• On the scanner: A man called and said there was a very bad smell outside his house, kinda like a skunk on fire would smell.

• A cop speeding through a heavily residential area with no lights or sirens on. Please slow down and if it's an emergency, turn your sirens on. If it's not, then quit speeding.

Margaret Largen Emory Gap lost another great lady when Margaret Largen recently passed away.

When I was growing up, Margaret and Chris Largen lived "across the tracks" in Emory Gap and had several kids. The ones I can remember were Eddie, Christine, June, Mary, Linda, Brenda and Johnny.

With the tragic deaths of her son Eddie, daughters Mary and Brenda, and two of her grandkids, you'd think Margaret's life would have been filled with sadness and grief.

But, I don't think it was. I never saw the lady that she didn't smile at me. I thought she had the prettiest smiles of any grown-up in Emory Gap. Chris worked on the railroad and she stayed at home and took care of the kids. Just like all moms did in those days.

They didn't have much, but like I've said before--none of us in the gap realized we were poor because everybody was poor.

I remember Margaret coming to church at Valley Chapel.

She'd sit up close to the front and she always turned sideways and propped her arm over the back of the pew until the service began. This way she could see everyone as they came in the doors. I believe she did this just so she could smile and nod her head at them.

I don't remember her saying much, kinda like she was bashful, but I do remember her smile.

She's in Heaven now. She's with her family that went before her. I can imagine them welcoming her and enjoying that sweet smile that was always on her face, and savoring in the fact that they had not seen that smile since they were children.

Social Security - a "Benefit"?

This is worth reading and thinking about. Pay attention to your next Social Security income, whether you get a check or an electronic deposit....note what it is now called.

Have you noticed, your Social Security check is now referred to as a "Federal Benefit Payment"?

The government is now referring to our Social Security checks as a “Federal Benefit Payment. ”This isn’t a benefit – its earned income!

Not only did we all contribute to Social Security but our employers did too. It totaled 15% of our income before taxes.

If you averaged $30K per year over your working life, that's close to $180,000 invested in Social Security. If you calculate the future value of your monthly investment in social security ($375/month, including both you and your employer’s contributions) at a meager 1% interest rate compounded monthly, after 40 years of working you'd have more than $1.3+ million dollars saved!

This is your personal investment. Upon retirement, if you took out only 3% per year, you'd receive $39,318 per year, or $3,277 per month. That’s almost three times more than today’s average Social Security benefit of $1,230 per month, according to the Social Security Administration (Google it - it’s a fact).

And your retirement fund would last more than 33 years (until you're 98 if you retire at age 65)! I can only imagine how much better most average-income people could live in retirement if our government had just invested our money in low-risk interestearning accounts. Instead, the folks in Washington pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than Bernie Madoff ever did. They took our money and used it elsewhere. They “forgot” that it was OUR money they were taking. They didn’t have a referendum to ask us if we wanted to lend the money to them. And they didn’t pay interest on the debt they assumed. And recently, they’ve told us that the money won’t support us for very much longer. But is it our fault they misused our investments? And now, to add insult to injury, they’re calling it a “benefit,” as if we never worked to earn every penny of it. Just because they “borrowed” the money, doesn't mean that our investments were a charity!

Help prevent nausea One of the best-known remedies for seasickness is ginger. According to MotherNature.com, a natural products/health advice Web site, several studies conducted have shown that taking two 500 milligram ginger capsules to be more effective in combating seasickness than the recommended dosage of Dramamine. The German researchers that conducted these studies believe that ginger works via the digestive tract, instead of shutting down messages traveling to the brain (as most anti-nausea drugs function). Taking ginger capsules just prior to your planned boating or fishing trip, or at the first signs of nausea, should help prevent or lessen the severity of seasickness. If you don’t have access to ginger capsules, try eating some ginger snap cookies or drinking ginger ale. These sources of ginger are not as strong or pure, but they should help a little.

What Causes Seasickness?

In simple terms, seasickness occurs when the body, the inner ear and the eyes all send different signals to the brain. The constantly changing movement stimulates receptors in the brain, leading to confusion, queasiness, headaches, dizziness, nausea, dry-heaving and vomiting. The brain begins to malfunction as the normal, land-based environment it is accustomed to suddenly begins to act differently. Your visual system recognizes things like furniture and cabin walls as stable, while your inner ear is sending strong messages to the brain that they are not.

Tennessee State Parks are Treasures in Our Own Backyard By: Senator Ken Yager

There is a state park within an hour’s drive of just about anywhere in Tennessee.

Several of these state parks are located in the12th Senatorial district including Indian Mountain in Jellico, Cove Lake in Caryville, Frozen Head in Wartburg, Norris Dam in Lake City, Cumberland Trail in Caryville and Pickett in Jamestown, as well as the Alvin C. York Historic Park in Pall Mall. In fact, the twelfth district may have more state parks located in it than any other!

As I have traveled the district, I can attest to the fact that these state parks are among finest in the nation. Whether you want to stay in a cabin, lodge, or camp, or enjoy a vast array of outdoor activities, they are Tennessee treasures in our own backyard.

There is something for everyone to enjoy. These parks provide opportunities for free or low cost family friendly entertainment.

For the past year, Tennessee’s 54 state parks have celebrated our 75th anniversary.

The first state parks were first established through legislation in 1937 as a result of work done by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCCs provided work and vocational training for unemployed Tennesseans after the Great Depression through conserving and developing the country’s natural resources. In our district, Pickett, Norris Dam, and Cove Lake State Parks were among the 17 state parks in Tennessee where the CCC’s efforts can still be enjoyed today. Their work continues to stand the test of time as a monument to the era which ushered in the “greatest generation.” A monument to the CCC “boys” was recently unveiled at Pickett State Park. I was honored to meet some of these men.

Besides serving as a great place for our citizens to enjoy, our state parks also have a huge economic impact on Tennessee, especially in our rural areas. According to a University of Tennessee study, for every dollar spent on trips to Tennessee State Parks, an additional $1.11 of economic activity was generated throughout the state. When the direct and indirect expenditures were combined, the impact of Tennessee State Parks to the state’s economy was $1.5 billion in total industry output, supporting more than 18,600 jobs.

Please take the opportunity to look at the Tennessee State Park website to plan your next trip, whether it is for a day or a week. This website often offers discounts and will provide you with a roadmap of activities you may want to consider. You may also reserve a room or camping spot on-line. Simply put, flowers are colorful for one main purpose, survival. Flowers are the reproductive systems of plants and are therefore responsible for assuring that the plants can survive from one generation to another. Their bright and varied colors help make reproduction and survival possible in several ways. One way is by attracting insects that carry pollen from one flower to another allowing the reproduction process to continue through the creation of fruits and fertile seeds. The distribution of these seeds also might require the help of other animals and that is helped along by making the fruit so delicious and nutritious.

Animals eat the fruit and then distribute the seed, and fertilize it, through their manure.

Bees provide one example of an insect that benefits from colorful flowers and, in turn, benefit the plants through their work.

The bright colors of flowers (and patterns in the reflected UV, or ultraviolet, energy) attract bees to flowers and even to specific areas on the flowers. The bees like the flowers as a source of sweet nectar, which they process into honey for their food. The flowers like to attract the bees so that pollen from their flowers can attach itself to the bees for free ride to another flower. This transfer of pollen from one plant to another is required for the plant to reproduce and survive (or in some cases for it to produce delicious fruit). Law of the Garbage Truck One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he as really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, ' The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks.

They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment.

As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally.

Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.

Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so ... Love the people who treat you right.

Pray for the ones who don't .

A lot of religions believe you should bury no longer usable bibles. If they are very old family bibles, I would look through them before you dispose of them.

Older generations passed down family bibles and often used them as a place to note births, deaths, and marriages. Many have family trees in them carefully recorded through several generations. Be sure you are not loosing something of a treasure like that. Also, check with your local churches and museums to make sure that none might want to have them for their collections. And local churches may have an established bible disposal method and be willing to take yours to make sure they are dealt with reverently.

Household Hints  You know those drip pans that you place under your flower pots to collect all the water that drains from the drains holes? Fill those up with water instead of watering the plant directly. This will allow the plant to soak up water through the roots when it is needed so you will never risk over watering. It also makes it a lot easier to tell when you need to water your plant again. Whenever the drip pan is low or empty just add more water.  If you can't find a shower curtain to match your bathroom style (in most cases I can only find solid black, brown, white and blue or really bright 'teeny-bopper' colors) Then try looking in the regular curtain section. You can turn any curtain into a shower curtain.  Tired of washing dishes all day, or getting blamed for tossing a drink that a family member was still drinking? Make a coaster tray and assign a coaster to each family member. When they are done with their drink they set in on the coaster until they need it again.  Here is a great tip. Use a tackle box to organize and store all you medicine and first aid supplies.  To peel a kiwi cut off the top and bottom, slip a spoon between the skin and the flesh. Twist the spoon around the the entire kiwi (keeping it between the skin and flesh the whole time). Then just pop the skin off.  Use Press'n Seal saran wrap to line your refrigerator shelves. When the shelves get dirty, just remove the wrap, toss in the trash and replace. No more scrubbing nasty food spills.  When you are done using the roll of tape, fold the last quarter inch down and stick it back onto itself. This will create a little tab that can easily be found so you don't have to waste time searching for the end of the tape.  To keep weeds from returning to the cracks of your patio, deck, or driveway keep salt in the cracks.  Remove onion smell from your hands by first washing them with soap and water. Then while hands are still wet rub them over the faucet spout. "No more smelly hands".

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes HATTIE SHILLINGS

Oven Fried Green Tomatoes

4 Green tomatoes, sliced 1 tsp black pepper ½ stick butter, ¼ cup 1 cup flour or corn meal 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder, heaping Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Melt butter in a baking pan. Stir in salt and pepper. Coat sliced tomatoes with flour and place in baking pan. Bake on lower rack of oven for 8 minutes. Turn oven up to broil in order to brown tomato slices. Serves about 6.

Meat & noodle casserole

1 lb. ground beef 3 green onions, chopped 2 cups spaghetti sauce 1 pkg. 3 oz. cream cheese 3 cups gluten free or 1 cup sour cream regular dry noodles, 3/4 cup shredded cheddar spiral works well cheese In a skillet cook ground beef, and drain fat. Stir in spaghetti sauce. Simmer until warm. Cook the noodles according to pkg. directions. Drain noodles and place in a 2 1/2 quart greased baking dish. Top with meat and sauce. Blend together the cream cheese, sour cream and green onions. Spread over the top of the meat and sauce. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Banana creme pie in a bowl

1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup firm butter or margarine 1/2 cup peanuts 4-serving size banana instant pudding

2 cups cold milk 3 ripe medium bananas, sliced 1 container (8 oz) frozen whipped topping, thawed

Heat oven to 400°. In medium bowl, mix flour and brown sugar. Cut in butter, using pastry blender, until mixture is crumbly. Stir in peanuts. Press evenly on bottom of ungreased 9-inch square pan. Bake about 15 minutes or until light brown. Stir to break up. Cool completely, about 1 hour.

In large bowl, make pudding mix as directed on box, using 2 cups milk. In 2-quart serving bowl, layer half of the crumb mixture, pudding, bananas and whipped topping; repeat layers. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours. Top with additional peanuts if desired. Store in refrigerator.

Kill Poison Ivy Combine 1 gallon white vinegar with 1 cup salt and 2 TBSP blue dawn dish soap. * Once all the ingredients have been mixed well pour mixture into a spray bottle. * Spray poison ivy. Be careful not to get it on your other plants because this mixture will kill anything you spray it on!

There you have it, the simple solution for how to kill poison ivy! If you want to have the greatest {deadly} effect it is best to spray the ivy during the dry seasons so it doesn’t get washed off by the rain.

Kitchen "Miracle" Cleaner

Put about 1/4 cup of baking soda in a small glass bowl and squirt in hydrogen peroxide until it makes a nice paste. Rub it on the offending stain or grease...whatever! You can usually just use your fingers.

But you can also use a small sponge as well. Works wonders!

More uses for DuctTape 1. Apparently it’s not just an old wives’ tale. Studies of duct tape’s effectiveness have yielded mixed results, but some research does suggest regular gray duct tape can assist in wart treatment. To give it a whirl, cover up warts with duct tape every day for six days, then soak the warts in warm water on the seventh day and exfoliate them with an emery board or pumice stone. Repeat this process for as long as two months, and there’s a good chance your warts will be gone.

2. Prevent Blisters from Ruining a Workout. Avid runners, walkers, and hikers are likely familiar with this trick: When you first feel the symptoms of an impending blister (i.e., burning, friction, or irritation), apply duct tape over the irritated spot as smoothly as possible. If a blister has already developed, protect it from the duct tape’s glue by placing a circle of paper or gauze directly over the blister, and then apply the duct tape on top.

3. Make an Emergency Bandage. If you’re nowhere near a first aid kit when someone develops a cut, apply some sterile, absorbent fabric to the wound (a bandana or strip of t-shirt will do in a pinch) and then wrap duct tape around the cut (applying firm, but not constrictive, pressure) to hold the fabric in place.

4. Make a DIY Mask for CPR. Needs to administer mouth-to-mouth don’t have a CPR mask handy? A strip of duct tape could help save a life. Fold big piece of duct tape over on itself (so that the sticky side isn’t exposed) and cut a quick slit to breathe through (important note: do this quickly).

5. Trap Bugs. No one wants flying insects buzzing around inside.

Keep bugs at bay by hanging long strips of duct tape from the ceiling (like flypaper). If you’re looking to get a cardio workout out of your bug trapping, wrap a tennis racket in duct tape (sticky side out) and wave it around to trap the little critters.

6. Keep Socks from Slipping. Sliding around in your socks on tile floors is all fun and games until someone crashes and cracks a few bones. Skip the skid by attaching a strip of duct tape to the bottom of each sock in order to make a non-slip sole. (This one’s especially handy if you have kids.)

7. Make an Apron. Need to protect your clothes from getting messy while whipping up some healthy recipes? No problem — just make an apron from duct tape! Or, heck, just make a whole water-resistant outfit out of duct tape.

8. Make Garden Labels. If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, keep your herb and produce beds organized with adorable garden labels made from aluminum duct tape.

9. Work Out — Intensely. A thirty-minute, high intensity interval training workout using nothing but duct tape as a jump rope?

Count us in!

10. Get Stronger Arms. This move is super simple, but if the Marine Corps Times recommends it, we’re going to assume it’s pretty legit. Just hold a large roll of duct tape out to your side, and keep holding it there until you no longer can. Then repeat with the other arm.

Helpful Hint

Rub a pancake griddle with a small bag of salt to prevent sticking and smoking. Sprinkle a little salt in the skillet before frying fish to prevent the fish from sticking. Sprinkle salt on washed skillets, waffle iron plates or griddles, heat in a warm oven, dust off salt; when they are next used, foods will not stick.

Use AAA batteries and fill the gap with a wad of tin foil on the positive side. ď‚&#x; Those packages of pre-sliced apples you can buy at store are great for a healthy snack on the go but the price can add up. Make your own by slicing apples, soak in cold water for 3-5 minutes, then soak in a lemon-lime carbonated soda (such as 7-up or sprite) for 3-5 minutes. Divide into snack size portions and store in Ziploc bags in the fridge. The lemon-lime soda will keep the apples from browning. ď‚&#x; Don’t buy expensive cleansers. 1/2 lemon sprinkled with table salt can be used safely to clean or remove stains from granite. For stains leave lemon and salt on stain to soak, then rinse with clean water and dry. ď‚&#x; Dampen a cloth with white vinegar then sprinkle cream of tartar on the cloth to clean porcelain. ď‚&#x; Tomato ketchup can make your copper gleam better than an expensive polish, also. Simply mix ketchup and water in equal parts. Apply it to your copper with a soft cloth and wipe off. ď‚&#x; Instead of buying Drano or other products, pour two cups of baking powder in a large pot of water. When it boils; pour down the clogged drain. It unclogs immediately. ď‚&#x; Fixing Scratched DVDs & CDs. Work a little peanut butter into the disk and wipe away with a dry cloth. ď‚&#x; Removing Gum From Carpeting. Temperance movement activists from New York founded Harriman as a Temperance Town in 1889, but temperance and prohibition didn’t keep folks from drinking.

Does anyone remember the low level “speakeasy” on Roane Street across from the Webbo Theater? Not only could a quick bottle of beer be purchased to take home, but also a bet could be made on scores for the latest national baseball games or a try for a sum of money on one of those punch out boards. This once famous and popular joint was “S.M.’s” place of business and I’m sure a lot more could be purchased there.

Two of “S.M’s” boys were my friends and going to their house could be quite interesting. Once while visiting I heard loud popping sounds coming from the basement. The three of us went to the basement to investigate and discovered several tops from the bottles of “home brew” popping off. I guess they simply over fermented.

“S.M.” had a nice wooden speedboat and rides on the Tennessee River were really an adventure for me. Just east of “S.M’s” the new car dealership at the time displayed the short-lived Tucker Torpedo.

Any of you old timers remember the house of “ill repute” on the left side of old highway 27 on the way to Oakdale? It sure was odd to see all those ladies of the “day and night” hanging out around that place and men coming and going. This was “J.S.’s” place of business.

I was only a toddler but as I grew older I remember my grandma and mother talking about my Dad’s old beer joint-Pete’s Beer Garden located on the right side of old highway 27 and just below “J.S.’s” place. Dad would sell all kinds of booze as Morgan County was a wet county and just a short distance from Harriman and Oakdale. A bit of drinking and off the men would go to “J.S.’s” place just up the road. My dad was called “Pistol Pete” because he always had two 38 caliber pistols under the dash of his Hudson “Terraplane” car.

In the early 1930’s the federal government created the National Recovery Administration (NRA). Local community businesses would advertise their support for the program with posters of the “Blue Eagle” and asking folks to spend money locally. Page 668 of the famous book Harriman: the Town that Temperance Built by Walter T. Pulliam shows Harriman’s “NRA Honor Roll” published on August 17, 1935 by the Harriman Record newspaper shows a list of 125 names of Harriman businesses who were active in supporting spending dollars locally. I thought it quite humorous and ironic that the first name on the Honor Roll was “Pete’s Beer Garden”. You must remember that Harriman was a “dry town” at that time so my dad Pistol Pete Pete Semanick, owner of the beer garden, must have had some influence to have his business at the top of the list for all to see, especially since dad had his place on highway 27 in Morgan county. His business must have been quite successful at supporting the local economy. Harriman waited until 1992 for it’s first liquor store.

I think of my sister Sandra most every day.

After a long bout with cancer, Sandra Stout finally succumbed in 2011.

We were close in age--I was a little over a year older than she.

When we were kids, Sandra and I used to fight like the proverbial cats and dogs. But as we grew older, we called a truce and quit fighting.

Some of the things I remember most about Sandra were her fighting spirit and her honesty and righteous indignation. She was a fighter.

If she got engaged in a fight of whatever kind, she would never give up. She was also one of the most honest people I've ever known, and she would flare up with indignation whenever she saw corruption or theft or cronyism.

Sandra was outspoken, especially when she was on the Harriman City Council. If she saw wrongdoing, she wasn't shy about calling it out. When she discovered the corruption and cronyism that was going on with the Harriman Utility Board, she cried out about it in both The Roane Reader and at city council meetings. She even received death threats for her crying out. But that didn't deter Sandra. She was courageous as well as being outspoken.

Sandra was probably the most talented person I've ever known.

Her interests were many and varied. Just some of the things that she did and/or was interested in were stock car racing (she raced a car herself), mud wrestling (she won more than one bout), The Roane Reader--which she edited with our sister Kay for more than eighteen years.

She was a school bus driver for years, and a Harriman City Council member. She was even vice-mayor for awhile. I could go on and on with the things that Sandra was interested in and got involved in, but it would take up too much space.

As the old saying goes, blood is thicker than water. Sandra and I used to fight a lot, but as every one who has a sister knows, you love and take up for your sister--no matter what.

I think of Sandra most every day, and I miss her more than I can say. - Jerry Lemons

I stating thinking how Satan puts his chains of sin on people so they will do his bidding, and as time goes on they get so used to the chains and sins they believe that is the way to live.

But, oh, if those deceived, misguided people would just read God's Holy Word and believe and understand, He (God) has a most precious way of life here on earth and an eternal life in Heaven for them, and that's a sure way they can and should get used to!

Remembering the last hanging in Roane County

By Robert Bailey and Jere Hall The last execution that took place in Roane County was the hanging of Isaac Fain in the courtyard of the historic courthouse in November 1884. Fain had been tried and convicted of murdering Thomas Curren.

The case was a spectacular one and was well covered in newspapers of the day, (often with conflicting information) but the salient facts seem to be as follows: Fain worked as a section hand on the Cincinnati Southern Railroad. He was a small black man about 21 years old with a violent temper. On March 29, 1884, while working near Emory Gap, he had an altercation with his section boss, Thomas Curren. Sharp words exchanged between the two men and Fain was fired. He hung around the work site most of the day, muttering threats against Curren, then left in the late afternoon and returned with a double barreled shot gun.

He stayed out of sight until he had a clear shot at Curren, cursed him and emptied the gun into his victim's back, killing him instantly.

Fain threw down his gun and fled to the mountains. A large party of men scoured the countryside for about a week until he was captured near Loudon. He was jailed at Kingston, but moved to Loudon for safe keeping because of word that a large lynching party was on the way.

He was later returned to Kingston, charged and tried for first degree murder in the historic courthouse. After about 40 minutes of deliberation, the jury brought in a guilty verdict and he was sentenced to death. Although his case was appealed to the Tennessee Supreme Court, the death sentence was upheld.

Fain spent the last months of his life studying the Bible and praying while a gallows was being built on the south lawn of the historic courthouse. The scaffold was walled with boards on three sides, and canvas covering on the east (Third Street) side. On the fateful day of his execution in November 1884, he was led to the gallows by the sheriff, securely shackled. After he climbed the steps to the platform, the canvas was thrown back and Fain faced a crowd of 3000 to 4000 people who had come to town to witness his execution.

The doomed man then preached a sermon, confessing his crime and urging his audience to turn aside from sin and accept God. He stated he was ready to go to Jesus, saying, "It is much better that I die today and go to glory than to live out my sinful life and go to hell."

As he stood with the rope around his neck, he uttered his last words: "I ain't scared one bit, hanging ain't anything. Tell Aunt Julia I'm going home on the evening train."

After he was hanged and pronounced dead, Ellen Curren, the 16-year-old sister of Thomas Curren, entered the enclosure and stared at the body, leaving with an expression of pity on her face and tears in her eyes.

The Chattanooga Daily Times stated: "The last legal hanging in Roane County previous to this occurred in 1860 when Joseph Jones . . . was executed for outraging his mistress."

803rd Civil Engineering Squadron 12 Strategic Aerospace Division Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona 8 May 1967 - 31 July 1968

by: PETE SEMANICK The duty assignment at Davis-Monthan was a pleasant surprise for me. In my past assignments within the fire department, returning senior NCO’s were lucky to have a job as the top five positions (Fire Chief, Deputy Chief , 3 Assistance Chiefs) were civilian personnel. I learned that my job here would be Deputy Fire Chief, which meant that my past eighteen years experience would be fully utilized.

I soon discovered that much was needed to improve morale and to upgrade the department to a higher level of efficiency. My initial plans were to go along with the present system until I got a good feel for what actually was needed. This was a typical stateside department with “old timers” in charge. The Fire Chief, Lawrence Parker, had been in the department for 36 years having worked himself up through the ranks.

Most of his staff had also been in the fire service many years and were due to retire.

This was a very active air force installation and was one of the homes to the infamous U-2 Dragon (spy surveillance) aircraft.

The primary mission was the 4453rd Combat Crew Training Wing of F-4C Phantom aircraft for advanced training for combat ready pilots.

Eighteen Titan missile silos surrounded the base under the command of the 390th Strategic Missile Wing.

An F-106 Delta Dart detachment unit with constant 24-hour alert readiness was located at the far end of the flight line.

In addition, several C-130 Hercules in-flight drone carrying aircraft were U-2 DRAGON located here .

But the big attraction was the nearby Material Air Command (now called The Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group - “AMARG”) aircraft storage area containing upwards of 5000-mothballed aircraft from all military, federal and NASA agencies- referred to as the “bone yard”. Even though these aircraft were mothballed, if required due to an all out war effort, many of these planes could be placed back into service at a moment’s notice.

After my first tour of the base, the ubiquitous wooden WWII structures reminded me of Nellis AFB, but unlike Nellis we had few fires in these bone-dry facilities. Most occupancies such as commissary, base exchange, chapel, warehouses, headquarters, vehicle maintenance, etc. were housed in these older buildings, but right after I arrived several major new permanent building projects were started. It appeared D-M was going to be a major installation in the future.

And then you simply fill the bottle with water, and you have an excellent self watering system that will water your plants deep in the roots. This transformed garden waterer is excellent to fertilize the roots of plants too.

What NOT to do with your dog 1. Dog runs in road. Owner comes out of house, stops at doorstep and starts screaming at the dog, very emotional. Dog ignores human. Dogs do not listen to unstable beings.

When one dog wishes to tell something to another dog, it does not scream and yell.

2. Dog barks at human to beg for the food the human is eating, human absentmindedly hands the dog a piece. This is not respectful in the canine world. A lower member of the pack would never dream of barking at a pack leader while eating.

3. Dog sees another dog and starts to bark. Human tells dog, "No" and proceeds to pet their dog on the head, giving affection. This is really like saying, "Good dog for barking."

Some mixed signals going on there.

4. Dog is on a leash and pulls the leash tight to sniff where it pleases as the owner talks to another human. This is bad leash manners. Asking the dog to wait patiently would provide the dog with a mental challenge, which all dogs need.

5. Owner corrects the dog by yelling the dog’s name over and over again, but never actually addresses the dog with any type of body language. The dog does not know what it is the owner wants. There is no follow-through. Human proceeds to have a conversation in human words with the dog, stating they are going to put the dog in the truck. This human needs to speak "Dog," not "Human." On top of that, one should only use a dog’s name for positive things so the dog associates his name with something good.

6. Owner allows their small dog to greet a human by putting his paws on a person's leg. In the dog world this is not a respectful way to greet another being. There is no difference between that 5-pound Yorkie and that 90-pound German Shepherd in regards to the meaning behind the behavior.

7. Owner corrects a dog long after the deed was done and the dog has moved onto other thoughts. Whatever the dog is doing at the moment you make the correction is what the dog will think you are upset about.

8. Dogs only being corrected 'some' of the time. Bark bark... Allowed... Bark bark. Dog’s name yelled. Bark bark. But no real correction, no body language used. No followthrough, no real communication, no consistency. When you are not consistent your dog will not listen to you as she will know that 'sometimes' she is allowed. Also, the dog’s name should not be used in the correction.

9. Dog is walking slightly in front of the person holding the leash. Then the human expects the dog to ignore other dogs when LETTING the dog lead. Mixed signals—you are my leader, but listen to what I say. Do you know how confusing that is for a dog?

10. Humans approaching a gate, or doorway, and let the dog nose its way first. The leash being loose does not make it OK. Dog should be sent back a step and be watching for the human’s cue for the dog’s turn—no pushing.

11. Humans attempting to go first through an entranceway, telling the dog to wait but never following through. Dog paused, but still had her snoot in the doorway and was tense in posture, showing she did not give in to the idea. Dog should have stepped back and relaxed before the human allowed the dog to pass.

12. Owner picks up small dog. Dog wiggles and/or whines to get down and the owner obeys, reinforcing the dog’s power over the human.

13. Dog barks at another dog. Human corrects dog by saying "No." Dog turns head to avoid eye contact with the human. Human turns the dog’s head back to get the dog to look at them, thinking the dog should look at them when being reprimanded. When actually the dog turning away was the dog communicating to the human that the dog did not wish to challenge them. In the human world making eye contact when being spoken to is respect, however in the dog world staring straight into one’s eyes can be taken as a challenge.

Rockwood Memories

Favorites Contest By: Ray Collet

This is a reprint from an article in my book, Rockwood Memories Vol l.

A few years ago , in my Rockwood Memories article, I ran a "Favorites contest similar to the ones that a lot of newspapers are now running.

Mine had to do with the favorites from the 40's , 50's, and 60's. The response from phone calls and emails was tremendous and I thank each and every one of you. A few even came in from Florida and I was worried about 'Hanging Chads" as in a recent presidential election, but our ballots were much simpler and a lot more important., Well, my wife and I are all dressed up in our finest formal attire, a few friends are over, so we can get right to the winners. "THE ENVELOPES PLEASE !!!

First off was the trivia question asking who was the county doctor who gave us those dreaded shots.

The answer was Dr. Flye. It was answered first by Patti Pugh, the next correct guess was Marjorie Hamby Burdette, followed by Louise Nash, the next caller was Jim Barnes. At the time of the contest, Jim was living in Dayton, Tn. where he was serving as vice-mayor.

In the Best Burger Category, there was little doubt as to who would win. Bert Brown's Cafe was the overwhelming choice and rightly so. The favorite Hot Dog winner was Archie's Drive-In. Archie's barely beat out the Pool Room for that honor. Floyd's Cafe and Ralph's Drive-In also had a good number of votes.

The Pool Room came out on top for the Best Chili. Others gathering votes were Brown's Cafe, Foster Pelfrey's Canteen, the B & J Cafe, Ragal's Restaurant, and Floyd's Cafe.

The winner in the Favorite Department Store was Bernard's, with Penny's and Dewey's a close second and third.

The Best Grocery Store was a tie between King's, Mee's with Bristow's and Hickey's getting a number of votes.

In the Auto Dealer category, Molyneaux was the winner followed by Copper and Cotton Bacon, and Hutcherson Motors.

The winner as the Favorite Barber was the flattop king, Tom ( Prune) Pierce. Johnny Martin received a lot of votes also, as well as Luke Brandon.

The Majorette category had a lot of vote getters and leading the way was Arlene Johnson. Others who received a number of votes were Judy Owings, Judy Thomas, Jewel Rader, June Blake, (if you want your child to be an outstanding majorette, start her name with a J) The Favorite Cheerleader category also had a lot of vote getters. Winning was Micki Hickey. Others getting votes were Martha Alexander, Sherry Corea, Mary Lynn Evans, Carole Haga, and Patti Roberts.

The Favorite Football Player ended in a three way tie between Tom Pemberton, Tommy Roberts, and Johnny Lawson. There were so many great football players in Rockwood's history that it would be virtually Impossible to break this tie so I never voted in this one. Others were Carl Melhorn, Jim Archey, Cedar Mee, David Simcox, Barry Norton and Tom Evans. These are certainly all worthy of being chosen as number one.

In the Boy's Basketball voting, Stewart Siler led the way, followed in no particular order by Tommy Starr, Barry Norton, Johnny Ward and Eddie Bilbrey.

In the Girls Basketball category, Barbara Mead came out as the winner with Sylvia Simpson a close second. They were followed by Sandra Coates, Gail Cooper, Betsy Evans, Nancy Ingram and Margie Pair.

As our favorite Summer Activity, the Rockwood Beach ran away with the voting, followed by the skating rink, baseball, fishing, and bike riding.

And as expected , the Most Unforgettable Person in Rockwood really had a lot of different vote getters. Among them were Dr. Wilson, Dr. Phillips, Dr. John R. Neal, Professor T.R. Eutsler, Professor Middlebrooks, Tom Harper Evans, Mildred Lindsey, Tom Perton Earl ( Hotdog) Long and many more.

The winner in this category was a tie between Jack Trammel and Dan Franklin, both truly loved b y Rockwood. Thanks for your votes, emails, and telephone calls. The interest and participation in this was fantastic. I never knew so many people are reading this column. I hope this will spur more interest in Rockwood and keep us classmates more in touch with each other..

Make July 4th sparklers safe

Poke a hole in the bottom of a large plastic cup and it becomes a Sparkler Shield for the little ones. Insert the sparkler into the hole, then shield your hand with the inside of the cup. Brilliant and safe!!!

Great uses for old socks

1) Place corn starch into the toe of a sock, tie or sew the sock closed at the ankle and use to gently tap onto a baby’s bottom to help heal or prevent diaper rash. The corn starch will filter through the sock leaving a powdered layer on the baby’s skin. Use a very loose weave sock for this.

2) Place baby powder into the toe of a sock, tie or sew the sock closed at the ankle and use to tap powder onto skin. Instant powder puff!

3) Turn a sports sock inside out, place your hand inside the sock and you have an instant and very effective duster! You can go over corners, into grooves and do a thorough dusting. When finished, simply toss into the washer and reuse again!

4) When polishing wood, turn a sports sock inside out and place your hand inside. Lightly dampen with furniture oil and rub over the furniture. You will be amazed at how easy this is and how easily you can reach any area with the oiled cloth. When finished with the oil, place another sock on your hand to buff and polish the furniture to a shining finish.

5) To make a heat therapy rice bag, place 1 cup of white rice into the toe of a tightly knit sock and sew the top closed. Heat in the microwave for 20-30 seconds (depending on how hot you wish it) and you have an instant portable heating pad for sore muscles, inflamed sinuses, joint pain, labor pain, back pain and more. Reuse indefinitely!

6) Use a clean and bleached sock to strain jelly through, when finished throw away!

7) Have a pair of thick stockings with one good leg left? Cut the good leg off at the crotch and stuff with old socks, dryer link or other rags.

8) Socks make wonderful dish cloths! Cut the toe off of two socks that are roughly the same size. Cut the sock across the ankle and cut off the toe section too. You will now have a ‘tube’ with two open ends. Cut the tube to open it into one piece. Take both pieces, put smooth sides together (bumpy sides should be out) and pin together. Sew around all four edges; then sew an X from one corner to another and you have an instant dishcloth or scrub cloth that often surpasses store-bought ones.

9) Have wet shoes? Place clay cat litter (not the clumping modern kind) into two socks, tie or sew the ends closed and place inside the shoes. The old fashioned cat litter made with clay will help absorb the moisture so the shoes will dry quicker.

Mother, Interrupted: Paper Plates & Rainy Days

June is the Birthday Month, the one month out of the year when it seems like every man, woman, and child celebrates the sunshiny beginning of their life on this planet. Except me, of course, because I was born during the cold and dreary month of February, also known as the “You Can’t Ever Have a Pool Party for Your Birthday� month. I’ve always had a little bitterness towards those with summer birthdays, and I’ll tell you why.

I don’t think it’s fair that we don’t get to pick our birthdays. Some birthdays are great to have, like my daughter’s (June 24), because they fall evenly spaced between major holidays.

This means no one can wrap your birthday presents in Christmas wrapping paper (unless they’re just really insane) or, even worse, give you one gift and say it’s supposed to cover both your birthday and the other holiday. I have a bit of a complex concerning this.

Because my birthday falls a week after Valentine’s Day, it’s not uncommon for me to receive lame teddy bears holding roses and other pink and red heart-shaped merchandise as birthday presents. This is just unacceptable to me. Instead of rushing to the store last minute on Valentine’s Day and getting enough candy, stuffed animals, and flowers to cover V-Day and my B-Day all at once, get a plan together. I want you to rush to the store on Valentine’s Day and also on my birthday, getting me presents that are clearly not heart shaped or made of chocolate (okay, fine, I’ll accept anything made of chocolate) just because it feels more special that way. And maybe because it serves you right for being such a procrastinator (says me, the World’s Worst—or best?—Procrastinator).

Kids that had summer birthdays may have been living it up with their pool parties, suntans, and beach bums, but they never got to experience the extreme joy of having their mom bring cupcakes or donuts to school on their birthday. Not that having sugary treats at school is nearly as fun as a pool party, but it’s the only thing I’ve got, so I’m flaunting it.

I would also like to make it known that having a birthday that occasionally falls on President’s Day is way more exciting than it sounds, just in case you summer birthday babies were starting to feel sorry for me and my unfortunate month of birth. I don’t want to point any fingers, because this whole birthday thing is just a roll of the dice, but I’m looking at you, Mama. Also Dad. Would it have killed you to conceive a few months later?

I can’t spend too much time being bitter and jealous of summer babies because my daughter has a summer birthday. I can’t help but be excited about this little twist of fate. Finally, pool parties that don’t take place indoors are possible! At last, I can—I mean, my daughter can—have a beach-themed birthday cake with flip flops and a smiling sun on it! And, with any luck at all, there will be no turtlenecks within a 50 mile radius of her birthday parties (some of my most tragic childhood birthday party memories involve turtlenecks. Don’t ask).

It’s almost like I’m getting a second chance at having a great birthday, except it’s not actually my birthday, and I get to pay for everything and slave over cupcakes. Isn’t that what parenthood in a nutshell is? You do double the work, get half the credit, and still somehow end up feeling like you won the lottery of life. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to get started on that beach-themed birthday cake (pick one out of Baskin Robbin’s catalog). Love, Mom Debra Carpenter is a novice mother, wife, and college student. You need to use aluminum foil in the bottom if you have an electric range. With a gas range, do not put the foil on the bottom. Place it on the lower rack to catch the spills. Other wise you restrict the flow.

Centuries of Jeans

Jeans have a long history, unlike most fashion fads. The fabrics denim and jean originated in Europe in the late 16th century.

18th century - American mills begin producing their own jean. Laborers wear the durable clothing.

19th Century - San Francisco dry goods merchant Levi Strauss produces “waist overalls”—the early name for jeans. They become a hit with gold miners eager to strike it rich in California. In 1886, Strauss adds a brown leather patch on the back of his waist overalls. The label, which shows a pair of jeans being pulled between two horses, is still affixed to Levi’s jeans.

20th Century - American men, eager to imitate movie stars such as John Wayne and Gary Cooper, who play rugged, waist-overalls-wearing cowboys in 1930s Hollywood Westerns, proudly don the pants.

1940s - American troops pack their waist overalls when they travel overseas to fight in World War II. The trend catches on in Europe. Lee and Wrangler make their own jeans to compete with Levi’s.

1950s - Jeans, no longer called waist overalls, became a symbol of the teenage rebel, particularly after James Dean wears them in the 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause.

Some schools ban jeans.

1960s - Jeans dominate college campuses. Students began to personalize their jeans with paint, embroidery and patches.

1980s - Designer jeans, such as Sassoon, Jordache and Calvin Klein, emerge.

Straight-leg, tight-fitting styles give jeans a new look.

1990s and on - Jeans are everywhere—on babies, parents, teachers and executives—and in a wide variety of styles, from boot cut to low-rise, bell bottoms to stone washed.

Stock Market Investors Will be Destroyed by the FED Stock market investors don't seem to know or care that the main thing propping up their investments is the same thing that will ultimately destroy them.

And that the longer the situation continues, the bigger the mess will be when it finally blows up.

We're talking, of course, about Federal Reserve, Bank of England, Bank of Japan, and People's Bank of China monetary policy. It is "experimental." It is "bold." It is also reckless and potentially catastrophic. Lending

money at negative real interest rates creates grotesque distortions in the market. Savers get nothing for their trouble. In fact, they lose money in real (inflation-adjusted) terms.

So they shift to speculating on stocks. The stock market goes higher... but it is not a market you can trust. It is being driven by the printing of trillions of dollars, yen, pounds, and renminbi. Unfortunately the central bank policy hasn't been able to budge slumping economic fundamentals. Any attempted exit by central banks in the absence of a genuine economic recovery will be somewhere on the continuum between problematic and impossible. It is also unnatural for a central bank to print up new money and use it, Indirectly, to pay for government operations. If you could do that without penalty – that is, if you could pay for real things with fake money – you would do it all day long.

Normally, central banks don't even try. They know the penalties make it not worth the fleeting enjoyment.

Do you see any penalties?? The fact that the penalties have not yet been assessed doesn't mean they don't exist. The longer we go without paying them, the greater they will eventually be. At present, the feds get only rewards. First, lower interest rates make it easier to finance federal debt. Second, low debt interest payments reduce the outstanding debt in real (inflation-adjusted) terms. Third, the Fed's Treasury bond buying indirectly funds government spending – to the tune of about $45 billion per month. Fourth, the lack of yields in the bond market corrals investors into stocks. This pushes stock prices higher. Rich bankers and rich campaign contributors get richer.

But the markets won't stay in this "sweet spot" for long. The time will come when the Fed will have to reverse its policies or face substantially higher inflation. Instead of buying bonds, the Fed will have to sell them. But to whom?

Fortune magazine reports: Warren Buffett has a piece of advice for Ben Bernanke: It's easier to buy than it is to sell. Buffett, speaking on Saturday at Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting in Omaha, said he is worried about what will happen when the Federal Reserve tries to wind down its recent efforts to stimulate the economy. Via a program nicknamed "QE," short for "quantitative easing," the Fed in recent years has bought up over $2 trillion in bonds in order to lower interest rates and promote borrowing and investment. Some have warned that when the Fed decides to sell its trove of bonds, or even just stops adding to it, stock markets could tank. Rising interest rates could cause banks to lose billions, perhaps igniting another financial crisis. Buffett says we don't know what will happen, but he is concerned.

"QE is like watching a good movie, because I don't know how it will end," says Buffett. "Anyone who owns stocks will reevaluate his hand when it happens, and that will happen very quickly"..."People make different decisions when they can borrow for practically nothing... It's a huge experiment."

Charlie Munger, Buffett's long-term chief lieutenant, who was also talking at the meeting, says he worries about more than just inflation. "What has happened in macroeconomics has surprised pretty much everyone," says Munger. "Given that history, economists should be more cautious when they print money in massive amounts."
