SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY By O.I. Seenya Only in Harriman would you see a groundhog with a can stuck on it's head!!! A black bear off Patton Ferry Road in Kingston. Womans heart very pleased to see a younger gentleman feeding two stray cats in the vacant lot beside the McDonalds in Harriman. The cats were hungry and waiting for him. The woman was glad to see that the younger generation isn't lost and we still have some good hearted people.
A Little Motherly Advice About Daughters 1. Show her that even at the age of four an especially difficult day can be made better with a bubble bath. 2. Realize that she'll know when it's time for the training wheels to come off. (This will be true pretty much her whole life.) 3. Don't think doing everything right will eliminate confrontations, tears, accusations, and emotional outbursts. In fact, these often mean you are doing everything right. 4. You'll always be surprised by her stages. Even though you went through them too. 5. Go on a picnic together, just the two of you. Even if it's in your backyard. 6. Keep a journal about her. Give it to her when she's eighteen. 7. Praise her for her abilities and accomplishments, not her looks. 8. Teach her that being kind to others can be one of her greatest attributes. 9. Never in your presence let her make fun of an older person. 10. Teach her to respect her body at all times. If she doesn't her future dates may not either.
Practice makes perfect unless you’re trying to be spontaneous.

Red Northern’s Junkyard In the middle of downtown Emory Gap was the largest junkyard I had ever seen at that time. It was located on the hill where Seaton’s Thrift Store and Save-a-Lot are now located and where the first Wal-Mart in Roane County was. I heard they gave Red $50,000 for all the land, which was a fortune back then. It was across the highway from my Daddy’s garage and there was also a parts store there. I remember walking across the road with Daddy several times for him to buy parts for a vehicle he was working on in his garage. I also remember fan belts hanging everywhere and seems like it had a dirt floor, or maybe old wood. Red had two German Shepherds (what we called police dogs) that were twice as big as I was. He kept them in a shed that joined the store, and those dogs loudly barked the whole time someone was in the store. Now these dogs probably wouldn’t have hurt a flea, but I was terrified of them, and I often wondered if all the men that were always in the store would protect me if they escaped, or if they’d run and leave me there for them to eat me up. At 5:00 p.m., Red would closed his gate and let the dogs run loose inside the fence. You ever heard of a junkyard dog? Well, Red had two of them that we thought would eat you up and maul your bones if you even got close to the fence. Needless to say, when he had to walk alongside the fence, we kept our distance. I always heard that Red was a hard businessman, but he reminded me of an old sailor, kinda like Popeye, maybe because I remember he had tattoos. Nonetheless, every time I went into the store with Daddy, Red had a slight smile for me and a look of kindness on his face, that no one else but me saw.
Where Are They Buried? Marilyn Monroe 6-1-1926 to 8-5-1962
Cause of Death: Accidental overdose of prescription drugs. Gravesite: Westwood Village Memorial Park (Santa Monica, Calif.) Directions to Cemetery: This little cemetery holds numerous celebrities and is particularly located behind the office complex at 10850 Wilshire Blvd., just about 1/2 mile East of I-405. As you stand in the cemetery yard and look toward the cemetery office, on your far left is a series of small rooms with crypts. Marilyn's crypt is several yards to the left of the Room of Prayer.

Top 5 Independence Day Movies 5. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) This iconic film features a Boy Rangers leader who gets picked as a replacement for a decease U.S. senator on the flip of a coin. As a senator, he proposes a bill for land for the Boy Rangers, but the land is already part of a shady bill supported by the corrupt governor who chose him. When false evidence is used to get Smith kicked out, he launches a massive filibuster to clear his name. 4. Dave (1993) A comedy about a temp agency owner becoming President shows the power of a newcomer and idealist on modern day politics. When the President goes into a coma, the Chief of Staff schemes to have look-a-like Dave Kovic take his place. A guy who has no business being where he is may be just the right person for the job. 3. JFK (1991) It follows the 1969 trial of New Orleans businessman for his part in the assassination of J.F.K. The prosecutor used the trial as a way to re-examine the official story, that Lee Harvey Oswald killed JFK, and he did it all by himself. The conspiracy of JFK’s death involved the CIA, the Mafia, the military-industrial complex, Secret Service, FBI, and Kennedy’s vice-president, L.B. Johnson. This account of the event is told so well, it’d make even Oswald a believer. 2. Air Force One (1997) Starring Harrison Ford as President James Marshall. After giving a speech about the government’s policy not to negotiate with terrorists, Air Force One is hijacked by Soviet terrorists. With a full crew, including his wife and daughter, Marshall has to find a way to take back control of the plane by force. There’s something invigorating about seeing our commander in chief kicking butt. Now get off my plane! 1. Independence Day (1996) Aliens come to destroy the planet on our day to barbecue. We again have a President who gets right into the action. The sci-fi film has a great cast, exciting plot, impressive visuals, and one of the best fake Presidential speeches ever. “Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!”

according to the almanac
start planning your fall garden
In the first half of July, you can still plant okra, pole beans, lima beans, and corn. Also, plant cucumbers, squash, and snap beans. Just be sure that enough water is provided. Be sure to harvest your fruit and vegetables continuously before any animals can get to them. Make sure that the garden is well mulched to conserve moisture. Water early in the morning and deeply to avoid drought stress. Lightly fertilize your flower beds to encourage their growth. Bulbs that can be planted in the middle of the summer include gladiolus and butterfly lily. As long as they stay moist, you can plant annuals such as coleus, ornamental pepper, and crossandra. Continue planting palms if it’s still wet and rainy. Support large palms with braces for 6 to 8 months after planting. Remove any dead flowers on your plants to encourage new growth. Plant a pumpkin for Halloween! Prune your shrubs and trees if it is necessary. Do not heavily prune your spring-flowering shrubs. Remove any dead or diseased plants from your garden immediately. You can replace them with new plants. Do not neglect your container plants; they need more water than those plants in the ground. Lawn insects can be a problem. Before treating, ensure that it’s not a moisture or disease problem.

How to have a good, CHEAP 4th of July celebration As we all know, gas prices are completely ridiculous. Trying to figure out what you can do on a holiday weekend is already stressful, but when you add the cost up on traveling during the holiday it will down right want to make you pull out your hair. So maybe you can't escape to the beach, or head up to the mountains for the weekend. Still though there are many things you can do in your own town. Here‘s some hints and ideas that maybe won't cost you an arm and a leg. Find a place to have a picnic really close by. Most towns offer a recreational park. Get up that morning, cook some wieners while you grab the kids some fun outdoor toys like Frisbees, ball and gloves, kites, and even their bikes. Pack a fun lunch with the hot dogs, chips, drinks, and something sweet of course, but allow the kids to help you decide on the menu. Don't forget the blanket and maybe a good book for yourself to read while the kids are enjoying the outdoors. Not in the mood for a picnic? Go camping. Make a whole weekend of it. This way at night everyone can sit by the campfire and tell stories and roast marshmallows. Don't forget to pack up the fishing poles! Even if you don't have a campsite near your home then don't worry, you can do the same in your own backyard. Just make sure that you treat the backyard like you would a campground. Don't allow the kids to keep running in and out of the house. The more emphasis you put on how the event will be the more they will adapt to it. So you aren't an outdoor type family? That's fine, there is always something to do in your town that you may not even be aware of. Check out your local Chamber of Commerce website for upcoming events. Make sure you pick an event that the whole family will love to do. Also while you are there don't forget to check on prices. Sometimes you will plan an outing for your family and once you get there didn't budget for the right amount. Have a zoo, aquarium or amusement park in your town? Head on down to those places. Sometimes you can even get online and print out discount tickets for the attractions. Also, most of these places usually have firework displays at the end of the day. If fireworks are all you really care about seeing during the Fourth of July, find out where in your town they will be holding them at. Pack a blanket, stop off at your favorite fast food dive on your way there and once you get to the destination have a picnic with the food your brought. In a van? Pop open the back and lay the blanket down inside for the kids to sit. In a truck? Do the same thing in the bed. In a car? Well if you don't mind, then put the blanket on the hood and sit on that. I know most of you think that would ruin your car, but really if you’re just sitting, it shouldn't. No matter what your mood is, or taste can be, your town can always have some really great ideas going on. You don't always have to travel a long distance, and spend tons of money just to spend some together time on the holiday. Just remember that if you plan enough in advance, and tap into all your local resources, then you can make an enjoyable Fourth of July!
ROCKWOOD MEMORIES
6 The Roane Reader
July 2012
By Ray Collett
Our friend, Jo An Howard Gaines, (Class of 1953) who is living in Hawaii, sent me an email recently.....She wrote....Ray, While de cluttering, I discovered this, written by Harry Shamhart, ten years ago! Priceless history of his memories of Rockwood. Perhaps a model for more of us to not only write our own memories but find 'living treasures' and ask them to commit their memories to history. Jo An Howard Gaines Thanks Jo An, I am sure our readers will love to share in Mr. Shamhart's memories... Mr. Shamhart attended RHS from 1931 and graduated in 1935. To the best of our knowledge is still living in Signal Mountain, TN. This is what Mr. Shamhart wrote Dec.13, 1999.....MEMORIES OF ROCKWOOD Harry Shamhart Before age 7, I remember, Dad, Wilmer, and next door neighbor, Charlie Acuff going bird hunting (Bob White quail). Mr. Charlie was the Director of the Boy Scouts of America Council Area in which Rockwood was located. They would let me watch as they cleaned the birds for mother and Miss Reece, to further prepare for cooking. Miss Reece was the daughter of E.T.Ingram Sr. Sometimes they would bring home rabbits and squirrels. We raised a few chickens and one time when the setting hens hatched a new brood of biddies, I slipped into the small chicken wire enclosure to play with the biddies. A sizeable black snake had the same idea, but I am sure his intent was to have lunch. After a few screams mother arrived and I suppose her fears were as great as mine. Mr. Charlie was home, heard the commotion and dispatched the snake with a pistol shot to the head. It need not be said that was my last trip into the cage with the biddies. Brother Jack and I, and I believe Carl Mee Jr.,( he lived across the street) decided to construct an in-ground cooking pit. This required removal of dirt for the fire pit which required using a pick to loosen the dirt and a shovel to remove it. I was selected as the pick user and Jack was the shoveler. After making some progress in digging the hole, Jack started shoveling while I was still picking --- the result was I hit him in the head !!! Mother took us to George's Pharmacy where Dr. Bowers examined the wound and declared it was not serious. The in-ground cooking pit project ended! Mother took me along when Jack entered the first grade of school. The school was located on the second floor of the building that still stands on the SW corner of the intersection of Kingston Ave and Rockwood St. I believe the date was September 1919. Sundays and holidays we would go to grandmother Acuff's house, located at 26 S. Chamberlain Ave. We would usually have lunch and family gatherings. Mother was the only married child of grandmother who was called Miss Mollie by all of her friends. One afternoon, everyone was sitting on the front porch talking and watching Jack and I play. I was jumping on a door that was on the ground for repair, when dad called for me to stop. His concern was that the door would be further damaged. I continued, (it must have been fun) soon fell and sprained an ankle. I believe there were a few taps with a small switch as well as the sprain. The spur railroad track that connected the Southern RR to the Roane Iron Company ran alongside Miss Mollie's house. A small steam engine that powered the molten slag containers from the blast furnaces to the "cinder dump" also traveled on the spur to move supplies to and product from the "Furnace" A wooden fence enclosed the house property ; it was fun to climb the fence and watch the engine (we called it "The Dinky") as it traveled up and down the rail spur.. The engineer and fireman would wave to us. Steam engines were coal fired at that time and under heavy loads emitting small hot coal cinders along with smoke and steam. One morning Jack and I were on the fence and as the "Dinky" moved uphill under heavy load, a hot cinder fell on the back of Jack's neck. He immediately placed a hand on it and held it --- screaming and running to the house for help --- I remember the small scars on his neck and hand. (continued next month)

And that’s when the fight started….. One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift... The next year, I didn't buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, "Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!" And that's how the fight started...... My wife and I were watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, 'Do you want to have Sex?' 'No,' she answered.. I then said, 'Is that your final answer?' She didn't even look at me this time, simply saying, 'Yes..' So I said, "Then I'd like to phone a friend." And that's when the fight started... I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. "I'll have the rump steak, rare, please." He said, "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?" "Nah, she can order for herself." And that's when the fight started..... My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reunion, and she kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table. I asked her, "Do you know him?" "Yes", she sighed, "He's my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

since." "My God!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?" And then the fight started... When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, making beer... Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp. My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds." I bought her a bathroom scale. And then the fight started...... I rear-ended a car this morning...the start of a REALLY bad day! The driver got out of the other car, and he was a DWARF!! He looked up at me and said 'I am NOT Happy!' So I said, 'Well, which one ARE you then?' That's how the fight started. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Household Hints
Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking. To make scrambled eggs or omelets rich, add a couple spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat. Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic, and at the end of the recipe if you want a stronger taste of garlic. Reheat leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, on med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. Easy Deviled Eggs: Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag, seal, mash ,add remainder of ingredients, keep mashing, mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw the bag away! To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster. Newspaper weeds away: Plant your plants in the ground, work the nutrients in your soil. Then wet newspapers, put layers around the plants overlapping as you go, cover with mulch, and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers. To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant : squirrels won't come near it. Goodbye Fruit Flies: To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever! Get Rid of Ants: Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,' can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

HATTIE SHILLINGS
Absolutely Awesome Grilled Onions Very large sweet onions Beef bouillon cubes or granules
Brown sugar
Slice onions in slices approximately 1/3 inch thick. Be careful to keep the onions together and not to separate the "rings." On a small square of aluminum foil, place onion slice, 1 heaping teaspoon of brown sugar, and 1 small beef bouillon cube. (If your cubes are larger, cut them in half). Fold the foil up tightly over the onion slice making sure to seal all of the edges . Throw them on your hot grill for approximately 20-30 minutes. The foil will puff up like Jiffy Pop! They should be cooked all of the way through, and have a wonderful caramelized appearance.
Patio Potatoes 4 potatoes, sliced 1 pint sour cream
1 envelope dry onion soup mix 4 tablespoons milk
Mix soup, milk and sour cream. Place potato slices on foil and cover with sour cream mix. Close foil securely. Grill 45 to 50 minutes.
Tomato & Mozzarella Sandwiches 1 loaf sandwich bread 2 lbs. mozzarella cheese, ¼ inch thick 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 4 tomatoes, sliced, 1/4 inch thick
Using a 2-inch round cookie cutter (depending on size of tomatoes), cut out bread and mozzarella. Season tomatoes with salt and pepper. Sandwich 1 tomato slice and 1 mozzarella slice between 2 slices of bread. Repeat with remaining tomatoes, mozzarella, and bread to make 16 sandwiches. Preheat a grill to medium, or heat a grill pan over medium heat. Brush outsides of bread with butter. Grill sandwiches until golden brown and mozzarella is soft but not completely melted, about 5 minutes per side.
Grilled banana split Cut a small piece off the curved side of 4 unpeeled bananas so they'll sit level, then make a deep slit down the center of each through the peel; place on separate sheets of foil. Open the slits and brush the inside of each banana with melted butter, then sprinkle with sugar and 1 ounce chopped semisweet chocolate; fold up the foil. Grill the packets over high heat until the chocolate melts, 6 to 8 minutes (don't worry if the peel turns brown). Open the peels and top the bananas with ice cream, whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry.

"Life Lessons Learned" By: Rita Webster
1. PDA'S-- (Public Display's of Affection) I hate to see couples who can't keep their hands off of each other while in a public place. Please! You feeling all over each other, or kissing and slobbering over someone's face, do you think I enjoy seeing that? Go back home or get a motel room. Just keep it out of my face. I don't want to see it! 2. Shoes Off-- In my opinion it is the height of rudeness to invite me over to your home and then meet me at the door and ask that I take off my shoes before entering your house and stepping onto your precious, clean carpet. #1 My shoes are not caked with mud, # 2 If you're that particular of your home why want company in the first place? and # 3 I won't be back! 3. ER'S-- Why does it take having to spend 6 hours in an emergency room on something that can be totally taken care of and 30 minutes? Ridiculous! There is no excuse you can give me to justify me sitting in a small cubicle twiddling my thumbs for the other 5 1/2 hours. None whatsoever. 4. Pets-- Ladies, please. Don't put a dress, flowers, jewerly, hats or scarfs on your dog. It is an ANIMAL, it's not HUMAN. It's more pathetic than anything else to see you treat your pet as if it's your child. Makes me sick..... 5. Being Late-- Don't come bouncing into church or Sunday school 15 minutes late and disrupt the class or the sermon acting as though you don't have a care in the world. Have some respect for others, please. The world doesn't revolve around you believe it or not. Get your lazy butt out of bed on Sunday mornings so you'll have plenty of time to get ready. If you can't do that, just stay home.
1. Don't let them scare you. 2. Try to live your life so that when you die, even the undertaker will be sorry. 3. Only through trial and suffering is the soul strengthened. 4. A sad soul can kill you far quicker than a germ. 5. Be Simple. 6. If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember what you said. 7. Don't compromise yourself. You're all you've got. 8. Be sure you're right--then go ahead. 9. You're not really old until regrets take the place of dreams. 10. If you're going to do something, do it right.
Letter from a Mother to a Daughter: "My dear girl, the day you see I’m getting ...old, I ask you to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I’m going through. If when we talk, I repeat the same thing a thousand times, don’t interrupt to say: “You said the same thing a minute ago”... Just listen, please. Try to remember the times when you were little and I would read the same story night after night until you would fall asleep. When I don’t want to take a bath, don’t be mad and don’t embarrass me. Remember when I had to run after you making excuses and trying to get you to take a shower when you were just a girl? When you see how ignorant I am when it comes to new technology, give me the time to learn and don’t look at me that way... remember, honey, I patiently taught you how to do many things like eating appropriately, getting dressed, combing your hair and dealing with life’s issues every day... the day you see I’m getting old, I ask you to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I’m going through. If I occasionally lose track of what we’re talking about, give me the time to remember, and if I can’t, don’t be nervous, impatient or arrogant. Just know in your heart that the most important thing for me is to be with you. And when my old, tired legs don’t let me move as quickly as before, give me your hand the same way that I offered mine to you when you first walked. When those days come, don’t feel sad... just be with me, and understand me while I get to the end of my life with love. I’ll cherish and thank you for the gift of time and joy we shared. With a big smile and the huge love I’ve always had for you, I just want to say, I love you... my darling daughter. "

What do your dreams mean?
Bites To see a bite in your dream forewarns of danger from someone who wish you harm, either physical or financial. Be careful of people who surround you. To dream that you are being bitten represents your vulnerability regarding some unresolved issues or emotions. You may be pestered by a problem or obstacle. The dream may also be a metaphor indicating that you have bitten off more than you chew. Perhaps you have too much to handle. Tornado To see a tornado in your dream suggests that you are experiencing some extreme emotional outbursts and temper tantrums. Is there a situation or relationship in your life that may be potentially destructive? To dream that you are in a tornado means that you are feeling overwhelmed and out of control. Your plans will be filled with much complications and you will be met with a series of disappointments. Naked To dream that you are naked denotes fear of being found out and exposed over your activities. You feel that you are being misjudged. To dream that you suddenly discover your nudity and are trying to cover up signifies your vulnerability to a situation. Bathroom To dream that you are in the bathroom relates to your instinctual urges. You may be experiencing some burdens/feelings and need to "relieve yourself". Alternatively, a bathroom symbolizes purification and self-renewal. You need to cleanse yourself, both emotionally and psychologically. To dream that you are in a public restroom with no stalls or that there are a lot of people around while you are trying to do your business signifies your frustrations about getting enough privacy. You are always putting others ahead of your own needs. As a result, you are lacking a sense of personal space. Alternatively, the dream indicates that you are having difficulties letting go of old emotions. You are afraid that if you reveal these feelings, then others around you will judge and criticize you. To dream that you are in a bathroom meant for the opposite sex suggests that you are overstepping your boundaries. You have crossed the line in some situation.
Advice To Mothers With Daughters By: Rita Webster
1. Let her live her own dreams. Don't try to make her live yours. 2. Accept the fact she is daddy's little girl and always will be, 3. Realize that as a mom, your job is to decipher if she's crying because something is wrong or if she just wants attention. Men have never figured it out. 4. Help her memorize her full name, phone number, and address. This is as important as her abc's. 5. Remember the traditions you establish now will be passed on to her daughter. 6. Make her tea parties special events--invite all the teddy bears in the house, pretend to *eat* the pretend cookies she hands you, pour the pretend milk and put pretend sugar in your cup. Go the whole nine yards. 7. Display her art work as carefully as you display your other paintings. 8. Teach her to be a little kinder than necessary. 9. Put little love notes in her lunchbox. If she can't read, draw pictures. 10. Cherish the days when she looks up at you and says, "I love you."

Did you know?
Witches were never burned at the stake in Salem. During the Salem witch hunts, nineteen women and two dogs were hanged and one man was pressed to death under heavy stones. More than 150 others were imprisoned. Salem was not the only place in America where witches were put to death. Before the Salem trials began in 1692, sixteen people had been hanged as witches in New England. In 1693, the town of Salem freed the people still in jail on witchcraft charges. Within twenty years, the governor of Mass. cleared the victims of the witch hunts of all charges, and the colony's legislature made monetary reparations to the families.

I read a story about a shepherd in Switzerland. One of his sheep was in a pile of straw, and it seemed to be hurting. An onlooker saw that its leg was broken. She asked the shepherd how it happened. The shepherd said with some degree of sadness, "I broke it myself." He then began to explain. He said, "Of all the sheep in my flock, this was the most wayward. It would not obey my voice and would not follow when I was leading the flock. On more than one occasion, it wandered to the edge of a cliff. Not only was it disobedient, but it was leading some of the other sheep awfully close to the edge. Based on my experience with this kind of sheep, I knew I had no choice so I broke its leg. The next day I took food, and it tried to bite me, so I left it all alone for a couple of days. When I went back it was not only eager to eat, but licked my hand and showing every sign of submission and affection. Now, when this sheep is well, it will be the model sheep of my entire flock. No sheep will hear my voice so quickly nor follow me so closely. Instead of leading others close to danger, it will be an example of devotion and obedience. In a short while it will have learned obedience through its sufferings. None of us like trials. But if I understand correctly, God will allow us to go through trials - maybe to see His purpose for us, to prepare us for growth, or to help us see something more clearly than we ever thought possible. “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.” (Psalm 51:7-8) None of us like pain, difficulty or even severe challenges, but we need them. Why do we need them? Because they cause us to trust in the Lord more and rely on ourselves less. Paul, our brother of the first century, had trials and he speaks of them plainly. (2 Corinthians 12:8-10), “Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Greater faith and increased spiritual maturity come only by the pressure points of life that cause us to fix our eyes on God more keenly.

THE POWER OF TRIALS
Whether a man winds up with a nest egg, or a goose egg, depends a lot on the kind of chick he marries. Trouble in marriage often starts when a man gets so busy earnin' his salt he forgets his sugar. Too many couples marry for better, or for worse, but not for good. When a man marries a woman, they become one; the trouble starts when they try to decide which one. If a man has enough horse sense to treat his wife like a thoroughbred, she'll never turn into an old nag. On anniversaries, the wise husband always forgets the past - but never the present. A foolish husband says to his wife, "Honey, you stick to the washin', ironin', cookin' and scrubbin'. No wife of mine's gonna work." Many girls like to marry a military man - he can cook, sew, and make beds, is in good health, and already used to taking orders. Eventually you reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are? You know you are getting old, when everything either dries up or leaks. Old age is when former classmates are so gray and wrinkled and bald, they don't recognize you. Have a GREAT day and keep laughing! It's good for the soul. And remember my motto: Pay the undertaker with a bad check... A lie is a lie even if everyone believes it. The truth is the truth even if nobody believes it.

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national animal but was outvoted when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the bald eagle. Over an estimated 150 million hot dogs will be consumed on the 4th. That's roughly 1 dog for every two people in the U.S. Oddly, the majority of the nation's flags and patriotic paraphernalia in relation to the 4th of July is produced in China. Nearly $349 million dollars are used each year to import in the flags, banners, decorations, and emblems. The first 4th of July party held at the White House was in 1801. The 4th of July was not declared a national holiday until 1941. John Hancock was the only person to actually sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The other 55 signers did not sign it until August 2nd or even later. The youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence was 26-year-old Edward Rutledge. The oldest signer was Benjamin Franklin. He was 70. Most of the signers were in their 30s and 40s. When the United States became a country, there were approximately 2.5 million people living in the country. Today the population is around 304 million.

Wall Street's Latest Con Exposed
Faced with the reality of declining fees -- So instead of the ETF passively copying an index's performance, the new Mutual caused by departing customers who've Fund -- ETFs will be actively managed. You have to ask yourself, if they couldn't beat the unmanaged S&P 500 when they were Mutual Funds, how in the heck will they beat smartened up and awakened to the fact the S&P 500 as an ETF? that 75% of all fund managers cannot This is where their decades of marketing prowess will come to bear as they attempt beat the unmanaged S&P 500 -- The to sell a new generation of investors that they should abandon passive ETFs and Mutual Fund fee grabbers have used their embrace "professionally managed" ETFs. What Is The New Game in Town? promotional expertise and created a fresh Possibly the most egregious of these New Mutual Funds are the so-called HedgeFund Clone funds. It is shocking that two of these funds even made it to market. way of separating you from your cash. Mutual Fund Owners Have Become More Knowledgeable
This performance gap has caused disgruntled investors to shift their assets away from Mutual Funds and into passive funds called Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). They are called passive because they don't need an inept investment management team calling the stock picks. Instead, ETFs are set up to mimic the performance of an index like the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the S&P 500. Since 75% of Mutual Funds cannot beat the unmanaged S&P 500, many investors have started to sell their lack luster Mutual Funds and decided to buy Index ETFs. The growth in ETFs has been phenomenal because, unlike a Mutual Fund, the fees are low, ETFs offer pinpoint exposure to a specific index, many trade options, and you can buy and sell (as well as sell short) an ETF just the same way you can trade a stock.
A Dying Business
For the last 30+ years, the biggest fee generating machine on Wall Street has been in setting up and managing Mutual Funds. More individual investor money is committed to them than any other investment form. At the last count, 23% of America's investable wealth, $13 trillion, is in Mutual Funds. Many of these funds charge fees that range from a half a percentage point to well over 2% per year. That puts the fees generated from this industry into the hundreds of billions of dollars. But the big Mutual Fund fee party is about to come to an end.
The New Con Game Is Being Tuned Up
They know that they cannot compete with the passively managed ETF model... they see the writing on the wall: In 20 years' time their industry will be a shell of its former self. Their solution is to take their Mutual Fund managers and put them into their own actively managed ETFs.

Here’s how they operate... these new funds are designed to mimic the holdings of famous hedge fund managers. Remember, all the famous scams come with a little glamor, and what could be sexier than following America's smartest money managers? But here is the problem: The fund sponsors are attempting to replicate these holdings by following the 13F filings of the most successful funds.
What's a 13F?
Once a fund gets to a certain size, it must reveal its holdings via a 13F filing. However, the 13F filed with the SEC is always at least 45 days old! In some cases a fund can get a special waiver, postponing a 13F filing far further than 45 days. The other problem is that the hedge fund could be long gone out of that trade before they have to file another 13F letting the SEC know they sold the position!
Can you imagine a more terrible investment approach?
These two "mutant" ETFs are AlphaClone Alternative Alpha ETF (SYM: ALFA) and Global X Top Guru Holdings ETF (SYM: GURU). Not all mutant ETFs will be so easy to spot, and you can bet that hundreds more are on the way. So a good rule of thumb is to avoid any ETF that refers to itself as a "managed" ETF.

When I say "I am a Christian"
By: Irene Miles
By: Judy M. Reid
Who will cry for me now that I am gone? Who will see me down the garden row? Who will hear my worry voice raised toward the sky? I will, your weeping willow tree. Who will wipe away my sweat? Who will give me shade after a hard days work? Who will cool my brow? I will, answered the willow weeping. Who will miss me in this world? Who will call out my name? Who will bow down their arms? Who will lift my spirit on high? I will friend, your weeping willow. I will grow strong in the sun, I will catch the breeze to give you. I will shade your head, protect you. I will remember all the days of your life, and My branches will carry your voice, Your tears, your love in the wind I will, your weeping willow.

When I say, “I am a Christian” I’m not begging of success. I’m admitting that I’ve failed. And cannot ever pay the debt.
When I say “I am a Christian” I don’t speak of this with pride. I’m confessing that I stumble, And I need someone to be my guide.
When I say “I am a Christian” I still feel the sting of pain. I have my share of heartaches, Which is why I seek his name.
When I say, “I am a Christian” ”I’m not trying to be strong. I’m professing that I’m weak, And pray for strength to carry on.
When I say “I am a Christian” I do not wish to judge, I have no authority, I only know I’m loved!

Guide To Making Campfires
July 2012
One of the most critical skills for all who venture into the outdoors is the ability to build a fire quickly. Fire allows you to cook food, boil water, provide heat and light; it is a companion that offers self-assurance and it can be your distress signal if needed. Here are some basic tips that will help you develop better outdoor fire-starting skills: Preparation: Whenever you build any fire, for warmth, overnight, or for cooking, get all the materials together in their proper place, before you strike your match. Stack the firewood by size about five feet from the fire pit. Splash water on the ground around, but not in or on, the fire pit. Clear a circle of 2 to 5 feet from around the fire pit of excess pine needles and leaves. Know where your matches are, they are one of your most valuable physical assets in the outdoors, and haste and poor preparation defeat the purpose of being able to efficiently start a fire. Location: For a midday cooking fire, pick a sheltered location, away from overhanging branches and on solid ground, and make a very small fire. For evening cooking and for overnight, plan for a larger fire or several small fires around you, this will help provide for greater warmth. But be careful in how you arrange multiple fires -- three fires in a triangular arrangement are a recognized ground to air signal of distress. Overnight fires: Pick your sleeping location first and then build your fire in relation to it for maximum warmth. Do not set your sleeping bag too close to the fire, and make sure your fire pit is a safe distance from overhanging trees, etc. Do not use wet or damp rocks to line your fire pit -- they can heat up and explode. Patience: Start any fire with the utmost patience. Plan it carefully and one match will do. Get out of the wind as much as you can before striking your match. Shield the fire area with your body or make a windshield with your jacket or other gear before lighting your match, or you can light a candle in a cup, then use the candle to light your fire. A good foundation: Lay a foundation of fine tinder, such as shavings from dried twigs or pine needles, or whittle with your knife from a dried branch. If possible, do not use leaves, they float into the air very easily. Perhaps the simplest and most effective approach is to use fire starter such as a solid fuel tablet. Build up: Above the fine tinder bed, crisscross a few larger dry twigs about the size of a pencil. Have increasingly larger pieces of wood at hand. A good method is to lay your tinder beside a short length of stick 3 to six inches in diameter, lean the larger twigs over the tinder and against the large stick. Now, when the tinder catches, the twigs will flame up quickly allowing you to add still larger pieces of wood and before you know it you'll have a good blaze. Fire starter: Use a waterproof match, or butane lighter to light it, and slowly add increasingly larger twigs, branches and pieces of wood, building the fire up gradually. Make sure your fire is completely out before leaving camp. Douse with water, scatter cinders and cover with dirt. You should feel confident about putting a finger in the fire pit and not being burned. Check it at least twice by pouring water and checking for "hisses". Practice good environmental habits, restore the ground around your camp to the condition you found it, and distribute the ash residue from your fire don't leave ashes in a pile. Other things you should know… Cooking fires: Look for flat dry rocks to surround the fire so you have containment and a place for your utensils. A small pit built with dry rocks laid out in a "V" or a "U" with the open end toward the breeze will allow draft in the open end to help keep the fire going. If winds are strong, reverse the open end of your pit. Wet conditions: In rain or snow, fire-making becomes more important, and also more difficult. Try making a tripod of sticks over your chosen fire area and draping your jacket over the tripod to shelter the fire base. Carefully light the tinder, add some twigs, and remove your jacket. If the ground is exceedingly wet, lay a base of large logs and sticks and start your fire on top of them.

Avoid arguments with the females about lifting the toilet seat by using the sink. 3. For high blood pressure sufferers ~ simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure on your veins. Remember to use a timer. 4. A mouse trap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button. 5. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives. Then you'll be afraid to cough. 6. You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape. 7. If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Contrary to Popular Belief
3919th Civil Engineering Sq - (SAC) RAF Fairford Air Base - Fairford, England 10 July 1960 - 4 February 1962
Chapter II
PETE SEMANICK
After about a year in Swindon I found a small village that was ideal for real country style living. Fortunately for me one of my friends was transferring back to the states and he recommended the village of Faringdon where he had resided. The village had hundreds of years of history including a famous battle where Lord Wellington and his army passed through. A cannon ball was still embedded in the wall of the large Church of England structure. My new off base home would be in a quaint apartment located over the stables adjacent to an estate called Faringdon House. This estate contained over 200 acres, a small lake and a huge main house that had been owned by the eccentric Lord Gerald Berners. Previous guests included socialites such as the Duchess of Winchester, members of the Kennedy family, members of the Churchill family, members of Cadbury family, Gertrude Stein and Igor Stravinsky. In 1942, the house had even served as a hospital for wounded American airmen and soldiers. I considered it a real privilege for me and my family to be able to live on the estate. Fire Prevention Weeks were always a huge success. One highlight during each week was the arrival of a group of boys and girls from a local English orphanage. They were given fire truck rides and they always enjoyed the big spread of American food. They also took pleasure interacting with the
American children who lived on base and participating in games with them at the local elementary school. Gradually our senior staff started to rotate back to the states. By this time I had been promoted to Master Sergeant and found myself again as a Fire Chief since I was the ranking fireman. After a few months I learned that another Master Sergeant would be reporting to duty from the states. When he arrived, the Fire Marshal called me down to his office and with reluctance told me that I had been outranked and he would have to reassign me to Deputy Fire Chief. I had two years remaining on my overseas assignment and I sure didn’t want to be bumped back to a lower position, so I called 7th Air Division Headquarters at High Wycombe and talked to Senior Master Sargeant Lack. He was my contact at headquarters and since I had accomplished so much at Fairford he agreed to help me get a new assignment. He spoke to his boss, Lt. Col Plunkett, and they agreed to assist me. It just so happened that the Fire Chief at High Wycombe was close to rotation and he agreed to rotate early so I could be reassigned to his job. In just a matter of a few short weeks my orders arrived assigning me to High Wycombe, I was certainly grateful for this new opportunity.

1. A drunk cannot sober up by drinking coffee or taking a cold shower. Giving coffee to a drunk simply creates a wide-awake drunk. Having a drunk take a shower creates a wet drunk. Unprocessed alcohol in the bloodstream creates inebriation, and nothing helps speed up the body's ability to flush the intoxicant from the system. 2. Camels do not carry water in their humps. Camels do not have a reservoir for liquids in their humps. The hump is a food reserve made primary of fat. By storing most of its body fat in the hump, the camel can lose heat freely from the rest of its body without having to perspire much, thereby conserving water. Camels do not start sweating until their body temperatures reach 115 degrees Fahrenheit. 3. Frankenstein was not a monster. In both the 1818 novel and the 1931 movie, Frankenstein is the name of Victor Frankenstein, a student of natural psychology, who creates the monster. In the novel, Frankenstein names his monster Adam. In the movie, the monster goes unnamed. 4. Big Ben is not the clock tower in London. Big Ben is the name of the largest bell in the clock tower of the House of Parliament in London. The thirteen-ton bell, installed in 1859, was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the commissioner of works, who was tall, stout, and nicknamed Big Ben. The official name of the clock tower is the Clock Tower. 5. Sound does not travel at the speed of sound. There is no such thing as the speed of sound. Sound travels at different speeds depending on the temperature and the medium it is passing through. Sound travels faster at higher altitudes and at higher temperatures. Sound travels about four times faster through water than through air and about fifteen times faster through steel.

The coupon page is a great new service which will benefit the business owner, the reader and many others through out Roane County. By having all the coupons grouped together on one page gives the reader one page to view all the great deals from our local businesses. This will allow them to cut out the whole page and take it with them rather than only having small cut up coupons that get lost or torn easily. The business owner will benefit by having there coupon noticed more often with better return, face it people love coupons. Placing your coupon on the coupons page rather than on your ad gives you more room for extra information and keeps people from cutting out your ad so others have a chance of seeing it also. I wanted to start this page as a way to give back to the advertisers that we cherish so much. The last thing we want is businesses paying for ads and not getting results. If you have a coupon in The Roane Reader I want to make sure they get used each and every month, ensuring that you are getting results from your support with us. I think this is a great way to get people to notice your business. Ok, so these are two great reasons to buy a spot on our coupons page but I have an even better reason to claim your space as well. Every dollar collected for your space on our coupons page will be donated to a local charity or cause. The Roane Reader will donate all the money to a different charity or cause each month. The coupons page will also be a great way to give back to the community as well. The Roane Reader feels very strongly about this great service and hope lots of businesses participate. Having your name on this page will show your support and if you don't have a special running that month you can simply sponsor a spot on the page to make a donation to the cause.

"Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face." Ronald Reagan
fu
In Luke chapter 7, we're told of a Pharisee named Simon who invited Jesus to dinner. After accepting, Jesus has two encounters at this dinner that remind me so much of Christians today! It was a pretty big deal to host such a person of influence. Pharisees had studied the scriptures their entire lives, and had all of the customs and rituals memorized. They knew there were very strict rules to follow for such an event. Jesus was the guest of honor that day. According to their cultural customs, the host would always follow a very intentional code of conduct in welcoming such a rabbi into their home. If a guest entered your house who was of equal social rank, you would kiss them on the cheek as a token of mutual respect. If your guest was of a higher social rank than you, you would humbly kiss them on their hand. These were typical greetings that a Pharisee would have been well trained to give. Washing your hands and feet before eating was also a strict Jewish custom. It was mandatory. If you truly wished to honor a guest in your home, you would personally wash their feet for them as a sign of humility and respect. A typical, lesser honor would be to make your servant serve your guest by washing their feet. If you wanted to show them the least amount of courtesy, you would give your guest a bucket and a towel so they could wash their own feet. With very distinguished guests, you would also offer them an inexpensive oil for their head to act as a perfume. Simon had purposely not fulfilled ANY of these respects. He had literally ignored the Son of God! It was like Simon invited Jesus into his house, and wouldn't even shake His hand! Simon knew the rules, and Jesus was insulted. However, a prostitute had apparently witnessed Jesus preaching, healing the sick, and offering the forgiveness of sins. After hearing that Jesus would be dining with Simon, she recklessly crashed the party! She came to Jesus and poured her heart out in gratitude for the forgiveness and healing she received from this rabbi! Overwhelmed with love and adoration, she began crying over the Messiah. She carelessly watched as those tears landed on the dirty feet of her Savior, and humbly knelt to clean His feet with her hair! Knowing the burden of her sin, and feeling it's weight lifted from her shoulders, she began kissing the very feet of her Forgiver. In her profession, her perfume would have been her livelihood. Knowing she couldn't return to her past life and mistakes, she eagerly poured the entire contents upon the feet of her Redeemer. Religiously, Simon had spent his life memorizing more than 300 prophecies about his guest. He knew all ABOUT Jesus, but Simon never truly KNEW Jesus. However, the desperate outcast, and despised sinner wouldn't let any social implications of her actions keep her from reaching her Bridegroom. One had rituals, another had faith. One had knowledge, another had transforming experience. One had religion, another had relationship. One had bondage, another received freedom. Freedom may always be within grasp, but our hands are far too often so tightly clutching our pride that we have no grip to spare. Let it go! We treasure our temporary earthly reputation as far more important than our relationship with the eternal Creator of the Universe. If we remain ritualistically religious and never completely surrender to His will, we'll never know the freedom the sinner received. Instead we'll live our lives with the dissatisfaction of remaining in the bondage of our sins, and the frustration of a soul never satisfied. We live in the Land of the Free, yet so very rarely exercise the extent of that freedom. As we celebrate our nation's independence, consider your own options and bondages. What a perfect time to reclaim your spiritual independence! Seek the Savior. Treasure Christ. Find Freedom. h
