By O.I. Seenya • Why did the City of Harriman have to take out a $417,138 loan to pay off the improvements in the Historic District of Harriman? Wasn’t these upgrades supposed to be paid by a grant given by the state of Tennessee. Did someone drop the ball or what? I think the citizens of Harriman deserve an explanation. • Heard on the scanner: “There’s a snake trying to get into my dog lot and I have small kids!” (And another) “There’s a possum on my back porch!” (Our law enforcement do a lot more than write tickets and save lives). • From a 3 year old, when his grandmother jumped in the pool and came out of the water with her hair slicked back, “Nanny, your hair’s messed up, you not a nanny anymore!”
Negotiating a raise 1. When you're asked to negotiate your salary, make it firm and make it count. You have to think over the long-term. "You only have one chance to negotiate your base salary and everything else is based off of that. 2. If you learn that a coworker makes more than you, stay calm and get strategic. Rather than use emotion, name names or storm off, take a few deep breaths and do your homework. Think in terms of the added value that you bring to the team and company. When the time comes to approach your superior for the chat, never ever go for the blind side. Instead, carve out time for a sit down, one-on-one. 3. Be prepared to think like your boss. Does he or she like graphics and charts? Power point A written summary of accomplishments? Clever employees often compile reports that appeal to the boss's presentation preferences. While this move doesn't guarantee a slam dunk, choose options that set you up for success. 4. Prepare for the dreaded "no." Arm yourself by taking emotion out of the equation, and if you're told no, ask for something else instead. If money is an obstacle, what about a few more vacation days or the option to work from home a day or two a week? Ask the company to pay for classes, formal training and annual memberships to organizations such as the local Chamber of Commerce. The best part about these is that you get to take them with you wherever you go.

Delivering the Mail
About twenty years ago, I saw an ad for mail carriers in the local paper. I’ve always wanted to be a mailman. When I was young, I’d play mailman. I’d write notes to the neighbors, hop on my bicycle and placed them in all the mailboxes. (This was before I knew that was illegal). Any ways, I applied for the job. They called me in for testing, then they did a background check, which was relentless. My past must have been spotless. I got the job and then went to Knoxville for two weeks for training. I loved it! Soon after, they found me a partime position at the post office as a mail carrier. (It is now not politically correct to say mail man). My route was not in Roane County, and it was rough. I delivered mail from mountaintops with one lane gravel and dirt roads, to driving through creek beds. 911 had just been implemented and seems like no one had their new numbers on their mailboxes, and there were people with seven different last names living in one house. It was very hard for me. In fact, it was the hardest job I ever had. Not physically hard, just mentally hard. I only worked on Saturdays as a sub, but after six months, I was just as slow delivering as I was the first week. I had to admit I couldn’t do it. I thanked the postmaster, then I quit my job. But, because of my experience delivering the mail, I have a unique respect for mail carriers, and I’ve never spoken a mean word about them since. So, the next time your mail carrier stops at your mailbox, wave and tell them thank you. They work very hard for their money.

Same-sex Marriage and Churches Losing Their Tax-exempt Status
Court decision regarding same-sex marriage seemed to immediately spark a conversation surrounding the tax exemption status of U.S. churches. Since 1913, the U.S. government has formally recognized churches as being exempt from federal taxes. Churches and those who give to them benefit from the current tax exempt status. However, the likelihood of this benefit being in place in the future is now He’s young in years, but he’s lived life hard; being questioned more than ever. It is an opportunity that many around the world would cherish. 6. Pray Pray for churches. Pray for their pastors. Pray for political leaders. Pray for our society. And when you pray, ask that God will use this moment in history to bring Him glory. Because God’s agenda was never going to be determined by whether or not U.S. churches were or were not tax-exempt anyway. As Christians, we know that God is not surprised by these rulings. We know He is going to accomplish New Patients and Walk-ins His mission. And we know that one day, at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow. Until that day comes, however, we must remain faithful to the calling to which we have been called.

Facts about The Dukes of Hazzard The first five episodes were shot in northern Georgia. Street scenes for the county seat are actually from Covington, Ga. which has a small Dukes of Hazzard museum in the back of the A Touch of Country cafe. The rest of the show was filmed in California. During the filming of the pilot episode, two directors were eating breakfast in the town square of Covington when they heard a car drive by that played the opening bars to “Dixie” as the horn. This, they thought, must be in the show. They chased down the owner, bought the horn out of his car for $300, and installed it in a General Lee. The building used as The Boar’s Nest set is still around, but it’s now a church. Before the fifth season, Tom Wopat and John Schneider left the show over a merchandising royalties dispute and were replaced by actors Christopher Mayer (Vance Duke) and Byron Cherry (Coy Duke) as a different set of Duke cousins. Eventually, Wopat, Schneider, and the studio compromised and resolved their dispute. They returned before the fifth season was over. A Dukes of Hazzard convention called DukesFest was held annually from 2001 to 2007, hosted by Ben Jones. In 2004, it attracted about 25,000 people. Among its occasional features were stunt drivers jumping (and demolishing) General Lee replicas. The show used about 150 General Lees, because usually one was destroyed in each episode as a result of the stunt work. That’s a lot of Dodge Chargers, and during one period of the shows run, Warner Bros. had a shortage. So its employees left notes on the windshields of Chargers in grocery store parking lots offering to buy the cars. When the show ended, Warner Bros. had 17 General Lees left, as well as many spare parts. It invited a fan named Wayne Wooten to set up a non-profit corporation to distribute the leftovers to dedicated fans, provided that the fans never charge money for public appearances of these cars. To make the jumps work, General Lees had to be weighted down in the back to compensate for the weight of the engine in the front. The stunt managers welded steel boxes into the trunks of the cars and added weights as necessary, usually 300-400 pounds. The farther and higher a jump was, the more weight was necessary to balance the car. So that the jumping scenes were fresh, stock footage was rarely used. Each jumping scene captured on film was usually presented only once.

Choosing a Headstone or Grave Marker
Choosing a memorial headstone for a family member can be a difficult task. What type of memorial marker is appropriate? Once you know the cemetery regulations, this will help you to make your decision. Many headstones are adorned not only with the name and dates of the deceased, but also with some befitting symbolism. You may be called upon to make a decision about what is most appropriate for your loved one. It may be that you choose something that reflects an important aspect of their life or interests – something they are remembered for. Or you may just choose one of the many common symbolic themes such as angels, doves, candle, cross, lilies, palms at prayer, etc Generally these days you can chose from granite, marble and bronze as the material from which a headstone is manufactured. There are typically four main types of grave markers: Monuments (which stand upright), Slants (which are more wedge-shaped), Markers (which are typically flat) and Benches (which are designed to offer seating also). Also bear in mind that you can chose either a single or companion grave marker. As many loved ones chose to be buried together, it can often save money on a grave marker by purchasing a companion headstone. How soon can a Grave Marker be sited on a Grave? For centuries the custom of siting a grave marker has usually been the final detail in burying a loved one. For family it serves as a focal point when visiting the grave, and can provide a sense of closure, in immortalizing the memory of your loved one. How do you know the right time to place a headstone marker on the grave? While no protocol has been set in stone (pun intended) here are some things to consider. Cemetery Requirements (as mentioned above, cemeteries will have strict rules on how soon a marker can be laid). Religious Customs – some cultures traditionally have a ‘unveiling’ of a grave marker. In Jewish tradition this can be as long as one year after the deceased has been buried.

Do you want to be an extra in a future up-coming movie? Can you solve the murder of (Cole) Scott Young in Hugoton, Kansas from Mosco, Kansas? Cole was a country singer and wheat farmer. You will be a candidate for the future up-coming movie based on this true story. Cole owned two studios on Music Row, the Poly Fox and Green Tree studios. Lance Parker, an ex-convict admitted he killed Cole. Why was Parker never arrested for illegally over-serving alcohol to Cole as an autopsy indicated? Parker had been known to give out date rape drugs to males and females to weaken them. State law prohibits convicted felons from working as bartenders. How did Cole sustain a fatal blow to the back of his head, with a slap from Lance Parker to Cole's face? Police said he fell to his knees, then forward onto the sidewalk. The local people said it was a "cover-up" as usual. He was found face up and his arms crossed over his chest. Someone moved him the police said. It took two people to move Cole. Cole had cranial injuries and a massive, life threatening injury to the back of the head. Ann of Ann's Port, a bar and supper club, in nearby Hugoton, Kansas, was the first person to Cole's side after her boyfriend, Lance Parker and a friend beat him nearly to death. While her boyfriend went to take a bath to wash the blood off, he told Ann that two men assaulted him and Lance was one of them. The other mystery killer was Lance's sidekick. Cole often reported the statement on his death bed. Cole knew before he died Lance and Tammy set him up but the other killer was never on trial. Who was the other killer behind Cole?" Lance knows and Lance wasn't man enough to kill Cole by himself. It was Lance's bodyguard and Tammy and how many more? Cole's soon to be ex-wife, Tammy, plotted to kill him. Tammy was going with Lance's cousin. Those new breast work. Cole paid for Tammy to get them because her new lover wanted her to have them. Attorney Paul Kitze and Pete Olson, responsible for prosecuting Parker along with others, sold Cole out, bought off by someone within the Parker family, wealthy land owners. The wealthy get by with this. Parker's uncle, a member of the Kansas legislature, attends the trial daily and glowers at the judge from the front row. The case is prosecuted by Kansas Assistant Attorney General, Jan Fleenor, a friend of Parker's uncle, who calls only four witnesses to the stand, including Lance Parker, the "murderer". Parker is found "not guilty". He is free to go. The case is going to be opened up again, and the others will be tried again along with Tammy and even the judge that was paid off. The jury was friends of Lance Parker. The first jury was dismissed by Lance's uncle. They"ll ask the so called preacher why he didn't get Cole help. The regional televisions and newspapers said it was the biggest cover-up they had ever seen. Clearly everyone loved hard working Cole that was a wheat farmer. Cole's murder trial was the trial of the century in southwestern Kansas. Cole was a country singer. Why was Tammy Young not put on trial? They were going through a divorce for the second time. Why was the search for the second assailant never initiated??? Tammy knew Cole was going to be killed! This was the second divorce coming up. Tammy plotted the whole murder. She tried the same thing in Nashville, TN, around the time they were going through the first divorce. She admittedly told a minister minutes before the beating that Cole was going to be slain. These questions and other remain unanswered and continue. Why didn't his family-mother and sisters - insist Tammy be on trial also? Druggy Tammy sits at the local bar in that so-called town. She met Cole at a bar in Nashville, TN, where he bartended. Tammy brought her young son along with her husband, when she set out to get Cole no matter what. She told him she was pregnant- lies on her part. One of Cole's farms was sold to one of the killer's relatives. We need your thoughts and answers. You will be in the book's reply. Household Hints Relieve muscle pain from working out. Try eating bananas! They're rich in potassium, a mineral that has long been prescribed to treat leg cramps! Remove tar from clothing. Scrape off as much tar as possible, place a lump of shortening over the spot, wait three hours, then wash. Remove makeup. Wet face with lukewarm water, spread a handful of whipped cream on face, rinse clean with lukewarm water, and blot dry. Prevent water spots and soap scum on shower walls and doors. Coat the tile walls with furniture polish and wipe clean. You can also use car polish or baby oil. (Don’t get it on the floors, it will be slick.) Lessen the pain of minor cuts. Apply Krazy Glue to thin cracks in the skin. The glue deprives the nerve endings of air. Easily peel hard-boiled eggs. – (the pretty method) – Add vinegar to the water while boiling. Vinegar will soak into the eggshells and break the chemical bond between the white and the inside of the shell. Keep brown sugar soft. – Drop a piece of orange peel into an air-tight storage container with your brown sugar. This will keep the sugar from hardening and sticking together. Tame wild plastic wrap. – Store the roll in the refrigerator. Chilled plastic wrap is much easier to manage. Easily open stuck jars. – Stretch a rubber band round the lid. This will provide a good amount of extra traction to help you get the jar open. If the rubber band doesn’t work, pair that technique with the old dish towel around the lid trick and try again. Remove corn kernels the easy way. – Position corn-on-the-cob point-down against the hole of a right-side-up bundt pan. Push the cob downward and let the bundt pan do all of the work. Bonus: the pan will also collect all of the corn kernels for you, saving you more time!

HATTIE SHILLINGS It’s just too hot in August. Why not try some of these “cool” recipes to beat the heat.
Cold Tuna Macaroni Salad 3 hard-boiled eggs, diced 3 cups macaroni, uncooked 10 oz. package frozen green peas, thawed/ drained 2 (6 ounce) cans tuna, drained and flaked
1⁄2-1 cup mayonnaise 1⁄4 teaspoon salt ("or" to taste) 1⁄8 teaspoon pepper ("or" to taste) 1/3 cup Dijon mustard
Cook macaroni according to package directions, drain in colander and rinse with cold water. In a large bowl, place the macaroni and peas. Add the eggs and tuna; mix well. Mix together mayo, salt, and pepper. Add to tuna mixture a little at a time; mix well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
Cold Spiced Fruits
1 (15 ounce) can sliced peach halves in syrup 4 small cinnamon sticks 1 (15 ounce) can sliced pears in heavy syrup 1⁄4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 (14 ounce) can pineapple tidbits in syrup 1 dash ground cloves Combine all ingredients with syrups. Cover and refrigerate. Remove cinnamon sticks before serving. If desired warm fruits just before serving.
Cold Spinach Dip
10 ounces frozen spinach 8 ounces cream cheese 1 cup sour cream 1⁄4 cup green onion 1 cup mayonnaise 1⁄4 cup parmesan cheese 1 ounce vegetable soup mix 14 ounces artichoke hearts Allow cream cheese to warm to room temperature so it mixes easier with other ingredients. Thaw, drain and squeeze dry spinach. Chop green onions and artichokes hearts. Combine cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, vegetable soup mix, cream cheese, parmesan cheese, and onions (and artichoke hearts if desired). Chill for at least two hours. Serve with bread cubes or crackers. I like mine cold with vegetable flavor crackers.
Cold Deviled Eggs
6 large hard-boiled eggs 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard salt and black pepper 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish 2 tablespoons mayonnaise Peel shells off cooled hard-boiled eggs; slice into halves lengthwise. Remove yolks from whites and place in a small round bowl. Mash yolks with a fork into fine pieces. Add 2 heaping tablespoons Miracle Whip salad dressing, yellow mustard, sweet pickle relish, and salt and black pepper to taste. Stir mixture until creamy. Spoon mixture into a zip-lock sandwich bag; seal bag and snip off one corner of the bag. Squeeze mixture out of corner of bag into egg white halves. Sprinkle tops of filled deviled eggs with paprika. Chill in refrigerator 1 to 2 hours or until cold before serving.

Uses for Aloe Vera You May Not Know
Most people know that aloe vera can be used to moisturize skin, but aloe has proven itself useful in so many more unexpected ways! For someone looking to turn to homeopathic remedies, an aloe plant can be your new best friend. Heal minor kitchen burns Whether you were on the wrong side of a splash of hot oil or absent mindedly grabbed something hot off the stove, aloe has proven itself the king of minor burn care. Aloe reduces inflammation, soothes skin irritation, and combats the blistering that happens when minor burns form. For slightly more serious burns combine aloe with vitamin E. Help to prevent stretch marks Applying aloe regularly and generously increases skin’s elasticity. This means that skin will be able to stretch more readily without creating deep scarring of the tissue which results in stretch marks. Aloe plumps skin, soothes irritation, and moisturizes deeply enough to help prevent tearing in the lower dermis where stretch marks originate. Fight athlete’s foot It has anti-fungal properties which fight athlete’s foot and related fungal infections naturally. Aloe can sooth itching and help moisturize skin while drying out whatever fungal growth may be there. Calm rosacea Aloe when applied to skin can calm and lessen the appearance of rosacea. Aloe penetrates the skin eliminating common signs rosacea such as irritation and red pigmentation. Regular use of aloe can slowly begin to lessen rosacea and clear skin. Used on the face aloe can also aid in clearing up discoloration of any kind including under eye circles. Aid in digestion Many teas and coconut waters today come infused with aloe, which improves digestion and soothes any irritation in the digestive system. Some people choose to ingest raw aloe, but the taste and texture can be a bit off putting. I suggest either buying drinks already infused with aloe or adding raw aloe to hot tea in order to prevent a potential upset stomach. Remove makeup without irritating skin Aloe can act as a lubricant while removing makeup from sensitive areas like around the eyes. When aloe is used the skin is not pulled as much which lessens wrinkling and sagging of the skin in the future. Aloe also moisturizes the skin while injecting it with essential vitamins which keep the skin healthier and prevent premature aging. Reduce itching and stinging of insect bites Aloe has properties which fight the chemicals responsible for itching and discomfort from insect bites. Swabbing fresh aloe over a bite of any kind will reduce itching, inflammation, and help to prevent discoloration around the bite.

Ammonia as fertilizer. Watering soil with a mixture of two tablespoons ammonia to each quart of water will not only enrich the nitrogen content of the soil but keep black flies away. Revive ailing houseplants with Geritol. Give the plant two tablespoons of Geritol twice a week for three months. New leaves should begin to grow within the first month. Grow seeds. Use cardboard or fiber egg boxes, then plant entire tray; it'll disintegrate. Longer lasting flowers. Pick flowers during coolest part of day. Water plants on vacation. Soak soil, place plant and pot (still dripping) in a polythene bag, close bag tightly, place in position to receive indirect sunlight.

Penny Pinchers Have you gone paperless with your bills yet? If not, there are companies that will give you a discount for getting your bills via email instead of in the mail. Just ask. It worked for me with my insurance company just last month. Eat eggs. They're one of the best things nutritionally for you. Eggs happen to be a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids your body needs daily. Eating eggs is great way to go meatless at least once a week. They're not just for breakfast -some nights I'll make a frittata, a big omelette, or poached/scrambled eggs on toast. Simple, inexpensive, and delicious. Have you tried the green-onion-in-water trick? If you save the white ends of green onions, put them in water, and stick the jar somewhere sunny (mine are on my kitchen windowsill), the green onions will grow back. Forever. Be sure to change the water regularly and rinse the white ends occasionally so they don't get all slimy. Packing a lunch for yourself or your kids is a great way to save money. One way to make it even more money-saving? Skip the disposable aspect of packing a lunch. Use lunch boxes or lunch bags instead of the brown paper sack; use a reusable water bottle or a thermos instead of juice boxes, bottled water, or milk cartons; use reusable bags. A low-flow shower head can save the average household $55 per person annually. Low-flow shower heads have gotten a bad rap and for good reason. Keep a low-maintenance hair style and/or hair color. Less visits to the salon for trims and touch-ups will save money. Don't buy extended warranties. They're a waste of money Chill out when you're behind the wheel; aggressive driving costs more money. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, aggressive driving will use 33% more gas on the highway and 5% more on roads around town. We must pay attention to the price of oil. It will devastate a major industry right here in the U.S. At the moment, WTI (West Texas Intermediate) sells for $48.24 per barrel. Brent crude goes for $54.54. These prices will be different by the time you read this, but whether they're up or down, they are like swords to the heart of one industry… Frackers. Depending on a host of factors, frackers hardly break even when oil prices sit between $55 and $85 a barrel! That means, at current prices, most frackers aren't making enough to cover their debt servicing costs from the high cost of drilling! What makes it disastrous is that this industry is so highly-indebted that it puts the sub-prime mortgage fiasco and the student loan crisis to shame. Since 2012, fracking companies spend around $120 billion a year, most of which they fund with risky junk bonds or highly leveraged loans. It's no surprise that the energy sector – consisting largely of frackers – make up about 20% of the junk bond market. In 2014, 61% of junk bonds issued were in the energy sector. Just one fracking company – Continental Resources, had $140 million in debt in 2005. The oil price crash into March routed this company, which now owes around $6 billion! That's just ONE fracking company. And it's certainly not the only one. What makes this catastrophic, is that the oil price isn't going to stay in that $50 to $60 range for much longer. In very short order, we may see oil sink to $32 a barrel in the next year and then could drop all the way to as low as $10 a barrel in the next few years. The indebted fracking companies can't make their debt repayments now. It doesn't take much imagination to know what's going to happen when the bottom falls out from under oil prices. This is an epic disaster that accelerates with every day that goes by and is right here at home. There is no way around it…There is no bailing out this one. This is a warning of what is to come. Turning 35 Years Old
I know to some of you that may seem ancient. I can see forty over the horizon after all. When I was a teenager, I didn’t think too highly of the thirties either. Weddings are often done by that stage. Babies have usually been born. Career has been picked. What’s left other than to get wrinkles? But as I crest the hill of my mid-thirties I can assure you I won’t be picking out a retirement home any time soon. I’m just getting warmed up. In fact, my thirties have been some of the best, most fruitful, most fun years of my life. One major lesson I’ve learned is the wisdom that can be gleaned from women older than me. There’s gold in them thar hills if I’m willing to mine it! I don’t have life all figured out, but God has taught me some valuable lessons since high school graduation. Here are thirty-five of them. 1. God’s promises are true. expect it, the butterflies will start to flutter in your tummy once again. Fourteen years after 2. He really does have a hope and a future for me (Jer. 29:11). I married my high school sweetheart, I still get butterflies. 3. The college, major, and career I pick don’t define me. I am not my work. I am a child of 19. I’ve never met someone my age who is glad she partied in high school. Ever. I’ve met God. lots and lots of them who regretted it. There is no long-term benefit from that scene. 4. Marrying a guy who loves Jesus really, really matters. 20. You don’t need a bunch of friends. You need one or two who’ve really got your back. 5. Parents are pretty cool. Their rules are for my good. 21. Worry less about having the right friends and worry more about being the right friend. 6. Being the prettiest or most popular girl in school matters for about half a second after 22. Be picky about your friends. The Bible says it this way, “Whoever walks with the graduation. In contrast, being the kindest girl in school gets remembered well past your wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm” (Prov. 13:20). Pick wise ten-year reunion. friends. Since Proverbs 9:10 tells us that the fear of the Lord is where wisdom begins, wise 7. You will look back at pictures of you and think you were stunning. Trust me. friends need to be Jesus-loving friends. 8. Insecurity is a massive waste of time and energy. Be confident in God’s love. 23. Don’t be afraid to fail. Stand up in front of the class and give that speech. Try out for 9. “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” (Prov. 16:9). It’s the lead role in the play. You may fall on your face. You may not. okay to have a ten-year plan, but there’s a 100% chance God will interrupt it. 24. You can do big things for the kingdom now. Don’t wait to get involved in ministry. 10. The bands you listen to in high school will be your very favorite bands forever. Keep 25. Your parents don’t need to be your friends right now. They need to be your parents, the t-shirts. They will be “vintage” and awesome when you’re thirty. and that means they make and enforce the rules. The good news is, they will likely be your 11. In 1948 when I was just a young teen,I attended a gospel tent meeting, mostly to see and be seen. I had been taught the scripture about Jesus, God's only Son, but, I had plenty of time for that; As a youth I was having fun. Then the preacher preached to us Jesus and how He had died on the cross to save our souls from a burning hell and paid for each one, sins cost. Then came the invitation, and as the pianist played "Just as I am without one plea", I knew the Lord was calling to me. But, I had friends in the meeting. So, I refused in sinful pride for fear of what they would think of me if I invited the Savior inside. Then the pianist began playing "Pass me not oh Gentle Savior, hear my humble cry, while on others Thou are calling, do not pass me by". I could see the Lord coming down that aisle and looking on me with His eye. Though I already felt the need to be saved, I could see Him passing me by. So, I ran down that sawdust path and knelt at the altar to pray. I no longer cared what my friends would think; my Savior was calling today! I've never been sorry I answered that call, for He blesses my life every day. He set my feet upon a rock, and upon my Rock I'll stay. Thank you Jesus for saving my soul!

1. Being a Perfectionist Does life have to be perfect before you’re happy? If you answered yes, then you may never be happy. Setting your performance bar at an inhuman level can only lead to low self-esteem because you’ll always feel like you’re not good enough whenever you fail to achieve perfect results. We live in the real world where imperfections, failure and mistakes are part of life. The sooner you accept that, the happier you’ll become. So, how do you overcome perfectionism? Know yourself and limits, and set realistic goals that you can achieve. Most importantly, forgive yourself for your mistakes, and take necessary steps to learn from them. 2. Letting The Past Dictate Their Future Another major cause of unhappiness in many people is living in their past. If your past was riddled with bad experiences and negativity, there are high chances that your current personality mirrors this. One thing is for sure; you can’t change the past, therefore, allowing yourself to be part of it, can only pull you down. The past should be looked at as what it is, mere learning experiences. If you really think about it, whatever it is doesn’t exist anymore. Therefore there is no point dwelling in the past. You only have today, so learn to let go of your bad past experiences and focus on your present life. 3. Holding Grudges It’s very easy to allow yourself to hold a grudge against someone else. After all, it’s only natural to feel angry and harbor ill feelings against the people who have wronged you. However, what most people don’t realize is that holding grudges only destroys their own lives. You end up being more hurt than the person you’re trying to get back at. How do you let go of grudges? Learn to forgive and forget the wrongs other people have done to you, accept them for who they are, and move on with your life. 4. Engaging in Negative Self-Talk The way you speak to yourself shapes your self-image, either for better or for worse. And as you may already know, self-worth is a key component to happiness. It’s not easy to be happy when you have low self image and esteem. You can be your own best friend or your own worst enemy, because whatever you believe yourself to be, it somehow manifests because you yourself are giving it the energy it needs to realize and materialize. Instead of wasting your time and energy on negative self-talk, realize when you make mistakes, accept and learn from them, and move on. 5. Living Beyond Their Means We live in a materialistic world where we’re continuously bombarded with adverts of different products, all promising an easier and more fulfilling life. Buying a new gadget certainly makes most people feel good, but what do you do if you don’t have enough money to spend? Do you get yourself the latest SUV at the expense of your son’s college fees? I don’t think so. America continues to defy God in many ways as it heads towards the inevitable judgment. A recent example of this defiance happened when a young educated TV Analyst, out of the blue, said, “I have the right to choose, the Supreme Court gave me that right.” That unscripted statement did not trigger a reaction, much less a discussion. Why not? Could it be because our educated masses have not been taught God’s basic Commandments, Statutes, and Laws, such as, “Thou shall not kill,” “Love your neighbor,” and “teach your young women to love their children?” You bet! The TV Analyst and America seem to be unaware of The Word of God which says “it is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.” But instead of following God’s advice, America has put its trust and confidence in Man (Mankind), with tragic results. This is exactly what happened after the Supreme Court legalized abortion by its 7-9 decision. Now many, like the above analyst, politicians, and a political party, proudly support the killing of the smallest & defenseless human beings (the unborn). But how can you trust justices who do not follow God’s most basic laws, and His admonitions to protect those least able to protect themselves and always to judge in favor of the righteous and against the wicked? Such ungodliness should never be trusted. Those unjust judges will be held accountable before God for what they done. However, these judges were not held accountable here on earth as they should have. Our constitution states that judges are to hold their offices “during good behavior.” Therefore, justices who vote in favor of what God calls “wicked”, or “evil,” should be impeached and removed from office. After all, how can anyone say that judges are holding their offices in “good behavior” when they are going against God Supreme Laws? God’s wish has always been that Man (Mankind) repents of their wicked/sinful ways and seek him so they can have eternal life and be with him in heaven. You are not just flesh and bones. You have a soul which God gave you. The moment you die that soul will go to one of two places, heaven or hell. Which will it be?

Randy Weaver of Crossville, is two of two in the last month at Smoky Mountain Speedway. Weaver was the fastest qualifier on July 10th at Smoky Mountain, and he turned it into a win. Casey Roberts out of Tacoca Georgia, ran a close 2nd, with Donald McIntosh 3rd, Dennis “Rambo” Franklin 4th, Dustin Mitchell 5th, Austin Smith 6th, and Mark Douglas 7th. In the Limited Late Models it was Cory Hedgecock taking the checkers with Dakotah Knuckles 2nd, Drew Kennedy 3rd, and Dan Tipton 4th. In Sportsman Action it was Terry Poore taking the checkers with Rex Coffey 2nd, David Clark 3rd, and Adam Mitchell 4th. Free Lecture: The Evolution of Tennessee's Borders in Maps
It's easy today to think of Tennessee's borders as set in stone, but that hasn't always been the case. Those borders changed repeatedly throughout the early years of the state's history due to land grant settlements, treaties with Native Americans and even changes in the course of the Mississippi River. To help better understand how Tennessee's borders came to be where they are, map expert Murray Hudson will conduct a free lecture at the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) Aug. 15. Hudson, the owner and proprietor of Antiquarian Books, Maps, Prints & Globes in the West Tennessee community of Halls, will take lecture participants on a journey that begins along North Carolina's colonial borders, travels through the “Lost State of Franklin,” documents the annexation of Cherokee and Chickasaw territory, highlights western border changes brought about by shifts in the Mississippi River and describes Supreme Court decisions that seem to have finalized Tennessee's state boundaries. The lecture will be held from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. Aug. 15 at TSLA's auditorium in downtown Nashville. Although it is free and open to the public, reservations are required because seating in the auditorium is limited. The exhibit will be available for inspection until September during TSLA's normal operating hours, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Hudson began collecting antique maps during a summer graduate course at Oxford University in England in 1964. After teaching college, trading stocks, manufacturing bicycle trailers and farming, he turned his map collecting passion into a book and map business in 1979. Hudson used worldwide connections to create what are now three galleries of antique books, maps, prints and globes in Halls. Major institutions around the nation and here in Tennessee have his rare books, maps and prints. His galleries house 30,000 antique books, maps and prints, as well as a huge selection of American-made globes and many foreign globes. TSLA's building is located at 403 Seventh Avenue North, directly west of the State Capitol building in downtown Nashville. Parking is available in the front, on the side, and in back of the building.

Rockwood Memories By: Ray Collet How about a little history on Rockwoods football team since the season is right around the corner. Rockwood began competing in athletic events in 1921 and oddly the Tigers won that one 69-0 over Harriman. This game was played on what was known as the old Kelly lot, located where the Sanitary laundry once stood. There was no fence around the field, no bleachers, no field of well mowed Bermuda grass. The players were furnished with jerseys, stockings and pants. They had to furnish their own pads (if any) and shoes. The colors were orange and black and remained from that day to 1950 when RHS kept the nickname of "Tigers" but because of so many conflicts of colors changed to Green and White. Their first coach, Rev. Leland Cooke, pastor of First Christian Church, organized the team, coached 4 years without pay, turning over the reins in 1926 to Gene McMurray, who coached until 1929 when Ivan Donnely took over. During what was known as the war years, 9 head coaches tutored Tiger players from 1939 through 1945. The late Earl Gibson was the first captain of an RHS football team which included William Snow, George Turner, E.I. Tedder, John Elliot, Guilford Millican, Willard Stevens, Clint Collier, Frank Millican, E.T. Ingram, Elbert Haltom, Clyde Baldwin, Wade Chandler, Jim Lawrence Tarwater, Aaron Grant, Alton Janey, Morgan Clack, John McCluen, Theodore Watt, Earl Johnson, Bert Brown, Robert Collette, Tommy Brown, Morgan Brown, Ed Roberts, Bernard Rose, J.C.Mee, Eugene Johnson and Roy Haggard. Down through the years, Rockwood has turned out many excellent football and basketball teams. To pick out the best would be impossible, since the style of play within the last 25 or 30 years has changed considerably since 1921, but I would like to mention some teams with great records. The teams of 1942, 1943, and 1947 lost only one game. The teams of 1946, 1947, and 1962 lost only two, while the team of 1957 only lost but 2 games and was the winner of the Tri-County Conference. Many think the team of 1947 was the best since they were the first RHS team to play in a bowl game, defeating Clarksville 14-6 at the first annual Lions Bowl in Athens. In fact, this was the first bowl game ever played in the state of Tennessee. Clarksville, the week prior to the Bowl game, had defeated Springfield who was rated number 1 in the state. Rockwood was ranked number 5 and 6 that year. Johnny Lawson, tackle on the 1947 team is the only player from RHS to make the first team on the annual all state selection. Several have made the second, third, and honorable mention. Johnny, who weighed 235 had good speed and was signed by the University of Tennessee but changed his mind about attending U-T and attended Tennessee Tech. He played there his freshman year and was called to active duty as a member of the local National Guard in 1950 during the start of the Korean War. Upon his return three years later, he joined an industrial firm in Indiana giving up his football career. I remember in 1952, the Roane Theater sponsored a contest to let the fans determine the most outstanding player for the previous ten years. Tommy Roberts, a fleet back with the teams of 1946, 1947, and 1948, received this honor. Others in the running were Pat Evans, Johnny Lawson both of the 46-48 teams, Eddie Roberts of the years 44 and 45 and C.D. Mee from the teams of 50-51-52. Perhaps the most famous player ever to come from the Tiger Den is Coach Ray Graves. Coach Graves coached the University of Florida for many years as well as Georgia Tech as an assistant. He also served many other capacities in football. He played for the Tigers in 1936-1937, moving on to Knox Central and TMI. He joined the Vols around 1940 playing four years there. Another former RHS player who received nationwide publicity was Clarance "Shank" Knight, who played with the 1941-1942 teams and was a Student-Coach in 1943 guiding the team to a 9-1 record. Shank was a senior at RHS in 1943, ineligible to play football, he was chosen by Prof. T.R. Eustler to coach the team, since no one was available to hire because of the war, draft, and better paying industrial jobs. Only 17 years of age, he took the Tigers, and not only ran up a 9-1 mark but was ranked in the top 10 and turned out several players who received college scholarships. Among those players were Dillard Whittier and George Murray. Both played at U-T in 1944 and participated with U-T in the 1945 Rose Bowl. One of the strangest plays ever to take place occurred in 1938 when Gordon Hickey was out in the clear on his way for a touchdown against Crossville. Suddenly a Crossville player jumped from the sideline to haul down the surprised Hickey about midfield. The officials placed the ball on the One yard line and Rockwood scored on the next play. Rockwood won the game 20-0 but this was still the strangest play that has probably ever happened in RHS history. I know there have been great teams and players at RHS that I didn't mention, but just wait your turn and you will be mention somewhere down the road. It takes a few years to make the "Rockwood Memories" column. Now we'll see the out-of-wedlock birthrate in the black community drop from 75%. There will be better educational opportunities and schools in South Carolina's black communities and all across America. The black unemployment rate will drop - especially the almost 40% black teenage unemployment rate. We'll now see an economic entrepreneurial boon in the inner cities because the Confederate battle flag's been lowered. And there'll be no more gangs of blacks beating on whites - as we saw in Ohio recently. Yep, the liberal progressive media shouted "squirrel" and an entire nation went a running. All the yelling and shouting by the crowds was evidence of those who lack grace, respect and dignity. Former South Carolina Gamecocks football coach Lou Holtz remarked that when you get to the end zone, you should act like you've been there before. So what does the lowering of the Confederate battle flag have to do with the killing of little seven-year-old Amari Brown in Chicago - anyone know when his funeral is?

A penny saved is a penny taxed. There is nothing more permanent than a temporary tax. When it comes to a tax reduction, never has so little been waited for by so many for so long. Why not slap a tax on political gas? After paying all our taxes we’re tempted to call Washington and try to get ourselves declared a disaster area. Another difference between death and taxes is that death is frequently painless. You really can’t beat the game. If you earn anything, it’s minus taxes. If you buy anything it’s plus taxes. The best things in life are still free, but the tax experts are working overtime on the problem. Breathing seems to be about the only activity in this country that isn’t taxed . . . yet. The attitude of Congress toward hidden taxes is not to do away with them, but to hide them better. Increasing taxes to stop inflation makes about as much sense as fanning a fire to cool its heat.

The Mona Lisa Is Not Really the Mona Lisa
The famous painting done by Leonardo Da Vinci that everyone calls the Mona Lisa is not really called that. Its real title is La Gioconda. The woman in the painting was the wife of a man named Francesco del Gioconda, and so the painting was titled, by its creator La Gioconda. It was known for a time as the Madonna Lisa, which probably explains why it has its present name. Leonardo created this painting over many years, beginning in 1503. When he finished it is debated by historians. He also painted many other things, building sculptures, and making new inventions. As for her famous smile, art historians still debate why she is smiling and what that smile represents. One last thing: Did you ever notice that women in this time had no eyebrows? It's true. Look closely. Women at that time were considered more beautiful if they had their eyebrows shaved.
Most Eskimos Don't Live in Igloos
The igloo is the most common symbol identified with Eskimos, yet most Eskimos don't live in what most people think an igloo is. Igloo is simply the Eskimo word for "house." So, most Eskimos DO live in igloos, as they define them, but not as most people think. Mainly through the use of cartoons, people have long thought that Eskimos live in the rounded ice houses in order to keep warm in the cold climates in which they live. This might have been true originally, but it's not true now. Nowadays, Eskimos live in wood, stone, and even cement buildings. They have heating devices that keep them warm in the colder months.
The Way to School
The new family in the neighborhood overslept and their six-year-old daughter missed her school bus. The father, though late for work himself, had to drive her. Since he did not know the way, he said that she would have to direct him to the school. They rode several blocks before she told him to turn the first time, several more before she indicated another turn. This went on for 20 minutes – but when they finally reached the school, it proved to be only a short distance from their home. The father, much annoyed, asked his daughter why she’d led him around in such a circle. The child explained, “That’s the way the school bus goes, Daddy. It’s the only way I know.”

Microchipping Your Dog A microchip is very small. In fact it is about the size of a grain of rice. This device is implanted at the back of your pet’s neck and serves as a permanent method of electronic identification. Each chip has its own unique number and is scanned using a microchip scanner. Once implanted and scanned, this number is recorded onto a database registry with the pet and owner’s details. If your pet strays or becomes lost, this microchip can be scanned at a vet giving details of where you can be contacted. It is very important that you keep your contact details up to date when you move or change your phone number. If these details are not updated and your pet gets lost, there is no way of contacting you. This decreases the likelihood of being reunited with your pet. The RSPCA says that ‘ideally your pet cat or dog should be microchipped prior to you purchasing or adopting your pet. This is the only way to effectively trace the origin of the cat/dog. However, if your pet is not yet microchipped then we recommend that you make an appointment to do so with your vet (even in those states where microchipping is not yet compulsory).’ They go on to say that if your pet is adopted by another owner, it is up to the new owner to ensure that the contact details on the microchip are updated and recorded on the database.

Pet’s Page Caring for your Guinea Pig Water: Guinea pigs drink a lot. Make sure you change the water daily to provide fresh water. A drip bottle filled with fresh water should always be available. Pellets: Dye free, high quality pellets must be placed in a heavy bowl to prevent tipping. Avoid pellets when the primary ingredient is corn. Most quality guinea pig pellets are alfalfa based. These pellets are especially suitable for young, growing and pregnant guinea pigs; Grass Hay: Unlimited high quality grass hay should be available for your guinea pig at all times. It helps them maintain a healthy digestive system, and prevents teeth from over growing; Vegetables: Around ½ cup of fresh vegetables are an important addition to your guinea pig’s diet. They will provide them with extra nutrients. Iceberg lettuce should not be given due to its high water content. Mesculin mix, tomato, green or red pepper, spinach are all good choices. Do not serve your guinea pigs wilted or spoilt vegetables. Exercise: Essential for your guinea pig. Daily exercise helps them maintain good health. Find an enclosed space that is easily cleanable such as a bathroom. Your pet will look forward to the extra space you provide for them. Try hiding their treats in the area to provide fun for them.

Birds as Pets Birds come in all shapes and sizes. When making the decision to choose a bird for a pet, it is important to investigate the many kinds of birds and the one you think may be the right one for your household. It is important you decide before you head to a breeder, bird rescue or pet store. Once you have decided and made a commitment to caring for your bird, it will be hard to then realize that the decision you made was not the right decision after all. When it comes to caring for your pet bird, there is much that needs to be considered: Housing Pet birds need to be able to express their normal behavior. Therefore, those that are permanently confined to living in a cage should still be able to have access to flight. This could be in an aviary or they could be given regular opportunities to spread their wings and fly in a safe, indoors environment. When it comes to cages, ask your vet about the required cage size for your bird. Cages should be regularly cleaned. Being Social Most birds are highly sociable and intelligent creatures, so need lots of stimulation. It is better to keep two birds together (of the same gender), rather than one by themselves. All birds will love appropriate toys such as bird bells, swings, mirrors. In order to keep their birds trim, birds enjoy gnawing on bird specific wooden chew toys. Feeding In the wild, birds eat a varied diet. It is important therefore to provide your bird with a variety of foods. This included the commercially bought food plus natural foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, seeding grasses, native flowers and green foods. Always check with your vet to ensure the foods that you are giving or thinking of giving are appropriate and are non-toxic for your bird. Fresh water should be given daily or throughout the day as needed. It should be placed as high as possible to prevent spillage or getting dirty. Food should be changed regularly.

We issue vouchers each month to Planned Pethood. We are working with Mark Neely at the Rockwood City Animal Shelter in his established pet food pantry. We educate others about the importance of spaying and neutering, vaccinating, caring for, and properly vetting pets. We are a not for profit organization. We are not a 501c3.
