● Hundreds of shoppers combing the parking lot during Christmas at WalMart, acting as if they know where they’re parked, when they didn’t have a clue. ● Santa Claus riding a bicycle through town. ● Rumors of a Weigels planning to open a new convenient store in Midtown near Pinnacle Point, along with a Bojangles and O’Charleys. ● Instead of wishing everyone a “Happy Holiday”, most business employees were wishing shoppers a “Merry Christmas”. What a refreshing change than in past years.

The Two-Lane Highway In the 50s, Emory Gap was completely different than it is now.

There was no Hardees, McDonalds, or Taco Bells. In fact, there were just a few small, family-owned businesses along the highway.

There were no street lights or sidewalks. If you walked along the road, you walked in the grass or the ditch.

There was no four-lane highway then, but a two-lane one that ran right through the middle of downtown Emory Gap. It was Highway 27 and ran from the north through Harriman on Emory Street, crossed the old bridge near Riverfront Park, and ran through Pansy Hill in South Harriman.

It then ran beside the present Dollar General Store, crossed Ruritan Road and onto what is now State St. From there, it ran through the gap and bared right and ran behind where Hardees is now located.

Houses lined the road along the old section. Most of them are still there on the left side of the old road. Some families I remember along this old stretch were the Duggers, Huckabees, Bartletts, and Walkers, and many more that I can’t recall.

It continued along beside the railroad track into Rockwood, and southward.

Back then, there was very little traffic. People didn’t jump into their cars and run to the store or drive to town for something. A trip to town was mostly done on Saturdays, and was a real event.

My cousin Eddie lived closer to the road than I did, and we would sit in his yard right on the highway, and play a game. We would take turns to see what kind of cars we would have when we grew up. He would take the first one, then me the next, and so on. We sometimes waited over a minute for the next one to come by.

Daddy had a service station in the middle of the gap, and I remember sitting at the old gas pumps and playing a game by myself. I would choose a color, and watch and wait for that color car to come by. (We had few toys back then!)

Can you imagine kids doing this nowadays?

It’s sad to know they will never enjoy making such simple childhood memories as these.

Times have changed....sadly, for the worse.

When we see a snow-globe fall from Kane’s dying fingers to shatter on the stairs, it sets up cinema’s greatest metaphor for the life unlived. Childhood days of sledding are a dreamy, white-shrouded vision, but one sealed off behind glass, an idyll the tycoon can no longer access.

It’s a Wonderful Life (Frank Capra, 1946)

The sheer quantity of snow in Capra’s holiday classic required a pioneering special effect. The traditional white-painted cornflakes made too much noise, so 6000 gallons of the fire-fighting chemical foamite, mixed with soap and pumped through a wind machine, were used instead.

The Shining (Stanley Kubrick, 1980)

They were warned, the Torrance family, that winters in the Overlook Hotel would be fierce: the snowdrift comes right up to second floor windows, enabling Danny to be pushed out and run into the maze to hide. It’s here that his dad gets lost for good, following tiny footsteps into a frozen void.

Groundhog Day (Harold Ramis, 1993)

Lucky for Phil Connors that there’s always snow on Groundhog Day, or how else would he perfect the art of ice sculpture? Ramis’s immortal time-loop comedy is partly about being stuck in one climate and learning to make the most of it – constant slush is no one’s idea of fun.

White Christmas (Michael Curtiz, 1954)

“May all your Christmases be white” is a long-abandoned dream here – but less so in Vermont. Irving Berlin’s song has become more famous than the film it belongs in, though he came up with the melody on the set of Top Hat (1935), and used it first in the CrosbyAstaire vehicle Holiday Inn (1942).

The Empire Strikes Back (Irvin Kershner, 1980)

Settling a cow case

A big-city lawyer was representing the railroad in a lawsuit filed by an old rancher. The rancher's prize bull was missing from the section through which the railroad passed. The rancher only wanted to be paid the fair value of the bull.

The case was scheduled to be tried before the justice of the peace in the back room of the general store.

The attorney for the railroad immediately cornered the rancher and tried to get him to settle out of court. The lawyer did his best selling job, and finally the rancher agreed to take half of what he was asking.

After the rancher had signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn't resist gloating a little over his success, telling the rancher, "You know, I hate to tell you this, old man, but I put one over on you in there. I couldn't have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the caboose when the train went through your ranch that morning. I didn't have one witness to put on the stand. I bluffed you!"

The old rancher replied, "Well, I'll tell you, young feller, I was a little worried about winning that case myself, because that durned bull came home this morning."

Hi Readers...Let's pick up where we left last edition's story from my friend, the late Lloyd "Moose" Buddy" Morris and find out if he got his "Santa Fe Flyer."

Lloyd writes," On Christmas Eve 1950, Ronnie and Terry were put to bed early while my sister and I walked to the Methodist Church on Kingston Avenue for services. How I miss that little church and especially on Christmas Eve. Just to once again smell the aroma from all of the brown paper bags that lined the Church, each filled with apples, oranges, nuts, and candy would make for a wonderful Christmas in itself.

Most kids today could never begin to understand just how much those brown paper bags meant to most of the kids growing up in Rockwood in the 40's and 50's.

After Church, June and I walked home and I remember that year. It was especially bitter cold and one of the few Christmas Eves that we had snow coming down. Sis and I were filled with the excitement of knowing that Santa Claus had already been at our house, and walked home as quickly as we could."

"I rushed into the house and looked around the tree only to find no train. How my little heart was broken, to this day, I remember it as if it was only yesterday. I asked where my presents were and Dad handed me a small gift wrapped box, and with tears in my eyes, I opened it.

Inside the paper was a small truck, and Dad said that was the only gift under the tree for me. The shock of getting only the little truck was too much and I began to cry even more. How could it be, not only did I not get my train, just one little old truck and not much of a truck at that.

Dad told me that if I couldn't be thankful for at least getting a gift for Christmas, even a small one, that I should go to bed. I couldn't believe it, not only did I just get a little old dumb truck for Christmas, but here I was being sent to bed.

Well, that really did it and while I had been crying before, there is no other way to describe it, but to say that I now started to bawling with the tears flowing nonstop. Dad said in a voice that I knew, that I had better mind, " I told you if you can't act any better than that, then go to bed right now."

There in the middle of my bedroom floor going around on a track laid out in a Figure 8, was my Santa Fe Flyer. No little boy in the world could have went through a more emotional Christmas on that Christmas Eve of 1950 than I did, and a precious Christmas memory was made.

I do not remember looking at my Dad's eyes that night as I was too excited with my gift, but I know in my heart that it made as much of a memory for him as it did for me.

Each year, when I place a train around our Christmas tree, I always say, "Thanks Dad for you and Santa giving me a precious Christmas memory. Sometimes I will configure the track into a figure 8 and just sit for a long time and remember those wonderful days of the 1950's on Kingston Ave. Thanks Lloyd for that wonderful story that he told me a few years ago. As I said in last month's Roane Reader, Lloyd Morrris was a friend of mine growing up in Rockwood and shared a lot of stories with me before he passed away recently. Until next month.....Ray..

According to 24/7 Wall St., here’s a list of companies heading for bankruptcy, and brand names that will disappear in the coming year.

Damon’s Grill & Sports Bar - Stores closed: 78%-Total stores: 30-Stores closed: 107-2011 sales: $70 million-Decline in sales:-75% Country Kitchen - Pct. of stores closed: 79.1% - Total stores: 52 - Stores closed: 197 - 2011 sales: $44 million - Pct. decline in sales: -82.4% Ground Round Grill & Bar - Pct. of stores closed: 80.9% - Total stores: 25 - Stores closed: 106 - 2011 sales: $37.5 million - Pct. decline in sales: -83.4% Bennigan’s - Pct. of stores closed: 88.2% - Total stores: 33 - Stores closed: 247 - 2011 sales: $62 million - Pct. decline in sales: -89.0% Avon -Long time CEO, Andrea Jung, was ousted late last year after nearly wrecking the company. Avon’s new CEO, Sherilyn S. McCoy, formerly of Johnson & Johnson, joined the company in April. She has not run a public corporation, let alone one in big trouble. Avon, however, is fortunate that it may have a suitor. Perfume company Coty offered $24.75 a share for Avon, nearly 20% above Avon’s stock price at the time. Avon dragged its feet and Coty withdrew its offer. But Coty will be back.

The Oakland Raiders - The Raiders will play in the NFL next year. They just will not play in Oakland. The team, founded in 1960, was one of the original members of the AFL and joined the NFL when the leagues merged in 1970. One reason the team will leave Oakland again is the financial plans of the new owners. His heirs and several smaller shareholders now control the team. Current team managing owner already has said he may move the Raiders back to LA to get a better stadium deal..

Suzuki - American Suzuki Motor sold 10,695 cars and light trucks in the first five months. That was down 3.9% compared to 2011. One reason the company has trouble moving its vehicles is the poor reputation of its cars.

Pacific Sunwear - It built its reputation offering “California-style” accessories, primarily sunglasses, shoes and swimwear. It was started in Newport Beach in 1980. Why is the company in so much trouble? It is too small and is in a commoditized business. Nearly every major department store chain sells products similar to those Pacific Sunwear offers.

Pacific Sunwear, meanwhile, has only 729 small stores. What will happen to the retailer? It could be bought by a larger company.

Current TV - Al Gore’s Current TV was on life support even before it fired its only bankable star, Keith Olbermann, in March following a set of battles with the host over his perks. He was replaced by serial talk show host failure Eliot Spitzer. Compared to March figures, Spitzer’s ratings in April were down nearly 70%, according to TV audience measurement firm Nielsen.

Talbots - Battered retailer The Talbots is supposed to be taken private by Sycamore Partners for over $190 million. The offer was delayed for some reason. Sycamore already has lowered its offer once. Among all the badly damaged retailers hurt by the recession, compounded by its failure to appeal to consumers with distinctive products, Talbots has to be near the top of the list.

American Airlines - It’s parent AMR filed for bankruptcy in 2011. The airline itself still operates largely as it did prior to the filing. Labor costs will be cut, along with debt service and lease obligations for airplanes. AMR says it plans to emerge from Chapter 11 as a viable airline. But that will not happen. US Airways has made it clear that it wants to buy American’s assets. As soon as the rumors of a potential buyout started in April, some of American’s largest unions said they backed such a plan as a way to protect jobs.

Household Hints  Create a handy helper when cutting quilt blocks; cut a pattern from a piece of fine sandpaper. This will keep your material from sliding while you are cutting the pattern out.  Soak neglected paint brushes in hot vinegar to clean and make them pliable again.  If you have unburned candles on your mantle or dining room table that have gotten dirty or faded try this trick. Wet a piece of absorbent cotton with rubbing alcohol and wipe the candles gently. They will look like new.  Heat your babies extra bottle and place it in an insulated bag before going to bed. When baby awakens the bottle will be ready and will save you from losing precious sleep.  To prevent leaking in a thermos bottle, dip the cork in sugar before placing in the bottle, it will stop the leaking.  When washing clothes that catch lint easily, turn them wrong side out and fastening each end with a clean rubber band keeps lint from getting on the right side.  If you find yourself out of window cleaner, rubbing alcohol makes a great substitute. Alcohol works great on bathroom mirrors too.  Place lace doilies in a lingerie bag before placing them in the washer.

They get clean without chancing the delicate lace getting torn.  Put a piece of charcoal in the refrigerator to absorb the odor of onions, fish and other strong scented foods.  To keep granite pans and dishes from rusting out on the chipped places, paint the chipped areas with aluminum pain. It really works.  When cleaning your oven, set a small dish of household ammonia in the oven overnight. Next morning it can be cleaned without any scrubbing, as the fumes soften the scorched spots so that they can be easily wiped off.  For copper and brass cleaning, use baking soda, white vinegar and a little flour to thicken. Also, tomato ketchup can make your copper gleam better than an expensive polish. Simply mix ketchup and water in equal parts. Apply it to your copper with a soft cloth and wipe off.

Penny Pinchers  Use aluminum foil in the bottom of your self cleaning electric range. With a gas range, place it on the lower rack to catch the spills. Otherwise you restrict the flow. Replacing the foil is easier and much cheaper than running the cleaning cycle. Run the cleaning cycle only when necessary.  Instead of buying Drano or other products, pour two cups baking powder in a large pot of water. When it boils; pour down the clogged drain. It unclogs immediately.  New shower caps from hotels, make great bowl covers. When you travel, most hotels provide you with the disposable shower caps. Tuck them in your suitcase and take them home to your kitchen. After you have used one, do not throw it away.

A little dish detergent and water washes them well. Set them up to dry and reuse over and over.  Zip lock bags; wash, rinse and reuse them. With a little dish detergent, a good rinse, the bags are ready to be used over and over. Sometimes you have to turn them inside out to dry; you want them to stand up to drain well. Don't reuse the bags if meat was stored in them as this is too much chance for salmonella poisoning.  Keep nuts fresh by freezing them. Buying nuts is expensive, so don’t let them sit on the shelf and get rancid. If there is a re-sealable bag, then use it, otherwise place the nuts, package and all in a zip lock bag and put in the freezer, they will last indefinitely.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes HATTIE SHILLINGS

With these cold, winter nights upon us, try one of these delicious soups to warm your innards!

Grilled Chicken Noodle Soup 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 3 boneless chicken breast halves 4 cups chicken broth 1 cup sliced carrots 1/3 cup frozen green peas

1 cup chopped celery 1/2 red onion, chopped 3/4 cup chopped mushrooms 1 cup uncooked egg noodles

Heat oil in a medium skillet over medium high heat. Fry chicken pieces in the oil until slightly browned and the juices run clear.

Remove from the pan and drain on a paper towel.

In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, heat chicken broth over medium heat. Add the carrots, peas, celery, onion and mushrooms. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for 20 to 25 minutes. Add the noodles and cook for 10 more minutes or until noodles are al dente.

Baked Beef Stew 2 lbs. stew meat, cut in cubes 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 14.5 oz. can tomatoes w/juice 4 carrots, cut into 1 inch pieces 1 cup water 2 chopped celeries 3 tablespoons instant tapioca 3 potatoes, peeled and cubed 1 tablespoon beef bouillon granules 1 onion, roughly chopped 2 teaspoons white sugar 1 slice bread, cubed 1 1/2 teaspoons salt Preheat oven to 375. Lightly grease a 9 x 13 inch baking dish. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the stew meat, drain and set aside. In a mixing bowl, combine the tomatoes, water, tapioca, beef bouillon granules, sugar, salt and pepper. Stir in the beef, carrots, celery, potatoes, onion, and bread cubes. Pour into the prepared baking dish. Cover and bake for 2 hours, or until meat and vegetables are tender.

The Ultimate Chili 1 lb. lean ground beef salt and pepper to taste 3 cans dark red kidney beans 3 cans Mexican-style stewed tomatoes 2 stalks celery, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped

1/4 cup red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon dried parsley 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 dash Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup red wine

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef until evenly browned. Drain off grease, and season to taste with salt and pepper. In a slow cooker, combine the cooked beef, kidney beans, tomatoes, celery, red bell pepper, and red wine vinegar. Season with chili powder, cumin, parsley, basil and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to distribute ingredients evenly. Cook on High for 6 hours, or on Low for 8 hours. Pour in the wine during the last 2 hours.

Gabin' with Glander By: Jerry Lemons

The Great Gas War An unusual unseasonable spate of mild weather had descended on Emory Gap, with high humidity. It was in the 70s by noon, and by the time I walked down to Glander's, I was actually sweating.

Glander was sprawled back on the old car seat between the gas station and market.

"Hey, Sour," he greeted me. "Take a load off. You look like you're about to kneel over."

I sat beside him and wiped the sweat off my brow.

"Hey Merlin," Glander hollered. Merlin came bopping out of the garage. "Bring Sour here a cold pop, and while you're at it, bring me one." Merlin bopped into the market.

"You 'bout to get it, son?" Glander hollered at Solomon who was up on a ladder at the gas price pole.

"Just about," Solomon hollered back.

I saw him pull out the last three numbers of 95.9 on the gas price and put in a 94.9.

"Going down on your gas, hunh?" I asked.

Glander tilted back his Bull of the Woods baseball cap and wagged his head. "Yap," he replied. "It ain't 'cause I want to, but I got to.

Gotta stay below the competition. You know I advertise in the Roane Reader 'at I've got the cheapest gas in Roane County. Well, 'at ain't me just blowin' the breeze. It's the truth. I pride myself on it. So I gotta stay below the competition, don't you see." He nodded toward the highway. "And I tell ye, it's gettin' serious. It's gettin' bad to the bone. I don't know what Tiddle's game is, but he orter know 'at he ain't gonna undersell me."

I looked across the highway at Tiddle's gas station. I noticed his gas was $2.95.9 a gallon. "Well, you got Tiddle beat," I said.

"Yeah, I figure $2.95.9 is just about Tiddle's limit," Glander replied. "I don't see him goin' down anymore."

Merlin came bopping out of the market. He came up to me and handed me a Coke. "Ere yeh go, Mr. Sour, ice-cold co cola. Colder 'an a witch's wit." He let out a rasping half-chuckle, half-snigger.

"Get it? Witch's wit. You know, usually it's colder than a witch's--" "Yeah, he knows what ye mean," Glander interrupted Merlin.

"You know, old Tiddle thought he'd pulled a slick one on me," Glander went on. "Sometime last night, he changed his gas price to $2.98.9 so he'd be cheaper 'an me 'is mornin' when we opened up.

Well, it worked for about five minutes. Then I po-lightly changed mine to 97.9. 'At took him aback for a few hours. Then 'long 'bout ten 'is mornin' Tiddle sneaked up 'ere and changed his to $2.96.9."

Glander chuckled, shifted the quid in his mouth and spat at an old empty oil can. He hit it squarely. "Well, needless to say, it didn't work. You know Tiddle's a foreigner. He ain't from Roane County; he's from Clinton. He just don't get it. He don't know what the deal is 'round here yet. But I got a feelin' he's learnin' fast."

Growing Up In Harriman (1933-1945) Part 1 By: Pete Semanick I was born and grew up in a small town-Harriman, also known as the “Town that Temperance Built”. As a child I had no idea what that meant. I was born in 1930 and my childhood was much different than most children today: people knew their neighbors well and watched out for one another; doors were never locked; walking home in the dark was not scary and we were never warned to watch out for strangers.

We lived across the tracks at 900 Crescent Street in a wood frame, two story, four-unit house with the most minimum of comforts: both units on each floor shared a common toilette located on the back porch-similar to an outhouse but with flushing capability. The house has been gone now for many years, the only remnants being the stone steps that once led to the lower level units from Crescent Street and which once held a secret hiding place I shared with my cousin Tommy.

The house was so close to the L and N railroad tracks it shook each time a passenger or freight train rolled through. That lonely sound of the distant train whistle alerted us one would soon be passing by.

Other trains included the Southern and Tennessee Central, which terminated at Harriman but returned with passengers headed to Nashville.

On the ground level to the rear of the house stood a big open field with shared neighborhood gardens growing corn, beans, okra, and other vegetables. Located at the base of the large embankment at the railroad tracks, a small but constant flowing stream existed which would often overflow during heavy rains when a small culvert under the embankment would become blocked by debris - many times it came close to flooding our house.

Our neighbors along Crescent Street sat on their porches and greeted each person by name. On Saturday nights the porches echoed the Grand Ole Opry broadcast from 650 AM, WSN Nashville: Uncle Dave Macon was always the announcer introducing such legendary performers as Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, Bill Monroe, Roy Acuff, Minnie Pearl, Hank Snow and Little Jimmy Dickens, to name a few, but always interspersed with ads from their major sponsor, Martha White. It saddens me as I recount the “good old days” of my youth, that so many families no longer take the time to relax and enjoy simple things together.

When I had to leave Harriman in 1945 to live with my mother who had relocated to Dayton, Ohio, I soon came to realize my short life as I had known it in Harriman would never be the same. Dayton was too big and folks were much different. People barely knew their neighbors and they seldom spoke to each other. It was in Dayton where I was sometimes known endearingly as the “ridge runner” who had a southern accent.

I never have found out who let the dogs out, the way to get to Sesame Street, why Dora doesn't just use Google maps, why we don't ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery", why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed, why "abbreviated" is such a long word, why lemon juice is made with artificial flavour yet dishwashing liquid is made with real lemons, why they sterilize the needle for lethal injections, why do you have to "put your two cents in" but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to? Why did Joanie love Chachi? If a deaf person has to go to court is it still called a hearing? Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane? Does the alphabet song and twinkle twinkle little star have the same tune? Why did you just try to sing those two previous songs? And just what is Victoria's secret? You see, the world just has to keep going. I have too many questions...I actually stole this from a friend, who stole from a friend , who stole from a friend , who stole from a friend.

1. You can use salt to kill weeds, especially weeds that are located in rock gardens and driveways. Simply sprinkle the salt on the ground near the roots of the weeds.

2. Make pecans and walnuts easier to shell by soaking them in salt water overnight first.

3. Place artificial flowers in a bag, add a half cup of table salt, and then shake them vigorously. Remove the flowers and shake them off, and they will be clean!

4. Help fresh cut flowers last longer by placing a pinch of salt in their water!

5. Soak potatoes in salt water for several hours before you use them. This will help to "leech out" some of their starch content. Also, salt water will keep potatoes and apples white.

6. Use salt and a damp rag to remove rust from auto bumpers, bike handles and metals; rinse thoroughly.

7. Dip your toothbrush in table salt and use it to clean and whiten your teeth. Salt also helps promote healthy gums.

8. Place a pinch of salt in your ground coffee before you turn your coffee maker on to help reduce the acidic taste.

9. Throw a quarter of a cup of table salt in your fireplace when you're using it to help loosen any soot that has built up in your chimney.

10. Spoon two teaspoons of salt into a cup of water and stir. Gently place an egg in the water. If it sinks, the egg is fresh. If it floats, the egg is old.

11. Make dough for your kids by mixing a cup of flour, a half cup of salt, two teaspoons of cream of tartar, and a cup of water in a pan. Cook the mixture over medium heat while stirring constantly until it becomes thick. Allow it to cool and store it in an airtight container.

12. Water will boil quicker if you add a little salt to the water.

13. Soak brooms and toothbrushes in salt water before using them, and they will last longer.

14. Cut an orange in half and sprinkle both halves with table salt. They will freshen the air in your house!

15. Pour salt on a freshly stained cotton fabric. Soak the fabric in cold water for thirty minutes, and then wash it separately.

16. Table salt will also remove stains from coffee cups, china, and piano keys too.

17. Mix up two tablespoons salt and cornstarch and add enough water to make a thick paste. Use this paste to fix small holes in plaster.

18. Pour a half cup of salt into your washing machine along with curtains and rugs to help make them look brighter!

19. To put out a kitchen fire, throw salt on it! You can also use salt to put out a barbecue fire as well.

20. Rub a damp rag and salt over windows to keep them from becoming frosty in the wintertime.

21. Make a salt painting by peeling off the back of a sheet of contact paper. Sprinkle salt all over the back, and then press it down. Allow it to set a few days, and then shake it. Use water paints and a brush to gently paint a picture on the salty surface.

22. Clean burned pans easily by boiling water and salt in them. Use salt to clean brass bottomed pans too.

23. Dry clean your dog by sprinkling salt on their fur. Brush the salt out along with dirt and fleas.

24. Use table salt as an exfoliator for your skin! Simply add salt to some baby oil, then use; rinse well.

25. Keep any type of cheese free from mold in your refrigerator. Just wrap the cheese in cheesecloth that has been wetted with salt water.

Most Snow in One Day in the U.S.

The most snow to fall in any 24 hour period is 75.8 inches, well over six feet, that landed at Silver Lake, Colorado. The mountain lake sits at 10,220 feet elevation about 40 miles northwest of Denver. Its record-setting snowstorm began at 2:30 pm on the afternoon of April 14, 1921.

After 24 hours, the snowflakes still kept coming and by 6 pm on April 15, 1921 a record 87 inches had fell. The blizzard continued non-stop for 32 hours, ultimately leaving 95 inches of fresh snow on the ground. This set yet another record for the deepest accumulation from one continuous snowfall.

The biggest snowfall for a single calendar day belongs to another Colorado location, Georgetown where 63 inches landed on December 4, 1913. This small town with plenty of history is nestled high in the mountains at 8,550 feet elevation. Another dozen states have also measured three or more feet of snow arriving in one day.

Places that have set state records for the heaviest one-day snowfall amounting to three feet or more.

"our car got broken" By: Debra Carpenter Last Wednesday, my husband, daughter, and I were rear-ended by a semi. It was incredibly scary and we were so fortunate to have come through without serious injury. After the accident happened and the shock wore off, I realized that even though I had been saying over and over “We are so lucky,” I hadn’t even really thought about how fortunate we were. So many awful things could have happened. As we were waiting on the ambulance to arrive, I held my daughter who was still upset, scared, and in tears. She kept repeating that “Our car got broken.” It made me so sad to see her so scared, but grateful that being scared was the worst of her problems. She is only 2 years old and weighs 30 pounds. She was closest to the impact of the truck going 60 miles per hour that hit directly behind her and totaled our car, but she only suffered a busted lip and several bruises. I wrote a thank-you note to the carseat company, but I know that more than the carseat was responsible for her safety, and we are so thankful for that.

This was the first bad accident I had ever been involved in. I have never been in such a disorienting, scary situation. Even though the accident lasted only a few seconds, it felt like an hour. It seemed like time stopped while our car was pushed forward and spun around after being hooked by the truck. It felt like an eternity passed while I waited for it to stop so I could check my daughter’s legs, which looked like they were being crushed under the weight of my husband and his seat, which had broken and fallen onto her legs. My glasses and shoes (what the heck?) were knocked off from the impact, and that made it even more confusing when the car stopped moving and I tried to get my daughter out of her carseat.

As luck would have it, a state trooper happened to be getting gas at the station across the street from our accident and was able to respond immediately. Then, one of my husband’s friends drove by the accident a few minutes later and was able to stop and help keep us calm while we waited for an ambulance.

My point in telling you these things is not to make you feel sorry for me or my family, to upset you, or even to tell a story. I just wanted to share the importance of fully recognizing the blessings in life and reminding yourself often of how precious they are. Things like this accident are not unusual in life, and they always seem unfair. They do serve to remind us not to take our loved ones for granted. We’ve all heard the saying “You don’t realize what you’ve got until it’s gone,” and I think it’s cliché for a reason.

I had been taking my husband and daughter for granted—they were already mine and I felt lucky to have them, but assumed that we were immune to harm. But after the accident, I was forced to look at them as what they really are: people that are vulnerable to accidents and only temporarily around on Earth. It inspired me to try and live in the moment more—taking time to realize the small bits of life that make it so enjoyable. Whether that means reading one more book with my daughter before bed, hugging my husband for a full minute when he gets home, or just listening to the infectious sound of my daughter laughing at our cat, I want to fully experience my life and be able to say that I didn’t take it and the people closest to me for granted. I hope my experience could inspire another person decide to make the most of the limited time on Earth and appreciate their family fully. There’s no better time to hold your family close and enjoy their company than the Christmas season—I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Myths about Winter We'd like to clear up a variety of misconceptions about the winter months. Read, learn, and amaze others with your new cold-weather knowledge!

Myth #1: You can "catch cold” from going outside in winter.

Nope. Viruses and bacteria make you sick, not being cold or wet.

Colds, flus, and cases of pneumonia are most often spread indoors where people are in close proximity, which makes outside the most germ-free place to be in the winter!

Myth #2: Days get shorter in winter.

Sure, there are fewer hours of daylight in winter than in the summer months. But the days actually start to grow longer after the first official day of winter, which occurs on Dec. 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere.

Myth #3: Plants stop growing in winter.

Many plants flower or bear berries during the winter months, including ornamental plants such as holly, winter honeysuckle, and bayberry. Winter weeds (e.g. annual bluegrass, henbit, common chickweed, and speedwell) will pop up in turned-over soil and patches of lawn. And cold-resistant vegetables also grow, such as carrots, parsnips, cabbage, and a variety of greens.

Myth #4: Most birds fly south.

Just look outside after a snowmelt to see that this isn’t true! Depending where you live, you might see chickadees, cardinals, jays, magpies, woodpeckers, and titmice among the many varieties of birds that will be out dining on dormant insects and seeds, important food sources in the winter months.

Myth #5: Bears sleep all winter.

Not really. Black bears awake at times, give birth to their young during the winter, and can arouse easily if disturbed. Bear hibernation is sometimes known as “partial hibernation” because it differs from the deep winter sleep of other animals such as groundhogs and chipmunks, which experience significant drops in body temperature and heart rate. A bear’s heart does slow down, and the bear can go without eating, drinking, or eliminating wastes for the entire season.

Myth #6: Every snowflake is unique.

Okay, so this one is mostly true, with an interesting exception. When talking about lacy, intricate snowflakes (the kind we try to recreate with white paper and scissors), scientists say there are far too many ways these tiny complex crystals can develop to allow for two identical flakes. But sometimes snowflakes fall before developing their unique characteristics and arrive as very simple shapes, like prisms or plates.

Who is Jack Frost?

Jack Frost is the personification of frost and cold weather. A variant of Old Man Winter held responsible for frosty weather, for nipping the nose and toes in such weather, coloring the foliage in autumn, and leaving fernlike patterns on cold windows in winter.

Why is it that when you transport something by car, it's called a shipment, but when you transport something by ship, it's called cargo?

Is The Art of Procrastination Costing You Serious Money?

The percentage of people who admit to having problems with procrastination has quadrupled in recent times, according to a study by the University of Calgary. When it comes to procrastinating on your finances, the cost only compounds with time. We can always find a "reason" to put things off that we know we should be doing financially - whether it's saving more, paying down debt, or rearranging an investment portfolio.

Scooping up chickens The farmer's son was returning from the market with the crate of chicken's his father had entrusted to him, when all of a sudden the box fell and broke open. Chickens scurried off in different directions, but the determined boy walked all over the neighborhood scooping up the wayward birds and returning them to the repaired crate.

Hoping he had found them all, the boy reluctantly returned home, expecting the worst.

"Pa, the chickens got loose," the boy confessed sadly, "but I managed to find all twelve of them."

"Well, you did real good, son," the farmer beamed. "You left with seven."

How are you doing stranger?

A tourist was passing through on the way to town by car, and experiences mechanical problems with the car. It stalls and he parks the car by the side of the road and waits for help.

A farmer passes by with a truck full of farm animals. The farmer offers the tourist a lift to town and explains that he is bringing his animals to the market, where they will be auctioned off.

Well, the farmer being so engrossed in his story, unintentionally wanders into the other side of road where another vehicle is coming in the other direction.

The farmer attempts to avoid the possible collision. He just misses the other car, but crashes the truck into the side of the road.

The tourist winds up thrown in a ditch and suffers broken ribs and a broken arm and leg and is in extreme pain. The farm animals are all badly messed up and the farmer suffers cuts and scrapes.

He gets out of the truck and looks at his farm animals.

The chickens all have broken limbs and can barely move. "These chickens are all useless! Nobody will want to buy these chickens anymore!" bellows the farmer. With that, he grabs and loads his shotgun and blows away the chickens.

Next, he sees the pigs and they are all lame and bleeding profusely.

"These pigs are all worthless now! I'll get nothing for them!" yells the farmer. With great rage, the farmer reloads his shotgun and blows away the pigs.

The farmer looks at the sheep and they all have broken limbs and their wool is all bloodied. "Worthless sheep!" screams the farmer and with that, he reloads his shotgun and blows away the sheep.

The injured tourist witnesses all of this carnage in great horror.

The farmer then moves over to the side of the ditch and looks at the tourist. "Are you okay down there?" asked the farmer.

"NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!" the tourist yelled back.

THE WRITER'S PAGE The week after Christmas

20 Innocent Children Twas' 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38 when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate.

Their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air.

They could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.

Twas the week after Christmas, and all through the house, Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.

The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste, At the holiday parties, had gone to my waist.

I said to myself, as I only can, "You can't spend a winter disguised as a man!"

So--away with the last of the sour cream dip, Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip

They were filled with such joy, they didn't know what to say.

They remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.

"Where are we?" asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.

"This is heaven." declared a small boy.

"We're spending Christmas at God's house."

When I got on the scales there arose such a number!

When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber).

I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared, The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared.

Every last bit of food that I like must be banished, 'Till all the additional ounces have vanished.

I won't have a cookie--not even a lick, I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick.

The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese, And the way I'd never said, "No thank you, please."

As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt, And prepared once again to do battle with dirt.

I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie, I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.

I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore, But isn't that what winter is for?

When what to their wondering eyes did appear, But Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near.

He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.

Then He opened His arms and He called them by name.

And in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring: Those children all flew into the arms of their King, And as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace, One small girl turned and looked at Jesus' face.

And as if He could read all the questions she had, He gently whispered to her, "I'll take care of mom and dad."

Then He looked down on earth, the world far below, He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe, Then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand, "Let My power and presence re-enter this land!

May this country be delivered from the hands of fools I'm taking back my nation. I'm taking back my schools!"

Then He and the children stood up without a sound.

"Come now my children, let me show you around."

Excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.

All displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.

What to do with old newspapers

1. Painting Mask - Cut sheets of newspapers and use painter's tape to cover windows when you paint. When you're done, simply remove the paper and discard it!

2. Inexpensive Wrapping Paper - Wrap birthday gifts with old newspaper! You can even cut thin strips to make a bow too!

3. Quick 'n Easy Clean Up - Lay folded newspaper on your counter or table before you cut up messy fruits or vegetables. Once done, just fold up and throw away!

4. Picnic Table Cloth - Tape down sheets of newspaper on your picnic table so it can collect spills, drips, etc. Rip it up and throw it away when you're done!

5. Floor Covers - Place several folded sheets of old newspaper on the floors of your vehicle. It will absorb water and help keep mud and dirt off the carpet!

6. Ripen Tomatoes - Wrap green tomatoes in sheets of newspaper. Then, layer them in a box and close the lid. Check on them every couple days, and they will eventually ripen up to a rosy red color!

7. Fruit and Vegetable Drawer Liner - Place sheets of newspaper in the fruit and vegetable drawer in your refrigerator. Not only will the paper catch messes from rotted produce, but it will also keep the drawer free from odors.

8. Sleep Outside Better - Place several sheets of newspaper underneath your sleeping bag when you sleep under the stars. The newspaper will keep your bag dry, free from dirt and grass stains, and provide a warm padding.

9. Fireplace Logs - Roll old newspapers up and tie them tightly with string. Then, use them in your fireplace as makeshift logs. Each one burns for awhile, and doing this will save on wood.

10. Make A Funnel - Roll up a newspaper to make a paper funnel. It's best used for dry goods, but it can hold up to water for awhile.

11. Table Padding - Place several sheets of old newspaper on your kitchen or dining room table. Then, place a tablecloth over them. The newspaper will take the place of an expensive padding. It will protect your table top from spills and other damage.

12. Shoe and Boot Mat - Place a folded up newspaper beside the door and place wet and muddy boots on it. It will keep the mud contained.

13. Garden Mulch - Use newspapers as mulch in your fruit, vegetable, or flower garden. Simply cut a hole in the middle of each sheet and slide it over the plant. It will keep weeds down and hold water too!

14. Makeshift Umbrella - Get caught in a rain storm? Use a newspaper to cover your head and shoulders until you reach shelter.

15. Packing - Shred and use newspaper as inexpensive packing when you send fragile items through the mail.

16. Stinky Tennis Shoes? - Crumple up balls of old newspaper and stuff them in your shoes to remove the odors. Let sit overnight, then remove and discard.

17. Window Cleaner - Use vinegar and water and old newspapers to clean windows and mirrors. The combination will make your glass shine and leave it lint free too!

18. Shelf Lining - Use old newspapers to line your cabinet, dresser, pantry, or bathroom shelves. They're cheap to use and easy to put in and remove!

19. Litter Box Liners - Place newspapers in the bottom of your cat's box. You'll use less litter, and they'll absorb odors and wetness too!

20. Cooler Deodorizer - Place several crumpled up balls of newspaper in coolers you're storing for the winter. They'll help to keep the inside of the coolers smelling fresh!

21. Grill Cleaner - Soak newspapers in clean water. Then, lay the sheets across a warm barbecue grill. Close the lid and let them soak for an hour or so. Then, remove the papers and wipe the grills clean!

22. Fire Starters - Use strips of old newspaper to start a bon fire, charcoal grill, camp fire, ect.

23. Paper Dolls - Fold several sheets of newspapers just to a thickness you can cut through with a pair of scissors. Then, cut out dolls and unfold the sheets. You'll have connected paper dolls!

24. Hat Shapers - Before you store a hat away in a closet, fill it with newspaper. The newspaper will help it to retain its shape so it doesn't get flat.

25. Cheap Rags - Use old newspaper as rags in your garage to wipe your greasy hands on, to wipe off paint brushes, to wipe up oil spills, and to clean up gasoline spills!

Drunk driver

Royal Thai - Ban U-Tapao 631st Combat Support Group 635th Civil Engineering Squadron APO San Francisco 96330 10 July 1966 - 30 April 1967

PETE SEMANICK Here I am, left in the middle of a tropical jungle with my crew of firemen and no one else in sight. Lining each side of the runway were several old T-6 (Texan) aircraft, which I later found out, constituted the Thai Air Force in this area of Thailand. Fifteen minutes later a blue Air Force station wagon came clattering down the runway with a Thai driver behind the wheel. He spoke English and told us he was there to take us to the American air base. What an experience and what an impression of my new assignment!!

We traveled through more jungle on a dusty narrow dirt road and finally reached a glimpse of civilization. It was a small village called Sattahip: small huts, flimsy shop buildings and a full view of the open sea. I soon learned this beautiful water was the famous “Sea of Siam” (now known at the Gulf of Thailand).

A few minutes later we arrived at the main gate of U-Tapao Air Base. There wasn’t much to see, just hooches (twenty person tents with canvas tops, screen covered sides with hinged corrugated metal siding to keep out the blowing sand and water from the heavy rains) and miles of concrete aircraft parking ramps and runways.

Although still in the early construction phase, this was to be the largest air base in SE Asia with a huge seaport for off loading various types of fuel for the war effort.

With all the traveling I did not have time to realize the impact of the heat and humidity. The first thing I wanted to do after in-processing was get a nice cold shower. Our quarters consisted of one of those hooches described above-twelve men to a hooch with six GI cot beds on each side. This reminded me of my long forgotten days at Nellis AFB, but without large fans to circulate the air.

The hooches were arranged in long rows with a large hooch type latrine near the center. Gravel walkways separated the ends of hooches, but the sides had just enough clearance that with arms outstretched one could touch sides of each hooch.

We soon discovered the perfect time for a shower was before reveille. Water was limited in quantity as the freshly dug wells frequently collapsed due to the sandy soil. This meant a shortage of potable water on many occasions. At this early stage the base officials had not been able to negotiate the water rights of a nearby reservoir with the Thai authorities.

My duty assignment was not only Fire Chief but I was also placed on orders to be First Sergeant. I was the ranking NCO and our Commander decided I was perfect for the job. I had mentioned to him in causal conversation that I was once a First Sergeant at Spangdahlem back in 1955. We only had a handful of personnel so I knew the job would be quite easy.

With this dual job, I decided it would be best for me to move into the fire station and out of the small hooch. The fire station was next door to the Orderly Room and across the street from the dining hall.

The fire station was one of the largest buildings on base and it was a relief to have the extra room.

Although the fire station was temporary it was far better than

T-6 Texan motorized firefighting equipment on hand; one dilapidated 1954 O-11A crash truck (54L-279) and one P-6 (64L-152) flight line patrol pickup type vehicle was all we had. Two weeks later another dilapidated O-11A (54L-6673) arrived. It was in bad shape with several items missing, perhaps stolen in transient.

I could just see the laughing faces of the fire chiefs who were instructed by PACAF Headquarters to ship these vehicles to U-Tapao. I’m sure their thoughts were “good riddance”.

In a few more days a newer 1500-gallon water tanker arrived which really helped the fire protection in the hooch area. Is it any wonder why at 36 years of age my black head of hair had suddenly turned white? No, it wasn’t the water.

Every building was considered temporary because they were constructed by what was known as the “Red Horse” special team.

This team was a separate unit and very self-sufficient. They even had their own area some distance from our cantonment area.

Specialists manned the unit: carpenters, plumbers, sanitation, water purification, electricians, roads and grounds, heavy equipment operators, vehicle mechanics, etc. These guys were the “elite” in setting up temporary bases. My hat went off to these folks.

Soon the base was bustling with the arrival of new troops, supplies, vehicles and additional personnel. Every available person was requested by the supply officer to assist in opening “War Readiness Kits” which were arriving daily, but ideally, they should have been received weeks earlier.

I remember opening up one fire protection kit and looking at “new” cotton fire hose covered with mold and mildew. Pressure testing of the hose showed it was unreliable for fire fighting. We later learned the kits had been located at CCK (Taiwan) in storage, but no telling how long.

My firemen opened another large crate containing winter type hooded animal fur lined jackets. It was one hundred degrees and for sure we didn’t need these. The supply officer was called to my location and all he could say was: “ Give everyone a jacket and forget about supply issue paperwork.” I still have my fur-hooded jacket.

MOTORS

A man goes to a party and has too much to drink. His friends plead with him to let them take him home.

He says no - he only lives a mile away.

About five blocks from the party the police pull him over for weaving all over the road, ask him to get out of the car and take the breathalyser test. Just as he is about to blow into the bag, the police radio informs the policemen of a robbery taking place in a house a short distance away.

The police tell the partygoer to remain where he is, they will be right back; and they run down the street to the robbery.

The guy waits and waits and finally decides to drive home. When he gets there, he tells his wife he is going to bed, and to tell anyone who might come looking for him that he has 'flu and has been in bed all day.

A few hours later the police knock on the door. They ask if Mr. X lives there and his wife says yes. They ask to see him and she replies that he is in bed with 'flu and has been there all day. However, the police have his driver's license. They ask to see his car, and she asks why. They insist on seeing his car, so she takes them to the garage and opens the door where they find the police car, lights still flashing.

Home Remedies for whitening teeth #1: Make a paste by mixing 2 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide & 2 teaspoons of baking soda. Place the mixture in a small bowl. The thickness of the paste should be consistent as toothpaste. For beter taste, add a bit of mint or a scoop of toothpaste.

Apply with a toothbrush and leave the mixture on your teeth for a couple of minutes. You should avoid swallowing the paste. If this happens, just drink lots of water. Use only once or twice a week.

Home Remedies for whitening teeth #2: Brush your teeth really well with regular tooth paste. Then pour some extra virgin olive oil on a white wash cloth and scrub your teeth for incredible results.

Home Remedies for whitening teeth #3: Make a paste of a few drops of lemon juice and a pinch of baking soda. Apply this to your teeth. Massage gently as if brushing. Helps remove the stains.

Home Remedies for whitening teeth #4: Rub your teeth with the inside of orange peels. They have a mild compound that has been shown to whiten teeth which removes stains from teeth without damaging the enamel.

IMPORTANT: While hydrogen peroxide is safe to gargle and to use as a home remedy to whitening teeth, do not swallow any of it as it poses a health hazard to the body. For pregnant women, any accidental swallowing of the whitening gel could be potentially harmful to the unborn fetus.

When using hydrogen peroxide, you may also experience gum irritation. This is perfectly normal and natural however you should avoid using it if you have any sores inside your mouth.

Tax Woes

Ambition in America is still rewarded . . . with high taxes.

Americans are now in a daze from intaxication.

There was a time when $1000.00 was the down-payment on a car; now it's the sales tax.

Drive carefully. Uncle Sam needs every taxpayer he can get.

There is no child so bad that he/she can't be used as an income tax deduction.

Congress does some strange things. it puts a high tax on liquor and then raises the other taxes that drive people to drink.

The attitude of Congress toward hidden taxes is not to do away with them, but to hide them better.

Nothing makes a person more modest about their income than to fill out a tax form.

I hate junk mail . . .and that includes the tax forms they send me.

About the time a man is cured of swearing, another income tax is due.

The income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf.

People who squawk about their income tax can be divided into two classes: men and women.

George Washington never told a lie, but then he never had to file a Form 1040.

When making out your income-tax report, be sure you don't overlook your most expensive dependent the government.

Some of us can recall the day when a person who had to pay income tax was considered to be wealthy.

We wouldn't mind paying income tax if we could know which country it's going to.

Making out your own income tax return is something like a do-it-yourself mugging.

We need to change our National Anthem to "Deep in the Heart of Taxes."

What this country needs most is a SPCTT - The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Taxpayers.

After all is said and done, the politicians say it and the taxpayers do it.

Unquestionably, there is progress every where. The average American now pays out as much in taxes as he formerly received in wages.

A man admitted he lied on his income-tax return - he listed himself as the head of the household!

Of course you can't take it with you, and with high taxes, lawyer's fees, and funeral expenses you can't leave it behind either.

A penny saved is a penny taxed.

Death and taxes are inevitable, but death doesn't repeat itself.

One can be born free and then be taxed to death.

Save your pennies and the sales tax will take care of them.

A Republican will consider every way of reducing taxes except cutting expenses.

The reward for saving your money is being able to pay your taxes without borrowing.

Last week, an Independent investigative panel released a scathing report on State Department security lapses that led to the deaths of four Americans at our diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Ater listing a number of instances of incompetence, wrong headedness and some might say dereliction of duty, the panel made no specific recommendations for punishment.

But that doesn’t mean there were no recriminations. No, sir, heads are rolling over this…or at least, nodding. Four State Department officials have now been removed from their posts over it. Oh, no, they weren’t fired. But they were “placed on administrative leave pending further action.” I’d tell you their names, but you’ve never heard of them. But they are highly-placed. One is an assistant secretary of state for diplomatic security, and two of them are deputy assistant secretaries.

Now we know why there are so many deputy assistant secretaries and assistant associate deputy secretaries in Washington: so that when the “buck stops here,” there’s always someone you’ve never heard of who ends up holding it. Former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee
