SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY By O.I. Seenya • Man seen kicking dog on Roane Street near Food City in Harriman. • A local man passing away who had the same name as a well-know man from Midtown. An old friend sent a very nice sympathy card to the midtown man’s wife. The midtown man in turn called the nice lady and thanked her for the sympathy card. She was shocked yet relieved to hear her old friend’s voice.

Roane County Census As of the census of 2010, there were 54,181 people, 22,376 households, and 15,450 families residing in Roane County. The population density was 150 people per square mile. There were 25,716 housing units at an average density of 71 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 94.4% White, 2.7% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.0003% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. 1.3% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 22,376 households out of which 23.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31% were non-families. 26.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.88. In the county, the population was spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18 and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44.9 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.85 males.

Teenage friends When I was in the 6th grade, we moved from Emory Gap to the Little Emory area. I immediately made new friends, and seemed to always run around with girls younger than me. (I was later told it was so I could feel like the leader). But it was really because I was so immature and green that I just felt more comfortable with younger friends. There were five of us who spent every available minute together throughout our teenage years. Our biggest concerns at that time were getting the best tan possible, finding a ride to the Princess Theater or the Dance on Saturday night, and finding a safe place to sneak and smoke cigarettes. We lived on Old Coalfield Road, and there was a railroad track that ran parallel to the road. A train would run twice a week, going to Brushy Mountain Prison. The rest of the week it was abandoned. We made a path through the bushes, and would sit for hours on the tracks and talk and smoke. Because of fear of death from our Moms, we would hide our cigarettes under the tracks beside the railroad ties. When it rained we would have to dry them out by placing them in the sun on the tracks for about an hour. And sometimes, rats would chew on them—but cigarettes were scarce in those day and we smoked them anyways. I’m not going to mention any names because some of their moms are still living, and they may not want our “bad” past revealed. But we were good kids. The worse thing we did was smoke. We earned our own money to buy them by selling Coke bottles or digging red worms and selling them. Every Saturday night was spent at one of our houses. We camped out in a barn, a basement and in a super big station wagon, just so we could smoke and talk all night. When we were older and more mature, we discovered boys. We became too grown up to continue our fun times and went our separate ways. (Girls, we must make a date to meet and sit and talk about these old times). We’re all grandmothers now, and way too dignified to go sit on a railroad track to smoke and talk for hours, but isn’t it sad that our grandkids won’t know fun and friendship like we had? Nowadays, kids don’t just sneak and smoke cigarettes. They are having babies at 13 years old, and/or addicted to heroin and meth. They’re not enjoying the simple things life and friends can provide, and this makes me feel really sorry for them.

ENTERTAINMENT Top TV shows in the 50s Today Show - NBC - On January 14 1952, The Today Show, a long running morning news program on NBC, went on the air. It aired at 7:00 A.M. (Eastern Time) as a 2-hour news and information show. What's My Line? CBS - A game Show with Panel. First Telecast: February 2, 1950. What's My Line? was one of network television's longest running and most beloved prime time game shows. The game consisted of four panelists trying to guess the occupation of a guest contestant. A panel member asked questions and the guest would answer either "yes" or "no." A contestant received $5 for each "no" answer. Ten "no" answers ended the game in favor of the contestant. Gunsmoke - CBS - Dodge City, known as the Sodom and Gomorrah of the plains, is a typical frontier city of the late 1800s with typical problems ranging from rumored Indian raids to bank and stage robberies, cattle rustling, and family feuds. All of these must be dealt with within the law and that task falls to Matt Dillon, US Marshal (James Arness). Perry Mason - CBS - There are few actors so closely tied to a persona than Raymond Burr as Perry Mason. This long-running series was built upon Erle Stanley Gardner´s many novels about a brilliant defense lawyer and his staff, that solved many a crime with surprise witnesses and stern cross-examinations. I Love Lucy - CBS - Cuban-born bandleader, Ricky Ricardo, and his wife, Lucy, live in a Brownstone apartment building on East 68th Street in New York City. The beautiful but daffy Lucy has the nasty habit of getting into jams, scrapes, and predicaments of all kinds. The Ricardos' best friends and landlords, Fred and Ethel Mertz, frequently find themselves in the middle of Lucy's outlandish escapades. The Twilight Zone - CBS - A collection of various tales from the tragic to the comedic. They may be scary or just thought-provoking. Most episodes have unexpected endings and a moral lesson. But, no matter what, it's "a journey into a wondrous land, whose boundaries are that of the imagination." Rod Serling, creator and host . Have Gun - Will Travel - CBS - Paladin was not your normal gunfighter. He was an educated and a traveled man. A West Point graduate, he served as a Union officer during the Civil War. After the war, he went west and became a high-priced 'gun for hire.' The Jack Benny Program - CBS - Jack Benny made his television debut after a long career in vaudeville, radio and film. During his radio series he cultivated the traits that his television character would have as well. Jack's on-air persona was of a vain, stingy character who always claimed to be age 39. Jack's radio show aired on NBC & CBS from 1932-1955, overlapping the TV show.

Rooney dies broke Mickey Rooney signed his last will just weeks before death, leaving a modest estate to a stepson who had been his caretaker. Rooney's will was filed and signed by him on March 11 and called for his stepson Mark Rooney and his wife to be the sole beneficiaries of the actor's estate, which is valued at only a mere $18,000. Rooney said he had lost most of his fortune because of elder abuse and financial mismanagement by another one of his stepsons.

Common Mistakes Growing Tomatoes in Containers
Gardening blues
Growing tomatoes in containers is almost always an adventure. It can be incredibly rewarding, or flat out disastrous. Sometimes epic failure can happen for reasons beyond your control like tomato blight or a ridiculously wet or cold summer. But there are some common mistakes (trust me, I've made all of them, many more than once) that if you can avoid them, will vastly increase your chances of growing tomatoes in containers successfully. Small Containers: When it comes to tomato containers, bigger is better. The bigger your container, the more soil it will hold. The more soil you have the better the soil holds water. Also, the more soil the more available nutrients for your plants. Consistent water and food are two of the most critical elements for happy, healthy tomato plants and large harvests. Too Much Water: Watering your tomato plants properly is probably the main key to tomato success. Too much water and the plants drown, too little and you get blossom end rot. Inconsistent watering will get you blossom end rot, split tomatoes and stressed plants. So here's a critical thing you must do for tomato success (and the most difficult if you are using conventional pots instead of self watering). You want to keep the soil in your pots consistently moist - not wet, but damp. Before you water, check if your soil is already moist. To do this put your finger into the soil about an inch. Add water if the soil feels dry to the touch. Don't forget drainage too. Make sure your pot has large holes in the bottom so excess water can drain out. Pot feet are also a good idea if you have your pot on a patio or non-porous surface. Add water until it drains out the bottom of your pot. That way you will know that all of the roots, even those at the bottom of the pot, have gotten watered. Too Little Water: The amount of water your tomato plant needs will depend on a few things including the whether. Wind, heat, humidity, the size of your pot and the kind of potting soil you use will affect how often you need to water. By mid-season, a large tomato plant may need watering at least once a day - sometimes twice. Also, when you water, make sure to really soak your plants – if you just give them a sip, the water will only wet the top layer of soil. When you water, try to water the soil directly, not the leaves, because wet leaves can lead to fungus.

The only way to ensure rain, is to give the garden a good soaking. Weeds grow at precisely the rate you pull them out. Nothing ever looks like it does on the seed packet. Autumn follows summer, winter follows autumn, drought follows planting. The only way to guarantee some color all year round is to buy a garden gnome. However bare the lawn, grass will appear in the cracks between the patio paving stones. Evergreens go a funny shade of brown in the winter.
Reuse Teabags Here's a great way to reuse all the old tea bags you have around the house: use them for your plants. Tea bags can be used as an organic fertilizer for potted house plants, with many stimulant benefits from the nutrients in the ingredients. You can even remove the bags and mix the tea leaves inside with your soil, helping absorb water and retaining moisture. If your problem is leaking bottom holes in the plant containers, you can use teabags to prevent the leakage. This also works well for hanging planters.

Wind in the Bible
An Ohio couple who held hands at breakfast every morning even after 70 years of marriage have died 15 hours apart. Helen Felumlee from Ohio died April 12. She was 92. Her husband, 91, Kenneth Felumlee, died the next morning. The couple's children say the two met as teenagers and had been inseparable since then, once sharing the bottom of a bunk bed on a ferry rather than sleeping one night apart. Relatives said that after a few years of dating the young couple snuck off to a court house in Kentucky to elope with $5 in their pocket, enough to pay the $2 marriage fee. The pair were married on 1944, two days shy of Kenneth's 21st birthday meaning he was too young to marry in Ohio. Reportedly afraid to break the news to their parents, the couple spent the first weeks of their marriage living separately until Kenneth spoke up. The two went on to have eight children with Kenneth working for a railroad company and as a mechanic before becoming a mail carrier. He was also an active member in their church, and willing to lend a hand whenever it was needed. The family said the two were deeply in love to the end. When their children grew up and had families of their own, they began traveling the country, visiting nearly all 50 states by bus. The kids said their dad began to fade 12 hours after their mom died and told them that he didn't want to leave her by herself. They have 23 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren.
There are hundreds of references to wind throughout The Bible. Wind can be caused by such natural factors as the unequal heating of the planet's surface, whereby warmed air rises and cooler air flows in to replace it. Or, God can create and direct the wind for whatever purpose that He chooses. Throughout Bible History, God often used the wind, and other elements of the weather, according to His will: "But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided." Food Facts
An apple in the morning is more efficient than caffeine in coffee. Are you trying to slice something small like an olive? Hold the olive firmly with a fork and then slice between the tines. Can't get your kids to eat fruit? Cut up fruits for younger children, and they'll be more likely to eat them! Treat the edges of apples, bananas and pears with orange or lemon juice to prevent them from turning brown. Get the most juice from lemons and limes. Roll them firmly on a countertop with the palm of your hand before squeezing them. Easily remove egg shells from hard-boiled eggs. Boil eggs in salt water and quickly rinsed in cold water. Keep celery fresh for weeks. Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator. Don't slice your cantaloupe until you've washed the outside. Cutting through a melon can draw in bacteria from the surface, contaminating the inside. Wash the rinds with hot soapy water and then rinse well. The same goes for other melons, like winter squash and pumpkins! Keep potatoes from budding. Place an apple in the bag with the potatoes. Prevent egg shells from cracking. Add a pinch of salt to the water before hard-boiling. If an egg cracks when you boil it, add a little vinegar to the water to prevent white from streaming out of shell. Take away salt. If you accidentally over-salt a dish while it's still cooking, drop in a peeled potato. It absorbs the excess salt. Take away sugar. If you're cooking and you've over-sweetened a dish, add a little salt.
New Harriman Book Brings History to Life Local author depicts city's history in over 200 vintage images.
Images of America: HARRIMAN New from Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series is Harriman by local author John Norris Brown. "This book is an attempt to bring this history to life through historical photographs of the people, places, events, and institutions that have made Harriman special" writes the author. In 1891 Harriman was incorporated as a temperance town. Its founders envisioned a utopia of Victorian morality established both for the betterment of mankind and for business profit. The dreams of the founders, however, were never realized and Harriman would come to experience a series of highs and lows over the next century. From the 1940s to 1960s the town prospered from the hosiery and paper mills, and downtown Harriman was the center for social life. When the mills closed and jobs left the city, Harriman saw a period of decline. Today, the city remains proud of its heritage, celebrating at the annual Hooray for Harriman event and restoring The Princess Theatre. A Harriman native, Brown feels that "it is an honor to work on such an important project, and it is the author's sincere wish that this book will help reignite interest in preserving the history of the 'Town that Temperance Built."' Highlights of Harriman include: • Vintage photographs from the Harriman Heritage Museum, to whom a portion of the books profits will be donated. • images of numerous Harriman landmarks, including the "old bridge", balancing rock, the Baumann gristmill, the Temperance Building, the Princess Theatre, Roane Street, and others. • Photographs of Harriman pioneers and prominent citizens.
Meet the Author John Norris Brown, 33, is a native of Harriman and a professor at Roane State Community College, where he teaches courses in political science and history and serves as Service Learning Coordinator. A world traveler and graduate of Roane State Community College, the University of Tennessee, and Appalachian State University, Brown has deep roots in the community; his grandparents moved to Harriman shortly after World War II, where his grandfather sold insurance on Roane Street for over 50 years. Brown became interested in Harriman's history from growing up in the city, hearing his parents' and grandparents' stories, and from reading Walter Pulliam's book Harriman: The Town That Temperance Built. A lifelong lover of books, compiling and editing Images of America: Harriman has been a dream come true for him. When not doing historical or genealogical research, Brown enjoys spending time with his wife and two dogs, reading, writing, hiking, photography, and traveling. His hope is that this work will instill a greater interest in Harriman's history, bring back fond memories for residents, and help inspire others to work to preserve the city's history. He will be giving a brief talk and signing copies in the library of Roane State in Harriman from 6:00 -7:00pm on Thursday, May 8th. Things you can do with packing tape
Cork a wine or champagne bottle. Wipe the lip of the bottle dry and seal tightly with a small piece of packing tape. Remove a splinter or bee sting. Place tape over splinter and gently peel off. Hold wires in place while soldering. Clean a metal file. Put a piece of tape over the length of the file, press firmly, then peel off. Provide first aid in an emergency. Bandage wounds with torn sheets and packing tape, or make emergency splints with two-byfours and tape. Kill ants. Use a strip of tape to pick up advancing line of ants. Tag the pull cord that opens the drapes. Wrap ½ inch piece at eye level around the right cord. Remove fuzz, lint, and hair from clothing and furniture. Wrap a strip of packing tape around your hand, adhesive side out, and pat. Remove a broken windowpane. Wearing gloves, criss-cross tape on both sides of the glass and tap the inside edges with a hammer until the pane breaks free. Organize cables and extension cords.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes
Household Hints • Dissolve soap residue in your washing machine. Periodically pour a cup of vinegar in the machine and let it run through a regular cycle without clothes in the machine. • Is your bathroom sink clogged? Cover the overflow hole with a rag when plunging a bathroom sink so the plunger has maximum effect. • Clean burnt food from pots and pans. Add baking soda and water to the pan, heat it to boiling and then let it sit about 15 minutes. • Clean non-washable wallpaper. Make a fist size wad of rye bread and rub across discoloration's and dirt. • Clean washable wallpaper. Lift grease stains with a paste of cornstarch and water or rub dry borax over stains. • Remove stubborn wallpaper. Mix some hot water with a bit of fabric softener in a paint tray and apply several coats to the wallpaper. Let it soak in then scrape off the paper with a putty knife. • Clean lint out of the back of hair dryer. Take a cotton swab and dip it in rubbing alcohol. When you use the swab on the lint it will come right off. • Make a liquid to clean glass. Mix two cups water, two tablespoons liquid dishwashing detergent, and two cups isopropyl rubbing alcohol (70 percent). Stir thoroughly then pour into clean pump spray bottle. • Repair carpet dents. Fill a spray bottle with water and spritz it over the dents (or put an ice cube in each indentation and let the cubes slowly melt ). Then use a blow dryer and blow hot air over the moistened areas. The heat helps wool and nylon carpet rebound. Fluff up the fibers with your fingers and the dents will be gone. • Remove gum from carpets. Use an ice cube to freeze the gooey glob then remove as much as possible with a dull knife moving from the outside in. If there's still gum residue, use some dry-cleaning fluid available at drug and hardware stores.

Easy Garlic Chicken 1 1/2 lbs. skinless, boneless breast halves 1/4 cup butter
6 cloves crushed garlic 2 cups seasoned dry bread crumbs
Preheat oven to 375. In a small saucepan melt butter/margarine with garlic. Dip chicken pieces in butter/garlic sauce, letting extra drip off, then coat completely with bread crumbs. Place coated chicken in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Combine any leftover butter/garlic sauce with bread crumbs and spoon mixture over chicken pieces. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
French Onion Baked Potatoes 1/4 cup olive oil 1 package French Onion recipe mix
1/2 tsp. dried rosemary leaves, (optional) 4 medium red potatoes, cut into large chunks
Preheat oven to 425°. Combine all ingredients in broiler pan without the rack or in 13x9 inch baking or roasting pan. Bake uncovered, stirring occasionally, 35 minutes or until potatoes are tender and golden brown.
Smokey Mac & Cheese Pasta 2 slices thick cut bacon, cut into thin strips 1 cup chopped red bell pepper 1 cup finely chopped yellow onion

Cook bacon in medium saucepan over medium high heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, about 4 minutes. Stir red pepper and onion into saucepan and cook, stirring occasionally, until crisp-tender, about 3 minutes. Remove from saucepan and set aside. Prepare Pasta Sides - Chicken flavor in same saucepan according to package directions. Stir in chicken, cheese, peppers and onion during the last 2 minutes of cook time. Garnish, if desired, with chopped parsley
Caramelized Bananas 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 2 firm bananas, peeled, and sliced lengthwise 3 tablespoons butter or margarine Spread Whipped Topping 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon Heat sugar, Parkay and cinnamon in medium skillet over medium-high heat; when bubbly, add bananas. Cook 1 minute on each side or until bananas are warm and glaze has thickened slightly, spooning glaze over bananas. Top each serving with Reddi-Wip. Serve immediately.

To keep lint and dust off glass top tables, wash them in a solution of warm water and fabric softener. Add one tablespoon of liquid fabric softener to one quart of warm water. The fabric softener will clean the glass inexpensively and will help keep lint from gathering on the glass. Also great for computer screens and TV's. Keep your bathroom mirror from fogging up. Spread shaving cream on and wipe off; effective for two to three weeks. Or rub mirror with drop of shampoo.

Disposal cleaning To freshen the garbage disposal, sprinkle a few tablespoons of baking soda down the drain, drop in two ice cubes and turn it on. Flush with hot water. Oven Racks Place racks in the bathtub with 1/2 cup dishwasher detergent and several inches of warm water. Allow to soak for 45 minutes. Just rinse. No scrubbing needed. Dishwasher To remove scale, stains & odors from the dishwasher, start the cycle with the dishwasher empty. When it has filled with water, add two cups of white vinegar and allow the cycle to complete. Glass Light Fixtures Run these through the dishwasher to get them sparkling clean without any effort.

Make your own fishing pole Here are some instructions for making an inexpensive fishing pole of your own. Start with a green sapling (a young, live branch from a leafy tree) that is 3/4 inch diameter at the base and 4 to 5 feet long. First, get permission to cut the sapling. Then, have an adult assist you in using pruning shears or a saw to remove the sapling. Or you can buy a piece of bamboo. I've bought 5 feet of bamboo for less than $2 from a garden store. The length of your pole will determine how far from shore you can place your bait, so try longer poles as you gain experience. Fallen logs and aquatic vegetation near shore are places that fish often hide out. Next gather materials: fishing line, hooks, bobbers, and sinkers. Either buy these from a sporting goods store, or ask a relative or friend to help you find them. Trading fishing tackle for your services, such as raking leaves or taking out the trash, is a great way to say "Thank you." Fishing line. Cotton, Dacron, or mono-filament will work fine. I've even used kite string or dental floss. Cut a piece about 2 feet longer than your pole. Hooks. Use a size 6 or 8 because they work for a wide variety of fish. Circle hooks allow you to catch fish without setting the hook. Bobbers. A simple float will show you when a fish strikes. Find a small cork, such as one used in a wine bottle. Wrap a rubber band tightly around the cork and slip your line under the rubber band. Or buy a classic red-and-white plastic bobber at a store. Sinkers. A sinker, also called a weight, brings bait down to where the fish live. Buy split-shot sinkers at a bait-and-tackle shop. The DNR suggests lead-free sinkers because lead can be poisonous to people and wildlife. Or try metal washers or nuts from your home toolbox. Attach the line to the skinny end of the pole by wrapping it a couple times and finishing with a couple of half-hitch knots. Hint: You tie your shoe with a half-hitch knot. Tie the hook on the free end of the line, using an improved clinch knot. Unless you are using a circle hook, it is a good idea to squeeze down the barb on the hook with a pair of pliers to make it easier to get the hook out of the fish's mouth. Attach the bobber about 2 feet above the hook. Place the sinker between the hook and bobber. Now you're ready to fish!

You can find earthworms and night crawlers throughout most of our state. Look for worms under logs, rocks, and old boards. If you have a compost pile, dig there. At night after a rain, you can pick worms off your driveway, sidewalk, or lawn. Keep worms in a container with holes in the lid. Add loose soil and dry, crumbled leaves from your yard. Store your container in a cool place, such as your basement or refrigerator, and the worms will survive for weeks. Getting your worm on the hook can be tricky. My dad showed me that if you slap a worm between your slightly cupped hands, it stops wiggling for a few moments so you can get it onto the hook.
Woodpeckers are known for tapping on tree trunks in order to find insects living in crevices in the bark and to excavate nest cavities. Woodpeckers primarily eat insects, along with fruit, acorns and nuts. Woodpeckers have bristle-like feathers over their nostrils that help to keep wood particles from being inhaled. There are over 180 species of woodpeckers. Woodpeckers can be found in wooded areas all over the world, except in Australia. The woodpecker's strong, pointed beak acts as both a chisel and a crowbar to remove bark and find hiding insects. It has a very long tongue, up to four inches in some species - with a glue-like substance on the tip for catching insects.

Think flies are harmless? There are over 300,000 species of flies. Most of us have dealt with the house fly. They are annoying to say the least. When they get in your house, it's worse to deal with. At least they don't bite you. I thought I would share some interest facts about flies with you. Next time one of those little things gets on you or your food, you're likely to remember a few of these interesting facts. The average house fly lives about 30 days. This is good to know. If they get trapped in your house, you don't have to worry about it being around for long. Flies lay up to 3,000 eggs in their lifetime of one month. I guess if you're waiting for that fly in your house to die in a month, you have bigger problems in about 14 after the eggs are laid, you'll have up to 3,000 flies. Better hope it's a male that's trapped in your house! Flies only have 2 wings. Most insects have 4. Their wings beat up to 200 times per second and stop immediately when their feet land. Flies have over 4,000 lenses per eye (they only have 2 eyes) but can't see worth a darn! Their vision may be bad but they detect movement. If you want to swat one of them, you better start out slow. They're likely to ignore you if you're not fast. When initiating their take off, flies jump up then backwards before moving forward. Flies lay eggs on their food. This also could possibly be your food too. Doesn't that sandwich still look yummy! Flies have a glue like substance on the pads of their feet that help them stick to surfaces. Flies vomit on food before eating it. They can only consume liquids so their vomit is a tool to liquefy their food. Their saliva turns the rest into complete liquid before they swallow it. Now I'd really like to have that sandwich now! Flies defecate every 4-5 minutes. That's interesting. Hopefully they land on you in between their poop sessions. I used to think these things were not that bad. They don't hurt you with a sting or bite but they certainly carry plenty of diseases with them, vomit, lay eggs and poop on you and/or your food.

Please be careful, Satan has so many entertainments to deceive us, he knows if he can keep your mind busy long enough it will be too late for you to let God convict you or your sins and forgive you! Don't refuse to believe that there is a Heaven and a real hell. Make your choice now - Will you enter into Heaven or hell!? We can put blinders on our eyes, plug up our ears or even harden our hearts so not to be convicted of our sins, but God will not change His Holy Word to suit what we want it to be! God won't change but we can, will you? Please break-down the strong-holds that Satan has put up around you. He knows your weaknesses and how to deceive you. The only way to escape from him is only possible with Gods' help, God has a plan for you if you let Him.

She sold eggs, to buy our shoes sometimes a dainty frill By pulling weeds & raking leaves she always paid the bill. Everything us kids would want, we had to earn the money, mowing all the neighbors yards, or gatherin' eggs & honey. If we wanted candy, we always had our fill but for everything we got, we had to pay the bill. I remember when my dad spent years just savin up' bought a brand new carriage, with a fringe on top. We kids fairly danced with joy... we shouted fit to kill, for we knew, twas really ours, cause dad had paid the bill. These days folks buy what they want for just a dollar down. They forget, as time goes on, payday rolls around. They fall deeply in debt, it turns hair to grey, credits easy, ...but remember there is a bill to pay.
Rivers flow like blue eyes glow, birds fly high in the sky, and flowers sway in midday. When the clock ticks, the rhythm sticks.
Oh what a day for the kids to play. Do you remember the day when kids could play And their childhood was good?
Now we have the "credit" crowd in religion too. Oh they cry as they confess attempting to pray through. Down payment on the alter, but they keep their stubborn will, they bargain with the Lord so they won't have to pay the bill.
Lights flicker on and off while children play in the loft. They love to play in the barns hay. The wind blows through the children’s clothes.
When kids would sigh when mom would say "It's time to come in for the rest of the day". Whatever you do, don't wish your childhood away cause it seems as if it lasts only a day.
They hedge & balk & argue and try to change Gods will. They want to carry home the goods and not to pay the bill. They want Gods forgiveness' but think they are too nice to be paying restitution though it's included, in the price.

Kill or be Killed By: Timothy Joseph Five close friends are desperately fighting cancer. I’m a survivor only because I was lucky enough to get prostate cancer instead of lung, pancreatic, liver, or others so difficult to battle. The CDC reports that in 2010, 1,575 people died of cancer every day in the U.S., and the American Cancer Society tells us our lifetime risk of getting cancer is one in four, and one in three will die of this dreaded nemesis. When cancer strikes, our battle is kill or be killed. Enough is enough—we must take charge. We walked on the moon, put two rovers on Mars, and accomplished incredible scientific wonders in deep space, and I love it all. If we figured out the incredible mathematics, physics, electronics, propulsion, structural, and communications challenges needed to realize such unbelievable undertakings, could we not tear further into the complex molecular universe of the cell, just as we have the celestial universe, and learn how to kill cancer cells or prevent them from duplicating? Is this too much to ask? We have all seen the expansive control rooms of NASA for space missions. Let’s build a similar one that is digitally linked to every university around the globe, every pharmaceutical company doing cancer research, every hospital with a cancer center, and every government facility doing neutron, radiological, biochemical, cellular, molecular, and every other related field; a mission control center for cancer research. If we could centralize and share that information and use the TITAN supercomputers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), could we not grasp the molecular and submicroscopic universe inside the cell? Since we discovered quarks and leptons, the subatomic particles of protons and neutrons, surely we can uncover the molecular signature of a cancer cell and turn it off.
History of Dream Catchers Long ago when the word was sound, an old Lakota spiritual leader was on a high mountain and had a vision. In his vision, Iktomi, the great trickster and searcher of wisdom, appeared in the form of a spider. Iktomi spoke to him in a sacred language. While the spider spoke, he continued to weave his web. When Iktomi finished speaking, he gave the elder the web and said, ”The web is a perfect circle with a hole in the center. Use the web to help your people reach their goals, making good use of their ideas, dreams and visions. If you believe in the great spirit, the web will filter your good ideas and the bad ones will be trapped and will not pass.”
Thousands of intelligent people around the world are dedicated to finding the myriad bits of the complex molecular biology of a cancer cell. We have the laboratories, the computer, and the genius needed to uncover the keys to kill or control a cancer cell, and we have so many of the pieces already. The answers are right in front of us, we need only the coalition, a mission control room, and a new Manhattan Project to reveal them. So how can we make this happen? Someone please come to the rescue.

Racing Tires First, it is important to understand that tires have had more impact on racing speeds than anything else over the past 50 years. The improvements made in tire development have led the way to more new track records than most anything else. Even increased horsepower only helps when you can hook it to the track through the tire. Lighter components have been effective in increasing speeds by decreasing total car weight and even further, by reducing unsprung component weight that helps with traction during acceleration and cornering but all of those improvements are trumped by the tire. Making cars lighter got out of control as parts were made barely strong enough to do the job and very expensive materials like carbon fiber and titanium increased the cost of a part by four to ten times or more. As light weight efforts became extreme, it was easily addressed by sanctioning bodies setting minimum weight limits and material rules. Horsepower gains are always being found and the simplest way to limit them is by limiting cubic inch displacement, and specifying air intake restrictions. But all of the improvements and all the hardware that makes up a race car still funnels through the four patches of rubber that contact the track surface. This is what makes a car move, corner and stop. Think about it ! Everything that is done to the racecar really comes down to making the tire grip the surface most efficiently. Tires are that important. The tire surface -IS- the point where the race car is not hard bolted to the mating surface. Take a minute to really think about it. Everything comes down to the four patches sticking to the track surface.

To prevent ants from walking up an object, such as an outdoor patio table that has one center pole, attach tape to the pole so the sticky side is showing. Ants never cross something that's sticky. Discourage ants in house. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda or powdered borax of cloves on shelves and drawers. Bay leaves also helps. Sprinkle black pepper in cracks and crevices. Deter flies. Place cotton wool balls sprinkled with drops of lavender oil on saucers. Basil or mint grown in pots on windowsill. Bugs at night. Replace your white light bulbs with yellow ones. Insects don't see these colors as well as others so they're not as attracted to the light as they are when white lights are used. Are snails getting to your garden? Sprinkle some white flour around the plants you think are being eaten by the snails and it will get rid of them!

MOSTLY MAN IDEAS Prevent containers of water from building bacteria. Throw a silver coin in it. Even a tub of water for horses will not have bacteria in it if a half-dollar silver coin is in it also. Saves a lot of cleaning! Keep batteries fresh. Refrigerate them in a sealed plastic bag. Stop glue from drying up. Partially used tubes of glue won't dry up if stored in tightly closed jars. Organize all those wires behind your entertainment center. Use a coiled telephone cord! The cords are inexpensive and come in various lengths and colors. Just cut off the ends and wrap the coils around the wires. Cutting firewood. Wait a few weeks after you cut the tree down to start cutting it up. The leaves will draw water out of the wood, giving you a head start on drying it and making it lighter to transport. Does your landlord frown on using nails to hang pictures? If it's a small picture, try Velcro strips with adhesive backs! Put the Velcro on each corner of the picture for the best hold. When it's time to move, take the picture down, wet the adhesive on the wall and peel the strips off. Hammering. If you're hammering into soft wood and you don't want to leave marks, push the nail through a piece of cardboard and then hit it. It's also a good way to avoid hitting your fingers. Another way to avoid hitting your fingers with your hammer. Use a fork to hold the nail in position. Just place the nail between the tines and then hit it. Ladder. If you're using a ladder against the side of your house and you don't want to scratch the paint or damage the stonework put socks over the end of the ladder. Washing your car? Add a teaspoon of vegetable oil to the bucket before you add water and soap. This will help the soap carry away the dirt from your car's paint during the washing process. Are your windshield wipers a little smeary? You can get a little more life out of your wipers by using some fine sandpaper to rough up the wiper blade. Keep your grilling surface in good shape. Scrape it with a stiff bristle brush while it's still warm after every use. No brush? Crumpled aluminum foil will work just as well. Protect the finish of a surface from the pliers' teeth. Save an old leather or rubber glove for lining the jaws of pliers. Remove rust from garden tools. Use wire wool dipped in turpentine. Remove rust on utensils. Rub with cork dipped in olive oil. Rusty metal - rub with raw onion.

Rockwood Memories Rockwood Stars By: Ray Collet Hello Readers, Kendall Morgan (Class of 1951) sent an email recently telling me that he was cleaning out his attic and ran across an old 1947 Rockwood Times. He sent me an article about five boys, (Tom, C.W. and Jack Pemberton along with Bill Long and Tom Davis) from Rockwood, playing for Tn. Wesleyan that some might enjoy reading. Kendall remembers seeing Davis kick the football at the Rockwood field (practice) and said he had never seen anyone kick it as high and deep as he could. Kendall also said that he had watched the five players at Wesleyan a couple of games and Tom was outstanding in both games, one of the best guards that Kendall had ever seen. Here is what the article had to say... FIVE ROCKWOOD BOYS STAR FOR WESLEYAN Rockwood Tennessee, which lies in the heart of the great Tennessee Valley, has always been proud of their football teams and their football players. This year, the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs, who are ranked number two in the nation, as far as Junior Colleges are concerned, have five boys from Rockwood on their squad. All five boys were standouts at Rockwood High School just a few years back. Such stars as Tom Pemberton, Jack Pemberton, C.W.Pemberton, Tom Davis, and Bill Long are now starring for the Bulldogs. Tom Pemberton, who played four years of football at Rockwood and went into the Marine Corps after his completion of high school is now in his seventh year of football. He played one year at Pearl Harbor, and is now in his second year at Wesleyan. He is the only Wesleyan player who has started every game for the past two years. Tom, who lost an arm while in the service, is being highly considered for the Little All-American Team. If he makes this team it will be the first time that a Junior College player has ever been chosen. Tom made the Junior College All-American team last year and it is expected that he will repeat again this year. Tom plays right guard. C.W., who is a brother of both Tom and Jack, is one of the best defensive guards on the Wesleyan team. He has been a standout all year for the Bulldogs, and was a great star last year in the Peach Bowl game at Macon, Georgia. C.W. played three years of football at Rockwood before he entered the US Navy. Jack Pemberton, who is one of the smallest players on the Wesleyan squad, is considered by Coach Hudson to be best blocking end on the team. Jack weighs only 150 pounds, but his spirit is supreme and that is why he is rated as one of Wesleyan's better ends. Jack is also playing his second year at Wesleyan along with Tom and C.W. Jack can be remembered by the Rockwood fans as a good pass-receiving end who played tailback in his last year at Rockwood. Bill Long, who last played for Rockwood in 1941, and who the fans will remember ran wild over Harriman, for the Tigers first win over the Blue Devils in seven years, is now a standout for Wesleyan playing wingback. Bill, who was one of the Bulldogs outstanding backs last year, has been slowed down this season due to an operation which he had last spring. He was late getting out this season, but has been showing his old form. Of the games remaining on Wesleyan's schedule, Long is expected to see a lot of service in all of them. Tom Davis, who can kick a ball a mile, and can also pass and run is one of the stars which shine in the Wesleyan camp. He is said to be one the greatest kickers ever to attend Wesleyan . His long punts have been an important factor in the Bulldog victories. He was at his best in the Carson-Newman game, when he kicked two, more than sixty yards. Davis is in his first year of college ball, and at the rate he is going, he will be a great star before he completes college. There has been times this season when Coach Hudson has all five of his Rockwood players in the game at the same time. No other town can field this many men, not even Athens. The Bulldogs, who played in the Peach Bowl Game last year, and who won the South-Eastern Junior Conference Crown, are out this year for a larger Bowl and keener competition. It is believed by most fans, who have seen the Bulldogs in action this season, that there is no Junior College eleven around this part of the country in their class. An effort is being made by the fans in this section to get the Bulldogs an invitation to the Little Rose Bowl Game to be played at Pasedena, California. And if Wesleyan receives another Bowl Game this year, this school can contribute a part of it to Rockwood. Thanks Kendall for that article. Seems to me that our Vols could have used those guys. I saw Johnny Lawson (Class of 1949) and he still looks like he could start with any team around. I will send out more stories about our teams of the 40's and 50's as I find information on them. Things kids will put up their nose! Crayons - One minute he’s coloring, the next he’s crying. Imagine the shock on one teenage babysitters face when she realized what caused the dried blood on her 2-year-old’s nose: He had stashed in his schnoz a broken piece of a yellow crayon. Blowing gently out one nostril and being carefully prodded with a tweezer proved useless for this little boy, so off to the emergency room he went. Having a “foreign body” (anything unnatural) stuck in an orifice may lead to irritation and infection, warns the National Institutes of Health. Doctors and ear-nose-throat specialists typically treat more severe cases with drainage or suction. Beads - Stringing necklaces can be a great afternoon activity, but some kids take crafts too far. French Fries -Beside a burger is where fries typically sit, but one four-year-old girl had other plans for her potatoes. Greasy fast food can easily slide right up the nasal canal. In this case, a pediatrician was able to carefully extract the fry in the office. However, the inside lining of the nose is fairly sensitive, so doctors sometimes use sedatives or special “tools,” Be wise: Next time you buy your kid a Happy Meal, keep both eyes on the fries. Marbles - It’s all fun and games until someone loses a marble in her nose. But don’t let it cause you to lose your marbles, too. You’re not alone: Curious kids often poke these beautifully colorful spheres up their shnozzes. Round, hard objects like marbles are often the culprit of chaos, she says. Depending on how far up the sphere is lodged, the solution for removing it may vary in intensity. If it won’t come out through gentle nose blowing, consult your physician. Slippery, saucy noodles frequently nose their way up kids’ nasal canals. Although softer, mushier items may seem slightly less uncomfortable to have stuck in one’s nose, they actually can be more difficult to remove. Tweezers and other medical tools have trouble gripping onto slippery substances, so it may take longer to remove. Tissue - Training your kid to use a tissue for a runny nose may give you surprising results. Wadded and wet pieces of tissue can easily cram up your kid’s nasal cavity, clinging to the inside of his nose. Since tissues are meant to be near noses, it’s an easily missed accident. Cheerios - A common finger food to serve your young’un, Cheerios tend to casually creep up noses. In fact, any small, round food particles can easily move from highchair to nostril. Although the rough surface of Cheerios can cause discomfort or irritation, rest assured that this common problem can be easily cured. Once the culprit is removed, your child and Cheerios can continue their happy relationship! Small Toys - Little toys (like Lego's) and small toy parts (like screws) are tempting items to travel up the nose. After all, it’s easy for playtime to get a bit wild! Before buying toys and games for your child, pay attention to the age recommendations, small parts included, and any product recalls you see in the news. Even if small toys and parts don’t end up in the nose, they can create choking hazards. Beans and Peas - Feeding your little guy can be messy. Since half the food falls on the floor, it’s easy to assume the other half makes it into the mouth. Not necessarily. Cooked beans or peas for dinner (or raw ones for crafts) often become prime objects for pushing up one’s nose. Don’t get distracted during dinner time. Losing focus can be easy (“Did I leave the veggies in the microwave again?”), so make sure someone is paying close attention to your tyke during meals.

American Rosie the Riveter Association is trying to locate women who worked on the home front during WWII. Thousands of women worked to support the war effort as riveters, welders, electricians, inspectors in plants, sewing clothing and parachutes for the military, ordnance workers, rolling bandages, clerical, and many other jobs such as volunteer workers collecting scrap metals and other critical materials. These women have stories of their WWII experiences that are of historical value and perhaps have never been told. American Rosie the Riveter Association would like to acknowledge these women with a certificate and have their stories placed in our Archives. The Graduation gift A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealers showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study, told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and how much he loved him. He handed him a beautifully wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with his name embossed in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible behind. Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old. He thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. But before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to him. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. When he arrived at his father's house, sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important documents and saw the Bible, new just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. His father had carefully underlined a verse, Matt 7:11, "And if ye, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Heavenly Father which is in Heaven, give to those who ask Him?" As he read those words, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealers name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words...PAID IN FULL.

Great uses for Tennis Balls
Store valuables. Make a two-inch slit along one seam of a tennis ball, then place valuables inside. Fluff your down jackets or down comforters and reduce static cling. Throw in a handful of balls while jacket is tumbling in dryer. The balls keep the feathers from clumping together so they're spread out evenly throughout the comforter or pillow. Childproof sharp corners of furniture. Cut old balls into halves or quarters and use packing tape to affix the sections over sharp corners, Make parking cars in garage easier. Having a tennis ball on a string from the garage ceiling so it will hit the windshield at the spot where you should stop your car. Prevent a chrome trailer hitch from getting scratched. Slit a ball and put it over the trailer hitch as a protective cover. Make a walker glide more easily. Cut a hole in two balls and fit them on the back feet of the walker. Give yourself a foot massage. Roll your foot over a tennis ball. Remove cobwebs from unreachable places. There was a time when the Fed was merely charged with making sure the value of the nation's money was stable. It failed miserably. So it was rewarded with more responsibility. Its mission moved toward making sure the country had full employment. At that, too, it fails regularly. So, now it has taken upon itself (Congress never authorized it) to hold interest rates down and push consumer prices up. Actual consumers prefer lower, not higher, prices. But such is the hubris of central bankers that they are willing to contradict 100 million households. They insist on dollar earners and savers losing about 2% a year of their buying power. As we have been saying, it is an odd recovery that leaves the average American with less income than he had before it began. But it is an odd recovery that we have. Stock prices – not to mention prices for antique guitars and gaudy modern "art" – have soared. Incomes, meanwhile, have limped downward. This leaves the typical American feeling richer... but with less money in the bank. Here Comes QE 4 At $81 trillion, total US household wealth has never been higher. But it is supported by precious little household income. Economist Richard Duncan, tells us the ratio of household disposable income to household wealth is important. That's because wealth must be supported by income... or it disappears. This is exactly what happened – twice – in the last 15 years. From 1952 until the 1990s, the ratio of household wealth to disposable income was fairly stable – at about 525%. Then it rose above 600% – on two occasions. At the end of the 1990s, before the dot-com crash. And in 2006-07, before the global financial crisis. Today, once again, the ratio is above 600% – for only the third time in history. And once again, we should be prepared for a crash – or at least a substantial bear market – in US stocks. That will probably happen in the third or fourth quarter of this year. And it will probably be followed by an announcement by the Fed that, instead of taking QE off the table, it will continue the program. And instead of allowing short-term rates to rise six months after QE ends, as Janet Yellen suggested in her recent post-FOMC press conference blooper, the target rate will stay at zero for this year... and all of 2015, too. Duncan believes "QE 4" will produce the same results as QE 1, 2 and 3: It will send stocks flying again. If so, we could be looking at another big run-up in the stock market... after, of course, a substantial decline. Our advice: Get out of the US stock market now. A man from Norfolk called a local radio station to share this on Sept 11th, 2003, two years after the tragedies of 9/11/2001.
Senate passes legislation which aims to uphold state’s death penalty statute State Senators voted Wednesday to close a loophole in current law that allows for the state to use execution to carry out a death sentence if a court should rule lethal injection is unconstitutional but does not address what happens if the chemicals used in the fatal dose are not available. Senate Bill 2580, sponsored by Senate State and Local Government Committee Chairman Ken Yager (R-Kingston), allows for the death sentence to be carried out through electrocution if the Commissioner of Correction certifies that one or more of the ingredients essential to the lethal injection dose cannot be obtained through no fault of the department.
His name was Robert Matthews. These are his words: A few weeks before Sept. 11th, my wife and I found out we were going to have our first child. She planned a trip out to California to visit her sister. On our way to the airport, we prayed that God would grant my wife a safe trip and be with her. Shortly after I said 'amen,' we both heard a loud pop and the car shook violently. We had blown out a tire. I replaced the tire as quickly as I could, but we still missed her flight. Both very upset we drove home. I received a call from my father who was retired from NYFD. He asked what my wife's flight number was, but I explained that we missed the flight. My father informed me that her flight was the one that crashed into the southern tower. I was too shocked to speak. My father also had more news for me; he was going to help. 'This is not something I can't just sit by for; I have to do something.'

"But you're 75 years old!" admonished his wife, "Why don't you take my brother along?" "But he's 85 and doesn't even play golf anymore," he protested. "But he's got perfect eyesight. He could watch your ball," she pointed out. The next day Jack teed off with Scott looking on. Jack swung, and the ball disappeared down the middle of the fairway. "Do you see it?" asked Jack. "Yup," Scott answered. "Well, where is it?" yelled Jack, peering off into the distance. "I forgot." The Young Businessman just started his own firm. He rented a beautiful office and had it furnished with antiques. Sitting there, he saw a man come into the office. Wishing to appear the hot shot, the businessman picked up the phone and started to pretend he had a big deal working. He threw huge figures around and made giant commitments. Finally, he hung up and asked the visitor, "Can I help you?" The man said, "Yeah, I've come to activate your phone lines." The Old Family Physician, being away on vacation, entrusted his practice to his son, a recent medical student. When the old man returned, the youngster told him he cured Miss Ferguson, an aged and wealthy spinster, of her chronic indigestion. "My boy, "I'm proud of you, but Miss Ferguson's indigestion is what put you through college." There was a blonde woman that was in deep financial problems, so she got on her knees and prayed "Dear God, please let me win the lottery. Blood in these vessels does not contain oxygen, and the skin distorts the color. Blood is red when it has oxygen and a deep almost maroon color when it carries carbon dioxide. When you take a breath oxygen enters into your lungs. Blood travels through your lungs and picks up the oxygen and turns red. The blood carries the oxygen all over your body to give your cells energy. After the oxygen has been transferred the cells give off carbon dioxide which makes the blood look darker. The blood returns to the lungs so you can breathe the carbon dioxide out. The blood travels in special "tubes" to do its job. When traveling from the lungs to the cells with oxygen the tubes are called arteries. When traveling back to the lungs with carbon dioxide the tubes are called veins. Veins are closer to the surface of your skin and can be seen. The veins you see through your skin appear blue because red light goes through the skin much more easily (and thus more) than blue light. The red light is absorbed, and the blue is reflected. Optical scientists also believe that the eyes see more of the blue color than the red. That's why your skin looks blue. However if you cut yourself the blood quickly picks up oxygen and immediately turns the familiar red color.

• Prevent white paint from turning yellow. Stir a drop of black paint in it. • Stop smell of paint. One tablespoon of vanilla essence to two pints of paint, or add a couple of tablespoons of ammonia to one or two containers of water placed in room. • Remove dirt or lumps from paint. Cut a round piece of window screen to fit just inside the paint can. The screen will sink down into the paint and carry the lumps to the bottom of the can. Remove latex paint from hands. The moisturizers ease paint from skin. • Cleaning paintbrushes. When you clean paintbrushes you generally soak them in water or turpentine, but then the bristles get all bent. Here's what to do. Take a piece of wood and rubber band it to the brush. The stick will touch the bottom instead of the brush and the bristles will stay straight. • Restore dried out paintbrushes. Immerse in hot vinegar. Bristles hairspray, smooth, leave to dry. • Don't have a paintbrush? Take a plastic bag, put it over your hand and then put an old sock over the bag. Now dip your covered hand into the paint and apply it. • It can really be a pain getting the paint out of paint trays! Put the tray inside a plastic bag and then pour in the paint. When the job is finished simply remove the plastic bag and throw it away! The tray is clean and ready for the next paint job! • Keeping track of unused paint. After you finished painting and before you've resealed the can, paint a line on the outside of the can at the paint level. Later this will let you know at a glance both how much paint is left inside and exactly what color it is. • Keep paint fresh between projects. Seal the lid tightly by using a mallet all the way around the lid. Then, with one hand on the lid, turn the can of paint upside down for just a second or two and then turn it right side up again. This will coat the entire inside top surface of the can with a thin film that will help seal the lid. • Spray painting something that's small. Put the item in a big paper bag. You can paint and it won't make a mess! • Redecorating? Record paint or wallpaper identification numbers on masking tape and then stick the tape on the back of a switch plate cover in each room. That way you'll know right where to find those ID numbers. • Make your ceiling seem higher. Paint it a lighter tone than the walls. • Use a primer coat. Your paint will go on easier and will be less likely to fade and chip. Another tip: ask the paint store to tint your primer the same shade you intend to use for the paint. That way you can see how a certain shade really looks on your walls without committing to that color.

Thinking of getting a potbellied pig? Potbellied pigs are very "special" animals. If you understand their personalities, and quirks, they are like two year old children - intelligent, curious, mischievous, and, sometimes manipulative. They are sensitive creatures that can be playful, and even almost humorous. It takes an understanding, firm. and intelligent companion to successfully own one of these intriguing animals. 1. Research the breed and breeders before you adopt. Pigs have special needs and characteristics that are very different from dogs or cats. 2. Make sure you understand the cost and time needed to be a successful porcine companion. Pigs are not small, or easily transportable, and do not belong in apartments, generally. They can be convoluted, or even aggressive. They form close bonds with humans and love to snuggle. They get bored easily, and knock over waste paper baskets and house hold objects, learn how to open cupboards and refrigerators, need a safe indoor and out door environment... And, of course, pigs will do anything for food ! That's where the phrase came from! 3. Learn the Pot Belly personality. Potbellies are herd animals with a strong pecking order. If they are spoiled, they often become territorial, and aggressive towards humans, especially house guests. Pigs have an instinctual urge to be "Top Hog," and defend their territory. Those that receive lots of firm but subtle, daily discipline, and setting boundaries in the home, do not exhibit this phenomena.. The potbellies must be taught the word "NO", and to respect humans. Pigs can learn to scream, to wake their owners for breakfast, beg for food, and raid pantries. They can be demanding, overly sensitive, or even neurotic. They will be very jealous of other pets if not socialized properly. Pigs will often pout if challenged by humans! Their personalities are complex. 4. Learn about training your companion. Pigs are not good pets if left home alone, with no mental stimulation. They are very intelligent and trainable. First, a pig must be taught that it can trust its owner. Firm, gentle discipline works well. Because of their love for food, positive reinforcement is effective. Negative physical reinforcement is not. Pigs have a great memory, and respond well to commands. They are easily housebroken and can learn to do very amazing things when properly taught. 5. Make sure the environment in stimulating enough to keep your Pot Belly engaged, Because of their food obsession they can be aggressive with young children, in their eternal quest for treats, however with the right kind of training, attention, and environment they are steadfast friends and companions.

Control those critters Keep cats off indoor planter. Pine cones in an indoor planter will discourage cats from walking in the dirt and digging holes. The pine cones are uncomfortable to their feet. You can pour water directly over the cones and it won't hurt the plants. The plants also get plenty of air. Keep deer off yard. Use the shishi-odoshi (also called deer chaser, deer scarer, bamboo clacker, or water hammer). This was originally developed by Japanese farmers to scare off deer and boar from crops. As the water flows from the bamboo spout, the knocking portion fills and spills the water creating a rhythmic knocking sound as it hits a rock. You can also try planting some deer repelling fragrant herbs, catmint, chives, garlic, onions, lavender sage, spearmint, thyme, and yarrow. Keep squirrels away from garden. Put dog hair in nylon stockings and hang around garden. Sprinkle loose dog hair around plants. If you don't have a dog, go to an animal grooming place and ask to take their hair. Trash cans. To keep critters away from garbage, mix two tablespoons liquid dish soap, two tablespoons cayenne pepper, and one quart warm water. Spray liberally over trash to keep varmints away.
This formula works by neutralizing the acid in pet urine and killing the bacteria. If you do not know where the urine is, get a black light bulb (most inexpensive) for an existing lamp or hand held black light (available at pet stores for $20 or so.) In a dark room with only the black light on, the urine will glow!
