SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY By O.I. Seenya • A woman and a cashier crying when a complete stranger pays for the woman's items at a local grocery store. • Man hands $25 gift card to woman at the Dinner Bell and tells her "Merry Christmas". The woman had never met this man before and was so overwhelmed with joy she wanted others to know there are still good people out there. • Clothes, food, toys and love being handed out to people during Christmas time by many churches, clubs and groups in Roane County, reaching out to help those in need, with no judging, and no questions asked. The true meaning of Christmas shone through these people.

(According to TheDailyMeal.com:) Rockstar Energy Drink We've all had the urge to bump up the caffeine levels when the 2:00 p.m. slump hits or you need the extra energy, but an 8 oz. Rockstar Energy Drink will set you back 140 calories and a whopping 31 grams of sugar. You'll need all the energy you get just to work it off. Tropicana Fruit Fury Twister When you think Tropicana, you may not think of high calorie content and lots of sugar, but the Fruit Fury Twister actually has 140 calories. Even worse, a serving has 24 grams of sugar. And all three of the bottle sizes (10, 20, and 96) are packing 2.5 servings so you'll get more than double the diet crash. Starbucks Eggnog Latte When the holiday revs up, you may want to grab an eggnog latte to get in the spirit of the season. However, keep in mind that a short 8 oz. eggnog latte has 230 calories and 24 grams of sugar. Jamba Juice Mega Mango Smoothie Smoothies are those hidden calorie-killers no one ever remembers. They are chock full of fruit so how can they be bad? An eight-ounce serving of the Mega Mango smoothie from Jamba Juice has 115 calories and 26 grams of sugar. Most serving sizes are 16 ounces, so you could be consuming 52 grams of sugar in one drink. Chick-Fil-A Lemonade Chick-Fil-A is known for sweeter-than-sweet tea, so you may choose lemonade as a "healthier" option. But, a 9 oz. serving of lemonade has 170 calories and 43 grams of sugar. That's just for a size small.

Precious Memories By: Kay Christopher

Those cold, snowy days

Growing up in Emory Gap was a delight. Especially, when we’d wake up to a multi-inch snow. I’ve heard several people say that it doesn’t snow now like it did when we were kids, and it sure seems that way. Seems like we would get a snow at least once a week in the Winter. All us kids would dress out in three layers of clothes, two to three pair of socks, either gloves, or socks on our hands covered with a plastic bag, rubber boots, and a thick, play coat. Back then, you changed clothes when you got home from school or church and put on your play clothes. I guess with six kids, we did make a mess with all those clothes wet, and covered in snow. Most homes had to use wringer washers to wash clothes, and I didn’t know anyone who had a clothes dryer back then, so that meant all the washed clothes had to be hung out on the line--even in the sub-zero temperatures. Mama’s rule was once you went out and came back in the house, you couldn’t go back out for the rest of that day. So, we would stay out for hours, as long as our bodies could physically stand it. I don’t know how we didn’t freeze to death (literally). At night, Mama would send my two brothers back outside with a huge pot to get snow for snow cream. She made the best in the world. She used real cream, and we’d eat every bite she made until we had what is now known as “brain freeze”. Big snows and a good childhood go together, and we seemed to have plenty of both.

Income Tax Funnies

Some people think the government owes them a living. The rest of us would gladly settle for a small tax refund. Our government really takes care of us. They even give us free income tax forms. President Herbert Hoover was the first President to give his salary back to the government. Now the government would like everybody to do it. Everybody works for the government, either on the payroll or the tax roll. A man's home is his castle. At least that's how he feels when he pays taxes on it. The honeymoon is over when the bride begins to feel like she was never anything but a tax deduction to him. Don't you long for the good old days when Uncle Sam lived within his income and without most of yours? Nothing makes a person more modest about their income than to fill out a tax form. The income tax forms have been simplified beyond all understanding. It's too bad for the middle income person. They earn too much to avoid paying taxes and make too little to afford paying them. It's strange how a person with no sense of humor can come up with such funny answers on his/her tax return. When making out your tax return, it's better to give than to deceive. I hate junk mail, and that includes the tax forms they send me. When it comes to income tax, most of us would be willing to pay as we go if we could only catch up on where we've been. An income tax return is like a girdle. If you put the wrong figure in it your are likely to get pinched. Income tax is Uncle Sam's version of "Truth or Consequences." After a man pays his income tax, he knows how a cow feels after she's been milked. The latest income-tax form has been greatly simplified. It consists of only three parts: (1) How much did you make last year? (2) How much have you got left? (3) Send amount listed in part 2. It is generally agreed that the income tax is the government's idea of instant poverty. An income-tax form is like a laundry list - either way you lose your shirt. About the time a man is cured of swearing, another income tax is due. When they consider candidates for the next Pulitzer Prize for the best definitive biography, many a man would be delighted to submit his last income-tax report. Loafing is the only way to beat the income tax. Nothing has done more to stimulate the writing of fiction than the itemized deduction section of the income-tax forms. The income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf. People who squawk about their income tax can be divided into two classes: men and women.

THE EMPTY CHAIR

A man's daughter had asked the local pastor to come and pray with her father. When the pastor arrived, he found the man lying in bed with his head propped up on two pillows and an empty chair beside his bed. The pastor assumed that the old fellow had been informed of his visit. "I guess you were expecting me," he said. "No, who are you?" "I'm the new associate at your local church," the pastor replied. "When I saw the empty chair, I figured you knew I was going to show up." "Oh yeah, the chair," said the bedridden man. "Would you mind closing the door?" Puzzled, the pastor shut the door. "I've never told anyone this, not even my daughter," said the man. "All of my life I have never known how to pray. At church I used to hear the pastor talk about prayer, but it always went over my head." "I abandoned any attempt at prayer," the old man continued, "until one day about four years ago my best friend said to me, 'Joe, prayer is just a simple matter of having a conversation with Jesus. Here's what I suggest. Sit down on a chair; place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith see Jesus on the chair. It's not spooky because he promised, 'I'll be with you always.' Then just speak to him and listen in the same way you're doing with me right now." "So, I tried it and I've liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours every day. I'm careful, though. If my daughter saw me talking to an empty chair, she'd either have a nervous breakdown or send me off to the funny farm." The pastor was deeply moved by the story and encouraged the old guy to continue on the journey. Then he prayed with him, and returned to the church. Two nights later the daughter called to tell the pastor that her daddy had died that afternoon. "Did he seem to die in peace?" he asked. "Yes, when I left the house around two o'clock, he called me over to his bedside, told me one of his corny jokes, and kissed me on the cheek. When I got back from the store an hour later, I found him dead. But there was something strange, in fact, beyond strange--kinda weird. Apparently, just before Daddy died, he leaned over and rested his head on a chair beside the bed."

The Plane Crash

Abe and Esther are flying for a two week vacation to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Suddenly, over the public address system, the Captain announces, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I am afraid I have some very bad news. Our engines have ceased functioning and we will attempt an emergency landing. I see an uncharted island below us and we should be able to land on the beach. However, the odds are that we may never be rescued and will have to live on the island for the rest of our lives!" Thanks to the skill of the flight crew, the plane lands safely on the island. Later Abe turns to his wife and asks, "Esther, did we pay our $5,000 PBS pledge check yet?" "No, sweetheart," she responds. Abe, still shaken from the crash landing, then asks, "Esther, did we pay our Discover card yet?" "I’m sorry. I forgot to send the check," she says. "Esther, did you remember to send checks for the Visa and MasterCard this month?" he asks. "Oh, forgive me, Abie," begged Esther. "I didn’t send that one, either." Abe grabs her and gives her the biggest kiss in 40 years. Esther pulls away and asks him, "What was that for?" Abe answers, "They’ll find us!"

The Splinter in Your Brother's Eye, Luke 6:39-45

When you see a splinter in your brother’s eye, look in the mirror. You are not perfect, either. You might have a whole log in your eye. You make mistakes, too. Talk with your brother. Together figure out how to make sure the wrong is not done again. Ask God to help you forgive. You will feel your whole body relax when you truly forgive. Kids say the cutest things

A little girl from Minneapolis came home from Sunday School with a frown on her face. "I'm not going back there anymore," she said with finality. "I don't like the Bible they keep teaching us." "Why not?" asked her astonished mother. "Because," said the little girl, "the Bible is always talking about St. Paul, and it never once mentions Minneapolis." A mother took her three-year-old daughter to church for the first time. The church lights were lowered, and then the choir came down the aisle, carrying lighted candles. All was quiet until the little one started singing in a loud voice, "Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you..."

A Note To God

A Sunday School teacher challenged her children to take some time on Sunday afternoon to write a letter to God. They were to bring their letter back the following Sunday. One little boy wrote, "Dear God, We had a good time at church today. Wish you could have been there."

The Splinter in Your Brother's Eye, Luke:39-45 Sometimes you see the splinter in your brother's eye, but you don't see the big chunk of wood in your own eye. In other words, you see what's wrong with someone else, but fail to see that there is anything wrong with yourself. Jesus wants us to leave the judging to him. It is difficult not to fuss and carry on about the faults of others, but Jesus asks you to forgive your brother and forgive yourself. Jesus died on the cross so that your sins and those of your brother could be forgiven. Great Tips for Saving Money

tax woes America is the land of opportunity. Anyone can become a taxpayer. It's hard to believe America was founded to avoid high taxation. There was a time when $200.00 was the down-payment on a car; now it's the sales tax. There is no tax on brains; the take would be too small. The tax collectors take up so much of your earnings to balance the budget that you just can't budget the balance. Capital Punishment: Congress comes up with a new tax. Drive carefully. Uncle Sam needs every taxpayer he can get. Children may be deductible, but they are still taxing. There is no child so bad that he/she can't be used as an income tax deduction. The path of civilization is paved with tax receipts. If Congress can pay farmers not to raise crops, why can't we pay Congress not to raise taxes? Congress thinks it's alot easier to trim the taxpayers than expenses. Congress does some strange things. it puts a high tax on liquor and then raises the other taxes that drive people to drink. The attitude of Congress toward hidden taxes is not to do away with them, but to hide them better. Year around April 15th Americans have a rendezvous with debt. One of the great blessings about living in a democracy is that we have complete control over how we pay our taxes . . . cash, check or money order. The rich and the poor are alike. They both complain about taxes. The wealth of experience is one possession that hasn't been taxed . . . .yet. This country is as free today as it ever was. . . unless, of course, you happen to be a taxpayer. Golf is a lot like taxes. You drive hard to get to the green and then wind up in the hole.

Are you trying to save money? If so, it can be a frustrating exercise. Regardless of how many coupons you use at the grocery store, you can feel like you're not making significant progress. Many people try to trim expenses by focusing on small costs. They'll skip the $2 fountain Coke when they buy fast food. They'll trim their own hair rather than getting a $12 cut at the barbershop. These are great moves. Small items definitely add up. But if you want to make a fast, substantial impact on your savings rate, focus on the biggest-ticket items. Such expenses gobble up most of your take-home pay. Slashing those costs is the best way to significantly "move the needle" away from debt and toward savings. Housing, transportation and food represented $32,484 in annual expenses for the average U.S. household, according to 2012 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the most recently available. How can you trim your costs in these top three categories? Housing The average American household spent $16,887 on housing in 2012, according to the labor bureau, or BLS. This represented the largest expense for most families. If you rent and are nearing the end of your lease, look for a low-cost apartment. That doesn't necessarily mean moving farther away from your job, because then your transportation costs increase. Instead, look for a smaller apartment or one with fewer amenities. For example, skip apartments that charge higher rents to help pay for on-site swimming pools or gym facilities. Then, use the money you save through a lower rental payment to build retirement savings. If you own a home, try to refinance your home at today's lower interest rates. In addition, make extra payments toward your mortgage to pay down the balance faster. Opt for a home insurance plan with a higher deductible, which will give you lower premiums. And consider renting out a spare bedroom for extra cash. Transportation Transportation represented the second-largest expense, at $8,998 for the average U.S. household. If possible, live close to your workplace so you can minimize the length of your commute. This will help you save on gasoline, oil changes, and wear and tear on your car. Also, try to live in a pedestrian-friendly area where you can walk to the nearest parks, playgrounds and grocery stores. That will cut your need to hop in the car for errands. Food Food registered as the third-largest household expense, at $6,599, according to the BLS. If you have a yard, grow some of your own vegetables, such as peppers, tomatoes and broccoli. If you live in an apartment without a yard, grow herbs on your windowsill, such as basil, mint or oregano. Try to avoid packaged or processed foods, which are less healthy and more expensive than making meals from scratch. Also, reduce your intake of soda. Instead, drink tap water to quench your thirst. It's cheaper and better for you.

Happy New Year!

Remove Clutter in Your Home

Get rid of the clutter and organize your bathroom space to work for you with this simple How-To. After spending a little time, your bathroom will feel squeaky-clean and luxuriously orderly. 1. Find 2 good-sized boxes and bring them into the bathroom. Collect all the items on the bathroom counter, in drawers and cupboards, and put them into the boxes. All means everything. Don't leave a single thing out, including soap, toothbrushes, and deodorant. 2. If you can sort the things in the boxes, do so. Mark one box Must Have and the other Optional. 3. Clean off every surface, including the counters, cupboards, shelves, drawers and everything you've decided you need to keep. Wipe everything dry with a towel. 4. Start to replace items, beginning with the medicine cabinet. Put back only the things that you can not live without or use frequently. This prime location should have only essential items in it. 5. Place clean decorative item back onto the countertop. The counter is not a storage place. It's for items you use daily or are part of the decor. 6. Set conveniently-sized drawer dividers into the drawers. Place often-used items by category. Have a section for hair items, makeup, shaving supplies, nail care items, etc. 7. Store bathroom cleaning supplies under the sink, placed neatly on one side of the cupboard. Place extra bath items neatly on the other side, keeping the two categories separated. Turntables made for kitchen items work well under the sink, as they make it easy to get at tall bottles. Simply turn the turntable around and you'll be able to grab the shampoo or conditioner. 8. If you have extra room in the cabinet under the sink, collect small items into plastic shoe boxes with lids and stack them to save space. Label the boxes. You'll be able to see what's in the boxes, but the items will stay orderly until you need them. 9. As you're going through things to put back in the cupboards, consider whether you really need them. Get rid of half-used products that you don't like and will never use. Toss those small sample bottles of products that you got free-with-purchase. Remember - less is more! 10. If there are things in either of the boxes you used for sorting, you probably don't need them. If they don't fall into the must-have category, you should get rid of them. 11. If there are any things that you don't need now but can't part with, store them somewhere else. Get them out of the bathroom and out of sight. 12. If you've followed the first 11 steps, you can now enjoy your neat, orderly, and organized "new" bathroom. Congratulations to you! Want to do something right now but don't want to undertake a huge decorating project? Take a look at these simple decorating ideas that can be applied to almost any room in the house. • Remove three things from your room. Sometimes editing is the most important part of decorating. You'll be amazed how much lighter the room feels. • Reorganize and style your bookshelves. It's free and will give your room a fresh new look. • Have a piece of glass cut for a table top (a console table or coffee table is a good choice). It adds a layer of elegance and makes it look more finished. If you really want to have fun, or if you want to cover an ugly tabletop, lay a piece of pretty wallpaper under the glass. • Take one of the accent colors from your room and paint the ceiling in the same color. • Spray paint your old wooden kitchen or dining room chairs. It's cheaper than buying new and can look fantastic. If you so desire, cover the seats in a new fabric as well. • Hang a flat weave rug on the wall. Ok, it's a little more expensive than a can of paint, but it'll look cozy and add a great graphic burst. • Change all your cabinetry hardware. • If you've got a pair of traditional lamps switch them out for something more modern and architectural.

Penny Pinchers • Shine linoleum floors. Drops of paraffin in water. • Remove water stains and soap scum on your glass shower door. Try some white vinegar. Mix the vinegar with some water. Spray the solution on the door and then rinse it off. • Shine jewelry. Rub gold jewelry with ball of soft bread, silver jewelry with lemon and rinse. • Dripping Faucet. If you cannot stop the sound of a dripping faucet, place a sponge underneath the faucet to stop the noise. You can also tie a string from the top of the faucet to the bottom of the sink, to allow the water drips to hit the bottom without sound. • Keep batteries fresh. Refrigerate them in a sealed plastic bag. • Unmist glass of watch. Turn it over and wear glass next to skin. • Place a few briquettes of charcoal under the seat of your car to absorb odors and keep it smelling fresh. Make sure to use the type without the starting fluid on them or your car will smell of fuel. • Give yourself a moisturizing facial. Whipped cream helps moisten dry skin when applied as a face mask. Wait twenty minutes, then wash it off with warm water followed by cold water. • Polish leather shoes. Spray furniture polish on shoes and shine with a cloth. • It can really be a pain getting the paint out of paint trays! Put the tray inside a plastic bag and then pour in the paint. When the job is finished simply remove the plastic bag and throw it away! The tray is clean and ready for the next paint job! • Keep celery fresh for weeks. Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator. • Save wax from scented candles. You can put the wax in a jar in a warm place and it will continue to scent the air.

Great Uses For Packing Tape • Remove a splinter or bee sting. Place tape over splinter and gently peel off. • Hold wires in place while soldering. • Clean a metal file. Put a piece of tape over the length of the file, press firmly, then peel off. • Provide first aid in an emergency. Bandage wounds with torn sheets and packing tape, or make a splint with two-by-fours and tape. • Kill ants. Use a strip of tape to pick up advancing line of ants. • Tag the pull cord that opens the drapes. Wrap ½ inch piece at eye level around the right cord. • Remove fuzz, lint, and hair from clothing or furniture. Wrap a strip of packing tape around your hand, adhesive side out, and pat. • Remove a broken windowpane. Wearing gloves, criss-cross tape on both sides of the glass and tap the inside edges with a hammer until the pane breaks free. • Organize cables and extension cords.

Here’s a fun cork project you can do with just a few corks. One cork makes 3–4 thumbtacks, so if you’ve got 4 corks, you’ll have at least 12 unique tacks once you’re done. •Corks (real, not synthetic) •A sharp knife •Glue gun (or other strong adhesive) •Flat headed thumbtacks 1.Heat the glue gun. 2.Using the sharp knife, cut the corks into small circles width-wise. A quarter of an inch to half of an inch is a good size, but no need to get too technical. Whatever width looks right to you. 3.Place adhesive to the flat end of the thumbtack. 4.Attach the cork piece to the thumbtack where you’ve placed the adhesive. 5.Repeat for however many thumbtacks you’d like to make.

U.S. Banks Are Preparing for Something They’ve Never Done Before – And You’ll Wish You’re Out of the Bank When They Do It!

If the devaluation of the dollar by the Federal Reserve and volatile financial markets weren’t big enough reasons to get out of the market, here’s another one: Bank “bail-ins” – or confiscation of depositor’s accounts. This means that failing commercial banks could freeze or take a portion of a customer’s deposits in case they get into financial trouble. G-20 governments want to avoid another expensive (and politically unpopular) bailout, like the US government did for insurance company AIG. Many nations are already running deficits and would have to print more virtual money to fund future bailouts. This would further devalue their currencies and make any future financial crisis even worse. This means that bank deposits in the form of checking and savings accounts in G-20 nations aren’t as secure as previously thought. Bank deposits are now considered Bob Tonachio part of a commercial bank’s capital structure, and subject to a decline in value. FDIC insurance is supposed to cover any losses from bank failures in the US. However, FDIC only reported to have $25 billion on hand to satisfy future claims – with trillions of dollars on deposit in US financial institutions. Last October, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osbourne, ran a joint exercise on how they would prop up a large bank in trouble with operations in the US and UK. Back in August, Stanley Fischer, Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve, gave a speech in Stockholm, Sweden and said that US officials were “preparing proposals for bank bail-ins for ‘systemically important banks.'” If a bank bail-in happened, a depositor’s account could be frozen and tied up in legal proceedings for months or years. Or a customer could see a lower value in their account because the bank needed that money to satisfy creditors. The MF Global scandal in 2011 and the Cyprus bank bail-ins of 2013 are two prime examples of what can go wrong with a financial institution. The strong possibility of bank bail-ins are another reason why it’s wise to own physical gold and silver in your possession Fed Vice Chair Fischer On U.S. Bail-in "Proposals" Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer delivered his first speech on the U.S. and global economy in Stockholm, Sweden. Fischer headed Israel’s central bank from 2005 through 2013 and is now number two at the Federal Reserve in the U.S. after Janet Yellen In a speech entitled, The Great Recession: Moving Ahead, given at an event sponsored by the Swedish Ministry of Finance, Fischer said that the economic recovery has been and remains “disappointing.” “The recession that began in the United States in December 2007 ended in June 2009. But the Great Recession is a near-worldwide phenomenon, with the consequences of which many advanced economies--among them Sweden--continue to struggle. Its depth and breadth appear to have changed the economic environment in many ways and to have left the road ahead unclear.” Speaking about the steps that have been taken internationally in order to “strengthen the financial system” and to reduce the “probability of future financial crisis,” Fischer said that the U.S. was preparing proposals for bank bail-ins for “systemically important banks.” As part of this approach, the United States is preparing a proposal to require systemically important banks to issue bail-in able long-term debt that will enable insolvent banks to recapitalize themselves in resolution without calling on government funding--this cushion is known as a "gone concern" buffer.” Fischer’s comments that the U.S. is “preparing a proposal” for bail-ins is at odds with Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and Bank of England officials who have said that bail-in legislation could be used today. The U.S. already has in place plans for bail-ins in the event of banks failing. Indeed, the U.S. has conducted simulation exercises with the U.K. in 2013 and again this year. On October 12 2013, Art Murton, the FDIC official in charge of planning for resolutions, and the Bank of England’s Deputy Governor Paul Tucker, both confirmed that the U.S. system is ready to handle a big-bank collapse. The Bank of England’s Tucker, who has worked with U.S. regulators on the cross-border hurdles to taking down an international bank said that “U.S. authorities could do it today -- and I mean today.” Bob Tonachio is CEO of Robert James & Associates. Myths About Generic Drugs

The U.S. health care system—and, in turn, American consumers—stand to save billions on prescription drugs just by switching from brand names to their generic counterparts. In 2012, generic medications saved the U.S. $217 billion, and this figure is steadily increasing. Many patients believe generics to be ineffective or even unsafe, despite the fact that 84 percent of prescriptions in 2012 were for generic medicines. Here are some common myths surrounding generics, and the truths you can trust. Myth: The FDA allows the purity of generic drugs to vary greatly from the brand-name equivalent You may have heard that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows generic medications to be anywhere from 80-125 percent as pure or effective as their branded versions. The truth is that for any particular active ingredient, whether brand-name or generic, the purity and potency required by the FDA is the same. Each batch of medication varies a small amount, whether brand-name or generic. A recent study on cardiovascular medications—which account for 35 percent of all drugs sold—found that the difference in bloodstream absorption between generics and name brands is about 3.5 percent, an amount not expected to have an impact on health. Generic drugs must be identical in strength, dosage form and administration. They also must contain the same active ingredient, work the same way in the body and meet the same standards of strength, purity and quality as their brand-name counterparts. Simply put, the law states that drug companies cannot alter generics to an extent that would put your health at risk. Myth: Brand-name drugs cost more because they’re better Consumers often perceive brand-name goods to be of higher quality than non-brand-name products, so it seems to follow that this would be true for medications as well. However, it’s important to understand that a generic medication is not cheaply made, and that the cost difference isn’t due to shortcuts by the manufacturer. When a medication is first synthesized, it goes through a series of clinical trials, mandated by the FDA and overseen by third-party regulators. This can take a number of years and cost billions of dollars, all on the manufacturer’s dime. Further, if the drug fails any one of the trials’ goals, it will not be approved and the company’s money is lost. For this reason, the owner of the drug’s patent is granted exclusivity to sell the approved product for three to seven years, depending on the compound. This helps the manufacturer to recoup the costs of clinical trials and marketing of the original drug under a brand name. After that period is up, other companies can manufacture the same compound and sell it as a generic. This is often done in the same factory and by the same company making the brand-name version. Myth: There’s no way to know what’s in generics because they aren’t tested The only differences allowed between a medication and its generic alternative are inactive ingredients and appearance—period. Some people may not tolerate certain inactive ingredients such as binding agents and preservatives, so if you are one of these individuals, you should look into the ingredients whether dealing with a brand name or a generic. Due to trademark laws, generics are not allowed to look exactly the same as the original medication, so their appearance will be different. They do not take longer to work in the body, and they are just as safe to use. Although minor and rare side effects from inactive ingredients may occur, this can also happen with brand-name drugs, so sticking to brand-name products will mostly be a burden on your wallet and will likely have no impact on your health. Fact: Generics are more likely to impact your wallet than your health For the average pharmaceutical, generics cost 80-85 percent less than name-brand versions. However, getting your physician to prescribe them may take some action on your part. Almost 50 percent of doctors report negative perceptions of generics, but 75 percent report getting their information mainly from pharmaceutical sales representatives rather than from unbiased sources. You should check with your doctor to see whether a generic alternative is available, and then contact your insurance company to see what is covered. A survey of physicians by the American Medical Association found that 37 percent sometimes or often prescribe a brand-name medication when an equivalent generic is available because the patient asked for it. This suggests that a large amount of people could be paying more just because they don’t know there is another option. When talking with your doctor, don’t be afraid to speak up and ask whether a generic option is available. You’ll probably only feel the difference in your bank account.

Exchanging Christmas Gifts An impatient woman, after returning Christmas gifts, was waiting in the return line at a shopping center. Her arms were laden with a mop and broom and other cleaning supplies. By her actions and nasty tone, it was obvious she was unhappy about the speed of service. When the cashier called for a price check on a box of soap, the woman remarked indignantly, "Well, I'll be lucky to get out of here and home before bedtime!" "Don't worry, ma'am," replied the clerk. "With that wind kicking up out there and that brand new broom you have there, you'll be home in no time.

The discharged patient

Hospital regulations require a wheelchair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman--already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet--who insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital. After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him. "I don't know," he said. "She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown."

Only in Tennessee Three groups of Native Americans lived in the Tennessee region. Cherokee claimed Middle Tennessee for hunting, Chickasaw lived in West Tennessee, and Creek lived in the southeastern region. “The Volunteer State” nickname originated during the War of 1812, in which the volunteer soldiers from Tennessee serving under Gen. Andrew Jackson displayed marked valor in the Battle of New Orleans. In 1835 an Indian Treaty was signed which resulted in the "Trail of Tears." Cherokee Indians were marched a thousand miles to reservations in Oklahoma. About 4000 Cherokee died as a result of the removal. On a clear day seven states are visible from Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga. The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville is the longest continuously running live radio program in the world. It has broadcast since 1925. Bluegrass music originated in Bristol, in northeastern Tennessee. The largest earthquake in American history, the New Madrid Earthquake, occurred in the winter of 1811-12 in Tennessee. Reelfoot Lake was formed during this earthquake. Andrew Johnson held every elective office at the local, state, and federal level, including President of the United States. He was elected alderman, mayor, state representative, and state senator from Greeneville. He served as governor and military governor of Tennessee and United States congressman, senator, and vice president, becoming President of the United States following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. There are more horses per capita in Shelby County than any other county in the United States. Bakersville’s Hattie Caraway became the first woman U.S. Senator. Tennessee has more than 3,800 documented caves. The Cherokee silversmith, Sequoyah, was the only known man in the history of the world to single-handedly develop an alphabet. His syllabus for the Cherokee Nation resulted in the first written language for a Native American people. The Ocoee River in southeastern Tennessee is rated among the top white water recreational rivers in the nation and was the site for the Olympic white water canoe/kayak competition in the 1996 Olympics. The world's largest artificial skiing surface is located at the Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort in Gatlinburg. There 5-acre artificial ski surface permits skiing in any type of weather. Coca-Cola was first bottled in 1899 at a plant in Chattanooga.

The Lord will be near in the New Year

The Roane Reader proudly presents THE WRITER'S PAGE

The Second Coming of Christ

by: Judy M. Reid The Lord will be near in the New Year This is His promise, so be of good cheer! Face it with faith, not with fear, For every day He will be near Near, to comfort and console. Near, to soothe a hurting soul. Near, to lead us to our heavenly goal. Near, when trials have taken their toll. Near, to give us what is best. Near, to assure us we are blessed Near, to bring our weary hearts rest. Near, to strengthen us for every test. Near, to restore us when we stray. Near, to forgive us when we pray. Near, to help us start a new day. Near, near, come what may.

I Thessalonians 4:13-18

by: Katie Bailey Randolph At the sound of the trumpet and the archangel's voice, our Lord will descend, what a day to rejoice! "Come on home children, your work is all done; the battle is over, the victory is won". The graves will be opened, the saints will arise, together we'll meet Him with joyful cries. Then, we'll stand before Him to face our last test; Is it wood, hay and stubble, or gold at it's best? All our works by fire will be tried. Only those that give glory to Christ shall abide. On earth, great tribulation, such as never has been, the minds of many misled by that "man of sin". Then, we'll return with our Savior, white horses we'll ride, arrayed in fine linen and Christ as our guide. He'll smite with the sword and rule with the rod, and tread the wine press of wrath of Almighty God. We'll be with our Savior in that thousand year reign, singing out praises to the Lamb that was slain Then, the beast and false prophet, and finally, the Devil, will be cast into hell and tormented forever! Then, the great white throne judgment for the unbelieving dead, judged for the wicked, sinful lives they have led. They'll stand before God, each to bear his own strife, for their names are not found in the Lamb's book of life. And, all whose names are not written there will be cast into the lake of fire. Then, we shall see New Jerusalem come down; no more death, pain nor sorrow in Heaven is found. We'll remember no more old things passed away; Heaven will be an unending day. We'll live there forever, throughout eternity, singing praises to God, who had mercy on me!

15 Fascinating Facts From Famous Death Records

From the king who ate himself to death to the comedian whose audience didn’t know his death wasn’t a joke, many high-profile people have left this world in unusual ways. Even many perfectly ordinary endings are fascinating because of coincidence, timing, or plain old bad luck. Here are some interesting facts about the deaths of famous people, or just famous deaths, that made news or made history.

The jockey who died and then won the race. Jockey Frank Hayes died of a massive heart attack during a race at Belmont, New York, in 1923. His horse finished first despite this, making Hayes the only jockey to win a race posthumously. Novelist Sherwood Anderson was done in by the toothpick in a martini olive. Anderson’s literary career was at its height in the 1920s thanks to celebrated books like Winesburg, Ohio. Although, he is most remembered for his influence on the next generation of writers, including helping William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway their first works published. In 1941, he suffered from abdominal illness on a South American cruise and died in a Panamanian hospital. It wasn’t until the autopsy that the true cause of death was discovered: He had swallowed the toothpick that an olive was speared on, which damaged his internal organs and gave him the infection that killed him.

Jane Austen died of Addison’s Disease three decades before it was discovered. Austen remains one of the most famous authors of the last 200 years. When she died in 1817, no one knew what strange disease had caused her to suffer for years. Now, many believe she succumbed to Addison’s disease, which, among other ills, causes darkening of the skin and extreme gastrointestinal irritation. The disease wasn’t even named until more than 30 years after her death. However, because she took such detailed notes of her symptoms, doctors in 1964 identified Addison’s as a likely cause of death according to Extraordinary Endings of Practically Everything The only known space deaths all happened on the same mission. A sellout crowd came to enjoy the program that was put together by Chris Corum and original track owner Bob Martin. Martin owned the track until he sold the track in 1977 to Bill, Jack and Jim Ogle who owned it for 17 years. Martin had some good races at the track and wishes it was still there. Some of the drivers that showed up were H.E. Vineyard, Bill Corum, Herman Goddard, L.D. Otinger, Georgia hot shot Snooks Defor, and Harriman’s John Stout. A plaque on the wall had all of the Hall of Fame inductees. Former workers were Martha Walker, Dwight Amos, Lowell Flynn, and John Griffin to name a few. Memories were abound and it was great to see everyone who came out.

In The Back Seat

Junior had just received his brand new drivers license. To celebrate, the whole family trooped out to the driveway and climbed into the car for his inaugural drive. Dad immediately headed to the back seat, directly behind the newly minted driver. "I'll bet you're back there to get a change of scenery after all those months of sitting in the front passenger seat teaching me how to drive," said the beaming boy to his dad. "Nope," came dad's reply, "I'm gonna sit here and kick the back of your seat as you drive, just like you've been doing to me for sixteen years."

Rockwood Memories

When I was Young

23 The Roane Reader

Grandpa’s Hands

Grandpa, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. He didn't move, just sat with his head down staring at his hands. When I sat down beside him he didn't acknowledge my presence and the Hello Readers, Two years ago around Thanksgiving, I wrote a column longer I sat, I wondered if he was OK. that has been a favorite of most of the readers. For the benefit of the ones who didn't get the "Rockwood Memories" at that time, or don't have a Finally, not really wanting to disturb him but wanting to check on him at the same time, I asked him if he was OK. copy of my book, I would like to print it again.

By: Ray Collet

I received an Email from Sam Doughty (Class of 1962) a few days ago. Sam is a faithful reader and I can count on him to send some memories of Rockwood to me. Here is what Sam had to say." I have a list of things about Rockwood that I remember, or would like to see or do again, but I would have to go back in a time warp. Some short things I really miss are as follows : I would love to see B. Boles shoot one more game of pool. I would like everyone else of our generation to have one more "Bert Brown" hamburger. I would love to sit on the "Bridge" in Rockwood with my OLE buddies one more time, to sit at the Peggy Ann truck stop all night one more time, to stop at the "Green Store" one more time from school, to play one more baseball game in the old Mill Field on Gateway now where the Gateway Market is, to see the "hot pot" dumped from the old furnace and light up the whole town. These are a few things I remember about Rockwood in the years past. Thanks a lot Sam. I sure enjoy hearing from everyone, it jogs my memory too about our days. As I write this column, it is a few days after Thanksgiving. I am still filled with leftover Thanksgiving turkey, ham, sweet potatoes, desserts and feeling good. This being Tennessee, we don't have a Currier and Ives snow scene outside the window, or no Jack Frost graffiti on the window pane. We will have to wait a while for that. But the nights are cold and crisp, and it is good to be inside and out of it. And since the dawn of time, in almost every culture, we've countered these dark short days of winter with some kind of celebration, whether it be Christmas or Hanukkah, almost all involving miraculous light. And so we defy the cold and the dark. We refuse to grant winter the victory, reminding her with our candles, glittering decorations and crackling fires, that light and life are not quenched and that her icy gloomy days are numbered. We gather our family close to us and serve the hearty, rich foods that warm us body and soul. This is a time to listen closely as wishes are made, one by one, and to secretly write them down and to slip and satisfy them before the traffic and the weather gets too bad. This is a time to whisper a prayer of thanks for health, for love, for food and shelter, or if you lack these things, to remember that life itself is a blessing and spring will come again, spring always comes again. It is a miracle the way that our blue planet, just a ball of rock, just warm and wet enough to support our lives. The animals know to migrate or burrow down snug in the earth; we light fires and put on warm coats and survive somehow. I thought of these things actually last year around Christmas time when I came back from Crossville and neared Rockwood from the top of the mountain. The stars sparkled above me and the city lights glittered beneath me. At the foot of this beautiful mountain with its Christmas Star shining so brightly, visible for miles around, a town was planted. Its' street lamps and decorated streetlights and houses were burning like campfire embers in the gloom, tiny against the darkness of the night but comforting nonetheless. What I was seeing was life carrying on. Life warm and joyous and precious; life winning against the blowing of the winter wind and the bite of the frost. It would be nice to see a white Christmas. I do remember a few in Rockwood. We had some great Christmas parades with Santa riding in the old Molyneaux Chevrolet a few times. I couldn't wait to see the new Columbia bicycles at the Western Auto Store and the Schwinn bikes at Mr. Hickey's place. And the "Dime" stores were loaded with toys. Remember the candy bins at the dime stores? You can't find candy like that anymore. The "apple and orange" matinées are probably a thing of the past too. And those wonderful animated Christmas figurines and scenery must have taken days to put in the window at Wright's Jewelers. We would usually walk to the Presbyterian Church across from the High School on Christmas Eve to see Santa and get our "treat". My dad and I, (after I got old enough) would lag behind and go back home for a while to make sure Santa had arrived for my younger brother and sisters. He never let us down either. My dad had a model train collection and was well known for it. Every year instead of a pony that I hoped for, I would get more model train accessories. I always wondered, when I was a child how come this always happens. Whatever your family's celebration-tradition this time of year, enjoy it, take pictures, tell stories, play music, get the necessary errands done early, gather close with the ones you love. This is the time for it. Gennell and I hope each and every one of you had a very Merry Christmas and have a very healthy and prosperous New Year.... My email address is RCOL110479@aol.com if anyone has a story to share or if anyone is interested in my book, ROCKWOOD MEMORIES Vol. 2..Sorry Vol. 1 has long been sold out. They are ten bucks and can be mailed to you if you include $2 for shipping. Until next month...Pleasant Memories...Ray...

He raised his head and looked at me and smiled. "Yes, I'm fine. Thank you for asking," he said in a clear strong voice. "I didn't mean to disturb you, Grandpa, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK," I explained to him. "Have you ever looked at your hands," he asked. "I mean really looked at your hands?" I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point he was making. Grandpa smiled and related this story: "Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled, and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son.* Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse and walked my daughter down the aisle. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day, when not much of anything else of me works real well, these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer. These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of my life. But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ." I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandpa's hands and led him home. When my hands are hurt or sore I think of Grandpa. I know he has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

TRUTHS ABOUT LIFE THAT LITTLE CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED

No matter how hard you try, you can't baptize cats. When your mom is mad at your dad, don't let her brush your hair. If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person. Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold a tomato. You can't trust dogs to watch your food. Don't sneeze when someone is cutting your hair. Puppies still have bad breath even after eating a tic tac. Never hold a dust buster and a cat at the same time. School lunches stick to the wall. You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk. Don't wear polka-dot underwear under white shorts. The best place to be when you are sad is in Grandma's lap.

In-law Jokes Two ladies ran into the court of King Solomon. “My daughter is to marry this man, but this lady claims that her daughter is already engaged to get married to him!” one of them yelled. The king stroked his beard and sat in deep thought. Finally the King spoke. “The man shall be cut in two and each of your daughters shall have him.” “Very well!” said the first lady. “No, don’t, I would rather let the other girl marry him than have him cut in two!” exclaimed the second lady. The King pronounced. “The first lady is the true mother-in-law.” “What?” objected the other. “She wanted him cut in two!” “Indeed.” said the king. “She is a mother-in-law!” A grandmother is at the toy store for hours trying to find the perfect gift for her grandson for his Birthday. She says to the cashier, “This is the perfect birthday gift, my grandson will love it and it will drive my Daughter-in-law crazy. She’ll hate it!” Father to daughter upon her announcing her engagement: “What does he do? Does he have any money?” Daughter: “You men are all alike. That’s the first thing he asked me about you!”

What is Hail?

Hail is a form of solid precipitation. It is distinct from sleet, though the two are often confused for one another. It consists of balls or irregular lumps of ice, each of which is called a hailstone. Sleet falls generally in cold weather while hail growth is greatly inhibited at cold temperatures. Unlike graupel, which is made of rime, and ice pellets, which are smaller and translucent, hailstones consist mostly of water ice and measure between 5 millimeters (0.2 in) and 15 centimeters (6 in) in diameter. The METAR reporting code for hail 5 mm (0.20 in) or greater is GR, while smaller hailstones and graupel are coded GS. Hail is possible within most thunderstorms as it is produced by cumulonimbi, and within 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) of the parent storm. Hail formation requires environments of strong, upward motion of air with the parent thunderstorm (similar to tornadoes) and lowered heights of the freezing level. In the mid-latitudes, hail forms near the interiors of continents, while in the tropics, it tends to be confined to high elevations.

Protecting Pets in the Cold If pets cannot come indoors, make sure they are protected by a dry, draft-free enclosure large enough to allow them to sit and lie down, but small enough to hold in the pet’s body heat. Raise the floor a few inches off the ground and cover it with cedar shavings or straw. Turn the enclosure away from the wind and cover the doorway with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic. Salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate a pet’s paws. Wipe their paws with a damp towel before your pet licks them and irritates their mouth. Antifreeze is a deadly poison. Wipe up spills and store antifreeze out of reach.

Snake Snickers

What is a snake's favorite subject? (Hiss-tory!) What do you get when you cross a snake and a pie? (A pie-thon!) Why are snakes hard to fool? (You can't pull their leg!) What snakes are found on cars? (Windshield vipers!) What's long, green and goes "hith"? (A snake with a lisp!) Why couldn't the snake talk? (It had a frog in his throat!) What do you call a snake with a great personality? (A snake charmer!)

The Dog Chase

Dan hated dogs, he hated them with a passion. One morning Dan was driving his car down a busy street when to his surprise he saw ahead of him a fellow running full force with 2 big dogs after him. “ I’ve just got to save this guy”, thought Dan, and with that he quickly sped up along side of him, rolled down his window, and screamed “hurry, hop in!” “Thanks!” said the fellow opening the door, “it’s always hard for me to get a ride when I have my two dogs with me!”

Pass on the OTC Pain Meds

Played a little too much soccer, weekend warrior? Spent too much time digging in the yard? Headache slowing you down? No problem! There’s always an effective over-the-counter pain-control medication that will ease your aches and get you back into the game. Seems reasonable to cut the dose down and give a pain pill to your cat or dog, doesn’t it? Actually, it's not. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are two of the most common pet poisons — which is why on any list of “do-not-give-your-pet” OTC medications, No. 1 is always pain medications. I hope the day comes, and soon, when every cat lover knows that acetaminophen can be deadly to cats. Alas, my emergency care colleagues tell me we’re far from that universal knowledge. Even less widely known: Acetaminophen is also toxic to dogs. The same is true for ibuprofen. Never give any over-the-counter pain medication to your pet. Even aspirin, once widely recommended by veterinarians for mild pain in dogs, is now on the “do not give” list after the discovery that even this “safe” product causes gastrointestinal ulcerations. Pain management is very important in pets, but don’t take matters into your own hands: Talk to your veterinarian about which prescription medication (or combinations of medications) will best ease your pet’s suffering safely. (Related: Pepto-Bismol contains bismuth salicylate, which is similar to aspirin and can cause similar problems in cats and dogs.) Tear supplements with antibiotics: Dogs with chronically dry eyes (commonly a problem in short-faced dogs with protruding eyes) need tear supplements to help with lubrication and keep them comfortable. But read the label: Some of these products contain neomycin, an antibacterial that should be administered under the advice of your veterinarian only.

Alcohol-based ear treatments: Alcohol burns and inflames the sensitive tissues of the ear canal while drying them out, which actually makes problem ears worse. And yet, a quick internet search will show you all kinds of “home remedy” sites encouraging its use. (Along with gentian violet, another Internet “cure” that’s not recommended by veterinarians.) If your pet has an ear infection, you need to take him to your veterinarian. After that is resolved, you can use a veterinary-recommended cleaner on a regular basis to help keep the ears clean and healthy. Hydrogen peroxide: While commonly, effectively and safely used to induce vomiting in dogs (and as part of a recipe to eliminate skunk smell), hydrogen peroxide should not be used on wounds. The fizz created when it interacts with tissue makes it seem like something good is happening, hydrogen peroxide, in fact, inflames the healthy skin around a wound, which increases healing time. And recent studies have shown that it’s not even an effective antibacterial. Steroid creams: We all know how miserable itching makes us, and when your dog is scratching, you’re almost as miserable as he is, just from watching and listening. But don’t just slap a steroid cream on the itchy spot; you may be making an infection worse, or you may just be wasting your money. Your veterinarian has many ways to help stop the itch, but the problem needs to be correctly diagnosed before any of them will work properly. While these are products you should never use on your pet, there are some over-the-counter medications that are safe and effective for cats and dogs. Just remember, you must ALWAYS check with your veterinarian before giving your pet medication.
