Precious Memories

SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY By O.I. Seenya

By: Kay Christopher

 Maintenance crews removing old flowers from graves in a public cemetery a week before Memorial Day to “clean up” the cemetery. Problem is, they also removed expensive, fresh ones just placed on the graves, and also American flags, that had been placed on the graves, were found thrown on the ground.  If you’re on the staff at an emergency room, please don’t get up and walk away from the service window when you see someone so weak they can’t walk being assisted up to the window. And please don’t just stand there and talk while they collapse in the floor, forcing another patient to run to help her before you acknowledge she needs attention, especially if all you‘re doing is having a casual conversation with a co-worker.  A wave of different people doing the right thing and standing up for God. He stands up for us all the time its good to see others glorifying him for a change.  Man spotted doing Wallis and doughnuts in the middle of Carlock Ave in a dark colored "HoverRound".  Lady Shopping at a local grocery store in Midtown left her wallet in her buggy. She gets home and realizes her wallet is gone and calls the store and asks if any one turned it in. The operator say yes our buggy retrieval clerk "Betty" turned it in. The lady was so thankful she gave her a thank you card and a tip for the wonderful thing she had done. This act touched both of there hearts and we only pray to have more people like them.

Happy Birthday

Matt Christopher Aug. 24th

Eagle Mart

Lee Smith I was so saddened to hear of the death of an old friend, Lee Smith, this past month. We lived beside Lee and his family for many years before we all grew up and went our separate ways. Lee was a good kid, well most of the time. I can still recall how when he got in trouble, his Mom, Louise would swing open the front door and yell, “Alfred Lee, come here!” And I remember some other things he did that he got away with. Like the times his Dad E.L. would ground him and his two younger brothers Ronnie and Terry by making them stay in the yard near the house. They weren’t allowed to go to the bottom of the yard, where the shade and great climbing trees were near the road for a week. Well, several times I watched as they sneaked down their yard anyways and climbed trees, playing for hours while waiting for their Dad to come driving up the road. There was a hedge between their property line and their neighbor’s just high enough for them to crouch down and run up to the house when E.L. came up the road from work, so they could be sitting innocently on the porch when E.L. pulled up the driveway. Their Dad never knew. A few years later, I sat beside Lee at the softball fields in Harriman as he watched and made cat calls at his future wife Ketta while she was warming up for a game. He loved her so much. Lee was a good kid, a fine man, and a good friend to everyone that knew him.

Happy 100th Birthday!

Top 5 Superheroes of all time (According to Parade Magazine poll)

5. The Thing The Thing is the hard hitting, rock covered member of the Fantastic Four. His personality is based on entertainer and vaudeville star Jimmy Durante. His team can always rely on him to put a pounding on the enemy, but his permanent, monstrous, ugly shape weighs heavily on him emotionally. The Thing was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee in 1961. 4. Spiderman The amazing Spiderman can climb sheer surfaces, he is super strong and agile, and he can shoot webs out of devices on his wrists. What makes Spiderman unique is that underneath it all, he is a nerdy high school student with everyday problems. His life is a superhero soap opera. He was originally conceived of by writereditor Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko in 1962. 3. Power Rangers They've become everything from time travelers to high tech samurai. The Power Rangers use their laser guns and close combat weapons to defeat evil monsters, but save their giant robot Zords for when their nemeses grow to enormous sizes (a power that they all apparently possess). Originally, Power Rangers was actually an adaptation of a Japanese series called Super Sentai. Power Rangers spliced footage of English speaking actors with the Japanese combat scenes dubbed into English. 2. Superman It's a bird! It's a plane! The Man of Steel is widely considered to be an American cultural icon. Superman has almost every power one could conceive of. His real costume is Clark Kent. Other superheroes put on a superhero disguise to become crime fighters. The Man of Steel puts on a reporter disguise to become a normal person. He is more powerful than a locomotive, faster than a speeding bullet, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Superman was created in 1932. 1. Batman The Caped Crusader. The Dark Knight. Batman. Gotham City's only hope leaps across rooftops and slips through alleys while patrolling the streets at night, cloaked in shadows. What sets Batman apart from other superheroes is his lack of supernatural powers. The only thing he has to rely on is his steadfast determination (and his immense wealth, of course). Batman was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger in 1939, although his modern dark, gritty persona came to life at the hand of Frank Miller in 1986's The Dark Knight Returns.

5 The Roane Reader

By: Ray Collet

I thought I would send out a "hog-killing" story to drive some of this hot weather away. Sure am glad spring is here and our cold winter is all over for another year. We had a couple of "hogkilling" days that's for sure. Speaking of hog killing, when I grew up in Clymersville the neighbors would all help each other out with that chore. My two cousins, Johnny and Jay Warner would always help and knew their duties well. Jay would shoot the hog and Johnny would stick it. Now one December morning it was time. I walked over to the hog lot and stood there leaning against the woven wire fence looking down on the sleeping and belly-grunting Poland China boar lying there stretched out in the icy cold mud of the hog lot. He laid there in the mud with his wet snout wrinkling as he snorted, quivered and dreamed of whatever it is boar hogs dream about, probably 500 pound sows. I could see his two razor sharp ivory tusks growing out of his lower jaw and curving clean up around his long snout. He sure wasn't what you'd consider making into a pet hog, and I was glad we were butchering him. Jay came from out of the house with his little single shot, bolt action Stevens .22 rifle, closed the bolt on a shell and leaning it against the hog lot fence asked Johnny if he was ready with the butcher knife. "Yep", he said and the water is just right for scalding". I turned around just in time to see Johnny's little brother pick up the rifle and fire a round and the little rifle cracked keen in the cold mountain air. Jay grabbed the rifle and Johnny awoke from a short nap, (probably had a drink or two), but seeing Jay holding the rifle, figured he had just shot the hog. Now when a hog goes down, usually the first thing a person cuts is the hog's "prized possessions", also known as "mountain oysters", a delicacy for some people. Before I could say anything, Johnny crawled across the fence, and with all of us looking on, he got down on his knees beside the big boar hog muttering under his breath, knife in hand, made a quick slash and flung them over the fence. I thought the world was coming to an end, never saw such a commotion in all of my life. The hog came out of that mud like a five hundred pound blast of dynamite, slinging mud and blood in ever direction. The hog went about five feet straight up, legs churning and his tusks clacking, trying to get to Johnny. He finally got his churning feet to working and slinging his churn-size head side-to-side hit Johnny like a runaway freight train. Johnny turned a complete somersault in midair and when he came back down, landed astraddle that old boar's high arched back facing backwards. Johnny rode the boar for a few seconds but was no match for it. Finally when Johnny lost the fight, he lay there, lost both of his tennis shoes, and his toes were curled up like a dead crows in the cold morning air. His hair was matted and his face was covered with mud, blood, and everything from the hog pen. Jay shot the hog a couple of times and the butchering was completed. After that experience, I told Bill Wilkey, "There's no telling how much money we could make if we could take Johnny and Jay around to butcher hogs, probably charge folks twenty-five cents a head to watch." To my knowledge, I don't think Jay and Johnny butchered any more hogs. Ray's books "Rockwood Memories" can be by calling Ray at (865) 354-7680...

Sisters Battle Cancer

August 2012

By Wes Hall Posted by The Knoxville Journal on July 20th, 2012 Two sisters grew up in Morgan County, sharing almost everything, but they had no idea they shared a gene that would show up in their 40′s and change their lives drastically. Tonya Melhorn Cooley is now 46 and the single mother of two, still living in Morgan County. Tonya was diagnosed in May 2010, with stage III ovarian cancer and endured five months of chemotherapy with one year of preventive treatment. In January 2012, as a precautionary measure, she had a complete mastectomy and upon having the tissue examined doctors discovered she had breast cancer. She began another cycle of chemotherapy in March and has endured six surgeries since January. She has two more left. Melinda Melhorn Willis is now 43-years-old. She is married with four children. They live in Lenoir City. In August 2011, she was diagnosed with Stage II Breast Cancer. She had a complete mastectomy and endured chemotherapy through March 2012. As a precautionary measure and fear the cancer may spread, she had a complete hysterectomy and has endured four surgeries. She plans another soon. Unfortunately, cancer has effected this family for many years and with several family members dying from this disease, or currently fighting it. Their brother, Michael Melhorn, says he has been checked for the cancer gene and tested positive for it but currently doesn’t have cancer. “I think it’s imperative for families to get checked for the cancer gene especially if they have as many family members as I have that’s past away from this disease, or that is currently battling it.” Both are being treated by the same doctor, nationally-recognized physician Larry Kilgore, MD, at U.T. Hospital who has done extensive cancer research. Melinda Melhorn Willis (left) and Tonya Melhorn Cooley are sisters fighting cancer. Dr. Kilgore has brought his expertise in diagnosing and treating women with cancer of the reproductive organs to the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine as Professor and Chief of Obstetric and Gynecology’s Division of Gynecologic Oncology. A surgical team led by Dr. Kilgore, recently successfully removed a 120-pound non-cancerous ovarian tumor from a patient. The patient, a 61-year-old Maryville woman, is home recovering. She requested to have her medical story told so other women would not wait, as she did, before seeing a physician. Michael Melhorn is raising money for his sisters because as his wife says on Facebook, “These ladies need all the help they can get.” They are currently selling tickets for a Rifle Raffle to help raise money for his sisters that are battling cancer. Donations can be made to The Melhorn Sisters Cancer Fund at the Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union. Michael Melhorn says, “Thanks for any help you can give.” For more information you can find Michael Melhorn on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/michael.melhorn

Dear Readers: I want to say a big thank you to all the people who called, Facebooked, visited, brought food by, and especially said a prayer for Angie when she was so sick. For those of you who don’t know, Angie is our niece and she has Down’s Syndrome. She has lived with me and my husband for over 9 years now. She has lost her Mom and Dad and a sister and brother over the years. She recently went through a series of blacking out, not eating, but maybe 3 cups of food in over month, and drinking about a cup of water a day. She was too weak to even sit up. My husband handfed her for days to keep her alive. After two trips to emergency rooms and a Dr. visit, Methodist Medical Center worked wonders on her. We were in the ER for seven hours, but they worked with her the whole time, giving her 4 pints of blood and 2 IVs. She was hospitalized and diagnosed with extreme low blood pressure and being severely anemic. The care they gave her saved her life. I didn’t think she’d live through the sickness, but your prayers helped God decide to let her stay with us for awhile longer.

Thank you. Kay & Larry Christopher

What Does the Bible Say About.. Hardening Pharaoh's Heart?

In the book of Exodus, you‘ll notice that God deliberately hardened Pharoah's heart. Why would he deliberately hardened his heart in order to get the Israelites freed from slavery? If that is what he wanted anyway? Answer Exodus 4:21 does indicate that God would intentionally harden Pharaoh’s heart so he would not let the people go. That was so that God could show Answers to the world his power, as exhibited in the plagues. I believe that God needed Who Did It? to show his own people his power as much as he needed to show it to Abraham: Genesis 11:29 others. Only in this way would his people choose to follow his laws. Joseph: Genesis 37:9 Abraham: Genesis 17:1-11 Furthermore, the Passover (the last of the plagues) served as a picture of Joshua: Deuteronomy 31:23 the redemption that would later come through the Messiah. Abimelech: Exodus 8:15 indicates Pharaoh hardened his own heart. So how much of Genesis 20:2;26:6,7 the hardening came from God? Maybe very little. Since Pharaoh hardened Esau: Genesis 25:29-34 his own heart, maybe God just needed to harden it a little more so that he Laban: Genesis 29:21-26 would not let the people go before the last plague. Perhaps if God had not Rachel: Genesis 31:19 hardened his heart he might have let them go after only eight or nine Shechem: Genesis 34:1,2 Amnon: 2 Samuel 13:1-22 plagues. But God wanted to make sure that the plague of the death of the firstborn would occur. So he took Pharaoh’s already hard heart and hardened it a little more. It’s not like Pharaoh had a soft heart to begin with and God made it hard, taking away his choice. It is more like God hardened an already obstinate heart.

The Minister's Tree House Crossville, TN

If you haven’t visited this place—you’re in for a treat, and if you have—you’re in for another treat. In the early 1990s, landscaper Horace Burgess bought some wooded land on the outskirts of Crossville, Tennessee. One of the bigger trees, next to a dirt road, caught his eye. With God’s help, he decided to build the world's largest tree house in its branches. The directions are simple from I-40. Take exit 320. Turn north onto Hwy 298, then make an immediate right at the stoplight onto Cook Rd. Drive almost a mile. As the road takes a sharp right, instead make a sharp left onto Beehive Lane. Drive about a half-mile. The pavement will end, and you’ll think you’re in someone’s one lane gravel driveway, but just keep driving. You'll see the tree house ahead and to the right. Remember that when you visit, you will be trespassing, and that the tree house is not a funhouse. There are no safety precautions. You visit at your own risk. It’s a beautiful place for a picnic. There are tables and plenty of shade and parking, and it’s open till dark everyday—free of charge, although donations are accepted.

Household Hints

 To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.  Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip or slacks to eliminate static cling. It works; you will not have a clingy skirt or dress, or slacks when wearing panty hose; ... Ta DA! ... Static is gone.  Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.  Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!  Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. The ones with 4 bumps are firmer and stronger flavored.  Drop a small object on the carpet and can't find it. Place panty hose over the end of the vacuum hose and start vacuuming. The panty hose will keep it from getting sucked into the vacuum.  Need to cut some corn off the cob. Use your bundt pan. Place the ear on the opening in the center of the pan, and as you slide the knife down the ear, all the kernels will collect in the main part of the pan.  Re-opening envelopes: If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Voila! It unseals easily. Only for old- fashioned "lick-type" mucilage envelopes!  Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth.  Mosquito Spray... Spray the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared. Fill a spray bottle and use it around your seat whenever you see mosquitoes. Also, spray around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing water nearby.

CUCUMBERS

 Feeling tired in the afternoon? Put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.  Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.  Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.  Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!  Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.  Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

Happy 1st Anniversary To my beautiful wife Stephanie whom I thank God for everyday!! I'm not sure what our family would do without the love and kindness that you treat us with. I only hope to have half of the love you display to people. I love you with all my heart and hope to grow old together. -Justin Stout

"Life Lessons Learned" By: Rita Webster

1. LOL: "I'll see you tomorrow." LOL "It is so hot today." LOL "I've really had a bad day." LOL . Now there is nothing funny about these sentences so why do some people feel the need to add LOL (laughing out loud) at the end of them and nearly everyone else they write? Ridiculous! I have been on the internet for over 15 years and have never read anything so hilarious that one would need to add that phrase, yet so many people do. 2. No Smoking: I paid dearly for a motel room on the second floor of a fancy motel. There was nothing said upon me checking in about smoking. There was a sign on a post near my room that said "This is a no smoking area." (I had my own private balcony by the way, and it wouldn't have hurt anyone around if I smoked or not.) The sign also stated, "The smoking area is on the ground floor near room 102." Do you actually think I walked that far of a distance every time I lit one up? NO, I did not. Stupid Commies taking over I tell ya! 3. Ice Cream: Why doesn't ice cream taste as good as it did when I was a kid? Is it just me or are they putting in and taking out so many artificial ingredients (for my health) that any flavor I buy is so bland. Stop it! 4. Fingernail Polish: Black fingernail polish really gets on my nerves. I don't know why...it just does. 5. Construction Zones: Can someone, anyone, explain to me why everytime I pass a highway construction project (usually state roads) there are always 4 or 5 men standing around doing nothing? I mean really just standing around doing nothing. Oh, and at least 3 of them will be holding a coffee cup. Why?

1. Don't Lie. 2. Don't Cheat. 3. Don't Steal. 4. Never fail to say good-bye and I love you when your spouse or kids leave the house. They may not make it back. 5. Take your children to Sunday School. 6. Teach a child how to make a pretty, and decorative mud pie. They will never forget it. 7. Kisses really do make it feel better. 8. Teach your children to always say "Thank You and You're Welcome." 9. Don't talk loudly to someone beside you in a crowded waiting room. 10. Tell your spouse often that you still love him/her just as much as you did on your wedding day.

Happy Birthday

Gabbin' with Glander

11 The Roane Reader

By: Jerry Lemons The Second Coming of Michael Jackson at Glander's All it took was a mere rumor. A chauffeur driving a gold limousine had appeared at Glander's. In the rear sat a frail-looking man dressed all in black with gold and red braid except for white gloves and white socks. He had shoulder-length black hair and wore big black sunglasses. He spoke with a soft feminine voice. From such facts, revolutions occur, kingdoms are overturned, and philosophies and religions are born. Within twenty-four hours of its occurrence, the rumor had spread throughout Roane County: Michael Jackson had appeared at Glander's. Within three days, the news had spread throughout east Tennessee; and within a week, the rumor had spread throughout the southeast. It was an elderly lady with blue hair who provided the reinforcement to the rumor of Michael Jackson appearing at Glander's. She was from Hope, Arkansas and she had driven all the way to Roane County because she had heard Michael Jackson had been spotted there. Who knows how she had heard it, or how she had discovered it was at Glander's Full Service Station and Market in downtown Emory Gap where the apparition had occurred? Such things are mysteries. The fact is, she went to Glander's and she saw Michael Jackson--in a gas puddle. She swore she saw the face of the King of Pop smiling at her from a gas sheen on the tarmac at Glander's. From such occurrences miracles are born... It was simply incredible. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. Highway 27 was blocked for a quarter-mile. Cars were lined up on the highway waiting to pull in to Glander's. I noticed from the license plates that the cars were from everywhere. There was even a car with Alaska plates on it. Glander had his signs out in force. They were a wonder to behold. One big sign with orange flashing lights proclaimed: "See Michael Jackson's face here--live!" Another sign stated: "Honk if you believe Michael is alive." One sign proclaimed "Forever in our hearts--the King of Pop Lives!" I noticed that a pavilion tent had been erected in front of Glander's between the service station and the market. A long line of people were in front of the tent waiting to go in. Merlin, Solomon and Glander stood at the tent-front taking up money. Signs with big arrows were all around the tent. The signs stated that inside the tent was undisputed and undeniable evidence and proof that Michael Jackson was alive. Of course, I couldn't resist. I got in line and waited... To be continued..... Next time: The face in the puddle

Let me introduce myself to those of you that don’t know me: I’m Debra, a 21 year old wife and mother. I’m pursuing a degree in Healthcare Administration at MTSU online, and I am a stay-at-home mom. I grew up in Lebanon, TN. Mother, Interrupted is my blog (http://www.interruptedmum.blogspot.com) and more importantly, my therapy. I write about what I find funny, and what I hope you’ll find funny. Most of the humorous inspiration comes from my own life. I should get a T-shirt that reads “You have the right to remain silent. Anything funny that happens while I’m with you can and will be used in my next blog post.” I have the decency to change the names, at least. Maybe you guys will appreciate this: my 2 year old daughter develops obsessions with random objects, and those obsessions change daily. Only a few have lasting power, and lately, one has proven itself a keeper: a heavy bookend with a deer head (complete with antlers) carved into it. Now, I like to think I’m a good mother, so the first time I saw her snuggling this weighty, inanimate object, I tried to take it away. That’s when she cried out “No! Don’t take Jesus away!” What? I looked around frantically. Was she seeing something I wasn’t? Was Jesus in that very room with us? It turns out that Jesus is the name she has lovingly bestowed on this bookend deer. It’s only slightly creepy when she wants to “Take Jesus to the sto (store) wif (with) us!” or orders me to “Get Jesus some more Goldfish.” At least when strangers hear her talking about it, they think I’m a wonderful mother with a sweet, blessed child who talks about Jesus like he’s her best friend. (Que “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” music) I have a younger brother who takes his “uncle responsibilities” very seriously. He loves to spend time with my daughter. When we were helping redecorate and paint my mom’s beauty salon (Utopian Salon in Lebanon) recently, he got a little exasperated by my daughter’s habit of destroying every.thing.she.sees, and sighed loudly. “It’s so hard, being an uncle,” he lamented to me. I laughed. “How do you think I feel sometimes? I’m her mom! I have to keep her out of stuff all the time!” He brushed that statement off, saying, “Yeah, but that’s different. You just live with her. I’m her uncle, and that’s a lot harder.” Oh, to be young. I can’t wait to remind him of this when he becomes a father, in the extremely distant future. Hear that, brother? EXTREMELY DISTANT. I love having the opportunity to share my stories with people. Thank you for reading, and don’t forget to check out my blog. If I made you laugh, let me know! You can email me at debra.carp@yahoo.com. Until next time, friends! Debra

15 Things It Took Me 50 Years to Learn 1. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight-savings time. 2. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggest you think she's pregnant unless you can see a baby emerging from her at that moment. 3. The most powerful force in the universe is gossip. 4. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above-average drivers. 5. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age 11. 6. There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness". 7. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them. 8. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be "meetings". 9. The main accomplishment of almost all organized protests is to annoy people who are not in them. 10. You should not confuse your career with your life. 11. A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person. 12. No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously. 13. When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy. 14. Your friends love you, anyway. 15. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

From the desk of Rebecca C. Fraker

It has been brought to my attention that there are several things that need to be addressed concerning funeral matters. I would like to try and address each one to the best of my ability and hopefully clarify any misconceptions concerning pre-arranged funerals, whether funded or non-funded.

1. What does it actually mean when a pre-arranged burial policy states that it is irrevocable? When I write a burial policy as a licensed insurance producer, one of the questions on the application is whether it being placed revocable or irrevocable. Most funeral homes place these as irrevocable. What this actually means is that the policy cannot be cashed in by any family member or funeral home prior to the insured’s death. That’s ALL it means. It does not mean it cannot be transferred to another funeral home of choice, nor will the insured lose any of the money they paid into the policy but actually should have accrued interest to cover the cost of inflation over the years. (Rule 0780-510,-13 states “The trust account established by this contract is irrevocable, and the funds paid hereunder are not refundable. Accumulated trust principal and interest are freely transferable to satisfy funeral expenses at any licensed funeral establishment as provided by law.” If it is written revocable, the money placed in the policy can be rolled to another insurance company or trust without the permission of the policy owner and all interest accrued can be kept by the funeral home. Rule 0780-5-10-,13 continuation… “If such trust account is revocable, a statement that the purchaser of the merchandise and/or services under the contract shall be entitled to receive any or all of the payments made and any earnings or interest thereon upon demand on the trustee prior to the death of the contract beneficiary.” The key thing to remember is if you paid for a pre-arranged funeral YOU ARE THE OWNER, and not the funeral home. 2. What happens if a funeral home closes and we have trusted our money into insurance or a trust account? Do we lose the monies paid? I have heard this question numerous times and I appreciate people being concerned. It pays to ask questions. I recommend that before you trust your personal information and hard earned money with any funeral home, be informed and know who the owners are. Know if your money is placed with a legitimate company and that your files are safe and secured with the funeral home you trust them to. You should be given paperwork that shows where your money in entrusted and contact information where you can check on the growth anytime you should so choose. I can only speak for Fraker Funeral Home and how we stand on these matters. I do know that if a funeral home closes you, the consumer and owner of the policy still own that pre-arrangement. It cannot be sold to another funeral home nor offered as a trade for services rendered. As for my funeral home, any pre-arrangement that has been trusted in our care will remain in our care unless the owner of the policy should choose to move it. We did not invest our lives savings here to leave a year or two down the road as some have been told. So for the record we are here to stay as long as the people of Roane County desire our services. We have made a lifetime commitment to Roane County and surrounding areas. Our family stands ready to meet your needs.

3. What if we choose to use a different funeral home than the one we originally made pre-arrangements with but haven’t moved it prior to a loved one’s death? At the time of your loved ones passing the only thing that has to be done is making the decision which funeral homes care you wish to release your loved one to. Remember YOU are the owner of that pre-arrangement. The funeral home is not the owner. So it’s as simple as a phone call. Once the call has been made to the funeral home you choose, that funeral home will then come and take care of your loved one from that point on. They will do an assignment for the amount of funeral expenses only and any remaining funds should be returned to the beneficiary or owners estate if no beneficiary was designated. The other funeral home has no hold on proceeds that have been paid by the insured if they do not render services at time of need. I hope this clarifies some of the questions we have been approached with. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to stop by our funeral home anytime. If you are not physically able to come to the funeral home just give me a call and I will be happy to visit you. That’s what families are supposed to do. Our family stands ready to serve your family. Remember your time of need is our time of commitment and when you come to Fraker Funeral Home the owners are right inside. Sincerely, Rebecca C. Fraker, LFD

The Banana Test

There is a very, very tall coconut tree and there are 4 animals, a Lion, Chimp, Giraffe, and a Squirrel. They decide to compete to see who is the fastest to get a banana off the tree. Who do you guess will win? Your answer will reflect your personality. So think carefully..... Try and answer within 30 seconds. Got your answer? If your answer is: Lion = you're dull. Chimpanzee = you're dense. Giraffe = you're a complete moron. Squirrel = you're hopeless.

A COCONUT TREE DOESN'T HAVE BANANAS.

GOT STRESS? I had a recent visit with a good doctor friend of mine. Somehow we got onto the subject of financial stress, or better known as Low investment income. Low interest rates and market ups and downs can be physically and emotionally draining. Check out the statistics concerning this cause of stress… We agreed that our clients his patients often have the very same causes of stress, who isn't worried about the value of his or her investments these days! So take a look and learn some facts from the good doctor: In a recent survey 7 out of 10 people claimed to be stressed concerning their money and their future. While loss of sleep and anxiety are some of the most common health challenges we might experience, study shows 27% will suffer from ulcers and digestive issues, 44% from migraines, 23% from severe depression and 6% will experience heart attacks. Chronic stress has caused a rise in healthcare costs only to create further expenses for the average person. Increase the incidence of low return on investment, leads to more stress thus creating a vicious cycle. So what can be done about it? On the practical side first be sure to get the proper financial advice from professionals like Robert James & Associates… www.robertjames.us For your personal stress management 1. Create a physical avenue to lower your stress levels and plan it out. Exercise is great for that, take a walk, hike, run, dance – especially for those of us who are higher energy and need to be active to release our tension. 2. Need a calming activity? Take a Yoga or Tai Chi class – relaxation thru movement, allowing you to center on your body and your breathing. 3. Create daily quiet time for breath work. Deep breathing delivers oxygen to the muscles allowing toxins to move out and reduce the tension. Breathe in thru your nose to a count of 4 hold for a count of 4 and breathe out thru your mouth to a count of 4. 4. Learn to meditate – you don’t need to chant “Om” and sit in silence for an hour “attempting to clear your mind.” I know that is a reason some people tend to shy away from meditation. If you choose follow a guide meditation/relaxation CD. You can listen to instrumental “New Age” music or just sit in the quiet for 10 minutes a day without distractions; focus on your breath, close your eyes if you choose and think of just being in peace. Meditation done before bedtime will help you get a better night’s sleep. 5. Eat healthy, balanced nutritional meals, avoid sweets, alcohol, and high Carbs – they will add to your stress and to your waist. 6. Drink plenty of pure water to clear out the toxins in your body. 7. Get help – stress affects your health and outlook on life. Look into stress free investments via guaranteed absolute total return type products.

How to Alleviate Stress

Remember, you did not get in this financial situation overnight, so you will not get out of this situation over night! The first thing that needs to be done is make a decision TO GET HELP! First, however, you need to do your homework and find out where you actually are financially! There are a few organizations that can help you with this, some specialize in guaranteed absolute total return type opportunities. They can make serious suggestions on how to increase you investment income and reduce your taxes without risk. Don’t be afraid to seek council from people who have the necessary knowledge and most important… are successful themselves! This process, as stated, will not be a quick fix and will take some time, but the result is well worth it! The first thing you can do to help yourself is to educate yourself on what you can do to make your situation better. August Fun Facts August is the third month of summer, and like July, it originally bore a different name before being renamed for one of the great Roman emperors, Augustus. Augustus had a number of military triumphs in the month of August. The birth flowers for August are the gladiolus and the poppy, and the birthstones for this month are the peridot and the onyx. Babies born in August are either Leos or Virgos. Leos are a fire sign and a natural leader who is generous to others and wants to provide and to lead. You have the capacity to help others, especially if they are willing to follow your lead. You may struggle with anger should others seem unappreciative of your efforts, and you will need to carefully check that trait if you are to lead others successfully. You probably will do best in relationships and workplaces where you are allowed to make most of the decisions. Famous Leos include Bill Clinton (August 19) and Jacqueline Kennedy (July 28). Virgo is a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury. Virgos tend to be reliable hard workers who are committed to their tasks. Virgos excel to meet the highest mark in work and in relationships, but can be overly critical of others. Virgos favor constancy and stability. Famous Virgos have included Mother Teresa (Aug. 27) and Michael Jackson (Aug. 29).

By: Irene Miles We, the people, as beauty did for the beast, Should love each other with love, The beast was no longer cursed, And he became a handsome, generous man. We, the people, should teach and educate our children so they will learn and do not fail life itself. We, the people, should share our wealth of knowledge so our children will stand for something instead of falling for nothing. We, the people, should search our hearts for compassion so our children will grow into real men and women of standards instead of just male and female beings depending on society. We, the people, should stand up for what we believe is righteous and beautiful for our souls. For our souls will live forever While our bodies rot in the Earth. We, the people, should hold each other in high honor and respect So our children will know the purpose of their lives, why they were born. We, the people, should strive for greatness to honor our Creator. Listen and hear. Listen and learn. Listen and teach.

Has the bottom seemingly fell out of your life? Do you know who to trust or where to go for help? Has life, with all it’s problems and pain, depression, and even failures caused you to believe there is no hope for you? Well. Will you try this? (I did) Just find you a quiet place, get down on your knees (being humble) and cry out to God, (He is always close to you) and ask Him to give you deliverance from all that the devil has bound you with! I know He will help you if you will let Him! He delivered me! He will take you out of the darkness and into His marvelous light! What have you got to lose? Try Him! He loves you!

Interesting and funny Olympic Trivia

Gold medals haven't been pure gold in years. The 1912 Olympics was the last time that gold medals were solid gold. Ever since, they've been silver with gold plating. The first Paralympic Games was held in 1948. The name "Paralympics" comes from the words "Parallel" and "Olympics". In 1900, in France, winners got paintings instead of gold medals. Gold, silver and bronze medals weren't given out until the third modern Olympics in 1904. The French gave the winners paintings because they believed they were more valuable. The Beijing Olympics, 2008, began at exactly 8:08:08 PM on 8/8/08 because the number 8 is considered lucky in China. In order for a sport to be considered for inclusion in the Olympics it must be 'widely practiced' by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents, and by women in at least 40 countries and on three continents. The reason the extra yards were added to the running distance of the marathon to make the total length a rather strange figure of 26 miles and 385 yards was because of the rather whimsical demand of Queen Alexandra of Great Britain, who demanded, in 1908, that the marathon should end below the royal box at London's White City Stadium, which added the extra 385 yards. The First Marathon: In 490 BCE, Pheidippides, a Greek soldier, ran from Marathon to Athens [about 25 miles] to inform the Athenians the outcome of the battle with invading Persians. The distance was filled with hills and other obstacles; thus Pheidippides arrived in Athens exhausted and with bleeding feet. After telling the townspeople of the Greeks' success in the battle, Pheidippides fell to the ground dead. In 1896, at the first modern Olympic Games, held a race of approximately the same length in commemoration of Pheidippides. The Berlin Games in 1936 were the first games to be televised. It wasn't until 1900 that women were allowed to participate in the Olympic Games. The very first recorded Ancient Olympic Games took place in 776 BC. The event

August 2012

was a 'stadion' race - a foot race equivalent to a 190m or 208yard dash. The winner was a humble baker from the Greek city state of Elis named Coroebus [ Koroibos]. For the first 13 games, the stadion race was the only competition. At the 14th Ancient Olympic Games, a double race was added. American swimmer Michael Phelps holds both the record for most gold medals won in a year, eight, and most career gold medals with 14. The early Olympic Games included competitions for trumpeters. Rope Climbing took place in the following years: 1908 1924, 1932. Rudimentary gym skills were all it took to win Olympic gold in the early 20th century it appears, as this event basically consisted of shimmying up a rope. Club Swinging occurred in 1904 and 1932. This consisted of swinging a club festooned with ribbons around your body and head. Strange but true. Tug-of-War between 1900 -1920. Indeed this trickiest of sports favored by rather overweight beer drinkers in pubs was actually considered an Olympic event. We hear competitive tug-of-war gave way to another short-lived event: the 40m three-legged race. Live Pigeon Shooting took place in the 1900 Paris Games. Over 300 pigeons were slaughtered in an orgy of blood and feathers. Though it's in dispute as to whether the event was sanctioned by the Olympic council, there's no disputing that Parisian sidewalks were cleaner for a brief period at the turn of the century. Running Deer Single Shot was practiced between the years 1906 and 1936. It was considered more humane than the pigeon shoot because contestants fired at moving paper targets only. In wrestling at the Stockholm Games in 1912, the light heavyweight final between a Swede, Anders Ahlgren, and a Finn, Ivar Bohling, lasted nine hours. Since neither had gained an advantage over the other, no gold medal was awarded. Each received a silver medal.

Kayla Christopher Aug. 16th Contrary to Popular Belief Mrs O'Leary's cow did not kick over a lantern and start the great Chicago fire of 1871. Years later, reporter Michael Ahern admitted that he made up this story to make his account of the story more interesting. The fire did, however, start in Mrs O'Leary's barn--but not by the cow. The fire, fanned by strong winds, spread north and east, raging for over 24 hours, killing more than 300 people, destroying downtown Chicago, and leaving some 90,000 people homeless.

My mom said she learned how to swim when someone took her out in the lake and threw her off the boat. I said, “Mom, they weren't trying to teach you how to swim. If God doesn't destroy Hollywood Boulevard, he owes Sodom and Gomorrah an apology. McDonalds announced it’s considering a more humane way of slaughtering its animals. You know they fatten them up and then kill them. You know the same thing they do to their customers, isn’t it? A rookie police officer was out for his first ride in a cruiser with an experienced partner. A call came in telling them to disperse some people who were loitering. The officers drove to the street and observed a small crowd standing on a corner. The rookie rolled down his window and said, "Let's get off the corner people." A few glances, but no one moved, so he barked again, "Let's get off that corner... NOW!" Intimidated, the group of people began to leave, casting puzzled stares in his direction. Proud of his first official act, the young policeman turned to his partner and asked, "Well, how did I do?" Pretty good," chuckled the vet, "you really know how to clear out a bus stop". A police station gets 2 new horses and 2 cops are assigned to be mounted policemen. They go on a ride and come back pleased. "This horse is great! From now on I'll always take this one" said the first cop. "My horse's great too. So I'll always take it" replied the second cop. "But how do we know which is which?" They though for a minute or two and one of them came up with an idea. "Lets cut off this ones tail" The other cop agreed and the horse lost it's tail. The next morning The police chief is standing in front of the horses and looks really mad. The two cops see this and ask what’s wrong. "You two morons cut off the horses’ tail that's what's wrong!" "But otherwise we couldn't tell them apart." "Can't you see the black one is a bit taller then the brown one.?!"

PETE SEMANICK

My transfer couldn’t have happened at a worse time as far as the weather was concerned. The day before our movers were to arrive we had one of the worst snowstorms of the century. Fortunately our apartment was on a large estate owned by Lord Heber Percy who had much influence in the village. He had a large Rolls Royce and informed the town council he wanted his lanes cleared as soon as possible. Needless to say he got his request very promptly. Roads in and around the estate were quickly cleared for our move and travel. By the time the movers rescheduled to pack and pickup our household goods the roads were clear. Once the goods were on the truck, we left for our new assignment at High Wycombe. I had already been assigned a house; in fact, I was given the same house assigned to the departed Fire Chief. High Wycombe was rather small compared to my other assignments. The main responsibility for High Wycombe was a highly classified worldwide communication operation. The site was below ground and well hidden from public view. The base was also 7th Air Division Headquarters (SAC) for bases such as Upper Heyford, Brize Norton, Fairford, Greenham Common and Upper Heyford. It was disclosed during my first meeting with the Base Commander, Colonel John Scanlan and the Base Civil Engineer, Major Roger Green, that I had inherited a minimal rated fire department due to the ineptness of the former Fire Chief, and my job was to raise this rating as soon as possible. I expressed my desire to accomplish the challenge and I began the task immediately. Personnel acted more like family members than any military installation I had been assigned to in the

past. Everyone greeted each other with a big smile and even with a handshake. Base buildings were within walking distance from housing and auto traffic was very light. This was going to be a great assignment. There was only one fire station, equipped with two pumpers and two pickup trucks, one for hauling around fire extinguishers and supplies; the second had a halon extinguishing agent tank used for runway standby for the U-3B “Blue Canoe”. The runway and aircraft were not on High Wycombe base proper but a few miles away at a British Air Base. The aircraft was used mainly for transporting our one star General to and from the bases mentioned above. Because the fire station was located in the center of the base and we had frequent visits by newly assigned base personnel asking for directions to different base buildings, my number one project was to make the interior more eye-catching and attractive. Soon the lobby of the main entrance was equipped with a large red carpet, a full size mirror on the far wall, ceiling fan, an open type eight slot coffee rack on each side wall, and a fancy coffee maker. The adjoining break room was furnished with comfortable, colorful recliners, coffee tables and TV. The ceiling was dropped using open slat type decor with fancy lighting above the slats. Walls were painted with contrasting colors rather than the standard off white. I soon learned that no other building on base was this attractive. The fire station became the talk of the base. Soon all my firemen were in excellent spirits and morale was at it’s highest.

I think this is a great way to get people to notice your business. Ok, so these are two great reasons to buy a spot on our coupons page but I have an even better reason to claim your space as well. Every dollar collected for your space on our coupons page will be donated to a local charity or cause. The Roane Reader will donate all the money to a different charity or cause each month. The coupons page will also be a great way to give back to the community as well. The Roane Reader feels very strongly about this great service and hope lots of businesses participate. Having your name on this page will show your support and if you don't have a special running that month you can simply sponsor a spot on the page to make a donation to the cause.

"Put your money where your faith is"

22 The Roane Reader

August 2012

by: Travis Harmon Welcome to the war. As you now know, Chick-Fil-A’s COO Dan Cathy was recently asked about his support of the traditional family. His reply “guilty as charged,” has become the proverbial “shot heard ‘round the world.” We now have a growing trend among celebrities, politicians, mayors and proclaiming-Christians who are boycotting the restaurant. The claim is that these people will not support the “hate group,” or support a company “of bigots.” How ironic! They feel as if everyone should have rights, and share them equally. Except for Christians. We’ve known it was coming for years. It’s here. John 16:33 warned us centuries ago that “In the world you shall have tribulation,” so it should come as no surprise. We’ve had valiant pastors and preachers prepare us for decades. Their prophetic words were given for such a time as this. Is this truly a war? Yes. Simply a war of words, possibly. However, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago’s mayors have all become publicly outspoken about their illegal refusal to allow Chick-Fil-A to branch into their cities. The always classless Roseanne Barr tweeted “anyone who eats **** Fil-A deserves to get the cancer that is sure to come from eating antibiotic filled tortured chickens 4Christ." But it’s quickly moving beyond words. Thousands have already joined the several Facebook groups entitled “Boycott ChickFil-A” pledging to refuse to support the company. Nothing anti-gay, hateful or bigoted had even occurred. No anti-gay advertisements have ever been used. Chick-Fil-A has never refused service to anyone based on their sexual orientation. Yet, by the secular media’s twisting of pro-traditional family values into being anti-anything, we clearly see what’s happening. Our faith is being attacked. Our God and His Word is being mocked. Thankfully we still have religious rights here in America. Will we always? I urge you to do a little research and check the trends. How should we react? Supposedly, 75% of Americans claim to hold to a Christian faith. Where are they? Why is this majority group of people silent in the most critical of times? Why is there only a few voices speaking up for the traditional Biblical family values? Blessings, and freedoms have only created a spoiled, silent, coward majority. I adamantly believe that American Christianity needs persecution to be awakened. It’s here. What more do we need? We now live in a country that will persecute a business owner for simply believing as a Christian. That, by definition, is the true bigotry. Do we respond by refusing to support the services of every company that supports and promotes anti-Christian values? I’d love to believe it was that simple. I’ve often wondered if anti-Christian musicians and entertainers would be rich and famous today without the support of those claiming to be Christ-like. I don’t think they would be. So do we boycott Sears, who have openly sold books that promote beastiality? Do we refuse to shop at Home Depot for being a “festival” vendor targeting children, at an event that promoted public nudity and lewd sexual acts? What if as Christians, we put our money where our mouth faith is? Could we make a difference? Does it even matter to you? I’d love to lead an army of Christians to stand against the attacks on our faith. I’d love to march an infantry up to the gates of Hell and show the world how seriously we take our faith. But I know how that would play out. We’d be ridiculed, and accused of more heinous acts than bigotry. I also know what happens if we don’t. Google “Sodom and Gomorrah.” I don’t claim to know exactly what your responsibility is in this situation. I do however know that our response should always be to lead with love. You should always “Be on your guard, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, and be strong.” (1 Corinthians 16:13) Standing up for what you believe in doesn’t ever give you the opportunity to be anything less than graceful. We’ve never been commanded to do any less than love our neighbor. However, there’s a big difference in gracefulness and approval. Walk carefully, but make sure your foundation is secure since it’s only going to get more difficult. Never forget the powerful hope we have at the end of John 16:33 where Jesus boldly reminds us to “be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” If that doesn’t encourage you then please read the book of Revelation and see how this war ends.
