SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY By O.I. Seenya • A black bear cub seen on Lakecrest Drive in Holiday Shores. • After safely crashing a small plane off Smalley Lane, south of Kingston, the pilot was ok, but it was reported he had rust in the gas tank--and it had been sputtering for a week. (No, folks, we don’t make this stuff up). • A bear hit by a vehicle on I-40 near Gallaher Road, then wandering off into a field. • After watching three quarters of the World Cup soccer game between the USA and Portugal, a new to the sport soccer fan mistakenly cheering for the Portugal team the whole time, thinking they were the USA team. • Many workers and volunteers helping to move the debris from the many trees that were damaged when the F-0 tornado hit Kingston.
Roane County Park has become an attraction all its own. Located on Watts Bar Lake, the park is now home to the Roane County Splash Pad, an 18-hole disc golf course, and primitive camp sites. A swimming area, canoes, playgrounds, fishing pier, and walking trail also make this park a favorite among locals. Covered picnic pavilions and indoor meeting facilities are available for rent. It was recently voted #1 on an East Tennessee news website. The annual Summer Fest is held here every June.

4th of July Fireworks When I was small and growing up in Emory Gap, we didn’t have the variety of fireworks we have today. Fact is, the only ones I remember we had were firecrackers, and I was terrified of them. I could picture my whole arm being blown off by one blasting close to me. My two brothers, Jerry and Larry loved shooting firecrackers. One day, they were shooting them in the back yard, and I really needed to go to the outside toilet really bad. I begged them to stop until I could make it to the door, but they wouldn’t. Well, needless to say, I did a dirty job, right there in my shorts in the backyard. I remember Mama coming out and jumping all over me--but didn’t say anything to the two boys who were laughing it up big time! I don’t know if that experience warped me or not, but, to this day, I have never lit a firecracker. I recall Daddy taking the whole family to Harriman on the night of the 4th to watch the speculator fireworks display the city provided. They were shot from Browder Hill (West Hills) and we would park along the highway near where the old Beacon Drive-In was. I remember them only shooting around 6 of them--but they were beautiful, and the boom was so loud. Every year, Daddy would say to just watch, the loud booms and vibrations in the sky would cause it to rain within two days. And what was so odd about this was, it always rained within two days. Daddy was so smart--he knew everything! Now, July 4th for our family consists of having an all day cookout at my very good friend Barbara Fisher’s house, with extremely serious volleyball games following. At dark, we all sit in chairs, or lay on blankets in her front yard and watch the beautiful fireworks the city of Kingston provides each year. July 4th is still a special day in Roane County, and our independence is still proudly celebrated, and thanks to all the volunteers and donors, we are treated to a colorful, long lasting and beautiful fireworks display.
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Humans have more than five senses. The actual number ranges from 9 to over 20. Everyone knows sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing, but humans can also sense balance and acceleration, pain, body and limb position, and relative temperature, as well as a number of more minor senses. It’s not true that people only use 10% of their brains. It’s true that only a small number of neurons in the brain are actively firing at any one time, but inactive neurons are important too. It doesn’t take seven years to digest chewing gum. It’s actually not digestible, and just passes right through your system. Redheads are not going extinct. Neither are blondes. Redheads may become more rare, but they will not die out unless everyone who carries the gene dies or fails to reproduce. Bats are not blind. While about 70% of bats do use echolocation to navigate, all bat species have eyes and are capable of sight. Actually, almost all bats in the megabat or fruit bat family don’t echolocate and have excellent night vision. Life expectancy wasn’t the thirties during the Middle Ages. It’s true that life expectancy in the Middle Ages and earlier was lower, but the average was pulled down by a high infant mortality rate. The typical person who made it to adulthood in medieval England could expect to live into their sixties. Glass doesn’t actually flow like a liquid. Old glass only appears rippled because of antiquated glass-manufacturing processes. Glass is an amorphous solid that only begins to flow like a liquid above the glass transition temperature of 777 ºF. Unevenness in old glass is due to the window-manufacturing processes used at the time that cause variable thickness in panes of glass. Your fingers don’t wrinkle in water because the skin is absorbing water and swelling. It’s actually caused by the autonomic nervous system, and is thought to have evolved because it gives ancestral primates a better grip in slippery, wet environments.

A four year old’s account of Adam and Eve In the beginning, which was close to the start, there wasn’t anything except God, darkness and some gas. The Bible says, “The Lord, thy God, is one,” but I think He has to be much older than that. Anyway, God made the world and then He said, “Give me some light,” and somebody gave it to Him. He split an atom and made Eve. Adam and Eve didn’t wear any clothes, but they weren’t embarrassed because God hadn’t invented mirrors, yet. Adam and Eve sinned by eating one bad apple and they were driven out of the Garden of Eden. I’m not sure what God drove them in because He hadn’t invented cars, either. Adam and Eve’s son, Cain, hated his brother as long as he was Abel. After a while, all of the first people died, except Methuselah, who lived to be, like, a million years old. By the time Bobby arrived, the football game had already started. “Why are you so late?” asked his friend. “I couldn’t decide between going to church and going to the football game. So I tossed a coin,” said Bobby. “But that shouldn’t have taken too long.” said the friend. “Well, I had to toss it 35 times.

Household Hints * Remove stubborn sticky labels. Nail varnish remover, cooking oil, turpentine, or white spirits. * Dripping sink? Attach a long piece of string to the tap. The drip will slowly and silently follow the sting down to the drain. You can also place a sponge underneath the dripping water. * Remove hard water deposits. Fill with malt vinegar, let sit for a few hours, rub off with fine wire scouring pad, rinse. * Remove water stains and soap scum on your glass shower door. Try some white vinegar. Mix the vinegar with some water. Spray the solution on the door and then rinse it off. * Erase stains on bath or by dripping tap. Rub lemon juice and salt, rinse. Or soak with three cups of vinegar for a few hours. * Prevent cracking in a glass or jar when pouring boiling water in it. Stand a silver spoon in it. * Shine jewelry. Rub gold jewelry with ball of soft bread, silver jewelry with lemon and rinse. * Unscrew stuck lid. Use latex dishwashing gloves; they give a non-slip grip that makes opening jars easy. Or place jar in boiling water for a few minutes. * Eliminate tiny scratches on glass. Polish with toothpaste. * To sharpen scissors, cut several pieces of sandpaper, or emery paper. * Stop the noise of a squeaky wood floor. Sprinkle the noisy area with talcum powder. Then walk over the spot to distribute the powder. The powder will lubricate the boards to quiet them. * Tight fitting drawers. Rub soap or candle wax along upper edges of tight fitting drawers. * Use a little shaving cream and spread onto the mirror, then wipe with a soft cloth. It helps defog the mirror after showers. * Dripping Faucet. If you cannot stop the sound of a dripping faucet, place a sponge underneath the faucet to stop the noise. You can also tie a string from the top of the faucet to the bottom of the sink, to allow the water drips to hit the bottom without sound.

It’s Summertime! Let’s do some grilling.
Smoky Grilled Pork Chops
1 tablespoon ground paprika 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring 4bone-in pork chops (1/2 to 3/4 inch thick)
1 tablespoon seasoned salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon onion powder
Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat, and lightly oil the grate. In a bowl, mix together the seasoned salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and smoke flavoring until thoroughly combined. Rinse pork chops, and sprinkle the wet chops on both sides with the spice mixture. With your hands, massage the spice rub into the meat; allow to stand for 10 minutes. Grill the chops over indirect heat until no longer pink inside, about 12 minutes per side. An instant-read thermometer should read at least 145 degrees F (63 degrees C). Allow chops to stand for 10 more minutes before serving.
Grilled corn on the Cob
6 ears corn 6 tablespoons butter, softened
salt and pepper to taste
Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat and lightly oil grate. Peel back corn husks and remove silk. Place 1 tablespoon butter, salt and pepper on each piece of corn. Close husks. Wrap each ear of corn tightly in aluminum foil. Place on the prepared grill. Cook approximately 30 minutes, turning occasionally, until corn is tender.
Grilled peaches and cream
4 peaches, halved and pitted 1 cup soft cream cheese, mixed with nuts and honey 2 tablespoons honey Sugar Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Sprinkle peaches with a tiny bit of sugar. Place pit side down onto grill. Grill for 5 minutes (more or less- just until the surface has nice grill marks). Turn the peaches over and drizzle with a little bit of honey. Place dollop of cream cheese in the place where the pit was. Grill for 1-2 more minutes or until the filling is warm. Serve immediately.
Grilling Tips
1. Marinate meats for grilling. Marinating meat before you grill can actually reduce your cooking time, because the marinade is designed to tenderize the meat, not to mention the flavorful marinades you can purchase or make yourself to give your meat a kick. If you marinate before you grill, try to let the meat marinate at least 2-4 hours for the best flavor and tenderizing results. 2. Skewered meat and vegetables for grilling. When using skewers to grill meat and vegetables, it is important to cut the meat into similar sized pieces to ensure even cooking on the grill. When grilling meat and vegetables on the same skewer, ensure the meat is smaller than the vegetables and well tenderized before grilling, so that the vegetables, which will cook faster than the meat, don't burn before the meat is done. It's also important to ensure the pieces are big enough not to fall through the grill. 3. Hold off on the sauce before grilling. Sauces are great for flavoring meat when grilling, but if you put them on too early, they will burn or brown quickly, making a mess of the grill and not really adding much flavor to the meat. Hold your sauces until the grilled meat is almost done, then add them at the end for the best flavor.

How to clean your kitchen
Spending an entire day in the house isn't always a desirable thing. What may be more desirable is to spend 60-minutes each day in the kitchen. The steps below will assist you to reorganize your kitchen. Day 1 - If you don't have a pad on your refrigerator, set aside a piece of paper somewhere in the kitchen for the next 10 days. Use the top part of the page for "things to buy" and the lower half for other notes. Put a chair in the middle of the kitchen floor and assess what needs to be done. Make a list. Start to pay attention to where you are placing things that are in the dishwasher. Take a mental note of what items are in cabinets that would be better off somewhere else. Take your step ladder out, clean the light fixtures and change any bulbs that aren't working. Day 2 - What does an empty box, step ladder, telephone book, cloth, car and 1 hour have in common? Answer: They're what you'll need to clean the pantry. Remove all items you haven't used in the past year... or won't use in the next few months. Make sure everything is packed properly for storage. Then you can put unused/unwanted food in the box, contact your local non-profit food pantry, and put the box in your car (for now). Day 3 - If you have a self-cleaning oven, turn it on when you wake up. If not, spray or clean the inside of the oven. Then later, rinse it off. Day 4 - Put stove burners, and fan parts in the dishwasher. Clean the top of the range and fan. Clean the inside of the dishwasher and outside of all appliances. Add jet dry to the dishwasher. Day 5 - By now you should have a nice list of items you may want to purchase... such as new shelving paper, food or containers, cleaning supplies, etc. So go out, buy yourself lunch, go shopping, and bring the box of donated food to your local food pantry. Make your life easier in the kitchen. Purchase two inexpensive and dishwasher proof items - a bag of plastic clothes pins and a pair of scissors. Use the clothes pins to close bags of chips, cereals, pasta, etc. Scissors that stay in the kitchen come in handy for many things. Day 6 - Clean the cabinets closest to the dishwasher. Reline them with new shelving paper, if necessary. Find covers for pots, pans, Tupperware and the like. Put any object that doesn't have a cover in a bag. Day 7 - Find a piece of paper and take everything out of the bag you've saved from day six. Write down the name of the product (Revereware, Farberware, Tupperware, Rubbermaid, etc.) and measurements (2 quarts, 8 inches, etc.). Draw the outline of the pot, cover, or container on a piece of paper with the product's name in the middle of the circle. Spend the rest of the hour cleaning and reorganizing the cabinets. Day 8 - Today is Kitchen Floor Day. 'Nuff said Clean the windows. Take measurements for a second set of curtains. Day 9 - Make a trip to Goodwill, or your favorite thrift store to find the covers (or bottoms) of pots, rubber goods, etc. And look for a second set of curtains to use, too. Day 10 - Go to the store. Buy yourself some flowers and celebrate! Go home, place a chair in the middle of the kitchen floor and enjoy all you have accomplished!

PLUS keep shower water away from the blade – it will cause rust. 2) Running shoes Told To Last: 6 months - Can really last for: 2 Years It is pretty easy to extend the life of shoes – keep them at room temperature – leaving them outside will increase the breaking down of those poor soles. 3) Mascara Told To Last: 3 months - Can really last for: 5 Months Most of the time you throw away mascara because it gets cakey -Experts recommend dipping the tube in boiling water for about 15 seconds. It will make the makeup gooey again and may even kill some of the bacteria. 4) Mattresses Told To Last: 8 years - Can really last for: 12 years There are three tricks to getting it to last: Rotate it 180 degrees every six months. This helps keep the mattress from wearing out in the same spot and crapping out after a few years. Also buy a mattress topper – this will help a lot . Lastly – keep the mattress and box spring on a bed frame. 5) Perfume Told To Last: 2 years - Can really last for: 5 years The direct light makes perfume lose its scent – Keep them in their box and place it in the medicine cabinet.

Walking around your camping area as soon as possible and finding bathrooms, public showers, playgrounds and the ranger’s station, if available, will help in getting familiar with new surroundings. Noting any landmarks to help locate the tent and marking them on a map of the area also helps with the orientation process. Never leave the campsite without first asking permission from an adult. Campfires Running around a campsite is dangerous enough because of all the gear lying around, but horseplay around a burning fire is especially dangerous. Throwing garbage, leaves, sticks or anything else into the fire can be a potential hazard because it can cause the fire to flare up or send hot sparks flying into the air. Wild Animals You shouldn't leave food out in the open where it can attract bears, raccoons or other wildlife, and they should never try to get close to a wild animal. Wild animals may look cute and are often more scared of people than people are of them, but this very fact can make them dangerous if they feel the need to protect themselves. This is especially true in the spring when mother animals are protecting their babies. Emptying the garbage often and not keeping food in the tent will help in avoiding surprise visits from wild animals trying to get food. Plants Picking plants in the woods and eating them can be dangerous. Many are poisonous or can cause a bad stomachache or diarrhea. Knowing how to identify, and staying away from, poison ivy will eliminate getting the itchy rash caused by the oils of the plant. Poison ivy has three leaves and, at certain times of the year, white berries. Repeating “leaves of three, let it be” is a fun way to remember to stay away from poison ivy. Ticks Ticks are small bugs that can get on animals and humans. These parasites carry germs and diseases and cause illness if they remain on the body for a long time. Checking bodies for ticks should be a daily event. Helping each other may be necessary; some of the places they like to hide on the body are hard to see yourself. Spots to check are behind knees and ears, in the groin area and underarms. Checking pets you brought camping with you is also necessary as ticks like to hide in animal fur too. Removing ticks is a job for adults.
How to find fossils
1. Research your local geology. You cannot dig in solid rock, nor would you expect to find fossils in the local playground, but it could happen. 2. Look for areas with public access, but not under direct jurisdiction of local, state, and federal park services. These do not usually permit you to dig and remove any specimens. 3. Talk to the local geological, archaeological, and historical societies. They are often happy to share their knowledge with you. Museums and libraries are also good sources for diligent researchers. 4. Gather some basic tools and materials, depending on the digging location and geology. This might include a mason's hammer, shovel, pick, brushes, a sifting pan or box with a hardware cloth bottom, and a notebook. 5. Dig material in a likely looking place in layers, removing scoops of rock-containing earth and sifting it in the "sifter, looking carefully at the stones you uncover. Fossils are simply impressions of animals, fish, or plants which have become part of the local rock, usually found in sedimentary rock. This rock is formed over a long period of time by deposits of silt and mud which have hardened to its present state. 6. Look closely at the stones, identifying the type you find. Silicates and basalts, which are shiny and fairly consistent in color and composition usually don't contain fossils, however, limestone consists mostly of calcium carbonate and can be a rich source. Fossils of sea shells and marine animals are common in the limestone used in highway construction, from grade aggregate, which is small pieces usually less than 2 inches across, to rip rap boulders used to stabilize drainage ditches. 7. Collect samples and interesting rocks to take home and clean up. We all would like to find a T-rex tooth or a Velociraptor, but the vast majority of fossils are less than one inch in size, and removing accumulated soil will reveal them. 8. Keep your eyes peeled. You are likely to make many interesting discoveries while you search. Petrified wood is common in many areas, and arrow heads and other Indian artifacts, unique crystals, agates, and semiprecious gemstones can be a reward for your efforts. 9. Think outside the box. Look in the gravel piles at landscaping supply stores and gravel parking lots where large, coarse stones are used.

Just what is in Potted Meat?
A potted meat food product or potted meat is a food, similar to a pâté, made using a method of food preservation, canning, consisting of cooked meat product, seasoned, often puréed, minced, or ground, which is heat processed and sealed into cans. Various meats, such as beef, pork, chicken, turkey and variety meats are used. It is produced internationally as a source of affordable meat. Its long shelf life and cooked state make it suitable for emergency food supplies, and for military and camping uses, although the high content of fat, and/or preservatives may make it unsuitable for frequent consumption. The final product typically has a spreadable consistency, and typically contains high amounts of salt as a preservative. Canned meats have a mixed reputation on account of the taste, texture, ingredients, preparation and nutrition. The canning process produces a product with a generally homogeneous texture and flavor. The low-cost ingredients used also affect the quality. For example, mechanically separated chicken or turkey is a paste-like product made by forcing crushed bone and tissue through a sieve to separate bone from tissue. In the United States, mechanically separated poultry has been used in poultry products since 1969, after the National Academy of Sciences found it safe for use. On November 3, 1995, the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture published a final rule in the Federal Register (see 60 FR 55962) on mechanically separated poultry, stating that it was safe to use without restrictions.[1] However, it must be labeled as "mechanically separated" chicken or turkey in the ingredient statement. The Letter From Grandma
Got a letter from Grandma the other day. She writes: The other day, I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a “Honk if you love Jesus” bumper sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day, because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting; so I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper.
An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. " The other man said, "What is the name of the restaurant?" The first man thought and thought and finally said, "What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... the one that's red and has thorns." "Do you mean a rose?" "Yes, that's the one," replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to Boy, I’m glad I did! What an uplifting experience followed!! I was last night?" stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is… and I didn’t notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn’t honked, I’d never have noticed! I found that LOTS of people love Jesus!

Why, while I was sitting there, the guy behind me started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, “For the love of GOD!! GO! Jesus Christ, GO!” What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a “sunny beach”…. I saw another waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked my teenage grandson, in the back seat, what that meant. He said that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I’ve never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back. My grandson burst out laughing… why, even he was enjoying this religious experience! A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. I waved to all my sisters and brothers, grinning, and drove on through the intersection. I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again, and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared; so I slowed the car down, leaned out of the window, and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!
Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.

This is an eye witness account which happened in the City of New York, on a cold day in December some time ago. A little boy about 10 years old was standing before a shoe store on Broadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering with cold. A lady approached the boy and said; "My little fellow, why are you looking so earnestly in that window?" "I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes," was the boys reply. The lady took him by the hand and went into the store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He replied, "Certainly," and quickly brought them to her. She took the little fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet then dried them with a towel. By this time the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she purchased him a pair of shoes, and tying up the remaining pairs of socks, gave them to him. She patted him on the head and said, "My little fellow, do you feel more comfortable now?" As she turned to go, the astonished lad caught her by the hand, and looking up in her face, with tears in his eyes, answered the question with these words, "Are you God's Wife?"
The Express Lane
I was in the 'Six Item Express' lane at the supermarket, quietly fuming. Happy Birthday Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the check-out line pushing a cart piled high with groceries. Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to July 24th come forward, looked into the cart and asked sweetly, "So - which A horse named Betty Sue six items would you like to buy? A guy is reading his paper when his wife walks up behind him and smacks and him on the back of Wouldn't it be great if that happened more often? the head with a frying pan. He asks, "What was that for?" She says, "I found a piece of paper in your pocket with 'Betty Sue' written on it." He says, "Jeez, honey, remember last week when I went to the track? 'Betty Sue' was the name of the horse I went there to bet on." She shrugs and walks away. Three days later he's reading his paper when she walks up behind him and smacks him on the back of the head again with the frying pan. He asks, "What was that for?" She answers, "Your horse called."

Smoky Mountain Speedway was host to the 1st ever Lucas Dirt Super Late Model Series on June 21st. A sellout crowd, standing room only greeted drivers at the track as the crowd was the biggest ever at the track. The race, sponsored by “Ole Smoky Mountain Moonshine” had thrills as Scott Bloomquist started on the pole and led for the first 34 laps, until he had to pit to change a left rear tire. After changing the tire, Bloomquist started back in 7th, but he had 16 laps to charge back. In the end, after 50 laps, it was Casey Roberts of Tocoa, GA, taking the checkers for the $10,000 1st place with Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA, and Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tn 3rd, Don O’Neal 4th, Dennis Erb, Sr. 5th, Tommy Kerr 6th, Mike Marlar 7th, Donald McIntosh 8th, and Ray Cook 9th. In the Crate Late Model Feature it was Jason Welsham taking the checkers for the $1500 to win race. Next at Smoky Mountain Speedway it will be July 11th, with the Food City sponsored Firecracker, paying $5000 to win. It will be an Ultimate Super Late Model Series sanctioned race. Pit Notes: The new Atomic has gotten off to a good start. Now, let’s build this track up race fans by going on Friday evenings. Be at a track and support it! Atomic Speedway Reunion is in December...More to follow.

Lipstick blotting A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally the Headmistress decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little Geordie "Princesses"). To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. The year is 1902, only 111 years ago. . . . what a difference a century makes. The average life expectancy in the US was forty-seven. Only 14 Percent of the homes in the US had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average wage in the US was 22 cents an hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home. Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason. The five leading causes of death in the US were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was 30. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. There were no Mother's Day or Father's Day. One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." Eighteen percent of households in the US had at least one full-time servant or domestic help. There were about 230 reported murders in the US.

A traffic cop pulled alongside a speeding car on the motorway. Glancing into the car, he was astounded to see that the young lady, who was driving, was knitting. Realizing that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren, the policeman wound down his window, turned on his loudspeaker and yelled, 'PULL OVER!' 'NO', the young lady yelled back, 'IT's A SCARF!
A man goes to a party and has too much to drink. His friends plead with him to let them take him home. He says no - he only lives a mile away. About five blocks from the party the police pull him over for weaving all over the road, ask him to get out of the car and take the breathalyser test. Just as he is about to blow into the bag, the police radio informs the policemen of a robbery taking place in a house a short distance away. The police tell the partygoer to remain where he is, they will be right back; and they run down the street to the robbery. The guy waits and waits and finally decides to drive home. When he gets there, he tells his wife he is going to bed, and to tell anyone who might come looking for him that he has the 'flu and has been in bed all day. A few hours later the police knock on the door. They ask if Mr. X Don't Swear At lives there and his wife says yes. They ask to see him and she replies Other Drivers! that he is in bed with the 'flu and has been there all day. However, the Eddie was driving down the police have his driver's license. They ask to see his car, and she asks road and a met a police car why. They insist on seeing his car, so she takes them to the garage coming the other way. The Glass Eye
A man is dining in a fancy restaurant and there is a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He has been checking her out since he sat down, but lacks the nerve to talk with her. Suddenly she sneezes, and her glass eye comes flying out of its socket towards the man. He reflexively reaches out, grabs it out of the air, and hands it back. Oh my, I am so sorry, " the woman says as she pops her eye back in place. "Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you, " she says. They enjoy a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they go to the theater followed by drinks. They talk, they laugh, she shares her deepest dreams and he shares his. She listens. After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a wonderful, wonderful time. The next morning, she cooks a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy is amazed! ! Everything had been SO incredible! !! ! "You know, " he said, "you are the perfect woman. Are you this nice to every guy you meet? " "No, " she replies… ""You just happened to catch my eye."

One bond guru, puts it a little more direct in one of his recent articles regarding interest rates: “With higher rates, America would crumble like an upside-down homeowner.” This is not a difficult conclusion to come to, either. Our government is sitting with roughly $17.5 trillion of on-the-books debt. Counting all of its unfunded liabilities and promises for future payments, we are on the hook for nearly $130 trillion. If you do a little math, you quickly find out the kind of impacts even a one-percentage-point increase can make. If interest rates rise one percentage point, then our government pays out an extra $176 billion, 70% more than we are paying today. There are many complaints from people that every time they go out to dinner with their significant other they end up dropping at least $100 for the bill. This is ridiculous. A hundred dollars is not worth just an hour or two of a date. And if you’re doing this once a week or even once every other week, it can add up FAST! Here are some tips on how to get a nice meal without breaking the bank. 1. Skip the drink. A mixed drink can cost up to $12, which is basically the same cost of a half a bottle of liquor if purchased at the store. One beer can cost between $5 and $7, which is the same as about 3 or 4 bottles at the grocery store. If you and your partner each order two drinks it will cost about $30-$40, plus tax and tip. 2. Don’t get dessert at the restaurant. They sure do love inflating the price of dessert. Before spending $8 on that piece of chocolate cake, think about going to the bakery across the street and splitting one of those large cookies with your significant other. It will cost less and will make the date last longer. 3. Get the full portion instead of the half portion. This seems counterintuitive, I know, but it will be your best value. Occasionally, restaurants will offer a “half portion” of a meal for $1 or $2 less. Don’t fall for it. Wouldn’t you rather pay the extra dollar and get twice as much food? Then you can wrap up the other half and eat it for another full meal.

The Bagpiper As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn’t stop for directions.
I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. Try the power of prayer when an earthly situation occurs which is beyond your control and only an almighty God who created the universe and all life can control. A certain time line is given, so like all hopeful human beings, you humbly and diligently pray to the almighty God who says in the Bible he answers prayers. Time and reality passes, the disease takes it's toll, and your prayers go unanswered. Maybe one in a million may be saved, but looking at a 99.9999% failure rate for prayer is evidence that God does not exist. Now, compare it to an atheist who suffers the same terminal disease and wishes for healing. The same 99.9999% failure rate occurs. Now compare it to a devout Muslim suffering the same terminal disease and prays to his/her god for healing, and still results in a 99.9999% failure rate. Similarly, the Hindu, Jew, Buddhist, etc... all face 99.9999% failure rates. Doesn't this indicate you you that there is no God? Perhaps one of the numerous worshiped gods do exist, but wouldn't that omnipotent god produce better than a 99.9999% failure rate, or else what is the purpose of worshiping that god if he doesn't answer your prayers? Setting up an aquarium Setting up your aquarium should be a relatively simple procedure. You should be able to get the whole system up and running in a couple of hours at the most, although you'll have to wait some time before you add the fish. The most important thing for you to do before you begin is to be sure you're prepared. Know in detail what you want the aquarium to be like when you're done, and be sure you have all the equipment, space, and tools you'll need. A new, brand-name tank will almost certainly not leak, but you may want to be absolutely sure about this before setting up the tank in its final location. Choose a dry area, cover it with newspapers, and place the tank on them. Very carefully fill the tank to the rim with cool water and wait for an hour or two. If the newspapers are wet, you know you have a problem with your tank. If there are no leaks, empty the tank, wipe out the interior, and place it on the aquarium stand in its permanent location. If you like, you can apply a background material to the back of the tank. This is optional, but many fish feel more secure if the back and sides are covered. Once this is done, you are ready to install the filtration system.

The ribs on the bottom of the tray provide traction, and the tray's slope allow your pets to wade in the shallow water until they're ready to move into the deep end.
