This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all! And you are one of them! Congratulations! Please pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

Ash Wednesday History Ash Wednesday is mainly a Catholic observance in which ashes is marked on the forehead of parishioners in the shape of a cross. The ashes are meant as a reminder of our mortality and sinfulness. It marks the beginning of Lent, a 40 day period (excluding Sundays) that ends with Easter. This is a solemn period observed by prayer, repentance, fasting, and moderation. Sundays are excluded as they are considered a celebratory day that represents the resurrection of Jesus and the Sabbath day of rest.
Facts about Ash Wednesday • Ashes to ashes, dust to dust is a phrase commonly recited during Ash Wednesday services. It is meant to remind us of our mortality in that we began as dust and our bodies will ultimately return to dust after our death. This phrase originates from Genesis 3:19: ...for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. • Ashes symbolize the dust that we eventually become after our death. This is a reminder us of our mortality and that our time on earth is limited. • The day before Ash Wednesday is Marti Gras. As this is the last day before the start of Lent, it is often accompanied by partying and celebrations. The idea being that it is the last day to indulge before the Lenten period of moderation and repentance. • Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation. It is not explicitly in the Bible, however the Bible does record accounts of people in the Old Testament using dust and ashes as symbols and repentance or mourning (Source: Daniel 9:3, Esther 4:1, Job 2:8, 2 Samuel 13:19).
Getting too Much Sleep? Not getting enough sleep (at least 7 hours) has been linked with an increased risk of certain diseases, weight gain, and depression. It is very important to our health, but getting too much sleep can have adverse effects as well. Too much sleep can result in an increased risk of chronic diseases, including America's No. 1 killer, heart disease. While most people don't get enough sleep, there are plenty who get too much. Limit your sleep to nine hours for best health results.

Finding Jesus A drunk stumbles along a baptismal service on Sunday afternoon down by the river. He proceeds to walk down into the water and stand next to the Preacher. The minister turns and notices the old drunk and says, “Mister, Are you ready to find Jesus?” The drunk looks back and says, “Yes,Preacher. I sure am.” The minister then dunks the fellow under the water and pulls him right back up. “Have you found Jesus?” the preacher asked. “No, I didn’t!” said the drunk. The preacher then dunks him under for quite a bit longer, brings him up and says, “Now, brother, have you found Jesus?” “No, I did not Reverend.” The preacher in disgust holds the man under for at least 30 seconds this time brings him out of the water and says in a harsh tone, “My God, have you found Jesus yet?” The old drunk wipes his eyes and says to the preacher…”Are you sure this is where he fell in?”

Why I still Wear a Tie to Church In an age when shorts, sweatpants, and bare midriff (sometimes all at the same time) are considered acceptable attire for most churches, I stand out like a wooly mammoth. In this day of extreme casual, more and more men are throwing away their ties when they go to church. Like some newly awakened Rip Van Winkle, I still wear mine. I thought I would tell you why. Nothing in the nature of a necktie either compels us to wear it or condemns it—though some have tried to connect it to an evil beginning. Those who use it practice the tradition of giving honor to our Lord by dressing up a bit when they go to meet with His people to worship Him. So I ask: Is this practice encouraged or discouraged in scripture? In the parable told by Christ in Matthew 22:11-12, the king expected each of his guests to come with the proper “wedding garment.” Not to do so was to show disrespect for the king and for the occasion. In like manner, our forefathers felt it important to come to church with clothing that showed proper respect to the Lord and to the occasion. In different times and places, that proper respect was shown in different ways. But it was shown. Even the Saturday night bath was established for the purpose of being physically clean and properly trim on the Lord’s Day. Today we swerve boldly in the other direction. We energetically oppose dressing especially for church. Many even consider it hypocritical to do so. We should come as we are and avoid any pretense. But do the dress patterns of today prove that we have a greater sincerity and are more genuine than our predecessors? I think not. The slouchy dress that we see in worship services directly corresponds to our flippant attitude toward meeting with our Maker and Saviour. We have lost our respect for the spiritual dimension of God meeting with His people. Now, we want to dress like we would at a backyard barbecue. God is everywhere. Why approach His house with any more formality than we would enter the neighborhood grocery store? The key word for today is comfort. “Why shouldn’t I feel comfortable? After all, my comfort is the main thing. I’m not going to go out of my way for anyone–even God.” We exult in our come-as-you-are philosophy. Our services have become user-friendly for everyone except God. More and more, He seems to be left out in the cold. O how we love ourselves unto death! The Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes may be a tradition that is quickly fading away. But it was a good tradition and one whose parting is just another sign of the times–the last times. Where is our sense of awe in the presence of God? He says He dwells in the midst of us when we meet with Him (Matthew 18:20). The church is the people, not the building. When the people of the church meet, they become the “house of God” (1Timothy 3:15); they become His dwelling place. What a special privilege to enter into this presence! Psalm 96:8-9 “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts. O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.” When I meet with the congregation of the Lord, I count it not a burden, but an honor to give extra pains in preparation, in physical cleanliness, and in dressing up. I count it a privilege to wear my Sunday best. Any discomfort I may feel from a tie about my neck, from a coat about my body, or from clothes too good for playing kickball is offset by the solemnity and wonder of the occasion. It is seldom that we in America get to suffer anything for the Saviour who suffered so much for us. The least I can do (and I mean the least) is to honor Him by dressing more formally when I come to His church than I do for other events. Certainly, I can suffer a necktie for Him.

All those wishing to do something on the new carpet will come forward and get a piece of paper.

Top 5 worst cities for retirement
No. 5: Newark, New Jersey Newark bustles with cultural and entertainment activities, such as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Prudential Center, Newark Symphony Hall and Newark Museum. Halsey Village is the heart of the city's thriving art scene, and foodies can fill their tummies at Restaurant Row at Edison Place. The best part for retirees is much of it can be seen on foot, because Newark is the seventh-most walkable city in Bankrate's ranking, according to data from WalkScore.com. The city is also located in a state with a decent health care system. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality notes New Jersey's low level of hospitalizations for the flu among seniors, low stays at nursing homes for moderate to severe pain, and high instances of improved mobility among adult home care patients. But, like many Northeastern cities, Newark is a pain for the piggy bank. It is located in the second-highest tax-burdened state, ranking behind New York, according to the Tax Foundation. The average apartment rent is $1,527 per month, or two-thirds higher than the national average. Newark home prices are 62 percent higher than average. And it's not just the big stuff, either. Senior residents will pay almost $3 more for a haircut, $1.85 more for a movie and 68 cents more for a six-pack of beer. No. 4: Buffalo (and surrounding area), New York The city once known as the "Gateway to the West" on the Erie Canal has redeveloped its waterfront and features a host of historic, cultural and entertainment offerings within walking distance, its best feature for retirees. Buffalo is somewhat walkable, somewhat bike-friendly and has good public transit, according to WalkScore.com. Seniors can see seven structures designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, visit where President Roosevelt was inaugurated and take a car ride to Niagara Falls. Despite the attractions, senior residents have to deal with high taxes because New York has the worst tax burden in the country, according to the Tax Foundation. They also have to worry about high crime. Violent crimes in the city were more than three times the national average, according to FBI figures from 2013. Property crimes were also higher than average. Seniors also need to bundle up and get ready to shovel during the winter. Nearly 6 feet of snow falls every year in the city, and normal temperatures hold below freezing from December through February. That helps to drive up total average energy costs to $181.88, or 7 percent higher than the average of 308 U.S. cities. However, general living costs are more favorable. Nearby cities Niagara Falls and Cheektowaga also rank near the bottom of our list. No. 3: New Haven (and surrounding area), Connecticut The second-largest city in Connecticut offers residents a tangible connection with the past. The historic downtown still includes the original nine squares laid in 1638. Then there is Yale University, which was founded in 1701. But retirees will have to shell out more money on everyday items from Coke to toothpaste, along with bigger bucks on rent and buying a home, according to the CREC. They will also have to contend with higher taxes -- the state ranks third-highest in state-local tax burden as a share of income, at 11.9 percent versus the U.S. average of 9.8 percent, according to the Tax Foundation. New Haven also is home to a relatively high crime rate. The incidence of violent crimes in the city is more than triple the national average, according to the FBI. The New Haven-Milford area also received the lowest score by Healthways for well-being among seniors. The Healthways score is tied to the amount of community pride, personal satisfaction, happiness and other factors that people who were 65 and older noted in its surveys. No. 2: Little Rock, Arkansas Little Rock is one of the more affordable cities in the U.S. Retirees heading to the Arkansas capital can expect relatively cheap housing. An apartment rents for an average of $777 a month, 15 less percent less than the national average. But the health care system has a lot of problems. The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality ranks the state as the sixth worst in terms of health care quality. The agency noted, for example, that Arkansas recorded too many avoidable hospital admissions for angina, chronic obstructive lung disease, asthma and hypertension. Too many residents who needed to see a doctor could not because of cost in the past year. It also found that the number of long-stay nursing home residents in restraints was higher than average. Little Rock also experiences high crime. The rate of violent and property crimes was triple the national average, according to 2013 figures from the FBI. The strain of living in a high-crime area and having a poor health care system may have been reflected in surveys of the 65-plus population in the area. Healthways gives Little Rock and the surrounding areas of North Little Rock and Conway its second-lowest well-being score, ranking it 104th out of 105 metro areas. No. 1: New York City Frank Sinatra sang that if he could make it here, he could make it anywhere. But he didn't mention how much cash you would need, especially if you plan to retire in the Big Apple. The cost of living catapults the city to the No. 1 worst place to retire. The average rent in Manhattan is $3,851 a month, more than four times the U.S. average. The average home price is nearly four and a half times the U.S. mean at $1.36 million. The smaller stuff is pricey, too. You'll spend $8.05 more for a haircut, $4.04 more for a movie and $3.69 more for a six-pack of beer. On top of that, New York state has the highest state-local tax burden in the nation at 12.6 percent. Despite its toll on your wallet, New York City is the best place to get around without a car. WalkScore.com ranked it as the most walkable U.S. city, along with having the best public transit. So, it's easy to see the first-class sites the city offers, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Broadway to Madison Square Garden. But make sure to get a senior discount. You'll need it.

The most dangerous cities in Tennessee We all watch the news and see the Facebook feeds come across of the latest crimes that are happening in our home towns. While a major crime just blocks away from your house can make you feel really uneasy, in the big picture, most likely, where you live is relatively safe. If your new shoes are to tight put the nozzle of your blow dryer into shoe and turn on low. When shoe gets warm, stuff with paper or socks to stretch it. In a medium bowl, blend the taco seasoning mix and refried beans. Spread the mixture onto a large Spray wd40 on a cloth and wipe over leather shoes or leather boots , serving platter. Mix the sour cream and cream cheese in a medium bowl. Spread over the refried beans. then buff with a soft clean cloth to shine and make them waterproof. 3Top the layers with salsa. Place a layer of tomato, green bell pepper, green onions and lettuce over the salsa, and top with Cheddar cheese. Garnish with black olives To make nail polish stay on nails longer first coat fingernails with white vinegar using a cotton ball. Let dry then apply nail polish. To Restaurant-Style Buffalo Chicken Wings quickly dry nail polish dip fingers into a bowl of cold water. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Slowly cook and stir the onion until tender. Mix in the garlic, jalapeño, green chile peppers, cumin, oregano and cayenne. Continue to cook and stir the mixture until tender, about 3 minutes. Mix in the chicken broth, chicken and white beans. Simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

If you must microwave water, stick a stirrer or something in it so it can boil as usual. Bread If you put bread in a microwave you won’t end up with a ruined microwave, just a ruined piece of bread. After more than 10 or so seconds in a microwave, enough moisture leaves the bread to make it a hard, stale, chewy mess. The best way to bring back stale bread is to stick it in the oven for a few minutes. Plastic Some plastic is microwave-safe, but it’s always labeled accordingly if it is. If it isn’t, it will melt inside you microwave, making for a nearly-impossible cleanup. Sponges There’s a rumor going around that if you microwave a sponge for 30 or so seconds you’ll kill off all the bacteria on it. Not only is this untrue, it’s just a bad idea. All you’ll end up with is a hot sponge and a kitchen that smells awful. Sponges are cheap; just buy a new one.

Penny Pinchers Combine 2 parts of sweet oil (which is olive oil you buy at the pharmacy) and one-part apple cider vinegar. Put into a spray bottle and label. This is just perfect for most finished wood, but DON’T use on raw or unfinished wood. Just shake it up to mix. Spray a little on a soft cloth and polish away! To get rid of roaches, make this mixture: half boric acid powder and half sugar or cornmeal or flour. Put in lids or small containers and place in the areas where you see roaches. They will track it back to their nests and eventually they will die. Keep away from pets and small children. Make your own special bath treat by combing 3 cups of Epsom salt, 1 tablespoon of glycerin, a bit of your favorite perfume or essential oils, such as peppermint, bergamot, rose or lavender, in a glass or metal bowl (you can add a few drops of food coloring, if you want). Put 1/2 cup or more of the mixture into the hot bath. Store the rest in an attractive apothecary jar with a latch. Wrap cheese chunks in aluminum foil and store in the fridge to keep your cheddar fresher for longer and to keep mold out. Pull bananas apart before displaying them in your fruit bowl. If you leave them connected at the stem, they’ll ripen faster and go brown quicker. To reheat a pizza so that the base is out-of-the-oven crisp, heat your leftover slices in a fry pan on low-medium heat on the stove until warm and wave goodbye to the days of soggy microwave pizza. Instead of throwing out used coffee grounds, leave half in the filter, then add half of the freshly ground coffee for a second pot. When the mayonnaise jar is almost empty and you just can't get that last little bit, sprinkle a few drops of vinegar inside, add flavorful herbs and shake well. You'll have enough salad dressing for one salad. Stock up on cheap white paper plates — they have many uses and are less wasteful than wads of paper towels. After you take a dying battery out of a camera, try reusing it in a low-energy appliance — an alarm, wall clock, or remote control for example. (But never mix old batteries with new ones.) Better yet, invest in rechargeable batteries. Instead of facial tissues, use toilet paper, which costs less. Remove the cardboard core from a roll and throw away. Then place the roll inside an empty square tissue box and pull from the center of the roll through the opening. Acetone nail polish remover will revive an old marker pen when it gets dried up. Just dip the tip part in the acetone. Recap. Can use it again to write, draw, or color with in a couple hours.

In this category, Cheesecake Factory scored high marks in food quality, healthy food choices and menu variety, but it fell just short of being named America's favorite general menu chain. That honor went to Cracker Barrel. Cracker Barrel led in three key areas of Market Force's study: value, friendly service and fast service. The two restaurants were well-matched in all categories except for one: value. Cracker Barrel received a rating of 48 percent, while Cheesecake Factory was rated at 31 percent in this category.

This is Maggiano's second year in a row at the top of the loyalty list. The restaurant led in every key attribute that Market Force tabulates except for one. It scored high in value, quality, menu variety and addressing allergens, among others. Carrabba's bested Maggiano's in the friendly service category.

Texas Roadhouse narrowly beat Longhorn Steakhouse for the number one spot on Market Force's Composite Loyalty index, with a ranking of 63 percent. Longhorn garnered a 59 percent score, while Outback Steakhouse trailed with 51 percent. Brands like The Capital Grille and The Keg fell from the list this year.

Bob Evans, known for its "breakfast served all day" theme and sausage products, overtook Mimi's Cafe for the top spot on Market Force's breakfast chain list. It May Not Be as Healthy As You Thought Juice
Juice cleanses have become all the rage as of late. Many people find it much easier to get the daily recommended fruit and vegetable serving by drinking it in liquid form. But whole fruits and vegetables are healthy in part because of their fiber and skin, which is eliminated when juicing. Consuming large amounts of juice can spike a blood sugar since the fiber has been eliminated. Additionally, fresh made juice doesn't assist the body in cleansing. Our organs efficiently remove toxins that juices can't. When it comes to juice, limit yourself to 4 ounces or less.
Canned Tuna
Tuna is one of the best proteins you can eat since it is packed with the healthiest type of fat, Omega 3 fatty acids. But, too much tuna can result in dangerous levels of mercury. Excessive mercury intake can lead to vision problems, impaired hearing and speech, lack of coordination, and muscle weakness. Make sure you don't consume more than three to five cans of tuna a week, or try swapping out tuna for lower-mercury fish like salmon, shrimp.
Water
We've heard time and time again how important daily water intake is. But did you ever think you could drink too much water? Though rare, excessive water consumption can actually cause water intoxication. This occurs when too much water intake dilutes the sodium in the body, and low blood sodium levels can result in impaired brain functions or even death. But just because this is possible, doesn't mean it's likely if you start forcing yourself to drink more water. Water is critical to all body functions and most of don't drink enough. As a general rule of thumb eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day is a good place to start, but keep in mind that recommendation changes depending on your size and weight, and also on your activity level and where you live. Over-hydration has been documented during water drinking contests and can be a problem for ultra-marathoners who force themselves to over-drink. But to make sure you're not consuming too much water, check your urine: If it's always transparent, reduce your intake.

Kayden Christopher is 6 months old. He lives in Harriman and is the Grandson of Kay & Larry Christopher. Kay is the Co-owner of The Roane Reader. His mom and dad are Matthew Christopher and Angelia Mayo. We found out 2 weeks ago that Kayden is blind. But, even worse news came when we learned that he lost his sight due to a large tumor deep in his brain. The tumor has branched out, making surgery impossible. The best surgeons around have agreed that he will not survive the mass that’s growing in his brain. All we can do is ask you to pray that God chooses to intervene and cures him. He is currently at Children’s Hospital and will undergo chemo in the next few weeks. Kayden is such a good and happy baby. Please remember him when you say your prayers, and add him to your prayer lists at church. Thank you.

Things you shouldn’t do when you’re angry
You Shouldn't Drive Operating a motor vehicle when you're enraged can be dangerous. Research shows that angry drivers take more risks and have more accidents. When you're angry, you're primed for attack, so it's not a good time to jump in a vehicle. In addition, anger gives a person tunnel vision—you stare straight ahead and may not see a pedestrian or another car coming into your peripheral vision crossing the street. If you must drive when angry, open your eyes purposefully and look around you to avoid tunnel vision. You Shouldn't Vent Getting anger off your chest sounds like a good idea, but it may actually make matters worse. In fact, people who simply spent five minutes reading another person's online rants became angrier and less happy in a study published in the journal 'Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking.' An earlier study also showed that venting anger by hitting pillows not only increased anger at that moment but made aggressive behavior more likely in the future. You Shouldn't Eat Soothing your anger by reaching for food can backfire in a couple of ways. When we are angry, we often make unhealthy food choices. No one ever reaches for broccoli. We go for the high-sugar, high-fat, carbohydrate-loaded comfort foods. In addition, a heightened state of emotions sparks the fight or flight response, where the body thinks it's in danger. In such a state, digestion takes a backseat to the "emergency" at hand and does not function optimally. This may result in diarrhea or constipation. You Shouldn't Keep Arguing Staying in the conversation when you have difficulty modulating your anger makes it likely you'll say things you'll regret. If it's possible you will say hurtful things that you'll regret and can't take back, ask for a 'time out' with intention to come back to the conversation. You may need 10 minutes or 10 days. It's the willingness to come back to the conversation and initiate that is key,. Use the time out to actively calm the mind and the body so that you express yourself in a more mindful, intentional manner. You Shouldn't Post About Your Conflict on Facebook When you're angry, broadcasting your feelings to your friends and family on Facebook and other social networks will more than likely come back to haunt you. Posting something publicly can't be taken back. You Shouldn't Write Emails The same applies to sending an angry email—you can't take back a heated rant after you hit the send button. If you can't resist writing down your angry thoughts, jot down your feelings in a Word document. This way you can't send it hastily and can still safely clear out your feelings. You Shouldn't Drink Alcohol Reaching for a glass of wine to calm yourself down after an angry encounter often does the opposite,. Alcohol makes it more likely you'll act out your anger because it removes impulse control. Alcohol lowers inhibitions by acting on the frontal lobes of the brain, which are responsible for controlling the impulses that prevent us from giving in to urges to harm others or ourselves. This may lead to more permanent destruction by doing things you'll regret, all from a temporary emotion. You Shouldn't Ignore Your Blood Pressure The risk of a heart attack and stroke increases in the two hours following angry outbursts, especially among former heart attack patients. Heart attack risk increased nearly five times and stroke risk rose by three times. If you're prone to high blood pressure, one of the smartest things to do when angry is to check it. Individuals who become angry should know how their blood pressure responds. If it's going up, they need to work diligently to manage their anger with exercise, better sleep, and bio-feedback techniques. You Shouldn't Ruminate Obsessively thinking about ways the other person harmed you or was unfair to you—known as rumination—does not resolve anything. If you find yourself on the receiving end of someone else's anger, you may be able to calm them down by first keeping your own cool. Start out talking to the angry person in a manner that matches his or her level of emotion and then gradually become calmer and steadier as you speak to them. This leads them to a calmer place.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Since Valentine’s Day reminds us of candy, and candy reminds us of chocolate, here’s some info about that delicious, sweet, brown candy called chocolate. Chocolate is a food made from the seeds of a cacao tree. It is used in many desserts like pudding, cakes, candy, and ice cream. It can be a solid form like a candy bar or it can be in a liquid form like hot chocolate. The taste of chocolate is often described as sweet because chocolate makers usually add a lot of sugar and milk for taste. This means that chocolate can be bad for your teeth and health. It is best to eat chocolate in moderation.
Types of chocolate
There are three main types of chocolate: white chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate. White chocolate tastes much sweeter than the other two types, because it has more of the sweeter ingredients in it. White chocolate does not have any cocoa in it. It is mostly made of cocoa butter. Milk chocolate is sweet, but not as sweet as white chocolate. Milk chocolate has some cocoa. Dark chocolate is the least sweet and has the strongest chocolate flavor. Dark chocolate has up to 60-85 percent cocoa (which is really bitter).
Safety
Chocolate is safe to eat unless it is eaten in large amounts. Some animals, like dogs, become sick if they eat chocolate. People with diabetes can also get sick from eating chocolate. Dark chocolate contains ingredients that lower blood pressure and fight disease. Small amounts of dark chocolate have been found to lower the risk of heart disease because of polyphenol in chocolate. It is necessary to eat moderate amount of chocolate.
History of chocolate
The cacao tree was first found to be useful for its seeds about two thousand years ago. Early Central Americans and Mexicans used the seeds from the cacao tree to make a drink that tasted bitter, not sweet. Only the important people could drink it. The word for "chocolate" in almost every language comes from its name in the Nahuatal language of Mexico, chocolat. Later on, this drink was made sweeter and made into the treat that is known today as hot chocolate. It was made popular by Spanish explorers who brought it from North America to Spain. When chocolate was sweetened and made into candy, it became a very popular treat for many Europeans. At first, only the rich could afford chocolate. Now, many people enjoy it. Most cocoa today is made in Africa.

Surprising Reasons Why You're Gaining Weight Food Labels Don't fall for the fat-free and low-fat labels. Studies find that many people take the term 'fat-free' as an invitation to pig out. On the contrary, generally, when fat is totally removed from a cookie like product, the fat is replaced with high amounts of sugar to lend more flavor to the taste. As a result, insulin levels peak in the body, which of course in turn leads to weight gain. In savory food products, when the product is "fat free", lots of salt (sodium) is usually added to enhance the flavor profile. Justifying Indulgent Eating It's natural to want to reward yourself after hard work at the gym. But, surprisingly, most people see that reward as indulgent food. Most people often say to themselves something along the lines of, 'hey, I did a double workout this morning, I earned this 600-calorie slice of pie a la mode'. This just isn't the case, remember the good old saying 'you are what you eat? Well that's the truth. Exercise (even lots of it) cannot erase poor eating habits. Overtraining Over training is also a common reason that people tend to gain weight. Long workouts can take a toll on your emotion and psychological well-being, which is very important to weight loss. Completing longer workouts will put unnecessary pressure on yourself which will cause over stress. Stress Stress is often associated with a temporary loss of appetite, but chronic stress can actually be tied with an increase of appetite and weight gain. A study by Dr. Elissa Epel found that often the activity that relieves stress becomes eating, and since with depression your neuro-endocrine system does not work properly it sends a hormonal signal which makes you feel hungry. Dehydration Dehydration can seriously affect the mechanics of your body. It affects how your body burns fat and can encourage an excessive calorie consumption. Also, dehydration can slow down your metabolism, cause fatigue, digestive disorders, and the energy needed for your body to maintain or lose weight.

Presidents Day History President's Day, or Washington's Birthday as it is still legally known, was originally designed as a celebration of George Washington's birthdate. In 1880, Congress voted to make this the first national holiday which honored an individual. In 1968, Congress enacted the Uniform Monday Bill, to give workers as many long weekends as possible. This moved as many holidays to a standard Monday each year. Many states were already honoring Abraham Lincoln's birthday, February 12th, and this celebration was combined with George Washington's birthday, for one federal holiday. It is observed on the third Monday in February each year.
Facts about Presidents Day •According to the Julian calendar, Washington was born February 11, 1732. The Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1752, changing Washington's birthday to February 22nd. •Since 1888, Washington's Farewell Address has been read aloud in the U.S. Senate on February 22nd. •George Washington was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, first U.S. President, and President of the Constitutional Convention. •Presidents Day never falls on Washington's actual birthdate (Feb. 22nd). What is an appropriate toy? One that suits the individual dog in terms of appeal and interest, size, safe construction, relative durability and ability to exercise body and mind. But owner responsibility involves more than shopping. It requires supervision. Nearly any toy can pose a hazard in one way or another, so you must monitor your dog's interaction with every toy. Over time, you will learn which toys your dog can handle without close supervision ... which toys are fine for short periods ... and which toys your pet gets carried away with, and thus should be removed.

Cold Weather Protection for Pets * Coats and booties can help your dog stay warm. Short-haired or elderly dogs benefit from wearing a coat or sweater. Look for coats or sweaters with high collars or a turtleneck that covers the dog from the base of the tail on top to the belly underneath. * Remember to be careful with sick or older dogs. They are more sensitive to cold weather. For any dog sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him out only to relieve himself. * Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If necessary, paper train your puppy inside if he appears to be sensitive to the weather. * Clip the fur between toe pads to reduce the amount of snow that collects between toes. * To help protect dry, sensitive paws, try coating them with a bit of cooking spray before walks in very cold weather. * During deep snows, shovel out a potty spot for your dog. * Upon returning home, wipe snow and ice off your dog's feet, legs and belly. Little ice cubes can form in the sensitive spaces between the toes and toe-pads. Remove the ice carefully with your fingers since it may cling to the hairs between the paws. Wiping off your dog will remove any salt, antifreeze or other harmful chemicals that she could ingest them when licking her paws. * Consider keeping a container of warm water and cloths by the door for use after walks. It is good to rinse the paws before you wipe them dry, because lime rock salt and calcium chloride salt can irritate the foot pads and cause vomiting and diarrhea when licked. Dunking in the water will also dissolve ice and remove mud. * Many de-icing and ice-melting products are toxic. Read the labels of any projects you use, and store these products in tight containers. * Even brief exposure to sub-zero temperatures can lead to frostbite of the feet, nose or ears. Frost-bitten skin appears red, gray or whitish and may peel off. Prevent frostbite by removing ice and snow from paws and fur right away. If you suspect frostbite, take your pet to a warm place and thaw out frostbitten areas slowly by applying warm, moist towels. Change them frequently. Continue until the affected areas become flushed. Then contact a veterinarian for further care. * Do not be tempted to let dogs off leash in snow or ice. Canines often lose their scent in cold weather and can become lost. Dogs also can panic in snow storms and run away. The decreased daylight does not help either. More dogs are reported lost during the winter than any other season, so keep dogs on leash when outside a fenced yard and make sure yours always wears proper identification.

We issue vouchers each month to Planned Pethood. We are working with Mark Neely at the Rockwood City Animal Shelter in his established pet food pantry. We educate others about the importance of spaying and neutering, vaccinating, caring for, and properly vetting pets. We are a not for profit organization. We are not a 501c3. We rely on the donations of our community members to fund our vouchers and assist with pet care needs. Each dollar donated goes directly toward the care of pets in our area.
