A couple lost their 25 year old son in a fire on June 4th.

The son who had graduated with MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison two weeks earlier had come home for a while. He had lunch with his dad at home and decided to go back to clean up his hostel room. His father told him to wait, to meet his mother, before he went back for a few days.

He decided to take a nap while waiting for his mom to come back home from work. Some time later their neighbors called 911 when they saw black smoke coming out of the house.

Unfortunately, the 25 year old died in the three year old house.

It took several days of investigation to find out the cause of the fire. It was determined that the fire was caused by the laptop resting on the bed.

When the laptop was on the bed cooling fan did not get the air to cool the computer and that is what caused the fire.

He did not even wake up to get out of the bed because he died of breathing in carbon monoxide.

The Little House Out Back Everyone my age remembers the old, stinking outhouse, or as we all called it, the toilet, that was in the backyard of everyone’s houses.

I remember Daddy built us one in Emory Gap and it was a two-seater. One for the adults, and a small one for us little kids. It was in the backyard, at the corner of our property. I found out years later that these were strategically placed to be downwind from the house.

It was made of wood planks and had a wooden lock so no one could invade your privacy. The lock was small piece of wood, nailed to the door, just loose enough to be able to turn it.

Of course, there was always an old Sears & Roebuck catalog inside that you used to look at while doing your business, then when you’re job was finished, you used pages of it—well, you know what it was used for.

Kids didn’t go to the toilet at night. There was a pot with a lid in the bedroom to use until daylight. The pea pot had to be emptied before you went to school every morning. I don’t know what you all did with the contents of the pot, but we emptied it out in the backyard.

The rain kept it washed away and the smell down. Not very sanitary, but we survived.

I was always afraid to go to the toilet. I have an extreme fear of spiders, and that was a great place for them to reside, and the smell wasn’t too great, either.

Our kids, grandkids, and future generations to come will not experience a lot of the hardship we endured. Of course, we didn’t consider then hardships because we weren’t used to anything better.

They won’t know what it was like to play outside till dark, and even later if you could get up a neighborhood game of kick-the can, or hide and seek. They can’t imagine playing all day with a small rubber car in the shade of a tree in the front yard, while building a drive-in theater out of dirt, grading the roads with your hands, and making the speakers out of small twigs you stood up in the dirt.

Our future generations are missing out on a lot of the things we did or had, but the old toilet in the backyard is one of the things they are better off not having the opportunity to experience.

Nation's First State-wide Residential Recovery Court Set to Open in Morgan County By: Senator Ken Yager NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) and the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) are opening the first state-wide residential Recovery Court in the nation, effective August 1, 2013.

“I am pleased that the Morgan County Correctional Facility has been selected to house the nation’s first residential Recovery Court,” said Senator Ken Yager (R-Harriman), who is Chairman of the Senate State and Local Government Committee. “This needed facility is patterned after the highly successful Nashville Drug Court which boasts a 20% recidivism rate, which is more than half the current state rate.”

A special Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, July 30, at 541 Wayne Cotton Morgan Drive, Wartburg, Tennessee 37887. Among those scheduled to be in attendance are Governor Bill Haslam, State Senator Ken Yager of Harriman, State Representative John Mark Windle of Livingston, and many others.

“The Recovery Court provides judges an alternative sentencing prerogative for offenders that are addicted to drugs. It will allow judges to divert people who are in need of substance abuse treatment or mental health services to an effective treatment program at MCCF Recovery Court. This program will rehabilitate lives and at less cost than average incarceration. I thank Governor Haslam, Commissioners Schoefield and Varney for their commitment to this meaningful program and for selecting Morgan County Correctional Facility. We will make this program a showpiece for the nation.” said Senator Yager.

The 100-bed program will keep people from hard prison beds and send them to effective treatment programs that are evidence-based and proven to have a larger impact on reducing recidivism. It will also allow for prison beds to be reserved for those violent offenders who are in most need of them.

This Recovery Court is different from the other Drug Courts and Recovery Courts currently in operation in that this one is more intensive than the current program and offers services on a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week basis. It will be operated by the Davidson County Drug Court Support Foundation, a private foundation.

The Recovery Court will cost much less per person than an average prison: While prison costs an average of $65 per prisoner per day, the Recovery Court will cost an average of $35 per person per day.

“While incarceration is expensive, this isn’t just about saving dollars,” says TDMHSAS Commissioner Douglas Varney. “It is about doing what is best for public safety.”

Nationally, people who participate in evidence-based community programs that meet their needs recidivate at about one-third the rate of people who don’t. Alternative sentencing should be reserved for those offenders that are most in need. Drug offenders have been proven to have success in drug court programs that effectively address their needs.

“This program should not be considered being soft on crime,” says TDOC Commissioner Derrick Schofield. “What it says is that we’re going to place people in the best option to ensure they don’t re-offend. But also, we’re going to make sure we have a prison bed available for people who commit violent offenses that harm our communities.”

TDMHSAS and TDOC are working on this project in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, the Tennessee Department of Health, and the Davidson County Drug Court.

Something to Ponder

George Carlin George Carlin's wife died early in 2008 and George followed her, dying in July 2008. It is ironic George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent and so very appropriate. An observation by George Carlin: The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, 'I love you' to your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love. And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

And always remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by those moments that take our breath away.

Here it says, (Verse I) “The righteous perisheth and no man layeth it to heart, merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous are taken away from the evil to come.” (See Verse 2 for more.)

How wonderful God is that when we mourn over our loved ones that have gone on ahead, He will comfort us and lets us know we will see them again in Heaven!

A Letter to America

America is headed straight towards destruction. And this destruction will come as a judgment from God. This judgment can only be averted if we seek God and turn ourselves and our country around.

Responsibility for the ungodliness which now prevails in our great country belongs to each one of us. But why me, you are probably thinking, to yourself. Because God says so! You see, God is going to hold us responsible for everything. For what we have done and for what we failed to do.

In the Word of God (the Holy Bible) it says, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man" (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

We failed our duty in many different ways!

We stood by as our nation was being corrupted and perverted, and we let ungodliness seep into every aspect of our lives. Everything which God considers abomination is now acceptable in America.

Some of our political leaders now brazenly support things which God Almighty called wicked and abominable.

They are either not knowledgeable in God's word, or are defying God. The Holy Bible shows what happened to nations who dared to defy God, or that got so morally depraved that God finally destroyed them.

So we need to admit that America is morally and spiritually corrupt, and that it is time to turn back to God. As a start, turn the tor off, and then close your eyes, sit back, take a few deep breathes, and relax for a few minutes without thinking.

Then believe the Bible truth that there is a living God, our Creator, who created everything that was created and made, including you, and that He loves you.

On a clear night, go outside where it is dark and look at the moon, stars, and the never-ending universe. Everything you see before you, stands, on God's Word.

God wants us to love him, obey him, and serve him, in return for the life he has given us. To get to know God, read the Word of God, the Holy Bible, from beginning to end.

Household Hints  For picture frames with two holes, hang them evenly and easily by placing a single strip of masking tape over the back covering the two holes. Mark each end of the tape where the holes are located for hanging the frame. Take the tape off and place it on your wall. Make sure it is level then hammer a nail in at each pen mark.  If you have weeds growing in the cracks of your patio, deck or driveway, kill them by spraying with a solution of 1/4 cup salt added to 1 gallon of water.  If you drop a can of soda or it gets shaken up, to keep it from exploding when you pop the top, use your thumb and middle finger to thump up and down the side of the can as you rotate it for about 20 seconds. Then you can pop the top and enjoy.  Keep a bottle of Dawn original blue dish detergent on hand, it's a great degreaser as well as a spot remover.  To remove the smell of smoke place bowls of white vinegar around the house to absorb the odor.  Salt and lemon juice mixed together remove mildew stains.  When packing liquids (shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, etc...) for your next trip, take the lid off, place a piece of plastic wrap over the opening and screw the lid back on. The plastic wrap will keep the liquid from spilling even if the lid pops open.  Before grilling burger, press a hole in the middle of the patty. The hole will disappear as the burger cooks. This will minimize shrinking and you won't have to worry about them not being done in the center.  Do you have hard water spots around your sink fixtures? Soak a rag in white vinegar, lay the rag over your water spots let sit for a few minutes and the spots will scrub right off.  If your hair turns green from the chlorine in the pool, dissolve eight aspirin pills in a glass of warm water, coat hair with the solution, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse. The green will be gone.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes HATTIE SHILLINGS

Tuna Salad Wrap 1 can (6.5 oz.) white tuna, drained 1 small carrot, shredded 1/4 cup finely chopped celery 1/4 cup finely chopped green pepper

1/2 Tbsp. dried chives or chervil 2-4 Tbsp. nonfat mayonnaise Salt and black pepper, to taste 4 8-inch flour tortillas 4 Tbsp. nonfat cream cheese

4 well-dried leaves leafy lettuce slightly smaller than a tortilla 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 4 sprigs fresh mint, cilantro or flat-leaf parsley

1. In small bowl, combine tuna, carrot, celery, green pepper, chives and enough mayonnaise to make a moist (but not wet) salad. Add salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.

2. On each tortilla, spread a thin layer of cream cheese (about 1 tablespoon) across the center two-thirds of tortilla's surface, leaving a 2-inch margin along edges. Center 1 lettuce leaf on top of each tortilla.

Press leaf into cream cheese. Spread a quarter of the tuna salad firmly over each lettuce leaf, leaving a 2-inch margin at top and bottom of each tortilla. Sprinkle a quarter of cheese over each tortilla and top with a sprig of fresh mint or other fresh herb.

3. Fold the bottom of the tortilla up to cover the top of the filling. Fold in the two sides a quarter-inch.

Roll tortilla up, holding side folds in. Roll wraps tightly and as firmly as possible to ensure packets stays closed. Tightly seal each in plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve or pack. Wraps made without wet ingredients can keep for 24 hours or more without getting soggy. Makes 4 wraps.

Grilled Veggies 1 medium red onion 2 medium yellow squash 1 medium zucchini

2 medium bell peppers 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 4–5 fresh basil leaves 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons extra-virgin 1 teaspoon sugar (optional) olive oil

Preheat grill. Rinse all vegetables and basil.

Peel onion; cut onion, squash, and zucchini into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Cut peppers into quarters; remove and discard seeds. Chop basil leaves finely (2 tablespoons).

Combine all ingredients (except sugar) in medium bowl; toss until well coated. Place vegetables in single layer on grill; cook 3–4 minutes on each side or until desired tenderness. Remove from grill; sprinkle with sugar, if desired. Serve.

Almond Butter Cookies 1/2 cup Creamy Almond Butter 1/4 cup butter, softened 3/4 cup sugar

1 large egg 1 cup All Purpose Flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/8 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon almond extract 1/4 cup sliced almonds

HEAT oven to 375°. BEAT almond butter, butter and sugar in medium bowl with electric mixer on medium-high speed until creamy. Beat in egg. Add flour, baking soda, salt, vanilla and almond extract.

Beat until smooth. Form balls using 1 tablespoon dough. Place 2 inches apart on baking sheet. Press 4 or 5 almond slices on top of each cookie. BAKE 7 to 9 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool on pan 1 minute. Remove to wire rack to cool completely.

It's not the minutes spent at the table that put on weight, it's the seconds.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6598 Goldston-Whitson-Chapman Harriman and their Ladies Auxiliary join with Recal Nursery and Garden Center to light the way for Alzheimer’s. Post 6598 and their ladies Auxiliary routinely support their community by assisting veterans and their families, supporting the 278, and improving the Riverfront Park in Harriman. Recently they’ve joined forces with local nursery owner Nancy Rhoddy, of Recal Nursery and Garden Center, to light a path and transform a courtyard into a beautiful sanctuary for Alzheimer’s residents at Victorian Square Assisted Living to enjoy.

Post 6598 is no stranger to Victorian Square as they recently helped the community honor World War II Veteran Albert Winton as a Montford Pointe Marine along with all the Korean and War World II Veterans that live at Victorian Square Assisted Living.

Trustee Ron McCuiston presented the VFW with a proposed garden area design for the Alzheimer’s neighborhood at Victorian Square. This presentation was invited at the request of Post Commander Jim Irving. Commander Irving expressed his desire to help the community not only because of its veteran population but as an expressed desire of the VFW’s commitment to the community.

Post 6598 invited Mr. Winton to attend a post meeting where he was received with the honor, as all service men and women are. Mr. Winton accepted a check on behalf of his neighbor’s in the Alzheimer’s community from Post Commander Irving and Quartermaster Marion Wampler. The donation was given to install lighted lamp posts in a secure courtyard for left to right: Victorian Sq. Prerequisites for Success: Family, School and Church By: Pete Semanick

I lived at 900 Crescent Street with my Grandma Mattie and my mother Ruby. My mother worked at the hosiery mill, but for as long as I can remember my Granma Mattie was a cook. She worked at the Harriman CafÊ’ and Skinny Miller’s place. Both of them did their best to raise a young boy right: making sure I went to school and Church every Sunday.

In those days there was no Urgent Care to go to. We all went bare-footed in the summer, so what happened when a young lad stepped on a rusty nail? Grandma Mattie would clean the wound with hot soapy water and pour coal oil (kerosene) into a shallow dishpan and let the foot soak for a short time to stop the bleeding. She would then wrap the wound tightly with a scorched clean cloth until the wound healed.

As I mentioned earlier, our house was just across the L&N railroad tracks near the depot. Most freight trains coming through would slow down as they approached the Crescent Street RR tracks crossing. Back in those days RR crossing lights and guards were unheard of so the train engineer would sound the steam whistle to alert folks the train was coming through. The slowing down also alerted the numerous hobos (it was the Depression era) so they could jump off in Harriman. Some of them knew that our house was an easy target for food handouts. The hobos had made a mark on the corner of our house to identify it for other hobos. Grandma Mattie never refused food to a hobo. Unfortunately some hobos never made it though. Several deaths occurred when hobos fell off and rolled under the wheels of a train.

Grandma Mattie would have ladies over to the house for weekly prayer meetings and I remember them talking about the early 30’s when Roosevelt’s train passed through Harriman during one of his election tours. Roosevelt was on the rear platform of his coach tossing out aluminum pie plates in an attempt to get votes from those waiting on the train to pass through Harriman. Grandma always bragged about her having one of those plates.

Sunday was dress-up time and off to Sunday School at the local First Christian Church. In fact I was baptized at the church due to the loving concern of my Sunday School teacher Bill Hill, who was the editor of the Harriman Record newspaper.

There was a church just up Siluria Street near the hosiery mill. Some of us kids would sneak up to the church when services were being held. The lower windows were at ground level and we would lie on our stomachs and look in to see people having all sorts of funny activity such as throwing up their hands during the sermon and shouting loudly. Some would even fall to the floor. This was a strange church service as nothing like this every happened at the church I attended.

Harriman had an excellent school system. My first year of school was in the basement of the Trenton Street Baptist Church and my teacher was Mrs. West. In earlier years this lady had also taught my mother. I later attended a big stone three-story building.

I remember walking along the railroad tracks to go to school with very little memory of school itself. School just wasn’t my cup of tea but somehow I struggled through it all.

I do remember applying for the home economics class in my freshman year of high school. I believe this occurred because I was sweet on one of the girls in the class. Needless to say I was not on the class roll in this class at the beginning of the school year.

A highlight of my freshman year was a visit to my class from my favorite cousin, Edward (Bodie) Reid. This was during the war and cousin Bodie was on leave and wanted to surprise me. He was in his uniform looking very handsome and sharp with his stripes. Needless to say his visit was the talk of the class the rest of the day.

In January 1945 during a high school band musical concert assembly the Superintendent announced a fire drill and everyone was to leave in an orderly fashion. Like good students we left the building. My class was down front and we were the last to leave. I just happened to look back towards the stage and noticed wisps of smoke coming out of the vents over the stage. In minutes we heard the sounds of fire trucks and the volunteer firefighters responding. Sadly we watched the building go up in flames, the result of an electrical wiring problem.

There were quite a few arson fires: the Webbo, Princess, and the lumber yard, all set by the “B� boy. There was a lot of suspicion but no convictions. Our volunteer fire department men did a great job trying to put the fires out but to no avail, though their efforts did save adjoining buildings.

During the height of the Depression in the 1930’s almost 25% of America’s workforce was unemployed. Hundreds of thousands took the trains for free transportation to look for work. The word hobo comes from “hoe boys� because most carried a hoe. Famous former hobos include: novelist Louis L�Amour, Art Linkletter, oil billionaire H.L.Hunt, journalist Eric Sevareid and Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. Pete Semanick was born in Harriman on September 19th, 1930. This is the eighth entry of a series of articles recounting his youth in Harriman, TN. The folks at NASA have been long-time supporters (and users!) of duct tape, but it wasn't until 1970 when the Apollo 13 mission solidified the necessity of duct tape on every mission thereafter. When the flight crew got into a bit of a pickle (and we use the term "a bit of a pickle" loosely here, since their lives were essentially at stake), it was duct tape, in conjunction with a whole slew of other items, that saved their lives. In fact, Keith Canfield, one of the spacecraft's designers, said "I felt like we were home free" as soon as they found out there was duct tape onboard. "One thing a Southern boy will never say is, 'I don't think duct tape will fix it.'" Well now, thanks to him, he's got an entire country to back him up on that one.

Things you can do with old socks Old socks make wonderful pieces of fabric for you to create doll clothes with. With a little imagination and a few cuts of an old sock girls can create a variety of doll clothes.

Long socks can have the feet cut off and be used under pants as leg warmers. Simply pull the cut sock over the socks you are wearing and up to the knee. They will keep your legs doubly warm without the added bulk in your shoes.

Place cold cans of soda inside of socks when packing a picnic basket.

Place cedar chips inside an old sock and tie closed. Hang in your closet or place in drawers or hope chests.

Getting On and Off the School Bus (Advice for parents) 1.Parents should warn children that, if they drop something, they should never pick it up. Instead, they should tell the driver and follow the driver’s instructions. If they bend over to pick up a dropped object, they might not be seen by the driver and could be hurt if the driver pulls away from the stop.

2.Remind children to look to the right before they step off the bus.

Drivers in a hurry sometimes try to sneak by busses on the right.

3.Teach your children to secure loose drawstrings and other objects that may get caught in the handrail or door of the bus as they are exiting.

4.Give your child a note or follow your school´s procedures if you would like for the child to get off at a stop other than the one they are assigned. The driver isn´t allowed to let a child off at another stop without written permission.

5.If you meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side where the child will be dropped off, not across the street. Children can be so excited at seeing you after school that they dash across the street and forget the safety rules.

Seems so long ago but there is still evidence of this mentality today So often Separated by our differences that we fail to see the similarities in us all We are not as opposite as we appear White and black let's compare First thing Noticed are the eyes of humanity At times blinded by hatred that the cataract needs removed to see reality.

No matter what color your skin we all have black pupils that look out into a world that is killing itself in the name of vanity.

Some see what they are told others will dig deeper in an attempt to find truth Some dug to deep Reaching so far down In the pockets of their greed that they have become unrecognizable even to themselves.

That's all race's Hands We all have palms that are white No matter what shade of knuckles you have.

If you don't use those hands to do good it would be a wasted contrast If we continue to tear each other down we to will be a civilization that won't last.

Feet Black people have white feet Two feet and ten toes don't matter much without a soul We would rather walk alone then ask for help Try to make it on our own than ask for directions I am just attempting to unveil the connections We are not that different Considering we share the same organs Lungs that need breath to speak life instead of slander A liver to filter through all the crap that we need to surrender A heart that is black as sin Full of hurt, greed and pain If I make this personal I would add shame I understand where you grow up depends a lot on how you are raised The streets are not easy They will have your stressed out and all about that money.

It's easy not to worry about it when you have it So if you grew up with it you probably take it for granted Looking down at all the people who want it.

With a little recognition it could all be different.

Recognize we are all one race Survivors Prep yourself It's time for a transplant Take all of these comparisons and realize the race of a man is not affecting your destiny You are in control Let go of the hate that you have for people of another race that you don't even know Behind all the color is a person just like you Striving to make something of themselves And we all know that's a struggle to make it through.

This is one race in one world we all have to live in Stop worrying about there pigment Stop blaming others Grab hands Join together And make a difference.

Dear Friends: If you are a born-again child of God, please don't surround yourself with those that don't believe or not living in His will! For, satan can and will use them to pull you down to their level (even your friends can be the ones satan uses).

Now, I don't mean to forsake them for God can use your love and walk you have in Him to lead the others into convictions and repentance of their wrongs (sins).

So please be careful, for satan is real and he will try every work of deceit he has to hunt and even kill your walk with God. Oh by the way, our Lord God almighty is very, very real and He loves us all.

803rd Civil Eng. Squadron 12 Strategic Aerospace Div. Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ 8 May 1967 - 31 July 1968

by: PETE SEMANICK Aircraft in-flight emergencies were quite common and Chief Parker relied solely on his subordinates and I responded to most of these emergencies. I can’t remember one time when the chief responded, as he was quite comfortable monitoring the crash/fire radio in his office. He also had a nice, comfortable leather chair for relaxing during the noon hour break.

One F-4 takeoff emergency was quite F-4 Phantom embarrassing for the pilot and his passenger, a Major General. Somehow the pilot forgot to turn the fuel selector valve to the proper position and immediately after takeoff the plane’s engine failed. Needless to say the aircraft crashed a few hundred yards off the end of the runway. No one was injured and minor damage occurred but I can imagine what happened to the pilot after everything settled down.

Another F-4 incident occurred during a massive ramp refueling operation. A refueling nozzle became disconnected on an aircraft and the spraying fuel ignited. Fast response by our crash crews quickly extinguished the flaming fuel. Fortunately during this mass refueling operation we had a major crash truck and crew patrolling the area. Their alertness and quick thinking with a radio call for backup allowed other crash crews to respond. Very little damage occurred to the aircraft, but the maintenance and aircraft crew were certainly shaken.

Every time one of the U-2 aircraft took off or landed our crash crews were always on runway standby alert. This particular aircraft had center fuselage landing wheels with wing tip outriggers. This meant that the aircraft had to be chased down the runway by assigned maintenance “chase crews” so that immediately after the aircraft stopped, the crews could affix outrigger stanchions under each wing tip. Each wing tip stanchion had wheels attached at the base and this allowed the aircraft to continue taxiing to the hangar.

Each landing was always a touchy moment for responding crews.

Little did I know at this time I would not be stationed here for very long. One day in late November 1967 I received a phone call from military assignments at Randolph AFB in Texas. The clerk said he was advising me that an new overseas assignment would be shortly forthcoming. I joked and asked “which part of Europe will I be assigned” and he quickly answered, “not Europe but Southeast Asia”. I told him I just returned from there and he stated that with my rank and air force specialty code, new air force policy stipulated two consecutive short tours, which meant another remote assignment. I then advised the young man that I would be going to base personnel and putting in retirement papers because I would definitely not go back to Southeast Asia. I hung up the phone and headed for the personnel office and filled out my application for retirement for July 1968.

Needless to say I was very disappointed in the system but knew my family needed me more than Southeast Asia. This also meant turning down the rank of Chief Master Sergeant if I was selected in the meantime, but my family was more important than another stripe.

Oogy-Gooy 1.Many worms regenerate. To regenerate means to re-grow. If a worm loses part of its body because it’s cut off or caught on something, the worm can grow that part back and still stay alive.

2.Earthworms don’t have arms or legs. They don’t need them!

Earthworms burrow tunnels into the ground. In fact, this burrowing does something called “aerate” the soil. Aeration means putting air into the soil. This process is important to make sure that the soil uses all of the minerals it has available. That’s why earthworms help gardens grow.

3.Earthworms do not have lungs. They breathe by their skin taking in the air around them.

4.Worms have a pharynx, just like people and many other animals.

In people, the pharynx helps to separate food, air, and liquids, but in worms, the pharynx actually moves toward the mouth to “grab” food. The mouth is just an opening on worms. It doesn’t have teeth or a tongue.

5.To live, worms need to be in a moist area with enough food, water, and oxygen to survive. Worms also usually like dark places with mild temperatures. They will travel to new places to find the right conditions to live.

6.Worms eat a varied diet, based on where they live. Earthworms are omnivorous, meaning that they eat both plants and animals. They don’t catch animals, though. They only eat them once they’re already dead!

Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting.

Well, for example, the other day, my wife and I went into town and went into a shop. We were only in there for about 5 minutes. When we came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. We went up to him and I said, 'Come on man, how about giving a senior citizen a break?'

He ignored us and continued writing the ticket.. I called him an idiot. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tires. So Mary called him a moron.

He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes.

The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote. Just then our bus arrived and we got on it and went home.

We try to have a little fun each day now that we're retired. It's important at our age.

What is a Hero?

The men and women who have fought for the United States military are heroes. These men and women demonstrated bravery in the face of war. They have made many sacrifices to protect the freedom that Americans enjoy. Without these true American Warriors, our freedom would be compromised and a nation would be weakened.

In the song God Bless the USA, Greenwood, 1992, it states, "I am proud to be an American, where as least I know I’m Free, I won’t forget the men who died, and gave that right to me.” This song lyric clearly defines the sacrifices made, which enables the right of all Americans to be free. Both men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending this great country. According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, November 2011, over 1.3 million American men and women have died in combat.

These deaths occurred over the past 230 years in wars fought by Americans. Thousands more have been wounded, while many more soldiers have never been accounted for. These death tolls clearly demonstrate heroic acts of courage of the American soldier. The soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice have certainly not done so in vain. Their acts of bravery, and the blood they shed, will always be an expression of a people that stand for their ideas and cause.

If a poll was taken among all Americans asking their definition of a hero, I am certain the response would yield many different answers.

Responses to that poll might include, but may not be limited to; certain sports figures, specific political heads or maybe even a historical figure. Regardless of the response, I do believe many heroes walk among us today. Many people have, and continue to perform extraordinary feats every single day that could consider them as heroes; including that of police officers, firemen, teachers, etc. However, few people can claim more significant impact has been made on history than that of an American soldier. My prospective on soldiers, and all American veterans, has helped me gain a new appreciation for all of the men and women, both past and present, who have adorned the military uniform. These are true heroes.

Ronald Reagan, 40th president of the US “1911-2004” once stated: "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in and the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day, we will spend our sunset years telling our children, and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free".

History has taught all Americans that freedom is not free. For generations, fathers, mothers, sons and even daughters have given their lives to defend our freedom. What is a hero? The answer is simple. A hero is someone willing to sacrifice everything, including their own life to defend something of value and worth. This country has witnessed countless acts of heroism to defend her. My hope is that future generations will not forget all of the heroes and the many sacrifices made to defend this great place we call home. - Jeff Page for his Father, Melvin Page, one of Roane County’s honorable veterans

Buying Gas The Smart Way: TIPS ON PUMPING GAS I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are paying up to $3.75 to $4.10 per gallon. My line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon: Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold.

Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of

the nozzle to a fast mode If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

The School Bus Driver There are heroes today that never receive any recognition.

Some of these are a child's first acquaintance with education.

Now a teacher might be the first one who comes to our mind.

But I speak of the bus driver for which the kids wait in line.

For a moment, put yourself in the bus driver's shoes, And I'm sure you will find it's a job you might not want to choose.

Just think what it would be like to baby sit for sixty kids or better, And you must chauffeur this load of kids regardless of the weather.

I must admit, to be in front of a classroom with 20-30 kids wouldn't be a picnic, But to drive 60 kids over icy roads would set my nerves on edge and make my stomach sick.

A school bus driver is like a postman and must go regardless of rain, snow, gloom and darkest of night.

But no postman ever had to have 60 kids, clean up their mess, or break up a fight.

A child can have a bad day at school without any warning, But can be forgotten when a bus driver says, "Have a good evening, I'll see you in the morning" Ask any student, what heroes of theirs never received any fame, And I'll bet a bus driver will be among those that they name.

Rockwood Memories Dr. John Neal By: Ray Collet As a youngster growing up in the Clymersville area, every Saturday morning it seemed as if everyone went "to town." Lots of times, after spending half of the day in the movies, I would run into my dad somewhere downtown. He would usually take me to Brown's Cafe for a couple of their famous "Bert Brown Hamburgers" and a couple of Grapette sodas. Although sometimes he would get a "Red Top Ale." I remember, on one occasion seeing a rather shabbily dressed man sitting on a stool at the counter and dumping a salad into his coat pocket. When I said something to my Dad, he said, " Son, that is Mr. John R. Neal," and he proceeded to tell me some history about him. Later on I did some research on Mr. Neal and I would like to share it with you. He was certainly one of the best known and most fascinating people in Tennessee at one time.

Mr. Neal joined the faculty at the UT College of Law in 1917 and had already gained an incredible amount of political recognition and many scholastic degrees. He had earned an undergraduate degree from UT, an M. A. and a law degree from Vanderbilt University, and a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University. Immediately upon receiving his doctorate in 1899, he taught law at the University of Denver, leaving in 1907 to return to Tennessee where he won a seat in the Tennessee General Assembly. Two years later, he won election to the Tennessee Senate. While serving in the Senate, Dr. Neal helped secure passage of the General Education Bill of 1909 , which increased appropriations throughout the state and established the precedent of regular allocations of funds for the University of Tennessee.

These accomplishments though, hid a rather unconventional personality. He was very popular with his law students, but rarely paid attention to the University's administrative requirements which didn't fare too well with his superiors. He did not turn in grades promptly, he even failed to grade his examinations.

He announced to one class that he would give them all 90s as grades if they didn't want to take an exam.

Objectors could elect to take an exam though. He often failed to meet his classes, and when he did, the assigned lesson was usually discarded in favor of a discussion of current events. This certainly caused bad feelings between Dr. Neal and the law school dean, Malcolm McDermott.

In 1923, six faculty members were dismissed upon the recommendation of James Hoskins, dean of the University. The reasons were varied, but one charge was that some of those released were too liberal in their views on evolution. When the law school dean heard of this, he recommended that Dr. Neal's name be added to the list, and in July 1923, the dismissals were formally announced. This "Slaughter of the Ph.D.'s " as some called it, caused a public outcry and an investigation by the American Association of University Professors, (AAUP). Dr. Neal questioned the charges against him, of missing classes, refusing to grade exams, and neglecting the subject of his lectures, and received some AAUP support in his stand, but it was not enough to change the Trustees decision.

Dr. Neal, disappointed, took on a variety of other things. The most spectacular was the establishment of a private law school in Knoxville for part-time students. It lasted for twenty years and enrolled more than seventy students during its peak period, 1940-1941, but it never attained much stature as an institute of legal education.

Dr. Neal ran for several public offices in Tennessee, but failed on each effort. In 1925, he undertook the defense of John Scopes in the famous Dayton, "monkey Trial", enlisting Clarence Darrow as his co-counsel. He achieved some notoriety in this case but failed to prevent Mr. Scopes conviction.

In other "liberal" causes, Dr. Neal wrote the charter for the Highlander Folk School, supported the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority, and represented North Carolina mill workers in suits arising from a strike.

In his last years, Dr. Neal, a bachelor, became a little more eccentric in his behavior. On one occasion, he commented on the beautiful scenery in fields where there were none. And in 1959, just shortly before his death, and years after his law school had closed, he announced to some old friends its opening!

Friends, however, preferred to remember Dr. John R. Neal as a champion of lost causes, a defender of labor unions, an advocate of civil liberties, and a supporter of the University of Tennessee.

I hope this brings back some memories of a truly great man in his heyday.

The Blonde and the Rabbit A man was speeding down a back country road, when he saw a rabbit hopping in the middle of the road. Although he tried to swerve and miss it, he hit the rabbit squarely. Being a true animal lover, the man slammed on his brakes, leapt from his car, and hurried to see if the rabbit was alright. To his dismay he found the rabbit was dead.

As the man sorrowing over the rabbit's limp body, he heard another car coming. The other car stopped and the driver emerged to see what was going on. The other driver, a blonde, nudged the rabbit's limp body with her toe and remarked that it surely was dead.

The man once again expressed his grief over having killed the poor innocent animal but the blonde said not to worry. She ran to her car, dug around inside, and returned with a spray can.

She sprayed the rabbit's body and, sure enough, after a few minutes, the rabbit stirred, quivered, and then rose to a crouching position. A moment later the rabbit started down the road as if nothing had ever happened.

However, every few feet the rabbit would turn and wave goodbye.

The man was astounded! He snatched the spray can from the blonde to see just what kind of magic she had done! The spray can bore the label: ALBERTO VO5 Restores life to any dead limp hair and gives it a permanent wave.

Students, How to Torture Your Teacher

Start each day with a surprise quiz. Don't dismiss the class for recess until you've finished the lesson you're working on.

At the end of the day, hand out a huge assignment that's due the next day.

When a student says, "I have to go to the bathroom," say, "You should have gone this morning before you left home" or "You'll have to hold it in; it's time for the kindergarten to use the bathrooms."

Never call on students who have their hands up.

Only call on students who have no idea what's going on.

When a student asks you a question, say, "Look up the answer in a book." Don't bother to mention the name of the book in which the answer can be found.

When you read, go as fast as you can.

Skip a line or two, then ask questions about the passage to see if the students were listening.

When it's time for the students to read, call on someone who doesn't have a book.

When you hand out pencils, make sure they're dull and don't have erasers.

When you hand out books, make sure they're torn and tattered.

When preparing the students for a test, write all the information they'll need to know on the board. Then stand in front of the board so they can't see what you've written.

As soon as you've finished discussing the test information, turn quickly and erase the board.

On the last day of school, hand out a surprise final exam.

Tell your students if they flunk it, they'll have to attend summer school-and if they flunk summer school, they'll have to repeat the grade.

Tell them you hope they all flunk because you like them so much and you wish they could be your students again next year.

Only raise your hand when you want to sharpen your pencil or go to the bathroom.

Repeat every ten minutes.

Never raise your hand when you want to answer a question; instead, yell, "Oooh!

Oooh! Oooh!" and then, when the teacher calls on you, say, "I forgot what I was going to say."

Lean your chair back, take off your shoes, and put your feet up on your desk. Act surprised when the teacher puts all four legs of your chair back on the floor.

Drop the eraser end of your pencil on your desk. See how high it will bounce.

Drop your books on the floor. See how loud a noise you can make. Hum. Get all your friends to join in.

Hold your nose, make a face, and say, "P.U.!" Fan the air away from your face, and point to the kid in front of you.

On the last day of school, lead your classmates in chanting: "No more pencils! No more books!

No more teachers' dirty looks!"

Then, on your way out the door, tell the teacher, "Bet you're looking forward to summer vacation this year. But I'll sure miss you. You're the best teacher I've ever had."

Mother, Interrupted: The 30-30 Deal

Thirty minutes. It’s a relatively short amount of time, right? But I’m convinced these little half-hour segments are the key to a happy life and marriage. A while back, my husband and I realized that there were lots of things we both wanted to do, but felt like we didn’t have time for. As a mom, I sometimes feel like I’m missing out on some things others might take for granted, like a long, hot shower, or uninterrupted sleep. Parents can always find time for their children, but sometimes we neglect to find time for ourselves. We came up with a simple, but life-changing solution. We call it the 30-30.

Here’s the deal: every day, we each take a thirty-minute break from our lives as parents. We are “allowed” to use that precious half-hour doing anything we want; exercising, napping, showering, meditating, swimming, pinning recipes, staring into space, and anything else we’d feel compelled to do. Well, anything that takes 30 minutes or less. It’s a great setup. It keeps us from going crazy or forgetting we exist outside of our parental identities. There’s no set schedule; sometimes I take my thirty minutes at 8:00am, and other times, right before bed.

Taking our breaks separately is a necessity, but I like it. Michael can participate in his manly hobbies without me tagging along, and I can do pilates without him checking me out the whole time. Not that I mind all that much. I’ve only been married for three years, but I know how important it is for both of us to have our own hobbies (as well as hobbies we enjoy together). Since our hobbies are so different—his include biking, music production, and drawing, while mine include singing Disney songs (don’t judge me), hula hooping, and trying new recipes—it only makes sense to take some alone time to enjoy them. Plus, when you’ve got weird hobbies (finger knitting, anyone?), the absence of others that might be married to you is a real bonus.

I always feel rejuvenated after spending my 30 minutes doing something solely for me. I’m totally aware of how selfish that makes me sound, but I love my “me-time” enough to ignore it. Completely.

I feel especially great when I use my half-hour to exercise, but let’s be honest. A thirty minute hot shower sounds a little more appealing than a thirty minute hot run. Am I right? Ask my hamstrings.

I’m surprised when other parents tell us our plan is revolutionary.

Like they’ve never even considered that they could take advantage of the built-in-babysitter (your spouse) they have living with them.

It may have taken us a few years for us to figure it out, but there’s no turning back now. In fact, we’ll probably continue to up the ante by adding time to our parenthood breaks. Thirty minutes becomes an hour, an hour turns into 3, and eventually, we’ll be taking individual week-long vacations to Cabo before we come home. I mean, that sounds doable, right?

Rumors travel fast in Roane County. A rumor can start in Emory Gap, and within minutes it will spread to Kingston, Midway, Rockwood and Oliver Springs.

But you have to take rumors with a grain of salt. So when I heard that Glander was retiring, I decided to go down to the station and market and get the truth from the horse's mouth.

I walked down the Gap to Glander's Full Service Station and Market. I saw Glander sprawled on the old car seat between the station and market. He was dressed in sandals, Bermuda shorts, an Hawaiian shirt, sunglasses and had an orange head band on. He was reading a copy of The Roane Reader. Glander's two sons, Solomon and Merlin, were bopping their buns off, pumping gas, cleaning windshields and checking oil.

"Hey, Sour," Glander greeted me. "Take a load off."

I sat beside him and asked him what was this I had heard about him retiring.

"Yap, it's the truth," Glander said. "I'm sixty-five now, been operatin' 'is place for forty years. I figure it's about time I retire and enjoy muh golden years."

"Is this place going to close?" I asked.

"Oh, no," Glander replied. "It'll stay open. Solomon and Merlin will keep it goin'. Glander's Full Service Station and Market will go on as before. It's in good hands with Solomon. Now Merlin, he's a different story. Merlin's like a robot. He'll do what he's told--usually, but you have to keep a tight rein on him. But I know Solomon will do that."

"But this place just won't be the same without you," I said.

"Oh, it's not that I'm just gonna disappear into the twilight zone," Glander replied. "I'll be coming down here ever' once and awhile to check on things and see that the business is being run the right way."

"What will you do though," I asked, "to fill up your time."

"Oh, I got lots of things to do," Glander replied. "I been hired by Roane State to conduct a couple of, whatyemaycallit, seminars in marketin' and operatin' a business. Also I got season tickets to all the U. of T. athletic events. Plus, I been thinkin' about writin' a book. I'll title it Forty Years of Full Service With a Grin. I like that title--it's ear-and-eye-catchin'. Yap, I got plenty of things to do that'll occupy my time."

Merlin came bopping over from the gas pumps headed for the station.

"Hey, Mr. Sour," he snorted and chortled.

"Where you goin'?" Glander asked.

"Gonna get me a cold pop," Merlin replied, clicking his tongue and sniggering.

"Get me and Sour here one while you're at it," Glander said, "and get Solomon one too."

"Okay, but I need some change. You got any?"

"What do you need change for?" Glander asked.

"To put in the Coke machine," Merlin replied.

"Get the pops out of the fridge, you don't need any change," Glander said.

"Oh--yeah--I didn't think of 'at," Merlin clicked his tongue and snickered again, and then entered the station.

Glander wagged his head. "There's somethin' bad wrong with 'at boy, but dang if I know what it is. I know one thing--he didn't get it from my side of the family."

He shifted the quid in his mouth and then spat at a gas can thirty feet away. He hit it squarely.

More uses for hydrogen peroxide * Add natural highlights to your hair. Dilute the hydrogen peroxide so the solution is 50% peroxide and 50% water. Spray the solution on wet hair to create subtle, natural highlights. * Adding half a bottle of hydrogen peroxide to a warm bath can help detoxify the body.

Some are skeptical of this claim, but a bath is always a nice way to relax and the addition of hydrogen peroxide will leave you – and the tub – squeaky clean! * Spray a solution of 1/2 cup water and 1 tbls hydrogen peroxide on leftover salad, drain, cover and refrigerate. This will prevent wilting and better preserve your salad. * Sanitize your kids’ lunch boxes/bags. * Dab hydrogen peroxide on pimples or acne to help clear skin. * Hydrogen peroxide helps to sprout seeds for new plantings. Use a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution once a day and spritz the seed every time you re-moisten. You can also use a mixture of 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 32 parts water to improve your plants’ root system. * Remove yellowing from lace curtains or tablecloths. Fill a sink with cold water and a 2 cups of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Soak for at least an hour, rinse in cold water and air dry. * Use it to remove ear wax. Use a solution of 3% with olive or almond oil. Add a couple drops of oil first then H2O2. After a few minutes, tilt head to remove solution and wax. * Helps with foot fungus. Spray a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry. Or try soaking your feet in a peroxide solution to help soften calluses and corns, and disinfect minor cuts. * Use 1 pint 3% hydrogen peroxide to a gallon of water to clean humidifiers and steamers. * Wash shower curtains with hydrogen peroxide to remove mildew and soap scum.

Place curtains in machine with a bath towel and your regular detergent. Add 1 cup full strength 3% hydrogen peroxide to the rinse cycle. * Use for towels that have become musty smelling. 1/2 cup Peroxide and 1/2 cup vinegar let stand for 15 minutes wash as normal. Gets rid of the smell. * Use hydrogen peroxide to control fungi present in aquariums. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt your fish. Use sparingly for this purpose.

The Reasons Why Your 401(k) or IRA is an Inadequate Investment Some of the major disadvantages of tax-deferred plans often not thought of: • High Fees - Most retirement plan fees are hidden beneath layers and layers of costs

assumed by mutual funds. There are the widely publicized expenses reflected in the prospectus of the mutual fund listed under the expense ratio. But there are also broker fees, trading costs, commissions, and other fees that you can find only in what is called the Statement of Additional Information (SAI). These additional expenses are difficult to determine, but a 2007 analysis by Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, and Boston College revealed that the average SAI charge is 1.44 percent per year. This is in addition to the 1.56 percent charged by the average Annual Expense Ratio.

In other words, the total charge of the average mutual fund or variable annuity is 3.00 percent per year.

Over a ten year period this can be one of the biggest downsides of the 401k. There are so many people who need to get paid in order for the whole process to work. Because of the administrators, fund managers, brokers, etc. all needing to charge fees for their work, it can really cut into your earnings. Many of the fees you pay on your 401k kind of work in a hidden type of way. You as an investor, don’t get billed for your fees, they are conveniently taken out without you knowing about it. If you do some research you can find out more about what you are paying, but it is all pretty ambiguous to the average 401k account holder. Unfortunately, most investors don’t realize the impact that a 3% fee has on their investments over the course of 30 years. If many people saw it in dollar figures, rather than percentages, they would be more concerned about the huge amount of dollars taken from their accounts. If your account wound up even in a ten year period, as many have, you could have paid out about 3% each year or an average of about $30,000 in fees and expenses… The advisor and fund management made out well on your money!

• Taxation - Make no mistake about it. The government knows how to generate future tax revenue at your expense. They do this by allowing you to take tax breaks today in exchange for much larger tax bills in the future. In other words they don’t tax the seed… they tax the whole harvest! Many people just look at the tax benefits of tax deferral and neglect to factor in that what used to be a $5,000 tax write-off is now a tax bill for tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Uncle Sam has figured out how to entice you into funding his future spending.

• Lack of Liquidity and Accessibility - If you need access to your funds prior to age 59 1/2, your retirement plan generally will have a 10% penalty and you may also owe federal and state taxes. Often a withdrawal from a retirement account can cost you 40% or more. That means for every $100,000 you would lose 40% or $40,000 in taxes and penalties…that’s not what you call easily accessible. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but in most cases, your retirement plan is very inflexible and costly if you need to access the funds.

What can we do about it? We could take advantage of a tax free retirement plan by utilizing a little known rule in the Internal Revenue Code…. A modern, little known opportunity is one that offers Tax free growth and tax free withdrawals during retirement. Plus some very important living benefits as well as death benefits.

For example… coverage for premature death, serious illnesses like cancer, heart disease and stroke. 7 out of 10 people have a heart attack, stroke or cancer by the time they are 43 years old. By the time they are 44 most of them are bankrupt. A goodly amount of investors have no such coverage in their 401k.
