• Great fishing at the steam plant. They’ve done a tremendous job cleaning up the ash spill mess—area looks better now than it ever did.

• An older, black hearse, sitting in front of a local grocery store with the license tag “666 Dead”.

• Dozens of emergency responders and other volunteers standing in the wind and cold, collecting Christmas money for underprivileged kids in our county.

• A dead fox seen from a local boat ramp, lying on the bottom of the river, in about 1 foot of water, with no visible wounds.

Precious Memories By: Kay Christopher

Sleigh Ride As most of you know, my sister, Sandra Stout and I, started the Roane Reader many years ago.

After over 17 years of meeting at her house three times a month to work on the paper, Sandra passed away. She really wanted me and her son Justin to continue putting the paper out, but I just didn’t have the heart to proceed with it at that time.

About six months later, I was standing on my deck, crying because I missed her so much—then it hit me—me and Justin could do it!

I called Justin at that very moment, and he agreed that we should start up The Roane Reader again.

I’m telling you this, because it pertains to the rest of my story.

Sandra’s very favorite Christmas song was “Sleigh Ride” (What lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you). She used to say that it just didn’t seem like Christmas until she heard that song.

The first Christmas that Justin and I started the paper again, I was going down Roane Street on my way to Sandra’s house (at that time Justin lived there), to work on the paper.

When I got in the middle of downtown Harriman, that song came on. I had to wipe my eyes when I went inside so Justin wouldn’t know why I was crying.

Two nights later, I was heading over there again to work on the paper with Justin, and when I got directly in front of Sandra’s house, the song came back on. I thought, wow, this is unreal.

But what happened the next night really stunned me beyond belief! Now this was different nights, and different times of day, and when I got in the exact same spot, directly in front of her house again, that song came back on!

I lost all track of time, and sat in the car, taking in the precious memories of my sister. I knew she had sent that song to me as a Christmas gift from Heaven.

Sandra, I so wish I could take a sleigh ride together with you.

Nothing to brag about

Father Norton woke up Sunday morning and realizing it was an exceptionally beautiful and sunny early spring day, decided he just had to play golf. So... he told the Associate Pastor he was feeling sick and persuaded him to say Mass for him that day.

As soon as the Associate Pastor left the room, Father Norton headed out of town to a golf course about forty miles away.

This way he knew he wouldn't accidentally meet anyone he knew from his parish. Setting up on the first tee, he was alone. After all, it was Sunday morning and everyone else was in church!

At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while looking down from the heavens and exclaimed , "You're not going to let him get away with this, are you?"

The Lord sighed, and said, "No, I guess not."

Just then Father Norton hit the ball and it shot straight towards the pin, dropping just short of it, rolled up and fell into the hole.

It was a 420 yard hole in one!

St. Peter was astonished. He looked at the Lord and asked, "Why did you let him do that?"

The Lord smiled and replied, "Who's he going to tell?"

A man in China decided that after five years of marriage, something wasn't right with his kids. He felt that he was far too attractive to have produced ugly children, so he not only decided to divorce his wife, he's also sued her for producing ugly children. He thought she must have had an affair.

After doing a little digging, it came out the his wife had in fact had close to $100K in plastic surgery before she met her husband.

The saddest part of the story is that the court awarded the husband $125K for having an incognito ugly wife in addition to ugly children.

At the end of the day, the kids definitely lost this one.....not only are they still unattractive, but it's been proven in court.

A police officer found a perfect hiding place for watching for speeding motorists.

Fixing Frozen Pipes Frozen pipes are one of the most distressing problems a homeowner can encounter. Here's how to prevent freezing pipes and how to un-freeze pipes if you're in a fix.

Freezing can create leaks because the frozen water expands and cracks the copper tubing. Not only do you have little to no water supply, but when the pipes do thaw out, you can have some serious leaks to repair.

Rules to Prevent Frozen Pipes Keep all water-supply piping away from outside walls, where it A dry March, wet April, and could be exposed to cold winter weather.

Tips to Fixing Frozen Pipes Try the hair-dryer trick. Find the area where the pipe appears to be frozen, and work the dryer up and down the pipe. If the pipe has cracked, water will start gushing out as soon as the ice is dislodged.

You may want to know where your nearest turn-off valve is before you try using a hair-dryer.

Signs of Drain Backups, How to Unclog Drains If you have running water in your home, here are a few important things you need to know about your drains!

At the kitchen sink: Let plenty of water run down the drain by keeping the faucet open for up to a half a minute each day.

Sink lines commonly plug because not enough water is flushed through them, especially after the garbage disposal is used.

Run the facet for about five seconds after you turn off the disposal.

This helps flush the line. Never pour hot oil or grease down the sink—whether or not you have a disposal.

About once a month fill the sink to the top with very hot water.

Using a fork or other kitchen utensil so you don't scald your hand, remove the sink's plug. As the clean, hot water swirls down through the sink line, it takes much of the grease buildup with it.

To keep a toilet from plugging: Don't put anything foreign down the toilet except toilet paper.

Items such as floss, Q-Tips, baby wipes, or any other paper product cling to the roots in the sewer and cause an immediate blockage.

Don't rely on chemicals Many people try chemicals before hiring a drain cleaning expert because they want to save money. Then they call the drain cleaner anyway because the chemical hasn't cleared the drain.

Chemicals can solidify in a drain line and aggravate the blockage. If the chemical doesn't eat through the blockage, therefore not flushing down the drain, the chemical sits in your sink line. It crystallizes, and then there is no way you can easily clean a sink line after chemicals harden in it.

Signs of Big Backups When your sewer is plugged or your septic tank needs pumping, here's what will happen: Water backs up out of your tub drain when you flush your toilet.

When you empty your bathtub, the water stop flowing and bubbles back at you or bubbles into the toilet.

When you empty your kitchen sink, the sink water backs up into the toilet.

When you flush your toilet, sewer water backs up through an outside downspout, patio drain, driveway drain, or the lowest floor drain in your house.

When you run a load of laundry, soapy water comes up into a toilet, shower, or floor drain.

People talk often of Angels, real or not they debate.

I know now they exist but learned so very late.

I'm grateful for my Angel who has led me day by day.

When I Get To Heaven At last I reach my final home The gates swing open wide I get a glimpse of glory I can't wait to get inside.

An angel beckons to me I hurry up to him He opens up a golden book And lets me look within.

I see my name is written On the page that he turns to He says you finally made it I've been waiting here for you.

He points in one direction And tells me "go that way" So I start my tour of heaven The place I get to stay.

I see the many mansions And walk the streets of gold I hear the angels praising God Just like I had been told.

And then I spot my loved ones They've been here many years We hug and kiss each other All smiles, there are no tears.

I look around for Jesus I know He'll soon appear I want to kneel and praise Him He's the reason I am here.

Two Traveling Angels Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest room.

Instead the angels were given a space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied... Things aren't always what they seem.

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife.

After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.

The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen! The first man had everything, yet you helped him. The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let their cow die. Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied.

When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmer's bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I told him to take the cow instead. Things aren't always what they seem.

Sometimes this is exactly what happens when things don't turn out the way we think they should. If you have faith in God, just trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You might not realize it until much later.

Coins on a tombstone

Have you ever been in a cemetery and saw coins laying on a tombstone?

There is actually a reason behind it. COINS LEFT ON TOMBSTONES While visiting some cemeteries you may notice that headstones marking certain graves have coins on them, left by previous visitors to the grave.

These coins have distinct meanings when left on the headstones of those who gave their life while serving in America's military, and these meanings vary depending on the denomination of coin. A coin left on a headstone or at the grave site is meant as a message to the deceased soldier's family that someone else has visited the grave to pay respect. Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited. A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together, while a dime means you served with him in some capacity. By leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the solider when he was killed. According to tradition, the money left at graves in national cemeteries and state veterans cemeteries is eventually collected, and the funds are put toward maintaining the cemetery or paying burial costs for indigent veterans. In the US, this practice became common during the Vietnam war, due to the political divide in the country over the war; leaving a coin was seen as a more practical way to communicate that you had visited the grave than contacting the soldier's family, which could devolve into an uncomfortable argument over politics relating to the war.

Some Vietnam veterans would leave coins as a "down payment" to buy their fallen comrades a beer or play a hand of cards when they would finally be reunited. The tradition of leaving coins on the headstones of military men and women can be traced to as far back as the Roman Empire.

The best way to succeed in life is to act on the advice we give to others.

Garter Snakes

Snakes, also known as Garter Snakes can be dangerous Yes, grass snakes, not rattlesnakes. Here's why.

A couple in Sweetwater, Texas, had a lot of potted plants. During a recent cold spell, the wife was bringing a lot of them indoors to protect them from a possible freeze.

It turned out that a little green garden grass snake was hidden in one of the plants. When it had warmed up, it slithered out and the wife saw it go under the sofa.

She let out a very loud scream.

The husband (who was taking a shower) ran out into the living room naked to see what the problem was. She told him there was a snake under the sofa.

He got down on the floor on his hands and knees to look for it. About that time the family dog came and cold-nosed him on the behind. He thought the snake had bitten him, so he screamed and fell over on the floor.

His wife thought he had had a heart attack, so she covered him up, told him to lie still and called an ambulance.

The attendants rushed in, would not listen to his protests, loaded him on the stretcher, and started carrying him out.

About that time, the snake came out from under the sofa and the Emergency Medical Tech saw it and dropped his end of the stretcher. That's when the man broke his leg and why he is still in the hospital.

The wife still had the problem of the snake in the house, so she called on a neighbor who volunteered to capture the snake. He armed himself with a rolled-up newspaper and began poking under the couch..

Soon he decided it was gone and told the woman, who sat down on the sofa in relief.

But while relaxing, her hand dangled in between the cushions, where she felt the snake wriggling around. She screamed and fainted, the snake rushed back under the sofa.

The neighbor man, seeing her lying there passed out, tried to use CPR to revive her.

The neighbor's wife, who had just returned from shopping at the grocery store, saw her husband's mouth on the woman's mouth and slammed her husband in the back of the head with a bag of canned goods, knocking him out and cutting his scalp to a point where it needed stitches.

The noise woke the woman from her dead faint and she saw her neighbor lying on the floor with his wife bending over him, so she assumed that the snake had bitten him. She went to the kitchen and got a small bottle of whiskey, and began pouring it down the man's throat.

By now, the police had arrived. Breathe here...

They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whiskey, and assumed that a drunken fight had occurred.

They were about to arrest them all, when the women tried to explain how it all happened over a little garden snake!

The police called an ambulance, which took away the neighbor and his sobbing wife.

Now, the little snake again crawled out from under the sofa and one of the policemen drew his gun and fired at it. He missed the snake and hit the leg of the end table. The table fell over, the lamp on it shattered and, as the bulb broke, it started a fire in the drapes.

The other policeman tried to beat out the flames, and fell through the window into the yard on top of the family dog who, startled, jumped out and raced into the street, where an oncoming car swerved to avoid it and smashed into the parked police car.

Meanwhile, neighbors saw the burning drapes and called in the fire department. The firemen had started raising the fire ladder when they were halfway down the street. The rising ladder tore out the overhead wires, put out the power, and disconnected the telephones in a ten-square city block area (but they did get the house fire out).

Time passed! Both men were discharged from the hospital, the house was repaired, the dog came home, the police acquired a new car and all was right with their world.

A while later they were watching TV and the weatherman announced a cold snap for that night. The wife asked her husband if he thought they should bring in their plants for the night.

And that's when he shot her.

Some stuff Christians should stop doing 1. Telling people “I’ll pray for you” without actually praying for them.

- Guilty as charged. I can’t think of anybody who hasn’t done this at one time or another. And while most of us don’t actually mean to forget, it’s probably best that we just set aside time on the spot to pray for people. Are we really so busy that we can’t stop and pray for someone’s needs? We need to make sure we are fulfilling our duties as Christians and actually follow through with them. One prayer could be the tipping point to someone coming to know the love of God. Don’t miss the opportunity to speak life into someone because you don’t think you have time.

2. Attending Church on Sunday but ignoring God’s voice the rest of the week.

- Ouch! This one stings a little. Many of us get in the habit of making God just another addition to our weekly check-list, but the reality is that our entire lives should revolve around him. God deserves #1 priority in each of our lives, and to treat him any differently would go against the foundations of the Christian faith. Evaluate the way you are spending your time, money, and energy. If you want to see a change in your life then you need to begin giving God the place of honor he deserves. Stop treating God like the last kid picked in dodge-ball.

3. Praying for God’s provision when we have yet to use what he has already provided.

- Way too many of us tend to treat God like a personal genie. Prayer was given to us as an open line of communication between us and God, but the harsh reality is that way too many of us try to use it like a drive-thru at a fast-food restaurant. You don’t get to pick and choose the way God provides, but you do get the opportunity to trust his plan and have faith in his promises. I can’t begin to explain how many times I’ve ignored God’s provision because it wasn’t wrapped the way I intended it to be. Every time we purposely ignoring God’s provision, we are indirectly telling him, “I don’t trust your plan.”

4. Trying to be so relevant that we actually hurt the message of Jesus.

- There is nothing wrong with trying to be relevant, but we need to understand that there is a BOLD line between being trendy, and then completely disfiguring the message of Jesus. We can’t expect to bring any change to the world when we don’t look any different from it. I’m a firm believer that Jesus came to reclaim culture and not abolish it, but this doesn’t mean we need to water down His message so that it’s easier to swallow.

5. Telling people that “God will never give you anything you can’t handle.”

- Why should we stop saying this? Because it’s a lie… We’ve completely twisted 1 Corinthians 10:13 as this verse is pointing towards temptation, and even then it states God will be there if things get too tough. The reality is that God just might give us things we can’t handle so that we will gaze towards him for the extra help. Mind blowing right? Realize that not everything is going to go the way you plan, think, or hope. Sometimes stuff is going to hit the fan, and in order for you to get through it you are going to NEED to rely on God’s comfort, peace, and understanding. We weren’t meant to do life alone.

To succeed in life, you need three things:

a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone.

• Too many bottles of hand lotion around? Make sure you keep one near your kitchen sink. Put some on your hands before you put on the rubber gloves, makes them easier to slip on and also moisturizes your hands at the same time. If you don’t use rubber gloves, then just apply after you wash the dishes.

HATTIE SHILLINGS You can always find recipes for leftover turkey--so here’s some to use up that leftover ham from your Christmas Dinner

Ham Casserole

1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup 2 cups cubed or shredded ham 3 cups cooked macaroni 1/2 can milk • Use an empty coffee can for an emergency light. Fill half full of 3/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese 1/4 cup dried bread crumbs sand, place a large diameter candle into the sand. Replace the lid, then wrap with reflective tape. Keep in the trunk.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a casserole dish, combine the ham, macaroni, cheese, soup and milk.

• Instead of using a spray and a streaky cloth, use only newspaper to Mix together well. Bake, covered, at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Uncover, top with the bread crumbs, and bake, uncovered for 10 more minutes. clean off your mirrors and windows for a streak-free finish.

• Remove Bugs from Windshield: Mix baking soda with warm water to make a paste. Spread the paste over your windshield for fifteen minutes. Then wipe or spray off with a hose.

• Bleach: Extend Life of Flowers in Vase: Add a few drops of bleach to vase water to prevent the build-up of the slime caused by bacteria. It works just like chlorine in a swimming pool.

• Kitchen Dish Soap Flea-Killing Dog Shampoo: Kitchen dish soap (not dish detergent) can double as dog shampoo for its flea killing abilities.

• Coke: Remove Blood Stains from Clothing: Soak the stain in coke until the stain is dissolved, then wash the clothing as usual. Wash before the coke dries, though.

• Honey: Remove Blemish Overnight: Have a blemish you need to get rid of by tomorrow? Put a dab of honey on the blemish and cover it up (it’s best to use a Band-Aid) and the honey’s natural antibacterial properties will clean out the bacteria by the morning.

• Wax Paper: Clean Can Opener Gears: Run a few small strips of wax paper through the can opener to clean out of the bits and pieces that have built up in the gears throughout the year. The wax will also rub off on the gears to protect for future use as well.

Ham and Beans

1 pound dry great Northern beans salt and pepper to taste 1/2 pound cooked ham, diced 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 small onion, diced 1 tablespoon dried parsley 1/2 cup brown sugar Rinse beans in a large pot; discard shriveled beans and any small stones. Add 8 cups of cold water. Let stand overnight or at least 8 hours. Drain and rinse beans.

Return beans to pot and add ham, onion, brown sugar, salt, pepper, cayenne and parsley and water to cover. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 1 1/2 to 2 hours, until beans are tender. Add more water if necessary during cooking time.

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup

3 1/2 cups peeled and diced potatoes 1/3 cup diced celery 1/3 cup finely chopped onion 3/4 cup diced cooked ham 3 1/4 cups water 2 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules

1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste 1 tsp. ground white or black pepper, or to taste 5 tablespoons butter 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 cups milk

Combine the potatoes, celery, onion, ham and water in a stockpot. Bring to a boil, then cook over medium heat until potatoes are tender, about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in the chicken bouillon, salt and pepper.

In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat. Whisk in flour with a fork, and cook, stirring constantly until thick, about 1 minute. Slowly stir in milk as not to allow lumps to form until all of the milk has been added. Continue stirring over medium-low heat until thick, 4 to 5 minutes.

Stir the milk mixture into the stockpot, and cook soup until heated through. Serve immediately.

Penny Pinchers Remove Bumper Sticker: Spread mayonnaise on the bumper sticker and let sit for at least thirty minutes. Then, rub the sticker off with a towel, leaving a clean bumper!

Tin Foil Ball: Replace Dryer Sheets Permanently: Instead of using a dryer sheet ball up one or a few sheets of tin foil and toss it in the dryer. It removes the static electricity from your clothes and one can last up to a year.

Polish Leather Shoes: Use the inside of a banana peel to give shoes a professional and natural shine that will last for quite some time.

Cure Athlete’s Foot: Pour mouthwash on cotton balls and then swab your feet. The alcohol will disinfect the bacteria completely if you continue this for a week or so.

Clean BBQ Grill: Mix a cup of baking soda with half a cup water to make a paste. Dip your brush into the paste and scrub the grill. The caked on pieces and black residue will come off much quicker and using baking soda is much safer and cheaper than using cleaning chemicals.

How to “regift”

It's the day after Christmas and you're probably wondering how you'll get rid of all the terrible gifts you've collected--the gizmo you'll never use, the book you'll never read, the sweater you wouldn't be caught dead wearing...there's got to be someone with an upcoming birthday.

Yes, I'm talking about regifting, the act of taking a gift you received, but don't want and giving it to someone else.

1. Avoid perishables.

Next Christmas, that food basket will be a collection of moldy crackers, rancid cheese, and outdated muffin-mix. Unless you're going to claim it's vinegar, best to avoid beverages with a funny smell and inch of sediment on their bottle's bottom.

2. Avoid out-of-date/extinct products.

Unless your giftee is an avid collector, avoid articles of clothing, music and electronic gear of decades past. Chances are your recipient will know you originally received that home BETA video recorder in 1988.

3. Avoid dead giveaways.

For example, never regift monogrammed items...unless you have a plan to explain why your initials should be emblazoned on their bathrobe. Promotional items from your company's "fun day" are also bad choices.

4. When you regift make sure you rewrap. (with recycled or "green" wrapping paper, of course).

The gift should be in its original condition (i.e. unused and in original box). Then make sure it is covered in non-tattered or faded paper. Nothing says this has been sitting in the bottom of my closet like disheveled wrapping paper.

5. If you are going to regift, be sure you know who gave you what. Keep track in a notebook or computer file. Yes, it's nerdy, but you'll be happy you did. Nothing is quite as awkward as regifting to the person who gave you the gift in the first place, especially if that original giver is a grim-faced and resentful relative. You know, the one with a sense of humor akin to a dead fish?

Dryer Sheet Lint Brush: You already know that dryer sheets remove lint in the dryer. Well, it can do the same thing out of the dryer, too. When you’re in a fix, use a dryer sheet. It works just as well as a lint brush, and if you like the scent, it’s an added bonus.

Homemade Never Ending Dryer Sheets $1.30

What you need: A container with an airtight lid (grabbed out of my pantry) 4 sponges cut in half ($1.00 for a 4pk at the dollar store) 1 cup of your favorite fabric softener ($0.30 worth of fabric softener) 2 cups water (free from tap) What To Do: Mix the water and fabric softener into a plastic container.

Add the cut sponges so they can soak in the mixture.

When ready to use, squeeze the excess liquid from 1 sponge and place into the dryer with your wet clothes.

Run the dryer cycle as normal. Once complete place the now dry sponge back into the container of liquid for use next time...

Matthew's Gospel tells us that after hearing about the birth of Jesus, Herod "was frightened" . Herod understands that this child is going to be a new ruler for the Jewish people. Since Herod has already been set up by Rome as the Jewish leader in Judah, that is not something that he's welcoming. See, Herod's got the power and no one, definitely not some drooling infant, is going to take it from him.

So how bad does he want to maintain his vice-like grip on authority? Um, enough to massacre "all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old" (2:16). Luckily for Jesus, he and his family get out of Bethlehem just in time. Of course, we can't say the same for all the other children.

BUCHANAN TO OBAMA

Barack says we need to have a conversation about race in America. .. Fair enough. But this time, it has to be a two-way conversation.

White America needs to be heard from, not just lectured to.... This time, the Silent Majority needs to have its convictions, grievances and demands heard. And among them are these: First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks.

It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known. Jeremiah Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.

Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the '60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the AfricanAmerican community into the mainstream. Governments, businesses and colleges have engaged in discrimination against white folks -- with affirmative action, contract set-asides and quotas -- to advance black applicants over white applicants. Churches, foundations, civic groups, schools and individuals all over America have donated their time and money to support soup kitchens, adult education, day care, retirement and nursing homes for blacks.

We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude??

Barack talks about new 'ladders of opportunity' for blacks. Let him go to Altoona ? And Johnstown, and ask the white kids in Catholic schools how many were visited lately by Ivy League recruiters handing out scholarships for 'deserving' white kids...? Is white America really responsible for the fact that the crime and incarceration rates for African-Americans are seven times those of white America ? Is it really white America 's fault that illegitimacy in the African-American community has hit 70 percent and the black dropout rate from high schools in some cities has reached 50 percent?

Is that the fault of white America or, first and foremost, a failure of the black community itself?

As for racism, its ugliest manifestation is in interracial crime, and especially interracial crimes of violence. Is Barack Obama aware that while white criminals choose black victims 3 percent of the time, black criminals choose white victims 45 percent of the time?

Is Barack aware that black-on-white rapes are 100 times more common than the reverse, that black-on-white robberies were 139 times as common in the first three years of this decade as the reverse?

We have all heard ad nauseam from the Rev. Al about Tawana Brawley, the Duke rape case and Jena . And all turned out to be hoaxes. But about the epidemic of black assaults on whites that are real, we hear nothing.

Sorry, Barack, some of us have heard it all before, about 40 years and 40 trillion tax dollars ago. This needs to be passed around because, this is a message everyone needs to hear!!! I'm for a better America, I am Not racist, Not violent, Just not silent anymore.

A German's View on Islam

This is by far the best explanation of the Muslim terrorist situation I have ever read. His references to past history are accurate and clear. Not long, easy to understand, and well worth the read. The author is Dr. Emanuel Tanya, a well-known and well-respected psychiatrist.

A man, whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism.

'Very few people were true Nazis,' he said, 'but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.'

We are told again and again by 'experts' and 'talking heads' that Islam is the religion of peace and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the specter of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.

The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honor-kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.

The hard, quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the 'silent majority,' is cowed and extraneous.

Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant.. China 's huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.

And who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were 'peace loving'?

History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our powers of reason, we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points: Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence.

Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don't speak up, because like my friend from Germany , they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun..

Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late.

As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts--the fanatics who threaten our way of life.

Lastly, anyone who doubts that the issue is serious, is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand.

Now Islamic prayers have been introduced into Toronto and other public schools in Ontario, and, yes, in Ottawa too while the Lord's Prayer was removed (due to being so offensive?). The Islamic way may be peaceful for the time being in our country until the fanatics move in. And we are silent.......

Well, you'll love this one: I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist.

I noticed his D.D.S. diploma on the wall, which bore his full name.

Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 30-odd years ago.

Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on, way back then?

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought.

This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate.

After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Morgan Park High School . ”Yes. Yes, I did. I'm a mustang,” he gleamed with pride.

“When did you graduate?” I asked.

He answered, “In 1975. Why do you ask?”

“You were in my class!” I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely.

Then, that ugly, old, bald, wrinkled faced, fat, gray-haired, decrepit, thoughtless man asked, ”What subject did you teach?”

- Panties and a bra hand me downs 2 sizes too small my granny was cheap - Pj's with a pic of a cow with very large cow udders in the middle of the shirt. Not only was it the worse, they were the ugliest things I'd ever seen. Needless to say they went back to the store.

- A family member (who really doesn't like me that much) gave me a sweater that was about four times too small for me and was her sweater and I knew that because she had worn it at Thanksgiving (we had pictures) and it still smelled of her perfume. She then took the opportunity to go on and on in front of the family about the fact it didn't fit me (I am a plus size woman). As graciously as possible I told her I was SURE it would fit her and she should take it.

I bought a bunch of stuff, over $150, & I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of $40. I told her I didn't request a cash back & to delete it.

She said I'd have to take the $40 because she couldn't delete it. I told her to call a supervisor.

Supervisor came & said I'd have to take it! I said NO! Taking the $40 would be a cash advance against my Discover & I wasn't paying interest on the cash advance!!!!! If they couldn't delete it then they would have to delete the whole order.

So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order & rescan everything!

The second time I looked at the electronic tab before I signed & a cash-back of $20 popped up. At that point I told the cashier & she deleted it.

The total came out right. the cashier agreed that the electronic pad must be defective. (yeah, right!)

Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad wasn't defective because she NEVER offered me the $40 at the beginning.

Can you imagine how many people went through before me & at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed?

Just to alert everyone. My coworker went to the store last week.

She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and didn't give her a receipt.

She asked the cashier for a receipt and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her.

My coworker didn't look at her receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for $20 cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK! My coworker called the store who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her it was a new scam. The cashier will key in that you asked for cash back and then hand it to her friend who is the next person in line.

Please, please, please check your receipts right away when using credit or debit cards!

I am adding to this.... My husband and I were at the store and paying with a credit card. When my husband went to sign the credit card signer, he just happened to notice there was a $20 cash back added. He told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back and she said this machine has been messing up and she canceled it.

We didn't think anything of it until we read this email.

I wonder how many "seniors" have been, or will be, "stung" by this one????

Growing Up In Harriman (1930-1945)

Part XII - Back to the beginning: Slovakia

I remember very little in regard to my uncles and aunts as prior to 1940 all had moved to other areas such as Indiana and Chattanooga to obtain jobs.

Uncle Steve died in 1929 shortly after the big flood that almost destroyed Oakdale and Harriman. He worked for the railroad and was trapped in a railroad telegraph tower at Oakdale during the flooding.

After being rescued he was admitted to a hospital and died from encephalitis at the young age of 28.

Aunt Mary Agnes died in 1931 from acute rheumatic fever / acute endocarditis at the age of 36. She was the mother of cousin Edward (Bodie) Reid.

The 1930 national census shows grandpa, my father Pete, aunt Mary Agnes, aunt Catherine and cousin Bodie as the ones remaining on Oakdale Mountain. Uncles George and Frank had moved to Indiana and uncle Mike now lived in Chattanooga.

The 1940 national census lists only grandpa John Semanick and cousin Edward (Bodie) Reid living in the old family homestead. This census reveals that aunts Annie and Catherine must have also moved to Indiana. By 1942 cousin Bodie had joined the army, which left grandpa all alone. Grandpa died (age 78) from pernicious anemia / chronic myocarditis in 1943. Bodie died (age 54) from metastatic carcinoma in 1974.

Also listed in the 1940 census were grandma Mattie Thornburg, my mother Ruby and myself. Mom left in early 1940 to seek work in Dayton, Ohio. In 1945 my mother finally sent for me to come to Dayton and live with her. By this time she had married Frank Bullins a former resident of Harriman.

Grandma Mattie remained in Harriman.

Other than myself only a few of the original family (my generation) are still alive. Cousin Theresa (age 87) resides in Chattanooga. Cousin Thomas Dicken (age 79) resides in Oakdale and is married to the former Rose Norris. My half-sister Agnes Anne (age 79) resides in Indiana and half-brother Carl (age 70) is also in Indiana.

Memories of the early days included hearing the locals (Shundak, Homoly, Semanick) who had homes on Oakdale Mountain near grandpa’s farm. They spoke a strange language among themselves and a distinct different dialect compared to the southern drawl we spoke in our Harriman neighborhood. I was one of those who had a southern drawl and often wondered why those folks sounded so different.

Later in life I learned those folks including grandpa were immigrants from a faraway country called Austro-Hungary. As a child not knowing where that was, I often wondered how they got to Oakdale Mountain. As I grew older I was told that grandpa had come from Czechoslovakia and that my heritage was Czechoslovakian. In January 1993 the country was finally divided to form the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic.

The old country was never mentioned during my many visits to grandpa’s farm. Only after grandpa died and all my aunts and uncles left for other areas did I learn of this European connection. Much later in life I decided to follow through with the research of my heritage.

I have visited Slovakia four times since 1998. I located the small village of Olsov, the original home of my grandfather and found distant relatives living there. The highlight during my four visits to Olsov was going to the nearby pastures and talking to the shepherds. My great-great-great grandfathers were all shepherds in these same areas dating back to the early 1800’s.

During these trips I found facts concerning my heritage that cleared up the many questions my family could never answer.

The immigrant family names I have mentioned in these articles came to a strange country, speaking little or no English and asked for no handouts. These folks added much to the local economy and left a heritage for me to be proud of.

Rockwood Memories

Holidays

As I write this column, it is a few days before Thanksgiving. I am already thinking about the Thanksgiving turkey, ham, sweet potatoes, desserts and feeling good. This being Tennessee, we don't have a Currier and Ive's snow scene outside the window, or no Jack Frost graffiti on the window pane. We will have to wait a while for that. But the nights are getting cold and crispy and it is good to be inside and out of it. And since the dawn of time, in almost every culture, we've countered these dark short days of winter with some kind of celebration, whether it be Christmas or Hanukkah, almost all involving miraculous light. And so we defy the cold and the dark. We refuse to grant winter the victory, reminding her with our candles, glittering decorations and crackling fires, that light and life are not quenched and that her icy gloomy days are numbered.

We gather our family close to us and serve the hearty, rich foods that warm us body and soul. This is a time to listen closely as wishes are made, one by one, and to secretly write them down and to slip and satisfy them before the traffic and the weather gets too bad. This is a time to whisper a prayer of thanks for health, for love, for food and shelter, or if you lack these things, to remember that life itself is a blessing and spring will come again, spring always comes again. It is a miracle the way that our blue planet, just a ball of rock, just warm and wet enough to support our lives. The animals know to migrate or burrow down snug in the earth; we light fires and put on warm coats and survive somehow.

I thought of these things actually a few years ago around Christmas time when I came back from Crossville and neared Rockwood from the top of the mountain. The stars sparkled above me and the city lights glittered beneath me. At the foot of this beautiful mountain with its Christmas Star shining so brightly, visible for miles around, a town was planted. Its' street lamps and decorated streetlights and houses were burning like campfire embers in the gloom, tiny against the darkness of the night but comforting nonetheless.

It would be nice to see a white Christmas. I do remember a few in Rockwood. We had some great Christmas parades with Santa riding in the old Molyneaux Chevrolet a few times. I couldn't wait to see the new Columbia bicycles at the Western Auto Store and the Schwinn bikes at Mr. Hickey's place.

And the "Dime" stores were loaded with toys. Remember the candy bins at the dime stores?

The "apple and orange" matinees are probably a thing of the past too. And those wonderful animated Christmas figurines and scenery must have taken days to put in window at Wright's Jewelers. We would usually walk to the Presbyterian Church across from the High School on Christmas Eve to see Santa and get our "treat". My dad and I, (after I got old enough) would lag behind and go back home for a while to make sure Santa had arrived for my younger brother and sisters. He never let us down either. My dad had a model train collection and was well known for it. Every year instead of a pony that I hoped for, I would get more model train accessories. I always wondered, when I was a child how come this always happens. Whatever your family's celebration-tradition this time of year, enjoy it, take pictures, tell stories, play music. This is the time for it .

And the week, along with the Christmas and New Year's weeks will be loaded with football games.

Here are a couple of comments that I received couple of years ago from a couple of faithful readers.

Bob Archey commented on the Rockwood-Spring City "Iron Man Game"" I would agree on the game as it was one of the finest I had ever seen. I had some friends on the Bulldog team that sad day they got their "cans" beat. However there is one little thing that enabled "PeeWee "Anderson to make that catch. He had been in a wreck on Post Oak Road the previous week and severely damaged the index and ring finger on his right hand. The next day when we were in school after the game were all congratulating him, he laughed and said "Thanks to his secret weapon" is the reason he made the catch, and he held up his two taped fingers., I'll give him an A + for one of thee greatest catches in high school that I have ever seen."

J. C. Cate also wrote," Who was the coach at Spring City at the time. I know that Homer Rice was there in the 1950's.. He went on to fame at Georgia Tech and in the professional ranks. I think he coached the 1950 team that had Bobby Brengle at tailback. I am not sure how long Rice was at Spring City. It is also worth noting that when Brengle played and punted for UT, that Johnny Majors was a backup. Majors never punted at UT as long as Brengle was there." J..Cate Thanks J. C. you are correct. Coach Rice coached at Cincinnati as head football coach and later at Rice University. He was also an assistant at Oklahoma, Ky. and athletic director at North Carolina.

His longest tenure was at Ga. Tech where he served as athletic director from 1980 to 1997.

Mr. Hotshot

Three friends married women from different parts of the country.

The first man married a woman from the North. He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away. The second man married a woman from the West. He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table. The third man married a girl from the South. He ordered her to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some difficulty when he pees.

1. Begin with gratitude. Before you begin handing out the gifts and tearing in to them, take a moment to reflect on all of your blessings since last Christmas.

2. Set a budget. If you know exactly how much you are going to spend this Christmas, then shopping becomes much easier.

3. Release expectations. Allow this Christmas season to be what it is without expectations or hopes for perfection.

4. Keep it simple. Part of releasing expectations is simplifying your Christmas season. If you over-schedule yourself with activities, shopping, and travel, you will be stressed and will miss out on the peace and beauty of the season.

5. Spend time in nature. Wherever you live, in a cold or warm climate, spend time outside absorbing the natural smells, sounds, and the climate of December/Christmas.

6. Listen to beautiful music. Everyone has their favorite holiday music, and it creates background mood for the holidays. c.

7. Create and sustain traditions. Traditions during the holidays make us feel connected to one another and to something larger than ourselves.

8. Entertain without perfection. Sometimes we avoid inviting friends over during the holidays unless everything is perfect — the right meal, the house completely decorated and cleaned, a gift purchased. Let that go and enjoy spontaneous get-togethers to share a meal or simply some time together.

9. Light candles. The glow of candlelight creates magic and warmth. Light them at dinner, during a bath, on the mantle.

10. Buy gifts mindfully. Don’t purchase a gift just for the sake of having something to give.

11. Bring nature inside. As you decorate for the season, bring some of the beauty from the outside into your home. Start with cut branches and holly berries.

12. Go caroling. Print off some Christmas carols from the Internet. Brew up some hot chocolate or mulled cider and get friends to go with you.

13. Wrap creatively. Instead of buying more wrapping paper, get creative. Collect all of the paper you have from last year and use it first. Use recyclable brown paper bags and tie them with bright ribbon or raffia string. Use burlap or fabric pieces to wrap up round or small gifts. Here are some more ideas.

14. A baking party. Set aside a morning with family or a couple of friends, and enjoy the pleasures of baking together.

15. Plan something together as a family to help or offer hope to others during the holidays. Adopt a family, serve in a soup kitchen or food bank, visit shut-ins.

16. Create simple, healthy meals. From Thanksgiving until the New Year, create simple and healthy meals to keep your eating choices balanced.

17. Send a letter or gift to a soldier. Imagine being in Iraq or Afghanistan this Christmas, away from loved ones and the comforts of home.

18. Rediscover meaning and purpose. As things begin to slow down in the days before Christmas and the week after, take some time to reexamine your own life to determine what is truly meaningful and important to you. Define and uncover your passion and purpose to begin the New Year with a fresh perspective.

19. Write a love letter. One of the most meaningful gifts you can give is a hand-written letter expressing your love and gratitude to your spouse/beloved, your parents, your children, or a treasured friend. Take time and thoughtful care in expressing your feelings, writing on beautiful paper, and wrapping your gift. It will never be forgotten.

20. Reach out to someone lonely. If you know someone alone or lonely this holiday season, connect with them. Invite them over for a meal or include them in a family occasion. The holidays can be very sad for many people, and you can bring a ray of light into their lives.

21. Take a drive or a walk. Get in the car and take a drive just to look at the holiday lights and decorations. Or simple walk around your neighborhood.

22. Make Christmas Day last. Instead of ripping into gifts and rushing through the morning, open gifts one-at-a-time. Enjoy each person’s pleasure of giving and receiving.

There were three in the bed (unfortunately) Sleeping used to be the bane of my existence. I felt like I was missing out on valuable life experiences every minute I wasted unconscious. I never took naps. I stayed up late, trying to milk every precious second from the day. I don’t know what was wrong with me. These days, I’ve wizened up and now I love to sleep. It’s often the best part of my day, which is only a little depressing.

Unfortunately, sleep doesn’t love me back. Maybe there’s just no room for sleep when there are three people squeezed into our queen-size bed. Maybe sleep is a little put-off by the fact that my daughter, Molly, lies horizontally across the top of the bed and steals our pillows. Maybe sleep isn’t a fan of that tiny snoring sound that Molly makes from the hours of 10pm to sunrise.

“The Big Untruth”

Sometimes a lie is told so incredibly well that even those perpetrating it believe it as truth. Such is the case with stock market averages. The “average” returns reported by financial companies are not reality. They’re just smoke and mirrors. The sad part is that I think most of the folks in the financial industry don’t understand what I’m about to tell you. And if they do, shame on them.

Here’s the story. Most stock market indexes, as well as most mutual funds, tout their average returns over given periods of time – one year, three years, five years and lifetime. They post them on their fact sheets. They share them with the media. It’s what many financial professionals preach to their clients.

“Yes, Mr. Client, the S&P 500 has returned an average of 10.64% over the last 20 years, even when you include the terrible results of both the tech crash and the credit crisis.”

That statement may be factually true, but in reality it’s very misleading and basically worthless.

Why? Because… There is a huge difference between the average return and the actual return within an account. To illustrate, I’m going to ask you a question, a question that at first glance seems ridiculously simple. But the answer to this question could be one of the most powerful concepts, you must understand, in order to take control of your financial future. Here it is. If a person invests $1,000 into an account, and this account experiences a negative-50-percent return in year one and a positive50percent return in year two, how much money would be in the account at the end of the second year? Think, about it for a second. The average return is zero, right? Year 1 (-50%)…Year 2 + 50% = 0% Average… Well, if the average return is zero percent, then wouldn’t ending value be equal to its beginning value of $1,000? Sorry… Not even close. The average return may be zero percent, but the actual return is negative 25%! What? How can that be? Let me illustrate using the numbers. If a person invest $1,000 into an account, and in the first year it experiences a negative-50-percent return, then that $1,000 drops to $500, correct? $1,000 less 50% = $500… Now, if that actual account has a 50-percent gain in year two, it would increase back up to $750… $500 plus 50% = $750 So, at the end of two years, even though the average return is zero percent, the account actually experienced a 25-% loss. And just so you don’ think I rigged this equation in my favor; the results would be exactly the same if the gain was in year one and loss was in year two.

How can this be true? If the average return is zero, how can the ending value be significantly less?

Why aren’t these values the same? It’s very simple: The “actual” return and the “average” return will NEVER equal one another anytime you have to factor in a negative number. In other words, if you ever have to factor in a negative year’s result (the year in which a market went down), then the average return (the number often boasted to the public) and the actual return (the amount that an account or fund actually experienced) will never be the same. So, since markets do experience negative years, the averaging method just doesn’t work. It will never work. It’s not an accurate picture of how a market or an account has really performed; unless, of course, every year during that period has experienced a positive return. This may help you understand why your 401(k),IRA or brokerage account balance doesn’t necessarily reflect the average gains you’ve seen reported by the media.

Remember two things, 1. “Don’t lose Money” and number 2. “Don’t forget number 1.”

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question.

Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: ”How heavy is this glass of water?”

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

She continued, “The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything.”

It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses. As early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night. Remember to put the glass down!

The Value of Time

Imagine there is a bank that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use.

What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course!!!

Each of us has such a bank. Its name is TIME. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours.

There is no going back. There is no drawing against the “tomorrow”. You must live in the present on today’s deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and success!

The clock is running. Make the most of today.

Roane County’s History The year 1929 was one of the blackest in the history of Roane County.

The Great Emory River Flood wiped out large portions of Harriman including the manufacturing industries along the river.

Just after the flood, a blight struck the peach orchards. Within three years the Roane County peach industry was dead.

The year 1929 also brought the Great Depression and that, among other things, led to the demise of the Roane Iron Company in January, 1930. Unemployment in the county was rampant.

Many moved away. Others starved. But most persevered. On the horizon was the Tennessee Valley Authority, World War II, and the Manhattan Project.

Senator Yager receives “Legislator of the Year Award” Senator Ken Yager (R-Kingston) was recognized recently for his work in the State Senate by the District Attorneys General Conference. Yager received the award at a meeting of the group attended by district attorneys statewide.

Yager has sponsored numerous anti-crime bills during his legislative tenure. He also has sponsored several major bills to address prescription drug abuse in Tennessee.

“We greatly appreciate the tireless work and steadfast commitment of Senator Yager to first understand, and then develop workable solutions, to some very difficult crime problems,” said James W. Kirby, Executive Director of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference.

In accepting the award, Yager praised the work of the district attorneys. "This is certainly an honor and most cherished award, as I have tremendous respect for our state's district attorneys," he said.

"It has been an honor to work with them and I look forward to continuing our efforts to make our streets safer and to address some of the most pressing public safety problems in Tennessee."

Can you block your personal images on Google Maps?

Yes, you can! As it turns out, there is a way to prevent strangers from seeing your home online through Google Maps.

Many Americans don’t realize it, but Google actually has vehicles driving around the United States taking what are called “street view” pictures. If your home can be seen from a public street, there’s a good chance it’s on Google Maps.

How Google Maps Threatens Your Privacy If want to find out whether your home is on Google Maps, simply go to Google Maps and type in your address. When the map appears you might see a small stick figure on the left side of the screen.

Drag that stick figure to your street, and your house – and others – will appear. (Note: If the street is not highlighted in blue on the map, then your house and street have not been photographed.)

This can be a major problem for privacy because the Google picture can show strangers a great deal of your home and your life. When Fox and Friends contributor Kurt “the Cyber Guy” Knutsson went to Google Maps he discovered something bothersome — the inside of his garage and its contents, because he had left the garage door open the day the Google car drove down his road.

That’s not all that Knutson saw on Google. Google had taken a picture of his cars.

New “Heavy Metal” Lock Systems Designed For A New Lawless America “You could see our license plates plain as day,” Knutson said. Knutson’s discovery indicates that details of your private life, and information that could harm you, can show up on Google Maps.

Google claims it blurs out license plates and individuals before it posts pictures to street view, although it’s obvious that doesn’t always happen.

How to Hide Your House The bad news is that there is no way to keep your address off of Google Maps. The good news is that you can get Google to blur out your property so Google Maps users will not see it. Here’s the process which is outlined at Google.

How to get your property blurred: • Go to Google Maps and type in your address • Bring up the street view of your property • Look to the bottom right hand corner of the screen you should see an Icon Labeled: “report a problem.”

• Click on “report a problem.”

• You will get a page labeled “report inappropriate street view.”

• Look for the words “Privacy Concerns” and click on them.

• If you want your house blurred, click on “my house.” Then choose the option: “I have a picture of my house and would like it blurred.”

• Adjust the image and show Google which part of the photo needs blurred.

• Type the verification code at the bottom of the page into the box provided and click submit.

• Check back in a few days to see if the image has been blurred.

You can also get license plates and faces blurred. For example, if you want a picture of your business on Google Maps but don’t want the license plate number of your vehicle parked in front on Google, you can get that blurred. You can also get your car blurred out as well if you want.

Google wants you to report license plate numbers and faces that aren’t blurred so it can blur them out.

This process does seem to work, and it is free.

Google is Watching You The amount of information Google collects through Google Maps and posts online is frightening.

Not every address is included in Google Street View, though. Addresses in many rural areas are not on street view. Although, chances are that your home is on it if you live in a suburban or urban area.

The Arts Council of Roane County (ACRC) has announced that it will be holding its second annual Roane Open Art Show on December 13-15, 2013 in the building formerly known as the RCMC Annex located at 431 N. Roane St. in Harriman. The Council has issued a Call for Artists to participate in the show, which is open to all local visual artists and fine craftspeople and will be free to the public. The show will be judged by Kingston artist Jan Hill and awards will be made in several student and adult categories along with a Best in Show grand prize.

Faster checkouts. More variety.

Bringing a Wal-Mart to a college campus seems like a fantastic idea. Everyone will benefit from this. Or at least they would if the Wal-Mart was not being built on land that was used for 7 different factories.

Before 1970 there was no regulations for dumping wastes, therefore, all the toxins from these old factories are in the land that University of Tennessee is currently using for the future campus Wal-Mart/Publix. Maybe it will have no effect, or maybe these toxins will get mixed up into the food and all of the "future leaders of America" students from The University of Tennessee will be effected by this not so great idea.

Ironically UT started construction on a brand new University Center. This construction began roughly a year ago and should be completed by 2015. The construction on Wal-Mart began three months ago and will be completed by August; that is less than a year of construction. Why has this process been so fast? Wal-Mart makes money. A new University Center does not.

It is funny how construction always begins with CON, that alone should be reason enough to quit tearing the earth apart.

The construction process has already began, but it is not completed, thus, it can still be stopped. I encourage everyone to write UT and share your thoughts on this “great idea."

WANDA: I was so sure there was another woman there somewhere that I started running all over the house looking. I ran up into the attic and searched, and down into the basement. Then I went through every closet and checked under all the beds. I kept this up until I had looked everywhere, and finally I became so exhausted that I just keeled over with a heart attack and died.

SYLVIA: Too bad you didn't look in the freezer -- we'd both still be alive.

TIPS FOR A WORN-OUT MOM

1. Lower your standards for cleanliness and order.

2. Did that? Lower them even more.

3. Your house will never look like a magazine spread, period. Embrace that.

4. No matter how many baskets you buy to contain toys, they will always be visible. Embrace the Toys ‘R Us/ frat house-chic decor....

5. You can never have too many Popsicle in the freezer. How many bad moods have been fixed by a simple Popsicle?

6. If you can’t change them, change your perspective. For example I read recently – probably on Satan’s website Pinterest – that toothpaste is great for cleaning things like faucets. So now when I go into the bathroom every day and see toothpaste splatter all over the bathroom faucet I think about how my children have done half the chore of cleaning for me. How considerate of them! Then I wipe it off while grumbling.

7. Those chores that no one ever wants to do. Decide if you would rather do it yourself, badger your child to it, or let it go. If you are confused about what to do, see Number 1 on this list.

8. No one cares what is stuffed under your child’s bed, why should you. Unless it is old food. In that case, you should get a dog.

9. If you have boys, your bathroom will always faintly stink like pee. Invest in some Febreeze and count down the days until they move out and you can go visit them and pee on their bathroom floor.

10. Don’t buy white furniture. Unless you enjoy screaming at your children every time they go near it.

11. However bad a situation might seem, one day it will be funny. I have a few for which I am eagerly awaiting for the funny to kick in. Any time now….

12. When your child is a young teen there will be nothing more embarrassing than your very existence. Use this to your advantage. Start planning early.

13. Do not paint any walls in your house with flat paint.

14. Be okay with letting your kids stumble sometimes. Whether that is turning in an assignment late because they didn’t do it or wearing an outfit so hideous you have trouble looking at them without laughing.

15. Noise cancelling headphones are great for blocking out whining, bickering and the endless episodes of Sponge Bob. 16. Socks do not have to match. Every day is Crazy Sock Day at my house, which is infinitely better than Crazy Mom Day. 17. The crayons will break and it is okay to throw them away rather then save them to make some sort of craft that involves the hair dryer. In fact, I give you permission to not feel guilty about all the crafts you know you will never do.

18. Your children will not die from eating the occasional hot dog or frozen pizza. And by occasional I mean more than you are really willing to admit.

19. If your children are driving you crazy arguing with each other, start an argument with them. Then your children will bond over their mutual hatred of you and be quiet.

20. Children do not appreciate top sheets or high thread counts. Buy neither.

21. Homework time is the worst time of the day. Help your kids by having a designated time and a quiet place to do homework. Preferably in a neighbor’s home.

22. Just say No to ironing.

23. Last, but not least, some chocolate and some really bad TV makes everything seem a little better.

The value of knowledge

A giant ship engine failed. The ship’s owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure but how to fix the engine.

Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a young.

He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship’s owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do.

After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something.

Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed!

A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand dollars.

“What?!” the owners exclaimed. “He hardly did anything!”

So they wrote the old man a note saying, “Please send us an itemized bill.”

The man sent a bill that read: Tapping with a hammer…… …… ……… $ 2.00 Knowing where to tap……… …… ……… $ 9,998.00 Ha
