robert 0. Lowery. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Edna Lee Barger Lowery, 5 brothers and their wives: Charles (Chuck) and Goldie Lowery of Harriman, TN, Hermon (Hump) Lowery of Harriman, TN, Rayman and Jackie Lowery of Hixon, TN, Leon and Wanda Lowery of Harriman, TN, and Bennie and Paula Lowery of Dallas, TX, and 2 sisters-in-law and their husbands: Roma (Barger) and Alton Lingerfelt and Oneda (Barger) and Tony Whalen. Many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends in the U.S. and Canada.

Delma was born June 9, 1934 in Copperhill, TN. Delma graduated from South Harriman High School in 1953 and served in the Army from 1955 to 1957. Delma preached his first sermon on September 29th 1957 at South Harriman Baptist Church and married Edna Lee Barger that afternoon.

He was ordained into the ministry in 1960 at Highland Park Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN; received his B.S. degree in 1962 from Tennessee Temple in Chattanooga, TN; received his M.S. degree in 1972 from Trinity College in Dunedin, FL; and his Doctorate in Theology degree in 1973, also from Trinity College.

Delma's ministry included being in the Pastorate for 12 years, being a writer, an educator, and Bible expositor. Delma founded the Expositor's Bible Center in Newton, IL, where they currently live. He is the author of several books including: Building Steadfast Christians. now in its third printing, The Teachings of Christianity, and A Book of Poetry. Rhymes. Lyrics. Limericks. and Ditties. He also produced DVD's on all of the New Testament Epistles. In 1985, Delma was listed in Who's Who in the World of Religion.

From 1973 until present, Delma has served as a missionary under the sponsorship of Missouri Avenue Baptist Church in Clearwater, FL, traveling in 48 states, 9 provinces of Canada, Jamaica, and Mexico teaching the books of the Bible.

Deborah Jean "Debbie" Terry age 54 of Kingston passed away Wednesday September 25, 2013 at Parkwest Medical Center. She was employed by Roane County Government having served 14 ½ years in the accounting department.

She was a devoted Christian, member, and pianist at The First Christian Church in Harriman.

Michael Chancey, age 61, went to be with the

Lord after a long battle with cancer. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was of the Baptist faith.

Chopsticks

A woman who had worked all her life to bring about good was granted one wish, “Before I die let me visit both hell and heaven.”

Her wish was granted.

She was whisked off to a great banqueting hall. The tables were piled high with delicious food and drink. Around the tables sat miserable, starving people as wretched as could be.

“Why are they like this?” she asked the angel who accompanied her.

“Look at their arms,” the angel replied.

She looked and saw that attached to the people’s arms were long chopsticks secured above the elbow. Unable to bend their elbows, the people aimed the chopsticks at the food, missed every time and sat hungry, frustrated and miserable.

Stout Stuff Built Tuff! - “Old Blue�

The 1979 Ford Mustang LX might not look like much on the outside but that's because this car is wearing 34 years of battle scars. This car is not just any car its a 2.3 Liter 150 horsepower pony stock built for dirt track racing. John T. Stout Jr. (Daddy John) built this car in 1991 to replace "Blackie in Disguise" a 1978 Ford Pinto disguised with a blue and silver paint job. "Blackie in Disguise" was a duplicate of "Blackie" another 1978 pinto that also won many races and several championships but both had to be retired after a couple of major wrecks.

But the Mustang oh yes "Old Blue" was different, this car was only 12 years old when Daddy John took away its chances of ever being a street car again. But "Old Blue" had a far greater destiny than any one of us ever imagined. He cut the roof off and slapped a roll cage in to get something to drive the next season after hauling both "Blackies" to the junk yard. It didn't take long before Daddy John was winning races, then come the championships. Daddy John has won a half dozen championships and raced this car off and on at 7 area race tracks including Wartburg, Crossville, Spring City, Smoky Mountain, 411 and Cleveland for 15 years before retiring himself and passing it on to his oldest son John F. Stout to keep for a back up.

Once all of John F's cars made their way to the bone yard, all that was left was "Old Blue". Reluctant to drive now a nearly 30 year old car he didn't have much of a choice, so he gave it a whirl. John F. drove "Old Blue" to victory lane several times over a few seasons and came home with 2 championships to boot.

During the 2012 season the torch was passed yet again when John F saw an opportunity to move to a new class and left "Old Blue" for his son John Steven Maxwell Stout (Max Stout). Max drove the car for a few races at the end of the season to get a feel for the car, at the age of 15 he had never drove a vehicle much less a racecar. He begin to start experimenting with the feel of the car and then the season was over and he waited anxiously for the 2013 season to start.

The first few races were shaky getting the feel for the car, he had no excuses about setup, ability of the car to handle, not enough motor ect.. This car had been through it all and had won races everywhere, and with a father and grand father not letting him back down he come to the realization that this car practically drove itself and he begin to get more comfortable in the corners. Needless to say it didn't take long for Max to start winning races and becoming very consistent with many top 5 finishes.

Max drove "Old Blue" during his rookie season to win yet another championship, capture rookie of the year, and keep the tradition alive. At 15 years old and driving a 34 year old car its hard to determine if there is something in the blood, something under the hood or just plain luck? I have to believe it is probably a combination of all three. You don't just win championships the first year racing and nobody is a good enough driver to run a stock car for 22 years and only end up with a few minor repairs to fix through the week. There is definitely something to be said about this old car and its pretty amazing to think what else could be accomplished with it. With roughly 10 championships and over 100 wins from four drivers, including Sandra L. Stout winning several powder puff races, this old car has seen its better days.

We may never know if "Old Blue" will win any more races or championships.

The guys don't see much activity for "Old Blue" anymore as Max is ready to move up to a whole new class, they think this is the end of the racecar that has lived the majority of its life on the dirt tracks all around east Tennessee.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes

Household Hints 1. Repaint a coffee table with chalk board paint. Draw a road, game boards, self portraits, work out homework problems, or just let the kids go wild. It will keep them entertained for hours.

2. Slip a paper clip over both ends of the wrapping paper roll to keep it from unrolling before you store it.

3. Tape a zip lock back to the back of appliances such as your microwave. Insert your user manual and warranty so that you always know where it is.

4. When cooking with oil place a pop corn kernel in the oil. You'll know your oil is hot enough when the kernel pops.

5. The lines on a Solo cup are measurement marks.

6. Can't remember which side of the car your gas tank is on? Look at your gas gauge. Most cars have a small arrow pointing to the side that the tank is located.

7. Make a set of 'cheating' dice. Set your oven to 250*. Lay your dice on a cookie sheet with the numbers you want facing up. Place dice in oven and cook for 10 minutes. The plastic inside will melt and then sink to the bottom causing the dice to land on the same side every time.

8. Spraying Rain-X on your shower doors will make the water bounce right off and reduce build-up.

9. When cutting veggies or meat for scrambled eggs or other recipes, using a pizza cutter will make the job a lot quicker than chopping with a knife.

10. Pour water into a mason jar and add a glow stick. Place jars around pools, patios, or sidewalks during you next late night get together.

11. Apply a thin layer of olive oil to your candle holders before you use them. Once the candle has melted the olive oil will allow you to wipe off the wax and keep it from sticking to the candle holder.

12. Too many clothes in your closet? Turn all of your hangers backwards. Once you wear a piece of clothing, hang it back up with the hanger facing forward. At the end of the year, toss any item that are still on hangers facing backwards. If you haven't worn it in a year you probably won’t miss it.

1 pound skinless, boneless chicken 1 teaspoon ground cumin breast meat - finely chopped 1 teaspoon dried oregano 4 tablespoons olive oil 5 cups chicken broth 1 onion, finely diced 2 (15 ounce) cans cannellini beans 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 (4 ounce) can diced green chiles 1 red bell pepper, diced 1/4 cup cornmeal (optional) 1 yellow bell pepper, chopped salt and pepper to taste 1 tablespoon chili powder 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce In a large stock pot, saute chicken, olive oil, onion, garlic, red & yellow bell peppers, until vegetables start to soften. Add chili powder, cumin and oregano. Cook on medium for 3 minutes. Add chicken broth, beans and green chilies and continue to cook on medium low for 5-10 minutes. If you want to thicken soup, mix cornmeal with a little water to form a paste and add to chili. Season with salt, pepper and hot sauce and serve.

Bean Chili

2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 onions, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 pound ground beef 3/4 pound beef sirloin, cubed 1 (14.5 ounce) can peeled and diced tomatoes with juice 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle dark beer 1 cup strong brewed coffee 2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste 1 (14 ounce) can beef broth

1/2 cup packed brown sugar 3 1/2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon cumin seeds 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon salt 4 (15 ounce) cans kidney beans 4 fresh hot chile peppers, seeded and chopped

Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook onions, garlic, ground beef and cubed sirloin in oil for 10 minutes, or until the meat is well browned and the onions are tender.

Mix in the diced tomatoes with juice, dark beer, coffee, tomato paste and beef broth. Season with brown sugar, chili powder, cumin, cocoa powder, oregano, cayenne pepper, coriander and salt. Stir in 2 cans of the beans and hot chile peppers. Reduce heat to low, and simmer for 1 1/2 hours.

Stir in the 2 remaining cans of beans, and simmer for another 30 minutes.

Place chicken and salsa in the slow cooker the night before you want to eat this chili. Season with garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook 6 to 8 hours on Low setting.

About 3 to 4 hours before you want to eat, shred the chicken with 2 forks. Return the meat to the pot, and continue cooking.

Stir the corn and the pinto beans into the slow cooker. Simmer until ready to serve.

Long ago, people could find their way in the outdoors without a compass—at night or during the day, using natural directional signs. Here are some pointers for the next time you are camping, hiking, or just outdoors.

Use the Big Dipper The most accurate and reliable direction finder is right over your head. It's Polaris, the North Star. Polaris is over the North Pole, so if you find it in the night sky, you'll know where north is.

Here's how to find the North Star: •Find the Big Dipper.

•Then, find the two stars at the outer edge of the Dipper's bowl.

These are pointer stars. They "point" to the North Star.

•Extend an imaginary line from the pointer stars across the sky to the next bright star.

•Stretch your arm out full length and spread your fingers, and the North Star should be about as far away as your thumb is from your middle finger.

Use Two Sticks in a Field On a cloudless night, drive a stick into the ground until the tip of it is at your eye level. Behind it, plant a taller stick such that the tips of the sticks line up on a bright star, as you look at them. After a few minutes, the star will appear to have moved (but remember: stars don't move; it's Earth that's rotating). If the star seems to move . . .•up, you are facing east. •down, you are facing west.

Use a Wristwatch To find your direction during the day, place an analog wristwatch (one with hands) on a level surface.

The Missing Watch

There once was a farmer who discovered that he had lost his watch in the barn. It was no ordinary watch because it had sentimental value for him.

After searching high and low among the hay for a long while; he gave up and enlisted the help of a group of children playing outside the barn.

He promised them that the person who found it would be rewarded.

Hearing this, the children hurried inside the barn, went through and around the entire stack of hay but still could not find the watch. Just when the farmer was about to give up looking for his watch, a little boy went up to him and asked to be given another chance.

The farmer looked at him and thought, “Why not? after all, this kid looks sincere enough.�

So the farmer sent the little boy back in the barn. After a while the little boy came out with the watch in his hand!

The farmer was both happy and surprised and so he asked the boy how he succeeded where the rest had failed.

The boy replied, “I did nothing but sit on the ground and listen. In the silence, I heard the ticking of the watch and just looked in that direction.�

Roses in the path An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck.

One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."

The old woman smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?" "That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them." "For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."

Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

Don’t lie to your doctor!

Fibbing about a few things to your doctor now and then isn’t really that big of a deal, right? More than 40 percent of Americans admitted that they’ve lied to their doctor during a checkup. But a little white lie could turn in big health problems. Omitting information, bending the truth or straight up lying can change how your doctor cares for you and the advice she gives you.

Things to tell your son

1. Play a sport.

It will teach you how to win honorably, lose gracefully, respect authority, work with others, manage your time and stay out of trouble. And maybe even throw or catch.

2. You will set the tone for the sexual relationship, so don't take something away from her that you can't give back.

3. Use careful aim when you pee. Somebody's got to clean that up, you know.

4. Save money when you're young because you're going to need it someday.

5. Allow me to introduce you to the dishwasher, oven, washing machine, iron, vacuum, mop and broom. Now please go use them.

6. Pray and be a spiritual leader.

7. Don't ever be a bully and don't ever start a fight, but if some idiot clocks you, please defend yourself.

8. Your knowledge and education is something that nobody can take away from you.

9. Treat women kindly. Forever is a long time to live alone and it's even longer to live with somebody who hates your guts.

10. Take pride in your appearance.

Silver Angels Sends a Special Veterans Day Salute Frances Shelton joined the Army in 1950 at the age of 19 during the Korean War. Now, she resides in Kingston and has Silver Angels help provide her housekeeping assistance.

She completed her basic training at Fort Dix, just south of Trenton New Jersey. From there, she worked on the nursing unit at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

It was during this time, she met and married her husband, Jack. They were together for 35 years and had four children – three who followed in their footsteps by also enrolling in the military.

“Serving our country was a great career for me. I really enjoyed being on the go and getting to travel to see so many new things,” said Shelton. “I encourage young ladies to explore it as a career possibility because it was a great way to get to see and do so many different things.”

Silver Angels of Roane, a non-clinical home care company that also provides Personal Care, Personal Emergency Response Systems and Home Delivered Meals, visits Shelton to assist her with routine housekeeping.

Growing Up In Harriman (1930-1945) Part XI - Grandpa’s Farm

Walking up to Grandpa Semanick’s farm on Oakdale Mountain was also a delightful adventure. It was only 1 1/ 2 miles away from my house, but as I look back it seemed like several miles due to my short legs. When blueberries were in season I had a favorite place to stop and pick those large, juicy delicious berries. It was near what we called “Balance Rock” back then. This large round looking rock was balanced on top of another flat large rock and was near the high tension power lines just outside of Harriman up old federal Highway 27. Still further up the highway was a small spring of water coming out the side of a hill near dead man’s curve. I would always stop and scoop small handfuls of this delicious cool water. So you see every trip to grandpa’s was worth the time and energy.

There was a spring flowing near the barn and that was another stop once I arrived. The slow flowing spring had two or three salamanders as well as crayfish (crawdads as I called them) hiding near small sandstone rocks. This spring along a barbed wire fence was grandpa’s property line. I recently learned that Tennessee now has a state law that prevents springs such as this from being damaged or destroyed. He also had a deep well that contained cool sweet water.

The highlight of my visit was to visit the large barn with it’s second level hay loft. The fresh smell of recently harvested hay deeply filled my nostrils. I had a Red Ryder BB gun and each time I visited, my big thrill was setting up corncobs in the barnyard, climbing into the hay loft and shooting the standing cobs.

Grandpa had a one-eyed horse that he would allow me to ride around the fenced-in area around the barn. Of course at my age he was always nearby in the event I had trouble with the horse, even though it was very gentle.

There was a grain storage shed near the house. Inside were huge piles of dried cobs of corn. There was a hand-operated grinder (commonly known as a hand-operated mill) which was used to extract the grains of corn from the cob. Grandpa would allow me to operate the grinder, which was very hard to turn for a kid my age. The grains of corn could be pulverized for cooking and feeding the chickens. Leftover whole grains were kept in storage and used for planting in the spring.

As with most farmers in this area there was always potatoes, asparagus, wheat, corn, an apple tree, cherry tree and three or four strands of vineyard vines. Harvest from all these sustained the family for the coming year. Apples, cherries and grapes were mouth watering and delicious. Grapes were used for making wine. A large partially underground storage unit covered with soil and grass was where potatoes and fresh produce were kept. It was always cool and dry, ideal for long storage.

At the time I didn’t realize why but I would occasionally see grandpa walking between the line of vines and stoop down for a minute or two. As he left the vineyard, he would have a quart size jar in his hand and then immediately take the jar to the house for safekeeping. As I grew older I discovered that the vineyard was his underground hiding area for his home made moonshine, commonly referred to as “white lightning”. Large thin sandstone slabs covered the holes where he kept the Moonshine.

Prior to going to bed I was always reminded to go with his wife to the outside toilet, a two-stool outhouse.

Mary (1925) Once when cousin George, who was my age, visited the farm with his parents from Indiana we both needed to go to the outhouse at the same time. While relieving ourselves a small bull snake decided to give up a visit. We decided we had best get out of there in a hurry.

Often other cousins from Chattanooga would also visit the farm and all us kids would sleep in the attic area. Cousin Bodie, who was much older, would come up and tell us scary stories. None of us got much sleep those nights.

Rockwood Memories

Here are a few interesting things that I found out from researching the Rockwood Times and the year 1956. On April 21, the first Salk Vaccine arrived. Six year old Janis Lee Adkins, a first grade student, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Adkins, 111 Wheeler St. was the first in line. Then 110 students followed. Dr. George Shacklett gave shots on Tuesday, Then Dr. Register, and Dr. Hicks took the next two days. Mr. Darwin Womack said, " No tears, but plenty of getting teeth."

I never had a lot of trouble taking the "shots", the thing that scared me was Dr. Conger. I read the other day where some primitive dental tools were discovered. I bet I know where they found them and who lost them. Upstairs in the bank building on Rockwood Avenue.

I will never forget the waiting room and grown ups were screaming and yelling, moaning, and groaning sounds coming from the dental room. I think he still used a treadle type drill.

Another interesting story, Live and Let Live Drug Store now has air conditioning. George's Pharmacy is considering installing air conditioning. When the new offices of Rockwood Federal Savings and Loan opens up, that will be a total of ten air conditioned establishments in Rockwood.

And talk about "Thunder Road," a total of 180 cases of illegal booze was confiscated in five traffic stops in two weeks.

In April, 1956 Judy Thomas age 12 and a 7th grader won the Rockwood Elementary Spelling Bee. There were twenty-two finalist and Judy won on the word "Contact." Her opponent, Joyce Williams, last year's runner-up failed to spell the word correctly.

And the Senior Play was presented in April 1955, "The Whiz Kids" Performing in the play were Gene Barnard, Jim Barnes, Harold Jones, Brooksie May, Wayne Pugh, Ray Tiller, Barbara Kindred, Jeanie Smith, Betty Jean Head, Nanita Greene, Mary Nelle Evans, Barbara McNelly, and Carole Haga.

Miss Ann Pemberton and Mrs. Frances Hennessee were the directors.

And how about this story from April 1955..."Allen Sheets, owner and operator of a service station and a well-known sportsman, reported seeing strange objects in the sky early Tuesday morning and according to his account, they resembled flying saucers.

Mr. Sheets said he was fishing on the banks of Watts Bar Lake near here about 9 o'clock in the morning when he heard a noise that sounded like "a swarm of bees." He said he looked around to see where the noise was coming from and when he looked toward the sky, he saw five about the size of an automobile tire. They were disc shaped and brownish in color, traveling at a high rate of speed and at an altitude of about 1500 feet. They were not jets. They would make a jet seem like it was standing still. The objects were maneuvering and traveling toward Chattanooga. He said he couldn't say if they were flying saucers, but they were objects that moved at a high rate of speed.

When I originally wrote this article for Rockwood Memories, I received an email from a friend, David Sliger (RHS Class of '54), I would like to share it with the Roane Reader...

This was my first input on your Rockwood Memories, but I wish to take the opportunity on this day of remembrance and dedication to our veterans, both past and present who have given their all for us, many of whom have made the supreme sacrifice so that the rest of us may walk free in our great America.

"In particular, I wish to single out one Rockwoodian who deserves special recognition, that being Mr. Tom Pemberton. As I recall, we students at Rockwood High thought of Tom as a strict disciplinarian and hard corps, and in fact he was. However, it wasn't until I joined the US Marine Corps and served four years that I truly came to appreciate Tom and the great sacrifice he made to our great country. I don't know if many in Rockwood knew that Tom fought with the Marine Corps in the bloody battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 and lost his arm in combat. However that loss in no way deferred Tom from achieving his life's goals and being a sterling citizen and an asset to his country, but also a top-notch educator."

"Having served in my beloved Marine Corps for 4 years, I now know exactly where Tom was coming from with his strong sense of discipline and dedication. I walked up to Tom at our reunion in 2004 and personally thanked him for his sacrifice in W.W.II, not only as a former Marine myself and knowing what he was about, but more so as a caring citizen who believes above all that our country owes a debt to all of the veterans that we can never repay.

"And I would like this letter to be an open invitation to all of those in Rockwood to personally thank Tom Pemberton for all his years of service as an educator, and most of all, for the great sacrifice he made on the sulfur island of Iwo Jima in 1945." GOD REALLY DOES HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR A woman received a call that her daughter was sick.

She stopped by the pharmacy to get medication, got back to her car and found that she had locked her keys inside.

The woman found an old rusty coat hanger left on the ground.

She looked at it and said "I don't know how to use this."

She bowed her head and asked God to send her HELP. Within 5 minutes a beat up old motorcycle pulled up.

A bearded man who was wearing an old biker skull rag.

The man got off of his cycle and asked if he could help.

She said: "Yes, my daughter is sick. I've locked my keys in my car. I must get home. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?"

He said "Sure." He walked over to the car, and in less than a minute the car was open.

She hugged the man and through tears said "Thank You SO Much!

You are a very nice man."

The man replied "Lady, I am NOT a nice man. I just got out of PRISON yesterday, I was in prison for car theft."

The woman hugged the man again sobbing, "Oh, thank you God! You even sent me a Professional!"

Duck Dynasty --- Did You Know...

1. Long before he appeared on the hit A&E series, patriarch Phil Robertson was considered the "Billy Graham of duck hunting." His first public-speaking opportunity came in the early 1990s when he was asked to give a duck-calling seminar at the Superdome in New Orleans before 1,000 people. After talking about duck calls and hunting, Robertson reached into his bag and pulled out his Bible. "Folks, while I'm here," he said, "I think I'm gonna preach you a little sermon." Afterwards, he received other opportunities to speak and preach and was soon booked years in advance to talk to churches and other organizations.

2. In 2012, Duck Dynasty topped Facebook's list of most mentioned television shows. When the show returned this month for season three, the premiere was the most watched show of the night, beating out ratings giants American Idol and Modern Family.

3. All of the members of the Robertson family, as well as series regulars John Godwin and Justin Martin, are active members of the White's Ferry Road Church of Christ. Phil and his oldest son Al (who doesn't appear on the show) serve as church elders.

4 Uncle Si says he always travels with three things: a gallon jug of iced tea, his plastic cup, and his Bible. (He probably also takes his wife. Although the show often gives the impression Si is single, he's married to Christine.

5. Friends and relatives estimate that Phil Robertson has baptized more than 300 people in the river near his home, the Ouachita River.

6. Jase, Willie and Jep actually have a fourth brother, Al. He’s the oldest of the bunch, and may make a special appearance in the upcoming fourth season of the show.

7. Miss Kay’s favorite meal to make is fried frogs, and apparently there are two ways to cook them. Jase recommends soaking them in lemon juice first, and Miss Kay says you can fry them or sauté them in butter to make them extra delicious.

8. Phil Robertson recently ran into his old football friend, Terry Bradshaw, at the airport. When the two men attended Louisiana Tech University, Robertson played first string quarterback ahead of Bradshaw.

9. Contrary to popular belief, the tea Uncle Si always drinks is unsweetened.

10. The “Duck Dynasty” clan appeared in Darius Rucker’s “Wagon Wheel” music video, a remake of the popular Old Crow Medicine Show song.

11. Jase, Willie and Jep’s wives actually do love their husband’s beards, and prefer them to the “preppy look” the men used to have.

12. In addition to his huge truck seen on the show, Willie drives a camouflage BMW. 13. Miss Kay isn’t the only “Miss” of the family. Everyone calls the women of the show by their first names, and adds “Miss” at the beginning. It’s the proper Southern thing to do.

14. The Duck Commander warehouse actually has a store in it. People travel from all over to see the Robertsons, and sometimes hundreds of people are lined up outside at a time. The family claims to know which state is having Spring Break based on all the license plates in the parking lot.

15. Uncle Si’s favorite way to eat dove is with cream cheese, jalapenos and wrapped in bacon, which is probably another Miss Kay specialty.

Mother, Interrupted

There’s nothing easy about amusement Nobody wants to admit it, but parents everywhere appear to be losing their minds. And how could we not? Spending a large amount of time around children, who require constant entertainment and amusement, will definitely take a toll on your sanity.

Not just because being a parent can be stressful, which is a topic for a different day, but because of the bizarre things we’ll do to entertain our kids and keep them happy.

These things might make us seem like we’re suffering from some sort of mental illness, but we’re (probably) not. If I had to call it anything, I’d say it’s “parental illness”: behavior that mimics mental illness, but in reality, is just good parenting.

People say children are easily amused. I disagree. There’s nothing easy about keeping my daughter amused! I have done some things in the name of entertainment that, if Molly wasn’t around, would make me look more than a little crazy.

Now that I think about it, making our cat “talk” by moving his mouth and doing a gravelly, tough-guy voice (we—or, uh, I--like to imagine that he’s involved in organized cat crime) was funny when Molly was there, but creepy when it was just me and the cat.

Rolling myself into a blanket burrito on the living room floor while making sizzling sounds seemed like good parenting when Molly was pretending to cook me, but more closely resembled a warning sign of mental instability when, still sizzling, I noticed she was no longer interested in Burrito Mom and had moved on to other, less weird ways to spend her time.

Good for her.

Doing the potty dance—I’ll have to show you one day—is a fun way to celebrate success after a three year old uses the bathroom, but try it when you’re over 5 and alone in the bathroom, and you’re breaching into the crazy zone. Actually, you may have crossed right over.

If, and only if, a child is present for any of these shenanigans, you’re fine—it’s considered normal parenting behavior. You’re only doing it to entertain your child, after all. But roll yourself into a blanket burrito when you’re home alone, and BAM! You’re insane.

This is why it’s important to bring your child with you everywhere you go.

I try to take comfort in the knowledge that, by doing these things to entertain and amuse my daughter, I’m being a good mom. Even though it might cause others to (rightfully) question my sanity, Molly and I have fun.

Soon, she’ll grow up and be too old, cool, and mature to find her mother’s impression of Daffy Duck hilarious. That’s a great reason to take every opportunity to do it now—sorry, Michael. In any case, I’m certainly glad Molly is around. Raising her gives me a chance to re-live childhood a little, and I can’t lie—I love it.

The “homeless” man It was a cold winter's day that Sunday. The parking lot to the church was filling up quickly. I noticed as I got out of my car that fellow church members were whispering among themselves as they walked to the church.

As I got closer I saw a man leaned up against the wall outside the church. He was almost laying down as if he was asleep. He had on a long trench coat that was almost in shreds and a hat topped his head, pulled down so you could not see his face.

He wore shoes that looked 30 years old, too small for his feet with holes all over them, his toes stuck out.

I assumed this man was homeless, and asleep, so I walked on by through the doors of the church. We all fellowshipped for a few minutes, and someone brought up the man laying outside.

People snickered and gossiped but no one bothered to ask him to come in, including me.

A few moments later church began. We all waited for the Preacher to take his place and to give us the Word, when the doors to the church opened. In came the homeless man walking down the aisle with his head down. People gasped and whispered and made faces.

He made his way down the aisle and up onto the pulpit he took off his hat and coat.

My heart sank.

There stood our preacher...he was the "homeless man." No one said a word. The preacher took his Bible and laid it on the stand.

"Folks, I don't think I have to tell you what I am preaching about today."

Worse than death: Critical illness money fears… People fear the bill collector more than the Grim Reaper.

Among workers ages 40 and 50, nearly half fear the financial consequences of a critical illness— compared with just 29 percent who rate dying as their biggest concern, according to a new study.

That fear of a hit to the wallet being a bigger concern than dying is most pronounced among single workers, single women and single parents, according to A Sun Life Financial survey, "Well-Placed Fears: Workers' Perceptions of a Critical Illness."

For example, single women in that 40-50 age group who earn less than $50,000 are four times more concerned about the financial fallout of a critical illness than they are worried about being killed by it, the report found.

For millions of workers, getting sick doesn't pay and most single parents and single women ages 22 to 39 in that income bracket are more worried about paying the bills from those illnesses than dying from them.

Despite those stark money-related fears, the overwhelming majority of American workers are going without insurance coverage that would specifically pay bills from a critical illness.

Thirty-six percent of the workers who responded to the survey believe they have critical illness coverage—but less than 5 percent of all workers are estimated to actually carry such coverage.

"Our findings suggest that benefits brokers and [human resources] decision-makers might especially want to consider offering critical illness and cancer insurance if their employee base contains a significant group of women, workers age 40 to 50 or singles," said Kimberly Ezell of Robert James & Associates, Inc. Hard choices for self-employed caught in Obama Care gaps!

Ezell's singling out of cancer stemmed from another major finding of the survey, which polled more than 4,100 full-time workers and was conducted by Kelton Research. Nearly half of all workers polled—48 percent—were most worried about falling victim to an invasive cancer. Heart attack was the top concern for 32 percent, and stroke for 15 percent.

Of the 285 survey respondents who had suffered a critical illness, two-thirds had to take special measures to cover related costs. A total of 28 percent tapped their retirement savings and other funds earmarked for future needs, 28 percent dipped into emergency funds and 21 percent borrowed money from family or friends. Twelve percent declared bankruptcy and 11 percent either sold their homes or had them foreclosed upon.

Ezell, said that the research "underscores that even if you have robust health coverage, a significant health condition such as cancer, heart attack or stroke can divert a significant chunk of money from your savings, or, in some cases, cost you your home. Ezell also said that based on the study's results, "we think many workers will want to explore ways to increase their financial security in case they experience a critical illness."

New on the scene are some modern policies that offer Accelerated Benefit Riders for Terminal Illness, Chronic Illness and Critical Illness. The Accelerated Benefit Riders are one more building block in creating a secure financial future for you and your family. A critical illness policy would provide a flat sum of extra money available to a person suffering from a critical illness, and not be just a percentage of a person's lost wages, such as disability insurance. Roane County’s History Coal and timber formed the early economic base of the community first called Winter's Gap and, later, Oliver Springs. The community attained national prominence thanks to a natural mineral springs, the water from which was alleged to have healing properties.

Richard Oliver, the first postmaster and the man for whom the town was named, first commercialized the springs by transporting guests from his inn to the springs by horse and buggy. In 1894, the Richards family built a four-story hotel boasting its own electric and water plants, nearly 200 rooms, an Italian orchestra, a dance pavilion, elevators, a billiard room, wine cellars, bowling alleys, and tennis courts. The magnificent hotel attracted guests from all across the United States. But it burned in 1905, ending forever the resort era of Oliver Springs.

In the meantime, Harriman was prospering and Rockwood was moving to a more diversified economic base with the establishment of several new manufacturing industries just after the turn of the century. These included the Rockwood Hosiery Mill and the Rockwood Stove Works. The early 1900s also brought the peach industry. By the 1920s, Kingston was the "Peach Capital of the United States." Peaches from thousands of trees on dozens of farms were shipped across the country.

Places to see for free in Tennessee Ozone Falls is situated along Fall Creek, which drains a short section of the Cumberland Plateau between the Crab Orchard Mountains to the west and Walden Ridge to the east. The creek flows down from its source high in the Crab Orchard Mountains for a mile or so before steadying briefly as it enters the community of Ozone. Fall Creek enters the state natural area just after it passes under U.S. Route 70, which runs perpendicular to it. The creek spills over Ozone Falls a few hundred meters south of US-70.

Beyond Ozone Falls, Fall Creek slices through a small gorge and proceeds southward for several more miles before emptying into Piney Creek. The confluence of Piney and Fall Creek occurs at a point where Roane County, Cumberland County, and Rhea County all meet. Fall Creek is part of the Tennessee River watershed.

The Fall Creek that spills over Ozone Falls is not the same stream as the Fall Creek that spills over Fall Creek Falls in Van Buren County. The latter stream is part of the Cumberland River watershed.

The Ozone Falls State Natural Area consists of Ozone Falls and the gorge immediately downstream. The gorge area around the waterfall's plungepool slopes inward from the top edge, creating a half-dome shape along the gorge's walls. Short hiking trails allow access to the waterfall's overhang and plungepool, as well as the cliffs above the gorge. The trailhead is located along US-70.

Migrants crossing the Cumberland Plateau en route to the Nashville area in the early 19th century wrote of Ozone Falls in journals and letters sent to relatives back home. The waterfall was located adjacent to the Walton Road, which was part of the stage route connecting East and Middle Tennessee (the road closely paralleled what is now US-70). One traveler along this road, Elijah Haley, died while passing through the area in 1806. His widow established a tavern at what is now the community of Ozone shortly thereafter, and later helped operate the Crab Orchard Inn at Crab Orchard, a few miles to the west.

The waterfall was known as McNair Falls throughout the 19th century, named after a local miller who operated a grist mill at the waterfall in the 1860s. In 1896, the community of Mammy, which had grown up around the Haley tavern, changed its name to "Ozone", and the name was subsequently applied to the waterfall.

October 18, 1965 – Tragedy at UT Not much was expected of Tennessee when the 1965 season began. It was the second year for head coach Doug Dickey. In his first season, the Vols went 4-5-1. Tennessee had not had more than six wins in a season since 1957, and they were picked to finish ninth in the 10-team SEC at the start of the season.

Tennessee started the season alright. They thumped Army 21-0, tied Auburn, and beat South Carolina. So Tennessee was 2-0-1 as the the third Saturday in October rolled around and the Vols headed down to Birmingham to meet eventual national champions Alabama, who had blown out the Vols the previous four seasons.

The game itself was a war. The Tide ran the ball all over Tennessee, but the Vols defense only allowed the Red Elephants into the end zone once. The game was tied 7-7 with less than ten seconds to go, when one of the weirdest plays in this storied rivalry occurred.

A young sophomore quarterback named Ken Stabler had replaced injured Tide QB Steve Sloan three snaps earlier and had just scrambled 14 yards on 3rd-and-long to pick up a first down—or so he thought.

With the clock winding down and Tide kicker David Ray sprinting on the field to try for a winning field goal, Stabler took the snap and quickly threw the ball out of bounds. Unfortunately for Stabler, it was fourth down. Yes, "The Snake" got the clock stopped, but he was all out of downs and the game ended a 7-7 tie.

It is a play that would be shown repeatedly on ESPN had it happened more recently.

Today it is more of a footnote in football history and not really talked about as one of the biggest faux pas in college football.

Tennessee was ecstatic following the game, and were ready to take on Houston the next week when tragedy struck.

The Monday following the game, Tennessee assistant coaches, Bob Jones, Bill Majors (brother of Johnny Majors), and Charles Rash were carpooling to work, when their car was broadsided by a train in West Knoxville.

Immediately, Jones and Majors were killed, while Rash was able to hang on until the week's end before dying.

News of the crash spread quickly through Knoxville. Tennessee President Andy Holt and Head Coach Doug Dickey, along with other coaches had the somber job of telling the three wives what happened, and telling the combined seven young boys that their dads were not coming home.

In less than 48 hours, the Tennessee family had gone from the euphoria of the tie with Alabama, to the pit of despair after losing three coaches. However, the players voted to continue the season.

Outfitted with black crosses over the orange "T" on their helmets, the Vols played Houston that Saturday and beat them 17-8 in a game where any win would be just fine.

The next week Tennessee upset seventh-ranked Georgia Tech 21-7, but then the following week lost to Ole Miss in Memphis and lost their starting quarterback Charlie Fulton, which gave way for the debut of Dewey "Swamp Rat" Warren under center.

Tennessee finished the SEC schedule beating Kentucky and Vanderbilt easily, but still had one game left on the regular season schedule, a date with fourth-ranked UCLA in Memphis at Liberty Bowl stadium.

The Bruins were led by future Heisman Trophy winner Gary Beban, running back Mel Farr, and coached by Memphis native Tommy Prothro.

Tennessee was headed to the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston, and the Bruins had a Rose Bowl date waiting. It was dubbed the "Rosebonnet Bowl" by Tennessee radio announcer George Mooney. It turned out to be better than any bowl game.

Tennessee fumbled the kickoff and UCLA took advantage and scored eight plays later. Tennessee did not fold as Warren rallied the Vols to take a 20-7 lead at halftime.

The two teams traded the lead in the second half and then the Bruins got a late score to take the lead 34-29.

Warren then led Tennessee down the field, throwing key passes to Johnny Mills to get Tennessee down to the one yard line.

On 4th-and-goal, Warren took the snap on a pass play, saw that no one was open and decided to take matters into his own hands. Warren ran left, and with much determination squeezed the ball across the goal line for the go-ahead score.

Warren's teammates were terrified when they saw him try to run it in. Knowing he was slow, they thought it may take him about 15 minutes to get to the goal line.

Tennessee then got a two-point conversion to make the score 37-34. However, the Vols still had to kick off and give the Bruins one last shot.

UCLA got to midfield and Beban heaved one last pass that was intercepted by Tennessee's Bob Patrella. Here it got ugly as Patrella, caught up in the moment did not hear the final gun go off and started running the ball back. He happened to be running down the wrong side of the field, and UCLA player Paul Horgan stormed off the UCLA bench and sucker-punched Patrella. He was knocked cold, and had several lacerations that required twelve stitches.

The Bruins' behavior got even worse. Prothro spent his time complaining about poor officiating and clock management. He stated after the contest, "For the first time in my life, I am ashamed to be a Southerner."
