The Flying Jeanie
Growing up in Emory Gap was a very fun and adventurous time. Especially when Daddy made us a Flying Jeanie. Now, for those of you who don’t know what a Flying Jeanie is—I’ll explain. A flying Jeanie is something you made, you didn’t buy it. You found or cut a tree stump about two feet high. It had to be cut level. You then drilled a hole in the middle of the stump about six inches deep. Then you placed a small amount of grease in the hole. The hole must be small enough for an eight inch bolt to fit snugly in it. Then you found an old, but sturdy 2x6 inch plank. You drilled a hole through the plank in the direct center of it. You had to lay the plank on the stump and match up the holes, and then you placed the bolt into the two holes. A large nut held the plank securely to the stump. If the plank didn’t turn freely, then you had the nut on too tight, and you had to loosen it a little. Now, your Flying Jeanie was ready to enjoy. Of course, you let the older kids ride it first, in case you made a mistake creating it. Place a kid on each end of the plank. At this point, the kids were to hold on for dear life. Then, with your feet, you began spinning the plank around. Now this is the point where you really had to hang on for dear life. The object of the Flying Jeanie was to see which kid got thrown off first. That made the other one the winner. How I remember those hours I spent on our Flying Jeanie. And how fun it was to get your unsuspecting friends on it and teach them how to control their end of the plank, or they would get thrown through the air with the hard ground breaking their fall. All us kids got a lot of bruises and deep scratches from being thrown through the air from Daddy’s Flying Jeanie, but then, hey, it was fun! (Besides, we didn’t have many toys)!

After a four hour stay in the ER, and tremendous suffering for 4 days, her eyesight is back to normal. She said that was something that would NEVER happen again! She felt silly, but then, she remembered the other Roane Reader Co-Editor had done the same thing a few months earlier! • Overheard: Security officer: “Someone sent him some fruit for Christmas. He says he’s already been eating fruit, but no one gets a gut like that by eating fruit!â€? • A dog, backing up and barking at a chicken breast bone someone had laid down for him. • By an irate reader: Santa was at the Ole Thyme Mercantile in Kingston talking to children, sitting in a chair in front of their window inside. Santa has a wooden Sleigh sitting outside in front of the store on the sidewalk which you could walk around and nobody else was even open on the block. Santa was looking out the window and a city officer is motioning for him to come outside. The owners went outside and the officer told them they could not block a parking spot, which they had blocked the one in front of the store to keep people from turning so close to the walk where children were. Then he demanded Santa move his sleigh off the sidewalk. They told him how silly, and that its Santa’s and he has children inside, and you want him to stop and go out in the rain and move his sleigh NOW? Really? Stop Picking on Santa at a new small business trying to keep downtown alive and make an honest living. By the way, the officer was at the red light yelling across traffic instead of pulling over and addressing the matter. It was the same officer who asked the owners did they really want to prosecute a shop lifter caught at the store putting merchandise in her backpack because of the paperwork and having to go to court. The shoplifter also had other stolen merchandise from two other stores and was given a citation and let go as she drove away with an expired out of state license. Really just quit picking on Santa. • In food city parking lot, man said; “Just because you cant see the fly ash doesn’t mean that its not still in the the river.â€? • Unhappy citizens driving by the “Big Orange Barâ€? and seeing the tattered American flag. • Car sitting at the McDonalds in Kingston with its left turn signal on trying to turn left, when it plainly states “No left turnsâ€?. An officer waiting to turn left into McDonalds MOTIONS HIM ON AND THE CAR TURNS LEFT.

Top 7 Superheroes of all time
1. Superman Superman is comic book history. Without Superman, the first big comic book superhero, we might not have had Spider-Man, Batman, and the others. Due to the success of Superman, other comics companies pushed making superheroes and to that, Superman is owed a huge debt. Decades later, Superman is still going strong, with a new movie , multiple titles to choose from, and a hit TV show. 2. Spider-Man What Spider-Man lacked in ability, he made up in heart. The wall-crawler is one of the first of many true to life superheroes and because of this, Spider-Man has become loved and adored by fans the world over. Spider-Man is Marvel comic’s number one superhero, with legions of fans, blockbuster films, and many hot comics to read. 3. Batman There is something about the dark brooding sense of Batman that intrigues people. Or maybe its Batman’s alter-ego, millionaire Bruce Wayne, that people wish they had more in common with. Maybe the reason so many people identify with him is that Batman has no truly supernatural powers. Any one of us could be Batman Whatever the case, Batman has struck a chord with fans around the world. The Dark Knight is hugely popular with a multiple hit movies and many different comic titles to choose from. 4. Wolverine Next to Spider-Man, Wolverine is certainly one of Marvel comic’s most popular superheroes. He was pretty much the focus of the X-Men movies and helped make a star out of Hugh Jackman. Wolverine has quickly risen to the top of the X-Men as the fans most favorite character and considering how many characters there are to choose from, that’s no small task. He can be seen in his own comic as well as The X-Men comics and The New Avengers. 5. The Hulk Many people can relate to unleashing their rage. The Hulk has been a large part of Marvel’s rise to stardom and fans all over have enjoyed the intense action and emotion that The Hulk exudes. One reason fans resonate so well with The Hulk is that we all get angry and so many of us can relate to wanting to release the rage within us, something The Hulk is all to well known for. A hit movie and another on the way, video games, his own comic, cartoons, and toys make The Hulk truly a heavy hitter. 6. Wonder Woman The World’s most well-known female superhero has been through many different incarnations throughout history. She had a popular TV show, has her own comic book, and has a spot on the Justice League of America. Wonder Woman is a character that girls and women can look up to and be proud of. All told, Wonder Woman is one of comic books greats. 7. Green Lantern The Green Lantern is a huge cornerstone of the DC universe. Green Lantern has had a huge resurgence as of late. The relaunch of the series, the re-establishing of the Corps, and the return of Hal Jordan has made Green Lantern shoot up onto the list of top superheroes. Who could ask for more? With a movie, a spot on the Justice League, and multiple comics make Green Lantern a hot item.

Many New Year customs that we take for granted actually date from ancient times. This year, ring out the old and ring in the new with a New Year tradition—or two! Three misty mornings indicate rain. If the new moon is far north, it will be cold for two weeks ; but if it is far south, it will be warm.
• Old-fashioned Castile soap can also be dissolved in warm water to be used as shampoo. • After shampooing, rinse your hair with lemon juice to make it shine. • If regular shampooing with water is impossible for some reason, try mixing 1 tablespoon salt and 1/2 cup cornmeal in a shaker bottle. Sprinkle lightly onto hair, then brush thoroughly to get rid of dirt and oil. A combination of baby powder and cornstarch can also be used the same way. • To nourish and moisturize, pour some shampoo or conditioner into your palm and add a few drops of cedar wood, chamomile, clary sage, lavender, rosemary, thyme, or ylang-ylang. • To add thickness and body, use cedar wood or clary sage. • To reduce oiliness, try bergamot, cedar wood, lavender, lemon, pine, rosemary, or ylang-ylang. • To add luster, try sweet basil, Roman chamomile, or lavender. • To detangle hair, use chamomile, grapefruit, marigold, passionflower, or sweet clover, and to relieve dandruff, try cedar wood, clary sage, lemon, pine, rosemary, or tea tree. • For healthy skin, add rosemary oil to the bathwater. • Another age-old tradition to prevent wrinkles around the eyes is to apply a drop of castor oil around each eye before going to bed. Castor oil acts as a humectant, meaning that it attracts and retains moisture in the skin. This promotes healthier skin cell rejuvenation. Some plastic surgeons apply castor oil around an incision after surgery for this exact reason. • Save on those very expensive eye make-up removers with this recipe. Combine 1 tablespoon canola oil, 1 tablespoon castor oil, and 1 tablespoon light olive oil. • For use on your entire body, put some castor oil in a little spray bottle. To maximize absorption, spray it on your skin after showering and gently rub it in while your skin is still warm and your pores are open. Tales of the queen of Egypt, Cleopatra, tell of her beauty and her radiant skin. Her secret? Apparently she used to take frequent baths in fresh milk. Researchers now have found that the lactic acid in milk is the cause of the stunning skin. Alpha hydroxy acids help loosen dead skin and give healthy skin a deep cleansing. • As the tub fills, pour in two cups to one quart of fresh milk or butter milk. Fresh milk can be substituted with one cup of powdered milk. A few drops of lavender essential oil may increase the relaxing effects. • Soak in the tub for at least 20 minutes and gently massage your skin with a wash cloth or a loofah to rub off all the dead skin. • After taking your bath, drain the tub and take a quick shower to rinse off all the milk on your body.

A recent article in the Roane County News is what I consider very disrespectful of the family who’s loved one had just passed away. Many friends and family members sent and posted letter and statements regarding this article. Just in case they don’t print them, I thought we’d honor Kevin McClure by giving the family the privilege of voicing their opinion of a thoughtless, unsympathetic article. I was saddened this week to hear about Kevin McClure's passing. I want to offer my condolences to the family. I was blessed to know Kevin and many of his family members. Today I read the article in the Roane County News (and most know I'm not a fan) and for the most part was a good article but they couldn't just leave well enough alone. For his family, know that Kevin was a good person and most that he touched loved him. - Cheryl Wester Laxton I have seen some of RC News biased political digging and reporting before, but the reports I have seen from those who read the article about Kevin McClure shows a deeper immorality than I can imagine from a local newspaper. - Geri Harper Why are people so mean, just to make the ole mighty dollar, sell them papers and ruin those kids memories. How should you offer your condolences? Many people find it challenging to know what to say when someone they know or care about has suffered a loss. Offering words of encouragement or condolence doesn't come easy to everyone. Often people may feel as though they don't want to say the wrong thing, resulting in their saying nothing at all. However, the key to offering words of encouragement in this situation is to speak from the heart. Be genuine. Don't try to say what you think the person may want to hear or repeat what you've heard everyone else say. Think about how you feel for the person that has suffered the loss and then approach him or her and say what is in your heart. It may be something as simple as "I'm so sorry and I am here for you." or "You are going through a rough time right now, but I admire your strength." Refrain from bringing up your own experiences with the issue of loss. Remember, the idea is to encourage the other person, not dwell on what happened to you. Don't talk about the friend or family member you lost and how you dealt with that loss.

Disposing of a Bible
God won’t ask
God won't ask how many degrees you had. He will ask how many people you thanked for helping you get those degrees. God won't ask what your parents did to help you. He will ask what you did to help your parents. God won't ask what you did to help yourself. He will ask what you did to help others. God won't ask how many friends you had. There is no "biblical" way to dispose of an old/damaged Bible, as the Bible itself does not address this question. It is, therefore, a matter of personal conviction. It is important to understand that it is not the paper or ink that are "sacred". It is the Word of God that is holy, not the material it is printed on. It would seem, though, that throwing away a Bible would have to be the absolute last resort. Many old Bibles, if rebound, would be "as good as new" and could then continue to be used or given to someone else to use. Ultimately, if a Bible is genuinely damaged to the point of being unusable, it can be discarded. There is a story of a person who threw a Bible out with the trash. A garbage collector saw the Bible and removed it from the trash, began to read it, and placed his faith in Jesus Christ as Savior.

Billy Graham and the limousine Billy Graham was returning to Charlotte after a speaking engagement and when his plane arrived there was a limousine there to transport him to his home. As he prepared to get into the limo, he stopped and spoke to the driver. 'You know' he said, 'I am 87 years old and I have never driven a limousine. Would you mind if I drove it for a while?' The driver said, 'No problem. Have at it.' Billy gets into the driver's seat and they head off down the highway. A short distance away sat a rookie State Trooper operating his first speed trap. The long black limo went by him doing 70 in a 55 mph zone. The trooper pulled out and easily caught the limo then got out of his patrol car to begin the procedure. The young trooper walked up to the driver's door and when the glass was rolled down, he was surprised to see who was driving. He immediately excused himself and went back to his car and called his supervisor. 'I know we are supposed to enforce the law.... but I also know that important people are given certain courtesies. I need to know what I should do because I have stopped a very important person.' The supervisor asked, 'Is it the governor?' The young trooper said, 'No, he's more important than that.' The supervisor said, 'Oh, so it's the president.' The young trooper said, 'No, he's even more Important than that.' After a moment,the supervisor finally asked, 'Well then, who is it?' Government invasions in your home Citing the Health and Human Services website, a report posted that under Obamacare, government agents can engage in "home health visits" for those in certain “high-risk” categories. Those “high risk” categories include: • Families where mom is not yet 21; • Families where someone is a tobacco user; • Families where children have low student achievement, developmental delays, or disabilities, and • Families with individuals who are serving or formerly served in the armed forces, including such families that have members of the armed forces who have had multiple deployments outside the United States. According to HHS, the visits fall under what is called the "Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program" allegedly designed to “help parents and children,” and could impact millions of Americans. Constitutional attorney and author Kent Masterson Brown said that despite what HHS says, the program is not “voluntary." "The eligible entity receiving the grant for performing the home visits is to identify the individuals to be visited and intervene so as to meet the improvement benchmarks," he said. "A homeschooling family, for instance, may be subject to 'intervention' in 'school readiness' and 'social-emotional developmental indicators.' A farm family may be subject to 'intervention' in order to 'prevent child injuries.' The sky is the limit." Joshua Cook said that while the administration would claim the program only applies to those on Medicaid, the new law, by its own definition, has no such limitation. "Intervention," he added, quoting Brown, "may be with any family for any reason. It may also result in the child or children being required to go to certain schools or taking certain medications and vaccines and even having more limited – or no – interaction with parents. The federal government will now set the standards for raising children and will enforce them by home visits.” According to Cook, the program will require collection of a massive amount of private information including all sources of income and the amount gathered from each source. One of the areas of emphasis mentioned by HHS is the "development of comprehensive early childhood systems that span the prenatal-through-age-eight continuum." Last session, Cook added, South Carolina State Rep. Bill Chumley introduced a measure that would make the forced home visitations illegal in his state. The measure passed in the House but died in the Senate. In 2011, he noted, HHS said $224 million would be allocated to support these home visiting programs. Recycle/Reuse
Bananas are the magical fruit. They heal many common problems on the skin. By rubbing the peel on your skin, you can heal bruises and cuts and eliminate rashes, itching and warts. Basically if you have a common skin problem, it can be cured by this fruit.
Empty Coffee Cans - There are several ways to reuse these. You can take the coffee label off the side, and then stick your own label on. And now you have a great place to store monthly bills or important papers. Old Coffee Cups - They make wonderful plant holders, or fill them with candy and place the cup right onto of your desk. Plastic Ice cream Buckets - Use these for on the spot cleaning. Place one right under the kitchen sink with a clean rag placed inside. Now, when you need an immediate clean up, all you have to do is grab the spot cleaning bucket and add hot water and soap. Pickle Jars - These can be reused into cookie or herb jars. Empty Peanut Butter Jars - You can easily reuse to store nuts, bolts, nails, cotton balls, or several nail polish bottles. Old Picture Frames - If you have old pictures you would never hang on the walls in your house, simply cover the picture insert with a beautiful piece of material and glue cut out shapes in other material onto the insert or even sew on a button display to the fabric. Magazines - Can be used as packing material, or even to line animal cages. Newspapers - If you have a fireplace or wood stove, simply take a whole newspaper and tightly roll into a tube and then tape the edges. These little make shift newspaper logs burn quite slowly almost like piece of wood. Glass Jars - Can be reused for almost anything. You can use them to mix drinks, and use them to mix up pancake batter of all things. You place all the pancake ingredients into the jar, screw on the lid and then shake the jar until all the contents are all mixed up. Plastic TV Dinner Trays - Recycle into disposable dog dishes. And even throw a couple of these trays into a picnic basket. Instead of using paper plates, use the TV dinner trays to serve a meal out with nature. Pie Tins - You can use them as paint pans, or even to hold beads and other crafty materials.
Those packages of pre-sliced apples you can buy at store are great for a healthy snack on the go but the price can add up. Make your own by slicing apples, soak in cold water for 3-5 minutes, then soak in a lemon-lime carbonated soda (such as 7-up or sprite) for 3-5 minutes. Divide into snack size portions and store in Ziploc bags in the fridge. The lemon-lime soda will keep the apples from browning and make them last longer. Use the inside of a banana peel to give shoes a professional and natural shine that will last for quite some time. Instead of using a dryer sheet ball up one or a few sheets of tin foil and toss it in the dryer. It removes the static electricity from your clothes and one can last up to a year. Put candles in the freezer for at least 2 hours before using. Once you burn them, the wax will melt at a much slower pace, making them last much longer! Oil stains are very difficult to remove from pavement, but one method guaranteed to work is Coke. The highly acidic drink will eat away at the oil until clean. This may sound a little odd, but rub the inside of a banana peel on your teeth twice a day for two weeks and you will receive the same effect from a teeth-whitening kit. Plus, you’ll save yourself money and the hassle of using chemicals. You already know that dryer sheets remove lint in the dryer. Well, it can do the same thing out of the dryer, too. When you’re in a fix, use a dryer sheet. It works just as well as a lint brush, and if you like the scent, it’s an added bonus. Run a few small strips of wax paper through the can opener to clean out of the bits and pieces that have built up in the gears throughout the year. The wax will also rub off on the gears to protect for future use as well.

1: Pour vinegar and water into a microwave safe measuring cup or bowl. 2: Place measuring cup or bowl in the microwave and heat it until boiling; this will vary by microwave. It was so cold... Hitchhikers were holding up pictures of thumbs! Roosters were rushing into Kentucky Fried Chicken and begging to use the pressure cooker! When I dialed 911, a recorded message said to phone back in the spring! The optician was giving away free snow scrapers with every new pair of eyeglasses! Kids were using a new excuse to stay up late: "But Mom, my pajamas haven't thawed out yet!" A streaker froze in mid-streak! The town council just stuck a plaque on him and pretended he was a Greek statue until spring. Pickpockets were sticking their hands in strangers' pockets just to keep them warm! The squirrels in the park were throwing themselves at an electric fence! Starbucks was serving coffee on a stick! People with traffic tickets would plead guilty and beg for the electric chair! Levi Strauss started manufacturing electric jeans! The rats were bribing the alley cats for a snuggle. We had to chop up the piano for firewood - but we only got two chords. We had to carry around hammers and chisels so we could get out of our parkas! When we milked the cows, we got ice cream! When we milked the brown cows - we got chocolate ice cream! Words froze in the air. If you wanted to hear what someone said, you had to grab a handful of sentences and take them by the fire! Why are there no more dinosaurs? All of these and others might be factors (Colder climate caused them to die off, An asteroid hit the earth changing the climate , Volcanoes caused the sky to go dark and hurt food sources ). There are many theories as to why and how dinosaurs became extinct (a fancy word for died off). There are two main groups of scientific theories. One group believes that a major cause of the extinction was the effects of a huge asteroid hitting Earth about 65 Million Years ago. The effects from the asteroid would have caused an earth-wide climate change to a colder climate and put the planet into darkness. The other group of scientists believe that the climate change to the colder occurred without the need for a space rock hitting the Earth. These scientists also say there is evidence of increased volcanic activity as a reason for even more darkness and poor growing conditions for the plants many dinosaurs liked to eat. There other theories; but what they have in common is that whatever happened to cause a change the dinosaurs could not adapt to this new environment and died off. I do not know if we will ever really know why the dinosaurs died but scientists will keep researching for more information.
Why do ladybugs have spots? To warn away other animals and bugs from eating them. First, we need to understand that ladybugs (also called ladybirds in the UK) are not bugs but different types of beetles. Second, we need to be careful as not all ladybugs are red with black spots. There are many

different species of ladybugs and they come in all different colors and patterns. However, when most people think of the ladybug they see a small beetle with red or orange coloring and some number of black spots. The reason that entomologists (fancy word for a person who studies bugs) think that ladybugs have this bright red coloring and black spots is to scare away other animals and insects (called predators) from eating them by signaling that the ladybug will taste really bad and might even be poisonous. The "lady" for whom ladybugs (birds ) are named is the Virgin Mary because farmers in Europe during the Middle Ages thought the helpful little bugs were a gift from God. Ladybugs are much loved by farmers and gardeners because they like to eat other bugs that harm plants and crops.
Why does cutting onions make you cry? The onions release a gas that stings your eyes . When you cut into an onion, a chemical reaction ensues that releases a gas called propanethial-S-oxide into the air. Since your eyes are close to the onions (because you need to pay attention when using a sharp knife) the propanethial-S-oxide reacts with the moisture in your eyes to form an acid (sulphuric acid) that will cause your eyes to sting. The acid is not strong enough to cause your skin to burn or itch but is strong enough to cause your tear glands to try and get rid of the acid in the eye by producing tears. The tears will likely continue until all the acid is removed from your eye. So if you want to avoid "tearing" up when cutting an onion you can wear a pair of goggles.
Why is the ocean water salty? Rain and river water collect minerals as it flows into the ocean. When rain falls and the water runs into rivers and streams that lead eventually to large seas or oceans; along the way the water picks up small amounts of minerals or salts from the rocks and soil in the river. This slightly salty water flows into the oceans. The water in the oceans evaporates or freezes to form the polar icecaps, but the salt remains dissolved in the ocean. So the sea water gets saltier as time passes. The amount of salt or "salinity" of ocean water is about 3.5% of the water's weight. The saltiest ocean water is in the Red Sea and has a salinity of about 4%; while the polar regions are the least salty because the polar ice melts and a lot of rain falls to reduce the salinity of the cold polar waters. "The shortest day has passed, and whatever nastiness of weather we may look forward to in January and February, at least we notice that the days are getting longer. Minute by minute they lengthen out. It takes some weeks before we become aware of the change. It is imperceptible even as the growth of a child, as you watch it day by day, until the moment comes when with a start of delighted surprise we realize that we can stay out of doors in a twilight lasting for another quarter of a precious hour." - Vita Sackville-West

I started out on a road trip to find out what my life had in store for me. After a long time driving, I saw a sign that said, "Fun city, come on in". I stopped and the sign was true, after staying too long there, I started out on the road again. It wasn't long until I spied another sign that said "Good Entertainment" so I stopped and had a lot of fun! But all these things wasn't fulfilling the desire of my life. Excuses to skip your workout
You’re injured
If you’re injured, it’s important to take some time off or adjust your regular workouts if you want to get better. If you don’t give your injury proper time to heal and recover, you could put more strain on it and get sidelined for even a longer amount of time. Talk to your doctor about what activities you can do with your injury. Modifying exercises might make it possible for you to continue to work out, but it’s especially important to know which exercises to avoid. Keep in mind, most injuries will get better with proper care, so don’t get discouraged by this setback. On a positive note, an injury might help you discover some new ways to exercise. For instance, if your knee is bothering you, you might be able to try a low-impact workout like yoga or Pilates, and, hey, it’s always fun to try something new, right?
You’re fighting off an illness Are you sniffling, sneezing, and coughing? Not sure if you should exercise or not? Use the “neck rule” to decide. If your symptoms are all located above your neck (stuffy nose, scratchy throat, headache), you likely have a head cold and it’s fine to exercise. However, if you have a fever, congestion in your chest and lungs, or feel achy, it might be a sign of flu, bronchitis, or another more serious ailment, so you should rest up and certainly skip your workout to rest and recover. (Exercising with a fever will make you more vulnerable to dehydration, among other ill effects.) When you’re really not feeling well, it’s more than okay to spend a few days on the couch instead of at the gym, so your body can focus on fighting off illness. And, of course, the last thing you want to do is spread germs to others or pick up something else at the gym !
You just completed an endurance event Just ran a marathon? Competed in a two-day CrossFit competition? Finished a Tough Mudder in one piece? Congrats! What an accomplishment to be proud of! You might still be high on endorphins from your recent fitness achievement, but a rest day (or two) is likely much-needed to give your body time to recuperate. Some athletes feel better when they engage in active recovery, such as light walking, stretching, or foam rolling, which can help alleviate soreness, but it’s probably best to give your body some time off to help you recovery properly.
You haven’t slept well all week If you’re feeling just a little bit tired after a rough night of sleep, a workout might actually give you an energy boost, but if you haven’t slept well in days (or maybe you’re jet-lagged), it’s okay to choose sleep over hitting the gym– and this decision will benefit you in the long run. Research shows that lack of sleep can increase your appetite for high-calorie dense food, which can make it more difficult to maintain your weight. Even though heart-pumping cardio will burn calories, you’re better off sleeping in and saving your workout for when you’re feeling more rested. Plus, if you’re really exhausted, you’re not going to get a great workout anyway, and there’s always the possibility of injury if your mind and body aren’t in top shape. Similar to exercising with an injury, working out when a reoccurring injury is acting up is not good. Even a slight twinge could mean something more serious, so instead of exercising through pain and letting your old injury get worse, take a break before things get too serious. Once an old injury rears its nasty head, it often takes a considerable amount of time to heal, which, of course, will keep you from the exercising for an even longer amount of time. Get back to your regular exercise routine faster by nipping it in the bud with a rest day.

Did Obama lie or just “misspoke”? Since the passage of Obamacare in 2010, many of the President’s famous promises have been routinely broken. As he so ironically threatened in 2009, “If you misrepresent what’s in this plan, we will call you out.” To that end, here are 10 promises of Obamacare that have already been broken. 1. “If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period.” Reality: • Millions of Americans have lost and will lose their current coverage due to Obamacare. 4.7 million reported health insurance cancellations or changes of existing policies in 32 states. 2. “That means that no matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise to the American people: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period.” Reality: • Many Americans might not be able to keep their current doctor without paying extra. Many plans offered on Obamacare’s exchanges have very limited provider networks. 3. “In an Obama administration, we’ll lower premiums by up to $2,500 for a typical family per year.” Reality: • Premiums for people purchasing coverage in the individual market have significantly increased in a majority of states. Family premiums for those with employer-based coverage have increased by an average of $2,976 from 2009 to 2013. 4. “For the 85 and 90 percent of Americans who already have health insurance, this thing’s already happened. And their only impact is that their insurance is stronger, better and more secure than it was before. Full stop. That’s it. They don’t have to worry about anything else.” Reality: • Obamacare imposes new benefit mandates on those with employer-sponsored coverage—a majority of Americans. Coverage mandates are leading to higher premiums and companies changing their plans to adapt to them. 5. “Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase.” Reality: • Obamacare contains 18 separate tax hikes, fees, and penalties, many of which heavily impact the middle class. Among the taxes that will hit the middle class are the individual mandate tax, the medical device tax, and new penalties and limits on health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts.

More great uses for Hydrogen Peroxide Clean your cutting board and countertop. Let everything bubble for a few minutes; scrub and rinse clean. Remove baked-on crud from pots and pans. Combine it with enough baking soda to make a paste, then rub onto the dirty pan and let it sit for a while. Come back later with a scrubby sponge and some warm water, and the baked-on stains will lift right off. Clean the toilet bowl. Pour half a cup into the toilet bowl, let stand for 20 minutes, then scrub clean. Remove stains from clothing, curtains, and tablecloths. It can be used as a pre-treater for stains -- just soak the stain for a little while in 3% hydrogen peroxide before tossing into the laundry. You can also add a cup to a regular load of whites to boost brightness. It’s a green alternative to bleach, and works just as well. Brighten dingy floors. Combine half a cup of it with one gallon of hot water, then go to town on your flooring. Because it’s so mild, it’s safe for any floor type, and there’s no need to rinse. Clean kids’ toys and play areas. It's a safe cleaner to use around kids, or anyone with respiratory problems, because it’s not a lung irritant. Spray toys, toy boxes, doorknobs, and anything else your kids touch on a regular basis. Spray down the shower with hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria and viruses. Help out your plants. To ward off fungus, add a little to your spray bottle the next time you’re spritzing plants. Most of the dust in your home is actually dead skin!

Here are a few gifts that keep on giving – a quick roundup of health and science studies that made us smile in 2013. Dog dander is good for you: Allergy researchers working with mice found that exposure to dust from houses with dogs changes the community of microbes that live in the gut – and shape both immunity and protect the airways from viral and respiratory infections. ----So is living around pigs: British scientists report that allergies are up nearly 200 percent in rural Polish villages since that nation joined the European Union in 2003. New agriculture policies made it uneconomical for many to keep cows and pigs on their land. ----So cute, you want to hug them to death. Literally: Yale researchers studying reactions to pictures of cute animals found the phenomenon of cute aggression – so overwhelmed by cuteness that they became verbally aggressive and wanted to squeeze something. Similar reaction when test subjects got bubble wrap to pop while exposed to cuties as opposed to funny or neutral slide shows. ----Breathing better at night takes a slice off your handicap: Sleep researchers found that middle aged golfers with obstructive sleep apnea treated with continuous positive airway pressure therapy shaved an average of 11 points off their golf handicap. Oh, and they were also less sleepy during the day. ----The straight poop on Kopi Luwak: That’s Indonesian for civet coffee, world’s most expensive brew. The beans are “harvested” from the feces of a cat-sized critter known as the palm civet. Since it often sells for upwards of $600 a pound, fake beans are common worldwide. But a team of Japanese researchers found chemical signatures unique to the coffee beans that have been “civet-processed.” ----Fresh-picked isn’t enough, we need to know when: Researchers at Rice University found that post-harvest vegetables and fruits are still alive, or at least alive enough to react to light and follow a biological clock to change chemical signatures. On the plant, the changes help repel insects, but in the produce aisle, could affect taste and other properties, such as anti-cancer effects. ----None of us smell the same, either way: Scientists have long known that each human gives off a unique odor print from our bodies. But the world of the nose is even more complicated. There are about 400 genes that code for receptors in our noses, and nearly a million variations of those genes. Researchers at Duke reported new confirmation that no two people smell things the same way, with odor receptors at least 30 percent different between any two people. ----The Barry White factor: Canadian researchers report women listening to electronically-altered men’s voices were more attracted to those with deeper, more masculine voice, at least for a short –term relationship. But they also viewed deep-voiced men as more likely to cheat and less desirable as a marriage partner. ----Run, duck or cover? There’s an app for that: Computer engineers at Vanderbilt University debut a module and software that can turn a smart phone into a shooter location system, or at least a device that might tell from which direction the shots were fired. True pinpointing would still require having several different sensors deployed among a several people. ----Swimming in anti-anxiety drugs makes fish break bad: Swedish scientists found that perch exposed to the drug Oxazepam respond by becoming less shy and independent, breaking off from their normal schools to hunt for food independently. When they did find food, they ate it more quickly than normal. Drug levels tested were similar to that of leftover pharmaceuticals found downstream from many sewage treatment plants.

Rockwood Memories Mule Eggs
By: Ray Collet While in the Navy and stationed in Norfolk, Va. I made many trips on the weekends hitch-hiking to Rockwood. A couple of my Navy buddies from Wisconsin would come in with me since they were too far away from their home. One in particular, "Willie" continued to visit me after I was discharged, married and living in Rockwood. One particular time Willie came to visit and while we were chatting he said, "Ray, you are lucky living in such a beautiful little community, I am really thinking about moving to Rockwood since I will be discharged soon." Now Willie really loved the area of Grandview where my wife was from. Willie wanted me to ride to Grandview with him to see Gennell's folks so we headed out. When we got to Grandview, Willie said, " I think I might just buy me some land here and start farming. What do I need ? Gennell's dad, Jack, said "Willie, you will need a few things. " A breaking plow, stump puller, ground scratching plow, a plow to lay out the rows, small tools such as rakes, hoes, shovels, but most important you will need a big Georgia mule like the one in the field next door that belongs to my son-in-law, "Pete". Now Pete and Jack loved to play a practical joke. Willie said," Let's go see if I can buy me a mule, Jack stopped him and said," Wait a minute son, You can't just buy a mule like that, you have to raise them from an egg, be close to them and train them from hatching time." "I don't have any mule eggs left, there has really been a run on them lately and I sold all mine, but Pete might have one or two. I will call him for you." Now Jack phoned Pete and told him about Willie. Jack came back and told Willie, "Yep go on over to Pete's, he can fix you up. Willie got back in his truck and drove up the hill to Pete's and found him sitting on the back porch. He parked and blew his horn a couple of times. You don't just drive up in a person's back yard and get right out of your truck until they tell you to. Anyway Pete was sitting on the porch "whittlin" on a piece of wood and told us to get out and come on up and sit a spell. After a few "sips out of a jar", we started talking about the weather, politics and U-T football when Willie started getting down to business, asking about mule eggs. Pete told him he had one left for twenty dollars and it was out in the barn Now, when Jack phoned Pete earlier and told him what was happening, Pete was whitewashing a fence. He found a huge honey~dew melon and whitewashed it with several coats until it was pearly white. He took that melon to the barn and made a nest of some clean fresh straw, fluffed it all up and sat the melon right on that nest. He called for Willie to come and see the "mule egg." When we walked into the barn, the sun was shining really bright and a beam of sunshine was coming through a hole in the tin roof shining directly on that melon. WHAT A SIGHT. Willie ran over and said, "That is the one." I want it. I will love that egg, hatch it, and train that baby mule right. He handed over a twenty dollar bill to Pete, picked up the egg and we started out the door and toward the truck. Now there was a small rickety foot bridge over a ditch that we had to cross. Willie, was carrying that melon and singing, "Rock-a-bye, Rock-a-bye, How I love my little baby mule," when all at once a board gave way and he slipped. When he did the melon came out of his hands and went high into the air like a Peyton Manning pass and landed about six inches from a big swamp rabbit. That rabbit jumped up and took off a'running fast. Willie laid down crying, "I lost my baby mule." Then he stopped crying and said, " Aw heck, it is just as well. If I had caught him and hitched him to a plow, I couldn't have kept up with him." She jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating room. She said: 'How is my little boy? Is he going to be all right? When can I see him?' The surgeon said, 'I'm sorry. We did all we could, but your boy didn't make it.' Sally said, 'Why do little children get cancer? Doesn't God care any more? Where were you, God, when my son needed you?' The surgeon asked, 'Would you like some time alone with your son? One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes, before he's transported to the university..' Sally asked the nurse to stay with her while she said good bye to son. She ran her fingers lovingly through his thick red curly hair. 'Would you like a lock of his hair?' the nurse asked.. Sally nodded yes. The nurse cut a lock of the boy's hair, put it in a plastic bag and handed it to Sally. The mother said, 'It was Jimmy's idea to donate his body to the University for Study. He said it might help somebody else..... 'I said no at first, but Jimmy said, 'Mom, I won't be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some other little boy spend one more day with his Mom..' She went on, 'My Jimmy had a heart of gold. Always thinking of someone else. Always wanting to help others if he could.. Sally walked out of Children's Mercy Hospital for the last time, after spending most of the last six months there. She put the bag with Jimmy's belongings on the seat beside her in the car. The drive home was difficult. It was even harder to enter the empty house. She carried Jimmy's belongings, and the plastic bag with the lock of his hair to her son's room. She started placing the model cars and other personal things back in his room exactly where he had always kept them She lay down across his bed and, hugging his pillow, cried herself to sleep. It was around midnight when Sally awoke. Lying beside her on the bed was a folded letter. The letter said: 'Dear Mom, I know you're going to miss me; but don't think that I will ever forget you, or stop loving you, just 'cause I'm not around to say 'I Love You'. I will always love you, Mom, even more with each day.. Someday we will see each other again. Until then, if you want to adopt a little boy so you won't be so lonely, that's okay with me... He can have my room and old stuff to play with. But, if you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn't like the same things us boys do. You'll have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like, you know Don't be sad thinking about me.. This really is a neat place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything. The angels are so cool. I love to watch them fly. And, you know what? Jesus doesn't look like any of his pictures. Yet, when I saw Him, I knew it was Him. Jesus himself took me to see GOD! And guess what, Mom? I got to sit on God's knee and talk to Him, like I was somebody important. That's when I told Him that I wanted to write you a letter, to tell you good bye and everything. But I already knew that wasn't allowed. Well, you know what Mom? God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this letter I think Gabriel is the name of the angel who is going to drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you asked Him 'where was He when I needed him?' 'God said He was in the same place with me, as when His son Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as He always is with all His children. Oh, by the way, Mom, no one else can see what I've written except you... To everyone else this is just a blank piece of paper. Isn't that cool? I have to give God His pen back now He needs it to write some more names in the Book of Life. Tonight I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper. I'm sure the food will be great. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I don't hurt anymore the cancer is all gone.. I'm glad because I couldn't stand that pain anymore and God couldn't stand to see me hurt so much, either. That's when He sent The Angel of Mercy to come get me. Returning Christmas gifts? Read this It's here: the after-Christmas rush to return unwanted gifts. But a few big-name retailers have tightened up the rules this year, according to a survey released by ConsumerWorld.org. They found abbreviated return periods at three retail chains: • Best Buy shortened its holiday return period by nine days (now Jan. 15 instead of Jan. 24). The store had cut its regular return period in half (to 15 from 30 days) for most customers in March. Special orders are no longer refundable. • Sears shortened its regular return policy for major appliances and vacuums to 30 from 60 days, and excludes them from its extended holiday return period. • Toys R Us introduced an extended holiday return period for most items, until Jan. 25, but it shortened the return window (to 30 from 45 days) on certain electronics bought on or after Nov, 1. The return deadline for cameras, camcorders, digital audio players, video game hardware, DVD players or no-contract cellphones given as Christmas gifts is Jan. 9. Consumer World found that most retailers will let you return items bought online to physical stores. That could save you a return shipping charge. Remember, allowing returns is a customer service and not required by law unless the merchandise is defective. In some states, stores are allowed to replace a defective item rather than provide a refund. Some stores have a no-return policy. Others will provide only a store credit. Some notable policies: • Overstock.com will not take back any TV 37 inches or larger. • Amazon no longer accepts returns on jewelry without all required documentation. • Office Max will not give refunds on any product that it no longer stocks. Though restocking fees are declining, some stores still charge them—typically 15 percent—on electronic products when the box is opened and the factory seal has been broken. But there may be a restocking charge on other items. • Macy's has a 15 percent restocking fee for furniture and mattresses. • Amazon charges a 50 percent restocking fee on open DVDs and CDs, and 20 percent for late returns. To provide full credit, most stores require that all returned items, unless they're defective, be in new or like-new condition, with the original packaging and all accessories, and accompanied by all the paperwork. Surprising changes for extended warranties. Many extended warranties have improved, but they're still probably not a good deal, with one notable exception. Retailers want to accommodate legitimate returns but are battling an epidemic of return fraud that will cost them an estimated $8.76 billion, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). A significant portion—$3.4 billion—of the loss comes during the holiday season. Based on its 2013 Return Fraud Survey, the NRF estimates that nearly 6 percent of holiday returns this year will be fraudulent, up from 4.6 percent in 2012. The survey also found that throughout the year, 14 percent of returns made without a receipt are fraudulent. To combat this crime wave, most stores (74 percent) require picture ID if you want to return something without a receipt. Another 12 percent require ID even from customers who have a receipt. It's always been best to bring a receipt when you return or exchange something. That way you'll get the full price paid for it. Without a receipt, you may get the most recent sale price—if the store accepts the return at all.

A Mom’s Guide to Christmas When you’re a child, Christmas is the ultimate holiday: no school for the weeks surrounding it, lots of presents, good food, Christmas traditions, and the possibility of snow. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve watched Christmas shift from a magical, exciting holiday to a bunch of hard work and planning. I think all parents see Christmas differently than kids. The Christmas break is a lot shorter, presents are fewer, all that “good food” is painstakingly prepared by us, and we’re in charge of keeping all those Christmas traditions aliveincluding Santa Claus. We plan and follow a complicated sequence of actions every year to make sure our children believe in this man. From spending hundreds of dollars on gifts and then labeling them as being “From Santa” to actually making and leaving out cookies for him (and if you’re like me, carrots for the reindeer), we’re pulling out all the stops to keep the dream alive. For a parent, Christmas goes a little something like this: In the months, weeks, or days before Christmas, there is shopping. It can be a lot of shopping or a little shopping, but either way, you’re braving large crowds who are potentially angry and also in need of the very same toy you are, Jingle All the Way-style. For self defense, pepper spray is a good idea, although using it in Wal-Mart is probably not. Late Christmas Eve, you’ll be up putting together that desk, playhouse, or puppet theater. You’ll realize it’s missing an important screw or piece. You might have a mini-meltdown before you notice the piece was (hopefully) just hiding in the bottom of the box. Then, just when you think you’ve earned a good night’s sleep, you’ll be woken in the wee hours of Christmas morning by your child physically jumping on your head, yelling something about presents. And then it’s time to get up in a hurry to watch as they unwrap all their gifts (which are “From Santa,” not you), which is really sweet until it’s time to clean up the wrapping paper and packaging. Where is Santa for all the dirty work? While they run off to play with their large amount of new stuff from Santa, not you, you’ll make breakfast, which has to be impressive and fabulous. If it’s not, Christmas will be ruined for everyone. So you’ll whip up a hearty breakfast casserole or those Christmas tree pancakes you saw on Pinterest, try to figure out where all this new stuff is going to go, and have an oversized cup of coffee or two. Bonus points if you hum or sing Christmas carols while you do it. Don’t worry, though! When it’s all said and done (and after you’ve unwrapped that foot massager), you’ll feel great. Everyone will be happy, full, and obsessed with their brand new material possessions. You won’t be able to take full credit for it (“From Santa”), but you’ll know you pretty much orchestrated the whole thing and made Christmas a success. That feeling, knowing you helped make the day special for your family, is usually worth the trouble you’ll go through doing it. Merry Christmas! “Progressives want The Affordable Care Act to fail.” They want the Federal government to take over the $2 trillion health care industry. In doing so, President Obama will cement his progressive legacy. It’s ingenious really. He knew he couldn’t walk into the White House and say “We need socialized health care, like what Canada has…” He’d never get it that way. The Affordable Care Act provides him a stepping stone toward his ultimate goal. There is historical precedence. The Greeks ingeniously used a large wooden horse to gain entry to Troy’s impenetrable walls. They expected the Trojan’s would mistakenly accept the horse as a victory trophy from the gods. Unfortunately for the citizens of Troy, it was nothing of the sort. During the cover of night the elite force of warriors hiding inside snuck out and opened the gates of Troy. The city didn’t stand a chance as the Greek Army flooded in. Today, Obama and his allies have their own “Trojan Horse.” The Affordable Care Act. And instead of sacking a city, their objective is the health care industry. I’m the first to admit, I don’t know when this takeover will happen. It could take two, five and even ten years to get to that point. But, the more I research, the more I talk with experts in the field, the more I expect it will be on the earlier end of that timeframe. My best guess? 18 to 24 months. If I’m right, that means two years or so of living under The Affordable Care Act. During that time, you will notice healthcare services worsen as experienced doctors are forced, or choose to leave the industry. You’ll also find longer wait times for procedures and checkups. Forcing you into a “speed-dating” relationship with your doctor as they are required to see as many patients as possible. But luckily, you DO have choices. By acting today you can still control how you protect the health of your family. I’ll even share one solution I recently used in this presentation today, for free. For example, did you know you can claim access to a personal doctor for in some cases as little as $50/month. Better yet you don’t need to go to a State “exchange” to get it. And if you need surgery there are new businesses popping up all over the country that will tell you exactly what it will cost BEFORE you step foot in the door? This way you get the peace of mind knowing exactly what it will cost. Not to mention saving yourself the aggravation of arguing over coverage with your insurance company and hospital billing clerks. What’s unfortunate is most people have no idea these services exist. But I’d like to share them all with you today. Avery Trace If you’re like me, you’ve wondered what the words “Avery Trace” meant on some road signs in Roane County. I researched the information, and this explains it well. In 1787, in an effort to encourage settlers to move west into the new territory of Tennessee, hunter Peter Avery was commissioned by the mother state of North Carolina to cut a trail approximately 300 miles long through the wilderness. The trail was to stretch into the Cumberland Settlements from Clinch Mountain in East Tennessee (near Fort Southwest Point, point 20, in Kingston) to French Lick, which would later be called Nashville. The pioneering settlers came with North Carolina land grants, which they earned in service or purchased from veterans or speculators. They camped along the way and occasionally were fortunate to find families living in the area to give them shelter and food. Because a portion of Avery's Trace passed through Cherokee land, tribe members began demanding tolls for use of the road. After many travelers were killed along the route by the Cherokee, North Carolina legislature ordered militia details, commanded by General John Sevier, to provide armed escorts when large enough groups had gathered at the Clinch River to head west. Hwy 70W from Kingston up to Monterey follows the early route of historic Avery's Trace.

Courthouse Etiquette
Almost every day that I go to the courthouse I cringe at what I see and hear, and it appears that this gets worse in the summer time (the heat makes everyone crazy). I’m all for having a good time no matter where I go, but there are some etiquette ground rules that should be followed when you’re going to the courthouse to conduct legal business. The number one offense is by far wearing pajamas to court (this can also be expanded to other inappropriate clothing – booty shorts are not the best idea either). Don’t get me wrong, I love a nice pair of comfy pants, but anything I wear in public is not going to have monkeys or Hello Kitty© all over it. The other week I actually saw someone leaving the courthouse wearing what was definitely pjs, a bathrobe and slippers. Presumably you’re not at the courthouse because you feel like hanging out there and instead you are probably paying a fine, attending a hearing or trying to obtain records of some sort. Who is going to take you seriously when you are dressed like you just rolled out of bed? You don’t have to get all glammed up, but you should have enough respect for yourself to put on your big boy pants and dress in something other than pajamas when you go to the courthouse. Bringing children into the courtroom isn’t a fab idea either. I realize that sometimes it’s difficult to obtain day-care and you may not have any control over when your hearing is scheduled. However, children are unpredictable and the younger they are, the more this is true. It can be very distracting and disruptive to bring the kiddos to the courtroom and it doesn’t make for a happy audience. If the kids are older, and they understand what the court hearing is about, think about the emotional toll it takes on them to see their dad/mom/relative/family friend sentenced or yelled at by the judge. Not a good idea all around. Cell phones are not to be audible in court, and trust me when they do ring, everyone looks around for the guilty party. It’s simple to turn it on vibrate or leave it in the car, so make sure you do. Check with the specific courthouse for its rules also – some do not allow cell phones with cameras in the building unless you’re an attorney. If you can silence your phone for a movie, you can certainly do it for a judge. Throwing a fit on the sidewalk outside the courthouse is always entertaining but not necessarily in a good way. It’s like watching a train wreck – you can’t look away. Yes, we all have personal problems in our lives and it seems some more than others. This doesn’t mean the general public wants to know why all of those people that testified against so and so are complete liars and why the judge was too hard on your friend for his no longer alleged crime. Frankly it all looks ridiculous and not very civilized – wait until you get to your car or house to let it all out. Following these simple suggestions won’t pay your fine or win your motion, but they will help you gain more respect with the judge, lawyers and other courthouse officials. Besides, isn’t a little respect what you wanted in the first place?

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson, or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be – a roommate, a neighbor, a professor, a friend, a lover, or even a complete stranger – but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment they will affect your life in some profound way. Sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible, painful, and unfair at first, but in reflection you find that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential, strength, willpower, or heart. Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness, and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, whatever they may be, life would be like a smoothly paved straight flat road to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless. The people you meet who affect your life, and the success and downfalls you experience, help to create who you are and who you become. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are sometimes the most important ones. If someone loves you, give love back to them in whatever way you can, not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things. If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart. Make every day count. Appreciate every moment and take from those moments everything that you possibly can for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people that you have never talked to before, and listen to what they have to say. Let yourself fall in love, break free, and set your sights high. Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don’t believe in yourself, it will be hard for others to believe in you. You can make anything you wish of your life. Create your own life and then go out and live it with absolutely no regrets. And if you love someone tell them, for you never know what tomorrow may have in store. Learn a lesson in life each day that you live! Today is the tomorrow you were worried about yesterday. Think About it? Was it worth it?

Pet Care
• Shampoo your pet with flea shampoo and spray the animal between shampoos with flea spray. • Place a flea collar in the bag of your vacuum cleaner. Any fleas you sweep up will stay put in there. • If you don't want to use a flea collar with insecticides, active ingredients such as eucalyptus, cedar, lemongrass, rosemary and marigold won't exterminate, but will deter fleas. • Placing an open jar or two of eucalyptus stems and leaves around the house can deter fleas. Place them in rooms where your pet spends the most time (especially those with carpets- fleas love to hide in them.) • Give your dog a flea bath with limonene shampoo, and flea-comb him down thoroughly while he's in the water so the fleas drown. • Try adding a teaspoon of vinegar to each quart of the animal's drinking water. It helps keep pets free of fleas and ticks. • Sprinkle borate powder into crevices of couches and chairs. • Stock your yard with off-leaf larvae-eating nematodes (available at pet and garden stores). • Getting proper nutrition for your pest is the best flea prevention. Add brewer's yeast to your pet's food, as well as essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6. • Spray screens with distilled water containing several drops of bitter orange essential oil. (Fleas hate citrus scent and will avoid crawling in through the screens."

• Oatmeal Bath- Put uncooked oatmeal or rolled oats into a sock or nylon stocking and run a tub full of warm water over it. Soak your dog (cats will rarely let you do this) in the water for 5 to 10 minutes. Oatmeal based shampoos are also available at pet stores. • Aloe Vera- Break off a piece of the plant and apply the thick juice directly to the raw area. • Aggravated skin sores, also known as hot spots, can make your pet miserable. If you see a hot spot developing, clip about one-half to one inch around the sore to prevent hair and other dirt from further aggravating it. Clean the sore with hydrogen peroxide on gauze or a cotton ball, and after it dries spray the area with cortisone cream. Do this twice a day until the sore starts to dry out or a scab begins to form.
Cuts, Scrapes, Abrasions
• Mix together 1-pint water, 1/2-teaspoon salt, and 1/2-teaspoon calendula tincture. • Soak an injured paw in the solution. If the wound is on the body put the solution in a quirt bottle or large syringe and gently apply it to the injured area. • Repeat the soaking or application every 4 to 6 hours for the first 24 hours. Bites and Scratches • Rinse out the fresh wounds and punctures with large amounts of this solution: 1-pint water, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon Echinacea/goldenseal tincture. • Hydrogen peroxide may also be used to clean wounds, but it can damage delicate tissues. • Cat wounds are notorious for forming abscesses. If the abscess is draining, clean it Tissue Trauma • If your pet falls, gets stepped on, is in a fight, or is otherwise bruised, the homeo- with with Echinacea/goldenseal solution. Baking powder miracles 1. Sprinkle it on your ashtrays to reduce bad odor and prevent smoldering. 2. Sprinkle it on your slippers, boots, shoes, and socks to eliminate foul odor. 3. Turn baking soda into modeling clay by combining it with one and 1/4 cups of water and one cup of cornstarch. 4. After feeding your baby, wipe his shirt with a moist cloth sprinkled with baking soda to remove the odor. 5. Wipe your windshield with it to repel rain. 6. Improve the smell of dishrags by soaking them in baking soda and water. 7. Suck it in with your vacuum cleaner to remove the odor. 8. Freshen the air by mixing baking soda with your favorite perfumed bath salts. Put the mixture in small sachet bags. 9. Restore stiff brushes by boiling them in a solution of 1/2 gallon of water, 1/4 cup of vinegar, and a cup of baking soda. 10. Put it under sinks and along basement windows to repel cockroaches and ants. 11. Sprinkle it onto your cat’s litter box to absorb the bad odor. Ha
