Strawberry Freezer Jam
Crushing strawberries in layers makes it easier *makes approximately 5 half-pints (8 oz) 8 cups of mounded strawberries (about 2 pounds) 2 tablespoons lemon juice 3 1/2 tablespoons Ball Instant Pectin 1 1/2 cup of sugar 1. Crush strawberries to get about 4 cups of crushed fruit. 2. Add lemon juice and stir. 3. In a separate bowl add pectin to sugar and mix well 4. Add sugar mixture to strawberries – stirring for 3 minutes. 5. Add to freezer safe jars – let sit out uncovered for 30 minutes. 6. Refrigerate and use within two weeks or freeze for up to a year. Roane Hosiery
As soon as I turned 18 years old, I went to work in the hosiery mill. Roane Hosiery fed a lot of families in those days. At one time, me, my husband, his dad, his brother, numerous cousins, and four sister-in-laws worked there at the same time. In 1969, the minimum wage was $1.60 per hour. I was so excited to make that much money! That doesn’t sound like much, but you could get a pack of cigarettes for 40 cents back then. In fact, on my first day at work, I looked at the clock, and after I had been working 15 minutes, I thought how fast I had already earned a pack of smokes. I was working there when me and Larry got married. I was also still going to school. Larry got sick and was in the hospital, so something had to give. I was taking one class a day to graduate, and it was American History, I hated it. I didn’t care who discovered Colorado. I didn’t intend to ever go there anyway, so I quit school. I met a lot of good people at the mill. Good, honest people who would do anything for you. Most were good workers, but some were cheaters. They’d pick the best work and leave the worse for the ones who never complained. My job at the mill was to pair hosiery up and inspect them for runs. It was an easy job, but not very rewarding. I got fired from there because of what they considered to be “bad work”. I don’t consider it my fault though. I had noticed the hose had a funny looking line through them (not a run), but they looked fine to me. The boss didn’t agree. That was almost a decade ago. Roane County’s textile industries are long gone. The building remains, and so do the memories of all the hours I spent trying to make my small fortune at such an early age.

Tips for Writing a Eulogy
Basic Outline Eulogies need not be long; the average length is between three and five minutes. You don't want to overwhelm those in attendance by speaking any longer than this. The key here is to be honest with your feelings and thoughts. A eulogy should include: •Introduction •Describe the person's character •Give your personal sentiments •Talk about family and friends left behind •Discuss happier times with the deceased person; •Close with a memorable song or poem include anecdotes and real-life experiences (avoid anything that might be considered offensive or vulgar) You should always draft a copy of your speech and, if possible, rehearse it in front of someone. Make sure you print a copy of the eulogy and give a second copy to someone who can act as a backup in case you get sick or are overcome with emotion. Ideas for Content Don't try to write the eulogy in the order that you'll give it. It's easier to begin by jotting down your thoughts about various aspects of the deceased's life. Think about the following points and see if anything springs to mind. If it does, write that now, and then you can put things in the order you want them later. •A short introduction about yourself and relation- •List of achievements •Favorite songs or poems ship to the person who died •Information about hobbies or interests •A brief biography of the deceased person •Personal stories or anecdotes •Information about his or her career •Remarks about his or her family, friends and pets •Memories from years gone by Delivering the Speech Funerals and memorials are very difficult times. It's okay to cry and share your emotions while delivering your tribute. However, don't try to memorize your speech. It's best to keep your notes in outline form or on note cards for reference to help you stay on track and to ensure that you cover all of the key points that you plan to bring up.

The pastor’s family was invited to dinner at the Olson’s home. Mrs. Olson was widely known for her amazing contributions to church potlucks. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. As usual, it was a feast for the eyes, the nose, and the palate. When the pastor’s youngest son, Peter, received his plate he started eating straight away. ‘Peter, wait until we say grace,’ insisted his embarrassed father. ‘I don’t have to,’ the five year old replied. ‘Of course you do, Peter,’ his mother insisted rather forcefully. ‘We always say a prayer before eating at our house.’ ‘That’s at our house,’ Peter explained, ‘but this is Mrs. Olson’s house, and she knows how to cook.’

Honey Mustard Grilled Chicken 1/3 cup Dijon mustard 1/4 cup honey 2 tablespoons mayonnaise

Easily slice cookie dough. – Use the same trick as for soft cheeses. A piece of unflavored dental floss will slice right through dough . Preheat the grill for medium heat. In a shallow bowl, mix the mustard, honey, mayonnaise, and steak sauce. 10 Surprising Foods You Can Freeze • OPENED WINE: 6 months Can’t finish the whole bottle? Freeze leftover wine in ice cube trays and transfer to freezer bags. Great for cooking, in sauces, stews and the like. • EGGS: 1 year Crack open and mix in a touch of salt (if using for savory dishes) or sugar (for baking or desserts); place in freezer bags or airtight containers. • BROWN RICE (UNCOOKED): 1 year Brown rice has a higher oil content than white rice, so its shelf life isn’t nearly as long. How to clean a room (by a smart Mom)
My daughter decided to build a fort the other day and naturally she had to bring all her stuffed toys into that fort. They're sitting on the armchair waiting to be brought back up to her room. There are Legos on and under the coffee table, throw pillows that need to be fluffed and a stack of books and magazines I've been meaning to read piled up on the dresser. When I feel I just can't take the mess anymore, I step away from my work and set the alarm on my phone for five minutes. Then I run around like a mad woman cleaning up. Loose papers get tossed in the recycling. Toys go downstairs. Toys go upstairs. Magazines get put away. Clothes get hung back in the closet. And when the alarm goes off, I go back to work. I find all it takes is five minutes to tackle any one room in the house. I do this clean up three to four times a week, and before you know it, the house doesn't look like a neglected dusty mess anymore.

Penny Pinchers When your mascara seems like it's running it out, it usually still has some left (I read somewhere that even a quarter of the tube is left!). An easy way to get everything out of your tube of mascara or to give a dried-out tube new life: give it a few drops of contact solution. Use the brush wand to mix it up and you get more mascara. I've done this and it totally works! Close your closets to save money on heating and air conditioning. Apparently, closing your closet doors lowers the amount of square feet your furnace or A/C has to heat/cool. Plus, closing closets along exterior walls of your home actually helps insulate a little. Take care of your clothes before washing them to make them last longer. Before you put clothes in the washing machine, zip, button, fasten hooks, and turn clothes inside out. Doing this prevents snags, minimizes wear and tear, helps prevent piling, and helps clothes fade less, allowing you to get the most wear out of your wardrobe. Buy generic and store-brand medicine whenever possible. The FDA actually requires that these versions of medicine provide the same benefits as the name-brand counterparts. They have the same ingredients! The name-brand stuff just costs more because they've spent more money on research and marketing. Since the generics don't pay for that, the savings are passed on to you. Avoid rush hour and save gas. By leaving just 30 minutes earlier or later than you normally do, you'll spend less time idling in traffic and wasting gas. To resurrect an old broom, put a rubber band (or more if your broom is really suffering) around the bristles at the bottom (a few inches from the base). Leave the rubber band on for a day or so and when you take it off, your broom will work as a good as (almost) new. Lower your water heater temperature. Lowering your water heater temperature from 140 to 120 degrees (which works for most people) can reduce your hot water costs 6-10%. Replace your furnace filter monthly, even in the summer. When your filter is clogged with dust, your furnace has to work harder, it becomes less efficient, and it can damage the furnace after long enough. He also said you don't need to buy the expensive filters -the cheapest ones are fine unless you have severe allergies and require a special filter. Create a waiting period for yourself before you spend more than $50 on a single item. Give yourself a 24- or 48-hour waiting period to decide if you really want/need that item or if it's an impulse purchase. Make your toilet a water-saving one by putting a water-filled jar into the tank. The jar displaces some of the water and tank doesn't refill with as much. Buy items at warehouse stores but do it wisely -- not everything there is a good deal.

One day, I was playing with my 4-year-old grandson and his race-car set. Later on, he was doing something that wasn't allowed. After three warnings, I yelled at him to stop. He came over to me with a long face, head down and lower lip quivering, and climbed on my lap. He said, "I still like you, Nana, but According to the research firm DALBAR, if you talk to me like that again, you may not be able to play with my race-car set anymore." – Inc., the average investor in asset allocation Bob Tonachio mutual funds (which spread your money in a "Hey Grandma, Why don't you and Grandpa have names like the rest of us?" Driving my 6-year-old grandson home, I spotted a lady crossing the street with her dog. "Matthew," I blend of equities and fixed-income funds) earned only 1.76% per year said, "Look at the cute little French poodle over there." "Grammy, how do you know he's French?" – over the last 30 years! These investors didn't even come close to beating inflation, which averaged 2.7% per year. The average investor in equity mutual funds averaged only 3.79% per year – beating inflation by only 1% per year. (Was that worth the roller-coaster up and down ride and sleepless nights?) Are you ready for this: The 3.69% return investors in equity funds got over the last 30 years was almost two thirds less than the return of the S&P 500 index over that period! Pity those who invested in fixed-income funds. They only managed to eke out a .72% annual return, significantly trailing inflation and getting only a tiny fraction of the return of the corresponding benchmark. Of course, if you're investing in a tax-deferred account like a 401(k), IRA, or 403(b), you're also paying hefty fees, AND you'll have to pay taxes when you start taking income. And that can easily wipe out another 30-50% of the meager returns you managed to eke out. All of which makes it abundantly clear that if you're invested in the market, you're only fooling yourself if you believe you are growing real wealth in the Wall Street Casino, when the reality is that you may be digging yourself deeper and deeper into a hole you may never be able to climb out of. So, who is the "average investor"? The DALBAR 2015 Quantitative Analysis of Investor Behavior states "average investor" refers to "the universe of all mutual fund investors whose actions and financial results are restated to represent a single investor." This universe would include small and large investors as well as professionally advised and self-advised investors. The Conclusion of This New Report is That... "The results consistently show that the average investor earns less – in many cases, much less – than mutual fund performance reports would suggest." A mission field in my own back door? Why, that just can't be true. My neighbors all profess they're saved, most all their children, too. Of course, the Smiths don't go to church, they're just too tired I guess. The husband works six days a week, and on Sunday must have his rest. Now, Mrs. Jones says she loves the Lord, she's on every committee in town. Doesn't leave much time for worship though, says she's working to win a crown. I spoke with Mr. Brown this morning of the weather, and "how is your wife?" We talked about things in general, but not of eternal life. We visited with Bill and Sue last night and had a good discussion. I should have witnessed God's love to them, but I didn't want to rush them. Next time we go I'll be sure and ask them both about their soul; No hurry, they've got lots of time...good health and far from old. What's that you say? A wreck today? You say they both were killed? My neighbors, just two doors away? Oh, no! Not Sue and Bill! I failed to tell them of God's love, and that they should make plans where they would spend eternity; their blood drips from my hands! Things That Other Countries made Illegal, but The U.S. Finds Suitable
1. Baby walkers
Canada outlawed baby walkers in 2004, saying they could be dangerous to babies, as well as delay motor and mental development. Anyone in possession of, or selling a baby walker, can face fines up to $100,000 or six months in jail.
2. Ketchup in school
If you didn't think the French were snooty before, get ready. In 2011, they banned ketchup in school cafeterias to preserve the flavor of French cuisine.
3. Mullets
In 2010, the Ministry of Culture in the Islamic Republic of Iran banned what they considered "decadent" western hair styles for men. That included spikes, ponytails and yes, mullets. (Personally, I think banning mullets worldwide would be a good choice, get on that UN.)
4. Plastic bags
The first country to ban plastic bags was Bangladesh in 2002. After that, the bans have caught on all around the globe. Here in the United States some individual cities have bans on the bags, and California has moved to ban them statewide.
5. Chewing gum
Actually chewing gum was never made illegal in Singapore, but the country outlawed importing and selling it in 1992. 12 years after the original ban, it was edited to allow people to get a prescription for sugar-free gum that has oral health benefits. They can still face intense fines if they spit it out on the ground though.
6. Weird baby names
If you're living in Denmark and have a baby, the government has a list of 7000 "appropriate" names you can choose from. If you want to name your baby something other than what's on the list, you have to have approval from a church. Countries such as New Zealand, Sweden and many more have similar laws
7. Incandescent light bulbs
Cuba led the charge in this department in 2005 by banning the sale and import of incandescent bulbs in favor of CFLs. Argentina did the same in 2010 and European Union countries in 2012.
8. Spanking
Sweden banned parents spanking their children in 1979 and since then 45 other countries have followed suit. In the United States on the other hand, corporal punishment is still allowed in school in 19 states.
9. Tobacco products
Bhutan outlawed the cultivation, harvesting, production and sale of tobacco products in 2010. Consumption of these products is still legal, if you can get it.
Why TDOT posts fatality numbers on the interstate Interstate Dynamic Message Signs and what does it mean? In April 2012, Tennessee became the first state in the nation to post fatality numbers daily on its Dynamic Message Signs (DMS). This decision was made by TDOT officials after seeing a sharp increase in fatalities in the first quarter of 2012 over the same period in 2011. TDOT hoped by raising the publics awareness, a positive impact on drivers’ behaviors could reverse the current trend. By the end of 2012, the rate of fatalities had slowed and Tennessee ended the year with 1,015 fatalities Beginning in January 2013, TDOT decided to post the fatality numbers only on Fridays. However, by October, approximately 800 people died on Tennessee roadways, which is the same number of fatalities recorded in October 2012. In an October news conference with the Governor’s Highway Safety Office and the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security, Commissioner Schroer announced that TDOT would again post fatality numbers daily. What does the information on the DMS represent? YTD stands for year-to-date. This is the total number of fatalities as of that day in 2015 and the total number of fatalities as of the same day in 2014.

Weaver Wins Lucas Series At Smoky Mountain Speedway
By: John Griffin It happened at Smoky Mountain Speedway on Sat. June 20th. The Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series was in the house for the 2nd annual Old Smoky Moonshine Classic. A record crowd was the house to watch all the stars battle it out. The hottest driver on the circuit , who had won 9 straight races was there. A new first time winner won in the Lucas Oil Race as Randy Weaver of Crossville, came from 3rd starting position to take the lead to pull away to win his 1st Lucas Race. Weaver was followed by Scott Bloomquist of Moorseburg, in 2nd with Jonathan Davenport 3rd. Weaver was excited in victory lane after the race and the win. The Limited Late Models were in action with Cory Hedgecock taking the checker with Jason Manley 2nd, and Drew Kennedy 3rd. The Street Stocks were in action with Kurt Owens taking the checker, Chris Rickett taking 2nd, and Brad Davis 3rd. Smoky Mountain will be back in action on Fri. July 10th with the Ultimate Series in action. On Thurs. July 16th, the USCS Sprints will be at the track and then on Fri. July 31st, Ray Cook’s Southern National Series rounds out the month. The track and all the owners would like to thank all the fans for the record crowd they had for the Lucas race.
Get better fuel mileage
You will get better fuel economy on your pickup if you keep the tailgate up. Although it would seem that the large vertical tailgate would stop the airflow over your truck, it actually improves the aerodynamics, according to engineers at all the major automakers, as well as numerous independent tests, including, most notably, Consumer Reports. Also, driving with the tailgate down is going to put a lot of excess wear on the hinges, which is going to reduce their strength and make them wear out faster, resulting in an unnecessary repair. What's more, tailgates were not meant to withstand the impact of a collision in the down position, so there's a much greater likelihood of damage to the tailgate in a rear-end collision, and potential to push the tailgate into the sides of the truck bed, causing substantial damage in a low-speed crash.

Six things you didn’t know about French Fries This universally beloved food has a long and interesting history. There are few foods that have been eaten at some point by just about everyone in the Western world, but French fries are one of them. Call them fries, or call them chips, — whatever you call them, fried potato sticks are one of the most universally beloved junk foods on earth. Here are six things we bet you didn’t know about them. Nobody Can Agree on Where They Were Invented The French, Spanish, and Belgians all claim that they were the sole inventor of fries. Belgian fry lovers claim that they’re called “French fries” because all Belgian food is appropriated by the French; the French claim that street vendors on the Pont Neuf bridge were the first to sell them, in 1789; and the Spanish claim that, as the first European country to bring potatoes from the New World, they have a historical argument for inventing them. British Chips Are Thicker Than American Fries You might think chips and fries are identical save for the name, but visit a traditional British chipper and you’ll see they couldn’t be more different. Chips are cut much thicker, are slightly soggier, and contain less fat than American fries because of their thickness. Contain More Acrylamides Than About Any Other Food Acrylamide, a chemical compound that develops when starchy food is cooked at a high temperature, is considered a potential carcinogen by the U.S. government and has been shown to cause tumors in the adrenal glands, thyroid, and lungs when consumed in high concentrations. In a 2002 study, the World Health Organization determined that the intake level for toxicity was 500 times higher than in the average diet, but more studies are being conducted. McDonald’s Has a Lock on the Market About 7 percent of all the potatoes grown in the United States are turned into McDonald’s fries. The chain sells more than one-third of all fries sold in restaurants. Thomas Jefferson Introduced Them to America Jefferson served “potatoes, fried in the French manner” at a White House dinner way back in 1802. Don’t Steal Your Boyfriend’s Fries Taking French fries off of a significant other’s plate is supposedly one of the most common causes of lovers’ quarrels at restaurants.

8 Things You DON’T Need In Your Kitchen

If you have a small kitchen, every square inch of counter space counts. Chances are you have a collection of items on your kitchen counters that you don’t use regularly, only have a single use, or both of those. To cut clutter and liberate your cooking area and counter space, consider ditching the following 8 items. 1. Toaster Let’s start radically by challenging tradition? While a toaster might seem like a can’t-live-without item, it’s really an unnecessary kitchen tool when you really look at it. The pop-up toaster was only developed in the way we recognize it by 1913. Before that into the late 1800s, a broiler or a skillet was used for making toast. You can do that too! 2. Microwave “Ack! Are you insane???” Well, it might seem even more radical to suggest that a microwave should be anything less than totally central to your kitchen. But, one thing to consider is the relationship that you have with your kitchen as far as what you actually do while you’re in it. For instance, how central is your microwave, really, to the daily meals you’re preparing in your kitchen? Ask yourself this question, and then decide whether or not the counterspace or cabinet space your microwave takes up is really justified. 3. Sandwich maker In your quest for a minimalist kitchen, small appliances that have only one function (like your toaster!) are prime candidates for demotion on your countertops. Sandwich makers have a certain appeal. But, unless you’re really expanding on ways to use it, it might be time to give your sandwich maker its walking papers when it comes to taking up countertop space. 4. Extra dishes You know that hideous floral dinnerware that your well-meaning neighbor gave you? Drop it off at the nearest secondhand store. You might keep stuff like that around in your cupboards and cabinetry, just in case you ever have more guests than your regular set of dinnerware can handle. But if that happens, renting plates from catering companies or borrowing them from friends and family are always viable options. Your well-meaning neighbor won’t even notice. 5. Deep fryer While your doctor probably wouldn’t argue with you if you gave up completely on those treats from the fryer, getting rid of your deep fryer doesn’t mean you have to go without the goodies. A sturdy saucepan and a thermometer will get the job done, and you’ll have one less bulky item hogging your counter or cupboard space. 6. Rice Cooker Here’s the thing. You don’t really need a rice cooker. All you need is a saucepan with a lid. Cooking rice on the stove top is almost as easy as using a rice cooker. My method? It’s one-part rice, two parts water, cover and set to boil, turn off the heat completely when boiling is achieved. Then, let it sit with the lid on for about 15 mins. 7. Popcorn maker You got rid of the microwave in the kitchen, and now the popcorn maker is on the chopping block, so what are you going to eat on movie night? Once again, making popcorn on the stove top is a solution. Granted, making popcorn on the stove isn’t as easy as throwing a bag of popcorn in the microwave or using the popcorn maker, but you still end up with a delicious treat—and a new skill to add to your growing list of culinary feats. And like you did with your microwave, maybe this is just a matter of re-location rather than changing your approach to making a buttery treat. Move that popcorn maker into the family room where you play your boardgames, or watch movies. Redefine where your appliances are according to your needs. This is your space. You get to decide where things go. Simple. 8. Extra knives That big wooden block sitting on your counter probably only has a few slots that see frequent action. A chef’s knife, a paring knife, and a bread knife are all essential, but that’s really all you need. Keep them sharp, keep them clean, and say farewell to all the knives that you kept around for reasons that may now escape you. The same goes for that drawer (you know the one, everyone has one …) with the jumble of mysterious implements with uses that remain to be a mystery. Clear that out and be brutal about how often you use each item in there. You’ll thank yourself later.

Why is U.S. Paper money Green? The new bills circulated by the U.S. government starting in the 1860s came to be known as greenbacks because their back sides were printed in green ink. This ink was an anti-counterfeiting measure used to prevent photographic knockoffs, since the cameras of the time could only take pictures in black and white. In 1929, the government shrunk the size of all paper money (in order to cut down on manufacturing costs) and instituted standardized designs for each denomination, which made it easier for people to tell real bills from fakes. The small-sized bills continued to be printed with green ink because, according to the U.S. Bureau of Printing and Engraving, the ink was plentiful and durable and the color green was associated with stability. Today, there is some $1.2 trillion in coins and paper money in circulation in America. It costs about 5 cents to produce every $1 bill and around 13 cents to make a $100 bill, the highest denomination currently in circulation. The estimated life span of a $1 bill is close to six years, while a $100 bill typically lasts 15 years. The $50 bill has the shortest average life span: 3.7 years.
Crayola Crayons Every one of the iconic art supplies are made at a factory in Easton, Pennsylvania. The plant churns out the top-selling crayons at a rate of 650 crayons per minute, with a total production of up to 13.5 million per day in 400 different colors. On average, the facility makes 3 billion Crayola crayons per year. The company, which has annual revenue of $750 million also makes 600 million Crayola Colored Pencils, 465 million markers, 110 million sticks of chalk, 9 million Silly Putty eggs and 1.5 million jars of paint annually. The company's U.S. workforce of 1,650 includes 1,221 located at the headquarters in Eastons that reports annual revenues of $750 million.

How to Write a Thank You Note After a Funeral

People experience greater empathy and practical support following bereavement than at any other time of their life. Sending a thank you note after a funeral is a traditional part of funeral etiquette, and it is a kind way to communicate that you appreciate your fellow mourners and their attendance to the funeral. Sending a note Sending a thank you note is a gesture that can mean so much, not only to the person sending the notes, but also to the recipient. The time immediately following a funeral is a time for calm, and reflection and not everyone feels organized enough to contemplate the organization of passing on thanks. Who Receives a Thank You Note While you may feel indebted to every attendee, it is not necessary to send a thank you note to each person. Concentrate on the closet family members and those who have contributed to the service in some way. The following are examples of individuals to whom you might send a note: •Those who sent flowers, gifts or donations •Those who prepared a meal, ran an errand or offered support in your time of need •Close family or friends •Those who spoke at or helped with the funeral It is logical and only right to thank people for gifts, cards, charitable donations and practical acts of support, but for some it is as important to thank someone for the meaningful and much appreciated psychological support they offered. It is true that in times of sadness and distress, words can be far more comforting than material offerings. Hand-Written Notes Putting pen to paper to write a personal thank you card may seem like a chore to most individuals. However, there are healing benefits to sending a thank you card or letter. Acknowledging your appreciation of others is therapeutic for you and the person receiving your words and may help reinforce bonds of friendship and reciprocate feelings of support. In addition, as you consider what to say in your note, you will revisit the positive responses of friends and family and affirm their efforts to comfort you and others while also paying their respects to the deceased.
The driver of a huge tractor trailer lost control of his rig and plowed into an empty tollbooth, smashing it to pieces. He climbed down from the truck and surveyed the wreckage. Within a matter of minutes, another truck pulled up and unloaded a crew of workers. The men picked up each broken piece of the former tollbooth and spread some kind of creamy substance on it. Then they began fitting the pieces together. In less than half an hour they had the entire tollbooth reconstructed and good as new. "Astonishing!" the truck driver said to the crew chief. "What was that white stuff you used to get all the pieces together?" The crew chief said, "Oh, that was tollgate booth paste."

Forgive Your Enemies
The preacher’s Sunday sermon was Forgive Your Enemies. Toward the end of the service, He asked his congregation, “how many of you have forgiven their enemies”? About half held up their hands. He then repeated his question. As it was past lunchtime, this time about 80 percent held up their hands. He then repeated his question again. All responded, except one small elderly lady. “Mrs. Jones?” inquired the preacher, Are you not willing to forgive your enemies? “I don’t have any.” she replied. smiling sweetly. “Mrs. Jones, That is very unusual. How old are you?” “Ninety-three,” she replied. “Oh Mrs. Jones, what a blessing and a lesson to us all you are. Would you please come down in front of this congregation and tell us all how a person can live ninety-three years and not have an enemy in the world.” The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, faced the congregation, and said “I outlived the old hags.”

When I Write by: R.B. Tetro
When I write I come to the empty page with respect and a lurking sense of dread that for some reason I will not be able to create or convey what my mind and heart want to say anymore. When I write it’s never clear enough, or powerful enough, or clever enough, or enough. My writing is an obsession that pulls at my mind day and night, sending me into fits of verbal entanglements and run on sentences… still running. When I write, and then read my work, I wonder if anyone else really feels my writing, or are they just politely listening and waiting for their turn to read their own words. Writing is air and I breath in deep gulps and relish in the freedom of it and the ability to create or destroy a world that has never been seen before or experienced. A look inside my writing shows the turmoil and laughter of my soul my writing is a shadow of my heart in print and on display for the world to see. I am not famous but when I read my writing sometimes, I think perhaps someday, far down the road, that maybe my writing is not so bad and it could possibly rise out of the slush pile and be printed and actually become… Thoughts like that make my simple head spin and make me dread becoming a known author because part of what makes my writing worth reading is my anonymity and my loneliness. I’m not ashamed in the slightest to admit I write for money so that perhaps one day I won’t have to tell my children, no, all the time, and my wife can have the things she deserves but is too selfless to ask for. Not to be rich, but comfortable enough to take a breath and enjoy life without facing the everyday challenges of borderline poverty. I look forward to the day were I can take time to write and not always feel like I’m running out of time to write and I can carefully, and thoughtfully weigh each word for substance and impact The dream to wake and write and write some more and not have to go anywhere or do anything but write and write well is what keeps me writing into the deep watches of the night and up again at four to write some more. This heavenly gift, this unnerving fluke a delightfully consuming obsession to write and be a writer of worth is what I aspire to attain with my pen and my squirrelly mind and the ever elusive; imagination cloud that only brings its silver spun rain every now and again. I write to hold back my minds decay and to breathe and to exist. My words come from my soul’s well, partly dark and lined with sorrow and sparkling memories swirling in crystal water. Jagged and edged, my words bite and prick and know and whisper into your inner thoughts flitting about and gone leaving a STAIN OF COMPREHENSION. Would that I could write something that would change the world and wake up the masses. My writing is a secret lover that’s not always in the mood and often times an ass. One evening we dance and create the next evening we are shy strangers awkwardly trying to get to know each other once again. What to write, who to trust, what to say, and who do I want the world of readers to think that I am. My writing my words, my words, my heart in my words, and into your mind my writing goes on and grows and evolves and becomes… when I write.

Fish Facts Fish have been on the earth for more than 450 million years. Fish were well established long before dinosaurs roamed the earth. There are over 25,000 identified species of fish on the earth. It is estimated that there may still be over 15,000 fish species that have not yet been identified. There are more species of fish than all the species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals combined. 40% of all fish species inhabit fresh water, yet less than .01% of the earth's water is fresh water. The spotted climbing perch is able to absorb oxygen from the air and will crawl overland using its strong pectoral fins. Some fish like sharks don't posses an air bladder to help keep them afloat and must either swim continually or rest on the bottom. Some fish make sounds by grating their teeth and others like some catfish make sounds from their air filled swim bladder. Some species of fish can fly (glide) others can skip along the surface and others can even climb rock. Fish have a specialized sense organ called the lateral line which works much like radar and helps them navigate in dark or murky water. The largest fish is the great whale shark which can reach fifty feet in length. The smallest fish is the Philippine goby that is less than 1/3 of an inch when fully grown. Some species of fish have skeletons made only of cartilage. Fish have excellent senses of sight, touch, taste and many possess a good sense of smell and 'hearing'. Fish feel pain and suffer stress just like mammals and birds. Tropical fish are one of the most popular pets in the U.S. 95% of tropical fish mortality results from improper housing and nutrition. Many tropical fish sold in the United States are harvested from the wild in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America.

Riding Doggie The safest way to transport a dog is inside a carrier that is large enough for him to sit and lie down. It should be secured in the cargo space of your SUV or minivan or in the back seat of a car -- never in the trunk. If a carrier isn't practical for your situation, the next best choice is to restrain your dog with a pet harness that connects to the seat belt or to a short leash, with the other end connected to a tie-down point in the cargo space of your vehicle. If you opt for a harness, do some research on the model you purchase to find out how it was tested, because many have been shown to not provide acceptable protection in a crash, according to a pilot study by the Center for Pet Safety. If you use the harness in conjunction with a leash, be sure it is connected to the chest clip -- not to his collar -- and that the leash is long enough for the dog to stand and sit, but not long enough to get him tangled up or to jump over the seat or over the sides of the pickup beds. It probably goes without saying -- never leave your four-legged family member in a closed car. Even with the windows cracked on a cool day, a car's interior can rise to dangerous temperatures.

How to bathe your cat
With her built-in grooming tools (tongue and teeth, of course), your fastidious feline is well-equipped to tackle her own haircare needs. But if she is very dirty or gets into something sticky or smelly, you may need to give her a bath. Read the following tips before you begin to ensure minimal stress and maximum efficiency. 1. Perfect timing: Schedule baths when your cat’s at her most mellow. A play session with a cat dancer or other toy of choice can help tire out even the friskiest of felines. 2. Clip, snip: For your own protection, ASPCA experts recommend trimming Fluffy’s claws before bathing. 3. The brush-off: Next, give your cat a good brushing to remove any loose hair and mats. Now’s also a good time to gently place some cotton in her ears to keep the water out. 4. Stand firm: Place a rubber bath mat in the sink or tub where you’ll be bathing your kitty so she doesn’t slip. Fill with three to four inches of lukewarm (not hot, please!) water. 5. Just add water: Use a hand-held spray hose to thoroughly wet your pet, taking care not to spray directly in her ears, eyes and nose. If you don’t have a spray hose, a plastic pitcher or unbreakable cup works great. 6. Lather up: Gently massage your pet with a solution of one part cat shampoo (human shampoo can dry out her skin) to five parts water, working from head to tail, in the direction of hair growth. Take care to avoid the face, ears and eyes. 7. All clear: Thoroughly rinse the shampoo off your cat with a spray hose or pitcher; again, be sure the water is lukewarm. Take good care that all residue has been removed, as it can irritate the skin and act as a magnet for dirt. 8. About face: Use a washcloth to carefully wipe your pet’s face. Plain water is fine unless her face is very dirty-in which case, we recommend using an extra-diluted solution of shampoo, being very cautious around her ears and eyes. 9. Dry idea: You’re almost there! Wrap your cat in a large towel and dry her with it in a warm place, away from drafts. If your kitty doesn’t mind the noise, you can use a blow dryer-on the lowest heat setting. And please note, if your pet has long hair, you may need to carefully untangle her fur with a wide-toothed comb. 10. Good girl!: Your little bathing beauty deserves endless praise-and her favorite treat-after all this! And with such a happy ending, next time she may find that bath time isn’t so bad.
