University of Tennessee, 2009 Commencement ...Anyway, I know this is a big big day for you. And I never dreamed, never ever ever dreamed that I would be a commencement speaker. Now sing, yes I can do that. No problem, but making speeches I’m a little nervous. Seriously. Nervous, because I know that I am suppose to say something meaningful to you. Maybe some good advice for you to always remember. Now I usually try not to give advice Information, yes, advice, no. But, what has worked for me may not work for you. Well, take for instance what has worked for me. Wigs. Tight clothes. Push up bras. High heel shoes, five inch high heel shoes.... ...Now people are always asking me, what do you want people to say about you a hundred years from now? I always say I want them to say say, ‘dang, don’t she still look good for her age.’ But all joking aside. I think people will remember us for who we were, not how many records we sell, or how much money we make. Because I have always said that I have always counted my blessings far more often than I’ve counted my money....

How To Take Care of Your Garden Hose
A good garden hose should last five to 10 years, but many home owners replace a hose every year or two because of leaks, cracks or rot. How to prolong the life of your hoses… Maintenance…Don’t buy an extra-long hose. The longer a hose is, the harder it is to move around and store, and the more likely you are to yank, twist and snag it. Wherever possible, use a 25- or 50-foot hose instead of a 75 or 100 foot one. Don’t drag the hose by the spray nozzle. Doing so weakens the coupling where the hose and nozzle connect—a major source of leaks. Better: Pull the hose itself rather than the nozzle. Drain the hose at the end of the day. Turning the water off at the spray nozzle does not release built-up pressure. If you leave a hose continuously pressurized for long periods, it can stretch out the inner tube and increase the chance of leaks. Instead: Shut off the water at the spigot, then turn on the spray nozzle until the water is expelled. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight for long periods. The sun’s UV rays can break down the hose’s outer lining and lead to cracks…and water left in the hose heats up and expands, weakening the inner tube. Roll up your hose between uses instead of leaving it in a pile, which creates kinks that can lead to tears and cracks. If you don’t have a hose reel, loop it around the bottom of a large empty trash can that you can lift when you want to free the hose. This is especially important if you are likely to roll over an uncoiled hose with your car or wheelbarrow. Repairing leaks…For pinhole leaks: Clean and dry the area with a rag, and apply a thin layer of rubber cement or the type of glue used to repair bicycle inner tubes. When the glue is dry, wrap the area tightly with self-fusing silicone rubber tape, which stretches and creates a watertight seal. For larger or recurring leaks: Buy a splice repair kit with two slip-on clamps and a brass connector for about $10. Cut out the damaged section of hose with gardening shears. Soak the cut ends of the hose in hot, soapy water to lubricate them. Slip one of the clamps over a cut section of the hose, insert one end of the connector into the hose, then tighten the clamp. Repeat the process on the other section of hose. For leaks at the point where the hose attaches to the spigot: Check the coupler on the end of the hose. If the rubber washer inside is shriveled, damaged or missing, replace it. If the coupler itself is damaged, slice off the hose near the coupler and buy a repair kit with a replacement coupler (about $10). Helpful: Since this end of the hose is especially prone to tugging, which causes kinks and leaks, consider installing a “hose saver”—a six-inch piece of hose that is wrapped in a heavy steel spring with couplings on either end. Cost: About $5.
Best Way to Support You Tomato Plants
Form
Tomato cages, structures that entirely encircle a plant, are the easiest supports to use. There are several variations of cages available, but if you’re going to be growing just a few plants, the easiest cage to find is the ubiquitous, inexpensive, cone-shaped, heavy-gauge-wire "tomato basket." These cost just a couple of dollars each, and in the spring you can find them for sale everywhere from nurseries to drugstores. You simply push the legs into the soil around a young plant, then let nature take its course. As the plant grows and fills the basket, tuck wayward stems behind the encircling wire. But be careful; these 3-foot-tall cones are not particularly stable. Indeterminate tomato vines can quickly grow beyond the top ring of the basket and topple the whole plant. It is best to use determinate tomato varieties with these cages or be prepared to brace them with stakes when the vines get larger.

There are no words to describe your feelings after loosing a friend. This friend was a very special person and everyone who knew her realized how special she was. My friend and I knew one another since 1st grade at South Harriman Elementary School. We were friends all thru school. While in grade school she and I went to the Princess Theater every Saturday to watch all those Westerns, especially our favorite, Roy Rogers. We would stay all day and our parents took turns picking us up. Front: Betty Griffis, Betty Wright We swam together during the summer along with our other friends. We all Back: Darla Smith, Bobby Ruth Thomas attended South Harriman Baptist Church, where we enjoyed Sunday school and training union. Us and all of our other friends would take turns going to one another’s homes and cooked our own supper Front: Darla Smith Cole, Helen Williams Whaley, Linda Whitson Jones and could actually eat the food. Lots of South Harriman students spent many an hour at our friend’s home, dancing, making fudge, and just sitting on her Back: Betty Wright Jenkins, Bobbie Ruth Thomas Mee front porch overlooking U.S. Highway 27, sometimes at slumber parties lots of us girls would stay up all night on tat porch laughing, singing, and being silly. (as teenage girls do). I even spent the Christmas Holidays with the family in Kansas. That was a fun trip, getting to meet all her family. No matter what we were doing, school, parties, movies, dates, ball games, swimming at Roane County park, we always had fun. Through the years, we didn’t see one another as often, I got married, she went to Tech, graduated and started teaching. She got married the next year after I married. Later we all became close again through working with South Harriman All School Reunion project, which in my opinion, she was our leader. She had always planned the reunions for the Class of 1956 and they were always successful and fun. She accomplished so much, loving family, loving friends, and all the students who loved her and she loved them back. Always teaching and caring above and beyond the call of duty. When her health began failing her, it broke my heart. But she always had that wonderful smile and those eyes always bright. I will miss her at our South Harriman Reunion this year, it won’t be the same without her, she never missed. She and I always had our pictures taken together and always laughed at them. If you don’t know who my friend is by now, she is Bobbie Ruth Thomas Mee! We all lost a very special friend but she is in heaven attending a “welcome to Heaven Reunion” and helping plan the reunions as we get there one by one to join her. I love you, my friend. Always, Darla Sue Smith Cole POSTSCRIPT: Monday may 18th, myself and several SHHS Alumni attended the awards program at Bowers. This little girl sitting in front of me, caught my eye. During the ceremony we kept making eye contact, she had the cutest smile, I kept thinking she reminded me of someone. After the program was over, I asked her if her last name was Mee, she said yes, my name is Ali. When I looked into her bright eyes, I could truly see Bobbie Ruth at that age, cute little girl, freckles and all, and then I knew why Ali and I kept making eye contact. I ask Ali if she was in 1st grade, she smiled and proudly said; no, I’m in the second grade. I told her how I knew Bobbie and she grinned. Thank you Bobbie Ruth for letting me meet Ali. Rest in Peace Friend
South Harriman lost another good one Kenny Isham age 71 of Harriman passed away May 18, 2015 at Parkwest Medical Center. Preceded in death by his mother Wanda Isham. Graduated from South Harriman High School and was the chairman of the Alumni and Friends. Served as Sunday School teacher at Johnson Nursing Home for 35 years. Worked for 40 years at ORNL. Published many research papers, text books & scientific articles. He graduated with a degree in Micro & Molecular Biology from the University of Tennessee in 1969 & received a BS degree in 1964 from Lincoln Memorial. A Lab Advisor at School of Bio-Medical Science. A member & Chairman of Deacons at South Harriman Baptist Church & Sunday School Director. He was also a Lay speaker at many funerals. The Hospital Window
Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up... in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.. Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band -he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Days, weeks and months passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate to describe such wonderful things outside this window. She explained the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, 'Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.' Epilogue: There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy. 'Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present.

Household Hints Safely scrub wooden cutting boards. – Sprinkle coarse ground salt over the entire board then use half of a lemon in place of a scrub sponge. The salt will help to loosen stuck on food while the lemon soaks into and cleanses the wood. Safely scrub cast iron. – Using soap and water strips away the seasoning from the metal, causing it to rust. Instead, try scrubbing out your pots and pans with coarse ground salt to remove stuck-on food without damaging the metal. Keep dish sponges sanitary. – Stick them in a binder clip and stand them upright so your sponges stay clean and dry. Keep cutting boards in place. – Put a damp dish towel between the board and counter top. This will keep the cutting board from sliding while you’re trying to work. Safely store knives. – Stick an old wine cork on the point of the blade. Not only will this save you from potentially stabbing yourself, it will also keep the blades from rattling around in the drawer. Put out grease fires. – If you don’t have an extinguisher ready available (which is always recommended) you can use baking soda to put out small grease fires. Reheat bread the easy way. – Don’t break a tooth on rock-hard bread-sticks or pull a jaw muscle on dinner roll-jerky. Drape a moist paper towel over your left-over breads while reheating in the microwave. This will keep them from drying out. Reheat pasta the easy way. – If you’ve ever tried to microwave pasta left-overs, you know that they pretty much only have two temperatures: “still cold in the middle” or “fiery, screaming, tongue-searing hot.” Use this hack to defy the laws of microwaving: Arrange your left-over pasta in a ring along the outside of the plate. (The middle can’t still be cold if there is no middle!) Then all you have to do is check your pasta every thirty seconds or so and pull it out before it reaches stage 2.

Mini Calzones •Making your own stuffed pocket/mini calzone is super easy with canned biscuit dough. Get the fillings of your choice and fold your biscuit around it. Then you just bake it and enjoy. It's just like a homemade Hot Pocket! Mini Chili Bowls •Mini biscuit bowls are a fun and delicious way to serve chili, whether it's freshly made or lunch leftovers the next day. Bake the mini biscuit bowls using the canned dough and then scoop the chili directly into them. They make great appetizers! Donuts •Fry your canned biscuits and make a hole in the center and you've got yourself a tasty homemade donut. They're even better with powdered sugar or frosting, too. The donut holes can be fried and eaten as well. Cobbler •Forget bothering with homemade crusts and use canned biscuits as the crust on your favorite cobbler. You can use your fruit of choice to make an amazing biscuit cobbler. Turnovers •Put a tablespoon of your favorite canned fruit in the center of a biscuit and fold it over to make a tasty little turnover that's perfect for both a snack and a dessert. For this hack, all you have to do is press a biscuit into a muffin pan and fill each with your favorite veggies and chicken soup. Janet Purvis has been contributing to a 401(k) since 1986, when she went back to work after having children. She says she lost more than half her savings in the recent financial crisis, Bob Tonachio then shifted heavily to bonds and missed the stock rebound. “I wish I had known about guaranteed lifetime income options before all this happened!” "I thought I was doing the right thing, and found out otherwise," she says. When she consulted a financial adviser, "I got a report that said, 'You have a 5% chance of reaching your retirement goal'." In her early 60's, she is ready to retire, but if she does that now, "I will have $25,000 to $30,000 a year less than I anticipated having even without further market corrections," she says. To retire at her current standard of living, she figures, she needs nearly twice the savings she has now. She has sold the town house she loved, near the golf course, and moved to a cheaper house. She cut back on vacations and meals out. She adores the theater but hasn't been to a play in at least a year. She works extra hours each week and contributes to her employer's 401(k), with most going to the guaranteed future income option, now that she knows about it. “I am going to probably have to work considerably longer than I anticipated," she says. "It is a nice job but I had not planned to be working well into my sixties or early seventies," she says. "A lot of people are doing that. They need the money." Why have guaranteed lifetime income options been slow to catch on with plan sponsors and participants? Lack of employee knowledge is the chief reason, resulting from a lack of the plan sponsor’s providing sufficient participant education. In the stock-market collapses of 2000-2002 and 2007-2009, many people were over-invested in stocks. Some bailed out after the market collapse, suffering on the way down and then missing the rebound. For investors about to retire it could be disastrous if the market takes 5 to 10 years to rebound. In the 2007 to 2009 collapse mentioned above… The S&P Index lost 53% before hitting the bottom. Not a very pleasant event if one was about to retire and did not have a solid guarantee against loss. Many companies now offer guaranteed life time retirement income accounts that offer a way around the market correction dilemma. The guaranteed “Lifetime Income Strategy” option which provides a guaranteed retirement income floor while allowing participation in future market gains without risk of loss. For those who require income now… a 160 year old provider of lifetime income plans is offering a very special plan. It will actually increase the amount transferred to the plan by 30% and provide immediate monthly income for retirement purposes. If income is not needed immediately the plan will grow until income is needed. The funds in the plan are guaranteed to grow by 45% if income is started in year 3. A confinement benefit of up to 250% of the Guaranteed Lifetime Benefit will be paid if needed for nursing home. We need to study each individual’s needs and develop specific solutions. Jack decided to go skiing with his buddy, Bob. They loaded up Jack's station wagon and headed north. After driving for a few hours, they got caught in a terrible blizzard. They pulled into a nearby farm house and asked the attractive lady of the house if they could spend the night. "I'm recently widowed," she explained, "and I'm afraid the neighbors will talk." "Not to worry," Jack said, "we'll be happy to sleep in the barn." Nine months later, Jack got a letter from the widow's attorney. He called up his friend Bob and said, "Bob, do you remember that good-looking widow at the farm where we stayed?" "Yes, I do." "Did you happen to get up in the middle of the night, go up to the house and spend the night with her?" "Yes, I have to admit that I did." "Did you happen to use my name instead of telling her your name?" Bob's face turned red and he said, "Yeah, I'm afraid I did." "Well, thanks! She just died and left me everything!"

Ridiculed for Government aid At Food Lion grocery store a man standing behind me in the long line snorted ‘Some people!’ ‘You would think the manager of this store would pay attention and open another line,’ said a woman in a irritated manner. I looked to the front of the line to see what the hold up was and saw a very clean and nice looking, young woman trying to get the machine to accept her credit card. No matter how many times she swiped it, the machine kept rejecting it. The annoyed man standing behind me said ‘It’s one of them welfare card things. Dang people need to get a job like everyone else.’ The young woman turned around to see who had made the ugly comment. ‘It was me,’ he said, pointing to himself. The young lady’s face began to change expression. From very red to almost in tears, she then dropped the welfare card onto the counter and quickly walked out of the Food Lion. Everyone in the checkout line watched as she began running to her car. She then got in and drove away. After developing cancer in 1983 and having had to use food stamps, I had learned never to judge anyone without knowing the circumstances of their life. This turned out to be the case today. Several minutes later a young man walked into the store. He went up to the cashier and asked if she had seen the woman. After describing her, the cashier told him that she had run out of the store, got into her car, and drove away. ‘Why would she do that?’ he asked. Everyone in the line looked around at the fellow who had made the ugly remark and pointed at him. ‘I made a stupid comment about the welfare card she was using. Something I shouldn’t have said. I’m truly sorry,’ said the man. ‘Well, that’s bad, real bad, in fact. Her brother was killed in Afghanistan two years ago. He had three young children and she has taken on that responsibility. She’s twenty years old, single, and now has three children to support,’ he said in a very firm voice.
‘I’m really truly sorry. I didn’t know,’ he replied, shaking both his hands about. The young man asked, ‘Are these paid for?’ pointing to the shopping cart full of groceries. ‘No sir, It wouldn’t take her card,’ the clerk told him. ‘Do you know where she lives?’ asked the man who had made the comment. ‘Yes, she goes to our church.’ ‘Excuse me,’ he said as he made his way to the front of the line. He pulled out his wallet, took out his credit card and told the cashier, ‘Please use my card!’ The clerk took his credit card and began to ring up the young woman’s groceries. Hold on,’ said the gentleman. He walked back to his shopping cart and began loading his own groceries onto the belt to be included. ‘Come on people. We got three children to help raise!’ he told everyone in line. Everyone began to place their groceries onto the fast moving belt. A few customers began bagging the food and placing it into separate carts. ‘Go back and get three big turkeys,’ yelled a heavyset woman, as she looked at the man. ‘NO,’ yelled the man. Everyone stopped dead in their tracks. The entire store became quiet for several seconds. ‘Five turkeys,’ yelled the man. Everyone began laughing and went back to work. When all was said and done, the man paid a total of $1,756.67 for all the groceries people had piled onto the counter. He then walked over to the side, pulled out his check book, and began writing a check using the bags of dog food piled near the front of the store for a writing surface. He turned around and handed the check to the young man. ‘She will need a freezer and a few other things as well,’ he told the man. The young man looked at the check and said, ‘This is really very generous of you.’ ‘No,’ said the man. ‘Her brother was the generous one.’ Everyone in the store had been observing and began to clap. And I drove home that day feeling very American.

Abraham sent his servant to seek a wife for his son, not of the daughters of the Canaanites, but from his kindred she would come. So, his servant set out to find her and came to the city of Nahor, and there beside a well of water he called upon the Lord. He asked the Lord to show him the woman for his master's son, and there appeared Rebekah before his prayer was done. She let down her pitcher and gave him and his camels water to drink. As he stood and watched in amazement, he didn't know what to think. But he knew the Lord had answered, and this would be Isaac's wife. And with her family's blessing he promised her a good life. The servant had brought her many gifts with a promise of wealth she would get. So she left for a land where she'd never been to marry a man she'd never met. God has sent His Holy Spirit to seek a bride for His Son. He takes His abode in the hearts of the saved until the last soul has been won. Then one day we'll be presented as the Bride for God's only Son. You will be only a part of that wedding if your heart to Him has been won.

What To Say, And What Not To Say To Someone With Cancer
No matter who it is—a family member, a friend, or even just an acquaintance—when someone you know is diagnosed with cancer, it's easy to become tongue-tied. You want to say the right thing, but what if it comes out wrong? You want to be there for them, but how? And often times, common platitudes and simple remarks can actually be hurtful or misguided. While everyone's experience with cancer is unique, follow this advice on what statements to avoid and what to say instead. Don't say: "I can't stop crying. I was up all night worrying about you." What to say instead: "I feel terrible you're going through this. Feel free to cry with me, to talk, or not to talk. I'll take my lead from you." Don't say: "Just be grateful you don't have (insert another form of) cancer." What to say instead: "Tell me about your (whatever type) cancer, if you'd like. I'd like to know more about what you're going through." Don't say: "You're so strong." What to say instead: "I admire how you're handling this with such grace. Grace doesn't imply that the cancer survivor is strong or weak. It leaves the door open for the survivor to have good days and bad days. Don't say: "At least you look skinny." What to say instead: Pay a genuine compliment, like "Your manicure looks great!" or tell the person how happy you are to see them, and leave it at that. Don't say: "Are you a smoker?" What to say instead: "You don't deserve this," or "I'm so sorry this is happening to you." Don't say: "My friend had the same cancer that you have. Let me tell you all about it." What to say instead: "I think my friend had the same cancer. I know everyone's cancer is different, but would you like me to put you in touch with her?" Don't say: "If there's anything I can do, just let me know." What to say instead: Be specific, with as few decision points or action items as possible for the person. For example: "I'm going to make a meal for your family next week. I'll bring it on Tuesday unless there's a better day. I'm making lasagna unless there's something else you prefer. Let me know if there's anything you don't eat." Don't say: "I know how you feel." What to say instead: "I can't imagine how you feel. Your honesty and vulnerability to admit that this is new territory for you will open the door to communication — and your openness may encourage your friend to tell you exactly how he feels. Don't say: "I've heard that they can cure leukemia with modified AIDS virus cells now…" What to say instead: Ask questions, like "Are you feeling good about your treatment? Are there any new medications or techniques that could be helpful?" Speak to the reality that the patient is facing. Don't say: Nothing. You'd be hard-pressed to find a cancer patient who would rather have a friend not reach out at all than say the wrong thing. Simply put, don't ignore the person. A lot of people are afraid and don't know what to say, but ignoring someone can make them feel isolated or alone. You're much better off saying something. What to say instead: That you aren't sure what to say, but you're there for them — whether they want to discuss it, cry about it, or forget about all about it for a while.

Herman Goddard to be inducted by John Griffin
Congratulations goes out to Herman Goddard of Knoxville, who is headed for the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame. Goddard won his 1st Super Dirt Track event in 2008 at age 72. He was a regular at Atomic Speedway and he won many feature races. The induction dinner will be held at the Convention Center on August 12th with Archie Manning as the featured speaker. Bloomquist Takes World Of Outlaws Win Randy Weaver’s good luck came to an end on May 9th at Smoky Mountain Speedway as the World of Outlaws were in the house. The race was sponsored by NAPA Auto Parts. After time trials were completed, it was Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg setting fast time with Ray Cook being 2nd fastest. The win was worth $10,000 to Bloomquist. Ray Cook had a good 2nd place, with Darrell Lanigan finishing 3rd. In the Crate Late Models it was Cory Hedgecock taking the checker with Jake Teague being 2nd, and Matt Henderson 3rd. The Sportsman Late Models was last to run with Terry Poore taking the win, Patrick Duggan finishing 2nd, and Kip Sawyer coming in 3rd.

Considering a Fixer-Upper? Think About These Things First A property that requires renovations is known as a fixer-upper. For many owners, this purchase has several advantages. In some cases, this type of property can offer an excellent investment opportunity. However, buying a fixer-upper can have a few disadvantages as well. There are instances when renovations can cost more money than the property is actually worth. For that reason, before making an offer on the property, it is important to get the property inspected by an experienced home inspector. The inspector can evaluate the area, the condition of the property, and the extent of the renovations. More importantly, the inspector can identify renovations that are simply minor cosmetic repairs vs. renovations that require major structural improvements. Potential owners should consider the amount of time required to complete renovations. A precise timetable is useful for determining whether property prices and current mortgage rates are likely to increase or decrease during renovations. Owners that are considering buying a fixer-upper should identify all structural renovations. In most cases, major repairs such as electrical and plumbing are expensive. These types of renovations do not increase the value of the property. Moreover, strengthening the foundation and repairing the roof will not raise the value of the property either. These improvements are a major disadvantage of purchasing a fixer-upper; however, they are required to sell or live in the property. For many potential owners, it may be beneficial to weigh the pros and cons of buying a fixer-upper.
Going Over Budget The biggest disadvantage of purchasing a fixer-upper is going over budget. All the COLOR could be removed from this flag, leaving just the outline of the details, and the true message the design sends could still be determined by anyone with a basic knowledge of history. First of all, this flag is NOT the "Confederate Flag." It is the "Battle Flag of Northern Virginia." This design, however, is the one most synonymous with the term, and the one used in various forms on many of the other flags that were flown by the Confederate States. It is also the one most hated by those who are completely and totally ignorant of what it stands for. So take another look at the flag and answer this very simple question : Do you see a big letter "X" anywhere on the flag? What if I were to lay that X down on its side? Do you see it now? The X is formed by the big, blue bands which are outlined with white trim. Now take another look at the flag. On this big "X" there are thirteen white stars. Do you know what these thirteen stars represent? They represent the thirteen original colonies from which the United States began. Each one of these colonies had its own system of self government... until the start of 'northern aggression' when the northern states began trying to usurp authority over the southern states. This was the main cause of the Civil War. Point of note : The thirteen stars on this flag appear to lie on the blue X... but in reality, the X lies on the stars, allowing them to shine through. Now, I'd like to ask you a simple question: Do you remember from your grade-school years how the teachers would sometimes ask you to circle the right answers or picture on a work page, or to put an X on a picture or word or other item that didn't belong in a group? That is the same concept this flag is designed around; the stars are laid out in the pattern of an X, and the blue bands are put on the thirteen stars to show that the southern states no longer wanted to be a part of the union with the northern states. In simpler terms, the message of flag's design is simply this... CROSS US OUT of your Union! The southern states withdrew from the union in a movement called "secession," which led to the Civil War. That is the only message this flag is sending! That is all there is to it! It is just that simple! If this flag actually represented slavery, hatred, white supremacy, or something worse, as so many biased and uneducated people so foolishly believe, then its design would reflect that by incorporating images of those whom it stood against, and there would be a big X on their images. But that is NOT what is on this flag! And that is NOT the message this flag sends! This flag is NOT racist! NEVER has been! NEVER will be! And as I stated earlier, all that people need to have to be able to see and understand this obvious truth is a basic knowledge of history... and an ounce of common sense!

They Survived The Hiroshima Blast You must be thinking, “how could something survive the nuclear blast, so close while everything else died?” The Ginkgo Biloba tree stood less than 2 1/2 miles from the Hiroshima blast and they still stand there today. After they were hit with the nuclear blast, while charred, they soon recovered and have been healthy since shortly after the attack. Contrary to popular belief, these trees show no signs of deformations whatsoever and never have after being examined by scientists. Less than a mile from the origin of the blast, there is a plaque in a memorial garden that states, “After the dropping of the bomb almost all giant trees in the garden were burnt. This Ginkgo is one of the trees that survived. Girth 4 m, 17 m, age about 200 years. The tree toppled because of the blast and the tree was pruned to prevent it from falling over.” A temple was also built around one of the surviving trees that has a plaque stating, “No More Hiroshima” on it. It has also been noted that it is an area for prayer and an international symbol. FOOTNOTE: Japan recently marked the 67th anniversary of the first atomic attack with a ceremony that was attended by a grandson of Harry Truman, the US president who ordered the bomb to be dropped on the city of Hiroshima. About 50,000 people gathered in Hiroshima's peace park near the epicentre of the 1945 blast that killed as many as 140,000 people. A second atomic bombing on August 9th in Nagasaki killed tens of thousands more and prompted Japan to surrender, bringing the second world war to an end.

Males weigh twelve to twenty pounds, with females weighing ten to fifteen pounds. The smallest cat breed is the Singapura. Males weigh about six pounds while females weigh about four pounds. If your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest expression of love your cat can give you. If her tail starts thrashing, her mood has changed --- Time to distance yourself from her. Cats wag their tails when it is in a stage of conflict. The cat wants to do two things at once, but each impulse blocks the other. For example: If your cat is in the doorway wanting to go outside, and you open the door to find it raining, the cat's tail will wag because of internal conflict. The cat wants to go outside, but doesn't want to go into the rain. Once the cat makes a decision and either returns to the house or leaves into the rain, the tail will immediately stop wagging. Don't pick a kitten or a cat up by the scruff of its neck; only mother cats can do this safely, and only with their kittens. Your cat loves you and can "read" your moods. If you're sad or under stress, you may also notice a difference in your cat's behavior. The domestic cat is the only cat species able to hold its tail vertically while walking. There are 6.2 million puppies born in the U.S. every year! In comparison to only 4 million babies born in the U.S. per year, you can give each newborn baby at least one puppy as a birthday gift! Perhaps give the other 2.2 million to friends who don't plan on having any human babies of their own. Sensory - Like humans, puppies are born without teeth. However, they can't hear, see or smell! Puppies don't open their eyes or begin to hear until they're 9 to 12 days old. They can't smell until three weeks post birth. It's important for them to stay close to mom and their siblings to eat and grow properly. Sleeping - Not much is different between human newborns and puppies when it comes to sleeping. The average human newborn sleeps 16 hours in a 24 hour time period, whereas puppies get around 14 hours of shut-eye. Take advantage of his snooze time and cuddle up to your cute furball when you can! Lifestyle - When a puppy is first born, 90 percent of their life is spent sleeping while the other 10 percent is spent eating. Sounds like the life of a puppy is pretty awesome and relaxing! Since a lot of important development and growth happens for the pup during this time, it is important that they get their rest. Sniffing - Let your pup sniff things before you! At 3 weeks old, puppies not only develop a keen sense of smell, but they're also pretty amazing sniffers. The percentage devoted to sniffing smells in a puppy's brain is actually 40 percent larger than humans — and they can smell things over a 1,000 times better than the average human! Feeding - When a puppy is small, he needs to eat five small portions of food a day. Since he was born to nurse (and grazed as he felt necessary), you will need to teach him the proper portion control to avoid gorging his little tummy. As he gets older, he can survive on one to two larger feedings per day. Walking - Puppies grow pretty fast and it takes them a bit of time to get used to their body. Just like when a human is trying to walk, puppies can be a bit clumsy. A bit more common in larger breeds due to their long legs and big paws, puppies are quite the clumsy creatures when they trot alongside you. Social skills - Puppies are in the womb (and born) with a litter. They love to be surrounded by other animals and humans. When they are left alone, they get lonely! Some chase their tails and some look for trouble. When your pup is young, make sure to spend a lot of time with the little guy and put him in sociable situations to ease his transition into being a pet. Chewing - Just like babies, puppies teeth grow when they are chewing. Needing to exercise their new chompers, a lot of puppies will chew anything in site. Don't discipline for chewing, just train them on what's OK to chew (such as their own chew toys and ropes) and what's not. "I'm a big boy!" Even though he may not act like it, a 1-year-old puppy is considered an adult! This is the same as a human at 15 years of age.
Birds Adapt to Radiation
The infamous Chernobyl disaster was the worst nuclear accident in history, with hundreds of thousands of people exposed to potentially deadly radiation. However some birds from the area were found to have actually adapted to the radiation. Researchers found that birds living in areas with high levels of radiation have more glutathione in their blood, which is an antioxidant that helps get rid of highly reactive and damaging molecules created when exposed to radiation. Animals and humans have been seen to adapt to low levels of radiation when exposed for some time, but the birds in Chernobyl were the first to be seen adapting to radiation in the wild. The study also found that as the amount of radiation increases, the level of antioxidants likewise increases, while damage to DNA decreases.
