By: CHRIS MASON - HARRIMAN CITY MAYOR **Some members of the Harriman Industrial Board toured the most of the buildings that the hospital occupies in preparation for their vacating in a little over a year. The buildings will be marketed and available for purchase as the hospital is able to move out of them. The buildings will be advertised to let the public know when they are available and the Industrial Board is currently working out the finer details how to effectively handle those transactions. They have discussed in meetings to target businesses that will be good for our city and as I have stated earlier, they have already had a tremendous amount of inquiries from businesses wanting to move here or start here. **I received a letter from the County Executive last month about the City of Harriman’s interest in working with the County and Roane State Community College to establish a small business incubator locally. We have an interest in entering into discussions with them to see how this may work out to help everyone in Harriman, the County and RSCC. This concept will help small business get started and get through the first year of business by minimizing mistakes that a lot of owners make at first. It will entice possible business owners to take that step, start a business, grow it and hopefully keep it local. Roane State has already done this in Cumberland County and it is a success thus far. **The work group that has been focusing on the site known as the old Paper mill has been feverishly working with the EPA to try and resolve concerns there. Andy Ables, Dick Evans and Buddy Holley continue to have phone meetings with them to see about possible uses for that area and cleanup possibilities. This will be very high on our priority list for the next couple of years. Thanks to that committee for the work that they have done and will do! **Update on the new LED traffic lights that we will be getting. The project is awaiting environmental approval in Nashville and we hope to bid the project in early January. We hope the new LED traffic lights will be installed by March. **Notice the new trash receptacles downtown, they were bought with grant money to enhance our downtown as well as the LED lights and pole banners. **The Christmas Home tour is quickly approaching and it will include the Princess Theater this year! If you purchase a ticket for the tour you will be allowed to get a “sneak peek” inside the theater. Be sure to look at www.princesstheater.blogspot.com for up to date pictures. **The Harriman Christmas Parade will be December 1st @ 7pm. Be sure to come out and start the Christmas season with us! **Remember to shop your local merchants as much as possible and we hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Christmas at Emory Gap Baptist Church I grew up attending Valley Chapel Methodist Church in Emory Gap until I was married, but sometimes, I’d wonder up the hill and visit the Emory Gap Baptist Church. Us kids didn’t know the difference in denominations back then, although I did know that the preacher at the Baptist church was a lot louder than the one at the Methodist. One Christmas season, I decided to attend the Baptist church. My Sunday School class had already drawn names, but I could live without getting a gift at their annual Christmas Program. I did, however, receive a Bible verse I was to memorize and recite at the program to be held on Christmas Eve. The big night finally came, and I sat on the front pew with the other small children who had a verse to recite. Mama and my Aunt Betty had walked with us to church to see their kids in the Christmas program. My palms were so sweaty through the whole thing. I was so scared, I thought I would pass out. But I patiently waited for them to call my name to jump and go to the front of the church, and recite my verse, just as I had practiced a hundred times. I could have said it backwards. I waited, and waited, and waited. Then they announced that was the end of the program. I was devastated. They had forgotten to call my name! I wouldn’t get to recite my verse! I was so disappointed, but way too bashful to let them know they had mistakenly left me out. My thoughts shifted though when they started handing out the presents everyone had gotten the person that they drew the name of. But wait, I had forgotten, I didn’t get to draw names, so I would not get a present like every child in the room would. Almost in tears, I watched as a dozen kids had their name called so they could run up and get their present. There was a lump in my throat so bad I couldn’t even swallow. I then watched an adult raise up a present, look at the card, and call my name. I had a present! I ran up to her and she handed it to me. I ran to Mama and excitedly yelled, “Mama, I got a present, and I wasn’t supposed to have gotten one!” Mama smiled and said she had gotten it for me because she didn’t want me to be the only kid there without a present. I was in Heaven! I tore the paper open, and there was the most beautiful coloring book I had ever seen. It also had a brand new box of crayons with it. I opened it and the first page I saw was a little girl in a flowered dress swinging on a swing that had the ropes covered in roses. That was the first page I colored. It was beautiful. I carefully tore it out of the book and proudly took it and gave it to Mama. I don’t know if Mama even remembers that night. But I know her thoughtfulness made for one of the best Christmas’ I’ve ever had.

Choosing a Christmas Tree
OK, you are ready for Christmas, but now you need a tree. How are you supposed to pick out a good one? Here are a few helpful hints to help you find the perfect tree. First, pick the location where you want to place the tree. This will help you pick the right one. If you are going to place it in a corner or against a wall, it does not need to be perfect on every side. If it is going in the center of the room you will want to make sure you check the whole tree thoroughly for any bad spots. Second, before you leave the house, measure the height of the ceiling in the room where you want to place the tree and the width of the area. It can be very deceptive when you are out looking at tree’s. What does not seem like a very big tree when you are outside, will be a monster when you get it in the house. Make sure that you measure the tree before you buy it both in height and width to make sure that it will fit. You can allow for about a 6” difference by the time that you trim the bottom and top for placing in a tree stand and setting up for your tree topper. Don't forget that when you get it home it is OK to trim it a bit to make it look it's best in the location that you choose. Just don't forget to put the trimmings into a trash bag or on newspaper so that any extra sap doesn't leak into carpeting or furniture. You can use the trimmings for decorations around the house, or if you have enough you can make a wreath.
Pearl Harbor Facts
The attack on Pearl Harbor occurred on December 7, 1941. The Japanese attacked the United States without warning. The attack lasted 110 minutes, from 7:55 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. A total of 2,335 U.S. servicemen were killed and 1,143 were wounded. Sixty-eight civilians were also killed and 35 were wounded. The Japanese lost 65 men, with an additional soldier being captured. Pearl Harbor is on the south side of the Hawaiian island of Oahu and is the home to a U.S. naval base. The attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into World War II.

ANNUAL HISTORIC CHRISTMAS TOUR 2011 Once again the Historic Carnegie Library will be featured on the annual Historic Christmas Tour sponsored by the Cornstalk Heights Community Organization. Tour dates are Saturday, December 10, and Sunday, December 11, 2011. Everyone is welcome to visit the Historic library and Gift Shop during the Christmas tour hours. The Historic Carnegie Library has now graced the City of Harriman for 100 years and served as a place of learning and enrichment “for the good of all,” not only for the city of Harriman but the surrounding area as well. The anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone was celebrated on September 27, 2009 and the actual opening day of this great historic building was celebrated on October 31, 2010. The Greek Revival Building’s interior with gilt embossed columns, lighted archways and decorative woodwork that defines the detailed workmanship of 1909 is displayed still today. Andrew Carnegie’s portrait graces the mantle above the fireplace, and the words “Carnegie Building” in the titled entry acknowledge the authenticity of the building. This historic building is also listed on the Register of Historic Buildings in Tennessee. This is a “must see” stop on the Christmas Tour. Although the architectural beauty of this historical building has not been altered, a wonderful asset has been added “for the good of all.” The building now has an ADA approved handicap access lift. The handicap entrance is located to the left of the main entrance. A covered ramp descends down to the entry door, and once inside the building, the lift is available for access to both the main library floor and the ground floor. The children’s department and a handicap restroom are on the ground floor. At last, everyone has access to this great historic library building. GIFT SHOP AT HISTORIC CARNEGIE LIBRARY Do your Christmas shopping at the Historic Carnegie Library during tour hours! While visiting the Historic Carnegie Library, guests will also have the opportunity to do some Christmas shopping. By Jerry Lemons To the good, generous, wonderful people of the U.S.A.: Let me introduce myself. I am the aunt of President Barack Hussein Obama. I am the President's father's sister. You have no doubt heard of me and of my struggle with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. They want to deport me as being an illegal alien. This letter is both an explanation and an appeal to you, the good and generous and wonderful people of Earth's greatest nation. After much soul-searching, I have decided that it is best if I tell you the truth about both my brother and me. Since the Immigration and Naturalization Service is going to announce it in a few days, I think it best that I tell you the truth beforehand. The reason I have kept my origin and place of birth secret for so long is that I did not want to harm my nephew--my little Bammy. (Excuse me for calling him that, but I can't help it. He may be President Obama to you, but to me he will always be my little Bammy.) It is true that I was not born in the United States. For many years it was believed I was born in Kenya in Africa. Well, that is not so. The truth is, I was born on the planet Bam Wam--as was Bammy's father. He came to Earth when he was a young man and settled in Kenya. I came to Earth a few years afterward. I lived with my brother in Kenya for a few years until he began traveling on business, the nature of which I am not at liberty to divulge. He got married, and he and his wife moved to different places. His business kept him on the move quite a bit. Little Bammy grew up in different places, among them in southeast Asia where he attended school. It has always puzzled me why Bammy is referred to as African-American. On the planet Bam Wam as well as in many places on Earth, descent is traced through the mother's line. This is true of many countries in Africa and southeast Asia. As everyone knows, little Bammy's mother is white, so Bammy is not African-American at all. Neither is his father, as he was born on the planet Bam Wam. When little Bammy's father lived in southeast Asia, I moved there. I was little Bammy's nanny; I actually took care of him more than anyone else. When his mother and father would go on extended trips, excursions and junkets, I alone took care of him. I still consider him my own little boy. I was the one who actually raised him. When Bammy was elected President I was able to come to America. Now I know that some say that I am an illegal alien because I stayed here in America and didn't leave when my visa expired. But I do not consider myself an illegal alien. An alien, yes--but illegal? No way. After all, my nephew is the President of the United States. I am the aunt of the most powerful person on Earth--and the leader of the free world. That should count for something. I simply don't understand why the Immigration and Naturalization Service is so intent on deporting me. It actually wants to deport me to the planet Bam Wam. Now I am not one totim Communication and commerce have been going on for quite awhile between Earth and Bam Wam. With the discovery and advent of hyper space-speed, actual contact was made, and it became possible to travel between Earth and Bam Wam. Of course, it is expensive to travel between the two planets, and few are able to afford it. My brother was employed as a courier and an ambassador of sorts, and he came to Earth, and eventually, through means which I am not at liberty to divulge, he managed to stay on Earth and settle in Kenya. A few years afterward, I was able, with the help of my brother, to come to Earth. Bam Wam is about the same size as Earth, but it is lacking in natural resources. Its population is about half of Earth's. Its distance from the sun is the same as the planet Mars. It is cold there most of the time, and it is really not a very hospitable place. The major resource and industry of Bam Wam is plastic. It specializes in producing plastic appendages--especially ears, lips and noses. I could tell you a funny secret about little Bammy's ears, but I better not. It would probably cause him much embarrassment and would provide his foes with ammunition they would be only too happy to use against him. Overall life is hard on Bam Wam. Many Bam Wamians dream of coming to Earth and living here. The U.S.A. is of course their first choice, but there are numerous difficulties in making the trip and it is expensive, and because of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, it is extremely difficult to enter the country, much less stay here. I consider myself one of the lucky ones, and even I may not be able to stay in the U.S. much longer. Can you imagine? I-- the aunt of the President of the United States--may be forced to leave this country. It is so wrong, so unjust. I am pleading with you, good and generous and wonderful people of the U.S.A. Don't let the Immigration and Naturalization Service deport me. Don't let it take me away from my little Bammy--or his children. In my opinion, it would be nothing less than a crime against humanity. That may sound extreme, but put yourself in my position and see if you don't agree with me. I am asking you to contact your Congress people and request that I be allowed to stay in the greatest nation on Earth, so that I can be near my little Bammy, and his children. Thank you from the bottom of my two stomachs. I wiggle my ears at you in everlasting thankfulness.

Aircraft in-flight emergencies were quite common and Chief Parker relied solely on his subordinates and I responded to most of these emergencies. I can’t remember one time when the chief responded, as he was quite comfortable monitoring the crash/fire radio in his office. He also had a nice, comfortable leather chair for relaxing during the noon hour break. One F-4 takeoff emergency was quite embarrassing for the pilot and his passenger, a Major General. Somehow the pilot forgot to turn the fuel selector valve to the proper position and immediately after takeoff the plane’s engine failed. Needless to say the aircraft crashed a few hundred yards off the end of the runway. No one was injured and minor damage occurred but I can imagine what happened to the pilot after everything settled down. Another F-4 incident occurred during a massive ramp refueling operation. A refueling nozzle became disconnected on an aircraft and the spraying fuel ignited. Fast response by our crash crews quickly extinguished the flaming fuel. Fortunately during this mass refueling operation we had a major crash truck and crew patrolling the area. Their alertness and quick thinking with a radio call for backup allowed other crash crews to respond. Very little damage occurred to the aircraft, but the maintenance and aircraft crew were certainly shaken. Every time one of the U-2 aircraft took off or landed our crash crews were always on runway standby alert. This particular aircraft had center fuselage landing wheels with wing tip outriggers. This meant that the aircraft had to be chased down the runway by assigned maintenance “chase crews” so that immediately after the aircraft stopped, the crews could affix outrigger stanchions under each wing tip. Each wing tip stanchion had wheels attached at the base and this allowed the aircraft to continue taxiing to the hangar. Each landing was always a touchy moment for responding crews. Little did I know at this time I would not be stationed here for very long. One day in late November 1967 I received a phone call from military assignments at Randolph AFB in Texas. The clerk said he was advising me that an new overseas assignment would be shortly forthcoming. I joked and asked “which part of Europe will I be assigned” and he quickly answered, “not Europe but Southeast Asia”. I told him I just returned from there and he stated that with my rank and air force specialty code, new air force policy stipulated two consecutive short tours, which meant another remote assignment. I then advised the young man that I would be going to base personnel and putting in retirement papers because I would definitely not go back to Southeast Asia. I hung up the phone and headed for the personnel office and filled out my application for retirement for July 1968. Needless to say I was very disappointed in the system but knew my family needed me more than Southeast Asia. This also meant turning down the rank of Chief Master Sergeant if I was selected in the meantime, but my family was more important than another stripe. (Continued)

Until a child tells you what they are thinking, we can't even begin to imagine how their mind is working...Little Zachary was doing very badly in math. His parents had tried every-thing...tutors, mentors, flash cards, special learning centers. In short, everything they could think of to help his math. Finally, in a last ditch effort, they took Zachary down and enrolled him In the local Catholic school. After the first day, little Zachary came home with a very serious look on his face. He didn't even kiss his mother hello. Instead, he went straight to his room and started studying. Books and papers were spread out all over the room and little Zachary was hard at work. His mother was amazed. She called him down to eat. To her shock, the minute he was done, he marched back to his room without a word, and in no time, he was back hitting the books as hard as before. This went on for some time, day after day, while the mother tried to understand what made all the difference. Finally, little Zachary brought home his report Card.. He quietly laid it on the table, went up to his room and hit the books. With great trepidation, His Mom looked at it and to her great surprise, Little Zachary got an 'A' in math. She could no longer hold her curiosity.. She went to his room and said, 'Son, what was it? Was it the nuns?' Little Zachary looked at her and shook his head, no.. “Well, then, was it the books, the discipline, the structure, the uniforms? What was it? It was used in this case as a sedative to somewhat dull the pain suffered on the cross. But the Lord refused to drink it. Myrrh was also one of the spices used in the wrapping of Christ's body at the time of His burial (Jn. 19:38-40).

You've probably heard the "Story of the Candy Cane." The candy cane is a beautiful Christmas object lesson with which to share the true meaning of Christmas. Hold up a candy cane and look at it. Here’s what you see.. "the white" - Jesus was pure and holy; He was without sin. Hebrews 4:15: For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. " The white is also a picture of how God washes our sins away and makes us white as snow when we trust in Jesus as our Saviour. Isaiah 1:18: ""Come now, let us reason together," says the Lord. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool." "the red stripes" - the red, of course, is a picture of the blood Jesus shed for each of us; the red stripes depict the stripes on His back as He was beaten Isaiah 53:5: "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. How many books of the Bible are named for women? For what "price" did Esau sell his birthright to his younger twin brother, Jacob? What did the lords of the philistines offer Delilah for revealing the secret of Samson's strength? In the Old Testament, who was Jezebel's husband? In the Bible, who did the sun and moon stand still before? Who is the only woman whose age is mentioned in the Bible?
Facts & myths about the wise men
First, let's examine some common misconceptions: 1. There were three wise men (magi) It is true that the Bible names three gifts. Second century artwork portrays two to four magi. Medieval artists depicted up to twelve. The Bible does not tell us the exact number. 2. They were kings We are familiar with the Christmas carol We Three Kings. It is true that the nature of their gifts, gold, frankincense, and myrrh suggests wealth. Who were the wise men? They were probably astronomers from Persia. In addition to being skilled in science of the heavens and stars, they were also learned in philosophy, natural science, and medicine. 3. They rode camels.. The Bible doesn't say what they rode. 4. The star they saw was in the East There is a familiar song, Star of the East. Actually, the star was in the West. The wise men were in the East when they saw the star. 5. They found Jesus in the manger. Mary, Joseph and the shepherds were also there - all on Christmas Day. The Bible teaches that the shepherds were the only ones to visit the manger on Christmas day. The wise men visited Jesus sometime later while they were living in a house.

Household Hints Smelly Sneakers: Simply fill knee-high stockings with unused litter, tie the ends and tuck them in overnight for a quick refresh. Add baby powder, too! Another refresher for smelly sneakers is to simply take a few teaspoons of baking soda and put in the center of a cotton cloth. Tie the cloth and rubber band the edges securely creating a baking soda sachet, which you put in the shoes overnight as well. These sachets can be used over and over in any kind of shoe. If you need to make a patch for your wallpaper, never cut out a piece. Always use a piece that you have torn by hand and be sure to tear toward the wrong side of the wallpaper. This will make the patch nearly invisible. Did you know that cold tea will clean woodwork? Give it a try! Grease stains on your carpet? Shake some cornstarch over the grease stain and let set there overnight or at least 8 hours. Vacuum. Cleaning Brass or copper--Wash with salt and buttermilk or vinegar and salt. To care for your aluminum, place tarnished pieces in large pan and cover with sour milk. Allow to remain overnight. This will make the ware as bright as new.

Green bean casserole
1 can cream of mushroom soup 4 cups cooked green beans 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/2 cup milk 1 1/3 cups French fried onions Mix soup, milk and pepper in 1 ½ quart casserole dish. Stir in beans and 2/3 cup of the fried onions. Bake for about 25 minutes at 350° Top with the remaining 2/3 cup fried onions and bake about 5 more minutes, until onions are lightly browned.
Broccoli Delight
20 oz frozen chopped broccoli 2 cups cooked rice 2 oz chopped pimientos, drained 1 cup finely chopped celery 1 cup sour cream ¼ teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper ½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese 1 can cream of mushroom soup or cream of celery or broccoli Cook broccoli as directed on package. Drain; combine with the cooked rice, pimientos, celery, sour cream, soup, salt, and pepper. Transfer to a 2-quart casserole; sprinkle cheese over top. Bake at 325° for 20-30 minutes, until heated through.
Scalloped Potatoes
4 potatoes, peeled, sliced 2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley 2 thick slices bacon, cooked, chopped ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese Salt and pepper Preheat oven to 350°. Butter a large casserole dish. Layer the bottom of the casserole dish with 1/3 of the potato slices. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Layer on 1/2 of the sliced onions, 1/2 cup of the Swiss cheese, layer on 1/2 of the bacon, 1/2 of the parsley and chives. Sprinkle with Parmesan. Repeat by layering on 1/3 of the potato slices, sprinkle again with salt and pepper. Layer the remaining sliced onions, 1/2 cup of the Swiss cheese, the remaining bacon, parsley and chives. Sprinkle with a Parmesan. Top with the remaining potato slices. Add the half and half. Dot the potatoes with the remaining 1 ½ Tbsp butter. Cover casserole with aluminum foil and bake in oven for one hour. Remove from the oven, remove foil, sprinkle on the remaining Swiss and Parmesan cheese. Return to the oven for an additional 30-40 minutes. 3 Tbsp butter 1 large onion, thinly sliced 1 Tbsp chopped fresh chives 8 oz grated Swiss cheese 2 ½ cups half-and-half

"Life Lessons Learned" By: Rita Webster
1. Paying at the register: Why do a lot of people wait until the very last item is rung up on a cash register before they start digging into their purse for the checkbook, debit card, credit card, cash, coupons, etc.? It drives me crazy! Please...have everything ready to pay when it's time to pay...not 5 minutes later. 2. Only one register: Why in Heaven's name does a giant supercenter like Wal-Mart have only one register where you can buy tobacco products? I have to stand in line for what seems like hours, behind 2-3 people with their shopping carts full, just so I can buy a pack of cigarettes. Ridiculous! 3. TV Ads: Why doesn't the burgers at fast-food places look as nice, and pretty, and big, and thick, and delicious, when I get them, as it shows on their TV ads? Mine always looks like it has been ran over by a Mac truck! I mean, if you're lucky, you might get one very small piece of lettuce, one very thin x-rayed tomato, one tiny pickle, and one little ring of onion, all thrown together in 2 seconds. Nothing like what it shows in their ads. 4. People talking: It really gets on my last nerve when people fill their conversations with words like: like..you know what I mean..You know what I'm saying.. you know... For example: I went to the store, you know what I'm saying, and like, you know, I couldn't believe you know what I mean, like, you know, there were so many people there, you know what I'm saying? Grrrr..... 5. Preaching at funerals: I go to church on Sundays to hear a preacher preach a sermon. I don't need to sit for an hour and hear one at someone's funeral. Speak a few words on the life of the dearly departed one and stop! Leave the preaching for church. ok?

Be cautious of renting lodging accommodations described in the ad or brochure as *rustic.* 4. Locate the emergency exits as soon as you check into your hotel room. 5. When in doubt, smile. 6. Underestimate when guessing an adult's age and weight. 7. Occasionally leave a quarter in the change return slot of a pay phone. Somebody always checks. 8. Keep an empty gas can in your car trunk. 9. Frame anything your child brings home on his first day of school. 10. Remember that cruel words deeply hurt and loving words quickly heal.
Christmas Giving
Christmas can really be a hectic time of year. All the kids can say is “I want”. Change their want to give. A few weeks before Christmas, have the kids go through their room and clean out any toys they do not play with anymore. These toys, we will put under the tree at Christmas. Santa will pick up the toys and give them to kids who need them when he leaves the presents for her. After Christmas, drop the toys off at a thrift store for donation.

Jesus’ Birthday Celebration Your family can make a new tradition for your Christmas celebration. The night before Christmas bake a birthday cake and let the kids decorate it for Jesus. In the morning after everyone is up, unwrap your presents as normal. After all the Christmas presents are opened, place one candle on the cake and light it. It is with regret that we inform you of the passing of J.T. Kerr of Rockford, TN. Kerr passed away October 7th. He was the founder of Kerr Auto Parts, and later Kerr Racing Equipment in Rockford. J.T. was the 1969 NASCAR Whelen All American Series State Champion, as he loved asphalt as well as dirt. In 1993, he was runner-up in the NASCAR Mid-America Point Series. J.T. was inducted into the Atomic Speedway Hall of Fame in 1992. Kerr helped many young drivers get started in the sport including his grandson Tommy Kerr, who drives for Larry Garner out of Maryville, TN.

Moron of the Month By Jerry Lemons Al Gore, Jr.
"There's a sucker born every minute"-- P.T. Barnum For years, Al Gore, Jr. and his ilk have been making millions of dollars from the myth of global warming. I say 'myth' because global warming is not a scientific fact. Records of temperatures have only been kept for a little over a hundred twenty-five years. That's negligible in measuring change in global temperatures. There is evidence that climate change has occurred numerous times in the earth's history, but none of the climate change, according to Gore, has occurred in the past hundred and fifty years without help from humans and their industries. Although it appears that global warming has occurred in the past fifty years, it's debatable whether we, as humans and our industries, have contributed to the rise in global temperatures. I assert that Al Gore, Jr. and his minions have been profiting from global warming. They have been scaring us with horror stories about how we—and our industries—are directly responsible for global warming, and the catastrophes it will entail. In the meanwhile, Al Gore, Jr. has been raking in millions of dollars from his campaign to curb greenhouse gases and emissions. He has actually made a business out of global warming. He has done this through films, TV specials, and books. His message is one of doom and of trying to apply guilt to us—the consumers. He tries to make it out to be our fault that global warming is occurring. (Meanwhile, Gore rides in his gas guzzling and polluting private jet and limousine.) One of Gore's problems is this: When it's below freezing in many areas of the country, and the water has frozen, and the temperature is way below freezing, it's hard for people to accept the theory of global warming. Al Gore, Jr. has already begun his campaign to convince “coldlanders” that global warming is a reality. Time will tell if Gore will succeed in his campaign. In the meantime, hundreds of thousands of people are being misled by Al Gore, Jr., who has taken a theory and tried to make it a fact and has scared people half to death. And he has made a fortune ten times over in the bargain. Maybe Al Gore, Jr. is not such a moron after all.

13 The Roane Reader Forty Years of Theater at Roane State By Jerry Lemons
This fall, Roane State Community College is marking its fortieth anniversary. It was the fall of 1971 when Roane State opened its doors and began operation. At that time, the college was located in the Fairmont building in Harriman--a small structure with a half-dozen classrooms, a tiny student lounge, and a small library. There is something else that is marking its fortieth anniversary at Roane State this fall--and that is theater. One of the first theatrical productions of Roane State was You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in the 1971-'72 year. That production was held in Kingston. Another early production was Antigone held in Harriman High School. The first theatrical production held in the permanent facility at Roane State was The Crucible in the fall of 1973. It was produced in the student lounge. The cast, crew and director went out on their own, tore down a barn that had been donated to the theater, transported the lumber to the college, built a stage in the student lounge, and produced The Crucible. For the first twenty-five years of its existence, the theater produced its plays in the student lounge. Most of the plays produced were directed by Bill Yates, long-time Professor of Speech and Theater at Roane State. Dozens of plays were produced in the student lounge, ranging from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to The Importance of Being Earnest. In its forty years of existence there have been only three heads of the Theater Department at Roane State: Bill Yates, Bruce Borin, and Michael Golebiewski. The final production to be held in the student lounge was A Christmas Carol in 1996. In 1997, the theater moved to its permanent facility, the O'Brien building on the main campus of Roane State. The inaugural production was Our Town directed by Bruce Borin. The new theater saw some ground-breaking off-Broadway productions such as Retrieving the Lamb and Maid of Amherst. In the late 1990s, Michael Golebiewski became the third head of the Roane State Speech and Theater Department. The theater expanded the number of its productions as well as performances during the college year; and it continued the production of "alternative" theater. Just some of the productions held were Sam Shepherd's Buried Child, To Kill a Mockingbird, Frankenstein, and The Rainmaker. For forty years, Roane State has been producing plays; but it wasn't Cole Heide until fourteen years ago that the theater obtained a permanent facility of 5-1-83 / 9-16-03 its own. The future bodes well for theater at Roane State. Under the Merry Christmas in Heaven direction of Michael Golebiewski, the theater will continue to produce Cole, I think about you everyday, The day you were born, the day you went away. ground-breaking and alternative plays, as well as more well-known and established theatrical productions. Rockwood Memories

As I write this column, it is a few days after Thanksgiving. I am still filled with leftover Thanksgiving turkey, ham, sweet potatoes, desserts and feeling good. This being Tennessee, we don't have a Currier and Ives snow scene outside the window, or no Jack Frost graffiti on the window pane. We will have to wait a while for that. But the nights are cold and crisp, and it is good to be inside and out of it. And since the dawn of time, in almost every culture, we've countered these dark short days of winter with some kind of celebration, whether it be Christmas or Hanukkah, almost all involving miraculous light. And so we defy the cold and the dark. We refuse to grant winter the victory, reminding her with our candles, glittering decorations and crackling fires, that light and life are not quenched and that her icy gloomy days are numbered. We gather our family close to us and serve the hearty, rich foods that warm us body and soul. This is a time to listen closely as wishes are made, one by one, and to secretly write them down and to slip and satisfy them before the traffic and the weather gets too bad. This is a time to whisper a prayer of thanks for health, for love, for food and shelter, or if you lack these things, to remember that life itself is a blessing and spring will come again, spring always comes again. It is a miracle the way that our blue planet, just a ball of rock, just warm and wet enough to support our lives. The animals know to migrate or borrow down snug in the earth; we light fires and put on warm coats and survive somehow. I thought of these things actually last year around Christmas time when I came back from Crossville and neared Rockwood from the top of the mountain. The stars sparkled above me and the city lights glittered beneath me. At the foot of this beautiful mountain with its Christmas Star shining so brightly, visible for miles around, a town was planted. Its' street lamps and decorated streetlights and houses were burning like campfire embers in the gloom, tiny against the darkness of the night but comforting nonetheless. What I was seeing was life carrying on. Life warm and joyous and precious; life winning against the blowing of the winter wind and the bite of the frost. It would be nice to see a white Christmas. I do remember a few in Rockwood. We had some great Christmas parades with Santa riding in the old Molyneaux Chevrolet a few times. I couldn't wait to see the new Columbia bicycles at the Western Auto Store and the Schwinn bikes at Mr. Hickey's place. And the "Dime" stores were loaded with toys. Remember the candy bins at the dime stores? You can't find candy like that anymore. The "apple and orange" matinees are probably a thing of the past too. And those wonderful animated Christmas figurines and scenery must have taken days to put in window at Wright's Jewelers. We would usually walk to the Presbyterian Church across from the High School on Christmas Eve to see Santa and get our "treat". My dad and I, (after I got old enough) would lag behind and go back home for a while to make sure Santa had arrived for my younger brother and sisters. He never let us down either. My dad had a model train collection and was well known for it. Every year instead of a pony that I hoped for, I would get more model train accessories. I always wondered, when I was a child how come this always happens. Whatever your family's celebration-tradition this time of year, enjoy it, take pictures, tell stories, play music, get the necessary errands done early, gather close with the ones you love. This is the time for it .

Occasionally, airline flight attendants make an effort to make the "in-flight safety lecture" more entertaining. Here’s some examples: "As we prepare for takeoff, please make sure your tray tables and seat backs are fully upright in their most uncomfortable position." "There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 6 ways out of this airplane..." "Your seat cushions can be used for floatation, and in the event of an emergency water landing, please take them with our compliments." "Thank you for flying Delta. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride." As we waited just off the runway for another airliner to cross in front of us, some of the passengers were beginning to retrieve luggage from the overhead bins. The head attendant announced, "This aircraft is equipped with a video surveillance system that monitors the cabin during taxiing. Any passengers not remaining in their seats until the aircraft comes to a full and complete stop at the gate will be strip-searched as they leave the aircraft." "Should the cabin lose pressure, oxygen masks will drop from the overhead area. Please place the bag over your own mouth and nose before assisting children or adults acting like children." "As you exit the plane, please make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants. Please do not leave children or spouses." And from the pilot during his welcome message: "We are pleased to have some of the best flight attendants in the industry. Unfortunately none of them are on this flight...!" An airline pilot had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, give a smile, and a "Thanks for flying XYZ airline. In light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for this little old lady walking with a cane. She said, "Sonny, mind if I ask you a question?" "Why no Ma'am," said the pilot, "What is it?" The little old lady said, "Did we land or were we shot down?" Overheard on an American Airlines flight into Amarillo, on a particularly windy and bumpy day. During the final approach the Captain was really having to fight it. After an extremely hard landing, the Flight Attendant came on the PA and announced, "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Amarillo. Please remain in your seats with your seat belts fastened while the Captain taxis what's left of our airplane to the gate!" In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, oxygen masks will descend from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have a small child traveling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are traveling with two small children, decide now which one you love more."

Simple Science Projects Make Your Own Rainbow
Learn how to make a rainbow with this fun science experiment. Using just a few simple everyday items you can find out how rainbows work while enjoying an interactive, hands on activity. What you'll need: A glass of water (about A sunny day three quarters full) White paper Take the glass of water and paper to a part of the room with sunlight (near a window is good). Hold the glass of water (being careful not to spill it) above the paper and watch as sunlight passes through the glass of water, refracts (bends) and forms a rainbow of colors on your sheet of paper. Try holding the glass of water at different heights and angles to see if it has a different effect. While you normally see a rainbow as an arc of color in the sky, they can also form in other situations. You may have seen a rainbow in a water fountain or in the mist of a waterfall and you can even make your own such as you did in this experiment. Rainbows form in the sky when sunlight refracts (bends) as it passes through raindrops, it acts in the same way when it passes through your glass of water. The sunlight refracts, separating it into the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
Christmas ornaments you can make yourself Foil Ornaments
Dress up the tree with shiny ornaments made foil. Turn cupcake liners inside out; stack, and then glue back-to-back; tie on yarn to hang. Poke Christmas lights through small liners for a radiant glow.
Peppermint Ornaments
Kids, you can brighten up the Christmas tree by creating your own ornaments and tree-toppers using pipe cleaners, foil, and felt. Peppermints are the coolest holiday sweets -- especially when transformed into edible hanging ornaments. Lay five or so peppermint candies in a circle to form a wreath; bond sides together with icing. Adorn front with cinnamon candies or mints. Let dry two hours before hanging. Loop twine around ornament; knot.

Astronomy for amateurs
It is because of the Sun & Moons gravity that we have high & low tides. The solar system includes the Sun and all the objects that orbit around it due to its gravity. This includes things such as planets, comets, asteroids, meteoroids and moons. The Solar System formed around 4.6 billion years ago. There are eight planets in the Solar System. The four inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars while the four outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The inner planets (also known as terrestrial planets) are smaller and made mostly of rock and metal. The outer planets (also known as gas giants) are much larger and made mostly of hydrogen, helium and other gases. As of 2008, there are also five dwarf planets: Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Makemake & Haumea. There is an asteroid belt which lies between the orbits or Mars and Jupiter, it features a large number of irregular shaped asteroids. For thousands of years humans were unaware of the Solar System and believed that Earth was at the center of the Universe.

Snowman Necklace or Ornament
These adorable snowmen can be made by using: White glue (like Elmer's glue) Paper clip Scissors Waxed paper String or yarn Scraps of construction paper: black, and orange A hole punch (for cutting eyes, and buttons) Googly eyes (from a craft store) - optional Tiny buttons - optional 2 very tiny twigs (for arms) On waxed paper, spread 2 or 3 blobs of white glue in the shape of a snowman. Unfold a paper clip into a V-shape (hanger). Cut a tiny hat from black construction paper and put it on the snowman on top of the paper clip hanger. Put the ends of the paper clip into the glue at the top of the snowman. For the snowman's eyes, use black paper circles or use googly eyes. Put the eyes on the snowman. Add a tiny orange (carrot-shaped) nose. Add a few paper, or small real buttons down the front of the body. Let the glue dry - it will take a few days. When it dries, the glue will be clear. Peel it gently off the waxed paper. String the snowman on some yarn for a cool necklace or use a shorter string to use as an ornament.
