Can going to the hospital make you sicker?

An estimated 100,000 patients die each year from bugs caught in the hospital.

Going to the hospital can be a serious health hazard.

Each year, an estimated 1.7 million U.S. patients, two-thirds of them on Medicare, catch a bug while being treated for something else. According to federal agencies, nearly 100,000 patients die annually from what are formally called "healthcare-associated infections," or HAIs. A deadly meningitis outbreak linked to contaminated steroid injections is only the most recent, major example of infections that a 2011 report from GE Healthcare found kill more Americans than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined, and cost our health care system $35 billion annually, or $1,100 per admission.

Already, officials have announced a 40 percent improvement in what are known as central line-associated bloodstream infections caused by germs that get into the body when tubes are inserted into large veins.

"No patient should ever become sicker as a result of the care he or she receives," said Dr. Carolyn M. Clancy. "Until recently, these infections were thought to be an unfortunate consequence of care. Our work demonstrates definitively that they are not."

I have seen a cowboy mount a wild bronco and ride him to a standstill. The bronco would buck, kick, paw, and snort as he tried to throw the rider.

Risking life and limb to break a bronco requires great courage--but that is not the most courageous thing a man can do. If the cowboy makes the ride, he has only conquered an animal.

I have seen fighters in a boxing ring pit their skills against another fighter. The punishment a fighter receives sometimes is unmerciful. His flesh might be bruised and his body bleeding, but he ignores the pain and fights on. One might think that this is a supreme act of courage, but it is not. The victor has only conquered another man.

I have seen a man come before the church with head bowed low and tears of repentance flowing from his eyes. He had been cut to the heart by God's Word. He had been made to know the misery and consequence of sin.

He utters a painful and humbling statement, "I have sinned." He seeks forgiveness from God and man. It is in this scene that one witnesses the supreme act of courage, for such a man has conquered...himself. ~~Jimmy Jividen

The Railroad Tracks Running through the middle of Emory Gap are several train tracks.

The same tracks that provided the rails for the trains that ran through there when I was a kid.

Our house was so close to the tracks that everytime a train came through, which was several times a day, our windows shook. We got used to the noise, and never paid attention to it.

One day, my cousin Eddie Lemons ran into our house and excitedly said there was a black man working on the tracks and he was deaf.

He added that he had been talking to the man by hand language.

Now, back then, us kids didn't have many toys to play with, so this was a chance for an adventure!

We ran through our small backyard, crawled under the fence and slid down the clay dirt bank to the tracks.

Eddie was right, there was a black man pounding on the spikes of the rails with a big hammer. It was a very hot day and I remember seeing sweat running down his face.

We performed our hand language which consisted of pointing up to the sun and then wiping our brow.

The man responded by pointing up to the sun and wiping his brow, then smiling and nodding yes.

We scimmered back up the bank, ran home and filled a glass with ice and water, then we carefully ran back and got his attention again.

We did our "hot weather" hand language to him again and handed him the glass of water.

He smiled big, and drank every drop of it.

He went back to hammering, but everytime he looked up at us, we would point to the sun, and wipe our brows. He always responded with the same sign, shook his head yes, and smiled at us.

We sat for several hours and watched him work.

We never saw the deaf man again after that day, although everyday for weeks we hurried down the bank and looked up and down the tracks for him.

We never knew his name, or anything about him, but in our eyes, we were heroes, and he made two small kids feel important by not running us off, but by thanking us with a big smile.

When most of us were small, we played playhouse, but me, my sister Sandra, and brother Jerry used to play newspaper. Of course, Jerry was the editor, because he was the male, and females weren't editors back then. Me and Sandra were the reporters.

Later, Mary & Jim Ferguson started the Roane County Times and I was lucky enough to work for them. Cassie Chancey, Patsy Earl and some others took great pride in our work there. Sandra volunteered to write racing news in it.

They later sold it to The Standard. Jerry worked for them, until the publisher laid it aside.

After the Roane County Times was sold, me and Cassie worked for the Standard a couple of weeks parttime, and Sandra submitted her racing news to them. I guess we weren’t professional enough to be fulltime. Anyways, he agreed to lay us off, which enabled us to draw our unemployment for almost a year. This enabled us to develop The Roane Review.

We and some others all worked free, except for commission on a few ads, but we did it because we loved it. Bittereness set in between some of us and we decided to end The Roane Review. We split all the assets, which was about $200 each.

Before we split, I had already decided to create The Roane Reader. Me and Sandra talked it over and decided we could do it.

Of course, it didn’t take long before Sandra took the lead. She sold most of the ads, retyped most of the submitted items, took care of the books, the accounting, and worked into the night many, many times.

We went from 3,000 issues to 10,000. We did all our own research, typing, selling and composing the ads, and delivering the papers.

For 18 1/2 years, me and Sandra did all this for no pay. We did get some commission off the ads we sold, but we weren’t in it for the money, we were in it because we loved doing it.

In all these years, we have not had an increase in our ad prices, something I guess no other business can boast about.

After 17 years, Sandra discovered she had cancer, but she continued to bury herself in the paper.

She would sit and moan in pain while trying to finish an article to meet the deadline to take it to the Crossville Chronicle the next morning for printing.

No one will ever understand how much she loved The Roane Reader. She wanted one of her sons to take the paper over when she could no longer work on it, but he was afraid

he couldn’t do it.

In April 20, 2011, she hurt so bad, that I told her that issue needed to be our last..

She flatly refused to quit, and set me straight by informing me of how much our advertisers depended on us.

In May, she was so sick she couldn’t get up off the couch. Me and her daughterin-law Tracy worked until 3 a.m. to find filler to finish that issue. We had to help her to bed because her legs had went too numb for her to walk. I stayed the night there and slept on the couch because I had to have the paper at Crossville at 8:00 that morning. I remember I was so tired.

After that night, I don’t think she ever got up again on her own.

On June 2nd, Sandra passed away, and so did The Roane Reader.

It remained dead for six months, but then one night, I was sitting on my front deck, thinking of Sandra and crying because I missed her so much--when it hit me. Me and Justin could do it--we could start the paper up again. I would do most of the typing, and he would do all the technical stuff. I called him, and he was all for it. Thus reviving the Roane Reader.

Justin has taken over his Mother’s part, and does a tremendous job. He is still teaching me all the computer in and out, and he works almost as hard as his Mama did on it. I know she is so proud of him for continuing The Roane Reader.

Our advertisers are making it possible for the Roane Reader to remain in business for 20 years. Some have been with us almost from the start. They are Logs to Lumber, B&M Wrecker, J&B Furniture, Hilltop Pawn, and Sexton’s Automotive Group. Many others have supported us every month for years and years, and we appreciate it so much.

We love making the Roane Reader available for your enjoyment every month, and like I said, we are not in it for the money, we are in it because it’s from our hearts--mine, Sandra’s and Justin’s.

Rockwood Memories By: Ray Collet

There are hundreds of people in the Rockwood area that will remember the highly successful Trade Day event, sponsored by our local downtown merchants and which was a monthly promotion here for many years.

As the name implies, the First Monday Trade Day was held on the first Monday of each month and on that day merchants would go "all out" in offering special values and bargains for the shoppers from near and far who would flock to town on that day. Also restaurants would have special low priced items on the menus, the service stations would offer special prices for oil changes, lube jobs, ets. and the theater would have an outstanding feature film with reduced matinee prices.

The attraction that brought the largest number of people to town occurred about 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon when some ten cash awards were given to lucky shoppers whose name was drawn from a large circular container. With each dollar traded with a cooperating merchant during the month, a customer was given a coupon upon which they wrote their name and address and placed it in a secure box at the store. There were all emptied into the large container covered with wire mesh and turned with a handle so that all coupons would be thoroughly mixed. Many hundreds would gather on Rockwood Street as near the bank parking lot as possible where the drawings were held. It became necessary to block off the street from traffic and have loud speaker hookups to announce names on winning coupons drawn. The lucky winner had to be present in order to get the cash award, thus tremendous crowds were on hand.

Coupons would continue to be drawn and names called until a winner was present for all the lesser $5.00 to $50.00 awards, but if the grand prize ($100.00) winner was not present, no further coupon was drawn and that amount was added to the next month's grand prize. You can imagine the excitement and anticipation that developed each "First Monday" as the grand award reached several hundred dollars.

L.J. (Luke) Hinds, who had a clothing store in Rockwood, came up with the original suggestion for the First Monday Trade Day. He got the idea from a similar promotion held in Lewisburg when he was manager of the J.C.Penny Store there. Others who were original promoters of the event and who supported it strongly through many years included, Maurice Greif (Bernard's), Lee Bilbrey (Bilbrey's), Ed Gibson,( Thomas-Hill's) Al Burnham and D.W.McKay (Penny's) and at first, practically all other merchants in the downtown area.

The week prior to each First Monday, The Rockwood Times published a special section containing advertising and publicity of the event and in addition, mailed the section, usually a 4-page circular to thousands of box holders in the Rockwood, Spring City, Kingston and Harriman area. For many years, the Rockwood Times also conducted the drawings downtown which was the big feature of the day.

Many clubs, organizations, or church groups would take advantage of the crowds coming to town on Trade Day to conduct bake sales, sell tickets, ets. In the fall season, the Civitan Club sold hundreds of pounds of the famous Claxton Fruit Cakes, which is still a major fund raising project for organizations nationwide.

Those who really "made hay" at the Trade Day events were the politicians and office seekers during the summer and fall in election years. My, how they would take advantage of the huge crowds by shaking hands, kissing babies, making promises, pointing with pride and viewing with alarm! Their election, it seems, would solve all of our Country's ills, from city hall to the court house, and on to the state house and beyond. However no political speeches or announcements were allowed during the time of the awards drawings, and most merchants kept very neutral as partisan politics were concerned.

The Rockwood First Monday Trade Day event continued for more than a decade, mainly through the fifties and early sixties. Decreasing participation by local merchants led to its demise as well as the burden placed on the very few leaders who did the work to keep the event going. But during the years it flourished, the trade day event was an outstanding promotion. It gave Rockwood the leadership among the area towns as "the place to go", to trade and created the image of friendly, progressive, civic minded merchants.

Wouldn't it be nice to see those days again with the sidewalks bustling with activity ?

These are actual recipes/directions from kids

First you go to Smith's down the street and buy a big turkey. Take it home and rip off the plastic and pull all that yucky stuff out of the middle of it. I think you are supposed to put something inside of the turkey, but I'm not sure what it's called. Turn the oven on to hot.

It's 100 degrees hot. Make sure you check the oven a lot because my mom burned one last year. When it's done it will be brown and you can take it out to eat. Put salt and pepper on it. I do like turkey on Thanksgiving Day, but I like chocolate pie better."

You get a turkey from the Farmer’s Market. Ask the farmer to kill it for you. They are really nice and will take off the feathers too. They can shave off the feathers.

Go to a store and buy a turkey. Not T.J. Max because they only have shirts. Go to the grocery store and ask the meat person to cut off the wings. You need about 60 pounds of turkey. I think about 8 pounds is what my mom buys.

We buy a small turkey, about 100 pounds. We put spice and pepper all over so it is really hot. Then we add sugar. You can put candy in the middle. That’s the stuffing.

The turkey is all wrapped up when you buy it and you have to cut the paper off. It will have a hole in the middle for stuffing. Just take a big handful of fluffy stuff and put in the turkey. • You have to wrap it all up with string.

I’ve never seen my mom cook a turkey but I saw a turkey at the farm and they can really peck you! We always go out for turkey.

Just come to my house and ask my mom. I used to have a turkey and we have a special tool to squirt the juice in and it is called a chicken squirter. It’s like that thing in the science room.

Call my grandma. She cooks all the turkeys. She is the only one that knows how. She can tell you. She’s really nice.

Cook it in a really hot oven about 50 degrees for 10 hours. Or for medium cook it for 2 hours. If you know how to cook a chicken, you can cook a turkey. They are really big chickens. My mother got a cooking book and if you call her, she can tell you how to do it.

She already knows how to read.

Somewhere down the road You’re going to have to think about it We all face it, but most of us avoid thinking about our final preparations.

Where is it at in the Bible?

In Observance of Thanksgiving, we ask, "Is gluttony a sin?

What does the Bible say about overeating?"

Answer: Gluttony seems to be a sin that Christians like to ignore. We are often quick to label smoking and drinking as sins, but for some reason gluttony is accepted or at least tolerated. Many of the arguments used against smoking and drinking, such as health and addiction, apply equally to overeating. Many believers would not even consider having a glass of wine or smoking a cigarette but have no qualms about gorging themselves at the dinner table. This should not be!

Proverbs 23:20-21 warns us, “Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.”

Proverbs 28:7 declares, “He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.”

Proverbs 23:2 proclaims, “Put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.”

Physical appetites are an analogy of our ability to control ourselves. If we are unable to control our eating habits, we are probably also unable to control other habits, such as those of the mind (lust, covetousness, anger) and unable to keep our mouths from gossip or strife. We are not to let our appetites control us, but we are to have control over our appetites. (See Deuteronomy 21:20, Proverbs 23:2, 2 Peter 1:5-7, 2 Timothy 3:1-9, and 2 Corinthians 10:5.) The ability to say “no” to anything in excess—self-control—is one of the fruits of the Spirit common to all believers (Galatians 5:22).

God has blessed us by filling the earth with foods that are delicious, nutritious, and pleasurable. We should honor God's creation by enjoying these foods and by eating them in appropriate quantities. God calls us to control our appetites, rather than allowing them to control us.

Parents who want to train their child in the way they should go should go that way themselves.

Our Veterans All wars have an underlying reason, real or imagined...A CAUSE! In our time, the two greatest opposing causes are Freedom and bondage.

America has always fought and died for freedom, even the freedom of other nations. The Bible records wars throughout time. In 1 Sam. 17, Israel is defied by Goliath and his army. No one is standing up against him, including Saul and his armies.

A young man named David sees the problem, knows the power of God and challenges those around with the question: "Is there not a cause?"

For that he is ridiculed. He gives defense and finally stands before the giant with 5 smooth stones and the power of God. He prevails and the war is won. For those of us who are Christian, there is a cause. We must stand for the things of God in these last days. For us as Americans, there is a cause. We must stand with and for those who are freedom loving people. There are three basic causes that we cannot ignore.

1. The cause of Freedom. Had it not been for those who have fought in our wars, we would not be a free people today. Freedom is not a luxury bought with money. It is a blessing bought with blood.

2. The cause of Family. The fact that you can move about freely and make choices concerning family is owed to those who paid with their blood. You and I have freedom of choice when it comes to where we live, where we work, where we worship and how we raise our families. This is a basic freedom of our free society that is not found in all the world.

3. The cause of the Future. The battles we are not willing to fight today will determine the blessings or lack thereof we have in the future. Will your children live in a free land? Will they be forced to submit to totalitarian rule? While we cannot be the protector and overseer of the world, it is now apparent that we have a vested interest in the freedoms of other nations.

 Fill your crock pot with soapy water and cook on high for an hour. Rinse with a tablespoon of vinegar mixed into the final rinse water.  Soak trays in vinegar to remove hard water build-up.  Drop an Alka-Seltzer in your toilet bowl; the fizzing action acts as a scrubber. Swish with toilet brush and flush.  A few ice cubes, some salt and a cut up lemon run through your garbage disposal will eliminate odors and clean away gunk.  Add a dash of vinegar to your dishwater for easy grease removal.  Drop a lemon slice into a bowl filled with water and bring it to a boil in the microwave. Allow steam to form, then open microwave and wipe the inside with a damp cloth.  Boil Coca-Cola in the pan to loosen baked-on food in even the messiest pots and pans.  Wash stemware by hand, then dip in a sink full of hot rinse water that has a tablespoon of vinegar added to it. Dry with a clean, soft cloth.  Fill your glass coffee maker pot with Coca-Cola and let sit overnight, then wash. As an alternative, run plain water with a tablespoon of vinegar through the coffee-making cycle, then run another pot of plain water through.  Wine Stains on Carpet: Blot as necessary, then cover stain in table salt to soak up remainder of wine.  Easy Brass Tarnish Remover: Soak brass articles in cherry Kool-Aid for 10 minutes, then rinse and wipe dry.  Clutter Control: Carry a clothes basket through the house and spend two to five minutes in each room picking up anything that doesn’t belong there. Then put those things where they belong. Better yet, get one of your housemates to do it!

Penny Pinchers  Try not to peek at what’s cooking.

Every time you open a heated stove, it’s forced to work harder to restore its set temperature.  Plan your fridge forays. Don’t open the door multiple times to retrieve multiple items. Instead, remove what you need for any given task at the same time.  Use the right burner for the right pot. A small pot on a large burner is a waste of energy. A large pot on a small burner takes longer to heat food to the appropriate temperature.  Rethink the freezer setting. If your ice cream is rock hard, the temperature is probably set too low, using unnecessary energy to freeze food.  Use an energy-efficient small appliance like a toaster oven or crock pot when possible, rather than heating up the whole stove.  Only preheat when the recipe calls for it. Time the preheating so you are ready to put the food in when the oven is ready.  Water will boil faster if you put a lid on the pan.  A self-cleaning oven will consume less energy if you start the cleaning process immediately after cooking something.

The oven temperature will be that much closer to the high heat it must achieve to clean itself.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes HATTIE SHILLINGS

Southern Pork Tenderloin 2 cups panko bread crumbs 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 tablespoon parsley flakes 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 cup olive oil 1 pound pork tenderloin, cut crosswise into 1/2-inch thick slices Stir panko bread crumbs, parsley flakes, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper together in a bowl. Dip tenderloin slices in the crumb mixture to coat both sides. Heat olive oil over medium-high heat in a skillet and fry the pork until the crumb coating is browned and the pork is no longer pink inside, 2 to 3 minutes per side. An instant-read meat thermometer inserted into the center of the pork should read at least 145 degrees.

Apple Cole Slaw 3 cups chopped cabbage 1 unpeeled red apple, cored and chopped 1 unpeeled Granny Smith apple, cored and chopped 1carrot, grated

1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper 2 green onions, finely chopped 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/3 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice

In a large bowl, combine cabbage, red apple, green apple, carrot, red bell pepper, and green onions. In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, brown sugar, and lemon juice. Pour dressing over salad.

The Best Caramel Apples 8 large tart apples 8 wooden chopsticks for handles 1 cup butter 2 cups packed brown sugar

1 cuplight corn syrup 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Bring a large saucepan of water to a boil. Dip apples in boiling water for a few seconds, then dry with paper towels to remove any wax from the peels. Set apples aside; when completely cool, insert a wooden chopstick firmly into the bottom of each apple for a handle.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Stir butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and sweetened condensed milk together in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, and reduce heat to medium. Cook until a candy thermometer reads 248 degrees, 25 to 30 minutes; stir constantly to prevent burning. A teaspoon of the syrup, dropped in a glass of cold water, should form a firm ball. Remove caramel from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

Working quickly, dip each apple into the hot caramel to completely coat the apple and about 1/2 inch of the wooden handle. Sprinkle apples with any desired toppings while still hot. Let caramel apples cool on the parchment paper. Use caution, caramel is very hot.

Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare.

Some say seeing is believing; some say beauty is in the eye of the beholder; and some say people see what they want to see...

I entered the pavilion tent at Glander's gas station, and here's what I saw: A sheen on the tarmac. It was maybe three feet-by-three feet; irregular in shape.

People filed by the sheen and took a quick glance at it. Glander was there to hurry the people along.

They were filed into the tent and filed out.

I got a few seconds' look at the sheen. I can't say for sure that I saw anything in it, but other people seemed to see something.

There were a number of people who were exclaiming and oohing and aahing. One woman tried to throw herself onto the sheen; another woman threw what looked like a housekey; and still another woman threw a bra and a pair of panties at the sheen.

A couple of men had fainted. A young man stood with his arms folded swaying back and forth and intoning: Michael Jackson was my daddy--there's a whole lot of Michael in me--Michael Jackson was my daddy..." on and on.

I don't know how much Glander made from the deal, but I'd say it was a tidy sum. He was charging five bucks a wack for people to go into the tent, and there must have been hundreds of people who went in on that one day. And it went on for a few weeks--every day.

It was strange, because although a lot of people claimed they saw Michael Jackson's face in the sheen, a lot of other people claimed they saw John Wayne or Marylin Monroe or Hank Williams or John Kennedy. One woman swore she saw the face of her long-dead poodle, and one man claimed he saw the face of the Devil.

As I said, the Miracle at Glander's went on for a few weeks; but then something happened to end it.

And that was the fact that the sheen faded. Some might say it dried up or evaporated. It got to the point where there was simply nothing to be seen there--except the tarmac.

People gradually stopped coming, and Glander finally took the pavilion tent down.

I asked him point-blank if he had seen anything in the sheen. He just kind of shrugged and gave me a little grin and said: "There's more things in Heaven and Earth, Sour, than are day-dreamed of in your ful-sophy."

Glander pursed his lips, nodded his head and shifted the quid in his mouth. "Yap, 'ere's some things 'at just can't be explained...and you can take 'at to the bank," Glander grinned and winked.

When you stop in the median with cars flying by, you cannot accelerate fast enough to merge in therefore holding everybody up. By waiting patiently on traffic to clear you can gain enough speed pulling out of the gas station you can merge right into traffic with out blocking both lanes from turning left. In front of Weigles on Gallaher Rd is a great example.  A grocery store having a Halloween Costume Contest for kids from 6-8, but when a child arrived at 7:25, all the kids were finished and gone, with the manager apologizing to a brokenhearted little boy, who was so excited to show off his costume and see the other kids dressed up.

Be effortlessly scary on Halloween By: Debra Carpenter

I’ve always loved this spooky time of year myself. When I was growing up, my mom never failed to decorate our house for holidays. She had boxes of decorations in our shed, sometimes 10 or 12 for one holiday theme! I will never forget the excitement of coming home from school to see our house had been transformed into a creepy crypt or spooky dungeon. As a child, it seemed like magic—when I left for school, our house was clean and bright, and by the time I got home, it was cobwebbed, pumpkin-ed, and full of skeletons (even in the closet).

Now that I have a family of my own, I realize that magic wasn’t what put up all those fun decorations. My dear mother was, and now that I’m the mom, it’s up to me to carry on the tradition. However, as most generations do, I try to find easier ways to do the things my mother did for our family. Being the creative, resourceful person I am, I have come up with some ideas to make myself and my home scary and Halloweenready without so much as lifting a finger.

• Beginning a few months before Halloween (I usually start in April), stop cleaning cobwebs. By the time October rolls around, the cobwebs will be taking over every corner and make your home look super-spooky.

• Don’t brush your hair for a few days before Halloween. Wear a black dress. When trick-or-treaters come to your door, your frizzy tangled mess of hair will make you appear to be a witch (or a homeless person). For added effect, carry a broom. When the trick-or-treaters are gone, you can start cleaning those cobwebs.

• Start putting cat food outside the day before Halloween to lure neighborhood kitties to your house. You might get lucky and entice a few black cats to visit. Hopefully they’ll hang around while the trick-or-treaters are out, making your house look very scary. It might also end up making you look an animal hoarder, but that’s just as scary anyway.

• Eat some beets before the kids come knocking on your door. It’ll look like your teeth are covered in blood. If you can, mash some up with your hands as well. Now, you’ll look like an ax murderer. But be forewarned: you may upset small children and incur the wrath of their mothers. Now that’s scary.

• Let your toddler give you a makeover before handing out candy or taking them trick-or-treating. This is sure to look absolutely terrifying.

• Save the bones from rotisserie chickens and scatter them in your front yard. Be prepared with an alibi in case police come around with questions.

Although these tips and tricks will make your house scary, you probably don’t want to forever be known as the scary man-eating witch/crazy cat lady with real bones in her yard. But keep in mind, Halloween is the only time of the year it’s acceptable to scare people (and children). You may as well take advantage of this--even if it’s just by telling your husband you’re expecting again. Terrifyingly yours, Debra

A meteoroid is a small rock or particle of debris in our solar system. They range in size from dust to around 10 metres in diameter (larger objects are usually referred to as asteroids).

A meteoroid that burns up as it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere is known as a meteor. If you’ve ever looked up at the sky at night and seen a streak of light or ‘shooting star’ what you are actually seeing is a meteor.

A meteoroid that survives falling through the Earth’s atmosphere and colliding with the Earth’s surface is known as a meteorite.

The fastest meteoroids travel through the solar system at a speed of around 26 miles per second.

The Earth’s atmosphere experiences millions of meteors every day.

Meteors are easier to see during the lower light conditions of night.

A small percentage of meteoroids fly on a path that goes into the Earth’s atmosphere and then back out again, they are known as Earth grazing fireballs.

When many meteors occur in a close time frame in the same part of the sky it is called a meteor shower.

Around 500 meteorites reach the Earth’s surface every year but of those only around 5 ever make it to scientists for study.

Interesting Dinosaur facts

Named from two Greek words meaning "terrible lizard," dinosaurs first appeared about 220 million years ago, and then disappeared rather suddenly 63 million years ago. Dinosaurs capture our imagination in many different ways. Their tremendous size, their fearsome looks, and the mystery of their extinction are but a few of the dinosaur wonders worth pondering.

The Jurassic period began about 200 million years ago and lasted about 55 million years. Many new types of dinosaurs, mammals, and reptiles emerged during the Jurassic, including the plated dinosaurs and the sauropods — heavy, long-necked dinosaurs that walked on four legs. There were also large theropods, or meat-eating dinosaurs, roaming the Earth. The first birds (and bird-like dinosaurs) also appeared during the Jurassic period.

Who is Sue? "Sue is the largest, most complete, and best preserved Tyrannosaurus rex. She was discovered by fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson in 1990, in the badlands of South Dakota." Following a long custody battle, Sue was sold at Sotheby's auction house October 4, 1997. The Field Museum purchased Sue for nearly $8.4 million - the most money ever paid for a fossil. On May 17, 2000 , the museum revealed Sue. She stands thirteen feet high at her hips and is forty-two feet long from head to tail.

Did people and dinosaurs live at the same time?

No! After the dinosaurs died out, nearly 65 million years passed before people appeared on Earth. However, small mammals (including shrew-sized primates) were alive at the time of the dinosaurs. Many scientists who study dinosaurs (vertebrate paleontologists) now think that birds are direct descendants of one line of carnivorous dinosaurs, and some consider that they in fact represent modern living dinosaurs. This theory remains under discussion and shows that there is still much we don't know about dinosaurs.

To make a long story short, after autopsies on 17,500 animals (454 species) and 3,000 humans, He found that of all the humans and animals who died from 'natural causes', all died from nutritional diseases. From these original studies, he published more than 70 peer reviewed and refereed papers on nutritional deficiency diseases. He contributed chapters to eight veterinary and medical texts, and wrote a tome on the comparative pathology of animals and humans (W.B. Saunders, 1983). His research doubled the lifespan of animals and eliminated 900+ diseases that still plague humans. Unable to convince the academic world of the value of nutrition in the 60's, he went back to school for four years and became a primary care physician. Advice from an attorney

Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all take some of his advice!

A corporate attorney sent the following out to the employees in his company: 1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put 'PHOTO ID REQUIRED.' 2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the 'For' line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.

3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have It printed, anyone can get it.

4. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, charge card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel.. Keep the photocopy in a safe place.

I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a Name, address, Social Security number, credit cards...

Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have first hand knowledge because my wallet was stolen last month. Within a week, the thieves ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information online, and more.

But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know: 5. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.

6. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).

But here's what is perhaps most important of all: (I never even thought to do this.)

7. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number... I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name.

The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit...

By the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the theft, all the damage had been done. There are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I knew about before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in).

It seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks..

Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others.

Upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took The melody out of music, The pride out of appearance. The courtesy out of driving. The romance out of love.

The commitment out of marriage. The responsibility out of parenthood. The togetherness out of the family, .

The learning out of education, The service out of patriotism. T he Golden Rule from rulers.

The nativity scene out of cities. The civility out of behavior. The refinement out of language.

The dedication out of employment. The prudence out of spending, The ambition out of achievement or God out of government and school.

And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!!

And, we do understand meaning of patriotism, and remember those who have fought and died for our country.

Turkey talk - Gobble, gobble

The official bird of Thanksgiving is chock full of surprises. For example, one of our founding fathers strongly recommended that the turkey replace the eagle as our national bird. Read on for more fun, fascinating turkey facts.

They sleep in trees

Because turkeys are so large and heavy — with the heftiest wild turkey weighing 37 pounds it's often assumed that these big birds stick to the ground. In fact, turkeys prefer to sleep perched atop tree branches, where they are safe from predators, which include coyotes, foxes and raccoons. They often sleep in flocks, and upon waking, call out a series of soft yelps before descending to make sure that the rest of their roosting group is okay after a night of not seeing or hearing one another.

Female turkeys don't gobble

Don't be disappointed if the turkey at the petting zoo refuses to gobble — it's probably a female, which is called a hen. Male turkeys are called gobblers, because they are the only ones that can make that adorable gobbling sound. Each male turkey has his own unique gobbling "technique," which he combines with strutting to attract potential mates.

Female turkeys communicate through clucks and small, chirp-like noises.

Makes you sleepy

If you feel groggy after a Thanksgiving meal, the bird on your plate may be partially to blame. Turkey meat contains tryptophan, an amino acid that the body uses to make serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain that helps regulate sleep. However, all meat contains tryptophan at comparable levels. What makes the Thanksgiving meal so memorably tiring is the mix of meat with carbohydrates. Carbs from stuffing, sweet potatoes, bread, pie and sugary sweets stimulate the release of insulin, which then triggers the uptake of most amino acids — except for tryptophan — from the blood into the muscles. With the other amino acids swept out of the bloodstream, tryptophan doesn't have to compete with them and is better able to make its way to the brain to help produce serotonin, which then preps you for sleep.

Franklin adored turkeys

Apparently, Benjamin Franklin was a big fan of the gobbling bird. He wrote in a letter to his daughter: "For my own part, I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country; he is a bird of bad moral character; he does not get his living honestly...like those among men who live by sharping and robbing...he is generally poor, and often very lousy. Besides, he is a rank coward; the little king-bird, not bigger than a sparrow, attacks him boldly and drives him out of the district...For in truth, the turkey is in comparison a more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America. Eagles have been found in all countries, but the turkey was peculiar to ours..."

They have periscopic vision

As many hunters know, a turkey has excellent vision. Because its eyes are on the sides of its head, the turkey has periscopic vision, which allows it to see objects that are not in its direct line of vision. By rotating its head, the turkey has a 360-degree field of vision.

They blush

When a turkey becomes frightened, agitated, excited or ill, the skin on its head and neck can change from its pale pink or bluish gray color to red, white, or blue. And during mating season, the male turkey's wattle turns scarlet to reflect his elevated hormone levels. The fleshy flap of skin that hangs over the gobbler's beak is called a snood and also turns bright red when the bird is excited.

They have stones in their stomachs

Here's one part of the turkey that the kids definitely won't be fighting over at the Thanksgiving table: A part of the bird's stomach, called the gizzard, contains tiny stones that the bird has previously swallowed. Also known as gastroliths, these polished stones aid in the breakdown of food for digestion, since birds do not have teeth. They do, however, have two stomachs, the first is where food is softened and broken down by gastric juices. The food then enters the turkey's gizzard, which is extremely muscular and further dissolves the food by grinding it against the gastroliths before moving the mulch along into the intestines or back into the glandular stomach for a more thorough digestion.

Once the opportunity for the hop to Offutt came I decided to take the fish wrapped in two full size bed sheets to him at Offutt. It was a quick flight to Offutt and we parked on the flight line very near the crash fire station. The layover was two hours so I figured I had plenty of time to contact Capt. Compte and have him come down to the fire station. I called his office, told him I was at Offutt and asked him to come down for a visit. He arrived shortly thereafter and we greeted each other. I asked him if he remembered our conversation at High Wycombe about fishing. He said he did and had a big grin on his face because he saw I had something in my hands. I unwrapped the fish and he let out a big chuckle. He could hardly believe his eyes. He thanked me and said he would get it home and enjoy eating the fish. While visiting the fire station I also met with some old fireman friends from past years.

One nice thing about Whiteman was its location. To the east was the old cattle trail town of Sedalia and to the west was Warrensburg, which was not far from Kansas City. Springfield was to the south on Interstate 44 and just north was Interstate 70; both highways gave easy access for travel. People frequently asked where Whiteman was located. I always made a joke of telling them that it was near the town of Knob Noster, then I would expand that to Sedalia or Warrensburg.

I took full advantage of vacation time and easy access to the highway. Missouri had numerous State Parks with most having either lakes or streams within their boundaries. My family and I loved camping in the old-fashioned five person size tents. Camping facilities at each park offered full opportunities for fishing and swimming. Our favorite places were Benett Springs near Lebanon with its natural spring gushing out of the base of a large hill, and Pomme de Terre Lake. Knob Noster even had a State Park with a nice lake and I often fished there during my lunchtime.

We had a nice school at Whiteman and our daughters enjoyed making new friends, as their first and second grades had been in England. In fact I was able to enroll the twins in an English school while stationed at RAF Fairford Air Base. Their Infant Grade was equivalent to our First Grade so when we transferred to RAF High Wycombe Air Base I was able to enroll them in the second grade in the American sponsored school.

As usual the big fire prevention program was directed toward the school children and parents. Each Fire Prevention Week, numerous activities included these folks. Poster contests, art work contests, essays, fire truck rides, open house at the fire stations and fire fighting demonstrations for the public to view were always favorites.

The time passed quickly and before I knew it another assignment required my services elsewhere. This time it was Southeast Asia. I had eleven years overseas; all were long tours. I was ripe for a short tour assignment and because my Air Force Specialty (57190) was critical, I was overdue for this assignment.

"I USED TO BE POLITICAL"

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

The answer to this age old question has perplexed people for eons.

by: Travis Harmon I used to be political. I used to partake in the debates, sport the bumper stickers, and get heated when my friends supported the guy I was against. I passionately campaigned my convictions all the way to the polls.

I’m no longer political.

Part of the reason the question is so difficult to answer is that the amount of wood that woodchucks would chuck on a given day varies greatly with One of the convictions that I held strongly is that abortion is murder. (Jeremiah 1:4-5, Psalm 139:13-14, Isaiah 49:15, Psalm 22:10) I believe in the woman’s right to choose. I believe she should either choose the seasons and with the metabolisms of any individual woodchuck. to take responsibility for her actions, or offer the child for adoption. So I voted for the candidate that Modern internet technology has advanced to the point that we can shared my views. I was duped. I felt foolish afterwards. I was completely swayed to offer a political vote reliably monitor the amount a woodchuck chucks in real time. on an issue that my candidate shared. Yet NOTHING was ever changed. A while ago a new supermarket opened in San Antonio, Texas.

It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh. Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain.

When you pass the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and there is the scent of freshly mowed hay.

In the meat department there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks with onions.

When you approach the egg case, you hear hens clucking and cackling, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.

The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked bread and cookies.

I don't buy toilet paper there anymore.
