Seenya • By a young female driver in a local convenient store: “Can I buy Chevron gas, even if I don’t have a Chevy?” • Over 100 people showing up for the 2014 Emory River Rats Annual Belly Flop Contest. The competition was so intense, one of the judges fell backwards in her chair. • Kittrell’s Kitchen on Gallaher Road, getting ANOTHER score of 100 on their health inspection. • Several people really irritated because there was a $5 fee to park near the fireworks and city park on July 4th, especially on county school property • Two local law enforcement officers taking time to pray together over their food in McDonald's.
Roane County Museum of History The Old Historic Roane County Courthouse in Kingston is one of only seven remaining antebellum courthouses in the state and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A combined Greek Revivalist and Federalist style, it was built from 1854 to 1855 by architect Augustus Fisher and designer Fredrick B. Guenther, using native lumber and bricks made... The Roane County Heritage Commission (RCHC) was deeded the courthouse in 1974. The RCHC is a fully tax exempt corporation and governed by a board. Their activities are paid with grants and membership dues. The Archives Library and museum are managed by Historian Robert Bailey and his assistant, Darleen Trent. Precious Memories By: Kay Christopher
Lake Winnepesaukah Mama was a very futile person. She watched every penny she spent, and didn’t spend. Because of that, we had enough money to have some special fun. Every summer, she and daddy gave all us kids our pick of either going to Lake Winnepesaukah or Chillhowie Park and the zoo. At that time, the zoo was really primitive, and didn’t have many animals, but Chillhowie Park was another story. They had a permanent amusement park that was unlike anything around, except for Lake Winnepesaukah. Our favorite place was Lake Winnie. We’d load up the big, old, car and head out to Chattanooga. I remember going through the tunnel just before we got there, and daddy always blowing his horn. (In the south, this is a must). When we finally got there, we’d have a picnic in the dirt parking lot (this was about 55 years ago). Then all the kids went in different directions to their favorite rides. Well, all except me. I was the baby of the family, and I was too young to run with the others, so I stayed with Mama and Daddy. We’d walk around watching all the people on the rides. If I rode one, I had to do it alone, except for one ride. Daddy always rode it with me. It was called the Caterpillar, and it was a small roller coaster for kids. I so looked forward to riding it with daddy. I don’t know if the ride really scared him, or if he was just pretending, but boy, I had fun. I also remember the arcade area. There was an old coin machine that had a very scary mannequin gypsy woman in it. You would put a penny in the slot, and she would move and lay cards around. One of them would fall out of the machine, and it had your fortune on it. It was so creepy. I used to stare at the painted lady and feel sorry for her because she couldn’t get out of the glass and metal enclosure. After a full day at the park, we’d all meet back at the car and have mama’s homemade banana pudding. On the way home, everyone was exhausted, but excited to tell of the tremendous fun they had. Lake Winnepesaukah is still open to the public. A lot has been added, but a lot of the original park still remains. My childhood created many memories of family, friends, and fun. Have you made any happy memories with your family lately? With video games, and computers, etc. kids aren’t exposed to the good things in life that we were. What will your kid’s and grand kid's memories of childhood be? Get out and make some with them, it may be the only happy ones they have.

A funeral service is being held in a church for a woman who has just passed away. At the end of the service, the pallbearers carrying the casket accidentally bump into a wall jarring the casket. They hear a faint moan. They open the casket and find that the women is actually alive. She lives for 10 more years and then dies. A ceremony is again held at the same church and at the end the pallbearers are again carrying the casket out. As they are walking, the husband calls out, "Watch out for the wall!"

Old Sidekicks
GEORGE "GABBY" HAYES was born in 1885 and died in 1969. Gabby was the most famous of all the "Sidekicks" of the western stars and along with Smiley Burnette placed in the top 10 of western stars on several occasions even though they were not the featured actors in their films. Two things remembered are Gabby saying in every film were, "You young whipper snapper!" and "You're durn tooting." Gabby did not get into films until age 44 and with that nasal voice and gray beard he was very recognizable. Unlike his image, Gabby was well read, well groomed and a serious investor. ANDY DEVINE was born in 1905 and died in 1977. He had a childhood injury to his vocal chords which gave him that raspy voice that became his trademark. Andy was in over 400 films and was Roy Rogers' sidekick as Cookie. He became even more famous as sidekick on television to Guy Madison as Jingles. He went from B movies to A movies and appeared with the likes of John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart who both attended his funeral. PAT BRADY made over 70 films and was part of the group known as The Sons of the Pioneers that appeared in many of Roy Rogers' films. He would continue to sidekick with Roy on television for years to come. Pat was born in 1914 and died in 1972. Pat's jeep was named Nellybelle. SLIM PICKENS was born Louis Burton Lindley, Jr. in 1919 and died in 1983. He was sidekick to Rex Allen before moving on to A movies such as Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb in 1964 which leaves an image in our minds of Slim riding a bomb out of his plane headed for Russia. Slim had his start in the rodeo where he rode broncos and was a clown. JOHN WAYNE born Marion Robert Morrison in 1907 and died in 1979. We all know about his history in films. However, most of you probably do not know that he started out in the B films and was a sidekick named Duke to Tim McCoy. The rest of the Duke's film career is legendary. SMILEY BURNETT born Lester Alvin Burnette in 1911 and died in 1967 would make over 165 film and television appearances, 80 of those with Gene Autry and also was sidekick for Sunset Carson and the Durango Kid. Smiley and Gene made their film debut together in 1934 in Old Santa Fe. He was actually known as Gene's sidekick, Frog Milhouse for the frog like sounds he made. JAY "TONTO" SILVERHEELS born Harold J. Smith in 1912 and died in 1980. He made over 100 films including some major films like Key Largo with Humphrey Bogart. However, he will always be remembered as the Lone Ranger's sidekick, Tonto. He was the son of a Mohawk chief and was a decent lacrosse player and boxer before getting into films. Nine-year-old Joey was asked by his mother what he had learned in Sunday School. Well, Mom, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches. Do not lie on concrete floors, and do not lean against concrete walls. Last Resort Outdoor Risk Reduction Tips If you are caught outside with no safe shelter anywhere nearby the following actions June reduce your risk: Immediately get off elevated areas such as hills, mountain ridges or peaks Never lie flat on the ground Never shelter under an isolated tree Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter Immediately get out and away from ponds, lakes and other bodies of water Stay away from objects that conduct electricity (barbed wire fences, power lines, windmills, etc.)

Pickled Watermelon
9 cups water 5 cups sugar 1/2 cup salt 1 cinnamon stick 11 cups watermelon pieces (cut from 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger rind, seeded, and cut into 1-inch cubes) 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2-1/2 cups white vinegar In a large bowl, stir the water and salt together. Add the watermelon and let stand overnight. Drain the watermelon, rinse, and drain again. In a large saucepan, combine the vinegar, sugar, cinnamon stick, ginger, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil and add the watermelon. Return to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove the cinnamon stick. Loosely pack the watermelon into jars. Return the syrup to a boil for 30 minutes. Pour over the fruit in the jars and seal. Process in a boiling-water bath for 15 minutes.
Pasta with Fresh Tomato Sauce
1 to 1-1/2 pounds fresh ripe tomatoes 1/2 cup ripe or oil-cured black olives (4 or 5 large beefsteak-type tomatoes salt and freshly ground pepper to taste or 8 to 10 plum tomatoes) pinch red pepper flakes 1/2 cup olive oil 2 to 3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 16 ounces dried capellini or vermicelli At least 2 hours before serving, prepare the sauce. Remove the stems and cores from the tomatoes. Slice them in half through the stem end and squeeze out and discard the seeds, leaving as much moisture as possible in the tomatoes. Chop the tomatoes and place in a glass or porcelain bowl. Add the oil and toss lightly. Add the garlic, olives, salt and pepper, pepper flakes, and basil. Toss lightly. Set aside at room temperature to allow the flavors to develop. Cook the pasta in plenty of boiling salted water according to the package directions. Place the drained pasta in a large serving bowl, add the tomato sauce, and toss well. Serve at once.

Freeze Your Tomatoes
Get the most out of your summer tomato's by freezing them so you can use them all year long. The simplest way to freeze tomatoes is to just throw them in a freezer safe ziploc bag and stick them in the freezer. When you need to use them the skins will comes off really easily after being frozen. Or you can do a more detailed process starting with blanching. Cut an X into the bottom of your tomato and put the tomatoes into boiling water for about 60 seconds. And then add to a bowl of ice water. Once cooled, peel the skin from the tomatoes and place them in a freezer safe ziploc bag. You can cut or chop up the tomatoes if you desire, but not required. You can freeze tomatoes up to 10 months.

Challenging a Muslin This is a true story and the author, Rick Mathes, is a well-known leader in prison ministry. The man who walks with God always gets to his destination. If you have a pulse you have a purpose. The Muslim religion is the fastest growing religion per capita in the United States, especially in the minority races! Last month I attended my annual training session that's required for maintaining my state prison security clearance. During the training session there was a presentation by three speakers representing the Roman Catholic, Protestant and Muslim faiths, who each explained their beliefs. I was particularly interested in what the Islamic had to say. The Muslim gave a great presentation of the basics of Islam, complete with a video. After the presentations, time was provided for questions and answers. When it was my turn, I directed my question to the Muslim and asked: 'Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that most Imams and clerics of Islam have declared a holy jihad [Holy war] against the infidels of the world and, that by killing an infidel, (which is a command to all Muslims) they are assured a place in heaven. If that's the case, give me the definition of an infidel?' There was no disagreement with my statements and, without hesitation, he replied, 'Non-believers!' I responded, 'So, let me make sure I have this straight. All followers of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who is not of your faith so they can have a place in heaven. Is that correct?' The expression on his face changed from one of authority and command to that of a little boy who had just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.' He sheepishly replied, 'Yes.' I then stated, 'Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine The Pope commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faith or Dr. Stanley ordering all Protestants to do the same in order to guarantee them a place in heaven!' The Muslim was speechless! I continued, 'I also have a problem with being your friend when you and your brother clerics are telling your followers to kill me! Let me ask you a question: Would you rather have your Allah, who tells you to kill me in order for you to go to heaven, or my Jesus who tells me to love you because I am going to heaven and He wants you to be there with me?' You could have heard a pin drop as the Imam hung his head in shame. Needless to say, the organizers and/or promoters of the 'Diversification' training seminar were not happy with my way of dealing with the Islamic Imam, and exposing the truth about the Muslims' beliefs. In twenty years there will be enough Muslim voters in the U.S. to elect the President! I think everyone in the WORLD should be required to read this, but with the ACLU, there is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us tells someone! Facts about the American Flag
1. Betsy Ross is widely credited with designing the first American flag, but there is almost no evidence to support that claim. The only records of Ross' involvement came from her own grandson in 1870, when he presented the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with affidavits from his own family members as evidence. Instead, many historians believe that Francis Hopkinson deserves the credit, because early journals from the Continental Congress are said to explicitly name him as the flag's designer. 2. Karen Burke of Walmart's Corporate Communications revealed that Walmart stores sold around 115,000 American flags on September 11, 2001, as compared to 6,400 flags on the same date in 2000. In the year following 9/11 (September 11, 2001, through August 19, 2011), they sold 7.8 million American flags as compared to 2.5 million the year before. 3. A 17-year old student designed the flag as it appears today. In anticipation of Alaska and Hawaii becoming states, Robert G. Heft created the 50-star flag as part of a history project (for which he received a B-) before submitting it to Congress for consideration. In August of 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower chose Heft's design over 1,500 other applicants and informed him of the news over the phone. (Heft's teacher also changed his grade to an A). 4. During the opening sequence (about 22 seconds in) of first-season episodes of "Gilligan's Island," the U.S. Flag can be seen flying at half-staff off in the distance. This is because the shows pilot episode finished filming on November 22, 1963 — the same day that President Kennedy was assassinated. 5. Despite the harsh temperatures and conditions of the moon's atmosphere, five of the six flags that were planted during the Apollo missions are still standing. According to Buzz Aldrin, the one that fell was blown over by the exhaust from Apollo 11 during its liftoff from the moon's surface. 6. Flag Day isn't technically a federal holiday, and it's not a state holiday outside of Pennsylvania and New York. Furthermore, New York's official observance of Flag Day isn't June 14 (when it's commonly celebrated), but rather the second Sunday in June. 7. There are federal regulations governing the handling and display of the flag (the U.S. Flag Code), including restrictions on using the flag's likeness for advertising, or printing it on anything intended "for temporary use or discard," like cocktail napkins or paper plates. Under the Flag Protection Act of 1989, there are also federal laws that call for criminal penalties for certain forms of flag desecration, although the Supreme Court found this act to be unconstitutional under the First Amendment in 1990. 8. Old Glory was actually the nickname of a specific U.S. Flag, namely, the one owned by sea captain William Driver. He was previously given the flag by the women in his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts, but he only named it Old Glory upon seeing it flying on his ship's mast in 1831. The name later went on to become synonymous with any American flag.

They mean a lot to me, I love animals, and I love to learn more about them. I feel so bad for Stray dogs; they don’t deserve to be treated like that. God didn’t create animals to be abused, beaten, or starved, he made them as a man’s friend, to help and just even save you a lot of work. Chickens can eat the bugs, rabbits and cows eat grass, horses can get you places, dogs make you happy, and hunt great. Animals can look dumb sometimes, and mean, but also nice and smart. Animals are some of Gods wonderful creations.

Save BIG $$$$ When You Go Out To Eat Use Restaurant.com. Restaurant.com sells coupons to various local restaurants. The “regular price” for a $25 gift certificate is $10 but you should never have to pay that much. Sign up for their email list and they will constantly send you coupon codes for anywhere between 70% and 80% off. Therefore you can get a $25 gift certificate for only $2. However, make sure to read the fine print, as most certificates have minimum purchase requirements. For example in order to use most $25 certificates, you need to spend at least $35. These are wonderful if you go out in groups. Once I bought a $50 certificate for $4 (you had to spend at least $100 at the place to use it), and I went with 5 of my friends. We got drinks, appetizers, and a meal and we all ended up spending just over $10 a piece. If you’re not a follower of Groupon or Living Social yet, follow them right now. What they do is offer a coupon for purchase that is only available for 24 hours. About 80-90% of the time these coupons are for restaurants. You can get on the mailing list for Groupon.com and LivingSocial.com. I highly recommend both of them. Ever wonder why some menus list their prices without dollar signs? Did you ever consider while flipping through a menu that some sort of business strategy was involved in it’s design? I haven’t. I’m always concerned with deciding what to eat and looking for the most help in eliminating the options. Clever restaurants are happy to oblige by implementing tactics designed to steer you toward the most profitable items. Here’s how they do it: Breakdown: You pick a category, pasta, steak, chicken, etc. Did you know that customers statistically order the first item on the list in the category they choose? That’s where the clever restaurateur places the items with the highest margin of profit – mainly chicken. Highlight: If you see a menu option that’s boxed off, it’s probably making the restaurant a good chunk of change. It’s meant to draw your attention and it works. Shuffle: Popular items that are harder to prepare and less profitable for the restaurant are more difficult to find on a smart menu. They get lost in the shuffle while low cost high profit choices are easier for you to see. $23.00 or 23?: Of course you’ve got to pay, but most people get squeamish about seeing dollar signs on a menu. Many menus show just a number in an attempt to keep the concept of payment as abstract as possible. Portion size: The up sell is used to get you to buy more than you want at a price you feel is fair, or even a good deal. You think you are getting much more food for only a little more money. Many times package deals are highlighted while the a la cart item you really want is shuffled. This is a strategy that usually involves more profit for them. If you itemize a value meal it doesn’t look that great. Fries and soda cost nothing to them, but you can easily double the cost by adding them to a sandwich. If you have a choice on plate size and want to know which dish gives you more value the $9 or the $12. It’s neither. The $12 is a decoy. Your supposed to choose the smaller dish. It’s a win/win for them.

My Attorney
Author Unknown After living what I felt was a "decent" life, my time on earth came to the end. The first thing I remember is sitting in a chair in what I thought was a court room. As I looked around I saw the "prosecutor." He was villainous looking who snarled as he stared at me. He definitely was the most evil person I have ever seen. I sat down and looked to my left and there sat My Attorney, a kind and gentle looking man whose appearance seemed so familiar to me, I felt I knew Him. The corner door flew open and there appeared the Judge in full flowing robes. He commanded an awesome presence as He moved across the room I couldn't take my eyes off of Him. As He took His seat behind the bench, He said, "Let us begin." The prosecutor rose, "My name is Satan and I am here to show you why this man belongs in hell." He proceeded to tell of lies that I told, things that I stole, and In the past when I cheated others. Satan told of other horrible perversions that were once in my life and the more he spoke, the further down in my seat I sank. I was so embarrassed that I couldn't look at anyone, even my own Attorney, as the Devil told of sins that even I had completely forgotten about. As upset as I was at Satan for telling all these things about me, I was equally upset at My Attorney who sat there silently not Offering any form of defense at all. I know I had been guilty of those things, but I had done some good in my life - couldn't that at least equal out part of the harm I'd done? Satan finished with a fury and said, "This man belongs in hell, he is guilty of all that I have charged and there is not a person who can prove otherwise." When it was His turn, My Attorney first asked if He might approach the bench. The Judge allowed this over the strong objection of Satan, and beckoned Him to come forward. As He got up and started walking, I was able to see Him in His full splendor and majesty. I realized why He seemed so familiar; this was Jesus representing me, my Lord and my Savior. He stopped at the bench and softly said to the Judge, "Hi, Dad," and turned to address the court. "Satan was correct in saying that this man had sinned, I won't deny any of these allegations. And, yes, the wage of sin is death, and this man deserves to be punished." Jesus took a deep breath and turned to His Father with outstretched arms and proclaimed, "However, I died on the cross so that this person might have eternal life and he has accepted Me as his Savior, so he is Mine." My Lord continued with, "His name is written in the book of life and no one can snatch him from Me. Satan still does not understand yet. This man is not to be given justice, but rather mercy." As Jesus sat down, He quietly paused, looked at His Father and said, "There is nothing else that needs to be done. I've done it all." The Judge lifted His mighty hand and slammed the gavel down. The following words bellowed from His lips.. "This man is free." The penalty for him has already been paid in full. Case dismissed." As my Lord led me away, I could hear Satan ranting and raving, "I won't give up, I will win the next one." I asked Jesus as He gave me my instructions where to go next, "Have you ever lost a case?" Christ lovingly smiled and said, "Everyone that has come to Me and asked Me to represent them has received the same verdict as you, ....... Paid In Full.

With the local elections right around the corner, I thought it might fun to take a trip back to Rockwood High School and the year 1951 . Boy's and Girl's County was an election in school sponsored by the local American Legion Post. Superintendent of Schools, T.R. Eutsler, conducted the election on a very high plane. He said it was a profitable experience. Campaign managers were appointed, speeches and platforms were presented, streamers, signs and candidate cards were in evidence everywhere. Here are some of the candidates and the winners. How many names do you remember? County Judge....Wheeler Rodgers and Boyd "Rusty" Giles.....Winner , Wheeler Rodgers. County Court Clerk.....Bill Spurling and Welzie Swafford.........Winner, Welzie Swafford County Attorney .......Bill Leffew and Jack Lindsay..................Winner Bill Leffew Trustee ................ Charles Hill and Peggy Pemberton........Winner Charles Hill Circuit Court Clerk......Opal Little and Kenneth Walker ...........Winner Kenneth Walker Tax Assessor.............Junior Burdette and Paul King..............Winner Paul King Register of Deeds.......Kendall Morgan ( Unopposed) County Health Doctor....Eugene Payne and Betty R. I remember the elections that we used to have...Do the schools still do that ? Clymersville was really a great community to grow up in. There was almost as many communities in Rockwood as the "nicknames" I wrote about earlier. Let's see....Clymersville, Mt. View or as it was commonly called, The Crawdad Hole, Eagle Lodge, Eagle Furnace, Glen Alice, Abel's Valley, Black Jack, Winton Chapel, Post Oak, Pond Grove, Fairview, New Hope, Eureka. There were all kind of hollows. Joiner Hollow, Black Hollow, Bradshaw Hollow, Poland Hollow. And Old Town, Dog Town and who remembers where Seko Flats was.? Burl Renfro said he was born on Poor Row. That was South Kingston Ave. near the old Highway Patrol Station. The reason for the name, according to Burl is the first house built there was by a family named Poor. I asked Burl about a tale that I used to hear about his dad riding a homemade wagon off of the mountain from Westel to the Junction. Burl said he wasn't rightly sure but he heard the same tale and it was probably true. The tales Burl could spin. I have been reading some 1951 Rockwood Times and there was really a lot going on then. So many clubs and organizations. Even a Rockwood Business club sponsored a drive to finance 4-Way Stop Signs at every city intersection. Fifteen hundred dollars was needed to erect 14 of them with steel poles. A house to house canvass asking one dollar per person or household, and five dollars from a business was conducted raising Four Hundred dollars so far. I wonder if those are the ones still standing from 1951 ? And a circus was due in town in the area where Rocky Top is now located on the corner of Gateway and Rockwood St. Admission was thirty cents for children and sixty cents for adults. Talk about a bargain.!! The Rockwood High School graduating class of 1951 was depleted due to Armed Forces callups. According to the Rockwood Times, twenty-four girls and sixteen boys graduated. The valedictorian that year was Marie Hamby and Minoka Pickrell was the salutatorian. High honors went to Philip Holwager,Jeanne Seward, Sue Haley, Opal Little, Jack Lindsay, Sue Friend and Ruth Nelson. One other thing caught my eye in 1951, It was Ruth Nelson, Phil Holwager, Jack Lindsay, David Poole, Jack Huff and E.H. Fox have been practicing all summer perfecting a dance band. Their first dance will be given at the Rockwood Community Park. Does anyone recall the name of this band ? And check this out, with the price of gasoline getting higher each day this is a vacation special listed in the Times. Greyhound Bus Lines is offering a 4 days 2 nights hotel lodging for $48.44. And a Florida vacation consisting of ten days, eight nights hotel accommodations, consisting of two in Tampa, three in Jacksonville, and three in Miami. Also admission to Marine Studios, Marine Land, a glass bottom boat trip at Silver Springs. Sightseeing in St. Petersburg and a boat cruise of the Miami Beach waterfront. All of this for $82.71. Sounds like a real deal to me. I wonder if any tickets are left.... Well friends that winds up another stroll. 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Watermelon
No other produce screams summer quite like watermelon. Thing is, there’s more to watermelon than just its flavor: It boasts some powerful health benefits, too. At 46 calories per cup, watermelon offers 20% of your daily intake of vitamin C and 17% vitamin A, according to the USDA. That’s not all. Watermelon contains dietary fiber for digestive health as well as potassium, a mineral that helps keep blood pressure capped Here are some fun facts to celebrate watermelon. It has more lycopene than raw tomatoes In just one cup, watermelon has 1.5 times the stuff than a large fresh tomato, 6 milligrams compared to 4 milligrams, according to the USDA. That matters because lycopene is thought to act as a super antioxidant, stopping free radicals from damaging your cells and messing with your immune system. Some research even suggests that lycopene, typically found in red fruits and vegetables, may help fight heart disease and several types of cancer. Pro tip: “To retain the most antioxidants in this delicious superfood, store your watermelon at room temperature before slicing,” Sass says. The juice can relieve muscle soreness A Spanish study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that drinking watermelon juice can actually be quite soothing after a grueling workout. Athletes who consumed a little more than 16 ounces an hour before exercise had less muscle soreness and a lower heart rate within a day. That may be because watermelon contains a natural substance called citrulline that’s been tied to improved artery function and lower blood pressure. In fact, its ability to relax the blood vessels led Texas A&M University researchers to say watermelon has Viagra-like effects. But you’ll need to look beyond the pink flesh if you really want to load up on citrulline—it’s concentrated most in the rind. If that’s not your thing, you can always save it for pickling or preserving later, Sass says. It’s a fruit AND a vegetable Talk about an overachiever. Like most fruits, watermelon is the product of a seed-producing plant and has a signature sweet taste. But it can be traced back to the squash, pumpkin, and cucumber family known as Cucurbitaceae. It’s packed with, well, water Now this is a food with some serious hydration power. Watermelon is 91.5% water, according to the USDA. That’s a big deal seeing as how being dehydrated is bad for your health. A study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that women with even mild dehydration experienced headaches, poor concentration, fatigue, and worse moods. There’s a yellow variety It’s hard to believe there’s a watermelon that’s NOT pink on the inside, but there’s another variety, known as Yellow Crimson, has a sunny interior and the flesh has a sweeter, honey-like taste. Thing is, the two are nearly identical on the outside, so unless you’re reading the signs at your grocery store or farmers’ market, it can be hard to tell which is which. If you want the regular pink watermelon, ask for a Crimson Sweet.

Pro Forecasters and Individuals… Are They Reading Tea Leaves?

Tipping can be daunting. Are there situations where billion has been added to equity mutual funds and exchange-traded funds in the past year, 10 times tipping isn't necessary? more than the previous 12 months, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and the Investment Company Institute. At the same time, various big-name forecasters are predicting the “stock market will be stagnant.” They further observe “valuations are at four-year highs.” Individuals pile into equities while the pros pull out? The knee-jerk response is to run for gold, or low paying bank CD’s or Money Market accounts or whatever your favored disaster trade might be. Unfortunately, it is never quite that simple. A little bit of perspective explains why neither of these indicators is of much significance. Let’s begin with the forecasting portion of our discussion. The abilities of strategists and economists to foresee the future run from merely terrible to embarrassingly stupid. Someone gets it right each year more or less by accidental, but there is little reason to put much faith in the predictions of the “experts”. As we have witnessed, expert forecasts are statistically indistinguishable from hit and miss guesses. And, there is little or no penalty for being wildly inaccurate. None of the pros forecasted last year's 30-percent-plus rally in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index. In the beginning of this year, all 72 economists surveyed by Bloomberg predicted higher rates and falling bonds. Treasuries have rallied about 10% so far this year as yields fell to low levels. Now that we are reminded how awful the pros are in forecasting markets, are the individual investors any better? As it turns out, they are even worse. First, they chase performance, not value. At best, they are a lagging, not leading, indicator. Secondly, individuals don't move the markets very much. Money flows into equities have been negative for almost the entire rally since the March 2009 lows. If we can't rely on strategists’ or economists’ forecasts, and individuals' trading is of no value as an indicator, what should we be looking at? I would suggest perhaps, two areas worthy of your attention: Institutional flows and extremes in sentiment. The day-to-day flows into retirement accounts, exchange-traded funds, pension funds and 401(k)s have been creating a fairly steady demand for equities. If and when that reverses, it will be much closer to the end of the bull cycle than the beginning. Once individuals become enthusiastic stock investors again, that will be near the end. It would be the opposite of the retreat we saw in March 2009, and would represent a buying top. Be forewarned: It takes more than a few months of stock buying for that full-on exuberance to make an appearance. When former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan described the “irrational exuberance” of stock investors in 1996, it took a few more years until that top was reached. That was years ago… Today, due to recent memories of losses, the public investor is avoiding the risks of stock market investing. Many investors who are approaching retirement or in retirement are interested in strong guarantees against loss of principal rather than gambling in the markets. 2014 Emory River Rats Annual Belly Flop If you weren’t at Sportsman's Club Road on July 13th for the 7th Annual Belly Flop contest--then you missed the fun of a lifetime! Over 100 people gathered for the fun and to either watch or win some of the prizes, trophies, and cash that were being handed out. Official judges tally up their scores to decide who the belly flop champion is. The contest is taken very seriously by the judges and the participants. The Flop takes place every year at the home of the founder of the Emory River Rats, Larry “Catfish” Lemons and is hosted Winners Bellyflop 1st: Max Stout (middle) 2nd: Josh King by him and his daughter, Missi (left) 3rd: Justin Stout (right) Jay Strickland (not pictured) Scandlyn. Belly Flopping isn’t the only competition, though. Some winners of other games were: Hula Hoop Endurance - Brooke Davis & Ryleigh Bolden. Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest winner was Justin Stout. (Yes, the co-owner of The Roane Reader (Justin also tied for 3rd place in the belly flop). The winners of the kid’s Belly Flop contest was 4 year old Ta’Naya Scandlyn who won $50, 2nd place was Hub Fisher with Abby Stout coming in 3rd. The adult 2014 Emory River Rat’s 7th Annual Belly Flop Contest winner was -- Max Stout winning $100.00, 2nd place was Josh King $50.00, and 3rd place ended in a tie for Justin Stout and Jay Strickland winning $12.50 each. Actual Insurance Reports To avoid a collision I ran into the other car. A pedestrian hit me and went under my car. I thought the side window was down but it was up, as I found when I put my head through it. If the other driver had stopped a few yards behind himself the accident would not have happened. She suddenly saw me, lost her head and we met. Cow wandered into my car. I was afterwards informed that the cow was half-witted. Three women were talking to each other and when two stepped back and one stepped forward I had to have an accident. There were plenty of lookers-on but no witnesses. A bull was standing near and a fly must have tickled him because he gored my car.
Fish and Lightening
Why don't all the fish die when lightning strikes the ocean? Water conducts the electricity to diffuse the energy. Lightning strikes the oceans all the time; but not all fish get electrocuted when this happens. Within a thundercloud way up in the sky, many small frozen raindrops bump into each other as they move around in the air. All of those collisions create an electric charge. When the charge is strong enough the energy is released into the air and pushes straight through the air to the ground. This bolt of energy or "current" is the lightning streak. When something is struck by lightning, it is because the current of electricity passes from the sky through their body on the way to the ground. Sea water conducts the electricity, so when the current enters it, the lightning spreads out in all directions. Any fish in the way would probably only experience a small amount of current and would not die. Only fish very near the water's surface, say a few inches, might be killed.

I was lucky to be raised in a home where we were encouraged to go to church and believe in Jesus. Now I won't even claim that my faith has always been rock solid because it has not. But it has grown as I have gotten older. I believe that Jesus is the Christ and he died on the cross for my sins and on the third day he rose from the grave. I believe that one day he will come back and call all who are believers home. I think it is absolute paramount that you have some sort of belief. I have a hard time seeing how people don't believe in anything. I believe because it gives me hope that I have something better waiting for me and my family. This world is full of so many horrible things that there must be something better waiting for us when we die. With Jesus I have that blessed hope for an eternity with Jesus and my family and friends. I want my life to end and have my Lord and Savior tell me 'Well done, my good and faithful servant' because as a Christian that is the ultimate goal. It is not my job as a follower of Jesus to judge you for your choices. It is my job to love you. I heard something today that says the old saying is not right. We are to love the sinners and hate our sin because you need to ask ourself what does love require of me.
