Roane County Park We had a picnic at Roane County Park for Memorial Day Holiday, and it sure brought back a bunch of memories.

My first memory of the park was when our Sunday School teacher, Charlie Robbins, took all his class to the park for a cookout.

He built a fire and we roasted wieners over it. They were soooo good.

Of course, 48 years ago, there wasn't much at the park, just one or two old picnic tables and a fire pit.

Today, the park is the pride of Roane County.

Recent County Executives, County Commissioners, park employees, and the park board have put so much time, money and effort in making the park a showplace, and a showplace it is.

There's dozens of picnic tables, garbage cans, sheds, several playgrounds, tennis courts, a swimming area, volleyball area, disc golf, a ball field and a beautiful walking trail.

The magnificent maintenance of the park makes it a beautiful place to go play or just to go sit.

Family reunions are a must at the park. I remember the Lemons' had a reunion there, and of course, it was raining. The rain didn't stop the kids from playing and Sandra's son John, about 16 years old at the time, decided he'd ride on the merry-go-round. Needless to say, he was slung off and rolled like a pig in the mud. We all laughed our heads off.

But seriously, if you've not been to the park in a while, go. It will bring back so many memories as you just sit and look around at the beauty of Roane County.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

Best cartoons of the 50s and 60s

These words have been used many times by those being abused by name-callers and accusers as a defense against the hurt which accompanies such. The sad thing is, it really doesn’t help. It hurts to be the subject of the cruelty of thoughtless people - no matter how many of these jingles and rhymes one might recite.

However, there is a way to deal with the hurt which will soften the pain some, or, at least help one to endure it. Permit me to suggest the following: 1) Consider that the name-caller has a problem and pity him.

2) Add this person to your prayer list. Jesus said; "Pray for them that despitefully use you," (Matthew 5:44).

3) Remember that Jesus was also the victim of name-calling (Luke 7:34). This makes him qualified to understand the hurt you suffer, (Hebrews 4:14-16).

4) Remember that calling someone something doesn’t make it so.

Those who take name-callers seriously demonstrate that they have more confidence in the judgment of the name-caller than they do in themselves.

5) Don’t sink to their level by retaliating or by taking your hurt out on someone else. Take a lesson from your own hurt and refrain from inflicting the same hurt on others.

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof," (Proverbs 18:21). Words can cut very deeply, and scar a relationship severely; especially those words spoken unkindly in making "fun" of another human being. Let’s be sure our words are uplifting and strengthening in nature, or keep silent.

If you are around my age, (early 60s) you'll remember the old Saturday morning cartoons. Here's a list of my favorties. Do you agree?

Deputy Dawg It debuted in 1960 and was produced by Terrytoons. The character was a Southern deputy sheriff who dealt with stereotypical southern events. His sidekicks were Ty Coon, Muskie the Muskrat and Vincent Van Gopher. The show became so popular that some of the cartoons were shown in movie theatres.

Huckleberry Hound First showed up 1957-1958, The Huckleberry Hound Show was syndicated. In 1961, it won the first Emmy award given to an animated show. Huckleberry Hound was a blue dog with a Southern drawl. His signature was singing a bad version of “Oh My Darling, Clementine.”

Fred Flintstone It was based on Jackie Gleason’s character on The Honeymooners, Ralph Cramden. Actually, the entire Flintstones show is said to be based on The Honeymooners. Fred’s full name is Frederick Joseph Flintstone. The Flintstones ran on ABC TV from 1960 to 1966. It was basically aimed at adults and was the first to do so. Of course, the kids all loved it too.

Tom & Jerry The Tom and Jerry cartoons go back to the 40s when they were produced as animated shorts. They showed up on television in 1960. Several series’ were produced spoke and the cartoons involved Tom and Jerry lived together in the same house; Tom (the cat)was always trying to catch Jerry (the mouse) and was constantly outsmarted.

Yogi Bear Yogi Bear first appeared on The Huckleberry Hound Show in 1958, by 1961 he had his own show. He became one of the most popular cartoon characters ever produced by Hanna Barbera. Yogi and his sidekick Boo Boo bear lived in a cave in Jellystone Park. Yogi was always on the lookout for picnic baskets but was usually thwarted by the park ranger.

George Jetson The show debuted in September of 1962. Surprisingly, since it seems to have such a foothold in the public imagination, it only ran until March of 1963 producing 24 episodes. A second series was produced in the 1980s. The show was basically a space-aged Flintstones. George lived in a high-rise apartment with his wife Jane, his two children Elroy and Judy, robot maid Rosie and dog Astro. The show was about George and his family and their lives in the 21st century.

Bullwinkle He first appeared on the Rocky and Friends cartoon series in 1959; the show was later changed to The Bullwinkle Show because of the popularity of the character. Bullwinkle and Rocky (the flying squirrel) lived together in Frostbite Falls. He was seen as simple and rather dumb, but he usually ended up getting ahead of the game. The show is almost more entertaining as an adult than it was as a child. The humour is so full of puns and satire that you can’t help but laugh at it. Bullwinkle’s main rivals were Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale; characters based on Russian spies.

20 USES FOR EPSOM It is a good source of magnesium and has dozens of household uses. Here are some favorites: 1. As a relaxing Magnesium Soak – Add 1 cup of epsom salt to a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes.

2. Splinter Removal- Soak in concentrated epsom salt water to pull out a splinter.

4. Better Vegetables- Add a tablespoon of epsom salt to the soil below a tomato plant to boost growth.

5. Facial Wash- Add a pinch of epsom salt to your usual face cleaner (or to your oil cleansing routine) for a skin exfoliating magnesium boost.

6. Tile/Grout Cleaner- Mix equal parts of liquid dish soap and epsom salts and use to scrub tile and grout.

Rinse well for a streak free shine.

7. Body Aches- Add 2 cups of epsom salt to a warm bath and soak for at least 20 minutes to help relieve muscle sprains and for a transdermal magnesium boost.

9. Water House Plants- Help house plants grow by adding a couple tablespoons of epsom salt to the water when you water them.

10. Volumizing Hair Mask- Combine equal parts of conditioner and epsom salt and leave on hair for 20 minutes. Rinse well and let air dry for thicker hair.

11. Foot Soak- For a concentrated magnesium boost, add 1 cup of epsom salt to a hot foot soak and soak for 20 minutes.

15. Beautiful Roses- Add a tablespoon a week to the soil around rose bushes before watering for faster growth.

16. Soil Prep- Before planting, we add a few bags of epsom salt to the soil in the garden and water in to help replenish soil magnesium levels.

17. There's evidence that soaking in a soothing epsom salt bath may help relieve headache.

18. Smooth skin- Mix 1/2 cup epsom salt with 1/4 cup olive oil and scrub skin in the shower for healthy and smooth skin.

19. Itchy Skin or Bug Bites- Dissolve a tablespoon of epsom salt in to 1/2 cup of water and cool. Spritz on itchy skin or apply a wet compress to help relieve itching.

20. Minor Sunburn Relief- Use the same ratio in the itchy skin relief above and spritz on to minor sunburns to help soothe them.

There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before.

What are the causes of hiccups?

Experts are not sure what the mechanisms are that cause hiccups, or why they occur.

According to studies and feedbacks we receive at Medical News Today, the following circumstances, conditions and illnesses have been associated with a higher risk of developing hiccups: •Hot food has irritated the phrenic nerve. The phrenic nerve is near the esophagus.

•When there is gas in the stomach, which presses against the diaphragm.

•Too much food is eaten.

•Food is eaten too rapidly.

•There is a sudden change in temperature.

•Fizzy drinks are consumed.

•Some people get hiccups after eating spicy foods.

•After eating dry breads.

•Many people anecdotally report hiccups after consuming alcoholic beverages.

Looking for a cheap way to give children a fun-filled, week-long experience this summer?

The Salvation Army has a summer camp experience for children that doesn't cost a thing, according to Bob Lepsig, a board member of the Roane and Morgan Counties Salvation Army Service Unit.

Parents in Roane and Morgan counties have until 5:00 p.m., Friday, June 14th to return completed applications for their child to attend the free summer camp the week of July 1-6.

The camp is for children ages 7-12. Camp Paradise at Dale Hollow Lake is on 400 acres of woodland, on the lake near the Kentucky and Tennessee state lines.

About 200 children from various parts of Tennessee and Kentucky will be there that week. There will be approximately one staff person per four children.

Campers do not need to bring spending money. Snacks and drinks are provided twice a day, plus meals. Additionally, each camper receives a Canteen Card to purchase items. All campers are given a T-shirt at the end of the program.

Bus transportation to and from the camp is also provided, departing from and returning to the United Way building in Midtown.

The camp includes a modern dining hall, Olympic-size swimming pool, pontoon boat rides and fishing areas, biking trails, athletic fields, volleyball and basketball courts, and an arts and crafts facility. The group cabins are equipped with showers, toilets, comfortable bunkbeds and dressers.

On the Fourth of July there will be a fireworks display.

Standard Operating Procedures for a cookout We are about to enter the BBQ season. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion: (1) The woman buys the food.

(2) The woman makes the salad, the vegetables, and makes dessert.

(3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill.

(4) The woman remains outside the three meter exclusion zone.

Here comes the important part: (5) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL. (6) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.

(7) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is looking great.

He thanks her.

(8) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN. (9) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table.

(10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

And most important of all: (11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

(12) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed ' her night off ', and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women.

What to do with empty medicine bottles

Antacids - How many times have you reached into your purse for a chewable antacid tablet, only to find the last one stuck to the bottom? Somehow, that fuzzy, lint-covered over-the-counter antacid seems less than appetizing. If you store that opened roll of Rolaids, Tums or other antacids in a prescription bottle, you will always find a fresh tablet when you need it.

Bandages - Most adhesive bandages fit nicely inside, and the container will keep these first-aid necessities clean and dry. Keep some in the car, as well as the bathroom and kitchen cabinets.

BBs and Air-Gun Pellets - They are ideal for storing those BBs and pellets. The child-proof lids will keep the contents securely stored, although you will still want to stash the bottle in a safe spot - out of sight and out of reach.

Beads - Crafters and jewelry makers may find these bottles particularly handy for storing beads, clasps, hooks and other beading supplies. By using several bottles, crafters can keep beads and adornments sorted by color, size, style or other criteria.

Bobby Pins - Hair clips and bobby pins fit easily into the bottles.

Instead of digging through vanity drawers for hair pins, why not keep them secure?

Breath Mints - Once opened, breath mints or rolled candies may tumble out of their packaging into a backpack, handbag or pocket.

Prevent sticky messes and fuzzy candies by keeping these treats in a medicine bottle?

Buttons - Often, store-bought garments come with tiny packets of spare buttons or snaps. Keep these extra fasteners in an empty bottle, so you will know exactly where to find them, if one should pop off of your favorite apparel.

Cash - Store an extra $20 or two in an empty pill bottle in the glove compartment or door cubby of your car, just for emergency use.

Christmas Tree Light Bulbs - Boxes of new Christmas tree lights usually include miniscule packets of spare light bulbs and fuses.

Tuck these into an empty bottle, and stick this in the Christmas ornament box for easy access when you need new bulbs or fuses.

A Father's Eyes

Jonathan's mother died when he was very young and his father brought him up. Both of them shared a very special relationship. Jonathan loved to play football and his father made sure that he was always there to cheer his son at every match, even if Jonathan wasn't a part of the playing team. Jonathan being small sized, wasn't allowed to play in the main team. Nevertheless, he continued with his practice with full determination. Everyone thought that Jonathan would never be able to make it into the team, though somehow, his determination carried him through. The coach seeing his diligence and dedication decided to keep him on the roster.

One day during practice, the coach met him with a telegram. Jonathan was shocked to read the message contained in it. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, "My father died this morning. Will it be all right if I miss practice today?" The coach gently put his arm around his shoulder and said, "Take the rest of the week off, son, and don't even plan to come to the game on Saturday." On the day of the game, Jonathan's college team was losing badly to the rival team. The coach and the players had all lost hope when they saw Jonathan coming towards them. Jonathan ran up to the coach and pleaded him to allow him to play this match. At first, the coach wouldn't allow him to play. However after a lot of persuasion, the coach gave in. No sooner Jonathan joined the team in the field, their scores started to improve before both the teams were on a tie.

However, the real cheer came during the crucial closing seconds when he intercepted a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown. His team members were ecstatic. The crowd came running towards him to celebrate the win. After the match, the coach went up to Jonathan, who was seated alone in the corner of the locker room and asked, "Kid, I can't believe it. You were fantastic! Tell me what got into you? How did you do it?" He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said, "Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?" The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, "Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to show him I could do it!"

Take a piece of wax, a morsel of meat, a handful of sand, a pinch of clay, and some wood shavings and put them on a fire. The wax melts; the meat fries; the sand dries up; the clay hardens; the shavings blaze. Although they are subjected to the same fire, each of the objects reacts in a different way.

This is a dramatic reminder of how individuals also react differently to the same circumstances. Subjected to hardship and despair, one person grows stronger, while others weaken or wither away.

One person hears the Word of God and is made better. Others hear the same message and grow angry and rebellious. Let us take heed how we respond to circumstances in our lives.

Obituaries

BILLY J. LEACH April 20, 1932 - May 22, 2013

Billy J. Leach, age 81, of Kingston passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013 surrounded by his family and friends. He was born April 20, 1932 in LaFollette.

Mr. Leach was a member of Central Baptist Church in Kingston where he served as a faithful deacon for many years. He was also a United States Army Veteran who served his country proudly during the Korean War. He retired from TVA and had over 58 years of carpentry experience. JUNE 8th Cruisin' in Harriman is held the 2nd Saturday through the summer from 3:30 - 7:00 pm in Historic Downtown Harriman.

1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.

2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.

3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.

4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.

5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

The Mayonnaise Jar A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and fills it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “YES”.

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - God, family, children, health, friends, and favorite passions. Things, that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car. The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.” he said.

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “There is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you...” he told them.

“So... pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Worship with your family. Play with your children. Take your partner out to dinner. Spend time with good friends. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the dripping tap. Take care of the golf balls first -- the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled and said, “I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.”

Homemade ice cream in a baggie 2 Tablespoon sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla extract gallon-sized Ziploc bag

1 cup half & half (or light cream) 1/2 cup coarse salt or table salt pint-sized Ziploc bag

Mix the sugar, half & half and vanilla together. Pour into a pint-sized Ziploc baggie. Seal it tightly. take the gallon-sized bag and fill it up halfway with ice; pour the salt over the ice. Now place the cream filled bag into the ice filled bag and seal. Seal it tightly and start shaking. Shake for 5 minutes. Open the gallon-sized bag and check to see if the ice cream is hard, if not keep shaking. Once the ice cream is finished, quickly run the closed pint-sized baggie under cold water to quickly clean the salt off the baggie. Open the baggie and pop in a spoon.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes HATTIE SHILLINGS

Chicken and Dumpling Casserole

1/2 stick of butter 2 cups chicken broth 2 chicken breasts, cooked and shredded 3 teaspoons of chicken granules (I use 1 teaspoon black pepper Wylers) 1/2 teaspoon dried sage 1 can cream of chicken soup 2 cups whole milk 1/2 teaspoon of salt or more to taste 2 cups Bisquick Preheat oven to 350. Layer 1 -In 9 x 13 casserole dish, melt 1/2 stick of butter. Spread shredded chicken over butter. Sprinkle black pepper and dried sage over this layer. Do not stir Layer 2 - In small bowl, mix milk and Bisquick. Slowly pour all over chicken. Do not stir.

Layer 3 - In medium bowl, whisk together 2 cups of chicken broth, chicken granules and soup. Once blended, slowly pour over the Bisquick layer. Do not Stir. Bake casserole for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Cheesy Corn & Bacon Bake

2 tablespoons butter 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons flour 2 cups milk salt & pepper

Hot sauce, to taste 3 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 1-1/2 cups Cheddar Cheese, shredded

2 (15-ounce) cans sweet corn kernels, drained 8 slices cooked and crumbled bacon

Heat oven to 375°. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; then add garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Whisk in flour, cook for 30 more seconds. Gradually whisk in milk until mixture is smooth, season with salt & pepper. Switch to a spatula and cook, stirring constantly, until sauce is thick and bubbly, about 10 minutes. Stir in hot sauce. Add cream cheese and stir until smooth, add Cheddar and stir until smooth. Add corn and bacon and stir to combine. Pour mixture into buttered 1-1/2 quart baking dish; bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Cornbread Stuffing Cups

1 (8.5-ounce) package cornbread mix 1 teaspoon dried parsley 5 tablespoons butter, divided 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1 small onion, chopped 6 ounces (2 links) spicy chicken 2 ribs celery, chopped or turkey sausage 1 small apple, peeled and chopped 1 cup chicken broth salt and pepper Preheat oven to 325°. Butter 2 baking sheets. Cut prepared cornbread into 1/2 inch cubes; spread out on baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until cubes are golden brown and toasted, mixing halfway through. Set baking sheets aside; cool slightly. Increase oven to 375°. Melt 4 tablespoons butter in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions, celery and apple. Season with salt, pepper, parsley and thyme; sauté until mixture is tender, 5-6 minutes. Remove sausages from casings, add to skillet and sauté until no longer pink, breaking apart as they cook. Transfer sausage mixture to large bowl; add toasted cornbread cubes and enough chicken broth to moisten cornbread, but not make it soggy, up to 1 cup.

Liberally butter muffin tin. Mound stuffing into cups, pressing to pack. Bake for 10-13 minutes, or until golden brown on top. Let cool 10 minutes in muffin tin; run a sharp knife around the outside and pop out stuffing cups.

Penny Pinchers  As your light bulbs need to be replaced, switch from normal incandescent bulbs to fluorescent light bulbs.

The bulbs will cost a little more in the short run, but they last up to 10 times longer, and use 2/3 less energy to provide the same light.  Sometimes there's a store brand of the same cleaner that may work just as well for a fraction of the cost. The store brand of the household eraser was 40% less expensive than the name brand, and they are identical.  Manufacturer's websites often have coupons to entice buyers to try their product. Grocery stores and drug store alike print coupons in their sale papers. Look for sales on items you normally use and buy extra if the price is right.  Disposable items are handy, but they can quickly eat up a household budget. To save money, pick items that can be reused. Microfiber cloths are a great choice for cleaning, dusting, and scrubbing.

Instead of disposable mopping pads, pick a good reusable mop and take care of it.  There are a lot of ingredients around your home that can be used to make great cleaners at a fraction of the cost. Vinegar is a great all-purpose cleaner. Baking soda is gentle enough to use as a mild abrasive in many areas of your home. Lemons have a natural bleaching ability. Making your own cleaners can be a great way to cut cleaning costs.

SAVE YOUR DRYER SHEETS!!

They don’t even have to be new dryer sheets. In fact, used ones from the dryer work even better. No additional cleaner nor tons of elbow grease is necessary, even for the messiest situations!

Dryer sheets removed the ring on my toilet with a gentle swipe and left behind pleasant scent, which is a nice thing in the bathroom.

In fact, it worked so well I used separate sheets to clean my toilet and bathtub and grabbed more for the guest bathroom.

A third sheet polishes up the faucets and chrome in a snap! The fibers in dryer sheets and the weave create a grime-grabbing scrubbing tool that won’t scratch sinks and tubs.

Get sticky dust right off of furniture, blinds and baseboards.

Cleans up cooktops and greasy cupboards.

Soak paintbrushes in warm water with a dryer sheet and watch the paint come right off.

Clean dead, icky bugs from the car.

Wipe pet hair off of clothes and furniture.

Run over thread before sewing to keep tangles away.

USES FOR OLD WADING POOLS At the end of the summer, when your hard plastic wading pool develops a crack, turn it into a sand box. Add more cracks or holes in the bottom for drainage and add sand.

A large hard plastic baby pool makes a great container for cleaning up leaves and yard debris. Punch 2 holes in the side and run a rope through to make a handle so you can drag it around.

We do not have a place in our backyard to plant a "regular" garden, but we did have room on our patio deck to do something. I came up with an idea for a small garden using a child's plastic swimming pool. I poked holes all over the bottom for drainage, added fertilizer and soil, and planted tomato and pepper plants. I did the same thing using an old plastic barrel-cut in half lengthwise for basil, cilantro, and radishes.

More Great use for salt * Cleaning copper pans – Remove stains on copper pans by salting area and scouring with a cloth soaked in vinegar. * Cleaning coffee pots – Remove bitterness from coffee pots by filling with water, adding four tablespoons of salt and boiling as usual. * Remove lipstick marks from glassware – Before washing your stemware, rocks glasses, or water tumblers, rub the edges with salt to erase lipstick stains. * Removing onion odors from hands – Rub fingers with salt moistened with vinegar. * “Sweetening” containers – Salt can “sweeten” and deodorize thermos bottles and jugs, decanters and other closed containers. * Whipping cream and beating egg whites – By adding a pinch of salt, cream will whip better and egg whites will beat faster and higher. * Keeping milk fresh – Adding a pinch of salt to milk will keep it fresh longer. * Cleaning sink drains – Pour a strong salt brine down the kitchen sink drain regularly to eliminate odors and keep grease from building up. * Preventing mold – To prevent mold on cheese, wrap it in a cloth dampened with saltwater before refrigerating.

THE SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY WHERE AFFORDABLE RETIREMENT BEGINS

When I was ten I had two newspaper routes: the Knoxville Journal and the Knoxville News Sentinel. Two of my good friends, Tommy Castleman and Kenneth Haun, who were my competitors, also had paper routes. We were always trying to outdo each other by increasing the number of our customers and selling extra papers at a couple of the restaurants in town. It was always first come, first served for each of us. I had several route customers and each weekday morning I sold papers at the Harriman Cafe. I always sold out, as the cafe was an early morning stopping place for employees working at nearby Oak Ridge.

Once a year the district circulation manager and head route carrier, Robert E. Harris, rewarded those who won the highest sales contest with a trip to Knoxville. I always won the contest, which included a Trailway bus trip to Knoxville. The bus went through Oak Ridge and all window shades had to be closed tight. Little did I know that Oak Ridge was a top-secret area and passengers on the bus were prohibited from looking out the closed shades while driving through. Once I arrived I was met by a newspaper employee who took me to the Barnum & Bailey Circus followed by a tour of the Knoxville Journal publishing plant. That night the district route man provided the return trip to Harriman from Knoxville. The return home required me to sleep on top of the bundles of newspapers in his heavily packed car. Our stops to drop off papers included Whitley City and Pine Top, Kentucky; Oneida, Sunbright, Wartburg, Oakdale and finally Harriman where he dropped me off so I could deliver my papers.

This was quite a journey for a young lad.

Across the street from the bowling alley and behind Farnham’s Hardware I had a part time job at the bicycle shop. The owner would occasionally give me parts from damaged bikes and before long I had sufficient parts to build my very own bike. It had a slightly bent frame, bent wheels and spokes, a torn seat cover and no fenders, no brakes, no light, and no handle bar grips; but, it was all mine and it didn’t cost me a penny.

The bicycle made delivering newspapers a lot easier and faster. One early foggy morning I was delivering papers near the old Highway 27 and Margrave Street. There was a graveyard in this area and it was quite scary to me. While delivering newspapers I decided to take a shortcut along side the graveyard. I was speeding down a small hill through the yard of one of my customers and heard an eerie, moaning sound. I speeded up and to my surprise I ran into a low hanging clothesline in the yard. The impact knocked me off my bike but without hesitation I picked myself up and ran with my bike all the way down to Margrave street. After that I never did take shortcuts near the cemetery.

Harriman had a nice bowling alley located at the corner of Devonia and Queen Streets. At the age of twelve I was one of the few hand pinsetters. Back then automatic pen setters were unheard of. Each heavy wooden pen had to be set up by hand. Pen setters would also have to roll each bowling ball back to the bowler. One evening I wasn’t paying attention and just as I was placing a bowling ball on the grooved roller a ball I had sent back up the roller happened to return and the two balls slammed against my left hand middle finger-“ouch!” The owner, “Red Wyrick” was responsible for my acquiring a social security card. I still have my old laminated card.

One of my favorite working places was the small cafe one block from my house. The owner allowed me to wash dishes for my lunch. I was so short I had to stack three of the wooden soft drink crates in front of the wide steel sinks so I could reach the dishes.

My salary for two hours work was a huge bowl of the best chili in town and a bottle of Dr. Pepper with the famous “10-2-4” logo stamped on each bottle.

Rockwood Memories THE IRON MEN By: Ray Collet Several readers have asked me to reprint the information that I have about the Rockwood Football Team, "The Iron Men." Most of us remember the names of the players, but here is a little more information

about the game.

The "Iron Man" stunt pulled by Rockwood on a Friday night in the early 50's may rank as one of the greatest events in Rockwood's football history. Our beloved Tigers only played eleven men and won a game from a tough team in the Spring City Bulldogs. Defeating Spring City was a feat in itself, but with only eleven men during the entire game was something else. Several fans thought the Tigers could hold them on even teams until the fourth quarter and then the Bulldog reserve power would begin to tell.

However, it was the opinion of most of the fans that the Tigers were better in the fourth quarter than at any time during the game.

During the huddle on fourth down when the play that scored was called, "Dub" Roberts remarked after calling it, "OK, PeeWee , here's your chance to be a hero." And he was, because it took the effort of a determined ball player to hold on to that ball with a Spring City defender trying desperately to knock it from his arms. It wasn't a spectacular catch, it was a remarkable catch. Had the ball been in his arms, and no one around, it's just possible he may have dropped it. Records will show that more passes are dropped when there is no one around the intended receiver.

Earl Hampton, a rugged Spring City tackle put on a fantastic performance. Had it not been for Hampton, the Tigers could have kept control of the ball most of the game. Rockwood's line play was superb when the chips were down.

Coach Reeves Derryberry was picked by two of the daily newspapers as Coach Of The Week. He had been pointing to this game all season long and it was possibly the greatest victory in the long and colorful coaching career for Coach Derryberry. And if ever a coach deserved the honor as Assistant coach of the Week, Tom Pemberton deserved that honor. He predicted the week before the Spring City game that " We would win it." Coach Pemberton said that this was, without a doubt, the greatest victory in his then three years of coaching.

Spring City made 12 first downs during the game, but nearly every one was made between the thirtyyard stripes. When they drove inside the Rockwood 20, the going became nearly impossible. Evidence of that was in the fourth quarter when a penalty gave Spring City a first down on the Rockwood 15. Four plays later they had lost two yards. This was only the second defeat suffered by Spring City during their last 36 games. Spring City gained 220 yards rushing, while Rockwood managed to get only 51, and only three first downs. Longest run of the game was made by "Putt" Smith, who during the first quarter ripped off one for 30 yards. Rockwood was rated a 13 to 20 point underdog. The Tigers went into the game with a determined effort to come out with a victory. Not once did they ever quit, relax, or rest for just one play.

It was the gallant play of "Eleven Iron Men" who pulled what was thought impossible and left the Rockwood fans cheering and the Spring City rooters speechless.

For three quarters the Bulldogs made first downs in the middle of the field, once driving to the Tiger five-yard line, only to fumble and have an alert Tiger pounce on it and stop their drive. That was as far as they got. Rockwood played it safe, punting sometimes on second and third down, passing only three times, letting Spring City control the ball, hoping for a break. It came with less than two minutes to play but the break was made by Rockwood. "Dub" Roberts punted 58 yards out of bounds on the Spring City two-yard line. For two quarters the Tiger kicking game was held in check by a strong wind, but in the fourth quarter, it came time for the Bulldogs to punt into the wind and their kick traveled only 25 yards.

"Dub" Roberts took the ball from the center, pitched out to "Putt" Smith who tossed it into the end zone where "PeeWee" Anderson and the Spring City defender battled for what seemed a lifetime. The rest, everyone knows.

Coaches Derryberry and Pemberton used only eleven men during the entire game, a feat unheard of in football. Four or five men playing sixty minutes of football is rare in football now, but having "Eleven Iron Men" is one for "Ripley's".

The "Eleven Iron Men" consisted of Tommy Greene, Thurman "PeeWee" Anderson, Jim Payne, David Poole, Jim Barnes, Jimmy McNelly, George Fulmer, "Putt" Smith, Billy Joe Leffew, Bill Kirby, and "Dub" Roberts.

Hats off to the fine players who truly have a place in Rockwood's Hall of Fame...

Who invented Father's Day? Father's Day, contrary to popular misconception, was not established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards.

In fact when a "father's day" was first proposed there were no Father's Day cards!

Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.

The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington.

At about the same time in various towns and cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate a "father's day.".

In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. Father's Day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are all honored on Father's Day.

What is Flag Day?

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.

The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.

History of Salt Most people probably think of salt as simply that white granular food seasoning found in a salt shaker on virtually every dining table.

by: PETE SEMANICK My first thought was to see the Fire Chief at the local fire department about my need for a flight. When I entered his office I immediately recognized him. We had attended Firefighting School together at Lowry AFB, Colorado some years before. After he heard my plight we went to an office in the aircraft transportation area, and fortunately for me there was a C-130 flight within the hour.

Little did I know that this particular flight would land at all the bases in Thailand with the exception of U-Tapao. It was called the milk run. I soon found out that landing at NKP Air Base would be very exciting. As we made our long approach the aircraft started doing strange wiggling motions. After landing I asked the crew chief about the maneuvering of the plane. He said the pilots were taking evasive action because the Viet Cong were firing at the aircraft.

We finally arrived at Don Muang Air Base in Bangkok and I was able to get another flight on an Army C - 7 “ Caribou”. Once on board and airborne I looked around and to my surprise boxes of live ammunition were stored under each bucket seat. Landing at U-Tapao was a real relief as I didn’t feel comfortable sitting on “kegs of dynamite”.

I have many fond memories from my year in Thailand: we had a wonderful ocean beach, USO shows, various sports activities and I was even was able to obtain a rod and reel for fishing. Some memories were not so fond. Driving my open sided jeep through the jungle one day on a dusty road a large cobra snake suddenly decided to cross just as I passed its position. Thankfully, we missed each other.

Snakes were everywhere. While driving through the construction area one morning I noticed five or six men around a banana tree pulling on something. As I got closer I saw that it was an extremely large python snake with its tail wrapped around the tree.

The men were trying to get it loose so they could transport it to a more isolated location.

Another time in the construction area where large contractor trucks were busy at work, I noticed a body along the side of the road and called it in to operations. My call was returned with the following information: “that body has been there for some time, don’t touch it or even go near it”. I later learned the custom was that when a non- local was killed, someone from his or her part of the country would have to come and claim the body. What a strange custom.

I was intrigued by other customs as well. I learned it was not polite to cross your legs around Thai Nationals because this made them feel inferior if their feet were not even with yours. A man and woman could not hold hands in public, but it was okay for two men or two girls to hold hands.

Time passed rapidly and before I knew it I had my stateside assignment. I would soon be on my way to Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona. My replacement arrived and I was able to depart a couple of weeks earlier than planned. It would be so good to get back home after a long year in such a remote site.

From the pilot during his welcome message: "We are pleased to have some of the best flight attendants in the industry... Unfortunately none of them are on this flight.

An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile, and give them a "Thanks for flying XYZ airline." He said that in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally, everyone had gotten off except for this little old lady walking with a cane. She said, "Sonny, mind if I ask you a question?" "Why no, Ma'am," said the pilot, "what is it?" The little old lady said, "Did we land or were we shot down?"

Part of a Flight Attendant's arrival announcement: "We'd like to thank you folks for flying with us today. And, the next time you get the insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you'll think of us here at US Airways."

A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead is good and therefore we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax -- OH MY GOD!" Silence followed and after a few minutes, the Captain came back on the intercom and said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm so sorry if I scared you earlier, but while I was talking, the flight attendant brought me a cup of coffee and spilt it in my lap. You should see the front of my pants! A passenger in Coach said, "That's nothing, he should see the back of mine!"

the only Politically Correct Disease

By: JERRY LEMONS Why is AIDS treated special, when cancer, heart disease and diabetes kill many more people than AIDS? It's a fact that the federal government spends much more money on AIDS research than it does on cancer research. Why? I assert that the AIDS lobby has been more effective in soliciting funds from the federal government than cancer, heart disease or the diabetes lobbies.

AIDS is treated like a horrible tragic disease, when cancer, heart disease and diabetes are taking second place.

The strongest proponents of AIDS treatment and research are what I call "stars." They are for the most part, rich, famous and liberal in their outlooks and beliefs. They are behind the funding that has made AIDS the number one disease in the world.

AIDS blankets, walkathons, and commercials are just some of the means that the stars have spread the message that AIDS is the most horrifying and tragic disease known.

But just one of the problems is this: the United Nations has lumped together a group of diseases, such as tuberculous and pneumonia, under the AIDS umbrella, so that some diseases that have nothing to do with AIDS are treated as AIDS-related.

The United States, much more than any other nation, has contributed hundreds of billions of dollars in the fight against AIDS, refusing to see that many other diseases have been included in the AIDS umbrella.

But I return to the question: Why is it that such special treatment has been given to AIDS research--a disease that for the most part is behaviorlly-induced--when so many other diseases kill many more people?

The only answer I can give is that AIDS has been selected by the stars as the number one disease. It doesn't matter to them that cancer, heart disease and diabetes have killed many more people than AIDS. Why this is so escapes me. Perhaps the reader will be able able to enlighten me.

I leave this with the statement that I made in the titles: AIDS is the only politically correct disease. I wonder why.

Harriman - Back in Time

By: Mack Daugherty Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s in Harriman was so much fun. There were so many stores and shops.

You could spend hours just looking at all the things the city had to offer.

Living on the south end of Roane Street and walking home from school on a summer day was such a treat. What young boy doesn’t like new cars? There was and still is a Ford dealership. Down the road was a Chevrolet and Pontiac dealership on the right. You could check out all the new models as they came in.

There was Miller and Brewer, Draper and Darwin clothing stores, and Edwards shoe store also on Main Street. You could buy everything you needed at these stores to wear.

You could spend hours in the five and dime stores. There were three stores that were considered the 5 & 10 stores and they all had candy counters with fresh candy you could buy by the pound or less. If you had a little change left over from school the double dipped chocolate covered peanuts were so good.

There were so many toys you had to stop by every day just to see them all. The matchbox cars were so cool, again young boys loved cars and some never grew out of their love for cars. I love cars still today.

Harriman had three drug stores; Acme drug had a soda fountain and Chase drug, which is still in Harriman today had a soda fountain were you could also buy food such as hamburgers. The neat thing about Chase Drug was that they had small juke boxes at each stool were you could put in a nickel and play your favorite song while you ate your banana split or burger.

Yes Harriman had a lot to offer. I remember The Harriman Hotel across the street from Norris Creamery.

Harriman also had “Clean Up, Paint Up, and Fix Up, Day”. The school kids got to tour the Norris Creamery and see how the milk was processed. Jack’s Cab and a barbershop were in town too.

Of course one of the best places was the Princess Theatre, which has now been newly renovated back to the way it looked when I grew up. Movies, popcorn, and candy; now that was fun! Living in the south end of Roane Street was good because you had access to anything you might need. It was just a short walk to the Easy Way grocery store if you needed milk, bread, or maybe a coke; the Patton Hotel and behind it was the Harriman Hospital. There were also two hardware stores, Tennessee Hardware and Farnham Hardware if you needed any items for repairs.

The Bell Telephone Company was right behind the Easy Way store. They had live operators at the telephone company to assist with your calls.

Harriman was a great place to grow up in with all it had to offer downtown. There’s one thing that hasn’t changed about Harriman and that is all the great people who live here now and grew up in the past. It’s like one big family. Take some time to go to a ball game or some other sporting event and you will see what I am talking about.

Today we still celebrate our town when we have “Hooray for Harriman”; all these events remind us of what a great city we had then and still have today.

Sheriff's Office Range Facility Progress

By: Deputy Bobby Anderson The range facility is coming along nicely and is almost complete.

Work on the classroom portion of the range continues.

The electrical service has been installed and we hope to have the water and sewer installed soon pending budget approval.

Installing the utilities will be one of the final steps before the classroom facility can be used. This project has benefited the Sheriff's Office by giving us a facility that allows for flexible scheduling and within close proximity to other training sites. We expect our firearms training program to excel due to this facility.

This facility will also allow the Roane County Sheriff's Office to meet the growing demand for handgun carry permit classes and be utilized by the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency for public hunter education.

Meet Your County Commissioners This month: Nick Forrester

Nick Forrester serves as your County Commissioner for the 6th District (Kingston). Nick was elected to office in August of 2010.

Nick graduated from Roane County High School in 2003 and continued his studies at Roane State Community College, finishing his degree in Political Science at East Tennessee State. He is currently working on his MBA in Management Strategy. Although a graduate of ETSU, Nick is a BIG ORANGE fan through and through.

Nick is a life - long resident of Kingston growing up in the Lawnville area. His parents are Pete and Tracy Forrester and are two of his biggest supporters along with his wife Christy. He and Christy have been married for 3 and ½ years and are expecting their first child this summer.

Nick works at Roane State Community College and is very passionate about secondary and post-secondary education. He says working at Roane State feels like he’s come home. He recently finished the CTAS Certified Public Administrators Training Program.

He feels that learning about local government makes him a more prepared leader for Roane County.

Among Nick’s heroes are George Washington “because he had no other sense of what politics or the presidency were and essentially made the presidency what it is today”, and Babe Ruth because “he was the greatest baseball player to ever live and gave a lot of what he had to needy children.”

A letter to God

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words: Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls.

I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note: Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away.

Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find. I am wherever there is love.

Miracles Happen

A little girl went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet.

She poured the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even.. The total had to be exactly perfect.. No chance here for mistakes.

Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall's Drug Store with the big red Indian Chief sign above the door. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention, but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter.

That did it!

'And what do you want?' the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice.. I'm talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven't seen in ages,' he said without waiting for a reply to his question..

'Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,' Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. 'He's really, really sick....and I want to buy a miracle.'

'I beg your pardon?' said the pharmacist.

'His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?'

'We don't sell miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can't help you,' the pharmacist said, softening a little.

'Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn't enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.'

The pharmacist's brother was a well dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, 'What kind of a miracle does your brother need?'

'I don't know, 'Tess replied with her eyes welling up I just know he's really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can't pay for it, so I want to use my money..'

'How much do you have?' asked the man from Chicago .

'One dollar and eleven cents,'Tess answered barely audible.

'And it's all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to.'

'Well, what a coincidence,' smiled the man. 'A dollar and eleven cents-the exact price of a miracle for little brothers.'

He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said 'Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the miracle you need.'

That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neurosurgery. The operation was completed free of charge and it wasn't long until Andrew was home again and doing well.

Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place.

'That surgery,' her Mom whispered. 'was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?'

Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost.....one dollar and eleven cents...plus the faith of a little child.

Home Remedies

Hurricanes in the Bathroom and other Seasonal Issues By: Debra Carpenter

The pressure is officially on. Now that I’m done with college until August, I have no excuse to be a sub-par mother or wife. Not that I ever needed an excuse. Laundry better get caught up. The house ought to be spotless. My child should be potty trained and reciting Shakespeare.

And dinner should have 4 courses. It’s worth mentioning that potato chips do not count as a course—I know, I was shocked too!

Obviously, this super-mom thing is going to eat up a lot of my time--time that I have daydreamed about spending any way I want. This means my desire to lie motionless by the lake, bathed in the warm, soft heat of the springtime sun is completely impossible. The closest I can get right now is lying relatively motionless beside the bathtub, bathed in the water that splashes (pours) over the edge while my daughter has her “bath�, also known as the Bathroom Hurricane.

There is a similar phenomenon that occurs in the rest of our house, which we refer to as the Toddler Tornado. These tornados are tricky, because unlike real tornados, you get zero warning before it happens (aside from the loud yelling and sound of expensive toys crashing to the floor). The position you were taught to curl into during a tornado is completely useless during a Toddler Tornado—the child will just sense your fear and weakness, and we all know what toddlers do when that happens. They pounce. Just like flesh-eating predators, only scarier.

With my summer To-Do list growing every day, I figure I’ll need some assistance. I can’t do it all alone, right? Wrong. My husband has figured out how to get out of doing most household chores by being really terrible at whatever he attempts to help me do. When he washes dishes, plates mysteriously break, and baked-on food stains are treated like honored guests in our home. Instead of removing them (and subsequently seeming like he is good at washing dishes), he welcomes them with open arms.

When my husband, a former sous chef, makes dinner, it’s natural for me to expect a gourmet meal that is perfectly cooked and tasty. But one thing I’ve learned in life is that expectations of perfection in the home (or anywhere, really) are rarely met. Case in point, my 5 star chef hubby can’t seem to bake a DiGiornio frozen pizza without burning it to a crisp. I have to tell myself that he just isn’t used to our oven; maybe it’s not calibrated properly. This makes the perfectly cooked frozen pizzas I make in the very same oven a real mystery.

It might seem a bit ridiculous to ask my nearly 3 year old daughter to help me with laundry. After all, she is really much better at getting clothes dirty than cleaning them. But because of this, I have learned to make her natural destructive tendencies work for me instead of against me. For example, she has a habit of opening a drawer and throwing every item inside it onto the floor. This is obviously an annoying habit.

However, when laundry is involved, I can make it work for me. I just have her throw all of the clothes in the basket into the washing machine.

She feels like she is destroying something, and the clothes get washed. It’s a win-win situation!

Don’t let your husband or children get away with skirting the household chores—even if all the whites in your laundry turn pink, or the carpet has more dirt on it than it did before they “vacuumed.�

Find fun ways to channel your child’s destructive habits into helpful ones, like I mentioned with the laundry. Try letting them throw stuffed animals at the ceiling fan to clean the dust off the blades (just make sure you put a sheet down first—this is an important step).

Before you go, just remember to always—wait, what? Oh, that’s my husband calling for me in the kitchen. The Godfather of newsletter writers, Richard Russell, writes that we are witnessing amazing times and unprecedented events. Russell also discusses the US dollar, bonds, the Fed, and what will make the gold market head for the skies.

Richard Russell: “We are living in amazing times. These are times that have ushered in unprecedented events. For instance, did you know that the Dow has risen on 21 of the last 25 weeks? On top of that, borrowing (margin debt) is at a near-record high of $346 billion (the record was $381 billion in July, 2007). Never before has there been so little cash in money market funds relative to stocks and bonds. Last week the yield on Barclays US high yield index fell to a record low 4.97%, the first time it has ever fallen below 5%. The whole situation can be described in one sentence -- the search for yield has reached almost insane levels. The question -- have investors driven certain assets to extremes in height, and have they placed various markets on dangerously thin ice? Are we looking at a collection of new Fed-created super-bubbles?

What's the Russell advice? My average subscriber is not a money manager. Therefore, my average subscriber's job does not depend on his producing income or even profits.

My preference is to sit with cash and gold. True, the purchasing power of cash is going steadily down. This must be bothering the Fed. What's the Fed's response? Easy, just lie about the rate of inflation. Or change the CPI. Actually, according to yesterday's Financial Times, the Fed is considering tapering off on its monthly buying of $85 billion worth of bonds and mortgage-backed securities. So again, I say, let's try to keep it simple. Our job is to watch the US dollar and to watch the Treasuries.

The stock averages are over-bought, over-valued, over-loved and at record highs. Margin debt is sky-high, showing that there is a great deal of speculation built into this market.

The Fed's activities have acted as a “put” under the stock market. If stocks begin to slide, investors are certain that they can depend on the Fed to increase its QE4ever. Our foreign creditors are fed up with the US's increasing debts and deficits. They don't see how the Treasury bonds which they hold will ever be paid off with stable dollars. From the standpoint of our foreign creditors, they are stuck with dollars and Treasuries that are steadily losing purchasing power. This was never a problem when the dollar was readily convertible into gold. But that's history. The problem that our creditors currently face is to diversify their reserves out of Treasuries, T-bills and dollars. This is happening now, but it must be done very subtly and carefully, lest they “break” the markets.

The story is that nobody (our creditors) any longer trusts paper or fiat money. Welcome to the new bull market in real money -- gold. As the dollar systematically loses purchasing power, this impacts the Treasury bonds. If the giant Treasury market starts to fall, interest rates will rise (rates rise as bonds fall), and the whole question of US prosperity comes to the fore. Thus, as write, there are many problems that are brewing secretly and out of the public's sight -- they are problems not normally covered by the newspapers.

The Dow hit a record high on May 10th, unconfirmed by the Transports. Everybody is ignoring the series of non-confirmations. But old-timer Richard Russell takes them seriously. Be very wary and careful as the Treasury bonds fall (yes, they are now falling). Hold GDX and GDXJ and be very patient with them. If the world turns against the fiat currencies (as I think it will), gold will head for the skies.”
