I was unaware of this. It could be very useful and certainly good to know for those with small kids.

BURNS a young man sprinkling his lawn and bushes with pesticides wanted to check the contents of the barrel to see how much pesticide remained in it. He raised the cover and lit his lighter; the vapors inflamed and engulfed him. He jumped from his truck, screaming. His neighbor came out of her house with a dozen eggs, yelling: "bring me some eggs!" She broke them, separating the whites from the yolks. The neighbor woman helped her to apply the whites on the young man's face. When the ambulance arrived and when the EMTs saw the young man, they asked who had done this. Everyone pointed to the lady in charge. They congratulated her and said: "You have saved his face." By the end of the summer, the young man brought the lady a bouquet of roses to thank her. His face was like a baby's skin. Healing Miracle for burns: Keep in mind this treatment of burns which is included in teaching beginner fireman this method. First aid consists to spraying cold water on the affected area until the heat is reduced and stops burning the layers of skin. Then, spread egg whites on the affected are. One woman burned a large part of her hand with boiling water. In spite of the pain, she ran cold faucet water on her hand, separated 2 egg white from the yolks, beat them slightly and dipped her hand in the solution. The whites then dried and formed a protective layer. She later learned that the egg white is a natural collagen and continued during at least one hour to apply layer upon layer of beaten egg white.

By afternoon she no longer felt any pain and the next day there was hardly a trace of the burn. 10 days later, no trace was left at all and her skin had regained its normal color. The burned area was totally regenerated thanks to the collagen in the egg whites, a placenta full of vitamins. This information could be helpful to everyone: Please pass it on.

Walking to town

Seems like I've always tried to follow in my sister Sandra's footsteps.

She was two years older than me, and when she was around 9 years old, and I was 7 we would walk to the “show” on Saturdays from Emory Gap. By the “show” I mean the Princess Theater.

We'd save our pennies, and when we had enough (10 cents each), we'd head out about 10 a.m., and walk on the then two-lane highway that ran right down the middle of the Gap. While she held my hand, we walked through South Harriman, then across the “new” bridge into Harriman. Of course, we'd have to stop middle ways of the bridge so we could lean over the side and spit in the river, and watch it slowly fall to the water.

We'd continue trodding on up the street until we could see the marquee which boostfully displayed what was showing.

Usually it was a monster movie and I still today have dreams about giant monsters coming over Walden's Ridge and destroying everything in it's path.

I depended on Sandra to get me there, hold my hand, and get me back home.

Over the years, this still held true.

She took me on my first or only trip to the Grand Canyon, Washington DC, Florida, Tunica, Chicago, and gosh, many more places I can't even remember at the moment.

Sandra died this past June. Life for many people will not be the same. No holiday, no vacation, no weekend trip, no family dinner or fundraiser will ever be the same.

Just like those days we walked to the Princess Theater, I followed in her footsteps while she held my hand. I'm so sad that she can't do that anymore.

We miss you so much Sandra.

As we journey through life, we often fail to tell others how much they really mean to us. This is especially true Temperatures - above average. with those we are closest to.

Precipitation - below average.

This may occur, because we are too busy or find it difficult to deal with emotional language. It may be that we feel Jan. 1-8.......Sunny, then snow showers, mild; others already know our feelings.

Jan. 9-12.....Sunny, cold; You may recall Reba McIntyre’s song about a young lady and her distant relationship with her father who had just Jan. 13-19...Snow north, showers south, then sunny, died. The song says, "He never told me he loved me; I guess he thought I knew." Unspoken love or admiration is mild; often never perceived.

Jan. 20-26...Snowstorm, then snow showers, seasonable; One week prior to his death at the First Battle of Bull Run, Major Sullivan Ballou wrote to his wife Sarah, "My Jan. 27-31...Snow showers, very cold. love for you is deathless. Harriman Library Has Colorful and Unique History

* Note: The historical information contained in the following article was provided by Jerry Lemons' play "A Little Temperance, Please" and by Walter Pulliam's book "Harriman: The Town That Temperance Built."

Almost from its beginning, Harriman has had a library. More than half of the founders, builders and settlers of Harriman were college-educated and liberal (in the classical sense) and they realized the importance of establishing and maintaining a library. As Mary Weatherford, who was responsible for forming the Harriman Public Library, stated in 1897: "Without a library, there is no city."

Harriman's first library was established about the same time as Harriman was incorporated as a city. The first library was set up in 1891 in the YMCA quarters on the second floor of 428 Roane Street. It had about four hundred books, and T.H. McMillan, the YMCA secretary, was Harriman's first librarian.

For a number of years, Harriman's library had no permanent location; it floated from place to place. But on July 16, 1897, thirty women, in response to a call in the Harriman Record from Mary Weatherford, met for the purpose of forming the Harriman Public Library. The group applied for a charter, and on January 8, 1898, it was issued a charter under the name Harriman Library Association. But it would be another twelve years before the library obtained a permanent location.

In 1908, Mrs. Rober Armstrong, president of the Harriman Library Association, discovered that the Andrew Carnegie Foundation provided funds for library construction. May 1, 1908 was designated "Library Day" in Harriman to kick off a library fund. A carnival was held and $300 was raised. Harriman city council adopted a resolution offering city funds to maintain the library. The Carnegie Foundation agreed to make a payment of $10,000 for the construction of a library building. Inez Ayers was employed as librarian, and a public library board was created with Robert Cassell as president.

The cornerstone ceremony was held on September 30, 1909. Thousands of people witnessed the laying of the cornerstone. The library building was opened for use on October 31, 1910. Robert Cassell stated the library board's policy: The library would not recognize politics, factions, or denominations, but be run for the good of all."

So, by 1910, Harriman had a permanent library building and about 10,000 volumes of books. But major problems were forthcoming. In 1911, the library developed financial problems with the city council which had deadlocked over the city budget. Inez Ayers, the librarian, was told that the library was empty and salaries could not be paid. The library came close to shutting down, but it managed to hang on until the city's financial problems were worked out.

During the Great Depression and World War II, interest in the library decreased further. It was kept alive mainly through the effort of S. Worthington Williams. He worked in the library, catalogued books, cared for the building and promoted the library when no one else seemed to care. He gave his resources, effort and time to the maintenance of the library.

During the 1960s and '70s, the library entered a modernization phase. Air conditioning, carpeting, draperies and fluorescent lighting were installed. New equipment such as index files and audiovisual and microfilm equipment was provided. Artists such as Ella Ballard, John Carpenter, Pansy Cross and Ralph Phillips contributed works to brighten up the library. The Harriman Garden Club landscaped the grounds with shrubs and flowers.

Today the Harriman Public Library is a historical landmark, being on the State Register of Historical Places, and it has over 20,000 volumes of books. But the Harriman Library is much more than a depository of books. It has a number of resources for research, genealogical and historical materials, census records, area newspapers, dozens of different magazines, a printing and photocopying machine, and income tax forms. Video and audio books are available for check-out, as well as large-print books, and information for the blind. Ten computers in the library with on-line hookup are available. The library is handicapped-accessible.

For one hundred twenty years Harriman has had a library, albeit for the first twenty years it floated from place to place. For more than one hundred years the library has had a permanent building, one that actually looks as a library should--both from the outside and inside. Harriman is fortunate to have such a library.

I never knew one word in the English language that can be a noun, verb, adj, adv, prep.

UP This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is ' UP .' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car.

At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. If you argue, you can kiss and make UP. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP , look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP , you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP . When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP . When it rains, it soaks UP the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP . One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP , for now . . . my time is UP !

Oh . . . one more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night?

U P! Did that one crack you UP ? Read this to a friend. . . or not . . . it's UP to you. Now I'll shut UP !

Rock stars – where are they now?

David Lee Roth's growl matched Eddie Van Halen's guitar chops when the band burst onto the rock scene with their 1978 hit, "Runnin' with the Devil," and the debut album "Van Halen." The long hair may be long gone, but "Diamond Dave" is still doing plenty. He had a short and controversial radio gig in 2006 before joining Van Halen for a reunion tour in 2007.

As one of the founding members of Motley Crue, drummer Tommy Lee first rose to rock star fame with the band's debut album "Too Fast For Love" in 1981, and his signature drum solos. Later, he married Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson, with whom he costarred in a much-discussed sex tape.

Following side projects like Methods of Mayhem and DJ gigs, Lee has given television a try. He has guest starred on "Californication" and voiced a character in "Family Guy." Meat Loaf became a household name early, thanks to his high notes. He also appeared in stage productions of "Hair" and "The Rocky Horror Show," which led to a role in the 1975 film.

For a rock star, the Grammy Award winner has had a lengthy film resume, appearing in movies including "Wayne's World," "Fight Club," and yes, even "Spiceworld: The Movie." Meat Loaf, released an album called "Hang Cool Teddy Bear" in 2009, and has announced plans for another release.

Ted Nugent was a blindingly fast guitar whiz back in 1970, with a teenage stint in the Amboy Dukes ("Journey to the Center of Your Mind") behind him and a long career ahead.

The Nuge can still wail on the guitar. The Detroit-born gun rights activist is just as handy with a bow and arrow on his Texas ranch.

Guns N' Roses lead guitarist Slash took the electric guitar to new levels, and was often seen on stage with a handmade Gibson Les Paul copy. The band hit No. 1 in 1988, with "Sweet Child o' Mine" and Slash's famous guitar riff and solo.

He was ranked by "TIME" in 2009 as the second best electric guitar player of all-time (behind Jimi Hendrix). Slash was also on the cover of the "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock" video game, which has the guitar player as a character in "battle mode."

Like the few lucky guitarists of the '80s, Richie Sambora was blessed with custom-made Les Paul models after bursting onto the rock scene with Bon Jovi's third release "Slippery When Wet." Sambora, and actress Heather Locklear divorced in 2006 after more than a decade of marriage. The rocker has been keeping busy with new interests, like a clothing line called White Trash Beautiful.

Prior to my discharge I started my search for employment opportunities once I left the service. I had a several contacts and upon completion of my resume’, copies were mailed to three national and well-known fire insurance companies. Replies were received in a timely manner and interviews were scheduled. Due to my extensive fire prevention experience each company offered me a position.

My main concern was location and I made it quite clear that I intended to settle around the Dayton, Ohio area. One offer was for the Chicago area and I turned that position down immediately. Another offer was in the vicinity of Columbus and I arranged to have an interview for that position. The interview was scheduled and off I went to Salem, Massachusetts. I was also interviewed for the third position from a company with headquarters in White Plains, New York. This company had a branch office in Phoenix and an interview was scheduled in my home.

Both interviews were successful and I had a real good feeling about job security once I was discharged from the air force. So at the end of July 1968 I bid farewell to folks at Davis-Monthan and off I went to Piqua, Ohio. I accepted a position with the company from White Plains and completed six weeks training at their home office. Once the training was completed I found that I could work out of my home. My territory was Kentucky and southern Ohio.

The job lasted a little over four years. In late November 1971 I was offered a job as Fire Chief at Davis-Monthan. The Fire Chief had decided to retire and suggested to the Base Civil Engineer that I be contacted and to see if I was interested in his job. I was contacted and gladly submitted necessary paperwork with the base civilian personnel office. To my surprise I was selected to fill the vacant position. It seemed that the Deputy Base Civil Engineer at Davis-Monthan remembered me from my service career and was familiar with my experience. After discussing the offer with my wife and daughters, we agreed that it was too good to turn down.

I later found out that Brigadier General Archie Mayes, Assistant Chief of Staff, Civil Engineering, for SAC Headquarters had put out the word for base civil engineers in SAC to consider hiring retired senior noncommissioned officers with fire firefighting experience to fill vacant Fire Chief positions. Thanks General Mayes !!

The Anglo-Saxons called the first month Wolfmonth because wolves came into the villages in winter in search of food.

Bible Trivia What is the Unpardonable Sin?

The only unpardonable sin is rejecting Jesus Christ as one's personal Savior. Isaiah 1:18 teaches that God will forgive the vilest sinner who repents. It was Jesus in Matthew 18:22 Who taught that we ought to forgive 7 times 70. In other words, unlimited forgiveness for those who seek it. Do you think God is less forgiving? 1st John 1:9 teaches that God is faithful and just to forgive us.

Although 1st John 1:9 is addressed to Christians, i.e., the Church; other Scriptures such as Romans 10:13 promise that WHO-SOEVER calls (i.e., appeals) unto the Lord Jesus for forgiveness shall be saved.

John 3:16 is the most precious Scripture in the Bible, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Amen!

There is no sin which God cannot, or will not forgive, except blaspheming the Spirit of God concerning Jesus Christ. If you reject Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, then you are fallen from God's grace and there is no other way to Heaven. That's exactly what Galatians 5:4 means when the Bible speaks of being “fallen from grace.” Acts 4:10-12 proclaims that there is no other name by which we can be saved than JESUS CHRIST. Jesus proclaimed this truth Himself in John 14:6. Jesus is precious!

Can you live for God Without Sinning?

No. Paul teaches in Romans 7:14-25 that he struggled with sin on a regular basis. The unsaved world has no regard for God nor His Word, so there is no struggle. They are children of the Devil. The best Christian still struggles with sin, but with God's help is able to overcome temptation (1st Corinthians 10:13). Yet, everyone falters at times because we are sinful by nature. Those who deny being sinners are liars and call God a liar (1st John 1:8,10). Sin is NEVER permissible; but the fact of the matter is that everyone is a sinner. No one can live above sin. Those who claim to do so are self-righteous hypocrites (Luke 18:10-14).

Household Hints  To make a general purpose cleaner, combine ½ c. baking soda and 1 tbsp. water to form a paste.  To Clean Wooden Furniture, Wash with warm water and Ivory soap, dry and rub with equal quantities of spirits of turpentine and sweet oil, wipe dry and rub with soft flannel cloth.  Washing Windows? Dip a lintless cloth in wood alcohol, go over the glass and follow with a piece of old silk cloth. This is fine for cold weather.  To unclog a drain, mix 1 c. baking soda, 1 c. salt and 1 c. white vinegar. (It will fizz) Let it sit for 15 minutes then pour down clogged drain. Pour in several cups of boiling water.  If you have bottles of perfume or cologne which you do not care for, don't throw them out. Try putting some in your bath water. The ratio of water to perfume will make for a nice smelling bath!  Lemon Juice will remove adhesive tape and gum from hands and clothes!  Need a good toilet bowl cleaner? Inexpensive, too? Get a bucket and add 2 quarts of water, 1 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1 tablespoon household ammonia. Mix well. Pour this entire mixture into the toilet and put the toilet lid down. Let the solution set for 30 minutes.

Open the lid, scrub with brush and flush! Easy and makes your toilet bowl sparkle!  For icy doorsteps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put Dawn dish washing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won't refreeze. (Wish I had known this for the last 60 years)!

Penny Pinchers  Do you use cookware with copper bottoms? Try this easy copper cleaner solution! Rub the copper with Worcestershire Sauce, let set for a minute and rinse off! You can also try rubbing with catsup.  Whenever purchasing soap pads, cut each pad into halves. No more throwing away whole rusted ones and the scissors get sharpened this way!  Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine.  To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.  Bathroom Odors: Place a shallow dish of baking soda behind the toilet to absorb bathroom odors.

Furniture Polish- Mix 2 tsp.  lemon oil and 1 pt. mineral oil in a spray bottle.

Oven Cleaning. To remove  grease from inside ovens and broilers, put small pan of ammonia in oven at night and close the oven door. In the morning, remove the pan of ammonia. The grease inside the oven will wipe off easily!

Flies or bees bothering you?  Spray them with hairspray and they will take a quick dive.

Candles will last a lot longer if  placed in the freezer for at least 2 hours prior to burning.

Wrap celery in aluminum foil  when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.

Place a slice of apple in hardened  brown sugar to soften.

Why didn't I think of that?

Overhaul your linen cupboard, store bed linen sets inside one of their own pillowcases and there will be no more hunting through piles for a match.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes HATTIE SHILLINGS

Videlia Onion Pie 1 sleeve Saltine or 1 cup Ritz crackers 2 Tbsp. oil 2 eggs 2 ½ cups Videlia onion. ¾ cup milk ¼ cup grated cheese Combine crumbs and butter. Press into an 8” pie pan. Bake 8 minutes at 350°. Cool. Sauté onions in oil until tender. Put into the pie shell. Mix eggs, milk, salt & pepper and pour over onions. Top with cheese and bake at 350° for 45 minutes. It freezes well if there are leftovers, just put the frozen slice into the oven at 350 for about 20 minutes or so. Enjoy.

Nacho Style Potatoes

1 ½ lb. potatoes 1 ½ Tbsp. Oil ½ tsp. garlic salt 1 tsp. Mexican seasoning blend ¼ can black beans, rinsed, drained ¼ Petit diced tomatoes ¼ cup green onions ¼ cup Chopped black olives 3 Tbsp. Canned diced green chiles Salsa, guacamole & sour cream Preheat oven to 425°. Scrub and cut potatoes into ½ inch thick wedges. Place potatoes into a medium size bowl with the oil, garlic salt and Mexican seasoning. Stir well to coat potatoes with oil and seasonings. Transfer to a large baking sheet with sides and spread into a single layer. Bake for 25-30 minutes, stirring several times, until crisp and golden brown. Top with cheese, beans, tomatoes, olives, onions and chillies. Bake for 5 minutes more to melt cheese.

Serve with salsa, guacamole and sour cream ,if desired.

Broccoli Stir Fry

1/4 c peanut or vegetable oil 2 lbs. bunch broccoli 1 Tbsp soy sauce 1/4 c water 1 can water chestnuts drained & sliced 1 c thinly sliced celery 1 Tbsp sesame seeds Trim outer leaves and tough ends from broccoli. Cut stalks and flowerets into 2" lengths, then slice thin, lengthwise. Heat oil in large wok or skillet; add broccoli and cook stirring constantly until broccoli turns a bright green. Add water and soy sauce. Stir in celery and water chestnuts. Heat to boiling, cover. Steam 5 minutes. While broccoli cooks, heat sesame seeds over low heat in small heavy skillet. Shake pan constantly, just until lightly toasted; stir into broccoli mixture. Place in bowl and serve with more soy sauce to sprinkle over top.

1. Speak English: You live in AMERICA. You manage an AMERICAN store. If you want me to spend my AMERICAN currency in your store, speak the AMERICAN language while I'm there or else my AMERICAN butt will not be back.

2. Don't bother me: Why do waiters and waitresses feel like they need to interrupt my meal by coming by my table every few minutes asking "Is everything ok?" "Do you need anything?" "Everything still ok?" It drives me crazy! If I need something I will let you know.

Leave me alone and let me enjoy my meal in peace.

3. Have a nice day: Don't tell me that after 5:00 p.m. My day is nearly over. It's too late to wish me a nice day. It's evening. You sound like a robot put on auto-pilot and I can tell by your flat monotone you don't really mean it anyway. If you did, you would say "Have a nice evening" or "Have a nice night."

4. Chewing gum: Do people who sit on committees such as city councils, county commissions, school boards, etc. ever see themselves on TV? (such as BBB TV replays of their meetings). Quit chewing gum for Heaven's sake! I counted 6 at one meeting the other night! You sit there slapping your jaws together looking like a cow chewing it's cud. Throw the stuff in the trash can before you sit down.

Very unprofessional.

5. Being late: Do you really think your time is more valuable than mine? Do you really think I have nothing better to do than sit and wait on you? When we have set a time to meet, be there at the time we have set, not 10-20-30 minutes later! Being late is rude, inconsiderate, disrespectful, and inexcusable.

1. Never pass up the chance of throwing a coin into a wishing well.

2. Never get yourself into a position where you have to back up a trailer.

3. When you're the first one up, be quite about it.

4. Always mail your Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes notice. Who knows?

5. Never miss an opportunity to go fishing with your father.

6. No matter how old you or your child are, hold hands when you cross a street.

7. Never deny anyone the opportunity to do something nice for you.

8. Always offer to leave the tip when someone invites you out to eat.

9. Pull your car over and stop when a funeral procession is passing by and whisper a prayer of comfort for the family.

10. Be the first adult to jump into the pool or run into the ocean with the kids.

They will love you for it.

I've learned.... That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I've learned.... That when you're in love, it shows.

I've learned.... That just one person saying to me, 'You've made my day!' makes my day.

I've learned.... That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being right.

I've learned.... That you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I've learned.... That I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way.

I've learned.... That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I've learned.... That simple walks with my father on a summer night when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations."

She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

1. Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over..

So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

2. We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

3. Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

4. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana . In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

5. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.

And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

The weather had turned cold and Glander had moved from outside to inside. He was sprawled back in his Lazy Boy recliner looking through the window of the station at Merlin and Solomon who were working hard at the gas pumps. I sat and sipped coffee and listened as Glander came out with his Presidential platform planks.

"I gotta whole bunch of planks--maybe a dozen," Glander said, " but I got three 'at's the most important.

They're the ones I would, whatyemaycallit, implement as soon as I got sworn in. Number one is border security. We got to start protectin' our borders. Now I got a plan 'at I've give a great deal of thought to, and I come up with the cunclusion that the way to protect the borders is a combonation of National Guard and military troops. We got the National Guard in ever' state in the union, plus we got all these forts all over the country, where the GIs get their basic trainin' and a good deal of troops comin' home are based.

As part of their basic trainin', the new GIs could patrol parts of the border--ditto for the troops who have just a few months left in the service. The National Guard's a different matter, as they only have two weeks in the summer where they go out in the field. Take each state's National Guard and rotate the units on the border of their state--year 'round. Now that's my number one plank. My second plank is to reduce spendin' all across the board. Ever' govuhmunt agency, department, and program would be cut five percent-no exceptions. All guvunmunt spendin' would be cut. Along with doin' away with all govuhmunt, whatyemaycallit, subsidies. I'd cut all subsidies--every last one of 'em."

"That's a mighty ambitious program," I said. "You do know that the President can't just come into office and start implementing all those things. Congress would have to be involved and it would have to end up approving and passing them."

"Oh, I know that," Glander replied. "But that's where my powers of persuasion would come in. I can be mighty persuasive when I wanna be. I could persuade any, whatyemaycallit, dissenting members of Congress to go along with me. And that comes to my third plank: lowering taxes. Now when my second plank is implemented, that's gonna cause a big excess in the money that the govuhmunt has. What d'you do with all that money? You pay off the debt of the country and erase the deficit. Then you lower taxes.

And you don't just lower taxes on some--you lower taxes on ever'body. It just ain't fair to lower taxes on some groups and keep 'em high on others. That ain't the Americun way. The Americun way is to be fair to ever'body. I don't care if a person is a billionaire or makes $20,000 a year. Taxes should be lowered for ever'body."

About this time Merlin came bopping into the station and headed for the coffee machine. "Whew, it's cold as a witch's wit out there," he said. "Hehehe--witch's wit, witch's--" "We get it," Glander interrupted him.

Merlin poured a paper cup of coffee and came over close and stood there looking at us. "Whatche all doin'?" he asked.

"We're workin' out my campaign strategy," Glander replied. "Why don't you get a cup of coffee for Solomon too."

Merlin poured another cup, and on his way out Glander said "Here, take these streamers and lights and flags and put 'em up around the sign."

Merlin grabbed the streamers and flags and laid them on his shoulders, got the cups of coffee and headed out. With all the colorful streamers and flags on his shoulders streaming down and around, he looked like a walking Christmas tree.

Glander looked out the window and nodded his head in satisfaction. "Yap, things are lookin' up." to be continued....

Rockwood Memories

By RAY COLLETT Have you ever thought about how many nicknames the people in Rockwood had? I think everyone had a nickname. The other night, instead of counting sheep, I started counting them. Let's see how many you remember from our younger days in the 1940's, '50s. I am sure that I will leave a few out, but these are the ones that I remember .

I am going to start with my next door neighbor growing up. "Dody" Monday, he had a brother, Charles,"Head" Monday. And when you think about that,"Heads", up pops "Flat Head" Reed, "Simmon Head" Ivey, "EggHead" Treadway, and a couple of "Jugheads", Larry Eaton and Bobby Hembree.

And to go along with these heads, how about some hair. We had "Mollyhair" Knight, "Gag Hair" Nelson, and "Curley" Johnson, "Fuzzy" Lawson, "Slick" McNelly, and how about this one, "PruneFace" Pierce.

Animal names were certainly a favorite too. Let's see how many come to mind. There was "Monk" Stamey, "Monk " Thompson, "Monkey" Green, "Coon" Doughty , "Momma Bear" Plemons, "Squirrel" Allen, "Frog" Reed, "Sowbelly" Walker, "Hoss" Foust, "Chicken" Hinds, "Chick" East, "Rabbit" Gibson, "Sardine" Payne, "Bulldog" Gardner, "Dog Ears" Rose, "Dog Eye" Teasley , "Rattler Boles", and "Duck" Wicks.

Sometimes, most of the kids in a family had a nickname, such as "Mop", "Red" and "Cotton" Mitchell. Most of us at Clymersville had one, among them were "Sonny" Collett, "Speck" Warner, "Toe" Warner, "Reno" Warner, "Slim" Copley, "Tunk" Tankersley, "Buck", "Greedy" and "Stuff" Collett, "Brother" Carmichael, "Stalk" Stout, "Flick" Cates, "Dude' and "Dooley" Warner, "Paddles" Wilkey, "Runt" Wilkey, "Sub" Boles, and the Cofers, "Jake, "Oodler, ""Goo" and "Speedy".

There were others found in Rockwood also, among them were "Bones" Heydel, "Coalfield" Taylor, "Red" Norton, "Peabody Ledford, "Crip" Carroll, "Pud" Monger, "Shorty" Mee, "Little Bit" Mitchell, "Pancho" Bannorra, "Trick Knee" Hall, "Pinball" Ridenour, "Notchey" Barnard, "Dink" Billings, "Butch" Evans, "Bunk" Evans, and "Butch" Greene.

Seems as if one name leads to another one. More are coming to mind. How about these.

"Smokey" Kirk, "Babe" Mills, "Cedar" Mee, "Dude" Bane, "Hot Dog" Long, "Hump" Ezell, "Whistler" Golliher, "Big Bill" Beard , "Foot Log" Kirby, "Shot" Collett and "Shot" Vincent.

I just thought of a few more, "Putt" Smith, "Dub" Roberts, "Heavy" Powell, "BlueBoy" Wicks, and who could forget "Jazz Baby" Carney.

Others coming to mind are "Steam Boat" Fritts, "Streetcar" Smith, "Buddy" Hickey, "Copper Bacon", Rusty" Jiles, "Mac" and "Bo" McCulley, "Sleepy" Reed, and "Sleepy" Fugate, "Hap" Collett, "Doc" Edwards, "Kotchie" Brown, "PeeWee" Anderson, Jim "Speedy" Spurling and "Cotton" Huff.

Just when I thought I had thought of them all, more started to come to mind. Here they are, "PeeWee" Anderson, "Corkey" Burdette, "Punk" Miller, "Red" and "Cork" Collett, "Wimp" Winters, "Stumpy" Rogers, "Nubbingberry" Owens, "Bug" and "Jeep" Wright, Sanny "Leeper" Bowman, "Tub" Billings, "Lulu" Butler, "Moe" Greene, and "Moe" Riddle, "Sonny" Holland, "Canker" Lawrence, "Chippy" Luttrell, Jimmy "Crack" McNelly, "Booger" Jones, and "Booger Bane, David "Cess" Poole, "Zeke" Davis and "Zeke" Cooper.

It is funny how all of these nicknames came about. Neither of my sons, grandchildren or any of their friends had them, except maybe just using their initials. We had our share of that in Rockwood, too. Nicknames do have a way of sticking with you, I guess as many people call me "Sonny" as they do Ray. Funny thing about it though is when the phone rings, I don't know how to answer it, Ray or "Sonny". If it is a telemarketer, I tell them that I am Wayne Pugh and send me a dozen of whatever they are selling. Just kidding Wayne, those guys have to make a living too.

STROKE:

Remember the 1st Three Letters... S. T. R. STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within three hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: *Ask the individual to SMILE. *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently. I.e.

It is sunny out today?) *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

Experience Gravity Free Water What goes up must come down right? Well try bending the rules with a cup of water that stays inside the glass when held upside down. You'll need the help of cardboard and a little air pressure.

What you'll need: A glass filled right to the top with water A piece of cardboard Put the cardboard over the mouth of the glass, making sure that no air bubbles enter the glass as you hold onto the cardboard. Turn the glass upside down (over a sink or outside until you get good). Take away your hand holding the cardboard.

What's happening?

If all goes to plan then the cardboard and water should stay put. Even though the cup of water is upside down the water stays in place, defying gravity! So why is this happening? With no air inside the glass, the air pressure from outside the glass is greater than the pressure of the water inside the glass. The extra air pressure manages to hold the cardboard in place, keeping you dry and your water where it should be, inside the glass.

Inflation is Theft of Your Bank Account’s Dale Earnhardt Buying Power!

What signifies the end of the world's current monetary system?

1) The collapse of the developed world's sovereign borrowers 2) The demise of most of the triple-A-rated corporations in America 3) The destruction of the U.S. consumer's balance sheet Today, 60% or more of the world's banking reserves are U.S. dollars.

When governments have to bail out their banks (not if), they're going to need U.S. dollars to do it. And they're going to need to print massive quantities of electronic dollars.

These needed dollars won't come in the form of legitimate credits for the following reasons • The U.S. Government is Broke • The U.S. Consumer is in Debt and Demoralized

Where will the needed new money come from?

• The printing press. The Fed will bail out Europe… Over the next few months, the Federal Reserve will open huge new "swap" lines with its European counterpart, the ECB. And the Fed will begin buying massive quantities of questionable European assets. Similar to when it bailed out Bear Stearns, the Fed will swear it is only lending against high-quality collateral... But it won't let anyone else inspect its books.

This is how paper money systems fail.

• They don't fail because people hoard dollars.

• They don't fail because there's too much confidence in paper money.

They fail because, inevitably, far too much credit is created under the paper money system. There's no fundamental limit to credit. Sooner or later, people realize the debts can't be carried, much less repaid. At that point, the system collapses without warning– and not because the money becomes more valuable (i.e. deflation).

It collapses because people suddenly decide any other asset is better to hold than the paper money the bank. No one can tell you exactly when, that moment will hit. But you can count on it with 100% certainty it is going to happen. How can we be so sure?

Just look at the size of the debts that must be monetized. What we've seen so far is just a small sample of the problems we will face when that moment arrives.

What you must do to protect your life’s savings before it is too late?

Look into a high paying guaranteed absolute return plan in the 6% to 7% range. One that offers an inflation hedge. Be sure to have a guaranteed illustration printed by a proven entity. One that has a history of protecting your money in the worst of times.

Make sure to keep part of your savings in gold. Gold will become the new standard of international exchange (again) at some point in the next few years.

Don’t be caught foolishly sitting with low to no interest rate bank accounts and money markets… You will be eaten alive!

The Magic of the Princess Theater

*note: The following article was written by me in 1993 while the Princess was still in operation. But given that the Princess has been restored and will soon re-open, it seemed fitting to print this article once again.

There aren't many of them left: the old-time movie theaters, ornate and adorned, yet muted and intimate, with a stage and staircases leading up to a balcony.

Most movie theaters today are sleek, plastic, sterile affairs, located in shopping malls, totally lacking style, grace, atmosphere--and a stage and balcony. They are completely contemporary, possessing no history, no past, no magic.

No, there aren't many of those cinema palaces remaining, and the day may come when there aren't any left. But until that comes, there is the Princess Theater.

For as long as I can remember, I've had a love affair with the Princess. That love affair began in the 1950s, when I was just a little kid. Once a week, on Saturdays, I would make a trip to Harriman and go to the Princess. I would enter that majestic building, and it was as if I had entered another world, a world of fantasies and dreams. I would sit in a soft-cushioned seat with a bag of popcorn tucked between my knees and a Coke in my hand, look up at big wide screen, and for a few hours I would be transported; I would look through a window upon a magical world.

It has changed but little.

Although I no longer make weekly trips to the movies, when I do go to the Princess I have just about the same feeling I had as a little kid.

That's because the Princess Theater is a place of magic, a "field of dreams," a very special, wonderful and unique place. In the whole of Roane County there is only one real magical place--and that is the Princess.

As it is, the Princess Theater is registered with the state as a historical landmark, and well it should be, for it is one of the few old-time movie theaters still operating.

The origin of the first Princess is shrouded in a kind of mystery. There are different accounts of when a movie theater first opened on the site of the present day Princess.

According to Cecil Johnson, present manager of the Princess, "The first Princess Theater burned in 1938 or '39, and it was rebuilt on the same location. I don't know how long the theater was there before it burned."

According to Mr. Johnson, "There haven't been any major changes in the Princess Theater itself; the changes have been in the movies made and the number of movie theaters in Roane County. The Princess is the only one left, and even though it's the only theater left in the county, we haven't raised our ticket prices in ten years."

When I asked Mr. Johnson if he could foresee a time when there wouldn't be any movie theaters, he answered "No. People will always want to get out, go to a theater and watch a film."

That's probably true, and movie theaters will most likely continue to operate. But I wonder...

Will all those theaters be sleek, sterile, lacking in style, grace, atmosphere, possessing no history, no past, no magic? Will the day come when there aren't any old-time movie theaters--the kind that are ornate and adorned, yet muted and intimate, with a stage and staircases leading up to a balcony?

Probably so.

But until that time comes, there is a place of magic in Roane County, a field of dreams. There is the Princess Theater.
