By O.I. Seenya An “elderly” lady, stopping by McDonalds on her way home from work, and buying 10 hamburgers to take home for supper. Then, after carrying groceries in the house, sitting on the computer for awhile, then taking a nap. Later, getting up and fixing a full meal, only to remember (the next day) the hamburgers she forgot and left in the car.

(Just outside Roane County). A couple pulling into the parking lot of a Dr. office. After parking, and before they could put their cigarettes out and turn the engine off, a security guard rapidly walking up to their car window and roughly announcing “This is a smoke free zone, and smoking is not allowed on the grounds.” Geez! Don’t they have something better to “secure” than to monitor for smokers before they even get parked?

Hundreds of Roane Countians expressing their appreciation to the dozens of emergency workers, county agencies, departments and volunteers who so professionally prepared for the ice storm that hit last week. The results of their planning was responsible for less damage, and fewer injuries.

CORRECTION: Last month we posted a quote that read; Keep dreaming... Keep the dream alive: hit the snooze button... Some one called in and said we should change it to "hit the Snooze button that's what Washington does...

Blackie

I guess every child had a dog when they were growing up, and we had Blackie.

Of course, Blackie was black, medium sized, short-haired and skinny.

Blackie thought he owned the front porch at the house we lived in at Emory Gap. His favorite laying place was at the threshold of the front door.

How many times did us kids step out onto the dark porch, only to have Blackie jump up and yelp in pain because we had stepped on him? (You’d think he would have known that when the door opened from the inside, someone was going to step outside).

One morning, when the neighborhood kids were waiting for the school bus, Blackie got hit by a car. He let out a loud yelp, was thrown to the side of the road, and lay motionless.

Now, I didn’t particularly care for dogs, but this happening right in front of our eyes was devastating.

We sadly climbed on the bus, and looking back, we could see Blackie laying lifeless on the side of the road.

Later, Mama and our Aunt Betty went up to the highway with a big washtub and loaded Blackie up in it to take him to his final resting place.

About halfway to the house, Blackie jumped up, yelped, jumped out of the washtub and made a mad dash to get away from the two ladies who were evidently planning to bury him.

It scared Mama and Betty nearly to death, but then they laughed all day about it.

We didn’t believe our eyes when we got home from school, and there was Blackie, laying, alive on the front porch.

Funny, but I don’t actually remember how Blackie did die years later, but I hope he was dead this time when he was buried.

The main characters are from a pair of warring families, yet fall in love when they meet at a ball in Capulet’s house. Through a series of intriguing twists and turns, the two star-crossed lovers are ultimately married – only to die through tragic of circumstances.

Shakespeare’s classic play begins with conflict. Citizens of the fair Italian city of Verona are embroiled in a contentious brawl defending the honor of rival clans (and their employers), the Montagues and Capulets.

The lead male character, Romeo, is quickly shown to be a member of the former. Though pining for the love of Rosaline, he sneaks into a ball hosted by her uncle, the patriarch of the house of Capulet.

However, when he arrives, he is enchanted by Juliet, the beautiful daughter of his father’s enemy–and catastrophe soon follows.

A string of violent acts leaves Romeo in exile, left to wonder what has become of his hometown from afar – but not without marrying Juliet in a secret ceremony first. Alas, Capulet, unaware of his daughter’s sacred vows, attempts to marry her off to a fitting suitor.

Not knowing what to do, the young woman ingests a potion to induce a coma, believing she will be able to sneak away to join her husband after two days asleep.

When Romeo hears the news Juliet has “died” from one of his servants, he slips into the crypt where she is buried to ingest a poison, intent on joining her on the other side of death.

After encountering and slaying another foe, he swallows the toxin and dies at her side. Juliet, rising from her drug-induced sleep, finds her husband dead and stabs herself in the heart with a dagger. Filled with grief at the loss of their children, the Montagues and Capulets reach a truce to put a stop to the bloodshed for good.

Gravity and Tides Question: Before gravity was understood, what did the ancients think caused tides?

Rockwood Memories By: Ray Collet

A few years ago when I first started writing the Rockwood Memories column, mostly via the internet and sending it out to friends, I decided to have a contest similar to a lot of the ones that newspapers have about favorite "whatevers." The email response and ballots mailed to me and phone calls were terrific so I decided to reprint my article that details the winners. Hope this brings back some memories...The article reads,...

A couple of weeks have passed since our column asking for your votes on the favorites from the 40's, 50's , and 60's. The response from phone calls and emails were tremendous and I thank each and every one of you. A few even came in from Florida and I was worried about " hanging chade " as in the last presidential election, but our ballots were much simpler and a lot more important.

Well, my wife and I are all dressed up in our finest formal attire, a few friends are over so we can get right to the winners......THE ENVELOPES PLEASE....

In the Best Burger Category, there was little doubt as to who would win. Bert Brown's Cafe was the overwhelming choice and rightly so.

The Favorite Hot Dog winner was Archie's Drive In. Archie's barely beat out the Pool Room for that honor. Floyd's Cafe and Ralph's Drive-In also had a good number of votes.

The Pool Room came out on top for the best Chili. Others gathering votes were Brown's Cafe, The B & J Cafe, Foster Pelfrey's Canteen, Ragar's Restaurant and Floyd's Cafe.

The winner in the Favorite Department Store was Bernard's with Penny's and Dewey's a close second and third.

The Best Grocery Store was a tie between King's and Mee's with Bristow's and Hickey's getting a good number of votes.

In the Auto Dealer category, Molyneaux was the winner, followed by Copper and Cotton Bacon and Hutcherson Motors.

The winner as the Favorite Barber wa The Flat Top King, Tom (Prune ) Pierce. Johnny Martin received a lot of votes too, as well as Luke Brandon.

The Majorette category had a lot of vote getters and leading the way was Arlene Johnson. Others who received a large number of votes were Judy Owings, Judy Thomas, Jewel Rader, June Blake, ( if you want your girl to be an outstanding majorette, sart her name with a J ) , Sherry Shelton and Nanita Greene also received a lot of votes.

The favorite cheerleader category also had a lot of vote getters. Winning was Micki Hickey. Others getting votes were Martha Alexander, Sherry Corera, Mary Lynn Evans, Carol Haga, Gayle Cooper and Patti Roberts.

The Favorite Football Player ended in a three way tie between Tom Pemberton, Tommy Roberts and Johnny Lawson. There were so many great football players in Rockwood history that it would have been virtually impossible to break this tie, so I never voted in this one. Others were Carl Melhorn, Jim Archey, C.D. (Cedar) Mee, David Simcox, Barry Norton , Walter Janoe, Jim Barnes and Tom Evans. These are certainly all worthy of being chosen number ONE. In The Basketball Boys voting, Stewart Siler led this one. He was followed in no particular order by Tommy Starr, Barry Norton, Johnny Ward Jim Blye, Jim Barnes and Eddie Bilbrey.

Barbara Mead came out as the winner in the Girls Basketball category with Sylvia Simpson a close second. They were followed by Sandra Coates, Jeanette Holt, Gail Cooper, Nola Ann Pass, Betsy Evans, Nancy Ingram, and Margie Pair.

As for the Favorite Summer Activity, the Rockwood Beach ran away with the voting, followed by the skating rink, baseball, fishing and bike riding.

And as expected, the Most Unforgettable Person in Rockwood really had a lot of different vote getters. Among them were Dr. Wilson, Dr. Phillips, Dr. John R. Neal, T. R. Eutsler, Professor Middlebrooks, Tom Harper Evans, Mildred Lindsey, Tom Pemberton, and Ear "Hot Dog"l Long, and many more. These were among the leading vote getters.

The winner in this category wa a tie between Jack Trammel and Dan Franklin, bot truly ERSON DISCOUN D loved by Rockwood.

N Thanks for your votes, emails, and telephone calls. The interest and participation in this was fantastic. I hope this will spur more interest in Rockwood and keep us classmates more in touch with each other.

What is in Chewin' Gum?

Companies carefully guard their recipes for making chewing gum, but all chewing gum has the same basic ingredients. However, specific ingredients, give the gum delicious taste, are kept as secret. The basic ingredients are: gum base, softeners, sweeteners and flavorings. The ingredient that makes your gum 'chewable' is gum base.

Gum base is the main ingredient in modern chewing gum.

Originally, chewing gum was made from the latex sap (chicle) of the sapodilla tree or other tree saps. For many years, gum base was made from chicle which was the chief ingredient in chewing gum. Today many modern chewing gums use rubber instead of chicle. In the middle 1900s, chemists learned to make synthetic rubber, which became a substitute for most natural rubber in chewing gums. Most gums are made from a synthetic rubber, or a mixture of artificial and natural bases.

Softeners are added to retain moisture. The most popular softeners are glycerin or vegetable oil based.

Those ingredients are used to help prevent the gum from becoming hard or to stark.

Sweeteners are added to gum to give it that sweet flavor. Those ingredients are usually sugar, corn syrup and even beet juice. Sugar is probably the healthiest off all sweeteners. There are many synthetic sweeteners, but the most used are xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol and aspartame are also used.

A flavor ingredient in chewing gum has been found to provide long lasting, high intensity and high quality flavor. The flavorings are added last. The most used flavors in chewing gums are: peppermint (called only mint), fruit, spearmint (a variation of mint flavor), menthol (a mint related flavor). Other flavors are synthetically created and perfected in the lab.

Gum bases are mixed with other ingredients to make chewing gum.

Bubble gum contains more of the gum base and softener.

The ingredients in the chewing gum depend on the type of gum being made.

Kingston, Tennessee Howard Carlisle Leffew, age 80, of Kingston passed away Sunday, January 20, 2013 in Sebring, Florida surrounded by his family. He was born on January 4, 1933 in Harriman and was a resident of Kingston but lived the winter months in Florida. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Mr. Leffew was a United States Army veteran who served his country proudly during the Korean Conflict.

He is preceded in death by parents, Alonza Jackson & Charlise Jenkins Leffew; brother, Larry Eugene Leffew and sister, Joyce Leffew Davis.

Statement from Senator Ken Yager regarding the passing of Bob Humphreys (NASHVILLE, TN), December 14, 2012 -- “I was very sad to hear of the passing of Bob Humphreys,” said Senator Ken Yager (R-Harriman).

“He was a longtime friend. Active church leader, loving husband and father, and civic minded are words that come to mind in remembering Bob. Few people have made their mark on a community such as he has. I had the privilege to work with him when he was Mayor of Kingston and later a member of the Roane County 911 Board. He was always fair and sought to do the right thing. The entire community will miss him. I offer my sincere condolences to his wife and children.”

Mrs. Shirley Voyles Smith, age 75 of Harriman, went home to be with the Lord Monday January 21, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. She has been a faithful member of Big Emory Baptist Church since she joined the church in 1950. Shirley worked at Burlington Mills in Harriman for more than 19 years. She later went to work at Acme Drug in Harriman where she remained until it closed. Shirley then began working at Chase Drugs where her smile and good humor touched the lives of everyone she met. She was preceded in death by her parents: Paul and Edith Harvey.

One brother: Claude Harold Harvey. One sister: Betty Jean Harvey. One nephew: David Harvey. And a sister-in-law: Helen Harvey. She is survived by her husband: Nick Smith. Three sons: Dallas Greg Voyles, Terry Voyles and Andy Voyles. One daughter and son-in-law: Cynthia and Darrell Cook. Nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Two brothers: Dean and Roy Harvey. One sister: Lillie Hall. A special friend: Larry Hill. And a host of nieces, nephews and other family, friends and loved ones.

The leanin’ side

Every time I am asked to pray, I think of the old fellow who always prayed, 'Lord, prop us up on our leanin' side'.

After hearing him pray that prayer many times, someone asked him why he prayed that prayer so fervently.

He answered, 'Well sir, you see, it's like this... I got an old barn out back. It's been there a long time; it's withstood a lot of weather; it's gone through a lot of storms, and it's stood for many years. It's still standing.

But one day I noticed it was leaning to one side a bit.

So I went and got some pine poles and propped it up on its leaning side so it wouldn't fall.

Then I got to thinking about that and how much I was like that old barn.

I've been around a long time. I've withstood a lot of life's storms. I've withstood a lot of bad weather in life, I've withstood a lot of hard times, and I'm still standing too. But I find myself leaning to one side from time to time, so I like to ask the Lord to prop us up on our leaning side, 'cause I figure a lot of us get to leaning to.

Sometimes we get to leaning toward anger, leaning toward bitterness, leaning toward hatred, leaning toward cussing, leaning toward a lot of things that we shouldn't. So we need to pray, 'Lord, prop us up on our leanin' side, so we will stand straight and tall again, to glorify the Lord.''

Household Hints

 A few ice cubes, some salt and a cut up lemon run through your garbage disposal will eliminate odors and clean away gunk.  Add a dash of vinegar to your dishwater for easy grease removal.  De-Crust the Microwave: Drop a lemon slice into a bowl filled with water and bring it to a boil in the microwave. Allow steam to form, then open microwave and wipe the inside with a damp cloth.  Fill your crock pot with soapy water and cook on high for an hour.

Rinse with a tablespoon of vinegar mixed into the final rinse water.  Soak ice trays in vinegar to remove hard water build-up.  Quick and Easy Bowl Toilet Cleaner: Drop an Alka-Seltzer in your toilet bowl; the fizzing action acts as a scrubber. Swish with toilet brush and flush.  Baked-On Food Grime: Boil Coca-Cola in the pan to loosen bakedon food in even the messiest pots and pans.  Streak-Free Stemware with Sparkle: Wash stemware by hand, then dip in a sink full of hot rinse water that has a tablespoon of vinegar added to it. Dry with a clean, soft cloth.  Fill your glass coffee maker pot with Coca-Cola and let sit overnight, then wash. As an alternative, run plain water with a tablespoon of vinegar through the coffee-making cycle, then run another pot of plain water through.  General Carpet Stains: Blot up as much as possible with paper towels. Then moisten stain with club soda, blot and repeat. Once stain is removed, place several layers of clean white rags or cloth diapers over wet spot, then cover with a plastic bag and heavy books for an hour to allow moisture to wick up out of the carpet.  Easy Brass Tarnish Remover: Soak brass articles in cherry Kool-Aid for 10 minutes, then rinse and wipe dry.  Clog-Free Drains: Avoid caustic drain cleaners by pouring boiling water down your drains once a week to keep them running freely.  Clean as You Go: While preparing meals, keep spills wiped up, put ingredients back after use, and place dirty utensils and dishes in soapy water. Makes for a much easier cleanup after supper, when you least feel like cleaning.

Penny Pinchers Cheap cleaning aids  Remove coffee stains. Scrub the stain with baking soda paste. To make paste, just mix baking soda and water.  Remove grease/oil stains. Blot the stain with dishwashing detergent. If the stain has soaked in, mix one part vinegar with two parts water to make an all-natural cleaner. Apply to the stain and wash. By the way, did you know vinegar can replace 30 household products?  Remove ink stains. Spray the stain with hairspray or rubbing alcohol and blot the area.

Repeat until most of the stain is gone, then wash.  Remove blood stains. First, make sure your stained item doesn’t bleach out. Then, pour some regular, drugstore hydrogen peroxide and let it soak before washing it in cold water.  Remove body odor. Spray the problem area (usually the armpits) with a 50/50 dilution of alcohol and water, and then hang it up to line dry. You want to kill the bacteria without damaging the garment.  Remove moth ball odor. Try dry-hanging your clothes out in the sun first. If the smell doesn’t dissipate, seal your clothes in a plastic bag with some dryer sheets or dry lavender, a natural moth repellent. So the next time you put your clothes into storage, use dry lavender instead of moth balls.

These methods are safe to use on 100% cotton or cotton/synthetic blends, but not all of them are applicable to all fabrics.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes HATTIE SHILLINGS In a hurry? Here’s some piping hot recipes that you can make in 15 minutes.

Chinese Chicken Fried Rice

1 egg 2 cups cooked white rice, cold 1 tablespoon water 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 cup cooked, chopped chicken 1 onion, chopped meat 1. In a small bowl, beat egg with water. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium low heat. Add egg and leave flat for 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from skillet and cut into shreds.

2. Heat oil in same skillet; add onion and saute until soft. Then add rice, soy sauce, pepper and chicken. Stir fry together for about 5 minutes, then stir in egg. Serve hot.

Salmon with Brown Sugar Glaze 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

4 (6 ounce) boneless salmon fillets salt and ground black pepper to taste

1.Preheat the oven's broiler and set the oven rack at about 6 inches from the heat source; prepare the rack of a broiler pan with cooking spray.

2.Season the salmon with salt and pepper and arrange onto the prepared broiler pan. Whisk together the brown sugar and Dijon mustard in a small bowl; spoon mixture evenly onto top of salmon fillets.

3.Cook under the preheated broiler until the fish flakes easily with a fork, 10 to 15 minutes.

Broiled Tilapia Parmesan 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup butter, softened 3 tablespoons mayonnaise 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon dried basil

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/8 teaspoon onion powder 1/8 teaspoon celery salt 2 pounds tilapia fillets

1.Preheat your oven's broiler. Grease a broiling pan or line pan with aluminum foil.

2.In a small bowl, mix together the Parmesan cheese, butter, mayonnaise and lemon juice. Season with dried basil, pepper, onion powder and celery salt. Mix well and set aside.

3.Arrange fillets in a single layer on the prepared pan. Broil a few inches from the heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Flip the fillets over and broil for a couple more minutes. Remove the fillets from the oven and cover them with the Parmesan cheese mixture on the top side. Broil for 2 more minutes or until the topping is browned and fish flakes easily with a fork. Be careful not to over cook the fish.

Growing Up In Harriman (1933-1945) Part II By: Pete Semanick

Pete Semanick was born in Harriman on September 19th, 1930.

This is the 2nd entry of a series of articles recounting his youth in Harriman, Tennessee. For questions or comments contact psemanic@swcp.com Pole Beans, Leather Britches, Pokeweed and Muscadines During the spring of each year in the large field behind our house many of the tenants planted small gardens of vegetables to supplement families with food during the Depression years. During these lean years the federal government offered free commodities: butter, flour, rice, oatmeal, peanut butter, and margarine. Margarine was packaged in a sealed plastic bag that included a small capsule of orange liquid food coloring. One would pop the capsule and knead the liquid into the margarine inside the plastic bag, until it was a uniform yellow color.

My grandma Mattie harvested green beans (called pole beans). She always canned half her crop; the remainder of the beans were broken into small pods and placed on newspaper and spread out to dry on the sunny part of the back porch. These were called “leather britches”, which would be referred to as “dehydrated” today. Okra came next to be canned for the coming months.

During the right time of the season, grandma Mattie would send me up the railroad tracks and I would pick muscadines, which are like a grape and have been cultivated for four hundred years, and pokeweed, commonly called poke. She would boil the muscadines until the hulls were tender (almost impossible) and make jelly from them. Long ago early settlers learned from Native Americans how to prepare pokeweed. All of the pokeweed plant is poisonous, but especially the root, so proper preparation was important. Spring was the season to pick the leaves as the plant becomes more toxic as it matures. The leaves were trimmed from the stalk and boiled and rinsed a couple of times to remove the toxicity. Seasoning during the final cooking included bacon grease, salt and pepper. According to the American Cancer Society, pokeweed contains properties that fight cancer cells. The berries from the pokeweed have long been used to make ink: the Declaration of Independence was signed with pokeweed berry ink.

During the harvest of the corn, the stalks were placed throughout the field for drying in a shape resembling Indian tepees. Several of us neighborhood kids would make little rooms under the stalks, where we played hide-and-seek games in the evening hours.

Report from the State Senate

The 108 General Assembly convened in organizational session on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, to organize and prepare for the regular session beginning January 28.

At the organizational session, both houses elected their leadership for a term of two years.

In the Senate, Sen. Ron Ramsey (R-Blountville) was reelected Speaker with bipartisan support. The Speaker of the Senate serves as the Lt. Governor and is second in line of succession if the Governor vacates the office.

The Speaker is a very powerful position. He appoints all committees and the committee chairs.

There are nine standing committees. I was re-appointed chair of the all important State and Local Government Committee and put on the Commerce and Labor Committee as well.

In a Join Session of the two houses the legislators elected the state’s constitutional officers: Comptroller (Justin Wilson), Treasurer (David Lillard, Jr.) and Secretary of State (Tre Hargett).

With the committees in place, the Senate is ready begin regular session on January 28. Expect a short session with adjournment around May 1. No need to stay any longer than we need to.

State and Local Government Committee has the heaviest calendar in the Senate. It has jurisdiction over all matters affecting or involving cities and counties, utility districts, veterans affairs and the wine and spirits industries, among other things. Needless to say we have a varied calendar. One bill that has drawn a lot of media attention is the Wine in Grocery Stores bill. Pushed by the box stores, the bill has failed before, but with new members, the issue is being brought again.

Expect workman’s compensation, school vouchers , ” guns in parking lots”, TennCare expansion to dominate the debate. More about these and other issues in next month’s report.

"Home Video Epiphany" By: Debra Carpenter On Christmas Eve, when my husband, daughter and I celebrated Christmas at my mom’s house, we were sent home with triple the stuff we arrived with. The best items? Home videos from my childhood.

My mom encouraged me to take some of them home, saying that I had my own family now and should keep them around to show my daughter (or for my husband to use as serious blackmail). I had to dig out the VHS player and sit in my daughter’s room to watch them, but the things I found, and realized, made it worth it.

As I sat in my daughter’s tiny bedroom (on a Disney princess pillow, no less) and watched our family vacations, my spontaneous performances, recitals and talent shows, and times when my parents just filmed me while I slept or colored at the table, I couldn’t help but tear up and wonder what happened to the little girl on screen. Did she have any inkling that she would end up to be so lucky, with a handsome husband who truly loved her and a beautiful daughter that thought she hung the moon? I had to pull it together because the sound quality on those old VHS tapes isn’t the greatest, and I had to be totally silent to hear anything. Plus, it would be so embarrassing if my husband saw me sobbing at a video of me in a poodle skirt, singing a doo-wop song at my 2nd grade talent show.

Sitting in the living room of my childhood home, my mom is recording a conversation between my dad and I. I’m 4 years old and (evidently) obsessed with belly buttons. As I repeatedly lift up my shirt to show my belly button to the camera, my dad tries to get my attention. I say, “Not right now, Daddy. I’m on Candid Camera!” He says, “Debra, someday, maybe in 20 or 30 years, you will look back at this video.

Why don’t you talk to me so you can have something nice to remember?” When I watched that part, chills ran down my spine. Here I was, 20 years later, doing exactly what he had predicted. And while I did wish that I had been a little more conversational and less “Girls Gone Wild,” the video still had an incredible impact.

It only took me 2 days to get through all the videos. When I finished them, I put them into a box and placed in on the bookshelf. It all seemed very symbolic to me. My childhood was fun, it was warm and happy, and it molded me into the woman, wife, and mother that I am today. But I can’t put my focus on the past. After all, I’m busy making memories for my daughter and recording home videos for her to watch in 20 years. Maybe she will be sitting in her daughter’s room (on a Disney princess pillow, no less) when she puts in the movie, sees how much love and attention we gave her, and tries to cry quietly so her husband won’t hear. Maybe she will wisely put those videos on her bookshelf when she’s done so she can get back to what’s most important—the present. And maybe she will have a clearer understanding of how much her father and I love her, and know that we love her enough to record even the silliest and most mundane moments, because those are the moments that really make up your childhood.

Why You Must Supplement!

A common recommendation made by most medical doctors is that in order to get all the nutrients necessary to maintain health you must, on a daily basis, eat food from each of the four basic food groups (i.e., meats and proteins, fruits and vegetables, breads and grains and dairy products). Dr. Joel Wallach challenges this belief when lecturing on health and highlights the reasons why it is practically impossible to get all the nutrients (especially the minerals) necessary to prevent disease by eating food from the four basic food groups. Dr. Wallach argues that an unfortunate consequence of the American public's faith in the four basic food groups has been a huge increase in the incidence of chronic degenerative diseases such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc. over the past 40 years.

The key points of Dr. Wallach's argument are:

1. There are 90 nutrients essential to human health.

2. A deficiency in any one of these nutrients can lead to or cause, on average ten diseases. Example, a deficiency in copper can lead to premature gray hair, aneurism and stroke.

3. The 90 essential nutrients fall into four broad categories: amino acids; fatty acids; vitamins; and minerals.

4. If you eat a disciplined, well rounded diet you can get all the amino acids, fatty acids and vitamins you need.

5. It is practically impossible to get all of the minerals you need regardless of what kind or what quantity of food you eat.

6. Why is this so? Human beings ideally get minerals by eating foods such as vegetables, fruits and grains. However, such foods are grown in soils which are massively deficient in minerals, a fact which is documented by the findings reported at the 1993 World Eco Summit in Rio De Janeiro.

7. Minerals serve as catalysts for the body's ability to use amino acids, fatty acids and vitamins. Therefore, without the necessary mineral co-factors it is unlikely that we are getting the maximum benefit from these nutrients.

Conclusion: You must take mineral supplements to achieve optimal sustainable health!

Many Americans already take mineral supplements but most do not realize that there are three different types of mineral supplements each varying greatly in their absorbability and their potential to become toxic: Metallic minerals — These minerals are similar to the kind found in rocks and soils and are only 8% to 12% absorbable. They can build to dangerous levels, accumulating in fat, liver and brain tissue. Most tablet-form minerals such as Centrum, Theragram and One-A-Day are of this type. A metallic mineral is not organic in nature. Consequently, the body has a very difficult time absorbing it, and eliminating what it can't absorb. Chelated minerals — These are metallic minerals which have been bound to a carrying agent (usually an amino acid or enzyme) which assists in the absorption of the mineral in the small intestine. This method, patented in the 1970's, makes metallic minerals much more absorbable (35 to 45%) and much less potentially toxic to the body. Organic Colloidal Minerals — These minerals have been processed through a plant and have undergone a biochemical transformation which makes them extremely absorbable (90% to 98%) and non toxic. Specifically, when a mineral is drawn from the soil into a plant via its roots, the process alters the mineral's bio-electric charge, changing it from positive to negative. Because the linings of our intestines carry an overall positive charge a natural magnetic gradient is created across which the mineral is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Metallic minerals, on the other hand, do not undergo this biochemical transformation and therefore remain positively charged. A positively charged metallic mineral can cause problems for the body. The body is designed to recognize and use minerals in a organic colloidal form and will automatically rid itself of any excess. By contrast, the body has more difficulty recognizing positively charged minerals. As a consequence they tend to accumulate in the body to sometimes dangerous levels. This is why metallic arsenic, for example, has been found to be 65 times more toxic than is organically bound arsenic.

Buyer Beware: Don't be fooled into buying mineral supplements that simply claim to be "colloidal." The term "colloidal" refers only to the very small particle size of the minerals used in these products. A far more important determinant of both the absorbability and safety of a mineral is whether or not the mineral is "organic" (i.e., derived from plant sources). Organic colloidal minerals are up to 20 times more absorbable and non-toxic when compared to inorganic colloidal minerals. It is a sad fact of the marketplace that many of the products being marketed as colloidal minerals are, in fact, inorganic colloidal minerals!

Valentine's In God's Sight

Some received chocolates tied with a red bow, now it's gone with nothing to show.

Some received flowers so pretty and bright, It seems like they wilted over night.

Someone became engaged on that special day, now their love has faded away.

Some had a phone call from a special friend, just to say I love you and then, It made you so happy to know that they cared, and the special friendship they shared.

It was just another day gone by, for some to sit at home all alone to weep and cry.

Isn't it strange how holidays affect each one, since that day has come and gone.

We are all valentines in God's sight, He loves us every one with all His might, He's better than chocolates tied with a bow, He loves his children and lets them know.

Give of yourself to someone today, It's more lovelier than a bouquet.

Don't wait till another year, to bring someone you love, a smile, some hope, and cheer.

Smoky Mountain Speedway Schedule Announced by: JOHN GRIFFIN

WOO! Yes, Woo as in the world of Outlaws Dirt Late Series.

After starting off the season for 2013, the Ice Bowl in Alabama was held January 1st.

After this, race teams and drivers regrouped and then headed out the last of January and 1st of February for Georgia and Florida as Lucas Dirt starts their season.

Closer to home, the 2013 schedule has been released for Smoky Mountain Speedway.

Their 1st two headliners will be great as on March 26th, the Southern All Stars kick off the season opener paying $5,000 to win.

On April 26th, for the 1st time for the track, the world of Outlaws Dirt Later Series will invade the track with the winner to take home $10,000.

Lucas will be off this weekend, so look for a big field of cars to be at the track.

The Winter of My Life

You know.. Time has a way of moving quickly, and catching you unaware of the passing years.

It seems just yesterday that I was young, Just married and embarking on my new life with my mate.

And yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, And I wonder where all the years went.

I know that I lived them all..And I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.

But, here it is.. The winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast?

Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well.

Seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off That I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like...But, here it is.

My friends are retired and getting grey, they move slower and I see an older person now.

Some are in better and some worse shape than me. But, I see the great change.

Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant. But, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those Older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be.

Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day!

And taking a nap is not a treat anymore, it's mandatory! 'Cause if I don't on my own free will.

I just fall asleep where I sit! And so, now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared For all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, And I'm not sure how long it will last..This I know, that when it's over... Its over...

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done..things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done.

It's all in a lifetime...So, if you're not in your winter yet..let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. Whatever you’d like to accomplish in life, please do it quickly!

Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, As you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not!

You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...

So, live for today and say all the things you want your loved ones to remember...

And hope they appreciate and love you for all the things. You have done for them in all the years past!!

Life is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after.

Make it a fantastic one and, remember ~"It is health that is real wealth And not pieces of gold or silver."

Football Follies

The college football player knew his way around the locker room better than he did the library. So when my husband’s co-worker saw the gridiron star roaming the stacks looking confused, she asked how she could help.

“I have to read a play by Shakespeare,” he said.

“Which one?” she asked.

He scanned the shelves and answered, “William.”

Calling the Coach As a high school football coach, I’m aware that student athletes tend to focus too much on sports. A fellow coach, Bob, was talking about one such player, who called him at home one night. When his wife informed the kid that Bob wasn’t home, he became frantic and said he had to speak to the coach right away.

“Just calm down, and I’ll have him call you as soon as he gets home,” the coach’s wife told him. “What’s your number?”

The flustered kid replied, “Three.

The night before she was to attend a celebrity golf tournament, my friend Irene went to a party in honor of the event. Several of the famous athletes who were playing in the tournament were at the door greeting guests. Among them was Joe Montana, the pro football Hall of Fame quarterback and Super Bowl winner. Shaking my friend’s hand, he said, “Hi! Joe Montana.”

She didn’t know Joe Montana from Joe Six-Pack, so in all sincerity she extended her hand and said, “Irene. Minnesota.”

Teammates Our high school has lots of spirit, but that didn’t help the football team, who had yet to win a game. So when our principal saw some cheerleaders sitting in the stands, he asked, “Don’t you think you girls should be down there cheering for your team?” “I think,” one of them said, “we should be down there playing for our team.”

We even received a 530A structural pumper but unfortunately with the hose, brass couplings, copper fittings and tubing, etc. missing. I was witnessing military preparedness at it’s worst.

Although we had some bad experiences, all was not lost. We soon found crates with ample quantities of fire extinguishers that were badly needed for the hooch area and other facilities. Before the extinguishers, our fire protection consisted of fifty-five gallon open metal drums with three-gallon pails attached. To our dismay, as soon as we put the pails out, the Thai workers would steal them at night. I finally decided that four or five small holes in the buckets would prevent theft and would still be effective for fire fighting.

I was issued a blue jeep as my Fire Chief vehicle. Unbeknownst to the Vehicle Maintenance Officer, I worked a deal with the local civilian construction contractor foreman to paint the jeep red. Back in those PETE SEMANICK days it was wheeling and dealing at it’s best. After briefing my boss and the Base Commander it was agreed that getting the paint job would be in order. I just couldn’t see driving around in a blue jeep when the other assigned fire department vehicles were red. Prior to receiving the jeep I had used the P-6 ramp patrol vehicle as my Fire Chief vehicle. The jeep was much more suitable for the amount of driving my position required.

It was not all hard work during these early months. The firemen had plans to improve their own work environment and soon constructed a nice patio along side the main fire station. It included wooden tables and benches as well as a nice brick barbecue grill.

I was sure glad to see this new feature added as I previously had a very bad experience while eating dinner at “good quality” restaurant in Pattya, a nearby seaside resort village.

Our Base Commander had put out the word that our medical personnel recommended this particular restaurant “as safe” after a full-scale inspection of the facility. My Civil Engineering Commander, Major Lawson Seyfried, invited me to accompany him to the restaurant for a free meal at his expense. I gladly accepted his offer as I had not been off base since arriving.

He picked me up in his jeep and off we went. It was only a few miles up the road and once we arrived in Pattya we saw the big sign. It was a nice building and inside was even better. Clean, well lit and a courteous staff welcomed us. We decided to order something safe and we even brought our own water for drinking as a further safety measure. We both chose well-done broiled steak with boiled potatoes and boiled green beans-safe enough, we thought. It was a very enjoyable meal. We returned back to base and went to our separate quarters.

Early in the morning hours (02:30 A.M.) I awoke with severe stomach pains. It was necessary to get to the community latrine as soon as possible. Somewhere between my hooch and the latrine I passed out and woke up on my hands and knees. I then began crawling up the steps. Some how I managed to get to the commode and started the emptying process of my intestines and my stomach from both ends. I have never been so sick in my life. Once I was empty of everything I staggered back to my hootch and with my head swimming around and around, I finally fell asleep. One of my troops woke me up in the morning and I was still sick. Needless to say I went to the dispensary for a checkup. Once there I discovered I was not the only patient. It so happened that Major Seyfried was also there with the same symptoms. We were both diagnosed with the well-known and dreaded “Bangkok Belly”. After that, my visits off base were restricted to sightseeing and shopping, and my troops and I made good use of that barbecue grill.

An old story is told of a king in Africa who had a close friend with whom he grew up. The friend had a habit of looking at every situation that ever occurred in his life (positive or negative) and remarking, “This is good!”

One day the king and his friend were out on a hunting expedition.

The friend would load and prepare the guns for the king. The friend had apparently done something wrong in preparing one of the guns, for after taking the gun from his friend, the king fired it and his thumb was blown off. Examining the situation the friend remarked as usual, “This is good!” To which the king replied, “No, this is NOT good!” and proceeded to send his friend to jail.

About a year later, the king was hunting in an area that he should have known to stay clear of. Cannibals captured him and took him to their village. They tied his hands, stacked some wood, set up a stake and bound him to the stake. As they came near to set fire to the wood, they noticed that the king was missing a thumb. Being superstitious, they never ate anyone that was less than whole. So untying the king, they sent him on his way.

As he returned home, he was reminded of the event that had taken his thumb and felt remorse for his treatment of his friend. He went immediately to the jail to speak with his friend. “You were right,” he said, “it was good that my thumb was blown off.” And he proceeded to tell the friend all that had just happened. “And so I am very sorry for sending you to jail for so long. It was bad for me to do this.”

“No,” his friend replied, “This is good!” “What do you mean,’This is good’? How could it be good that I sent my friend to jail for a year?” “If I had NOT been in jail, I would have been with you.”

The most surprising fact when it comes to food dating? With the exception of baby food and formula, the U.S. Dept of Agriculture doesn’t require dates at all, nor is there a uniform system for dispensing them. From the USDA website: There is no uniform or universally accepted system used for food dating in the United States. Although dating of some foods is required by more than 20 states, there are areas of the country where much of the food supply has some type of open date and other areas where almost no food is dated.

The most important thing when it comes to food dating is to trust your senses. If it looks, smells, or tastes off, toss it. Poor storage and packaging defects can cause food to go bad before its time. Assuming the food is properly preserved, though, here’s a quick primer on how to use dates…

Sell-by dates...These dates aren’t that helpful for predicting the expiration of food you already have at home – a week or two past may be fine, but it’s not exact. “Sell-by” reflects store policy, not USDA rules.

It’s telling shelf stockers when food needs to be moved from its regular place to the store’s clearance area. Especially if you plan to cook or freeze the food immediately, sell-by dates can lead to great buys.

Use-by or best-by dates...These dates are basically quality guarantees by the manufacturer: The proper flavor and quality should last until at least this date when properly stored. Often these products are fine to eat past the listed date – but they might not taste great. The USDA says, “’Use-by’ dates usually refer to best quality and are not safety dates. But even if the date expires during home storage, a product should be safe, wholesome and of good quality if handled properly and kept at 40 °F or below.” Save money by not throwing out food that’s still safe if not quite as savory.

Expiration dates...While the federal government doesn’t require these, some states do on certain products – especially dairy, and often meat. This is one area where you don’t want to cut corners. If the label explicitly mentions expiration, listen to it – with one exception from EggSafety.org: “Cartons may carry an expiration date (EXP) beyond which the eggs should not be sold, but are still safe to eat.” The USDA says you have 3 to 5 weeks from purchase. That’s how the dates work. But the USDA also has a convenient list of storage times…Fresh or uncooked food in the fridge...Follow use-by date. For a sell-by date or no date, cook or freeze within this time frame: Hard cheese: 2-3 months, Eggs: 3-5 weeks, Yogurt: 3 weeks, Soft cheese: 1 week, Cured ham: 5-7 days Beef, veal, pork, lamb: 3-5 days, Milk: 3-5 days, Poultry and ground meat: 1-2 days, Sausage from pork, beef, or turkey: 1-2 days.

Cooked or processed foods in the fridge..Follow use-by date.

For a sell-by date or no date, cook or freeze within this time frame: Canned ham: 9 months unopened, 3-4 days after

opening, Commercial sliced bread: 2 weeks Bacon or hot dogs: 2 weeks unopened, 7 days after opening, Luncheon meat: 2 weeks unopened, 3 -5 days after opening, Cooked ham: 1 week unopened, 1 week after opening (3 days if sliced) Cooked poultry or sausage: 3-4 days unopened, 3-4 days after opening.

Pantry/cupboard: Canned fruits and vegetables: 2-5 years High-acid foods (pickles, tomatoes): 12 to 18 months.

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa , and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure.

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

MORAL: Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.
