We knew how to be kids Growing up in Emory Gap was an event all children should have had to experience. We had some of the best, most serious football games in Grandma’s and Grandpa's yard you’ve ever heard of. One of us would be Roger Maris, another Archie Manning, and other heroes I can’t recall. We played touch football, but we played with a heart as if 100,000 Tennessee fans were cheering us on. As soon as darkness took over, the neighborhood kids would gather in front of our house to begin playing Hide and Seek, or Kick the Can. We took these games very seriously, also, and they could take hours to finish. I don’t know how we survived. We would hide in half-collasped sheds, coal piles, under cars, in trees, and under anything that could hide a kid. When the game was over, all the kids would go home, and we’d go in the house and play “Captain Midnight”. Now, this game has mentally warped me, even to this day. I know this is the reason I am terrified of a hand coming after me. We would all get on the bed except one of us, this was “Captain Midnight” . They would crawl under the bed and move around, and try to grab one of our feet or hands. You never knew where the Captain Midnight’s hands would come up, but if he touched you, you had to be the Captain. Terrifying for a 6 year old! Those days of fun, excitement and fear are gone, and will never be repeated. The memories remain, but it’s sad to know kids won’t enjoy using their imagination on fun like that. The only memories they will have of their childhood is laying around or sitting, playing video games and counting how many people they killed on a TV screen.

Celebrities who’ve committed suicide or overdosed in 2013
Famous people who’ve committed suicide or overdosed in 2013 is overwhelmingly high. It must have been a stressful year in the entertainment industry. Up and coming young stars committed suicide at a higher rate than older celebrities. Lee Thompson Young A talented young star whose rise to fame started during his role as Chris Comer, in the movie Friday Night Lights. He also appeared in The Famous Jett Jackson on the Disney Channel. Young committed suicide on August 19, 2013 after battling depression with a gunshot wound to the head. Young’s death was the most shocking because the public didn’t know he was suffering from depression. Gia Allemand A reality TV star who appeared on the “Bachelor Pad” attempted suicide on August 12, 2013. She hung herself with a vacuum cord and later died at a hospital, after being removed from life support on August 14, 2013. She was only 29 years old. Cory Monteith Known for his role in the television show “Glee” died from toxicity (overdose) by mixing heroin and alcohol. Found dead on July 13, 2013. He was only 31 years old. Chris Kelly Kris Kross Known for his days as one of the Kris Kross rap members in 1992, that had almost everybody wearing their clothes backwards, died from an overdose on May 1st, 2013. He was 31 years old. Matt Osborne Aka Doink the Clown died June 28, 2013 after an apparent overdose. Matt Osborne was known for playing the wrestler from WWF back in 1992-1993. Reid Flair Son of famous Ric Flair from the time WWE, died from a drug overdose. Found dead in a Charlotte hotel room by his father on March 29, 2013. He was only 25 years old. Dick Trickle A famous professional driver, named 1989 NASCAR Rookie of the Year, committed suicide by shooting himself. He was 61 years old. Matthew Warren Son of famous pastor Richard Duane Warren, committed suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on April 5, 2013. He reportedly suffered from a mental illness, that later lead to severe depression. He was 27 years old. Malinda Gayle “Mindy” McCready American music star committed suicide on February 17, 2013, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. David Wilson, her boyfriend, committed suicide a month early. She was only 37 years old. Mark Balelo Known for the Storage Wars American reality TV show, committed suicide from carbon monoxide poisoning on February 11, 2013. Two days after being arrested for drug possession. He was 40 years old. As you can see, people with fame, power or money aren’t immune from life struggles. Many young people today, strive to be somebody famous. Ask yourself, would being a celebrity bring more happiness or problems into your life? If they could, how would these stars answer?

Useful and Surprising Facts About Eggs
Circles around the moon always foretell wind from the side where they break, and a remarkable brilliancy in any part of the circle denotes wind from that quarter. The gurnard, a fish found in Florida, grunts when a thunderstorm is approaching. Many drops make a shower. A fog and a small Moon Bring an easterly wind soon. When the moon runs high, expect cool or cold weather. If it is raining when a child is conceived, the baby will be a girl; if fair weather, a boy.
To put it simply: there is nothing like an egg! Eggs are surrounded by more myths and old wives' tales than any other everyday food. Here are some of our useful and surprising facts about eggs. The entire yolk is actually only one cell, one of nature’s largest. In fact, an ostrich egg, which can serve about 24 for breakfast, is probably the largest cell nature is currently manufacturing. The color of the shell is strictly a function of the breed of the bird. Americans consume an average of 281 eggs per year, which keeps about 285 million hens busy day and night. An old fashioned, but valid test for egg freshness is accomplished by gently dropping a whole uncooked egg into a salt solution (two tablespoons salt in two cups of water.) If very fresh, the egg will be full and heavy and it will sink and tip to one side. If moderately fresh, it will remain suspended in the middle of the water in an upright position; if it bobs up to the top, it is stale. Government grades are based on the size of the air cell in the egg, the egg’s quality, and its freshness. A Grade AA egg must be less than ten days old from packing, a Grade A, 30 days. The whitish, twisted material seen near the raw egg yolk is thick albumen, which is part of a layer of dense egg white surrounding the entire yolk. Its purpose is to help keep the yolk centered in the egg. The albumen is especially prominent in fresh, high-quality eggs. The color of the yolk is determined by the feed. If the chicken eats grass, yellow corn, or other feedstuffs rich in yellow pigments the yolk will be deep yellow in direct relation to the amount of yellow in the feed regardless of the breed of chicken of color of the shell. The incubation period of a chicken egg is 21 days. Shortly after an egg is laid, it is placed in front of a light source that reveals the condition of the innards. This process, called candling, can detect cracks in the shell or harmless but unappetizing blood spots on the yolk. It also reveals the size of the egg's air cell: the smaller the cell, the better the egg. Old wives' tales suggest that the shape of an egg indicates the sex of the chick that will hatch from it. Unfortunately, there is no truth to this myth. Scientists are unable to distinguish between the sexes before the eggs hatch. The greenish gray color around the yolk of a hard-boiled egg is a harmless compound of iron and sulfur called ferrous sulfide, which forms when an egg is heated. To prevent its formation, boil the egg only as long as is necessary to set the yolk, and then plunge it into cold water and peel it promptly. Did you know? While brown, white, and green eggs are essentially the same in nutritional value, there are definite preferences by individuals and by people in different regions of the country.
Comets Comets are quite the celestial spectacle. Would you believe that they are simply pieces of dusty ice? When a comet flies close to the Sun, some of its ice turns into a long, bright trail, or tail, of vapor. That tail is a comet's most amazing feature. Most comets are unpredictable. Astronomers can calculate where one will be in the sky, but not how bright its tail will be. Probably the most famous one, Halley's Comet, appears every 76 years—but it doesn't always make a great show. Halley's Comet was spectacular in 1910 and disappointing in 1986. In 2061, it will be large and visible in the Northern Hemisphere. Let's hope that the sky is clear!
Meteors We see meteor showers, or shooting stars, when the Earth travels though clouds of particles left by comets (or asteroids). Since Earth's orbit is virtually the same from year to year, the showers are predictable. A meteor shower appears to originate from a single point in the sky, the "radiant". Meteors seen near the radiant are approaching the observer and will appear as short streaks in the sky. However, meteors seen 45 to 135 degrees from the radiant are moving in a more parallel direction to the observer. These meteors will produce longer streaks in the sky.
Animals and the weather
Observe animals and you'll see that they, too, have their own ways of predicting weather. Here are some animal weather proverbs: * Expect rain when dogs eat grass, cats purr and wash, sheep turn into the wind, oxen sniff the air, and swine are restless. * If the bull leads the cows to pasture, expect rain; if the cows precede the bull, the weather will be uncertain. * When cats sneeze, it is a sign of rain. * When cattle lie down in the pasture, it indicates early rain. * Bats flying late in the evening indicates fair weather. * When horses and cattle stretch out their necks and sniff the air, it will rain. * If the mole digs its hole 2½ feet deep, expect severe weather; if two feet deep, not so severe; if one foot deep, a mild winter. * When pigs gather leaves and straw in all, expect a cold winter. * If sheep ascend hills and scatter, expect clear weather. * Wolves always howl more before a storm.

There it sat on a leaf, catching the sunlight and throwing it back out. Proud of its simple beauty, it was very content. Around it were other dew drops, some on the same leaf and some on other leaves round about. The dew drop was sure that it was the best, the most special dew drop of them all.
Up date on Kylie: When the doctors got inside to perform surgery on Kylie the brain started swelling right away and Kylie had so much scar tissue they had to close her up and couldn't imbedded the device any deeper.. Even though brain surgery is no longer and option the good news is Kylie past her very first hearing test ever!!!! Kylie responded to sound but not voices so after looking at brain they think maybe scar tissue could be blocking the hearing and in a few weeks they will be turning up device. God is still in control and showing us that he is ... Please continue to lift Little Kylie up in prayers .The family really appreciate all the prayers and they know she is a child of God and Kylie will be God mighty warrior for the kingdom when this trial is over because she will help others who have lost hope and she will restore it because her testimony.

The wind rose and the plant began to shake, tipping the leaf. Terror gripped the dew drop as gravity pulled it towards the edge of the leaf, towards the unknown. Why? Why was this happening? Things were comfortable. Things were safe. Why did they have to change? Why? Why? The dew drop reached the edge of the leaf. It was terrified, certain that it would be smashed into a thousand pieces below, sure that this was the end. The day had only just begun and the end had come so quickly. It seemed so unfair. It seemed so meaningless. It tried desperately to do whatever it could to cling to the leaf, but it was no use. Finally, it let go, surrendering to the pull of gravity. Down, down it fell. Below there seemed to be a mirror. A reflection of itself seemed to be coming up to meet the dew drop. Closer and closer they came together until finally... And then the fear transformed into deep joy as the tiny dew drop merged with the vastness that was the pond. Now the dew drop was no more, but it was not destroyed. It had become one with the whole.

Don’t lie to your Doctor Telling a ‘little white lie’ to your doctor can have a big impact on your health. Fibbing about a few things to your doctor now and then isn’t really that big of a deal, right? More than 40 percent of Americans admitted that they’ve lied to their doctor during a checkup. But a little white lie could turn in big health problems. Omitting information, bending the truth or straight up lying can change how your doctor cares for you and the advice she gives you. Here are four things you should definitely tell the truth about: How much alcohol you drink You hear the term “binge drinking” and probably think of crazy college parties, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 70 percent of binge drinking actually happens in adults over 26. Women who drink too much — more than one drink a day — may be at an increased risk of both breast cancer and heart disease. So try to recount honestly all the drinks you typically have in a week (including the large glasses of wine that may equal two drinks) when chatting with your doctor. Besides advice on how to cut down, your doctor can check your liver enzymes to make sure there are no long-term effects that you may be unaware of. Your Mood Do you feel like you constantly have less energy than usual, find little pleasure or interest in the things you used to enjoy or feel down for long periods of time? Even if you think you’re just feeling overwhelmed by day-to-day life or feeling moody, it’s important to discuss even slight mood changes with your doctor. He can assess whether you have depression or another medical condition that can lead to depression, such as a thyroid disorder, so you get the right treatment and start to feel better. Your sex life It’s bad enough you have to get undressed and wear a tiny paper gown, but giving the details about your sexual history can be even more nerve wracking. Some women feel like they have to lie about using contraception or alter their number of sexual partners. And that’s the problem: When you lie, whether outright or by omission — you run the risk of not being adequately tested for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or counseled on how to fully protect yourself against them. STDs, like herpes and HIV, can exist without any symptoms, so making your doctor aware of any possible exposure is crucial so he can test you. Smoking Even if you’re just a “social” smoker — a cigarette or two when you’re at happy hour — or trying to cut down and eventually quit, you’ve got to tell your doctor. Smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease and has even been associated with premature aging. If you smoke, heavy or hardly ever, it’s a part of your health history that is crucial to you how your doctor monitors you. She can also help you enroll in free smoking cessation programs, or possibly give you a prescription nicotine alternative if you are struggling to quit.

GOD'S GIFT OF LOVE
Luke 15:11-24 When my youngest son, Jonathan, was four years old, he said with the joy of new understanding, "Dad, you love me even when you yell at me, don't you?" "Yes, Jonathan," I replied. "Nothing you do can stop me from loving you." Just as my love for my son cannot be shaken, God's love for us never wavers. When we get into trouble, we tend to put distance between ourselves and God. When we especially need God's help, we hide our failure and our hurt (as if we could hide from God!). Because we are embarrassed and angry with ourselves, we assume that God is angry with us too. God's love does not depend on us, on our good behavior or our right decisions. God simply loves us. We are God's creation and God's children, and we are loved - no matter what. Prayer: God, help us to accept your love as a wonderful gift. Amen.

Butter in your coffee?
The latest trend in coffee may boost your energy and help you lose weight. Or maybe you’ll just throw up. Go ahead, put some butter in your joe. Well, not just any butter, and not just any coffee. The butter has to be unsalted and grass-fed, and the coffee beans have to be low-toxin – not the ones you find at the supermarket or Starbucks. The caffeine in normal coffee gives you an initial buzz, but in a while you’ll eventually crash. Lowtoxin Bulletproof Coffee, on the other hand, contains MCT oil – a blend of coconut and palm oil – and has healthy fats that keep you going for hours. But butter is very high in saturated fat, and some health experts caution that it can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. And while this elixir will make you feel full, it’s worth noting that adding the recommended 2 tablespoons of butter to your coffee will also add about 200 calories.

A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger... he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies. If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind. Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.) Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home - not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.. I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked ... And NEVER asked to leave.

If I Were the Devil
In 1965, Paul Harvey did a broadcast titled, "If I Were the Devil." In this amazing broadcast, he spelled out what he would do if he were the devil and his goal was to bring down the United States of America. When you go back and listen to this broadcast, then consider what's happened in the 49 years since, it's astonishing. Here are a few examples: • I'd have drug-sniffing dogs and metal detectors in the schools. The prisons would be overflowing. • I’d take from those who have and give to those who want it until I’d killed the incentive of the ambitious. • I'd get whole states to promote gambling as a way to get rich. • I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashion, that swinging is more fun, that what you see on TV is the way to be. • I'd have people pray, "Our father who art in Washington." Of course, all of this is happening. You might argue the last one hasn't, but you'd be wrong, because the whole point of it is that people come to view the federal government as their de facto god - the source from which they seek to get all things and invest all power. That is exactly what the political left does in this country today. From battles over displaying the Ten Commandments to the explosion in out-of-wedlock births to cities and states becoming dependent on casino revenues to survive (how is that working out, Detroit?), America has followed this blueprint to the letter. We have killed every traditional notion of right and wrong because we don't want to offend people who are doing wrong. They vote, after all! You can't insist on what's right when political power hangs in the balance! Government is our god. And we have killed the sense of self-reliance by putting everything from basic subsistence to retirement to health care in the hands of the federal government. Producers have less incentive to produce because their rewards will be taken from them. Now workers have less incentive to work, and liberals claim this is a good thing! Mr. Harvey saw exactly what was coming and tried to warn us. Apparently the devil felt no need to alter his strategy once Mr. Harvey exposed it, since I guess he realized much of American society would obliviously leave the warnings unheeded. This does not mean the fight is over. I am certainly not done fighting. The future of my grandchildren is at stake. But if we don't want to lose any more generations, we have to stop being so oblivious to what's going on around us. We were warned 49 years ago, after all. How much more are we going to take before we start listening?

A piece of red pepper added to broccoli will help as will a bay leaf added to cauliflower, sprouts, or cabbage. • Fish leaves a smell in the kitchen. To reduce this put a bowl of white vinegar next to the cooker • Baking soda can be used to absorb the smells from bins. Just shake a little into the bottom of a bin liner before it is used to ensure it is odor-free. • Kitchen sink smells can be removed by cleaning the drain out with about 25g salt mixed into around 250 ml of water.

Preheat oven to 375°. Grease and line 8-inch cake tins. Sift flour and salt into a mixing bowl. Melt chocolate in a bowl placed over a saucepan of hot water. In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugar together until fluffy, then beat in the chocolate and mashed potato. Gradually beat in the egg, adding a little flour with each addition. Fold in the rest of the flour and stir in the milk. Divide mixture between cake tins and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until top is firm but springy to the touch. Remove from oven and after a few minutes, turn out on a cooling rack. While the cake is cooling, make the icing. Melt the chocolate as before, stir in the other ingredients and mix well. Use the icing to sandwich the cake layers together and coat the top and sides of the cake. HINT: What makes this rich chocolate cake "Irish" is not only to the creamy liqueur used in the filling, but also a particularly "Irish" ingredient in the cake mixture itself, which makes it extremely moist. Spray Disinfectant Cleaner ½ cup borax 1 gallon hot water Dissolve borax in hot water. Wipe down areas to be disinfected. Abrasive Cleaner Sprinkle baking soda or borax, add juice of ½ lemon and scrub. Brass/Copper Tarnish Remover Salt Flour White vinegar Mix together equal parts salt and flour, then add white vinegar to make a paste. Rub into the stain. Repeat if necessary. Metal Cleaner Fresh squeezed juice of 2 lemons Cup baking soda 1 teaspoon fine salt 6 tablespoons clay powder Mix all ingredients together until pasty. Add water or more clay if needed. Rub paste onto metal with extremely fine steel wool and allow to sit for fifteen minutes. Wash off with a sponge and clear water. Polish metal with a soft cloth. Do not use on aluminum. Glassware/Crystal Spot Removal Dip spotted glassware in water with a splash of vinegar; Dry with lint-free dishcloth. Corned beef and cabbage are traditional foods eaten on this holiday. 9. The shamrock, pot-of-gold and leprechauns are also associated with St. Patrick's Day. The shamrock was worn as a badge on the lapel. Three is Ireland's magic number and the three petals that make up the shamrock are supposed to bring good luck. The three leaves also represent the Trinity in the Christian religion. 10. The leprechaun is a small Irish fairy. He is dressed like a shoemaker, with pointed shoes and hat. He also wears a leather apron. Leprechauns are supposed to be unfriendly little men who lives alone in the forest, spending all of their time making shoes and guarding their treasures. If someone catches a leprechaun, he will be forced to tell where he hides all his pots of gold. However, the leprechaun must be watched at all times. If his captor looks away, the leprechaun will vanish along with his treasure. 11. St. Patrick's Day has become a holiday all around the world and for one day out of the year anyone can be Irish and join in the celebration.

Light Show
Vast glowing rings, called auroras, often appear far above the North and South Poles. These rings can be more than 12,000 miles around. People who live near polar regions see the auroras as giant curtains of shimmering light in a variety of colors. This beautiful effect occurs when charged particles, shot past the Earth by the sun at more than a million miles an hour, are caught in the Earth's magnetic field and funneled to the Poles. When these particles hit gases in our atmosphere, the gases give off light. People in the far northern and southern regions can enjoy the greatest natural light shows on Earth.

Small frogs rained in Serbia, sending residents running for cover. "There were thousands of them," Roane County Skating Center and The Roane Reader have joined a villager told a local newspaper. Deep Sea Jacuzzis
Vents on the ocean floor, more than a mile (1.6 kilometers) below the surface, gush what looks like clouds of black smoke. They're surrounded by a variety of freaky life forms never seen before the first vents were discovered about 30 years ago. These underwater hot springs, called hydrothermal vents, occur when water seeps through cracks in the ocean floor after being heated by magma inside the Earth. The scalding water can shoot back into the cold ocean at temperatures hotter than 700 degrees Fahrenheit (371 degrees Celsius), carrying a black or white stew of dissolved rock and chemicals. Amazingly, these vents support large communities of bizarre sea creatures. These life-forms rely on millions of bacteria inside them to turn poisonous chemicals rising from the sea floor into food.

Imagine you're on an ocean liner when a wall of water ten stories tall races toward you like an unstoppable freight train. It's not a tsunami, caused by an undersea earthquake. Tsunamis are tiny in the open ocean and become enormous—and deadly—as they approach the shore. No, what you're witnessing at sea is a rogue wave, also called a freak wave. Scientists aren't sure what causes these waves, but they do know they can appear without any warning in the open sea, even in the clearest of weather. As recently as 15 years ago these waves were thought to be a myth. But scientists now know they are very real—and very dangerous to even the largest ships.

Gas Attack
When a volcano erupts, a glowing sea of molten lava often flows down its sides, destroying everything in its path. A lava flow is unbelievably dangerous. But a volcano can produce something even deadlier: a pyroclastic flow, which is a cloud of gas and rock that can reach temperatures above 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (537 degrees Celsius). The flow crashes down the side of a volcano like an avalanche. While most people can easily move out of the way of most lava flows, they can't escape a pyroclastic flow so easily. These flows typically reach speeds of more than 50 miles an hour (80 kilometers an hour).
Snowball Factory
You head outside after a snowstorm and see dozens of log- or drum-shaped snowballs. These rare creations are called snow rollers, and Mother Nature makes them all by herself. Snow rollers form when wet snow falls on ground that is icy, so snow won't stick to it. Pushed by strong winds, the snow rolls into logs. Maybe this is nature's way of saying it's time for a snowball fight.
Great Balls of Fire
During a thunderstorm, a glowing ball the size of your head suddenly appears. It hovers a few feet above the ground, drops down, dances across the yard, and then darts up into the air before it fades away. This freaky phenomenon is ball lightning. Sometimes it disappears with a small explosion. Some scientists think that when normal lightning strikes the ground, it vaporizes a mineral called silicon found in soil. They think this silicon forms a kind of bubble that burns in the oxygen around it.

Seasonal Depression
With no sign of winter weather letting up any time soon, it seems there are more people suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) than ever. Seasonal affective disorder, or seasonal depression, usually occurs during the winter when daylight hours are shorter and people tend to stay inside more. People suffering from seasonal depression often feel a sense of being confined to their homes, with no sun exposure due to the cold, cloudy – and in some places -- snowy days. Minimal exposures to sunlight can throw your hormones off balance leading to problems like: Poor concentration Fatigue Decreased serotonin and dopamine levels Low vitamin D Over eating Weight gain

The good news is: There are things you can do to improve your symptoms. First, we need to recognize that this is a real depression and this is quite different than just feeling like you don’t want to go to work. With seasonal depression, you may experience crying spells and a loss of desire to socialize. But before you make an appointment with a psychiatrist to get on antidepressants, there are some alternative remedies that can help. One natural amino acid that is sold over-the-counter, and which has shown some efficacy in treating depression is 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). If low vitamin D levels are contributing to your mood, you may want to try taking 2000 units of vitamin D3 daily. If you suffer from depression normally, seasonal affective disorder can make it worse. So before taking anything, you should speak with your doctor. He or she can test for deficiencies in thyroid hormones or vitamin D levels as these could be contributing factors. Light therapy is another option to increase vitamin D levels and lift your spirits. This is done using a special lamp that mimics natural daylight, which can be placed at your desk while you’re working for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Finally, exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will increase your serotonin and dopamine levels – which are the “feel-good” chemicals released in the brain. Keeping all of this in mind, can help you against the battle of seasonal depression syndrome.

Growing Good Corn
There once was a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. "How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" the reporter asked. "Why sir," said the farmer, "didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn." He is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbor's corn also improves. So it is with our lives. Those who choose to live in peace must help their neighbors to live in peace. Those who choose to live well must help others live well, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others to find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all. The lesson for each of us is this: if we are to grow good corn, we must help our neighbors grow good corn.

On The Road A not-too-bright but beautiful blonde was driving home one night when she was caught in a terrible storm. The hailstones were as big as golf balls, and her car was dented badly. Next day at the auto shop, a repairman decided to have a little fun at her expense. "To fix the dents in the body," he said, "drive home, park the car, and when the tailpipe is cool, get down on your knees and blow really hard into the tailpipe, and the dents will pop out. Later, a girlfriend of the blonde is driving by and sees her friend on her knees, blowing hard into the tailpipe. She asks what's going on and is told the story. The girlfriend laughs. "Well, duhhh! You need to roll up the windows first, silly!" A couple of young tourists are pulled over by a highway patrolman. The officer walks up, asks for the driver's license and registration, and when he doesn't get it quickly enough, whacks the driver in the head. "That's for not having your driver's license ready," he snaps. "I ain't got all day." After he issues the driver a ticket, the patrolman walks around to the other side of the car and whacks the passenger in the head. "Owwww!" hollers the passenger. "What'd you do that for?" "That's to make your dream come true," replied the cop. "I know that when you'd gotten a half-mile down the road, you were gonna say to your friend here, 'Wish he'd tried that with me!'" A banker is proudly driving his brand-new Jaguar sedan around New York City. On reaching his destination, he parks the car at the curb and gets out on the traffic side. Just as he opens the door, a taxicab slams into it, ripping the door right off its hinges. The cabby drives off as if nothing extraordinary has occurred. A policeman who witnesses the whole thing walks up to the banker, who is now wailing loudly, "Ohhh noooooo! Look what that idiot did to my new Jaaaaggguuuaar! The cop looks at the banker, shakes his head, and says, "You bankers are so materialistic! Here you are whining about your expensive car, and you don't even realize the cab tore off your arm!" The banker looks down at where his arm used to be and begins to wail loudly, "Ohhhh nooooooo, my Rolllllleeeexxx is gone!"

The Gatorade Story
Ok, so you probably already know the basics of the Gatorade story, but just to recap: the super-popular sports drink was developed in the summer of 1965 for the University of Florida’s football team at the request of their assistant coach. A team of university physicians set out to determine why the football team kept suffering from the heat, and what could be done to keep them going — short of moving to a cooler climate. The doctors discovered that there were two important causes for the players’ fatigue: first, the athletes were sweating profusely, and as they sweat, they lost important fluids and electrolytes. Additionally, the athletes were losing carbs as they worked out and burned energy. So they started working to develop a new, perfectly balanced drink that would be replace the carbohydrates and electrolytes of the athletes as they sweated under the Florida sun. They called their concoction Gatorade after the school’s team name: The Florida Gators. But Gatorade has had some serious developments since 1965 — including the GIDS, or Gatorade In-Car Drinking System. You’d think that driving a car wouldn’t drain your electrolytes nearly as quickly as running on a field for hours at a time, but it turns out that before they could suck down Gatorade at will, professional race car drivers had a serious problem with dehydration. A system was developed for properly hydrating the drivers: they’ve now got the GIDS, the Gatorade In-Car Drinking System, which was developed in 2001 and is now considered a critical piece of equipment. We’ve uncovered some of the more unusual facts about this super popular beverage — which currently holds 46% of the worldwide sports drink market. Cafemama Gatorade announced that it will be removing BVO, a food additive that is banned in Europe, from all of its drinks in the near future. While studies are not conclusive, some research has found that brominate — a component of BVO — builds up in breast milk, and it has been linked neurological impairment, changes in thyroid hormones, earlier puberty, and reduced fertility. Super Bowl Bets Every year, bets are placed on the color of the Gatorade that douses the winning coach in the Super Bowl. This year, according to oddsmakers, the bet was on a likelihood that the liquid is going to be water – clear is the favorite at 7/2, but orange, yellow, green, red, and blue Gatorade were all still contenders: orange ended up being the winner. Gatorade Shower The first "Gatorade Shower” occurred in 1984, and started after the New York Giants beat the Washington Redskins and coach Bill Parcells took the inaugural dunking. Most Discontinued 26 flavors of Gatorade have been discontinued, including "Iced Tea Cooler," "Frost Alpine Snow," "Fierce Grape," and "ESPN the flavor," making it the brand-name drink that holds the record for most discontinued flavors.

Prevent bra pads from slipping. Use Krazy Glue to attach Velcro to the inside cups of the bra and the outside of the pads. Lessen the pain of minor cuts. Apply Krazy Glue to thin cracks in the skin. The glue deprives the nerve endings of air.

12 things you need to know about NASCAR's new Chase
How do drivers make the Chase?
The 15 drivers with the most wins over the first 26 races get a spot in the Chase as long as they finish in the top 30 in points and attempt to qualify for every race. The 16th Chase spot goes to the series points leader at the end of the regular season.
What if there are more than 16 winners (or 16 winners and a regular-season champ with no wins)? The regular-season points leader automatically gets in Chase. Ties among race winners would be broken first by number of wins, and then by points.
What if there are fewer than 16 regular-season winners? The remainder of 16-car Chase field will be filled by the winless drivers who are highest in points.
What if a driver gets hurt? NASCAR will decide on case-by-case basis if a driver misses a race for a medical condition but has won a race and is still in the top 30 in points. For example, if Denny Hamlin had won a race last year during the regular season, he likely would have been allowed to compete in the Chase.

CHASE FOR THE NASCAR SPRINT CUP BEGINS

What if a race winner fails inspection? NASCAR could determine that any driver who wins a race but fails postrace inspection can’t use that win to either advance to the Chase or advance during the elimination rounds.
How is the Chase broken down? The Chase will have three three-race segments, followed by the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. In 2014, the first round, or Challenger Round, will be at Chicago, New Hampshire and Dover. The second round, or Contenders Round, will be at Kansas, Charlotte and Talladega. The third round, or Elimination Round, will be at Martinsville, Texas and Phoenix.
How do Chase drivers advance from each round? Four Chase drivers, based on points, will be eliminated from each round, but with a key exception — a win automatically qualifies for a driver for the next round and keeps that driver from being eliminated. After the first three races, 12 drivers will advance, followed by eight after six races, and then four.
Will points be reset after each Chase round? After the first round, the 12 remaining drivers will have their points reset to 3,000; after the second round, the eight remaining drivers will have their points reset to 4,000. Entering the final race, the final four drivers will have their points reset to 5,000. There are no bonus points for wins during the Chase as part of the reset.

Rockwood Memories
Old stores in Rockwood By: Ray Collet
Mr. Ray Baird was the owner of the Rockwood Times for a very long time. He wrote this article in 1980 upon his arrival in Rockwood. I would like to share it with you. It should bring back memories about Rockwood's early grocery stores. Mr. Baird writes, "At the time of our arrival in Rockwood on the last Saturday of February, 1941, there were many neighborhood merchants dotted throughout the city and area. While the center of commercial activity was downtown, yet those neighborhood stores were of great convenience and performed many needed services for neighbors, friends, and customers. Best we recall those most prominent around the city and area in the early 1940's included the G.R.Hickey Stores, W. S. Powell Grocery, O.W. Gibson Store, Wheeler Johnson's General Store, U.A. Walker's Store, King Grocery on North Chamberlain, (Mr. Jim King had a larger store downtown) John Kelley's Poplar Street Grocery and McCulley's Market and General Store, which was formerly the Roane Iron Co. and Tenn. Products Commissary. In addition, Lawrence Hembree, Hugh Clark, Rue Walker, Joe Seward and others operated stores at various neighborhood locations and there were several that served the communities of Pond Grove, Eureka, (Mr. Keith's Store) Abel's Valley and Glen Alice. As we went up North Front Ave. there were two busy stores located on opposite corners at the Strang Street intersection. They were the C. W. Gibson and W.S. Powell Stores. Both were well patronized and enjoyed successful operations for many years. Both Mr. Gibson and Mr. Powell were good citizens, property owners, and civic, fraternal, and church leaders. Mr. Powell was a Life Deacon, Treasurer, and held other positions in the First Baptist Church. Mr. Gibson was a devoted Methodist, and was a long-time leader in the Knights of Pythias Lodge. Further up North Front was the "ole time" store operated by Mr. Wheeler Johnson. Boy, that store was really something. In its later years it was written up, complete with photos, by Willard Yarbrough in the Knoxville News-Sentinel in the newspaper's Sunday Feature edition. The Wheeler Johnson Store was where you could buy most anything. All of the old fashioned were there and it was quite an experience to browse around the store and see items such as wash boards, and both wooden and galvanized tube, oil lamps, wash bowls, and pitchers, slop jars, rolling pins, dippers, loose flour, sugar, potatoes, beans, fat back and lard which would be weighed up and sacked for you. All of the old timey items were there for sale. Mr. Johnson's store continued to operate on into the 1950's and 60's as it did in the early days of the century. Mr. Johnson was a Spanish-American War Veteran and also doubled as a city mail carrier. He lived to a ripe age of over 90, but his hair remained a deep black and his step remained steady.. L.D. "Mac" McCulley was a merchant in the old Roane Iron and Tenn. Products area for many years. He was also a leader in local sports activities, particularly as manager of championship fast pitch softball teams. He came to Rockwood from Alabama not long after Tenn. Products Corp. purchased and resumed operations of the old Roane Iron Co. furnaces at the foot of the mountain. Mr. McCulley managed the TPC store on W. Rockwood St. near the furnaces until it burned down. The Martin Manor Homes are now located in the area. After the fire, Mac moved the store across the street, later purchasing it from TPC and operated it as McCulley's Super Market until his death. Many citizens will remember the big tent sales that Mac promoted, erecting tents full of appliances and furniture, plus other merchandise, selling them at greatly reduced prices. Most all of these neighborhood and area stores were supplied by Rockwood's Ingram Company Wholesalers. E.T. Ingram and his salesmen enjoyed close personal relationships with each of the many merchants served. The auto age and the coming of modern super markets, minute stores and shopping centers is causing the demise of the neighborhood store, owned and operated by local people, friends, and neighbors. Both the store and their wholesale supplier fulfilled a great service. In every case, friendship and public service was a vital part of their

operation and we will miss this old fashioned personal relationship." With baseball season just around the corner, does anyone remember the "Rockwood Sluggers?" Talk about a ball team ! Here is an article I found from around 1980. "If Irwin DeArmond was playing ball today, he'd probably be a major leaguer, but Irwin was born 20 years too soon. Back in the years when DeArmond was a star catcher and power hitter for the local Rockwood Sluggers, the color line was still a handicap to talented black players hoping to ever reach the major leagues. The Sluggers, composed of such fine players as Irwin and his younger brother, Clarence, Hense Johnson, Columbus and Charles Siler, Sherman Swan, J. Hugh Swan, Harry Swan, Charles Edward and Gibson Wester and sponsored by Hamm Insurance Agency and the late Mac McCulley, must have been a formidable foe to other teams in the area. "We used to play all of our home games at what is now "Civitian Field" DeArmond recalls, "and crowds of 500 to 600 were not at all uncommon and many times our receipts would be in excess of $500.00. Among the many tough opponents the locals faced were the Chattanooga Choo-Choos, Madisonville Reds, one of their toughest rivals, teams from Alcoa, Oak ridge, Knoxville, and the Cuban All-Stars, a professional black team that traveled through the states and would generally require a flat guaranteed plus a percentage of the gate. Knowing that Irwin was reputed to have fine arm, I asked him the obvious question. "Did many runners steal on you ?" "Not many." In his over 20 years in organized baseball, DeArmond said he kinda lost track of just how any homers he hit, but figures it was around 300." "Ever have an offer from the Negro American League?" (the best professional black league in the country and in which the great Satchel Paige played " I asked. "Yes, but the team was too far away, in Texas and I had a good job at Oak Ridge so I never took it," concluded Irwin. "Finally, your biggest thrill." The big ex-catcher had to think a while on this one. "I guess if I had to pick one, it would be one hot afternoon here at Rockwood." "We were playing a good team out of Oak Ridge and they were ahead in the late innings." " We filled the bases and it was my turn to bat. "I caught a high hard one just right and dove it over the fence for a grand slam home run.." It never happened to me Irwin, and I rather envy you. That kind of thrill doesn't come along very often. I hope this article brings back some good memories of growing up in Rockwood. My three year old daughter had never asked me about my tattoo until last week. It came up while I was changing. She asked me what the picture on my back was and where it came from. I paused. Should I tell her it’s a tattoo or just a picture? Should I mention that it hurt? Should I say I regret it or subtly discourage her from getting a tattoo one day?

One well-publicized case you may have heard of was when Warren Buffett loaned Goldman Sachs $5 billion during the 2008 financial crisis... when Goldman was on the ropes...As part of the loan terms, and to make it an even better deal for Buffett, Goldman gave Buffett warrants on shares of the company. When Goldman's share price recovered a year or two later, it was reported that Buffett made something like $900 million on the warrants—and that was over and above the interest he made on the loan! A Second Letter to America
By watching the daily news one can clearly see that America is getting farther away from God and still headed straight towards God's judgment and ultimate destruction. Too many in America have said "there is no God." One of the many reasons Americans have reached such a low point of unbelief, is because they were brought up in school systems which teaches man's false idea that every living being started from a single cell and evolved into millions, or even billions, of species, including humans. Some have theorized humans evolved from ape like beings. But how a person, who is composed of 200, or 300 trillion highly specialized interrelated cells, can believe that it all started from a single cell, should be beyond belief. Actually, the single cell theory of evolution only proves Man's folly. First, Man totally dismissed God's legitimate claims that he, God, created Heaven and Earth and everything in them including the first man, Adam. Second, Man refused to believe the documented biblical history of God dealing with mankind on Earth, where God again and again, demonstrated and proved his awesome supernatural powers. Among these demonstrations of power, were turning the rivers and waters in Egypt into blood, parting the Red Sea while millions of Israelites crossed on dry ground, and then drowning the very large pursuing Egyptian Army. After that God proved himself again and again by providing food and water for forty years while His chosen people wandered in the desert. In the Word of God the Holy Bible, God showed his chosen people that he had complete control over Earth and the Heavens, because, he wanted them to be witnesses to the rest of the world. He wanted the people of the world to believe in Him so they would not perish. This world would be a much better place if people believed in the living God and followed his just commandments. We would love each other like the brothers and sisters that we are, because, we are all His children. God gets no pleasure in his children going to hell. It is a great tragedy that so many in America are rejecting God and his Son, Jesus Christ, who died for our sins on the cross. Accepting Jesus and his sacrifice is a must to go to Heaven. (NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- This week in Nashville began with the Governor’s State of the State speech where he outlined his budget proposal for fiscal year 2014-15. Governor Haslam proposes a $32.6 billion budget, which is actually $600,000 less than last year. The largest single expenditure in the budget is TennCare which is 30% of the total budget. It is often said that if you can’t manage TennCare, you can’t manage the budget. Therefore we can expect some cuts in the program. My concern is cuts that could be on the backs of the providers, ie, the hospitals and doctors. There are six community hospitals in my district already reeling from loss of funds on account of the Affordable Care Act. I hope that we can spread any cuts across the budget, not just providers. Education takes the forefront in the Governor’s budget proposal. Enough money is appropriated to fully fund the BEP formula. I have introduced a bill to make sure that these funds are equitably distributed to the rural counties as well as the urban counties. The most innovative proposal in the budget is the Tennessee Promise, which aims to boost efforts to reach the 41% of high school graduates who do not go on to some school after graduation. The Governor proposes using money from the lottery reserve to fund an endowment to allow all Tennessee high school graduates the opportunity to go to a community college or college of applied technology (technology center) at no cost to them or their parents. The devil is in the details, of course, but I am excited about this initiative and the opportunity it affords the young people in the 12th district. I look forward to learning about this innovative proposal. The State kept its commitment to Sgt. Alvin C York and Tennessee veterans by keeping York Institute a State Special School. I am assured by the governor that there is no further intention to change this status. The special appropriation to York was reduced, but we will no longer have to make the annual “fight” to save the school. All Senate committees, including the Senate State and Local Government Committee which I chair, will review all departmental and agency budgets in depth over the next month. Our committee will review the budgets for 13 departments and agencies that govern subjects including corrections, human resources, elections, ethics, general services, veterans and the military. Traditionally, the budget is one of the last bills voted on during the legislative session. Local Family Team & Church Team tell why they participate in Relay for Life Team Believers: Our Reason to RELAY The Believers team is a family based team consisting of family members and their friends. The team began when two sisters (Vonda Oran and Debbie Pelfrey) decided to have their own team instead of walking with other teams as a part of Relay. They recruited cousins and friends to join them in the Fight against cancer. Every team member has been affected by cancer through the loss of a loved one to this terrible disease. We decided to do “our part” to work with the American Cancer Society and their signature event “RELAY FOR LIFE” where we can be more involved with people in our community who, like ourselves, were also affected by cancer. We’ve lost our mothers, fathers, father-in-laws, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles and cousins to this disease. I (Debbie) personally vowed to do my part in the fight with hopes that my grandchildren will face a better world with more birthdays, less cancer, & eventually a cure. “Exactly what is it & how does it work?” you may be asking: The money raised through the ACS RELAY FOR LIFE events that are held internationally goes to support programs for cancer patients and research programs across the US for all types of cancer, not just one, all cancers! I hope that someone out there reading this today will decide they want to do their part and help us Finish the Fight! It doesn’t have to take much of your time but you can certainly spend as much time as you like. We have teams from all facets of our community but we need more. I think we have some remarkable members on our team of which seven are survivors, each having their own different stories of having beaten seven various types of cancer. One thing we definitely share in common is our desire to help in any way we can to fund research & find a cure for this disease that affects one out of every three Americans. Let me tell you just a little about our team members: Our pastor is Charles Snodgrass & his wife Ann is a breast cancer survivor. They are working with us & cheering us on. Jonathan, one of our team leaders, has not had cancer, but has survived a liver transplant & experienced first hand critical health needs. Now he is fighting back to help others. Although he works on Sunday, he takes his lunch hour at 10 a.m. so he can come to teach his Adult Sunday School Class at church. Hilda is a colon cancer survivor who now works a full time job & is an active elder at the church serving as Clerk of Session. Jim is our Team Captain, my husband & a 16 year survivor of prostate cancer & I (Trudy) am a 6 year survivor of pharyngeal cancer. Our son Tim & his fiance Heather help make it a family affair. Our church organist Geraldine is also a cancer survivor & lost her mother to cancer. Other members of our team have been touched by seeing close family members lost to it or through their work situations seeing many affected. Wilma, who is the Heart & Soul of our church's “Love Kitchen” lost her mother to breast cancer when she was only a teenager. Jesse is a team member who works on all our church & community programs. Arlene & Sandy both work at the Bridge & are very caring & compassionate to others having worked closely with countless cancer victims. Our goal is to be an active part in fighting back & finishing the fight, realizing there is no finish line till we find the cure & it will take whole communities many efforts to do this, but it can be done! We want to support & honor our families & friends who are fighting their cancer battles today & give them hope. For them & for our children & grandchildren we are proof there is “life after cancer” & by working together to conquer it, someday a cure will be found & no one will have to ever hear those three awful words “You have cancer.” Our three words today is “We've survived cancer” & “We're fighting back!” The first annual POWER OF PURPLE RUN is in the process of being planned. Corn Oil: Prevent Hair balls for Pets
Add a few drops of corn oil to your pets’ food to prevent hair balls from forming. The thick oil helps the fur pass through the animal’s system much quicker and easily. An old straw broom is a great “toy” for cats. They like to sharpen there claws on the sewn part near the handle. Getting fish? If you decide to have a fish tank, explore the varieties of cold water fish that are available. If you decide on exotic fish, be aware that they may need extra-special care. If your pet has extremely bad breath, this might be an indication that it should be taken to the vet for a tooth examination. There could be serious dental or other medical problems. If you are going to take a dog or a cat on a long trip, get your pet used to the carrier/crate before the trip. Put a familiar piece of clothing or bedding in it, along with a favorite toy or two. Is it OK to give dogs real bones to chew? Pet experts say no, because the bones could break or splinter, and the bits could cause serious internal injuries to your pooch. Keep the lid on the trash can! Curious dogs or cats can get into the trash and eat food that could be bad or dangerous for them. Has your cat stopped using her litter box? Maybe they don't like the litter (have you switched brands?) or the box isn't being cleaned regularly. Try getting some new litter and keeping the box clean, and see if that makes a difference.
Showering is easier! For a calmer and easier bath time, make a dog washing station in your shower. Cover the drain with a hair catcher ($3.50 at hardware stores) to prevent fur from clogging it. Cut a hole in a bath mat so it fits over the drain and lay it in the shower to prevent your dog from slipping around. Using a handheld sprayer gives you more control and lets you avoid spraying water into your pet's ears. Everyone involved will find bath day a whole lot more pleasant.
Obese pet? Is your dog getting a little chubby? Try replacing his high-calorie treats with plain rice cakes. Even if you think they're tasteless, dogs go nuts over them and vets often suggest them as a lower fat (and less expensive) substitute for regular dog treats.

PETA wants memorial for chickens An animal rights advocate wants to place a roadside memorial in Georgia to remember several chickens killed in a highway wreck. A member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed an application for the memorial with the Georgia Department of Transportation. If approved, a memorial would be placed at the Hall County site where a truck hauling live chickens overturned Jan. 27th, 2013. Sarah Segal of Atlanta writes in her application that she wants to place a 10-foot tombstone memorial for one month on the right of way of U.S. 129 to mark the deaths of the chickens. The driver of the chicken truck and the other vehicle involved were not seriously injured. (We don’t make this stuff up, folks.)
