The Trail of Tears The Trail of Tears story is a heartbreaking tale of how “we” stoled the Native American’s land. Research the facts, and see if you feel shame for what they had to go through simply because “we” forced them away from their homeland. As part of President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Policy of 1830, the Cherokee Nation was forced to give up its lands east of the Mississippi River and migrate to Indian Territory (now present day Oklahoma.) During the forced march, over 4,000 of the 15,000 Indians died of hunger, disease, cold, and exhaustion. In the Cherokee language, the event is called Nunna daul Tsuny -- "the trail where they cried." The Indian Removal Act was spawned by the rapidly expanding population of new settlers which created tensions with the American Indian tribes. Even Thomas Jefferson, who often cited the Great Law of Peace of the Iroquois Confederacy as the model for the U.S. Constitution, supported Indian removal as early as 1802.

My First Car
When I turned 18, I went to work at Roane Hosiery. I had to bum a ride everyday because I didn’t have my driver’s license, or a car. The first car I had, I bought from Mama for $200. It was an old, white Ford Falcon, and it was a straight shift. I would practice driving the car up our slopped gravel driveway to learn how to pull out in a straight shift without rolling backwards on a hill. One day, I was practicing while Daddy was sitting on the swing on the front porch. I kept killing the motor trying to pull out due to letting my foot off the clutch too soon. After about five tries, Daddy jumped up from the swing, ran through the yard and up to my car and said, “ You pull this $%@#$^ car up this driveway and don’t you roll back 1 inch!” Now, this was before my Daddy got saved, and he really cussed a lot. And although he never whooped any of us kids, we were terrified of him. I sat there in the car, scared for my life. I took a deep breath and slowly pulled out. I didn’t roll back an inch, and I didn’t spin one gravel. Daddy got up and went into the house. That’s when I realized I could drive a straight shift. I took my driver’s license test in that same old Falcon, and passed! The trooper said I passed because if I could drive a straight shift, I could drive anything. I spent many hours in that old car, driving to work, or just running around with my friends. I doubt if there are many young girls that can drive a straight shift nowadays, but when I was young, an automatic car was scarce, and besides, they weren’t as cool as a straight shift.

ROAD SUPERINTENDENT
I decided to run for Road Superintendent in 2012, because it was the perfect opportunity for me to serve the people of Roane County doing what I know best. My father and uncle started Midtown Paving Company in 1962. Since those early days, I’ve developed a lifetime of experience in the road building industry. I started working as a kid at the ground level, learning the level of detail and hard work required to get each job done right. I’ve used that experience to modernize the Highway Department and provide efficient service to the people of Roane County. Since I was elected in 2012, and thanks to the hard work of our employees, we have accomplished some significant goals. However, there is still much work to be done. I’m running for re-election to continue the important work we started in 2012. I hope you will support me in this election so that we continue moving the Highway Department forward, but regardless, I hope you will contact me if there is anything we can do for you. SAVING YOUR TAX DOLLARS • Dennis Ferguson has operated the Highway Department so that it is under budget. Fun Facts about Elvis Presley Elvis purchased his first guitar when he was just 11 years old. He wanted a rifle, but his mama convinced him to get a guitar instead. In 1947, a local radio show offered a young Elvis (age 12) a chance to sing live on air, but he was too shy to go on. At 18, Elvis paid $4 to make his first record, a gift for his mama. In 1954, Elvis auditioned for a gospel quartet named the Songfellows. They said no. That same year, a local radio DJ played Elvis' version of That's All Right. He went on to play it 13 more times that day, but had trouble convincing his audience that Elvis was white. His breakthrough hit was Heartbreak Hotel, released in 1956 - a song inspired by a newspaper article about a local suicide. When performing on TV in 1956, host Milton Berle advised Elvis to perform without his guitar, reportedly saying, "Let 'em see you, son." Elvis' gyrating hips caused outrage across the U.S. and within days he was nicknamed Elvis the Pelvis. Elvis was 6 feet tall and wore a size 11 shoe. Recording Hound Dog in the studio, Elvis reportedly demanded 31 takes. Elvis bought his mansion, Graceland, in Memphis, TN in 1957 for $100,000. It was named by its previous owner after his daughter, Grace. In 1956, he began his film career with a western, Love Me Tender. His second film, Loving You, featured his parents as audience members. Following his mother's death in 1957, he never watched the film again. He went on to make a total of 31 movies in his career. In December 1957, Elvis was drafted into the U.S. Army, earning a $78 monthly salary. During his brief two-year stint on active duty, he was unable to access his music-generated income of $400,000. In 1959, while serving overseas in Germany, Elvis (then 24 years old) met his future wife, 14 year-old Priscilla Beaulieu. They were married 8 years later. Elvis and Priscilla's only daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, was born in 1968. Lisa Marie later married Michael Jackson and actor (and Elvis obsessive) Nicholas Cage. Mr. Cage is reportedly the only person outside of Presley's immediate family to have ever seen Elvis' Graceland bedroom. Following his divorce from Priscilla in 1972, Elvis was said to have allowed 'good-looking girls' who waited outside Graceland to enter after hours. One night it was 152 women! Elvis' popularity faded in the 1960's with the rise of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and others. He successfully relaunched his career with a 1968 television special that came about because Elvis had walked down a busy Los Angeles street and had no one recognize or approach him. He was distantly related to former U.S. Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jimmy Carter. Elvis recorded more than 600 songs, but did not write any of them.

So, your doctor ordered a test or treatment and your insurance company denied it. That Is a typical cost saving method. OK, here Is what you do: 1. Call the insurance company and tell them you want to speak with the "HIPAA Compliance/Privacy Officer" (By federal law, they have to have one) 2. Then ask them for the NAMES as well as CREDENTIALS of every person accessing your record to make that decision of denial. By law you have a right to that information. 3. They will almost always reverse the decision very shortly rather than admit that the committee is made of low paid HS graduates, looking at "criteria words," making the medical decision to deny your care. Even in the rare case it is made by medical personnel, it is unlikely that it is made by a board certified doctor in that specialty and they DO NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW THIS! 4. Any refusal should be reported to the US Office of Civil Rights (OCR.9ov) as a HIPAA violation.

Long Leaf Pine Needle Class - Sharron Eckert Instructor Long pine needles can be sewn in coils creating unique items. The coiling technique is an ancient process known in many civilizations throughout history with people using native grasses. Sharron Eckert will be teaching this technique using the materials of long leaf pine needles and waxed linen thread. Students should be aware that this is a sewing process, not a weaving process. In this three-hour class, students will learn how to begin coiling, five different stitches, and how to close the coiling process. Materials will be prepared and ready for use. Students will make a sampler item, 3 1/2 inches diameter, in this class. Eckert learned the process for working with long leaf pine needles from two master craftspersons. She spent three hours each Monday night for over a year with Elisabeth McCutchson who had moved to Pleasant Hill from North Carolina. She participated in a week-long workshop with Judy Mallow, a fifth-generation pine needle crafter. Eckert continues to perfect her work, some of which can currently be seen at the PCAC Art Guild at Fairfield Glade gallery and at the CATS Gallery in the Crossville Mall. In previous years, her works have been at the Appalachian Center for Crafts Joe L Evins in Smithville, the Foothills (Fine) Craft Festival in Knoxville, and the Best of Tennessee Craft in the Reece Museum at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. One of her pieces is in the permanent collection at the (Crossville) Art Circle Public Library hanging near the Circulation Desk. Identical classes are scheduled in several locations at five different times to accommodate as many students as possible. Registration must occur at these various locations. Tues. HE HAD PLASMA TRANSFUSIONS ON A REGULAR BASIS AND WAS CLOSELY WATCH BY A DR AT UT. HE FINALLY WENT INTO REMISSION. PRAYERS WERE ANSWERED. THEN ON FEB. 10TH OF THIS YEAR JESSE WENT INTO COMPLETE RENAL FAILURE AT THE AGE OF 23. HE WAS AT PARKWEST FOR SOME TIME. THE MEDICATIONS WERE NO LONGER WORKING. HE HAD TO START DIALYSIS. MIND YOU HE HAD JUST HAD HIS SON GABRIEL HIS WIFE HAS STOOD BY HIM THROUGHOUT. HE HAS DIALYSIS 3 TIMES A WEEK FOR 4 HOURS EACH TIME. HE RECENTLY WENT TO VANDERBILT HOSPITAL. WE JUST GOT WORD BACK THAT HE IS BEING PLACED ON THE LIVING DONOR LIST. WE ARE TRYING TO GET THE WORD OUT TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS WE CAN. What is Tourette’s Syndrome
Tourette's syndrome is a condition that causes you to make involuntary movements or noises called tics. It starts in childhood and is associated with various other problems such as behavioral problems and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It can often be well managed with psychological treatments and sometimes with medication. Tourette's syndrome is a disorder that starts in childhood. The prime symptom is to have repeated tics. A tic is a sudden movement or sound that is repeated over and over. A tic has no purpose and, in general, you cannot help doing it. For example, repeated blinking, repeated throat clearing, repeated head nodding, etc. Tics are common in children and usually last less than one year. Children with Tourette's syndrome have many types of tics of sudden movements and noises and the tics persist for more than a year. The syndrome is named after the person who described the condition in 1885, Dr Georges Gilles de la Tourette. What causes Tourette's syndrome? The cause is not known.

The rest in meditation is deeper than the deepest sleep that you can ever have - because in meditation you transcend all thoughts/desires. This brings such coolness to the brain and it is like servicing or overhauling the whole body-mind complex.

An inexperienced preacher was to hold a graveside burial service at a pauper's cemetery for an indigent man with no family or friends. Not knowing where the cemetery was, he made several wrong turns and got lost. When he eventually arrived an hour late, the hearse was nowhere in sight, the backhoe was next to the open hole, and the workmen were sitting under a tree eating lunch. The diligent young pastor went to the open grave and found the vault lid already in place. the history of bingo
In the U.S., bingo was originally called "beano". It was a country fair game where a dealer would select numbered discs from a cigar box and players would mark their cards with beans. They yelled "beano" if they won. The game's history can be traced back to 1530, to an Italian lottery called "Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia," which is still played every Saturday in Italy. From Italy the game was introduced to France in the late 1770s, where it was called "Le Lotto", a game played among wealthy Frenchmen. The Germans also played a version of the game in the 1800s, but they used it as a child's game to help students learn math, spelling and history. When the game reached North America in 1929, it became known as "beano". It was first played at a carnival near Atlanta, Georgia. New York toy salesman Edwin S. Lowe renamed it "bingo" after he overheard someone accidentally yell "bingo" instead of "beano". He hired a Columbia University math professor, Carl Leffler, to help him increase the number of combinations in bingo cards. By 1930, Leffler had invented 6,000 different bingo cards. [It is said that Leffler then went insane.] A Catholic priest from Pennsylvania approached Lowe about using bingo as a means of raising church funds. When bingo started being played in churches it became increasingly popular. By 1934, an estimated 10,000 bingo games were played weekly, and today more than $90 million dollars are spent on bingo each week in North America alone.

1. Car and truck repairs can be done at an auto mechanics school for a fraction of the cost of a garage or repair shop. The students do the work supervised by certified teachers, that insures the work is done properly. The only cost to you is for the parts needed. 2. To help maintain your car or truck change the oil and filter every 3000 miles, make sure to check all fluids to make sure they are full, including battery and radiator. Also check all belts and hoses for wear and splits. If belts are worn replace them. Be sure to check tires for proper inflation for better gas mileage and tire wear. 3. To keep windshield and back glass from fogging clean them with shaving cream. Then wipe them with a clean cloth or paper towel. Repeat as necessary. 4. To help repel the dust on dashboards between cleanings wipe with a used dryer sheet. 5. Soaking window decals with baby wipes will soften the adhesive allowing for easier removal of decal. 6. Tire dealers sometimes offer slightly used tires for sale, that have been replaced with upgrades or new rims and tires. Next time you need tires ask your dealer if he has any slightly used tires in your size to save you money. 7. If you have children or pets that ride in the back seat, put an old sheet over the seat to protect the upholstery plus it's machine washable. 8. If you need mats in you car or truck try using indoor outdoor carpeting. 9 To neutralize ash tray smells in your car sprinkle the tray with baking soda.

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car. Apparently I snore so loudly that it scares everyone in the car I'm driving. Household Hints White vinegar is an inexpensive way to keep your dishes sparkling, just pour white vinegar in the compartment of your dishwasher instead of a liquid rinse product. Use Arm & Hammer baking soda to clean stains from Tupperware. If your dryer seems to take longer to dry the clothes then it used to, remove the screen filter and scrub both sides with a soft brush in warm soapy water (an old toothbrush works well). Then rinse thoroughly and dry before putting back in dryer. This will also help your heating element last longer. Repeat as necessary. To clean washable hats place in top rack of dish washer. But be sure to remove hat before the heat cycle then air dry. To soften new jeans or clothes add a 1/2 cup of table salt to water and wash as usual. To clean the toilet bowl add a 1/2 cup baking soda to 1 cup white vinegar in toilet bowl. When the fizzing stops, swish bowl a few times with bowl brush and flush. To keep down the spread of germs always close toilet lid before flushing. Place a damp wash cloth in a zip lock bag and put it in the freezer,when baby starts teething remove the the cloth from the bag and let them chew on it, it's soothing to there gums. Babies teething toys can be cleaned and sanitized by securing them to the top basket of the dish washer when doing a load of dishes. To remove pet hair from upholstery put a latex rubber glove on your hand and wipe over seats. A sponge also works well. Keep a package of unscented wipes in your car or truck in case of spills or for quick clean ups. Pour 1/4 cup Arm & Hammer baking soda down basin and tub drains to deodorize, let stand for a few minutes then rinse. Oops, dropped a raw egg on the floor? Grab the salt shaker and pour a thick layer of salt over the egg and wait a few minutes, then clean up and discard.

St. Louis Barbecue Sauce
•1 tablespoon onion powder •2 cups ketchup •1 tablespoon garlic powder •1/2 cup water •1/2 teaspoon cayenne •1/3 cup apple cider vinegar •1/4 teaspoon salt •1/3 cup brown sugar •2 tablespoons yellow mustard Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over a low heat. Stirring occasionally and simmer for 20 minutes. Sauce should be thin, but not watery. Allow to cool. Store in an airtight container and refrigerate. Sauce is better if allow to sit for a day. Sauce can be stored in refrigerator for up to one week after preparation or 3-4 months in freezer.
Memphis Barbecue Sauce
•1 cup ketchup •2 tablespoons brown sugar •1/2 cup apple cider vinegar •1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce •1/2 cup water •1 tablespoon paprika •1/4 cup pureed onion •1 tablespoon mild chili powder •2 tablespoons minced garlic •2 teaspoons dried oregano •2 tablespoons butter •2 teaspoons dried thyme •2 tablespoons molasses •1 teaspoon salt •2 tablespoons prepared mustard •1 teaspoon black pepper Melt butter in a saucepan over a medium heat. Add onion and garlic and saute for 2-3 minutes. Add remaining ingredients (vinegar last), reduce heat and simmer over low for 12-15 minutes. Allow to cool. Store in an airtight container or jar in the refrigerator for up to 1 week after preparation.
Texas BBQ Sauce
•1 cup water •2 tablespoons spicy mustard •1 cup ketchup •2 tablespoons/30 mL honey •1/2 cup cider vinegar •2 cloves garlic, minced •1/4 cup butter •1 beef bullion cube •1/4 cup minced onion •1 tablespoon paprika •3 stocks celery, chopped •2 teaspoons chili powder •3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce •salt and pepper to taste Melt butter in a medium saucepan. Add garlic, onion, and celery. Saute until lightly browned. Add water and bullion cube. Stir until bullion is dissolved. Add remaining ingredients, stir and simmer for about 15 minutes. Allow to cool and pour into a blender. Blend until smooth.

Or the company could “rent” those patents out to its rivals – and collect both onetime and or ongoing royalty fees. Our $6.00 company’s execs now think they will make more than $1 billion on patent licensing over the next 12 months. Next up is a renewal of a patent license deal with Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) that could generate more than $300 million each year. Then there’s that new deal with a major tech company, which we expect to boost our favorite company’s profits well above the current consensus range. This is likely just the beginning of many new doors that will be opening, thanks to the combined forces of our favorite $6.00 company and a major player. The deal only closed a few months ago, and the months ahead should see a flurry of action on the new contract front. Of course, we are especially excited about the prospects for small-cell technology, which is about to take wireless data and voice traffic away from big, bulky, obsolete, cell towers and place it in New Small Smart Black Boxes… that will extend reliable, powerful wireless signals into all kinds of hard-to-reach locales. The History of Cracker Jacks
IT STARTED WAY BACK IN 1872. That’s when a German immigrant named Frederick Rueckheim began selling popcorn out of a street cart on Chicago’s Fourth Avenue. The venture was so successful that he brought his brother, Louis, over from Germany to help out. Hoping to stand out from other manufacturers, the two began tinkering with Frederick’s recipe, and eventually perfected a combination of popcorn, peanuts and molasses. After a hit showing at the 1893 World’s Fair, F.W. Rueckheim & Brother, as the company was known, was officially in business. BEFORE SAILOR JACK AND BINGO, THERE WERE THE CRACKER JACK BEARS.
The iconic image on Cracker Jack boxes is of the boy decked out in a sailor’s outfit and his little dog. But before those two, the company mascots were two fun-loving bears shown doing everything from fishing to playing baseball to climbing the Statue of Liberty. One postcard from 1907 depicts the bears in a tree with a gun-toting Teddy Roosevelt below. “Don’t shoot, Mr. President!” one says. SAILOR JACK WAS MODELED AFTER THE FOUNDER’S GRANDSON. Robert Rueckheim served as the model for Sailor Jack, whose image first appeared in advertisements in 1916 and was printed on every Cracker Jack box beginning in 1918. Sadly, Robert died of pneumonia at the age of 8, but Sailor Jack lives on today alongside his dog, Bingo, who was said to be modeled after a stray belonging to Eckstein.

In 1910, Cracker Jack began slipping coupons into its boxes that could be collected and redeemed for watches, silverware, sewing machines, and other goods. In 1912, the company decided to do away with the coupons and focus on appealing to kids. It began putting a small prize inside each box, and sales went through the roof.

Do large flocks of birds show up on weather radar screens?
Yes. In fact, the phenomenon is common enough that meteorologists have a name for it: bird-burst. Even the newest Doppler radar equipment might register a big flock of birds as a storm. Because weather radar uses a wide beam, it can pick up a flock that covers a large area. This most often occurs at sunrise, when birds leave their nests all at once. If groups of birds from a large flock leave their nests every few minutes, they may appear on radar as concentric rings, which resemble the appearance of the cool, moist air conditions that can produce thunderstorms. Radar technicians, however, have been trained to recognize the difference between a micro-burst and a bird-burst.

Back to School Funnies Summer vacation was over and Little Johnny returned back to school. Only two days later his teacher phoned his mother to tell her that he was misbehaving. "Wait a minute," she said. "I had Johnny with me for three months and I never called you once when he misbehaved!" Physics Teacher: "Isaac Newton was sitting under a tree when an apple fell on his head and he discovered gravity. Isn't that wonderful?" Student: "Yes sir, if he had been sitting in class looking at books like us, he wouldn't have discovered anything." A little girl came home from school and said to her mother, "Mommy, today in school I was punished for something that I didn't do." The mother exclaimed, "But that's terrible! I'm going to have a talk with your teacher about this ... by the way, what was it that you didn't do?" The little girl replied, "My homework." The teacher came up with a good problem. "Suppose," she asked the second-graders, "there were a dozen sheep and six of them jumped over a fence. How many would be left?" "None," answered little Norman. "None? Norman, you don't know your arithmetic." "Teacher, you don't know your sheep. When one goes, they all go!" The teacher of the earth science class was lecturing on map reading. After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes the teacher asked, "Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude...?" After a confused silence, a voice volunteered, "I guess you'd be eating alone." Little Johnny wasn't getting good marks in school. One day he surprised the teacher with an announcement. He tapped her on the shoulder and said, "I don't want to scare you, but my daddy says if I don't start getting better grades, somebody is going to get a spanking!" Teacher asked George: how can you prove the earth is round? George replied: I can't. Besides, I never said it was. Teacher: Justin, make a sentence starting with the letter 'I'. Justin: I is... Teacher: No, no, no, don't say "I is", you say "I am". Justin: OK, I am the ninth letter of the alphabet.

www.futureworldhistorybooks.com. Chapter 3 - Brad had been wandering around for 2 days. He found there were fresh water ponds all over. He also discovered an occasional piece of fruit on the ground. He wasn’t sure if he should eat it, but he was really hungry and eventually his hunger won. The fruit was good, it looked like a pear and had the taste and texture of an apple. He became accustomed to the temperature. It never changed, even at night it always felt like it was 65 degrees. It rained every day but the canopy was so thick very little of it actually fell to the ground. It did drip down the sides of the trees, gathering around the base of them before running into the little ponds. He kept thinking about Kate. He missed her so much and he was sure she was wondering where he was. If he could call her and let her know he was lost, but otherwise okay, that would be wonderful. But that would never happen. If he couldn’t find a way to get home he would never see her again. That frightened him more than anything else. His days were always the same. He would walk for hours but the scenery never changed until he noticed something different on the ground. He walked over to it and discovered a large wooden block from a children’s toy set. On it was a big red uppercase “C”, a lower case “C”, the word “cat”, the number 3, a plus sign, and a minus sign. Except for the size, this block was about three inches on a side, it looked like a typical wooden block. It was a little bulky, but he put it in his pocket. Brad was excited now. He thought perhaps there were other people here. He yelled “Hello” several times but there was no answer. Brad continued to wander through the rainforest. He lost track of the days, but he continued to carry the wooden block with him. He was sure it was the key to getting back home. After being lost in the forest for what he estimated was at least a month he realized something. He obviously hadn’t bathed, shaved, or cut his nails since he got here. But he had no beard and his nails had not grown at all. As far as he could tell he didn’t smell bad either. Even his clothes, which should have been in tatters by now, seemed to be the same as when he arrived. Once again he began to wonder about his physical state. Perhaps this was all a really bad dream from which he would eventually wake. He slept every night propped up against a tree, waking up when the morning rain started. This morning was different. He was awaken by somebody shaking him. He opened his eyes and was shocked to see a man standing next to him. The man said, “Good morning, you have no idea how happy I am to see you.” Brad, stammering, said, “Good morning, I’m happy to see you too. Do you know where we are?” “No, I was in a room in my house and saw a big wooden block in one of the bedrooms. I have no idea where it came from. I picked it up and the next thing I knew I was here. I’ve lost track of time but I would guess it was several years ago. My name is Jasper.” Now Brad was sure the wooden block was the key to getting back home. He took the block out of his pocket and showed it to Jasper. “Is this the block you saw?” “Yes, is that how you got here too?” “No, I touched a blue milk bottle.” Jasper reached into his pocket and pulled out a small blue milk bottle that looked like the one Brad had touched. “I’m pretty sure this is it.” “Yeah, it is. Where did you find it?” “I woke up one morning and it was on the ground next to me.” “I think I already know the answer to this question but where was your house?” “I lived in a little town called Mountain Ridge.” “I’ll bet your house was on Center Street.” “Yeah, it was. I presume that’s your house now.” “That’s right. I closed on the house in the morning and found myself here in the afternoon. You do realize that whoever did this to us is probably watching us right now laughing.” “I never thought about it that way but you might be right. Anyway, I think that these two things are the key to getting us back home. Do you remember the date when you got here?” “Yeah, it was March 25th, 2016.” “Are you sure about the date. I ended up here on February 18th, 2004. That means I have been here for twelve years! That doesn’t seem possible.” “I don’t think time here is the same as time back home. I’m sure you are wearing the same clothes you wore when you got here and they are showing no signs of wear. I’ll bet you haven’t shaved either and you don’t have a beard. So maybe very little time has passed back home. By the way, I agree the bottle and the wood block are the keys to getting us back home, but I think they have to be activated somehow. Do you have any ideas?” Jasper scratched his head for a few seconds and said “Nope.”

--------------------------Kayden will be 1 year old July 30th. Thank you so much for your help and prayers. Please continue to pray for Baby Kayden to defeat his cancer.
Kayden Christopher is at St. Judes in Memphis. He is still receiving chemo and the MRI shows the tumor has shrunk. He also has completely regained his eyesight. The bad news is the tumor is inoperable, and he may have lost some of his hearing because of the chemo. Kayden is expected to be at St. Judes at least until late August. A family member must be with him 24 hours a day to monitor his progress and any problems that may arise. Although his medical and lodging bills are paid by St. Judes, there are other expenses, such as food, formula, diapers, household supplies, development equipment and transportation to and from Memphis to enable family members to stay there with him. His Dad Matthew, Nanny Kay and PawPaw Larry, along with his 6 year old brother Keaton are staying in Memphis to help provide for his needs. McDowell takes 1st win with Bloomquist chassis by: John Griffin The first race in March was a record crowd at Smoky Mountain Speedway. On Saturday night, July 8th when the Lucas Oil Dirt series came to town the crowd that showed up set a new track record for fans. After time trials had been completed it was Scott Bloomquist setting fast time with a lap of 15.679 seconds. The 60 lap super late models saw Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Georgia jump out to the lead in his new Bloomquist chassis prepared by Scott Bloomquist and owned by Nascar Sprint Cup series drivers Ty and Austin Dillion. McDowell didn’t have any trouble as he led from start to finish to win the $12,000 first place money. In second, was Jared Landers, with Scott Bloomquist 3rd to give Bloomquist race cars a clean sweep. In 4th, was Tim McCreadie with Steve Francis 5th, Brandon Sheppard 6th, Earl Pearson Jr. 7th, Derek Ellis 8th, Donald McIntosh 9th, Darrell Lanigan 10th, and Billy Ogle Jr. in his new Longhorn chassis from Knoxville, Tn in the Vanover Concrete racer in 11th. In the Sportsman feature was Jed Emert taking the win with Warren McMagranan in 2nd and Brad Seagle 3rd. In the street feature it was Chris Rickett taking the checkered with Austin Neely in 2nd and Brad Davis 3rd. The next race will be Friday July 29th with the Ray Cook Southern Nationals paying $5,300 to win.

How is a Rainbow Formed? The technical details of rainbow formation were first analyzed by Isaac Newton in 1665. His brilliant optics work concerning reflection and refraction certainly does not detract from the beauty and promise of the rainbow. On the contrary, Newton's scientific insights show the marvelous complexity of creation. The rainbow is a gracious pledge that God will not destroy the Earth a second time with a worldwide flood (Genesis 9:11-17): “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of a covenant between me and the Earth… Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.” (Genesis 9:13,15 NIV). A rainbow occurs when raindrops and sunshine cross paths. Sunlight consists of all the colors of light, which add together to make white illumination. When sunlight enters water drops, it reflects off their inside surfaces. While passing through the droplets, the light also separates into its component colors, which is similar to the effect of a glass prism. Each falling water drop actually flashes its colors to the observer for just an instant, before another drop takes its place. A rainbow is usually seen in the opposite direction in the sky from the sun. The rainbow light is reflected to the eye at an angle of 42 degrees to the original ray of sunlight. The bow shape is actually part of a cone of light that is cut off by the horizon. If you travel toward the end of a rainbow, it will move ahead of you, maintaining its shape. Thus, there is no real end to a rainbow, and no pot of gold waiting there. Because the 42 degree angle is measured from each individual observer's eye, no two people see exactly the same rainbow. Every person is at the center of his or her own particular cone of colored light. From the high vantage point of a mountaintop or an airplane a complete circle of rainbow light sometimes can be seen. The bright, primary rainbow has red on the outer edge and blue within. Higher in the sky there is always another, dimmer rainbow with the order of colors reversed. This secondary rainbow results from additional reflection of sunlight through the raindrops. It is most visible when there are dark clouds behind it. Look for the second bow high in the sky the next time rainbow colors appear. Some observers have even reported seeing third and fourth rainbows above the first two.

How Skipping Church Affects Our Children In a Q&A, Carl Trueman was asked about why churches today are losing their young people. Typical answers to this question range from things like the temptations of this world or the irrelevance of the church–your typical answers. But Trueman makes a keen and convicting connection between our parenting and apostasy. “The church is losing its young people because the parents never taught their children that it was important. I think that applies across the board. It applies to family worship, and it also applies to whether you are in church every Sunday and what priority you demonstrate to your children church has on a Sunday. If the sun shines out and their friends are going to the beach, do you decide to skip church and go to the beach? In which case, you send signals to your children that it is not important.” (Carl Trueman) Now we know that artificially taking your kids to church neither bestows salvation nor guarantees it. God is obviously not honored by external religious acts without heart worship. This type of legalism is not the subject of this discussion. This is about parenting and the weight of the responsibility behind how they prioritize their time and lifestyle choices for their families. Parents makes choices all the time for their families. As they decide on what takes priority in family, every choice is carefully observed and taken into the heart of their children. Yes, they are watching you, and they are learning from you. Maybe the reason why our children have no love for Christ is due to the fact that we as parents do not show any love or passion for Christ, evidenced by how we prioritize our time both on Sundays and during the week. When television, sports, school, hobbies even family itself are elevated to a place of idolatry and replace the vital Christian responsibilities, then we tell our children that Christ is secondary to all these things. We tell our children that it is not necessary to take up your cross and die to yourself daily in order to follow Christ. We tell them that you only have to live for Christ when it’s convenient for you. We tell them it is okay to sacrifice time with all-satisfying Savior if something “more fun” or “more important” comes along (sarcasm indicated by quotation marks if you didn’t catch that). And this sounds like a clear path to apostasy if you ask me. Let’s evaluate where our hearts are by observing our choices. Do you prioritize the local church? Do you prioritize the worship of Christ in your home and on Sundays? Do you prioritize serving Him and worshiping Him in the contexts of school and work? This doesn’t mean that you can’t ever miss a Sunday or that you can’t have any extracurricular activities. Instead, it is a sobering reminder that we shouldn’t put the things of God at the bottom of the priority list, because it tells our children that Christ is at the bottom of our priority list. And the God of this universe does not belong there.

My War with the Roaches by: Jerry Lemons
A week ago today, I moved into my house. The day after, I declared war on the roaches infesting the kitchen. The final straw had occurred when I had prepared a ham and cheese sandwich for my lunch and set it on the kitchen table. I went to the fridge to get a Coke, and when I turned around I saw a roach squatting on my sandwich. I hate roaches with a vengeance. To me they are ugly filthy disease-ridden things. There's something about their shape, their form and their actions that really get to me. Their blackish-brown hard-shelled body, their numerous little black legs, and their long feelers constantly waving radiate filth to me. All-in-all, roaches are repulsive to me, even more than rats and spiders.002D The fact that this certain roach had dared to crawl onto my sandwich and lay there and looked at me as if it owned the sandwich was too much for me. The nerve of that roach! The unmitigated gall of it. It was as if that roach was challenging me. I grabbed a fly swat and advanced upon the roach. Immediately it scurried across the sandwich. I took a swat at it and missed. It was incredibly quick and elusive in its movement. I took three or four more swats at it and missed. It finally scurried to the end of the table and disappeared. I stood there wagging my head, feeling downright ashamed that a roach had outfoxed me. Then a thought struck me: That roach had shown intelligence! I suddenly realized that roaches possess much more than instinct. They possess a degree of intelligence; they sense danger, and they react before the danger presents itself They have intelligence in their movements and actions, and in their plan of how to escape danger. I looked around the kitchen and was startled to see a half dozen roaches lying there-on the counters, around the appliances, and I even noticed another one on the kitchen table. I took the fly swat and went after them. I managed to kill two of them, but it took four or five swats to murder the little blankety blanks. The rest of them got away. Because of their quickness and elusive ability, they were difficult to kill. Their shells were so hard that they could absorb three or four blows with a swat before they were dazed. The roaches had increased dramatically in just a day or so. Now there were dozens of them. It seemed that for each one I killed a half dozen replaced it. I wondered where they came from. They had to have a central nest, but I couldn't imagine where it would be. I finally figured that it must be behind the kitchen wall. I wondered what the roaches lived on, what they ate. I kept the kitchen spotless; I didn't leave out any scraps of food. I finally realized that roaches will eat anything. They will even eat dust. I toyed with the idea of calling in a professional exterminator, but then I realized I couldn't afford it. I knew one thing: I needed a more effective weapon than a fly swat against the roaches. I made a trip to Wal-Mart and bought some bug spray. According to the printing on the can, the spray was effective in killing ants, spiders and roaches. And it was. One spray of the stuff would kill insects in a few seconds. I enjoyed watching the roaches die. After being zapped with the spray, the roaches would roll over on their backs and flail their black legs and frantically wave their feelers. A few seconds later they would depart this world and join their dead brothers and sisters in the roach hell I envisioned they went. I learned a number of things about roaches in my war with them. For one thing I learned that roaches do not like light. They prefer darkness. They rarely come out during the day. But at night! They come out in droves. Another thing I learned about roaches was that it was rare to find a lone roach. They usually had companions. If I saw one roach I could be sure there were others in close proximity. Still another thing I learned was that roaches possess a form of ESP with fellow roaches. If I killed one roach, another would scurry away, not even being in sight of the roach being killed. But the most interesting thing I learned about roaches is the fact that they periodically swarm; and the object of their swarming is mating and reproduction. I noticed that virtual swarms of roaches would periodically come out of the woodwork of the kitchen. I had images and even nightmares about the roaches swarming. I imagined an enormous ball of them stuck together in a giant wad, squirming and crawling over each other. It was like an image out of Dante's Inferno or out of the mind of Stephen King. The height of my war with the roaches was when I had a nightmare of them crawling all over me. I awoke in a cold sweat, breathing hard and my heart thudding. Of course I didn't win my war with the roaches. It continues to be a stalemate. But there is no way I am going to sun-ender. I will continue the fight. So that's how it stands at this moment. The roaches will continue to reproduce and swarm and invade, and I will try to repel them. For that is exactly what it is-an invasion. This is my house, my home. How dare such ugly filthy things invade my home! It's an outrage. So my war with the roaches continues with no end in sight.

by: Manuel Ybarra, Jr. America continues to display the foolishness of Man by trusting in Man rather than God the Creator. Many now foolishly claim that Science proved there is no God. That of course, is Man’s lie. Ironically, God’s truth is questioned by Man, who God formed from “the dust of the ground.” According to the Word of God, before God created Time, he “created heaven and earth.” And Earth was void (no life), completely covered by water, it was dark, “And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” And then God lit up the sun when he “said, let there be light: and there was light.” That was the beginning of Time, the First Day. Then in the next five days God separated the waters, made about 70% of the earth surface rise above water, ordered earth to produce all sorts of grasses, herbs, flowers, fruit trees. Then “God, out of the ground, formed every beast,” and every fowl. On the sixth day of creation he formed Adam (the first Man) from the dust of the ground and gave him life. Then “God said, It is not good that the man should be alone.” So God put Adam to sleep, removed one of his ribs, and from that rib, formed the first woman, Eve, for Adam’s wife. And we thank the LORD for that. God saw that his creation was good. Unfortunately, a few thousand years later, Man became very wicked and every imagination in Man’s heart was evil. This “grieved Him (God) at his heart” and He “Said, I will Destroy man” and “every living thing.” But because God found Noah righteous, God gave his living creation a second chance. He had Noah and his family build the Ark (a very large ship) to keep them and the animals safe during the “Great Flood” so they would “replenish the earth”, as God commanded them. Now Noah’s decedents are denying God’s Word and denying that God created the heavens and earth and every living thing including Man. But God has said, He created everything that was created, and He rightfully claims he owns everything. Including you and me. It is time we give God his deserving glory. GLORY BE TO GOD. Manhattan Project National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park commemorating the Manhattan Project that is run jointly by the National Park Service and Department of Energy. The park consists of three units: one in the Oak Ridge, Tennessee, one in Los Alamos, New Mexico and one in Hanford, Washington. It was established on November 10, 2015 when Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz signed the memorandum of agreement that defined the roles that the two agencies had when managing the park. The Department of Energy had owned and managed most of the properties located within the three different sites. For over ten years, the DoE worked with the National Park Service and federal, state and local governments and agencies with the intention of turning places of importance into a National Historical Park. After several years of surveying the three sites and five other possible alternatives, the two agencies officially recommended a historical park be established in Hanford, Los Alamos and Oak Ridge. The Department of Energy would continue to manage and own the sites while the National Park Service would provide interpretive services, visitor centers and park rangers. After two unsuccessful attempts at passing a bill in Congress authorizing the park in 2012 and 2013, the House and Senate ultimately passed the bill in December 2014, with President Obama signing the National Defense Authorization Act shortly thereafter which authorized the Manhattan Project National Historical Park.

Bent Trees
Next time you go hiking through the forest keep an eye out for some pretty strangely-shaped trees. These trees are quite unique in that they bend in very unnatural angles. Sure, some trees are just weirdly-shaped, but there's something special about these bent trees. Native Americans would bend trees in order to create trail markers that formed an early routing system, which served multiple purposes. From indicating that water and food was nearby, to warning travelers of rough country ahead, these landmarks were important features in navigating the early Americas.
At Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument in Colorado, for instance, you'll find lots of Ponderosa pine trees that were bent for this purpose: These trail trees point towards Pikes Peak, which the local Ute Indians believed to be a sacred site. But not every marker tree is so easily spotted. And in fact, looking for a strangely shaped tree isn’t quite enough, since each tribe created slightly different markers. Because most people don’t realize what these trees truly are, they are easily overlooked and can fall victim to development, disaster or disease with no one caring for them. Because trail trees are roughly 150 to 200 years old, many of them won’t be with us for very much longer. We may still be able to see this original roadmap of our country, but the window to do so is closing. The practice of bending trees to use as trail markers is by no means confined to Colorado. In fact, all across the country you can find bent trees that were used by Native American tribes to serve as permanent trail markers. Mountain Stewards have compiled a large database that includes over a thousand bent trees in 39 states. You can help out too! If you happen to run across a bent tree, snap a pic, note its location and shoot it over to Mountain Stewards. These trees represent an important part of Native American history and many groups are currently working to help protect them.

Princess Theatre Gets New Projector A new Panasonic projector with new lens was installed at the Princess recently by Jon Chemay and Morgan Anderson (photo by Darren York)! The $7K projector is capable of projecting DVD or Blue Ray. The last projector was unable to do Blue Ray. The clarity and precision is MUCH, MUCH better; what you would expect of a Turkey Creek, or Oak Ridge movie projector.
Australian Gun Law Update Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts.... From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent, Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent; Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the state of Victoria.....alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!) While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information. The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note Americans, before it's too late!

Nine year old Olivia Schillings was breathless with the anticipation of sharing news. “Mama?” “Yes?” Abigail answered her daughter without looking away from the pan of brownies she was pulling from the oven. “Emma’s crying.” “Why?” Abigail turned to look at her daughter now. Olivia was excitedly shifting her weight from one foot to the other. “I don’t know, but she’s crying in the bathroom.” Abigail turned off the oven and slid the oven mitt off her hand. Before she made it through the kitchen doorway, her teenage son came in the back door calling, “Mom?” “What is it, Luke?” Luke was tall, thin, and looked just like his father with his short brown hair and brown eyes. He looked agitated. “Well?” Abigail prodded. “Is Uncle Titus gay?” Luke blurted. “What?” Abigail wasn’t expecting a question like that. “Is he?” Luke was studying his mother’s face. “Who told you that?” “Caleb.” Luke answered. “He rode his bike over to hang out, because he said Uncle Titus was depressed because his boyfriend broke up with him.” “Jamie broke up with Titus?” Abigail was shocked. “So, he is gay?” “Yes, honey.” Abigail leaned against the kitchen door-frame. “Why didn’t anyone ever tell me?” “Your dad didn’t want to?” “Why not?” Luke crossed his arms over his Atlanta Braves shirt. “I’m not a little kid.” “I know that, Sweetheart.” Abigail was unsure how to handle the situation. She was irritated that it even was a situation. Jonathan was always trying to shelter the kids, and it always seemed to backfire lately. “So, how long has he been a fag?” “Luke!” Abigail was furious. “Don’t let me ever hear you use that word again.” “Dad says it’s a sin.” “He may say it’s a sin, but he doesn’t call people…that hateful word.” “It’s just a word,” Luke muttered. “It’s not just a word. It’s hateful, and it’s hurtful. I don’t want to hear it come out of your mouth again.” “Okay. Okay.” Luke sounded angry. Abigail thought he always sounded angry lately. Intentionally softening her voice, Abigail said, “I’m sure it’s kind of confusing to you. Do you have any questions?” “No.” Luke turned quickly and walked off. Abigail couldn’t tell if he was upset about the news or just angry no one told him. Following Luke outside, Abigail found Caleb sitting on the bottom step with Jacob. “Go play, Jakey,” she said, “I want to talk to Caleb.” Jacob looked disappointed to be told to leave, but he was a habitually obedient child. Abigail waited until her youngest was out of earshot, and then asked, “Titus and Jamie broke up?” Caleb nodded, and said, “Uncle Titus is taking it really hard.” “I imagine so,” Abigail said sadly. “They’ve been together for a very long time.” “I didn’t know Luke didn’t know he was gay.” Caleb looked bewildered. “I thought everyone knew.” “Jonathan didn’t want to tell them.” “Why not?” “He thought it would be too confusing for them.” “What’s confusing about it?” Caleb asked. Abigail sighed. “You know what your Uncle Jonathan thinks about homosexuality.” “I think he’s wrong,” Caleb stated. Abigail shrugged. “I don’t know about all that, but I do know I care a lot about Titus. We all do. Is he okay?” Caleb shrugged. “He cries at night. I can hear him through the wall.” Abigail felt her heart contract with a sharp pain. “Bless his heart.” “I don’t know what to do, so I’m just trying to give him some space.” Caleb was rolling a small pebble between his thumb and finger. Abigail put her arm around her nephew. “You’re having a hard go of it lately, aren’t you, Sweetheart.”

Caleb shrugged. “How’s your mom? Have you heard anything?” “Not really.” Caleb tossed the pebble away. “Uncle Titus said she’s going to stay in the hospital for a while, and then she’ll probably go stay with Gran and Gramps for a while.” “I’m sorry, Caleb.” Abigail gave his shoulders a squeeze. “I really am. I know this has to be so hard for you. Are you doing okay with Titus?” Caleb nodded. “How’s everything else? How are your brothers.” “Fine.” Caleb reached for another pebble from the planter by his foot. “Anything exciting happen lately?” Caleb’s neck flushed pink, but he shook his head. Abigail hadn’t missed the blush, and prodded the boy in the ribs with her finger, “What are you not telling me?” “Nothing!” Caleb laughed. “Come on! You can tell your Auntie Abigail.” “Nothing.” Caleb grinned. “I just met a girl.” “Now the truth comes out!” Abigail laughed. “Who is she? Is she pretty?” “Her name’s Megan. I mow for her papaw.” “Is she nice?” Caleb shrugged. “I just met her once. We were going to go swimming with Robbie, but he got sick. So, we’re going to go do something Saturday.” “A date!” Abigail teased. “Not a date,” Caleb protested. “We’re just hanging out. She doesn’t know anyone.” “New to Little River?” “Just staying with her papaw for the summer.” “I see.” Abigail paused, and then exclaimed, “Hey! You didn’t answer my question. Is she pretty?” Caleb blushed again and nodded. They sat on the steps for a few minutes, watching Jacob try to climb a tree. Caleb interrupted the silence by saying, “I think Jamie broke up with Uncle Titus because of me.” “What do you mean?” Abigail asked. “I think it’s because Uncle Titus let us move in with him.” Caleb tossed the second pebble away. “He spends too much time taking care of Mama and us boys, and not enough time with Jamie.” Abigail didn’t doubt that was the reason for the breakup. She knew Jamie had been trying to get Titus to move in with him for years. To her nephew, she said, “It’s not your fault, Caleb.” “I know. But if it weren’t for taking care of us, Uncle Titus would have moved to Knoxville years ago. They’d probably be married or something by now.” “Maybe so,” Abigail assented, “But that’s Titus’ choice to make.” “He didn’t have much of a choice,” Caleb countered. “There wasn’t anyone else to take care of us.” The words stung Abigail. It was true she and Jonathan had been in Louisville when Sam died, but they had been back in Little River for years now. She knew they could have relieved some of Titus’ burden. “I’m going to go find Luke,” Caleb said as he stood up. “We’re going fishing, if that’s okay. Down at the pond.” “Be careful,” Abigail admonished. Caleb laughed. “It’s just the pond. We can swim.” “Even so.” Abigail dusted off the seat of her pants, and watched Caleb disappear around the corner of the house, Jacob close behind him. She sat down on the porch swing, and pushed herself back and forth with the toe of her tennis shoe, making the rusty chain squeak. She felt extremely guilty. She never pushed Jonathan when it came to his brother, but she should have pushed him to help him take care of their sister and her boys. Now, this is funny! I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. It is tough to do inventories in Afghanistan because of the tally ban. The man who survived mustard gas and pepper spray is now a seasoned veteran. Those who get too big for their britches will be exposed in the end. No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery. Why was the ink drop sad? Because her dad was in the pen and she didn't know how long the sentence would be! The little old woman who lived in a shoe wasn't the sole owner there were strings attached. Santa's helpers are subordinate clauses. It was an emotional wedding. Even the cake was in tiers. When the smog lifts in Los Angeles, U C L A. Condoms should be used on every conceivable occasion. Marriage is the mourning after the knot before. Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now.

The Pastor’s Cat
Someone recently told a true story about the pastor of his church. He had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc. The kitty would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten. That's what he did, all the while checking his progress in the car. He then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved the car a little further forward, the rope broke. The tree went "boing!" and the kitten instantly sailed through the air-out of sight. The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they'd seen a little kitten. No. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, "Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping," and went on about his business. A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, "Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?" She replied, "You won't believe this," and then told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, "Well, if God gives you a cat, I'll let you keep it." She told the pastor, "I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won't believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws outspread, and landed right in front of her." Never underestimate the power of God, and His unique sense of humor.

Key Clean-up Principles
* The faster you clean up the mess, the easier it will be...and the less likely stains will set. * You need to clean as well as deodorize and remove the odor. That includes what you can’t smell...remember that animals have a much greater sense of smell. If animals can detect a prior pet mess or marking, they may try to mark over it. * Use nontoxic products that are specifically made for pet messes and pet odors. They are typically more effective, since they organically break down waste while neutralizing odors, and they are safer for homes with animals. But always check the label to be sure. * There are nontoxic, inexpensive cleaning solutions you can make at home using standard ingredients such as baking soda, white vinegar and club soda. * Treat stains properly to avoid permanent damage to carpets and upholstery. * It is important to remember that you must eliminate all odor. Even if you cannot smell it, companion animals can, and they will likely try to pee on or mark over the same area. They do that out of instinct, not spite. Follow these clean-up steps for wet or dried urine spots. * Soak up urine with a white towel or paper towels. Blot, don’t rub. Rubbing can damage carpet fibers. Clean starting with an area sufficiently outside of the stain ring, moving inward. * Rinse the area with water to dilute the urine. * Blot again using clean towels. * Optional but reportedly very effective: rinse the area with club soda, then blot up. * Absorb the remaining liquid with towels - stand on the towels or place heavy books over them. Be patient; it may take 6 hours to dry. To hasten the process, extract moisture using a wet/dry vacuum. If you let the carpet or upholstery stay damp, trapped moisture can lead to mildew and eventual crumbling. * Apply a cleaner/neutralizer formulated for pet messes such as Simple Solution. See suggested products below. Some contain nontoxic enzymes or safe bacteria that digest the pet mess residue. * If stains remain, try another commercial stain remover formulated for pet stains. However, do not use such products before applying enzymatic cleaners. Proper sequence is important. * Do not use ammonia, since ammonia smells somewhat like urine to animals. * Alternate cleaning/deodorizing method: cover pet accidents with baking soda, let it stand for at least two hours, then vacuum. Proceed with other steps above as needed.
