Prayers for Baby Kayden
=============== Kayden has his eyesight back! Your prayers are being heard. Kayden Christopher is 8 months old and is from Harriman. He is the son of Matt Christopher, and grandson of Kay & Larry Christopher. Kayden has an inoperable brain tumor. He is presently at St. Judes in Memphis undergoing chemo. Although doctors have said there is nothing that can be done to help Kayden, we are asking for prayers and help. Kayden is expected to be at St. Judes at least until August. A family member must be with him 24 hours a day to monitor his progress and any problems that may arise. Although his medical and lodging bills are paid by St. Judes, there are other expenses, such as food, formula, diapers, development equipment and transportation to and from Memphis to enable family members to stay there with him. Kayden has an account at ORNL Federal Credit Union (acct. # 107004252120) for donations to help pay for the expenses. A “www.gofundme.com” account has also been set up on Facebook. Celebrities who died this month Merle Haggard, famed country music star, died of pneumonia on Apr. 6 at age 79. Haggard was most well-known for writing the song "Okie From Muskogee." Doris Roberts, star of "Everybody Loves Raymond," died on Apr. 18 at age 90. Roberts won five Emmy's in her career, including four as Ray Romano's mother, Marie. Joanie Laurer, a.k.a. Chyna, died at age 45 on Apr. 21. Known as the "Eighth Wonder Of The World," Chyna was one of the biggest stars of WWE's Attitude Era and a member of the infamous faction D-Generation X. Guy Hamilton, famed British director, died at age 93 on Apr. 21. The director was known for helming four James Bond films: "Goldfinger," "Diamonds Are Forever," "The Man With The Golden Gun," and "Live and Let Die." Prince Rogers Nelson, known simply to his fans as Prince, died at age 57 on Apr. 21. Prince was known worldwide as one of the biggest rock stars of the 80s, with albums like "Purple Rain" and "Sign o' The Times." The “Purple Rain” singer was found dead at his Paisley Park home in Minnesota, just one week after his plane made an emergency landing in Illinois, to rush him to the hospital, where he was reportedly treated for flu-like symptoms. It is believed that Prince’s untimely death was possibly due to an “accidental overdose.”

8 Poisonous Foods We Commonly Eat Would you be surprised to learn some of the foods you eat are poisonous? They are even lurking in your every day food supply. Here is a list of 8 common foods with hidden poisons you should know about. Find out how to keep yourself and your family safe by avoiding these potential dangers. 1. Lima Beans A fairly common legume that is often served in pastas, soups, and mixed vegetables, these pale green beans are not as innocent as they look. While perfectly safe when properly cooked, the little lima bean is not so nice when eaten raw. Lima beans actually contain a high level of cyanide, as part of the plant’s natural defenses, a chemical that is poisonous to humans. Thinking twice about eating lima beans? Don’t worry. The United States regulates commercially grown beans and requires that cyanide levels are monitored. Also, lima beans are fine to eat when thoroughly cooked. 2. Rhubarb Growing rhubarb in the garden? These pretty pink stalks are stellar in strawberry jam and berry pies, but stay away from the leafy greens. Unlike most garden goodies that offer extra value with many edible parts, the leaves of the rhubarb plant are to be avoided. Oxalic acid is a nephrotoxic and corrosive compound found in these leaves, and it should not be ingested, as it is commonly found in metal cleaners and bleach. Anthraquinone glycoside is another compound to watch out for. Unlike less harmful chemicals, those found in the rhubarb leaves can cause severe symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea and gastric pain. 3. Mushrooms This familiar fungi is well known for its edible varieties and poisonous counterparts. Mushrooms are delicious and add rich flavor to any dish. You may enjoy dining on portobello, shiitake, and button mushrooms among others; but there are many types that should be avoided. Certain mushroom varieties contain high levels of poison which is why it is recommended that people stick with well-known varieties when planning a meal, or consult an expert when thinking about serving something foraged in the woods. You would not want to put Amanita ocreata on top of that nice juicy burger, as it is known as the ’destroying angel’ or ‘angel of death’. One of the better known poison varieties, the Amanita phalloides, or ’death cap’, is fatal for those who ingest it and is responsible for the majority of mushroom poisonings across the world. 4. Kidney Beans Thinking about making chili tonight? Make sure those kidney beans are well cooked before serving. While a common ingredient in many recipes, these red legumes share something dubious with their cousin, the lima bean. Kidney beans contain a toxin called phytohaemagglutinin, also known as kidney bean lectin. Kidney bean lectin can cause nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and in extreme cases, fatalities. Like many other foods containing poisonous compounds, the toxin is neutralized when the beans have been cooked. The US Food and Drug Administration recommends boiling for 30 minutes to ensure they reach a sufficient temperature long enough to completely destroy the toxin. Trying to decide if you should use canned or dried beans? Canned beans are usually pre-treated and safe. Dried beans should be used as stated on the instructions with overnight soaking and long, slow cooking over moderate heat. 5. Apples Just like in the fairy tale, this favorite lunchbox. fruit can be a little poisonous. While the fruit itself is perfectly safe (though washing before eating is highly recommended), the seeds in the fruit can contain trace amounts of poison. Apple seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides which turn into cyanide through an enzymatic process. Most people stop eating their apples at the core and never get to the seeds, making this less of a concern. However, occasionally seeds do get chewed and ingested and while one or two won’t cause any problems, it isn’t recommended to have them as a snack! 6. Potatoes Mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, and French fries are not as harmless as they look. The benign potato, often a favorite staple of family meals, is not just an innocent tuber. Potatoes are actually a member of the Nightshade family. Potatoes and their mild mannered counterparts contain chemical compounds called solanine and chaconine, both glycoalkaloids. Both occur naturally in potatoes as a defense mechanism, as they have pesticidal and anti-fungal properties. Solanine is potentially poisonous to humans, and can cause gastrointestinal distress, diarrhea, vomiting, burning of the throat, dizziness, and even cardiac issues. In severe cases solanine has been known to cause hallucinations, paralysis, fever, and other severe symptoms. Solanine develops in potatoes when they are exposed to light. As long as potatoes are stored in a cool, dry, dark place and not served when they appear green, they are perfectly safe to eat. 7. Cashews Thinking about munching on some mixed nuts while watching a football game? Those nice salty cashews are only good if they are cooked. One of the most common nut varieties, cashews (which are actually a seed) contains a compound called urushiol. Perhaps you are familiar with poison ivy? Urushiol is the same compound found in the leaves of the poison ivy plant. Well raw cashews also contain urushiol, and ingesting or touching them can cause a similar reaction. Most cashews that are sold are steamed, roasted or cooked in some manner, making them safe to eat. It is only the raw variety that can cause problems. 8. Chilies Looking to spice things up? Before making that salsa or tossing a few chilies on your taco, think again. There are hundreds of chili varieties worldwide, each with their own range of heat. Whether mild and sweet or frighteningly hot, each chili contains a chemical called capsaicin. Capsaicin is an irritant with enough strength that it has been included in pepper spray used by police forces, in pest control repellents and is even an ingredient in paint stripper. While individual chilies do not contain high amounts of capsaicin, the strength of it can depend on how hot the chili is. For example, certain peppers can leave a burning sensation on the skin if the seeds or membranes are handled. While the occasional chili or two added to a recipe or eaten raw won’t do any damage, large amounts of capsaicin can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and in extremely rare cases, prove fatal.

In a quart spray bottle mix l quart warm water, 1/8 cup white vinegar and 1/4 cup white ammonia and use to clean.
Use equal parts cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide mixed together to clean rust stains. To keep rust spots from forming on the bottom of aluminum cans coat their bottoms with clear nail polish. If you have pots that have blackened because you boiled water in them, soak the pots with a pot of water in them to which you add 2 denture tablets. Let them soak overnight. The pot should be clean in the morning. Wash before using.

Easy and Tasty Strawberry Shortcake 1 1⁄2 lbs strawberries, stemmed and quartered 3 tablespoons sugar
for the cake
3⁄4 teaspoon salt 1 1⁄2 cups heavy cream
for the whipped cream
1 1⁄2 cups heavy ream, chilled 3 tablespoons sugar 1 1⁄2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest
2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1⁄4 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons sugar
To clean bottles or Thermos bottles put 2 tsp. baking soda and some hot water in it. Cap and shake. Let sit overnight to clean. Rinse well next morning. Mix strawberries with 3 tablespoons sugar and refrigerate while juices develop, at least 30 minutes. Slice a lemon in half and sprinkle some table salt on it generously. Freezer Strawberry Jam
1 quart fully ripe strawberry 4 cups sugar
3⁄4 cup water 1 box fruit pectin (like Sure Jell)
You will need clean plastic containers and lids; rinse them thoroughly with boiling water and make sure they are completely dry. Rinse strawberries gently with clean water, pat dry, then stem and crush them thoroughly, one layer at a time. Measure exactly 2 cups crushed berries into a large bowl; stir in sugar. Let stand for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mix water and pectin in small saucepan; bring to boil on high heat, stirring constantly. Continue boiling and stirring 1 minute. Remove from heat and add to fruit mixture; stir constantly for three minutes or until sugar is dissolved and no longer grainy; a few sugar crystals may remain and that's okay. Fill prepared containers immediately to within 1/2 inch of tops. Wipe off top edges and immediately cover with lids. Let stand at room temperature 24 hours. Your jam is now ready to use, and can be stored in the fridge for up to three weeks or frozen for up to one year. Thaw frozen jam in the fridge before using.

·Freshen the air by mixing baking soda with your favorite perfumed bath salts. Put the mixture in small sachet bags. ·Restore stiff brushes by boiling them in a solution of 1/2 gallon of water, 1/4 cup of vinegar, and a cup of baking soda. ·Put it under sinks and along basement windows to repel cockroaches and ants. ·Scatter baking soda around flowerbeds to prevent rabbits from eating your veggies. ·Sweeten your tomatoes by sprinkling baking soda on the soil around your tomato plants. ·Sprinkle it onto your cat’s litter box to absorb the bad odor. ·Sprinkle it on your pet’s comb or brush to deodorize their fur and skin. ·Use it as a substitute for baking powder by mixing with it with cream of tartar or vinegar. ·Wash fruits and vegetables with it. ·When boiling a chicken, add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water. Feathers will come off easier, and the flesh will be clean and white. ·Soak dried beans to a baking soda solution to make them more digestible. ·Remove the distinctive taste of wild game by soaking it in a baking soda solution. ·Make a sports drink by mixing it with boiled water, salt, and Kool-Aid. ·Remove the fishy smell from your fillets by soaking the raw fish in a baking soda solution for an hour inside the fridge. ·Make fluffier omelets by adding half a teaspoon of baking soda for every three eggs used. ·Reduce the acid content of your tomato-based recipes by sprinkling them with a pinch of baking soda. ·Add a cup to the toilet, leave it for an hour, and then flush. It will clean the toilet and absorb the odor. ·Use it to scrub sinks, showers, plastic and porcelain tubs ·Spray it on walls, mirrors, and counter tops. ·Add a spoonful to your dishwasher to make scrubbing dishes easier. ·Remove grease from pots and pans. ·Dry clean carpets and upholstered furniture by sprinkling baking soda over the fabric and gently brushing it. Memorial Day Memorial Day is officially celebrated on the last Monday during the month of May. Memorial Day is dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away. The roots of Memorial Day observance, goes back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War. Memorial Day was traditionally held on the 30th of May. In 1971, Congress changed it to the last Monday, in order to afford a three day holiday weekend. Regardless of the date, we encourage you follow Memorial Day tradition: attend a parade, and visit a cemetery to honor and remember our serviceman. Take time to remember lost loved ones in whatever way you feel appropriate. Did you Know? Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day. It was changed to Memorial Day in 1882. Memorial Day also marks the beginning of the gardening and summer seasons, even though summer will not occur until a few weeks later. This day usually includes the first family picnic of the year.

Soak for 20 minutes and let dry, will last for many years. 5.To remove wax - Take a paper towel and iron it over the wax stain, it will absorb into the towel. 6.To remove anything sticky like tape residue nail polish remover will sometimes work or buy Goo Be Gone or Goo Gone. I have used this to remove a multitude of sticky things. 7.Remove labels off glassware, etc., rub with peanut butter or Goo Gone. 8.Crayon on the wall - Colgate toothpaste and brush it. 9.Dirty grout - Use Listerine. 10.Stains on clothes – Rub in Colgate toothpaste, then rinse. 11.Grease stains – Try Coca-Cola and it will also remove grease stains from the driveway overnight. It will remove corrosion from car batteries 12.To keep fresh flowers longer, add a little Clorox or 2 aspirin, or just use 7-up instead of water. 13. If you have weeds growing in the cracks of your patio, deck, or driveway. Kill them by spraying them with a solution of 1/4 cup of salt added to 1 gallon of water. 14. Mix equal parts rubbing alcohol and white ammonia in a spray bottle to clean chrome. Can also use this to clean mirrors and windows. 15.Pour equal amounts of epsom salts and liquid dish detergent to form a paste to clean ceramic tiles. 16.Coco-cola will degrease your laundry. Add 1 can to a load of greasy laundry and launder as you normally would.
UNEXPECTED COMPANY COMING Always keep a large laundry basket where you can pick up things laying around. Concentrate on the living room, kitchen, and bathroom. Rake all the things that appear to clutter these rooms in the basket and put the basket in a closet until company leaves. If you have dirty dishes either put them in your dishwasher or into your sink and cover sink with a large cutting board. Wipe off kitchen and bathroom countertops. Close door or curtain to the tub area. Close doors to other rooms in your home and don't worry about them for the time being.

As more banks implement negative interest rates, concerns over its damaging consequences are coming to light.
There’s just something really wrong with Bob Tonachio negative interest rates —. Paying a bank to hold money for you isn’t right; even a 10 year old knows that. Central banks have gone way beyond doing what is good for the economy and our future. Now they’re taking actions that can only be characterized as downright destructive. In countries all around the world, the real problem is a lack of fiscal responsibility. You can’t wish away the consequences of fiscal mismanagement. You can’t “stimulate” enough to get rid of the consequences of spending too much money. All the quantitative easing and stimulus that the world has been throwing at their moribund economies for years now is simply adding more and more debt. Like a sugar high that quickly comes and goes, leaving you worse off than before, it is no longer useful. We are truly stealing from the future of our children. Allianz Chief Economic Adviser Mohamed El-Erian feels the same way. Speaking to CNBC this week, he said, “With ‘low and even’ world growth, you’re going to see central banks, particularly in Japan and Europe, try to do even more to boost their economies. The system isn’t built to operate with negative nominal rates… We’re going to have an impaired financial system. It means fewer long-term financial services that are credible for society.” El-Erian also cited a high political risk to negative rates: ”That’s something people can identify with. It looks absurd. What do you mean, I’m going to lend you my money and I’m going to pay you interest on my money? Give me a break. Leaders in Japan and Europe need to get their fiscal houses in order to take pressure off central banks. Central banks are like doctors, they never walk away from the patient. Even though they haven’t got the right medicine, they will continue prescribing.” In other words, governments need to stop spending money they don’t have. They need to reduce their debt levels — not just their deficits. This is the lesson, in my humble opinion, behind the lost decades in Japan. Japan threw so much money at the symptom but they never solved the problem that has hamstrung their economy. They never allowed malfunctioning banks and corporations to fail. They kept propping them up with borrowed money. Now they are approaching debt levels of 300% to GDP. It’s absurd and everyone knows it. Negative interest rates are simply the latest in a long line of misguided monetary policy that will not work. And if the entire system finally does fail, the bubble will be so big, the pressure will be so great, that entire generations could be lost — not just a few decades. Given these destructive policies from the Fed, central banks and local banks all over the world, what are you to do? For one, you can make sure that your financial house is in order, and that your savings are protected against the collapse that may be coming. Sick? Best food/Worst food to eat
Feeling queasy makes all foods sound unappealing, but the right ones can ease symptoms by calming stomach acids. In general, keep food portions small and odors to a minimum. Best foods: Saltine crackers or pretzels can help, says Dr. Lee, as does small quantities of dry toast or cereal. Ginger or lemon tea, fresh or frozen lemon slices, and peppermint also work. Worst foods: Greasy, spicy, or oily foods, caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks can make nausea worse.
It hurts to swallow
When you have a sore throat, several foods can coat your throat and soothe the pain, says Lauren Slayton, RD, founder of Foodtrainers.com and author of The Little Book of Thin (Perigee 2014). Best foods: Combine peppermint tea (lukewarm, not hot)—which has analgesic and anesthetic effects—and Manuka honey, which is known for its wound-healing properties. Soft, creamy foods such as cream soups, mashed potatoes, yogurt, scrambled eggs, and custards are also soothing. Worst foods: Avoid hot liquids and hard, scratchy foods such as potato chips, nuts, and granola. The acidic juices from raw fruits and vegetables, as well as orange juice, grape juice, and lemonade can also irritate a sore throat.
Your entire body aches
Foods that ease muscle aches depend on the specific reason for the body aches. For general muscle aches, food containing magnesium or calcium may help ease soreness. Best foods: Magnesium-containing foods include nuts, bananas, beans, leafy greens, and avocados. Foods high in calcium such as canned salmon, yogurt, dark-green leafy greens, and orange juice fortified with calcium also lessen muscle cramping and pain. Worst foods: Anything that dehydrates you can worsen muscle aches, says Dr. Arthur, particularly alcohol and caffeine.
Your head hurts
Dehydration is one of the leading causes of headaches, says Dr. Arthur, so it's best to treat that cause first and see if it relieves your pain. Best foods: Water and other fluids are your best bet. "Drink a bottle of water and wait 20 minutes to see if you feel better," says Dr. Arthur. Caffeine is known for drying you out, but ironically, it can help in small doses. "But for each cup of tea or coffee, drink an equal amount of water to avoid dehydration," Dr. Arthur says. Worst foods: Headache-triggering foods include artificial sweeteners, MSG (found in sauces and soy sauce), aged cheeses (blue, stilton) that contain tyramine, plus chocolate, red wine, hot dogs, deli meats, and dried fruit. MSG is metabolized to glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, says Dr. Arthur. Tyramine links to increased blood pressure, which can trigger headaches.
You have an earache
Earaches typically accompany other symptoms, so they're not correlated with any food in general. Since they occur most often with upper respiratory infections, however, foods that clear up congestion can help earaches as well. Best foods: Clear fluids and chicken soup ease congestion by loosening up mucous in nasal passages. Omega-3s found in salmon and nuts decrease inflammation, and vitamin C found in dark leafy greens, berries, and citrus boost the immune system, says Dr. Arthur. Worst foods: Dairy can thicken phlegm and worsen congestion, with the exception of yogurt, which contains probiotics, says Dr. Arthur. "Stay away from processed and packaged foods, too, which increase inflammation and lengthen the recovery process."
You have a runny nose
When you have a cold, the worst symptom might be a nose that just won't stop running. Aside from taking a steamy shower, Slayton suggests drinking warm tea—it may not slow down the drip, but a soothing tea will make you feel better. Best foods: Try Wakaya ginger tea. Ginger contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may help clear up a cold faster than just waiting it out. Apple cider and lemon in water works well, too. Worst foods: Spicy foods can cause an immediate runny nose (which then turns into congestion), as may alcohol.
You're stuffed up
A cold, flu or sinus infection can irritate and inflame blood vessels in your nose, making it hard to breathe. Aside from inhaling steam from a hot shower or using a humidifier, if you're stopped up due to mucous, some foods can help. Best foods: Slayton recommends "golden milk," which includes turmeric, a spice known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Place 2 cups of coconut or almond milk in a saucepan with 1 tsp dried turmeric, 1 tsp dried ginger, a dash of black pepper and honey to taste. Bring to a simmer, allow to sit for 10 minutes and serve warm. Worst foods: Skip dairy, spicy foods, and sugar, all of which can aggravate symptoms.

History of the Great Smoky Mountains
The Cherokees used to live in the Great Smoky Mountains before the European settlers appeared. The region was solely the home of the Cherokees but during the 18th and the 19th centuries, the land became populated with settlers. Most of the settlers were able to live off the land and create a good home for them throughout the entire year. All of the Native Indian tribes were removed forcefully in 1830 because of the President – Andrew Jackson. He was the one who signed the Indian Removal Act which started the forceful removal of all Indian’s and they were moved east of the park. Most of the Cherokee left their homes, however, some didn’t and hide throughout the area in which they were led by the warrior Tsali. Some of the descendants do actually live in the Qualla Boundary today! However, the logging business grew considerably as other settlers appeared on the land. There was also the Little River Railroad constructed in the 19th century which was used to specifically move all of the timber from the remote regions of the park. However, the cut and run style of the removal of the trees helped to destroy the beauty of the land. This lead to visitors and the locals to raise money for the preservation of the land; and even though the National Park service wanted to take this into their administration, they didn’t have the money to do so. The land however didn’t have a park around it. Though, the American government offered two million dollars as well as five million coming from J.D. Rockefeller Jr.; and citizens from North Carolina and Tennessee came together to offer funds. Slowly, the park was formed but in doing so, the homesteaders in the mountain ranges were removed – evicted from the land, along with the loggers and miners. Timber operations and farms were solely stopped in order to create and protect the vast areas of park also. Though the park didn’t become an international Biosphere Reserve until 1976; and it wasn’t until 83 when the park was known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Only a Mom
One rainy morning, my mother went for her daily run. As she returned to the house, she slipped and fell, hitting her head on the driveway. I called the paramedics. When they arrived, they asked my mom some questions to determine her coherency. “What is today?” inquired one man. Without hesitation, Mom replied, “Trash day.” While driving on the highway, my daughter noticed a child in the window of a car in the next lane, holding up a handwritten sign that read "Help." A few minutes later, the car passed her and she again glanced at it. The little boy held up the same sign and this time followed it with another, which read "My mother is singing!"

Dog Park Etiquette: What You Need to Know for Off-Leash Fun Dog parks are more than just places for your pampered pooch to burn off some steam and calories. Within the chain link confines of dog parks, you can find camaraderie, exercise, laughter, fun and of course, dogs! Here are some tips for merging good manners and common sense to create the ultimate dog park experience for you and your pet: Scoop the Poop Nobody likes messy shoes (or paws). As soon as your dog makes a mess, clean it up and throw it away. Many dog parks are well-stocked with “mutt mitts” for clean-up but always show up prepared with your own. This simple step will help keep the park clean and prevent the unintentional spread of disease. Bring Only Healthy Dogs to the Dog Park Make sure your dog is fully vaccinated before you go to the dog park. This is especially important for puppies. Also, check your local park’s rules and regulations—some parks don’t allow puppies younger than 4 months inside. Never take a female dog that’s in heat to a dog park either: you risk meeting up with non-neutered males and exposing your dog to aggressive pursuit. Be Responsible for Your Dog's Behavior Your dog may be good-natured and obedient at home, but be prepared to monitor her closely when exposing her to the new environment of a dog park. Keep in mind that other Pet Parents may not be as responsible as you and their dogs may not want to play. If your dog begins to growl, show teeth or behave aggressively or is the target of another dog’s aggression, intervene and redirect your dog to another area of the park. If the behavior continues, it may be best to leave the park entirely and seek the advice of a trainer who can help socialize your dog in a safe, controlled setting. We also advise limiting the number of dogs you bring to the dog park. Some parks have restrictions on how many dogs Pet Parents can bring, but even if yours doesn’t, only bring as many dogs as you can safely manage. Leave Toys at Home Some parks have communal tennis balls free for the tossing, but remember that squeaky toys, tug toys, and rope toys brought from home can cause normally docile dogs to become possessive. Avoid any possible conflict over favorite toys by leaving them at home. If you encounter a dog that is playing with a toy from home, try to steer your pet’s energy away from that pup and toward a communal ball or a play pack having a good time. Toddlers and Dog Parks Don’t risk the chance of an accident by bringing small children into dog parks. Dogs running around the park can really build up speed and aren’t always paying attention to where they are headed. Toddlers can easily be knocked over during the fun. Also remember, dogs with a strong prey drive will often chase and sometimes nip at anything small and moving. If you absolutely must bring your children to the dog park, make sure you keep a close eye on them and keep them at a safe distance from dogs at play. Remember, Safety First As soon as you enter the dog park, take off all gear other than your dog’s collar and ID tag. This will help prevent your dog’s (and any of his four-legged friend’s) teeth or jaw from getting caught in any gear. By approaching the whole dog park experience with a friendly attitude, responsible behavior, and a willingness to keep the park itself clean, you’ll find it easy for you and your dog to get exercise and socialize.

If I Had My Life To Live Over
by Erma Bombeck The following was written by the late Erma Bombeck after she found out she had a fatal disease. I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren’t there for the day. I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage. I would have talked less and listened more. I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded. I would have eaten the popcorn in the ‘good’ living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace. I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth. I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband. I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed. I would have sat on the lawn with my grass stains. I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life. I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn’t show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime. Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I’d have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle. When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, “Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.” There would have been more “I love you’s” and more “I’m sorry’s.” But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute, look at it and really see it…live it and never give it back. STOP SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF!!!

When I was a young child, about 4, mom would clean me up, put a pretty dress on me, I caught her busy, it had been raining and I was drawn to a big muddy hole in our yard, well, I escaped, got into that hole, I splashed, splashed, had a very messy time. But my clean clothes wasn’t clean no more. I got caught and my precious mama gave me an old time whipping. Now, I know without a doubt my mama loved me, but she wanted to teach me about good and bad actions, it still works. I got to thinking about that whipping, now I am 80 and I know how that when Jesus Christ saves us, He clothes us in a special white garment spotless spiritual garment, but He expects us to keep it clean, clean from sin. So, watch out for those muddy holes, full of not just mud but of filthy sin. We will get whipped some way by our savior and that whipping wont be cheap and it will hurt.

Once you start seeing the value in those little grounds, you'll stop viewing them as a hassle that's only going to go in the trash. Making coffee at home is already a great way to save money. Reusing the grounds stretches your dollar even further. So have at it. Here are seven ways to put your coffee grounds to good use. ① Clean Your Grill, Pots and Pans Abrasive coffee grounds are great for scrubbing greasy grills, pots and pans. Put grounds on a rag and gleefully scrub away, knowing you're using a natural product to eliminate hard-to-clean grime. ② Add Grounds to Your Compost Pile If you keep a compost pile, add the grounds to help improve the soil you use for your plants. Serious Eats says, "Worms love the stuff: They'll munch your day-old coffee happily, turning it into black gold by digesting it and producing nutrient-rich castings." ③ Use Them as Fertilizer for Your Plants Speaking of which, as an organic fertilizer, coffee grounds improve "drainage, water retention and aeration in soil." Mixing grounds directly into soil helps plants get essential elements like phosphorus and potassium without the use of chemical fertilizers. Be sure to rinse the naturally acidic grounds first, however, or add them to compost before using them in soil. ④ Rid Your Hands of Garlic and Onion Smells Oniony and garlicky odors like to linger on the hands. If you find yourself struggling to completely rid yourself of the gnarly stench, try rubbing your hands with coffee grounds when you're finished handling these pesky alliums. ⑤ Keep a Bowl in Your Fridge to Eliminate Odors Just as coffee can remove the stubborn smells from your hands, so too can it rid your refrigerator of lasting odors. Dry out leftover grounds, stick them in a bowl in your fridge and say so long to whatever food smells are creeping around in there. ⑥ Hide Scratches on Your Furniture Coffee's naturally dark color makes it perfect for hiding scratches on wood tables, chairs or other furniture. Let the grounds sit for up to 10 minutes to stain unwanted marks, then wipe away with a rag for a more polished appearance with almost no effort. ⑦ Use Grounds as a Rub for Meat Coffee makes a great rub on meats like pork or beef. Since they're bitter, using a sweetener, like sugar or molasses, is advisable. Get creative with it.

McIntosh gets 1st win at Smoky Mtn Speedway by: John Griffin
McIntosh gets 1st win at Smoky Mtn Speedway. After time trials on Saturday evening it was Donald Motntosh, the 23yr old, driver out of the Blount motorsports team took the checkers after 40 laps for $5,000 to win. His team mate Tommy Kerr finished 2nd with Dylan Ames 3rd, Aaron Ridley 4th and Cory Hedgecock 5th. It was sponsored by the ultimate super late models. The United Crate Series was in action with Riley Hickman taking the checkers. Raffie Comer took the checkers in the street stock feature with Jeff Molemore 2nd. Pit notes: It was nice to see Billy Ogle Jr. back in action driver for the Vanover Concrete sponsored car. On April 23rd with the WIMZ sponsored race. The presidents race has come to dirt track racing as Forrest Trent, out of Atlanta, had a trump for president sign on his hood.

"Since when is texting in church acceptable?????? My husband is beside himself over this. Three years ago a family left because my husband called the teen out during service after previously talking with her, then family, and it continued. Big hoo haw. NOW, there's another teen girl doing this, all during the service her face is stuck in her screen, oblivious to the sermon, whatever else is going on. Grandma and Grandpa sees this and say nothing. My husband has spoken to the girl, and the Grandma. What ever happened to respect in God's house??? I'm afraid there is no "real" churches left in this country if this is happening everywhere. "Church" is no more. It's a community center for fellowships, get together's, a country club. My husband may lose his position here because of these "toys". These "toys" are the ruin of common courtesy. Oh yes, the Bible is on the "toy", but there are Bibles provided, no need for those gadgets that are so distracting. A message may pop up and there you go, on a rabbit trail away from worship." (If you're texting in Church then "SHAME ON YOU", young or old for being so disrespectful!)

10 Quotes From an Oglala Lakota Chief Luther Standing Bear was an Oglala Lakota Sioux Chief. Raised in the traditions of his people until the age of eleven, he was then educated at the Carlisle Indian Industrial Boarding School of Pennsylvania, where he learned the English language and way of life. By the time of his death he had published 4 books and had become a leader at the forefront of the progressive movement aimed at preserving Native American heritage and sovereignty, coming to be known as a strong voice in the education of the white man as to the Native American way of life. 1) Praise, flattery, exaggerated manners and fine, high-sounding words were no part of Lakota politeness. Excessive manners were put down as insincere, and the constant talker was considered rude and thoughtless. Conversation was never begun at once, or in a hurried manner. 2) Children were taught that true politeness was to be defined in actions rather than in words. They were never allowed to pass between the fire and the older person or a visitor, to speak while others were speaking, or to make fun of a crippled or disfigured person. If a child thoughtlessly tried to do so, a parent, in a quiet voice, immediately set him right. 3) Silence was meaningful with the Lakota, and his granting a space of silence before talking was done in the practice of true politeness and regardful of the rule that ‘thought comes before speech.’…and in the midst of sorrow, sickness, death or misfortune of any kind, and in the presence of the notable and great, silence was the mark of respect… strict observance of this tenet of good behavior was the reason, no doubt, for his being given the false characterization by the white man of being a stoic. He has been judged to be dumb, stupid, indifferent, and unfeeling. 4) We did not think of the great open plains, the beautiful rolling hills, the winding streams with tangled growth, as ‘wild’. Only to the white man was nature a ‘wilderness’ and only to him was it ‘infested’ with ‘wild’ animals and ‘savage’ people. To us it was tame. Earth was bountiful and we were surrounded with the blessings of the Great Mystery. 5) With all creatures of the earth, sky and water was a real and active principle. In the animal and bird world there existed a brotherly feeling that kept the Lakota safe among them. And so close did some of the Lakotas come to their feathered and furred friends that in true brotherhood they spoke a common tongue. 6) This concept of life and its relations was humanizing and gave to the Lakota an abiding love. It filled his being with the joy and mystery of living; it gave him reverence for all life; it made a place for all things in the scheme of existence with equal importance to all. 7) It was good for the skin to touch the earth, and the old people liked to remove their moccasins and walk with bare feet on the sacred earth… the old Indian still sits upon the earth instead of propping himself up and away from its life giving forces. For him, to sit or lie upon the ground is to be able to think more deeply and to feel more keenly. He can see more clearly into the mysteries of life and come closer in kinship to other lives about him. 8) Everything was possessed of personality, only differing from us in form. Knowledge was inherent in all things. The world was a library and its books were the stones, leaves, grass, brooks, and the birds and animals that shared, alike with us, the storms and blessings of earth. We learned to do what only the student of nature learns, and that was to feel beauty. We never railed at the storms, the furious winds, and the biting frosts and snows. To do so intensified human futility, so whatever came we adjusted ourselves, by more effort and energy if necessary, but without complaint. 9) …the old Lakota was wise. He knew that a man’s heart, away from nature, becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of respect for humans, too. So he kept his children close to nature’s softening influence. 10) Civilization has been thrust upon me… and it has not added one whit to my love for truth, honesty, and generosity.
Making it easy Remove seeds and pulp from juice – Lay a piece of cheesecloth into the bowl or glass with the corners draped over the sides of the container, insert juice, then slowly lift out the cloth. The liquid will drain through the cheesecloth while seeds and pulp will be trapped for removal. (If you don’t have cheesecloth, this also works really well with a pair of clean stockings or nylons!) Keep cut fruit from browning. (the sweet way) – Use a 1:2 ratio of honey and water for the same effect minus the sour flavor of lemon. A Seventh Letter to America America continues to deny God and The Word of God. These haters of God continue to deny the historical fact that America was founded by people who believed in the Living God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The God who said that in the beginning He created the Heavens and the Earth and later created everything in them and that He did it for his pleasure. Each colony was founded by a different Christian denomination. Generally, a whole church congregation left their home country and shipped to what is now our America, as a church/unit. Each colony established its church denomination as that colony’s church, and taxed the residents to support it. This practice continued even after the colonies became states. When the U.S. Constitution was approved the colonies believed in the sovereignty of God Almighty over all. Because of that, most colonies specified, in their approval, that all those appointed or voted to serve in America’s three branches of government be professed Christians who knew God, and God’s Word contained in the Holy Bible, both the Old and the New Testament. Unfortunately, we now send some people to all three branches of our government who have no idea about God or what His Commandments to Man are. They have twisted God’s Word, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, and its subsequent amendments, so that everything goes. So Yes, history does show that America was founded as a Christian Nation Under God. And Yes, one of the founding fathers was a Deist (one who believes God created Heaven and Earth but then left it entirely up to Man). But Benjamin Franklin’s mistake only shows how smart educated people can be ignorant of God’s Biblical History which clearly shows God had an active hand and is still playing a part in this world. But the important thing to know is that God will punish and destroy the wicked, most of Mankind, because they rejected His plan of salvation, which He offered, through the blood of Christ. How soon, only God knows!

Today I heard an ex-Navy Seal being interviewed on Fox News regarding a book he has written about how to handle crisis situations in our lives. At the end of the interview he asked if he could make a comment on Benghazi and, of course, the anchor said "yes." He then thanked Fox News for keeping the Benghazi story in the news, since other news organizations are not. He said the Seals who died deserve the public knowing the truth about the whole affair. The poem was written by an anonymous Marine Corps officer:

9 Ways to Get Rid of Cigarette Smoke Odors from Your Hair When You Can't Shampoo A good shampoo is the best way to get rid of cigarette smells or other smoke odors. If you can't do that immediately these suggestions will help. 1.In a pinch, you can sprinkle baby powder or body powder in your hair and then brush it out. Just sprinkle it lightly, so you don't have any problems getting it out. I can remember doing this one in High School, but we'd use it to get the oil out of our hair. It worked. 2.If baby powder isn't available, baking soda will help too. Baking soda absorbs odors. It works for ashtrays, so it will work for hair. You may need to repeat this more than once. 3.Spray a styling product on your hair. The nice smell will help disguise the smell. I've used this one many times. You smell the pleasant smell instead of the smoke. Of course it only masks the odor, but it helps. 4.You can run a fabric softener sheet through your hair. Not only will it add a nice fresh scent, but it helps absorb the smell too. At the same time it will take any static out of your hair. 5.Products are available that are created to get rid of cigarette odors. Use one of these and just spray it on your hair and clothing. Sephora sells a product to spray on your hair. Other products available are Banish and Gone Smoke. I haven't tried any of these yet, but they come highly recommended. 6.Try spraying Febreze on your hair. Don't get it on your scalp and be sure it doesn't get in your eyes. Try to breathe in as little as possible of the spray . If your hair is long, hold your hair out away from your scalp and then spray. If you have short hair, this may not work as well. If you can hold your hair out far enough to keep the spray away from your scalp, you can use it. 7.If you just go outdoors in the fresh air and brush out your hair, the odor will lessen. Fresh air can do wonders. 8.Suave has a dry shampoo. If you know you are going to be in this position often, you should purchase it and carry with you. 9.Many people claim that rinsing your hair in advance with cider vinegar keeps the smoke smell from clinging to your hair. This is worth a try if you know you'll be around smoke.

Biting obviously makes hands unsightly in the short run, but it can also have longer-term effects. if you bite your nails, over time they will be become deformed with bumps and ridges. Plus, it's unsanitary. There's dirt under your nails. So by biting your nails, you're effectively eating the dirt. How to break it: Always keep your nails painted. The polish acts as a mild form of aversion therapy, since it tastes bad and visually camouflages the "edible" part of the nail. Investing time and money in professional manicures (even if your nails are super-short from biting), may enhance the effect. You'll eventually trick yourself into leaving them alone. You tend to bite at night, consider a mouth-guard that's custom-fitted by your dentist. Over time, you'll break the habit of using your teeth to release stress.

Do we have earthquakes in Tennessee? Yes. The New Madrid Seismic zone lies within the central Mississippi Valley, is 150 miles long, and touches five states. Its northernmost point is in southern Illinois and extends southward into eastern Arkansas and west Tennessee. History: From 1811 to 1812, the New Madrid Fault Zone saw some of the largest earthquakes in North America's history. During a four month period, five earthquakes with magnitude estimates of 8.0 or greater were recorded in the zone. These quakes were responsible for causing the Mississippi River to briefly flow backwards, leading to the formation of Reelfoot Lake. Activity: The New Madrid Fault Zone boasts at least one earthquake a day, though most of these quakes are too weak for us to feel. Longtime residents of Memphis may remember the 5.0 that occurred in March of 1976 or the 4.8 in September of 1990. Scientists say that the probability of a magnitude 6.0 or larger quake occurring on the New Madrid Fault in the next 50 years is between 25 and 40 percent. It may seem hard to believe that Memphis could be hit by a large magnitude earthquake, but scientists predict that we could have a big one in the next fifty years. If that happens, will you be ready? EVERYBODY...READ THIS!!!! WARNING: Some knew about the red light on cars, but not Dialing 112. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have always told her to never pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. Lauren had actually listened to her parent’s advice, and promptly called, 112 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. I never knew about the 112 Cell Phone feature. I tried it on my AT&T phone & it said, "Dialing Emergency Number." Especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going on to a safe place. *Speaking to a service representative at Bell Mobility confirmed that 112 was a direct link to State trooper info. An out-of-town pastor drove his car into a ditch in a desolated area. Luckily, a local farmer came to help with his big strong horse, named Buddy. Jonathan turned the steering wheel to make a hard right onto the gravel driveway that led to his sister’s house. The gravel crunched beneath his tires as he carefully navigated around the deep furrows that had been worn into the road. There were trees on both sides of the long drive, until he rounded a curve and passed the mailbox. Sam Salt had cleared a patch of land just big enough to build a three bedroom house on and plant a large garden. While he had been alive, he had carefully tended and maintained his property, but Annie and the boys had let it fall into embarrassing disrepair. Jonathan felt a pang of guilt as he surveyed the state of his sister’s house. He hadn’t been there in easily two years. The gutter was hanging off the end of the house, and the yard was overgrown. It looked like it hadn’t been mowed at all since the grass started growing in the spring. He pulled to a stop at the edge of the yard beside of his brother’s car. He had only briefly spoken to Titus on the phone after he received his text the day before saying they needed to talk. Titus called from the hospital where he was sitting with Annie, who had to have her stomach pumped. Jonathan hadn’t got a lot of details over the phone. As he stepped out of his car, the front door opened, and Titus walked out to meet his brother. “Hey.” Titus gave his older brother a quick hug. “Hey.” Jonathan hated how awkward he felt. “So, what happened?” Titus leaned against the car, and folded his arms across his chest. “I’m not exactly sure why any of it happened, but I guess Annie overdosed on her prescription sleeping pills and her antidepressants. Caleb tried to wake her up, and called an ambulance when he couldn’t rouse her. He rode with her to the hospital, and called me when they got there. They had just pumped her stomach when I got there.” “How is she?” Jonathan asked. “She’s okay. Mom and Dad are with her now. They kept her overnight, but they’re going to have her put in Lakeside for a while.” Jonathan sighed. “Lakeside is the…” “Mental health hospital.” Titus finished his brother’s sentence. “Mom said she and Dad would take care of Annie, and for us to take care of the boys.” The familiar pangs of guilt crept up Jonathan’s spine and made his skin crawl. “What’s the plan?” Titus briefly looked irritated. Jonathan could see his brother attempt to neutralize his expression before he said, “That’s why I texted you. I thought we could talk about it. Talk to the boys. Figure something out.” “Okay.” Jonathan nodded. “Are the boys all home.” “Yeah. Clay just got here. They’re in the house.” Titus turned and began walking toward their sister’s house, so Jonathan meekly followed. When they passed from the bright sunlight into the dim interior, Jonathan had to let his eyes adjust. “Hi, Uncle Jonathan.” Caleb had stepped toward his uncle, and was standing awkwardly before him. “Hey, Buddy.” Jonathan gave his nephew a hug, and asked, “How are you holding up?” “I’m fine.” Caleb shrugged. “I’m really sorry about your mom.” Jonathan’s words felt hollow to him. He was usually so good in these situations. He had been in a good many of them in the role of pastor. It was different when it was his own family. He felt inept. He didn’t know what to say, and he couldn’t shake the feelings of responsibility that made his scalp itch and his fingers tremble. “Me, too.” Caleb answered. “It was pretty scary. But the doctor said she would be okay.” “Except they put her in the loony bin.” Travis sounded both morose and angry.

Titus sat down on the couch beside of his seventeen year old nephew, and gave his knee a quick squeeze. “Your mom needs to get some help.” “She wasn’t trying to kill herself.” Travis slumped farther down into his seat. “She said she was just missing Daddy and wanted to go to sleep.” Titus nodded sympathetically, and said, “Either way, Buddy, she needs to get some help.” Jonathan watched Titus’ interactions with their two younger nephews, and envied the easy way he spoke and acted with them. Jonathan had been away from Little River for four years, living in Louisville, and had only seen his family once a year during that time, at Christmas. He had been back home for four years, but had barely seen more of them now that they all lived in the same town than he had when he was away. He hadn’t meant for it to be that way, but his church work had consumed him, along with his own young family. His twenty year old nephew, Clay, the oldest of the four brothers, cleared his throat. Jonathan raised his eyes from their fixed focus on the toes of his worn loafers to look at his nephew. “I’m not sure what’s going on with Mama.” Clay’s voice was deep, and Jonathan was surprised to see a week’s worth of scruffy beard on his nephew’s face. “Josh and I are fine to stay here, obviously. We’re both adults. But I work till late, and I’m beat when I get home. Josh is only eighteen, and I don’t think he’s ready to be responsible for these other two.” Josh looked relieved that he wasn’t going to be asked to babysit his younger brothers, and Travis looked annoyed to be spoken of like a child. “I’ll be eighteen soon!” Travis protested. “I don’t need anyone to be responsible for me.” Clay rolled his eyes. “Your birthday isn’t for another seven months.” Titus spoke then, “No one is saying you’re a kid, Trav, but you are still legally a minor. With your mom gone for a while, we need to make sure we don’t get in trouble with you and Caleb.” “How long is Mama going to be gone?” Caleb asked, his voice sounding nervous. “We don’t know yet.” Titus replied. “We’re kind of playing this by ear until we do.” “Well, if we can’t stay here with Clay and Josh, where are we going to go?” Travis sounded angry. “Foster care?” “Of course not!” Titus said quickly. He put his arm around Travis’ shoulders. “We would never let that happen. Would we, Jonathan?” Jonathan had slipped into the silent role of an observer, and was startled to be called upon. “No, of course not.” “Where are we going to go?” Caleb asked. Titus’ eyes sought Jonathan’s, and Jonathan looked helplessly back at him. “You can come stay with me.” Titus said to Caleb. “Until your mom gets better.” Jonathan could hear the fatigue in his brother’s voice, and he knew they were both thinking the same thing. New findings suggest that fellow artist Paul Gau-guin cut it off with a sword during a fight with Van Gogh. The pair had sworn a vow of silence to each other, which is why news of what really happened didn't surface until after Van Gogh had died. Chameleons change colors to camouflage themselves. Chameleons actually change colors for a different reason. Colors on the lizards change both as a characteristic of mating behavior and as a method to regulate their body temperatures. For example, they change from a light to dark color to absorb more heat. Christopher Columbus discovered America and the fact that the Earth is round. Neither, actually. Ancient Greek mathematicians had formulated theories about the roundness of Earth some 2,000 years before Columbus lived. Also, while many credit Columbus with the discovery of America, viking Leif Erikson actually discovered it first in 1,000 A.D. Different tastes are detected on different parts of the tongue. The entire surface of the tongue equally detects different tastes, whether it's sweet, salt, bitter or sour. It's actually a protein on the tongue that detects the taste of something sour.

Who's Leading Who?
Who's leading who? In many cases, it's the dog leading the owner, both literally and figuratively. The following leadership tips from Melissa Berryman will help. Melissa is founder of Dog Bite Alternatives, an organization that offers education and solutions to dog owners, communities, and shelter/rescue groups. "As a former shelter manager," says Melissa, "I dealt mostly in crisis situations and remaining within their families. My emphasis is on coaching people to be better leaders." * Dogs are not little humans; they are predatory pack animals who follow a leader. * Leader dogs need to know that their owners are better leaders, and flight dogs need to know that they will be protected when their environment scares them. * To be a true leader, give constant feedback and keep control at all times. * If a newly adopted dog growls or snaps, realize this is normal. The owners need to assert leadership to convey to the dog that they won't tolerate this behavior. "If you back down, or become frightened, your dog gains power over you." * Seek out an obedience program that focuses on teaching you how to provide leadership, relationship building and problem-solving.
Dog Tip: How to Get Your Dog's Attention You may adapt these tips for use with a child, spouse or boss, and it may work with cats. Getting attention is a critical first step to teaching anyone anything. It's essential for avoiding mishaps and accidents. But many people neglect to work on this basic skill with their dogs. Whether we talk about people or dogs, in order to learn, we must be paying attention. Your dog must learn to look up at you and hold that position until you give him another cue or release him. We then utilize the dog's attention when we teach a "Leave It" command. THE NAME GAME: 1. Say your dog's name - only one time. When your dog looks at you, use the verbal marker "YES" or click your clicker and reward with treats, toys, and/or verbal praise. Stop rewarding if your dog looks away. 2. Repeat several times a day. 3. Gradually add distractions. Make sure your reward is better than the distraction. 4. Play often and reward generously until your dog spins on a dime when he hears his name.

When Dogs Chase Cats
Often, the crux of the problem that the dog likes to chase the cat. Hence, the dog will not stop doing so on his own. In fact, he is likely to develop new and better ways to make it more enjoyable - feign unconcern then leap up when the cat gets close, let the cat walk up for a sniff, then lunge at the last moment. Ah, the joys of it - for the dog. The cat, however, is having less fun. Here are my ideas: High Hiding Spots Your cat needs places he can retreat to safely when he is downstairs. Those floor-to-ceiling climbers work well for this. Make sure they are securely installed then let your cat discover it. This will create safe harbor downstairs. Dog on Lead Until you have verbal control [which few people ever achieve], you must have physical control over your dog. Chasing is a potent reward for many dogs, and it will take some consistence and persistence to get it under control. Until then, keep the dog on lead when a cat is around. [Note: Do not leave leash or training collars on a dog when not you're not supervising -- the dog could get strangled. Use only a snug-fitted flat buckle collar for ID.] Teach Dog "Leave It" and "Down" Work on these two behaviors when the cat is not around. Work on them with praise, play and treats until your dog is eager to hear them uttered. Do dozens of repetitions until your dog understands exactly what you want him to do. Reward Calm Behavior When your dog does begin to listen with the cat around, reward all of his efforts with food rewards, petting, praise and anything else he enjoys (except chasing the cat!). Sometimes we get so caught up in waiting to see if the bad thing is going to happen that we forget to reward the seconds or minutes of good behavior that came before it. Strive to notice EVERY good moment and let him know: "THAT is what I want!" Crating the Dog Having your dog crated will allow your cat to explore without worry of ambush. Crating him at night may give the cat the chance to explore at will.
